  1. Verse 3, it's printed in your worship guide.

  2. You also can find it on your phone.

  3. You can find it potentially in your Bible if you brought that with you.

  4. And as we come to this, remember that this is God's word.

  5. And God tells us that his word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path.

  6. In other words, God has not left us to walk alone in the dark, stumbling.

  7. But instead, he's given us his word to show us the way to go.

  8. And so that's why we read it starting with verse 3.

  9. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  10. According to his great mercy, he has caused us to be born again to a living hope

  11. through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead.

  12. Verse 4, to an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading.

  13. Kept in heaven for you, verse 5,

  14. who by God's power are being guarded through faith for a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time.

  15. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  16. Father in heaven, we praise you and we thank you.

  17. And we thank you that you haven't left us alone, but that you've spoken to us.

  18. We thank you that your word is powerful.

  19. That it's your word that brings dead things to life.

  20. It was your word that created the world.

  21. It's your word that called us to faith in you.

  22. And it's your word that you give to us this morning.

  23. We ask that you would help us as we come to it.

  24. That you would speak to us clearly in ways, in words that we can understand.

  25. Because you know that we're but dust.

  26. We ask that you would do that now and that we would leave here loving you more and knowing you more.

  27. And believing that you are worth it and that you're our Father.

  28. We ask these things not because we deserve them, but because Jesus has earned them for us.

  29. And so we ask them in his name.

  30. Amen.

  31. Amen.

  32. Amen.

  33. So a few weeks ago before we started 1 Peter, we looked at, I believe it was Psalm 133, which talked about the beauty and glory of relationships.

  34. And if you've been in the church for a while, you've lived in communities, you know there are varying levels of relationships, especially when it comes to closeness.

  35. There's people that maybe you just greet them on Sunday morning.

  36. There's people maybe they come over to your house if you invite them.

  37. And then maybe you've gotten to kind of the highest level of a relationship.

  38. You have people who they'll drop by your house even if you don't invite them.

  39. Now hopefully you have that kind of relationship with them.

  40. There are certain people that have folks in their lives who drop by to their house uninvited even though they don't have that kind of relationship.

  41. That's a different discussion.

  42. But you know as we grow in community, there's people that we become closer and closer with.

  43. We live life with them together in their houses constantly.

  44. Some of you in this church have those kinds of relationships.

  45. Peter, writing this letter, had that kind of relationship with Jesus.

  46. He had a drop by the house anytime kind of relationship.

  47. In fact, it was probably more than that.

  48. We have indications in the Gospels that Peter and Jesus lived in the same house.

  49. When Jesus was in Capernaum where he met Peter, he would probably spend his time at Peter's family's house.

  50. At one point, they were so close that Jesus healed Peter's mother-in-law.

  51. Now if you're like me, sometimes when you open up your phone, if you swipe to a certain section, it will give you suggestions about what you should do.

  52. It will list maybe apps that you open a lot.

  53. I'll get suggestions about who I should be texting.

  54. And it's usually based on who I've been texting a lot recently.

  55. When Peter opened up his phone, he got a suggestion to text Jesus.

  56. When Jesus, if he lived today, opened up his iPhone, he may have gotten the suggestion to text Peter, James, or John.

  57. Because those are the ones that were closest to him.

  58. And so Peter had this incredibly close relationship with Jesus.

  59. And there's another thing that's less known about Peter that people don't always tell you.

  60. And that's Peter has a verb that goes next to his name constantly in the Gospels.

  61. And that's the verb remember.

  62. Peter is the one who remembers.

  63. And that's why church history tells us that Peter was the source for much of the Gospel of Mark.

  64. Because his job was to remember what Jesus taught his disciples.

  65. It's with that in mind that we come to verse 3.

  66. Peter tells us, according to his great mercy that's talking about God, he has caused us to be born again.

  67. Peter is telling us what he learned from Jesus.

  68. We read it as our preparation to worship this morning from John chapter 3.

    John 3 chapter mention

  69. Jesus has this conversation with Nicodemus about what it means to love him and follow him.

  70. And he says it's like being born again.

  71. In other words, becoming a Christian is so radical, it's like becoming a whole new person.

  72. There's a whole new identity and reality that you exist in.

  73. And there's all kinds of things I could tell you about the new birth.

  74. We could spend multiple sermons talking about what it means to be born again.

  75. What this is that Jesus was teaching that Peter remembered.

  76. But Peter gives us a couple things to focus on specifically in this passage.

  77. First of all, it's that he's been born again, not just in general, but we've been born again.

  78. This is still verse 3, to a living hope.

  79. And he's also going to tell us, verse 4, that we've been born again to an inheritance.

  80. When I was growing up, like some of you, I, during the summers, I would go to summer camp.

  81. And this was in the forest of West Virginia, right outside the George Washington National Park.

  82. And my brothers and I loved going to camp.

  83. It was one of our favorite things.

  84. In fact, we loved it so much that there was one year, one of us had a camp-themed birthday party

  85. where we tried to reenact what it was like to be at camp for our birthday party

  86. because we just thought it was the best.

  87. We looked forward all year to going to camp.

  88. We loved being there with the other kids, doing all these fun things outdoors.

  89. And so it was wonderful, except for one year.

  90. So I grew up going to camp, elementary school.

  91. And then I got to junior high, and I was no longer able to go to the camp

  92. where you just, you know, shoot guns and shoot bows and arrows, but you had to pick an activity.

  93. And so I decided that year I was going to go to a go-kart camp.

  94. And so you'd show up for the week, and you'd have different teams of kids,

  95. and they would build a go-kart, and the goal was at the end of the week you'd get to race it.

  96. Now that sounds wonderful.

  97. It was terrible.

  98. And it was terrible because this was a camp on a shoestring budget,

  99. and so part of what they would do is they'd break up these teams,

  100. and they'd have different volunteers who would lead them.

  101. So you'd have dads who had a background in mechanics who'd take a group of kids,

  102. and they'd say, okay, we're going to build this go-kart, this dad's going to lead this go-kart, so-and-so.

  103. I got on a team with a dad and his son and me.

  104. And this dad and his son had an amazing time building their go-kart that week.

  105. However, they didn't invite me to help them with things.

  106. I mean, I was there.

  107. I was 12 or 13 at the time.

  108. I didn't really know exactly how to self-advocate, you know.

  109. I would ask them at times, what can I do?

  110. There wasn't really a lot.

  111. And this father that I was working with wasn't the greatest man in the world.

  112. At one point, he would tell us, you know, these other teams,

  113. they're not going to win at the end of the week

  114. because they don't understand how wheel alignment works in the front of go-karts.

  115. Like, we're 12.

  116. We're not supposed to understand how wheel alignment works in the front of go-karts.

  117. It was terrible.

  118. On top of that, there was this other punk in my cabin.

  119. And he and I had interacted in previous summers,

  120. and he let me know that he had some tricks.

  121. He and his dad had figured out, you know, the right way to race go-karts.

  122. He was not going to share that with me, however.

  123. Capone, you're not going to get in on our secrets.

  124. It was awful.

  125. It was my worst week at camp.

  126. It was awful day after day, feeling like I was excluded from these people.

  127. I didn't belong right there of a different birth than I am.

  128. There's a father and a son.

  129. I can't break into this.

  130. I'm supposed to be having this amazing week building go-karts.

  131. And yet it turned out to be quite the opposite, right?

  132. I was feeling out of place in this situation.

  133. Wasn't doing what I was supposed to be doing.

  134. I was shut out.

  135. But I had one hope.

  136. With this camp, you got dropped off on a Sunday,

  137. and it went all the way until the next Saturday.

  138. And I knew that when Saturday came, there was a road in the camp,

  139. a dirt gravel road that ran across a creek on a bridge,

  140. and then it ran into camp.

  141. And I knew that on Saturday morning,

  142. rolling down that road with dirt blowing behind it,

  143. there was going to be a red manual transmission,

  144. 1998 Subaru Forester rolling down the road,

  145. probably in second gear.

  146. And behind the wheel of that 1998 red Subaru Forester

  147. was going to be Charles Capone Jr., my father.

  148. And no matter what happened that week,

  149. I knew at the end, he was going to come and pick me up.

  150. And that wasn't a faint hope.

  151. It was a living hope.

  152. It was a living hope because my father was alive.

  153. It was also a living hope because I knew my father's character,

  154. and Charles Capone Jr. was not going to be late on Saturday morning to pick me up.

  155. He had picked me up in previous years from camp.

  156. He was my father, right?

  157. He loved me, he cared for me.

  158. There was no way he was going to forget that that was his day

  159. to come to camp and give me full and final salvation from this situation.

  160. Why does it matter that God is our father?

  161. No matter what happens in this world,

  162. no matter what the people reading this letter face,

  163. they know no matter what,

  164. God is going to come for them.

  165. And he is going to give them,

  166. verse 5,

  167. a salvation

  168. that's going to be revealed in the last time.

  169. And when he comes back,

  170. he is not coming back

  171. on a red manual transmission,

  172. 1998 Subaru Forester,

  173. but he is coming back,

  174. as the Old and the New Testament tells us,

  175. on the clouds with all authority

  176. and power and glory and dominion.

  177. And as Philippians 2,

  178. chapter 2, verse 10 tells us,

  179. every knee is going to bow down

  180. and every tongue confess that Jesus is Lord.

  181. Because God is our father,

  182. we know that he is coming for us.

  183. And no matter what happens in this world,

  184. nothing can change that.

  185. It's according to his great mercy.

  186. This is the word from the Old Testament

  187. that we've translated as God's never stopping,

  188. never giving up, unbreaking,

  189. always and forever love.

  190. He's called us to be born again to a living hope.

  191. It's not a dead hope.

  192. It's a living hope because Jesus is alive.

  193. It's happened through the resurrection

  194. of Jesus Christ from the dead.

  195. Because Jesus died and actually rose from the dead,

  196. these people have real hope in real time

  197. because God is their father.

  198. As they look back to something

  199. that actually happened in the past

  200. that Jesus died and rose from the dead,

  201. they can also look forward

  202. to a real historical event

  203. that is going to happen when Jesus comes back.

  204. And so they can live in the present

  205. with hope and faith

  206. no matter what's going on around them.

  207. Now Peter would have known

  208. that Jesus rose from the dead.

  209. And he would have known

  210. because he would have met Jesus

  211. after he rose from the dead.

  212. Peter interacted with Jesus.

  213. He walked with Jesus.

  214. One thing that Peter's going to tell us

  215. later in this letter

  216. is that we need to have a reason

  217. for the hope that's within us.

  218. In other words,

  219. we need to know why it is

  220. that we believe that Jesus rose from the dead.

  221. We need to know why we have a living hope.

  222. Now of course ultimately we have this living hope

  223. because God works it in us through his spirit,

  224. but of course there's many things

  225. that encourage us that he uses.

  226. One of them is the testimony of Peter.

  227. Remember that Peter is a middle class fisherman,

  228. small business owner,

  229. and after Jesus died

  230. he could have easily gone back to that business.

  231. There's no indication

  232. that there was a tank

  233. in the fish business in Capernaum

  234. during the couple years

  235. when Peter was following Jesus.

  236. In fact, we were told

  237. at the very end of the Gospel of John

  238. that Peter did that at one point.

  239. He went back to his fishing boat.

  240. Had Jesus not risen from the dead,

  241. Peter would have had every reason

  242. to go back to his old life.

  243. But instead, because he knew

  244. and had experienced

  245. that Jesus had risen from the dead,

  246. he chose something

  247. that was much more challenging,

  248. hard, and difficult.

  249. He chose something

  250. that was going to be less lucrative

  251. for him financially.

  252. Instead of going back to his job

  253. as a fisherman,

  254. he followed after Jesus,

  255. preaching about him.

  256. We see this in the book of Acts

  257. and suffering for him.

  258. Peter's testimony

  259. is part of the reason

  260. that we have confidence

  261. in Jesus' resurrection from the dead.

  262. Why else would Peter,

  263. a man who hated suffering,

  264. choose to suffer?

  265. And why else would Peter,

  266. a man who could have gone back

  267. to fishing,

  268. instead transition

  269. to preaching the Gospel

  270. and being persecuted for it?

  271. Peter does it

  272. because he knows

  273. that God is his Father

  274. who has caused him

  275. to be born again

  276. to a living hope

  277. through the resurrection

  278. of Jesus Christ

  279. from the dead.

  280. And so that no matter what,

  281. he has a salvation

  282. that's ready to be revealed

  283. in the last time.

  284. If we have faith in Christ,

  285. the same is true of us.

  286. Saying that God is our Father

  287. is not a sentimental story

  288. to end a sermon.

  289. And it's not a line

  290. in a devotional

  291. to make us have a warm feeling.

  292. But it is the actual reality

  293. and fact

  294. that we need to know

  295. to give us hope,

  296. to look forward

  297. as we live now

  298. to what God is going to do

  299. in the future

  300. and we have confidence in that

  301. because of what he has done

  302. in the past.

  303. And that is how

  304. we're going to be able

  305. to do

  306. what Peter is going to tell us

  307. at the very end

  308. of chapter 5

  309. which is stand firm.

  310. That's why it matters

  311. that God

  312. is our Father.

  313. That's not the only thing

  314. that this new birth

  315. has given, however.

  316. When I was at this camp

  317. and things weren't going well,

  318. this was in West Virginia.

  319. Now I didn't live

  320. in West Virginia.

  321. I lived in Southern Maryland

  322. right outside Washington, D.C.

  323. And while I was at camp,

  324. my home in Southern Maryland

  325. still existed.

  326. Imagine that.

  327. I had a room in this home.

  328. That room could not be touched

  329. by anything that happened

  330. at the camp.

  331. I had relationships

  332. at this home.

  333. I had a family.

  334. There is nothing

  335. that happened

  336. in West Virginia

  337. that could touch that.

  338. When Peter says,

  339. we've been born again

  340. to an inheritance

  341. that is imperishable,

  342. undefiled,

  343. and unfading,

  344. kept in heaven for you,

  345. he is saying

  346. not only

  347. what we've already seen

  348. that no matter

  349. what happens,

  350. God is coming for us.

  351. He's also saying

  352. that no matter

  353. what happens,

  354. there is nothing

  355. in this world

  356. that can touch

  357. or affect

  358. what God

  359. is preparing,

  360. has prepared,

  361. and is securing

  362. for us.

  363. Nothing that happens

  364. to these readers

  365. in modern-day Turkey

  366. as they're experiencing

  367. persecution

  368. as Christians

  369. will affect

  370. their inheritance.

  371. It cannot be touched.

  372. It's imperishable.

  373. Nothing can ruin it.

  374. It's undefiled.

  375. Sin doesn't have

  376. any effect.

  377. It's unfading.

  378. No matter how long

  379. it's there,

  380. it will still be

  381. as beautiful as ever,

  382. and it's kept

  383. in heaven for you.

  384. When I was in

  385. West Virginia,

  386. just because I was

  387. separated from my

  388. home in Maryland

  389. did not make that

  390. home any less real.

  391. When we live

  392. in this world

  393. feeling out of place

  394. and facing opposition

  395. from the world

  396. and in the world,

  397. the fact that we

  398. cannot see

  399. and are not

  400. with our inheritance

  401. from God

  402. right now

  403. does not make it

  404. any less real.

  405. The salvation

  406. that's talked about

  407. in verse 5

  408. is not just

  409. a salvation from,

  410. but it's a salvation to.

  411. My Father

  412. was not just coming

  413. in his Subaru Forester

  414. to rescue me

  415. and provide

  416. a salvation

  417. to be revealed

  418. in the last time

  419. from West Virginia,

  420. but he was also

  421. taking me back

  422. to Maryland.

  423. The readers

  424. of this letter

  425. are not just going

  426. to experience

  427. salvation

  428. from

  429. their struggles

  430. in this world.

  431. They're also being

  432. delivered to

  433. this full

  434. and robust

  435. salvation

  436. that includes

  437. their inheritance.

  438. They have become,

  439. because God

  440. has adopted them

  441. through the resurrection

  442. of Jesus Christ

  443. from the dead,

  444. brothers and sisters

  445. of Jesus

  446. and sons

  447. and daughters

  448. of God,

  449. which means

  450. that they are heirs.

  451. Everything that God

  452. has given

  453. his son

  454. belongs to them

  455. as well.

  456. That's the full

  457. salvation.

  458. Of course,

  459. the salvation

  460. includes being removed

  461. from the penalty

  462. of sin,

  463. right?

  464. It's not less than that,

  465. but it's more than that.

  466. It's taking part

  467. in the world

  468. that God has prepared

  469. that no longer

  470. has the effects

  471. or presence of sin.

  472. It's like the new creation.

  473. It's like the original creation

  474. in Genesis 1 and 2

  475. and even better.

  476. And not only is it even better,

  477. it's like the creation

  478. that never had Genesis 3.

  479. No sin was introduced.

  480. That's what these people

  481. have to look forward to.

  482. Why does it matter

  483. that God's their father?

  484. It matters that God's their father

  485. because he has given them

  486. and is and will give them

  487. an inheritance.

  488. And it's an inheritance

  489. that cannot be touched

  490. by anything

  491. in this world.

  492. It's kept in heaven,

  493. verse 4,

  494. for you.

  495. Now, how do they access

  496. all these privileges

  497. of the sons and daughters

  498. of God?

  499. Peter tells us

  500. that this is something

  501. that happens through faith,

  502. verse 5.

  503. Now, we've talked about faith before.

  504. Remember, faith is three things.

  505. It's, first of all,

  506. knowledge.

  507. It's knowing the facts,

  508. knowing that Jesus died

  509. for our sins

  510. and he rose again from the dead,

  511. that he's paid the penalty

  512. that we deserve

  513. and therefore we're going

  514. to have life with him.

  515. It's not just knowledge,

  516. though it's belief.

  517. It's actually believing

  518. that those things are true.

  519. And then finally,

  520. it's not just belief,

  521. but trust,

  522. living as if those things

  523. are true.

  524. And what does that faith

  525. look like?

  526. Well,

  527. it looks like

  528. Peter kind of faith.

  529. Peter had so much faith

  530. that when Jesus

  531. was suffering

  532. and praying,

  533. Peter fell asleep.

  534. Peter had so much faith

  535. that when Jesus

  536. was going to the cross

  537. and people asked Peter

  538. if he knew Jesus,

  539. Peter said no

  540. because he was afraid

  541. of being persecuted.

  542. And Peter had so much faith

  543. that after Jesus

  544. went back to heaven

  545. and he'd been given

  546. his mission

  547. to evangelize,

  548. there was one point

  549. where he avoided the Jews

  550. because he thought

  551. it would embarrass him.

  552. And so Paul

  553. had to come

  554. and rebuke him.

  555. That's the kind of faith

  556. Peter had.

  557. That's the kind of faith

  558. that God uses,

  559. faith that is imperfect,

  560. flawed,

  561. and faltering

  562. to provide

  563. his sons

  564. and his daughters

  565. with salvation

  566. and an inheritance.

  567. And that faith

  568. God used

  569. in Peter's life

  570. to grow him.

  571. And so he also

  572. had other kinds of faith.

  573. He had the kind of faith

  574. in the book of Acts

  575. where he boldly

  576. proclaimed the gospel

  577. even when it led him

  578. to suffering.

  579. And Peter had

  580. the kind of faith

  581. that at the end

  582. of his life

  583. he was willing

  584. to be crucified

  585. upside down

  586. because he did not believe,

  587. this is what church history

  588. tells us,

  589. he did not believe

  590. that he was worthy

  591. of suffering a death

  592. like Jesus did.

  593. He believed he needed

  594. something that was

  595. a step further

  596. going upside down.

  597. In other words,

  598. it is Peter's faith,

  599. verse 5,

  600. but also,

  601. verse 5,

  602. God's power.

  603. these people

  604. facing the potential

  605. of loss

  606. in this world,

  607. perhaps wondering

  608. if they have

  609. what it takes

  610. to stand strong

  611. and remain firm,

  612. have the example

  613. of Peter

  614. who's writing to them

  615. who failed

  616. over and over again

  617. as an illustration

  618. of God's power

  619. to his people

  620. in their weakness,

  621. guarding them

  622. and holding them firm.

  623. We're told in verse 4,

  624. this inheritance

  625. is kept in heaven

  626. for you,

  627. so the inheritance

  628. is being guarded

  629. who by God's power

  630. you are also

  631. being guarded

  632. through faith

  633. for salvation

  634. ready to be revealed

  635. in the last time.

  636. In other words,

  637. we can't lose

  638. our inheritance

  639. because if we have

  640. faith in Christ,

  641. God refuses

  642. to lose us.

  643. We cannot lose

  644. our inheritance

  645. because God

  646. refuses to lose us.

  647. It is by faith

  648. our faith,

  649. but it's not

  650. our power.

  651. It was Peter's faith,

  652. not Peter's power.

  653. the beginning

  654. of his time

  655. with Peter,

  656. Jesus says to him,

  657. calls him,

  658. he calls him

  659. to follow after him.

  660. And then Peter

  661. fails dramatically

  662. as I've already

  663. discussed

  664. in this sermon.

  665. And so he goes

  666. back to what he knows,

  667. he goes back

  668. and fishes again.

  669. This is at the end

  670. of the Gospel of John.

  671. And Jesus comes

  672. and finds him

  673. and performs

  674. the same miracle

  675. that he did

  676. at the very beginning.

  677. He causes Peter again

  678. to catch a whole boat

  679. full of fish

  680. when he can't catch anything.

  681. And then he makes

  682. Peter breakfast

  683. over the same

  684. type of charcoal

  685. that was in the fire

  686. that Peter was standing by

  687. when he betrayed Jesus.

  688. And finally,

  689. at the end,

  690. Peter asks him

  691. about another disciple

  692. and Jesus says,

  693. Peter,

  694. don't worry about

  695. that other disciple.

  696. You follow me.

  697. Peter's faith,

  698. God's power,

  699. calling him

  700. over and over again

  701. despite Peter's

  702. failures and mistakes.

  703. It is Jesus

  704. who comes to him

  705. with his grace,

  706. the same grace

  707. that Peter offers

  708. to his readers now,

  709. helping them understand

  710. why it matters

  711. that God is their father

  712. and why that's not

  713. a sentiment

  714. but a true

  715. and living hope

  716. that they can,

  717. like he has,

  718. stake their lives on.

  719. And so he offers

  720. that same power

  721. to anyone else

  722. who is willing

  723. to follow after him

  724. like Peter

  725. in faith.

  726. Why does it matter

  727. that God is our father?

  728. it matters

  729. because he is coming

  730. back for us

  731. to provide a salvation

  732. in the last time.

  733. And it also,

  734. and there's nothing

  735. in this world

  736. that happens

  737. that can threaten that

  738. and take us from it.

  739. It also matters

  740. that he is our father

  741. because he has provided

  742. an inheritance for us

  743. and no matter

  744. what is taken away

  745. from us in this world,

  746. that inheritance

  747. cannot be touched.

  748. And finally,

  749. God being our father

  750. matters because

  751. like my father

  752. driving down the road

  753. in West Virginia,

  754. it is not us

  755. and our faith

  756. that seek out God.

  757. But like with Peter,

  758. it is God

  759. and his power

  760. that seeks out us

  761. and guards us

  762. through faith

  763. for salvation.

  764. And so that's why

  765. we can say

  766. as Peter begins here,

  767. verse 3,

  768. blessed be the God

  769. and father

  770. of our Lord

  771. Jesus Christ.

  772. Please pray with me.

  773. Father in heaven,

  774. we thank you

  775. that you are our father.

  776. And we thank you

  777. that we can approach you

  778. boldly,

  779. knowing that you guard us.

  780. And while it's our

  781. small and weak

  782. and feeble

  783. and faltering faith,

  784. it is your power

  785. that holds us

  786. and keeps us,

  787. we ask that you

  788. would help us,

  789. that you'd remind us

  790. of the hope

  791. that you hold out to us

  792. and you'd help us

  793. to stand firm.

  794. We ask these things

  795. not because we have

  796. earned them,

  797. but because Jesus

  798. has earned them for us

  799. and so we ask them

  800. in his name.

  801. Amen.
