  1. Amen. Good morning. I won't introduce myself because I know all of you.

  2. It's good to be back with you again. Good to see so many of you after so long.

  3. Thanks for your commitment to this community and so many of you who have tuned in from afar and

  4. so many of you who have stepped up and served in new ways and continued serving in old ways.

  5. We just praise God for the way he's held us together as one community following Jesus together.

  6. This morning we're going to continue in the book of Proverbs.

  7. If you've been with us, you know we started that a few weeks ago.

  8. The book of Proverbs is a book about wisdom.

  9. Wisdom is skill and the art of living.

  10. It's how we navigate the path that God's given us in this life and it's how we stay on the path.

  11. The beginning of wisdom, its very start, its foundation is the fear of the Lord,

  12. which I've been telling you from one man is an attitude of submission, respect, dependence, and worship.

  13. And as it begins with the fear of the Lord, it continues with a characteristic of humility and teachability.

  14. We start with the fear of the Lord, but if we want to grow in wisdom, we want to continue in wisdom.

  15. We have to be people who are humble, who are willing to learn.

  16. Now, if there's anything we've learned over the last few months,

  17. certainly that the foundations, the things that we rested on in this world are perhaps a little less secure than we thought they were.

  18. The world's maybe a little more fragile than we would have admitted last year or realized.

  19. And sometimes there's disasters that come and some people run towards those disasters and some people run away from them.

  20. If we had known in 2019 what was going to happen in 2020, maybe we would have done certain things differently.

  21. Maybe we would have prepared in a certain way.

  22. Of course, that's true of many aspects in life.

  23. There's a preparation for what's to come.

  24. There's a mitigation of preparing for what might happen in terms of disaster.

  25. And that's what the author of Proverbs is going to tell us about this week.

  26. We're going to look at how do we prepare for what's to come in this life.

  27. How can we be ready when disaster comes?

  28. We're going to hear about a storm.

  29. So our question is, how do we survive?

  30. How do we prepare for the storm that's to come?

  31. It's with that that we're going to turn to Proverbs 1, verse 20.

    Proverbs 1:20

  32. I invite you to turn there with me in your Bibles or in your worship guide or your phone.

  33. And as we come to Proverbs 1, remember that this is God's word.

  34. In Proverbs 30, verse 5 tells us that every word of God proves true.

    Proverbs 30:5

  35. He is a shield to those who take refuge in him.

  36. And so that's why we read now in chapter 1, starting at verse 20.

  37. Wisdom cries aloud in the street.

  38. In the markets, she raises her voice.

  39. At the head of the noisy streets, she cries out.

  40. At the entrance of the city gates, she speaks.

  41. How long, O simple ones, will you love being simple?

  42. How long will scoffers delight in their scoffing and fools hate knowledge?

  43. Verse 23.

  44. If you turn at my reproof, behold, I will pour out my spirit to you.

  45. I will make my words known to you.

  46. Because I have called and you refused to listen,

  47. have stretched out my hand and no one has heeded,

  48. because you have ignored all my counsel and would have none of my reproof,

  49. I also will laugh at your calamity.

  50. I will mock when terror strikes you,

  51. when terror strikes you like a storm and your calamity comes like a whirlwind,

  52. when distress and anguish come upon you.

  53. Then they will call upon me, but I will not answer.

  54. They will seek me diligently, but will not find me.

  55. Verse 29.

  56. Because they hated knowledge and did not choose the fear of the Lord

  57. and would have none of my counsel and despised all my reproof,

  58. therefore they shall eat the fruit of their ways

  59. and have their fill of their own devices.

  60. For the simple are killed by their turning away

  61. and the complacency of fools destroys them.

  62. But whoever listens to me will dwell secure

  63. and will be at ease without dread of disaster.

  64. Father, I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  65. Our Father in heaven, we thank you

  66. that you don't leave us alone,

  67. but instead you speak to us by your word.

  68. You, like a good Father, warn us

  69. of things that are going to come in the path of life.

  70. You prepare us for what's to come ahead.

  71. We ask that you would do that this morning,

  72. that you would send your Holy Spirit to encourage us

  73. and stir us up by your word.

  74. And you'd also send him to convict us

  75. that we would have soft and tender hearts,

  76. hearts that are open to you and your wisdom.

  77. We ask that you would do that now

  78. and that you teach us by your word.

  79. We ask these things not because we've earned them

  80. or deserved them,

  81. but because we can ask them in Jesus' name.

  82. Amen.

  83. As I mentioned when I was giving the announcements,

  84. today is June the 14th,

  85. and I'm curious if you remember what happened two years ago

  86. on June the 12th and 13th.

  87. We are right at the two-year anniversary of something.

  88. If you were living in Colorado Springs two years ago,

  89. I can guarantee you, you haven't forgotten about this.

  90. Very beginning of June,

  91. we got hit by one of the worst hailstorms in recent memory.

  92. And you all remember,

  93. that was the first of two hailstorms that summer.

  94. And what I remember about that hailstorm,

  95. first of all,

  96. I didn't really know anything about hail

  97. because I had just moved to Colorado Springs

  98. a year before that,

  99. and hail was just a concept at that point.

  100. But what I remembered about that

  101. was that there was no warning.

  102. No one told us there was going to be a hailstorm that night.

  103. It just happened.

  104. Now, the following hailstorm,

  105. the one that happened, I believe,

  106. in August of that summer,

  107. we had some warning.

  108. And so there was more of a chance to take cover.

  109. Both hailstorms were destructive.

  110. Some people had to have their roofs replaced twice.

  111. It's great for those who had it,

  112. who delayed and only had it replaced the second time.

  113. Well, that highlights something for us

  114. that there are two kinds of storms in this world.

  115. Sometimes there's storms that we know about.

  116. We can see them coming.

  117. And then sometimes there's storms

  118. that just happen without any warning.

  119. I was caught without warning.

  120. My car was outside when the first hailstorm hit.

  121. When the second hailstorm hit,

  122. I had just picked up a rental car

  123. to have my first car worked on.

  124. That's another story.

  125. But there are two kinds of storms, right?

  126. And we face storms in this life.

  127. And in this section of Proverbs,

  128. we're told that calamity can come.

  129. When we don't follow wisdom,

  130. it can happen like a storm.

  131. And the reason that it's compared to a storm

  132. is that it's going to feel in some ways

  133. like something that's unexpected.

  134. It's going to come up in a moment.

  135. That's what we see here in verses 26 and 27.

  136. Wisdom is going to laugh at people

  137. who haven't listened to her

  138. when terror strikes them like a storm.

  139. And calamity comes like a whirlwind.

  140. There's these storms in life, in other words,

  141. that we can live without wisdom.

  142. We can live in foolishness for a certain amount of time

  143. and feel like we're getting away with it.

  144. We can feel like there's not going to be any consequences

  145. and that what we're doing is working

  146. until the moment that the storm finally comes.

  147. There can be a disconnect sometimes

  148. between our present actions

  149. and how it's going to affect us in the future.

  150. And so we're going to look at that storm this morning.

  151. We're going to see a few things.

  152. First, the reality of the storm,

  153. then the characters of the storm,

  154. and then the escape from the storm.

  155. The reality of the storm,

  156. the characters of the storm,

  157. and the escape from the storm.

  158. We've already sort of talked about the reality of the storm.

  159. Wisdom is warning us

  160. that if we ignore her for long enough,

  161. we will face a storm.

  162. In fact, this is true.

  163. We know this intuitively of many areas of life.

  164. For example, if you don't save,

  165. which, by the way, is a major topic

  166. in the book of Proverbs, money.

  167. If you don't save,

  168. say maybe you don't save for retirement,

  169. you don't save in general,

  170. you'll be fine for a while.

  171. You won't feel any consequences for a while.

  172. You might think, this is working great.

  173. There's no reason I need to change my behavior

  174. until one day the storm comes.

  175. One day you need the money.

  176. You don't have the money.

  177. Book of Proverbs talks about alcohol.

  178. You might abuse alcohol for a time.

  179. You might think, this is fine.

  180. It's not affecting me in any big way.

  181. I just have a large supply of ibuprofen in the morning,

  182. and I can keep doing this

  183. until one day the storm comes

  184. and your health finally catches up with you.

  185. It can happen in your work.

  186. The book of Proverbs talks about people

  187. who are lazy, the sluggard.

  188. Maybe you're not doing a great job for a time

  189. and you're on pace with your peers.

  190. You're at the same point in your career,

  191. and then suddenly you wake up one day

  192. and you realize that they've advanced

  193. several levels ahead of you,

  194. and you're still in the same place.

  195. Maybe even worse, you're losing your job.

  196. It can happen in the other way.

  197. Maybe there's overwork,

  198. and you think, I can keep running at this pace.

  199. I'm not facing the consequences yet,

  200. and then one day,

  201. doing too much for too long catches up,

  202. and your heart and your mind

  203. and your body begin to shut down.

  204. This can happen in your relationships as well.

  205. Maybe you do what the Proverbs warns against.

  206. You're foolish with your words and your emotions.

  207. Seems to be working for a time,

  208. and then one day it catches up with you,

  209. and the people that you wanted

  210. and thought were close to you

  211. are all walking away.

  212. There will come a time

  213. when foolishness catches up with us.

  214. There will come a time

  215. when we get what we've wished for.

  216. That's what verse 31 tells us.

  217. Therefore, they shall eat the fruit of their way

  218. and have their fill of their own devices.

  219. There's a time when it's too late

  220. to turn back the clock.

  221. There can come a time

  222. if we ignore wisdom for long enough.

  223. Wisdom will also ignore us.

  224. There's a tragedy that's coming,

  225. and sometimes we can't go back.

  226. There is a real and true storm.

  227. Now, I've talked about this real and true storm

  228. in the sense of physical consequences, right?

  229. Our health and our money and our friendships.

  230. There's also a real storm spiritually.

  231. It's easy to ignore God for a time

  232. and not to face any of the consequences.

  233. You might think,

  234. oh, this is fine.

  235. I'm living my life.

  236. There's these Christians who pay attention to God,

  237. but I am having just as good of a life as they are.

  238. Therefore, I don't understand why it's important

  239. for me to embrace Jesus Christ.

  240. Well, the same thing is true spiritually

  241. that's true of all these examples physically.

  242. We can get away and get along for a time,

  243. and one day the storm is going to come.

  244. Spiritually, when we talk about the storm,

  245. we're talking about the fact that one day

  246. we are going to face God

  247. as the great judge of this world.

  248. It will happen either when we die

  249. or when Jesus Christ returns to the earth

  250. for his church.

  251. And so whether it's in this life

  252. or it's in our relationship with God,

  253. our present actions affect future consequences.

  254. And just because we don't see a storm now

  255. does not mean the storm isn't coming.

  256. And so wisdom cries out to us.

  257. Will we listen in time?

  258. We're told in this passage that

  259. not only does wisdom cry out,

  260. but there's going to come a time

  261. when it will be too late to turn back.

  262. That's what we're told in verse 28.

  263. Then they will call upon me,

  264. but I will not answer.

  265. They will seek me diligently,

  266. but they will not find me.

  267. In other words, wisdom cries out to you

  268. and you don't listen.

  269. One day you will cry out to wisdom

  270. and wisdom won't listen.

  271. There will be a moment

  272. when it's too late to turn back.

  273. And so there's an urgency.

  274. There's an urgency to embracing wisdom,

  275. to embracing the cry,

  276. to change now,

  277. to prepare for the storm

  278. before it's too late

  279. because there will come a moment

  280. when the clock cannot be turned back.

  281. That is the reality of the storm.

  282. If that's the reality of the storm

  283. and wisdom is crying out,

  284. there's of course a variety of ways

  285. to respond,

  286. to answer the call from wisdom.

  287. And that's where we find

  288. the characters of the storm.

  289. We're given three characters here.

  290. In verse 22,

  291. we meet someone called the simple,

  292. we meet the fool,

  293. and the scoffer.

  294. Now the simple person

  295. is someone who doesn't really understand

  296. what we've just talked about.

  297. The simple person doesn't understand

  298. the relationship

  299. between present actions

  300. and future consequences.

  301. The simple person is very naive.

  302. The simple person hasn't committed.

  303. We talked last week about the fact

  304. that there are really only two paths

  305. when it comes to wisdom.

  306. We can embrace the path of wisdom,

  307. and if we don't embrace that path,

  308. we're automatically on the path of foolishness.

  309. There are only two ways to live.

  310. There's only two ways to go.

  311. And so the foolish person

  312. or the simple person

  313. is technically on the foolish path

  314. because they haven't embraced the wise path.

  315. But what's different about the foolish person

  316. from the other two

  317. is that the foolish person,

  318. there's still some hope for them.

  319. They're open.

  320. They're naive.

  321. They're described by some people as gullible,

  322. but there's still some hope for them

  323. to return to the path of wisdom.

  324. And so you'll notice in verse 22,

  325. wisdom actually is only crying out to the simple.

  326. When she mentions scoffers and fools,

  327. she's just commenting on them.

  328. She's not even inviting them.

  329. The fool is someone

  330. who can be invited to do what's right,

  331. has not made that commitment yet,

  332. or the simple is invited to do what's right,

  333. hasn't made the commitment.

  334. So in that sense,

  335. the simple person is a fool,

  336. but there's hope that they might become wise.

  337. Now, when it came to hailstorms,

  338. I was a simple person.

  339. I was not a fool,

  340. at least not yet.

  341. So I was unaware of how hailstorms worked.

  342. I knew them as a theoretical concept.

  343. I didn't realize the danger.

  344. I didn't hear wisdom crying out to me.

  345. My car was on the street

  346. on the night of June 12th, 2018.

  347. The great irony was that

  348. while I typically did not have access

  349. to the garage in the house I was living in,

  350. one of my housemates was out of town

  351. and there was a garage slot open.

  352. However, I didn't take advantage of it.

  353. I was simple.

  354. But I was open to the call to wisdom.

  355. So that night when the hailstorm started,

  356. one of my housemates came

  357. and knocked on my door and woke me up,

  358. told me, your car is on the street

  359. and it's hailing right now.

  360. You need to bring it in.

  361. So this is the call of wisdom

  362. to the simple person, right?

  363. So I ran out, except it was hailing

  364. and it was huge hail.

  365. It was dangerous for people to run out in.

  366. So she gave me her snowboarding helmet

  367. and I had the top of a rubbermaid bin.

  368. It's my shield to guard myself.

  369. And I ran out into the hail.

  370. I got into my car and I started

  371. and I pulled it into the driveway,

  372. into the garage,

  373. and it was already too late.

  374. My car had already been wrecked by hail.

  375. So I was the simple person, right?

  376. And I didn't respond quickly enough.

  377. There's a true urgency.

  378. What we're being taught here,

  379. in part, is that there's not a time

  380. to sit and consider wisdom.

  381. The time to respond to wisdom is now.

  382. The time to respond is now

  383. when it comes to circumstances in our life

  384. and the time to respond now

  385. when it comes to embracing Jesus Christ.

  386. That no one of us knows the day

  387. or the hour that we'll face the Lord.

  388. And there may come a time

  389. where the cry of wisdom is too late.

  390. The cry of wisdom is too late

  391. in our personal lives.

  392. There are some things that happen.

  393. And there are some things

  394. that people in our community do

  395. that we can't just turn the clock back on.

  396. I had comprehensive coverage.

  397. So my car was fixed.

  398. And it cost Geico thousands of dollars.

  399. And it cost me an enormous headache, right?

  400. My housemate could not turn the clock back

  401. on that for me.

  402. The call to the simple

  403. had not happened fast enough.

  404. We also meet the scoffer and the fool.

  405. The fool is worse than the simple

  406. because the fool is not open

  407. in the way the simple is.

  408. The simple can still be pulled

  409. onto the path of wisdom.

  410. The fool is set.

  411. Remember, we've talked about the fact

  412. from Proverbs 12

  413. that the fool is wise in his own eyes.

  414. So the fool is convinced

  415. he knows everything.

  416. So the fool is going to hear the cry.

  417. The fool is going to be confronted

  418. by people and friends and mentors

  419. who describe to him

  420. how foolish his life is,

  421. how the path he's on

  422. is going to lead to destruction.

  423. The fool's not going to listen.

  424. Now, we've met people like this.

  425. I'm sure you have people like this

  426. in your family or your friend group.

  427. Many people come and say,

  428. look, the path that you're on

  429. is not going to end well.

  430. But they're wise in their own eyes, right?

  431. The fool keeps going.

  432. So that's why we see wisdom

  433. is not crying out to the fool.

  434. The scoffer is even worse.

  435. The scoffer's like the fool,

  436. except the scoffer has this

  437. mocking tendency,

  438. makes fun of the wise.

  439. The scoffer's vindictive.

  440. The scoffer's sarcastic and cynical.

  441. The scoffer's the kind of person

  442. that always points out what's wrong

  443. and never sees what's right.

  444. The scoffer takes being wise

  445. in their own eyes to an extreme.

  446. Of course, if you've lived in this world

  447. long enough,

  448. you've met people like this as well.

  449. And the challenge from wisdom

  450. is to the simple.

  451. Turn back before it's too late.

  452. Turn back before it's too late

  453. because there's going to come a time

  454. when things can't be undone.

  455. When this storm comes,

  456. you can't go back in time and redo.

  457. Of course, I would love to go back, right,

  458. and park my car in the garage on June 12th.

  459. That's not an option.

  460. Better to learn the easy way

  461. than the hard way.

  462. Learn in verse 31,

  463. the fool,

  464. if the simple doesn't embrace wisdom,

  465. the simple's going to eat

  466. the fruit of their way

  467. and have their fill of their own devices.

  468. Verse 28,

  469. they're going to call upon wisdom,

  470. but wisdom won't be there to answer.

  471. And so,

  472. the application here for us

  473. is simple.

  474. Listen.

  475. Listen to wisdom

  476. before it's too late.

  477. Listen to wisdom

  478. before it's too late.

  479. We've seen the reality of the storm,

  480. that there are real storms

  481. coming in this life,

  482. physically, materially,

  483. and also spiritually.

  484. We've seen the characters

  485. of the storm,

  486. that there are a variety of ways

  487. to respond

  488. when we're being warned

  489. about the storm.

  490. But there's also

  491. an escape from the storm,

  492. and that's what we see here

  493. in verses 20 through 24.

  494. Wisdom is crying out.

  495. Wisdom isn't doing something

  496. in secret.

  497. Wisdom isn't doing this

  498. in a seminar

  499. that you have to be invited to

  500. and pay money for.

  501. No,

  502. wisdom's crying aloud

  503. in the streets,

  504. verse 20,

  505. in the markets she raises her voice.

  506. Wisdom is not a respecter

  507. of persons.

  508. She's not crying out

  509. only to some classes

  510. and not to others.

  511. She's not crying out

  512. only to rich,

  513. but not to poor.

  514. No,

  515. she's crying out

  516. in public

  517. to everyone.

  518. Anyone and everyone

  519. can have access

  520. to wisdom.

  521. She's loud.

  522. She's urgent.

  523. She's highlighting the fact

  524. that the decision

  525. has to be made,

  526. and all they have to do

  527. is listen.

  528. She's crying out.

  529. She's speaking.

  530. Verse 23,

  531. if you turn at my reproof,

  532. in other words,

  533. if you listen

  534. and do what I've told you to do,

  535. I will make my words

  536. known to you.

  537. I'll speak to you.

  538. Verse 24,

  539. she's called out

  540. and you refuse to what?

  541. Refuse to listen.

  542. I stretch out my hand

  543. and no one has heeded.

  544. In other words,

  545. no one has listened.

  546. Verse 25,

  547. you have ignored

  548. all my counsel.

  549. In other words,

  550. no one listened.

  551. The call of wisdom

  552. is for everyone

  553. and the call of wisdom

  554. is a limited time offer.

  555. And so the time

  556. to act

  557. is now.

  558. The time to listen

  559. is now.

  560. wisdom

  561. doesn't just

  562. cry out

  563. and call.

  564. Wisdom also

  565. makes it easy.

  566. The command here

  567. is not that we

  568. pull ourselves up

  569. by our bootstraps,

  570. not that we go off

  571. on some journey

  572. where we have to

  573. put together

  574. a habit tracker

  575. and make sure

  576. we're setting

  577. a new set,

  578. a new threshold

  579. and bar

  580. that we have to

  581. jump over every day.

  582. wisdom actually

  583. offers to help us

  584. and give us

  585. everything we need.

  586. You know,

  587. there are many

  588. adventures in

  589. Colorado Springs

  590. that if you want

  591. to be successful

  592. and you have no

  593. experience,

  594. you're going to want

  595. to hire a guide.

  596. If you've never

  597. hunted before

  598. and you decide

  599. this is something

  600. I want to get into,

  601. you can hire someone

  602. to help you

  603. and show you the way.

  604. If you want to be

  605. a fly fisher,

  606. you don't know

  607. the right spots

  608. to go to,

  609. you can hire someone

  610. to come with you.

  611. Wisdom here

  612. is telling us

  613. she is there

  614. to be a guide

  615. but we don't

  616. have to hire her.

  617. She's actually free.

  618. We don't have

  619. to hire wisdom.

  620. We don't have

  621. to pay anything.

  622. She offers

  623. her services

  624. to anyone

  625. who's willing

  626. to accept them.

  627. That's what we see

  628. in verse 23.

  629. If you turn

  630. at my reproof,

  631. behold,

  632. I will pour out

  633. my spirit to you.

  634. I will make

  635. my words known

  636. to you.

  637. This is freely

  638. available.

  639. Not only am I

  640. going to be

  641. your guide,

  642. not only am I

  643. going to take you

  644. on the hunting trip,

  645. I'm going to provide

  646. the guns that you need.

  647. I'm bringing

  648. all the food with us.

  649. I'm packing everything.

  650. All you have to do

  651. is get in the car.

  652. That's what wisdom

  653. is offering.

  654. Wisdom is offering

  655. to empower

  656. and enable.

  657. whatever we need,

  658. all we have to do

  659. is listen and accept.

  660. All we have to do

  661. is receive

  662. the correction,

  663. what here is called

  664. reproof.

  665. Verse 23

  666. and 25.

  667. All we have to do

  668. is here

  669. to turn away

  670. from foolishness

  671. and to turn

  672. to wisdom.

  673. If the simple person

  674. teaches us anything,

  675. it's this.

  676. There is no middle ground.

  677. ultimately,

  678. we either choose

  679. to be wise

  680. or we choose

  681. to be foolish.

  682. And so we have to

  683. listen before

  684. it's too late.

  685. We have to heed

  686. wisdom before

  687. it's too late.

  688. If we're people

  689. who have faith

  690. in Jesus Christ,

  691. we heed the call

  692. of wisdom

  693. in all sorts

  694. of areas of life.

  695. We heed the call

  696. of wisdom

  697. in our relationships

  698. before they're destroyed.

  699. We heed

  700. the call of wisdom

  701. when it comes

  702. to the way

  703. we treat food

  704. and drink

  705. before we hurt

  706. ourselves and others.

  707. We heed

  708. the call of wisdom

  709. when it comes

  710. to dealing

  711. with those

  712. who have more power

  713. than us

  714. and those who have

  715. less power.

  716. We heed the call

  717. of wisdom

  718. when it comes

  719. to bringing justice

  720. and loving goodness.

  721. Because God

  722. wants us to walk

  723. well in this world.

  724. He doesn't want

  725. us to face

  726. the disaster

  727. that happens

  728. when we disregard

  729. wisdom.

  730. If you're not

  731. a Christian,

  732. remember that

  733. the beginning

  734. of wisdom,

  735. the beginning

  736. of knowledge

  737. is the fear

  738. of the Lord.

  739. And so before

  740. we embrace

  741. anything else,

  742. we have to embrace

  743. Jesus Christ.

  744. We can't have

  745. wisdom without Him.

  746. And just like

  747. there's a coming storm

  748. in the physical

  749. circumstances

  750. of this life,

  751. there's a coming

  752. destruction

  753. that while things

  754. may seem good now,

  755. there is a time

  756. and a day

  757. when Jesus is going

  758. to return to this earth.

  759. And if we die

  760. before then,

  761. we will also

  762. have to face Him.

  763. And so no matter

  764. how good things

  765. are going now,

  766. we need to be

  767. prepared for that.

  768. And so we do that

  769. as the author

  770. of Proverbs tells us

  771. by receiving

  772. the reproof,

  773. which is a repentance

  774. word,

  775. a turning away

  776. from sin,

  777. repenting of our sins

  778. and turning

  779. to Jesus Christ.

  780. No matter what we do,

  781. we have to remember

  782. the lesson of the simple

  783. and embrace wisdom

  784. now because it is urgent.

  785. embrace wisdom

  786. now because wisdom

  787. provides everything

  788. that we need.

  789. It invites us

  790. to go on a journey

  791. and she supplies

  792. everything that's needed

  793. for the path.

  794. I've been telling you

  795. as we've been going

  796. through the book

  797. of Proverbs

  798. about Matthew 12,

    Matthew 12:42

  799. verse 42,

  800. which tells us

  801. that Jesus is greater

  802. than Solomon.

  803. He's the great

  804. wisdom teacher.

  805. He's even greater.

  806. He teaches us more

  807. than what we learn

  808. in the Proverbs.

  809. But that's not

  810. the only aspect

  811. of wisdom

  812. that we see in Jesus.

  813. We're also told

  814. in Colossians 2,

    Colossians 2:3

  815. verse 3,

  816. that in Jesus

  817. are hidden

  818. all the treasures

  819. of wisdom and knowledge.

  820. We're told

  821. in 1 Corinthians 1,

    1 Corinthians 1:24

  822. verse 24,

  823. that Christ

  824. is the power of God

  825. and the wisdom of God.

  826. In other words,

  827. Jesus doesn't just

  828. teach us wisdom.

  829. He is the full

  830. and final

  831. and greatest embodiment

  832. of God's wisdom.

  833. This woman represents

  834. wisdom,

  835. lady wisdom,

  836. in Proverbs 1.

  837. Jesus is the greatest

  838. fulfillment

  839. and embodiment

  840. of God's wisdom.

  841. That's why we're told

  842. in verse 29,

  843. hating knowledge

  844. means not choosing

  845. the fear of the Lord.

  846. Jesus is the one

  847. who comes

  848. and actually allows us

  849. to have true fear

  850. of the Lord,

  851. not fear of punishment,

  852. but fear of displeasing

  853. the God who offers

  854. us salvation.

  855. And we know

  856. even more

  857. than people

  858. in the Old Testament

  859. about this spirit

  860. that's going to be

  861. poured out in verse 23.

  862. How is it

  863. that we're going

  864. to be given

  865. everything we need

  866. for the journey

  867. of wisdom?

  868. Well, it's because

  869. God is pouring out

  870. his spirit on us

  871. because of Jesus Christ.

  872. He offers us

  873. not worldly wisdom,

  874. not wisdom

  875. we have to create

  876. and build,

  877. but wisdom

  878. that he gives us

  879. through his word

  880. and by his spirit.

  881. And so God

  882. provides everything

  883. needed for wisdom

  884. for those who will

  885. simply hear

  886. and listen

  887. in turn.

  888. God doesn't just

  889. change our hearts.

  890. He gives us

  891. a new and true

  892. desire for wisdom.

  893. And he helps us

  894. to grow in it.

  895. He helps us

  896. through his word.

  897. He helps us

  898. through his spirit

  899. and he helps us

  900. through the community

  901. that he's given us

  902. in one another

  903. in the church

  904. that we would have

  905. what we need

  906. to listen

  907. to wisdom.

  908. wisdom.

  909. So how is it

  910. that we are prepared?

  911. How is it

  912. that we look forward

  913. knowing that we're ready

  914. for the storms

  915. that are to come?

  916. We have to know

  917. that the storm

  918. is real.

  919. We have to choose

  920. not the way

  921. of the simple

  922. but the way

  923. of the wise,

  924. the person who

  925. embraces wisdom

  926. and listens.

  927. That's how we're ready

  928. for what is to come

  929. spiritually

  930. and physically

  931. in this world.

  932. In his book

  933. Deep Survival

  934. Who Lives

  935. Who Dies

  936. and Why

  937. a man named

  938. Lawrence Gonzalez

  939. tells the time

  940. that he spent

  941. at the Vermont

  942. Wilderness

  943. Survival School

  944. with a man

  945. named Mark Morey.

  946. And during that time

  947. in the survival school

  948. they would spend time

  949. walking through

  950. the forest together

  951. and one thing

  952. that Mark taught him

  953. is that he had to

  954. listen to the birds

  955. because the birds

  956. were what he called

  957. the radars

  958. of the forest.

  959. That when the birds

  960. were making noise

  961. it was time to listen

  962. because there was

  963. something going on.

  964. That reminded Lawrence

  965. of another time

  966. when he was hiking

  967. on the U.S.-Mexico border

  968. and it was incredibly

  969. hot outside

  970. it was over 100 degrees

  971. and so he wasn't

  972. thinking very clearly

  973. but he was with

  974. a hiking partner

  975. and this woman

  976. he was hiking with

  977. at one point

  978. put out her hand

  979. and stopped him

  980. on the trail.

  981. He looked up

  982. and what was there

  983. making noise

  984. but a bird

  985. there was a

  986. a blue jay

  987. who was screeching.

  988. He looked up

  989. at the blue jay

  990. that was screeching

  991. and then his guide

  992. pointed him to the ground

  993. and he saw

  994. right in front of them

  995. across the path

  996. a huge rattlesnake

  997. that had just devoured

  998. the little baby

  999. of the blue jay.

  1000. the blue jay

  1001. was crying out

  1002. warning him

  1003. of the danger

  1004. that was to come

1005. and all he had to do

  1006. was listen.

  1007. Wisdom

  1008. is crying out.

1009. All we have to do

  1010. is listen

  1011. and live.

  1012. I invite you

  1013. to pray with me.

  1014. Our Father in heaven

  1015. we praise you

  1016. and we thank you

1017. that you don't let us

  1018. stumble

  1019. and wander along

  1020. but instead

  1021. you cry out

  1022. with your wisdom.

  1023. You invite us

  1024. to walk with you

  1025. on a journey

  1026. that you provide

  1027. everything

  1028. we need.

1029. We ask that you do this now

  1030. that you

  1031. if we're simple

1032. that you stir up our hearts

  1033. to commit to you

  1034. and be wise.

  1035. If we're scoffers

  1036. you'd soften our hearts

  1037. and convict them

  1038. of sin

1039. and that if you're foolish

  1040. we're foolish

1041. you'd help us to know

1042. that we shouldn't be wise

  1043. in our own eyes

1044. but we need to learn

  1045. from you.

1046. Ask that you'd encourage us

  1047. that you give us

  1048. your spirit

  1049. that we don't walk

1050. the way of wisdom alone

  1051. but it's a place

1052. that we walk with you

  1053. as our guide

  1054. and our comforter.

  1055. We praise you

  1056. that we can learn

  1057. these things

  1058. from your word

  1059. together

1060. that we can worship you

  1061. with one voice.

1062. So we ask these things

1063. not because we've earned them

  1064. or deserve them

  1065. but we ask them

  1066. in Jesus' name.

  1067. Amen.
