  1. This morning we have a guest preacher, since Matthew is on vacation, I'd like to ask Jeff

  2. Kreisel to come forward.

  3. Jeff is the RUF pastor at the Air Force Academy, and if you would like to know more about his

  4. ministry, I'm sure he would be glad to tell you about it, and he even has a sign-up sheet

  5. out front for his email newsletter, and he also brought swag.

  6. So please welcome Jeff Kreisel.

  7. Good morning, everyone.

  8. My name is Jeff Kreisel.

  9. I'm the RUF campus minister at the Air Force Academy.

  10. I'm excited to be here.

  11. I always love coming to Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church and worshiping with you all and bringing

  12. God's word to God's people here.

  13. So for those who are unfamiliar with RUF, it stands for Reformed University Fellowship.

  14. RUF is the PCA's campus ministry.

  15. We're at 160 campuses, not only nationwide, but globally.

  16. God is doing some amazing things through RUF, and I'd love to tell you more about what he's

  17. doing at the Air Force Academy.

  18. I will talk your ear off if you grab me after the service.

  19. RUF strives to bring the church to the campus because we believe that the campus is in desperate

  20. need of the church.

  21. That is our goal.

  22. That is our hope.

  23. So that is what we are after.

  24. So fun fact, the last time I preached at Cheyenne Mountain was the first Sunday in 2019.

  25. And now I get to preach the last Sunday in 2019.

  26. So my year, your year, I guess, has been bookended with me being here at Cheyenne Mountain.

  27. It's kind of neat.

  28. A lot has happened this past year in my life, in our ministry.

  29. We have made some difficult decisions.

  30. We have faced some very difficult crossroads.

  31. I'm sure you all have been through the same.

  32. As you think back over your 2019, what were some of the difficult decisions that you made

  33. this year?

  34. What were some of the terrifying crossroads that you faced or the roads that you chose

  35. to take?

  36. And have you been pleased with the roads that you have chosen?

  37. Or have your choice has been accompanied by doubt and regret?

  38. Perhaps you started a new job.

  39. You accepted a new job this year.

  40. And it has far exceeded your expectations.

  41. It has been just a godsend.

  42. Or maybe you accepted a job and it has not met any of your expectations.

  43. And it has just drained you.

  44. It has sucked the life out of you and your family and your marriage.

  45. Maybe you bought a new house in 2019.

  46. And you love this new house.

  47. It's perfect.

  48. Or maybe you bought a new house and it is falling apart.

  49. And you're starting to regret that you didn't buy that other house that you were eyeballing.

  50. Or maybe you regret that you bought a house at all.

  51. Maybe in 2019, you stood at the reconciliation crossroads with one of your family or friends.

  52. Perhaps you went down this one road and you pursued reconciliation and they rejected your offer.

  53. And that hurt really bad.

  54. Or maybe you took this other road and you chose not to pursue reconciliation.

  55. You're going to kick that can down the road a little bit, maybe into 2020, which isn't a bad thing.

  56. But which road did you choose?

  57. We choose all sorts of roads day in and day out.

  58. So as you head into 2020, what are some of the crossroads that you're facing?

  59. What are some of the difficult decisions that are driving your New Year's resolutions?

  60. That's one way to find out what crossroads you're facing.

  61. Perhaps you are like me and you are standing at that dreaded weight loss crossroads.

  62. I feel it every year.

  63. You're looking down one road and you see a path that leads to sacrificing your time to work out consistently and to prepare healthy meals.

  64. And there's sacrifice required for that road.

  65. Or you can take this other road, which is comfortable and it's familiar.

  66. You know, it's easy.

  67. You love that road.

  68. But then at the end of the year and your pants are bigger and your waist is larger and you're like, man, I'm going to maybe take that other road in 2021.

  69. You know, maybe you are at a crossroads of a recurring struggle.

  70. A recurring struggle that just won't go away.

  71. Maybe you're struggling with alcohol or with porn or with workaholism or with greed or with materialism and you're tired of it and you're standing at this crossroads and you're wanting to know, you're trying to decide which path should I take.

  72. You look down one road and you're like, this road requires me to have awkward community and vulnerability.

  73. And I have to be honest about my struggles and that's painful.

  74. And I'm not sure if I want to go down that road, even though I know it would be for my good.

  75. Or I can go down this road, which means I'm going to retain a bad habit, something that I hate, but I simultaneously love.

  76. Right.

  77. Which road are you going to choose?

  78. The challenge with any crossroads is that there's pros and cons to whichever way that you go.

  79. There is a cost that we so often are not willing to pay.

  80. Each road looks bumpy.

  81. Each road looks less than ideal.

  82. Some roads lead to uncomfortable lifestyle changes.

  83. Right.

  84. Some roads are marked by the fear of the unknown.

  85. Some roads take us back to the status quo.

  86. And then there are some roads that lead us to places that we know will harm us.

  87. But man, that road looks so enticing.

  88. It's just painted with like fool's gold.

  89. And we want to take that road every chance we get.

  90. What do you do when you are standing at a crossroads and every direction looks terrible?

  91. Or every direction looks like a dead end and you feel stuck?

  92. Are there any other options?

  93. Or are you stuck at that crossroads for another year?

  94. In our passage this morning, the Israelites find themselves at a terrifying crossroads.

  95. Every direction looked like a dead end.

  96. It was a dead end.

  97. But God, in his great mercy, he makes a way.

  98. He makes another option.

  99. He paves another road.

  100. And this road goes straight through the chaotic waters of the Red Sea.

  101. And he brings the Israelites from slavery to freedom.

  102. In a moment, he brings them from death to life.

  103. And that's where we are this morning in Exodus 14.

  104. So if you are willing and able, I invite you to stand for the reading of God's word.

  105. We'll be looking at Exodus 14, verses 5 through 22.

    Exodus 14:5–22

  106. And it's somewhat of a long passage.

  107. So bend your knees.

  108. When the king of Egypt was told that the people had fled, the mind of Pharaoh and his servants was changed toward the people.

  109. And they said, What is this that we have done, that we have let Israel go from serving us?

  110. So he made ready his chariot and took his army with him.

  111. And he took 600 chosen chariots and all the other chariots of Egypt with officers over all of them.

  112. And the Lord hardened the heart of Pharaoh, king of Egypt.

  113. And he pursued the people of Israel while the people of Israel were going out defiantly.

  114. The Egyptians pursued them, all Pharaoh's horses and chariots and his horsemen and his army,

  115. and overtook them and camped at the sea by Pahaharoth in front of Baal-zaphon.

  116. When Pharaoh drew near, the people of Israel lifted up their eyes.

  117. And behold, the Egyptians were marching after them, and they feared greatly.

  118. And the people of Israel cried out to the Lord.

  119. They said to Moses, Is it because there are no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness?

  120. What have you done to us in bringing us out of Egypt?

  121. Is not this what we said to you in Egypt?

  122. Leave us alone that we may serve the Egyptians, for it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.

  123. And Moses said to the people, Fear not.

  124. Stand firm and see the salvation of the Lord, which he will work for you today.

  125. For the Egyptians whom you see today, you shall never see again.

  126. The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to be silent.

  127. The Lord said to Moses, Why do you cry to me?

  128. Tell the people of Israel to go forward.

  129. Lift up your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it,

  130. that the people of Israel may go through the sea on dry ground.

  131. And I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians so that they shall go in after them.

  132. And I will get glory over Pharaoh and all his hosts, his chariots and his horsemen.

  133. And the Egyptians shall know that I am the Lord when I have gotten glory over Pharaoh, his chariots and his horsemen.

  134. Then the angel of God, who was going before the host of Israel, moved and went behind them.

  135. And the pillar of cloud moved from before them and stood behind them,

  136. coming between the host of Egypt and the host of Israel.

  137. And there was the cloud and the darkness, and it lit up the night without one coming near the other all night.

  138. Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the Lord drove the sea back by a strong east wind all night

  139. and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided.

  140. And the people of Israel went into the midst of the sea on dry ground,

  141. the waters being a wall to them on their right hand and on their left.

  142. This is the word of the Lord.

  143. Let me pray for us.

  144. Gracious and good Heavenly Father, as we celebrated this Advent season,

  145. the coming of the Messiah, Emmanuel, God incarnate,

  146. we know that you are with us.

  147. We know that you are present.

  148. We pray that we also would be present and attentive to your word this morning.

  149. We pray that you would focus our hearts and our minds on you.

  150. And it's through Christ's name we pray. Amen.

  151. You may be seated.

  152. All right, so in Exodus 14, the Israelites are at this terrifying crossroads.

  153. After the 10th plague, the 10th plague was the one in which the Lord passed through Egypt,

  154. and he killed all of the firstborn sons who were not protected,

  155. who weren't sheltered under the blood of the Passover lamb.

  156. Okay, the blood of the Passover lamb acted as a substitutionary sacrifice for them

  157. so that God could pass over.

  158. The Egyptians, though, were not spared.

  159. They had had enough of these plagues.

  160. They had had enough of the Israelites.

  161. You see, the pros were now way down here,

  162. and the cons now outweighed the pros by a landslide.

  163. Okay, and the Egyptians were like, we're done with the Israelites.

  164. Take what you want.

  165. They gave them this large spoil, and they kicked them out of Egypt.

  166. But not much time passes.

  167. The dust finally settles, and Pharaoh, he once again, he regrets his decision.

  168. He realizes that he just pushed out their entire slave labor force out of their nation.

  169. And so he gathers his massive, powerful, superpower army,

  170. and he takes, it says, 600 chosen chariots, and then all the rest of his chariots.

  171. So he has a slew of chariots.

  172. And keep in mind, chariots were like the killing machines of the ancient Near East, right?

  173. They would be akin to like F-22s or F-35s or Bradleys or Apaches or whatnot.

  174. These were like the killing machines of the day.

  175. And he takes all of them, and they start chasing after 2 million Israelite,

  176. essentially peasants, children and elderly included.

  177. So keep in mind, the Israelites aren't going on some casual ruck march out of Egypt, okay?

  178. This is a hard, hard march, okay?

  179. They are carrying their children.

  180. They are caring for their elderly.

  181. They are dragging along all of their possessions.

  182. And they just got a lot of new possessions when they were pushed out of Egypt.

  183. They got all sorts of gold and heavy items.

  184. They were guiding all of their livestock through a desert, mind you, okay?

  185. This was not an easy hike.

  186. They were easy pickings for the Egyptian army.

  187. And so the Israelites are at a crossroads.

  188. They really only have four options, four directions they can go.

  189. They can try to run along the shore.

  190. They can go left or right.

  191. But the Egyptians are in chariots.

  192. And so eventually the Israelites are going to be caught,

  193. and they're going to be forced back into slavery, okay?

  194. So left and right don't look like great options, okay?

  195. Another option is they can do an about-face,

  196. and they can try to take on the Egyptians head-on, right?

  197. They can try to go toe-to-toe with this great superpower.

  198. But they're a superpower.

  199. And the Israelites are essentially a bunch of non-military peasants.

  200. How were they going to defeat this large military?

  201. So going backwards didn't seem like a great option either.

  202. The only other option they had was to go forward

  203. and try to swim across the Red Sea

  204. with all of their stuff, with all their children,

  205. with all of their livestock.

  206. And keep in mind, back in the ancient world,

  207. swimming wasn't exactly a popular pastime.

  208. Most biblical historians,

  209. they believe that very few in the ancient world

  210. were even able to swim.

  211. So if they had even tried that option,

  212. they would have eventually drowned, okay?

  213. They were in quite the pickle.

  214. They were stuck.

  215. They couldn't go left, right, back, or forwards.

  216. They couldn't fight their way out.

  217. They couldn't run away,

  218. and they couldn't swim their way out of this.

  219. They couldn't save themselves.

  220. And so the Israelites did the only thing that they could do.

  221. That is this.

  222. They cry out to God.

  223. They pray to God.

  224. Now, while this was the right thing to do,

  225. okay, it was right for them at this crossroads

  226. to pray to God,

  227. but they do it in a really twisted way.

  228. You see, instead of crying out to God for deliverance,

  229. they cry out at God with accusations of abandonment.

  230. And there's a massive difference between the two here.

  231. They cry out at God for abandoning them.

  232. And they start condemning God through their mediator, Moses.

  233. And they say, essentially,

  234. what have you done bringing us out of Egypt?

  235. Life was good back in Egypt.

  236. Don't you remember, Moses,

  237. how good life was back in Egypt?

  238. Yeah, they were harsh to us,

  239. and they treated us like lowly slaves.

  240. And oh, yeah, of course,

  241. there was the whole incident

  242. where they were throwing our children

  243. into the Nile River.

  244. But that was on us.

  245. We were the ones being obstinate and disruptive.

  246. We'll be better this time.

  247. We'll go back to slavery

  248. where it's familiar and safe,

  249. as if it's safe at all,

  250. to go back to slavery.

  251. And we'll be better this time, right?

  252. And then they say this sarcastic line.

  253. They say, is it because there are no graves in Egypt

  254. that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness?

  255. That's such a low blow, right,

  256. to Moses, who has just delivered them

  257. from this wicked, terrible situation.

  258. You see what has happened here.

  259. The crossroads in which they are standing,

  260. the fear that they are experiencing

  261. has caused them to become delusional.

  262. They're starting to rewrite history,

  263. their own history.

  264. If you recall, the night before Exodus 14,

  265. the Israelites are celebrating

  266. the fact that God has delivered them,

  267. that he has given them this Passover lamb

  268. to cover and atone for their sins,

  269. that he was going to make a way for them

  270. from slavery to freedom.

  271. They're worshiping God.

  272. They're dancing.

  273. And now they're wanting to go back to slavery in Egypt

  274. because the fear they're experiencing

  275. at this crossroads.

  276. They're looking down all of the roads

  277. and each road appears to be a dead end

  278. and their present fear has caused them

  279. to forget their past oppression.

  280. All right?

  281. They have short-term memories

  282. when it comes to the oppression

  283. they experienced before.

  284. And the same is so often true for us.

  285. Like the Israelites,

  286. when we find ourselves

  287. at difficult crossroads,

  288. where difficult decisions have to be made,

  289. or when an old oppressor

  290. or an old struggle

  291. or an old bad habit

  292. is like hot on our tails,

  293. wanting to enslave us,

  294. wanting to bring us down,

  295. wanting to allure us back

  296. to our old behaviors,

  297. our old way of life.

  298. We are prone to look back

  299. at our old way of life

  300. and think to ourselves,

  301. it wasn't that bad.

  302. It wasn't that bad.

  303. But it was that bad, right?

  304. It was that bad.

  305. We just so quickly forget how bad it was.

  306. We think that our old life,

  307. the familiar,

  308. can satisfy us

  309. when we know in our heart

  310. that it won't.

  311. You see, your old life

  312. wants you to forget

  313. how bad it was before.

  314. It wants you to feel like

  315. there is no escape.

  316. It wants you to feel like

  317. your only option is to concede

  318. and start walking backwards.

  319. It wants you to feel hopeless.

  320. It wants you to feel stuck.

  321. But don't forget

  322. what life was like before.

  323. Don't forget

  324. what the oppression

  325. that you experienced before.

  326. My friends,

  327. there is no joy

  328. in jealousy.

  329. Ever.

  330. Why would you go back to that?

  331. There is no rest in rage.

  332. There is no peace and panic

  333. and there is no love and lust.

  334. Never.

  335. Right?

  336. Why would we go back to that?

  337. We know these things,

  338. but when we find ourselves

  339. at crossroads,

  340. like in Exodus 14,

  341. our fear,

  342. it causes us to forget

  343. our past oppression

  344. and then go back to it.

  345. But I want to remind you

  346. that at these crossroads,

  347. you aren't stuck.

  348. Okay?

  349. You can look to the left,

  350. you can look to the right,

  351. you can look backwards

  352. and forwards,

  353. and they may all look

  354. like dead ends.

  355. But thankfully,

  356. it goes to an out-of-the-box thinker.

  357. And in Exodus 14,

  358. we see him graciously pave

  359. another road

  360. that takes them

  361. straight through the sea.

  362. Verse 13 and 14,

  363. Moses says these words.

  364. He says,

  365. Fear not,

  366. stand firm,

  367. and see the salvation

  368. of the Lord,

  369. which he will work for you.

  370. The Lord will fight for you,

  371. and all you have to be

  372. is silent.

  373. In other words,

  374. stand still

  375. and watch God work.

  376. You can't save yourself.

  377. You are stuck.

  378. But I can save you.

  379. Right?

  380. He's saying,

  381. I'm going to get you through this.

  382. I'm going to make another way.

  383. All you have to do

  384. is just stand still

  385. and be silent.

  386. But here's the thing,

  387. we don't like standing still

  388. and being silent.

  389. Right?

  390. Especially when it comes

  391. to our salvation.

  392. We feel like we have

  393. to contribute something,

  394. anything,

  395. to our salvation.

  396. standing still

  397. and being silent

  398. requires us

  399. to trust in God

  400. more than ourselves.

  401. It requires us

  402. to relinquish

  403. the one thing

  404. that we hold so dear,

  405. and that is

  406. our sense of control.

  407. Right?

  408. We have to believe

  409. that God knows

  410. what's best for us.

  411. We have to believe

  412. that God is for us,

  413. that he is with us,

  414. and that he loves us

  415. more than we can fathom.

  416. We have to believe

  417. that serving God

  418. is more life-giving,

  419. it is more satisfying,

  420. than serving Pharaoh.

  421. Everyone serves something

  422. or someone, right?

  423. Everyone serves a Pharaoh.

  424. My Pharaoh may be

  425. different than your Pharaoh,

  426. but it's the exact same Pharaoh.

  427. Right?

  428. It's a Pharaoh

  429. who wants to pull you back

  430. into an old way,

  431. an old pattern,

  432. an old habit.

  433. It's a Pharaoh

  434. who demands

  435. your full allegiance,

  436. and then when you try

  437. to escape,

  438. he hunts you down

  439. and tries to put

  440. the shackles back on.

  441. Now, what is your Pharaoh

  442. this morning?

  443. What Pharaoh

  444. are you prone to serve?

  445. To rephrase this question,

  446. what do you serve

  447. to give your life meaning?

  448. If it isn't God,

  449. it's a Pharaoh, okay?

  450. And it can be

  451. a very good thing

  452. that we turn into God things,

  453. and when we do that,

  454. those things become

  455. worthless things.

  456. All right?

  457. Is it your job?

  458. Is that the thing

  459. that you are serving

  460. to give your life meaning?

  461. Is it your reputation?

  462. Is it your hobbies?

  463. Is it your family?

  464. Is it your friends?

  465. Is it your looks?

  466. Is it your parents' approval?

  467. What is it

  468. that you serve

  469. to give your life meaning?

  470. After winning

  471. an Academy Award,

  472. Reese Witherspoon,

  473. she held her new trophy

  474. tightly to her chest,

  475. and she said these words.

  476. She said,

  477. I'm just trying to matter,

  478. and you have all

  479. made me feel tonight

  480. that I might have

  481. accomplished that.

  482. You see what

  483. Reese Witherspoon has done?

  484. She has made the opinions

  485. of others her Pharaoh.

  486. She was serving them

  487. to get meaning.

  488. Madonna says this

  489. about her life.

  490. She said,

  491. my drive in life

  492. comes from the fear

  493. of being mediocre.

  494. I push past

  495. one spell of it

  496. and discover myself

  497. as a special human being.

  498. But then I feel

  499. that I am mediocre

  500. unless I do something else,

  501. because even though

  502. I have become somebody,

  503. I still have to prove

  504. that I am somebody,

  505. and my struggle

  506. has never ended,

  507. and I guess

  508. it never will.

  509. She's swimming upstream.

  510. She's serving a Pharaoh

  511. that can't meet her needs.

  512. Exodus 14 shows us

  513. that the struggle

  514. that she faces,

  515. the upstream swimming,

  516. it can end.

  517. We aren't stuck

  518. at this crossroads,

  519. because God has graciously

  520. entered the crossfire.

  521. Did you see this

  522. in verse 19,

  523. what God does?

  524. Verse 19 says,

  525. then the angel of God

  526. who was going before

  527. the host of Israel

  528. moved and went

  529. behind them,

  530. coming between

  531. the host of Egypt

  532. and the host of Israel.

  533. I don't know why

  534. we missed that.

  535. We kind of glossed

  536. over that point.

  537. That God moved

  538. from being in the front

  539. to going to the rear

  540. to shield and defend them

  541. from the Egyptian superpower.

  542. You see,

  543. God stands between

  544. the Israelites

  545. and their enemies.

  546. He says to Pharaoh

  547. with that action,

  548. if you want to attack,

  549. if you want to condemn

  550. my people,

  551. you have to go

  552. through me first.

  553. You have to go through me

  554. and good luck with that.

  555. Right?

  556. And he says the same thing

  557. to your Pharaohs as well.

  558. He says,

  559. if you want to get

  560. to my child,

  561. if you want to condemn

  562. my child,

  563. you have to go

  564. through me first.

  565. And my friends,

  566. that is some really,

  567. really good news.

  568. That we have a God

  569. who shields us

  570. from our enemies.

  571. Now this may surprise you,

  572. but my favorite part

  573. about being a campus minister,

  574. it isn't going snowboarding

  575. with my cadets

  576. or beating them

  577. and bowling.

  578. They're all so terrible

  579. at bowling.

  580. It isn't even officiating

  581. their wedding ceremonies,

  582. which is like

  583. such a joy.

  584. My favorite part

  585. about being a campus minister

  586. is when a cadet

  587. comes to me

  588. with tears

  589. streaking down their face

  590. with their head

  591. hanging low

  592. because they feel

  593. the weight of their guilt

  594. and their shame

  595. and I get to be the one

  596. who reminds them

  597. of Romans 8 verse 1.

    Romans 8:1

  598. There is now

  599. no condemnation

  600. for those who are

  601. in Christ Jesus.

  602. I get to say that to them

  603. over and over

  604. and over again

  605. to press that truth

  606. into their soul

  607. so they believe it.

  608. There is now

  609. no condemnation

  610. for those

  611. who are in Christ Jesus.

  612. In other words,

  613. when God stands

  614. between you and Pharaoh

  615. and he says,

  616. you can't condemn my child,

  617. he is saying

  618. to your sin,

  619. you can't condemn them.

  620. He's saying

  621. to other people's opinions

  622. of you,

  623. you can't condemn

  624. my child.

  625. He's saying

  626. to you

  627. when you try

  628. to condemn yourself,

  629. you can't condemn

  630. my child

  631. because there is

  632. no condemnation

  633. because I shield

  634. them from it.

  635. The other thing

  636. that God does here

  637. is he not only

  638. shields them

  639. from Pharaoh

  640. but his deliverance

  641. is decisive.

  642. Right?

  643. Did you notice this?

  644. In Romans 8 verse 1

    Romans 8:1

  645. it says,

  646. there is now

  647. no condemnation.

  648. I love that word now.

  649. I love that Paul

  650. threw that word in there.

  651. That present tense reality

  652. that we now experience

  653. no condemnation.

  654. As Christians,

  655. we live

  656. in an objective

  657. no condemnation reality.

  658. Even if

  659. we live our lives

  660. as if we are still

  661. under condemnation,

  662. we're free from it.

  663. Okay?

  664. In Exodus 14,

  665. the Israelites'

  666. deliverance

  667. was decisive.

  668. It was a now

  669. deliverance.

  670. Okay?

  671. In one moment

  672. they were doomed.

  673. In one moment

  674. they're on this side

  675. of the Red Sea.

  676. They're on the

  677. condemnation side.

  678. And then in the next moment

  679. they're on this side

  680. of the Red Sea.

  681. They're on the

  682. justification side.

  683. In one moment

  684. it happens like that.

  685. It was a decisive shift

  686. from being in slavery

  687. to being in freedom,

  688. from being under death

  689. to being in life.

  690. And this is the paradigm

  691. of our salvation as well.

  692. The Red Sea

  693. is our paradigm.

  694. Okay?

  695. When we cross over

  696. decisively from life,

  697. from death to life.

  698. In Christianity,

  699. God brings us

  700. from death

  701. into life

  702. in a decisive act.

  703. every other religion

  704. says that justification,

  705. it's the process,

  706. it's being right

  707. with God,

  708. becoming right

  709. with God.

  710. Justification

  711. is a process

  712. in every other

  713. religion

  714. except for

  715. Christianity.

  716. Okay?

  717. In every other religion

  718. it says,

  719. do this

  720. and do this

  721. and do this.

  722. Follow all these rules

  723. and regulations

  724. and maybe you have

  725. what it takes.

  726. Maybe you're strong enough

  727. to earn your way

  728. into heaven

  729. or nirvana

  730. or enlightenment.

  731. This is what

  732. they essentially say.

  733. They say,

  734. okay,

  735. you can't go left,

  736. you can't go right,

  737. you can't go back.

  738. So start swimming

  739. even though you can't swim.

  740. Like how cruel

  741. do you have to be

  742. to like throw someone

  743. into water

  744. and say,

  745. swim your way to shore

  746. when they can't swim.

  747. That's essentially

  748. what every religion does.

  749. every religion

  750. entails

  751. telling its followers,

  752. try harder.

  753. Keep trying.

  754. It's on you.

  755. And as a result,

  756. in those systems,

  757. there is never

  758. any rest.

  759. There's never

  760. any assurance

  761. of salvation

  762. because you never know

  763. if you've done enough,

  764. if you've swam far enough.

  765. You never know

  766. if you've reached the shore.

  767. Every religion

  768. says start swimming.

  769. When Dr. Martin Lloyd-Jones,

  770. one of my favorite theologians,

  771. when he would,

  772. he would want to figure out

  773. where somebody stood spiritually,

  774. he wouldn't beat around the bush.

  775. He wouldn't overcomplicate evangelism.

  776. He would just ask him this question.

  777. He said,

  778. are you a Christian?

  779. And if their response

  780. was,

  781. well,

  782. I'm trying,

  783. Dr. Martin Lloyd-Jones

  784. would go on to explain

  785. that their answer

  786. indicated that they had no idea

  787. what Christianity

  788. was all about.

  789. What makes one a Christian

  790. is not a change in effort,

  791. but a change in status, right?

  792. It's your status

  793. that changes your effort.

  794. It's not your effort

  795. that changes your status.

  796. We can't get that backwards.

  797. This status change

  798. is decisive, right?

  799. On my wedding day,

  800. I went from being

  801. not married

  802. to married

  803. in a moment.

  804. My marital status

  805. changed

  806. in a decisive declaration,

  807. I now pronounce you

  808. husband and wife.

  809. In that moment,

  810. my life changed.

  811. Something decisive

  812. had changed

  813. in my status.

  814. Now,

  815. what if someone

  816. came up to me

  817. 12 years later

  818. and asked,

  819. hey Jeff,

  820. are you married?

  821. And I said,

  822. well,

  823. I'm trying.

  824. That'd probably be

  825. a very confusing

  826. response for them

  827. to hear,

  828. and if my wife

  829. was overhearing,

  830. she'd probably

  831. smack me upside

  832. the top of my head.

  833. There's no

  834. I'm trying

  835. in marriage.

  836. You are either married

  837. or you aren't married.

  838. There's no

  839. like middle ground

  840. called

  841. I'm trying.

  842. Okay?

  843. And likewise,

  844. you are either

  845. a Christian

  846. or you aren't

  847. a Christian.

  848. You're either

  849. on this side

  850. of the Red Sea

  851. or you're on

  852. this side

  853. of the Red Sea.

  854. You're either

  855. on the condemnation

  856. side

  857. or you're on

  858. the justification

  859. side.

  860. There is no

  861. I'm trying

  862. middle ground.

  863. The I'm trying

  864. middle ground

  865. is really called

  866. lost.

  867. Through faith

  868. in Christ,

  869. you cross over

  870. from death

  871. to life.

  872. You cross over

  873. from being

  874. in Pharaoh's

  875. kingdom

  876. and under

  877. his rule

  878. and reign

  879. to being

  880. under God's

  881. kingdom,

  882. under God's

  883. rule and reign.

  884. When you cross

  885. over,

  886. you go from

  887. being out

  888. of God's

  889. family

  890. to being

  891. in God's

  892. family

  893. in a moment

  894. and you're

  895. in that family

  896. forever.

  897. You cross over

  898. from being

  899. under God's

  900. curse

  901. to being

  902. under God's

  903. blessing.

  904. Have you

  905. crossed over?

  906. are you

  907. in God's

  908. family?

  909. Are you

  910. a citizen

  911. of God's

  912. kingdom?

  913. Are you

  914. a part

  915. of his

  916. church,

  917. Christ's

  918. bride?

  919. I pray

  920. that you

  921. are.

  922. Have you

  923. crossed

  924. over?

  925. Listen,

  926. you don't

  927. cross over

  928. because of

  929. the quantity

  930. or the

  931. quality of

  932. your faith.

  933. You cross

  934. over because

  935. of the

  936. object of

  937. your faith.

  938. The object

  939. of our

  940. faith being

  941. the one

  942. who can

  943. part the

  944. waves,

  945. the one

  946. who is

  947. gracious,

  948. when we

  949. are

  950. faithless,

  951. the one

  952. who stands

  953. between us

  954. and Pharaoh

  955. and acts

  956. as our

  957. shield and

  958. defender.

  959. It's the

  960. object of

  961. our faith

  962. that matters.

  963. In Exodus

  964. 14, it

  965. shows us

  966. that crossing

  967. over from

  968. one side

  969. to the

  970. other, it's

  971. by God's

  972. grace alone.

  973. In that

  974. verse, it

  975. says,

  976. fear not,

  977. see the

  978. Lord's

  979. salvation,

  980. that he

  981. will work

  982. for you.

  983. Look, it

  984. wasn't long

  985. ago.

  986. It was

  987. probably like,

  988. I don't

  989. know, a

  990. few minutes,

  991. 30 minutes,

  992. an hour or

  993. so before

  994. the seas

  995. part, that

  996. the Israelites

  997. are accusing

  998. God of

  999. abandoning

  1000. them.

  1001. They're

  1002. essentially

  1003. mocking God

  1004. and mocking

  1005. his mediator.

  1006. They're

  1007. demonstrating

  1008. how faithless

  1009. they truly

  1010. are.

  1011. Faith wasn't

  1012. exactly the

  1013. Israelites'

  1014. strongest

  1015. attribute.

  1016. Right?

  1017. But get

  1018. this, they

  1019. still crossed

  1020. over.

  1021. over.

  1022. They still

  1023. crossed

  1024. over, and

  1025. they crossed

  1026. over with

  1027. all of their

  1028. mess, with

  1029. all of their

  1030. doubts, with

  1031. all of their

  1032. struggles, and

  1033. guess what?

  1034. God still held

  1035. back the

  1036. water.

  1037. Even though

  1038. each Israelite

  1039. had a

  1040. different quality

  1041. of faith,

  1042. they were

  1043. all equally

  1044. saved.

  1045. Likewise, in

  1046. Christianity, you

  1047. cross over with

  1048. all of your

  1049. mess.

  1050. you cross

  1051. over with

  1052. all your

  1053. doubts, with

  1054. all your

  1055. struggles.

  1056. You don't

  1057. have to

  1058. clean yourself

  1059. up first.

  1060. You don't

  1061. have to

  1062. prove yourself

  1063. worthy.

  1064. You don't

  1065. have to

  1066. swim a

  1067. little bit

  1068. first.

  1069. As we're

  1070. going to

  1071. see next

  1072. Sunday, I

  1073. get to be

  1074. here with

  1075. y'all for

  1076. two weeks

  1077. straight, which

  1078. is awesome.

  1079. This week, we're

  1080. really focusing

  1081. on justification.

  1082. Next week, we're

  1083. going to focus

  1084. on sanctification.

  1085. Next week, we're

  1086. going to see

  1087. that until

  1088. you're on the

  1089. justification

  1090. side of the

  1091. Red Sea, the

  1092. sanctification

  1093. process cannot

  1094. begin.

  1095. But here's

  1096. the thing.

  1097. You can't

  1098. cross over the

  1099. sea on your

  1100. own.

  1101. And we know

  1102. it, but we

  1103. try so hard to

  1104. get across.

  1105. To get across, you

  1106. need a mediator.

  1107. You need someone

  1108. who's going to

  1109. obey God's

  1110. word and who's

  1111. going to part

  1112. the waters and

  1113. is going to

  1114. make a way

  1115. when there was

  1116. no way before.

  1117. You need someone

  1118. who would be

  1119. faithful for

  1120. you.

  1121. You see, when

  1122. the Israelites

  1123. were standing at

  1124. this crossroads

  1125. and the Egyptians

  1126. are right on,

  1127. like they're hot

  1128. on their tail,

  1129. their first

  1130. reaction, it's

  1131. like their

  1132. natural response

  1133. was to start

  1134. accusing God,

  1135. to start blaming

  1136. God for

  1137. abandoning them.

  1138. They essentially

  1139. say, you did

  1140. this to us.

  1141. Like some gods

  1142. you are.

  1143. You brought us

  1144. out of Egypt

  1145. just to die in

  1146. the wilderness.

  1147. We'd rather

  1148. serve Pharaoh

  1149. than you.

  1150. That's what

  1151. they say to

  1152. the God of

  1153. the universe

  1154. who just

  1155. delivered them

  1156. from Egypt.

  1157. And how does

  1158. God respond to

  1159. their faithlessness?

  1160. He turns to

  1161. Moses, the one

  1162. person who was

  1163. faithful, the one

  1164. person who wasn't

  1165. accusing God of

  1166. abandoning them,

  1167. the one person

  1168. who was faithful

  1169. throughout this

  1170. process, and he

  1171. rebukes Moses on

  1172. behalf of the

  1173. Israelites'

  1174. faithlessness.

  1175. The one person

  1176. who didn't

  1177. deserve to be

  1178. rebuked was

  1179. rebuked because

  1180. of his role as

  1181. their mediator, as

  1182. their representative.

  1183. And as a result,

  1184. he essentially

  1185. takes upon

  1186. himself the

  1187. Israelites'

  1188. faithlessness, and

  1189. he gives them his

  1190. faithfulness.

  1191. He gives them the

  1192. favor that God has

  1193. bestowed on him

  1194. so that he could

  1195. part the waves and

  1196. that they could walk

  1197. on dry ground.

  1198. Moses was a great

  1199. prophet, but we

  1200. know on this side

  1201. of the cross that

  1202. Moses was ultimately

  1203. a foretype of a

  1204. greater prophet who

  1205. would bring about an

  1206. infinitely greater

  1207. redemption.

  1208. It was the night

  1209. before Jesus'

  1210. crucifixion, and he

  1211. retreated to the

  1212. Garden of

  1213. Gethsemane, and he

  1214. found himself at the

  1215. most terrifying

  1216. crossroads.

  1217. Moses.

  1218. His enemies

  1219. surrounded him.

1220. In a sense, he was

  1221. stuck.

1222. He was boxed in, but

  1223. unlike the Israelites,

1224. Jesus had the power to

  1225. save himself.

1226. This was the man who

  1227. fed the 5,000.

  1228. He created nothing.

  1229. He created something

  1230. from nothing, right?

1231. This is the guy who

  1232. walked on water, who

  1233. healed the lame,

  1234. healed the blind,

  1235. who raised people

  1236. from the dead and

  1237. cast out demons.

  1238. That's how powerful

  1239. Jesus is.

  1240. Jesus could have

  1241. Thanos snapped

1242. all of the, all of

  1243. his enemies

  1244. out of existence.

  1245. He could have

  1246. snapped them into

  1247. dust, but that

  1248. wasn't the road that

  1249. he chose.

  1250. Instead, he took the

1251. road that led to a

  1252. cross where he would

  1253. die in our place.

  1254. You see, in

  1255. Gethsemane, Jesus

  1256. cried out to God.

  1257. But unlike the

  1258. Israelites who cried

1259. out to God in an

  1260. accusatory way, Jesus

1261. cries out to God in

  1262. this faith-saturated

  1263. prayer in which he

  1264. relinquishes control

1265. and he says, not my

  1266. will, but your will.

1267. And he knew what that

  1268. prayer meant.

  1269. With those words, he

  1270. chose a road that

1271. would take him to a

  1272. cross.

1273. He chose the road of a

  1274. criminal so that we

  1275. could take the road

  1276. of adoption.

1277. He chose the road of

1278. a slave so that we

1279. could take the road of

  1280. freedom.

1281. And he chose the road

1282. of death so that we

1283. could take the road of

  1284. life.

1285. He chose the road that

1286. would lead him into the

  1287. chaotic waters of

  1288. death.

  1289. In order to

  1290. construct an

  1291. imperishable road with

  1292. his blood that leads

  1293. us to new life.

  1294. It's the great

  1295. deliverance story.

  1296. As you head into

  1297. 2020, you have a lot

  1298. of difficult decisions

  1299. to make.

  1300. There aren't many

  1301. guarantees in life, but

1302. this is one thing that

1303. we all know is certain,

1304. and that is that trials

  1305. will come your way.

  1306. The Christian life does

  1307. not promise an easy

  1308. life.

1309. In fact, it promises the

  1310. exact opposite.

  1311. In 2020, you're going

  1312. to face some difficult,

  1313. terrifying crossroads.

1314. You're going to have to

  1315. make decisions that are

  1316. costly.

1317. You're going to have to

  1318. make decisions that are

  1319. painful.

  1320. You're going to make

  1321. decisions that may alter

  1322. the trajectory of your

  1323. life and those around

  1324. you.

  1325. But if you're a

  1326. Christian, when you find

  1327. yourself at these

  1328. difficult crossroads in

1329. 2020, and you feel the

  1330. enemy closing in, you

1331. feel that old way of

1332. life luring you back, I

1333. pray that you will let

  1334. these words that Moses

  1335. said to the Israelites

1336. wash over you again and

  1337. again, day after day.

  1338. Fear not.

1339. Stand firm and see the

  1340. salvation of the Lord,

1341. which he will work for

  1342. you.

  1343. Through faith in Christ,

1344. you are standing not on

  1345. the condemnation side of

  1346. the sea.

1347. And that changes the way

  1348. that you do life.

  1349. You're on the

  1350. justification side.

  1351. So strive to make

1352. decisions in 2020 that is

  1353. in accordance with that

  1354. reality.

  1355. Make decisions that say,

  1356. I believe that my

  1357. justification is true.

1358. You can face the most

  1359. terrifying crossroads with

  1360. confidence and you can

  1361. make very difficult

  1362. decisions because you

1363. know that the God who

1364. sent his only son to die

1365. for you, he will not

  1366. leave or abandon you

  1367. now.

1368. He will make a way

  1369. because that's the kind

1370. of God that he is.

  1371. And that's the promise

1372. that he makes to us each

  1373. and every day.

  1374. Have you crossed over?

  1375. Amen.

1376. Let me pray for us.

  1377. Heavenly Father, we

  1378. thank you for this

  1379. paradigm of salvation

1380. that you have shown us

  1381. in Exodus 14.

  1382. Because of your

  1383. overwhelming grace,

  1384. that you have decided

1385. to free us from a life

  1386. of oppression and bring

1387. us into a life of

  1388. freedom.

  1389. Not because of anything

1390. that we have done, but

  1391. because of your sovereign

  1392. grace alone.

1393. We pray that you would

  1394. continue to shield and

  1395. defend us from the

  1396. enemy, that you would

  1397. keep us from the

  1398. allurements and the

  1399. enticements of this

  1400. world.

  1401. Keep us from Pharaoh's

  1402. grip.

1403. We thank you that you

1404. love us so much that you

1405. would send your only son

1406. to pave a new road with

  1407. his blood into life.

1408. We pray these things in

  1409. Christ's name.

  1410. Amen.
