  1. Good morning. Welcome to Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church. My name is Matthew Capone

  2. and I'm the pastor here and it's my joy to bring God's word to you today. If you are new or visiting

  3. with us, welcome. We are glad that you're here and we're glad that you're here not because we are

  4. trying to fill seats but because we are following after Jesus together as one community and as we

  5. follow after Jesus together we've become convinced that there's no one so good that they don't need

  6. God's grace and no one so bad that they can't have it which means that God has something to say to

  7. everyone in his word whether we've been Christians our entire lives, whether we maybe have been

  8. Christians for a few months, whether we would call ourselves not Christians, whether we have doubts or

  9. questions or objections to Christianity, God comes and speaks to all of us in his word and so that's

  10. why we come every week and take a look at what God has to say to us. We are finishing up a series in

  11. the book of Psalms and as I've been telling you the book of Psalms is the hymn book and the prayer book

  12. of God's people in the Old Testament, the Israelites, and continues to be used as all of the New Testament,

  13. all of the Old Testament by God's people in the New Testament, the church. It's a guide for us in how

  14. to worship God, how to talk to him, how to pray and like any song book it has all kinds of different

  15. angles on it, all different ways we could think about it or look at it. And one thing we talked

  16. about last week was the fact that the Bible, the Psalms, talk about our emotions. God uses them to

  17. shape our emotions, to help us understand what to do with them, how to have right emotions, how to stir up

  18. all kinds of emotions that we need to have, godly emotions, how to deal with emotions that

  19. come and surprise us. And as the Psalms do that, one of the things that's unique about the Psalms,

  20. maybe not unique but true, it's true of other parts of scripture, is that it's

  21. incredibly raw and brutal and honest. The psalmist doesn't pull punches about what it's like to live

  22. life in this world. In fact, I would suggest that the Psalms are more honest about the life of faith,

  23. about the Christian life than we are sometimes. The psalmist is more likely to call a spade a spade

  24. than we are. And we're going to come to a passage this morning, Psalm 73, which talks about one way in

  25. which the psalmist has doubt. The Psalms are a reminder to us that God knows that we struggle with

  26. doubts. He knows that sometimes we wonder if it's a good idea to continue following after him. Sometimes we

  27. wonder if it would be easier and better to just step away, to not be call ourselves a Christian

  28. anymore. And God also knows that when we look around at the world around us and we see people who

  29. aren't following God, and we see how well they're doing in their lives, we're tempted to wonder whether

  30. it's really worth it or not. And because the Psalms are so brutally honest and raw, the psalmist is going

  31. to bring that specific struggle before us this morning in Psalm 73. And when we see people who

  32. aren't following God and are doing well, we're tempted to give up on the Christian life and give

  33. in to sin. We're tempted to give up on the Christian life and give in to sin. And so it's with that that

  34. we come to Psalm 73. I'm going to read it now. You can follow along in your worship guide. It's printed

  35. near the back or in your Bible or on your phone. And as we come to God's Word, remember that He tells

  36. us that His Word is sweeter than honey, even honey that comes straight from the honeycomb, and it is

  37. more precious than gold, even the finest gold. And that's the reason that we come to God's Word reading

  38. now starting with verse 1. Truly God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart. But as for me,

  39. my feet had almost stumbled, my steps had nearly slipped. For I was envious of the arrogant when I saw

  40. the prosperity of the wicked. Verse 4. For they have no pangs until death. Their bodies are fat and sleek.

  41. They are not in trouble as others are. They are not stricken like the rest of mankind.

  42. Therefore, pride is their necklace. Violence covers them as a garment. Their eyes swell out through fatness.

  43. Their hearts overflow with follies. They scoff and speak with malice. Loftily they threaten oppression.

  44. They set their mouths against the heavens and their tongue struts through the earth. Verse 10.

  45. Therefore, His people turn back to them and find no fault in them. And they say, how can God know?

  46. Is there knowledge in the Most High? Behold, these are the wicked. Always at ease, they increase in riches.

  47. Verse 13. All in vain have I kept my heart clean and washed my hands in innocence.

  48. For all the day long I have been stricken and rebuked every morning.

  49. If I had said I will speak thus, I would have betrayed the generation of your children.

  50. But when I thought how to understand this, it seemed to me a wearisome task until I went into the sanctuary of God.

  51. Then I discerned their end.

  52. Verse 18.

  53. Truly, you set them in slippery places.

  54. You make them fall to ruin.

  55. How they are destroyed in a moment, swept away utterly by terrors.

  56. Like a dream when one awakes.

  57. Oh Lord, when you rouse yourself, you despise them as phantoms.

  58. When my soul was embittered, when I was pricked in heart, I was brutish and ignorant.

  59. I was like a beast toward you.

  60. Verse 23.

  61. Nevertheless, I am continually with you.

  62. You hold my right hand.

  63. You guide me with your counsel, and afterward you will receive me to glory.

  64. Whom have I in heaven but you?

  65. And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you.

  66. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.

  67. Verse 27.

  68. For behold, those who are far from you shall perish.

  69. You put an end to everyone who is unfaithful to you.

  70. But for me, it is good to be near God.

  71. I have made the Lord God my refuge, that I may tell of all your works.

  72. Please pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  73. Dear Father in heaven, we thank you again, as we do every week, for your word that you've given to us.

  74. That you haven't left us alone, but you've spoken to us.

  75. And we thank you even more that you don't ask us to plaster on happy faces.

  76. You don't ask us to pretend.

  77. You don't ask us to ignore our doubts.

  78. But instead, you name them for us.

  79. And you help us to see them and discuss them and address them.

  80. We ask that you would come this morning and that you would help us to do that very thing.

  81. That you would use your word to speak clearly to us.

  82. That we would leave understanding it more and knowing and loving and trusting you more as well.

  83. So, we ask these things not because we have earned them, but because Jesus has earned them for us.

  84. And so, we ask them in his name.

  85. Amen.

  86. If you are a sports fan at all, you know one of the great frustrations of sport fans.

  87. Especially, I would say, if you're maybe a football fan or a basketball fan.

  88. Not just one of the great frustrations, but one of the great excuses.

  89. If your team doesn't win, there's always an easy scapegoat, right?

  90. You can always blame the refs.

  91. In fact, this is something that people constantly discuss and get outraged about.

  92. There was a bad call in this game or that game.

  93. We experienced it recently last year with the Broncos.

  94. There was a big uproar about one of their games against the Kansas City Chiefs.

  95. And how if the ref had made a different call at a different time,

  96. they would have stopped the momentum from the Chiefs and the Broncos would have been able to win.

  97. I'm sure many of you are going to carry that bitterness with you for years to come.

  98. And one individual compares Psalm 73 to exactly that.

  99. This is the psalmist accusing God of being a terrible ref.

  100. When he looks at the world around him, he has his head knowledge.

  101. Verse 1,

  102. Truly God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart.

  103. But then when he looks around, what he knows in his head doesn't seem to be true of the world around him.

  104. That's what he thinks is true.

  105. He says theologically God's good to Israel, but it just doesn't seem to be true in his experience.

  106. In his experience, it seems like God actually is not good.

  107. He's making some terrible calls.

  108. And so that's why in verses 2 and 3 he tells us,

  109. His feet had almost stumbled.

  110. His steps had nearly slipped.

  111. Why?

  112. Because verse 3,

  113. I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

  114. God knows that there are many times when we're going to question his goodness.

  115. And God knows that there are times when we will look around and wonder if being a Christian is really worth it.

  116. And God knows what the psalmist sees in verse 73,

  117. that sometimes it seems like it's people who don't follow God who prosper and flourish the most.

  118. And so that's where we get what the psalmist heads into in these following verses.

  119. He sees all these terrible calls that God's making.

  120. There are these evil people, these wicked from verse 3, verse 4.

  121. They're incredibly healthy.

  122. They have no pains until death.

  123. They don't experience the problems that other people experience, verse 5.

  124. And they do this even though they are violent and proud, verse 6.

  125. Even though they're filled with foolishness, verse 7.

  126. They seem to have all they need to eat and more.

  127. Their words are terrible, verses 8 and 9.

  128. And yet it seems like God isn't doing anything about it.

  129. Instead, they're prospering.

  130. And so this leads the psalmist to have all kinds of doubts.

  131. We saw in verse 3, he's envious.

  132. He wonders why those people have these things and he doesn't.

  133. He's tempted again to wonder if God is really just.

  134. Verse 11, how can God actually know everything?

  135. If God was truly omniscient, if he was all-knowing,

  136. why would he allow these things to happen?

  137. And then he wonders, verses 13 and 14,

  138. if it's really worth living the righteous life.

  139. If it's really worth the sacrifice of following after God.

  140. If this is what he gets for it.

  141. Now, not all of us may face this kind of doubt,

  142. although I'm sure many of us do some of the time,

  143. and maybe all of us have at some time.

  144. But there's many kinds of situations and places where we look around

  145. and we see that those who don't know God,

  146. who don't follow God, who don't trust him,

  147. appear to be doing exceptionally well.

  148. Now, it might just be a place where it feels unfair.

  149. It may not have anything to do with sin.

  150. It may be you and your spouse have struggled to have children

  151. and you see people who are not Christians all around you

  152. who are having children all the time.

  153. And you wonder, how in the world could God be just?

  154. I've given my life to him.

  155. I'm following after him.

  156. And yet he's giving his blessings, not to me, but to other people.

  157. You may be facing all kinds of medical needs as you reach a certain age

  158. and you look around your friends who are the same age that you are,

  159. people who don't love God and follow God,

  160. and they seem to be having these carefree, active lives.

  161. And you wonder, God, why haven't you given that to me?

  162. I'm the one who's following after you.

  163. You might be struggling to pay and finance your life in retirement

  164. and you see people around you who have not a care in the world.

  165. And you wonder why God did not help you store up in the same way that they did.

  166. It might be that you're struggling to find a job that has purpose and power,

  167. work that's actually going to pay enough for you to support yourself and your family.

  168. And it seems that the doors are closing.

  169. And yet you see people who do violent things and deceitful things.

  170. And it seems to be not a problem at all for them to find a job that gives them enough.

  171. Maybe it's something that is the result of sin.

  172. You've committed, you've followed God to be ethical in your business.

  173. And it only seems to be harming you rather than helping you.

  174. All you're doing is falling behind.

  175. You've decided to honor God by remaining faithful in your marriage.

  176. And you look around and you see people who've chosen to not do that.

  177. And it seems like they are having an amazing life.

  178. You go and you watch videos about and movies about people whose lives become better

  179. when they forsake their marriages.

  180. And so you wonder,

  181. why is God asking me to do that?

  182. Maybe you have decided you are not going to commit your life to work.

  183. You're actually going to observe a Sabbath.

  184. There are going to be times when you rest.

  185. And all it does, it seems to be getting you behind as other people sprint ahead.

  186. Maybe you've embraced God's call to sexual integrity and faithfulness.

  187. And when you're at work,

  188. your coworkers are constantly discussing the sexual experiences that they're having.

  189. And it seems to be harming them in no way.

  190. And so you wonder why these are the blessings that other people are experiencing

  191. and you are not.

  192. The psalmist here in Psalm 73 sees that the righteous suffer and the wicked flourish

  193. and he is confused.

  194. He's confused and that's what leads him to this envy.

  195. Verse 3, this questioning of God and his goodness.

  196. And then his wondering whether it's really worth it.

  197. He says in verse 13,

  198. all in vain I have kept my heart clean and washed my hands in innocence.

  199. All this trouble that I've been taking to live a faithful life

  200. and do what God's asked me and commanded me to do

  201. has been for nothing.

  202. Because when I look at the world around me,

  203. it's clear that the calls that God's making,

  204. when God is a ref,

  205. he's actually giving the blessings to the wicked.

  206. And so that's why we're told in verses 2 and 3,

  207. his feet had almost stumbled,

  208. his steps had nearly slipped.

  209. Why is God allowing the world to work in this way?

  210. Why did he tell us in Psalm 1

  211. that if you're righteous,

  212. you're going to be like a tree planted by streams of water

  213. and everything you're going to do is going to prosper,

  214. but not so the wicked.

  215. If that's true,

  216. why does the world look as it does?

  217. And the psalmist is honest enough to say this and write it down,

  218. and God is good enough to us

  219. and knows enough that we're just dust

  220. to put it in the book of the psalms.

  221. And the psalmist comes with the entirety of his doubts

  222. and his fears,

  223. and he brings them to God.

  224. But then he has a turning point.

  225. He has a new perspective,

  226. and what is it that brings his new perspective?

  227. Well, verse 16,

  228. he tells us how difficult this is.

  229. I thought, how would I understand this?

  230. It seems to be a wearisome task.

  231. He's exhausted with thinking about this.

  232. Verse 17,

  233. until.

  234. Until what?

  235. What is it that gives the psalmist clarity?

  236. Until I went into the sanctuary of God.

  237. In other words,

  238. the psalmist was overwhelmed and confused,

  239. tempted to abandon God in his ways

  240. until he showed up to worship.

  241. And when he showed up to worship,

  242. he gained a new clarity and a new perspective.

  243. It's like someone who's not been able to see

  244. for a long time.

  245. Things have been getting blurrier and blurrier.

  246. And maybe you experienced this

  247. if you're someone who wears glasses like me.

  248. The first time you got them,

  249. you put them on,

  250. you thought, wow,

  251. everything is much more clear

  252. than it's ever been in the past.

  253. And I can see farther away

  254. than I've ever been able to see before.

  255. That's what happens to the psalmist here.

  256. When he shows up to worship,

  257. he's able to finally get a new perspective.

  258. He's able to see reality as it is.

  259. So I'll just pause here for a second

  260. and say part of the reason

  261. that we come to worship every Sunday

  262. is it helps us get back in touch with reality.

  263. That we live in a world

  264. where we have all sorts of messages

  265. being given to us all sorts of,

  266. all the time,

  267. some of which are true

  268. and some of which are not true.

  269. And we come to worship every Sunday

  270. because God has commanded us to,

  271. but also because he loves us.

  272. It's for his glory

  273. and it's also for our good.

  274. He uses worship to help us

  275. remember and understand

  276. what is most true in this world.

  277. He uses worship not necessarily

  278. to change our circumstances,

  279. but he uses it to change our perspective.

  280. And that's what happens here to the psalmist.

  281. He has all these questions about God.

  282. He sees the circumstances around him.

  283. He comes into the sanctuary.

  284. His circumstances don't change.

  285. He doesn't suddenly become someone

  286. who's fat and sleek, verse four.

  287. He doesn't necessarily become someone

  288. whose eyes swell out through fatness,

  289. but he does become someone who understands.

  290. Because, verse 17,

  291. what is it that he gives him new vision?

  292. He discerned their end.

  293. In other words,

  294. the psalmist begins to have

  295. an eternal perspective

  296. of everything that he's seeing around him.

  297. And that's what he tells us

  298. in verses 18 through 22.

  299. How is it that I can make sense

  300. of the fact that the people around me

  301. who don't follow God

  302. seem to be flourishing?

  303. What is it that worship helps me understand?

  304. Verse 18,

  305. Truly you set them in slippery places.

  306. You make them fall to ruin.

  307. Verse 19,

  308. How they are destroyed in a moment,

  309. swept away utterly by terrors.

  310. Like a dream when one awakes,

  311. O Lord, when you rouse yourself,

  312. you despise them as phantoms.

  313. Before, the psalmist was maybe

  314. only remembering part of Psalm 1.

  315. The part of Psalm 1 that says

  316. that the righteous are going to prosper.

  317. Everything that they're going to do

  318. is going to prosper.

  319. But he'd forgotten the other part of Psalm 1.

  320. That the wicked are like the chaff

  321. that the wind blows away.

  322. And so we see why Psalm 1

  323. is the introduction to the Psalter

  324. because it's the psalm

  325. that sets out at the beginning

  326. that there are only two ways to live.

  327. And that those who follow after God

  328. will live with God.

  329. But those who rebel against God

  330. will perish.

  331. And so the psalmist sees

  332. that all these things

  333. that are happening to the wicked,

  334. their wealth,

  335. their prosperity,

  336. their health,

  337. is temporary.

  338. And while they experience it now,

  339. God's judgment is coming.

  340. And so while he thinks

  341. he's tempted to believe

  342. that God is a poor ref

  343. making bad calls,

  344. he actually sees that God

  345. is the ultimate ref

  346. making good calls.

  347. Verses 18 and 19,

  348. these are people who are not going

  349. to get away with what they're doing forever.

  350. And so their prosperity

  351. is only for a moment.

  352. If someone is prospering,

  353. no matter how much

  354. they're prospering,

  355. if they don't know God,

  356. it will all disappear in a moment.

  357. It's of little value.

  358. On the other hand,

  359. the psalmist doesn't just understand

  360. the end of the wicked,

  361. he also understands

  362. that God is with the righteous.

  363. Verses 23 and 26,

  364. The psalmist realizes something

  365. that maybe some of you

  366. have experienced at times,

  367. especially if you're a parent.

  368. There are times

  369. when you have a child

  370. and the child wants

  371. maybe your things,

  372. your possessions,

  373. your support,

  374. your finances,

  375. but the child doesn't want you.

  376. A child is interested

  377. in the things

  378. rather than the relationship.

  379. When the psalmist comes

  380. into worship,

  381. he understands

  382. that he has been interested

  383. in the things

  384. that God can give him,

  385. but he's not been interested

  386. in God.

  387. He's been interested

  388. in the things

  389. that God can give him,

  390. but he's not been interested

  391. in God.

  392. Notice what he doesn't say

  393. in verses 23 through 26.

  394. Oh, I understood

  395. that God is actually

  396. going to give me a blessing

  397. on faith in a few years,

  398. and if I just wait

  399. for it patiently enough,

  400. I too will also prosper

  401. in my health

  402. and my finances.

  403. No, he doesn't see

  404. God's justice

  405. as giving him

  406. what he sees

  407. the wicked as having.

  408. Instead, he realizes

  409. that God's offer

  410. to him isn't stuff,

  411. but God offers him himself.

  412. As one person puts it,

  413. what the wicked get

  414. is this wealth

  415. and this health.

  416. What the psalmist gets

  417. is God.

  418. The wicked get health

  419. and wealth.

  420. What the psalmist gets

  421. is God.

  422. And so the wicked get health

  423. and riches temporarily.

  424. The psalmist gets God

  425. permanently.

  426. The wicked get riches

  427. and health temporarily.

  428. The psalmist gets God

  429. permanently.

  430. Verse 23,

  431. he has God's presence.

  432. He gets God.

  433. He's in the sanctuary.

  434. In the Old Testament,

  435. the sanctuary would have

  436. been the place

  437. that represented

  438. God's presence

  439. among his people.

  440. And that foreshadows

  441. when God would become

  442. even more present

  443. with his people.

  444. We don't have

  445. a sanctuary anymore.

  446. The curtain of the temple

  447. was torn in two

  448. when Jesus died

  449. because Jesus came

  450. to be God's presence

  451. with us.

  452. That if we have

  453. any doubt

  454. of God's presence

  455. in his relationship

  456. and his love

  457. for us and with us,

  458. we only need to remember

  459. that his presence,

  460. as the psalmist

  461. experiences it

  462. in part in the sanctuary,

  463. we see it

  464. and know it

  465. in full

  466. because Jesus came

  467. and actually lived

  468. as a man

  469. on this earth

  470. in a human body

  471. with us

  472. to show us

  473. God's presence.

  474. Now you might be thinking,

  475. well that doesn't do me

  476. a whole lot of good,

  477. right?

  478. Jesus isn't here

  479. right now.

  480. But Jesus tells us

  481. in John 16

  482. it's actually better

  483. that he would leave

  484. because he's given us

  485. the Holy Spirit

  486. to guide us

  487. in all truth

  488. is what he says

  489. in John.

  490. And so the psalmist

  491. has God's presence here.

  492. We, people in the New Testament,

  493. have God's Holy Spirit

  494. that he gives us

  495. to guide us

  496. and be with us

  497. and comfort us.

  498. The Holy Spirit

  499. empowers us

  500. to obey God.

  501. It enables us

  502. to do what God's

  503. commanded us to do.

  504. If we're in difficult

  505. circumstances

  506. like the psalmist

  507. and discouraged

  508. and afraid

  509. we can pray to God

  510. to send his spirit

  511. to help us.

  512. If we don't know

  513. what to do

  514. God tells us

  515. in James chapter 1

    James 1 chapter mention

  516. that we can pray to God

  517. and he will give us wisdom.

  518. Notice the psalmist

  519. doesn't say

  520. that he looks at the wicked

  521. and he sees all the wisdom

  522. that they have.

  523. He doesn't even say

  524. that he sees the peace

  525. and joy

  526. and contentment

  527. that they have.

  528. All he can see

  529. is their health

  530. and their wealth.

  531. 24,

  532. you guide me

  533. with your counsel.

  534. God gives us

  535. his word

  536. to show us

  537. how to walk

  538. in this world.

  539. And that's not

  540. what the wicked have

  541. in Psalm 73.

  542. Instead,

  543. they have a very bad

  544. surprise waiting

  545. for them

  546. because verse 19

  547. they're destroyed

  548. in a moment.

  549. And then finally,

  550. verse 24,

  551. afterwards you will

  552. receive me to glory.

  553. The psalmist realizes

  554. that while the wicked

  555. will perish,

  556. while they've set

  557. in slippery places,

  558. he is in a solid place.

  559. Because he's taken

  560. refuge in God

  561. even though he doesn't

  562. experience all the benefits

  563. and prosperity

  564. that he wants to experience

  565. now,

  566. he has the hope

  567. that he is going

  568. to be with God

  569. forever.

  570. that when he dies,

  571. God's going to receive

  572. him to glory.

  573. He's going to take part

  574. in the new creation.

  575. When God comes

  576. and makes everything

  577. right in this world,

  578. the psalmist

  579. is going to be

  580. a part of that.

  581. And so he has

  582. something greater,

  583. far greater,

  584. and far more glorious

  585. than those in the world

  586. around him

  587. that he looks at.

  588. That's the realization

  589. he has

  590. as he comes

  591. and he comes

  592. into the sanctuary

  593. and discerns,

  594. verse 17,

  595. therein.

  596. He understands

  597. that God

  598. is bringing judgment

  599. and destruction

  600. on the wicked,

  601. but bringing salvation

  602. to the righteous.

  603. And so that's how

  604. he comes to understand,

  605. to give this new perspective.

  606. He has an eternal perspective

  607. now on the circumstances

  608. around him.

  609. Again,

  610. his circumstances

  611. haven't changed,

  612. but his perspective has.

  613. Coming and worshiping God

  614. helps him to understand

  615. what is most real

  616. and most true

  617. in this world.

  618. I said earlier,

  619. if some of you

  620. are parents,

  621. you've had this experience

  622. potentially of a child

  623. being interested

  624. in your stuff,

  625. but not in you.

  626. But you also know

  627. if you've interacted

  628. with young children

  629. that often

  630. the opposite is also true,

  631. especially when they're

  632. small and little,

  633. that they will choose

  634. their parent

  635. over anything.

  636. that a young child,

  637. the weaned child

  638. that we talked about

  639. last week

  640. in Psalm 131

  641. would rather be

  642. with its mother

  643. than with anyone else,

  644. no matter how much wealth

  645. and health

  646. and prosperity

  647. that they have.

  648. And that's what happens

  649. to the psalmist here.

  650. I am continually with you,

  651. verse 23.

  652. He would rather be with God

  653. than have all the prosperity

  654. with someone else.

  655. He'd rather be with his parent

  656. than anywhere else.

  657. He understands

  658. that there's something

  659. more important

  660. and valuable

  661. than wealth

  662. and status.

  663. If you're not a Christian,

  664. this psalm is telling us

  665. no matter how much money

  666. and health you have,

  667. you lack God now

  668. and you will one day

  669. have ultimate poverty.

  670. No matter how much health

  671. and wealth you have,

  672. you lack God now

  673. and you will one day

  674. have ultimate poverty.

  675. If you are a Christian,

  676. it doesn't matter

  677. how much you lack.

  678. You have God now

  679. and you will have him forever.

  680. It doesn't matter

  681. how much you lack,

  682. you have God now

  683. and that is ultimate wealth.

  684. Notice that the psalmist's solution

  685. is not for God

  686. to give him things

  687. he doesn't have now,

  688. but for God

  689. to be with him

  690. and for him.

  691. And so if you're struggling

  692. as the psalmist is,

  693. if you're struggling

  694. in verse 3

  695. being envious

  696. of the arrogant

  697. and the prosperity

  698. of the wicked,

  699. if you're struggling

  700. with verse 11

  701. wondering if God

  702. is truly just,

  703. if he truly knows

  704. what's going on

  705. in this world,

  706. and if you're struggling

  707. with verse 13

  708. wondering if it's actually

  709. worth it to live

  710. a holy life,

  711. then on the one hand

  712. you're in good company

  713. here with the psalmist.

  714. But God never

  715. leaves us where we are.

  716. He always takes us

  717. somewhere

  718. and he does that

  719. in this psalm.

  720. And he shows us

  721. that our hope

  722. and our trust

  723. is not in a change

  724. in circumstances,

  725. but a change

  726. in perspective.

  727. The psalmist here

  728. reassesses

  729. what is valuable

  730. and worthwhile.

  731. Verse 1,

  732. he says,

  733. truly God is good

  734. to Israel,

  735. to those who are

  736. pure in heart.

  737. So theologically

  738. he believes

  739. in God's goodness,

  740. but experientially

  741. in his heart

  742. he does not see it

  743. or know it

  744. until he comes

  745. to the very last verse.

  746. If you've heard me

  747. teach and preach

  748. for a while,

  749. you know I'm a big fan

  750. of bookends.

  751. And the word good

  752. shows up in the first verse

  753. and the last verse.

  754. verse 1,

  755. this good

  756. is just a theological

  757. statement

  758. that's completely

  759. divorced from

  760. the psalmist experience.

  761. I know God's good.

  762. I don't see it

  763. because he seems

  764. to be giving his goodness

  765. to everyone else.

  766. In 28,

  767. the very last verse,

  768. he now knows,

  769. but for me

  770. it is what?

  771. Good

  772. to be near God.

  773. I have made

  774. the Lord God

  775. my refuge

  776. that I may tell

  777. of all your works.

  778. As he goes

  779. through this psalm,

  780. as he pours out

  781. his lament,

  782. as he reassesses

  783. everything in the

  784. perspective of eternity,

  785. the psalmist gets

  786. a new definition

  787. of what good

  788. is.

  789. And so he can say,

  790. not just with his head,

  791. but with his heart,

  792. verse 1,

  793. truly God is good

  794. to Israel.

  795. Why?

  796. Verse 28,

  797. because it is good

  798. to be near God.

  799. I have made

  800. the Lord God

  801. my refuge

  802. that I may tell

  803. of all your works.

  804. His refuge

  805. is the one

  806. who protects him.

  807. And he's telling

  808. of all of God's works.

  809. That's part of what

  810. he's doing

  811. in the sanctuary.

  812. And so as he understands

  813. that God

  814. is his safety

  815. and his hope

  816. and his treasure,

  817. that the things

  818. that the people

  819. around him have

  820. that he doesn't have

  821. are temporary

  822. and the things

  823. that he has

  824. that they don't have

  825. are permanent.

  826. He's able to take

  827. refuge in God

  828. and sing of God's works.

  829. Now for those of us

  830. who are in the New Testament,

  831. the people of the church,

  832. taking refuge in God,

  833. we would talk about this

  834. as having faith in Christ.

  835. In the Old Testament,

  836. he knew that God

  837. was the one

  838. who was going to save him,

  839. that would receive him

  840. into glory,

  841. verse 27.

  842. But he did not know

  843. exactly how that

  844. was going to happen.

  845. We now know

  846. that God's refuge

  847. to us

  848. is a refuge

  849. that he gives us

  850. through Jesus.

  851. That because Jesus

  852. had no refuge

  853. when he died on the cross,

  854. because God

  855. poured out his wrath

  856. and his punishment,

  857. the destruction

  858. in verse 19

  859. that the wicked received,

  860. Jesus received

  861. on our behalf,

  862. we can look to Jesus

  863. as our refuge.

  864. And no matter

  865. what happens,

  866. no matter what other people

  867. have that we don't,

  868. we know that that's something

  869. that we cannot lose.

  870. While wealth and health

  871. are things that we can.

  872. And the work,

  873. verse 28,

  874. that we tell of,

  875. the work that we praise God

  876. for more than anything else

  877. is his work

  878. of sending his son,

  879. of sending Jesus

  880. to live as a man

  881. in this world,

  882. to live a perfect life

  883. that we didn't live.

  884. to die the death

  885. that we deserved

  886. so that everyone

  887. who has faith and hope

  888. and trust in him

  889. would be able

  890. to be near God,

  891. to make the Lord God

  892. our refuge

  893. and tell

  894. of all his works.

  895. If you were

  896. following the news

  897. last fall,

  898. you may have

  899. not just heard

  900. about the Broncos,

  901. but you may have

  902. also heard

  903. a strange

  904. story in the world

  905. of art history.

  906. There's an artist

  907. named Banksy,

  908. it's his nickname,

  909. and he painted

  910. a painting called

  911. Girl with a Balloon,

  912. and it was sold

  913. at auction

  914. for 1.4 million.

  915. And there's many

  916. auctions that happen.

  917. This was at an auction

  918. house, I think,

  919. somewhere on the east coast,

  920. probably New York City,

  921. and usually these auctions

  922. end without event.

  923. The person who wins

  924. the auction

  925. takes their prize.

  926. They take what they've

  927. earned and paid for

  928. and bought,

  929. and they keep it.

  930. They have it.

  931. But something very

  932. different happened

  933. at this auction.

  934. As soon as it was over,

  935. and this 1.4 million

  936. dollar purchase

  937. was completed,

  938. an alarm started going off

  939. in the auction house.

  940. And immediately

  941. after the alarm

  942. went off,

  943. the painting started

  944. dropping out of the

  945. bottom of the frame.

  946. And as it came out

  947. of the bottom of the frame,

  948. it came out in pieces.

  949. In other words,

  950. as soon as this buyer

  951. purchased the painting,

  952. it was destroyed.

  953. Come to find out,

  954. the artist had planted

  955. a shredder in the frame,

  956. and he had decided

  957. that if his painting

  958. was ever set up

  959. for auction,

  960. he would destroy it.

  961. And so he waited

  962. until the moment

  963. when it was done,

  964. he planted someone

  965. in the audience,

  966. and they had a remote

  967. control that they could

  968. press it.

  969. So as soon as the purchase

  970. was complete,

  971. the artwork would be destroyed.

  972. This great investment,

  973. this 1.4 million dollar purchase,

  974. was gone in an instant.

  975. The psalmist is telling us

  976. in Psalm 23

  977. that if we put our hope

  978. in health and wealth

  979. and prosperity,

  980. it may work for a time,

  981. but it will be gone

  982. in an instant.

  983. that what seems precious

  984. to us will be destroyed.

  985. Those who put their hope

  986. and their investment

  987. and their trust in God

  988. will have something

  989. that cannot be destroyed

  990. and that will last forever.

  991. And so Jesus tells us

  992. in Mark chapter 8,

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  993. in calling the crowd

  994. to him with his disciples,

  995. he, that is Jesus,

  996. said to them,

  997. if anyone would come to me.

  998. If anyone would come after me,

  999. let him deny himself

1000. and take up his cross

  1001. and follow me.

1002. For whoever would save his life

  1003. will lose it,

1004. but whoever loses his life

  1005. for my sake

  1006. and the gospels

  1007. will save it.

1008. For what does it profit a man

1009. to gain the whole world

  1010. and forfeit his soul?

1011. For what can a man give

1012. in return for his soul?

  1013. For behold,

1014. those who are far from you

  1015. shall perish.

1016. You put an end to everyone

1017. who is unfaithful to you.

  1018. But for me,

1019. it is good to be near God.

1020. I have made the Lord God

  1021. my refuge

  1022. that I may tell

  1023. of all your works.

  1024. Please pray with me.

  1025. Dear Father in heaven,

  1026. we thank you

  1027. that you're a good Father.

1028. You don't give up on us

  1029. when we doubt you

  1030. and we question you.

  1031. But instead,

  1032. you've given us

  1033. the words

1034. to do that very thing.

1035. But you also don't leave us

  1036. in our doubts

  1037. and our questions,

  1038. but you call us

  1039. to hope and faith

  1040. to follow after you

  1041. and walk

  1042. in the way

  1043. that Jesus has set

  1044. for us to walk.

  1045. And so we ask

  1046. as we struggle

  1047. with doubts and fears,

  1048. as we wonder

  1049. whether you're good

  1050. and just,

  1051. that you would use

  1052. your word

  1053. and your spirit

  1054. to build us up

  1055. and give us faith

  1056. and trust in you

  1057. as we understand

1058. that what you've given us

  1059. is more valuable

  1060. than anything else

1061. and that what we envy

  1062. from others

  1063. are things

  1064. that will not last

  1065. and cannot satisfy.

  1066. We ask these things

  1067. not because we have

  1068. earned them,

  1069. but because Jesus

1070. has earned them for us

1071. and so we ask them

  1072. in his name.

  1073. Amen.

  1074. Amen.

  1075. Amen.

  1076. Amen.
