  1. Good morning.

  2. My name is Matthew Capone,

  3. and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church.

  4. And it's my joy to bring God's word to you today.

  5. A special welcome if you're new with us.

  6. We'd love to have you go to our website at www.cmpca.net.

  7. And when you go there,

  8. there will be a pop-up immediately with a link to our online visitor card.

  9. We'd ask that you fill that out and give us a chance to connect with you.

  10. Whether you're new or not,

  11. I'll remind you as I always do that while you can see me,

  12. I can't see you.

  13. And while we can see numbers,

  14. we often can't see names.

  15. And so I encourage you to take a moment now to make a comment in the comment box

  16. at the bottom right of the Facebook video.

  17. You can say something as simple as good morning or here or great to be with

  18. everyone.

  19. And you can share where you're watching from and who you're watching with.

  20. And that just gives us a small sense of being together,

  21. even as we're separated.

  22. I also want to let you know,

  23. there's a lot of discussion right now in our city and in our country about

  24. churches reopening.

  25. And so I know many of you have questions about that.

  26. We are talking about it as a leadership.

  27. We're meeting again as elders and deacons this Thursday.

  28. Our hope is that we can open very soon,

  29. but I can't give you a date or any details.

  30. I certainly don't know what the date is yet.

  31. That's a discussion that we're going to have to have together.

  32. And I do know there's some rumors going around.

  33. And so if someone tells you the exact date that we're opening,

  34. just know that I am unaware of that date.

  35. And so take that with a grain of salt.

  36. With that,

  37. I'll remind you that we are in the book of Proverbs this summer.

  38. We started last week there.

  39. And the book of Proverbs is a book in the Old Testament,

  40. which is the section of the Bible that was written before Jesus came.

  41. And it's a book that contains Proverbs,

  42. which is a way of speaking that comes in short,

  43. pithy statements that contain a lot of truth.

  44. But as we mentioned last week,

  45. the book of Proverbs,

  46. of course,

  47. is not less than that,

  48. but it's also much more than that.

  49. The book of Proverbs is a book about wisdom.

  50. And wisdom is skill in the art of living.

  51. Wisdom is how we navigate the area between right and wrong.

  52. God's given us clear boundaries in this world,

  53. but wisdom determines how we interact well within those boundaries.

  54. Wisdom is how we operate in the gray areas.

  55. It helps us navigate the path that God has given us.

  56. It also helps us to stay on the path that God has given us.

  57. I'll remind you that one of my encouragements for you

  58. as we go through the book of Proverbs

  59. is to be reading it yourself.

  60. One Bible reading plan that's been used by many people in the church

  61. throughout the centuries is the Proverbs reading plan,

  62. which is where you read the chapter of Proverbs

  63. that corresponds with the day of the month.

  64. There's 31 chapters in Proverbs,

  65. and there's at most 31 days in a month.

  66. And so you can always just pick up

  67. with what the chapter is for that day.

  68. Last week,

  69. we looked at verses one through seven,

  70. and we saw what wisdom was.

  71. We also saw that it begins with the fear of the Lord.

  72. The fear of the Lord is not a fear of punishment

  73. because we know from 1 John 4, 18,

  74. that perfect love casts out fear.

  75. Instead, the fear of the Lord,

  76. as we see it in Proverbs,

  77. is characterized by a love of what's good

  78. and a hatred of what's evil.

  79. The fear of the Lord is also characterized

  80. by this rich humility,

  81. this desire to learn and to know God,

  82. this teachability,

  83. this longing for more knowledge about God and his ways.

  84. I gave you one definition from a man who puts it this way.

  85. The fear of the Lord is an attitude of submission,

  86. respect,

  87. dependence,

  88. and worship.

  89. Submission,

  90. respect,

  91. dependence,

  92. and worship.

  93. This week,

  94. we're going to continue our introduction

  95. to the book of Proverbs,

  96. and we're going to be in verses eight and nine.

  97. Now,

  98. if you've listened to many preachers,

  99. you know,

  100. often things are very concise and clear

  101. in three points,

  102. and everything goes exactly together.

  103. As we're looking at the introduction,

  104. though,

  105. we're going to talk about two things

  106. that are related,

  107. but a little bit separate.

  108. First,

  109. we're going to ask this question

  110. about what we do

  111. with the fact that the book of Proverbs

  112. is very masculine in its color.

  113. We have this exhortation in verse eight

  114. to hear my son.

  115. So what do we do with the fact

  116. that it's primarily a relationship

  117. between a son and a father

  118. that's shown here?

  119. And then we're going to continue our discussion

  120. with the fear of the Lord

  121. and ask how do we use the fear of the Lord

  122. to receive wisdom

  123. and grow in wisdom?

  124. If the fear of the Lord

  125. is the beginning of wisdom,

  126. the beginning of knowledge,

  127. how do we proceed on that path

  128. once we've begun?

  129. And that's what we're going to see today

  130. from verses eight and nine.

  131. And so I invite you to turn with me

  132. to the book of Proverbs.

  133. You can open it up

  134. in a new browser on your computer,

  135. open it up on your phone,

  136. or you can turn in your physical Bible

  137. like I have.

  138. And as we come to it,

  139. remember that this is God's word.

  140. In Proverbs chapter 30,

    Proverbs 30 chapter mention

  141. verse five tells us

  142. that every word of God proves true.

  143. He is a shield

  144. to those who take refuge in him.

  145. And so that's why we read it now,

  146. starting at verse eight.

  147. Hear, my son,

  148. your father's instruction

  149. and forsake not your mother's teaching,

  150. for they are a graceful garland

  151. for your head

  152. and pendants

  153. for your neck.

  154. I invite you to pray with me

  155. as we come to this portion

  156. of God's word.

  157. Our father in heaven,

  158. we thank you that you are

  159. a good father

  160. and that you give us

  161. instruction and teaching

  162. that you don't leave us

  163. to figure out this world

  164. on our own,

  165. but instead you walk with us

  166. for those who belong to you.

  167. And so we ask simply this morning

  168. that you would do that,

  169. that you'd send your spirit,

  170. that you'd walk with us

  171. through these words

  172. and that you'd speak

  173. clearly to us,

  174. that we would be convicted

  175. by our need

  176. for your forgiveness

  177. and our need for repentance.

  178. We'd also be encouraged

  179. by the grace

  180. that you offer

  181. through your son.

  182. And it's in his name,

  183. the mighty name of Jesus

  184. that we pray.

  185. Amen.

  186. Amen.

  187. During this time

  188. where we're under the threat

  189. of the coronavirus,

  190. many of you are probably familiar

  191. with the story

  192. of Captain Brett Crozier.

  193. Captain Brett was in charge

  194. of the aircraft carrier,

  195. Theodore Roosevelt,

  196. and there came a point

  197. where he decided

  198. he was going to write a letter

  199. to those who were in authority

  200. over him, above him,

  201. telling them about the situation

  202. occurring on his aircraft carrier

  203. where they were having

  204. an outbreak of the coronavirus.

  205. And asking,

  206. pleading that something be done.

  207. And of course,

  208. whether he intended it

  209. to happen or not,

  210. this letter ended up

  211. becoming a public letter.

  212. So it was written

  213. to those individuals specifically

  214. and ended up being read

  215. by many, many people

  216. who perhaps

  217. it was not intended for.

  218. Now, some people think

  219. he's a hero.

  220. Some people think

  221. he's a villain.

  222. Whichever side you fall on,

  223. that's not the point.

  224. The point is this.

  225. There are many times

  226. where there's a letter

  227. that's written.

  228. There's something that's written

  229. to one person,

  230. but it ends up

  231. either on purpose

  232. or inadvertently

  233. being read by many people.

  234. The book of Proverbs

  235. takes that type of format

  236. in many places.

  237. And we see that here

  238. in verse eight.

  239. It's a letter to a son.

  240. Hear, my son,

  241. your father's instruction.

  242. And we're going to see this

  243. throughout the book

  244. that there's going to be

  245. this masculine color

  246. and character

  247. to the book of Proverbs.

  248. So for example,

  249. we'll see the son

  250. warned about the woman

  251. who might tempt him.

  252. But we're not going to see

  253. women warned about men

  254. who might tempt them.

  255. And so that raises a question

  256. for thoughtful readers.

  257. What do we do with that?

  258. Why is the book

  259. set up in that way?

  260. And how can women

  261. access this book

  262. when it has that color to it?

  263. I'm going to give you,

  264. as I say often,

  265. when I talk about things

  266. that are more controversial,

  267. I'm going to say something,

  268. but not everything.

  269. And so there are a few things,

  270. a few hints

  271. that we have

  272. at the beginning here.

  273. First of all,

  274. there are things

  275. that are time-bound

  276. and things that are timeless.

  277. One thing that's time-bound here

  278. is that in the ancient Near East,

  279. there was a wisdom genre.

  280. So the book of Proverbs

  281. is not alone

  282. in being a book about wisdom.

  283. There were other wisdom books

  284. during that time

  285. in the ancient Near East,

  286. and they would take

  287. a similar approach.

  288. They also would teach wisdom

  289. through the lens

  290. of a father talking to his son.

  291. And so that reminds us,

  292. it highlights something for us

  293. about the character of God.

  294. God always speaks to his people

  295. in a way that meets them

  296. where they're at.

  297. God speaks to his people

  298. in a way that meets them

  299. where they're at.

  300. So it makes sense

  301. that God would reveal himself

  302. in his word in this way

  303. because it was a genre

  304. that people at that time

  305. were familiar with.

  306. And that's something

  307. that's time-bound.

  308. We are not as familiar

  309. with that genre,

  310. and so it takes some skill

  311. for us to read

  312. the book of Proverbs

  313. that it might not have taken

  314. or might not have required

  315. as much thinking

  316. from someone at that time.

  317. I mentioned this last week,

  318. by the way,

  319. that that's part of wisdom

  320. from verses one through seven.

  321. Verse six,

  322. wisdom is understanding

  323. a proverb and a saying,

  324. the words of the wise

  325. and their riddles.

  326. In other words,

  327. there's a wisdom

  328. to reading wisdom.

  329. And so that's something

  330. that's time-bound.

  331. What's timeless, however,

  332. is that there is this sense

  333. that God has made the world

  334. in such a way

  335. that men have a special level

  336. of power and authority

  337. and responsibility.

  338. And what the book of Proverbs does

  339. is it highlights

  340. what that is for.

  341. It reminds us

  342. that some of the privileges

  343. that men experience

  344. in this world

  345. are not at all

  346. for their comfort

  347. or their convenience.

  348. Instead,

  349. authority and power

  350. is to be used

  351. for other people.

  352. It's for sacrifice.

  353. It's for service.

  354. And it's for protection.

  355. So this book

  356. is going to be a book

  357. that talks to men

  358. about those things.

  359. It's a book

  360. about accountability

  361. and responsibility.

  362. Some of you know

  363. if you've been tracking

  364. with our Friday emails

  365. that I've started a podcast

  366. on the book of Proverbs

  367. to accompany this.

  368. And I had a wonderful conversation

  369. with a man named Zach Eswine.

  370. And you can find this

  371. on our website.

  372. And we talked about

  373. this very aspect.

  374. And he highlighted the fact

  375. that this book

  376. puts on display

  377. what's expected

  378. of people

  379. who are in authority.

  380. In other words,

  381. it makes them

  382. even more accountable

  383. than they were before.

  384. And so we should not

  385. see this as a book

  386. that is somehow

  387. giving men privileges

  388. or giving them power

  389. in some way.

  390. Instead, it's recognizing

  391. there is sometimes

  392. a power there

  393. and there needs to be

  394. tremendous accountability.

  395. This, by the way,

  396. ties into what happened

  397. with Captain Crozier, right?

  398. He writes this letter

  399. and it creates pressure.

  400. It creates increased

  401. accountability on the Navy.

  402. Same thing is true

  403. for Proverbs.

  404. We should be able

  405. to look at men

  406. in power and authority

  407. and say,

  408. and the book of Proverbs

  409. says you need to act

  410. in this way.

  411. You need to act

  412. in a way that preserves

  413. justice and life

  414. rather than does away with it.

  415. You need to act

  416. in a way that lifts people up

  417. rather than tears them down.

  418. You need to act

  419. in a way that's responsible,

  420. that protects

  421. the dignity of other people.

  422. And so the book of Proverbs

  423. subverts

  424. what we might see

  425. in this world

  426. from powerful men.

  427. It's also written

  428. in that way

  429. because this is writing

  430. to someone

  431. who's going to become a king

  432. and this male king

  433. is going to be someone

  434. who sets the tone

  435. for the nation.

  436. So it's incredibly important

  437. that he have wisdom.

  438. It's not that it's not important

  439. that others don't,

  440. but we want that wisdom

  441. from him

  442. to be passed

  443. from the top

  444. all the way down.

  445. We see this highlighted,

  446. by the way,

  447. in Proverbs chapter 31.

    Proverbs 31 chapter mention

  448. Lemuel is the name

  449. of a king

  450. and Lemuel

  451. is given some instruction

  452. by his mom,

  453. by the way.

  454. We'll talk about that

  455. in a minute,

  456. about how to use wine.

  457. And she helps him understand

  458. that there's a different standard

  459. for someone in power

  460. when it comes to alcohol,

  461. a higher standard.

  462. So it's not that he has

  463. more privileges,

  464. it's that he has

  465. more responsibility.

  466. It's not that he has

  467. more power,

  468. but that he has

  469. more accountability.

  470. The other thing

  471. we need to highlight here

  472. is that in the world

  473. of wisdom,

  474. wise men

  475. learn from women.

  476. In the world of wisdom,

  477. wise men

  478. learn from wisdom.

  479. We're going to see

  480. in verse 8 here,

  481. it's not just

  482. the father's instruction,

  483. but the mother's instruction.

  484. We're going to see

  485. in the book of Proverbs

  486. that wisdom

  487. is personified

  488. not as a man,

  489. but as a woman.

  490. And we'll also see

  491. something interesting

  492. in Proverbs 31.

  493. I mentioned before,

  494. Proverbs 31,

  495. we see this king

  496. named King Lemuel

  497. who is being taught

  498. by his mother.

  499. Now, if you've been

  500. a Christian for a while,

  501. you're familiar

  502. with the Bible,

  503. you know that the book

  504. of Proverbs

  505. has this chapter

  506. at the very end

  507. that's talked about

  508. all the time

  509. and people will talk

  510. constantly about

  511. the Proverbs 31 woman

  512. and you might see books

  513. about the Proverbs 31 woman.

  514. You might see articles

  515. about them,

  516. people talking about them

  517. and sometimes it feels

  518. overwhelming, right,

  519. because there's this woman

  520. who seems impossible

  521. to follow

  522. in terms of her example.

  523. That's fascinating

  524. because Proverbs 31

  525. is not written to women.

  526. It's actually written to men.

  527. And so,

  528. my hope is that

  529. when I'm old and gray

  530. and potentially wise,

  531. I will write a book

  532. called Becoming

  533. the Proverbs 31 man.

  534. And the Proverbs 31 man

  535. is going to have

  536. several chapters in it.

  537. Chapter 1,

  538. which is going to come

  539. from Proverbs 31

    Proverbs 31:1–9

  540. verses 1 through 9,

  541. the Proverbs 31 man

  542. listens carefully

  543. to his mom.

  544. That's what King Lemuel does.

  545. He's instructed

  546. by his mom in wisdom.

  547. Then we're going to see

  548. in chapter 2,

  549. the Proverbs 31 man

  550. listens very carefully

  551. to his wife.

  552. We're told in Proverbs 31

    Proverbs 31:11

  553. verse 11

  554. that the heart

  555. of the husband

  556. trusts in his wife.

  557. And of course,

  558. if you trust in someone,

  559. you are of course

  560. going to want

  561. their counsel

  562. and their advice.

  563. You're going to give

  564. tremendous weight to that.

  565. That's only chapter 2 though.

  566. Chapter 3,

  567. the Proverbs 31 man

  568. is going to publicly praise

  569. his mom and his wife

  570. because that's again

  571. what we see

  572. in Proverbs 31

    Proverbs 31:28

  573. verse 28.

  574. So as we come

  575. to the book of Proverbs

  576. and we have a book

  577. that's about a son

  578. and a father.

  579. It's important

  580. to remind ourselves

  581. and remember

  582. that women

  583. are part of the chorus

  584. teaching wisdom

  585. to these men

  586. and that wise men

  587. listen very carefully

  588. to the words of women.

  589. Wise men

  590. listen very carefully

  591. to the words of women.

  592. They want to be

  593. Proverbs 31 men.

  594. Men who listen

  595. to their mom,

  596. listen to their wives

  597. and praise them publicly.

  598. In the midst of that

  599. there's still

  600. the predominant voice

  601. of the father here

  602. in the book of Proverbs

  603. and so that reminds us

  604. this is a family context

  605. much like the church

  606. where we want

  607. strong fathers

  608. and husbands

  609. leading their families

  610. and teaching them wisdom.

  611. Finally,

  612. I'll point out to you

  613. this is a book

  614. for everyone

  615. as we're reminded

  616. in verses 4 through 6

  617. from last week.

  618. It's for the simple.

  619. It's for the wise.

  620. It's for the youth.

  621. And so being wise

  622. in wisdom

  623. is reminding us

  624. that it's for everyone, right?

  625. This is written to a son

  626. but it's an adolescent male.

  627. So even if we're men

  628. very few of us

  629. are adolescent males.

  630. And if we're an adolescent male

  631. very few of us

  632. probably none of us

  633. are preparing to become

  634. the king of Israel.

  635. And so all of us

  636. have to take a reading strategy

  637. where we look

  638. at the original audience

  639. and we figure out

  640. what's meant for us.

  641. Now this might sound

  642. like a bunny trail

  643. at the beginning

  644. but it's going to be important

  645. for us as we go along

  646. the book of Proverbs

  647. because we're going to encounter

  648. this type of issue

  649. over and over

  650. and so we will just

  651. talk about it

  652. as we go along.

  653. Again, I haven't said

  654. everything here today

  655. but I've said something.

  656. It's tempting

  657. in our culture

  658. to hear this story

  659. about the relationship

  660. between men and women

  661. as what we would call

  662. in game theory

  663. a zero-sum game

  664. which means that

  665. whenever one wins

  666. the other loses.

  667. But in fact

  668. the vision that the Bible

  669. gives us is very different.

  670. It's a cooperative effort

  671. that men and women

  672. are working together

  673. cooperating side by side

  674. building each other up

  675. and using their strengths

  676. to help each other.

  677. Of course that's a perfect segue

  678. because we've talked about

  679. hear my son

  680. and now we're going to

  681. look at what the son hears.

  682. Verse 8

  683. Your father's instruction

  684. and your mother's teaching.

  685. So both the mother

  686. and the father

  687. are working together.

  688. The Bible sees the wisdom

  689. as something that

  690. both of them know

  691. and both of them teach.

  692. By the way

  693. as this is a genre

  694. from the ancient Near East

  695. as often happens

  696. with the Bible

  697. it uses a genre

  698. and it subverts it.

  699. And so the voice

  700. of the mother

  701. is going to appear here

  702. in the book of Proverbs

  703. more than it does

  704. in the secular wisdom literature

  705. that surrounds it

  706. as the time.

  707. It's unusual.

  708. It's surprising here

  709. should be for those

  710. reading it

  711. that the mother is mentioned.

  712. However as people

  713. who know God's heart

  714. for his people

  715. it should not surprise us

  716. at all.

  717. God sees the family

  718. as this school

  719. of wisdom

  720. and these words here

  721. we see instruction

  722. and teaching.

  723. There's a school aspect

  724. to those words

  725. and an aspect

  726. of talking

  727. and instructing

  728. and there's also

  729. a boot camp aspect

  730. that's captured

  731. by these words.

  732. There's an aspect

  733. of discipline

  734. and training

  735. and punishment.

  736. And so the Christian home

  737. that we see here

  738. is a school

  739. for wisdom.

  740. It's a place

  741. where wisdom

  742. is taught

  743. and acted out

  744. not just in words

  745. but in discipline

  746. and training.

  747. And so the initial

  748. application for us

  749. is this.

  750. Remember we're asking

  751. this question

  752. how do we use

  753. the fear of the Lord

  754. to receive

  755. and grow

  756. in wisdom?

  757. And the first way

  758. is this.

  759. Fathers and mothers

  760. are diligently

  761. training their children

  762. in wisdom.

  763. They're instructing them.

  764. They're talking with them

  765. about the ways

  766. of the Lord.

  767. They're giving them

  768. punishment when necessary

  769. not to be vindictive

  770. because they love

  771. their children

  772. and they want them

  773. to walk in the ways

  774. that are right.

  775. Proverbs 13 verse 24

    Proverbs 13:24

  776. tells us this.

  777. Whoever spares the rod

  778. hates his son

  779. but he who loves him

  780. is diligent

  781. to discipline him.

  782. And so this discipline

  783. is not for the convenience

  784. or the comfort

  785. of the parents.

  786. Instead it's doing

  787. what's hard

  788. for the sake

  789. of their children.

  790. Like the Proverbs

  791. is saying something

  792. very stark here.

  793. if you won't discipline

  794. your children

  795. if you won't teach

  796. them wisdom

  797. you actually hate them.

  798. Because the one

  799. who wants what's good

  800. and right for their kids

  801. wants them to learn

  802. lessons when they're

  803. easy to learn

  804. rather than learn them

  805. when they're hard.

  806. Imagine this.

  807. Which one is easier?

  808. Is it easier

  809. to receive punishment

  810. when you're eight years old

  811. for stealing five dollars?

  812. Or is it easier

  813. to receive punishment

  814. when you're 35 years old

  815. or 65 years old

  816. for stealing five million dollars?

  817. The answer's obvious, right?

  818. It's much better

  819. that you learn

  820. that lesson

  821. in a small way

  822. when you're young

  823. than have to learn

  824. in a large way

  825. when you're old.

  826. And so that's part

  827. of the reason

  828. there's this emphasis

  829. for the youth here

  830. in the book of Proverbs.

  831. Deuteronomy chapter 6

    Deuteronomy 6 chapter mention

  832. tells us about this.

  833. There's this instruction

  834. and wisdom

  835. that happens

  836. in the Christian family

  837. that's about all of life

  838. and it's in all of life.

  839. Deuteronomy chapter 6

    Deuteronomy 6:7

  840. verse 7

  841. tells us this.

  842. You shall teach them

  843. diligently to your children

  844. talking about God's ways

  845. and shall talk of them

  846. when you sit in the house

  847. and when you walk by the way

  848. and when you lie down

  849. and when you rise.

  850. Wisdom is something

  851. that's trained constantly

  852. by mothers,

  853. by fathers

  854. to their children.

  855. the command here

  856. is not to the parents.

  857. That's what's implied here

  858. but to the son.

  859. It's the child here

  860. that's supposed to hear

  861. the father's instruction

  862. and not forsake

  863. the mother's teaching.

  864. And these are not just

  865. cognitive words.

  866. These are words of obedience.

  867. This hear word includes,

  868. it implies,

  869. that it's going to be

  870. followed by

  871. obeying what's heard.

  872. And so it's not just

  873. that parents are responsible

  874. to their children

  875. but children are responsible

  876. to their parents.

  877. And so our question

  878. would be this.

  879. Do you fear the Lord, kids?

  880. Would we know

  881. that you fear the Lord

  882. based on the way

  883. you respond

  884. when your parents

  885. teach you

  886. and correct you?

  887. Are you willing

  888. to hear your father's instruction

  889. and not forsake

  890. your mother's teaching?

  891. There's a reward here

  892. by the way.

  893. It says in verse 9

  894. for they are a graceful garland

  895. for your head

  896. and pendants

  897. for your neck.

  898. Now there's many ideas

  899. about what's being referred

  900. to here.

  901. I would say simply

  902. these are symbols

  903. of prosperity

  904. and life.

  905. Do you want

  906. to have

  907. a life

  908. that's well lived?

  909. Do you want

  910. to prosper in life?

  911. Do you want

  912. to succeed?

  913. Do you want

  914. to take hold

  915. of what Jesus

  916. offers us

  917. in the gospel?

  918. If you do

  919. the call

  920. for you

  921. is obedience

  922. and obedience

  923. to your parents.

  924. Proverbs

    Proverbs 20:11

  925. chapter 20

  926. verse 11

  927. tells us this

  928. even a child

  929. makes himself

  930. known by his acts

  931. by whether his conduct

  932. is pure

  933. and upright.

  934. Do you want

  935. to learn

  936. in small ways

  937. so you don't

  938. have to learn

  939. in big ways?

  940. Do you want

  941. to learn

  942. when the punishment

  943. and the stakes

  944. are low?

  945. Or do you

  946. want to learn

  947. when they're high?

  948. Of course

  949. a wise person

  950. wants to learn

  951. when they're low.

  952. A wise child

  953. wants to learn

  954. and gain

  955. as much

  956. from their parents

  957. as they can.

  958. If you go

  959. on post

  960. to Fort Carson

  961. or really

  962. any of the other

  963. bases here in town

  964. and you go

  965. into one of the

  966. gyms there

  967. you'll probably

  968. see a sign

  969. that says

  970. something like this.

  971. The more

  972. you sweat

  973. in training

  974. the less

  975. you bleed

  976. in battle.

  977. the more

  978. you sweat

  979. in training

  980. the less

  981. you bleed

  982. in battle.

  983. The Christian

  984. home

  985. is a place

  986. of training

  987. and when you

  988. go out

  989. into the world

  990. when you leave

  991. your parents

  992. house

  993. you will be

  994. in the real

  995. battlefield

  996. and so choose

  997. the sweat

  998. rather than

  999. the blood.

  1000. Choose

  1001. to learn

  1002. now

  1003. when the

  1004. stakes

  1005. are low

  1006. rather than

  1007. later

  1008. when the

  1009. stakes

  1010. are high.

  1011. Don't

  1012. reject

  1013. and become

  1014. bitter

  1015. at your

  1016. parents

  1017. discipline

  1018. and instruction.

  1019. Instead

  1020. embracing

  1021. it

  1022. knowing

  1023. that it's

  1024. the way

  1025. to life.

  1026. That is

  1027. the way

  1028. you will

  1029. have a

  1030. graceful

  1031. garland

  1032. for your

  1033. head

  1034. and pendants

  1035. for your

  1036. neck.

  1037. And so

  1038. how is it

  1039. that we

  1040. use the

  1041. fear of the

  1042. Lord to

  1043. receive

  1044. and take

  1045. hold of

  1046. wisdom?

  1047. Well we

  1048. do it

  1049. as we

  1050. embrace

  1051. discipline

  1052. and

  1053. instruction.

  1054. Parents

  1055. giving it

  1056. and forming

  1057. it in

  1058. their

  1059. children.

  1060. Children

  1061. honoring

  1062. it and

  1063. receiving

  1064. it

  1065. from

  1066. their

  1067. parents.

  1068. As I

  1069. mentioned

  1070. earlier

  1071. though

  1072. we need

  1073. to be

  1074. wise

  1075. in reading

  1076. Proverbs

  1077. and so

  1078. we don't

  1079. take this

  1080. rigidly

  1081. as just

  1082. being

  1083. between

  1084. parents

  1085. and

  1086. children.

  1087. There's

  1088. a wisdom

  1089. to knowing

  1090. how to

  1091. read

  1092. wisdom

  1093. literature.

  1094. That's

  1095. why it

  1096. says in

  1097. Proverbs

    Proverbs 1:2

  1098. chapter 1

  1099. verse 2

  1100. the goal

  1101. here is to

  1102. understand

  1103. words of

  1104. insight.

  1105. So how

  1106. do we

  1107. understand

  1108. these words

  1109. of insight

  1110. if we're

  1111. not parents?

  1112. Maybe we're

  1113. not children.

  1114. Maybe we have

  1115. children but

  1116. they're out of

  1117. the home.

  1118. Maybe you're

  1119. single.

  1120. Well this

  1121. book of

  1122. course isn't

  1123. a public

  1124. letter right?

  1125. It's written

  1126. for many

  1127. people to

  1128. listen in and

  1129. so there's a

  1130. broader

  1131. principle that

  1132. all of us

  1133. can take

  1134. from this

  1135. and it's

  1136. this.

  1137. wisdom is

  1138. a community

  1139. project,

  1140. a group

  1141. project,

  1142. a family

  1143. project.

  1144. Wisdom is

  1145. something we

  1146. work on

  1147. together and

  1148. wisdom is

  1149. also something

  1150. that some

  1151. people have

  1152. more of

  1153. than other

  1154. people.

  1155. Our

  1156. expectation

  1157. is that

  1158. older people

  1159. hopefully have

  1160. more wisdom

  1161. than younger

  1162. people.

  1163. People with

  1164. more life

  1165. experience or

  1166. certain types

  1167. of experiences

  1168. have more

  1169. wisdom than

  1170. those who

  1171. have not

  1172. had those

  1173. experiences.

  1174. And so the

  1175. broader

  1176. principle is

  1177. this,

  1178. listen to

  1179. the wise.

  1180. Receive

  1181. correction and

  1182. instruction.

  1183. This is the

  1184. vision that the

  1185. Bible gives us

  1186. not just for

  1187. the nuclear

  1188. family but also

  1189. for our church

  1190. family.

  1191. We see in

  1192. Titus chapter 2

    Titus 2 chapter mention

  1193. that it's older

  1194. women teaching

  1195. younger women.

  1196. It's younger

  1197. men who are

  1198. supposed to be

  1199. subject to the

  1200. elders also in

  1201. Titus 2 and in

  1202. 1 Peter chapter 5.

    1 Peter 5 chapter mention

  1203. There's this

  1204. dynamic where the

  1205. less wise are

  1206. submitting themselves

  1207. to the more

  1208. wise.

  1209. There's this

  1210. recognition that

  1211. all of us in

  1212. life are in

  1213. places where we

  1214. don't have all

  1215. the wisdom we

  1216. need but God's

  1217. given us a

  1218. community that

  1219. surrounds us and

  1220. he tells us to

  1221. embrace the

  1222. wisdom that's

  1223. there.

  1224. Proverbs chapter

    Proverbs 13:20

  1225. 13 verse 20

  1226. tells us that he

  1227. who walks with

  1228. the wise grows

  1229. wise.

  1230. And so if we

  1231. want to embrace

  1232. wisdom, if we

  1233. want to grow in

  1234. wisdom, if we

  1235. want the type of

  1236. knowledge that

  1237. comes from the

  1238. fear of the

  1239. Lord, we need

  1240. to find wise

  1241. people.

  1242. And submit to

  1243. their instruction

  1244. and their

  1245. discipline.

  1246. Wisdom is not

  1247. connected to the

  1248. size of your

  1249. library.

  1250. Wisdom is instead

  1251. connected to the

  1252. size of your

  1253. humility.

  1254. Wisdom is not

  1255. connected to the

  1256. size of your

  1257. library.

  1258. Wisdom is not

  1259. connected to the

  1260. length of your

  1261. resume.

  1262. Wisdom is

  1263. directly connected

  1264. to how much

  1265. humility you

  1266. have.

  1267. There's one man

  1268. who says this and

  1269. he puts it very

  1270. starkly.

  1271. Hearts that are

  1272. not humble are

  1273. hearts that are

  1274. not really

  1275. connected with

  1276. the Lord.

  1277. One cannot

  1278. know God and

  1279. hold on to a

  1280. proud heart at

  1281. the same time.

  1282. Hearts that are

  1283. humble are not

  1284. humble are

  1285. hearts that are

  1286. not really

  1287. connected with

  1288. the Lord.

  1289. One cannot

  1290. know God and

  1291. hold on to a

  1292. proud heart at

  1293. the same time.

  1294. We cannot

  1295. believe that we

  1296. know what we

  1297. need to know and

  1298. also grow in

  1299. wisdom.

  1300. it's a rich and

  1301. deep humility that

  1302. allows us to

  1303. embrace wisdom and

  1304. grow in it.

  1305. When I was in

  1306. seminary and I

  1307. took a class on

  1308. Proverbs I had a

  1309. wise instructor and

  1310. he understood this

  1311. concept.

  1312. He knew that it

  1313. wasn't going to be

  1314. helpful for his

  1315. class just to

  1316. receive words from

  1317. him about the

  1318. book of Proverbs

1319. and so he gave an

  1320. optional assignment

  1321. to students a

  1322. challenge and it

  1323. was this.

  1324. Go home and

  1325. since humility is

  1326. the beginning of

  1327. wisdom ask your

  1328. spouse if you're

  1329. married or ask a

  1330. good friend if

  1331. you're not how

  1332. good am I at

  1333. receiving correction?

  1334. How free do you

  1335. as my spouse feel

  1336. in giving me

  1337. feedback?

  1338. And when you do

  1339. how do I respond

  1340. to that?

1341. In other words am I

  1342. a humble person and

  1343. am I willing to

  1344. grow in wisdom?

  1345. That would be a

  1346. good challenge for

  1347. us.

1348. Kids it would be a

  1349. good challenge for

  1350. you.

  1351. Ask your parents

  1352. how wise am I?

1353. What can I do to

  1354. be better at

  1355. responding and

  1356. receiving correction?

  1357. Over the coming

  1358. weeks he would ask

  1359. students to report

  1360. in.

  1361. Hey who has

  1362. completed the

  1363. project and what

  1364. did you hear?

  1365. And there were

  1366. some brave souls

  1367. who undertook it.

  1368. Some of them

  1369. reported things that

  1370. were somewhat

  1371. encouraging and some

  1372. of them had heard

  1373. things that were

  1374. very very hard.

  1375. these are people

  1376. who are training

  1377. in a seminary to

  1378. know God

  1379. challenged to see

  1380. how much they

  1381. actually knew God

  1382. not by a test

  1383. not by a paper

  1384. or an exam

  1385. but by the

  1386. demonstration of

  1387. humility in their

  1388. lives and their

  1389. relationships.

  1390. relationships.

  1391. During my time in

  1392. the church I have

  1393. met very many

  1394. people who are

  1395. eager to talk and

1396. have a lot to say.

  1397. I have met very

  1398. few people who are

  1399. eager to listen and

  1400. have a lot of

  1401. questions to ask.

  1402. I have met very

  1403. many people who are

  1404. eager to talk and

1405. have a lot to say.

  1406. I have met fewer

  1407. people who are eager

  1408. to listen and have

  1409. a lot of questions.

1410. One of those is the

1411. way of the wise and

1412. one is the way of

  1413. the fool.

  1414. James chapter 1

    James 1:19–20

  1415. verses 19 through 20

1416. tells us to be quick

1417. to listen and slow to

  1418. speak.

1419. And yet so many of us

  1420. are quick to speak

  1421. and slow to listen.

  1422. Remember that the

1423. fear of the Lord is

  1424. an attitude of

  1425. submission, respect,

  1426. dependence, and

  1427. worship.

  1428. It's about humility,

  1429. obedience, and

  1430. submission.

  1431. Fear of the Lord

  1432. reveals itself in how

  1433. we interact with

  1434. others.

  1435. How much wisdom we

  1436. have reveals itself in

  1437. how we interact with

  1438. others?

1439. So are we open to

  1440. correction?

1441. How do you respond when

  1442. you receive feedback

  1443. that's negative?

  1444. Proverbs chapter 27

    Proverbs 27:6

1445. verse 6 tells us this,

  1446. faithful are the

  1447. wounds of a friend,

  1448. profuse are the kisses

  1449. of an enemy.

  1450. When you receive a

  1451. wound from a friend,

  1452. do you consider it

  1453. faithful?

  1454. Or would you rather

  1455. receive kisses from

  1456. an enemy?

  1457. Do we welcome the

  1458. input of those who

  1459. are wiser and older?

1460. Do we seek it out?

1461. Or do we think we

  1462. already have all the

  1463. answers?

  1464. Do we resent feedback

  1465. when we receive it,

1466. or do we welcome it?

  1467. Do we apply it?

1468. Do we learn and move

  1469. forward with the

  1470. lessons that God's

  1471. given us?

  1472. Do we choose

  1473. growing and learning,

1474. over the need to be

  1475. right?

  1476. Do we choose

  1477. growing and learning

1478. over the need to be

  1479. right?

  1480. The gospel,

1481. the very entry to the

  1482. gospel,

1483. the fear of the Lord,

  1484. means admitting that

  1485. we're not right.

  1486. It's possible to be

  1487. able to explain the

  1488. doctrine of

  1489. justification in

  1490. detail,

  1491. the doctrine that

  1492. tells us that God

  1493. has paid our sins

  1494. and we're right with

  1495. him,

  1496. and at the same

  1497. time still be

  1498. desperate.

  1499. for other people to

  1500. believe that we've

  1501. got it all together.

  1502. It's easy to know

  1503. the doctrine of

  1504. justification in

1505. detail and be able to

  1506. explain it,

  1507. and still be desperate

  1508. for other people to

1509. believe that we have it

  1510. all together.

  1511. And yet true wisdom

  1512. here is characterized

  1513. by humility.

  1514. It's someone who's

  1515. open to instruction

  1516. and teaching.

1517. Our Lord Jesus tells us

  1518. the same thing as

  1519. well.

  1520. We saw last week

  1521. from Matthew chapter

    Matthew 12:42

  1522. 12,

  1523. verse 42,

  1524. that Jesus tells us

  1525. he's greater than

  1526. Solomon.

  1527. Solomon,

  1528. who's the author of

  1529. this book of wisdom.

  1530. Solomon knew wisdom.

  1531. Jesus is wisdom.

  1532. He's an even greater

  1533. wisdom teacher than the

  1534. author of this book,

1535. and he himself tells us

1536. about what it takes to

  1537. receive the kingdom.

  1538. him.

  1539. In Matthew chapter 18,

    Matthew 18 chapter mention

1540. it tells us a story

  1541. about the disciples

  1542. coming to Jesus,

  1543. and they say,

  1544. who is the greatest

  1545. in the kingdom of

  1546. heaven?

  1547. It says,

1548. Jesus called to him a

  1549. child.

1550. He put him in the midst

  1551. of them and said,

1552. truly I say to you,

  1553. unless you turn and

  1554. become like children,

  1555. you will never enter

  1556. the kingdom of heaven.

  1557. Whoever humbles

  1558. himself like this

  1559. child is the greatest

  1560. in the kingdom of

  1561. heaven.

1562. Do you want to enter

  1563. the kingdom of heaven?

1564. Do you want to be

  1565. what Jesus calls the

  1566. greatest here?

1567. Do you want to be

  1568. wise?

  1569. And you have to

  1570. humble yourself

  1571. like a child.

  1572. You have to be

  1573. characterized by

  1574. dependence,

  1575. obedience,

  1576. and submission.

  1577. Jesus then goes on

  1578. to tell us in

  1579. Matthew chapter 19,

    Matthew 19 chapter mention

  1580. we hear that children

  1581. are brought to him

  1582. that he might lay

  1583. his hands on them

  1584. and pray.

  1585. The disciples

  1586. rebuked the people,

  1587. but Jesus said,

  1588. let the little

  1589. children come to me

  1590. and do not hinder

  1591. them,

  1592. for to such

  1593. belongs the

  1594. kingdom of heaven.

  1595. And he laid his

  1596. hands on them

  1597. and went away.

  1598. Our Lord Jesus,

  1599. the great teacher

  1600. of wisdom,

  1601. tells us

  1602. even more

  1603. than what we

  1604. see here in

  1605. Proverbs chapter 1

    Proverbs 1:8

  1606. verses 8 and 9,

1607. which is that if we

  1608. want to receive

  1609. the kingdom,

  1610. if we want to

  1611. belong to him

  1612. as his children,

  1613. then we must

  1614. become like

  1615. children.

  1616. We have to know

  1617. and understand

  1618. not how much

  1619. we've mastered,

  1620. but how much

  1621. we have to learn.

  1622. we don't protect

  1623. believing that we

  1624. have to convince

  1625. other people

  1626. that we've arrived,

  1627. but instead we

  1628. confess that we

  1629. haven't arrived.

  1630. In fact,

  1631. that's the heart

  1632. of the gospel,

  1633. right?

  1634. We cannot call

  1635. ourselves a Christian

  1636. if we've not

  1637. confessed our

  1638. desperate need

  1639. of God's grace

  1640. and his wisdom.

  1641. The gospel is not

  1642. for people who

  1643. get it right,

  1644. who are perfect.

  1645. The gospel is for

  1646. people who don't

  1647. get it right and

  1648. aren't perfect

  1649. and are humble

  1650. enough to admit it

  1651. and seek to grow.

  1652. They're humble

  1653. enough and secure

  1654. enough in Jesus

  1655. and his love

1656. to be able to say,

  1657. I need to learn

  1658. and I'm not right.

  1659. It's enough to admit

  1660. our need for God's

  1661. grace and to run

  1662. to it.

  1663. Jesus accepts us

  1664. as we are

  1665. and as we saw,

  1666. even with the

  1667. genre of this book,

  1668. he meets us

  1669. where we are.

  1670. And so the gospel

  1671. requires us to be

  1672. honest,

  1673. about where we are,

  1674. requires us to be

  1675. humble.

  1676. Wisdom is only

  1677. for the humble.

  1678. As Jesus tells us

  1679. in Matthew chapter

    Matthew 18 chapter mention

  1680. 18 and 19,

  1681. his kingdom

  1682. is only for the

  1683. humble as well.

  1684. So how is it

  1685. that we use

1686. the fear of the Lord

  1687. to receive

  1688. and grow in wisdom?

1689. Well, we have to be

  1690. people who are

  1691. characterized by

  1692. humility as well.

  1693. There's a family

  1694. wisdom.

  1695. We're learning

  1696. from one another.

  1697. There's a rich

  1698. humility

  1699. following after

  1700. Jesus as a family

  1701. because we've been

  1702. adopted by him

  1703. into his family.

  1704. Jesus is the one

  1705. who empowers us

  1706. to be humble

  1707. and he's the one

  1708. who provides us

  1709. with the community

  1710. that surrounds us

  1711. that actually has

  1712. the true wisdom

  1713. that he's given us

  1714. through others

  1715. and he's given us

  1716. through his word.

1717. And so he's the one

  1718. who provides

  1719. the wisdom

  1720. that comes

  1721. from humility.

  1722. The wisdom

  1723. that comes

  1724. from those around us

  1725. and the wisdom

  1726. that comes to us

  1727. through his instruction

  1728. and his word.

  1729. Proverbs chapter 30

    Proverbs 30:5

  1730. verse 5

  1731. tells us

  1732. that every word

  1733. of God

  1734. proves true.

  1735. He is a refuge

  1736. to those

  1737. he's a shield

  1738. to those

  1739. who take refuge

  1740. in him.

  1741. And so it's

  1742. with that hope

  1743. and that promise

  1744. that we come

  1745. to him

  1746. in humility

  1747. looking to grow

  1748. in wisdom.

1749. And so I invite you

  1750. to come and pray

  1751. with me now

  1752. that we would be

  1753. those kinds of people

  1754. humble people

  1755. coming to Jesus

  1756. admitting our need

  1757. and looking for

  1758. his wisdom

  1759. and his forgiveness.

1760. So please pray with me.

  1761. Our Father in heaven

  1762. we thank you

  1763. that you've given us

  1764. your word

  1765. we thank you

  1766. that you use it

  1767. to pierce

  1768. through bone and marrow

  1769. you use it

  1770. to pierce our hearts

  1771. to convict us

1772. of our need for you

  1773. and to show us

  1774. the hope

  1775. that you offer us

  1776. in Jesus.

  1777. We ask that you'd

1778. continue to do this now

1779. that for those of us

  1780. who are proud

  1781. you would give us

  1782. hearts of humility.

  1783. For those of us

  1784. who are bitter

  1785. towards instruction

  1786. you would make us

  1787. open to it.

  1788. Most of all

  1789. we ask that you

  1790. would make Jesus

  1791. more beautiful

  1792. and glorious to us

  1793. that we would see

  1794. the security

  1795. the confidence

1796. that we have in him

1797. and so we'd be able

  1798. to say

  1799. Jesus is perfect

  1800. and so I'm free

  1801. to admit I'm not

1802. but Jesus is also loving

1803. and so he's going to

1804. walk with me to grow.

  1805. We ask these things

  1806. praising you

  1807. that we don't have

  1808. to earn them

  1809. by our wisdom

1810. but we can ask them

  1811. to you

  1812. in our foolishness

  1813. coming to you

  1814. in humility

  1815. knowing that Jesus

  1816. will cover them

1817. and so we ask it

  1818. in his name

  1819. amen.

  1820. We're going to end

  1821. our time

  1822. together with a benediction

  1823. and I remind you

  1824. that a benediction

  1825. is a good word

  1826. from God.

  1827. It's a word

  1828. that's true

  1829. in the midst

  1830. of a world

  1831. filled with words

  1832. that are not true.

  1833. It's tradition

  1834. for the minister

1835. to hold up his hand

1836. to send out God's blessing

  1837. on God's people

  1838. and for God's people

1839. to hold out their hands

  1840. to receive God's blessing.

  1841. And so hear now

  1842. God's good word

  1843. over you

  1844. from Numbers chapter 6.

    Numbers 6 chapter mention

  1845. The Lord bless you

  1846. and keep you.

1847. The Lord make his face

  1848. to shine upon you

1849. and be gracious to you.

  1850. The Lord lift up

  1851. his countenance upon you

  1852. and give you peace

  1853. now and forever.

  1854. So go now

1855. in the grace and peace

1856. of our Lord and Savior

  1857. Jesus Christ.

  1858. Amen.
