  1. Hey, good morning, church.

  2. Thanks for being with us again for our second virtual live stream.

  3. It's good to be with you all, even if it's over the Internet.

  4. Before we get started, I just want to highlight a couple announcements, since we're not able

  5. to have announcements timed together like we would in a normal service.

  6. First of all, we're going to have another church town hall this Wednesday, April the

  7. first at 7 p.m. And so if you're finding it here, you can find it in the same place.

  8. It's going to be on Facebook Live.

  9. And just like we're doing for this message and our other videos, you can also find it

  10. embedded on our website because we know that not everyone has Facebook.

  11. So one thing that you all can help me with is spreading the word that you don't actually

  12. have to have a Facebook account to be able to access our videos.

  13. The other announcement I want to highlight is that Chris Bradley is starting a Sunday

  14. school today at 4 p.m.

  15. And if you want more details about that, you can email Chris with your church directory

  16. that I'm sure you have.

  17. Or you can also find all the details in our Friday email.

  18. If you are not on the Friday email, that's one of our most important communication tools.

  19. And it's very simple to be added.

  20. You just need to go to our website and scroll down to the bottom right of any page.

  21. And on the bottom right of any page, there will be a place where you can enter your email

  22. address to sign up.

  23. So I want to highlight that as we're beginning.

  24. This morning, we are gathering together like we always do, no matter what, because we believe

  25. that there's no one so good that they don't need God's grace and no one so bad that they

  26. can't have it, which means it's important, whether we're in person or at home, to return

  27. again and again to God and his word.

  28. Last week, we finished our series on 1 Peter, and we're going to return for this Sunday to

  29. the book of Psalms.

  30. If you've been with us for a while, you know that we've been in Psalms multiple times.

  31. We were there for Advent in December of 2018, and then we were also there this past summer

  32. in 2019.

  33. So you'll remember that the Psalms are a book in the Old Testament, and they're the prayer

  34. book and the hymn book of God's people.

  35. It's a guide for us of how we speak to God in various situations.

  36. It's our guide for worshiping him.

  37. And the Psalms continue to be used, not just by God's people in the Old Testament, but

  38. also by the church in the New Testament.

  39. It's an incredible resource for Christians, no matter what they face in life.

  40. This Sunday, we're going to be talking or looking at Psalm 46.

  41. And as we look at Psalm 46, it's going to address the topic of fear.

  42. In fact, that's something that I've been thinking a lot about over the last couple weeks.

  43. It's certainly our experience, right, during these times that we have the emotion of fear.

  44. And yet we're going to see in this passage that God's going to tell us not to fear, which

  45. can be confusing at times for us as Christians.

  46. So we're going to look at what that actually means.

  47. Just like I'm concerned at times when people say, have faith, depending on what they mean

  48. by that.

  49. I'm also concerned sometimes when people say, don't fear.

  50. Do they mean that this is a license for foolishness, for example?

  51. Does not having fear mean we can do whatever we want without fear of consequence?

  52. Perhaps telling someone not to fear is a tool of shame, right?

  53. They're sharing with you some of their frustrations and what they think might happen in the future,

  54. and you'd rather not listen to it.

  55. And so you just tell them not to be afraid.

  56. There are certainly appropriate ways to use fear and inappropriate, and so we're going

  57. to look at that this morning from Psalm 46.

  58. What does it mean not to have a fear?

  59. It's with that question, we're going to turn to God's Word.

  60. You can turn with me in your Bible as I'm turning in mine.

  61. You can turn on your phone, or you can also find it on the internet.

  62. Just search Psalm 46.

  63. And as we come to this Psalm, remember that this is God's Word.

  64. And God tells us that His Word is more precious than gold, even the finest gold.

  65. And it's sweeter than honey, even honey that comes straight from the honeycomb.

  66. And so that's why we're going to read it now, starting at verse 1.

  67. God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

  68. Therefore, we will not fear, though the earth gives way,

  69. though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea.

  70. Though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling.

  71. Verse 4.

  72. There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God,

  73. the holy habitation of the Most High.

  74. God is in the midst of her.

  75. She shall not be moved.

  76. God will help her when morning dawns.

  77. Verse 6.

  78. The nations rage, the kingdoms totter.

  79. He utters His voice, the earth melts.

  80. The Lord of hosts is with us.

  81. The God of Jacob is our fortress.

  82. Verse 8.

  83. Come, behold the works of the Lord, how He has brought desolations on the earth.

  84. He makes wars cease to the end of the earth.

  85. He breaks the bow and shatters the spear.

  86. He burns the chariots with fire.

  87. Be still and know that I am God.

  88. I will be exalted among the nations.

  89. I will be exalted in the earth.

  90. The Lord of hosts is with us.

  91. The God of Jacob is our fortress.

  92. I invite you to pray with me this morning as we come to this portion of God's word.

  93. Our Father in heaven, we thank you that you are our refuge and our strength.

  94. A very present help in trouble.

  95. And we thank you that one of the ways that you are a present help to us is through your word.

  96. And so we thank you for Psalm 46 and we ask that you would use it this morning.

  97. That you'd speak to us through it.

  98. You'd comfort us in our fears.

  99. And you'd encourage us in our trials.

  100. We ask all of these things knowing that you are with us.

  101. And you're with us not because of what we've done.

  102. But because of what Jesus has done.

  103. And so we ask it in his name.

  104. Amen.

  105. In December of 2018, when we were looking at the Psalms, when we came to Psalm 13, I shared with you the idea of the open when letter.

  106. If you've been in a long distance relationship or you just have someone that you care about, a friend who's gone for a long time, maybe this is something on a deployment.

  107. You might set together a list of letters, make a stack of letters, and you'd say you open this letter when a certain situation happens.

  108. Open this letter when you're sad.

  109. Open this letter when you've had a bad day.

  110. Open this letter when you're missing home.

  111. And as I told you then, the Psalms are God's open when letters.

  112. He gives us different Psalms for different circumstances, knowing that we'll face all kinds of trials and struggles in this life.

  113. This Psalm, Psalm 46, is an open when Psalm for times of crisis.

  114. God knows that there will be times when we feel like the world is falling apart.

  115. And he cares so much that he's given us a Psalm for moments like that.

  116. And that Psalm, one of them, is Psalm 46.

  117. It's a Psalm for when the world is falling apart.

  118. And here, what's described is the world is actually literally falling apart.

  119. Verses 2 and 3.

  120. We will not fear, though the earth gives way, though the mountains be moved into the heart of the sea.

  121. Though its waters roar and foam, though the mountains tremble at its swelling.

  122. In other words, things are so bad that the very mountains are falling.

  123. I wonder if you've felt like the mountains are falling the last couple weeks.

  124. And maybe, like, the world is literally falling apart.

  125. Maybe it's something in your personal life.

  126. Maybe you've lost a job.

  127. Maybe you have fewer hours.

  128. You have less income.

  129. Maybe the world's falling apart because you're an extrovert.

  130. And you're not just a normal extrovert.

  131. You're a super extrovert.

  132. And suddenly, you find yourself in your worst nightmare.

  133. Having to stay at home.

  134. Maybe your world's falling apart because you relied on the schools and what they provided.

  135. The structure.

  136. And then suddenly, all your children are at home.

  137. And you have to figure out what's next.

  138. All sorts of things are collapsing.

  139. Maybe it's a bigger picture.

  140. Maybe it's not something in your personal life.

  141. But you look at the world around us.

  142. And you think, there are things that seem so secure.

  143. In fact, that's part of the point of this psalm.

  144. The mountains, right?

  145. What could be more secure than the mountains?

  146. What could be more secure than our healthcare system?

  147. What could be more secure than our economic system?

  148. What could be more secure than our government?

  149. Times of crisis highlight that there are many things that are not as strong or reliable or secure as we once thought they were.

  150. It can feel like the mountains are falling into the sea.

  151. It was all a facade or an illusion, right?

  152. An illusion of security or control.

  153. That's what the psalmist is speaking to in this passage.

  154. And he tells us in the middle what we can do.

  155. In verse 2, he says,

  156. Therefore, we will not fear.

  157. In the midst of this trial, in the midst of this trouble, in the midst of a situation where it feels like the world is literally falling apart,

  158. the psalmist comes and says, God's people won't fear.

  159. Which raises the question, what exactly does he mean by fear in that moment?

  160. What's being described here?

  161. There's different types of fear, different kinds of fear.

  162. And it's important for us not to confuse them.

  163. I've been asking this question the last couple weeks.

  164. What is good fear and wrong fear?

  165. What's appropriate and inappropriate fear?

  166. And there's one man, a pastor named Michael Coggin, who's really helpful.

  167. And he's given some categories for fear to help us think through these things.

  168. He gives four types of fear.

  169. I'm just going to highlight two of them.

  170. The first type is this, a God-given emotional response for our benefit.

  171. A God-given emotional response for our benefit.

  172. In other words, there's actually types of fear that are good.

  173. There's types of fear that are helpful for us that are gifts from God.

  174. I'll give you an example.

  175. Some of you may remember in September of 2018, I was gone for a couple Sundays,

  176. and I was in Breckenridge taking some time away.

  177. And while I was there, I took a hike on the Peaks Trail,

  178. which is in the White River National Forest.

  179. It's right by Peak 7, if you're a skier.

  180. And while I was hiking on that trail all by myself,

  181. enjoying some good introvert time, I came across a moose.

  182. Now, if you're familiar with the moose,

  183. you know that it's not a safe or tame animal.

  184. And in that moment, when I saw this moose coming towards me,

  185. I'm walking along the trail.

  186. It's coming from my right side towards me.

  187. There's a sense of fear that I felt, right?

  188. And in that fear, what I didn't do was I didn't say,

  189. well, I have faith.

  190. And God tells me not to fear.

  191. So I'm going to look this moose in the eyes,

  192. and I'm going to let him know that I'm not afraid.

  193. No, that wouldn't be faith, right?

  194. That wouldn't be faith.

  195. That would be foolishness.

  196. The last thing I want is an encounter with this moose.

  197. This moose does not have good things in mind for me,

  198. and so I used my God-given Lamberfittis,

  199. and I got out of there.

  200. In that moment, fear was a gift from God to me.

  201. It was a gift to help me take the right and appropriate action

  202. in that situation.

  203. I mention that because sometimes I've heard,

  204. even in this crisis,

  205. people misusing this idea of not having fear.

  206. They might say, well, we have faith, right?

  207. God is going to take care of us,

  208. and so we don't need to worry about the virus.

  209. We're going to go out into wherever we want,

  210. whatever group we want to,

  211. and we're not going to be scared or afraid

  212. because God is so great,

  213. and yet that's not faith.

  214. That's foolishness.

  215. There is a right and good fear

  216. of things that are threatening in this world.

  217. God gives us fear to help us.

  218. It's an emotional response

  219. that's meant to propel us to action,

  220. often the right action,

  221. and so that's a category one of fear.

  222. It's not always wrong to feel afraid.

  223. Sometimes, in fact, it's a gift from God.

  224. Imagine, for example, if I had decided

  225. I was not going to do anything about this moose.

  226. I was just going to stand there on the trail.

  227. That might not have ended very well.

  228. The next category that I'm going to highlight

  229. is a different one,

  230. fear as a sinful response

  231. to God's providential care.

  232. Fear as a sinful response

  233. to God's providential care.

  234. This is the kind of fear

  235. that's being talked about in this psalm.

  236. And this man, Michael Coggin,

  237. defines it this way,

  238. our default mode is to doubt God's goodness.

  239. We know that we've slipped into that kind of fear

  240. when our default mode is to doubt God's goodness.

  241. He also describes it this way,

  242. the belief, I have to do this on my own.

  243. God isn't good,

  244. and it's up to me to make it happen.

  245. I actually don't believe

  246. that God's a good and loving father.

  247. Instead, I believe that he has left me alone as an orphan.

  248. That's the type of fear

  249. that's being talked about in this psalm.

  250. And so that's what we are talking about in verse two

  251. when we say,

  252. therefore we will not fear,

  253. though the earth gives way.

  254. We continue to believe that God's a good father.

  255. And we know that we're not alone,

  256. and we don't have to do it all by ourselves.

  257. We know, as the psalmist is going to highlight later,

  258. that God is with us.

  259. He says that in verses seven and 11.

  260. But before we get there,

  261. it's easy on the one hand to say,

  262. don't fear.

  263. It's a much harder thing to do.

  264. So what is it that helps us not to fear?

  265. What are the tools that we have

  266. when the mountains are moved into the heart of the sea?

  267. Well, the psalmist goes on to tell us,

  268. and he's telling us in verses four through seven

  269. about God's city.

  270. And there's a contrast here being drawn

  271. between what's happening in the world

  272. and what's happening in God's place.

  273. In the world,

  274. the mountains are moved into the heart of the sea.

  275. There's these threatening waters, right,

  276. that are roaring and foaming, verse three.

  277. In God's city,

  278. things are different.

  279. There's a river,

  280. not an ocean,

  281. and it's not roaring.

  282. This river has streams

  283. that make glad the city of God.

  284. So rather than being a place of chaos,

  285. it's a place of peace and blessing.

  286. It's not waters that destroy,

  287. but a river that gives life.

  288. We see the same thing

  289. in verses two and three in verse five.

  290. Verse two,

  291. the mountains are moved.

  292. God's city, verse five, is not.

  293. God is in the midst of her.

  294. She shall not be moved.

  295. God will help her

  296. when morning dawns.

  297. The mountains are moved.

  298. God and his city

  299. and his people are not.

  300. Waters of chaos and destruction,

  301. river of life.

  302. Things that are moved,

  303. things that are not moved.

  304. Then in verses four and five,

  305. we learn why it is

  306. that these things don't move.

  307. Verse four,

  308. this is the holy habitation

  309. of the Most High.

  310. This is where God lives.

  311. God lives in his city.

  312. Verse five,

  313. God is in the midst of her.

  314. She shall not be moved.

  315. The mountains may move.

  316. God and his people will not

  317. because he is with them.

  318. And it tells us in verse five

  319. that he's going to help them.

  320. So why is it that these people

  321. don't fear?

  322. It's because of this.

  323. God is more powerful

  324. than the other forces

  325. in the world.

  326. Verses five and six,

  327. especially verse six.

  328. The nations rage,

  329. the kingdoms totter.

  330. He uttered his voice,

  331. the earth melts.

  332. Again, a contrast.

  333. The mountains may fall

  334. into the sea.

  335. God is so powerful

  336. that he can make

  337. the entire earth melt.

  338. And so the world

  339. around us may collapse.

  340. God and his people

  341. will not.

  342. The world around us

  343. may collapse.

  344. God and his people

  345. will not.

  346. They will stand firm

  347. because God is with them.

  348. Now this does not mean

  349. there isn't a real suffering.

  350. God's people here

  351. aren't pretending

  352. that something isn't wrong.

  353. In fact, they acknowledge it.

  354. The mountains are falling

  355. into the seas.

  356. They're not putting their hands

  357. over their ears

  358. and closing their eyes.

  359. They recognize

  360. the real trouble

  361. that's going on in the world.

  362. That's why this psalm is here

  363. because there's real problems.

  364. And yet,

  365. it's not that they

  366. don't recognize that.

  367. It's that they have security.

  368. It's not that they

  369. don't recognize

  370. that the world around them

  371. is frightening

  372. and unpredictable.

  373. It's that they also

  374. recognize that God

  375. is fixed

  376. and secure.

  377. And so it's not that

  378. one is true

  379. and the other isn't

  380. but that the two truths

  381. are put together.

  382. The world may be

  383. falling apart.

  384. God is not.

  385. God is not.

  386. Many things

  387. of great value

  388. will be lost

  389. during this time.

  390. What we have

  391. that is of ultimate value

  392. will not be lost.

  393. Many things

  394. of great value

  395. will be lost

  396. during this time.

  397. What we have

  398. that is of ultimate value

  399. will not be lost.

  400. when this passage is talking about the city of God

  401. the people in the Old Testament would have understood it as the city of Jerusalem

  402. now we know that we don't look to the city of Jerusalem

  403. specifically for God's presence as we're the church

  404. but we look to him as he's in the middle of his people

  405. in the same way he dwelled in the middle of his people in the tabernacle

  406. when they moved in the desert

  407. and so our hope is in what we can't lose

  408. not in what we can

  409. I had a friend remind me this week that if we have faith in God

  410. there's always a future for us

  411. if we have faith in God there's always a future for us

  412. and so that's what causes us not to fear the knowledge

  413. that because of our faith and trust in God

  414. we don't have to be afraid of this being the end

  415. I'll put it a different way

  416. and I'm not going to say this in any way to be morbid

  417. but to bring clarity to this situation

  418. what our hope looks like

  419. because of the coronavirus

  420. there will be Christians that die

  421. and they have a future

  422. and so in that sense

  423. they don't need to fear

  424. you can imagine this

  425. what if a dear brother or sister in the Lord became infected

  426. and it came to a point where because of that infection

  427. God brought them home to be with himself

  428. they died

  429. we can say

  430. they don't need to fear in the midst of that

  431. in the sense that they know

  432. that their relationship with God

  433. is not threatened by that

  434. and we don't need to fear

  435. in the sense that we know

  436. the same thing

  437. and so what does it mean

  438. that we will not fear

  439. well there's a healthy sense of fear

  440. right

  441. we actually fear

  442. what's going on right now

  443. in the sense that it could hurt our ability to care

  444. for others and ourselves

  445. and so that sense of fear

  446. propels us to the appropriate actions

  447. it propels us to be careful in certain situations

  448. it propels us to take precautions that are appropriate

  449. that's a right sense of fear

  450. we don't have fear

  451. in the sense that we know it can't threaten

  452. what's of ultimate value

  453. and so there's a right fear

  454. and a wrong fear

  455. God's people have the kind of fear

  456. not that allows them to escape this world

  457. but to have hope beyond this world

  458. they know

  459. there's a river who makes glad

  460. streams make glad the city of God

  461. and this city of God

  462. cannot be moved

  463. no matter what happens in the world

  464. and so that is the kind of fear

  465. that we refuse to have

  466. about a year and a half ago

  467. almost two years ago

  468. I had a phone call with a friend of mine

  469. that helped me clarify

  470. what good and wrong fear looked like

  471. he was in between jobs at the time

  472. he was moving from one part of the country

  473. to the other

  474. and he wasn't sure what his future held for him

  475. in fact he shared with me

  476. that he had about a hundred dollars

  477. left to his name at that point

  478. and he wasn't sure

  479. where his next paycheck

  480. was going to come from

  481. but he was also someone

  482. who has faith

  483. in Jesus Christ

  484. and as he described to me

  485. the way that he was thinking through this

  486. and working through it

  487. as he had his own fears and anxieties

  488. I found it so helpful

  489. that actually at the time

  490. I sat down and I wrote it down

  491. I asked his permission yesterday

  492. to share this

  493. this is essentially what he said to me

  494. he said something like this

  495. when our body and mind

  496. in a fallen state are going crazy

  497. we remember God's truth and love for us

  498. my body and mind are going crazy on me

  499. I know that God will provide for me

  500. and I have to trust him

  501. this is an opportunity for me to seek him

  502. and to exercise faith

  503. I know that God is not going to leave me

  504. I don't know the future

  505. and I'm really anxious about it

  506. but I'm choosing to believe in that

  507. that God loves me

  508. he is for me

  509. he is with me

  510. and it's going to be okay

  511. it might look like I'm failing

  512. but God is with me

  513. brothers and sisters

  514. that is what faith rather than fear looks like

  515. it's not a denial of the reality around us

  516. it's not a denial of the facts

  517. but it's a recognition

  518. that we can still believe

  519. and have faith

  520. as he says here

  521. this is an opportunity for me to seek him

  522. and exercise faith

  523. I know that God is not going to leave me

  524. the same is true for us

  525. if we have faith in Jesus

  526. we know no matter what happens

  527. he is not going to leave us

  528. now this passage tells us

  529. verse 1

  530. God's our refuge and strength

  531. a very present help in trouble

  532. I've given you some sense at this point

  533. of what it means for him to be

  534. that refuge and strength

  535. there's a refuge there right

  536. in the sense that

  537. what's most valuable can't be taken away from us

  538. but it also tells us that he's very present

  539. and he's a help

  540. what does that mean in practical terms

  541. what does that mean in everyday terms

  542. what does that mean this afternoon

  543. as we think about what's going on in our world

  544. and we're tempted

  545. with fear and anxiety

  546. I've made a list

  547. of a few things here

  548. that I believe are true

  549. from the Bible

  550. and true for us

  551. first of all

  552. God provides real help

  553. for his people

  554. verse 5

  555. God will help her

  556. when morning dawns

  557. that doesn't mean

  558. we won't suffer

  559. it does mean

  560. God will never leave us

  561. nor forsake us

  562. second

  563. God provides

  564. his people

  565. for his people

  566. God provides

  567. his people

  568. for his people

  569. we should take these references

  570. to Zion now

  571. and we can apply them

  572. to the church

  573. there's a talk of a city

  574. well what is in a city

  575. there's people

  576. you're not alone

  577. not only in the sense

  578. that God hasn't left you

  579. but he's also provided

  580. a community for you

  581. he's provided other people

  582. to come alongside you

  583. and walk with you

  584. no matter what you suffer

  585. he is present

  586. in the sense

  587. that he's given us

  588. each other

  589. and so God's a help

  590. because he provides real help

  591. he's a help

  592. because he's given us each other

  593. he's also a very present help

  594. because he's given us

  595. his word

  596. to guide us

  597. and instruct us

  598. the fact that Psalm 46

  599. is in the Bible

  600. and it's designed as a psalm

  601. for times of crisis

  602. when it feels like

  603. the world is falling apart

  604. is a very present help to us

  605. this psalm

  606. that we're looking at right now

  607. is part of God's

  608. very present help

  609. God's also very present to us

  610. in the sense that

  611. he's immediately available to us

  612. through prayer

  613. and we have promises

  614. about that

  615. in the Bible

  616. in James chapter 1 verse 5

    James 1:5

  617. he promises to give wisdom

  618. to people who ask for wisdom

  619. in James chapter 5 verse 17

    James 5:17

  620. he promises us

  621. that prayer really does change things

  622. and so I said earlier

  623. God's presence

  624. his help doesn't mean

  625. that we're going to escape suffering

  626. that's true on the one hand

  627. on the other hand

  628. we believe that God

  629. really does provide help

  630. to people who pray to him for it

  631. both of those things are true

  632. they are part of God's help for us

  633. his very present help

  634. finally God gives us

  635. not just a very present help

  636. it tells us he's our strength

  637. part of that means

  638. he's given us his spirit

  639. to live in us

  640. it also means he's given us

  641. the truths and the story

  642. that we need to move forward

  643. it's that strength

  644. that my friend drew upon

  645. when he was in

  646. a moment of uncertainty

  647. with almost no financial resources

  648. and unsure of what the future held for him

  649. he drew strength

  650. from the knowledge

  651. of what we're reminded here

  652. in this psalm

  653. knowing that God

  654. was going to provide for him

  655. and God was not going to leave him

  656. Hebrews chapter 13 verses 5 and 6

    Hebrews 13:5

  657. tell us this

  658. keep your life free

  659. from the love of money

  660. and be content with what you have

  661. for he has said

  662. I will never leave you

  663. nor forsake you

  664. so we can confidently say

  665. the Lord is my helper

  666. I will not fear

  667. what can man do to me

  668. finally

  669. God tells us

  670. not just that we have a future

  671. but we see in verses 8 through 11

  672. that he tells us the future

  673. that is part of our strength

  674. and help

  675. we see in verses 8 and 9

  676. that one day

  677. God is going to bring

  678. wars to cease

  679. to the end of the earth

  680. there's going to come a time

  681. when there will be

  682. no more war in this world

  683. we could adapt this

  684. if we wanted to

  685. and we could say

  686. he makes pandemics

  687. to cease

  688. to the end of the earth

  689. there will come a time

  690. when we don't fear

  691. sickness or disease

  692. anymore

  693. and nothing that happens

  694. in this world

  695. can threaten that

  696. we're told

  697. at the very end

  698. of the book of Revelation

  699. that God's going to

  700. wipe every tear

  701. away from

  702. from our eyes

  703. and so we see

  704. a vision here

  705. of what's coming

  706. one day

  707. God will bring

  708. wickedness and evil

  709. to an end

  710. we see that here

  711. in verse 9

  712. bringing wars to an end

  713. and his name

  714. is going to be exalted

  715. among all the nations

  716. and all the earth

  717. the mountains may fall

  718. into the sea

  719. and we may tremble

  720. verse 6

  721. the nations may rage

  722. and the kingdoms totter

  723. but verse 10

  724. God will be exalted

  725. among the nations

  726. God will one day

  727. be recognized

  728. for what he already is

  729. which is the one

  730. who is in control

  731. of all things

  732. and the one

  733. who's more powerful

  734. than any other force

  735. in the world

  736. and so we can say

  737. as it said here

  738. in verse 11

  739. the Lord of hosts

  740. is with us

  741. the God of Jacob

  742. is our fortress

  743. we can have hope

  744. in that now

  745. even when we know

  746. it won't be fully realized

  747. until the future

  748. in fact

  749. Jesus

  750. himself

  751. instructs us

  752. to look to the future

  753. when we need hope

  754. he tells us

  755. in John chapter 14

    John 14 chapter mention

  756. let not your hearts

  757. be troubled

  758. believe in God

  759. believe also in me

  760. and he tells us

  761. how our hearts

  762. are untroubled

  763. is a picture

  764. towards the future

  765. in my father's house

  766. are many rooms

  767. if it were not so

  768. would I have told you

  769. that I go to prepare

  770. a place for you

  771. and if I go

  772. and prepare a place

  773. for you

  774. I will come again

  775. and I will take you

  776. to myself

  777. that where I am

  778. you may be also

  779. when we suffer

  780. and we face

  781. moments of crisis

  782. it's a wonderful time

  783. for us to look

  784. and focus

  785. on the glories

  786. of heaven

  787. to long

  788. for the time

  789. when Jesus

  790. is going to make

  791. all things right

  792. not as a form

  793. of escapism

  794. and not as a way

  795. to say that this world

  796. doesn't matter

  797. but as an act

  798. of hope

  799. and actually

  800. to say this world

  801. matters so much

  802. that God's coming

  803. back to restore

  804. everything

  805. one day

  806. and so it's that

  807. future orientation

  808. that helps us

  809. we're told twice

  810. in this psalm

  811. that God

  812. is with us

  813. verse 7

  814. the Lord of hosts

  815. is with us

  816. verse 11

  817. the Lord of hosts

  818. is with us

  819. now this would have

  820. been a comfort

  821. and an encouragement

  822. towards the people

  823. originally reading

  824. this psalm

  825. in the Old Testament

  826. and yet it wasn't

  827. fulfilled

  828. we know

  829. from the promise

  830. of Isaiah chapter 7

    Isaiah 7 chapter mention

  831. that there was going

  832. to be one

  833. named Emmanuel

  834. which means

  835. God with us

  836. in Matthew chapter 1

    Matthew 1:23

  837. verse 23

  838. tells us who

  839. this person is

  840. and it's Jesus

  841. our ultimate hope

  842. and confidence

  843. comes from knowing

  844. that God

  845. has not just

  846. given us words

  847. that he's with us

  848. but he's given us

  849. his action as well

  850. he's given us

  851. his very son

  852. who came

  853. as a man

  854. and walked

  855. on this earth

  856. living the life

  857. that we should have

  858. lived

  859. and dying the death

  860. that we should have

  861. died

  862. he's God's seal

  863. and promise to us

  864. that he truly

  865. is with us

  866. so much so

  867. that he became

  868. a man

  869. and so all of this

  870. hope is tied up

  871. with our hope

  872. and our faith

  873. in Jesus Christ

  874. the hope

  875. that's offered

  876. in this psalm

  877. the fear

  878. that we can avoid

  879. is something

  880. that it is

  881. for Christians

  882. and it's only

  883. for Christians

  884. it's only

  885. for people

  886. who long

  887. and want

  888. to be

  889. part of that city

  890. so if you're

  891. someone who

  892. is unsure

  893. about Jesus

  894. and Christianity

  895. this psalm

  896. holds out

  897. part of the hope

  898. that God offers

  899. for his people

  900. and it's for those

  901. who have faith

  902. in Jesus Christ

  903. faith

  904. has three parts

  905. to it

  906. according to

  907. Charles Spurgeon

  908. it is

  909. belief

  910. it's believing

  911. the facts

  912. about the gospel

  913. that Jesus

  914. came

  915. that we deserve

  916. God's punishment

  917. for our sin

  918. but he took it

  919. on our behalf

  920. it's not just

  921. knowledge

  922. but it's also

  923. belief

  924. actually believing

  925. those things

  926. are true

  927. and then it's

  928. not just belief

  929. but it's also

  930. trust

  931. it's living

  932. as if those

  933. things are true

  934. demonstrating

  935. by our lives

  936. that we have

  937. hope

  938. and faith

  939. in Jesus Christ

  940. that's what's

  941. offered

  942. to God's

  943. people

  944. and so

  945. that's the

  946. offer

  947. for you

  948. as well

  949. to repent

  950. and believe

  951. the gospel

  952. and to follow

  953. after Jesus

  954. we're told

  955. a story

  956. in several

  957. of the gospels

  958. about a time

  959. that Jesus

  960. is with his

  961. disciples

  962. in a boat

  963. and a great

  964. storm comes up

  965. while they're

  966. in the boat

  967. and they're

  968. very afraid

  969. being very

  970. afraid

  971. they wake

  972. up

  973. Jesus

  974. and ask

  975. for his

  976. help

  977. they wonder

  978. why it is

  979. that he's

  980. sleeping

  981. Jesus calms

  982. the storm

  983. and then he

  984. rebukes them

  985. and says

  986. oh ye of

  987. little faith

  988. because during

  989. the storm

  990. even before

  991. he calmed

  992. anything

  993. Jesus was

  994. with them

  995. and so

  996. they were

  997. safe

  998. and after

  999. the storm

  1000. he was

  1001. with them

  1002. as well

  1003. it wasn't

  1004. their

  1005. circumstances

  1006. that determined

  1007. whether they

  1008. should fear

  1009. or not

  1010. but it was

  1011. Jesus presence

  1012. with them

  1013. brothers and

  1014. sisters

  1015. that's our

  1016. same

  1017. hope

  1018. as well

  1019. and so

  1020. why is it

  1021. that we

  1022. don't fear

  1023. we don't

  1024. fear because

  1025. we know

  1026. that even

  1027. if the

  1028. mountains

  1029. fall

  1030. God

  1031. and his

  1032. love for

  1033. us will

  1034. not

  1035. the mountains

  1036. can't

  1037. threaten

  1038. what's of

  1039. ultimate

  1040. value to

  1041. us

  1042. we don't

  1043. fear

  1044. because we

  1045. know that

  1046. we have

  1047. a future

  1048. and we

  1049. don't fear

  1050. because we

  1051. know that

  1052. God is a

  1053. very present

  1054. help to

  1055. us

  1056. in trouble

  1057. and so

  1058. we can

  1059. say

  1060. with the

  1061. psalmist

  1062. God

  1063. is our

  1064. refuge

  1065. and strength

  1066. a very

  1067. present

  1068. help

  1069. in

  1070. trouble

  1071. therefore

  1072. we will

  1073. not fear

  1074. though the

  1075. earth

  1076. gives way

  1077. though the

  1078. mountains be

  1079. moved

  1080. into the

  1081. heart of

  1082. the sea

  1083. please pray

  1084. with me

  1085. our father

  1086. in heaven

  1087. we thank

  1088. you

  1089. that you

  1090. give us

  1091. tremendous

  1092. strength

  1093. and encouragement

  1094. through your

  1095. word

  1096. we ask

  1097. you do

  1098. that this

  1099. morning

  1100. you remind

  1101. us of

  1102. what's

  1103. true

  1104. and you

  1105. use it

  1106. to give

  1107. us an

  1108. unshakable

  1109. confidence

  1110. even as we

  1111. see mountains

  1112. falling around

  1113. us we know

  1114. that you

  1115. will not

  1116. and so we

  1117. can trust

  1118. you and

  1119. hold on

  1120. to you

  1121. no matter

  1122. what

  1123. happens

  1124. we thank

  1125. you that

  1126. this is

  1127. not because

  1128. of anything

  1129. that we've

  1130. earned or

  1131. deserved

  1132. but it's

  1133. because of

  1134. Jesus

  1135. and so we

  1136. ask it

  1137. in his

  1138. name

  1139. amen
