  1. Sorry, I forgot my Bible at home, of all things.

  2. As a pastor, you're not supposed to forget your Bible,

  3. so I'm going to be reading out of the bulletin

  4. our scripture today.

  5. But I do want to extend a thank you to Matthew

  6. and the elders of this church for having me.

  7. It is an honor to be here this morning and to be with you.

  8. And as Matthew said, you know, I grew up, in a sense,

  9. in this church for several years during junior high.

  10. And it was in this church that I attended

  11. my first communicants class, that I became a church member,

  12. that I took my first communion.

  13. And so it's great to be back with you guys this morning,

  14. worshiping 20-plus years later.

  15. It is a wonderful thing.

  16. Before we dig into this psalm, let me pray for our time.

  17. Heavenly Father, we do thank you and praise you

  18. that you are the King of kings and the Lord of lords.

  19. Father, we thank you that your word stands.

  20. Even as we fail and fade away, your word stands forever.

  21. And in it we find hope, that we have life in you,

  22. that we have resurrection in your Son,

  23. and we have hope eternally.

  24. Lord, I pray that you would open our hearts and minds

  25. this morning to be able to see you clearly again,

  26. to be able to worship you in the splendor of your truth.

  27. In your name we pray.

  28. Amen.

  29. Our psalm this morning is Psalm 87,

  30. and I will be reading it to us from the ESV.

  31. This one was born there, they say.

  32. And of Zion it shall be said,

  33. This one and that one were born in her,

  34. for the Most High himself will establish her.

  35. The Lord records as he registers the peoples.

  36. This one is born there.

  37. Singers and dancers alike say,

  38. All my springs are in you.

  39. Well, I love the fact that you are spending your summer in the psalms.

  40. The psalms have always been, to me, so rich and so deep.

  41. They meet our souls in the joys and the turmoils of life.

  42. They feed us.

  43. They teach us how to praise,

  44. how to voice protest and complaint,

  45. how to plead and yearn,

  46. how to trust, give thanks,

  47. have hope, weep, and mourn.

  48. And the list goes on.

  49. The psalms wrestle through the spectrum of the human experience,

  50. focusing our hearts upon the God who upholds and governs all things

  51. and who loves his people.

  52. Our psalm this morning is a beautiful psalm about the church.

  53. Psalm 87 reminds us of the reality of the kingdom of God.

  54. Too often, we forget who we are.

  55. We forget that we are citizens of the kingdom of heaven.

  56. We are a forgetful people.

  57. I am a forgetful person.

  58. I constantly fail to recall the truth that I am a child of God,

  59. freed from condemnation, declared righteous.

  60. I am being made holy.

  61. I own an inheritance greater than anything I can dream or imagine.

  62. Too often, we all forget that we are the sons and daughters of the king.

  63. And we need to hear this message over and over again.

  64. We do not have to fear in this life or in the life to come.

  65. We are a people loved by God.

  66. Our identity is rooted in his grace.

  67. And when I was thinking about this psalm in the context of the kingdom,

  68. I thought of Handel's Messiah and my dad.

  69. You see, after our time here while I was in junior high,

  70. my family moved to Village 7.

  71. And I soon found out that every Easter Sunday morning,

  72. at the end of the service,

  73. they would invite the congregation up, whoever wanted to sing,

  74. to join the choir and Handel's Hallelujah Chorus from the Messiah.

  75. And every Easter Sunday, without fail,

  76. my dad would enthusiastically jump to his feet

  77. and run to the front to be a part of that great chorus.

  78. And as a teenager growing up,

  79. you know, I think every teenager has the same experience with their parents

  80. of just being embarrassed that they belong to their parents.

  81. So every year, I put my hand on my face and said,

  82. oh no, there goes dad again.

  83. Singing off key to Hallelujah Chorus in front of everybody.

  84. But the reason I thought of my dad in the context of this chorus,

  85. or in this psalm,

  86. is that as he was singing the chorus and belting it out,

  87. often with the wrong words or in the wrong tune,

  88. he would sing out,

  89. the kingdom of this world is become the kingdom of our Lord

  90. and of his Christ and he shall reign forever and ever.

  91. And that line has always stood out to me.

  92. The kingdom of this world is become the kingdom of our Lord.

  93. You see, at the heart of the gospel message,

  94. there is a kingdom.

  95. A king and his people united in joy, purpose, life, and love.

  96. The Bible opens with God creating everything,

  97. calling into existence all things,

  98. ordering, separating, bringing purpose and life.

  99. And on the sixth day,

  100. he created humanity as the crowning jewel of his creation.

  101. He created human beings,

  102. you and me,

  103. made in his image,

  104. who were to have deep relationship with himself,

  105. who were to rule his created order.

  106. Adam and Eve were created as king and queen,

  107. created to rule as vice regents of the universe,

  108. image bearers of the eternal God,

  109. who were to expand the order and purpose of his kingdom

  110. into all the earth and beyond.

  111. As we know,

  112. tragically,

  113. Adam and Eve ushered a fallen kingdom of this world

  114. when they entered into sin.

  115. And before they ate of the forbidden tree,

  116. the kingdom of God was united to this world perfectly.

  117. There was communion and fellowship,

  118. beautiful relationship between God and man,

  119. between man and the created order.

  120. Humanity walked with their Lord,

  121. unashamed with all dignity,

  122. wisdom,

  123. happiness,

  124. and peace.

  125. When Adam and Eve sinned,

  126. they tore apart that relationship.

  127. Evil, disease, and death

  128. spread to everything we see around us

  129. and everyone we know.

  130. The world was plunged into the kingdom of brokenness,

  131. futility,

  132. and death.

  133. But yet,

  134. even at that moment of our parents' first sin,

  135. we see the grace

  136. and the plan of God.

  137. In Genesis 3,

  138. Adam and Eve were given a covering for their guilt

  139. and their shame.

  140. They were also given a promise.

  141. It is a promise in seed form

  142. that one day God would provide

  143. from the seed of the woman

  144. a Messiah to crush

  145. and destroy the works of sin and Satan.

  146. That one day there would be once again

  147. perfect communion,

  148. fellowship,

  149. and relationship between God and man.

  150. What man had broken,

  151. God would remake

  152. a restoration

  153. of the kingdom.

  154. And we see throughout the Old Testament

  155. the seed

  156. takes root.

  157. We see the family of Israel

  158. chosen to proclaim

  159. the promises of God.

  160. We see King David

  161. given the promise

  162. that one day

  163. one of his sons

  164. would reign,

  165. and not for a lifetime,

  166. but for an eternity.

  167. We see,

  168. even in the exile,

  169. a remnant

  170. that remembers

  171. and hopes

  172. in the king to come.

  173. The gospel

  174. is the good news

  175. because it's the message

  176. that the world

  177. has been groaning

  178. and longing to hear

  179. all of its life.

  180. And in Matthew 4,

  181. Jesus begins his public ministry

  182. with these words,

  183. Repent,

  184. for the kingdom of heaven

  185. is at hand.

  186. All the promises,

  187. all the longings,

  188. all the anticipations

  189. found their culmination

  190. in the person

  191. and work

  192. of Christ.

  193. What was seed

  194. in Genesis,

  195. a sapling

  196. in the people of Israel,

  197. a young tree

  198. in the kingdom of David,

  199. a stump cut off

  200. in the exile,

  201. in Christ

  202. is the promised shoot

  203. that flourishes

  204. into the tree

  205. of everlasting life.

  206. The message of the gospel

  207. is one of kingdom.

  208. The kingdom of this world

  209. has become

  210. the kingdom of our God.

  211. Christ has joined

  212. what was previously separated.

  213. He left the glories

  214. of his heavenly throne

  215. to restore,

  216. renew,

  217. and bind up

  218. the brokenness

  219. of this world.

  220. This is the good news

  221. that we celebrate

  222. this morning

  223. and every morning

  224. that Christ has purchased us

  225. by his blood

  226. and given us a place

  227. and a purpose

  228. in that kingdom.

  229. Psalm 87

  230. is a kingdom psalm.

  231. The psalmist here

  232. foresees a day

  233. when not only Israel

  234. but all of the nations

  235. of the world

  236. will find a home

  237. in Zion.

  238. A day when the shalom

  239. of God,

  240. the universal flourishing

  241. of all things

  242. is realized

  243. in time

  244. and space

  245. history.

  246. Through this psalm

  247. we see first of all

  248. that the kingdom

  249. focused church

  250. is a people

  251. loved by God.

  252. Look at verse 1.

  253. On the holy mountain

  254. stands the city

  255. he founded.

  256. The Lord loves

  257. the gates of Zion

  258. more than all

  259. the dwelling places

  260. of Jacob.

  261. Glorious things

  262. of you are spoken,

  263. O city of God.

  264. God has chosen

  265. and established Zion.

  266. He has chosen

  267. and established

  268. his church

  269. for himself.

  270. He has built

  271. this city

  272. on an unshakable foundation.

  273. He is the author

  274. who loves his work.

  275. This is an interesting

  276. statement.

  277. It's a strange

  278. statement.

  279. The Lord loves

  280. the gates of Zion

  281. more than all

  282. the dwelling places

  283. of Jacob.

  284. Why would God

  285. love this place,

  286. this physical place

  287. more than all

  288. the other places

  289. where his people dwell?

  290. What is so special

  291. and unique

  292. about the gates

  293. of Zion?

  294. Yes,

  295. Zion was a beautiful city

  296. and its gates

  297. and architecture

  298. were magnificent.

  299. But there's something

  300. deeper going on here

  301. that caused

  302. the Lord of glory

  303. to love this

  304. particular place.

  305. In the context

  306. of the Old Testament,

  307. Zion was the city

  308. of David.

  309. Jerusalem,

  310. where God's presence

  311. dwelt in the tabernacle

  312. and later the temple.

  313. It was the place

  314. where his people

  315. could know

  316. and experience

  317. communion

  318. and relationship

  319. with him.

  320. The worship

  321. and reconciliation

  322. of Israel

  323. took place here.

  324. It was the touch point

  325. between God

  326. and man.

  327. So you see,

  328. God loves this city

  329. because it is where

  330. he meets

  331. with his people.

  332. For the entire time

  333. that my wife,

  334. Callie,

  335. and I were dating

  336. and engaged,

  337. we lived long distance,

  338. 1,000 miles apart

  339. from each other.

  340. And during that time,

  341. I loved the gates

  342. of the airport.

  343. I was always excited

  344. to go to the airport.

  345. And it wasn't that

  346. the airport was amazing.

  347. I don't know any of you

  348. who actually go to the airport

  349. just to hang out

  350. or have a good time.

  351. But I loved that place

  352. because that's where

  353. I got to meet her again.

  354. We would have

  355. face-to-face relationship

  356. again.

  357. I loved that place

  358. because it brought us near.

  359. And God loves Zion

  360. in much the same way

  361. because it is a place

  362. he built

  363. to be with his people.

  364. His bride

  365. that he has chosen

  366. and purified

  367. for himself.

  368. We see in the book

  369. of Hebrews

  370. that the old

  371. sacrificial system

  372. and the physical temple

  373. itself pointed to

  374. and had their fulfillment

  375. in the person of Christ.

  376. God loved us

  377. so much

  378. that he offered up

  379. Christ,

  380. his own perfect son,

  381. his temple

  382. as our perfect sacrifice.

  383. Through the mediation

  384. of his blood,

  385. we are set free

  386. from slavery

  387. to sin and death

  388. and are made righteous

  389. before the king.

  390. As Christians,

  391. we now have access

  392. to the throne room

  393. of grace.

  394. And it's not through

  395. the blood of lambs

  396. or bulls

  397. or our curtains

  398. that separate us.

  399. We have direct

  400. communion with God

  401. through Christ.

  402. We ourselves

  403. are the temple

  404. of God.

  405. In 1 Corinthians 3.16,

  406. Paul writes,

  407. Do you not know

  408. that you are God's temple

  409. and that God's spirit

  410. dwells in you?

  411. God has established

  412. himself in our hearts

  413. and brought us

  414. out of the darkness

  415. into the light

  416. of his true community.

  417. God has chosen

  418. to give power

  419. to his children

  420. in the church.

  421. It is his institution

  422. and as backward

  423. and broken

  424. as we often are

  425. in the church,

  426. he has promised

  427. to prepare his bride

  428. and purify her

  429. to present her

  430. to himself

  431. as faithful

  432. and faultless.

  433. The church

  434. is the betrothed

  435. of God.

  436. He has chosen

  437. to spend eternity

  438. with you and me.

  439. I was in college

  440. when the reality

  441. finally struck me

  442. that God didn't

  443. just love me

  444. in this theoretical

  445. out there type of way,

  446. but he actually

  447. liked me.

  448. I had this view

  449. in my mind

  450. that God was somehow

  451. a grandfather

  452. who kind of

  453. had to love you.

  454. You know,

  455. your grandkid,

  456. you have to be loved

  457. by your grandpa.

  458. It's his job

  459. to do that.

  460. He sends you presents

  461. but really

  462. there's no liking

  463. in the relationship

  464. that we would long for.

  465. But one of my

  466. campus ministers

  467. in college

  468. at Colorado State

  469. told me one time,

  470. he said,

  471. Matt,

  472. you know,

  473. God chose you

  474. for himself

  475. from the foundation

  476. of the world

  477. not because

  478. he had to

  479. but because he wanted

  480. to spend eternity

  481. with you.

  482. He chose

  483. to sacrifice himself

  484. for you

  485. because he likes you.

  486. God delights

  487. in you.

  488. That struck me

  489. and has never

  490. left me since.

  491. God loves his church.

  492. He delights

  493. in you,

  494. his people,

  495. and his kingdom

  496. purposes will never

  497. fail because

  498. he is faithful

  499. to his promise

  500. of love

  501. to his people.

  502. And there is an

  503. already not yet

  504. aspect of this kingdom.

  505. Jesus has ushered

  506. in his kingdom

  507. but right now

  508. it is mostly hidden,

  509. small,

  510. like a mustard seed

  511. and can only be seen

  512. in and through

  513. his people.

  514. We catch glimpses

  515. of the kingdom

  516. when we love each other,

  517. when we worship God

  518. and find joy

  519. and peace in him,

  520. when we serve

  521. one another.

  522. The kingdom

  523. is already,

  524. we taste of its goodness

  525. but one day

  526. Christ will return

  527. and his kingdom

  528. will arrive in full.

  529. We can take comfort

  530. that this life

  531. is not as good

  532. as it gets

  533. and we can have

  534. assurance that

  535. whatever good

  536. we have now in part

  537. we will one day soon

  538. have in fullness

  539. of joy

  540. and perfect satisfaction.

  541. The realities

  542. of the kingdom of God

  543. give us hope

  544. for both now

  545. and for the future.

  546. this kingdom

  547. confronts our fear

  548. and doubt

  549. with love

  550. and peace

  551. and these are

  552. the glorious things

  553. spoken of the city

  554. of God

  555. in verse 3

  556. the grace

  557. that we have been given.

  558. Spurgeon said

  559. that although

  560. the glorious things

  561. were taught

  562. in the streets

  563. of Jerusalem

  564. and seen in her temple

  565. yet this is more

  566. true of the church.

  567. She is founded

  568. in grace

  569. but her pinnacles

  570. glow with glory.

  571. Whatever glorious things

  572. the saints may say

  573. of the church

  574. in their eulogies

  575. they cannot exceed

  576. what the prophets

  577. have foretold

  578. what the angels

  579. have sung

  580. or what God himself

  581. has decreed.

  582. Happy are the tongues

  583. which learn

  584. to occupy themselves

  585. with so excellent

  586. a subject.

  587. Glorious things

  588. of you are spoken

  589. O city of God.

  590. As Christians

  591. we will be

  592. in the great

  593. and glorious

  594. congregation

  595. of those

  596. of whom God says

  597. I love you

  598. and you are mine.

  599. I love seeing

  600. the receiving

  601. of new members

  602. this morning.

  603. It's such a wonderful

  604. thing hearing

  605. the vows of membership

  606. the proclamation

  607. of belonging

  608. to Christ

  609. and his church.

  610. And during the receiving

  611. of new members

  612. I always think about

  613. the words of Jesus

  614. in Luke 12 8

  615. he said this

  616. to his disciples

  617. and I tell you

  618. everyone who

  619. acknowledges me

  620. before men

  621. the son of man

  622. will also acknowledge

  623. before the angels

  624. of God.

  625. What an amazing promise.

  626. Just as we

  627. as members

  628. acknowledge

  629. our trust

  630. in Christ

  631. before these witnesses

  632. Jesus will one day

  633. acknowledge you

  634. and me

  635. before his father

  636. and the watching world.

  637. The Westminster

  638. Shorter Catechism

  639. question 38

  640. which since you guys

  641. are in 37 today

  642. this might be a spoiler

  643. for next week

  644. asks

  645. what benefits

  646. do believers receive

  647. from Christ

  648. at the resurrection?

  649. And the answer

  650. is this

  651. at the resurrection

  652. believers

  653. being raised up

  654. in glory

  655. shall be openly

  656. acknowledged

  657. and acquitted

  658. in the day of judgment

  659. and made perfectly

  660. blessed

  661. in the full

  662. enjoying of God

  663. to all eternity.

  664. See in the judgment

  665. believers will be

  666. revealed in splendor.

  667. You and I

  668. will stand

  669. before the throne

  670. of the Lord of hosts

  671. and he will openly

  672. declare us

  673. his sons and daughters

  674. to the entire

  675. assembled universe.

  676. He will place

  677. his joy

  678. and power

  679. upon us

  680. and we will reign

  681. with him

  682. in his kingdom

  683. forever.

  684. We are the sons

  685. and the daughters

  686. of God.

  687. Too often

  688. the cares

  689. of this world

  690. the pains

  691. of this life

  692. rob me

  693. of this joy

  694. and this hope.

  695. Too often

  696. I fall into

  697. the traps

  698. of self-pity

  699. and self-worship.

  700. We must all

  701. cling to the love

  702. that is ours

  703. in Christ.

  704. We are all

  705. called to remember

  706. the blessings

  707. that we have

  708. in him.

  709. Remember

  710. whose you are.

  711. Your identity

  712. is in him.

  713. Our son Mark

  714. is 20 months old

  715. and every night

  716. Callie and I sing

  717. Jesus loves me

  718. to him.

  719. Jesus loves me

  720. this I know

  721. for the Bible

  722. tells me so.

  723. We hope to instill

  724. him through many ways

  725. and part of that

  726. is through singing

  727. that he is known

  728. and loved by God.

  729. Jesus loves you son

  730. and do you know

  731. how I know this?

  732. He has told me so

  733. in his word.

  734. The Bible

  735. is true.

  736. Jesus loves you.

  737. Because of the love

  738. of Jesus

  739. which was lost

  740. in the garden

  741. of Eden

  742. it has been found

  743. in Christ.

  744. the barrier

  745. between God

  746. and man

  747. introduced by the fall

  748. was shattered

  749. on the cross.

  750. We are once again

  751. enabled to worship

  752. God without a priest

  753. without a human mediator

  754. without fear

  755. of our own blood.

  756. The kingdom focused church

  757. should never be driven

  758. by fear.

  759. The perfect love

  760. of the Father

  761. casts out that fear.

  762. We can have hope

  763. even in the midst

  764. of pain.

  765. We can trust him

  766. even when life

  767. is falling apart

  768. around us.

  769. And we can have

  770. this hope

  771. because we know

  772. the end.

  773. Here's another

  774. spoiler alert.

  775. Christ is coming back

  776. to claim us

  777. as his bride

  778. to fully reveal

  779. his kingdom of joy

  780. to you and me.

  781. The blood of the Lamb

  782. the perfect mediator

  783. stands triumphant

  784. for you.

  785. In our opening hymn

  786. John Newton wrote this

  787. Savior

  788. Savior

  789. if of Zion's city

  790. I through grace

  791. a member am

  792. let the world

  793. deride or pity

  794. I will glory

  795. in thy name.

  796. Fading is the worldling's

  797. pleasure

  798. all his boasted

  799. pomp and show

  800. solid joys

  801. and lasting treasure

  802. none but Zion's

  803. children know.

  804. Is there anything

  805. more glorious

  806. than knowing

  807. the love

  808. of God?

  809. The kingdom

  810. focused church

  811. is a people

  812. loved by God

  813. and the kingdom

  814. focused church

  815. lives out of

  816. the reality

  817. of that grace.

  818. The rest of

  819. Psalm 87

  820. is a divine

  821. pronouncement

  822. where God

  823. incorporates the

  824. foreign nation

  825. into his holy

  826. city.

  827. We as the church

  828. of God

  829. are founded

  830. in grace

  831. and we are

  832. called to live

  833. lives in that grace

  834. and reach out

  835. with that grace

  836. to the nations

  837. and peoples

  838. around us.

  839. Look at verse 4.

  840. Among those

  841. who know me

  842. I mention Rahab

  843. and Babylon.

  844. Behold

  845. Philistia

  846. and Tyre

  847. with Cush.

  848. This one

  849. was born there

  850. they say.

  851. This list

  852. of nations

  853. in verse 4

  854. is not your

  855. A team.

  856. These are not

  857. even your misfits

  858. or class clowns.

  859. These were

  860. the very enemies

  861. of God.

  862. They hated him

  863. and hated his people.

  864. Rahab

  865. in this context

  866. is another name

  867. for the nation

  868. of Egypt

  869. south of Israel

  870. who enslaved

  871. the people of God

  872. for hundreds of years.

  873. Babylon

  874. the great empire

  875. to the east

  876. were the ones

  877. to destroy Judah

  878. and carry the people

  879. into exile.

  880. Philistia

  881. the close neighbor

  882. to the west

  883. was constantly

  884. at war

  885. with Israel.

  886. Tyre

  887. to the north

  888. was always seeking

  889. to lead the people

  890. astray

  891. into idol worship.

  892. Cush

  893. is the distant land

  894. of Ethiopia

  895. and represented

  896. all the far-flung

  897. pagan nations.

  898. nations.

  899. And all of these nations

  900. north, south, east, and west

  901. and every far-flung land

  902. is here represented

  903. as knowing

  904. and being known

  905. by the God of Israel.

  906. Though they were born apart

  907. God has brought them

  908. into the kingdom

  909. into his family.

  910. In Psalm 86

  911. immediately

  912. preceding our psalm

  913. we read this prophecy

  914. in verse 9.

  915. All the nations

  916. you have made

  917. shall come

  918. and worship

  919. before you

  920. O Lord

  921. and shall glorify

  922. your name.

  923. We see this

  924. fulfilled in the New Testament

  925. and in the book

  926. of Revelation

  927. we see the culmination

  928. of this.

  929. Even future

  930. we see

  931. the final

  932. instance of this.

  933. At the end

  934. of all things present

  935. and the beginning

  936. of all things new

  937. John saw

  938. the new Jerusalem.

  939. Zion

  940. the city of the king.

  941. the kings of the earth

  942. you and I

  943. and the people

  944. from every tribe

  945. tongue and people

  946. will bring their glory

  947. into that city

  948. and the honor

  949. of the nations

  950. will be there

  951. in the light of Christ.

  952. Nothing unclean

  953. will enter it

  954. and in this

  955. we see the mighty glory

  956. of God

  957. that he pursues

  958. even his enemies

  959. with love

  960. and we too

  961. along with these nations

  962. were at one time

  963. enemies of God.

  964. We are these people

  965. I doubt many of you

  966. in here

  967. are ethnically

  968. the people of Israel.

  969. Most all of us

  970. are Gentiles

  971. who have been grafted in

  972. and given a place

  973. and identity

  974. in Zion.

  975. Verse 5

  976. And of Zion

  977. it shall be said

  978. this one

  979. and that one

  980. were born in her

  981. for the most high

  982. himself

  983. will establish her.

  984. The vision of

  985. Psalm 87

  986. is achieved

  987. in the church.

  988. As Paul writes

  989. in Galatians 3

  990. in Christ Jesus

  991. you are all

  992. sons of God

  993. through faith.

  994. For as many of you

  995. were baptized

  996. into Christ

  997. have put on Christ.

  998. There is neither

  999. Jew nor Greek.

  1000. There is neither

  1001. slave nor free.

  1002. There is no male

  1003. and female

  1004. for you are all

  1005. one in Christ Jesus.

  1006. And if you are

  1007. Christ's

  1008. then you are

  1009. Abraham's offspring

  1010. and heirs

  1011. according to the promise.

  1012. The most high

  1013. God has established

  1014. us in Christ.

  1015. in him

  1016. we are born again

  1017. from death

  1018. to life.

  1019. Verse 6

  1020. The Lord records

  1021. as he registers

  1022. the people

  1023. this one

  1024. was born there.

  1025. God

  1026. gathers us

  1027. individually

  1028. from our various

  1029. backgrounds

  1030. and circumstances

  1031. and gives us

  1032. citizenship

  1033. in his kingdom.

  1034. He takes our

  1035. brokenness

  1036. and forms us

  1037. into his church.

  1038. In Christ

  1039. there is new birth.

  1040. There is new

  1041. identity

  1042. and new

  1043. names.

  1044. We are forever

  1045. recorded in the

  1046. registry of God's

  1047. family.

  1048. Adoption has always

1049. been a part of my

  1050. story.

  1051. I was adopted on

  1052. March 19th

  1053. 1985

  1054. when I was

  1055. two months old

  1056. and on that day

  1057. my gotcha day

  1058. my parents left

  1059. their house

  1060. with an empty

  1061. car

  1062. and drove home

  1063. with a

  1064. fat

  1065. blue eyed

  1066. baby

  1067. who had no

  1068. idea

  1069. what was happening

  1070. to him.

  1071. From that moment

  1072. on

  1073. I was a

  1074. Bostrom

  1075. the son

  1076. of Gary

  1077. and Sarah

  1078. and several

  1079. years ago

  1080. I called my

  1081. mom because

  1082. I was curious

  1083. about my

  1084. original birth

  1085. certificate

  1086. which I'd

  1087. never seen.

  1088. She told me

  1089. that on the

  1090. day that my

  1091. adoption was

  1092. finalized

  1093. I was given

  1094. a new

  1095. birth certificate

  1096. a new

  1097. identity

  1098. my new

  1099. name on it.

  1100. The old

  1101. certificate was

  1102. destroyed

  1103. and forgotten.

  1104. I was

  1105. made new.

  1106. I was

  1107. Matthew

  1108. Joseph

  1109. Bostrom

  1110. their son

  1111. and my

  1112. earthly

  1113. adoption has

  1114. been for me

  1115. but a

  1116. small taste

  1117. of the

  1118. joy

  1119. and majesty

  1120. of being

  1121. a son

  1122. of God.

  1123. Christ has

  1124. given all

  1125. of us

  1126. a new

  1127. identity.

  1128. We are

  1129. his

  1130. and he has

  1131. even given

  1132. us a new

  1133. birth certificate.

  1134. Revelation

  1135. 13.8 tells

  1136. us that there

  1137. is a book

  1138. the book

  1139. of life

  1140. of the

  1141. lamb

  1142. who was

  1143. slain.

  1144. All

  1145. those who

  1146. belong to

  1147. God have

  1148. their names

  1149. written in

  1150. that book

  1151. of life

  1152. and our

  1153. names have

  1154. been written

  1155. before the

  1156. foundation of

  1157. the world

  1158. by the will

  1159. of God.

  1160. And if

  1161. you have

  1162. trusted in

  1163. Christ then

  1164. your name

  1165. is in that

  1166. book right

  1167. now never

  1168. to be

  1169. erased.

  1170. The blood

  1171. of Christ

  1172. the lamb

  1173. who is

  1174. slain

  1175. guarantees

  1176. your place

  1177. as a

  1178. son or

  1179. daughter.

  1180. His blood

  1181. is the

  1182. ink that

  1183. seals your

  1184. status.

  1185. We have

  1186. been indelibly

  1187. grafted into

  1188. the family

  1189. of God

  1190. and share

  1191. in his

  1192. kingdom.

  1193. As we

  1194. realized this

  1195. we were

  1196. able to

  1197. proclaim

  1198. with the

  1199. singers and

  1200. dancers in

  1201. verse 7

  1202. all my

  1203. springs are

  1204. in you.

  1205. As we

  1206. know the

  1207. realities of

  1208. our adoption

  1209. by God

  1210. as we

  1211. know our

  1212. identity

  1213. all our

  1214. joy

  1215. all our

  1216. hope

  1217. comes from

  1218. Christ.

  1219. To the

  1220. Israelites

  1221. the people

  1222. living in

  1223. an errant

  1224. environment

  1225. springs and

  1226. fountains were

  1227. precious

  1228. the source

  1229. of life

  1230. and joy

  1231. and as

  1232. Christians we

  1233. know that

  1234. every good

  1235. and perfect

  1236. gift comes

  1237. from God

  1238. and all our

  1239. trust should be

  1240. placed in him.

  1241. The Messiah

  1242. has come

  1243. bringing his

  1244. kingdom of

  1245. joy for

  1246. us.

  1247. So we

  1248. have to

  1249. ask what

  1250. does this

  1251. mean for

  1252. us today?

  1253. How do we

  1254. live in

  1255. light of

  1256. this kingdom?

  1257. It is often

  1258. hard for us

  1259. to find our

  1260. joy in

  1261. God.

  1262. We are not

  1263. yet in that

  1264. perfected city

  1265. of Zion.

  1266. We are

  1267. often times

  1268. in a land

  1269. that is

  1270. hostile to

  1271. God.

  1272. We have

  1273. been reconciled

  1274. to God

  1275. but still

  1276. live in a

  1277. world of

  1278. pain,

  1279. misery,

  1280. and death.

  1281. We await

  1282. the new

  1283. heavens and

  1284. the new

  1285. earth where

  1286. we will be

  1287. fully restored

  1288. but we live

  1289. here and

  1290. now.

  1291. But we do

  1292. not wait

  1293. idly as we

  1294. live here.

  1295. We have the

  1296. promise that we

  1297. are the

  1298. temples,

  1299. that the

  1300. spirit of

  1301. God is

  1302. now even

  1303. at work

  1304. in our

  1305. hearts and

  1306. lives and

  1307. we are

  1308. tasked with

  1309. bringing in

  1310. the harvest.

  1311. We are

  1312. called to

  1313. live faithfully

  1314. as stewards

  1315. of what God

  1316. has given

  1317. to us and

  1318. one day when

  1319. the master

  1320. returns he

  1321. will reward

  1322. us for that

  1323. faithfulness and

  1324. multiply blessings

  1325. to us.

  1326. Think about all

  1327. those people who

  1328. are enemies of

  1329. God in verse

  1330. four.

  1331. How in the

  1332. world were they

  1333. brought into the

  1334. kingdom?

  1335. How were they

  1336. made righteous

  1337. before a holy

  1338. God?

  1339. They were

  1340. enemies.

  1341. I have to

  1342. think that even

  1343. in the midst of

  1344. Israel's slavery,

  1345. exile, and

  1346. failures again and

  1347. again, there were

  1348. faithful people

  1349. reaching the

  1350. lost.

  1351. Men, women,

  1352. and children who

  1353. shared the hope

  1354. of the God of

  1355. Israel with

  1356. any who

  1357. would listen

  1358. to them.

  1359. And just

  1360. because we

  1361. are in exile

  1362. and longing for

  1363. our glorious

  1364. home does not

  1365. mean that we do

  1366. not share our

  1367. hope with our

  1368. captors.

  1369. We are to go

  1370. forth and

  1371. proclaim to the

  1372. watching world,

  1373. to enemies of

  1374. God, the joy

  1375. and life of

  1376. God.

  1377. In Jeremiah

  1378. 29, when the

  1379. people have been

  1380. conquered and

  1381. taken to

  1382. Babylon, when

  1383. Jerusalem was

  1384. destroyed and the

  1385. temple itself

  1386. torn down, when

  1387. all hope seemed

  1388. lost, the Lord

  1389. gave these words

  1390. to the people.

  1391. He says this,

  1392. Thus says the

  1393. Lord of hosts, the

  1394. God of Israel, to

  1395. all the exiles whom

  1396. I have sent into

  1397. exile from Jerusalem

  1398. to Babylon.

  1399. Build houses and

  1400. live in them, plant

  1401. gardens and eat

  1402. their produce, take

  1403. wives and have

  1404. sons and daughters,

  1405. take wives for

  1406. your sons and give

  1407. your daughters in

  1408. marriage, that they

  1409. may bear sons and

  1410. daughters.

  1411. Multiply there

  1412. and do not

  1413. decrease, but seek

  1414. the welfare of

  1415. the city where

  1416. I have sent

  1417. you into exile.

  1418. Pray to the

  1419. Lord on its

  1420. behalf, for in

  1421. its welfare you

  1422. will find your

  1423. welfare.

  1424. Our calling is to

  1425. be a light to

  1426. those around us,

  1427. for God has

  1428. promised that he

  1429. has a people from

  1430. every tribe, tongue

  1431. and nation.

  1432. We can be bold.

  1433. In Acts 15, Paul

  1434. is afraid to preach

  1435. to the Corinthians

  1436. who opposed him,

  1437. but the Lord said

  1438. to him at night,

  1439. Do not be afraid,

  1440. but go on speaking

  1441. and do not be

  1442. silent, for I am

  1443. with you, and no

  1444. one will attack you

1445. to harm you, for I

  1446. have many in this

  1447. city who are my

  1448. people.

  1449. God had called

  1450. Paul to this place

  1451. because he had

  1452. people there whose

  1453. names were in his

  1454. book, but had yet

  1455. not heard the voice

  1456. of Christ.

  1457. Do not be afraid,

  1458. but go on speaking.

  1459. Do not be silent.

  1460. Paul was called

  1461. into Corinth and we

  1462. are called to

  1463. Colorado Springs.

  1464. We are called

  1465. wherever we are

  1466. to be a witness

  1467. to the light of

  1468. God.

  1469. J. Gresham

  1470. Maycham says

  1471. something powerful

  1472. about faithful

  1473. kingdom living.

  1474. He writes this,

  1475. Instead of

  1476. obliterating the

  1477. distinction between

  1478. the kingdom and

  1479. the world, or on

  1480. the other hand

  1481. withdrawing from

  1482. the world into

  1483. some sort of

  1484. modernized intellectual

  1485. monasticism, let

  1486. us go joyfully,

  1487. enthusiastically to

  1488. make the world

  1489. the subject of

  1490. God.

  1491. To the Christian,

  1492. he cannot be

  1493. indifferent,

  1494. to any branch

  1495. of earnest

  1496. human endeavor.

  1497. It must all be

  1498. brought into some

  1499. relation into the

  1500. gospel.

  1501. The kingdom must

  1502. be advanced, not

  1503. merely extensively,

  1504. but also

  1505. intensively.

  1506. The church must

  1507. seek to conquer

  1508. not merely every

  1509. man for Christ,

  1510. but also the

  1511. whole of man.

  1512. The gospel is a

  1513. worldview-shaping

  1514. reality.

  1515. The kingdom of

  1516. Christ infiltrates

  1517. every area of our

  1518. lives and impacts

  1519. everything we do.

1520. We are called to be

  1521. faithful in the

  1522. small things that we

  1523. have before us as

  1524. well as the large.

1525. We are called to be

  1526. a people focused on

  1527. the grace that is

  1528. ours, seeking to

  1529. expand the kingdom of

  1530. God wherever he has

  1531. placed us.

1532. We have been given a

  1533. great commission to go

  1534. boldly into this world

  1535. knowing that the

1536. kingdom of God is at

  1537. hand.

  1538. God loves you.

  1539. He loves us.

  1540. He has and will

  1541. continue to be

  1542. gracious to us.

1543. He has given us a

1544. name and a family and

1545. he is coming in power

  1546. bringing his peace.

1547. We are about to sing

1548. the hymn, I love thy

  1549. kingdom, Lord.

  1550. And listen to the

  1551. words of this first

  1552. verse.

  1553. I love thy kingdom,

  1554. Lord, the house of

  1555. thine abode, the church

  1556. our blessed redeemer

  1557. saved with his own

  1558. precious blood.

1559. And I pray that those

1560. words would be true of

  1561. your heart, that you

1562. would love the bride of

  1563. Christ who is bought

  1564. with his blood, that

  1565. this church would seek

  1566. to expand the kingdom

  1567. of God, that you

1568. would long to see your

  1569. king in his splendor.

1570. May your joy, your hope

  1571. and your delight ever

1572. be that the kingdom of

1573. God is come, that it

  1574. has become the kingdom

  1575. of this world, has

  1576. become the kingdom of

1577. our God and of his

1578. Christ and he shall reign

1579. forever and ever as the

1580. king of kings and the

  1581. Lord of lords.

  1582. Forever and ever.

  1583. Hallelujah.

  1584. Let us pray.

  1585. Father, we thank you

  1586. that in you glorious

1587. things are spoken of us.

  1588. In you there is

  1589. graciousness to us, that

  1590. you have condescended to

  1591. us.

  1592. Lord, we were your

  1593. enemies, we were far

  1594. off, we were these

  1595. foreign nations that you

  1596. have brought.

1597. Lord, I pray that this

  1598. joy, this reality, this

  1599. identity would permeate

1600. our lives, that we would

  1601. be faithful.

1602. Lord, that the light that

1603. you have given to us in

  1604. Christ would shine from

1605. us, that it would exude

1606. from our pores and touch

  1607. everything that we come

  1608. in contact with.

1609. Lord, I pray that you

  1610. would make us into

  1611. kingdom individuals, but

1612. not leave us alone as

  1613. individuals.

1614. I pray that we would

  1615. unite in this, your

1616. church, that we would be

1617. missional as we see the

1618. world around us lost and

  1619. broken.

  1620. We have hope and

1621. truth and life in you.

  1622. Lord, I thank you.

1623. In your name we pray.

  1624. Amen.
