  1. Good morning.

  2. My name is Matthew Capone, and I'm the pastor here at Shine Mountain Presbyterian Church,

  3. and it's my joy to bring God's word to you today.

  4. A special welcome if you're new or visiting with us.

  5. We're glad that you're here, and we're glad that you're here not because we're filling seats,

  6. but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  7. And as we follow Jesus together, we become convinced that there's no one so good,

  8. they don't need God's grace, and no one so bad they can't have it,

  9. which is why we come back week after week to look at what God has to say to us in his word

  10. because we believe that God has something to say to everyone.

  11. He has something to say to people who've been Christians their entire lives.

  12. He's been something to say to people who've been Christians for a very short amount of time,

  13. and he has something to say, a challenge, to people who are not Christians.

  14. God's word gives us life.

  15. God's word gives us life.

  16. We've been talking about a lot of different concepts about wisdom from chapter one.

  17. At this point, hopefully you're convinced that wisdom is something you want.

  18. Hopefully you're convinced that wisdom is something you need if you're going to walk well in this life.

  19. And so that raises our next question here with chapter two, which is how we continue in wisdom.

  20. One man puts it this way, that chapter two asks the question, how do we grow?

  21. If we know that we need wisdom and now we want wisdom, how is it that we become wise people?

  22. What we saw last week was negative, right?

  23. It was a warning to those who won't listen.

  24. This week in chapter two, it's going to be positive.

  25. It's going to tell us what it actually looks like to be people who become wise.

  26. And so it's with that that we're going to turn to Proverbs chapter two and reading the entire chapter.

  27. I invite you to turn in your worship guide.

  28. It's near the end of there.

  29. You can turn in your Bible or your phone.

  30. No matter where you turn, the importance is that we are here together in this chapter of God's word.

  31. Now, I have not done this in probably a year or so,

  32. but I'm going to ask you this morning to take a look and see if you can spot some words that are repeated frequently in this passage.

  33. It's tempting sometimes when we read God's word to just kind of turn our minds off while we're reading it,

  34. get to the end, and then we wait, you know, until the preacher says the first illustration.

  35. And I get that.

  36. It's a temptation for me as well.

  37. But there's a word here that's going to be repeated six times,

  38. and I'm going to challenge you to see if you can find it.

  39. Also, it's not an article, right?

  40. Don't tell me the word is the or a or an.

  41. With that, we are in Proverbs chapter 2.

    Proverbs 2 chapter mention

  42. This is God's word.

  43. Remember that God tells us in Proverbs chapter 30, verse 5,

    Proverbs 30:5

  44. that every word of God proves true.

  45. He is a shield to those who take refuge in him.

  46. And so that's why we read now, starting at chapter 2.

  47. My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you,

  48. making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding.

  49. Yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding.

  50. If you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures,

  51. then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God.

  52. Verse 6.

  53. For the Lord gives wisdom.

  54. From his mouth come knowledge and understanding.

  55. He stores up sound wisdom for the upright.

  56. He is a shield to those who walk in integrity,

  57. guarding the paths of justice and watching over the way of his saints.

  58. Verse 9.

  59. Then you will understand righteousness and justice and equity, every good path.

  60. For wisdom will come into your heart and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul.

  61. Discretion will watch over you.

  62. Understanding will guard you, delivering you from the way of evil,

  63. from men of perverted speech,

  64. who forsake the paths of uprightness to walk in the ways of darkness,

  65. who rejoice in doing evil and delight in the perverseness of evil,

  66. men whose paths are crooked and who are devious in their ways.

  67. Verse 16.

  68. So you will be delivered from the forbidden woman,

  69. from the adulteress with her smooth words,

  70. who forsakes the companion of her youth and forgets the covenant of her God.

  71. For her house sinks down to death and her paths to the departed.

  72. None who go to her come back,

  73. nor do they regain the paths of life.

  74. Verse 20.

  75. So you will walk in the way of the good and keep to the paths of the righteous.

  76. For the upright will inhabit the land,

  77. and those with integrity will remain in it.

  78. But the wicked will be cut off from the land,

  79. and the treacherous will be rooted out of it.

  80. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  81. Amen.

  82. Our Father in heaven, we praise you and thank you again

  83. that you have not left us alone as orphans in a merciless universe.

  84. You've not abandoned us to our own devices to figure out how this world works,

  85. but instead you have come and you've given us your word.

  86. You've spoken clearly to us so that we would not be lost or confused,

  87. but we would know the way to walk in this world.

  88. We ask that you would do that now this morning by your spirit,

  89. that you would help us,

  90. that you would speak clearly to us,

  91. and that we would hear and believe and know everything that you've written in your word.

  92. We ask all these things in Jesus' name.

  93. Amen.

  94. Amen.

  95. If you are a Star Wars fan of any sort,

  96. you know that at the end of last year,

  97. The Mandalorian came out,

  98. which tells us the story after episode six.

  99. It's about five years after the return of the Jedi,

  100. so Darth Vader has turned good again.

  101. It tells the story of a man named Din,

  102. and Din's a bounty hunter,

  103. and as a bounty hunter, he belongs to this group called the Mandalorians.

  104. They're a tribe or a clan,

  105. and this tribe or clan is from the planet of Mandalore.

  106. And there's this phrase that they repeat over and over

  107. that characterizes how they work as a tribe or a clan.

  108. You all know what this is?

  109. This is the way.

  110. Yeah, over and over they say,

  111. this is the way,

  112. except it sounds more like this.

  113. This is the way.

  114. And it's something that they repeat to describe

  115. what their pattern of life is,

  116. the way that they live in the world.

  117. And one of the things that's important for them as they live

  118. is that they never take off their helmet

  119. in front of a living human being.

  120. And so they have this code that they live by,

  121. this way that they walk.

  122. They're loyal to it,

  123. and they have allegiance to it.

  124. And it's something that they love,

  125. and this love also brings them great protection.

  126. You know, for example,

  127. that when Din gets into trouble,

  128. he's rescued baby Yoda,

  129. and there are other bounty hunters

  130. that are coming after him.

  131. Who comes to protect him?

  132. Well, it's the other Mandalorians.

  133. Because he loves the way,

  134. the way also protects him.

  135. And that's what we're going to see here

  136. in this chapter about Proverbs.

  137. We're going to see the love for the path

  138. and protection by the path.

  139. I told you to look out for repeated words.

  140. There's actually many repeated words,

  141. so I may have played a little bit of a trick on you.

  142. But the word that appears six times is what?

  143. Ooh, different answers.

  144. Okay, wisdom potentially.

  145. What I was looking for was the path.

  146. The path appears six times.

  147. We see it in verses eight and nine.

  148. It's where it first shows up.

  149. The paths of justice.

  150. Verse nine, every good path.

  151. We have it in verse 13.

  152. So there's a good path and an evil path.

  153. There are those who forsake the paths of uprightness.

  154. The way appears, by the way, too.

  155. So the word way, not six times, but it appears a lot.

  156. The way of evil, verse 12.

  157. We have verse 18.

  158. This forbidden woman,

  159. she has paths that go down to the departed.

  160. Verse 19.

  161. No one who goes down regains the paths of life.

  162. So I've hinted at this theme before in the book of Proverbs,

  163. and it's highlighted even more in this chapter.

  164. There are two paths or two ways.

  165. There's not three,

  166. which is what our world often tells us, right?

  167. There's three ways.

  168. There's really wicked people,

  169. really good people,

  170. and really normal, average people.

  171. Proverbs tells us, actually, there's only two.

  172. There's people who fear the Lord and people who don't.

  173. There is a path that we have to walk on in this life.

  174. And so path and way here show up over and over again.

  175. So there's love for the path that we see in this passage

  176. and also protection by the path.

  177. We see at the very beginning of this chapter,

  178. similar to what I told you last week.

  179. Remember, I gave you the illustration of the river guide

  180. or the hunting guide

  181. that illustrates for us what wisdom looks like.

  182. Wisdom is like a guide offering to show us the way,

  183. and all we have to do is listen and accept.

  184. There's no charge or fee.

  185. Wisdom doesn't charge us money.

  186. We don't have to pay anything for wisdom.

  187. Wisdom also gives us everything we need.

  188. This guide is bringing along all the supplies.

  189. It's like a fly fishing guide

  190. who's gonna bring all the things that you need to fly fish.

  191. It's like a hunting guide

  192. who brings all the guns that you need.

  193. That's what we saw last week.

  194. At the end of chapter one,

  195. we saw in verse 23,

  196. I will pour out my spirit to you.

  197. I will make my words known to you.

  198. Wisdom gives you everything that you need.

  199. That's the same thing we see here in chapter two,

  200. the very beginning.

  201. My son, if you receive my words

  202. and treasure up my commandments within you,

  203. yes, listen.

  204. If you call out for insight

  205. and raise your voice for understanding,

  206. listen, the same thing we saw last week.

  207. Verses six and seven,

  208. the Lord gives wisdom from his mouth

  209. come knowledge and understanding.

  210. God's the one providing the wisdom.

  211. He gives all the supplies.

  212. He gives everything needed.

  213. Verse seven,

  214. he stores up sound wisdom for the upright.

  215. He is a shield to those who walk in integrity.

  216. All you have to do is listen.

  217. God provides all the wisdom.

  218. And yet there's something added in this section.

  219. There's a catch.

  220. Verses three and four.

  221. There seems to be something more than just listening.

  222. If you call out for insight

  223. and raise your voice for understanding,

  224. if you seek it like silver

  225. and search for it as for hidden treasures,

  226. then you will understand the fear of the Lord.

  227. And if you're listening carefully,

  228. you might think,

  229. wait,

  230. I thought you told us last week

  231. that all we had to do was listen.

  232. Isn't this adding another obligation?

  233. This sounds difficult and hard.

  234. I thought it wasn't pulling ourselves up

  235. by our bootstraps to get to wisdom.

  236. I thought wisdom was going to give us

  237. everything that we need.

  238. The answer is yes.

  239. And we still have to love it and want it.

  240. Yes.

  241. And we still have to love it and want it.

  242. You can have a river guide

  243. offering to take you fishing for free,

  244. supplying everything that you need.

  245. And if you hate fishing,

  246. it doesn't matter how free it is.

  247. You can have someone who offers to take you hunting,

  248. supplying everything you need,

  249. bringing all the guns and the ammunition,

  250. knowing the best spots.

  251. And if you hate hunting,

  252. it doesn't matter.

  253. Verse three and four,

  254. you have to call out for insight

  255. and raise your voice for understanding.

  256. You have to seek for it like silver

  257. and search for it as for hidden treasures.

  258. In other words,

  259. you have to love wisdom.

  260. It's not enough to just be offered wisdom.

  261. You have to love wisdom.

  262. Wisdom involves our hearts and our love.

  263. That's, of course, the language that's used here.

  264. What is it if it's treasure?

  265. It must be something you really value.

  266. You can't treat wisdom like treasure

  267. unless you believe it is a treasure,

  268. unless you love it.

  269. It's an issue of the heart.

  270. Verse two,

  271. your ear has to be attentive to wisdom

  272. and inclining your heart to understanding.

  273. Verse 10,

  274. it has to be something that's pleasant to you.

  275. Wisdom will come into your heart

  276. and knowledge will be pleasant to your soul.

  277. You will love wisdom.

  278. Wisdom is something that will taste sweet

  279. and beautiful to you.

  280. It's not just that someone's offering

  281. to take you fishing.

  282. It's that you love fishing.

  283. It's your favorite thing.

  284. It's not just that someone's offering

  285. to take you hunting.

  286. It's that you love hunting.

  287. It's your favorite thing.

  288. It's not just that wisdom is crying out

  289. that we saw at the end of chapter one.

  290. It's not just that it offers these things,

  291. but that you love it.

  292. Your heart wants wisdom.

  293. There's a love for wisdom

  294. that has to be true if we want it.

  295. Remember, by the way,

  296. we've seen this idea of love before in chapter one.

  297. If you have your Bible with you,

  298. chapter one, verse 12,

  299. sorry, 22, chapter one, verse 22,

  300. there's the challenge from last week to the simple.

  301. How long, oh simple ones,

  302. will you love being simple?

  303. Not just a matter of listening.

  304. It's a matter of our loves.

  305. It's a matter of what our hearts want and desire.

  306. And so our application is this.

  307. We have to love wisdom

  308. if we want to get wisdom.

  309. We have to say yes

  310. to the offer of wisdom from chapter one

  311. and say yes enthusiastically.

  312. Chapter two is asking us,

  313. what is our treasure?

  314. What is it that we seek after and want

  315. more than anything else?

  316. A righteous person,

  317. a person who fears the Lord,

  318. longs to know God

  319. and follow after his ways.

  320. Wisdom is a relationship,

  321. not a strategy.

  322. Wisdom is a relationship,

  323. not a strategy.

  324. We talked last week about many things

  325. you can get from wisdom.

  326. You can't be interested in wisdom,

  327. though, just for what you can get.

  328. It can't be a strategy.

  329. It has to be something that you actually love.

  330. Wisdom has to be something that moves your heart.

  331. There are some things,

  332. we know this intuitively,

  333. just in the world,

  334. there are some things that can only be had

  335. if we love and treasure them.

  336. Right?

  337. This is how relationships work.

  338. Think, for example,

  339. if you're a young man

  340. and you're interested in a young woman,

  341. it would not be a good idea

  342. for you to go to her

  343. and say something like this.

  344. You know,

  345. I don't hate the idea

  346. of spending time with you.

  347. I haven't thought about you much recently,

  348. but I lost my job,

  349. so I just had a lot of time to think.

  350. And I don't have a lot of hobbies,

  351. so I just have a lot,

  352. you know,

  353. I have space.

  354. So if you would like to spend time with me,

  355. I'd be open to that.

  356. Is she gonna say yes?

  357. No, it's not a winning strategy.

  358. Things that are relational,

  359. that involve relationships,

  360. can only be acquired through love and affection.

  361. This is true,

  362. not just in romantic situations,

  363. but in our families and our friendships.

  364. Wisdom is the same way.

  365. Wisdom is a relationship,

  366. not a strategy.

  367. It's not a coincidence

  368. that this book,

  369. written to a young man,

  370. presents wisdom as a woman.

  371. She is crying out for relationship.

  372. We have to love wisdom

  373. if we want to get wisdom.

  374. The man approaches the woman, right,

  375. because he's interested.

  376. He thinks it's worth the risk.

  377. He thinks there might be some treasure there.

  378. That's the successful strategy.

  379. That's the same way with wisdom.

  380. In the Mandalorian, by the way,

  381. Din,

  382. he's not just with the Mandalorians

  383. because of what he can get.

  384. Remember,

  385. they rescued him as a child.

  386. There's a relationship there.

  387. There's history there.

  388. There's a reason that he refuses

  389. to take off his helmet.

  390. It's not just a strategy.

  391. It's a relationship.

  392. That's the love for the path.

  393. We also see in chapter 2

  394. the protection of the path.

  395. The path is similar to what we saw last week.

  396. It's put positively here

  397. rather than last week

  398. it was put negatively.

  399. The path offers real and present protection

  400. from danger.

  401. We see that in verses 7 and 8.

  402. He stores up sound wisdom for the upright.

  403. He is a shield

  404. to those who walk in integrity.

  405. What does a shield do?

  406. Protects you.

  407. Verse 8,

  408. guarding the paths of justice

  409. and watching over

  410. the way of his saints.

  411. There's a protection.

  412. God is watching over and guarding.

  413. Wisdom is watching over and guarding

  414. people who love it.

  415. Now this works in several ways.

  416. You can think of a compass, right?

  417. The fear of the Lord

  418. shows us the way to go

  419. when things around us are confusing.

  420. It directs us

  421. no matter what our culture is saying.

  422. So it's a compass protecting us.

  423. We could also think of it as

  424. people in this world

  425. being like kites

  426. being blown around by the breeze, right?

  427. If a kite is not tied to anything

  428. it'll blow wherever the wind goes.

  429. Wisdom protects us

  430. by tying us down.

  431. It creates limits.

  432. It makes sure we can only soar

  433. in certain areas.

  434. And so wisdom's a protection

  435. in those ways

  436. but it's actually more than that.

  437. Verse 10,

  438. we're told that we will love wisdom.

  439. Knowledge will be pleasant to our soul.

  440. And it's this knowledge being pleasant

  441. that serves as the true protection

  442. and gives us two situations

  443. as examples here.

  444. First, this love

  445. is going to deliver us

  446. from evil ways.

  447. That's verses 12 through 15.

  448. This again is similar

  449. to what we saw in chapter 1.

  450. Remember in chapter 1

  451. verses 10 through 19

  452. we saw the temptation to violence.

  453. There are going to be violent men

  454. who come to you

  455. and they're going to offer you things.

  456. There's going to be unjust gain.

  457. There's going to be opportunities

  458. to become rich

  459. at other people's expense.

  460. There's a warning there

  461. in chapter 1.

  462. There's something even more than this.

  463. What's going to protect you

  464. from those offers?

  465. It's going to have to be

  466. your love of wisdom ultimately.

  467. Someone comes offering you

  468. an opportunity

  469. to become rich

  470. at other people's expense.

  471. If your love of money

  472. is greater

  473. than your love of wisdom,

  474. what's going to win?

  475. Ultimately,

  476. your love is going to be

  477. what wins.

  478. Worldview,

  479. which people like to talk about a lot,

  480. is knowing the right thing to do.

  481. Love is actually going to

  482. be doing the right thing.

  483. Worldview,

  484. we know God's commandments.

  485. Love is what has us

  486. actually keep those commandments.

  487. In that moment,

  488. when the temptation comes,

  489. the question really is,

  490. what do you love more?

  491. These violent men,

  492. verses 12 through 15,

  493. are going to offer you many things.

  494. They're going to offer you money.

  495. They might offer you power.

  496. They might offer you fame and wealth.

  497. Those things will be very attractive.

  498. It's your love that will protect you.

  499. It's your love of wisdom

  500. that will keep you safe.

  501. It's your love that will allow you

  502. to say no

  503. even when the offer is tempting.

  504. Same thing

  505. is shown for us

  506. in verses 16 through 19.

  507. It's not just men

  508. who will come

  509. to offer you things.

  510. Women here

  511. will come and offer

  512. this young man things.

  513. There's going to be a woman

  514. who is going to tempt him.

  515. She's going to come,

  516. verse 16,

  517. with smooth words.

  518. She's going to appeal

  519. to his love.

  520. She might flatter him,

  521. tell him things

  522. he's been longing to hear

  523. for a long time,

  524. filling needs

  525. that he didn't know

  526. that he had.

  527. It's going to be his love

  528. that protects him.

  529. Now,

  530. the temptation

  531. to evil speech

  532. is one thing.

  533. The temptation

  534. to sexuality

  535. is even more powerful,

  536. the temptation of sex.

  537. We can have

  538. the right worldview,

  539. but if we're not

  540. motivated by love,

  541. wisdom

  542. can't protect us.

  543. Because,

  544. verse 16,

  545. she's going to offer

  546. these smooth words,

  547. right?

  548. She's going to offer

  549. experiences

  550. and things

  551. that we might long for.

  552. And if we don't love

  553. wisdom,

  554. if we don't love God

  555. and love our neighbor

  556. at best,

  557. we're going to try

  558. to get as close

  559. to the line

  560. as we can

  561. without doing

  562. something wrong.

  563. At worst,

  564. we're going to realize

  565. we love something

  566. more than wisdom.

  567. And wisdom

  568. is simply a nuisance.

  569. And so,

  570. in the moment

  571. of temptation,

  572. wisdom will lose

  573. and the forbidden woman

  574. will win.

  575. And so,

  576. instead,

  577. we have to love God

  578. and love others.

  579. If wisdom

  580. is not a delight

  581. to us,

  582. if it doesn't come

  583. into our heart,

  584. verse 10,

  585. if it's not pleasant

  586. to our soul,

  587. then verse 11,

  588. it's not going

  589. to be possible

  590. for understanding

  591. to guard us.

  592. we have to love

  593. the path

  594. to be protected

  595. by the path.

  596. We have to fight

  597. desire with desire.

  598. By the way,

  599. that's what we're going

  600. to see later on

  601. in chapter 5.

  602. That's one of the solutions

  603. that the author of Proverbs

  604. gives to sexual temptation,

  605. to fight one desire

  606. with an even greater

  607. and better desire.

  608. And that is going

  609. to be protection,

  610. right?

  611. Because the Father here

  612. tells us what happens

  613. if we love

  614. the forbidden woman

  615. more than wisdom.

  616. Verse 18,

  617. her house sinks down

  618. to death

  619. and her paths

  620. to the departed.

  621. None who go

  622. to her come back,

  623. nor do they regain

  624. the paths of life.

  625. Wisdom will protect

  626. you from death.

  627. By the way,

  628. this gives us

  629. an important point here.

  630. As we think about

  631. sin and temptation,

  632. especially as we think

  633. about talking about it

  634. with our children,

  635. children,

  636. this by the way,

  637. remember is a book

  638. to children,

  639. the book of Proverbs

  640. that's written

  641. to a young man,

  642. an adolescent male,

  643. it is good and right

  644. to warn about

  645. the consequences of sin.

  646. The author of Proverbs

  647. does that,

  648. did that last week.

  649. But if all we're concerned

  650. about is the consequences

  651. of sin,

  652. ultimately wisdom

  653. cannot protect us.

  654. We cannot warn

  655. just about the dangers

  656. of disobedience,

  657. but we also have to talk

  658. about the fact

  659. that we must love

  660. the Lord our God

  661. with all our heart,

  662. soul,

  663. mind,

  664. and strength.

  665. Remember,

  666. worldview is knowing

  667. what's right.

  668. It's our love

  669. that causes us

  670. to do what's right.

  671. In Deuteronomy chapter 6,

    Deuteronomy 6 chapter mention

  672. which is the portion

  673. of the Bible

  674. that talks about

  675. training our children up

  676. and raising them

  677. to fear and know the Lord

  678. all the time,

  679. it tells us

  680. in verse 5,

  681. you shall love the Lord

  682. your God

  683. with all your heart

  684. and with all your soul

  685. and with all your might.

  686. It is love

  687. for God

  688. and his wisdom

  689. that will guard us.

  690. It's a greater affection

  691. that protects us

  692. from lesser affections.

  693. And so we must love wisdom

  694. to be protected by wisdom.

  695. As I've been telling you

  696. now many weeks,

  697. Matthew chapter 12,

    Matthew 12:42

  698. verse 42,

  699. tells us that Jesus

  700. is the great teacher

  701. of wisdom.

  702. He is greater

  703. than Solomon.

  704. And so Jesus

  705. tells us some similar things.

  706. He tells us

  707. in John chapter 14,

    John 14:15

  708. verse 15,

  709. if you love me,

  710. you will keep

  711. my commandments.

  712. He tells us

  713. in Matthew chapter 22

    Matthew 22 chapter mention

  714. that the law

  715. is summarized

  716. in this way.

  717. Love the Lord

  718. your God

  719. and love your neighbor

  720. as yourself.

  721. That's the heart

  722. of what Jesus teaches.

  723. When Jesus meets

  724. with Nicodemus

  725. in John chapter 3

    John 3 chapter mention

  726. and Nicodemus

  727. wants to know

  728. how can he receive

  729. what it is

  730. that Jesus offers.

  731. He tells Nicodemus

  732. you have to be born again.

  733. And that gets

  734. to one of the answers

  735. that this passage raises

  736. which is this,

  737. if we have to love wisdom

  738. to be protected by wisdom,

  739. how can we love wisdom

  740. more than anything else?

  741. Well as we saw

  742. last week,

  743. Colossians chapter 2,

    Colossians 2:3

  744. verse 3,

  745. it's in Jesus

  746. that we see all wisdom.

  747. And so it's in loving Jesus

  748. that we're able

  749. to have new

  750. and changed hearts.

  751. That's what Jesus

  752. is offering Nicodemus

  753. in John chapter 3.

    John 3 chapter mention

  754. Unless you're born again,

  755. unless the Holy Spirit

  756. is part of your life,

  757. unless Jesus is coming

  758. and making a new creation

  759. out of you,

  760. you have no expectation

  761. that your heart

  762. will be changed

  763. by love

  764. to do

  765. and know

  766. what is right.

  767. Wisdom

  768. is not a strategy,

  769. it's a relationship,

  770. and it's a relationship

  771. ultimately

  772. with Jesus Christ.

  773. He is the one

  774. who gives us

  775. new hearts,

  776. hearts that love

  777. him and wisdom

  778. more than anything else.

  779. And so Proverbs chapter 2

    Proverbs 2 chapter mention

  780. is not a chance

  781. for us

  782. to try to whip up

  783. some kind of frenzy

  784. where we can be

  785. disciplined enough,

  786. where we can have

  787. a habit tracker

  788. so we can keep track

  789. of our wisdom practices.

  790. But ultimately

  791. it's a passage

  792. telling us

  793. that it's a matter

  794. of the heart

  795. and we as people

  796. of the New Testament

  797. know that it's only

  798. Jesus who can

  799. change our hearts.

  800. And so our first step

  801. is to pray to God

  802. that he would send

  803. his spirit,

  804. that he would soften

  805. our hearts,

  806. and that he would

  807. give us new hearts,

  808. that we are the kind

  809. of people who love

  810. wisdom more

  811. than anything else,

  812. that we would love

  813. the Lord our God

  814. with our heart

  815. and our soul

  816. and all our might.

  817. That's ultimately

  818. what Proverbs chapter 2

    Proverbs 2 chapter mention

  819. points us to.

  820. That is how we grow

  821. in wisdom

  822. and become people

  823. of wisdom.

  824. Of course,

  825. the gospel tells us

  826. that as we pursue wisdom,

  827. it's Jesus who pursued

  828. us first.

  829. Romans chapter 5,

    Romans 5:8

  830. verse 8,

  831. tells us,

  832. while we were still

  833. sinners,

  834. Christ died for us.

  835. And so our pursuit

  836. of wisdom

  837. only comes

  838. after Jesus'

  839. pursuit of us.

  840. He is the one

  841. who comes

  842. and changes

  843. hearts of stone

  844. into hearts of flesh.

  845. We come again

  846. then this week

  847. over and over.

  848. The book of Proverbs

  849. is pointing us

  850. to Jesus.

  851. He is the one

  852. who has wisdom

  853. come into our heart

  854. and makes knowledge

  855. pleasant

  856. to our soul.

  857. He is the one,

  858. verse 7,

  859. who's a shield

  860. to those who walk

  861. in integrity.

  862. And he's the one

  863. in verse 8

  864. who watches

  865. over the way

  866. of his saints.

  867. And so he's the one

  868. who gives us

  869. the love of wisdom

  870. and he's the one

  871. who gives us

  872. the protection

  873. of wisdom.

  874. 25 years

  875. after the Mandalorian,

  876. of course,

  877. we're told a different

  878. story in episode 7.

  879. The Galactic Empire

  880. has been defeated

  881. and they've been

  882. replaced by the

  883. First Order.

  884. The rebellion

  885. is still working

  886. but Luke Skywalker

  887. has disappeared.

  888. And Leia wants

  889. to find him, right?

  890. And RTD2

  891. and BB8

  892. have a map

  893. to Luke

  894. and so there's

  895. this journey

  896. to go find him

  897. and at the end,

  898. after all this work

  899. to protect the map

  900. and keep the map

  901. out of their love

  902. for Luke

  903. and their love

  904. for the rebellion,

  905. they finally find him

  906. on an isolated island,

  907. right?

  908. All they have

  909. to do

  910. is find Luke.

  911. All they have

  912. to do

  913. is pursue him

  914. because he provides

  915. everything else.

  916. In episodes 8

  917. and 9,

  918. he trains Rey

  919. in the force.

  920. He teaches her

  921. what she needs

  922. to know

  923. so that she can

  924. go and do battle.

  925. He fights Kylo Ren

  926. to buy time

  927. for the resistance.

  928. He lays himself

  929. down so that

  930. they can escape.

  931. Luke,

  932. out of his love,

  933. battles for them,

  934. right?

  935. He protects them

  936. from death.

  937. He allows them

  938. to live.

  939. And then in episode 9,

  940. The Force Awakens,

  941. he gives Rey

  942. Leia's lightsaber

  943. and he gives

  944. Rey his starfighter.

  945. He gives her

  946. everything that she needs

  947. to return

  948. and do battle.

  949. All she had to do

  950. was seek him out

  951. and find him.

  952. Luke gives her

  953. what she needs.

  954. He prepares her

  955. and trains her.

  956. And he also lays himself

  957. down to protect

  958. the rebellion.

  959. Brothers and sisters,

  960. all we have to do

  961. is go after wisdom.

  962. All we have to do

  963. is love the path,

  964. love Jesus Christ,

  965. and we also

  966. will be protected

  967. by the path.

  968. We will be protected

  969. by Jesus Christ.

  970. Please pray with me.

  971. Our Father in Heaven,

  972. we thank you

  973. for your word.

  974. We ask that you

  975. would use it

  976. in a powerful way

  977. to change our hearts,

  978. that we would grow

  979. in our love

  980. for you.

  981. That you would

  982. make wisdom

  983. a treasure to us

  984. in something

  985. that's sweet.

  986. We confess

  987. that we can't do it

  988. on our own

  989. and that we need

  990. your spirit

  991. to do a new work

  992. in our hearts.

  993. And so we ask

  994. that you would

  995. do that now,

  996. that you would

  997. take our hard hearts

  998. and that you would

  999. soften them,

  1000. that we would be

  1001. eager for your wisdom

  1002. and your ways.

  1003. We ask these things

  1004. not because we have

  1005. earned them

  1006. or deserve them,

  1007. but we ask them

  1008. in Jesus' name.

  1009. Amen.

  1010. Amen.

  1011. Amen.

  1012. Amen.

  1013. Amen.

  1014. Amen.

  1015. Amen.

  1016. Amen.

  1017. Amen.

  1018. Amen.

  1019. Amen.

  1020. Amen.
