  1. Good morning. My name is Matthew. I'm here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church, and it's my joy to bring God's word to you today.

  2. Special welcome if you're new or visiting with us. We're glad that you're here, and we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats,

  3. but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  4. And as we follow Jesus together, we become convinced there's no one so good that they don't need God's grace,

  5. and no one so bad that they can't have it, which is why we come back to God's word over and over again,

  6. because we believe that he has something to say to everyone.

  7. We're continuing our series in the book of Proverbs, and we're going to be in Proverbs chapter 5.

    Proverbs 5 chapter mention

  8. You might be wondering what happened to Proverbs chapter 4. Proverbs as a book works topically,

    Proverbs 4 chapter mention

  9. and so many topics are revisited over and over, and so Proverbs chapter 4 repeats the same themes that we covered in chapters 1 through 3.

    Proverbs 4 chapter mention

  10. This is similar to what we did last summer, where we started out with the first few psalms.

  11. We did Psalm 1 through 3, and then we skipped 4, went to 5. I think we may have skipped 6 and gone to 7.

  12. So that explains why we're in chapter 5.

  13. I told you at the beginning of this series about the practice in my family growing up that we would read the chapter of Proverbs

  14. that corresponded to the day of the month.

  15. So we're actually doing that today. Today's the fifth, and we're reading the fifth chapter.

  16. And it's been practiced not just by my family, but by many individual Christians throughout church history.

  17. And because of that practice in my family, I knew the Proverbs very well.

  18. I knew there were various sections in it.

  19. And there was one night where my parents decided, it seemed like it came out of left field,

  20. they decided they needed us to memorize one verse from the Bible that evening.

  21. And I had, and also they told us, and this was their great downfall,

  22. that we could pick whatever verse we wanted.

  23. Now I had other plans, I think, for that evening, and this was an interruption to those plans.

  24. And I did not like the idea of random Bible verses at night,

  25. and so I decided I was going to put an end to this once and for all.

  26. And knowing my Proverbs well, I went off and I memorized Proverbs chapter 5, verse 19.

    Proverbs 5:19

  27. And I went back to my parents and I proudly declared,

  28. A lovely deer, a graceful doe, let her breasts fill you at all times with delight,

  29. be intoxicated always in her love.

  30. And my parents were speechless.

  31. And they never asked us to memorize a random Bible verse again.

  32. Now I mention that story not because I was the youngest child in my family,

  33. and maybe a little bit of a punk,

  34. but because of two things that it shows for us.

  35. First, when we talk about sex, we're talking about a subject that's very sensitive.

  36. And I knew this, part of the reason that was the verse I picked.

  37. When we talk about sex, we're also talking about something that the Bible speaks clearly about,

  38. which is why I knew it was safe to pick that verse.

  39. What were my parents going to say?

  40. It's in the Bible.

  41. You said any verse.

  42. And so the same thing is true of us.

  43. Sex is a very sensitive topic, so we need to be careful in the way that we talk about it.

  44. We also need to be bold and clear in talking about it,

  45. because the Bible is bold and clear in talking about it.

  46. And so as we look to be sensitive and careful,

  47. I'll say a few things as we get started.

  48. First, whenever we talk about a controversial or sensitive topic,

  49. I always tell you, I'm going to say something, not everything.

  50. Something, not everything.

  51. Second, this is another area, as I've mentioned in the past,

  52. where we need to talk about the masculine color of the book of Proverbs.

  53. We're going to see a son being told to stay away from a woman who might tempt him.

  54. And it's possible for us to think that maybe the book of Proverbs is misogynistic in some way, right?

  55. Are we supposed to leave this thinking that men are innocent and women are tempters?

  56. Well, no, that's not the point that we're going to take away.

  57. Remember, I've discussed before the genre of Proverbs in the ancient Near East.

  58. Proverbial literature was written in this form.

  59. It was written in the instruction of a father to his son.

  60. And so it makes sense that this would be the warning.

  61. If it were written by a mother to her daughter, we would expect it to be different, right?

  62. We would expect it to be warning about a man who would be tempting.

  63. And so at risk of stating the obvious, both men and women are tempted sexually.

  64. Both men and women tempt.

  65. And it can be hard sometimes the way that we talk about sexuality in the church,

  66. especially when we talk about women's sexuality,

  67. because sometimes it comes off as if it's a men's issue,

  68. and it makes women feel like it's not safe to struggle.

  69. And so it creates an extra level of shame.

  70. And in fact, that's the last thing we want, right?

  71. Because we know that shame and silence is a tool of Satan.

  72. It's what he uses.

  73. So we just want to say these things out loud and say them clearly, right?

  74. Both men and women struggle with sexual integrity,

  75. whether that's adultery and fornication, and I'll talk about this morning,

  76. whether it's pornography, that's an issue for both sexes.

  77. And so it's not that men struggle and women don't, but that we're humans.

  78. All of us are sexual beings and all of us struggle.

  79. And the other thing that's important to say, of course, is as we're coming to these topics,

  80. it will bring up for some of us painful memories,

  81. maybe painful memories of ways that we've fallen short of God's standard in the past,

  82. maybe painful ways that other people have sinned against us in this way in the past.

  83. And so I just want to remind you as those memories come up that of most and greatest importance,

  84. God is with you.

  85. His grace and his forgiveness are real.

  86. And of much less importance, I am with you.

  87. And so with that, let's turn to Proverbs chapter 5.

    Proverbs 5 chapter mention

  88. I invite you to turn in your Bible or in your worship guide near the end.

  89. You can turn on your phone or turn on your phone.

  90. However you go, remember that this is God's word.

  91. And Proverbs chapter 30, verse 5 tells us that every word of God proves true.

    Proverbs 30:5

  92. He is a shield to those who take refuge in him.

  93. So that's why we read now, starting at verse 1.

  94. My son, be attentive to my wisdom.

  95. Incline your ear to my understanding,

  96. that you may keep discretion and your lips may guard knowledge.

  97. For the lips of a forbidden woman drip honey,

  98. and her speech is smoother than oil.

  99. But in the end, she is bitter as wormwood,

  100. sharp as a two-edged sword.

  101. Her feet go down to death.

  102. Her steps follow the path to shale.

  103. She does not ponder the path of life.

  104. Her ways wander, and she does not know it.

  105. Verse 7.

  106. And now, O sons, listen to me,

  107. and do not depart from the words of my mouth.

  108. Keep your way far from her,

  109. and do not go near the door of her house,

  110. lest you give your honor to others

  111. and your years to the merciless.

  112. Lest strangers take their fill of your strength,

  113. and your labors go to the house of a foreigner.

  114. And at the end of your life,

  115. you groan when your flesh and body are consumed.

  116. And you say,

  117. how I hated discipline,

  118. and my heart despised reproof.

  119. I did not listen to the voice of my teachers

  120. or incline my ear to my instructors.

  121. I am at the brink of utter ruin

  122. in the assembled congregation.

  123. Verse 15.

  124. Drink water from your own cistern,

  125. flowing water from your own well.

  126. Should your springs be scattered abroad,

  127. streams of water in the streets?

  128. Let them be for yourself alone

  129. and not for strangers with you.

  130. Let your fountain be blessed

  131. and rejoice in the wife of your youth,

  132. a lovely deer,

  133. a graceful doe.

  134. Let her breasts fill you at all times with delight.

  135. Be intoxicated always in her love.

  136. Why should you be intoxicated, my son,

  137. with a forbidden woman

  138. and embrace the bosom of an adulteress?

  139. For a man's ways are before the eyes of the Lord,

  140. and he ponders all his paths.

  141. The iniquities of the wicked ensnare him,

  142. and he has held fast in the cords of his sin.

  143. He dies for lack of discipline,

  144. and because of his great folly,

  145. he is led astray.

  146. I invite you to pray with me

  147. as we come to this portion of God's word.

  148. Our Father in heaven,

  149. we thank you

  150. that you don't shy away from hard things,

  151. and we thank you

  152. that you don't leave us alone,

  153. that you don't just create sex

  154. and bodies and men and women,

  155. but you give us guidance

  156. and instructions and rules

  157. to protect us

  158. and to keep us safe.

  159. We ask that you'd help us

  160. this morning

  161. as we talk about

  162. good and hard things,

  163. that you'd send your spirit

  164. to give us the grace that we need,

  165. that we would hear from you

  166. and believe and follow you.

  167. We ask these things in Jesus' name.

  168. Amen.

  169. As I've mentioned,

  170. in the past,

  171. I grew up in the Presbyterian Church.

  172. I grew up in this denomination

  173. that we're in now,

  174. and I've tallied it up recently,

  175. not counting Cheyenne Mountain.

  176. I've been a member of some sort

  177. of five different churches

  178. in the PCA,

  179. in our denomination.

  180. And as I added up,

  181. in three of those churches,

  182. three of those five,

  183. there was at least one leader

  184. who ended up,

  185. you know,

  186. an elder, deacon, staff member,

  187. who ended up,

  188. their marriage ended up ending

  189. because of their adultery.

  190. So three out of five,

  191. leaders,

  192. Presbyterian churches,

  193. two of the other two of the five,

  194. there was a leader

  195. or a staff member

  196. whose marriage ended.

  197. Given the circumstances,

  198. I'm not sure

  199. if it was because of adultery or not.

  200. So three of the five,

  201. clearly adultery,

  202. five of those five churches,

  203. that was what happened.

  204. Not for just someone coming to church,

  205. but for a leader,

  206. someone who's prominent in the church.

  207. Even more than that,

  208. in one of the churches

  209. that I grew up in,

  210. the one I was at

  211. when I was in elementary school,

  212. it's a very small church.

  213. And of the kids that I was with

  214. in Sunday school

  215. in that very small church

  216. and in a homeschool co-op,

  217. now there have been

  218. four pregnancies

  219. that have come out of marriage,

  220. out of wedlock.

  221. And I tell you that story

  222. not to be heavy,

  223. not to be a downer,

  224. but to highlight

  225. what this passage

  226. is highlighting for us,

  227. which is that we are not immune

  228. to sexual temptation.

  229. I mentioned when we talked

  230. about the issue of violence

  231. that it's tempting

  232. to believe that

  233. if we're in the church,

  234. if we're part of good,

  235. conservative,

  236. reformed Presbyterian churches,

  237. that somehow,

  238. you know,

  239. we'll struggle

  240. with these normal sins.

  241. Maybe we'll struggle

  242. with pride or lust.

  243. Maybe we'll be tempted

  244. to gossip,

  245. but of course

  246. we wouldn't struggle

  247. with adultery, right?

  248. We wouldn't be tempted

  249. to actually commit violence

  250. or to trample the poor.

  251. And yet this Israelite father

  252. writing to his Israelite son

  253. realizes that

  254. even as he's raising him

  255. in the covenant community,

  256. this is a very real temptation.

  257. It's one that he needs

  258. to warn him against.

  259. It's something

  260. that he should be on guard for.

  261. He should not assume

  262. that somehow

  263. this doesn't affect him, right?

  264. When we're in the church,

  265. we're not in this bubble

  266. that's somehow unaffected

  267. by the temptations

  268. of this world.

  269. And so we need

  270. this passage from Proverbs

  271. to remind us

  272. of these very real dangers.

  273. It is a mistake

  274. to think that we

  275. will not be tempted

  276. by sexual sin.

  277. It is a mistake

  278. to think that our children

  279. will not be tempted

  280. by sexual sin.

  281. It is the fool

  282. in Proverbs

  283. who doesn't take guard

  284. against these things,

  285. who's not cautious

  286. about these things.

  287. Remember,

  288. the fool has not committed

  289. to the path of wisdom.

  290. And so it's the fool

  291. who doesn't realize

  292. that these temptations

  293. are very real

  294. and very threatening.

  295. We see this allure

  296. that happens

  297. in verses 1-6.

  298. This woman is coming.

  299. She is potentially saying

  300. wonderful things

  301. to this man,

  302. things he's longed

  303. for someone to say to him.

  304. She's seducing him.

  305. Her lips drip honey.

  306. Verse 3,

  307. her speech is smoother

  308. than oil.

  309. There's potentially

  310. a sexual innuendo

  311. going on here

  312. that she's offering

  313. things to this man

  314. that feel

  315. and experiences

  316. that are incredibly

  317. pleasurable.

  318. And so that helps us

  319. understand why

  320. this temptation

  321. is so strong,

  322. why it's alluring to him.

  323. Despite all he has to lose,

  324. he is going to feel

  325. drawn to it.

  326. And of course,

  327. we can say the same thing

  328. for women, right?

  329. There might be a man

  330. who says wonderful things,

  331. whose lips drip with honey,

  332. who tells her the things

  333. she's always wanted to hear.

  334. And there's going to be

  335. a very real temptation

  336. to give in to that.

  337. And so the first thing

  338. we're told here

  339. is simply that

  340. sexual temptation is real.

  341. It's something

  342. that affects us.

  343. The second thing

  344. we're shown here

  345. is that this temptation,

  346. while it presents

  347. as something wonderful,

  348. actually leads to death.

  349. It seems

  350. that it's like honey, right?

  351. Her lips seem like honey.

  352. What do they end up

  353. tasting like?

  354. Verse 4,

  355. actually really bitter.

  356. Bitter is important.

  357. There's a bait and switch

  358. going on.

  359. You're offered something

  360. that seems wonderful.

  361. It ends up

  362. being something terrible.

  363. We again find

  364. our metaphor

  365. of the path here, right?

  366. Her path,

  367. verse 6,

  368. is not the path of life,

  369. but verse 5,

  370. the path to shale.

  371. She leads to death.

  372. Sexual sin

  373. leads to death.

  374. Adultery,

  375. fornication,

  376. lead to death.

  377. death.

  378. We're given

  379. in verses 7-14

  380. a picture

  381. of the type of death

  382. that they lead to,

  383. and there's an emphasis

  384. here on ruin.

  385. There's a financial ruin.

  386. Verse 9,

  387. you're giving your years

  388. to the merciless.

  389. Strangers

  390. are taking your labors

  391. and your strength.

  392. What you do

  393. is going to go

  394. to the house

  395. of a foreigner,

  396. so there's financial

  397. implications to this.

  398. There's physical complications.

  399. Verse 11,

  400. at the end of your life,

  401. you're going to groan

  402. because your flesh

  403. and body are consumed.

  404. There's going to be

  405. a groaning,

  406. an agony

  407. that you experience

  408. in this life

  409. from this sin.

  410. Now,

  411. what's going on

  412. in the book of Proverbs,

  413. most likely in this

  414. cultural setting,

  415. there's a legal recourse

  416. for the spouse

  417. who is harmed by adultery.

  418. So, for example,

  419. let's say there's a wife,

  420. her husband commits adultery,

  421. her husband and his wife

  422. commits adultery.

  423. The person who is harmed,

  424. the innocent spouse,

  425. would be able

  426. to come after them

  427. for financial ramifications.

  428. Now,

  429. that actually used

  430. to be true

  431. in the United States.

  432. It's not true anymore.

  433. We don't have

  434. that specific consequences,

  435. but there are still

  436. consequences

  437. that come from sexual sin.

  438. I'll give you

  439. a few examples.

  440. There was a article

  441. that came out

  442. a few years back

  443. in a wall journal

  444. of all places,

  445. and the article's title

  446. was a question.

  447. The question was this,

  448. does sex

  449. still make babies?

  450. The answer is,

  451. wait for it,

  452. yes.

  453. This was, of course,

  454. examining in the light

  455. of birth control,

  456. saying,

  457. with the reality

  458. of birth control,

  459. do we really think

  460. of sex as something

  461. that's connected

  462. to children?

  463. And it talked about

  464. the failure rate

  465. of birth control.

  466. No matter how well

  467. you are using birth control,

  468. no matter what you have

  469. available to you,

  470. you still have the chance

  471. of having a child.

  472. Ask many married couples

  473. about this, by the way.

  474. And, of course,

  475. that's going to have

  476. financial legal ramifications,

  477. right?

  478. You may end up

  479. giving your honor,

  480. your wealth to others

  481. because you're suddenly

  482. supporting not one family,

  483. but two.

  484. Or maybe you're in a situation

  485. where you're trying

  486. to support a family,

  487. but you don't have

  488. the support you need,

  489. right?

  490. There's a financial element there.

  491. It may lead not to that.

  492. It may lead to a divorce.

  493. It's common knowledge

  494. that divorce is one

  495. of the great destroyers

  496. of wealth.

  497. And, of course,

  498. we're not just talking

  499. about this in pragmatic terms.

  500. This person's groaning

  501. at the end of his life.

  502. There's the risk of disease,

  503. right?

  504. But there's also

  505. the fact that maybe

  506. he's groaning

  507. out of the loneliness

  508. that he has.

  509. He's abandoned

  510. the spouse that he committed to

  511. or she's abandoned

  512. the spouse she committed to.

  513. And suddenly,

  514. at the end of their life,

  515. they don't have

  516. what you would have

  517. from investing in a marriage

  518. over a lifetime.

  519. Maybe this is a single person

  520. who's chosen promiscuity

  521. over marriage.

  522. They, at the end of their life,

  523. they don't have something

  524. to look back on and hold.

  525. So there's this ruin

  526. that the author of Proverbs,

  527. that Solomon,

  528. holds out to us.

  529. There's real

  530. and true destruction.

  531. There's emotional destruction

  532. we could talk about.

  533. And so he's warning them.

  534. I told you before,

  535. our greatest warning

  536. are not the consequences

  537. of sin,

  538. but our loves.

  539. But the consequences

  540. of sin still matter.

  541. And he's telling him,

  542. look, this leads to death

  543. in real and practical ways

  544. in this world.

  545. Don't believe the lie.

  546. Don't believe the lie

  547. that you can indulge in this

  548. for a minute

  549. and it will not affect you.

  550. Now, with the physical

  551. and legal

  552. and relational implications,

  553. of course,

  554. there's one consequence

  555. that's even greater

  556. than all of those.

  557. It comes at the very end here.

  558. Verse 21,

  559. Verse 23,

  560. In other words,

  561. even if none of these

  562. consequences happen to you,

  563. God still sees.

  564. And if you persist

  565. in unrepentant sexual sin,

  566. you have reason

  567. to question

  568. whether you are

  569. actually a Christian.

  570. If you persist

  571. in unrepentant sexual sin,

  572. you should question

  573. whether you're actually

  574. a Christian

  575. if God has given you

  576. a new heart.

  577. I'm not talking about

  578. those who struggle

  579. with sin, right?

  580. All of us struggle

  581. with sin.

  582. All of us have

  583. sexual brokenness.

  584. I'm not talking about

  585. those who are fighting

  586. a good fight

  587. against temptation.

  588. I'm talking about

  589. those who are not

  590. fighting any fight.

  591. They should question

  592. if there's no struggle

  593. against sin in your life,

  594. you should question

  595. whether you belong to God.

  596. And so that's

  597. an even greater consequence

  598. than all of these.

  599. No matter how well

  600. things go in your life,

  601. at the end of time,

  602. you will answer to God

  603. for how you lived

  604. in this world,

  605. including what you did

  606. with your body.

  607. And so the Father here

  608. is warning His Son

  609. of the very serious

  610. temporal consequences

  611. consequences,

  612. and the very serious

  613. eternal consequences.

  614. That sexual sin

  615. will bring Him

  616. death.

  617. Thankfully,

  618. there's not just

  619. a warning here

  620. in Proverbs chapter 5,

    Proverbs 5 chapter mention

  621. but there's also

  622. a word of hope.

  623. There's a solution

  624. that's given,

  625. a particular solution

  626. for this passage.

  627. There's actually

  628. a couple of them.

  629. Verse 8 says,

  630. keep far away from her.

  631. Do not go near the door

  632. of her house.

  633. I'm not going to focus

  634. as much on that

  635. this morning

  636. because we're going

  637. to have a chance

  638. to talk in chapters 6

  639. and 7 about what it

  640. looks like to keep

  641. far away,

  642. about running from temptation.

  643. And so instead,

  644. I'm going to focus

  645. on the other element

  646. that's given to us here

  647. in verses 15 through 20.

  648. Back in a long time ago,

  649. in 2017,

  650. I told you the story

  651. of the actor,

  652. Paul Newman,

  653. who was married

  654. to Joanne Woodward

  655. for 50 years.

  656. And it was rare

  657. for someone to have

  658. that long of a marriage

  659. in that industry,

  660. in the film industry.

  661. And so he was asked

  662. at one point,

  663. how have you remained

  664. faithful for this long

  665. in this kind of setting,

  666. in this culture,

  667. in the way,

  668. places where you run,

  669. how have you done it

  670. to stay married

  671. for 50 years?

  672. And Paul responded

  673. with this quip.

  674. I have steak at home.

  675. Why should I go out

  676. for hamburger?

  677. Now, you might find

  678. that illustration

  679. crass,

  680. but it's similar

  681. to the image

  682. that's used

  683. in this next passage.

  684. We see,

  685. not steak and hamburger,

  686. but water.

  687. Verses 15 and 16,

  688. drink water

  689. from your own cistern,

  690. flowing water

  691. from your own well.

  692. Should your springs

  693. be scattered abroad,

  694. streams of water

  695. in the streets?

  696. In other words,

  697. you have high quality

  698. water at home.

  699. Why would you go out

  700. to the city

  701. and scoop up water

  702. from a puddle

  703. and drink that?

  704. Why would you drink

  705. dirty water like that?

  706. That doesn't make any sense.

  707. You have your own well

  708. at home.

  709. Same thing he's saying

  710. about sexual sin.

  711. This is speaking specifically

  712. to married people.

  713. Why would you go out there?

  714. You have a relationship

  715. at home.

  716. You have your marriage.

  717. Embrace that.

  718. In other words,

  719. the application is this.

  720. Make your sexual relationship

  721. with your spouse

  722. a priority.

  723. Make it something

  724. that you pursue.

  725. Make it something

  726. that you create time for.

  727. Make it something

  728. that you work at.

  729. Now, there's many reasons

  730. for this,

  731. but the reason given here

  732. is specifically

  733. about sexual temptation.

  734. Paul tells us

  735. the same thing

  736. in 1 Corinthians 7

  737. in the New Testament.

  738. work on your sexual relationship

  739. so that you won't be tempted,

  740. so that you can avoid

  741. sexual sin.

  742. Make it a priority,

  743. whatever it looks like,

  744. for that stage of life,

  745. for your stage of life.

  746. Women,

  747. seduce your husband.

  748. men,

  749. men,

  750. pursue your wife.

  751. That is one of the primary ways,

  752. the avenues

  753. that God has given

  754. for people to escape

  755. sexual sin

  756. and sexual temptation.

  757. salvation.

  758. We're then told something else here.

  759. Now, I'm not going to go

  760. into detail,

  761. but there are people

  762. who believe what's going on here

  763. in verses 15

  764. through 18

  765. is a very explicit,

  766. graphic,

  767. sexual innuendo.

  768. But what's here

  769. in verse 19

  770. is a prayer.

  771. And it's a prayer

  772. from the Father

  773. about his son's marriage.

  774. Now, this is a very bold prayer.

  775. I am going,

  776. I'm guessing you've probably

  777. never heard a prayer like this,

  778. prayed at a wedding.

  779. I'm going to be

  780. in a wedding

  781. in October,

  782. and I don't think

  783. I'm going to be bold enough

  784. to pray this prayer,

  785. although who knows,

  786. I've got a few months

  787. to kind of

  788. work myself up.

  789. But the prayer

  790. in verse 19

  791. is this.

  792. I am praying

  793. that you'd be filled

  794. at all times

  795. with delight,

  796. be intoxicated

  797. always in her love.

  798. In other words,

  799. I am praying

  800. for you

  801. in your marriage

  802. that you would have

  803. a lot of sex.

  804. And I am praying

  805. that that sex

  806. would be really,

  807. really good

  808. and that you would enjoy it.

  809. That is this father's prayer

  810. for his son.

  811. And so that's the urging

  812. of Solomon

  813. for those who are married,

  814. that they would pursue

  815. that same thing

  816. in their marriages.

  817. And of course,

  818. there's a lot of

  819. caveats, right?

  820. This is going to look

  821. different at different

  822. ages and stages.

  823. Writing to a youth here,

  824. he has a youth

  825. kind of sex drive.

  826. There are very real

  827. health issues

  828. and complications

  829. that are going to make

  830. this hard.

  831. There are times

  832. and seasons

  833. in a marriage

  834. where it would actually

  835. be unwise

  836. to pursue sex.

  837. And so we're talking

  838. about the ideal here.

  839. This is an ideal image

  840. that's given.

  841. It doesn't rule out

  842. exceptions.

  843. It doesn't rule out

  844. the complications

  845. of life

  846. in the real world.

  847. And yet,

  848. it's still an ideal

  849. that God holds out

  850. for his people

  851. to pursue

  852. in marriage.

  853. And so I'll say

  854. a couple things

  855. in general

  856. and then a couple things

  857. about specific situations.

  858. First of all,

  859. this is something

  860. for them to work on

  861. together.

  862. Both of them,

  863. if we follow the logic

  864. of some of this innuendo,

  865. are very excited

  866. about what's happening.

  867. The husband

  868. and the wife

  869. are very excited

  870. about their sexual

  871. relationship

  872. with one another.

  873. Which means

  874. that the application

  875. of this

  876. is not

  877. to use this passage

  878. as some sort

  879. of guilt manipulation.

  880. Do not go home

  881. and say,

  882. the pastor said

  883. we need to have sex.

  884. No,

  885. the application is

  886. go home,

  887. take responsibility,

  888. work on it together.

  889. What is it going

  890. to take from me

  891. to make this

  892. really good for you?

  893. What do we need

  894. to do

  895. so that we

  896. as a couple

  897. can move forward?

  898. What's the next step

  899. we have to make

  900. in working towards

  901. God's ideal?

  902. What is it that we need

  903. to do to protect

  904. each other

  905. from sexual temptation?

  906. We may not be

  907. at verse 19 tomorrow.

  908. That's true

  909. of all of God's ideals.

  910. But we can take

  911. our next step

  912. towards verse 19.

  913. And this may,

  914. right,

  915. this is going to take

  916. probably more time

  917. and more space

  918. the older you get.

  919. So again,

  920. different,

  921. it's going to look

  922. differently

  923. for different people,

  924. different stages

  925. and ages of life.

  926. And it may take

  927. some very,

  928. very painful conversations.

  929. If you're talking

  930. about what is this

  931. going to look like

  932. for us to move

  933. towards this ideal,

  934. it may involve

  935. some conversations

  936. about things

  937. you've never talked

  938. about,

  939. very painful things

  940. that have happened

  941. in the past,

  942. painful things you've

  943. done against each other,

  944. painful words

  945. that have been spoken.

  946. And that conversation

  947. is worth having.

  948. There may have to be

  949. things outside

  950. of the bedroom

  951. that get fixed

  952. before things

  953. inside the bedroom

  954. get fixed.

  955. It's part of the logic

  956. of marriage.

  957. It's part of how God

  958. uses the sexual

  959. relationship between

  960. a husband and a wife

  961. to encourage them

  962. to work on their

  963. relationship together.

  964. For some of you,

  965. I realize this is probably

  966. an especially painful topic

  967. and it's an especially

  968. painful topic

  969. because we may be

  970. so far away

  971. from verse 19

  972. that sex in marriage

  973. is a distant memory,

  974. right?

  975. Maybe it's something

  976. from months ago

  977. or years ago

  978. or decades ago.

  979. And the word

  980. of discouragement

  981. and defeat

  982. when we think

  983. about God's ideal,

  984. that is a word

  985. from the enemy,

  986. right?

  987. But Satan

  988. is the father

  989. of lies.

  990. He's the one

  991. who comes to lie

  992. to us

  993. and pile shame

  994. on us.

  995. It's God

  996. who comes

  997. to speak truth

  998. and hope

  999. to us.

1000. And so first of all,

  1001. we have to realize

  1002. there's hope.

  1003. There's real hope.

  1004. And so there's

  1005. a future,

  1006. right,

  1007. if we're in Christ.

  1008. You may feel lost,

  1009. but you're never alone.

  1010. I'll remind you

  1011. of the illustration

  1012. I gave you

  1013. when we talked

  1014. about sexual addiction,

  1015. specifically in 1 Peter,

  1016. the illustration

  1017. of the forest.

1018. If you walk 10 miles

  1019. into a forest,

1020. how long is it going

1021. to take to walk out?

  1022. It's going to take

1023. 10 miles to walk out.

  1024. So if you've walked

  1025. your way far,

  1026. far away

  1027. from verse 19,

1028. it can take a long time

  1029. to walk back

  1030. to verse 19.

  1031. Wherever you are,

  1032. wherever you are

  1033. in your journey,

  1034. take the next step.

  1035. The next step

  1036. might be realizing

  1037. and admitting

  1038. that you're lost.

  1039. And you're almost

  1040. certainly going

  1041. to need help

  1042. to walk your way

  1043. out of the forest.

  1044. If you've never gone

  1045. to marriage counseling,

  1046. that's not something

  1047. to be proud of.

  1048. There are people

  1049. who are proud

  1050. of the fact

  1051. that they've never

  1052. sought help.

  1053. I'm not saying

  1054. you should be ashamed

  1055. that you haven't.

  1056. Some people

  1057. don't need to go.

  1058. But part of embracing

  1059. the gospel

  1060. is knowing

  1061. that it's okay

  1062. to not be okay.

  1063. It's okay

1064. to talk to other people

  1065. about our failures

  1066. because it's okay

  1067. to fail.

  1068. God gives us grace

  1069. for that.

  1070. So the gospel

  1071. frees us up

  1072. to go and begin

  1073. to confess

  1074. and have hard conversations

  1075. with other people.

  1076. People who understand

  1077. the gospel,

  1078. they don't boast

  1079. in their strength.

  1080. They boast

  1081. in their weakness.

  1082. It takes courage

  1083. and strength

  1084. and reliance

  1085. on Jesus Christ

  1086. to begin to talk

  1087. about how bad things

1088. might be in your marriage

1089. and take the next step.

1090. If you take the next step,

1091. if you begin to talk

  1092. openly about these things,

1093. know that I'm proud of you.

  1094. I'm rooting for you.

1095. It takes a lot of courage

  1096. to talk about things

  1097. that are not right.

  1098. It takes vulnerability.

  1099. It takes confidence

  1100. and trust in God

1101. to know that it's going

  1102. to be okay.

  1103. And God does have

  1104. a future

1105. and a hope for you.

  1106. There is always

  1107. a future

  1108. for people

  1109. who belong

  1110. to Jesus Christ.

  1111. Now,

  1112. you might be wondering,

  1113. okay,

  1114. this is great.

  1115. I am so glad

  1116. for all those

  1117. married people

  1118. that they have

  1119. an outlet

  1120. to escape temptation.

  1121. What about

  1122. those of us

  1123. who are single?

  1124. What in the world

  1125. does this passage

1126. have to say to us?

  1127. Well,

  1128. one application

  1129. would be this,

1130. and it's the same thing

  1131. that Paul again

  1132. tells us

  1133. in 1 Corinthians 7.

  1134. Paul says,

  1135. it's better to marry

  1136. than to burn.

  1137. In other words,

  1138. if you are experiencing

  1139. a strong

  1140. and high sex drive

  1141. and you find it

  1142. challenging

  1143. to work with that

  1144. as a single person,

  1145. there's an app

  1146. for that.

  1147. It's called marriage.

  1148. It's not wrong

  1149. to be single.

  1150. There can be

  1151. goodness and singleness,

  1152. right?

  1153. I'm single.

  1154. I don't disapprove

  1155. of single people,

  1156. obviously.

  1157. And it's good

  1158. and right

  1159. to pursue marriage

  1160. as part

  1161. of your pursuit

  1162. of sexual purity.

  1163. it's okay

  1164. to say,

  1165. hey,

  1166. I'm not sure

1167. if I can do this

  1168. on my own.

  1169. I had a conversation

1170. with a friend of mine

  1171. not connected

  1172. with this church

  1173. in any way

  1174. in another part

  1175. of the country

  1176. earlier this week

  1177. who had incidentally

  1178. and he told me

  1179. he's in a place

  1180. where he's starting

  1181. to think he needs

  1182. to pursue marriage

  1183. more aggressively

  1184. in part

  1185. because he believes

1186. that's going to help him

  1187. live with greater purity

  1188. in his life.

  1189. And so if you're

  1190. a single person,

  1191. it is good

  1192. and right

  1193. to pursue marriage.

  1194. marriage.

  1195. You don't have to.

  1196. It's good and right

1197. to be single as well.

  1198. But if you feel

  1199. like your sex drive

  1200. is something

  1201. that is pulling you

  1202. away to temptation

  1203. constantly,

1204. that is a good reason

  1205. to pursue marriage.

  1206. And in fact,

  1207. the Proverbs

  1208. talks about marriage

  1209. as something

  1210. that we pursue.

  1211. Proverbs 18,

    Proverbs 18:22

  1212. verse 22 says,

  1213. it's a blessing

  1214. to a man

  1215. who finds a wife.

1216. That is a active word.

  1217. It's a pursuing word.

  1218. There are things

  1219. single people

  1220. can do

  1221. to increase

  1222. chances

  1223. and likelihood

  1224. of marriage.

1225. It doesn't make it simple,

  1226. right?

  1227. There are single people

  1228. who have done

  1229. everything they can

  1230. and they're still single.

  1231. So we don't make

  1232. assumptions

  1233. or judgments

  1234. about why someone's single.

  1235. There's also people

  1236. who are single

  1237. who think of themselves

  1238. as victims

  1239. when instead

  1240. there's all sorts

  1241. of things

  1242. they can do

  1243. to pursue it.

  1244. Whether you're a man

  1245. or a woman,

  1246. there are things

  1247. you can do

  1248. to make yourself

  1249. a more attractive partner.

  1250. Whether you're a man

  1251. or a woman,

1252. you may have to re-examine

  1253. some of your expectations

  1254. for marriage.

1255. You may have to think

1256. that some of what you want

  1257. or are desiring

  1258. is unrealistic.

1259. You may have to deal

  1260. with things

  1261. in your past

  1262. that cause you

  1263. to be unable

  1264. to make a commitment

  1265. like marriage.

1266. All of that to say

  1267. there are all sorts

  1268. of things

  1269. that we can do

  1270. as single people

  1271. if we desire marriage

  1272. to increase our odds.

  1273. Now, I'm not saying

  1274. it's going to happen

1275. and it's going to guarantee it.

  1276. I'm just saying

  1277. it's good and right

  1278. to pursue it.

  1279. And that is one

  1280. of the solutions

  1281. God has given us

  1282. for sexual temptation

  1283. is to pursue marriage

  1284. as single people.

  1285. There's nothing

  1286. to be ashamed of

  1287. by the way

  1288. of being single.

  1289. There's many good things

  1290. about being single

  1291. and there's also

1292. nothing to be ashamed about

  1293. of wanting

  1294. to be married

  1295. and pursuing marriage.

  1296. Marriage is not

  1297. the only answer

1298. it's one of the answers

  1299. that the Bible provides.

  1300. It's a reason Paul says

  1301. it's better to marry

  1302. than to burn.

1303. Now, I've told you before

  1304. that there are

  1305. many negative reasons

  1306. that we

  1307. go away from sin.

  1308. Proverbs lists

  1309. many of those.

1310. We've listed many of them

  1311. this morning.

  1312. But ultimately,

  1313. it's not the consequences

  1314. of sin

1315. that we want to use

  1316. as our greatest motivation.

  1317. We want

  1318. a greater love.

  1319. We talked about

  1320. our loves

  1321. in chapter

  1322. two.

1323. So we want to love

  1324. something more.

  1325. We want something

  1326. to be even greater

  1327. than the offer

  1328. of sexual satisfaction.

  1329. And sex is

  1330. a gift from God.

1331. He's given it to us

  1332. to point to something

  1333. that's even more glorious

  1334. than sex itself.

  1335. It's pointing,

  1336. it's looking forward

  1337. to an even greater

  1338. and fuller intimacy

  1339. and community

  1340. that we are going

  1341. to have

  1342. with God

  1343. in heaven.

1344. And so we can see it

  1345. knowing that it's good

1346. and knowing that it points

  1347. to something better.

  1348. We can desire

  1349. that something better.

  1350. There's a French man

  1351. whose name

  1352. I'm going to butcher,

  1353. Francois Marillac,

  1354. who struggled

  1355. with sexual temptation

  1356. and he looked at

  1357. the consequences

  1358. that came from it

  1359. and he said,

1360. at the end of the day,

  1361. what motivates me

  1362. is not the danger.

  1363. The warnings aren't

1364. what's most helpful to me.

  1365. What motivates me

  1366. is Jesus' words

  1367. in Matthew chapter five

  1368. when he says,

  1369. blessed are the pure

  1370. in heart

1371. for they shall see God.

  1372. It's my desire

  1373. to see God,

  1374. my love for him.

  1375. It's that greater love

  1376. that's greater

  1377. than my sexual drives.

1378. That is what motivates me

  1379. because I know

  1380. that that sex

  1381. is something small

  1382. that points

  1383. to something big

  1384. and that something big

  1385. is being able

  1386. to see God.

1387. And so that empowers us

  1388. and enables us.

  1389. Remember,

  1390. Jesus makes better promises.

  1391. He promises us

  1392. something better

  1393. than sexual pleasure.

  1394. He promises us

  1395. something better

  1396. than this strange woman

  1397. in chapter five

  1398. or a strange man.

  1399. He promises us himself

1400. and so we can look forward

  1401. to that as people

  1402. who are married.

  1403. There is something better

  1404. that God's given us.

1405. He's been faithful to us.

  1406. We can model

  1407. that faithfulness now

  1408. as we look forward

  1409. to our intimacy

1410. with him in the future.

  1411. As single people,

  1412. we can remain

  1413. sexually faithful

  1414. knowing whatever pleasure

  1415. we miss out on

  1416. in this world,

  1417. there is something

  1418. greater for us

  1419. in the next.

  1420. There is something

  1421. greater for us now.

1422. And so we haven't failed

1423. if we do not have

  1424. the sexual experiences

1425. that our culture tells us

  1426. we need to have

  1427. to be successful.

  1428. There is a greater

  1429. and better definition

  1430. of sex

  1431. that God gives us

  1432. in his word.

  1433. In his book,

  1434. Why Does God Care

  1435. Who I Sleep With?,

1436. a man named Sam Alberry

  1437. gives a wonderful illustration

  1438. of mistaking

  1439. something small

  1440. and missing

  1441. something that's big.

  1442. He says,

  1443. there's a scene

  1444. in the movie Amadeus

  1445. where the young Mozart

  1446. meets Emperor Joseph II

  1447. for the first time.

1448. As he is led in,

  1449. he is presented

  1450. before a man

  1451. who is dressed grandly

  1452. and looks to be

  1453. highly important.

  1454. So Mozart instinctively

  1455. bows low,

  1456. thinking him to be

  1457. the emperor.

  1458. The man looks horrified

  1459. and discreetly points

  1460. toward the side

  1461. of the room

  1462. where the actual emperor

1463. is sitting at a piano.

1464. It is an awkward moment

  1465. as Mozart realizes

  1466. what he has done

1467. and he quickly goes on

  1468. to acknowledge

  1469. the real emperor

  1470. appropriately.

  1471. He mistook

  1472. something small,

  1473. someone small

  1474. for someone great.

  1475. That's what we do

  1476. when we mistake sex

1477. as the end of our lives,

  1478. the greatest thing

  1479. we can experience.

  1480. Many of us need

  1481. to go through

  1482. a similar process

  1483. when it comes to

  1484. marriage and romance.

1485. When we first encounter it,

1486. it can seem so glorious

  1487. and resplendent

  1488. with significance

  1489. that we easily think

  1490. it must be ultimate.

1491. How else do we account

1492. for how it can make us feel?

  1493. But the fact remains

1494. that it is the purpose

  1495. of such things

  1496. to point us

  1497. to where fulfillment

  1498. is really meant

  1499. to be found.

  1500. In other words,

  1501. it's not sex

  1502. that gives us

  1503. our greatest fulfillment

1504. and meaning in this life.

  1505. That's what the world

  1506. wants to tell us.

  1507. Instead,

  1508. it is God

  1509. and our relationship

  1510. with Him.

  1511. He goes on,

  1512. one of the ways

  1513. that happens

  1514. is when we realize

  1515. that our relationships

  1516. cannot deliver

  1517. all that we expect

  1518. from them.

1519. If we look to them

  1520. to provide

  1521. ultimate satisfaction,

  1522. we will only

  1523. be disappointed.

  1524. C.S. Lewis

  1525. puts it so vividly,

  1526. we are half-hearted

  1527. creatures fooling about

  1528. with drink

  1529. and sex

  1530. and ambition

  1531. when infinite joy

  1532. is offered us.

  1533. Like an ignorant child

  1534. who wants to go

  1535. on making mud pies

  1536. in a slum

  1537. because he cannot

  1538. imagine what is meant

  1539. by the offer

  1540. of a holiday

  1541. at the sea.

  1542. We are far

  1543. too easily pleased.

  1544. To make sexual freedom

  1545. our ultimate goal

  1546. is to think

  1547. that sex

  1548. and romance

  1549. is simply

  1550. an end

  1551. in itself.

  1552. Sexual temptation

  1553. is real.

  1554. The destruction

  1555. that comes

  1556. from sexual temptation

  1557. is real.

  1558. God has offered us

  1559. many ways out.

  1560. One of them

  1561. is through the relationship

  1562. he gives

  1563. husbands and wives

  1564. in marriage.

1565. But even more than that,

  1566. he has offered us

  1567. something greater.

  1568. He's offered us

  1569. himself.

  1570. And so whether

  1571. single

  1572. or married,

  1573. we remain

  1574. sexually faithful

  1575. because of that,

  1576. because of Jesus.

  1577. We look forward

  1578. to that now.

  1579. We practice it now

  1580. and we'll celebrate it

  1581. even more

  1582. in the future.

  1583. So I invite you

  1584. to pray with me.

  1585. Our Father in Heaven,

  1586. we just thank you

  1587. and praise you

  1588. for your word

  1589. that reminds us

  1590. of what's true

  1591. when we're tempted

  1592. to believe lies.

  1593. We ask that you

  1594. would help us

  1595. in our sexuality,

  1596. the temptations

  1597. that face us,

1598. that for those of us

  1599. who are married,

  1600. that we would walk

  1601. more and more

  1602. together

  1603. in our sex lives,

  1604. that it would be

  1605. something that builds

  1606. up and nurtures

  1607. our marriage

  1608. and it protects us

  1609. from temptation.

  1610. We ask for those

1611. of us who are single,

  1612. for those who desire

  1613. a spouse,

1614. that you would provide it.

  1615. And for those

  1616. without a spouse,

  1617. that you would be

  1618. faithful to your promise

  1619. that there's no temptation

  1620. that you haven't

  1621. provided escape from.

  1622. That you'd give us

1623. not a love of pleasure,

1624. but an even greater love

  1625. of what you offer

1626. to us in your Son.

1627. We ask all of these things

  1628. in Jesus' name.

  1629. Amen.

  1630. Amen.
