  1. And we're glad that you're here, not because we're filling seats, but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  2. And as we follow Jesus together, we're convinced that there's no one so good.

  3. They don't need God's grace and no one so bad that they can't have it.

  4. And so God has something to say to everyone in his word, which is why we come back week after week to open up the Bible and hear what God has to say to us.

  5. We're continuing our series in the book of Proverbs.

  6. And you'll remember that Proverbs is a book about wisdom.

  7. And wisdom is skill in the art of living.

  8. Wisdom helps us to navigate the path of life that God's given us.

  9. And wisdom helps us to stay on the path.

  10. Wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord.

  11. That's the foundation of wisdom, the place that it starts.

  12. And wisdom continues.

  13. It grows with humility.

  14. Unless we're humble, we can never expect to become wise.

  15. Because it's only the humble person who knows they have more to learn.

  16. And it's only by learning more that we become wise.

  17. We've been looking at a variety of practical topics.

  18. We looked the last couple weeks at the idea of work and our money.

  19. And this week we are turning to our words.

  20. Now this passage, we're in Proverbs chapter 6.

    Proverbs 6 chapter mention

  21. We're going to look at verses 12 through 19.

  22. This passage speaks about a little bit more than words.

  23. But there's a special focus on words.

  24. And so that's going to be our focus as well.

  25. And as we do that, then I invite you to turn with me either in your Bible or near the end of your worship guide or in your phone to Proverbs chapter 6.

    Proverbs 6 chapter mention

  26. And remember as we come to this passage that this is God's word.

  27. And Proverbs chapter 30, verse 5 tells us that every word of God proves true.

    Proverbs 30:5

  28. He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.

  29. And so that's why we read now, starting at verse 12.

  30. A worthless person, a wicked man, goes about with crooked speech, winks with his eyes, signals with his feet, points with his finger, with perverted heart devises evil, continually sowing discord.

  31. Verse 15.

  32. Therefore calamity will come upon him suddenly.

  33. In a moment he will be broken beyond healing.

  34. There are six things that the Lord hates.

  35. Seven that are an abomination to him.

  36. Halty eyes, a lying tongue, and hands that shed innocent blood.

  37. A heart that devises wicked plans, feet that make haste to run to evil.

  38. A false witness who breathes out lies, and one who sows discord among brothers.

  39. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  40. Our Father in heaven, we just thank you again that you speak to us.

  41. And we ask that you would do that again this morning.

  42. Just through these words in this chapter of the Bible, you'd remind us that this is your word that brings life.

  43. And you'd do that for us.

  44. That you'd use your word to encourage us.

  45. And you'd use it to challenge us.

  46. We thank you most of all that you are flesh in your son, Jesus Christ.

  47. And it's in his name that we pray.

  48. Amen.

  49. If you've been in Colorado for any length of time, you know that people in Colorado love their guns.

  50. Now, whether you like that fact or don't like that fact, not the point.

  51. You know that if you have a weapon, if you're going to use lethal force, there are only a few situations where you're actually allowed to do that.

  52. And primarily, it's when your life is actually in danger.

  53. If your life is in danger, then there's self-defense at play.

  54. And there's almost no exceptions to that rule.

  55. So if your life is not in danger, you use lethal force, you're going to be in danger.

  56. In the state of Colorado, with one exception.

  57. Do you all know what that exception is?

  58. If you have good reason to suspect someone is committing first-degree arson.

  59. Now, I'm not encouraging you to do that.

  60. I'm not a legal expert.

  61. Okay, don't go and use lethal force against someone who's committing first-degree arson.

  62. And then come back and talk to me about it.

  63. But the point is this, right?

  64. That there are some things that are so destructive that they require that level of force.

  65. And in most situations, it's only if your life is threatened except when someone is looking to destroy by fire.

  66. Which raises the question, why?

  67. Why would that be the exception to the rule?

  68. Well, there's a lot of different reasons, right?

  69. One, fire is so incredibly destructive.

  70. Even if they're not threatening your life right now, it could ultimately end up threatening a life.

  71. Another reason I would imagine is we're in the state of Colorado.

  72. Wildfires can happen like that, right?

  73. And so someone's, they're looking to burn something down.

  74. They could end up destroying not just someone's home.

  75. They could end up destroying many, many lives.

  76. And so this is something that's incredibly serious and dangerous.

  77. And that's why it's the exception to the rule.

  78. That's why it's the portion of the law that falls outside of the general principle.

  79. The author of the book of James in the New Testament, in fact, compares our tongues, our words, to fire.

  80. And that's the kind of situation that we see in this passage.

  81. We learn in verse 12 that this is something that's about words.

  82. It's a worthless person who goes around with crooked speech.

  83. And then in verse 17, we see the same thing.

  84. It's a lying tongue.

  85. Now, what makes first-degree arson different from other types of arson,

  86. that to be first-degree, it has to be intentional.

  87. You have to want to be burning something down.

  88. You have to want to destroy someone's property.

  89. And it's that same intention that we see of this man, this worthless person.

  90. Verse 14, he's devising evil.

  91. Okay, this isn't an accident that he's causing trouble.

  92. He is sowing discord.

  93. There's a process here, just like you'd sow seeds in the ground.

  94. He's sowing these words, knowing he's going to get the result he wants.

  95. And then we see in verse 18, there's a plan that's being executed.

  96. He devises wicked plans.

  97. And so as much as he can, in whatever he does, this person stirs up trouble.

  98. It is first-degree destruction.

  99. It's intentional.

  100. He wants to cause trouble.

  101. He wants to destroy something.

  102. And then we find out that it's not just that it's intentional,

  103. but just like arson, this is destructive.

  104. It's deceptive.

  105. Verse 13, he's doing all these strange things with his body language.

  106. Now, it's not entirely clear what's going on here

  107. since we've been separated by so many years from the original audience of Proverbs,

  108. but most likely he's trying to signal here.

  109. He's doing something that's underhanded.

  110. He's operating in a way that's maybe a back channel.

  111. And his plan, as we saw before in verse 18, is meant to lead to evil.

  112. And so this person is using his words to destroy.

  113. He's using his words in a way, rather than building up the community, he's burning it down.

  114. Our world has not changed that much since the book of Proverbs.

  115. We're still humans.

  116. And so the same things happen today.

  117. It happens in a variety of ways.

  118. This could be someone who's just absolutely lying, right?

  119. They're telling something that's not true.

  120. It could also be someone who's telling half-truths, right?

  121. They're telling part of the truth, but not the whole truth.

  122. And the part of the truth they're telling is just enough to make you believe something that's not true.

  123. It's meant to lead you along the path.

  124. It could be someone who's repeating things that are very true,

  125. and they don't need to be repeated.

  126. People don't need to know.

  127. You don't want people knowing about the mistake that you made 10 years ago

  128. and that you've reconciled with people for, right?

  129. But there's a temptation to keep repeating these mistakes over and over in the community,

  130. that there's a half-life to someone's failures that they're never able to overcome.

  131. One way this happens in the church,

  132. there will be people who stir up division,

  133. claiming to be concerned about the purity of the church.

  134. They believe something's wrong in terms of a doctrine.

  135. Or a practice.

  136. And that's a right thing to be concerned about.

  137. But they're concerned about the purity of the church

  138. in a way that destroys the peace of the church.

  139. Rather than beginning, as Jesus talks about in Matthew 18,

  140. in small conversations, one-on-one with leaders,

  141. instead they go around, they have a whisper campaign in the congregation.

  142. They share their complaints with everyone else.

  143. They tell the whole congregation, their whole friend group, their whole small group,

  144. their life group, about the things that are making them upset

  145. and how they think what's happening is wrong.

  146. And so while they think that their cause is right and righteous,

  147. and maybe it is,

  148. they pursue it in a way that this passage tells us is an abomination.

  149. It's possible to be concerned about the purity of the church,

  150. but not the peace of the church.

  151. And in fact, God is passionate about both of those things.

  152. God loves the purity of his church.

  153. He died for it.

  154. God also loves the peace of his church.

  155. God loves the peace of the church.

  156. We see people like this also on Facebook.

  157. Many passive-aggressive posts, right?

  158. People share their experiences with a friend that they haven't spoken to,

  159. and they say, oh, this is just anonymous, right?

  160. But they put enough details in there that everyone knows who they're talking about.

  161. Instead of going and speaking with that person one-on-one,

  162. they're airing it for the entire internet to see.

  163. Facebook is filled with people who wink with their eyes,

  164. signal with their feet,

  165. and point with their fingers.

  166. In fact, we could add just social media in general.

  167. This person repeats things in private

  168. that maybe need to remain secret, right?

  169. They may need to remain between two people.

  170. You and someone else have a disagreement.

  171. You reconcile.

  172. You resolved it.

  173. It doesn't need to be discussed anymore.

  174. And yet this divisive person goes around,

  175. and they share those things.

  176. Maybe there's things in private that a group knows

  177. that doesn't need to be shared outside of the group,

  178. and yet this person goes and shares them in public.

  179. They make sure everyone knows.

  180. They are family members like this.

  181. Perhaps you have someone in your family who calls everyone.

  182. They stay connected because they want to know the news,

  183. and then they redistribute it to all the other family members.

  184. And there's a special focus, though.

  185. There's sort of a tabloid news distributor.

  186. There's a special focus on the negative news,

  187. and they'll share it with you in a way

  188. that looks like they're trying to be concerned,

  189. but really they're making sure that you know

  190. about all the tension, you know,

  191. in your brother and sister-in-law's marriage

  192. that you didn't need to know about.

  193. And they're making sure that you know

  194. about all the ways that your grandchild is misbehaving.

  195. This person is the divisive person

  196. that stirs up division.

  197. Then there's the person who pretends

  198. to be a trusted confidant, right?

  199. They come to you.

  200. They tell you, I'm not gonna share this with anyone,

  201. but I'm here for you,

  202. and I wanna make sure you have a place.

  203. And I, you know, this is just between you and me.

  204. And the next thing you know,

  205. that thing that you only shared with that one person,

  206. everyone's aware of it.

  207. And if you've lived in this world for any length of time,

  208. I'm confident this has happened to you at some point,

  209. perhaps continues to happen to you.

  210. Kids,

  211. this is what we talk about

  212. is the difference between telling and tattling.

  213. If you are telling,

  214. if you're reporting,

  215. you're sharing something

  216. that an adult needs to know.

  217. It's a problem

  218. that you can't solve on your own,

  219. and someone's actually in danger.

  220. Someone's not in danger,

  221. and maybe you can resolve the problem on your own.

  222. These are principles we would go over

  223. when I was a teacher.

  224. You are not telling,

  225. you are tattling.

  226. What's the goal of tattling?

  227. It's to stir up division.

  228. One who tattles,

  229. verse 19,

  230. sows discord among brothers.

  231. And that's often the goal of the tattler.

  232. They wanna get someone else in trouble.

  233. They wanna stir things up

  234. because something,

  235. it's boring right now, right?

  236. The one who tells

  237. is looking to maintain peace,

  238. to preserve peace.

  239. The one who tattles

  240. is looking to destroy peace,

  241. to break it down.

  242. And so no matter what our age

  243. or our stage,

  244. we need to be careful

  245. with our words.

  246. Now I'll mention,

  247. sometimes rules like these

  248. that I've outlined for you

  249. are abused

  250. to protect people in power.

  251. Someone powerful

  252. will do something wrong

  253. or abusive,

  254. they'll use their power differential

  255. to get advantages

  256. they shouldn't,

  257. and it's covered up

  258. under the guise

  259. of maintaining peace.

  260. That is also

  261. an abomination.

  262. There are,

  263. as always in Proverbs,

  264. there are exceptions to things,

  265. but even then,

  266. there's a right way

  267. to go about

  268. confronting abusive power.

  269. So if someone

  270. is using these verses

  271. to cover up

  272. abuse,

  273. especially a heinous form

  274. of abuse,

  275. a high-handed form

  276. of abuse,

  277. that itself

  278. is an abuse

  279. of these verses.

  280. But in general,

  281. those are the exceptions,

  282. not the rule.

  283. In general,

  284. we're looking with our words

  285. to preserve the community

  286. rather than to tear it down.

  287. And as we've seen

  288. with the last couple passages

  289. in Proverbs 6,

  290. there's an underlying principle.

  291. There's something

  292. underneath all of this

  293. that helps us understand

  294. why it matters.

  295. And the principle

  296. is this,

  297. divisiveness is a very

  298. serious sin.

  299. We're told it's

  300. an abomination,

  301. verse 16,

  302. and it's a very

  303. serious sin

  304. because God

  305. loves the community.

  306. It's a serious sin

  307. because God

  308. loves the community.

  309. We live

  310. in an individualistic

  311. culture

  312. and age

  313. where the rights

  314. of the individual,

  315. the privileges

  316. of the individual

  317. are put

  318. above everything else.

  319. It is hard

  320. for us,

  321. even as Christians,

  322. to wrap

  323. our minds around

  324. how much

  325. God cares

  326. about the good

  327. and the unity

  328. of the community.

  329. It is hard

  330. for us

  331. to wrap

  332. our minds

  333. as Western Americans

  334. around how

  335. much

  336. God cares

  337. about the unity

  338. of the church.

  339. There are not

  340. many things

  341. in the Bible

  342. that are referred

  343. to as an abomination.

  344. This is one of them.

  345. God takes

  346. very seriously

  347. the unity

  348. of the church.

  349. God takes

  350. groups

  351. and communities

  352. more seriously

  353. than we do.

  354. God

  355. is not

  356. as individualistic

  357. as we are.

  358. And just

  359. like someone

  360. committing

  361. first degree

  362. arson,

  363. it does not

  364. take a lot

  365. to burn

  366. a community

  367. down.

  368. Just like

  369. someone

  370. committing

  371. first degree

  372. arson,

  373. it does not

  374. take much

  375. to burn

  376. the community

  377. down.

  378. And so

  379. we see here

  380. that judgment

  381. is very

  382. serious.

  383. God

  384. is not

  385. afraid

  386. to use

  387. lethal force

  388. for those

  389. who destroy

  390. the community

  391. with their

  392. words.

  393. That's what

  394. we see in

  395. verse 15.

  396. Calamity

  397. will come

  398. upon him

  399. suddenly.

  400. In a

  401. moment,

  402. he will

  403. be broken

  404. beyond

  405. healing.

  406. In other

  407. words,

  408. your words

  409. ultimately

  410. will catch

  411. up with

  412. you.

  413. They will

  414. probably

  415. catch up

  416. with you

  417. in this

  418. life,

  419. and they

  420. will

  421. ultimately

  422. catch up

  423. with you

  424. at the

  425. end of

  426. your

  427. life.

  428. Of course,

  429. we know

  430. this more

  431. and more

  432. as people

  433. living in

  434. an age

  435. of technology.

  436. You'll

  437. hear more

  438. frequently

  439. news articles

  440. about court

  441. cases where

  442. the private

  443. text messages

  444. became public,

  445. right?

  446. Where the

  447. private emails

  448. became public.

  449. I shared

  450. with one

  451. new member's

  452. class.

  453. I grew up

  454. in a church

  455. right outside

  456. Washington,

  457. D.C.,

  458. and there

  459. were folks

  460. there who

  461. worked on

  462. Capitol Hill,

  463. and one of

  464. them told us

  465. that the rule

  466. was that you

  467. would never

  468. type something

  469. in an email

  470. that you

  471. would be

  472. unwilling to

  473. see on the

  474. front page

  475. of the

  476. Washington Post

  477. the next

  478. day.

  479. That was the

  480. rule you were

  481. meant to follow,

  482. because it was

  483. very likely,

  484. right,

  485. that what is

  486. private is going

  487. to be made

  488. public?

  489. Well,

  490. the Bible

  491. tells us

  492. something even

  493. more frightening.

  494. Jesus,

  495. our great

  496. wisdom teacher,

  497. remember Matthew

    Matthew 12 chapter mention

  498. chapter 12,

  499. he's an even

  500. greater teacher

  501. than Solomon.

  502. He's our great

  503. and greater

  504. wisdom teacher,

  505. tells us that

  506. every word

  507. is going to be

  508. made public

  509. one day.

  510. Every text message

  511. is going to be

  512. made public

  513. one day.

  514. Every email

  515. is going to be

  516. on the front

  517. page of the

  518. Washington Post.

  519. In Luke

    Luke 8 chapter mention

  520. chapter 8,

  521. Jesus says

  522. this,

  523. for nothing

  524. is hidden

  525. that will

  526. not be

  527. made manifest,

  528. nor is

  529. anything

  530. secret that

  531. will not

  532. be made

  533. known and

  534. come to

  535. light.

  536. And then

  537. Jesus,

  538. talking to

  539. the Pharisees

  540. in Matthew

    Matthew 12 chapter mention

  541. chapter 12,

  542. tells them

  543. this,

  544. you brood

  545. of vipers,

  546. how can

  547. you speak

  548. good when

  549. you are

  550. evil?

  551. For out

  552. of the

  553. abundance

  554. of the

  555. heart,

  556. the mouth

  557. speaks.

  558. The good

  559. person out

  560. of his

  561. good treasure

  562. brings forth

  563. good,

  564. and the evil

  565. person out

  566. of his

  567. evil treasure

  568. brings forth

  569. evil.

  570. I tell

  571. you,

  572. on the

  573. day of

  574. judgment,

  575. people will

  576. give account

  577. for every

  578. careless word

  579. they speak.

  580. For by

  581. your words

  582. you will

  583. be justified,

  584. and by

  585. your words

  586. you will

  587. be condemned.

  588. So Jesus

  589. is reminding

  590. them there

  591. of the

  592. reality of

  593. judgment,

  594. that he

  595. is going

  596. to come

  597. back to

  598. this world

  599. to return

  600. for his

  601. people and

  602. his church.

  603. And at

  604. that time,

  605. no matter

  606. what has

  607. been secret,

  608. all things

  609. will be

  610. revealed,

  611. and everyone

  612. will answer

  613. for their

  614. speech.

  615. And so it

  616. underscores for

  617. us here the

  618. importance,

  619. the urgency

  620. of faith

  621. in Jesus

  622. Christ,

  623. right?

  624. Because that

  625. is our one

  626. and only hope.

  627. All of us,

  628. if we examine

  629. our words,

  630. would have

  631. words that we

  632. don't want

  633. repeated.

  634. We might

  635. have text

  636. messages we

  637. don't want

  638. published,

  639. emails we

  640. don't want

  641. distributed.

  642. And yet,

  643. those are

  644. the things

  645. that if

  646. we are

  647. apart from

  648. Jesus Christ,

  649. we will

  650. stand before

  651. God one

  652. day and

  653. face his

  654. judgment.

  655. That day

  656. could be

  657. many days

  658. in the

  659. future.

  660. That day

  661. could be

  662. today.

  663. And so

  664. there's a

  665. tremendous

  666. urgency for

  667. us to

  668. embrace the

  669. offer of

  670. forgiveness that

  671. God offers

  672. to us through

  673. Jesus Christ.

  674. This should

  675. cause us

  676. tremendous

  677. fear.

  678. And yet,

  679. we also

  680. learn from

  681. these passages

  682. we need

  683. much more

  684. than just

  685. fear,

  686. right?

  687. You'll

  688. remember from

  689. Proverbs

    Proverbs 2 chapter mention

  690. chapter 2

  691. that we

  692. can only

  693. be protected

  694. by wisdom

  695. if we

  696. love wisdom.

  697. We can

  698. only be

  699. protected by

  700. wisdom if

  701. we love

  702. wisdom.

  703. In other

  704. words,

  705. fear is

  706. not enough.

  707. It's not

  708. that we

  709. need more

  710. fear,

  711. but that fear

  712. is driving

  713. us to what

  714. we actually

  715. need.

  716. We need

  717. a greater

  718. love.

  719. And that's

  720. what Jesus

  721. and the

  722. Proverbs,

  723. as wisdom

  724. teachers,

  725. both tell

  726. us.

  727. Here in

  728. this passage,

  729. we see

  730. that it's

  731. the heart

  732. that matters.

  733. Verse 14,

  734. it's a

  735. perverted

  736. heart that

  737. devises

  738. evil.

  739. And so

  740. it's verse

  741. 18 as well.

  742. It's a

  743. heart that

  744. devises wicked

  745. plans.

  746. And so

  747. fear ultimately

  748. isn't going to

  749. help us or

  750. save us.

  751. It's the

  752. heart that's

  753. the problem

  754. for this

  755. worthless man.

  756. And Jesus

  757. tells us

  758. the same

  759. thing in

  760. Matthew

    Matthew 12 chapter mention

  761. chapter 12,

  762. what I

  763. just read.

  764. Out of the

  765. abundance of

  766. the what?

  767. The heart,

  768. the mouth

  769. speaks.

  770. So it's out

  771. of the

  772. goodness of

  773. the heart

  774. that the

  775. good man

  776. brings out

  777. good treasure.

  778. In other

  779. words,

  780. the mouth

  781. is not

  782. the cause.

  783. The mouth

  784. is the

  785. symptom.

  786. It's not

  787. that we

  788. need new

  789. mouths.

  790. It's that

  791. we need

  792. new hearts.

  793. it's not

  794. that we

  795. need new

  796. mouths,

  797. but that we

  798. need new

  799. hearts.

  800. And of

  801. course,

  802. when we

  803. come up

  804. against that,

  805. we realize

  806. our

  807. powerlessness,

  808. right?

  809. Jesus is

  810. the only

  811. way to

  812. change

  813. hearts.

  814. Jesus is

  815. the only

  816. one who

  817. can transform

  818. evil treasure

  819. to good

  820. treasure.

  821. We have

  822. to obey,

  823. right?

  824. There's a

  825. call to

  826. obedience here

  827. in Proverbs.

  828. We cannot

  829. obey unless

  830. we're

  831. transformed.

  832. We have

  833. to obey.

  834. There's a

  835. call to

  836. obedience

  837. here.

  838. We cannot

  839. obey unless

  840. we're

  841. transformed.

  842. The basic

  843. logic of

  844. the gospel

  845. is this.

  846. I know

  847. that I

  848. must

  849. change.

  850. I know

  851. that my

  852. words must

  853. be different.

  854. And I

  855. cannot

  856. change

  857. myself.

  858. Logic of

  859. the gospel

  860. is this.

  861. I know

  862. that I

  863. must

  864. change.

  865. I cannot

  866. change

  867. myself.

  868. And so

  869. it's a

  870. greater

  871. power that

  872. has to

  873. change our

  874. hearts.

  875. It has

  876. to be

  877. the

  878. power that

  879. comes through

  880. Jesus Christ

  881. as he

  882. offers us

  883. peace and

  884. reconciliation

  885. with him.

  886. We are

  887. able to

  888. live at

  889. peace with

  890. others.

  891. As he

  892. changes our

  893. hearts by

  894. his Holy

  895. Spirit,

  896. we are

  897. able to

  898. then bring

  899. forth good

  900. treasure.

  901. It's that

  902. that transforms

  903. us and

  904. motivates us.

  905. Remember,

  906. it's not

  907. just that we

  908. want to

  909. avoid the

  910. floor of

  911. the law.

  912. It's not

  913. just that

  914. we're not

  915. lying.

  916. We're

  917. looking to

  918. head for

  919. the ceiling,

  920. to head for

  921. the stars.

  922. We're

  923. promoting

  924. goodness and

  925. truth.

  926. And so to

  927. do that,

  928. we have to

  929. look to

  930. Jesus who

  931. transforms and

  932. changes our

  933. hearts.

  934. We look to

  935. Jesus and we

  936. realize he

  937. doesn't repeat

  938. our sins,

  939. right?

  940. He removes

  941. them as far as

  942. the east is

  943. from the west.

  944. love.

  945. And so we

  946. don't have to

  947. repeat other

  948. people's sins.

  949. Love covers

  950. over a multitude

  951. of sins.

  952. Jesus' love has

  953. covered over our

  954. sins.

  955. We're able to

  956. cover over other

  957. people's sins.

  958. Our acceptance

  959. is not based on

  960. our performance.

  961. acceptance.

  962. And so we

  963. don't have to

  964. tear other

  965. people down.

  966. We don't have to

  967. destroy the

  968. community in

  969. order to be

  970. accepted.

  971. We don't have to

  972. convince other

  973. people that

  974. there's someone

  975. who performs

  976. worse than

  977. us in order

  978. to belong.

  979. God, in

  980. Jesus Christ,

  981. promises to

  982. never leave

  983. us or forsake

  984. us.

  985. And because of

  986. that, we can

  987. trust him

  988. rather than

  989. destroying other

  990. people in order

  991. to get ahead.

  992. Jesus is the

  993. one who gives

  994. us greater

  995. promises and

  996. greater provision.

  997. He is the

  998. one who actually

  999. gives us the

  1000. power and the

  1001. ability to

  1002. have not evil

  1003. words but good

  1004. words.

  1005. He's the one who

  1006. transforms our

  1007. heart from

  1008. hearts of stone

  1009. to hearts of

  1010. flesh.

  1011. God has

  1012. restored his

  1013. relationship with

  1014. us.

  1015. And so we're

  1016. able to risk

  1017. hard conversations

  1018. with other

  1019. people knowing

  1020. that if we

  1021. lose our

  1022. relationships with

  1023. them, we

  1024. still have our

  1025. relationship with

  1026. God.

  1027. We don't have

  1028. to fear the

  1029. nakedness that

  1030. will come from

  1031. having every

  1032. word exposed

  1033. because Jesus

  1034. has already been

  1035. exposed for us.

  1036. and so we

  1037. don't have to

  1038. live in fear or

  1039. be motivated by

  1040. fear.

  1041. Instead, we are

  1042. motivated and

  1043. transformed and

  1044. propelled by

  1045. Jesus and his

  1046. work on our

  1047. behalf.

  1048. He is the one

  1049. who empowers us

  1050. and enables us

  1051. to do what the

  1052. ninth commandment

  1053. points us to,

  1054. to speak words

  1055. that are good and

  1056. loving rather than

  1057. words that are bad

  1058. and tear down.

  1059. That is the

  1060. power that God

  1061. gives us.

  1062. He empowers us to

  1063. speak good and

  1064. uplifting words.

  1065. Proverbs chapter 15

    Proverbs 15 chapter mention

  1066. says this, to make

1067. an apt answer is a

  1068. joy to a man and a

  1069. word in season how

  1070. good it is.

  1071. Of course, we want

  1072. to be those kinds

  1073. of people, right?

  1074. Word in season kind

  1075. of people.

  1076. People whose words

  1077. lift other people up

  1078. and build them up,

  1079. who encourage them

  1080. and sustain them.

  1081. In her book,

  1082. Pride and Prejudice,

  1083. we are told about

  1084. two different

  1085. characters who have

  1086. different relationships

  1087. with their words.

  1088. We have Wickham,

  1089. right?

  1090. Wickham's a man who

  1091. appears to be very

  1092. gracious in his words.

  1093. He wins people over

  1094. very quickly.

  1095. He tells them what

  1096. they want to hear.

  1097. His manners are

  1098. wonderful.

  1099. And yet it actually

1100. turns out that he is

  1101. someone who winks

  1102. with his eyes,

  1103. signals with his feet,

  1104. and points with his

  1105. finger, right?

  1106. He openly slanders

  1107. Mr. Darcy.

  1108. He's not just saying

  1109. things that are

  1110. partially true.

  1111. He's saying things

  1112. that aren't true.

  1113. He's twisting the

  1114. truth.

  1115. He's destroying him

  1116. as part of the

  1117. community.

  1118. And he stabs him

  1119. in the back.

  1120. Why is he doing

  1121. that?

  1122. Well, he's devouring

  1123. people, right?

  1124. He's looking to gain

  1125. something, to earn

  1126. something.

  1127. He's taking advantage

  1128. of young women who

  1129. are too naive to

  1130. stay far away from

  1131. him.

  1132. He's looking to get

  1133. the money that he

  1134. needs to pay off

  1135. his debts.

  1136. He is stirring up,

  1137. he's creating

  1138. discord, enmity

  1139. between brothers.

  1140. Mr. Darcy, on the

  1141. other hand, now he

  1142. gets some flack,

  1143. right, for his words

  1144. at the beginning.

  1145. He says some things

  1146. about Elizabeth that

  1147. are unflattering.

  1148. And yet, ultimately,

  1149. he's someone who

  1150. uses his words to

  1151. build up the

  1152. community rather

  1153. than tear it down.

  1154. He does not go

  1155. around sharing the

  1156. truth about

  1157. Wickham.

  1158. He does in a

  1159. letter, right,

  1160. ultimately to defend

  1161. himself against the

  1162. slander.

  1163. But he's not going

  1164. around trying to

  1165. destroy.

  1166. Instead, he's

  1167. protecting.

  1168. There's many things

  1169. he could share that

  1170. are 100% true that

  1171. he doesn't.

  1172. And it continues to

  1173. the end.

  1174. We learn, of course,

  1175. that he ends up

  1176. coming out and

  1177. protecting the

  1178. community, not just

  1179. in his words, but

  1180. in his actions.

  1181. He saves the day

1182. out of his love for

  1183. the community, and

  1184. he pays off Wickham's

  1185. debts so that Wickham

  1186. will marry Lydia

  1187. because he's willing

  1188. to sacrifice, he's

  1189. willing to lose,

  1190. right, to love this

  1191. community and protect

  1192. the honor of this

  1193. family.

  1194. He covers up, he

  1195. lets love cover a

  1196. multitude of sins

  1197. rather than going

  1198. out and revealing it

  1199. and disgracing people.

  1200. He does not

  1201. advertise that he's

  1202. done this, and he

1203. doesn't do it out of

  1204. fear, right, but out

  1205. of love.

1206. He does it because he

  1207. loves the community,

  1208. and most importantly,

  1209. he loves Elizabeth.

  1210. Wickham, on the other

  1211. hand, escapes for a

  1212. time.

  1213. He does not escape

  1214. forever.

  1215. He faces the

  1216. consequences of his

  1217. words.

  1218. Ultimately, everything

  1219. that is secret is

  1220. made public.

  1221. And so, brothers and

  1222. sisters, God warns us

1223. of the danger of our

  1224. words.

1225. We can burn down our

  1226. communities.

1227. God also points us to

  1228. something better.

1229. He points us to words

  1230. of love.

1231. words of love that come

1232. to us and through us

  1233. because of Jesus' love

  1234. for us first.

1235. And so, he points us to

1236. our need for a new

  1237. heart, and he provides

  1238. that new heart through

1239. Jesus so we can express

1240. our love for others and

1241. the community in the way

1242. that Jesus has given it

  1243. to us.

1244. And so, that is our hope

  1245. and our confidence.

1246. And we can say, the good

  1247. person out of good

  1248. treasure brings forth

  1249. good, but the evil

1250. person out of his evil

  1251. treasure brings forth

  1252. evil.

1253. I invite you to pray with

  1254. me.

1255. Our Father in heaven, we

1256. thank you that you don't

1257. just warn us of judgment,

1258. you don't just present us

1259. with the fear that we need,

1260. but you also give us the

  1261. escape and the provision

1262. that we need in Jesus

  1263. Christ.

  1264. You transform our hearts,

1265. you give us new hearts,

1266. you cover over our sins

1267. and forgive them, and you

1268. build up and give us a

1269. community to be a part of.

1270. We thank you that we don't

1271. have to earn these things

1272. or deserve them, but that

1273. you give them to us through
