  1. Good morning again.

  2. My name is Matthew Capone,

  3. and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church,

  4. and it's my joy to bring God's word to you today.

  5. A special welcome if you're new or visiting with us.

  6. We're glad that you're here.

  7. I'll remind you what I mentioned at the beginning,

  8. which is that we'd love to be able to connect with you,

  9. and the way that you can do that is by going to our website at cmpca.net.

  10. There will be a pop-up as soon as you go to it

  11. that gives you a link to our Connect card,

  12. or if you're already on our website,

  13. under the New Here tab, you can click the link that says Connect,

  14. and that'll give us a chance to have a record of your time with us

  15. and to be able to begin to build a relationship.

  16. With that, we're going to jump into God's word.

  17. We're at the portion of our service where we study the Bible together,

  18. and we study the Bible together because we're convinced

  19. that there's no one so good that they don't need God's grace

  20. and no one so bad that they can't have it,

  21. which means that God has something to say to everyone in his word,

  22. and he promises us that his word is powerful.

  23. It does what he intends for it to accomplish,

  24. and so we come to it knowing that he offers to speak to us.

  25. We are again in the book of 1 Corinthians at chapter 15,

  26. like we were last week, and as we come to this section,

  27. we're starting at verse 50.

  28. I am reminded of when I grew up.

  29. Now, many of you know that I grew up on the East Coast,

  30. right outside Washington, D.C.,

  31. and one of the things that happened many times

  32. when we were growing up there

  33. is that my mom would drive us into the city,

  34. and she would take us to the National Gallery of Art.

  35. My mom was a real lover of art history,

  36. is a real lover of art history,

  37. and so she wanted to pass that on to us as well,

  38. and it was wonderful for us to have access to that.

  39. The museum was free, as many are in D.C.,

  40. and so we spent many days and many hours there,

  41. and I remember one time when we were there

  42. coming across a painting,

  43. and all that the painting had was a skull.

  44. If I remember correctly, it was a skull that was on a table,

  45. and you might find that strange, right?

  46. Why is there just a painting of a skull?

  47. But it's actually part of a broader genre within art history,

  48. and it's a genre known as the memento mori,

  49. a reminder of death.

  50. And I bring this up not to be morbid,

  51. but because it was a theme that people would focus

  52. from time to time on things

  53. that would remind them of their mortality.

  54. It wasn't always a skull.

  55. Sometimes it might be a clock or an hourglass.

  56. But it was a way of remembering,

  57. no matter what's happening in this world,

  58. death is the great equalizer.

  59. It's something that comes for all of us.

  60. And it's something that we're reminded of,

  61. not just by pieces of art,

  62. but also by small tragedies, everyday tragedies.

  63. We're reminded of it as our bodies begin to fail.

  64. We're reminded of it as other people around us experience death.

  65. We are reminded of it when we feel our own weakness.

  66. Of course, it's not something that just small crisis reminds us of,

  67. but that big things remind us of.

  68. The situation that we're in in this world right now with a pandemic

  69. is a reminder to us of what's always been true,

  70. which is that we're fragile and mortal.

  71. No matter how successful we are now or were in the past,

  72. death is as real as it's ever been.

  73. And in fact, that's the backdrop that Easter comes against.

  74. It's what makes our celebration of the resurrection a celebration.

  75. It's that knowledge of death.

  76. It's that reminder of it.

  77. And so that's going to be our simple focus this morning.

  78. What is our hope in the face of death?

  79. What's our hope in the face of death?

  80. Of course, that's a question we should always be asking

  81. and be aware of,

  82. but it's something that for many of us is even more pressing at a time like this

  83. where we're watching many people die

  84. and we're reminded of the frailty of our own bodies.

  85. I had a friend remind me recently

  86. that we read the Bible differently when we need it to be true.

  87. Of course, we always need it to be true,

  88. but it's times like this that underscore that for us,

  89. that bring it to the forefront of our minds,

  90. that we realize more now than at other times our need for comfort and hope.

  91. And so that's why we're going to turn now to 1 Corinthians chapter 15,

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  92. and we're going to be starting at verse 50.

  93. I invite you to read along with me, perhaps on your phone.

  94. You may be able to easily open this passage up on your computer browser.

  95. However you open it up, remember that this is God's word.

  96. And God tells us that his word is a lamp to our feet

  97. and a light to our path.

  98. In other words, he has not left us alone to stumble in the dark,

  99. but instead he's given us his word to show us the way to go.

  100. And so that's why we read it now, starting at verse 50.

  101. I tell you this, brothers,

  102. flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God,

  103. nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable.

  104. Behold, I tell you a mystery.

  105. We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed.

  106. Verse 52.

  107. In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet,

  108. for the trumpet will sound and the dead will be raised imperishable

  109. and we shall be changed.

  110. For this perishable body must put on the imperishable

  111. and this mortal body must put on immortality.

  112. When the perishable puts on the imperishable

  113. and the mortal puts on immortality,

  114. then shall come to pass the saying that is written,

  115. death is swallowed up in victory.

  116. O death, where is your victory?

  117. O death, where is your sting?

  118. The sting of death is sin and the power of sin is the law.

  119. But thanks be to God who gives us the victory

  120. through our Lord Jesus Christ.

  121. Verse 58.

  122. Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable,

  123. always abounding in the work of the Lord,

  124. knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.

  125. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  126. Our Father in heaven, we thank you for your word.

  127. That's both a challenge and a comfort to us.

  128. We praise you that you haven't left us alone,

  129. like orphans,

  130. but that you've spoken to us.

  131. And you've spoken to us in words that we can understand.

  132. And so we ask that you would do that this morning,

  133. that you would send your Holy Spirit

  134. to open our eyes,

  135. to unstop our ears,

  136. to clear our minds and to soften our hearts,

  137. that we would be able to see and hear

  138. and understand and believe

  139. everything that's written about you in your word.

  140. We ask these things,

  141. not because we have earned them or deserve them,

  142. but because we belong to Jesus.

  143. And so we ask these things in his mighty name.

  144. Amen.

  145. Paul begins at the beginning of this section

  146. by reviewing simply what we saw last week.

  147. In verse 50, he tells us,

  148. Now, you'll remember from our discussion last week,

  149. we talked about the new body

  150. and the fact that the new body is going to be connected

  151. to our current bodies,

  152. but it's going to be different.

  153. It's going to have a different quality to it.

  154. While our old bodies are subject to decay and death,

  155. our new bodies will not be.

  156. Now, you might be confused by this phrase

  157. about flesh and blood.

  158. It might sound like Paul is telling us here

  159. that we won't have physical bodies

  160. in the world that's going to come.

  161. Of course, we spent a lot of time

  162. talking about that last week.

  163. That's not what he means.

  164. What he means here is what he called the difference,

  165. I believe it was in verse 44,

  166. between the natural body and the spiritual body.

  167. And he actually clarifies it here for us in this verse,

  168. verse 50.

  169. Flesh and blood, perishable, imperishable.

  170. In other words, flesh and blood refers

  171. to the perishable body.

  172. It's the body, the natural body that we have now

  173. that's subject to sin and decay.

  174. The spiritual body is the body that we look forward to.

  175. It's the body that's powered by the Holy Spirit

  176. and does not experience sin and decay.

  177. And so it's just a reminder, as he tells us here,

  178. the kingdom of God is coming.

  179. The imperishable are coming.

  180. That's what he's telling us in verse 50.

  181. And so what's happening with our bodies

  182. is what we prayed already this morning

  183. in the Lord's Prayer,

  184. that it would be on earth as it is in heaven.

  185. It's with that reminder that Paul jumps in

  186. and tells us what this is going to look like.

  187. In verse 51, he tells us it's going to be a mystery.

  188. And he outlines what that mystery is going to entail.

  189. First of all, it's going to be instantaneous

  190. and it's going to happen to everyone.

  191. So we shall not all sleep.

  192. Verse 51 is referring to the fact

  193. that some people will still be alive when Jesus returns.

  194. Some people will not.

  195. Everyone who has faith in Jesus Christ

  196. will receive this new body.

  197. We shall not all sleep.

  198. In other words, some of us will be alive,

  199. but we shall all be changed.

  200. There will be this change in our bodies

  201. that we discussed last week

  202. that was like the difference between the seed

  203. and the fully grown grain.

  204. Not only will there be a change as part of this mystery,

  205. but it will happen instantly.

  206. Verse 52, in a moment,

  207. in the twinkling of an eye at the last trumpet.

  208. Now you might be wondering

  209. why there's a reference to a trumpet.

  210. This is a image throughout the Old Testament

  211. and the New Testament that accompanies Jesus' return.

  212. In the Old Testament,

  213. the trumpet accompanied what was called the day of the Lord.

  214. And Israel in the Old Testament

  215. understood the day of the Lord

  216. to be a reference to the time when God would come.

  217. He would bring judgment

  218. and He would make everything right.

  219. This is refined for us or clarified for us

  220. in the New Testament in Matthew chapter 24.

    Matthew 24 chapter mention

  221. We're told that when Jesus returns,

  222. there will be a trumpet sound.

  223. And so this sound of the trumpet

  224. is simply a reminder to His readers

  225. of what they most likely already know,

  226. that He's referring to Jesus' return.

  227. And that return is going to happen immediately.

  228. It's going to happen like the twinkling of an eye.

  229. It's going to be in an instant.

  230. Now Paul is writing this to Christians

  231. and so he means this here as an encouragement to them.

  232. But of course, there's also a warning implicit in it.

  233. When Jesus comes,

  234. as we're told throughout the New Testament,

  235. there will not be a telegraph about it.

  236. We won't know that it's coming.

  237. It will happen instantaneously around the world at one moment.

  238. There won't be a warning

  239. outside of the warnings

  240. that God's already given us in His scriptures.

  241. And so I want you to think about it like this.

  242. We're in a current crisis, right?

  243. Had we known exactly what was going to happen right now,

  244. we would have done things differently.

  245. If we could have seen the future,

  246. if we could have seen March of 2020

  247. in say November of 2019,

  248. we would have prepared in a different way.

  249. Perhaps there's certain things we would have purchased.

  250. Maybe some of us would have purchased masks

  251. that we didn't have.

  252. Maybe some of us would have purchased more toilet paper.

  253. Maybe some of us would have saved more money.

  254. There's all sorts of things that we would do

  255. if we had known.

  256. We had some warning, right?

  257. But we didn't have tons and tons of warning.

  258. What I want to highlight in all of that though

  259. is that had we known,

  260. we would have prepared in a different way.

  261. Jesus' return will be like that even more so.

  262. Jesus is not going to return to one part of the world

  263. and then the rest of the world

  264. have a chance to watch it happen and prepare.

  265. It will happen in such a way

  266. that there will be no preparation.

  267. At that moment,

  268. in the twinkling of the eye,

  269. the sound of the trumpet,

  270. there will be those who have faith in Jesus Christ

  271. and those who do not.

  272. And at that moment,

  273. it will be too late.

  274. And so this passage reminds us

  275. that all of us

  276. need to be prepared for Christ's return.

  277. Jesus walked on this earth

  278. in his first coming as a man.

  279. He ascended into heaven

  280. and he told us that he was going to come back

  281. with his second coming.

  282. And when he comes back,

  283. that's when he's going to make all things right.

  284. That's when he's going to restore and renew

  285. the bodies of those who are believers.

  286. And that's when he's going to bring full

  287. and final judgment on the earth.

  288. And so as we're asking this question

  289. about what our hope is,

  290. as we face death,

  291. our hope is that we will be

  292. those who belong to Jesus Christ

  293. when he returns.

  294. And so we need to be prepared,

  295. all of us,

  296. for Jesus' return.

  297. And the way that we are prepared for it

  298. is very simple.

  299. It's what the Bible refers to as faith.

  300. Faith has three parts to it.

  301. The first part,

  302. this is according to a man named Charles Spurgeon,

  303. is knowledge.

  304. It's knowledge of the facts about the gospel.

  305. The fact that we are sinners

  306. and we deserve God's punishment and judgment.

  307. But also the fact that Jesus came,

  308. he lived life in this world,

  309. he lived a perfect life,

  310. the life that we should have lived.

  311. And then he died a death,

  312. the death that we should have died for our sins,

  313. taking God's punishment and wrath onto himself.

  314. And he offers life through that

  315. to anyone who has faith in him.

  316. And so it's knowledge,

  317. but faith is also a belief.

  318. It's actually believing that those things are true,

  319. believing that we are sinners

  320. and we have no hope

  321. outside of God's mercy and Jesus' sacrifice.

  322. It's even more than that belief though,

  323. it's action,

  324. it's trust.

  325. It's living our lives as if those things are true,

  326. revealing through our actions

  327. that that's what we believe.

  328. Brothers and sisters,

  329. Jesus is coming back.

  330. And when he comes back,

  331. it will be like the twinkling of an eye.

  332. It will happen instantaneously.

  333. There will not be a warning.

  334. And so the warning is now,

  335. the call to faith and repentance

  336. is both important and urgent.

  337. Just as most of us did not see this crisis coming,

  338. we didn't know when its timing would occur.

  339. We didn't know it was going to happen.

  340. We don't know the timing of Jesus' return.

  341. However, unlike this crisis,

  342. we know that it's going to happen.

  343. And so Jesus' call to repentance is urgent.

  344. And so if you do not have faith in Jesus Christ,

  345. I encourage you now,

  346. I urge you to repent and believe on him,

  347. knowing that when he returns,

  348. it will be too late.

  349. He is the one who gives us hope.

  350. And he's our only hope in the face of death.

  351. That's what we learn here from knowing

  352. that it's going to happen in a moment

  353. in the twinkling of an eye.

  354. Paul then goes on to outline

  355. what will happen at that return.

  356. He says these words over and over.

  357. We see perishable, imperishable, verse 53.

  358. Perishable, imperishable, verse 54.

  359. Or mortal, immortality, verse 53.

  360. Mortal, immortality, verse 54.

  361. Paul's making a point.

  362. He's repeating these things over and over

  363. to hammer home what it is

  364. that we're looking forward to.

  365. We're looking forward to God's restoration

  366. and his renewal.

  367. We face death now.

  368. If we're in Christ, we won't face it forever.

  369. We experience death now.

  370. We will not experience it forever.

  371. Our hope in the face of death

  372. is that the perishable

  373. will be replaced by the imperishable.

  374. The mortal will be replaced by the immortal.

  375. Paul repeats that here over and over

  376. to drive this home.

  377. That we have a hope.

  378. And it's not in what we can do,

  379. but what Jesus will do

  380. when he returns to the earth.

  381. We have that hope

  382. because of his resurrection from the dead.

  383. And so that's what we celebrate now at Easter.

  384. Paul then tells us

  385. that this is going to happen, right?

  386. This perishable, imperishable,

  387. mortal, immortal.

  388. And at that time,

  389. he gives us a quote here.

  390. There's going to be a saying

  391. that's going to come to pass.

  392. Death will be swallowed up in victory.

  393. And we'll say,

  394. oh, death, where's your victory?

  395. Oh, death, where's your sting?

  396. These are quotations

  397. of Old Testament passages.

  398. And you'll remember

  399. when we were in the letter of 1 Peter,

  400. I told you at one point

  401. about the quote from Martin Luther

  402. where he said that

  403. Jesus, after his resurrection,

  404. went and thumbed his nose

  405. at the devil.

  406. This is similar to that.

  407. It's a acknowledgement of the fact

  408. that when Jesus comes back,

  409. we will thumb our noses at death.

  410. We will thumb our noses

  411. at sickness and disease.

  412. And that is going to mean

  413. that our bodies are restored.

  414. And that's part of the emphasis

  415. of this passage.

  416. And the body's restoration

  417. proves the victory.

  418. You'll know there's a logic to victory,

  419. which is that victory

  420. and territory come together.

  421. If you win a battle,

  422. you receive the territory

  423. that goes with it.

  424. Jesus won the battle against death.

  425. He receives the territory

  426. of our bodies

  427. that were under the reign of death.

  428. And so the restoration

  429. of our bodies emphasizes

  430. how complete and total

  431. Jesus' victory is.

  432. It's in that resurrection,

  433. our resurrection,

  434. that we finally thumb

  435. our noses at death.

  436. That taunt, though,

  437. highlights something else for us.

  438. Remember I pointed out

  439. in our congregational prayer

  440. that it says in verse 54,

  441. then shall come to pass.

  442. In other words,

  443. this is not true yet.

  444. We still experience

  445. the sting of death

  446. in some ways in this world.

  447. It is shown by those

  448. who are dead,

  449. and it's already at work

  450. in those who are alive.

  451. It's shown by those

  452. who are dead.

  453. When we know someone

  454. and they pass,

  455. they're deceased,

  456. they die,

  457. that reveals that death

  458. still has some ability

  459. in this world.

  460. And we also experience

  461. it ourselves,

  462. as I mentioned earlier

  463. in our congregational prayer,

  464. when we experience

  465. a weakness.

  466. I came across a story

  467. recently about a man

  468. named Mr. P in Italy,

  469. and Mr. P was being lauded

  470. for the fact that he had

  471. survived the coronavirus.

  472. Now, there are many people

  473. who have survived,

  474. but Mr. P is special

  475. because he's 101 years old.

  476. He was born in the year 1919,

  477. which means that he was born

  478. during the Spanish flu.

  479. He lived through the Holocaust.

  480. Now he survived the coronavirus.

  481. And he's being celebrated, right?

  482. Here's this man

  483. who's an overcomer.

  484. He's a conqueror.

  485. He's going to be able

  486. to beat death so many times.

  487. Man, look at him.

  488. And I don't mean to devalue that.

  489. There is something encouraging

  490. and something that gives us

  491. hope about that.

  492. On the other hand,

  493. when I heard that,

  494. I thought,

  495. that's wonderful.

  496. And Mr. P is still going

  497. to die one day.

  498. Ultimately and finally,

  499. he's not going to be able

  500. to escape death.

  501. He's not going to be able

  502. to escape that sting.

  503. He will not live forever

  504. and neither will you

  505. unless Jesus returns

  506. in our lifetime.

  507. And so the point is this.

  508. No matter how much kale you eat,

  509. you cannot escape death.

  510. No matter how much you exercise

  511. and take care of your body,

  512. you cannot escape death.

  513. No matter how productive you are

  514. and how much you save

  515. for retirement,

  516. you cannot escape death.

  517. No matter how wonderful

  518. of a job you have,

  519. no matter how much fulfillment

  520. you find in that,

  521. you cannot escape death.

  522. Even if you find

  523. a wonderful man or woman

  524. who's compatible with you

  525. and wants to spend

  526. the rest of their life with you,

  527. you cannot escape death.

  528. It is something

  529. that all of us feel

  530. the sting of.

  531. And Paul goes on

  532. to explain why that's so,

  533. why we can't escape it

  534. in verse 56.

  535. He says,

  536. the sting of death is sin

  537. and the power of sin

  538. is the law.

  539. In other words,

  540. no matter what we do,

  541. we're all going to die

  542. and the reason we're all

  543. going to die

  544. is because none of us

  545. can defeat sin.

  546. None of those things

  547. that I listed

  548. can conquer sin.

  549. Eating kale cannot conquer sin.

  550. Exercising cannot conquer sin.

  551. Marrying the right person

  552. cannot conquer sin.

  553. A wonderful and fulfilling job

  554. cannot conquer sin.

  555. There's nothing

  556. that's in our power

  557. that's able

  558. to conquer sin

  559. because death

  560. and sin

  561. are tied together.

  562. Death

  563. is a result of sin.

  564. Death is a result

  565. of our rebellion

  566. against God.

  567. The emphasis here

  568. in this passage

  569. is on physical death,

  570. but of course,

  571. death affects us

  572. spiritually as well.

  573. It affects us

  574. as we experience

  575. broken relationships

  576. with others.

  577. It affects us

  578. as we worship ourselves

  579. rather than God.

  580. It affects us

  581. as we pursue pleasure

  582. even when it hurts

  583. and violates other people.

  584. Death is at work

  585. when we have frustration

  586. and disappointment

  587. rather than peace

  588. and intimacy.

  589. Death's at work

  590. when we have futility

  591. in our work.

  592. It doesn't always

  593. have purpose

  594. and power.

  595. Death is at work

  596. when we use our power

  597. to push other people down

  598. rather than to lift them up.

  599. Death's at work

  600. when we use our anger

  601. to punish other people

  602. rather than to move

  603. towards reconciliation.

  604. Death is at work.

  605. It has power.

  606. We are not able

  607. to defeat it

  608. because it's the product

  609. of sin.

  610. Only Jesus

  611. can defeat death

  612. because only Jesus

  613. is able to defeat sin.

  614. And so that's the hope

  615. that Paul presents

  616. for us here.

  617. On the one hand,

  618. there's a sting, right?

  619. On the other hand,

  620. we'll be able

  621. to taunt death

  622. about that.

  623. And we'll taunt death

  624. about that

  625. not because of anything

  626. that we can do,

  627. have done,

  628. or will do.

  629. But as Paul tells us here,

  630. we are going to taunt death

  631. because of the victory

  632. of Jesus Christ.

  633. That's what he tells us

  634. in verses 56 and 57.

  635. The sting of death is sin

  636. and the power of sin

  637. is the law.

  638. But thanks be to God

  639. who gives us the victory

  640. through our Lord Jesus Christ.

  641. That's the victory

  642. that Jesus showed

  643. when he rose from the dead.

  644. And it's the victory

  645. he gives to anyone

  646. and everyone

  647. who repents of their sins

  648. and has faith in him.

  649. Jesus has defeated death.

  650. Those who are in him

  651. will defeat death as well.

  652. And so that's the victory

  653. that Paul offers us.

  654. It's a victory

  655. that's through Jesus

  656. and his conquering of death.

  657. Our hope

  658. as we face death

  659. is in Jesus.

  660. Paul then goes on

  661. to tell us

  662. that that doesn't just

  663. affect our hope

  664. but it affects

  665. our action.

  666. He tells us in verse 58

  667. that if we need to be

  668. steadfast,

  669. immovable,

  670. always abounding

  671. in the work of the Lord

  672. because we know

  673. that in the Lord

  674. our labor is not in vain.

  675. Why is our labor

  676. in the Lord not in vain?

  677. Well, it's because

  678. God is not demolishing

  679. this world

  680. but renewing it

  681. and restoring it.

  682. And so what we do now

  683. matters for the future.

  684. As it says here,

  685. if we do it in the Lord,

  686. if God is restoring the world,

  687. then the work that we do

  688. towards that end matters.

  689. And so we have hope

  690. in the face of death

  691. as we look to the future

  692. and we have hope

  693. in our work

  694. even now.

  695. We have hope

  696. as we have jobs

  697. that we're pushing for

  698. what the Old Testament

  699. calls shalom,

  700. this full-bodied flourishing

  701. of the world.

  702. As we do work

  703. that's towards that end,

  704. that's in the Lord

  705. and his purposes

  706. for this world

  707. that we know

  708. that it matters.

  709. as we're parents

  710. and we raise children

  711. who have a vision

  712. for God in this world

  713. that they have faith

  714. in him

  715. and they're looking

  716. for God's goodness

  717. and his love

  718. to be made known

  719. in this universe,

  720. we know that our work

  721. in that is not in vain.

  722. As we enjoy

  723. the creation

  724. that God has given us,

  725. we give tremendous glory

  726. and honor to him

  727. that points to

  728. an even greater glory

  729. and honor

  730. that we'll be able

  731. to give him

  732. once he returns.

  733. And so we work

  734. and we live

  735. and we play

  736. knowing that those things

  737. are not in vain

  738. as and when

  739. they give glory

  740. and honor to God.

  741. Paul then

  742. gives us tremendous

  743. encouragement

  744. for the future

  745. and for now.

  746. We are not just people

  747. who are looking

  748. to escape this world

  749. but we're people

  750. who love this world

  751. and love it so much

  752. that we long for God

  753. to renew it

  754. and restore it

  755. and we work now

  756. towards that hope,

  757. in that hope.

  758. That victory then,

  759. Jesus' victory

  760. is something

  761. that gives us

  762. hope for the future

  763. and it gives us

  764. encouragement

  765. and energy now.

  766. It's what allows us

  767. to be steadfast

  768. and immovable.

  769. What is our hope

  770. in the face of death?

  771. It's our hope

  772. in Jesus

  773. that he's coming back,

  774. that he's making

  775. all things right

  776. and that we can look

  777. and work towards that

  778. and for that

  779. even now.

  780. It's a hope

  781. that we have

  782. because Jesus

  783. rose from the dead.

  784. And so that's the hope

  785. that we celebrate

  786. at Easter.

  787. It's not a pie

  788. in the sky hope.

  789. hope.

  790. It's not a sweet,

  791. sentimental hope,

  792. but it's a real

  793. time and space hope

  794. because we believe

  795. what we're celebrating

  796. now

  797. is that Jesus

  798. actually died

  799. and he actually

  800. rose from the dead.

  801. And when he did

  802. those things,

  803. he defeated death

  804. and he defeated it

  805. for us.

  806. and so no matter

  807. what happens,

  808. we can have joy

  809. in Christ

  810. knowing that,

  811. moving forward

  812. together,

  813. knowing that his death

  814. has accomplished

  815. that for us

  816. and we can have

  817. faith and trust

  818. in it because

  819. of his resurrection.

  820. In his book,

  821. The Lion,

  822. The Witch,

  823. and the Wardrobe,

  824. I mentioned the Narnia

  825. series last week,

  826. C.S. Lewis,

  827. tells the story

  828. of four children

  829. who are sent

  830. to a professor's house

  831. during World War II

  832. and they find

  833. a wardrobe

  834. that serves

  835. as an entrance

  836. into another world.

  837. It's a world

  838. called Narnia.

  839. But Edmund,

  840. one of the brothers,

  841. betrays his siblings

  842. and so it's determined

  843. that because of that,

  844. because of his sin,

  845. he needs to die.

  846. However,

  847. there's a great lion

  848. and this great lion

  849. is named Aslan

  850. and Aslan decides

  851. that instead of allowing

  852. Edmund to die,

  853. he's going to die

  854. in Edmund's place

  855. and the great lion

  856. kills him.

  857. Susan and Lucy,

  858. Edmund's sisters,

  859. visit the place

  860. where Aslan was killed.

  861. But they don't find

  862. Aslan's dead body.

  863. Instead,

  864. they find Aslan himself,

  865. not dead,

  866. but alive.

  867. And confused,

  868. Susan asks Aslan,

  869. she says,

  870. what does all this mean?

  871. Aslan responds

  872. and says,

  873. it means

  874. that though the witch

  875. knew the deep magic,

  876. there is a magic deeper still

  877. which she did not know.

  878. Her knowledge goes back

  879. only to the dawn of time.

  880. But if she could have looked

  881. a little further back

  882. into the stillness

  883. and darkness

  884. before time dawned,

  885. she would have read there

  886. a different incantation.

  887. She would have known

  888. that when a willing victim

  889. who had committed

  890. no treachery

  891. was killed

  892. in a traitor's stead,

  893. the table would crack

  894. and death itself

  895. would start working backwards.

  896. Brothers and sisters,

  897. Jesus was a willing victim

  898. who had committed

  899. no treachery

  900. and he died

  901. in our stead.

  902. And so at that moment

  903. and even now,

  904. for everyone

  905. who has trust

  906. and faith in him,

  907. death itself

  908. is working backwards.

  909. What is our hope

  910. in the face of death?

  911. Our hope is in Jesus.

  912. And if we are in Jesus,

  913. then we are able

  914. to say this

  915. as we face death

  916. in this world

  917. in the present

  918. and as we look forward

  919. to it in the future.

  920. O death,

  921. where is your victory?

  922. O death,

  923. where is your sting?

  924. Please pray with me.

  925. Our Father in heaven,

  926. we confess to you

  927. that we face

  928. many difficult

  929. and challenging things

  930. in this world

  931. and perhaps nothing

  932. more difficult

  933. and challenging

  934. than death itself.

  935. And so we thank you

  936. that you have given us

  937. a hope beyond death.

  938. You've given us

  939. a hope in Jesus

  940. who has defeated death

  941. for us

  942. and so promises

  943. that it will not sting us.

  944. We pray that you would work

  945. that confidence

  946. and that hope

  947. deep into our hearts

  948. and we pray for those

  949. who do not have faith in you

  950. that you would use

  951. this passage now

  952. to draw them

  953. even at this moment

  954. to confess

  955. that they are sinners

  956. in need of your mercy

  957. and that you are their Lord

  958. and their Savior.

  959. It's because Jesus

  960. is our Lord

  961. and our Savior

  962. that we ask these things.

  963. We don't ask them

  964. in our own merit

  965. or behavior

  966. but we ask them

  967. in his mighty name,

  968. the mighty name of Jesus.

  969. Amen.

  970. Amen.

  971. Amen.

  972. Amen.

  973. Amen.

  974. Amen.

  975. Amen.

  976. Amen.

  977. Amen.

  978. Amen.

  979. Amen.

  980. Amen.

  981. Amen.

  982. Amen.

  983. Amen.

  984. Amen.

  985. Amen.

  986. Amen.

  987. Amen.
