  1. Good morning. My name is Matthew Capone, and I'm the pastor here at Shine Mountain Presbyterian

  2. Church, and it's my joy to bring God's word to you today. Special welcome if you are new or

  3. visiting with us. We're glad that you're here, and we're glad that you're here not because you're

  4. filling a seat, but because we are following after Jesus together as one community, and as we follow

  5. Jesus together, we're convinced that there's no one so good that they don't need God's grace,

  6. and no one so bad that they can't have it, which means that God has something to say to everyone

  7. in his word. He has something to say to people who've been Christians their entire lives,

  8. and he also has something to say to people who might have doubts and questions and objections

  9. to Christianity, and so it's with that that we turn to God's word as we do every week. We are in

  10. the season of Advent, and as I've been telling you, Advent is an English word that comes from a Latin

  11. word, which means to arrive or to come, and Advent's the time of year when we celebrate that

  12. Jesus came to earth. We celebrate his first coming, and then we also look forward to his second coming.

  13. Of course, that's what we always do as Christians, but it's something that we focus on in a special way

  14. at Christmas, and we focus on the fact that Jesus became a man and was born in a manger in a stable.

  15. As we're going through Advent, we're in the book of Micah. Remember that Micah is a book filled with

  16. prophecies by a man named Micah, who is a prophet in the 8th century BC, and he prophesied to Judah,

  17. which was the kingdom of Israel that was in the south. He was coming after the time of the great

  18. king, so this is after David and Solomon, but it's also before the exile. It's before God's people

  19. went in exile to Babylon. It's that in-between phase, and we've seen that Micah is a book about both

  20. judgment and salvation. We looked at judgment with chapter one, and then last week we were in

  21. salvation with chapter four, looking at the coming kingdom that Jesus is going to bring about.

  22. Now, some of you have asked me, and even folks outside of our church have asked me, why in the

  23. world are we looking at Micah for Advent? Maybe you've been wondering that question. The answer is

  24. going to come out a little bit today. The reason that we're looking at Micah for Advent is that Micah

  25. is the only Old Testament book where it's predicted that Jesus is going to be born in Bethlehem.

  26. This is the book of the Bethlehem prophecy, and that's what we're going to look at today. We have

  27. been working our way up to this point. This is part of the reason we've been singing all these songs

  28. about Bethlehem this morning, and we're going to ask just a simple question. Why does it matter

  29. that Jesus was born in Bethlehem? You might ask it a different way. Jesus was born in Bethlehem.

  30. Who cares? Why do we make such a big deal out of it? Why do we have songs about it?

  31. What is it? Why is there such a huge emphasis at Christmas on the birthplace of Jesus? You notice,

  32. by the way, when I introduced myself to you, I didn't say, I'm Matthew Capone, and I was born in

  33. Waco, Texas. My birthplace is insignificant, but the Bible seems to make a big deal out of Jesus'

  34. birthplace. It's with that we're going to turn. We're in Micah chapter 5, starting at verse 1.

    Micah 5 chapter mention

  35. As we come to this, remember that this is God's word. God tells us that his word is more precious

  36. than gold, even the finest gold. It is sweeter than honey, even honey that comes straight from the

  37. honeycomb. That's why we're going to read together now, starting at verse 1.

  38. Verse 3.

  39. Verse 5.

  40. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  41. Our Father in heaven, we thank you that you speak to us, and even more than that, we thank you that

  42. you sent your Son to be not just a king and a ruler, but also to be a shepherd.

  43. We ask that you would shepherd us this morning by your word, that you would help us to understand more

  44. and more what it is about Jesus Christ that is glorious and wonderful, that should bring us both fear and joy.

  45. And we ask that you would do that by your spirit now.

  46. We ask these things boldly, not because we have earned them, but because Jesus has earned them for us.

  47. And so we ask them in his name. Amen.

  48. As you may remember from chapters 1 through 3, there was predictions of great judgment that was coming to Israel because of their sin.

  49. And that continues here in chapter 5, even though we're hearing about the salvation that God's going to bring.

  50. It's salvation that's going to come in the future because judgment's coming in the present.

  51. And that's what's here in verse 1.

  52. Muster your troops, O daughter of troops, is talking about the city of Jerusalem, which is going to be sieged.

  53. And most likely what's being talked about here is the siege that's going to happen in 701 B.C.

  54. by Sennacherib, who's an Assyrian.

  55. And this is going to be part of the beginning of the downfall of Judah.

  56. This attack is going to be, we find out, embarrassing for Israel.

  57. Their ruler, who Micah can't even call a king, bring himself to call a king,

  58. and said he calls him simply a judge, is going to be struck on the cheek.

  59. The enemies are going to get so close that they're going to be able to shame God's king.

  60. Most likely this king here is Hezekiah.

  61. And you can read more about this in the historical books and also in portions of Isaiah.

  62. But it's not going to be well for Israel as this judgment is coming.

  63. And so as they're living in the present, looking at what's coming down the pike,

  64. which is going to be incredibly painful and destructive,

  65. it's with that that this word of hope comes in about Bethlehem.

  66. They, like us, we may not be experiencing judgment in the same way,

  67. but they, like us, live in a world that's filled with sin and brokenness.

  68. And they, like us, need a word of hope in the midst of that.

  69. And so as Micah likes to do, putting judgment and hope together,

  70. he starts with judgment and gives them that hope.

  71. Why is it that they should have hope in the midst of a coming judgment?

  72. Why should they have hope as destruction is on its way?

  73. What is it about this king that's going to give them hope?

  74. Why and how should they have confidence?

  75. Last week we saw in Micah chapter 4 they could have hope in the kingdom that's coming.

    Micah 4 chapter mention

  76. And this week in Micah chapter 5 it's going to be hope not in the kingdom, but in the king.

    Micah 5 chapter mention

  77. The first thing we find out about this king, verse 2, is that he's born in Bethlehem.

  78. In early 2008, Katie Couric, the news anchor, host, asked all the political candidates at the time,

  79. and the primaries hadn't completed, so it was many candidates on both sides, Democrats and Republicans.

  80. She asked them, if you end up in the Oval Office, which book are you going to take with you?

  81. If you could take any one book besides the Bible, what would it be?

  82. There was a variety of responses, most of them seeming pretty calculated.

  83. There was one that was a little bit surprising, and it came from Barack Obama.

  84. Obama said, I would bring one book, and it would be Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin,

  85. which was a Pulitzer Prize-winning biography of Abraham Lincoln.

  86. And then he went on to talk about the ways in which he liked Lincoln's leadership style

  87. and the ways that he wanted to follow after it.

  88. Now, this wasn't a coincidence.

  89. A year earlier, when he had announced his candidacy in 2007,

  90. he had decided he was going to announce it at the old state capitol in Springfield, Illinois.

  91. And he was doing this very intentionally.

  92. He had chosen this location to make a point,

  93. because it was the old state capitol where Abraham Lincoln had worked as a legislator,

  94. and then Obama had worked as a legislator.

  95. It was the old state capitol where Abraham Lincoln had given his house-divided speech.

  96. It was the old state capitol where Barack Obama was going to announce that he was running for president.

  97. And so he was trying to draw this parallel between himself and a previous ruler based on location.

  98. Now, whether you like President Obama, whether you don't like him,

  99. whether you agree with him, whether you disagree with him, that's not the point.

  100. The point is this.

  101. Place matters.

  102. Geography matters when it comes to rulers.

  103. It mattered back then, and it matters now.

  104. Obama was trying to make a point about the kind of president that he wanted to be.

  105. God, in Micah, is making a point about the kind of ruler that his king not wants to be, but will be.

  106. God understands location and the power of political symbolism even more than we do,

  107. and so he wants to make a powerful statement about his political leader.

  108. His leader is going to be a Bethlehem kind of leader.

  109. The original readers would have known instantly,

  110. just like news articles immediately picked up on the parallelism that was being drawn by Springfield, Illinois,

  111. between Abraham Lincoln and Barack Obama,

  112. so the readers of this would have understood this king that's coming,

  113. he is going to be born in the exact same birthplace as the great king of Israel, King David.

  114. This king is going to be a David-like king.

  115. He's going to follow in the lineage of David.

  116. He's coming from the hometown and the birthplace of David.

  117. Imagine for a second, remember, these folks are living in a time after the great kings.

  118. They're living when the kingdom has been divided.

  119. Rehoboam oversaw the division of the kingdom because of Solomon's sin,

  120. and so they're living in a time when the glory days are over.

  121. God gives them hope by telling them this new king that's coming,

  122. he is coming from the same place as the king of the glory days.

  123. He is going to be that kind of king.

  124. David was the king that Israel looked back to over and over as the model of the best king.

  125. He was the king that God had called a man after his own heart.

  126. And so their hope is that God is going to bring the glory days back again

  127. because it is going to be another Bethlehem king.

  128. This is going to be another king just like David.

  129. We find out, though, that it's going to be not just like David.

  130. This king is going to be greater than David.

  131. Verse 2, at the very end, we're told,

  132. this king's coming forth is from old, from ancient days.

  133. We could take this several ways.

  134. Some people take this phrase to mean that this is an eternal king.

  135. This is a king who had existed, had preexisted the time of this prophecy.

  136. It could mean that.

  137. We don't know for sure.

  138. There's other ways this phrase is used in the Old Testament.

  139. We know this at least.

  140. There has been a prophecy of a king from Judah

  141. all the way back from the book of Genesis.

  142. In Genesis chapter 49, there's a prophecy that says that Judah

    Genesis 49 chapter mention

  143. is going to have a king and the nations are going to be under him.

  144. And so even David had not fulfilled the prophecies

  145. about the great king coming from Judah.

  146. From of old, from the time before Israel was even a nation,

  147. it was just the patriarchs,

  148. there was an expectation that they were going to have a king

  149. who would be a ruler over him,

  150. and he would be so great and so powerful

  151. that he would rule over what we saw last week in Micah chapter 4,

    Micah 4 chapter mention

  152. a reign that would include all peoples coming to him.

  153. What kind of king is going to give them hope?

  154. It is going to be a David kind of king, but even better.

  155. We see that also in verse 4.

  156. He is going to be great to the ends of the earth.

  157. The great king that Israel has been waiting for,

  158. the king that is even better and more glorious than King David,

  159. is on his way.

  160. And we know that he's going to be greater and more glorious.

  161. We know that he's on his way in part because he is a king from Bethlehem.

  162. David's origins and his origins are the same.

  163. The point is this.

  164. Jesus is a political figure.

  165. He is a real king coming with real power

  166. to set real world peace on this earth.

  167. He is not just some sentimental figure at Christmas

  168. that reminds us of a nice story,

  169. but he is a powerful political ruler

  170. who is going to bring full and final peace to this earth.

  171. Remember that the folks reading this, receiving this,

  172. are people facing a real political threat.

  173. They have a ruler who's coming up against them,

  174. who's going to destroy them.

  175. And so, of course, they're looking for someone just as,

  176. in fact, not just as, but even more powerful

  177. to be able to defend them

  178. from the threats that are coming up against them.

  179. This king is going to be that kind of king.

  180. And we see that in the story of Jesus' birth.

  181. Jesus comes as a political threat.

  182. He shows up in Luke 2.

  183. And those of you who are in Sunday school

  184. have been warmed up for this.

  185. He showed up in Luke 2, and the angels show up.

  186. What do the shepherds do in response to the angels?

  187. Do they say, oh, bless their hearts?

  188. No, they're very afraid.

  189. Why?

  190. Because it's a host of angels.

  191. And the word host is a word for an army.

  192. There is a military force that shows up

  193. when Jesus is born,

  194. because the king, of course,

  195. would not show up without his army.

  196. I grew up in a church where there was,

  197. just like here, some military folks.

  198. And there was a man who was in the military,

  199. and he was present at one time

  200. when President Bush was on a ship out in the sea.

  201. I don't remember the exact incidents.

  202. I think there were multiple times

  203. when President Bush was on a ship.

  204. But he said, as soon as the president disappeared

  205. and was off the ship,

  206. all these divers just started popping up in the water.

  207. They'd been underwater the whole time,

  208. just waiting, just in case something went wrong.

  209. They could come in.

  210. They weren't just gonna have protection from the air.

  211. They weren't just gonna have protection on the ship.

  212. They were gonna have protection in the water,

  213. all around them.

  214. From an earthly perspective, we might say,

  215. man, that's so powerful.

  216. Only a great man and a great leader

  217. would have people not just on the boat,

  218. but surrounding and in the water,

  219. ready to take action in case a threat appeared.

  220. From a heavenly perspective,

  221. oh, isn't that cute?

  222. I bet he felt really safe.

  223. God's king shows up,

  224. not with men in the water,

  225. but with angels in the air,

  226. because he is a king coming to his people.

  227. Herod is a real king who is threatened.

  228. He's so threatened that Jesus has to go

  229. into political exile in Egypt.

  230. Herod wants to kill him,

  231. and because he can't,

  232. he goes on to kill every child who's a man

  233. who's under the age of two in Bethlehem.

  234. That's how threatened he is by Jesus.

  235. When we started this worship service this morning,

  236. we sang a political anthem.

  237. We sang Jesus shall reign.

  238. We were declaring that he is the king who is coming,

  239. the king that is greater than David

  240. to bring peace and justice to this world.

  241. Bethlehem reminds us

  242. that Jesus is a real king

  243. who comes to shake the powers of evil to their core.

  244. And not only does he come to do that,

  245. he's powerful enough to accomplish it.

  246. Jesus is the true and real and greatest king.

  247. He is a Bethlehem kind of king.

  248. Jesus is just as real

  249. and infinitely more powerful

  250. than John F. Kennedy and Jimmy Carter

  251. and Barack Obama and Donald Trump

  252. and Bill Clinton and George W. Bush

  253. and George H. W. Bush and Ronald Reagan.

  254. He is no less of a leader.

  255. In fact, he is so much more.

  256. Yes, he comes to bring peace in our hearts.

  257. He also comes to bring peace to this world.

  258. These are people who feel a real threat,

  259. a physical threat.

  260. And the promise is that Jesus is coming.

  261. We proclaim when we sing about our Bethlehem king

  262. that God's power is in this world

  263. to destroy evil and to rule us.

  264. That's what we confess this morning

  265. in our confession of faith.

  266. And so why does Bethlehem matter?

  267. Christmas is a political holiday

  268. because we celebrate the birth

  269. and coming and reign of our king.

  270. And he is a greater and more powerful king

  271. than any other on this earth.

  272. He is a Bethlehem king.

  273. For the folks receiving this word

  274. in the eighth century,

  275. they don't just have to look back

  276. to the glory days of David,

  277. but they also have to wait.

  278. Something more powerful and greater

  279. than David is coming.

  280. And verse three,

  281. they're going to have to wait

  282. seven centuries to get it.

  283. Something more powerful and greater

  284. than David is coming.

  285. And they're going to have to wait

  286. seven centuries for it to actually happen.

  287. Verse three,

  288. he shall give them up until the time

  289. when she who is in labor has given birth.

  290. Now this could be metaphorical here.

  291. It could be referring to the pains of Israel

  292. as they work through exile.

  293. It could be referring to Mary.

  294. Either way,

  295. there's going to be a long wait.

  296. And this long wait

  297. is going to be like childbirth.

  298. It's going to be incredibly painful.

  299. And once the wait is over,

  300. who cares how painful it was?

  301. Because something so glorious

  302. and wonderful is there,

  303. that it eclipses everything

  304. that came before.

  305. Just like the people receiving this word,

  306. we also wait.

  307. Remember I said earlier

  308. that prophecy is often

  309. not an on and off switch,

  310. but a dimmer switch.

  311. The king has come.

  312. And we still wait.

  313. The people receiving this word

  314. waited seven centuries.

  315. We have been waiting 2,000 years

  316. for Jesus to come again.

  317. And we, like them,

  318. continue to wait in hope.

  319. Because we trust and know

  320. and believe

  321. that the Bethlehem king is coming.

  322. And he is coming

  323. to be an even greater king.

  324. And so Jesus

  325. is a king worth waiting for.

  326. This current age will pass.

  327. This too shall pass.

  328. And until it does,

  329. we continue every Sunday

  330. together as a church

  331. to pray the Lord's prayer

  332. and say,

  333. your kingdom come

  334. and your will be done

  335. on earth

  336. as it is in heaven.

  337. Because we are waiting with hope

  338. for our great

  339. and mighty king.

  340. Now it makes sense

  341. that they were looking

  342. for a political liberator.

  343. It makes sense

  344. that people were confused

  345. by Jesus when he did come.

  346. He's presented here

  347. as a solution

  348. to a war that's happening.

  349. But he's not just

  350. a great and mighty king.

  351. That's not the only thing

  352. that Bethlehem tells us.

  353. Go back to verse 2.

  354. But you, O Bethlehem,

  355. Ethraphah,

  356. who are too little

  357. to be among

  358. the clans of Judah.

  359. Bethlehem is a nothing city

  360. that no one cares about.

  361. Micah chapter 1,

    Micah 1 chapter mention

  362. if you remember

  363. two weeks ago,

  364. we read a list of cities

  365. that were going to be destroyed

  366. by God's judgment.

  367. Guess which city

  368. wasn't on the list?

  369. Bethlehem.

  370. Because no one cares

  371. about Bethlehem.

  372. In Joshua chapter 15,

    Joshua 15 chapter mention

  373. and this is probably

  374. what's being referenced here,

  375. there's a list

  376. of all the cities

  377. that belong

  378. to the tribe of Judah.

  379. Guess which city

  380. doesn't make the cut?

  381. Bethlehem.

  382. Bethlehem is not

  383. where we would expect

  384. a ruler to come from.

  385. It is silly

  386. to think of Bethlehem

  387. as a place of power

  388. and strength.

  389. We would expect

  390. that this would be

  391. a ruler who maybe

  392. came from Jerusalem.

  393. Maybe he's a ruler

  394. from Dan

  395. up in the north.

  396. But no,

  397. it's a ruler

  398. from a city

  399. that no one's heard of

  400. outside of the fact

  401. that David

  402. happened to be born here.

  403. This king

  404. will be strong

  405. and he will shame

  406. the strong things

  407. of this world

  408. because he will also

  409. be a king of weakness.

  410. He is the great

  411. and mighty king.

  412. He's also the weak

  413. and humble king.

  414. Bethlehem tells us

  415. both things.

  416. This is going to be

  417. a great leader

  418. but he's not going

  419. to come from Harvard.

  420. He's going to have

  421. a two-year degree

  422. from a community college.

  423. He's not going to come

  424. from Colorado Springs.

  425. He's going to come

  426. from Lyman.

  427. He's not going to come

  428. from the east coast

  429. or the west coast.

  430. He's going to come

  431. from some little town

  432. in the Midwest

  433. that you've never heard of.

  434. Jesus is not just

  435. a great king.

  436. He's not just great

  437. and strong

  438. but he's humble

  439. and weak.

  440. He is a powerful leader

  441. coming with a heavenly army

  442. and he's also

  443. a little baby

  444. born in a manger.

  445. If he was only

  446. great and strong

  447. Jesus would not

  448. save us.

  449. And if he were only

  450. unexpected and weak

  451. he could not save us.

  452. If Jesus were only

  453. great and strong

  454. he would not save us.

  455. And if he were only

  456. humble and weak

  457. he could not save us.

  458. And yet the Bethlehem king

  459. is both.

  460. The Bethlehem king

  461. is both great

  462. and strong

  463. and humble

  464. and weak.

  465. He is both

  466. a king showing up

  467. with his army

  468. and a baby

  469. born in a manger.

  470. That's the kind

  471. of king that Micah

  472. is promising

  473. for these people.

  474. And so what we need

  475. is a great

  476. and strong

  477. and humble

  478. and weak king

  479. savior shepherd.

  480. One man says this

  481. he is the lion

  482. of Judah

  483. but he's also

  484. the lamb of God.

  485. He is a lion

  486. hearted lamb

  487. but a lamb

  488. like lion.

  489. He's the lion

  490. of Judah

  491. but he's also

  492. the lamb of God.

  493. He's a lion

  494. hearted lamb

  495. but a lamb

  496. like lion.

  497. And so it's not

  498. just good news

  499. that Jesus

  500. is a great king.

  501. It is good news

  502. that he is

  503. our king.

  504. It's not just

  505. good news

  506. that Jesus

  507. is a great king.

  508. It's good news

  509. that he is

  510. our king.

  511. And he's only

  512. able to be

  513. our king

  514. because he

  515. is both.

  516. He's king

  517. of the world

  518. and he also

  519. chose to make

  520. himself a small

  521. child.

  522. The reason he

  523. chose to make

  524. himself a small

  525. child is because

  526. that's the only

  527. way that he

  528. could save us.

  529. He needed

  530. not just to come

  531. and rule

  532. and reign.

  533. That would be

  534. only bad news.

  535. We saw what that

  536. was like in chapter

  537. one.

  538. But also to

  539. suffer and save.

  540. Bethlehem says

  541. both.

  542. Excuse me.

  543. And so he's

  544. great because

  545. he's God.

  546. He's unexpected

  547. because he's

  548. human.

  549. He's great

  550. because he's

  551. the most powerful

  552. king.

  553. And he's

  554. unexpected because

  555. he came for

  556. something much

  557. greater than

  558. political liberation.

  559. The reason

  560. they are experiencing

  561. oppression is

  562. because of

  563. their sin.

  564. Remember

  565. chapters one

  566. through three.

  567. And so this

  568. great king is

  569. going to come

  570. for both.

  571. He is going

  572. to free

  573. them from

  574. the national

  575. and political

  576. forces that

  577. are up against

  578. them.

  579. And he's also

  580. going to free

  581. them from

  582. their own sin.

  583. We find out

  584. verse four,

  585. he is going

  586. to stand and

  587. shepherd his

  588. flock in the

  589. strength of

  590. the Lord.

  591. And of course

  592. we see this

  593. fulfilled in

  594. Jesus.

  595. We don't just

  596. see this

  597. fulfilled in

  598. Jesus in the

  599. sense that Jesus

  600. is born in

  601. Bethlehem.

  602. We also see it

  603. fulfilled in

  604. Jesus because

  605. Jesus tells us

  606. in John chapter

    John 10 chapter mention

  607. 10 that he

  608. is the good

  609. shepherd.

  610. Shepherds are

  611. like kings.

  612. David, by the

  613. way, was a

  614. shepherd.

  615. He protected

  616. his flock.

  617. He also

  618. nurtured them.

  619. We're told

  620. that it's the

  621. good shepherd

  622. that lays down

  623. his life for

  624. the sheep.

  625. That is the

  626. kind of shepherd

  627. that Jesus is

  628. as our Bethlehem

  629. king.

  630. He is great

  631. and powerful.

  632. And he also

  633. dies for us.

  634. He uses that

  635. to shame the

  636. smart things of

  637. this world.

  638. Dying on a

  639. cross as God

  640. for the sins of

  641. your people is a

  642. Bethlehem move.

  643. That's a

  644. Bethlehem kind of

  645. thing to do.

  646. That's not the

  647. way the Assyrians

  648. would have done

  649. it.

  650. And so it's the

  651. weak things of

  652. this world that

  653. God uses to shame

  654. the strong.

  655. There's a whole

  656. section of the

  657. New Testament

  658. about this.

  659. I'm going to

  660. read a little

  661. bit for you from

  662. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 1 chapter mention

  663. chapter 1.

  664. Because God

  665. talks about this

  666. dynamic that he

  667. is going to use

  668. weak things to

  669. shame strong

  670. things.

  671. He's going to

  672. use Bethlehem

  673. kind of things to

  674. shame great

  675. rulers.

  676. 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 1:18

  677. chapter 1

  678. verse 18.

  679. For the word of

  680. the cross is

  681. folly to those

  682. who are perishing,

  683. but to us who

  684. are being saved

  685. it is the power

  686. of God.

  687. In other words,

  688. as one man has

  689. put it, God

  690. takes an

  691. instrument of

  692. torture, the

  693. cross, and he

  694. uses it as an

  695. instrument of

  696. salvation.

  697. He uses

  698. something foolish

  699. and weak, a

  700. cross, to bring

  701. about something

  702. great and

  703. powerful.

  704. Then in verse

  705. 20, where is the

  706. one who is wise?

  707. Where is the

  708. scribe?

  709. Where is the

  710. debater of this

  711. age?

  712. Has not God

  713. made foolish?

  714. For since in

  715. the wisdom of

  716. God the world

  717. did not know

  718. God through

  719. wisdom, it

  720. pleased God

  721. through the

  722. folly of what

  723. we preach to

  724. save those who

  725. believe.

  726. For Jews demand

  727. signs and Greeks

  728. seek wisdom, but

  729. we preach Christ

  730. crucified, a

  731. stumbling block to

  732. Jews and folly to

  733. Gentiles.

  734. But to those who

  735. are called both

  736. Jews and Greeks,

  737. Christ the power

  738. of God and the

  739. wisdom of God.

  740. For verse 25,

  741. the foolishness

  742. of God is

  743. wiser than men

  744. and the weakness

  745. of God is

  746. stronger than

  747. men.

  748. We might say

  749. the foolishness

  750. of God becoming

  751. man in a manger

  752. is wiser than

  753. men and the

  754. weakness of that

  755. little baby is

  756. stronger than

  757. men.

  758. The gospel, the

  759. news that Jesus

  760. has come and

  761. died for us as

  762. God made man,

  763. strength is

  764. Bethlehem logic.

  765. It is the

  766. weakness of this

  767. world used for

  768. strength.

  769. Finally, we find

  770. out what happens

  771. when we have a

  772. Bethlehem king, a

  773. king who is both

  774. great and mighty

  775. and powerful, the

  776. David-like king, and

  777. also unexpected and

  778. humble and weak.

  779. What does that king

  780. lead to?

  781. Verse 5, he shall

  782. be their peace.

  783. The people in

  784. this passage who

  785. have Assyria coming

  786. up against them are

  787. not secure, but

  788. they will be one

  789. day.

  790. We who live in

  791. this world now at

  792. the end of 2019

  793. are not fully and

  794. finally secure, but

  795. we will be one

  796. day.

  797. We see it in part

  798. with Jesus at his

  799. birth in Bethlehem,

  800. and we will see

  801. it in full at his

  802. second coming when

  803. he comes to bring

  804. in his kingdom and

  805. answer our prayers

  806. that he will make

  807. his kingdom on

  808. earth as it is in

  809. heaven.

  810. And so he shall be

  811. our peace.

  812. He will be our

  813. peace with God,

  814. saving us from

  815. sin.

  816. And he will be our

  817. peace from God,

  818. the political peace

  819. that the folks in

  820. this passage long for

  821. and wait for in

  822. hope.

  823. And so he's

  824. going to bring us

  825. true and full and

  826. final peace.

  827. Sometimes it's hard

  828. to wrap our minds

  829. around what peace

  830. looks like.

  831. There's a phrase that

  832. people will throw

  833. around at Christmas

  834. saying, you know,

  835. Jesus brings peace

  836. in our hearts, and

  837. he certainly does.

  838. But he also brings

  839. peace in this world.

  840. And as I think about

  841. peace, and I'll close

  842. with this, I'm

  843. reminded of a

  844. Peanuts cartoon.

  845. I was still alive,

  846. by the way, when

  847. Charles Schultz died.

  848. I'm probably the last

  849. of a generation

  850. that remembers him.

  851. I remember one of

  852. the things my

  853. brothers and I love

  854. to do is grab the

  855. cartoons from the

  856. weekend, the

  857. weekend Washington

  858. Post.

  859. When we subscribed,

  860. that was what we

  861. tried to secure and

  862. compete over.

  863. And there's one where

  864. Charlie Brown talks

  865. about security.

  866. He's talking with

  867. Peppermint Patty.

  868. And she says this,

  869. Lately, everything

  870. seems to bother me.

  871. Charlie Brown, how

  872. do you mean?

  873. Peppermint Patty, what

  874. do you think security

  875. is, Chuck?

  876. This is what Charlie

  877. Brown says.

  878. Security.

  879. Security is sleeping

  880. in the back seat of

  881. the car.

  882. When you're a little

  883. kid, and you've been

  884. somewhere with your

  885. mom and dad, and it's

  886. night, and you're

  887. riding home in the

  888. car, you can sleep in

  889. the back seat.

  890. You don't have to worry

  891. about anything.

  892. Your mom and dad are in

  893. the front seat, and

  894. they do all the

  895. worrying.

  896. They take care of

  897. everything.

  898. Peppermint Patty says

  899. this, that's real

  900. neat.

  901. Charlie Brown replies,

  902. but it doesn't last.

  903. Suddenly, you're grown

  904. up, and it can never be

  905. that way again.

  906. Suddenly, it's over,

  907. and you'll never get to

  908. sleep in the back seat

  909. again.

  910. Never.

  911. Peppermint Patty,

  912. Never?

  913. Charlie Brown,

  914. absolutely never.

  915. Peppermint Patty,

  916. hold my hand, Chuck.

  917. Why does it matter that

  918. Jesus was born in

  919. Bethlehem?

  920. It matters because he

  921. is the king that brings

  922. us true peace and

  923. security.

  924. We know that when it's

  925. dark, he's the one who

  926. has everything under

  927. control.

  928. We know that we don't

  929. have to worry about

  930. anything because he is

  931. in the front seat, and

  932. he will take care of the

  933. worrying.

  934. He will take care of

  935. everything.

  936. He will be our peace,

  937. and it will last forever.

  938. Why does it matter that

  939. Jesus was born in

  940. Bethlehem?

  941. It matters because he is

  942. a great and mighty king,

  943. and it matters because he's

  944. a humble and a weak king,

  945. and because he's both and

  946. not just one.

  947. He will be our peace.

  948. Please pray with me.

  949. I will be our peace.

  950. I run for you.

  951. You see you soon.

  952. From yours...
