  1. I know all of you, so I won't introduce myself, but it's good to be with you again.

  2. As I mentioned earlier, God's law is what shows us the way to walk in this world, that we can

  3. experience blessing, and so that's why we turn at this time in our service. So we do every Sunday

  4. to hear from God because we believe that he has something to say to us, that he speaks with power,

  5. that he hasn't left us to wander, stumble alone in the dark, but instead he's given us his word

  6. to show us the way to go. We're continuing our series in the book of Proverbs, and you'll remember

  7. that the book of Proverbs is a book about wisdom, and wisdom is skill and the art of living, and as

  8. we've seen, it begins with the fear of the Lord, that's the foundation of wisdom, and it continues

  9. with humility and teachability. Last week, we looked at how we grow in wisdom. We saw that it was an

  10. issue of love, that we have to love wisdom to get wisdom. We can't be protected by wisdom unless we

  11. embrace it. This week, we're going to look at the idea of blessing. Wisdom offers to bless us. As we

  12. read chapter three, you're going to see the word blessing show up over and over again, but this also

  13. raises some questions and some confusion. If everything that God gives us is by grace, in what

  14. sense can we say he blesses those who are obedient? If we know that the prosperity gospel is wrong, the

  15. idea that God's main purpose in this life is to bring us material blessing, then what do we do with the

  16. Proverbs promises of blessing? What is the relationship between our obedience and what God

  17. gives to us? That's what we're going to look at in Proverbs chapter three. This is a chapter with many

  18. things in it, so we're not going to look at everything equally. As we look at the whole chapter, I'm going

  19. to give a special focus to verses five and six, which are two of the most famous verses in the Bible,

  20. which tell us to trust in the Lord with all our heart and lean not on our own understanding.

  21. But we'll simply ask this, what are the blessings that we should expect from wisdom?

  22. What are the blessings that we expect from wisdom? It's with that that we turn to read Proverbs

  23. chapter three. I invite you to turn with me in your worship guide or in your Bible or on your phone.

  24. And no matter where you turn, remember that this is God's word. And Proverbs chapter 30, verse five,

    Proverbs 30 chapter mention

  25. tells us that every word of God proves true. He is a shield to those who take refuge in him.

  26. And so that's why we read now together, starting at verse one.

  27. My son, do not forget my teaching, but let your heart keep my commandments.

  28. For length of days and years of life and peace, they will add to you.

  29. Let not steadfast love and faithfulness forsake you. Find them around your neck. Write them on the tablet

  30. of your heart. So you will find favor and good success in the sight of God and man. Verse five,

  31. trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways,

  32. acknowledge him and he will make straight your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes. Fear the Lord

  33. and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones.

  34. My son, do not despise the Lord's discipline or be weary of his reproof. For the Lord reproves him whom

  35. he loves as a father, the son in whom he delights. Verse 13, blessed is the one who finds wisdom

  36. and the one who gets understanding. For the gain from her is better than gain from silver and her

  37. profit better than gold. She is more precious than jewels and nothing you desire can compare with her.

  38. Long life is in her right hand. In her left hand are riches and honor. Her ways are ways of pleasantness

  39. and all her paths are peace. She is a tree of life to those who lay hold of her.

  40. Those who hold her fast are called blessed. Verse 19, the Lord by wisdom founded the earth. By

  41. understanding, he established the heavens. By his knowledge, the deeps broke open and the clouds

  42. dropped down the dew. My son, do not lose sight of these. Keep sound wisdom and discretion and they

  43. will be life for your soul and adornment for your neck. Then you will walk on your way securely and your

  44. foot will not stumble. If you lie down, you will not be afraid. When you lie down, your sleep will be sweet.

  45. Do not be afraid of sudden terror or of the ruin of the wicked when it comes. For the Lord will be

  46. your confidence and will keep your foot from being caught. Do not withhold good from those to whom it is

  47. due when it is in your power to do it. Verse 28, do not say to your neighbor, go and come again.

  48. Tomorrow I will give it when you have it with you. Do not plan evil against your neighbor who dwells

  49. trustingly beside you. Do not contend with a man for no reason when he has done you no harm.

  50. Do not envy a man of violence and do not choose any of his ways. For the devious person is an abomination

  51. to the Lord, but the upright are in his confidence. The Lord's curse is on the house of the wicked,

  52. but he blesses the dwelling of the righteous. Toward the scorners he is scornful, but to the humble

  53. he gives favor. The wise will inherit honor, but fools get disgrace. I invite you to pray with me

  54. as we come to this portion of God's word.

  55. Our Father in heaven, we thank you for the ordinary, normal, week-by-week worship of you,

  56. and you're the words that come from you. We thank you that we have the privilege to hear from you

  57. over and over again. We ask that we wouldn't take it for granted. We wouldn't take for granted the

  58. freedom to worship you together, in person, in public, and we wouldn't take for granted the

  59. privilege of hearing from you in your word. We ask that you would do that now, that you'd send your

  60. Holy Spirit in a powerful way, that we would be challenged and encouraged by the grace that you

  61. offer us in your word. We ask these things not because we deserve them or have earned them,

  62. but we ask them in Jesus' name. Amen.

  63. If you have an iPhone or a smartphone,

  64. you know that there are limits on what you can put on that phone. For example, if you have an iPhone,

  65. if you want to put an app on it, it has to be in the App Store.

  66. And if it's not in the App Store, you're not going to get to put it on. Of course, there's protocols and

  67. requirements for something to be put into the App Store. Not everyone just gets to publish what

  68. they want. It has to be approved. It has to be vetted. And there's reasons for this, but there's

  69. also people who don't like those limits. They think it's artificial. It's their phone. They own it,

  70. right? They should be able to put on it what they want. And so there's this term, jailbreaking,

  71. when you take your phone and you remove all the limits from it. It allows you to put apps on it

  72. that maybe wouldn't be allowed by the App Store. It allows you to access parts of the phone you

  73. wouldn't normally be able to access. It allows you to change and modify things.

  74. And yet, companies warn against it. Your warranty's void often if you do it.

  75. There's a potential your updates won't work anymore. And in fact, Apple has an article out

  76. warning of all the things that could happen to you if you jailbreak your phone. You would be more

  77. vulnerable to hackers coming and taking it. Your battery life will not function as well.

  78. It's possible that you won't be able to install new things on your phone. And if it has problems,

  79. you may not be able to recover it. So you'll find people who are in favor of jailbreaking. You'll

  80. also find people who cry many tears wishing they could go back and undo it. And there's a fundamental

  81. principle there that's also given to us here in Proverbs chapter 3. The builder, the creator,

    Proverbs 3 chapter mention

  82. actually knows what they're doing.

  83. The person who designed something is the one who knows how to keep it safe. There are boundaries

  84. and limits that are good. They're protecting you, right? Apple's not trying to take away your fun.

  85. They're actually trying to enable it. They're trying to make your experience good and pleasant.

  86. They're trying to protect you from those who would take advantage of you. As we talk about blessing in

  87. the Proverbs, that's the first type of blessing that we experience from wisdom. It's the blessing

  88. that comes with honoring the creator. We see this in verses 19 and 20.

  89. The Lord by wisdom founded the earth. By understanding, he established the heavens. By his knowledge,

  90. the deeps broke open and the clouds broke down the dew. In other words, wisdom was how God created

  91. the world. And so, of course, if we follow the ways of wisdom, things are going to go well. We are doing

  92. things the way the creator wanted us to do them. God's law, as I mentioned earlier, is not arbitrary.

  93. When he tells us certain things about how we handle our money, when he tells us how we handle our bodies

  94. and our sexuality, when he tells us how we handle our relationships, he's telling us, this is how I

  95. made the world. Wisdom is not random. It works because wisdom is how I created the universe.

  96. And so, of course, there is going to be a certain kind of blessing that comes from living within the,

  97. living along with the grain of the world rather than against the grain of the world.

  98. And this is the kind of blessing we see throughout chapter 2. If you keep wisdom,

  99. verse 2, you'll have long life, more likely.

  100. Proverbs is going to tell us certain things about what we do with our bodies, right?

  101. If we follow that, the chances of us having long life is greater.

  102. Verses 13 through 18 tell us about all these things that are going to be good.

  103. Again, verse 16, long life, riches, and honor.

  104. Verse 17, peace.

  105. If you follow the instructions of Proverbs, you're more likely to have peace in relationships with others,

  106. less conflict.

  107. And this isn't some special blessing from God, right?

  108. It's the same kind of blessing that comes from not jailbreaking your phone.

  109. You're just living with the instructions that the Creator gave you.

  110. Last week, we talked about the love of wisdom and how it protects us.

  111. And I told you that wisdom was like a compass.

  112. It directs us in the right way.

  113. It's like something that holds a kite down.

  114. This week, it's not that it's a compass and a kite, but that wisdom is the architect.

  115. Wisdom is the designer.

  116. Wisdom built this world, and so there's just a natural blessing

  117. that comes from doing what wisdom tells us.

  118. Just like if we had a problem with this building and we weren't sure what was going on,

  119. it would be wise for us to go and speak to the person who designed it.

  120. They might know more than any of us know, even though we live in the building.

  121. So God is the architect of this world.

  122. Wisdom was there with him at the beginning.

  123. And so there's a natural blessing that comes from walking God's ways.

  124. That's a lot of the blessing that's promised here in chapter 3.

  125. That's where this long life, verse 16, riches and honor come from.

  126. And so we trust God even when the things that he says don't make sense to us.

  127. If God tells us to do something that seems counterintuitive to what our culture is telling us,

  128. what our friends are telling us, maybe what we're telling ourselves,

  129. we do it anyway.

  130. Because we trust that he's the architect.

  131. We trust that God actually knows what he's talking about.

  132. Wisdom was there at the beginning.

  133. We believe that God actually knows best.

  134. And when we do that, God promises blessing.

  135. It's blessing in a natural way.

  136. It's blessing with going along with how God designed the world.

  137. Problem, of course, everyone agrees, right, that Apple makes the iPhone.

  138. I do not know of any Apple deniers who claim that the phone was made by some other organization.

  139. We all agree about that.

  140. What everyone does not agree about is whether God made the world or not.

  141. And so that's where so much of the conflict comes from in our culture.

  142. It's not that we are people who hate the world.

  143. It's not that we're bigots.

  144. It's not that we're backwards.

  145. It's just we believe in a different maker.

  146. We believe that God, rather than anything else, is the architect.

  147. God tells us things then that are true.

  148. We expect if we follow those things, there will be blessing.

  149. The makers of the iPhone are not vindictive.

  150. They're not out to get us.

  151. They don't put limits on the phone so that they can pull on over on us.

  152. No, they're actually trying to make things good and pleasant.

  153. They want us and our phones who have long life and riches and blessing.

  154. And so they put boundaries and limits in place.

  155. When and if we follow those boundaries and limits, we expect good things to happen.

  156. We talked when we went through 1 Peter about there being different types of suffering.

  157. And I told you there's a type of suffering that comes from sin, right?

  158. There's consequences that come.

  159. There's also a type of blessing that comes from righteousness.

  160. There's natural consequences, good consequences, from living in the way God has told us to live.

  161. Of course, we need to be reminded of this.

  162. The son here needs to be reminded to keep these commandments in his heart, verse 1,

  163. because the world, the flesh, and the devil are constantly lying to us.

  164. The enemy of our soul, Satan, has no new strategies.

  165. We're aware of what his strategies are.

  166. And one of his strategies is that he's the father of lies.

  167. And so he constantly is telling us the same thing he told Adam and Eve in the garden.

  168. Did God really say, and does God really have your best interests at heart?

  169. Proverbs 3 is reminding us, yes, God did really say, and he really has your best interests at heart.

  170. Trust God, even when he's telling you the opposite of what everyone else is telling you.

  171. Trust him, because he is the expert.

  172. Trust wisdom, because wisdom, verse 19, founded the earth.

  173. How then do we experience blessing?

  174. What's the relationship between blessing and obedience?

  175. Well, one of the ways is just natural blessing.

  176. We live in line with the way God created the world,

  177. and we expect things to work out because of it.

  178. We also see here, though, a different type of blessing,

  179. not just a natural blessing, something that comes from natural consequences,

  180. but there is a special blessing as well.

  181. We're told in verse 4, we will find favor in the sight of God.

  182. So God shows his favor, a special blessing, on people who honor him and obey him.

  183. We see that also in verse 6.

  184. There's an active element to what God's doing here.

  185. If we acknowledge him in all our ways, he will make straight your paths.

  186. Verses 9 and 10 seem to imply some sort of divine intervention.

  187. You're honoring God with your wealth.

  188. Your barns will be filled with plenty.

  189. That seems a little counterintuitive, right?

  190. You'd think the more you give away, the less you'd have.

  191. So there must be some element here of God being at work,

  192. blessing those who honor him.

  193. And then verse 26, we see it again.

  194. The Lord will be your confidence.

  195. He will keep your foot from being caught.

  196. There is this active intervention by God to provide blessing for those who obey him.

  197. Now, this is where we begin to run into some trouble, right?

  198. Sometimes it can be hard to figure out and understand exactly how these blessings work,

  199. but the Bible gives us examples of them.

  200. And in fact, the best examples are the ones that come from the Bible,

  201. because it's hard for you and me to discern exactly how God makes our paths straight.

  202. But we see him doing it various places in Scripture.

  203. One, for example, is the beginning of the book of Exodus.

  204. If you're familiar with the book of Exodus,

  205. you know it tells the story of God's people leaving slavery.

  206. The very beginning of the book, we meet these Israelite women who are midwives.

  207. And Pharaoh tells them,

  208. your job as Israelite midwives is to make sure you kill any male children who are born in Israel.

  209. What do these midwives do?

  210. They, verse 5, trust in the Lord with all their hearts,

  211. and they lean not on their own understanding.

  212. They don't do what they're told, even though it's dangerous.

  213. They do not kill any of the children that come from the Israelite women,

  214. even though they could be punished for it.

  215. And what happens?

  216. Verse 6, God makes straight their paths.

  217. We're told at the beginning of Exodus that God gives them a special blessing

  218. because of their obedience.

  219. He gives families to these midwives.

  220. That doesn't tell us exactly how that happens.

  221. Maybe he provides spouses providentially that they didn't have.

  222. Maybe he provides pregnancy that they didn't have,

  223. but God blesses them specifically for their obedience.

  224. They honor him.

  225. They trust him.

  226. When it's hard, he makes their path straight.

  227. We've also seen an example of this in the book of Proverbs.

  228. I told you when we started Proverbs,

  229. their very first sermon on it,

  230. the story of Solomon.

  231. God came to Solomon and asked him what he wanted.

  232. And Solomon said,

  233. more than anything else, he wanted wisdom.

  234. We know wisdom starts with the fear of the Lord.

  235. So Solomon is saying,

  236. I want what you have to offer God more than anything else.

  237. I'm trusting you with all my heart.

  238. What does God do?

  239. He makes his path straight.

  240. He says, because you've asked for wisdom,

  241. I won't just give you wisdom.

  242. I'm going to give you everything else you could have asked for.

  243. I'm going to give you riches and wealth and honor.

  244. And so God gives Solomon a special blessing

  245. for his trust and his obedience.

  246. Same is true for us.

  247. Now we don't know exactly how or when.

  248. I'm not going to tell you authoritatively

  249. how God is going to bless you,

  250. how he might provide for you in certain ways.

  251. What I can tell you is this.

  252. The book of Proverbs tells us,

  253. if we trust him,

  254. God will care for us.

  255. If we trust him,

  256. God will care for us.

  257. We have another example from Deuteronomy chapter 8.

    Deuteronomy 8 chapter mention

  258. Israelites are in the wilderness.

  259. God tells them,

  260. when you were in the wilderness,

  261. I kept your clothes from wearing out

  262. and I kept your feet from swelling.

  263. I intervened.

  264. I gave you a special blessing.

  265. I protected you.

  266. Remember verse 26.

  267. The Lord will be your confidence

  268. and will keep your foot from being caught.

  269. Now this is exactly the point

  270. where we start to run into trouble

  271. because of course we know

  272. in our own lives

  273. and in the lives of other Christians,

  274. there's times when we've trusted God

  275. and it's led not to material blessing,

  276. it's actually led to suffering of various sorts.

  277. Bible has those kinds of stories too.

  278. Remember Stephen, the first deacon

  279. in Acts chapter 6 and 7,

    Acts 6 chapter mention

  280. is faithful in proclaiming the gospel

  281. and he gets a faith blessing, right?

  282. He becomes extremely wealthy.

  283. No, he's stoned to death.

  284. He doesn't experience material blessing here and now.

  285. In fact, he loses his life.

  286. We just spent a whole series in 1 Peter

  287. talking about the suffering

  288. that comes from being a Christian.

  289. And so what do we do

  290. with these promises of blessing

  291. when we don't have the experience of the midwives?

  292. What do we do with promises of blessing

  293. when we feel more like Stephen?

  294. Well, there's a couple things we have to remember.

  295. First of all,

  296. there is sometimes or often blessings now,

  297. always blessing in the future.

  298. In other words,

  299. there's an eternal perspective that we have

  300. as we think about God's blessings.

  301. We may suffer now.

  302. We look forward to the time

  303. when Jesus returns

  304. and he makes all things right.

  305. And the author of Proverbs

  306. has that same sort of eternal perspective.

  307. Remember we saw that last week.

  308. The upright will inhabit the land.

  309. The wicked will be cut off from the land.

  310. And so that's part of how

  311. we have to think about these things.

  312. We have to remember in this life,

  313. Jesus knows this by the way,

  314. the Bible's aware of this.

  315. He tells us in John chapter 6, verse 33,

    John 6:33

  316. in this life you'll have tribulation,

  317. but I've overcome the world.

  318. So there's an ultimate blessing

  319. that we look forward to

  320. when Jesus returns.

  321. The other thing we have to remember

  322. is the way that Proverbs works.

  323. I hinted at this

  324. when we started the series.

  325. If you have your Bible with you,

  326. you can go back all the way

  327. to Proverbs chapter 1.

    Proverbs 1 chapter mention

  328. Remember, part of wisdom

  329. is knowing how to interpret wisdom.

  330. Chapter 1, verse 6,

  331. there's wisdom to understanding

  332. a proverb and a saying.

  333. Verse 2,

  334. to understand the words of insight.

  335. So we have to understand

  336. how the words of insight

  337. of chapter 3 work.

  338. And they work like this.

  339. Proverbs, as many people have put it,

  340. are not rules but principles.

  341. They're not rules but principles.

  342. That's the way the genre

  343. of a proverb works.

  344. They have to be applied

  345. in the right time,

  346. in the right place.

  347. They are not guarantees.

  348. Proverbs is not a legal document

  349. where God guarantees

  350. rigid blessings

  351. for obedience

  352. in a certain way

  353. in a certain time

  354. in a certain place.

  355. Instead, Proverbs tells us

  356. the way the world

  357. generally works,

  358. the way it is supposed to work.

  359. It doesn't mean

  360. there aren't exceptions.

  361. That's part of the reason

  362. God's given us

  363. the book of Job

  364. and the book of Ecclesiastes.

  365. So Job is a righteous man.

  366. He trusts in the Lord

  367. with all his heart.

  368. And all his wealth

  369. and family

  370. are taken away from him

  371. with the exception

  372. of his wife.

  373. And Job's friends,

  374. as many people have pointed out,

  375. come to him

  376. and quote Proverbs 3

  377. logic to him.

  378. You're suffering.

  379. Obviously,

  380. you haven't trusted the Lord.

  381. So there's a wisdom

  382. to reading Proverbs 3.

  383. Just because

  384. righteous needs

  385. leads to blessing

  386. does not mean

  387. that everyone

  388. who suffers

  389. has sinned.

  390. It means that

  391. this world is broken.

  392. While it's meant

  393. to work this way,

  394. it doesn't always

  395. work this way

  396. in the here and now.

  397. It's also helpful

  398. to remember

  399. in the Old Testament,

  400. there's a greater focus

  401. on physical,

  402. material blessing

  403. and less of a focus

  404. on spiritual blessing.

  405. In the New Testament,

  406. there's a greater emphasis

  407. on spiritual blessing,

  408. less of an emphasis

  409. on material blessing.

  410. But both

  411. are in both.

  412. So there's both

  413. spiritual and material

  414. blessing in the Old Testament,

  415. both spiritual and material

  416. blessing in the New Testament.

  417. When we trust

  418. in the Lord

  419. with all our heart,

  420. and it seems like

  421. he's not making

  422. our path straight,

  423. we continue to trust

  424. in his goodness

  425. knowing that he will

  426. fully and finally

  427. one day.

  428. When we trust

  429. in the Lord

  430. with all our heart,

  431. but it looks like

  432. he's not making

  433. our path straight,

  434. we trust him

  435. knowing that he will

  436. fully and finally

  437. make them straight

  438. one day.

  439. We sometimes

  440. and often

  441. see blessing now,

  442. we will always

  443. and ultimately

  444. see it in the future.

  445. And in fact,

  446. that's how much

  447. of the Bible

  448. works and talks.

  449. So there's blessing.

  450. There's blessing

  451. that comes from wisdom.

  452. There's natural blessing

  453. that comes just as a consequence

  454. of living in the world

  455. the way God intended.

  456. And there's a special blessing

  457. that God gives to his people,

  458. showing them

  459. what it tells us in verse 4,

  460. his favor.

  461. I focus so far mainly here

  462. on verse 6,

  463. God making straight

  464. our paths,

  465. the blessing that comes,

  466. but this blessing comes

  467. specifically from trusting God.

  468. There's a dance here.

  469. There's a trust

  470. blessing dance.

  471. And we're given

  472. sort of general commands

  473. here to trust God,

  474. right?

  475. Verse 5,

  476. trust in the Lord

  477. with all your heart.

  478. Do not lean on

  479. your own understanding.

  480. Verse 6,

  481. in all your ways

  482. acknowledge him.

  483. Whatever you do,

  484. live according to

  485. what God has told you,

  486. his instructions.

  487. He's the architect.

  488. He's written the manual.

  489. Pay heed to it.

  490. Now,

  491. it would be wonderful

  492. if chapter 3 of Proverbs

  493. ended there.

  494. It would be a great,

  495. pithy saying.

  496. We could have someone

  497. write it in calligraphy

  498. and put it on a wall

  499. in our house

  500. and there'd be no specifics.

  501. We'd just get to say,

  502. we trust in the Lord

  503. in this house.

  504. Problem is,

  505. verse 3 actually tells us

  506. what trust,

  507. or chapter 3 actually tells us

  508. what trust in the Lord

  509. looks like.

  510. Gives us a specific list

  511. of what trusting people do.

  512. In other words,

  513. trust is not just

  514. an action of the heart.

  515. It's something that leads

  516. to real behaviors

  517. in time and space.

  518. It's not just a feeling.

  519. Trust is a behavior

  520. and it's behaviors

  521. that are outlined

  522. in this chapter.

  523. We're told,

  524. verse 7,

  525. be not wise

  526. in your own eyes.

  527. Fear the Lord.

  528. So there's an action

  529. of humility

  530. which we've talked about

  531. multiple times now

  532. in Proverbs.

  533. If we trust the Lord,

  534. we're going to be humble

  535. and fear him,

  536. which means we're going

  537. to be looking to his word

  538. for advice and instruction.

  539. We're going to be talking

  540. to other people

  541. and asking for their input.

  542. That's part of our behavior

  543. of trusting God.

  544. It gets even scarier

  545. in verse 9.

  546. If we are people

  547. who trust God,

  548. we will honor him

  549. with our wealth.

  550. Our checkbooks reveal

  551. whether we trust God

  552. or not.

  553. It is one thing

  554. to memorize

  555. and quote

  556. Proverbs 3,

    Proverbs 3:5

  557. verses 5 and 6.

  558. It is another thing

  559. to write a check

  560. when it hurts.

  561. And yet the Bible

  562. tells us

  563. that that is what shows

  564. our trust in God.

  565. As I mentioned last week,

  566. wisdom is not a strategy,

  567. it's a relationship.

  568. So this person

  569. in verse 9

  570. is honoring the Lord

  571. with their wealth,

  572. not so they can get

  573. a return or a blessing,

  574. but because of their

  575. relationship with God,

  576. their trust in him

  577. because they want

  578. to honor him.

  579. By the way,

  580. Deuteronomy chapter 8,

    Deuteronomy 8 chapter mention

  581. again,

  582. I mentioned it earlier,

  583. God tells the people

  584. that when they were

  585. in Egypt,

  586. he protected them.

  587. He kept their clothes

  588. from wearing out.

  589. We trust

  590. that when we give

  591. first to God,

  592. demonstrating our trust

  593. in him,

  594. he's going to care for us.

  595. Maybe it will be

  596. in a Deuteronomy chapter 8,

    Deuteronomy 8 chapter mention

  597. 8 sort of way,

  598. maybe he'll keep

  599. our clothes

  600. from wearing out,

  601. maybe it will be

  602. in a different way,

  603. we don't need to know.

  604. What we need to know

  605. is that we belong

  606. to God

  607. and he cares for us.

  608. The list continues,

  609. verses 11 and 12,

  610. trust in God

  611. means we remain

  612. faithful to him

  613. when things are difficult.

  614. If we're not seeing

  615. our paths made straight,

  616. if our barns

  617. are not filled

  618. with plenty,

  619. even though we've

  620. given God

  621. the first fruits,

  622. it's not coincidental,

  623. by the way,

  624. that verses 11 and 12

  625. follow verses 9 and 10,

  626. we continue to trust God.

  627. We don't despise

  628. his discipline.

  629. So we remain faithful,

  630. seeking God,

  631. even when things

  632. aren't turning out

  633. the way we want them to.

  634. That's how we demonstrate

  635. our trust.

  636. Then we're told

  637. in verses 27 and 28,

  638. trust looks like

  639. loving our neighbor,

  640. which sounds a lot

  641. like verses 9 and 10.

  642. Loving our neighbor

  643. is going to cost us

  644. something, right?

  645. We trust God

  646. that when we give up

  647. for others' good,

  648. he's going to continue

  649. to protect

  650. and provide for us.

  651. And we demonstrate

  652. that trust

  653. by actually providing

  654. for others

  655. rather than hoarding

  656. as much as we can,

  657. trusting our storehouse

  658. rather than God's provision.

  659. These are the actions

  660. that show

  661. whether we trust God.

  662. Verses 28 through 32

  663. present us

  664. with some shortcuts,

  665. some alternate ways

  666. we might try

  667. to get blessing.

  668. We might try

  669. to get blessing

  670. not by trusting

  671. the Lord,

  672. verse 28,

  673. but withholding good

  674. from our neighbor.

  675. We might try

  676. to get blessing

  677. by planning evil,

  678. verse 29.

  679. We might envy

  680. someone

  681. who has more blessing

  682. than us,

  683. verse 31,

  684. but has gotten it

  685. for the wrong reasons.

  686. We might envy

  687. a violent man.

  688. Why would we envy

  689. a violent man?

  690. Well,

  691. he probably has barns

  692. that are full, right?

  693. He's plundered

  694. other people.

  695. He's doing well

  696. in life.

  697. He has success.

  698. He has the blessing

  699. maybe we want to have.

  700. And so we remember

  701. that God's blessings

  702. are sometimes,

  703. often now,

  704. always in the future.

  705. That's the warning,

  706. too,

  707. for this violent man.

  708. Verse 33,

  709. the Lord's curse

  710. is on the house

  711. of the wicked.

  712. It doesn't matter

  713. how much

  714. that violent man

  715. has now.

  716. He will not have it

  717. in the future.

  718. But,

  719. verse 33 again,

  720. he blesses the dwelling

  721. of the righteous.

  722. Of course,

  723. this shouldn't surprise us

  724. because Jesus tells us

  725. in Matthew chapter 22

    Matthew 22 chapter mention

  726. that the sum of the law

  727. is that we love God

  728. and we love our neighbor.

  729. And that's what we see here

  730. in Proverbs chapter 3.

    Proverbs 3 chapter mention

  731. Trust in God

  732. is demonstrated

  733. through love of God,

  734. treasuring His commandments,

  735. giving our first fruits to Him,

  736. and love of neighbor,

  737. doing what we can

  738. to serve our neighbor,

  739. knowing that God

  740. will provide for us.

  741. And so our trust

  742. has real actions,

  743. real behaviors,

  744. that can help us know

  745. whether we actually believe

  746. God is going to protect

  747. and provide for us.

  748. Our Lord Jesus

  749. teaches us the same thing.

  750. I'm a broken record

  751. at this point,

  752. but Jesus is the great

  753. teacher of wisdom.

  754. He's greater than Solomon.

  755. We saw last week

  756. that He tells us

  757. in John chapter 14,

    John 14 chapter mention

  758. if you love me,

  759. you'll keep my commandments.

  760. Jesus also motivates

  761. obedience and faith

  762. and trust

  763. through promises of blessing.

  764. Jesus calls us

  765. to trust Him

  766. with all our hearts

  767. and in all our ways.

  768. He does this

  769. in Mark chapter 8.

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  770. He says,

  771. if anyone would come

  772. after me,

  773. let him deny himself

  774. and take up his cross

  775. and follow me.

  776. For whoever would save

  777. his life will lose it,

  778. but whoever loses his life

  779. for my sake

  780. and the gospels

  781. will save it.

  782. For what does it profit

  783. a man to gain

  784. the whole world

  785. and forfeit his soul?

  786. God calls us

  787. to take up our cross

  788. and follow Him.

  789. He calls us

  790. to obedience and trust.

  791. God also promises

  792. blessing.

  793. He tells us

  794. in Matthew chapter 6,

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  795. seek first

  796. the kingdom of God

  797. and His righteousness

  798. and all these things

  799. will be added to you.

  800. Trust in the Lord

  801. with all your heart.

  802. Lean not

  803. on your own understanding.

  804. He will make

  805. your paths straight.

  806. Jesus tells us

  807. about giving and blessing.

  808. He tells us

  809. in Matthew chapter 6 again

    Matthew 6 chapter mention

  810. that when we give

  811. to the needy,

  812. don't let your left hand

  813. see what your right hand

  814. is doing.

  815. Do it in secret.

  816. And your heavenly Father

  817. who sees in secret

  818. will what?

  819. He'll reward you.

  820. Jesus promises

  821. rewards for obedience.

  822. He tells Peter

  823. in Luke chapter 18

    Luke 18 chapter mention

  824. when Peter says,

  825. see, we've left our homes

  826. and followed you.

  827. Jesus says,

  828. truly I say to you,

  829. there is no one

  830. who has left house

  831. or wife

  832. or brothers

  833. or parents

  834. or children

  835. for the sake

  836. of the kingdom of God

  837. who will not receive

  838. many times more

  839. in this time

  840. eternal life.

  841. Jesus calls us

  842. to obedience.

  843. Jesus also promises

  844. blessing.

  845. Jesus knows,

  846. like the book of Job

  847. and Ecclesiastes,

  848. that things don't always

  849. work out in this life.

  850. Jesus is the one

  851. who said that

  852. foxes have holes

  853. and birds of the air

  854. have nests

  855. but the Son of Man

  856. has nowhere to lay his head.

  857. Jesus is the one

  858. who tells his disciples,

  859. blessed are you

  860. when people hate you

  861. and exclude you

  862. and revile you

  863. and spurn your name

  864. as evil

  865. on account of the Son of Man.

  866. Rejoice in that day

  867. and leap for joy

  868. for behold,

  869. your reward is great

  870. in heaven.

  871. Sometimes,

  872. often now,

  873. always in the future

  874. in heaven.

  875. Jesus knows

  876. that it doesn't work out

  877. like a math problem

  878. here in this life.

  879. Blessing doesn't work

  880. like that.

  881. But he also promises

  882. us rewards

  883. for obedience.

  884. And he secures

  885. those blessings

  886. for us

  887. by his death

  888. and his resurrection.

  889. These aren't things

  890. that we earn.

  891. They're things

  892. that Jesus has earned

  893. for us.

  894. This might sound

  895. very similar

  896. to the beginning

  897. of 1 Peter,

  898. which we looked at

  899. in September

  900. of last year.

  901. Remember,

  902. it says this

  903. in chapter 1,

  904. God has caused us

  905. to be born again

  906. to a living hope

  907. through the resurrection

  908. of Jesus Christ

  909. from the dead

  910. to an inheritance

  911. that is a reward,

  912. a blessing,

  913. that is imperishable,

  914. undefiled,

  915. and unfading,

  916. kept in heaven

  917. for you.

  918. In other words,

  919. nothing can touch

  920. the blessing

  921. that God has for us.

  922. That is the ultimate

  923. blessing

  924. that we look forward

  925. to in our obedience.

  926. So what's the relationship

  927. between obedience

  928. and blessing?

  929. God blesses

  930. in natural ways

  931. through those

  932. who follow

  933. the rules

  934. that he's given

  935. in this world,

  936. and God blesses

  937. in a special way

  938. those who trust him

  939. in obedience.

  940. in the movie

  941. Grand Torino

  942. with Clint Eastwood,

  943. he plays the character

  944. of Walt Kowalski

  945. who's a Korean war vet,

  946. and he's been

  947. mostly abandoned

  948. by his family.

  949. His wife has died.

  950. He's a widower,

  951. and they visit him

  952. infrequently,

  953. mainly because they're

  954. interested in his inheritance

  955. and his money.

  956. And he has

  957. this Grand Torino

  958. that his granddaughter

  959. is very excited

  960. about inheriting

  961. when he dies.

  962. So there's this interest

  963. not in him,

  964. not in a relationship

  965. with him,

  966. but in his death.

  967. On the other hand,

  968. there's a young teenager

  969. that lives

  970. in Walt's neighborhood

  971. named Tao.

  972. Now Tao's not set up

  973. to inherit anything.

  974. He's not interested

  975. in Walt's money,

  976. but Walt develops

  977. a relationship with him

  978. and he begins

  979. to mentor him.

  980. He helps Tao

  981. get a job.

  982. He teaches him

  983. the ways of wisdom.

  984. He teaches him

  985. how to talk

  986. to other men

  987. when he wants

  988. to get a job.

  989. He teaches him

  990. how to talk to women.

  991. He coaches Tao

  992. through his dating life.

  993. And Walt ends up

  994. actually defending Tao.

  995. Tao and his family

  996. are being tormented

  997. by a gang

  998. that's in the neighborhood

  999. and Walt stands up

  1000. to them.

  1001. Now I won't spoil

1002. the entire movie for you,

1003. but at the very end,

  1004. Walt dies.

  1005. and his will

  1006. is opened up.

  1007. His family,

  1008. who has ignored him,

  1009. only interested

1010. in what they can get

  1011. from him,

  1012. find out there's nothing

1013. in the will for them.

  1014. Tao,

  1015. who has not been

  1016. interested

  1017. in anything

  1018. that Walt

  1019. has to offer him

  1020. outside of his advice

  1021. and his wisdom

  1022. and his counsel,

  1023. is the one

  1024. at the end

  1025. who receives

  1026. the Gran Torino,

  1027. the Ford car

  1028. that the granddaughter

  1029. desperately wanted

  1030. but doesn't receive.

  1031. And Walt

  1032. has one instruction

  1033. for him.

  1034. You can have

  1035. this car,

  1036. just please don't

  1037. make any modifications

  1038. to it.

  1039. And so,

  1040. it's the one

  1041. who wants

  1042. the relationship.

  1043. It's the one

  1044. who wants

  1045. the wisdom

  1046. looking for nothing else

  1047. who receives

  1048. the blessing.

  1049. Brothers and sisters,

  1050. the same

  1051. is true for us.

  1052. Trust and obedience

  1053. lead to the blessings

  1054. of our Heavenly Father.

  1055. Not because we want

  1056. what he has

  1057. to offer,

  1058. but because we want

  1059. him.

  1060. Let's pray.

  1061. Our Father in Heaven,

  1062. we

  1063. are astounded

1064. when we think of it

  1065. that you would

  1066. actually take

  1067. the time

  1068. and the trouble

  1069. of speaking to us

  1070. and helping us

  1071. even as we were

  1072. people who rebelled

  1073. against you

  1074. and didn't know you.

  1075. We ask

  1076. that you would

  1077. grow

  1078. our obedience

  1079. and our trust

  1080. in you

  1081. and that it would

  1082. be motivated

  1083. by our love

  1084. for you.

  1085. We thank you

  1086. for Jesus'

  1087. promise

  1088. of blessing

  1089. to us

  1090. sometimes in this

  1091. world

  1092. and always in the

  1093. world to come

  1094. and we ask

  1095. that we would

  1096. remain faithful

  1097. to you until the

  1098. end.

  1099. We ask these

  1100. things in Jesus'

  1101. name.

  1102. Amen.
