  1. Good morning. My name is Matthew Capone, and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church,

  2. and it's my joy to bring God's Word to you today.

  3. This morning, we're going to be in Proverbs chapter 6, continuing our series this summer in the book of Proverbs.

    Proverbs 6 chapter mention

  4. And you'll remember that the book of Proverbs is a book about wisdom, and wisdom is skill in the art of living.

  5. Wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord, and wisdom continues with humility,

  6. that we have to be people who are willing to learn, who recognize we don't know everything,

  7. and we're open to being taught by God in His Word.

  8. As we come to Proverbs chapter 6, you may know Jesus has a lot of things to say about helping other people.

    Proverbs 6 chapter mention

  9. For example, in Matthew chapter 22, He tells us the sum of the law is to love God and to love others.

    Matthew 22 chapter mention

  10. And in fact, He tells us that we should love our neighbors as ourselves.

  11. And then in Matthew chapter 5, He tells us if someone asks you to go one mile with them, you should go two miles.

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  12. And if someone asks you for your tunic, if they sue you for your tunic, give them that, and then give them your cloak as well.

  13. In other words, you should be looking to help other people and to aid them,

  14. which raises a question, when do we not help people?

  15. What are the limits on Jesus' words there?

  16. How do we know wise ways to help other people and unwise ways?

  17. How can we help others grow in wisdom?

  18. What are ways that we end up helping others be foolish?

  19. We're going to be looking at that with Proverbs chapter 6 when it comes to our money.

    Proverbs 6 chapter mention

  20. And so we'll jump in right now.

  21. I invite you to turn with me in your Bible.

  22. You'll find it printed near the very end of your worship guide.

  23. Of course, you can find it on your phone.

  24. But wherever you read it, remember that this is God's word.

  25. And Proverbs chapter 30, verse 5, tells us that every word of God proves true.

    Proverbs 30:5

  26. He's a shield to those who take refuge in Him.

  27. And so that's why we read now, starting at verse 1.

  28. My son, if you have put up security for your neighbor, have given your pledge for a stranger,

  29. if you are snared in the words of your mouth, caught in the words of your mouth,

  30. then do this, my son, and save yourself.

  31. For you have come into the hand of your neighbor.

  32. Go, hasten, and plead urgently with your neighbor.

  33. Give your eyes no sleep and your eyelids no slumber.

  34. Save yourself like a gazelle from the hand of the hunter,

  35. like a bird from the hand of the fowler.

  36. I invite you to pray with me now as we come to this portion of God's word.

  37. Our Father in heaven, we thank you that you give us instruction,

  38. not just in spiritual matters, in our relationship with you.

  39. You give us instruction in practical matters.

  40. I saw last week that you give us instructions when it comes to our sexuality and our bodies.

  41. And this week, you give us instruction when it comes to how we manage our money,

  42. especially when it comes to helping others.

  43. So we thank you that you haven't left us to figure out life on our own,

  44. but you've given us your word.

  45. We ask that you would use your word this morning to make us wiser than we were before.

  46. And as we grow in wisdom, we would look and see Jesus as the one who teaches it to us,

  47. and we'd see him as more beautiful and glorious than we saw him before.

  48. And we ask these things in the mighty name of Jesus.

  49. Amen.

  50. There's a woman named Michelle Singletary,

  51. and she's a well-known financial columnist.

  52. She writes money advice.

  53. She writes for the Washington Post,

  54. which growing up outside Washington, D.C.,

  55. that was the paper often that we would receive as a family,

  56. but she syndicated in other newspapers as well.

  57. And she wrote an article back in 2016 in June

  58. warning against the dangers of co-signing for other people's loans.

  59. Now, as part of her column,

  60. she receives pushback,

  61. so people will send her stories about, you know,

  62. why she's wrong in the advice that she gives.

  63. And sometimes she'll run an article with that feedback.

  64. Hey, I gave you this advice,

  65. and here's kind of the other side of the story.

  66. Well, when she ran this article about not co-signing loans,

  67. the next month, in July, she ran another article.

  68. She said,

  69. usually I receive pushback,

  70. but this time around,

  71. I received mostly stories confirming everything that I told you.

  72. I received stories confirming the danger of co-signing loans.

  73. And so she shared a couple of those stories.

  74. One, a man had co-signed a loan for a woman he was dating.

  75. It had a terrible end to their relationship.

  76. And now, 10 years after the fact,

  77. he was still receiving notices every time her payments were late.

  78. He then went on to,

  79. she went on to share a story

  80. about someone who co-signed a loan on student loans.

  81. This person was promised they'd only be co-signed for a little bit,

  82. and they'd be replaced by the person's father.

  83. They had a similar experience.

  84. They're receiving calls when this person's late on their payments.

  85. It's a substantial amount.

  86. And one of these individuals realized when they went to buy a home

  87. that this credit was counted against them.

  88. So they had a harder time procuring credit

  89. than they would have had otherwise.

  90. And then she shares a horror story near the end

  91. about someone who co-signed a loan on a car,

  92. thinking they were doing a favor for a neighbor.

  93. However, they didn't realize they were also being signed

  94. onto the deed of the car.

  95. And so when this person failed to pay the insurance payments,

  96. they were the ones receiving calls about that.

  97. And the registration wasn't done correctly.

  98. They were receiving calls about that.

  99. This individual ended up paying all the fines for the car

  100. and, I believe, at one point had to go to court.

  101. She points out the first two stories.

  102. Both readers asked the same question,

  103. how in the world can I get removed from these loans?

  104. And I tell you this story because it's telling us

  105. the exact same thing we're being told in Proverbs 6.

  106. Do not put up security for other people.

  107. And, like these readers, if you do,

  108. do whatever you can to get out of it.

  109. So first, we're told not to do it.

  110. That's in verses 2 through 5.

  111. It's compared to a snare in verse 2 or trap.

  112. And then in verse 5, it's compared to a trap again.

  113. You have to save yourself like you're someone being hunted.

  114. Now, the word surety is used here, putting up security.

  115. And basically what would have happened in the Old Testament

  116. is you would have said,

  117. okay, this other person is going to receive a loan

  118. and I'm going to give you a piece of my property

  119. or you can claim my property if they don't pay.

  120. I'm going to be the one who's going to guarantee the loan.

  121. Of course, the problem is

  122. if they don't pay the loan,

  123. then your property gets taken.

  124. Now, today we could talk about sureties.

  125. It doesn't work quite the same way.

  126. The most common instance is the one here

  127. that this woman warns about.

  128. And it's this common instance of cosigning on a loan.

  129. Someone tells you, hey, I need this loan.

  130. All I need you to do is sign.

  131. I'm going to make all the payments.

  132. You don't need to worry about it.

  133. You're just going to really help me out and do me a solid.

  134. A warning, though, here is the same thing

  135. that these readers experience.

  136. So verses 2 and 5 tells us how terrible it is.

  137. And then verses 3 and 4 tell us what to do.

  138. If you find yourself in this sort of situation,

  139. get out of it.

  140. Get out of it as soon as possible.

  141. Don't let yourself sleep, is what we're told,

  142. until you're able to remove yourself from this situation.

  143. Because you know, as the author of Proverbs is telling you,

  144. as this woman warns in her column,

  145. this is a trap.

  146. This is a great way

  147. to find yourself making payments

  148. for someone else's property.

  149. Now, I've shared with you these stories from this article.

  150. As I've talked with people about this passage from Proverbs,

  151. telling them, hey, this is what we're preaching on this week,

  152. I've heard even more stories.

  153. So if you want to know all kinds of horror stories,

  154. just start asking people about their experiences

  155. or their friends' experiences with co-signing loans.

  156. These stories, of course, help us understand

  157. why this is a bad idea.

  158. And we read in our confession of faith this morning

  159. another verse in Proverbs that tells us how dangerous this is.

  160. Proverbs 22, verses 26 and 27 asks,

    Proverbs 22:26

  161. why should your bed be taken out from under you?

  162. In other words, you don't co-sign loans

  163. because you could end up losing your own bed.

  164. You could end up losing the very thing

  165. that you need to provide and support for yourself.

  166. You could bankrupt yourself.

  167. You could end up paying a monthly payment

  168. that you have no means to pay.

  169. You could end up destroying your credit.

  170. This is gonna be counted against you

  171. as your total debt potentially

  172. when you go and need to get a loan.

  173. And so it's gonna jeopardize your ability

  174. to provide for yourself

  175. and it's going to jeopardize your ability

  176. to provide for your family.

  177. And so that's why I brought it up

  178. with the Eighth Commandment.

  179. This is going to put yourself in a situation

  180. where other people might be stealing from you.

  181. Put yourself in a situation

  182. where you might be tempted to steal

  183. because it's such a bad idea financially.

  184. In her first article,

  185. this woman shares some statistics.

  186. 28% of co-signers see a drop in their credit scores

  187. because the person they helped did not pay

  188. or paid very late.

  189. 38% had to pay some or, wait for it,

  190. all of the loan payments

  191. because the primary person didn't pay.

  192. If they go and they have collectors come after you,

  193. you could end up paying late fees,

  194. have your wages attached.

  195. It's reported on your credit report.

  196. And as I mentioned before,

  197. you may be limited in your ability to borrow

  198. because if a lender looks at you,

  199. they're gonna see you already have

  200. this massive amount of debt.

  201. And then finally, she warns us,

  202. you might be thinking at this point,

  203. yes, this is all true.

  204. This is true of people who are irresponsible.

  205. You don't understand, right?

  206. I'm actually co-signing a loan

  207. for someone who's incredibly responsible.

  208. They just have this strange situation.

  209. It's an exception to the rule.

  210. Michelle warns us about that as well.

  211. That person might be incredibly responsible

  212. and you can't guarantee

  213. they're gonna keep their job.

  214. You have no control over their employment.

  215. So they may be the most responsible person in the world

  216. and then, right, the coronavirus hits.

  217. People are losing their jobs.

  218. This person's not able to pay.

  219. Guess who's on the hook for it?

  220. You are.

  221. You cannot, as she says,

  222. guarantee their health and their employment.

  223. In other words,

  224. we don't enable foolish behavior in other people.

  225. We don't help someone else to be foolish.

  226. A final reason we don't do this is,

  227. if banks don't trust them,

  228. why should you?

  229. If banks don't trust them,

  230. why should you?

  231. Think about this for a second.

  232. You know this if you've applied for a loan.

  233. You often get approved for more money

  234. than you should wisely spend.

  235. When I went to buy my house,

  236. I asked how much I had gotten approved for.

  237. I had gotten approved for a number

  238. that was way more than I could ever responsibly spend.

  239. I could sign,

  240. the bank would let me sign a loan

  241. for an amount of money

  242. that would put me under.

  243. They didn't need a cosigner for that.

  244. So imagine if I went and asked you

  245. to cosign a home loan

  246. how much money I'm borrowing.

  247. I must be borrowing

  248. a wildly irresponsible amount of money.

  249. If banks don't even trust someone,

  250. you have no reason,

  251. no position putting yourselves

  252. on the line for them.

  253. It can destroy you.

  254. It may hurt the person

  255. you're helping with that loan.

  256. Now, this raises a question.

  257. This is a church, Sunday morning.

  258. Why in the world are we talking

  259. about cosigning loans of all things?

  260. And why am I reading you financial statistics

  261. about what's going to happen

  262. if you cosign?

  263. Well, there's some principles here

  264. that lie behind what's going on.

  265. First, God commands us

  266. and calls us to care for the poor.

  267. We're going to see that

  268. all throughout the book of Proverbs.

  269. We're told in Proverbs 3.

  270. Remember, we've already seen this.

  271. We preached in Proverbs 3

  272. a couple weeks ago.

  273. Do not say to your neighbor,

  274. go and come again.

  275. Tomorrow I will give it

  276. when you have it with you.

  277. So we've been commanded

  278. to care for people who have needs, right?

  279. So we need warnings

  280. about what the exceptions are.

  281. Proverbs 19 tells us

  282. whoever is generous to the poor

  283. lends to the Lord

  284. and he will repay him for his deed.

  285. So you might be tempted to think,

  286. God commands me to care for the poor.

  287. This person is in a bad spot.

  288. They need me to cosign for them.

  289. I'm going to do

  290. what God's commanded me to do.

  291. No, the book of Proverbs

  292. gives us warnings.

  293. It gives us boundaries

  294. about God's commands.

  295. Proverbs 21 says,

  296. whoever closes his ear

  297. to the cry of the poor

  298. will himself call out

  299. and not be answered.

  300. Except if the poor

  301. is calling out

  302. and asking you

  303. to cosign alone.

  304. Then you close your ears.

  305. So part of the reason

  306. this is in the Bible

  307. is we need boundaries

  308. to give us wisdom

  309. when it comes to God's commands.

  310. There are, in other words,

  311. wise ways

  312. to help other people.

  313. There are unwise ways

  314. to help other people.

  315. So this is a book

  316. about wisdom.

  317. It's an incredibly practical book.

  318. We need to be warned

  319. and not be foolish.

  320. This highlights

  321. another thing for us

  322. which is the necessity

  323. of having wisdom, right?

  324. It's not enough

  325. to just have

  326. a good, tender, generous heart.

  327. You can be incredibly tender

  328. and generous

  329. and a loving person

  330. and still be a fool.

  331. Your heart can be

  332. in the right place

  333. and you can still do

  334. stupid and foolish things.

  335. And so this is a reminder

  336. to us that we need

  337. to study books

  338. like the book of Proverbs.

  339. We need to study wisdom

  340. to protect us

  341. from foolishness.

  342. Part of loving God

  343. is being wise

  344. in this world.

  345. Remember we talked earlier

  346. about the characters

  347. of Proverbs.

  348. We have the foolish person

  349. and the simple person.

  350. The simple person,

  351. one of his characteristics

  352. is that he has trouble

  353. connecting present actions

  354. to future consequences.

  355. Simple person has trouble

  356. connecting present actions

  357. to future consequences.

  358. So a simple person

  359. would have trouble

  360. thinking through

  361. what might happen

  362. to him or her

  363. if they co-signed a loan

  364. or they put up security

  365. for someone else.

  366. And so this just again

  367. highlights for us

  368. the importance of wisdom.

  369. We have to listen.

  370. It's not enough

  371. just to be a good,

  372. loving person.

  373. It's not enough

  374. to just want

  375. to care for the poor.

  376. I'll also point out

  377. that this highlights

  378. God's fatherly heart

  379. towards us.

  380. God gives us advice

  381. about practical things.

  382. We can trust him.

  383. We can love

  384. and praise God

  385. in part

  386. because he's willing

  387. to talk to us

  388. about the nitty-gritty

  389. details of life.

  390. We're going to hear

  391. about the nitty-gritty

  392. details of life

  393. in the book of Proverbs

  394. when it comes to relationships

  395. and emotions.

  396. We've heard about

  397. the nitty-gritty

  398. details of life

  399. in Proverbs

  400. when it comes

  401. to our sexuality

  402. last week.

  403. Of course,

  404. we'll hear about it again

  405. later in chapter 6

  406. and chapter 7.

  407. God loves us

  408. so much

  409. that he talks

  410. to us

  411. about granular

  412. things like this.

  413. God loves us

  414. so much

  415. that he's willing

  416. to talk to us

  417. about the details

  418. of how we handle

  419. our money.

  420. God cares about

  421. our lives

  422. not just on Sunday

  423. morning

  424. when we come

  425. to sing songs

  426. to him.

  427. He cares about

  428. our lives

  429. Monday through

  430. Saturday as well.

  431. There are things

  432. we do Monday

  433. through Saturday

  434. that are wise

  435. wise and unwise

  436. wise or foolish.

  437. And so if that's true

  438. if this is the

  439. floor of the law

  440. as I talked about

  441. earlier

  442. what's the ceiling

  443. then?

  444. If we put off

  445. putting up security

  446. for other people

  447. what is it

  448. that we actually

  449. put on?

  450. What should we

  451. be pursuing?

  452. Well,

  453. we pursue

  454. wise generosity.

  455. We pursue

  456. being generous

  457. and caring

  458. for ways

  459. in ways

  460. that are

  461. helpful.

  462. Wise generosity

  463. restores others.

  464. It doesn't

  465. enable them.

  466. Wise generosity

  467. restores and

  468. helps other

  469. people

  470. rather than

  471. enabling them

  472. to make foolish

  473. decisions.

  474. Remember I

  475. mentioned earlier

  476. if you had

  477. co-signed a

  478. loan for me

  479. in buying a

  480. house

  481. you would

  482. have been

  483. enabling me

  484. to make

  485. a terrible

  486. foolish

  487. decision.

  488. So we're

  489. generous in

  490. wise ways.

  491. You want to

  492. actually help

  493. me and enable

  494. me.

  495. You want to

  496. move me

  497. towards a

  498. place where

  499. I'm self-sustainable.

  500. God in his

  501. redemption

  502. does not just

  503. throw us

  504. handouts.

  505. He doesn't

  506. just buy us

  507. out of our

  508. sin and

  509. leave us

  510. there.

  511. He restores

  512. us.

  513. There's the

  514. process of

  515. sanctification

  516. where God

  517. is making

  518. us more

  519. and more

  520. into the

  521. image of

  522. Jesus Christ.

  523. He's making

  524. us look

  525. like him.

  526. There's

  527. something

  528. lazy about

  529. co-signing

  530. alone.

  531. It's easy

  532. to sign a

  533. piece of

  534. paper.

  535. It's hard

  536. to get

  537. alongside of

  538. someone and

  539. actually help

  540. them in the

  541. situation

  542. they're in.

  543. You're

  544. resolving a

  545. symptom rather

  546. than addressing

  547. the cause,

  548. the problem

  549. that underlies

  550. that symptom.

  551. And so

  552. there's a

  553. variety of

  554. things you

  555. could do.

  556. For example,

  557. you could give

  558. a gift to

  559. someone rather

  560. than enabling

  561. them to take

  562. out a loan.

  563. That gift

  564. means you

  565. measure how

  566. much can I

  567. actually afford.

  568. I know that

  569. I'm giving this

  570. money rather

  571. than wondering

  572. whether I'm

  573. giving this

  574. money, and so I

  575. can calculate

  576. that.

  577. Is this

  578. gift going

  579. to help

  580. them?

  581. There's a

  582. book that we

  583. go through

  584. sometimes in

  585. this church

  586. with our

  587. leaders called

  588. When Helping

  589. Hurts.

  590. And it talks

  591. about the fact

  592. sometimes you

  593. can hurt

  594. someone by

  595. helping them,

  596. and it gives

  597. categories for

  598. the helpful

  599. ways to come

  600. alongside someone.

  601. They give

  602. three categories.

  603. One is

  604. relief, one is

  605. rehabilitation, and

  606. one is

  607. development.

  608. These are

  609. different ways of

  610. giving sacrificially

  611. rather than

  612. destructively.

  613. We give and

  614. we help other

  615. people sacrificially

  616. rather than

  617. destructively.

  618. So I'll give

  619. you some

  620. examples.

  621. Let's say

  622. someone comes

  623. and they ask

  624. you to co-sign

  625. a loan for

  626. them on a

  627. car.

  628. Well, this

  629. might be a

  630. legitimate need,

  631. right?

  632. This person

  633. might actually

  634. need a car.

  635. What can you

  636. do instead of

  637. co-signing the

  638. loan?

  639. Well, maybe

  640. you need to

  641. gather together

  642. a group of

  643. other people

  644. who can all

  645. put in some

  646. money, and

  647. maybe you help

  648. this person

  649. buy a

  650. $4,000

  651. car rather

  652. than co-signing

  653. a loan for

  654. a $20,000

  655. car.

  656. That might be

  657. a wise way to

  658. help that

  659. person rather

  660. than a foolish

  661. way to help

  662. that person.

  663. Maybe that

  664. person, instead

  665. of needing

  666. help buying a

  667. car, maybe

  668. they need you

  669. to counsel

  670. them to use

  671. public transit

  672. instead.

  673. Maybe they

  674. need to do

  675. some budgeting.

  676. That would

  677. be a wise

  678. way.

  679. If you're

  680. helping someone

  681. with a home

  682. loan, by

  683. the way, a

  684. lot of

  685. co-signing

  686. happens

  687. between parents

  688. and children.

  689. Again, don't

  690. think that

  691. this is an

  692. exception, that

  693. these warnings

  694. are an

  695. exception when

  696. it comes to

  697. your kids.

  698. I could tell

  699. you more

  700. stories about

  701. that.

  702. I won't

  703. go there.

  704. Someone asked

  705. for help in

  706. purchasing a

  707. home.

  708. Maybe instead

  709. of helping

  710. them by

  711. co-signing,

  712. you help

  713. them with

  714. a down

  715. payment.

  716. You know

  717. how much

  718. you're able

  719. to afford

  720. and you

  721. give them

  722. a gift.

  723. Maybe instead

  724. of doing

  725. that, this

  726. person needs

  727. help getting

  728. better job

  729. skills.

  730. Maybe they

  731. need a

  732. higher paying

  733. job.

  734. That's a

  735. wise way to

  736. help someone.

  737. Maybe you

  738. pay for some

  739. job training

  740. for them.

  741. That's a

  742. way to give

  743. them development

  744. in those

  745. categories of

  746. relief,

  747. rehabilitation,

  748. and development.

  749. Maybe this

  750. person needs

  751. help budgeting

  752. and saving so

  753. that they can

  754. make a larger

  755. down payment on

  756. a car and

  757. they can have

  758. a lower

  759. monthly payment.

  760. If someone

  761. comes and

  762. asks you to

  763. co-sign for

  764. student loans

  765. for them,

  766. by the way,

  767. this is one of

  768. the worst

  769. things you

  770. can co-sign

  771. on,

  772. there are

  773. wise ways

  774. to help

  775. them.

  776. Maybe they

  777. need counseling

  778. to go to

  779. a cheaper

  780. school.

  781. Maybe they

  782. need to go

  783. to a community

  784. college rather

  785. than a four-year

  786. college.

  787. Maybe this

  788. person needs

  789. to do school

  790. at a slower

  791. pace so they

  792. can work and

  793. pay for it

  794. along the

  795. way.

  796. Whatever it

  797. is, we're

  798. not saying

  799. from this

  800. passage, don't

  801. help other

  802. people.

  803. What we're

  804. saying is

  805. there are

  806. wise ways

  807. that make

  808. other people

  809. wise and

  810. there are

  811. foolish ways

  812. that make

  813. other people

  814. foolish.

  815. We embrace

  816. the wise ways.

  817. We help

  818. people.

  819. We want to

  820. come alongside

  821. of them.

  822. We want to

  823. assist other

  824. people.

  825. We know that

  826. not everyone

  827. is in the

  828. situation they

  829. are because

  830. they're

  831. irresponsible.

  832. Some people

  833. are, some

  834. people aren't.

  835. Some people

  836. need help.

  837. We just need

  838. to help them

  839. in ways that

  840. don't endanger

  841. ourselves and

  842. our own

  843. families.

  844. We help

  845. them in

  846. ways that

  847. model God.

  848. God as

  849. our Father

  850. instructs us

  851. and God as

  852. our Father

  853. shows us how

  854. redemption works.

  855. He comes and

  856. he restores.

  857. He's the kind

  858. of Father who

  859. provides relief,

  860. rehabilitation,

  861. and development.

  862. He provides

  863. redemption for

  864. us.

  865. That's the

  866. logic of the

  867. gospel.

  868. That Jesus

  869. dies for us,

  870. he pays what

  871. he can afford,

  872. which is

  873. infinite.

  874. He's able to

  875. afford paying

  876. the cost of

  877. our sins and

  878. then he

  879. rehabilitates

  880. us.

  881. He restores

  882. us.

  883. He renews

  884. us.

  885. That's the

  886. way he

  887. helps people.

  888. That's the

  889. way we

  890. help people.

  891. Now I've

  892. told you

  893. before,

  894. when we

  895. talked in

  896. Proverbs

    Proverbs 3 chapter mention

  897. chapter 3,

  898. that the

  899. way Proverbs

  900. work is

  901. that Proverbs

  902. are not

  903. rigid rules.

  904. They're

  905. principles rather

  906. than rules.

  907. They're guidance

  908. about how life

  909. generally works,

  910. and so they

  911. need to be

  912. applied at the

  913. right place at

  914. the right time.

  915. What I don't

  916. want you to

  917. hear is that

  918. it is a

  919. sin to

  920. cosign a

  921. loan for

  922. someone.

  923. In fact,

  924. the Old

  925. Testament gives

  926. an example in

  927. the book of

  928. Genesis of a

  929. security being

  930. given, a

  931. surety.

  932. There's actually

  933. a law in the

  934. Old Testament

  935. about it, and

  936. the law is

  937. meant to

  938. protect the

  939. person who

  940. gives the

  941. surety.

  942. It says if

  943. you take

  944. someone's

  945. cloak as

  946. a surety,

  947. make sure you

  948. return that

  949. before it's

  950. cold at

  951. night.

  952. So it's

  953. not forbidden

  954. by God's

  955. law.

  956. It's allowed.

  957. It's just

  958. foolish.

  959. So what are

  960. the exceptions?

  961. When would

  962. be the

  963. situation that

  964. you would

  965. cosign a

  966. loan for

  967. someone?

  968. I'd say

  969. there's a

  970. few principles.

  971. One of

  972. them we

  973. see in

  974. that verse

  975. in Proverbs

    Proverbs 22 chapter mention

  976. chapter 22,

  977. which I

  978. will refer

  979. to as the

  980. bed

  981. principle.

  982. Whatever you

  983. do, if you

  984. cosign a

  985. loan, make

  986. sure that

  987. you are

  988. prepared to

  989. pay every

  990. single payment

  991. on that

  992. loan, and

  993. that doing

  994. so means you

  995. won't lose

  996. your bed.

  997. So you need

  998. to have enough

  999. money in your

  1000. budget that you

  1001. can add that

  1002. payment for as

  1003. many years as

  1004. it lasts, and

  1005. it will not

  1006. hurt you and

  1007. your family

  1008. financially.

  1009. You've got to

  1010. make sure you

  1011. pass the

  1012. bed rule.

  1013. You've got to

  1014. be willing then

  1015. to be able to

  1016. pay it, and

  1017. then you have

  1018. to ask, are

  1019. you enabling

  1020. bad behavior?

  1021. Are you

  1022. enabling someone

  1023. to take out

  1024. a loan that's

  1025. irresponsible for

  1026. them to take

  1027. out?

  1028. There might be

  1029. some exceptions,

  1030. right?

  1031. And I'll give

  1032. you an example

  1033. of one exception

  1034. to cosigning a

  1035. loan or putting

  1036. a surety.

  1037. When we got

  1038. our loan on

  1039. this church

  1040. building, we

  1041. did not have

  1042. a cosigner, but

  1043. we did have

  1044. someone who

  1045. put up $500,000

  1046. as a surety, I

  1047. guess is what you

  1048. could say.

  1049. They weren't

  1050. cosigning, they

  1051. weren't taking

  1052. responsibility for

  1053. our payments, but

  1054. they said, I

  1055. will be on the

  1056. hook for $500,000

  1057. if this church

  1058. falls down.

  1059. For this

  1060. individual, this

  1061. individual who

  1062. did this is

  1063. worth hundreds of

  1064. millions of

  1065. dollars.

  1066. dollars.

  1067. So, had

  1068. they had to

  1069. pay that

  1070. $500,000, they

  1071. would have

  1072. passed the

  1073. bed principle.

  1074. He would

  1075. have not

  1076. lost his

  1077. bed.

  1078. It's a

  1079. slightly different

  1080. situation with

  1081. a church than

  1082. a person, and

  1083. at the end of

  1084. the day, when

  1085. we renegotiated

  1086. our loan last

  1087. fall, we had

  1088. this person

  1089. released from

  1090. the loan.

  1091. So, this

  1092. man never

  1093. ended up paying

  1094. that $500,000.

  1095. He's not on

  1096. our loan

  1097. anymore.

  1098. The bank

  1099. said, wow,

  1100. you guys have

  1101. done a fantastic

  1102. job paying your

  1103. loan payments

  1104. every month.

  1105. We're going to

  1106. set this up

  1107. well, and this

  1108. man's off the

  1109. hook.

  1110. So, there are

  1111. exceptions.

  1112. The fact that we

  1113. got him removed,

  1114. he never paid

  1115. that $500,000,

  1116. proves that that

  1117. was an exception

  1118. to the rule,

  1119. right?

  1120. He decided to

  1121. do that.

  1122. He's a Christian

  1123. man.

  1124. He wanted to

  1125. help a church.

  1126. Ended up

  1127. proving to be

  1128. wise.

  1129. But again, it's

  1130. exceptions like

  1131. that that prove

  1132. the rule.

  1133. If you're

  1134. cosigning, make

  1135. sure you're like

  1136. this man.

  1137. You can afford

  1138. to pay it and

  1139. not lose your

  1140. bed.

  1141. So, we

  1142. don't apply

  1143. Proverbs

  1144. rigidly.

  1145. We understand

  1146. there are

  1147. situations where

  1148. it applies,

  1149. situations where

  1150. it doesn't

  1151. apply.

  1152. This one's

  1153. going to

  1154. apply most

  1155. of the time,

  1156. almost all

  1157. of the time.

  1158. Of course, I've

  1159. been telling you

  1160. that Jesus is

  1161. our great

  1162. wisdom teacher,

  1163. and Jesus

  1164. teaches wise

  1165. generosity as

  1166. well.

  1167. He tells us a

  1168. story in Luke

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  1169. chapter 10 about

  1170. the Good Samaritan.

  1171. If you're familiar

  1172. with this, you

  1173. know that there's

  1174. a man who comes

  1175. and asks Jesus,

  1176. what does it

  1177. mean for me to

  1178. love my neighbor?

  1179. Jesus tells a

  1180. story about a

  1181. man who's beaten.

  1182. He's on the

  1183. side of the

  1184. road and

  1185. there's religious

  1186. people who look

  1187. him over who

  1188. don't help him

  1189. and there's a

  1190. Samaritan who

  1191. comes and he

  1192. does help this

  1193. man.

  1194. What does he do

  1195. for him?

  1196. Well, he takes

  1197. him.

  1198. He gives him

  1199. relief.

  1200. He takes him

  1201. to a place

  1202. where he can

  1203. stay.

  1204. He gives his

  1205. own money as

  1206. a gift, right?

  1207. He's actually

  1208. being generous,

  1209. but in a way

  1210. that's wise.

  1211. He knows this

  1212. man is in a

  1213. bad position

  1214. not because of

  1215. his foolishness

  1216. but because of

  1217. someone else's

  1218. violence.

  1219. So he helps

  1220. him.

  1221. He gives his

  1222. own money to

  1223. the innkeeper

  1224. and he says,

  1225. if you need

  1226. any more, I'm

  1227. here.

  1228. I'm going to

  1229. be the one

  1230. who pays it.

  1231. That's wise

  1232. generosity, right?

  1233. That's a way

  1234. to care for

  1235. others.

  1236. Jesus tells us

  1237. in Matthew

    Matthew 25 chapter mention

  1238. chapter 25,

  1239. there's going

  1240. to be a

  1241. time where

  1242. he looks at

  1243. people.

  1244. He tells us

  1245. the story of

  1246. the sheep

  1247. and the goats

  1248. and he's

  1249. going to

  1250. say to

  1251. the sheep,

  1252. whatever you

  1253. did to one

  1254. of the least

  1255. of my brothers,

  1256. you did it

  1257. to me.

  1258. So Jesus

  1259. teaches us,

  1260. he commands

  1261. us to care

  1262. and help

  1263. for other

  1264. people.

  1265. He tells us

  1266. when we help

  1267. other people,

  1268. we are doing

  1269. it for him,

  1270. we're doing

  1271. it to him.

  1272. And so we

  1273. want to be

  1274. generous people.

  1275. We want to

  1276. be people who

  1277. help the poor,

  1278. who help people

  1279. in need.

  1280. Jesus empowers

  1281. this as well.

  1282. We see in

  1283. Acts chapter 2,

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  1284. in Acts chapter 4,

    Acts 4 chapter mention

  1285. Jesus' spirit,

  1286. the Holy Spirit

  1287. is enabling people

  1288. to share generously.

  1289. They're sharing

  1290. whatever they have

  1291. with people

  1292. who are in need.

  1293. And so this is

  1294. the character

  1295. of the Christian

  1296. community.

  1297. It's the character

  1298. that Jesus gives

  1299. to us.

  1300. He just gives it

  1301. to us in wise

  1302. ways.

  1303. And then Jesus

  1304. models it,

  1305. of course,

  1306. for it.

  1307. He models it

  1308. and empowers it.

  1309. He models it

  1310. and empowers it

  1311. through the way

  1312. that he lives

  1313. on this earth,

  1314. restoring people.

  1315. And of course,

  1316. ultimately,

  1317. he models and

  1318. empowers it for us

  1319. in his death

  1320. on the cross.

  1321. He shows us

  1322. what wise

  1323. generosity looks

  1324. like.

  1325. For those who

  1326. are willing to

  1327. repent of their

  1328. sins and follow

  1329. after him,

  1330. turning away from

  1331. sin and towards

  1332. righteousness,

  1333. admitting that they

  1334. have no hope

  1335. in this world

  1336. aside from Jesus,

  1337. that outside of

  1338. their hope and

  1339. faith and trust

  1340. in Jesus,

  1341. they will face

  1342. eternal punishment

  1343. and separation

  1344. from God.

  1345. Jesus offers

  1346. through his death

  1347. forgiveness and

  1348. restoration.

  1349. He offers relief

  1350. and rehabilitation.

  1351. That offer is

  1352. for us.

  1353. It's for you

  1354. this morning,

  1355. for anyone

  1356. who has repented

  1357. of their sins

  1358. or who repents

  1359. of their sins.

  1360. Jesus makes

  1361. that offer,

  1362. that generous offer,

  1363. and it doesn't

  1364. lose him his bed.

  1365. Jesus can afford

  1366. it.

  1367. Jesus can afford

  1368. to offer it

  1369. because he's

  1370. earned it

  1371. through his

  1372. death.

  1373. And then he

  1374. restores us,

  1375. right?

  1376. He's working

  1377. with us.

  1378. Jesus isn't

  1379. lazy.

  1380. He doesn't just

  1381. pay off the

  1382. debt of sin.

  1383. He's restoring

  1384. us.

  1385. He's renewing

  1386. us into his

  1387. image.

  1388. And so he's

  1389. making us

  1390. people who

  1391. look like him.

  1392. We do not

  1393. need a

  1394. cosigner,

  1395. right?

  1396. We didn't

  1397. need someone

  1398. to come

  1399. and say,

  1400. well,

  1401. if they

  1402. can't pay

  1403. the debt,

  1404. I will.

  1405. There's no

  1406. way we

  1407. could pay

  1408. the debt

  1409. of our

  1410. sin.

  1411. And so we

  1412. couldn't have

  1413. a cosigner.

  1414. We needed

  1415. someone to

  1416. completely pay

  1417. our debt.

  1418. We needed

  1419. Jesus.

  1420. And so we

  1421. look to him.

  1422. We look to him

  1423. for wise

  1424. generosity.

  1425. We know

  1426. that Jesus

  1427. is at work

  1428. restoring us,

  1429. and he's

  1430. restoring this

  1431. world.

  1432. And so we

  1433. can follow

  1434. after him,

  1435. restoring others,

  1436. and restoring

  1437. this world

  1438. that Jesus

  1439. loves and

  1440. died for

  1441. in ways

  1442. that are

  1443. wise

  1444. rather than

  1445. foolish.

  1446. Please pray

  1447. with me.

  1448. Our Father

  1449. in heaven,

  1450. we thank you

  1451. that you

  1452. give us

  1453. nitty-gritty

  1454. instructions

  1455. about life.

  1456. You teach

  1457. us how to

  1458. walk in

  1459. this world,

  1460. not just in

  1461. repentance to

  1462. you, but in

  1463. ways that

  1464. help build

  1465. others up

  1466. rather than

  1467. tear them

  1468. down.

  1469. We ask that

  1470. you'd grow

  1471. us up in

  1472. wisdom,

  1473. especially when

  1474. it comes to

  1475. money, and

  1476. that we would

  1477. look to you

  1478. as our model

  1479. and our

  1480. example, that

  1481. we would

  1482. embrace your

  1483. restoration of

  1484. us, and

  1485. that it would

  1486. cause us to

  1487. work for

  1488. restoration of

  1489. others.

  1490. We thank

  1491. you that

  1492. you give

  1493. us wisdom

  1494. through Jesus,

  1495. and so we

  1496. ask for that

  1497. wisdom in

  1498. his name.

  1499. Amen.

  1500. Amen.
