  1. Most of you, I think you know, Pastor Matthew is on vacation.

  2. And just to reemphasize what Jim Franks mentioned last week, that's normal.

  3. It might be new for our church, but it's normal for a pastor to be released to vacation.

  4. He's enjoying his time with his family in Maryland for the next couple weeks.

  5. And instead, we have Reverend Jeff Kreisel.

  6. He's also a familiar face.

  7. You've seen him a few times before.

  8. And I think enough times that we can bestow on you the title Friend of Cheyenne Mountain.

  9. So I'm going to do that today.

  10. I bestow upon you the title Friend of Cheyenne Mountain.

  11. And many of you have heard from Jeff before, and he's going to be preaching for us today.

  12. His other title is RUF Campus Minister at the U.S. Air Force Academy.

  13. So he's been ministering there for almost two years now?

  14. Almost three years now, yeah, as the campus minister.

  15. So that's a ministry that needs your prayers.

  16. It's a ministry that's growing by leaps and bounds.

  17. But there are a lot of cadets struggling with a lot of college things, normal and abnormal things.

  18. And they have a campus minister in Jeff that needs your prayers.

  19. He also has a sign-up sheet in the back where you can get on his email list and some swag, some reminders of RUF serving invisibly to us way down here in the south, but serving faithfully at the Air Force Academy.

  20. So I'd like to invite Jeff Kreisel up to preach for us this morning.

  21. Thanks, brother.

  22. Hi, well, good morning.

  23. My name is Jeff Kreisel.

  24. I'm excited to be here again with you this morning, bringing God's Word to God's people.

  25. This is the second year in a row where I've had the privilege of bringing God's Word to you on the first Sunday of the year.

  26. So that's kind of a neat thing.

  27. All right, so this morning we are going to return to the book of Exodus, and we're going to see what life looks like after justification.

  28. Okay, we're going to see what life looks like after crossing the Red Sea, after crossing over from death to life.

  29. And as we looked at last week, as I mentioned, life after justification does not get easier, right?

  30. But it does get better.

  31. It's a huge thing that we need to remember.

  32. Our lives may become more difficult on the justification side of the sea, but our lives also become more joyful and more content and more satisfying and more purposeful.

  33. After crossing the Red Sea, the first place that God leads the Israelites is into the wilderness.

  34. He takes them into the wilderness.

  35. It is a scary wilderness.

  36. It's unpredictable.

  37. It is a harsh wilderness.

  38. It is a wilderness where their faith would be tested and stretched through a number of various trials.

  39. He takes them into a wilderness that would appear barren and inhospitable.

  40. But it's also a wilderness where God would continually meet their needs.

  41. God takes them into a wilderness that would expose their doubts and their fears.

  42. But it's also a wilderness where God would comfort and assure his people during the hardest of times.

  43. God takes them into a wilderness in which God himself would sometimes seem absent and distant and removed.

  44. But it's also a wilderness where God would walk with his people every step of the journey.

  45. He takes them into a wilderness.

  46. He takes them into a wilderness that would sometimes feel purposeless.

  47. But it's also a wilderness where God has written purpose into every word of their sanctifying stories.

  48. Are you familiar with this wilderness?

  49. Have you walked through this wilderness?

  50. Have you walked through the valley of the shadow of death?

  51. If you have crossed over, if you have gone through those baptizing waters of the Red Sea,

  52. and you are now on the justification side of salvation, I know that you have.

  53. I am sure that you know that this wilderness often isn't pleasant.

  54. I am also sure that there have been times during your wilderness wanderings,

  55. maybe even this morning, that you have forgotten the purpose of the wilderness.

  56. You have forgotten why God has placed you here.

  57. And you have also probably, during some point in your wilderness wanderings,

  58. you have forgotten where you are headed.

  59. We're not going to forget this morning, we are going to remember where God is leading us.

  60. So buckle up, because we are heading into the sanctifying wilderness of the Christian life this morning.

  61. So I invite you all to please stand for the reading of God's holy, inerrant, and inspired word

  62. that is sufficient for our salvation.

  63. We'll be looking at Exodus 16, verses 1 through 4,

    Exodus 16:1–4

  64. then we're going to bounce and we're going to look at 13 through 21.

  65. They set out from Elam, and all the congregation of the people of Israel came to the wilderness of Sin,

  66. which is between Elam and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month,

  67. after they had departed from the land of Egypt.

  68. And the whole congregation of the people of Israel grumbled against Moses and Aaron in the wilderness.

  69. And the people of Israel said to them,

  70. Would that we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt,

  71. when we sat by the meat pots and ate bread to the full.

  72. For you have brought us into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger.

  73. Then the Lord said to Moses,

  74. Behold, I am about to rain bread from heaven for you.

  75. And the people shall go out and gather a day's portion every day,

  76. that I may test them whether they will walk in my law or not.

  77. In the evening, quail came up and covered the camp,

  78. and in the morning dew lay around the camp.

  79. And when the dew had gone up, there was on the face of the wilderness a fine flake-like thing,

  80. fine as frost on the ground.

  81. When the people of Israel saw it, they said to one another,

  82. What is it?

  83. For they did not know what it was.

  84. And Moses said to them,

  85. It is the bread that the Lord has given you to eat.

  86. This is what the Lord has commanded.

  87. Gather of it, each one of you, as much as he can.

  88. You shall each take an omer according to the number of persons that each of you has in his tent.

  89. And the people of Israel did so.

  90. They gathered some more, some less.

  91. But when they measured it with an omer,

  92. whoever gathered much had nothing left over,

  93. and whoever gathered little had no lack.

  94. Each of them gathered as much as he could eat.

  95. And Moses said to them,

  96. Let no one leave any of it over till the morning.

  97. But they did not listen to Moses.

  98. Some left part of it till the morning, and it bred worms and stank.

  99. And Moses was angry with them.

  100. Morning by morning they gathered it,

  101. each as much as he could eat.

  102. But when the sun grew hot, it melted.

  103. This is the word of our Lord.

  104. Let me pray for us.

  105. Heavenly Father,

  106. you are the author and sustainer of our faith.

  107. And we pray this morning

  108. that you would show us what we do not see,

  109. that you would teach us what we do not know,

  110. that you would convict us where we need to be convicted,

  111. and encourage us where we need to be encouraged.

  112. We pray, Lord,

  113. that you would use my finite words

  114. for your infinite and holy purposes,

  115. for our good and your glory.

  116. In Christ's name we pray.

  117. Amen.

  118. You may be seated.

  119. Amen.

  120. No, I put a,

  121. I put some cover on this.

  122. Nice.

  123. All right, so I want us to,

  124. I want us to see that the wilderness

  125. shows us three things in this passage.

  126. The first thing the wilderness shows us

  127. is that it exposes our fearfulness.

  128. All right?

  129. Our text begins two months

  130. after the Israelites have crossed the Red Sea.

  131. Okay?

  132. After 400 years in Egypt,

  133. in much of that time they were slaves to Pharaoh,

  134. they were finally free.

  135. They were finally under God's rule and reign

  136. instead of Pharaoh.

  137. They are now following God by day and by night

  138. through this wilderness.

  139. And they are headed to the promised land.

  140. They are headed to a land

  141. that is flowing with milk and honey.

  142. They're headed to the land of Canaan.

  143. The picture here is that it is essentially

  144. like a paradise on earth

  145. where God dwells and meets with his people.

  146. He lives with them forever.

  147. They're headed there.

  148. They're headed to the promised land.

  149. But they're not there yet.

  150. They're in the wilderness.

  151. And in the wilderness,

  152. the Israelites have discovered

  153. that God's decisive defeat of Pharaoh

  154. has not solved all of their problems.

  155. In fact, God's decisive defeat of Pharaoh

  156. has introduced a new set of problems

  157. and a new set of challenges.

  158. Challenges that would expose their fear,

  159. their most deep-rooted fears.

  160. And these fears would cause them

  161. to forget their redemption story.

  162. They would start to long to return

  163. to slavery in Egypt.

  164. You see, like us, the Israelites,

  165. they feared a whole lot of things.

  166. Okay?

  167. Our fears are not unique.

  168. Okay?

  169. They feared what we fear.

  170. They feared failure.

  171. They feared isolation.

  172. They feared being alone.

  173. They feared the unknown.

  174. They feared being uncomfortable and insecure.

  175. They feared being unproductive.

  176. They feared a lack of purpose.

  177. They feared feeling shame and guilt.

  178. But more than anything else, like us,

  179. they feared death.

  180. The great enemy.

  181. Not just their great enemy,

  182. our great enemy.

  183. Like the Israelites,

  184. we fear death more than anything else.

  185. And that is what they feared here in Exodus 16.

  186. This is a universal condition.

  187. All right?

  188. It doesn't matter what you believe.

  189. Everybody fears death.

  190. I was reading last night

  191. just kind of some strategies you can employ

  192. to combat your fear of death.

  193. And the number one thing

  194. was to convince yourself

  195. that death is a natural occurrence.

  196. But how is that working out for these people?

  197. They still fear it.

  198. You can't avoid it.

  199. You can't run away from the fear of death

  200. because it isn't natural.

  201. And we all know that it's not natural.

  202. There's something wrong.

  203. It is the great enemy.

  204. We try to escape from it, though.

  205. A few years ago,

  206. I read a story of a guy

  207. who built this beautiful playground

  208. right next to a cemetery.

  209. And it's an amazing park,

  210. and nobody brought their kids

  211. to play at this amazing playground.

  212. And he was kind of stumped.

  213. He was trying to figure out why it is

  214. that no one was bringing their children

  215. to play at this playground.

  216. So he thought outside the box.

  217. He's like, maybe it's the cemetery.

  218. So he built a fence

  219. to block people from seeing the cemetery.

  220. He put the fence up.

  221. And the next day,

  222. the playground was just filled

  223. with laughing children.

  224. We wanted to block it out

  225. because we're uncomfortable

  226. with just being reminded

  227. that death is in our future.

  228. We don't like to grapple with death

  229. and the questions surrounding death.

  230. But we try all sorts of things.

  231. Just look at what our culture does

  232. to combat their fear of death.

  233. People get plastic surgery, right,

  234. late in their life

  235. because they see the aging process,

  236. and they want to combat that

  237. because they know what aging brings.

  238. A lot of people play video games

  239. that are really horrific, right?

  240. They make light of death.

  241. They dumb it down.

  242. They try to view death through a screen,

  243. try to separate themselves from it

  244. because they can't handle the reality of it.

  245. Something that's new in our day and age

  246. is that when a loved one dies,

  247. we've started to have celebration

  248. of life ceremonies

  249. instead of mournful funerals

  250. where we grieve the loss of our loved one

  251. in a healthy way.

  252. We don't want to touch death

  253. with a 10-foot pole.

  254. The same is true with the Israelites.

  255. You see, the irony in Exodus 16

  256. is that the same Israelites

  257. who were so afraid of death

  258. were redeemed.

  259. They were delivered from death's grip

  260. just two months earlier, right?

  261. The Egyptians were about to kill them.

  262. The Israelites were surrounded.

  263. They had nowhere to run and hide.

  264. Death was all but certain,

  265. but then God saves them from death's grip,

  266. and then the Egyptians perish in the sea instead.

  267. The threat to their lives

  268. had already been defeated.

  269. You see the irony here?

  270. It's an irony that is not unique to them.

  271. This irony pervades our lives as well.

  272. In the wilderness,

  273. our greatest fears are exposed,

  274. especially our fear of death.

  275. The wilderness, it causes us to forget

  276. that God has already delivered us

  277. from death's grip.

  278. In the wilderness,

  279. we forget that Jesus already went through death

  280. in order to defeat death

  281. so that we wouldn't be afraid of death.

  282. In the wilderness,

  283. we forget that Jesus has already redeemed us.

  284. We're free.

  285. We don't have to be slaves of fear anymore.

  286. In the wilderness,

  287. the Israelites' fears were exposed.

  288. They didn't know if they would survive this wilderness.

  289. They didn't know if the God who delivered them from Egypt

  290. would also meet their physical daily needs

  291. here in this harsh wilderness.

  292. And I'll be honest,

  293. it's hard to,

  294. you can't blame them, right?

  295. They're in a really rough condition, right?

  296. I have been to some Middle Eastern deserts in my time.

  297. For many months,

  298. I've lived in Iraq and Afghanistan

  299. and Qatar and Kuwait.

  300. And I can tell you all from my experience,

  301. these deserts are not hospitable places, right?

  302. They're dry.

  303. They are hot.

  304. The terrain is rocky and it's really rough.

  305. It is not a hospitable place to be.

  306. And the Israelites have been wandering

  307. in this barren desert,

  308. which is what wilderness is actually translated to mean

  309. in Hebrew.

  310. It means desert.

  311. They've been wandering in this desert

  312. for two months now

  313. and they have many mouths to feed.

  314. And they have very little food

  315. and water and shelter

  316. and they have enemies surrounding them still.

  317. This is a fearful place to be, right?

  318. Why would God do such a thing?

  319. Why would he lead them here?

  320. Why wouldn't God just skip the whole wilderness

  321. wandering stage

  322. and like teleport his people

  323. from the Red Sea to the Promised Land?

  324. Why wouldn't he just rapture them up?

  325. There is purpose to the wilderness.

  326. God purposefully led the Israelites

  327. into the wilderness

  328. in order to expose and defeat their fears

  329. by strengthening their faith.

  330. Okay?

  331. He's going to expose and defeat their fear

  332. by strengthening their faith

  333. in the midst of the wilderness.

  334. My friends,

  335. while the wilderness is always painful,

  336. it is always purposeful.

  337. God understood that it would be easier

  338. to get the Israelites out of Egypt

  339. than to get Egypt out of the Israelites.

  340. Right?

  341. The Israelites have been in Egypt for 400 years.

  342. They have adopted their idolatries.

  343. They have adopted their idols.

  344. They have adopted all of these sins.

  345. God understood this.

  346. And so he uses the wilderness

  347. to sanctify them,

  348. to rid them of these lifelong idolatries

  349. that they had picked up

  350. over the course of 400 years in Egypt.

  351. You see,

  352. while the Israelites were no longer

  353. under the rule of Pharaoh,

  354. they were still living as if they were.

  355. They didn't really believe

  356. that they were free.

  357. They didn't really believe

  358. that God was with them,

  359. that God was for them,

  360. that he loved them more

  361. than they could fathom.

  362. They didn't really believe

  363. that they could live by faith

  364. instead of by fear.

  365. What about you?

  366. Do you believe that God is with you

  367. and that he loves you more

  368. than you can fathom?

  369. Truly, do you believe that?

  370. If you do,

  371. then why are you still living

  372. like a slave to fear?

  373. Do you believe that you are

  374. who God says that you are?

  375. Do you believe truly

  376. that you are a beloved child of God?

  377. If you do,

  378. then why are you still living

  379. like an orphan?

  380. When Moses and Aaron

  381. confronted Pharaoh

  382. for the first time,

  383. do you remember

  384. what God told Moses

  385. to say to Pharaoh?

  386. He told him to say this.

  387. He said,

  388. Israel is my firstborn son,

  389. and I say to you,

  390. let my son go

  391. that he may serve me.

  392. These are family terms

  393. that God is using.

  394. He's describing himself

  395. as their father,

  396. and he is their child

  397. because they were,

  398. because of the covenant

  399. that God made with Abraham.

  400. The Israelites were

  401. God's covenant adopted children.

  402. God was their loving father,

  403. and he was with them,

  404. and he was for them,

  405. and if God was for them,

  406. who could be against them?

  407. If God was with them,

  408. what could they fear?

  409. Listen,

  410. in order to get Egypt

  411. out of you,

  412. in order to be free from fear,

  413. in order to be who you are,

  414. you have to remember

  415. who God says that you are.

  416. You have to remember

  417. who God says that you are,

  418. and you aren't a slave,

  419. and you aren't an orphan.

  420. You're a child of God.

  421. Truly, you are.

  422. A few years ago,

  423. I came across a story

  424. of a young girl

  425. who was adopted

  426. by this very loving

  427. Christian family,

  428. and the home

  429. that she came from

  430. was really broken,

  431. and this poor girl

  432. was abused,

  433. both physically

  434. and emotionally,

  435. and she had deep

  436. external

  437. and internal

  438. scars and wounds.

  439. Right?

  440. And so,

  441. moving into a home

  442. with a loving family

  443. was not easy for her

  444. because she carried Egypt

  445. into that home,

  446. and it also wasn't easy

  447. for her new parents.

  448. Although she was legally

  449. their daughter,

  450. this girl did not treat

  451. her new parents

  452. as her parents.

  453. Instead,

  454. she was cold towards them,

  455. and she was full of fear

  456. whenever they were around,

  457. fearing that they would

  458. do the same

  459. that her previous parents

  460. did to her.

  461. Well,

  462. over the course

  463. of the next year,

  464. this young girl

  465. was loved on

  466. by her parents,

  467. and her parents

  468. met her daily needs.

  469. And over time,

  470. her heart began

  471. to soften.

  472. It began to warm

  473. towards her new parents

  474. until one day,

  475. after multiple failed

  476. attempts to tie her shoe,

  477. she walks over

  478. to her father,

  479. and for the first time

  480. in her life,

  481. she says,

  482. Daddy,

  483. will you help me

  484. tie my shoe?

  485. And he has tears

  486. streaking down his face,

  487. and he says,

  488. Yes,

  489. I would love to.

  490. You see,

  491. in this moment,

  492. what was legally true

  493. had become practically true.

  494. She was already

  495. their daughter,

  496. but she didn't fully

  497. understand or believe it,

  498. but now it had become

  499. practically true.

  500. That truth had been

  501. driven into her heart.

  502. It took a year

  503. in the wilderness

  504. for her to realize

  505. that she was no longer

  506. a slave to fear,

  507. that she was no longer

  508. an orphan,

  509. but she was a daughter

  510. who was deeply loved.

  511. According to J.I. Packer,

  512. the revelation

  513. to the believer

  514. that God is their father

  515. is in a sense

  516. the climax

  517. of the entire Bible.

  518. I'm going to say

  519. that one again.

  520. The revelation

  521. to the believer

  522. that God is their father

  523. is in a sense

  524. the climax

  525. of the entire Bible.

  526. When you understand

  527. and firmly believe

  528. that God is your loving father,

  529. that changes everything.

  530. Right?

  531. It changes everything.

  532. Being able to cry out,

  533. Abba, Father,

  534. is at the heart

  535. of Christianity.

  536. And it is the truth

  537. that must fight your fear

  538. in the wilderness.

  539. The second thing

  540. the wilderness shows us

  541. is that it addresses

  542. our forgetfulness.

  543. Our problem

  544. is like the Israelites.

  545. We are a very forgetful people.

  546. With the Israelites,

  547. God was visibly with them.

  548. He was visibly leading them

  549. by day and night

  550. through the wilderness.

  551. They had just witnessed

  552. God perform

  553. ten miraculous plagues

  554. to deliver them

  555. from slavery in Egypt.

  556. They got to see that

  557. with their own eyes.

  558. As we saw last week

  559. in Exodus 14,

  560. the Israelites just walked

  561. through the Red Sea

  562. on dry ground.

  563. But when hunger struck,

  564. they forgot

  565. their redemption story.

  566. It only took two months

  567. for spiritual amnesia

  568. to kick in.

  569. And they start to grumble

  570. and complain.

  571. And they start to long

  572. to return to Egypt

  573. of all places.

  574. And like I said last week,

  575. they start to rewrite history.

  576. They keep doing this.

  577. And they're going to do it

  578. over and over again

  579. throughout the remainder

  580. of their time

  581. in the wilderness.

  582. They rewrite history.

  583. Look at verse 3.

  584. It says,

  585. they said,

  586. back in Egypt,

  587. we had meat pots.

  588. We had meat and bread.

  589. We had water.

  590. We had shelter.

  591. We had everything

  592. that we could have needed

  593. and then some.

  594. Which is not true.

  595. Right?

  596. They say,

  597. what have you done

  598. bringing us out here

  599. into the wilderness?

  600. Back then,

  601. back there,

  602. we had everything we needed.

  603. But here,

  604. we're barely surviving.

  605. And that's how

  606. the wilderness feels sometimes.

  607. It feels like

  608. we're barely surviving.

  609. It feels like

  610. we're holding on

  611. by a thread.

  612. But the good news

  613. of the gospel

  614. is that that thread

  615. that we hold onto,

  616. it's indestructible.

  617. Right?

  618. It won't let us go.

  619. Their conditions

  620. in the wilderness

  621. were very rough.

  622. I will conceive

  623. that point.

  624. Okay?

  625. But they're acting

  626. as if the God

  627. who was with them

  628. in Egypt

  629. was not with them now.

  630. I was wondering,

  631. like,

  632. how could they not

  633. trust God

  634. after God

  635. just delivered them?

  636. The amazing thing

  637. about Exodus 16

  638. is that even though

  639. the Israelites

  640. were grumbling

  641. and complaining

  642. and longing

  643. to go back

  644. to slavery in Egypt,

  645. God still gets down

  646. and ties their shoes.

  647. He knew their physical needs

  648. and so He meets

  649. their physical needs.

  650. God knew

  651. that their fragile faith

  652. needed a daily

  653. divine reminder

  654. of their redemptive story.

  655. They needed to be reminded

  656. every single day

  657. of God's faithfulness

  658. towards them.

  659. And so He sends bread

  660. from heaven

  661. every single day.

  662. You see,

  663. the bread wasn't only

  664. to feed them,

  665. it was to remind them

  666. of who they were

  667. and where they were headed.

  668. I love this.

  669. This is often overlooked.

  670. God doesn't just give them

  671. enough bread

  672. to survive the wilderness.

  673. He gives them

  674. plenty.

  675. He gives them

  676. an abundance of bread.

  677. In verse 18,

  678. it says,

  679. each of them gathered

  680. as much as He could eat.

  681. Their stomachs

  682. were full

  683. people,

  684. which was a rare experience,

  685. a rare thing

  686. in the world

  687. back then and today.

  688. They were feasting

  689. in the wilderness.

  690. This was like

  691. an all-you-can-eat buffet.

  692. God was not

  693. stingy.

  694. And God also,

  695. He wasn't just giving them

  696. like this buffet

  697. of tasteless,

  698. stale bread,

  699. like the bare minimum.

  700. He was giving them bread

  701. that tasted like honey,

  702. which was the delicacy

  703. of the day.

  704. He was giving them

  705. bread that tasted

  706. like heaven.

  707. And you see

  708. what God is doing here.

  709. He's giving them

  710. this honey bread feast

  711. in order to give them

  712. a taste,

  713. a foretaste

  714. of what they will

  715. one day experience,

  716. what they will enjoy.

  717. He's giving them

  718. a foretaste

  719. of the place

  720. where they were headed,

  721. and that is to a place

  722. flowing with milk

  723. and honey.

  724. He's giving them

  725. a taste of paradise

  726. in the wilderness.

  727. Listen,

  728. to survive

  729. the wilderness,

  730. you have to remember

  731. where you are headed,

  732. that you are headed

  733. towards the promised land.

  734. You have to remember

  735. that life,

  736. this life,

  737. isn't the promised land.

  738. You have to remember

  739. that your dream job

  740. isn't the promised land,

  741. that your dream vacation

  742. isn't the promised land,

  743. that successful children

  744. isn't the promised land,

  745. that retirement

  746. isn't the promised land.

  747. Right?

  748. We have to remember

  749. that this world

  750. is not the promised land.

  751. This world,

  752. my friends,

  753. is a spiritual wilderness

  754. where we get to taste

  755. heaven now,

  756. but it's not yet

  757. been fully consummated.

  758. It is a painful wilderness,

  759. yet it is a purposeful wilderness.

  760. And thankfully,

  761. God knows exactly

  762. what He is doing

  763. in this wilderness.

  764. And so we can trust Him

  765. throughout it.

  766. He has placed us

  767. in this wilderness

  768. to sanctify our souls,

  769. to free us from fear,

  770. to instill in us

  771. a dependence on Him,

  772. and to prepare our hearts

  773. for the real promised land.

  774. There's a story

  775. about Michelangelo.

  776. I don't know how true it is,

  777. but it's a fun story.

  778. He was asked about

  779. the difficulties

  780. that he faced

  781. while sculpting

  782. his masterpiece,

  783. David.

  784. And supposedly,

  785. Michelangelo replied,

  786. you just chip away

  787. the stone

  788. that doesn't look like David.

  789. I love this

  790. because that's what

  791. the wilderness is for us.

  792. In the wilderness,

  793. our fears,

  794. our struggles,

  795. our idolatries,

  796. our deepest sins

  797. are being chipped away

  798. by God

  799. to reveal

  800. this beautiful

  801. masterpiece of faith.

  802. In the wilderness,

  803. God is chipping away

  804. the parts of you

  805. that don't look like Jesus.

  806. Do you trust God

  807. in the wilderness?

  808. Truly.

  809. The Israelites

  810. did not trust God

  811. in the wilderness,

  812. which is why

  813. they begin to hoard

  814. the manna

  815. that God sends

  816. from heaven.

  817. They start to hoard it.

  818. Instead of gathering

  819. enough food

  820. for one day

  821. as God commanded,

  822. they gathered food

  823. for multiple days

  824. because their physical fear

  825. trumped their spiritual faith.

  826. The Israelites

  827. suffered from what I like

  828. to call spiritual amnesia.

  829. They were quick

  830. to forget

  831. their redemption story.

  832. They were quick

  833. to forget

  834. the Passover lamb

  835. who was sacrificed

  836. as their substitute

  837. and whose blood

  838. sheltered them

  839. from God's judgment.

  840. They were quick

  841. to forget

  842. the baptismal waters

  843. of the Red Sea

  844. that cleansed them.

  845. They were quick

  846. to forget

  847. who they were

  848. as children of God.

  849. We are no different.

  850. My favorite

  851. Adam Sandler

  852. and Drew Barrymore

  853. movie is

  854. 50 First Dates.

  855. These two have been

  856. in a slew

  857. of movies together.

  858. 50 First Dates

  859. is my favorite.

  860. In the movie,

  861. Lucy,

  862. played by Drew Barrymore,

  863. she gets in a bad

  864. car crash

  865. and she has,

  866. she causes

  867. short-term memory loss

  868. and as a result,

  869. every day

  870. that she wakes up,

  871. she thinks

  872. is the same day

  873. that she got

  874. in the car crash.

  875. Right?

  876. And her family

  877. and friends,

  878. they weren't really

  879. helping the situation.

  880. They come up

  881. with this elaborate plan

  882. to make her think

  883. that every day

  884. was, in fact,

  885. the same day

  886. as her car crashed

  887. because the few times

  888. that they told her

  889. what happened,

  890. she freaked out

  891. and she had a panic attack

  892. and they didn't want

  893. to deal with that.

  894. She was unhappy

  895. so they wanted

  896. to kind of keep her

  897. in that little bubble,

  898. that little lie

  899. that they had created

  900. for her.

  901. And their plan

  902. was working great.

  903. Right?

  904. It was working fine

  905. for month after month

  906. until this guy

  907. named Henry Roth

  908. comes around.

  909. He's played by Adam Sandler

  910. and he falls in love

  911. with Lucy.

  912. And Henry wasn't content

  913. with a lie

  914. that was being fed

  915. to Lucy

  916. over and over

  917. and over again.

  918. And so Henry,

  919. he makes Lucy

  920. this video.

  921. He calls it

  922. Good Morning Lucy.

  923. Right?

  924. It's her Good Morning Lucy video.

  925. And every morning

  926. she was to watch

  927. this video

  928. to set her memory free.

  929. In the video,

  930. she saw pictures

  931. of her car crash.

  932. She saw what happened

  933. to her.

  934. And then she saw

  935. like cat scans

  936. of her damaged brain.

  937. And then she saw clips

  938. of her friends

  939. and they were telling her

  940. like it's going to be okay

  941. and we're going to walk

  942. with you through this.

  943. And then the video ends

  944. with like the most

  945. profound thing.

  946. She watches

  947. her own wedding ceremony.

  948. And then she looks

  949. down at her hand.

  950. She sees a ring.

  951. And she's reminded,

  952. I am married.

  953. And then she walks

  954. out of her room

  955. and she goes up the stairs

  956. and she meets

  957. her husband

  958. for the first time

  959. every single day.

  960. My friends,

  961. you have to meet

  962. Jesus every single day

  963. because we are so forgetful.

  964. You serve a God

  965. who is not content

  966. with the lies

  967. that the world

  968. is feeding you.

  969. And so he graciously

  970. inspired a book.

  971. It's like our

  972. good morning

  973. Christian book

  974. that we are to read

  975. every day

  976. to set our memories

  977. free.

  978. We are to be reminded

  979. of who we are,

  980. who God is,

  981. and where we're headed.

  982. He's given us

  983. a book

  984. that it tells us.

  985. All right?

  986. You need to be reminded

  987. of your redemption

  988. story every day.

  989. You need to be reminded

  990. of Genesis 3,

  991. the event that caused

  992. your spiritual amnesia

  993. that explains

  994. all of the

  995. bad in the world.

  996. All right?

  997. You need to remember

  998. that you were married

  999. to a Savior

  1000. who despite

  1001. your many flaws

  1002. chose to set

  1003. his love on you.

  1004. That's the greatest

  1005. news you'll ever hear.

  1006. The third thing

  1007. the wilderness shows us

  1008. is that it strengthens

  1009. our faithfulness.

  1010. In order to survive

  1011. the wilderness,

  1012. we have to remember

  1013. our redemption story.

  1014. Right?

1015. And to help us remember,

  1016. God has graciously

  1017. given us

  1018. a taste of heaven

  1019. now

  1020. in the midst

  1021. of the wilderness.

1022. I'm going to give you

  1023. three things

  1024. that God has given

  1025. to us

  1026. to get through

  1027. the wilderness.

  1028. First,

  1029. he gives us

  1030. a Christian family.

  1031. Did you notice

  1032. how the Israelites

  1033. gathered manna

  1034. every morning?

  1035. They were to gather

  1036. bread as a family,

  1037. as a community.

  1038. They didn't go out

  1039. into the wilderness

  1040. alone.

  1041. They went together

  1042. to find manna

  1043. and to feast

  1044. on this bread.

  1045. They didn't go

  1046. as individuals.

  1047. They went together

  1048. as a family.

  1049. And we are

  1050. to do the same.

  1051. You and I,

  1052. we cannot survive

  1053. the wilderness alone.

  1054. You can try

  1055. all you want,

  1056. but it's not going

  1057. to work.

  1058. Okay?

  1059. You can't survive

  1060. this wilderness alone.

  1061. You need this family

  1062. that God has graciously

  1063. given to us.

  1064. And my friends,

  1065. this family

  1066. is a taste

  1067. of heaven now.

  1068. This morning,

  1069. we're going to celebrate

  1070. the Lord's Supper.

  1071. In this meal,

  1072. it's a family meal.

  1073. You don't take it

  1074. as an individual.

  1075. We take it corporately.

  1076. We take it together

  1077. because it is

  1078. a family meal.

  1079. We take it together

  1080. in faith.

  1081. The second thing

  1082. that God gives us

  1083. is the Sabbath.

  1084. Since God made us,

  1085. he knows what is

  1086. best for us.

  1087. He knows

  1088. better than we do.

  1089. He knows that we

  1090. have a limited bandwidth.

  1091. He knows that we

  1092. can't go forever.

  1093. He knows that we

  1094. need to slow down

1095. and take a deep breath

  1096. and rest.

  1097. He knows that we

1098. need a day each week

  1099. to fix our eyes

  1100. on him.

  1101. In Exodus 16,

  1102. God set aside

  1103. the Sabbath.

  1104. It wasn't to be

  1105. a day of labor.

  1106. It was to be

  1107. a day of rest

  1108. for the Israelites,

1109. and it is the same

  1110. for us.

  1111. The Sabbath,

  1112. it may not make

  1113. economic sense,

  1114. but it makes

  1115. divine sense,

  1116. and that's where

  1117. true wisdom lies.

  1118. Wisdom is believing

  1119. and trusting that

  1120. God knows what's

  1121. best for you.

  1122. Listen,

  1123. we are wired

  1124. for worship,

  1125. worship,

  1126. and God gave us

  1127. a day each week

  1128. for worship

  1129. to remember

  1130. who God is,

  1131. to remember

  1132. who we are,

  1133. and to remember

  1134. where we're headed.

  1135. The Sabbath

1136. is a gift from God.

  1137. It is a taste

  1138. of heaven.

  1139. The rest that we

  1140. experience

  1141. each Sabbath,

  1142. each Sunday,

  1143. it is a taste

  1144. of heaven

  1145. in the wilderness.

  1146. the third thing

  1147. God gives us

  1148. is bread,

  1149. and he gives us

  1150. an abundance

  1151. of bread.

  1152. He gives us

  1153. the one bread

  1154. that actually

  1155. satisfies our hunger.

  1156. Get this,

  1157. the word manna,

  1158. it literally means

  1159. what is it,

  1160. or what is this?

  1161. That's what they

  1162. named the bread

  1163. because they had

1164. no idea what it was

1165. or where it came from,

  1166. but they still feasted

  1167. on this bread

  1168. in faith

  1169. to survive

  1170. the wilderness.

  1171. Similarly,

  1172. after Jesus

  1173. calmed the storm

  1174. in Mark 14,

  1175. do you remember

  1176. what the disciples

  1177. said to one another?

  1178. Who is this

  1179. that even the winds

  1180. and the seas

  1181. obey him?

  1182. In Luke 5,

  1183. after Jesus heals

  1184. the paralyzed man,

  1185. do you remember

  1186. what the Pharisees

  1187. said to one another?

  1188. Who is this?

  1189. Who can forgive sins

  1190. but God alone?

  1191. You see,

  1192. the Pharisees

  1193. and the disciples,

  1194. they didn't fully

  1195. understand

  1196. who Jesus was.

  1197. The answer

  1198. to this question,

  1199. who is this?

  1200. It comes from

  1201. a very unlikely person

  1202. in Matthew 27.

  1203. After Jesus

  1204. was crucified

  1205. and the curtain

  1206. and the temple

  1207. was torn in two

  1208. and the barrier

  1209. that separated God

  1210. from his people

  1211. was removed,

  1212. the earth shook

  1213. and the centurion

  1214. who nailed Jesus

  1215. to the cross

  1216. looks over

  1217. at his friends

  1218. and says,

  1219. truly,

  1220. this was

  1221. the Son of God.

  1222. It clicked for him.

  1223. Right?

  1224. Listen,

1225. do you see the connection

  1226. between the manna

  1227. that came down

  1228. from heaven

  1229. in Exodus 16

  1230. and Jesus Christ?

1231. We read from John 6

  1232. earlier.

  1233. They're the same thing.

  1234. Right?

  1235. Jesus says

  1236. in John 6,

  1237. 35,

  1238. I am the bread

  1239. of life.

  1240. Whoever comes

  1241. to me

  1242. shall not hunger.

  1243. You see,

  1244. the manna

  1245. that came down

  1246. from heaven

  1247. and satisfied

  1248. the fearful

  1249. and forgetful

  1250. Israelites

  1251. is the same bread

  1252. that comes down

  1253. from heaven

  1254. to feed

  1255. fearful

  1256. and forgetful

  1257. us.

  1258. And we don't

  1259. just get a taste

  1260. of it.

  1261. Right?

  1262. We get the

  1263. fullest

  1264. and final

  1265. revelation

  1266. of God himself

  1267. and Jesus Christ.

  1268. Listen,

1269. when one of my kids

  1270. is hungry,

  1271. they don't look

  1272. at their report cards

  1273. to satisfy

  1274. their hunger.

  1275. They don't look

  1276. at their bank accounts

  1277. or their Instagram feeds.

  1278. They come to me

  1279. and they say,

  1280. hey,

  1281. dad,

  1282. I'm hungry.

  1283. Can you give me

  1284. something to eat?

1285. They go to the right

  1286. source to satisfy

  1287. their hunger.

  1288. Likewise,

  1289. we are God's children

1290. and we have to go

  1291. to the right source

  1292. to satisfy

  1293. our soul's

  1294. deepest hunger

  1295. because it's the only

  1296. place where we'll

  1297. actually find

  1298. satisfaction.

  1299. We are to be

  1300. a people

  1301. who,

  1302. like in

  1303. John 6,

  1304. say,

  1305. give us this bread

  1306. always.

  1307. We're to be

  1308. a people

  1309. who pray,

  1310. give us this

  1311. day

  1312. our daily bread.

  1313. In other words,

  1314. give me this

  1315. day,

  1316. Jesus.

  1317. And tomorrow,

  1318. give me

  1319. Jesus.

  1320. And the next

  1321. day,

  1322. give me

  1323. Jesus.

  1324. And next week,

  1325. give me

  1326. Jesus.

  1327. Next month,

  1328. give me

  1329. Jesus.

  1330. Next year,

  1331. give me

  1332. Jesus.

  1333. And give me

  1334. Jesus every

  1335. single day

  1336. until it's

  1337. my last

  1338. day.

  1339. Because on

  1340. that day,

  1341. I won't

  1342. just get

  1343. a taste.

  1344. We're

  1345. going to

  1346. feast.

  1347. Brothers and

  1348. sisters,

  1349. this year,

  1350. I pray that

  1351. you remember

  1352. this life-changing

  1353. truth.

  1354. Even in the

  1355. wilderness,

  1356. God is with

  1357. you.

  1358. He is for

  1359. you.

  1360. He loves

  1361. you.

  1362. He knows

  1363. what he is

  1364. doing.

  1365. And his

  1366. mercies are

  1367. new every

  1368. single morning.

  1369. Amen.

  1370. And let me

  1371. pray for

  1372. us.

  1373. Heavenly

  1374. Father,

  1375. we thank

  1376. you for

  1377. this paradigm

  1378. that we see

  1379. of our own

  1380. salvation in

  1381. Exodus 16.

  1382. That as

  1383. Christians,

  1384. we have

  1385. crossed over

  1386. to the

  1387. justification

  1388. side of

  1389. the sea,

  1390. the

  1391. sanctification

  1392. side,

  1393. and we

  1394. are walking

  1395. and wandering.

  1396. Sometimes it

  1397. feels through

  1398. a wilderness

  1399. that is harsh

  1400. and difficult

  1401. and painful.

  1402. But we

  1403. know that

  1404. you are

  1405. with us,

  1406. that you're

  1407. for us,

  1408. and that

  1409. you will

  1410. not abandon

  1411. us.

  1412. We pray,

  1413. Lord,

  1414. that you

  1415. would press

  1416. these truths

  1417. into our

  1418. heart,

  1419. that we

  1420. would remember

  1421. who we

  1422. are,

  1423. that we

  1424. are children

  1425. of God,

  1426. and that

  1427. this truth

  1428. will change

  1429. the way

  1430. that we

  1431. view ourselves,

  1432. view others,

  1433. and view

  1434. this entire

  1435. creation that

  1436. you have

  1437. given to

  1438. us.

  1439. We pray

  1440. that you

  1441. would change

  1442. us,

  1443. form us,

  1444. chip away

  1445. the parts

  1446. of us that

  1447. don't look

  1448. like Jesus.

  1449. And it's

  1450. through his

  1451. name we

  1452. pray.

  1453. Amen.
