  1. So we go to the sermon text from Psalm 14.

  2. I forgot, I remember I forgot to introduce myself.

  3. I'm Chris Bradley.

  4. I'm one of the ruling elders here,

  5. and I'm here because the session has given Matthew the week off

  6. to prepare an Advent series, which starts next week.

  7. So we're taking a break from 1 Peter,

  8. and before our Advent series,

  9. we'll be in the Psalms again for one week,

  10. and it'll be Psalm 14.

  11. So if you open your worship guides or your Bible to Psalm 14,

  12. and if you have your Bible next to you,

  13. it would be good to turn forward to Romans 1 and 3,

  14. because we'll be there too, all right?

  15. As we do that, let's open the Word of God

  16. and hear what He has for us this morning from the Psalms.

  17. Psalm 14, starting in verse 1,

  18. to the choir master of David.

  19. The fool says in his heart,

  20. there is no God.

  21. They are corrupt.

  22. They do abominable deeds.

  23. There is none who does good.

  24. The Lord looks down from heaven on the children of man

  25. to see if there are any who understand,

  26. who seek after God.

  27. They have all turned aside.

  28. Together they have become corrupt.

  29. There is no one who does good,

  30. not even one.

  31. Have they no knowledge,

  32. all the evildoers who eat up my people

  33. as they eat bread,

  34. and do not call upon the name of the Lord?

  35. There they are in great terror,

  36. for God is with the generation of the righteous.

  37. You would shame the plans of the poor,

  38. but the Lord is His refuge.

  39. Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion

  40. when the Lord restores the fortunes of His people.

  41. Let Jacob rejoice.

  42. Let Israel be glad.

  43. And may the Lord add His blessing to the reading

  44. and the careful hearing of His Word.

  45. Amen.

  46. Amen.

  47. So we've been in the Psalms before,

  48. earlier in the summer,

  49. and when Pastor Capone introduced the Psalms,

  50. he introduced types of Psalms,

  51. and all the Psalms have one or more categories

  52. that they'll fit into.

  53. And this is a Psalm that fits into two categories, really.

  54. It's a Psalm of lament,

  55. and it's a Psalm of wisdom.

  56. We've talked about the Psalms of wisdom before.

  57. A Psalm of wisdom gives us answers to

  58. what is wisdom and what is foolishness.

  59. And this Psalm, in particular,

  60. describes the fool and contrasts him with God's people

  61. who are called the righteous.

  62. We are the righteous in the Psalms, God's people.

  63. And it's also a Psalm of lament.

  64. A lament is a complaint

  65. that comes in brutally honest terms.

  66. Now, it's not just another word for a scripture,

  67. a piece of scripture that's a downer.

  68. That's not what lament is, really.

  69. It instructs us how to grieve.

  70. It is when we are down, when we are grieving,

  71. that we can go to the Psalms,

  72. and the Psalms are our instrument that God gives us

  73. to grieve for the sin both in us

  74. and for the sin around us.

  75. And it is both things.

  76. There is the sin in us that we grieve,

  77. and there is the sin around us that we grieve.

  78. The question that's posed by the lament

  79. frequently in scripture is,

  80. how long, O Lord?

  81. And though those words aren't in here,

  82. in verse seven, that is the lament.

  83. How long, O Lord, till you redeem Israel?

  84. Now, before we go into it,

  85. we have to be honest at the outset

  86. of how this Psalm strikes us,

  87. because we are a culture that doesn't like to judge.

  88. We're a culture that doesn't like to call others foolish

  89. and call ourselves righteous.

  90. We talked about this a little bit

  91. in Sunday school this morning.

  92. Judgmentalism is almost the unforgivable sin

  93. in our culture.

  94. But when we read Psalm 14,

  95. we see in pretty stark terms,

  96. God contrasting the fool with the righteous.

  97. And what we're gonna be doing today

  98. is saying what scripture says,

  99. saying the same thing,

  100. confessing scripture about how fools act

  101. and how the righteous are to act.

  102. Starting with verse one,

  103. the fool says in his heart,

  104. there is no God.

  105. So who is the fool, first of all?

  106. The Psalm is describing it for us.

  107. We find the term in the Bible frequently,

  108. and we need to understand its meaning.

  109. We speak of fools

  110. and speak of the term in a different way.

  111. We talk about stupid people or ignorant people,

  112. but that's not the meaning of the biblical word.

  113. The fool is something different.

  114. The fool is ignorant, yes, ignorant of something,

  115. but he's more than that.

  116. The fool is evil.

  117. The fool is corrupt,

  118. like verse two says,

  119. doing abominable deeds.

  120. A fool, in short,

  121. is someone who rejects wisdom.

  122. And you look in the Proverbs

  123. to see that borne out.

  124. The fool is who rejects wisdom

  125. for the sake of their own evil.

  126. It's not how we use the term

  127. when we wanna describe someone

  128. who has just this sort of benign ignorance.

  129. It's a word for someone

  130. who in their malevolent rejection of God

  131. hates wisdom.

  132. That's the fool.

  133. And it's not something benign.

  134. The kingdom of God is under attack

  135. by fools and their foolishness.

  136. And this is what David's psalm was lamenting.

  137. Now, a word about language.

  138. Because kids, you have a role in this too.

  139. I'm gonna call on you in a minute.

  140. But one thing we have to say

  141. about the language we use

  142. in this sermon and in the psalms,

  143. because your parents may have told you

  144. not to call people fools,

  145. not to call people stupid.

  146. And that's good advice.

  147. Let's just say that first.

  148. That's good advice to all children.

  149. Don't call people fools.

  150. It's good advice for adults.

  151. Don't call people fools.

  152. But I'm gonna give you an exception today.

  153. And the exception is this.

  154. When the Bible calls someone a fool,

  155. we need to say the same thing.

  156. And that's good advice for you kids.

  157. It's good advice for us adults.

  158. When the Bible calls someone a fool,

  159. we should say the same thing.

  160. And the reason why you're not

  161. to use that word lightly,

  162. you're not to use it casually

  163. for someone you're angry with,

  164. is because the fool is someone

  165. who's condemned by God.

  166. When you call someone a fool,

  167. you're using the condemnation of God

  168. and naming it among people.

  169. So we don't use that word lightly.

  170. We don't call down God's condemnation on people.

  171. That's up to God alone.

  172. Jesus gives us an example.

  173. This is in Luke 9,

  174. when the disciples are going through Samaria,

  175. sharing the gospel with the Samarians,

  176. and they're rejecting them.

  177. And one of the disciples says,

  178. these were James and John,

  179. they said,

  180. Lord, do you want us to call fire

  181. to come down from heaven and consume them?

  182. In other words,

  183. call down condemnation on these fools

  184. who were rejecting the gospel,

  185. and Jesus rebuked them.

  186. He said no.

  187. So why did Jesus rebuke his disciples here?

  188. Because only God knows the time and place

  189. for his judgment.

  190. And that time was not the time and place.

  191. Jesus' ministry was not the time and place

  192. for judgment.

  193. So we are not to call down judgment on others.

  194. But we are to say the same thing

  195. that scripture says.

  196. Romans 12 says,

  197. Repay no one for evil for evil,

  198. but give thought to what is honorable

  199. in the sight of all.

  200. If possible,

  201. so far as it depends on you,

  202. live peaceably with all.

  203. Beloved,

  204. never avenge yourselves,

  205. but leave it to the wrath of God.

  206. For it is written,

  207. Vengeance is mine.

  208. I will repay,

  209. says the Lord.

  210. The calling of the Christian

  211. is to bear with foolishness,

  212. to call it what it is,

  213. but to bear with it

  214. and not return evil for evil.

  215. And so we don't use the word lightly,

  216. but we must use it

  217. when scripture does

  218. because foolishness can't be ignored.

  219. It's not something benign to be laughed at.

  220. It's a threat to God's people.

  221. It's a threat to God's kingdom.

  222. As the psalmist tells us,

  223. the threat of foolishness

  224. is a real threat to the people of God

  225. because God is concerned

  226. with defending the defenseless

  227. and the weak.

  228. And this is what the fool says in his heart.

  229. Verse one,

  230. There is no God.

  231. Notice what the fool says.

  232. It's not from his lips that he says

  233. there is no God.

  234. It's from his heart.

  235. So is the psalmist speaking of just atheists here?

  236. I think the answer is no.

  237. We could include them

  238. under the rubric of a fool,

  239. but that's not who the psalmist David

  240. is speaking of.

  241. It's not those atheists that say

  242. with their lips there is no God.

  243. It's those who say it in their heart.

  244. And what they're saying is,

  245. there is no God who rules over me.

  246. That's the practical atheism.

  247. Even if it's not atheism professed with one's lips,

  248. it's the heart that says it.

  249. There is no God who is responsible for me,

  250. who I am subject to.

  251. The denial of God

  252. isn't necessarily a verbal denial

  253. of his existence or of atheism.

  254. Though that is what is unique

  255. about our time in history.

  256. There's a movement now in our culture

  257. called popular atheism.

  258. And there's a category for it

  259. that the philosophers call it

  260. rationalist atheism.

  261. All right, that's the category

  262. that they describe it with.

  263. A rationalist,

  264. by rationalist,

  265. I don't just mean rational.

  266. Rational just means using your own reason.

  267. And that's a good thing.

  268. It's a good thing to use your own reason.

  269. But a rationalist believes

  270. that his own power of reasoning

  271. is all he needs to arrive at the truth.

  272. He doesn't need an authority above him.

  273. He just needs his own reason.

  274. That's the rationalist.

  275. And it's an intellectual trend

  276. that's only emerged recently.

  277. It would have been foreign to David.

  278. There would be no atheist

  279. who would speak such with their lips

  280. that would say,

  281. all I need is my own reason.

  282. That's a recent trend.

  283. It's the idea that you need nothing

  284. but your own reasoning power

  285. to show that God does not exist.

  286. And as Christians,

  287. we should see the problem with that.

  288. Because our rationalism

  289. doesn't factor in sin.

  290. The fact that in our unrighteousness,

  291. we suppress the truth.

  292. So as much as our reasoning has power,

  293. it's deceived.

  294. Because in unrighteousness,

  295. we suppress the truth.

  296. So that means those who

  297. outright deny God's existence,

  298. the rationalist atheists,

  299. they're just one special kind of fool.

  300. But they do provide an example

  301. of when the foolishness of man

  302. arrives at its peak.

  303. Rationalist philosophers, for example,

  304. try to deal with this question.

  305. The question that philosophers deal with

  306. is what or why does anything

  307. in the world exist at all?

  308. Or put another way is

  309. why is there something

  310. rather than nothing?

  311. And maybe some of you

  312. have thought about this question.

  313. Why is there something

  314. rather than nothing?

  315. It poses a problem for the atheist.

  316. But it's a simple question.

  317. And it has a simple answer.

  318. And you kids

  319. have learned this question

  320. and have learned this answer.

  321. I'm going to test this.

  322. I'm putting a,

  323. I'm taking a risk here.

  324. But kids, when I say,

  325. who made you?

  326. What do you say?

  327. Yeah.

  328. When I say, kids,

  329. who made you?

  330. God made me.

  331. Right?

  332. You kids know this

  333. and pay attention, church.

  334. It's from these lips

  335. that God has ordained praise.

  336. They understand

  337. the simple question

  338. and they understand

  339. they're wise enough

  340. to answer simply.

  341. Why is there something

  342. rather than nothing?

  343. Who made you?

  344. God made me.

  345. So take note.

  346. On the other hand,

  347. there are atheists

  348. who answer this way.

  349. They say,

  350. the question,

  351. who made you,

  352. is the wrong question.

  353. Because there's no who.

  354. It's where did you come from?

  355. That's the right question.

  356. And the answers

  357. were from the universe.

  358. And in one instant,

  359. the universe exploded

  360. from nothing.

  361. The stars,

  362. the planets,

  363. life, energy,

  364. everything,

  365. each one of them

  366. created themselves

  367. in effect.

  368. If you want a working

  369. definition of foolishness,

  370. it's this,

  371. that there is no creator.

  372. That everything

  373. just became

  374. of itself.

  375. Now, kids,

  376. again,

  377. if I taught you this,

  378. if I taught you

  379. that the world you live in

  380. created itself,

  381. what does the Bible say

  382. you ought to call me?

  383. A fool.

  384. We know this.

  385. We know this as children.

  386. When someone says to you,

  387. there is no God.

  388. Everything that you are,

  389. everything around you

  390. just came to be.

  391. There's no God over you.

  392. There's no judge.

  393. There's no father.

  394. This is where

  395. you use the words

  396. of scripture.

  397. And you say,

  398. you are a fool.

  399. That is foolish.

  400. And because you're Christians,

  401. you should say it

  402. with gentleness and respect

  403. or you shouldn't say it.

  404. Okay?

  405. That's also important.

  406. But from then on,

  407. you ought to stop listening

  408. because wisdom,

  409. as the Bible says,

  410. is known by her fruits

  411. and a fool doesn't have them.

  412. This kind of fool

  413. will reject

  414. the plainest knowledge

  415. that there is

  416. that all that's around us

  417. had to come from something

  418. or someone.

  419. Someone who is beyond

  420. all of it.

  421. Who isn't just matter.

  422. Who is eternal

  423. and uncreated.

  424. And kids,

  425. you're going to find this.

  426. You're going to find it in school,

  427. especially if you go to college.

  428. There are fools

  429. who teach you

  430. that you came from nothing.

  431. But,

  432. are those atheists

  433. just stupid?

  434. That is not true

  435. because there are

  436. some very important

  437. and smart people

  438. who profess atheism.

  439. No, this foolishness

  440. isn't stupidity.

  441. It's something worse.

  442. This foolishness

  443. is the result

  444. of a heart

  445. that hates God.

  446. Practical atheism

  447. is what we call it.

  448. Practical atheism

  449. is what caused Peter

  450. to deny Christ

  451. because he was ashamed of him.

  452. Remember Peter

  453. who confessed to Jesus,

  454. you are the Christ,

  455. the son of the living God,

  456. the believer

  457. who then,

  458. weeks later,

  459. when Jesus was on trial

  460. and Peter was recognized

  461. as disciples,

  462. he said,

  463. I don't know him.

  464. That's practical atheism.

  465. And believers,

  466. like Peter,

  467. are subject

  468. to practical atheism.

  469. A theologian

  470. said it this way,

  471. all sin

  472. is founded

  473. in secret atheism.

  474. All sin

  475. is founded

  476. in secret atheism.

  477. You see what that means.

  478. It means that

  479. though you are a believer

  480. in Christ

  481. by the Holy Spirit,

  482. you still have a heart

  483. that secretly holds on

  484. to its own atheism.

  485. It does that

  486. so that you can justify

  487. your own lusts

  488. and follow

  489. your own temptations.

  490. and it's very clever

  491. at doing it as well.

  492. One of my favorite authors

  493. is Fyodor Dostoevsky,

  494. a Russian author.

  495. And he said this,

  496. he took a take on

  497. Mark 10, 27

  498. where Jesus said,

  499. with God,

  500. all things are possible.

  501. And Dostoevsky

  502. recorded this ironically

  503. and he said,

  504. without God,

  505. all things are possible.

  506. Do you see his meaning

  507. in that?

  508. Without God,

  509. all things are possible.

  510. It means if you can

  511. just get rid of God,

  512. then you can do anything

  513. you set your heart on.

  514. Because your heart

  515. will say anything

  516. to give you an excuse

  517. to do what you want.

  518. The phrase might never

  519. come to your lips,

  520. there is no God,

  521. but your heart

  522. will say it constantly.

  523. Without God,

  524. you can lie

  525. for what we call

  526. good reasons.

  527. Without God,

  528. you can follow

  529. your own lusts

  530. wherever they lead you.

  531. Without God,

  532. you can live

  533. like you are the only person

  534. that you are responsible to.

  535. Without God,

  536. you can justify murder.

  537. And without God,

  538. you are completely free

  539. from judgment

  540. for all those things.

  541. Then on the other hand,

  542. the very idea

  543. of a righteous God

  544. would ruin your heart's liberty

  545. to justify

  546. its own abominable deeds.

  547. So it's the latent atheism

  548. within you,

  549. within us,

  550. that says,

  551. as you sin,

  552. it says,

  553. I'll never be judged

  554. for this.

  555. Or,

  556. Christian,

  557. when you say in your heart,

  558. God will forgive me

  559. for this.

  560. What is that

  561. but practical atheism?

  562. Though on your lips

  563. you might say,

  564. God will forgive me,

  565. and that's true.

  566. In your heart,

  567. you're doing it

  568. because you're rejecting God.

  569. You're denying

  570. his holiness,

  571. and you're denying

  572. the calling

  573. that he put on you,

  574. the name that he put on you

  575. to live a holy life.

  576. And we rationalize

  577. our own actions

  578. by saying,

  579. God will forgive me

  580. for this.

  581. Our fool's heart

  582. says there is no God

  583. simply because

  584. it's what we want

  585. to be true.

  586. There's no intellectual reason.

  587. It's just what we want

  588. to be true.

  589. When a sinner

  590. wants what's evil,

  591. he or she will always

  592. reject God

  593. to justify their sin.

  594. That's why atheism

  595. can exist.

  596. That's why

  597. Westminster Larger Catechism,

  598. number 28,

  599. says the Lord sent

  600. strong delusions

  601. because they rejected

  602. the truth

  603. so that they would

  604. believe further lies.

  605. Scripture gives us

  606. these words

  607. to remind us

  608. of the universality

  609. of that foolishness.

  610. Believer,

  611. unbeliever,

  612. Jew,

  613. and Greek,

  614. no one

  615. seeks for good.

  616. It catches up

  617. all of humanity

  618. in its net.

  619. Now as we move

  620. on to verse 4,

  621. verses 4 to 6,

  622. the Bible speaks

  623. of what it is

  624. that the fool

  625. does to the people

  626. of God,

  627. the kind of threat

  628. that foolishness

  629. is to the people

  630. of God.

  631. And he says,

  632. as if he puts

  633. the words

  634. in the psalmist's lips,

  635. have they no knowledge,

  636. all the evildoers

  637. who eat up my people

  638. as they eat bread

  639. and do not call

  640. upon the name

  641. of the Lord?

  642. They are all

  643. in great terror

  644. for God is with

  645. the generation

  646. of the righteous.

  647. You would shame

  648. the plans of the poor

  649. but the Lord

  650. is his refuge.

  651. Here's what God

  652. finds particularly grievous

  653. about the deeds

  654. of the fool

  655. or the one

  656. who rejects God.

  657. They eat up my people

  658. as they eat bread,

  659. he says,

  660. and they do not

  661. call upon the name

  662. of the Lord.

  663. How can they do this

  664. is what the psalmist

  665. is asking.

  666. Have they no knowledge?

  667. It's words of shock.

  668. How can you do this?

  669. It's like you have

  670. no knowledge at all.

  671. Have they no knowledge,

  672. the psalmist asks.

  673. Or in other words,

  674. how is it possible

  675. to be such fools

  676. so consistently?

  677. It's like the reaction

  678. you have when you know

  679. someone's about to do

  680. something monumentally stupid.

  681. And we see this

  682. if you look at videos

  683. on the internet.

  684. This is the way

  685. I think of it.

  686. When I look at a video

  687. on the internet

  688. and it starts with

  689. one of two things.

  690. It starts with

  691. someone on a skateboard

  692. or someone lighting

  693. a firecracker.

  694. That tells you

  695. something very stupid

  696. is about to happen.

  697. We've all seen this.

  698. And you say in your heart,

  699. have they no knowledge?

  700. Are they not even thinking?

  701. And then what happens,

  702. you watch the video unfold

  703. and you watch it

  704. because it's going

  705. to be funny.

  706. That's why I got

  707. on the internet.

  708. And you watch.

  709. But while you watch,

  710. you think to yourself,

  711. don't they think?

  712. What made them think

  713. this was a good idea?

  714. Don't they know

  715. what's going to happen?

  716. So it is when God says,

  717. or that God says,

  718. when someone decides

  719. to do something like

  720. steal from the poor,

  721. and I'm thinking specifically

  722. of payday lenders.

  723. They hang out

  724. around military bases

  725. a lot

  726. where they can charge

  727. 36, 40% interest,

  728. up to 500% effective interest

  729. for someone to bring

  730. your pay stub in

  731. so that you can get

  732. an advance on your next paycheck

  733. while they take

  734. a third of it out.

  735. Why do they do that?

  736. Because they've taken

  737. so much money from you

  738. that you have to

  739. come back again.

  740. And you get deeper

  741. and deeper in debt.

  742. They take people

  743. who have a need

  744. and they sell them a loan

  745. and plunge them into debt.

  746. They eat up my people

  747. as they eat bread,

  748. the Lord says.

  749. They steal from the poor.

  750. How can you do that?

  751. How can you do that

  752. and feel like it's okay?

  753. You won't be judged.

  754. Or the evildoers,

  755. the fools,

  756. trap vulnerable people

  757. in addiction.

  758. Think of gambling.

  759. Think of sex.

  760. Think of alcohol.

  761. We used to live in Las Vegas.

  762. You go to the casinos there

  763. and they have ways

  764. of trapping you

  765. into all three at once

  766. because you'll go in there

  767. and all three will be present.

  768. Gambling, alcohol, and sex

  769. because they know

  770. you're likely to get trapped

  771. by at least one of them.

  772. And they want to plunge you

  773. in your temptations.

  774. They want to eat up

  775. the people of God

  776. as they eat bread.

  777. Or they could convince a woman

  778. that she should claim

  779. her reproductive rights

  780. and destroy her child.

  781. That's atheism.

  782. You can't do that

  783. if you believe

  784. there's a God over you,

  785. that there's a God

  786. who will judge.

  787. When this happens,

  788. the Lord says

  789. that these fools

  790. are eating up my people

  791. as they eat bread.

  792. How can anyone be so shameless

  793. is what the psalmist asks.

  794. The psalmist asks,

  795. have they no knowledge?

  796. How could anyone

  797. so high-handedly

  798. do these things

  799. to men and women

  800. who belong to God?

  801. Do they think

  802. that he doesn't see?

  803. Do they think

  804. that he doesn't care?

  805. The problem is

  806. that the fool does know.

  807. It's not a knowledge problem.

  808. It's a sin problem.

  809. The knowledge is there.

  810. In verse 4,

  811. we read it.

  812. All the evildoers

  813. who eat up my people

  814. as they eat bread

  815. and do not call upon

  816. the name of the Lord.

  817. As if the Lord is there,

  818. the knowledge is there,

  819. but they're not calling upon him.

  820. God is holding

  821. all humanity accountable

  822. for calling upon

  823. the name of the Lord.

  824. The first chapter of Romans,

  825. if you'll turn

  826. to your Bibles there,

  827. Romans chapter 1,

    Romans 1 chapter mention

  828. and I'm going to read

  829. verses 19 and 22.

  830. The first chapter of Romans

  831. says that each of us,

  832. whether we call ourselves

  833. believers or unbelievers,

  834. we do know God

  835. in an important sense.

  836. Not the sense of knowing him

  837. as a savior necessarily,

  838. but the sense of knowing him

  839. as our creator.

  840. And this is what

  841. Romans 1 tells us.

  842. Romans 1,

  843. and I'll read

  844. verses 19 to 22.

  845. Follow with me.

  846. For what can be known

  847. about God

  848. is plain to them,

  849. and he speaks of the fool,

  850. the one who suppresses

  851. the truth,

  852. because God has shown it

  853. to them.

  854. For his invisible attributes,

  855. namely his eternal power

  856. and divine nature,

  857. have been clearly perceived

  858. ever since the creation

  859. of the world

  860. and the things

  861. that have been made.

  862. So they are without excuse.

  863. For although they knew God,

  864. they did not honor him

  865. as God

  866. or give thanks to him.

  867. But they became futile

  868. in their thinking,

  869. and their foolish hearts

  870. were darkened.

  871. Claiming to be wise,

  872. they became fools.

  873. They knew God,

  874. but they didn't call upon God.

  875. And God is holding those accountable

  876. for calling upon him.

  877. And he's holding those accountable

  878. for following him

  879. and defending the defenseless,

  880. because that's who God cares for.

  881. God is caring for the defenseless.

  882. So though they knew God,

  883. they were completely blind

  884. to the fact

  885. that there is a just God

  886. in heaven.

  887. Yes, knowing God,

  888. even having that knowledge,

  889. they became fools

  890. because of the evil

  891. that they wanted to follow.

  892. This is a fearful psalm

  893. for the fool,

  894. but even as it admonishes us

  895. for the foolishness

  896. that still lives in our hearts,

  897. it's also a great comfort

  898. for God's people.

  899. Because though they are reckless

  900. and shameless in their evil,

  901. devouring people,

  902. as the scripture says,

  903. in a manner of speaking,

  904. like it was their daily food,

  905. God sees.

  906. God is not standing aloof.

  907. God will put an end to evil

  908. for the sake of his people.

  909. He isn't just watching,

  910. aloof and uncaring.

  911. What is God doing?

  912. God is watching judgment

  913. pile up on evildoers

  914. for his judgment,

  915. his righteous judgment.

  916. Because what does it say

  917. in verse five?

  918. God is with the generation

  919. of the righteous.

  920. Who are the righteous?

  921. Own it, people of God.

  922. You are God's righteous

  923. if you are in Christ.

  924. Foolish as your heart is,

  925. you are God's righteous.

  926. Here's where the lament

  927. of scripture is so needed

  928. for God's people,

  929. and that's right there

  930. in verse five.

  931. For God is with the generation

  932. of the righteous.

  933. Among all the fools of humanity,

  934. God has still called

  935. to himself a people.

  936. And if you are a believer

  937. in Christ,

  938. though you know

  939. your own foolishness,

  940. you are also his righteous.

  941. And we need Psalm 14

  942. because we need to say

  943. that to ourselves.

  944. Because we don't say

  945. that to ourselves.

  946. We don't like to consider

  947. ourselves a holy huddle,

  948. to be holier than thou

  949. when we look at the world

  950. around us.

  951. But we need scripture

  952. to say that to us,

  953. that God is with the generation

  954. of the righteous.

  955. And when I speak the psalm

  956. in my lament,

  957. when I speak the psalm

  958. when I'm suffering

  959. for my own sin,

  960. when I'm suffering

  961. from the sins of others,

  962. I need to look at the psalm

  963. and say,

  964. I am God's righteous

  965. and God is for me.

  966. And he will put an end

  967. to evildoers.

  968. In the meantime,

  969. we lament.

  970. We lament with the psalmist

  971. who says,

  972. how long, O Lord?

  973. That's the lament

  974. of scripture.

  975. And it's in different words

  976. here in verse 7.

  977. The psalmist says,

  978. oh, that salvation

  979. for Israel would come

  980. out of Zion.

  981. When the Lord restores

  982. the fortunes

  983. of his people,

  984. let Jacob rejoice,

  985. let Israel be glad.

  986. When he says

  987. that the Lord

  988. will come from Zion,

  989. he's meaning

  990. God's holy hill,

  991. not necessarily

  992. the physical location

  993. of Zion

  994. and present

  995. earthly Jerusalem,

  996. but God is going

  997. to come from

  998. the capital of his kingdom,

  999. in this case from heaven,

  1000. to rescue the righteous

  1001. and put an end

  1002. to evildoers.

  1003. And that should not

  1004. terrify us

  1005. because we are

  1006. his righteous

1007. and we need to have

  1008. confidence in that.

  1009. When we lament

  1010. over our own sin

  1011. and we lament

  1012. over our own foolishness,

  1013. the word of God

  1014. has to have priority

  1015. because we have

  1016. to call ourselves

  1017. righteous

  1018. when scripture

  1019. calls us righteous.

  1020. Though we know

  1021. our own foolishness.

  1022. So that's how

  1023. and why

  1024. we ought to lament,

  1025. particularly when we lament

  1026. with Psalm 14.

1027. Because when we do it

  1028. on our own,

1029. we grieve on our own,

1030. we lament on our own,

  1031. what do we do?

1032. We do one of two things.

  1033. We either devolve

  1034. into self-pity

  1035. because we have

  1036. no hope for ourselves

  1037. or we absolve,

  1038. what's the word,

  1039. devolve

  1040. into self-righteousness

  1041. because we look

  1042. at all the sin

  1043. around us

  1044. and we call

  1045. ourselves better.

  1046. We don't look

  1047. at the foolishness

  1048. in our hearts,

1049. we look at the foolishness

  1050. in others

  1051. and we get self-righteous.

  1052. We could be

  1053. in self-pity

  1054. as we lament

  1055. or we could be

  1056. in self-righteousness.

  1057. Scripture doesn't allow

  1058. either error to happen.

1059. When we see the foolishness

  1060. of unbelief around us,

  1061. we are sometimes tempted

1062. just to wag our fingers

  1063. but then we look

  1064. at the words

  1065. of the psalmist

  1066. and he says,

1067. when God looks from heaven

1068. down on the children of man,

  1069. what does he see?

  1070. No one.

1071. No one who seeks for good.

1072. And what does Paul say

  1073. that we read earlier

  1074. in the preparation

  1075. for worship

  1076. in Romans 3?

  1077. Jew and Gentile alike,

  1078. educated and uneducated,

  1079. professing atheist

  1080. or professing believer,

  1081. all alike,

  1082. do not seek God.

1083. If we are to have

  1084. any hope

  1085. to be saved,

1086. it's not in our hope

  1087. of finding God,

  1088. it's in our hope

  1089. of God seeking us.

1090. He is the one who seeks

1091. and he's the only one

  1092. who seeks.

1093. Which is why David says

  1094. in verse 7,

  1095. oh, that salvation

  1096. for Israel would come

  1097. out of Zion.

1098. It has to come from him

1099. because we don't seek him.

  1100. When the Lord restores

1101. the fortunes of his people,

  1102. let Jacob rejoice

1103. and let Israel be glad.

  1104. So when we lament

  1105. with the scriptures,

  1106. we're not given

  1107. the option of self-pity

  1108. and we're not given

  1109. the option of self-righteousness

  1110. because it wraps up

  1111. all men alike

  1112. under the same umbrella

  1113. of the fool

  1114. and it rescues

  1115. God's people specifically

  1116. from the fool.

  1117. God's spirit

  1118. takes away

  1119. our self-righteousness

  1120. and in its place,

  1121. he gives us hope

  1122. in God's righteousness.

  1123. The Lord gave us

  1124. this psalm

  1125. as a lament

1126. that his people can share.

  1127. When we follow

  1128. scripture's laments,

  1129. we hear God

  1130. expressing words

  1131. assuring us

  1132. that he sympathizes

  1133. with our weaknesses

  1134. and with our sufferings.

  1135. Because, after all,

  1136. God knows

  1137. what it's like

  1138. to be eaten up

  1139. by evildoers

  1140. like bread.

1141. Now, don't let those words

  1142. escape your notice

  1143. when they eat up

  1144. God's people

  1145. as they eat bread.

  1146. That's what the evildoers

  1147. are described as.

1148. Did that occur to you

  1149. that we lament

  1150. the evildoers

1151. who want to eat up

  1152. God's people?

  1153. Because God himself

  1154. gave his body

  1155. as bread

  1156. to a people

  1157. who previously hated him.

  1158. I don't think

  1159. those words

  1160. are an accident

  1161. when the psalmist

  1162. uses the metaphor

  1163. of bread

  1164. because Jesus Christ

  1165. was willingly

  1166. eaten up like bread

  1167. by fools

  1168. who did not

  1169. call upon his name,

1170. who did not seek him.

  1171. He sought them out

  1172. and he gave us

  1173. the Lord's Supper

  1174. as a symbol

1175. of how he has sought us

1176. and what it cost him

  1177. to seek us,

  1178. to bring people

  1179. who hated him

  1180. into his kingdom.

  1181. The symbol

  1182. of our communion

  1183. with Christ

1184. is even given to us

  1185. in this picture,

  1186. that Christ

  1187. was eaten up

  1188. like bread

  1189. for people

  1190. who in their foolishness

  1191. did not

  1192. call upon the Lord.

  1193. In fact,

1194. this is the Lord's Supper.

  1195. It's many things,

1196. but one thing it is,

  1197. it's God's people

  1198. remembering

1199. how we in our foolishness

1200. ate up a just man

  1201. just like bread

  1202. because God knows

1203. that of this human race

  1204. on whom he looks

  1205. down from heaven,

  1206. there is no one

  1207. who seeks for God,

  1208. no one

  1209. who does good.

  1210. Every one of those

  1211. that God calls his,

  1212. they are his

  1213. because he sought

  1214. them out himself.

1215. The Lord is the one

  1216. who seeks.

  1217. Before you were

  1218. sought by God,

  1219. all of you,

  1220. without exception,

  1221. whether you came

1222. to faith as a child

  1223. or later in life,

  1224. all of you,

  1225. without exception,

  1226. everyone were by nature

  1227. haters of God.

  1228. Practical atheists,

  1229. we could say,

  1230. who don't say

  1231. there is no God

  1232. with their lips maybe,

  1233. but they say it

  1234. in their hearts.

  1235. Knowing God,

  1236. but pretending not to.

1237. We pretend not to know God,

  1238. so we can follow

  1239. our lusts.

  1240. So for all us

  1241. who suffer with evil,

  1242. God sympathizes

  1243. because God did more.

1244. He knows what we endured

  1245. because he endured it

  1246. himself in Christ.

  1247. He also knows

  1248. how powerless we are

  1249. over our own foolishness,

1250. which is why he gave us

  1251. wisdom from himself.

  1252. He rescued us

  1253. from our foolishness,

1254. not by making us smarter,

  1255. but by giving us

  1256. the Holy Spirit,

  1257. his Holy Spirit

  1258. who enlightens us

  1259. to know wisdom.

  1260. And more important

  1261. than knowing wisdom,

  1262. loving wisdom.

1263. He had to give us

1264. a heart to love wisdom

  1265. before we would

  1266. seek wisdom.

  1267. So when we lament

1268. with the words of Scripture,

  1269. we lament rightly

  1270. and with hope.

1271. And this kind of lament,

1272. the lament in Psalm 14,

  1273. brings us nearer

  1274. to the gospel

  1275. because it culminates

  1276. in this hope

  1277. that salvation will come

  1278. from Zion,

  1279. from God's holy hill.

1280. We've seen the first fruits

  1281. of that salvation already

1282. when Paul in Romans 11 writes

  1283. and he declares

  1284. what the psalmist says,

  1285. the deliverer will come

  1286. from Zion,

  1287. he will banish ungodliness

  1288. from Jacob,

  1289. and this will be

  1290. my covenant with them

  1291. when I take away

  1292. their sins.

  1293. That salvation is not

  1294. just freedom

1295. from the evil around us,

  1296. though that is part

  1297. of our freedom,

  1298. it's the freedom

1299. from the evil within us.

  1300. That when the psalm

  1301. makes believers face

  1302. the practical atheism

  1303. that's even in themselves,

1304. what comes out of us

1305. is a lament for deliverance

  1306. from our own evil

  1307. finally and for good.

1308. And this God will do

  1309. because he promised

  1310. that God is with

  1311. the generation

  1312. of the righteous.

  1313. Let's pray together.

  1314. Father in heaven,

1315. it's you who teach us

  1316. through the Holy Spirit.

  1317. So do that now

  1318. as we reflect

  1319. on this lament

  1320. from your word.

  1321. Accept the pleas

  1322. of the fools

  1323. that you saved

  1324. and be pleased

  1325. with the feeble

  1326. attempt at obedience

  1327. that we're making

  1328. as we're inspired

1329. to give it to you

1330. and to give you glory.

  1331. And we do indeed

  1332. give you glory

1333. as the one who sought us,

1334. the only one who sought us.

  1335. When we of ourselves

  1336. wanted nothing else

  1337. to be free

  1338. from our sovereign king

  1339. and judge,

1340. to follow our own desires,

1341. to follow our own rule,

  1342. you rescued us

  1343. from our self-will.

  1344. Now keep us firmly

  1345. in your hand,

1346. not allowing our foolish hearts

  1347. to draw us away

  1348. from the love

  1349. that you showed us

  1350. in Christ.

  1351. Now make the praises

  1352. we give in song

1353. now be pleasing to you

  1354. as we repent

  1355. and are assured

1356. that you have called us

  1357. your righteous.

1358. In Jesus' name we pray.

  1359. Amen.
