  1. Good morning. My name is Matthew Capone and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church

  2. and it's my joy to bring God's Word to you today.

  3. If you are new or visiting with us, welcome.

  4. We're glad that you're here.

  5. And we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats,

  6. but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  7. And as we follow Jesus together, we're convinced that there's no one so good,

  8. that they don't need God's grace, and no one so bad that they can't have it.

  9. And that's the reason that we come back week after week

  10. and we spend a large part of our worship service looking at what God has to say in His Word.

  11. We believe that God has something to say to everyone.

  12. If you've been with us, you know that we are in the book of 1 Peter.

  13. And the book of 1 Peter is actually a letter.

  14. It's a letter written by a man named Peter.

  15. And he writes it to Christians who are living in the first century in what is now modern-day Turkey.

  16. And he writes to these Christians to encourage them and instruct them.

  17. And he does that because they are facing opposition in the world

  18. because they're living lives that reflect Jesus Christ.

  19. And they're also feeling out of place in the world

  20. because they're living lives as Christians.

  21. Peter writes to encourage them that Jesus is worth it.

  22. Jesus is worth them living for and loving for.

  23. He's worth them suffering for and dying for.

  24. And he also writes not just to encourage them but to instruct them

  25. that they would know how they should live in the world as Christians

  26. and that they would know how to respond when living as Christians leads to opposition from the world.

  27. Last week, he gave them something of a mission statement.

  28. He told them that they were priests among the nations.

  29. And we talked about what that means.

  30. Essentially, it means that these are people who are meant to represent God to the world

  31. and represent the world to God.

  32. That people would know about God and his goodness

  33. because of the way that his people live.

  34. Now, Peter, in doing that, was just laying the groundwork,

  35. the framework for what's to come in this letter

  36. because now he's going to tell us specifically how we can act as priests.

  37. How can we live in a way that would bring honor and glory to Jesus Christ?

  38. And how can we live in a way that would reflect what's true about God to the world

  39. and bring other people to know him?

  40. In fact, that's how we left off last week in verse 12.

  41. Peter says,

  42. So the goal is that the people receiving this letter, by their actions, would bring glory to God.

  43. This week, Peter's going to get practical.

  44. We're going to look at how Christians bring glory to God

  45. in the way that they interact with the government that's been given to them.

  46. And so it's with that question about government that we're going to turn to 1 Peter 2.

  47. We're in verse 13.

  48. You can open up your Bibles to that.

  49. You can open it up on your phone or you can follow along.

  50. It's near the end of your worship guide.

  51. Remember as we come to this passage that this is God's word.

  52. And God tells us that while grass withers and flowers fall,

  53. his word will remain forever.

  54. And so that's why we read now beginning at verse 13.

  55. Be subject for the Lord's sake to every human institution.

  56. Whether it be to the emperor as supreme or to governors as sent by him to punish those who do evil

  57. and to praise those who do good.

  58. For this is the will of God,

  59. that by doing good you should put to silence the ignorance of foolish people.

  60. Verse 16.

  61. Live as people who are free,

  62. not using your freedom as a cover-up for evil,

  63. but living as servants of God.

  64. Honor everyone.

  65. Love the brotherhood.

  66. Fear God.

  67. Honor the emperor.

  68. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  69. Father in heaven, we thank you again that you've given us another week to live

  70. and you've also given us another Sunday to hear from you with your people.

  71. We ask that you would send your Holy Spirit because we confess that we need help.

  72. Without your help, we will not be able to hear from you or understand what you had to say to us.

  73. And so we ask that you would do for us what we cannot do for ourselves.

  74. That you would speak clearly.

  75. That we would understand and believe and act.

  76. We ask all these things not because we have earned them,

  77. but because Jesus has earned them for us.

  78. And so we ask them in his name.

  79. Amen.

  80. If you've been following the news recently,

  81. you know there's been a very controversial story

  82. about the relationship of the United States to the United Kingdom.

  83. And it all started at the end of August

  84. when there was this woman, an American citizen named Ann Sackalas,

  85. and she ended up having a tragic accident in her car with a motorcyclist

  86. who was a citizen of the United Kingdom.

  87. And that man named Harry Dunn ended up passing away pretty quickly after the accident.

  88. And there are, of course, all kinds of motor vehicle accidents all around the world,

  89. all the time, that we don't hear about.

  90. But this one made the news because Ann Sackalas' husband works for the U.S. government.

  91. And so instead of staying in the country to see this case prosecuted,

  92. she fled and returned to the U.S.

  93. and she made a claim that she does not have to face any consequences

  94. because of something called diplomatic immunity.

  95. Now, if you're familiar with diplomatic immunity,

  96. you know that it's a way of protecting foreign diplomats

  97. when they're in other countries.

  98. So if you're representing the United States, say in France,

  99. the government can't harass you as a representative of another government.

  100. And it's to avoid all kinds of conflicts of interest.

  101. But there's been a controversy now over whether this is,

  102. first of all, an appropriate use of diplomatic immunity,

  103. and second of all, whether it even applies to Ann.

  104. There's some controversy since her husband apparently was not stated

  105. to be an official diplomat.

  106. He was working for the U.S. government,

  107. but whether he's a diplomat or not is controversial.

  108. Now, in that situation, no one was trying to use diplomatic immunity

  109. to get away with doing wrong, right?

  110. This was an accident.

  111. Ann Sackalas didn't think,

  112. I'm going to collide into this motorcycle

  113. and I'm going to get away with it.

  114. However, there are people who do abuse diplomatic immunity.

  115. I had a classmate in college.

  116. He thought very highly of himself.

  117. And his parents were both very high-level political operatives

  118. in Washington, D.C.

  119. And he went to a very elite private school in the city.

  120. And he had a classmate

  121. who was the son of a foreign diplomat.

  122. And so he would tell us stories

  123. about when they wanted to have parties,

  124. they would throw them at this individual's house.

  125. And so there'd be all kinds of illicit and illegal things

  126. going on at these high school parties

  127. and the police would show up

  128. and this classmate of mine,

  129. he would tell stories about how he would walk out of the house

  130. and he'd come up and approach the police.

  131. And they would ask him,

  132. what's going on at that house?

  133. And he would say, you know what?

  134. That's the house of the ambassador.

  135. It doesn't really matter what's going on in this house.

  136. And as frustrated as they would be,

  137. the police in that situation had to accept that answer

  138. because they had no authority

  139. to go into the home of a foreign diplomat

  140. and start arresting people.

  141. That man was covered by diplomatic immunity.

  142. Now I mention that in 1 Peter

  143. because Peter has just told these people

  144. in our passage from last week, verse 9,

  145. that they are a chosen race and a holy nation.

  146. They're their own group of people.

  147. And it would be tempting for them hearing that

  148. to think, that sounds amazing.

  149. We're our own nation.

  150. I mean, God has given us these rules that apply to us.

  151. We don't have to worry about

  152. what the government has to say about anything.

  153. We're just going to follow God's laws.

  154. And if the government requires us of something

  155. that God doesn't require of us,

  156. well, we don't have to worry about that.

  157. We're Christians.

  158. We're a holy nation.

  159. Peter comes making sure at the very beginning

  160. that there is no possibility for these people

  161. to have that misunderstanding.

  162. There is, in other words,

  163. no diplomatic immunity for Christians.

  164. Just because we belong to God

  165. and have been chosen by God

  166. does not mean that we get to disregard

  167. the authorities that he's put over us.

  168. And so he tells us, verse 13,

  169. be subject for the Lord's sake

  170. to every human institution,

  171. whether it be to the emperor as supreme

  172. or to governors as sent by him.

  173. They have a purpose.

  174. They're punishing those who do evil

  175. and praising those who do good.

  176. Even more than that,

  177. so they're not just people

  178. who are keeping the law.

  179. Verse 15, this is the will of God.

  180. By the way, people spend enormous amounts of time

  181. trying to discover God's will for their life.

  182. And you have the great fortune

  183. of being here this morning

  184. and getting to skip all of that.

  185. Because this passage is going to tell you

  186. very clearly what God's will for your life is.

  187. This is it.

  188. You don't need to search anymore.

  189. This is the will of God.

  190. That by doing good,

  191. you should put to silence

  192. the ignorance of foolish people.

  193. In other words,

  194. Christians are not just people who obey the law.

  195. We're not just people who pay our taxes.

  196. We're not just people who respect police officers.

  197. We're not just people

  198. who try to obey and follow the laws

  199. that have been given to us.

  200. We're not just people who follow the rules of the road.

  201. We're also people who are seeking to do good.

  202. And so Christians are also serving their community.

  203. They're also caring for the poor.

  204. They're also actively promoting good

  205. in their communities,

  206. in their neighborhoods,

  207. in their cities.

  208. Not only do Christians not have diplomatic immunity,

  209. not only are there people who are obeying the law,

  210. even more than that,

  211. like we talked about last week,

  212. there are people who are promoting good.

  213. They're not just seeking to do

  214. the very minimum necessary

  215. to get by in their society,

  216. but they're actually looking for ways

  217. where they can promote God's goodness

  218. and his justice in the world.

  219. As Peter's writing to these people,

  220. then he's encouraging them

  221. that that's how they respond

  222. when they face opposition.

  223. When we face opposition from this world,

  224. we don't respond by saying,

  225. well, we don't care anymore.

  226. We don't care about your rules.

  227. We don't care about your government.

  228. But instead, they double down on doing good

  229. and living as citizens

  230. who are models to the world

  231. and are a pleasure for their governors

  232. and their emperors.

  233. Now, we don't have emperors

  234. in the United States, right?

  235. This was written to first century

  236. people in the Roman Empire,

  237. but we still have a government.

  238. We still have government officials,

  239. people who make laws and rules,

  240. and as much as we're able,

  241. as Christians, we obey those things.

  242. Now, there's other parts in the Bible

  243. that talk about this.

  244. There's times, right,

  245. when the government's going to ask us

  246. to do something that God says is a sin,

  247. and Peter's not talking about that.

  248. We see that in Romans chapter 5.

    Romans 5 chapter mention

  249. The people in Romans are told,

  250. or not Romans, Acts chapter 5.

    Acts 5 chapter mention

  251. The disciples are told in Acts chapter 5

    Acts 5 chapter mention

  252. to stop preaching the gospel,

  253. and they say,

  254. well, we can't do that.

  255. God's commanded us to preach the gospel.

  256. That's not a rule we can obey.

  257. But that's not what Peter's talking about here.

  258. He's talking about the basic rules

  259. in the world

  260. that help society to function.

  261. So one question is this.

  262. If we, I mentioned last week,

  263. a church that's come under fire,

  264. not from the government,

  265. but just in their general culture and society

  266. because of some of their views

  267. about human sexuality,

  268. and that church is also doing

  269. what Peter talked about last week.

  270. They're doing good works.

  271. So people are on the one hand

  272. criticizing them.

  273. On the other hand,

  274. they can't help but notice

  275. the good that they're doing.

  276. Peter repeats that here.

  277. Verse 14,

  278. these governors are punishing the evil,

  279. and praising the good.

  280. If we came under fire

  281. here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church

  282. because of our views

  283. of agreeing with the Bible

  284. and what it teaches,

  285. would our governors be able

  286. to praise us for doing good?

  287. Would they be able to say,

  288. you know, we really wish

  289. that those folks would get in line with us

  290. and some of their beliefs,

  291. but we can't help but notice

  292. the blessing that they are

  293. to their community.

  294. And as much as we'd love

  295. for them to stop operating,

  296. we also understand

  297. the tremendous devastation

  298. that would happen

  299. if this church pulled out

  300. of our community.

  301. Can our governors praise us

  302. as people who do good?

  303. Even more than that,

  304. verse 15, he says,

  305. this is the will of God

  306. that doing good,

  307. you should put to silence

  308. the ignorance of foolish people.

  309. And I mentioned last week

  310. this church that's come under fire.

  311. By the way,

  312. there's a second church

  313. that I learned about this week

  314. that's a little closer to home.

  315. It's actually not a sister

  316. denomination of ours,

  317. but it's in our denomination

  318. that's come under a lot of fire

  319. for holding true

  320. to their biblical commitments.

  321. And so this is something

  322. that's coming closer

  323. and closer to home,

  324. and the question is,

  325. how do we respond

  326. and how are the people

  327. outside going to view us?

  328. Peter's telling them

  329. that those who are outside

  330. of the church

  331. should view the church

  332. as a place

  333. where people do good.

  334. And no matter what criticisms

  335. they have about our beliefs

  336. or our practices,

  337. they cannot argue

  338. with the benefit

  339. that the church is

  340. to the world

  341. because of the way

  342. that they are reflecting

  343. Jesus and his character

  344. as priests.

  345. Peter tells us

  346. that we have a reason

  347. for doing this too.

  348. Verse 13,

  349. it's for the Lord's sake.

  350. And then in verse 16,

  351. he tells us

  352. that we are servants of God.

  353. In other words,

  354. our primary purpose here

  355. is to represent God

  356. in the world,

  357. whatever we do

  358. that it would serve him.

  359. Our goal is to make

  360. Jesus famous

  361. by the way

  362. that we interact

  363. with government.

  364. And our goal is

  365. that Jesus would be famous

  366. because of the ways

  367. that we serve

  368. the community around us.

  369. And so what would we do?

  370. Let's just think about it

  371. for a second.

  372. Thought experiment.

  373. There was a politician

  374. recently

  375. who suggested

  376. that churches

  377. that hold faithful

  378. to certain biblical

  379. commitments about sexuality

  380. should have their

  381. tax-exempt status removed.

  382. What would we do

  383. if our tax-exempt status

  384. was removed?

  385. By the way,

  386. if it was,

  387. we'd still be more privileged

  388. than most Christians

  389. in the history of the world.

  390. But what we would do

  391. is we would be

  392. 1 Peter kind of people.

  393. We would recognize

  394. 1 Peter 1,

    1 Peter 1:1

  395. verse 1,

  396. that we are elect

  397. and exiles.

  398. We've been chosen

  399. by God,

  400. but we're exiles

  401. in the world.

  402. We would know

  403. that our hope

  404. is not in this world,

  405. but we have a king

  406. who's coming back

  407. for us.

  408. We have a salvation.

  409. This is chapter 1,

    Isaiah 1 chapter mention

  410. still ready to be revealed

  411. in the last time.

  412. And we can rejoice

  413. in our trials

  414. because we know

  415. that it's confirming

  416. that we belong

  417. to Jesus Christ.

  418. And then,

  419. still in chapter 1,

  420. we can prepare

  421. our minds for action

  422. and set our hope

  423. on what it is

  424. that really matters,

  425. the kingdom of God.

  426. We can remember

  427. that Jesus is the one

  428. who was foreknown

  429. before the foundation

  430. of the world

  431. but was made manifest

  432. for us.

  433. That's chapter 1,

  434. verse 20.

  435. And then,

  436. what else would we do?

  437. Well, chapter 2,

  438. we'd put away malice

  439. and deceit

  440. and hypocrisy.

  441. And we'd continue

  442. to this section

  443. realizing,

  444. as we saw earlier

  445. about the stone,

  446. that there are people

  447. who are going to stumble

  448. on the stone.

  449. And then,

  450. we would give praise

  451. and honor

  452. and glory to God.

  453. And we would continue

  454. serving Him,

  455. submitting to the authorities

  456. in the world,

  457. and also,

  458. the mission statement

  459. that we saw last week,

  460. proclaiming the excellences,

  461. this is verse 9,

  462. proclaiming the excellencies

  463. of Him who called you

  464. out of darkness

  465. into His marvelous light.

  466. In other words,

  467. if our tax-exempt status

  468. was removed,

  469. what would we do?

  470. We would praise God

  471. for the goodness

  472. of His grace,

  473. and we would continue

  474. doing good in the world

  475. for the sake of His name.

  476. How do we represent God

  477. as priests

  478. when it comes to our relationship

  479. with the government?

  480. We submit to them

  481. as much as we can,

  482. and we do it

  483. for the sake

  484. of Jesus Christ.

  485. We do it

  486. so that verse 12

  487. from last week

  488. would be true,

  489. that some might see

  490. your good deeds

  491. and glorify God

  492. on the day of visitation.

  493. Our goal,

  494. in other words,

  495. when it comes

  496. to government

  497. and our relationship

  498. with it,

  499. our number one goal

  500. is that God

  501. would be famous,

  502. that He would receive

  503. honor and glory

  504. and praise,

  505. because of the way

  506. that His people

  507. submit to the authorities

  508. that are over them.

  509. That is our number one goal,

  510. that God would be famous

  511. in the world.

  512. I had a,

  513. you all know,

  514. I was a teacher before,

  515. I've mentioned that

  516. a few times,

  517. and I,

  518. at one point,

  519. was teaching a high school

  520. Greek class,

  521. and I had a student

  522. who was in the class

  523. and also

  524. her family was at my church,

  525. this was back in Virginia,

  526. and at one point,

  527. her dad came up to me,

  528. and this was,

  529. you know,

  530. on a Sunday,

  531. and he said,

  532. you know,

  533. we've really been

  534. digging into the Greek

  535. and we've been studying

  536. Revelation chapter 4,

    Revelation 4 chapter mention

  537. and we've been looking

  538. at that section

  539. in Revelation chapter 4

    Revelation 4 chapter mention

  540. where the elders

  541. cast down their crowns

  542. before the throne of God.

  543. And you know,

  544. I was,

  545. I'm really trying

  546. to figure out,

  547. what's the possessive nature

  548. of the word there

  549. when it comes

  550. to the crowns?

  551. Because I want to see,

  552. do those crowns,

  553. do they help support

  554. the view

  555. that the Bible

  556. supports private property?

  557. Now,

  558. don't get me wrong,

  559. the Bible's in favor

  560. of private property.

  561. If you don't believe me,

  562. look in the book

  563. of Proverbs.

  564. The point

  565. of Revelation chapter 4

    Revelation 4 chapter mention

  566. is that people

  567. are so moved

  568. by God's honor

  569. and his glory

  570. and his majesty

  571. that private property

  572. has no place

  573. in their mind

  574. because they have

  575. no choice

  576. but to take their crown

  577. and give it to God.

  578. Our goal

  579. when we think

  580. about government

  581. not primarily

  582. is to figure out

  583. different philosophies

  584. and theories

  585. and ways of thinking

  586. about it.

  587. I'm not saying

  588. those things are bad,

  589. those are good,

  590. but our primary goal

  591. is to bring

  592. honor and glory

  593. to God.

  594. Our primary goal

  595. is that people

  596. would see

  597. and know Jesus

  598. because of the way

  599. we interact

  600. with government

  601. and the way

  602. we think about government.

  603. It's not wrong

  604. to ask questions

  605. about what the Bible

  606. teaches about private property.

  607. It's just that

  608. there's something

  609. so much more important

  610. and glorious

  611. than that.

  612. There is something

  613. better.

  614. And so it's not

  615. that we don't do

  616. those things

  617. or those things

  618. don't matter

  619. but what we do first.

  620. The first question

  621. we ask

  622. is how can I

  623. interact with the government

  624. in such a way

  625. that people

  626. would praise God?

  627. How can I interact

  628. with the government

  629. in such a way

  630. that people

  631. would praise God?

  632. Finally,

  633. Peter tells them

  634. that they're putting

  635. together,

  636. verse 15,

  637. not finally

  638. but in the middle

  639. that they're putting

  640. to silence

  641. the ignorance

  642. of foolish people.

  643. In other words,

  644. if people are going

  645. to speak ill about you,

  646. if they're going

  647. to speak poorly

  648. about you,

  649. let them speak

  650. poorly about you

  651. because you follow Jesus.

  652. Don't let them

  653. speak poorly

  654. about you

  655. for any other reason.

  656. Don't let them

  657. speak poorly

  658. about the way

  659. that you talk

  660. about politicians

  661. that you don't like.

  662. Don't let them

  663. speak poorly

  664. about you

  665. because you're someone

  666. who doesn't seem

  667. to care about

  668. your neighborhood

  669. or the community

  670. that you're in.

  671. Give them only one reason

  672. to speak poorly

  673. and give them

  674. every reason

  675. to speak well

  676. of Jesus.

  677. You're free

  678. in Christ.

  679. Verse 16,

  680. live as people

  681. who are free,

  682. free from the penalty

  683. of sin

  684. and the power

  685. of sin

  686. and so live

  687. in a way

  688. that brings honor

  689. and glory

  690. to the person

  691. who freed you

  692. from sin.

  693. Yes,

  694. you're free

  695. but you're a servant

  696. of God.

  697. Peter's really

  698. giving two

  699. main instructions

  700. here about

  701. how to live

  702. faithfully

  703. as priest

  704. in relationship

  705. to the government.

  706. Instruction one,

  707. obey the authorities

  708. that are over you

  709. and do good.

  710. And then he gives us

  711. another instruction

  712. here at the end,

  713. verse 17,

  714. one about honor.

  715. Honor everyone,

  716. love the brotherhood,

  717. fear God,

  718. honor the emperor.

  719. Remember,

  720. you're living

  721. in a world,

  722. recipients of 1 Peter

  723. and also Christians

  724. in America,

  725. where some people

  726. are not going to like

  727. what you believe

  728. or do.

  729. And how you respond

  730. to each and every

  731. one of them

  732. is with honor.

  733. We make Jesus famous,

  734. we make God famous

  735. and bring him honor

  736. and glory and praise

  737. when we treat

  738. every person

  739. with dignity,

  740. whether they agree

  741. with us politically

  742. or not.

  743. That's part of how

  744. we are priests

  745. to the nation.

  746. That's how we make

  747. God known

  748. to the world

  749. and represent

  750. the world

  751. to God.

  752. Christians bring shame

  753. to the name

  754. of Jesus Christ

  755. when we pick

  756. and choose

  757. which politicians

  758. we'll speak well of

  759. and which ones

  760. we won't.

  761. Now I'm not saying

  762. we can't disagree

  763. with someone.

  764. I'm not saying

  765. we can't criticize

  766. someone.

  767. But we speak

  768. about someone

  769. with honor

  770. and we honor

  771. their position

  772. even if we disagree

  773. with them.

  774. And we honor

  775. the people around us

  776. even if they have

  777. different convictions

  778. about all sorts

  779. of things

  780. in this world.

  781. And we do it

  782. not because we're

  783. doormats

  784. but because we want

  785. God to be honored.

  786. And so we want

  787. them to see

  788. that even as they

  789. walk away from him

  790. we see the image

  791. of God in them.

  792. I've been reading

  793. through this

  794. book that I've been

  795. loving called

  796. Evangelism as Exiles

  797. which is based on

  798. the book of 1 Peter

  799. and he says it

  800. much better than I am

  801. so I'm going to read you

  802. I will so I'm going to

  803. read you a short quote

  804. here talking about

  805. this idea of how

  806. we interact with

  807. the world.

  808. It's written by a man

  809. named Elliot Clark

  810. and he says the fact

  811. is ridiculing your

  812. opponents is the

  813. privilege of the

  814. powerful.

  815. But now as an

  816. excluded minority

  817. American Christians

  818. no longer have

  819. the upper hand.

  820. Maligning our

  821. cultural and

  822. religious adversaries

  823. is therefore no

  824. longer an effective

  825. strategy.

  826. The days of

  827. mocking atheists

  828. crash joking about

  829. homosexuals

  830. slurring Muslims

  831. and making

  832. derogatory remarks

  833. about political

  834. rivals need to

  835. end.

  836. They should have

  837. never existed

  838. but the church

  839. could get away

  840. with such impudence

  841. when we were the

  842. cultural majority.

  843. Not anymore.

  844. And of course

  845. what Elliot Clark

  846. is doing is

  847. not introducing

  848. something new

  849. but calling the

  850. church back to

  851. what 1 Peter wrote

  852. in the first century.

  853. that Christians

  854. would be known

  855. as people who

  856. submit to their

  857. authorities and

  858. obey the laws of

  859. the government

  860. they find themselves

  861. in.

  862. That they'd be

  863. people who would

  864. be doing good

  865. seeking the good

  866. of the community

  867. and the city

  868. and the world

  869. that they're in.

  870. And finally

  871. they'd be people

  872. who honor everyone.

  873. That we would

  874. surprise the world

  875. around us because

  876. unlike them we

  877. refuse to engage

  878. in that sort of

  879. behavior.

  880. But we disagree

  881. with people with

  882. tremendous respect

  883. and honor and so

  884. they have a sense

  885. of what God's

  886. love to them

  887. could look like.

  888. Finally Peter

  889. tells us that the

  890. way that we

  891. interact with God

  892. is different than

  893. the way we interact

  894. with everyone else.

  895. We honor

  896. everyone

  897. and we honor

  898. the emperor.

  899. We love the

  900. brotherhood by the

  901. way so we're

  902. committed, we're

  903. faithful to the

  904. church in a

  905. special way

  906. but we fear

  907. God.

  908. part of the

  909. way that we're

  910. able to honor

  911. everyone is

  912. because of our

  913. fear of God.

  914. We know that

  915. there's something

  916. more than this

  917. world.

  918. And so if we

  919. lose something in

  920. this world because

  921. of obeying our

  922. authorities

  923. that's a small

  924. loss compared to

  925. the future that

  926. God's prepared

  927. for us.

  928. And we also

  929. know that as we

  930. obey the

  931. authorities,

  932. God is the

  933. only one who

  934. can bring true

  935. and full and

  936. final justice.

  937. Matthew chapter

    Matthew 10:28

  938. 10 verse 28

  939. says this,

  940. And do not

  941. fear those who

  942. kill the body

  943. but cannot kill

  944. the soul.

  945. Rather fear him

  946. who can destroy

  947. both soul and

  948. body in hell.

  949. And of course

  950. that's talking

  951. about God,

  952. right?

  953. That God is the

  954. only one that we

  955. truly fear.

  956. God is the

  957. Lord.

  958. Because there's

  959. no government

  960. or power even

  961. as we submit

  962. to them that

  963. can destroy

  964. our souls.

  965. Peter's

  966. recipients are

  967. able to receive

  968. this and honor

  969. their authorities

  970. even when it's

  971. hard because they

  972. know everything

  973. that Peter has

  974. already told them.

  975. They've been

  976. chosen by God

  977. and they belong

  978. to God.

  979. They've been

  980. sprinkled by

  981. Jesus' blood.

  982. They're servants

  983. of God.

  984. They're not under

  985. the power of sin

  986. anymore and they're

  987. servants of God

  988. because of what

  989. Jesus has done

  990. for them.

  991. The sprinkling

  992. of Jesus' blood

  993. comes from

  994. Jesus' death

  995. on the cross

  996. when he suffered

  997. the penalty

  998. that we should

  999. have suffered

  1000. for our sins.

  1001. And he lived

  1002. the life that

  1003. we should have

  1004. lived and he

  1005. gave his

  1006. righteousness to

  1007. us and took

  1008. our sin upon

  1009. himself.

  1010. And so he's

  1011. given them not

  1012. just that forgiveness

  1013. but as we've

  1014. talked about a

  1015. true and full

  1016. inheritance that

  1017. they have to

  1018. look forward to

  1019. in the world to

  1020. come.

  1021. And so because

  1022. of that there's

  1023. nothing that they

  1024. can lose,

  1025. there's nothing

  1026. they can't afford

  1027. to lose to these

  1028. authorities as long

  1029. as they remain

  1030. faithful to God

  1031. because they have

  1032. everything that is

  1033. coming for them to

  1034. inherit in the

  1035. world to come.

  1036. And so that's how

  1037. they can be priests.

  1038. They're willing to

  1039. suffer.

  1040. They're willing to

  1041. love and live for

  1042. Jesus, representing

  1043. him to the world

  1044. even when it's

  1045. hard and

  1046. representing him

  1047. to the world by

  1048. the way that they

  1049. interact with

  1050. government.

  1051. How do we

  1052. represent God as

  1053. priests when it

  1054. comes to the

  1055. government of

  1056. Colorado Springs

  1057. and Colorado in

  1058. the United States?

  1059. We obey our

  1060. leaders as much as

  1061. possible unless they

  1062. tell us to sin.

  1063. do good so that

  1064. they would see

  1065. God's character

  1066. even as they

  1067. oppose God.

  1068. And we honor

  1069. them and treat

  1070. them with dignity

  1071. that they would

  1072. have one small

  1073. glimpse of God's

  1074. goodness and his

  1075. love.

  1076. And we do all

  1077. of it, verse 13,

  1078. for the Lord's

  1079. sake, verse 16,

  1080. because we're

  1081. servants of God,

  1082. and verse 17,

  1083. because we fear

  1084. God.

  1085. That's how we can

  1086. be priests,

  1087. bringing people who

  1088. don't know Jesus to

  1089. know him and bring

  1090. praise and honor and

  1091. glory to God.

  1092. That's what we're

1093. going to do in our

  1094. closing hymn in

  1095. which we're going to

  1096. sing, all hail the

  1097. power of Jesus' name.

1098. So I invite you to

  1099. pray with me.

  1100. Before we do that,

  1101. please pray with me.

  1102. Dear Father in

  1103. heaven, we thank you

1104. that you speak to us

  1105. clearly in your word.

  1106. Lord, we ask that

  1107. you would help us

  1108. to represent you

  1109. well in this world,

  1110. submitting to the

  1111. authorities you've

1112. given to us for the

  1113. sake of your name.

  1114. And we ask these

  1115. things in Jesus' name

  1116. because he has

  1117. earned them for us.

  1118. Amen.
