  1. Good morning.

  2. My name is Matthew Capone, and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church,

  3. and it's my joy to bring God's Word to you today.

  4. If you're new or visiting with us, welcome.

  5. We're glad that you're here.

  6. And we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats,

  7. but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  8. And as we follow Jesus together, we've become convinced that there's no one so good

  9. that they don't need God's grace, and no one's so bad that they can't have it,

  10. which means that God has something to say to every one of us in His Word,

  11. which is why we keep coming back week after week.

  12. If you've been with us, you know that we're in the book of 1 Peter,

  13. and the book of 1 Peter is a letter.

  14. It's a letter written by a man named Peter,

  15. and he writes it in the first century to churches that are in modern-day Turkey,

  16. and he writes it to do two things.

  17. He writes it to encourage them and also to instruct them.

  18. He wants to encourage them that Jesus is worth it,

  19. Jesus is worth living for, He's worth loving for,

  20. and that Jesus is worth suffering for, and He's worth dying for.

  21. And he doesn't just write them to encourage them,

  22. but he also writes them to instruct them,

  23. that they would know how they should live as Christians in the world,

  24. and that they would also know how to respond when they face opposition from the world.

  25. That's the situation that they're in.

  26. They're feeling out of place in the world,

  27. facing opposition from the world,

  28. and so that's why Peter writes to them,

  29. to encourage them and instruct them in that situation.

  30. Now, the last couple weeks, we've been heavy on encouragement.

  31. Peter tells them in verses 1 and 2 that they're exiles,

  32. but they're also chosen.

  33. He helps them understand their identity.

  34. They've been chosen by God, and they belong to God,

  35. which means they also feel out of place in this world.

  36. And then we looked last week at what it means that God is their Father.

  37. It means that they have an inheritance,

  38. and it also means that God is coming back for them.

  39. And so all this is great encouragement,

  40. and still, Peter's readers are in the situation of feeling out of place,

  41. and facing what Peter's going to refer to as trials.

  42. And so despite all this encouragement,

  43. they're still in the same place they've been left in.

  44. They're still facing these struggles.

  45. And Peter's not unaware of that,

  46. and so he's going to continue his encouragement this week,

  47. and he's going to address how to find hope in suffering.

  48. And so part of our question this morning is going to be,

  49. how do we find hope in and through suffering?

  50. And as we come to this,

  51. it's important to give some clarity,

  52. some definitions for suffering,

  53. because when we talk about suffering as Christians,

  54. we're often talking about all sorts of different things

  55. that fall into different categories.

  56. And I'm going to give you at least three different categories

  57. for suffering that we find in the Bible.

  58. First of all, category number one,

  59. there's just general suffering.

  60. This is suffering that we face

  61. because we live in a world where sin and evil are present.

  62. If you lose someone that you love dearly,

  63. it's not necessarily your fault.

  64. That's just the result of evil and destruction in this world.

  65. If you face a debilitating illness,

  66. that's general suffering.

  67. Not necessarily your fault.

  68. It's not necessarily something that you did,

  69. but it's the result of sin in this world.

  70. Second kind of suffering is suffering

  71. that happens because of foolishness or sin on your part.

  72. So if you go to Cripple Creek

  73. and you put it all in black

  74. and then you walk away

  75. and you're $25,000 in debt,

  76. that is a type of suffering.

  77. That's suffering because of your foolishness.

  78. That's suffering type number two.

  79. And all of us experience at various times

  80. and in various degrees

  81. suffering of types one and type two,

  82. whether we're Christians or not Christians,

  83. because we live in this world

  84. where people who make foolish decisions

  85. and we're people who face the consequences of sin.

  86. And then there's category number three,

  87. the third and final category of suffering.

  88. And this is suffering that happens

  89. because we follow Jesus Christ.

  90. And so this is not suffering that happens to all people,

  91. both those inside the church and outside of the church,

  92. but this is specifically suffering

  93. that happens to people who love Jesus

  94. and follow Jesus.

  95. As we come to this passage this morning,

  96. we are going to be talking about type number three.

  97. And I don't mean to minimize one in two types of suffering,

  98. but I want us to be clear

  99. about what the Bible is talking about

  100. in specific passages.

  101. And so I don't want to make the right point to you

  102. from the wrong passage.

  103. And so just from the front,

  104. we're talking about the kind of suffering that comes

  105. because we love the name of Jesus Christ

  106. and we follow him.

  107. This is the kind of suffering

  108. that the receivers of Peter's letter are facing.

  109. They're facing social ostracization, probably.

  110. People are talking bad about them.

  111. They're slandering them,

  112. Peter tells them at one point.

  113. They're saying that they believe things,

  114. perhaps, that they don't believe.

  115. They're saying things about them that are not true.

  116. Maybe they have the loss of job opportunities

  117. or employment because of their faith in Christ.

  118. That is the kind of suffering

  119. that these believers are facing.

  120. And so we're going to talk about

  121. how do we find joy in suffering,

  122. suffering specifically for the name of Jesus Christ.

  123. The second thing we have to clear up

  124. right from the front

  125. is we talk about suffering

  126. when American Christians,

  127. Christians in North America,

  128. think about suffering.

  129. Often we think of

  130. the place that we live

  131. as a place of great struggle for Christians.

  132. Now there's an organization called Open Doors

  133. and they make a ranking

  134. of the most difficult, challenging countries

  135. where it is to be a Christian,

  136. the places where Christians face

  137. the most difficult persecution.

  138. And they only rank the top 50 countries.

  139. What number do you think the USA is

  140. on the top 50 countries

  141. of places where it's difficult to be a Christian?

  142. We don't make the list.

  143. We live in one of the easiest places

  144. and times to be a Christian.

  145. And so it's helpful and important

  146. to keep that in mind

  147. as we come to this passage.

  148. We're not people with a victim complex

  149. who are constantly talking about

  150. how difficult and hard it is

  151. for us to be Christians on the one hand.

  152. On the other hand,

  153. we're aware of the difficulty

  154. of being a Christian around the world.

  155. One in nine Christians right now

  156. face intense persecution.

  157. And we're also aware

  158. that just because we live in a country

  159. where it's very easy to be a Christian,

  160. there are still times

  161. where, like the readers of 1 Peter,

  162. we feel out of place in this world.

  163. And so on the one hand,

  164. I don't want to minimize

  165. what it is that we experience as Christians.

  166. On the other hand,

  167. I don't want to exaggerate it.

  168. We face real struggle and suffering

  169. in this world because we're Christians.

  170. And if we lived in another country,

  171. it would be a lot worse.

  172. With that,

  173. how do we find joy in suffering?

  174. That's our question.

  175. We're going to be in 1 Peter 1,

  176. starting at verse 6.

  177. And as we come to verse 6,

  178. you can find it to read along

  179. in your worship guide

  180. or on your phone or in your Bible.

  181. And remember that this is God's word.

  182. And God tells us that his word

  183. is more precious than gold,

  184. even the finest gold.

  185. And it's sweeter than honey,

  186. even honey that comes

  187. straight from the honeycomb.

  188. And so that's why we're so intent

  189. to learn from God in his word.

  190. And so we're going to read now,

  191. starting in verse 6.

  192. In this you rejoice,

  193. though now for a little while,

  194. if necessary,

  195. you have been grieved by various trials,

  196. so that the tested genuineness of your faith,

  197. more precious than gold that perishes,

  198. though it is tested by fire,

  199. may be found to result in praise

  200. and glory and honor

  201. at the revelation of Jesus Christ.

  202. Verse 8.

  203. Though you have not seen him,

  204. you love him.

  205. Though you do not now see him,

  206. you believe in him

  207. and rejoice with joy

  208. that is inexpressible

  209. and filled with glory,

  210. obtaining the outcome of your faith,

  211. the salvation of your souls.

  212. I invite you to pray with me

  213. as we come to this portion of God's word.

  214. Father in heaven,

  215. we thank you,

  216. as we do every week,

  217. for your word.

  218. We have not seen Jesus,

  219. but we love him.

  220. And we don't see him,

  221. but we believe in him.

  222. And so we want to rejoice

  223. with joy that's inexpressible.

  224. We thank you that even though

  225. we haven't seen Jesus,

  226. you have given us your word.

  227. And so we ask that you would use it

  228. this morning to help us.

  229. You'd use it to help us understand

  230. how we can rejoice in our suffering,

  231. how we can rejoice in you,

  232. and ultimately that we would understand

  233. your love for us

  234. and that we would respond to it.

  235. We ask these things

  236. not because we have earned them from you

  237. or we deserve them,

  238. but because Jesus has earned them

  239. and he deserves them.

  240. And so we ask them in his name.

  241. Amen.

  242. Some of you know,

  243. I recently purchased a home

  244. really close to this church.

  245. And of course I'm going through,

  246. the house is about as old

  247. as this church is,

  248. almost 25 years.

  249. And so there's all kinds

  250. of deferred maintenance

  251. and things going on.

  252. And I've inherited a sprinkler system,

  253. which I've never owned before.

  254. And I went out one day

  255. and I noticed that I was doing

  256. an excellent job of watering

  257. the sidewalk and the street.

  258. And so I asked my neighbor,

  259. I said,

  260. is that my sprinkler head

  261. or your sprinkler head?

  262. And she said,

  263. oh, that's absolutely

  264. your sprinkler head.

  265. So I turned off all the water

  266. of those sprinklers

  267. and I turned down the system

  268. and I went out

  269. and I bought one of those sprinklers

  270. that you hook up to a hose,

  271. you know,

  272. the ch-ch-ch-ch-ch-ch.

  273. So I'm out there in my front yard,

  274. I'm setting up the sprinkler

  275. and I'm trying to figure out

  276. the right angle to get

  277. so that I'm watering

  278. as much grass as I can

  279. and as little sidewalk as I can.

  280. And of course,

  281. I don't know what I'm doing,

  282. so I'm just running around

  283. trying all these different angles

  284. and I'm imagining

  285. it's kind of like high noon,

  286. you know,

  287. all the windows are flipping open

  288. around the neighborhood

  289. so that everyone can watch this kid

  290. who doesn't know what he's doing.

  291. And my neighbor Dan comes out

  292. and Dan's helping me.

  293. He says,

  294. you know,

  295. I'm sure, Matthew,

  296. you know all these things.

  297. I said,

  298. Dan,

  299. I don't.

  300. So you just tell me

  301. whatever wisdom you have.

  302. So he helps me position

  303. the sprinkler in the right place

  304. and we figure it out

  305. and probably the whole neighborhood

  306. is still watching.

  307. And as Dan and I finish,

  308. Dan says,

  309. Matthew,

  310. I just,

  311. one final question.

  312. Do you like,

  313. do you like football?

  314. Do you watch football?

  315. Is that something you follow?

  316. Dan,

  317. not,

  318. I mean,

  319. not really,

  320. not really a sports guy.

  321. I don't,

  322. I don't really follow football

  323. and I'm feeling bad,

  324. right?

  325. Because he's kind of asking me

  326. if I want to be his friend.

  327. And so Dan says,

  328. well,

  329. you know,

  330. we like to watch the Broncos

  331. and we're not,

  332. we're not super into it

  333. but what we really like to do

  334. on a Sunday

  335. is we,

  336. we like to make some wings

  337. and we like to make various dips

  338. and put them out

  339. and we just like to sit

  340. and eat those things

  341. and watch football.

  342. And I said,

  343. Dan,

  344. I love football.

  345. It is actually

  346. my favorite sport.

  347. Dan said,

  348. that's great.

  349. Sue and I will have you

  350. over sometime.

  351. The point is this.

  352. Some people are just there

  353. for the snacks,

  354. right?

  355. I'm just there

  356. for the snacks.

  357. If you invite me over

  358. to watch the Super Bowl,

  359. yeah,

  360. I'm really about it.

  361. I'm really concerned

  362. about which team wins.

  363. I won't be there

  364. to watch the game

  365. but I'm really concerned

  366. about which team wins.

  367. Because I'm just there

  368. for the snacks.

  369. And if you're there

  370. for the snacks,

  371. when the snacks disappear,

  372. so will you.

  373. In the church,

  374. the same is true.

  375. Some people are just there

  376. for the snacks.

  377. People come to church

  378. for all sorts of reasons.

  379. Some people come to church

  380. because they know

  381. it's a wonderful place

  382. to find community

  383. and fellowship

  384. and friendship.

  385. Maybe they feel isolated

  386. and they think

  387. this is going to be

  388. the place

  389. where I'm going

  390. to get connected.

  391. Some people come

  392. to the church thinking

  393. this will be the wonderful

  394. place for me

  395. to find a spouse.

  396. Some people come

  397. to the church thinking

  398. I'm a good conservative person,

  399. whatever that means,

  400. and I think people in church

  401. are good conservative people.

  402. They care about

  403. the same family values

  404. that I do

  405. so I want to hang out

  406. with those types of people.

  407. And then there are

  408. other people who think

  409. those people in the church,

  410. they're good liberal people.

  411. They care about the poor

  412. in the way that I care

  413. about the poor

  414. and I want to go hang out

  415. with them

  416. and I want to be

  417. with those kinds of people.

  418. And then there are people

  419. who come to the church

  420. and they're in the church

  421. because this is what

  422. they've always done

  423. and this is their tradition.

  424. This is how

  425. they've always operated,

  426. this is how they're going

  427. to continue to operate

  428. and they just come to church

  429. because they come to church.

  430. But for whatever reason,

  431. they're there,

  432. they're there for the snacks.

  433. Now some of those things

  434. aren't necessarily bad,

  435. it's not wrong

  436. to come to church

  437. for community, right?

  438. That's part of what we believe,

  439. that we're the body of Christ

  440. and we're here to support each other

  441. and love each other.

  442. Not necessarily a bad reason

  443. to come

  444. because you've always done it.

  445. Hopefully you're doing it

  446. for more than that.

  447. But we as a church,

  448. we are not here

  449. for the snacks.

  450. We are here

  451. because we live

  452. in a world

  453. that's filled with evil

  454. because of our sin

  455. and God has offered us

  456. a way of redemption

  457. through the judgment

  458. of his son

  459. who he poured out

  460. the judgment

  461. that we deserved

  462. so that we could

  463. experience salvation

  464. and he's called us

  465. to be a people

  466. who witnesses that

  467. to the world.

  468. That is why

  469. we are here.

  470. And I am not here

  471. for the snacks.

  472. I did not move

  473. from the East Coast

  474. because I get really jazzed

  475. about paying off mortgages

  476. or because I get really jazzed

  477. about what type of coffee

  478. we have.

  479. That is too small

  480. a thing.

  481. Now those things

  482. aren't bad things,

  483. they're not wrong things,

  484. right?

  485. But I'm here

  486. because God longs

  487. for his people

  488. to know his word

  489. and because God

  490. has called a people

  491. to himself

  492. and he's given them

  493. a mission.

  494. He has commanded us

  495. to be a light

  496. to the nation

  497. so that when people

  498. look around

  499. they could see

  500. what it is

  501. that happens

  502. when God's people

  503. walk in God's ways

  504. and he's given us

  505. a mission

  506. that we would go

  507. and make disciples

  508. of all nations

  509. baptizing them

  510. in the name

  511. of the Father

  512. and the Son

  513. and the Holy Spirit

  514. teaching them

  515. everything that Jesus

  516. commanded

  517. and that we would

  518. live out

  519. what Jesus called

  520. so that we would

  521. be in a world

  522. that's filled

  523. with God's love

  524. and his mercy

  525. and his goodness

  526. and his justice.

  527. We are not here

  528. for the snacks.

  529. We are here

  530. because God

  531. is calling a people

  532. to himself

  533. redeemed

  534. through the blood

  535. of his Son

  536. who suffered

  537. in our place.

  538. You might be wondering

  539. what does any of that

  540. have to do

  541. with joy

  542. in suffering?

  543. People come to church

  544. and are part of the community

  545. for many reasons.

  546. Sometimes it's for God

  547. and his mission

  548. and sometimes it's not.

  549. Peter writes to encourage

  550. these people

  551. in verses 6 and 7

  552. In other words

  553. when you suffer

  554. for the name

  555. of Jesus Christ

  556. it demonstrates

  557. and shows

  558. to you

  559. and to the world

  560. that you are not here

  561. for the snacks

  562. because the snacks

  563. have disappeared.

  564. There is nothing

  565. comfortable

  566. or convenient

  567. about being a Christian

  568. for the recipients

  569. of this letter

  570. in modern day Turkey

  571. in the first century.

  572. They are facing

  573. many trials

  574. and yet

  575. they have remained

  576. faithful

  577. to God.

  578. He is telling them

  579. your faith

  580. it is genuine

  581. and tested.

  582. It has been proven

  583. to be real faith.

  584. Verse 7

  585. You can now know

  586. more than you've

  587. ever known before

  588. how much

  589. God is your Father

  590. and you belong to Him.

  591. This is the proof

  592. in the pudding

  593. of your faith.

  594. If you had any doubts

  595. about it before

  596. you can now know

  597. how much

  598. you belong to God.

  599. How much

  600. as we saw last week

  601. that His power

  602. is working through

  603. your faith.

  604. So why is it

  605. that these people

  606. find joy

  607. in their sufferings?

  608. It's because

  609. Peter is telling them

  610. you are suffering

  611. because God

  612. is your Father

  613. and you can now

  614. know more

  615. than you did before

  616. how much

  617. you belong to Him.

  618. You can now

  619. know with more

  620. confidence

  621. than you had

  622. in the past

  623. that you

  624. belong to God.

  625. And so even

  626. as you face

  627. trials and sufferings

  628. you can find joy

  629. because it shows

  630. how much

  631. and how secure

  632. your faith is.

  633. Not that it rests

  634. on your faith

  635. but this confirms

  636. your faith.

  637. It shows to you

  638. and everyone else.

  639. It shows to the world

  640. that you're not here

  641. you're not a Christian

  642. you're not in the church

  643. because of the things

  644. that you can get

  645. or gain

  646. but you're here

  647. because of Jesus.

  648. And so that's

  649. what fills

  650. Peter with joy

  651. and it's what fills

  652. these people

  653. with joy

  654. as well.

  655. They can have confidence

  656. that they belong

  657. to God

  658. more confidence

  659. than they've had

  660. in the past.

  661. He tells them

  662. that there

  663. he gives his own

  664. illustration here

  665. in verse 7

  666. so that the tested

  667. genuineness of your faith

  668. more precious than gold

  669. that perishes

  670. though it is tested

  671. by fire.

  672. He's using an image

  673. here of gold.

  674. Gold is something

  675. you're being tested

  676. right?

  677. You're facing

  678. opposition

  679. for your faith.

  680. Gold is also tested.

  681. Gold is really valuable.

  682. Guess what?

  683. Your faith

  684. is even more valuable.

  685. Gold

  686. can be tested

  687. tested by fire

  688. but gold

  689. can also be destroyed

  690. by fire

  691. as well.

  692. Think about

  693. Frodo's ring

  694. for example.

  695. On the one hand

  696. incredibly resilient

  697. on the other hand

  698. it can be destroyed.

  699. Your faith

  700. cannot

  701. be destroyed.

  702. You think about

  703. gold being tested?

  704. How much more

  705. does this show

  706. the value

  707. of your faith?

  708. How much

  709. more hope

  710. and confidence

  711. and trust

  712. can you have

  713. since your faith

  714. is even more

  715. resilient

  716. and valuable

  717. than gold?

  718. Even gold

  719. that perishes

  720. your faith

  721. will not.

  722. Instead

  723. your faith

  724. is going to be

  725. found to result

  726. in praise

  727. and glory

  728. and honor

  729. at the revelation

  730. of Jesus Christ.

  731. And this image

  732. here is probably

  733. something like

  734. you've been separated

  735. from someone

  736. for a long time

  737. and both of you

  738. have been on adventures

  739. doing things

  740. and you come together

  741. and you're able

  742. to share

  743. and praise each other

  744. for the things

  745. that you've done well.

  746. There's a sense

  747. in which we hear

  748. in Matthew 25

  749. that God's going

  750. to tell those

  751. who are faithful

  752. to him

  753. well done

  754. good and faithful servant.

  755. That's the language

  756. of verse 7 here.

  757. It may be found

  758. to result in

  759. praise and glory

  760. and honor

  761. in other words

  762. found to result

  763. in God saying

  764. to you

  765. well done

  766. good and faithful servant.

  767. when?

  768. At the coming

  769. at the revelation

  770. of Jesus Christ

  771. in other words

  772. at Jesus'

  773. second coming.

  774. These people

  775. can find joy

  776. in suffering

  777. because it's suffering

  778. that proves

  779. that they belong

  780. to God

  781. and it's suffering

  782. that proves

  783. that their faith

  784. in God

  785. is real.

  786. It doesn't make

  787. their faith real.

  788. We don't need

  789. to be seeking

  790. out suffering.

  791. We don't need

  792. to try to

  793. find persecution

  794. but when we face it

  795. God uses it

  796. to confirm

  797. that we belong

  798. to him.

  799. He uses it

  800. to assure us

  801. and reassure us

  802. that we are his

  803. and so that's why

  804. these people

  805. in this letter

  806. are able to find

  807. joy in their suffering.

  808. Peter by the way

  809. found the same kind

  810. of joy in his suffering.

  811. We're told a story

  812. in Acts chapter 5.

    Acts 5 chapter mention

  813. Peter after Jesus

  814. has left

  815. he's going around

  816. and preaching

  817. and teaching

  818. he's in Jerusalem

  819. healing people

  820. and the high priests

  821. arrest him

  822. because they're not

  823. thrilled with him

  824. going and telling

  825. people about Jesus

  826. and healing in his name

  827. and if you know

  828. the story

  829. Peter gets out

  830. of prison

  831. there's an angel

  832. who lets them out

  833. and they find him

  834. again and they beat him.

  835. This is in Acts chapter 5

    Acts 5 chapter mention

  836. and after they beat Peter

  837. do you remember

  838. what he does

  839. and what they do

  840. when they leave?

  841. Peter and his friends

  842. leave rejoicing.

  843. Peter and his friends

  844. because they were

  845. counted worthy

  846. to suffer

  847. for the name

  848. of Jesus Christ.

  849. And so as I've been

  850. emphasizing in the other

  851. portions of Peter

  852. Peter writes here

  853. to people about

  854. what he has

  855. personally experienced

  856. and knows.

  857. Peter knows

  858. what it's like

  859. to find joy

  860. in suffering.

  861. He knows

  862. what it's like

  863. to understand

  864. and see

  865. how real

  866. his faith is

  867. to have it

  868. confirmed to him

  869. because of what he faces

  870. for the name

  871. of Jesus.

  872. And so sufferings

  873. in the present

  874. bring joy

  875. because they confirm

  876. everything that we've seen

  877. in the previous verses.

  878. They confirm

  879. what we have

  880. in the future.

  881. That the glory

  882. of the future

  883. belongs to us.

  884. Praise and glory

  885. and honor

  886. at the revelation

  887. of Jesus Christ

  888. verse 7.

  889. And so what Peter

  890. has to tell us here

  891. it's not

  892. there's nothing

  893. really complicated

  894. about it

  895. or sophisticated

  896. about it.

  897. It's really

  898. that simple.

  899. You're going to

  900. suffer in this world.

  901. You're going to suffer

  902. because you've been

  903. chosen by God

  904. and because you've

  905. been chosen by God

  906. you're in exile.

  907. You're going to be

  908. out of place

  909. in this world

  910. and its customs

  911. and its ways

  912. and its traditions

  913. and its beliefs.

  914. And that's going

  915. to lead to trials.

  916. When you face

  917. those trials

  918. you're going to stand

  919. and continue

  920. to face them.

  921. You're not going

  922. to leave

  923. because you weren't

  924. there for the snacks.

  925. You were there

  926. for Jesus.

  927. And as you walk

  928. through them

  929. it's going to confirm

  930. your hope

  931. and your trust

  932. and your faith

  933. in him

  934. and you're going

  935. to find joy

  936. because you're

  937. going to know

  938. more than ever

  939. before how much

  940. he's your father

  941. and how much

  942. you belong to him.

  943. And then Peter

  944. piles on another

  945. piece of encouragement.

  946. Remember Peter's

  947. encouraging and instructing

  948. and his goal

  949. here at the beginning

  950. is just to lay

  951. on encouragement

  952. for these people

  953. who are facing

  954. suffering for Jesus.

  955. Verse 8

  956. Though you have not

  957. seen him

  958. you love him.

  959. Though you do not

  960. now see him

  961. you believe in him

  962. and rejoice with joy

  963. that is inexpressible

  964. and filled with glory

  965. obtaining the outcome

  966. of your faith

  967. the salvation

  968. of your souls.

  969. And as Peter's

  970. writing this

  971. of course he's aware

  972. of the story

  973. of Thomas.

  974. You remember

  975. at the very end

  976. of the Gospel of John

  977. we have Thomas

  978. who's a follower

  979. of Jesus

  980. and he hears

  981. the word

  982. that Jesus

  983. has risen

  984. from the dead

  985. and he doesn't

  986. want to believe it.

  987. And I'm going to

  988. read it to you

  989. just a little bit

  990. from John

    John 20:24

  991. chapter 20

  992. verse 24

  993. it says

  994. Now Thomas

  995. one of the twelve

  996. was not with them

  997. when Jesus came

  998. so the other disciples

  999. told him

1000. we have seen the Lord

1001. but he said to them

1002. unless I see in his hands

1003. the mark of the nails

  1004. and place my finger

1005. into the mark of the nails

  1006. and place my hand

  1007. into his side

  1008. I will never believe.

  1009. Eight days later

  1010. his disciples

  1011. were inside again

1012. and Thomas was with them

  1013. although the doors

  1014. were locked

  1015. Jesus came

  1016. and stood among them

  1017. and said

  1018. peace be with you.

1019. Then he said to Thomas

  1020. put your finger here

  1021. and see my hands

1022. and put out your hand

1023. and place it in my side

  1024. do not disbelieve

  1025. but believe.

  1026. Thomas answered him

1027. my Lord and my God

1028. and Jesus said to him

  1029. have you believed

1030. because you have seen me?

  1031. Blessed are those

  1032. who have not seen

  1033. and yet have believed.

  1034. Blessed are those

  1035. who have not seen

  1036. and yet have believed.

  1037. Peter knows

  1038. that unlike him

  1039. who walked with Jesus

  1040. and lived with Jesus

  1041. these people did not.

  1042. and yet their faithfulness

  1043. in suffering

  1044. proves that even though

  1045. they haven't seen Jesus

  1046. they love him.

  1047. The same faith

  1048. that's proved

  1049. by their suffering

  1050. is the faith

  1051. that they experience.

  1052. You believe in him

  1053. that's a faith word

  1054. and you rejoice

  1055. with joy

  1056. that is inexpressible

  1057. and filled with glory

  1058. obtaining the outcome

  1059. of your faith

  1060. the salvation

  1061. of your souls.

  1062. In other words

  1063. these people have joy

  1064. not just because

  1065. their faith is confirmed

  1066. but because of

  1067. what it confirms.

1068. Not just that it confirms

1069. that they belong to Jesus

1070. but everything that comes to them

  1071. the inheritance

  1072. that we talked about

  1073. last week

1074. that it's looking to that

  1075. in the future

  1076. as it's confirmed

  1077. in the present

  1078. that allows them

  1079. to rejoice

  1080. in their sufferings

  1081. rejoicing for their sufferings

  1082. for the name

  1083. of Jesus Christ.

1084. If you follow the news

  1085. you know there was

1086. an article that came out

  1087. in May

  1088. of this year

  1089. about a man named

  1090. Jordan Hubber

  1091. and

  1092. Jordan

  1093. did not know

  1094. who his father was

  1095. but he knew

  1096. an English aristocrat

  1097. who he suspected

  1098. was his father

  1099. and he tried

  1100. to prove this

  1101. for a long time

  1102. unsuccessfully

  1103. until this man died

  1104. and he decided

1105. he was going to be able

1106. to do a DNA test.

1107. Now Jordan was working class

  1108. he was struggling

  1109. to make things work

  1110. from week to week

  1111. financially

  1112. he wasn't doing well

1113. and this was his last shot

1114. to be able to do

  1115. this DNA test

  1116. to figure out

  1117. whether or not

  1118. this man

  1119. who had just died

  1120. was his father

  1121. and it came back

  1122. and there was

  1123. 100% positive proof

  1124. that this man

  1125. he believed

  1126. was his father

  1127. and so Jordan

  1128. got to move in

  1129. to this 1500 acre

  1130. estate in London

  1131. which was worth

  1132. over 50 million pounds

  1133. and then on top

  1134. of that

  1135. received an allowance

  1136. of I believe

  1137. 1000 pounds a week.

  1138. Jordan

  1139. because this man

  1140. was his father

  1141. received the full

  1142. inheritance

1143. and it was the DNA

  1144. test that he went

  1145. through that proved

1146. that he was the son

  1147. who belonged

  1148. to this man.

  1149. Brothers and sisters

  1150. Peter is telling us

  1151. that when we suffer

  1152. for the name

  1153. of Jesus Christ

1154. it is the DNA test

  1155. that proves

  1156. definitively

  1157. that we belong

  1158. to God

  1159. and so we rejoice

  1160. first

  1161. that we belong

  1162. to him

  1163. and then second

  1164. because that's true

  1165. the full

  1166. inheritance

  1167. is ours

  1168. and so that's why

  1169. we find joy

  1170. in our suffering

  1171. for the name

  1172. of Christ

  1173. because we experience

  1174. that salvation

  1175. now in part

  1176. and we will experience

  1177. it in full

  1178. verse 8

  1179. though you have not

  1180. seen him

  1181. you love him

  1182. though you do not

  1183. now see him

  1184. you believe in him

  1185. and rejoice

  1186. with joy

  1187. that is inexpressible

  1188. and filled with glory

  1189. obtaining the outcome

  1190. of your faith

  1191. the salvation

  1192. of your souls

  1193. please pray with me

  1194. Father in heaven

  1195. we thank you

  1196. that you've chosen us

1197. and we belong to you

  1198. we thank you

  1199. that you have

  1200. a mission

  1201. for your church

  1202. and you want us

1203. to be a part of it

  1204. and we confess

  1205. that that mission

  1206. involves trials

  1207. in this life

  1208. for your name

  1209. and we thank you

  1210. that you use that

  1211. to bring us joy

  1212. we ask that that

  1213. would become more

  1214. and more real

  1215. in our lives

  1216. that as we face

  1217. opposition

  1218. because of our faith

  1219. in you

1220. that it would cause us

  1221. to rejoice

  1222. knowing even more

  1223. how much we belong

  1224. to you

  1225. and looking forward

  1226. to the inheritance

  1227. that is ours

  1228. we ask these things

  1229. not because

  1230. we have earned them

  1231. but because Jesus

  1232. is our older brother

  1233. and it's his inheritance

  1234. that comes to us

1235. and so we ask it

  1236. in his name

  1237. amen
