  1. So one of the things about your pastor taking a vacation is you get to hear from other godly men who come and proclaim the word of God.

  2. And this morning we have Davis Morgan.

  3. And I am a big fan of Davis Morgan, partly because when I asked him, I'm going to introduce you today, what is it that you want me to mention?

  4. He said, I am a native Texan.

  5. And you all know how I feel about that.

  6. And he also said, and I said, well, how are you adjusting?

  7. And he said, I miss Texas barbecue.

  8. So you know how that makes me feel as well.

  9. But he is the pastor of Westside Church.

  10. He's been there about six months, I think we decided.

  11. And we are just so gifted that he has chosen to come and preach to us this morning.

  12. He is the father of three, June, May, and Asa.

  13. And his wife's name is Tiffany.

  14. So thank you so much for blessing us this morning.

  15. And please come forward.

  16. In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, amen.

  17. It is so good to be with you, Cheyenne Mountain.

  18. Greetings from one of your sister churches here in the city.

  19. As Jim said, I am the pastor of Westside Church.

  20. And we have worship on Sunday afternoons.

  21. So I'm free to come and bring God's word to you this morning.

  22. And it is an honor to do that.

  23. So I want to invite you, if you have your Bibles, to open with me to the prophet Isaiah.

  24. Isaiah chapter 9.

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  25. Isaiah chapter 9, verses 1 through 7.

    Isaiah 9:1–7

  26. And you may be thinking, well, isn't this a Christmas passage?

  27. And I will admit that most of the time that we hear this passage, it is around the Advent season, around Christmas time.

  28. But we as a church have been going through Isaiah this summer.

  29. We've been going through Isaiah 1 through 12.

  30. And I'll speak more on that here in just a moment.

  31. But it has been such an encouragement to us going through this monumental book this summer.

  32. And our plan is to go through it over the next five summers, actually.

  33. So we're cutting it up into five pieces.

  34. And so today, I actually preached the last sermon there from Isaiah chapters 11 and 12 before we go into the fall.

    Isaiah 11 chapter mention

  35. But I preached this sermon just a few weeks ago.

  36. It was a blessing to me.

  37. It was a blessing to our people.

  38. And I pray it is a blessing to you.

  39. So draw your attention to the reading of God's word, his holy, his inspired word, given to us for everything regarding life, faith, and godliness.

  40. Isaiah chapter 9, verse 1.

    Isaiah 9:1

  41. But there will be no gloom for her who was in anguish.

  42. In the former time, he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali.

  43. But in the latter time, he has made glorious the way of the sea, the land beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.

  44. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light.

  45. Those who dwelt in the land of deep darkness, on them has light shone.

  46. You have multiplied the nation.

  47. You have increased its joy.

  48. They rejoice before you as with joy at the harvest, as they are glad when they divide the spoil.

  49. For the yoke of his burden and the staff for his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, you have broken as on the day of Midian.

  50. For every boot of the tramping warrior is in battle to molt, and every garment rolled in blood will be burned as fuel for the fire.

  51. For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given, and the government shall be upon his shoulder.

  52. And his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

  53. Of the increase of his government and of peace, there will be no end.

  54. On the throne of David and over his kingdom to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore.

  55. The zeal of the Lord of hosts will do this.

  56. This is the word of God.

  57. Amen.

  58. Let's pray real quick for our time in his word.

  59. Join me, please.

  60. Lord God, we do thank you for this word.

  61. We thank you for our time in it.

  62. Lord, it is a privilege that we have getting to hear this word, getting to sit under the preaching of your word, your primary means of grace,

  63. the way that you have chosen, Lord, to reveal the glory of Jesus to mankind and to us, your people.

  64. We pray that you would help us have eyes to see, ears to hear, a heart to receive the truth of your word.

  65. We also pray for the children who will be listening as well.

  66. We pray that you might give them the gift of illumination, the gift of understanding, Lord.

  67. We confess that apart from your grace, apart from your mercy and the work of your spirit, Lord, these things remain distant to us.

  68. They remain folly to us.

  69. And so we pray and ask that you would be gracious to your people now, that you would pour out your spirit and you would give us revelation of who Jesus Christ is.

  70. We pray this.

  71. We ask this in his name.

  72. Amen.

  73. Well, it's coming.

  74. Are you ready?

  75. It's 72 days, 8 hours, 28 minutes, and 43 seconds away.

  76. 42 seconds.

  77. 41 seconds.

  78. Ready or not, it's coming.

  79. Can you handle it?

  80. What is it, you ask?

  81. It is the 59th time in the history of our country that the presidential election will be held.

  82. And with rioting and protesting in every major city or many major cities, the social, the civil tension in our country at levels not seen in 50 years, the political landscape looking more divisive than ever.

  83. We could say that it appears that the stakes have never been higher.

  84. On top of that, we are right in the middle of a global pandemic.

  85. As of today, there have been 5,068 million cases of the coronavirus in our country.

  86. Nearly 5,800 in El Paso County alone.

  87. There have been 176,000 deaths in America.

  88. 151 of those have been in El Paso County.

  89. A stunning 54 million Americans have filed for unemployment since March.

  90. 665,000 of those are in our state, which is nearly one-fifth of our state's workforce.

  91. And on top of that, we are still faced with the unknown about when a vaccine will be developed to mitigate the virus to the point that life can, or if life can, return to normal pre-coronavirus.

  92. As Bob Dylan said, the times indeed are changing.

  93. We just don't know what they are changing into at this point.

  94. And around the world, while trust in government is at an all-time high around the world,

  95. in America, in a recent poll of 34,000 adults, 76% of those said they were more trusting of Amazon, Clorox, General Mills, and Hershey than our federal government.

  96. I'd take chocolate over the government right now as well.

  97. But in all seriousness, when we dig a little bit deeper beneath the surface of our country, what do we find?

  98. We find approximately 3,000 abortions are performed every day in our country.

  99. That's roughly 616,000 so far in 2020.

  100. 40% of all pregnancies in our country end in abortion.

  101. Among minorities, those numbers are even more staggering,

  102. with 1,000 of those 3,000 daily abortions being performed on minorities.

  103. 35% of children under the age of 18 live in homes with only one parent,

  104. with the percentage among minorities double that, nearly 70%.

  105. There are 443,000 children in foster care in our country,

  106. and more than 123,000 of those are awaiting adoption.

  107. Since March, there have been 1,600 shootings in Chicago,

  108. with nearly 340 of those resulting in murder.

  109. In New York, there have been nearly 600 shootings and nearly 200 killed.

  110. There have been 24,000 gun-related deaths halfway through the year.

  111. 10,000 of those have been homicide.

  112. 14,000 of those have been suicide.

  113. And to give you an idea of where those are typically at for the year,

  114. for the year, we average 15,000, and we're already at 24,000.

  115. Human trafficking organizations estimate that there are 40 million people,

  116. 40 million, who are in some form of slavery in the world,

  117. whether that is labor, whether that is sexual,

  118. whether that is child exploitation.

  119. In America, there are an estimated 220,000 to 250,000 children

  120. who are at risk for human trafficking or sexual exploitation.

  121. What about faith in God?

  122. Faith in God is at an all-time low in America,

  123. with only 60%, 60% of those in the latest polls convinced that God exists.

  124. That is down from 80% a decade ago.

  125. This is reflected in the increase.

  126. Maybe you've heard of this demographic.

  127. The nuns, N-O-N-E-S.

  128. The nuns, which stands for no affiliation,

  129. is now at 20% of American adults.

  130. This is at an all-time high, of course.

  131. And at the same time, church membership in our country

  132. is at an all-time low,

  133. with only 50% of Americans

  134. who say they belong to a church

  135. are actually members of that church.

  136. And I found out this recently

  137. in the six months since the coronavirus,

  138. that one-third of those who were previously attending church

  139. are no longer attending church,

  140. not even online, not even the live stream.

  141. Why do I share all of that with you?

  142. Well, as if you didn't already know,

  143. but to draw all this together,

  144. the outlook in our country is grim.

  145. There is darkness over our land.

  146. And it can be very easy for hopelessness

  147. and for despair to set in.

  148. Is it not?

  149. But the reason I share that with you

  150. is because much was the same

  151. for the nation of Judah in Isaiah's day.

  152. We come to Isaiah chapter nine,

  153. and at the end of chapter eight in Isaiah,

  154. the words that the prophet had

  155. was distress and darkness,

  156. the gloom of anguish over the land.

  157. That is where Judah, that is where Isaiah,

  158. that is where the nation of Israel was at the time.

  159. And up to this point in the prophet Isaiah,

  160. the questions that have become clear

  161. that Isaiah wants us to understand

  162. is one, who is man or understand the nature of man?

  163. And the example that God used

  164. was his own covenant people.

  165. His own covenant people.

  166. And right away in chapter one of Isaiah,

  167. we find that they are ignorant of who God is.

  168. They are full of sin and iniquity.

  169. They have turned away from God.

  170. And again, that is his chosen people.

  171. Those were the descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

  172. And the result was a society

  173. that was much like the society

  174. I just described of ours.

  175. A society that celebrates evil,

  176. intolerant of the good.

  177. In chapter five, verse 20,

  178. many of you may know that verse,

  179. where God says,

  180. woe to those who call evil good and good evil,

  181. who put darkness for light and light for darkness.

  182. That is where Judah was at in Isaiah's day.

  183. The other question that is apparent

  184. when you read Isaiah chapters one through 12

  185. is who is God?

  186. Who is God?

  187. God is the Holy One of Israel.

  188. He is absolutely sovereign.

  189. He is absolutely holy.

  190. And he is absolute just.

  191. He is absolute just.

  192. And as a result, he sends Isaiah.

  193. He sends Isaiah, who is, as it were,

  194. his covenant attorney,

  195. his prosecutor that is going to the nation.

  196. And he is bringing God's indictment to the people.

  197. And he's saying, you are guilty.

  198. This is how you are guilty.

  199. And if you don't repent, what was going to happen?

  200. Judgment was going to happen.

  201. Judgment was imminent.

  202. For Israel, the northern kingdom at the time,

  203. God had sent the prophets Hosea and Amos.

  204. They had pleaded with the people.

  205. They had warned the people.

  206. And Israel refused to listen.

  207. So then God sends Isaiah primarily to the nation of Judah.

  208. And Isaiah brings that same message.

  209. That judgment is imminent.

  210. But there is time to repent.

  211. There is time to repent.

  212. Darkness and distress over the land,

  213. he says at the end of chapter eight.

  214. And the chapter ends with this darkness over the land.

  215. And the question,

  216. the question that appears apparent

  217. is that the Davidic dynasty,

  218. the dynasty that God had promised to David,

  219. the dynasty that would be an eternal dynasty,

  220. that someone would sit on David's throne,

  221. that his throne would never cease

  222. to have someone seated upon the throne.

  223. That seems in jeopardy

  224. because the kings that had come after David,

  225. for the most part,

  226. had not followed in the ways of David.

  227. There had been a few good ones, of course.

  228. But overall, the kings are leading the people

  229. further and further away from God.

  230. So the question,

  231. what of the Davidic promise?

  232. What of the promise that God had made to his people?

  233. From a human perspective,

  234. if we read the first eight chapters of Isaiah,

  235. it appears bleak.

  236. It appears that there is no hope

  237. from a human perspective

  238. that this kingdom is going to continue.

  239. But what of the divine perspective?

  240. What will God do with the promises that he has made?

  241. And that's when we come to chapter nine of Isaiah.

  242. God will answer and he will answer emphatically.

  243. He will answer so that his people are yet reminded

  244. that he is the Lord and besides him, there is no God.

  245. Now, what is that emphatic answer?

  246. The emphatic answer is found in Isaiah nine,

  247. verses one through seven.

  248. Our passage breaks down.

  249. Here is the outline that I'm using

  250. if you would like to take notes.

  251. In verses one through three,

  252. we have the hope described.

  253. We have the hope described in verses one through three.

  254. We have the hope explained in verses four and five.

  255. And then we have the hope realized in verses six through seven.

  256. The hope described, the hope explained,

  257. and the hope realized.

  258. Now, look with me in verses one through three.

  259. The first thing that I want to point your attention to

  260. is the darkness is reversed.

  261. The darkness is reversed there in the first few verses.

  262. It says this,

  263. but there will be no gloom for her who was in anguish.

  264. In the former time, he brought into contempt

  265. the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali.

  266. This was the northern kingdom of Israel.

  267. After Solomon had died,

  268. Saul, David, and Solomon,

  269. these were the kings under the united kingdom

  270. of Judah and Israel.

  271. And after Solomon died,

  272. when his son Rehoboam took the throne,

  273. rebellion ensued,

  274. and the kingdom was split in half.

  275. And Jeroboam took the northern kingdom,

  276. took the northern kingdom of Israel,

  277. and Judah remained loyal to the Davidic throne.

  278. And so God is saying here

  279. that it's going to start,

  280. it's going to start in the place

  281. where the people had initially turned away from God,

  282. where the land was the darkest, we could say.

  283. It says in the latter times,

  284. he has made glorious the way of the sea,

  285. the land beyond the Jordan,

  286. Galilee of the nations.

  287. Israel, you may recall,

  288. fell to Assyria in 722.

  289. And Assyria came down along the coast

  290. into this very land

  291. that Isaiah is saying,

  292. light is going to dawn in this very place.

  293. More than that,

  294. the northern part of Israel

  295. was where in the books of Kings, for example,

  296. this is where idolatry and false worship

  297. were the deepest seeded in the land.

  298. You remember Jeroboam,

  299. the first thing that Jeroboam did

  300. when he took the northern kingdom away

  301. from the southern kingdom

  302. is that he set up two calves.

  303. He set up two calves

  304. in the land of Ephraim

  305. so that people would no longer

  306. travel down to Jerusalem.

  307. And by doing so,

  308. Jeroboam called the sacrificial system

  309. that God had put in place.

  310. At the very beginning,

  311. he set up this false worship.

  312. And if you remember what happened

  313. at Mount Sinai,

  314. when Aaron made the golden calf,

  315. it really brings to light

  316. the depths of the depravity,

  317. the depths of the idolatry

  318. where this was happening.

  319. And God says that the light

  320. is going to dawn there

  321. in that very land.

  322. Friends,

  323. this is a great reminder

  324. about the sovereignty of God.

  325. That he is able to make glorious,

  326. to use the language of verse one,

  327. that which was an ugly scar

  328. on the history of the nation.

  329. And may that be a great comfort

  330. to you and to me.

  331. Our scars,

  332. our shame,

  333. our sins.

  334. What is the Lord able to do

  335. with those things?

  336. He is able to make out of you

  337. and out of me

  338. something glorious.

  339. No matter how dark it may be,

  340. no matter how grim it may be,

  341. no matter how enslaved

  342. we may feel that we are,

  343. his light is brighter,

  344. his grace is greater,

  345. and his power is mightier

  346. than that sin

  347. in which you struggle with

  348. or that I struggle with.

  349. This passage reiterates

  350. the fact that his light

  351. is able to dawn

  352. into the darkest of places.

  353. The light has dawned,

  354. it says there in verse two.

  355. And notice how he describes,

  356. he talks about those

  357. that were in deep darkness.

  358. Deep darkness,

  359. a great light has dawned.

  360. In the Bible,

  361. deep darkness is talking moral,

  362. it's talking spiritual darkness here.

  363. It's talking about

  364. the nature of the heart.

  365. This is total depravity,

  366. we could say.

  367. The depravity that was rampant

  368. in the land,

  369. the sin and the rebellion

  370. that the people had had

  371. against God.

  372. And of course,

  373. light,

  374. light is associated

  375. with the presence of God.

  376. The presence of God

  377. in history,

  378. the presence of God

  379. interceding

  380. or intervening

  381. into history

  382. to step into

  383. our dark world

  384. so that the devastation

  385. might give way

  386. to glory

  387. and hope.

  388. And it says,

  389. in the land beyond the Jordan,

  390. in Galilee of the nations.

  391. Now,

  392. what's significant about that

  393. is that this was the land

  394. that was lost

  395. in the exile.

  396. God's work

  397. is that he's going

  398. to bring light

  399. into a place

  400. that there had not been

  401. the presence of God

  402. in a long time.

  403. More than that,

  404. it tells us

  405. that this is not only

  406. going to be

  407. for his covenant people,

  408. for the Jewish people,

  409. for Jews and Gentiles,

  410. but the Galilee

  411. of the nations.

  412. Again,

  413. this light,

  414. this light is going

  415. to start there

  416. and then it's going

  417. to expand

  418. and it's going

  419. to encompass

  420. the nations.

  421. Verse 3,

  422. we have the darkness

  423. reversed

  424. and then we have

  425. the joy multiplied.

  426. Look at verse 3

  427. with me.

  428. It says,

  429. you have multiplied

  430. the nation.

  431. You have increased

  432. its joy.

  433. They rejoice

  434. before you.

  435. Who is the subject?

  436. Who is doing

  437. all of these things,

  438. friends?

  439. It is the Lord.

  440. You have multiplied

  441. the nation.

  442. You have increased

  443. its joy.

  444. They rejoice

  445. before you.

  446. Joy.

  447. Joy multiplied

  448. at the dawning

  449. of this light.

  450. What comes to your mind

  451. when you think

  452. about the work of God?

  453. Is joy.

  454. Is it joy?

  455. Does joy,

  456. does your heart

  457. fill with joy?

  458. Joy in him.

  459. Joy in his sovereignty.

  460. Joy in his word,

  461. his promises

  462. and his work

  463. in which he has done.

  464. Joy is one of those words

  465. that can be hard

  466. to define sometimes.

  467. Typically,

  468. we associate it

  469. perhaps with happiness

  470. or welfare,

  471. prosperity,

  472. but that's not

  473. biblical joy.

  474. Biblical joy

  475. is rooted,

  476. it's grounded,

  477. we could say,

  478. in the Lord,

  479. in the person

  480. of who he is.

  481. you see life

  482. through the lens

  483. of him.

  484. You see life

  485. through the lens

  486. of God's glory,

  487. through his work

  488. in redemptive history.

  489. The dawn of light

  490. and joy

  491. in what God

  492. is doing in us.

  493. So,

  494. here's a question.

  495. Based off everything

  496. that I shared with you

  497. at the beginning,

  498. how is your joy

  499. right now?

  500. Are you struggling?

  501. Are you despondent

  502. about how the world

  503. is right now?

  504. About how our country is?

  505. Are you spiritually

  506. parched,

  507. down,

  508. famished?

  509. Are you overwhelmed

  510. by life?

  511. Our God, friends,

  512. our God has

  513. something for us.

  514. It is to see

  515. his grace

  516. in action.

  517. It is to see

  518. his grace in action.

  519. The light

  520. that has dawned

  521. in history

  522. through the

  523. redemptive work

  524. in which he is

  525. accomplishing.

  526. And he

  527. has included you

  528. in that.

  529. He has invited you

  530. to that.

  531. You are here today

  532. because you

  533. are included.

  534. See that light.

  535. Fight for the joy

  536. that is yours

  537. by faith.

  538. It's there

  539. for you,

  540. dear Christian.

  541. Fight for the joy.

  542. It's yours.

  543. And when we say

  544. that,

  545. we're not just

  546. talking about

  547. on the good days.

  548. But especially

  549. on the bad ones.

  550. When the burden

  551. and the oppression

  552. of sin

  553. feel almost

  554. unbearable,

  555. remember,

  556. remember what it

  557. says here

  558. in Isaiah 9.

  559. The light,

  560. the joy,

  561. and then in

  562. verses 4 and 5

  563. it talks about

  564. what it all means

  565. that this light

  566. has come.

  567. The hope

  568. explained in

  569. verses 4 and 5.

  570. It says,

  571. for the yoke

  572. of his burden

  573. and the staff

  574. of his shoulder,

  575. the rod

  576. of his oppressor,

  577. the Lord

  578. has broken

  579. as on the day

  580. of Midian.

  581. The Lord

  582. has broken

  583. the yoke.

  584. The Lord

  585. has lifted,

  586. lifted the burden,

  587. the oppression

  588. he has done.

  589. There's freedom,

  590. there's life here.

  591. The burden

  592. of guilt,

  593. the stains

  594. of shame,

  595. friends.

  596. God has removed

  597. those.

  598. This is like

  599. Christian in

  600. The Pilgrim's Progress,

  601. that classic

  602. by John Bunyan,

  603. where he

  604. sees the cross

  605. and he runs

  606. up the way

  607. of salvation.

  608. And here's

  609. what Bunyan

  610. says.

  611. He says,

  612. though the hill

  613. is high,

  614. I still desire

  615. to walk up it.

  616. I don't care

  617. how difficult

  618. it is because

  619. I understand

  620. that it is

  621. the way

  622. that leads

  623. to life.

  624. Leads to life.

  625. The power

  626. of grace,

  627. the power

  628. of God's work

  629. to destroy

  630. the burden,

  631. the guilt

  632. of sin,

  633. the oppression

  634. of shame,

  635. the power

  636. of grace

  637. to bring

  638. victory

  639. in what we

  640. share in

  641. is what he

  642. says there

  643. in verse 5.

  644. Look at verse 5

  645. with me.

  646. He says,

  647. for every boot

  648. of the tramping

  649. warrior in battle

  650. to molt

  651. and every garment

  652. rolled in blood

  653. will be burned

  654. as fuel

  655. for the fire.

  656. And here

  657. what Isaiah

  658. is foreseeing

  659. down the road

  660. is that the

  661. enemies of God,

  662. the enemies of God

  663. will be defeated.

  664. And the example

  665. that he gave,

  666. he talked about

  667. as the day

  668. of Midian,

  669. he said there

  670. at the end

  671. of verse 4.

  672. And that was

  673. when Gideon,

  674. if you remember

  675. that story

  676. in Judges

    Judges 6 chapter mention

  677. chapter 6,

  678. this is when

  679. Gideon

  680. started initially

  681. with 20,000

  682. warriors

  683. and God

  684. withered that

  685. away to 300.

  686. And through

  687. the work

  688. of the Lord,

  689. he brought

  690. victory

  691. when they were

  692. outnumbered

  693. five to one.

  694. It was a

  695. great victory

  696. for Israel

  697. at the time

  698. and it was

  699. something that

  700. they would

  701. reflect upon

  702. because they

  703. had no business

  704. winning that

  705. victory.

  706. That was the

  707. point.

  708. It was God

  709. who did it

  710. and he will

  711. do this great

  712. work yet again,

  713. friends.

  714. Light into

  715. darkness,

  716. joy at the

  717. breaking of

  718. the chains

  719. of sin

  720. and slavery

  721. and he will

  722. also defeat

  723. the enmity

  724. that exists,

  725. the enmity

  726. that exists

  727. in the world,

  728. the language

  729. of warfare

  730. there,

  731. Isaiah sees.

  732. And what

  733. Isaiah,

  734. in verse

  735. five,

  736. what Isaiah

  737. is essentially

  738. seeing,

  739. friends,

  740. is this.

  741. He is

  742. seeing,

  743. God has

  744. given him

  745. a picture

  746. of all

  747. down the

  748. corridors

  749. of history.

  750. Isaiah

  751. is seeing,

  752. is seeing

  753. this hope,

  754. this hope

  755. that is

  756. described

  757. in verses

  758. one through

  759. three,

  760. it's now

  761. being explained

  762. what is

  763. this light

  764. going to

  765. eventually

  766. do?

  767. What's

  768. going to

  769. be the

  770. end game?

  771. Isaiah

  772. sees it,

  773. that the

  774. enemies of

  775. God will

  776. be defeated.

  777. And why

  778. is he

  779. telling Isaiah

  780. this?

  781. It's so

  782. we don't

  783. miss when

  784. the hope

  785. is finally

  786. realized.

  787. In verses

  788. six and

  789. seven,

  790. the hope

  791. realized,

  792. the light,

  793. the joy,

  794. the victory,

  795. they are

  796. coming,

  797. declares

  798. the Lord.

  799. How are

  800. they

  801. coming?

  802. For

  803. unto us

  804. a child

  805. is born.

  806. Unto

  807. us

  808. a son

  809. is given.

  810. Now here's

  811. what I want

  812. you to

  813. see.

  814. God's

  815. promise of

  816. victory,

  817. it's not

  818. through an

  819. earthly

  820. conqueror

  821. by sword

  822. and oppression.

  823. Do you

  824. get that?

  825. It's through

  826. a child.

  827. It's through

  828. a son.

  829. That is

  830. absolutely

  831. incredible.

  832. This is

  833. completely

  834. counter to

  835. the way

  836. our world

  837. thinks

  838. about

  839. ambition,

  840. about power,

  841. about how

  842. do you

  843. set up,

  844. how do you

  845. rule over

  846. people.

  847. It must be

  848. through the

  849. sword,

  850. it must be

  851. through oppression,

  852. it must be

  853. through fear.

  854. That is not

  855. the way that

  856. God is going

  857. to accomplish

  858. his victory.

  859. What is

  860. he going

  861. to do?

  862. First of

  863. all, it

  864. says he's

  865. going to

  866. set up

  867. a kingdom.

  868. It says

  869. the government

  870. shall be

  871. upon his

  872. shoulder,

  873. and if we

  874. take with

  875. what it

  876. says there

  877. at the

  878. end of

  879. verse 7

  880. as well,

  881. the throne

  882. of David,

  883. his kingdom

  884. will be

  885. established,

  886. it will

  887. be upheld

  888. with justice

  889. and righteousness

  890. from this

  891. time forth

  892. and forever

  893. more.

  894. This is

  895. the coming

  896. of God's

  897. kingdom to

  898. earth.

  899. That is

  900. what he is

  901. going to

  902. do.

  903. He's

  904. going to

  905. set up

  906. his

  907. kingdom.

  908. Now,

  909. who is

  910. this

  911. son?

  912. The

  913. description

  914. that we're

  915. given

  916. in verse 6,

  917. at the end

  918. of verse 6,

  919. he is

  920. wonderful

  921. counselor.

  922. Literally,

  923. his wisdom

  924. is unmatched.

  925. He is

  926. mighty

  927. God,

  928. the warrior

  929. God,

  930. we could

  931. say.

  932. His courage,

  933. his strength

  934. is unmatched.

  935. He is

  936. everlasting

  937. father.

  938. Now,

  939. what is

  940. the meaning

  941. of this?

  942. This is

  943. covenantal

  944. language.

  945. This is

  946. covenantal

  947. love,

  948. covenantal

  949. power.

  950. His concern

  951. for his

  952. people is

  953. as though

  954. he is a

  955. father over

  956. his children.

  957. Prince of

  958. peace,

  959. the increase

  960. of his

  961. reign,

  962. and peace

  963. there will

  964. be no

  965. end.

  966. On the

  967. throne of

  968. David and

  969. over his

  970. kingdom,

  971. establish,

  972. uphold,

  973. with justice

  974. and righteousness

  975. from this

  976. time forth

  977. and forevermore.

  978. The zeal

  979. of the

  980. Lord of

  981. hosts

  982. will do

  983. this.

  984. The zeal,

  985. it is this

  986. burning desire

  987. that God

  988. has that

  989. this is

  990. going to

  991. be the

  992. answer.

  993. This is

  994. going to

  995. be God's

  996. answer to

  997. his people's

  998. predicament.

  999. Not only

  1000. his people,

  1001. but for the

  1002. world's

  1003. predicament.

  1004. For unto

  1005. us a

  1006. child is

  1007. born.

  1008. Unto

  1009. us a

  1010. son is

  1011. given.

  1012. Little did

  1013. Isaiah know

  1014. that it would

  1015. take 700

  1016. years for this

  1017. to happen.

  1018. But what

  1019. do we

  1020. know?

  1021. In the

  1022. fullness of

  1023. time,

  1024. God sent

  1025. forth his

  1026. son.

  1027. And we

  1028. read in

  1029. Luke chapter

    Luke 2 chapter mention

  1030. 2,

  1031. almost verbatim

  1032. with Isaiah

  1033. 7.

  1034. You know

  1035. the passage.

  1036. For unto

  1037. you is

  1038. born this

  1039. day in

  1040. the city

  1041. of David

  1042. a Savior

  1043. who is

  1044. Christ the

  1045. Lord.

  1046. He is

  1047. the Messiah.

  1048. He will

  1049. be great

  1050. and he will

  1051. be called

  1052. the Son

  1053. of the

  1054. Most High.

  1055. And the

  1056. Lord God

  1057. will give

  1058. him the

  1059. throne of

  1060. his father

  1061. David.

  1062. And he

  1063. will reign

  1064. over the

  1065. house of

  1066. Jacob forever.

  1067. And of

  1068. his kingdom

  1069. there will

  1070. be no

  1071. end.

  1072. Unto

  1073. us,

  1074. friends,

  1075. a child

  1076. has been

  1077. born.

  1078. Unto

  1079. us a

  1080. son has

  1081. been

  1082. given.

  1083. Why

  1084. has

  1085. this

  1086. son

  1087. been

  1088. given?

  1089. So

  1090. that

  1091. anyone

  1092. who

  1093. believes

  1094. in

  1095. him

  1096. should

  1097. not

  1098. perish

  1099. but

  1100. have

  1101. eternal

  1102. life.

  1103. For

  1104. God

  1105. did

  1106. not

  1107. send

  1108. his

  1109. son

  1110. into

  1111. the

  1112. world

  1113. to

  1114. condemn

  1115. the

  1116. world

  1117. but

  1118. that

  1119. the

  1120. world

  1121. through

  1122. him

  1123. might

  1124. be

  1125. saved.

  1126. And how

  1127. would he

  1128. do that?

  1129. How

  1130. would he

  1131. establish

  1132. his

  1133. throne?

  1134. He

  1135. would do

  1136. that

  1137. by taking

  1138. on the

  1139. form of

  1140. a servant.

  1141. And Isaiah

  1142. later

  1143. in chapter

  1144. 53

  1145. he sees

  1146. this same

  1147. son

  1148. as a

  1149. man of

  1150. sorrows.

  1151. He

  1152. becomes a

  1153. man of

  1154. sorrows

  1155. fully

  1156. experiencing

  1157. the pain

  1158. and the

  1159. darkness

  1160. of this

  1161. life.

  1162. You

  1163. have to

  1164. keep

  1165. that

  1166. in

  1167. mind

  1168. because

  1169. when

  1170. we

  1171. keep

  1172. that

  1173. in

  1174. mind

  1175. that

  1176. Jesus

  1177. experienced

  1178. the

  1179. darkness

  1180. of our

  1181. world

  1182. first

  1183. hand

  1184. it

  1185. brings

  1186. it

  1187. really

  1188. emphasizes

  1189. it

  1190. magnifies

  1191. what he

  1192. said

  1193. in

  1194. John

    John 8 chapter mention

  1195. chapter

  1196. 8

  1197. where

  1198. he

  1199. said

  1200. there

  1201. I

  1202. am

  1203. the

  1204. light

  1205. of

  1206. the

  1207. world

  1208. whoever

  1209. believes

  1210. in

  1211. me

  1212. shall

  1213. not

  1214. walk

  1215. in

  1216. darkness

  1217. but

  1218. will

  1219. have

  1220. the

  1221. light

  1222. of

  1223. life.

  1224. And

  1225. what

  1226. that

  1227. means

  1228. for

  1229. us

  1230. is

  1231. that

  1232. Jesus

  1233. is

  1234. able

  1235. to

  1236. overcome

  1237. our

  1238. darkness

  1239. he's

  1240. able

  1241. to

  1242. overcome

  1243. our

  1244. darkness

  1245. no matter

  1246. what

  1247. it

  1248. is

  1249. example

  1250. after

  1251. example

  1252. in the

  1253. gospels

  1254. of

  1255. those

  1256. who

  1257. were

  1258. in

  1259. darkness

  1260. the

  1261. dregs

  1262. of

  1263. society

  1264. drunkards

  1265. tax

  1266. collectors

  1267. prostitutes

  1268. even

  1269. even

  1270. even

  1271. the

  1272. self

  1273. righteous

  1274. and

  1275. the

  1276. proud

  1277. like

  1278. Peter

  1279. who

  1280. fell

  1281. the

  1282. hardest

  1283. among

  1284. his

  1285. disciples

  1286. the

  1287. darkness

  1288. that

  1289. we

  1290. all

  1291. know

  1292. is

  1293. there

  1294. the

  1295. darkness

  1296. that

  1297. we

  1298. are

  1299. even

  1300. unaware

  1301. of

  1302. that

  1303. we

  1304. are

  1305. blind

  1306. to

  1307. in

  1308. our

  1309. lives

  1310. Jesus

  1311. is

  1312. the

  1313. great

  1314. light

  1315. that

  1316. God

  1317. promised

  1318. through

  1319. Isaiah

  1320. that

  1321. he

  1322. would

  1323. dispel

  1324. the

  1325. great

  1326. darkness

  1327. in

  1328. us

  1329. the

  1330. great

  1331. darkness

  1332. that

  1333. loomed

  1334. over

  1335. mankind

  1336. and

  1337. here's

  1338. what

  1339. that

  1340. means

  1341. we

  1342. can

  1343. bring

  1344. our

  1345. sin

  1346. to

  1347. Jesus

  1348. and

  1349. with

  1350. confidence

  1351. know

  1352. that

  1353. he

  1354. can

  1355. handle

  1356. it

  1357. that

  1358. you

  1359. are

  1360. not

  1361. too

  1362. sinful

  1363. for

  1364. Jesus

  1365. I

  1366. am

  1367. not

  1368. too

  1369. sinful

  1370. for

  1371. Jesus

  1372. he

  1373. will

  1374. not

  1375. cast

  1376. us

  1377. off

  1378. but

  1379. instead

  1380. he

  1381. will

  1382. embrace

  1383. us

  1384. and

  1385. he

  1386. will

  1387. shine

  1388. his

  1389. light

  1390. and

  1391. dispel

  1392. the

  1393. darkness

  1394. in

  1395. each

  1396. one

  1397. of

  1398. us

  1399. he

  1400. can

  1401. do

  1402. that

  1403. friends

  1404. because

  1405. he

  1406. took

  1407. the

  1408. darkness

  1409. of

  1410. sin

  1411. upon

  1412. himself

  1413. the

  1414. wrath

  1415. the

  1416. condemnation

  1417. of

  1418. God

  1419. he

  1420. paid

  1421. he

  1422. paid

  1423. the

  1424. full

  1425. price

  1426. with

  1427. his

  1428. life

  1429. as

  1430. he

  1431. hung

  1432. on

  1433. the

  1434. cross

  1435. and

  1436. darkness

  1437. covered

  1438. the

  1439. land

  1440. when

  1441. the

  1442. enemies

  1443. thought

  1444. that

  1445. they

  1446. had

  1447. triumphed

  1448. over

  1449. him

  1450. he

  1451. was

  1452. triumphing

  1453. over

  1454. them

  1455. as

  1456. he

  1457. said

  1458. in

  1459. his

  1460. final

  1461. words

  1462. it

  1463. is

  1464. finished

  1465. and

  1466. then

  1467. to

  1468. demonstrate

  1469. the

  1470. reality

  1471. of

  1472. what

  1473. he

  1474. accomplished

  1475. what

  1476. did

  1477. he

  1478. do

  1479. he

  1480. rose

  1481. from

  1482. the

  1483. grave

  1484. and

  1485. the

  1486. apostles

  1487. say

  1488. the

  1489. reason

  1490. he

  1491. rose

  1492. from

  1493. the

  1494. grave

  1495. is

  1496. because

  1497. it

  1498. was

  1499. impossible

  1500. for

  1501. the

  1502. grave

  1503. to

  1504. hold

  1505. him

  1506. down

  1507. and

  1508. he

  1509. has

  1510. been

  1511. given

  1512. all

  1513. authority

  1514. in

  1515. heaven

  1516. and

  1517. on

  1518. earth

  1519. his

  1520. reign

  1521. is

  1522. come

  1523. his

  1524. reign

  1525. has

  1526. come

  1527. repentance

  1528. the

  1529. forgiveness

  1530. of

  1531. sins

  1532. are

  1533. offered

  1534. to

  1535. you

  1536. this

  1537. day

  1538. in

  1539. his

  1540. name

  1541. for

  1542. all

  1543. who

  1544. will

  1545. believe

  1546. so

  1547. where

  1548. are

  1549. you

  1550. looking

  1551. for

  1552. answers

  1553. what are

  1554. you

  1555. hoping

  1556. for

  1557. in

  1558. 2020

  1559. how are

  1560. you

  1561. hoping

  1562. that

  1563. 2020

  1564. is

  1565. going

  1566. to

  1567. end

  1568. because

  1569. one day

  1570. it will

  1571. end

  1572. one day

  1573. 2020

  1574. will

  1575. end

  1576. but

  1577. whatever

  1578. our

  1579. outlook

  1580. your

  1581. king

  1582. is

  1583. reigning

  1584. and

  1585. ruling

  1586. even

  1587. now

  1588. until

  1589. that final

  1590. day

  1591. Isaiah

  1592. saw that

  1593. final day

  1594. when the

  1595. enemies of

  1596. God would

  1597. be defeated

  1598. with

  1599. him

  1600. you

  1601. have

  1602. perfect

  1603. righteousness

  1604. you

  1605. have

  1606. justice

  1607. he

  1608. will

  1609. make

  1610. all

  1611. wrongs

  1612. right

  1613. perfect

  1614. peace

  1615. in

  1616. him

  1617. the

  1618. day

  1619. has

  1620. arisen

  1621. the

  1622. day

  1623. or

  1624. the

  1625. day

  1626. is

  1627. foregone

  1628. the

  1629. light

  1630. has

  1631. come

  1632. look

  1633. up

  1634. dear

  1635. people

  1636. of

  1637. God

  1638. for

  1639. your

  1640. redemption

  1641. draws

  1642. near

  1643. your

  1644. king

  1645. has

  1646. come

  1647. and

  1648. he

  1649. is

  1650. coming

  1651. again

  1652. amen

  1653. amen

  1654. let's

  1655. pray

  1656. together

  1657. lord

  1658. we

  1659. thank

  1660. you

  1661. for

  1662. this

  1663. time

  1664. we

  1665. thank

  1666. you

  1667. for

  1668. the

  1669. promise

  1670. of

  1671. isaiah

  1672. chapter

  1673. nine

  1674. lord

  1675. it

  1676. is

  1677. not

  1678. only

  1679. a

  1680. promise

  1681. that

  1682. unto

  1683. us

  1684. a

  1685. child

  1686. is

  1687. born

  1688. unto

  1689. us

  1690. a

  1691. son

  1692. is

  1693. given

  1694. lord

  1695. but

  1696. that

  1697. that

  1698. promise

  1699. has

  1700. been

  1701. realized

  1702. in

  1703. history

  1704. in

  1705. the

  1706. humble

  1707. first

  1708. coming

  1709. of

  1710. your

  1711. son

  1712. lord

  1713. we

  1714. marvel

  1715. at

  1716. what

  1717. Jesus

  1718. has

  1719. done

  1720. for

  1721. us

  1722. we

  1723. marvel

  1724. at

  1725. the

  1726. fact

  1727. that

  1728. lord

  1729. there

  1730. is

  1731. great

  1732. darkness

  1733. over

  1734. our

  1735. land

  1736. there

  1737. is

  1738. great

  1739. darkness

  1740. even

  1741. over

  1742. our

  1743. lives

  1744. to

  1745. this

  1746. very

  1747. moment

  1748. lord

  1749. we

  1750. confessed

  1751. our

  1752. sins

  1753. earlier

  1754. to

  1755. you

  1756. lord

  1757. nothing

  1758. in

  1759. our

  1760. hands

  1761. do

  1762. we

  1763. bring

  1764. simply

  1765. to

  1766. the

  1767. cross

  1768. do

  1769. we

  1770. cling

  1771. and

  1772. we

  1773. long

  1774. for

  1775. the

  1776. day

  1777. when

  1778. our

  1779. king

  1780. does

  1781. return

  1782. until

  1783. then

  1784. lord

  1785. help

  1786. us

  1787. to

  1788. be

  1789. steadfast

  1790. help

  1791. us

  1792. to

  1793. see

  1794. the

  1795. world

  1796. through

  1797. the

  1798. lens

  1799. of

  1800. king

  1801. jesus

  1802. help

  1803. us

  1804. to

  1805. share

  1806. that

  1807. hope

  1808. that

  1809. treasure

  1810. that

  1811. we

  1812. have

  1813. with

  1814. others

  1815. around

  1816. us

  1817. as

  1818. well

  1819. lord

  1820. we

  1821. thank

  1822. you

  1823. for

  1824. this

  1825. time

  1826. this

  1827. covenant

  1828. meeting

  1829. as

  1830. your

  1831. people

  1832. we

  1833. pray

  1834. that

  1835. we

  1836. would

  1837. go

  1838. out

  1839. from

  1840. here

  1841. comforted

  1842. transformed

  1843. and

  1844. our

  1845. hope

  1846. renewed

  1847. that

  1848. is

  1849. found

  1850. in

  1851. your

  1852. son

  1853. and

  1854. your

  1855. son

  1856. alone

  1857. and

  1858. it's

  1859. in

  1860. his

  1861. name

  1862. we

  1863. pray

  1864. amen

  1865. and

  1866. for

  1867. a

  1868. especially

  1869. you
