  1. Good morning. It's good to be with you all together as one community and we have a lot to cover this morning so I'm just going to jump right in.

  2. We are continuing our series in the book of Proverbs. You'll remember that Proverbs is a book about wisdom and wisdom is skill in the art of living.

  3. Wisdom begins its foundation is the fear of the Lord and it continues. It grows with humility. We can't expect to grow in wisdom, to have wisdom, unless we're willing to admit we don't know everything.

  4. And so this morning we're going to be in Proverbs chapter 6 starting at verse 20. I invite you to turn there now and as we come to this portion, section of Proverbs, we're going to again be talking about the topic of sex.

    Proverbs 6 chapter mention

  5. And so I'm going to repeat virtually the same things I said at the beginning of my sermon last time when we talked about Proverbs chapter 5 at the beginning of July.

    Proverbs 5 chapter mention

  6. First of all, when we come to topics that are hard and sensitive, it's important to note that we're going to say something, but not everything.

  7. There's too much to be said in one sermon and so we trust that as we come to God's word over and over again, we'll receive the full orbed view of what he has to say about a variety of topics.

  8. Second, we're going to come again across this issue of the woman playing the role of the temptress.

  9. That's what we're going to see in chapter 7 and so it's important again to ask the question, why is it the woman and not the man?

  10. And I believe it's because it's a genre issue. So this is a book that's written to a young man and so it makes sense that he's being warned about a young woman.

  11. And if instead this were a book written by a mother to her daughter, we would expect the mother to warn her daughter about the man who is a tempter or a seducer.

  12. So it's important to say that because we need to speak clearly in this issue because often women's sexuality is spoken of in the church that in a way that's harmful, sometimes very toxic.

  13. And so we just want to say up front, both men and women tempt people sexually. Both men and women are tempted. Both men and women desire and enjoy sex. Both men and women struggle with sexual integrity.

  14. So we don't paint these things as a man's issue or a woman's issue. This is a human issue because God's made all of us as sexual beings.

  15. It's also important to note as we come to topics like this, it can be something that bring up memories for some of us, either of sinning or being sinned against.

  16. And so it's important to remember as those things happen that God's with us and that his forgiveness is real.

  17. But those things don't prevent us from looking at the entire counsel of his word, everything that God has to say to us.

  18. God speaks about these things, and so we are unashamed to speak about them as well.

  19. Now, last time when we talked about this, we were in Proverbs chapter 5, and there's some overlap between Proverbs chapter 5 and Proverbs chapter 7.

Proverbs 5 chapter mention Proverbs 5 chapter mention Proverbs 7 chapter mention

  20. But the main emphasis of Proverbs chapter 5 was this, flee sexual sin and do it by running towards your spouse, right?

    Proverbs 5 chapter mention

  21. Have a lot of sex with your spouse.

  22. That is one strategy the Proverbs present to us against sexual temptation.

  23. We're going to see a different strategy this morning from chapters 6 and 7.

  24. It's not run towards your spouse, but run away from sin.

  25. Not run towards your spouse, not have a lot of really good sex with your spouse, but run away from sexual sin.

  26. Now, there's going to be a lot in this passage, right?

  27. We're covering all of chapter 7, part of chapter 6.

  28. There's going to be portions of it that reteach what was taught in chapter 5.

  29. And so we're not going to cover everything equally this morning.

  30. We're going to have a focus, and that focus will be from chapter 7, verse 25.

  31. Let not your heart turn aside to her ways.

  32. Do not stray into her paths.

  33. So we won't treat everything equally this morning, but we'll have a special focus on that because that's the primary focus of this passage.

  34. With that, I invite you again to turn either in your worship guide or in your Bible or in your phone to this portion of God's Word.

  35. We are in Proverbs chapter 6, starting at verse 20.

    Proverbs 6 chapter mention

  36. And as we turn to this, remember that this is God's Word.

  37. And God tells us in Proverbs chapter 30, verse 5, that every word of God proves true.

    Proverbs 30:5

  38. He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.

  39. And so that's why we start now reading at verse 20.

  40. Verse 27.

  41. Chapter 7.

  42. Verse 6.

  43. Verse 10.

  44. Verse 27.

  45. Verse 21.

  46. Verse 21.

  47. Verse 21.

  48. Verse 21.

  49. Verse 21.

  50. Verse 21.

  51. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's Word.

  52. And есть luigi comment we ask of trueordo affine the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

  53. and you would challenge us.

  54. We ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

  55. Amen.

  56. You may remember when we were back in Proverbs chapter 5,

    Proverbs 5 chapter mention

  57. there was one small comment that the father made to the son

  58. as he was telling him to pursue his wife,

  59. and it came in verse 8, and it was this,

  60. keep your way far from her,

  61. and do not go near the door of her house.

  62. So there's this woman out there right from chapter 5

  63. that's trying to tempt you.

  64. Stay as far away as you can.

  65. Now that was a side comment in chapter 5.

  66. It is now the main focus of chapters 6 and 7.

  67. The father is not satisfied that he's just given that warning.

  68. He's now going to tell a long story

  69. so his son can understand why that is so necessary,

  70. why it's imperative that he stays away.

  71. And that's the story that we're told in chapter 7.

  72. Starting at verse 6, this father's looking out on the streets,

  73. and he sees this simple person, this young man,

  74. who has not heeded the father's command to stay far away.

  75. It seems it should be implied right by the fact

  76. that he's told to stay away that people know where this house is.

  77. They know the places of temptation.

  78. They know where this woman is lying in wait.

  79. And yet this person is foolish.

  80. I don't know if they're doing this intentionally or unintentionally,

  81. but either way, this foolish person is not being careful

  82. about the way he's walking.

  83. And so he is very close.

  84. He puts himself, just by his very position, in danger.

  85. And then we get to see that there's a process here.

  86. There's a pattern to sin, so it doesn't happen all at once.

  87. It starts with him being in the wrong place,

  88. and then it continues by this woman coming out to seduce him.

  89. First of all, he's there at the wrong time, right?

  90. Verse 9, he's there in the evening.

  91. We might wonder why he's wandering around at night.

  92. And then in verse 10, this woman comes out,

  93. and she has a variety of strategies.

  94. Verse 13, she kisses him.

  95. Verse 14, she helps him understand that what's going on here

  96. because of her religious activities

  97. is at a time where she has a wonderful meal

  98. that she's prepared for him.

  99. That's part of what we're supposed to take away

  100. from the fact that she's performed her sacrifices.

  101. In addition to that, she has created a space

  102. that's welcoming and inviting.

  103. Verse 16, her couch has coverings on it.

  104. She's perfumed her bed.

  105. Verse 17, and not only is there this wonderful experience

  106. that she's offering out to this man,

  107. she's appealing to a variety of senses.

  108. She's also appealing to his desire for secrecy.

  109. Look, you can enjoy this,

  110. and no one will find out.

  111. No one will know.

  112. Verse 19, my husband is not at home.

  113. He has gone on a long journey.

  114. He won't be back for a long time.

  115. And so she uses her dress to attract him.

  116. She's physically attractive.

  117. And of course, she uses her words to attract him.

  118. It's interesting that the Proverbs

  119. put such a highlight on the words of this woman,

  120. both in five and in seven.

  121. She is saying things that this man wants to hear.

  122. It's not just a physical relationship.

  123. There are needs, perhaps, that he feels and has that are unmet,

  124. and she is willing to meet them.

  125. And so we see several principles here

  126. that we have seen before,

  127. that when it comes to the foolish person

  128. and the simple person.

  129. First, the simple person,

  130. as I've told you over and over again,

  131. does not understand the relationship

  132. between present actions and future consequences.

  133. The simple person cannot connect the dots on those things.

  134. And so that's part of what makes him simple.

  135. He can't connect the dots

  136. that being at the wrong place at the wrong time

  137. is going to make him vulnerable to this sin.

  138. He doesn't have any strategy.

  139. Now, maybe he didn't have any bad intentions in this.

  140. Maybe he's just failing to guard himself.

  141. Maybe he knows where he's going.

  142. Either way, that's part of what makes him simple.

  143. He has no strategy in life.

  144. He can't connect how all his actions come together.

  145. Remember, this is what we saw in chapter one, verse 22.

  146. Wisdom cries out and says to the simple person,

  147. how long, oh simple one,

  148. will you love your simple ways?

  149. There's something that the simple person

  150. gets out of their simpleness.

  151. They don't have to do the hard work

  152. of being careful.

  153. But then there's another principle here

  154. that comes to us again from chapter one,

  155. and that's about the fear of the Lord.

  156. It's not just that this simple person

  157. doesn't understand the danger

  158. that he's putting himself in.

  159. It's that this simple person

  160. doesn't have the fear of the Lord.

  161. You'll remember at the beginning of chapter one,

  162. our very first sermon on Proverbs,

  163. I gave you a list of the kinds of things

  164. that characterize someone

  165. who has the fear of the Lord.

  166. One of them is,

  167. this person's goal is to stay far away from sin.

  168. The goal of the person who fears the Lord

  169. is to stay far away from sin.

  170. That's something they're working for.

  171. And so someone who fears the Lord

  172. does not play the game

  173. where they try to get as close to sin as they can

  174. without crossing the line.

  175. Because remember,

  176. the person who fears the Lord loves wisdom.

  177. And so they love what's right.

  178. They want to stay as close to it as possible

  179. because of their love for God

  180. and their knowledge of God's discipline.

  181. That's part of what it means to fear the Lord.

  182. And so this man,

  183. this foolish young man,

  184. this simple man,

  185. he's simple,

  186. so he can't connect the dots.

  187. He's simple,

  188. so he doesn't fear the Lord.

  189. He's not trying and working

  190. to stay away from sin.

  191. If we are trying to get as close as possible to sin

  192. without getting burned,

  193. we don't actually love wisdom.

  194. We're only perhaps afraid

  195. of the consequences of sin.

  196. We don't hate sin for its own sake.

  197. We don't love sin for its own sake.

  198. Wisdom is at most an inconvenience, right?

  199. Maybe the simple person's afraid of consequences,

  200. but the simple person doesn't love wisdom enough

  201. to pursue it and hold firmly to it.

  202. You might think about it like this way.

  203. The foolish person

  204. is the kind of person who knows

  205. there's something, right,

  206. they shouldn't buy.

  207. Maybe it's something that's wrong for them to purchase.

  208. Maybe it's something that's not wrong.

  209. They just can't afford it.

  210. They know it's outside of their budget.

  211. It would be foolish to do it.

  212. And this is the person who goes to the store

  213. where that thing is sold

  214. and they press their nose up against the glass.

  215. They don't stay far away.

  216. They hover around sin.

  217. They know they're not supposed to do it,

  218. yet they dance around it.

  219. They're looking at it.

  220. They're thinking about it.

  221. That's what the simple person is doing here.

  222. As the wise person, right, would stay away.

  223. They would not be in parts of town where that store is.

  224. They wouldn't walk by and look in.

  225. If they had to walk by it,

  226. they'd stay far away

  227. because they know that's a temptation for them.

  228. And that's what the wise person does.

  229. So we've got the principle of the simple person,

  230. the principle of the fear of the Lord.

  231. And then we also see again

  232. the principle that we saw in 1 Peter,

  233. which is that our sexuality,

  234. sexual sin has this gravitational pull to it.

  235. Remember I told you that story

  236. about the man who was a terrorist

  237. who went to bomb an adult theater

  238. and he was so drawn in by the images on the screen

  239. that he forgot there was a bomb underneath him.

  240. He blew his legs off.

  241. Why?

  242. Because there's this gravitational pull to sexual sin.

  243. It has a special power and a temptation to it.

  244. And so this young man underestimates, right,

  245. the power that this is going to have over him.

  246. He has both put himself in the wrong place

  247. and he's put himself in a specially vulnerable place.

  248. And so those are a few of the things

  249. that this highlights for us.

  250. The principle of being simple,

  251. the principle of fearing the Lord,

  252. and the principle of the serious attraction

  253. of sexual sin.

  254. There's a few minor notes here

  255. that I'll highlight as well

  256. that we covered in chapter five,

  257. so I won't go over them in detail.

  258. But this chapter again outlines for us

  259. the serious consequences of sexual sin.

  260. It talks again about the fact

  261. that it can lead to death.

  262. Remember we covered that in chapter five.

  263. It also highlights another principle for us

  264. under the consequences.

  265. If you look at chapter six, verse 26,

  266. we are told that adultery

  267. is an especially damaging form of sexual sin.

  268. So Solomon's not saying here adultery is wrong,

  269. but other kinds of sexual sin are okay.

  270. He's saying adultery is especially damaging.

  271. We might have put it this way.

  272. It is wrong to look at pornography.

  273. It is damaging.

  274. It is even more damaging

  275. to have a sexual relationship

  276. with someone who's married.

  277. And so that's again part of what's being put out here.

  278. There are repercussions

  279. that can carry across generations.

  280. It's not like cheating on your taxes.

  281. You can repent, right?

  282. And you just go back and refile.

  283. Sexual sin's not like that.

  284. You can't go back and undo it.

  285. There are things that you cannot walk back.

  286. That's part of what we see in verse 33 of chapter six.

  287. He will get wounds and dishonor

  288. and his disgrace will not be wiped away.

  289. That's not to say that Jesus doesn't offer real grace

  290. and real forgiveness for sexual sin,

  291. but it is to highlight

  292. that even in the midst of our repentance,

  293. there are consequences

  294. that we may have to walk with

  295. for the rest of our lives.

  296. And so that's why Solomon cares so much

  297. about warning his son here.

  298. As we think about this passage for us,

  299. there are still houses

  300. that we need to stay away from.

  301. It may not be a physical house.

  302. You may not have someone in your neighborhood

  303. who's standing on the corner

  304. trying to tempt you,

  305. but there are places

  306. where sexual experiences are offered.

  307. There are relationships

  308. and people who offer these things.

  309. Some of you have had that experience.

  310. You know when someone's giving you the eyes, right?

  311. And those eyes say this,

  312. I wonder what it would be like

  313. if you were my husband

  314. instead of my current husband.

  315. I wonder what it would be like

  316. if you were my wife

  317. rather than my current wife.

  318. You can see that sometimes, right?

  319. In the way that someone interacts with you,

  320. in the way that they look at you.

  321. Stay away from that person.

  322. It could be flattering, right?

  323. That someone's thinking of you in that way.

  324. Don't be like the simple person.

  325. Don't be flattered by that.

  326. Be scared by that.

  327. Move away.

  328. Have boundaries, right?

  329. You may be someone

  330. who needs to be relocated in your job.

  331. You may need someone

  332. who needs to change

  333. some of the things about your life

  334. so your contact with that person is less.

  335. Of course, it's not just people

  336. and relationships.

  337. I will highlight this.

  338. So there's relationships, right?

  339. We have to know our temptations.

  340. There was a lot of talk

  341. a couple years ago

  342. about the Billy Graham rule

  343. where Billy Graham would resolve

  344. never to be alone

  345. with someone of the opposite sex

  346. and then Vice President Mike Pence

  347. took that rule upon himself

  348. and our culture did what?

  349. They mocked him for it.

  350. They mocked him

  351. for seeking sexual integrity.

  352. Now, I'm not telling you

  353. that you need to adopt

  354. the Billy Graham rule

  355. or the Mike Pence rule.

  356. They were not just staying away

  357. from the foreign woman,

  358. they were staying away

  359. from every woman.

  360. So I'm not binding

  361. your conscience with that.

  362. I'm just saying

  363. that's one application

  364. that those men took.

  365. Now, they're in a different position

  366. than many of us are.

  367. They're public figures.

  368. So they're at especially great risk

  369. for being sabotaged

  370. in some way for scandal.

  371. But this is someone

  372. who in their particular situation

  373. is finding a way

  374. to apply that

  375. in their relationship.

  376. So whether we agree

  377. with that rule,

  378. whether we apply it

  379. to ourselves or not,

  380. we can look at that

  381. and say there's someone

  382. who's trying to stay

  383. far away from her house.

  384. There's someone

  385. who is making

  386. sexual integrity a priority.

  387. There's someone

  388. who, unlike the simple person,

  389. is actively staying away

  390. from sexual temptation.

  391. Of course,

  392. it's not just relationships, right?

  393. We live in a culture

  394. where there are movies

  395. and TV shows

  396. that present us

  397. with things

  398. that are not helpful

  399. for our hearts

  400. and our minds.

  401. Now, I'm not here

  402. to tell you

  403. which shows you should

  404. and should not watch.

  405. And each of us

  406. has to know

  407. our own temptations, right?

  408. For some of us,

  409. there's things

  410. that we watch

  411. that are going to take us

  412. in places in our minds

  413. we should not be.

  414. There's others of us,

  415. those things won't take us

  416. to that place.

  417. So for different people,

  418. that line's going to be

  419. in a different place.

  420. But what we don't do

  421. is we don't take

  422. the assumption

  423. of our culture

  424. and say,

  425. well, you know,

  426. it's a drama,

  427. it's a documentary,

  428. it's not pornography

  429. so I can watch

  430. whatever I want, right?

  431. We know

  432. that that's another house

  433. sometimes we need

  434. to stay away from.

  435. And so we don't just

  436. consume the content

  437. that our culture gives us

  438. without thinking about it,

  439. without discernment.

  440. We are careful

  441. where we park

  442. our sexuality.

  443. I read to you

  444. an excerpt last time

  445. from this book,

  446. Why Does God Care

  447. Who I Sleep With?

  448. And he compares

  449. our sexuality

  450. to a car,

  451. that they're beater cars,

  452. right?

  453. We don't care

  454. what we do with them.

  455. And then he tells

  456. the story of someone

  457. loaned him a convertible

  458. that didn't have

  459. a single scratch on it.

  460. You better believe

  461. he was careful

  462. with that car

  463. because the car

  464. was valuable.

  465. He makes the same point

  466. about our sexuality.

  467. We are careful

  468. about where we park it

  469. because God

  470. values it so much.

  471. It has so much worth.

  472. And so we value it

  473. as well.

  474. And so when it comes

  475. to the people we're with

  476. and the things we watch,

  477. we are careful

  478. where we park ourselves.

  479. We're careful

  480. where we place ourselves.

  481. Now it's not just people.

  482. It's not just entertainment.

  483. Of course,

  484. one of the greatest corners,

  485. one of the greatest houses

  486. that we need to be careful

  487. about in our culture

  488. is what's happening

  489. on the internet.

  490. What we're doing

  491. when we're on our phones

  492. or our computers.

  493. Maybe staying far away

  494. for you

  495. means that you need

  496. a filter

  497. on your phone

  498. and your computer.

  499. Maybe it means you need

  500. an accountability software.

  501. I know many people

  502. and I do this myself

  503. who use a software

  504. called Covenant Eyes

  505. which they put on their phones

  506. and their computers

  507. and it monitors

  508. every single website

  509. that they go to.

  510. And then it filters through them

  511. and it emails

  512. a variety of people

  513. that you've chosen

  514. as accountability partners

  515. any website

  516. that you've visited

  517. that's questionable.

  518. And so it's a way

  519. to stay away

  520. from that house, right?

  521. You know

  522. that you are not

  523. anonymous.

  524. You're not able

  525. to believe the lie

  526. that this woman

  527. offers to this man, right?

  528. This is going to be secret.

  529. Chapter 7

  530. verses 19 and 20.

  531. And so for many of us

  532. maybe for most of us

  533. we don't want to

  534. accidentally stumble

  535. into the wrong part of town.

  536. That means being proactive

  537. about what's happening to us

  538. when we're on the internet.

  539. There are all sorts of things

  540. on the internet

  541. that are wonderful

  542. and all sorts of things

  543. that are terrible

  544. and damaging.

  545. So we want to present

  546. prevent ourselves

  547. from accidentally stumbling

  548. into those areas.

  549. Remember the fool here.

  550. We don't know

  551. if this was intentional, right?

  552. He's just on a walk.

  553. He may not have been

  554. seeking this woman out.

  555. The problem is that

  556. he wasn't proactive

  557. in staying away from her.

  558. Regardless of his intention

  559. he was not on guard.

  560. He did not realize

  561. the fact that he was in a war.

  562. That when we're against

  563. sexual sin

  564. we have to have strategies.

  565. We have to go in

  566. with a plan.

  567. That's what the wise person does.

  568. We are in a war

  569. against sexual sin.

  570. That's what the fool

  571. is unwilling to admit.

  572. That's why he finds himself

  573. at the wrong place

  574. at the wrong time.

  575. I want you to think about

  576. when we think about the internet

  577. think about it like this.

  578. About

  579. over a decade ago

  580. I was in New Orleans.

  581. And if you've ever visited

  582. New Orleans

  583. you know that it's

  584. it's a mixed bag, right?

  585. There are wonderful things there.

  586. There's wonderful music

  587. and musicians.

  588. There is wonderful food.

  589. There are wonderful

  590. cultural events.

  591. And also

  592. you could turn the corner

  593. and suddenly

  594. without warning

  595. find yourself

  596. in the red light district.

  597. No warning, right?

  598. You could be walking around

  599. walking into a jazz club

  600. or a jazz bar

  601. and you look

  602. and you realize

  603. oh

  604. that's a prostitute.

  605. That's the same way

  606. the internet works.

  607. There are many

  608. wonderful things about it.

  609. And

  610. if we are not on guard

  611. we're wandering around

  612. right

  613. without even trying to

  614. we stumble into things

  615. and think

  616. oh wait

  617. I'm in the red district now.

  618. oh that's something

  619. I shouldn't be looking at

  620. even without

  621. in our culture

  622. seeking it out.

  623. And so we make sure

  624. we stay away

  625. from her house.

  626. We make sure

  627. we stay far away

  628. from the places

  629. of temptation.

  630. We have a strategy.

  631. We have a game plan.

  632. We know where

  633. the enemy is, right?

  634. We are in a war

  635. against sexual sin

  636. and so we don't

  637. just wander around.

  638. We want to make sure

  639. we have the high ground.

  640. If you're in a battle

  641. you're not just going

  642. to wander down

  643. into a valley

  644. without thinking about it.

  645. You want to know

  646. who's on either side

  647. and what they're going

  648. to do.

  649. The same is true

  650. of our battle

  651. against sexual sin.

  652. We know

  653. where we are

  654. and we're on guard

  655. against it.

  656. That's what the wise

  657. person does.

  658. He knows the territory.

  659. He knows where

  660. the dangers are.

  661. He stays far away

  662. from it.

  663. The other thing

  664. that's interesting

  665. about this foolish

  666. young man

  667. not just is he

  668. in the wrong place

  669. at the wrong time

  670. why is he wandering

  671. around late at night?

  672. Now there could be

  673. a variety of reasons

  674. he's wandering around

  675. late at night.

  676. I'll suggest one to you.

  677. Since he's a simple person

  678. he's probably not an ant.

  679. It's one thing

  680. to stay away

  681. from sexual sin

  682. but why is he wandering around?

  683. This man probably

  684. has too much time

  685. on his hands.

  686. He's not pursuing

  687. the things he needs

  688. to pursue.

  689. He's not working hard

  690. for the things

  691. he needs to work hard for.

  692. So of course

  693. he's open up

  694. to these temptations.

  695. Of course

  696. there are these

  697. opportunities for him.

  698. My last semester

  699. in seminary

  700. I took this class

  701. with a professor

  702. on preparing

  703. for pastoral ministry

  704. and he never gave

  705. our final papers back.

  706. I shouldn't say

  707. he never.

  708. He did not return them.

  709. And then we all graduated

  710. and went to various places.

  711. And he finally decided

  712. I don't remember

  713. how long it was

  714. after

  715. it wasn't quite a year

  716. but the next winter

  717. he finally sent

  718. our papers to us.

  719. And because he was

  720. sending them through the mail

  721. he wrote us all this letter.

  722. And I still have it.

  723. He wrote us this long letter

  724. and a lot of it

  725. was a discussion

  726. about sexual sin.

  727. Writing it to

  728. a majority of men,

  729. young men

  730. coming out of seminary.

  731. And he says this.

  732. It is not possible

  733. simply to deal with sin

  734. in your own heart and life

  735. and by this alone

  736. to become a changed person.

  737. More than anything else

  738. sinful patterns

  739. have to be replaced

  740. with patterns of obedience,

  741. habits of love

  742. and acts of serving

  743. and caring for others.

  744. This is true

  745. with all sins

  746. including the sins

  747. of the many of you

  748. who struggle

  749. with your sexuality.

  750. You have

  751. too much time alone,

  752. too much time

  753. thinking about yourself,

  754. too much time

  755. on the computer

  756. exploring the internet,

  757. too much time

  758. thinking about

  759. your own sexuality

  760. and too much time

  761. finding ways

  762. to serve

  763. your own sexual fulfillment.

  764. your lives

  765. need to become

  766. much more engaged

  767. in living for other people,

  768. most of all

  769. in living for your wives

  770. and children

  771. or husbands and children

  772. for those of you

  773. who are married,

  774. but also in a life

  775. of serving others.

  776. And if you are single,

  777. just get deeply involved

  778. in some truly demanding

  779. relationships

  780. in a ministry

  781. that uses your mind,

  782. heart,

  783. imagination,

  784. soul,

  785. and strength.

  786. You simply

  787. will not have

  788. so much time

  789. or so much energy

  790. and your mind

  791. and heart

  792. will become full

  793. of your concern

  794. for other people

  795. rather than merely

  796. the needs of yourself.

  797. You will develop

  798. genuine battle faith

  799. and an embattled life

  800. because you will become

  801. full of concern,

  802. compassion,

  803. and love

  804. for other people

  805. rather than being

  806. so focused

  807. on your own fulfillment

  808. and your own sin.

  809. And then he goes on

  810. to say this,

  811. in addition

  812. to this general

  813. human problem

  814. and your weaknesses

  815. in this area,

  816. you are children

  817. of this generation,

  818. a generation

  819. in which all

  820. through your lives

  821. you have been encouraged

  822. to love yourself,

  823. to serve yourself,

  824. to make time

  825. for yourself,

  826. to find fulfillment

  827. for yourself.

  828. Instead of this

  829. absurd call

  830. from our culture

  831. to be self-centered,

  832. we have been created

  833. and redeemed

  834. for the Lord

  835. and to give ourselves

  836. every day

  837. to a life of love

  838. for others.

  839. These are the fundamental

  840. and most constant graces

  841. of repentance

  842. for which we need to pray

  843. and at which we need to work.

  844. Of course,

  845. you can see

  846. this is a long letter.

  847. It costs a dollar

  848. for him to mail it.

  849. The point is this,

  850. this man,

  851. it's not just

  852. that he's at the wrong place

  853. at the wrong time.

  854. He is not pursuing the good.

  855. He is not working hard

  856. like the ant.

  857. He is not loving

  858. his neighbor as himself.

  859. So it's not just

  860. his location

  861. but his activity.

  862. If he were an ant,

  863. he wouldn't have time

  864. to be wandering

  865. the streets

  866. by himself,

  867. himself.

  868. Because he's a simple person though,

  869. he has all this time

  870. on his hands.

  871. And so it's not just

  872. that we stay far away,

  873. that we pursue

  874. the love of others.

  875. We pursue true

  876. and real

  877. community.

  878. And of course,

  879. these aren't the only

  880. solutions to sexual sin.

  881. As I've told you,

  882. I'm going to say something,

  883. but not everything,

  884. but that's the one

  885. that's presented here.

  886. We stay far away

  887. from places

  888. where we might be tempted

  889. because we love God

  890. and we love his ways.

  891. And we look to do things

  892. that are serving others.

  893. And so we don't even have time,

  894. right?

  895. We're not even able

  896. to get caught up

  897. in these sorts of things.

  898. Of course,

  899. as I've been telling you,

  900. Jesus is our great

  901. and greater wisdom teacher.

  902. Matthew chapter 12,

    Matthew 12:42

  903. verse 42,

  904. tells us that Jesus

  905. is greater

  906. than Solomon.

  907. And Jesus teaches

  908. these very same things.

  909. Jesus also tells us

  910. to stay

  911. far away

  912. from sin.

  913. Remember,

  914. in the Sermon on the Mount,

  915. Matthew chapter 5,

    Matthew 5 chapter mention

  916. he says,

  917. this,

  918. if your right eye

  919. causes you to sin,

  920. tear it out

  921. and throw it away.

  922. For it is better

  923. that you lose

  924. one of your members

  925. than that your whole body

  926. be thrown into hell.

  927. And if your right hand

  928. causes you to sin,

  929. cut it off

  930. and throw it away.

  931. For it is better

  932. that you lose

  933. one of your members

  934. than that your whole body

  935. go into hell.

  936. So Jesus is just repeating

  937. as the greater wisdom teacher

  938. the same thing.

  939. Look,

  940. stay far away from sin.

  941. Whatever might be

  942. drawing you towards that,

  943. even if it's your eye,

  944. run away from it.

  945. Put it to death early

  946. so you don't have to suffer

  947. great consequences later.

  948. Of course,

  949. that's a motivation

  950. of fear

  951. and it's good and right

  952. to talk about

  953. the consequences of sin.

  954. But as I've been telling you,

  955. we need more than fear, right?

  956. We need a new love.

  957. We need something good

  958. and great

  959. to replace things

  960. that are little

  961. and small.

  962. And so Jesus also

  963. offers us something better.

  964. I told you from

  965. Proverbs chapter 5

    Proverbs 5 chapter mention

  966. that he makes us a promise

  967. again in Matthew 5,

  968. blessed are the pure in heart

  969. for they shall see God.

  970. We could say that God

  971. pulls us

  972. into a greater drama.

  973. He pulls us

  974. into something

  975. more beautiful.

  976. I shared with you

  977. last time

  978. from this book

  979. about the fact

  980. that there is

  981. something greater

  982. than sex, right?

  983. That sex points to.

  984. It's our relationship

  985. with God

  986. and the community

  987. that he's building.

  988. And this man points out

  989. from Mark chapter 2

    Mark 2 chapter mention

  990. the fact that Jesus

  991. refers to himself

  992. as the bridegroom.

  993. In other words,

  994. he is the true husband.

  995. He's inviting us

  996. into something

  997. ultimately

  998. that's even greater

  999. and better

  1000. than sex

  1001. and family

  1002. and marriage.

  1003. These things

  1004. are just small pictures

  1005. of the great future

1006. that Jesus has for us

  1007. that we experience

  1008. in part now

  1009. and will experience

  1010. in full

  1011. in the future.

1012. And so it's not just

1013. that we stay far away

  1014. from sexual sin

  1015. but we pursue

  1016. the real,

  1017. true intimacy

  1018. and love

  1019. and community

  1020. that Jesus offers us

  1021. now through himself

  1022. and through his community.

  1023. He gives us

  1024. something better

  1025. and greater

  1026. that is actually

  1027. worth our love.

  1028. He gives us

  1029. a better place

  1030. to walk

  1031. than the corner

  1032. that her house

  1033. is on.

  1034. Jesus offers us

  1035. something better

  1036. to pursue

  1037. and work for

  1038. and chase after.

  1039. Jesus,

  1040. the bridegroom,

  1041. is here.

  1042. Recently,

  1043. over during

  1044. the coronavirus

  1045. when we were all

  1046. under quarantine,

  1047. I received

  1048. a friend request

  1049. on Facebook

  1050. from someone

  1051. I have not had

  1052. contact with

  1053. in over a decade.

  1054. And this person

  1055. was not even really

  1056. a friend of mine.

  1057. They were just

  1058. an acquaintance.

1059. So I was very surprised

1060. that they were friending me

  1061. and I looked on

  1062. his profile

  1063. and I was shocked

1064. to see that this person

  1065. was engaged

  1066. in Christian ministry.

1067. The reason I was shocked

  1068. is because the time

1069. when I knew this individual,

  1070. he was very much

  1071. not a Christian.

  1072. He was living

  1073. a lifestyle

  1074. that we would not

  1075. follow as people

  1076. who love Jesus.

  1077. So I immediately

  1078. messaged him.

  1079. I said,

  1080. what in the world?

  1081. Why are you working

  1082. for such and such

  1083. organization?

  1084. He messaged me back,

  1085. yeah,

  1086. lots changed

  1087. since I knew you.

  1088. And so,

  1089. of course,

  1090. I was very curious.

  1091. I ended up having

1092. a phone call with him

  1093. because I wanted

1094. to hear about his journey

1095. to faith in Jesus Christ.

1096. And as we began talking,

1097. I kind of asked him,

  1098. you know,

  1099. what was it really

  1100. that convinced you?

1101. And he shared with me

1102. that one of the most

  1103. challenging things for him

  1104. in becoming a Christian

  1105. was embracing

  1106. the Christian sexual ethic.

  1107. And I said,

  1108. well,

  1109. what was it

  1110. that changed your mind?

  1111. You're like,

  1112. what book was it

  1113. that you read

1114. or what argument was it

  1115. that really,

  1116. he said,

  1117. it wasn't a book

  1118. or an argument.

  1119. He said,

  1120. I became a part

  1121. of a Christian community.

1122. And as I was part

  1123. of that community

1124. and I saw the gospel

  1125. lived out,

1126. I realized that it was true

  1127. and it was plausible.

1128. And even more than that,

  1129. and he said,

1130. this might be too much information,

1131. but as I was part

  1132. of that community,

  1133. as I was involved

  1134. in other people

  1135. in their lives,

  1136. living with them

  1137. and loving them,

  1138. I found myself naturally

  1139. looking at pornography

  1140. less and less.

  1141. I didn't want it anymore.

  1142. I had something better,

  1143. right?

  1144. He had real

  1145. and true relationships

  1146. and community.

  1147. He was pulled

  1148. into real love.

  1149. He was pulled

  1150. into a place

  1151. where he was actually

  1152. serving other people,

  1153. sacrificing for them.

  1154. And so brothers

  1155. and sisters,

  1156. Jesus calls us away

  1157. from sexual sin.

  1158. He calls us

  1159. to stay far away,

1160. to not even get close.

  1161. But he doesn't just

  1162. call us away.

  1163. He calls us

  1164. into something.

  1165. He calls us

  1166. into his greater story.

  1167. He calls us

  1168. into a greater community.

  1169. He calls us

  1170. into real love

  1171. and intimacy

  1172. and fellowship

  1173. and commitment.

1174. And so we can embrace that,

  1175. we can embrace him,

1176. and we can embrace wisdom

1177. instead of any other counterpart.

  1178. And we do that

  1179. because Jesus comes

1180. and does that for us first.

1181. And so we can do it

  1182. with joy,

  1183. loving and embracing

  1184. the people

1185. that God has given us,

  1186. loving our neighbor

  1187. as ourselves.

  1188. I invite you

  1189. to pray with me.

  1190. Our Father in heaven,

  1191. we thank you

  1192. and praise you again

  1193. for your word

1194. that is your gift to us.

  1195. We ask that you

  1196. would build us

  1197. up into a community

  1198. and people

  1199. who stay far away

  1200. from sexual sin.

  1201. and we embrace you

  1202. and the better story

  1203. that you've given us.

  1204. We thank you

  1205. that this isn't something

  1206. we do

  1207. by pulling ourselves up

  1208. by our bootstraps,

  1209. but it's something

1210. that Jesus gives to us

  1211. through his word

  1212. and in his community.

1213. And we ask that you

  1214. would make that true

  1215. of us

  1216. and of this church.

1217. And we ask these things

  1218. in Jesus' name.

  1219. Amen.

  1220. Amen.

  1221. Amen.

  1222. Amen.

  1223. Amen.

  1224. Amen.

  1225. Amen.

  1226. Amen.
