  1. in Jesus' inauguration of ministry on earth.

  2. As he begins, Matthew records his birth, his heritage,

  3. and it goes on to his baptism,

  4. which was the first thing he did in his public ministry.

  5. And the second thing he did was his fasting and temptation.

  6. If you remember Matthew chapter 3,

    Matthew 3 chapter mention

  7. we have Jesus recorded being baptized by John the Baptist,

  8. and he says this kind of mysterious thing.

  9. When John asks and objects to baptizing Jesus,

  10. Jesus responds to him that this is done to fulfill all righteousness.

  11. And there's some mystery in those words,

  12. but part of what Jesus' meaning there

  13. was that he had to be baptized as our representative,

  14. as the first fruits of the Christian church.

  15. He was baptized to fulfill all righteousness.

  16. And then we have Jesus following his baptism to the wilderness,

  17. to the wilderness and temptation.

  18. And we can also say that Jesus suffered temptation.

  19. He went into the wilderness, the place of testing,

  20. to fulfill all righteousness.

  21. He did that for our sakes, like the Catechism teaches us.

  22. Jesus not only died for our sakes, he lived for our sakes,

  23. and he suffered temptation all for our sake.

  24. So when you ask the question, which is a natural one to ask,

  25. why did Jesus have to be tempted?

  26. The scripture here gives us an answer,

  27. that Jesus was tempted to redeem Israel's failure

  28. when Israel was tested in the wilderness,

  29. that he might come through untouched by temptation.

  30. To be our savior, Jesus had to succeed where Israel had failed.

  31. And that's what's recorded in Matthew chapter 4.

    Matthew 4 chapter mention

  32. And I'm going to read verses 1 through 11.

  33. If you follow along in your Bibles, I'll read it from the ESV,

  34. which is the translation that's in your worship guides.

  35. Starting in verse 1, this is the word of the Lord.

  36. Verse 5.

  37. Jesus said to him,

  38. And again, it is written,

  39. You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.

  40. And again the devil took him to a very high mountain

  41. and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in their glory.

  42. And he said to him,

  43. All of these I give to you,

  44. if you will fall down and worship me.

  45. Then Jesus said to him,

  46. Be gone, Satan, for it is written,

  47. You shall worship the Lord your God,

  48. and him only shall you serve.

  49. Then the devil left him,

  50. and behold, angels came and were ministering to him.

  51. May the Lord add his blessing to the reading

  52. and the careful hearing of his word.

  53. So as we begin,

  54. in verse 1,

  55. this episode of Jesus' temptation in the wilderness,

  56. the passage starts with this.

  57. Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness

  58. to be tempted by the devil.

  59. And the key words there,

  60. by the Spirit into the wilderness,

  61. tell us what is happening.

  62. The wilderness in biblical language had a symbol to it.

  63. It recalled what Israel endured

  64. after their redemption from Egypt.

  65. And the wilderness was a place of testing.

  66. The wilderness in biblical imagery is a place of testing.

  67. And that's what's happening to Jesus.

  68. He's enduring testing to prove his obedience

  69. in the way that Israel was tested in the wilderness.

  70. And it's where Israel failed in the wilderness.

  71. If you remember the story of,

  72. we'll call it the second most spectacular redemption in history,

  73. which is the redemption of Egypt

  74. or the redemption of Israel from slavery.

  75. And you remember from the story of Exodus,

  76. the ten plagues that culminated

  77. in the death of the firstborn sons of Egypt,

  78. which caused Pharaoh to finally let the Israelites go.

  79. All the people witnessed that,

  80. the death of the firstborn sons

  81. and the Israelites themselves being protected

  82. from that curse.

  83. Then as they left

  84. and the Israelites were followed by Pharaoh's armies,

  85. the Lord parted the Red Sea before them,

  86. showing by a magnificent hand and an outstretched arm,

  87. the scripture says,

  88. how he would deliver them.

  89. And then after the Red Sea,

  90. they journeyed in the wilderness,

  91. guided by a pillar of cloud by night,

  92. by day and a pillar of fire by night.

  93. While they journeyed,

  94. their clothes didn't fade,

  95. their shoes didn't wear out.

  96. When they were hungry,

  97. God gave them bread from heaven to eat.

  98. When they were thirsty,

  99. he gave them water out of a dry rock.

  100. God gave Israel every gift and grace imaginable

  101. to sustain them

  102. through their period of testing in the wilderness.

  103. And what did they do?

  104. How did Israel respond

  105. when they were tested in the wilderness,

  106. though God sustained them with his gifts?

  107. Israel responded by testing God,

  108. by rejecting God,

  109. by forgetting him.

  110. After all these things were witnessed by the Israelites

  111. and the Lord led them to Mount Sinai,

  112. they started to worship idols.

  113. They had forgotten God already.

  114. Because the Israelites,

  115. the offspring of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob,

  116. share the same nature that we do,

  117. the nature that accepts gifts,

  118. that enjoys gifts,

  119. but spurns and forgets the giver.

  120. That's our nature.

  121. That's what failed in the wilderness.

  122. Because we have a nature like the Israelites,

  123. where we will accept gifts,

  124. but we will spurn the giver.

  125. There's something we could call,

  126. that I've coined,

  127. the Christmas afternoon syndrome.

  128. Parents have seen it.

  129. Kids, you probably remember it.

  130. You especially remember the anticipation

  131. of Christmas morning.

  132. Months, maybe you're already thinking

  133. about your list right now.

  134. Months before Christmas,

  135. you're preparing your list,

  136. and the anticipation builds to that morning

  137. when you receive your gifts,

  138. and you open them,

  139. and it's just what you wanted, hopefully.

  140. And you're grateful,

  141. and you're happy,

  142. and you hug your parents,

  143. and you thank them.

  144. And then something happens.

  145. Hours later,

  146. Christmas afternoon strikes.

  147. And kids, if you don't remember saying this,

  148. your parents might.

  149. What do you do, kids,

  150. when Christmas afternoon comes around?

  151. Some of you might have said something like this

  152. at least one year.

  153. You say,

  154. I'm bored.

  155. So what happened?

  156. What happened between Christmas morning

  157. and Christmas afternoon?

  158. That joy and that celebration

  159. turned to boredom and frustration.

  160. Maybe your parents at that signal said,

  161. well, it's time to write thank you cards.

  162. It's time to write thank you cards

  163. to your relatives,

  164. and to you that was just insult to injury.

  165. Oh, I've got to write thank you cards now,

  166. and it just made it worse, right?

  167. Well, what was happening?

  168. What was happening to that joy that you had

  169. as you received your gifts,

  170. but then you're forced to remember the giver?

  171. You had to write thank you cards

  172. because your parents are trying to teach you

  173. about thankfulness,

  174. and they're trying to give you the lessons

  175. that only come with time

  176. where when a person is thankful

  177. and you grow in maturity,

  178. you enjoy the gifts that remind you of the giver.

  179. You enjoy little knickknacks

  180. that kids find boring

  181. because they remind you of the person

  182. that gave them to you.

  183. That comes with maturity.

  184. Israel was not mature.

  185. Israel was like you kids sometimes

  186. on Christmas afternoon.

  187. When you want the gifts,

  188. but you would rather not remember the giver.

  189. That's our nature.

  190. That's what failed in the wilderness.

  191. That's what Jesus came to redeem,

  192. to recapitulate,

  193. and that's my theology word for today.

  194. That's the only theology word

  195. we'll have to remember,

  196. a recapitulation,

  197. which means to come under another head.

  198. Before we go into that,

  199. we're going to talk about

  200. what the Lord says

  201. about Israel's testing in the wilderness

  202. that he explains from Joshua 5.

  203. This is Joshua 5, verse 6,

    Joshua 5:6

  204. where the Lord describes

  205. the response of the people of Israel.

  206. For the people of Israel

  207. walked 40 years in the wilderness

  208. until all the nation,

  209. the men of war who came out of Egypt,

  210. perished because they did not obey

  211. the voice of the Lord.

  212. The Lord swore to them

  213. that he would not let them see the land

  214. that the Lord had sworn to their fathers

  215. to give to us,

  216. a land flowing with milk and honey.

  217. Because of the Israelites' failure

  218. to remember God,

  219. they didn't enter the promised land.

  220. The consequences were severe.

  221. Even though they enjoyed the gifts,

  222. they loved them for their own sake.

  223. And they received condemnation

  224. for failing the test in the wilderness.

  225. And we share that condemnation

  226. when we are in Israel,

  227. when we share the nature of Adam.

  228. So again, you ask,

  229. why did Jesus have to enter the wilderness?

  230. Why did he have to be tempted?

  231. The answer is in that theological word,

  232. recapitulation.

  233. And it just, it's easy to define.

  234. It comes from a Latin word

  235. that we know well,

  236. from a capital, right?

  237. A capital is the head.

  238. So your capital city

  239. is the capital of a state.

  240. When you're in battle,

  241. if the capital falls,

  242. the nation falls.

  243. The capital is a representation of the whole.

  244. So recapitulation means

  245. to put under a new head,

  246. to recapital.

  247. What Jesus did in entering the wilderness

  248. was recapitulate

  249. the wandering of Israel,

  250. the testing of Israel.

  251. Where Israel failed,

  252. under their head, Adam,

  253. Jesus would restore.

  254. He would redeem

  255. because He would become the new head.

  256. He would do the same thing

  257. that Israel did.

  258. He was tested in the wilderness,

  259. but He would be shown approved.

  260. He would recapitulate.

  261. We see it when we look through Isaiah.

  262. Some of you remember a few years ago

  263. when we studied Isaiah in Sunday school.

  264. When you look at starting in Isaiah 42 and 43,

  265. when the word describes the servant of the Lord,

  266. there are these places

  267. where Isaiah describes the servant of the Lord

  268. and it's clearly Israel.

  269. And then He changes voice

  270. where that servant of the Lord

  271. is this Holy One who is to come,

  272. this Holy One who they're anticipating.

  273. And you see it especially in Isaiah chapter 50.

    Isaiah 50 chapter mention

  274. So if you want to follow me there

  275. in Isaiah chapter 50,

    Isaiah 50 chapter mention

  276. I'll read verse 1

  277. and then we'll continue on a little bit

  278. in that chapter.

  279. Verse 1 in Isaiah 50 starts,

  280. Behold, for your iniquities you were sold

  281. and for your transgressions

  282. your mother was sent away.

  283. So there's the servant of the Lord, Israel,

  284. who is rebellious.

  285. Who is sold for their transgressions.

  286. But it continues in verse 5

  287. where the Lord God has opened my ear

  288. and I was not rebellious.

  289. I turned not backward.

  290. I gave my back to those who strike

  291. and my cheeks to those who pull out the beard.

  292. I hid not my face from disgrace and spitting.

  293. So here the servant of the Lord is not Israel

  294. but the one who is to come.

  295. The same servant recapitulated,

  296. the one who would not turn back,

  297. the one who is not rebellious.

  298. And it reflects what we're taught in the catechism.

  299. That what did Christ do

  300. to be humiliated in this life?

  301. It was conflicting with the indignities of the world.

  302. That those who struck his cheeks

  303. and pulled out his beard

  304. and he hid not his face from disgrace and spitting,

  305. the indignities of the world he suffered.

  306. And he also suffered temptation

  307. as the servant that Isaiah spoke about.

  308. So Christ recapitulated the temptation

  309. in the wilderness for us.

  310. Why?

  311. Because of what Paul says in Romans 8, 4.

  312. In order that the righteous requirement of the law

  313. might be fulfilled in us

  314. for us who now walk according to the spirit

  315. and not according to the flesh.

  316. Christ went into the wilderness,

  317. the place of testing,

  318. to redeem the failure of our nature,

  319. the nature that we inherited with Adam.

  320. So let's go on to verse 2.

  321. Verse 2 begins to describe the conditions

  322. that were set in Jesus' temptation.

  323. It says,

  324. after fasting 40 days and 40 nights,

  325. he was hungry.

  326. Now there's probably not many of us,

  327. if any of us,

  328. who have endured a 40-day fast.

  329. A 40-day fast is humanly possible,

  330. but it brings you basically

  331. to the brink of physical starvation.

  332. That's where Jesus was.

  333. The limit of human weakness.

  334. There isn't much longer you can go

  335. without food and water after 40 days.

  336. Jesus was at the limit of his human weakness.

  337. And in the limit of that weakness,

  338. he remained obedient.

  339. That's what made it a test.

  340. That's what made this temptation a testing.

  341. And the word that you have translated

  342. in your Bibles that's maybe translated temptation,

  343. it also has the sense of testing.

  344. And that's an important sense

  345. because that's really what's happening here

  346. in this passage.

  347. Jesus himself not being tempted,

  348. Jesus was being tested

  349. to be proven as the one who would obey,

  350. who would obey in the wilderness.

  351. It's because Jesus was not tempted

  352. in the same way that we are,

  353. namely tempted with sin,

  354. that he can be our savior.

  355. So that's important.

  356. Though Satan brought temptation,

  357. Jesus himself was not tempted

  358. because he has no sinful desires.

  359. If you want proof of that,

  360. you look at James chapter one.

  361. James chapter one in verse 13

  362. says,

  363. let no one say when he is tempted,

  364. I am being tempted by God.

  365. For why?

  366. For God cannot be tempted with evil.

  367. Remember Jesus being fully man and fully God

  368. cannot be tempted by evil.

  369. Jesus was never tempted

  370. by what Satan offered him.

  371. And James continues,

  372. and God himself tempts no one,

  373. but each person is tempted

  374. when he is lured and enticed

  375. by his own desire.

  376. Jesus was not lured and enticed

  377. by sinful desire.

  378. Jesus' desires were the desires

  379. we had in the flesh.

  380. Jesus was hungry.

  381. He desired food.

  382. That was the temptation

  383. that Satan offered.

  384. But Satan offered it

  385. in a way that would not glorify God,

  386. in a way that Jesus would violate

  387. his covenant with his father.

  388. And that was no temptation

  389. for the Holy One of God.

  390. The Catechism reading,

  391. when it answers,

  392. how did Christ humble himself

  393. in his life,

  394. says it was by conflicting

  395. with the indignities of this world

  396. and the temptations of Satan.

  397. He conflicted with it.

  398. He was not vulnerable to it.

  399. Christ proved his righteous life

  400. by conflicting with temptations,

  401. by conflicting with indignities,

  402. not being vulnerable to them,

  403. having no sinful desire.

  404. What Matthew's showing us here

  405. in verse two,

  406. this is the bottom line.

  407. He's showing us how Jesus

  408. underwent temptation

  409. at the very limit

  410. of human weakness.

  411. He was as weak

  412. as any human could be,

  413. yet he still trusted God.

  414. The first temptation starts

  415. in verse three.

  416. If you'll read with me

  417. in Matthew chapter four,

  418. verse three and four,

  419. the tempter came and said to him,

  420. if you are the son of God,

  421. command these stones

  422. to become loaves of bread.

  423. But he answered him,

  424. it is written,

  425. man shall not live by bread alone,

  426. but by every word

  427. that comes from the mouth of God.

  428. So in the first temptation,

  429. Satan suggests to Jesus

  430. that he should break his fast.

  431. Simple as that.

  432. Just break your fast.

  433. Use your power

  434. to break your fast.

  435. So what's wrong with that?

  436. After all,

  437. if you look at the gospel of John,

  438. chapter five,

  439. Jesus would use divine power

  440. to provide bread,

  441. to provide bread for his followers.

  442. It wasn't against Jesus' conscience

  443. to use divine power

  444. in order to save people,

  445. in order to provide for them.

  446. And why not himself also?

  447. So he would eventually

  448. break his fast anyway.

  449. Why not now?

  450. Why not at Satan's suggestion?

  451. But here, though,

  452. Jesus is in the wilderness

  453. to do what?

  454. To prove his humility,

  455. to be humbled,

  456. to prove that his humble trust

  457. in his Father

  458. is greater than the greatest desire

  459. one can have,

  460. to avoid death by starvation.

  461. Jesus is in the wilderness

  462. to prove his humble trust

  463. in his Father.

  464. This is how Adam and Eve fell.

  465. Remember, Adam and Eve

  466. weren't hungry

  467. when they ate the forbidden fruit.

  468. They weren't at the limit

  469. of human weakness.

  470. Adam and Eve fell in this way

  471. because they believed God

  472. was holding something good

  473. back from them.

  474. They believed this fruit,

  475. as Satan suggested,

  476. was a good thing for them

  477. and God didn't want them

  478. to have it.

  479. That God was holding

  480. something good

  481. back from them.

  482. They didn't trust God.

  483. Jesus,

  484. even at the limit

  485. of weakness,

  486. trusted God.

  487. It's the same thing

  488. with Israel.

  489. Israel,

  490. though they were in the desert,

  491. they were in the wilderness,

  492. they were provided for by God

  493. with food,

  494. with water.

  495. But they grumbled.

  496. They grumbled against him

  497. because they didn't trust him.

  498. Even as they had

  499. the quail and the manna

  500. that God fed them with,

  501. they forgot him.

  502. And they said,

  503. after their stomachs

  504. were empty again,

  505. they said,

  506. Moses,

  507. you brought us out here

  508. in the middle of the desert

  509. to die.

  510. It would be better

  511. to go back into slavery.

  512. They had forgotten

  513. the grace

  514. that they were given.

  515. They had forgotten

  516. the giver

  517. who had the power

  518. to continue to feed them,

  519. to continue to supply them.

  520. So Jesus' reply

  521. to Satan's suggestion

  522. comes from Deuteronomy 8.3.

  523. The previous verse

  524. that Jesus quoted

  525. starts,

  526. And he humbled you,

  527. and he let you hunger,

  528. and he fed you with manna,

  529. which you did not know,

  530. nor did your fathers know,

  531. that he might make you know

  532. that man does not live

  533. by bread alone,

  534. but man lives

  535. by every word

  536. that comes from

  537. the mouth of the Lord.

  538. The Lord let Jesus,

  539. as he let Israel,

  540. hunger.

  541. Why?

  542. So that he could teach them

  543. that they can still

  544. depend on him.

  545. They can depend on him

  546. and their weakness.

  547. So what the Israelites

  548. did not learn,

  549. Jesus knew.

  550. The humility.

  551. He knew the humility

  552. that teaches you

  553. that hunger

  554. or no hunger,

  555. the Lord will sustain him.

  556. Jesus wasn't tempted

  557. by Satan

  558. because he trusted

  559. his father's purpose

  560. for his suffering.

  561. In this case,

  562. he trusted his father's purpose

  563. even in his desperate hunger.

  564. humility and obedience

  565. before temptation.

  566. That was Jesus' response.

  567. And it was rewarded

  568. if you look forward

  569. to verse 11

  570. when God sent his angels

  571. to minister to him.

  572. It's a reasonable inference

  573. to say,

  574. how did the angels minister?

  575. Well, they ministered with food.

  576. They broke his fast.

  577. God had in mind

  578. all the time

  579. to provide for Jesus,

  580. to break his fast,

  581. to relieve his suffering.

  582. But God did it.

  583. And Jesus waited

  584. for God to do it.

  585. So for Christians

  586. who have said,

  587. it's hard to trust God

  588. to provide

  589. when you have a need

  590. that you don't see him supplying.

  591. It is a hard question.

  592. It's a natural question

  593. because it is hard

  594. to trust God to provide

  595. when you don't see him supplying.

  596. Christians should look

  597. no further than this episode

  598. because the father

  599. had it in mind

  600. to provide for Jesus

  601. when he was at his limit.

  602. You haven't reached your limit.

  603. There isn't a point

  604. where Jesus,

  605. your Lord,

  606. will let you go beyond

  607. your human limits

  608. before he provides for you.

  609. Humble trust in the father

  610. suggests

  611. that we can trust him

  612. even when we are weak,

  613. even when we don't see

  614. his provision.

  615. And Jesus didn't.

  616. Jesus was there

  617. without food,

  618. without water,

  619. yet trusting in his father.

  620. Even in your most desperate need,

  621. the scripture says,

  622. you do not live

  623. by bread alone,

  624. but by every word

  625. that proceeds

  626. from the mouth of God.

  627. And that's not just poetry.

  628. That's the promise

  629. that God will provide.

  630. That's the promise

  631. that God will provide

  632. when you're hungry,

  633. when you're thirsty,

  634. when you're desperate

  635. because he knows your limits.

  636. He knows your limits

  637. better than you do.

  638. So the first temptation,

  639. the first temptation,

  640. we could say,

  641. Satan tempts Jesus

  642. with the desire of the flesh.

  643. If you go to the second temptation,

  644. you could say,

  645. Satan tempts Jesus

  646. with the desire of his spirit,

  647. with his very trust in God.

  648. Satan wonders,

  649. could even his trust in God

  650. be exploited

  651. if he trusts him so much

  652. that he would ignore his hunger.

  653. So that's what continues

  654. in verse five.

  655. Then the devil took him

  656. to the holy city

  657. and set him on the pinnacle

  658. of the temple

  659. and he said to him,

  660. if you are the son of God,

  661. throw yourself down

  662. for it is written,

  663. he will command his angels

  664. concerning you

  665. and on their hands

  666. they will bear you up

  667. lest you strike your foot

  668. against a stone.

  669. Jesus said to him,

  670. again, it is written,

  671. you shall not put the Lord,

  672. your God to the test.

  673. So Satan tempts Jesus

  674. not just with the desires

  675. of the flesh

  676. but with the desires

  677. of his own spirit

  678. that trusted God

  679. and he uses scripture

  680. and it's important to note

  681. that Satan isn't taking

  682. scripture out of context here.

  683. He's using Psalm 91.

  684. This was not out of context.

  685. This was a real promise

  686. to Christ,

  687. namely that God

  688. would protect him.

  689. God would not allow

  690. his holy one's foot

  691. to strike a stone.

  692. In context,

  693. it begins in verse nine

  694. from Psalm 91.

  695. Because you have made

  696. the Lord your dwelling place,

  697. the Most High

  698. who is my refuge,

  699. no evil shall be allowed

  700. to befall you

  701. or no plague

  702. come near your tent.

  703. For he will command

  704. his angels concerning you

  705. to guard you

  706. in all your ways.

  707. On their hands

  708. they will bear you up

  709. lest you strike your foot

  710. against a stone.

  711. So Satan quotes

  712. the scripture rightly.

  713. He doesn't always do that

  714. but in this case he does.

  715. He quoted it rightly.

  716. It was not out of context.

  717. That promise was

  718. first and foremost

  719. for Christ.

  720. God's holy one.

  721. But again,

  722. humble obedience

  723. to the Father says

  724. Jesus did not put

  725. his Father to the test.

  726. So what is then

  727. the right way

  728. to respond

  729. when Satan tempts you

  730. with the very word of God?

  731. With your very trust in God?

  732. There are two ways.

  733. There's the way

  734. that Jesus responded

  735. with humility.

  736. There's an alternate way.

  737. And you could call it

  738. the Christian bookstore response.

  739. And as I say it,

  740. some of you know

  741. what I'm talking about.

  742. The Christian bookstore response

  743. where you go into

  744. a Christian bookstore

  745. and if you haven't been

  746. on your guard

  747. as you walk into

  748. the Christian bookstore,

  749. I will suggest to you

  750. you need to be more discerning

  751. than when you walk

  752. into a secular bookstore

  753. when you look

  754. at the books on the shelves

  755. in your Christian bookstore

  756. because in the secular bookstore

  757. they're not promising you

  758. to enrich your faith,

  759. to claim the promises of God.

  760. The Christian bookstore is.

  761. So you have to be careful.

  762. You have to be wary

  763. what you select

  764. because there are publishers

  765. who have made a lot of money

  766. in recent decades

  767. on Psalm 91.

  768. On Psalm 91

  769. because they claim

  770. that you,

  771. to receive God's blessing,

  772. have to show boldness of faith.

  773. Your faith has to be bold

  774. so that you can receive

  775. God's blessing.

  776. The Christian bookstore response

  777. says you will trample

  778. on the line and the adder

  779. as the psalm promises

  780. if you just have bold faith.

  781. It's a health and wealth message

  782. that says if you step out

  783. in boldness,

  784. if you make the leap,

  785. God will move your mountain.

  786. He will surely protect you.

  787. Not that there isn't a place

  788. for boldness

  789. in the Christian life.

  790. There is.

  791. But that's not what

  792. the Lord prizes

  793. and that's not what Jesus does

  794. as he follows his Father.

  795. It isn't boldness

  796. for boldness' sake.

  797. It's patience

  798. and humble obedience.

  799. The error that the health

  800. and wealth message

  801. that you'll find

  802. in the Christian bookstore makes

  803. is that it puts your acts of faith

  804. as the condition,

  805. the first condition

  806. for God to be faithful to you.

  807. It puts your acts of faith

  808. as the condition

  809. for God to be faithful to you.

  810. The Christian bookstore response

  811. when it quotes Psalm 91

  812. says,

  813. do you want to receive

  814. God's blessing?

  815. If you were at the pinnacle

  816. of the temple

  817. and Satan tempts you,

  818. do you want to receive

  819. God's blessing?

  820. Jump.

  821. That's exactly not

  822. what Jesus does,

  823. is it?

  824. He doesn't jump.

  825. He doesn't make

  826. a bold declaration

  827. of his faith

  828. in order to receive

  829. God's protection.

  830. Jesus' response

  831. is from Deuteronomy 6,

    Deuteronomy 6:16

  832. verse 16.

  833. You shall not put

  834. the Lord your God

  835. to the test.

  836. God didn't require

  837. of Jesus

  838. spectacular demonstrations

  839. of faith

  840. in order to be approved

  841. by him,

  842. in order to pass the test.

  843. And God doesn't require

  844. of you

  845. spectacular demonstrations

  846. of faith

  847. to receive his blessing,

  848. to be approved by him.

  849. You're not saved

  850. by the strength

  851. of your belief.

  852. You're saved

  853. by the strength

  854. of God's faithfulness.

  855. His faithfulness,

  856. his strength,

  857. is what sustains you.

  858. You just need

  859. to be humble

  860. and patiently

  861. await

  862. for his power

  863. to be made known in you.

  864. There is a place

  865. for boldness

  866. with discernment,

  867. but patience

  868. and obedience

  869. that lets God

  870. provide

  871. is prized higher.

  872. That's what passed

  873. the test

  874. for Jesus.

  875. Patience

  876. and humble obedience

  877. that trusts

  878. in God's providence.

  879. Jesus didn't ask God

  880. to prove himself

  881. faithful to him.

  882. Jesus just trusted him.

  883. The third temptation

  884. then starts

  885. in verse 8

  886. where Satan

  887. gaining nothing

  888. so far,

  889. gaining nothing

  890. as he tries

  891. to tempt Jesus

  892. with the desires

  893. of the flesh

  894. and then he tries

  895. to test Jesus

  896. with even his trust

  897. in God.

  898. Satan doubles down

  899. now.

  900. He's not being subtle.

  901. He's now just

  902. demanding worship.

  903. Verse 8 he begins,

  904. Again,

  905. the devil took him

  906. to a very high mountain

  907. and showed him

  908. all the kingdoms

  909. of the world

  910. in their glory.

  911. And he said to him,

  912. All these I will give you

  913. if you will fall down

  914. and worship me.

  915. All the kingdoms

  916. of the world

  917. is what Satan promises.

  918. And if you look

  919. at what Jesus did,

  920. what he came to do

  921. on earth,

  922. Jesus came for all

  923. the kingdoms of the world.

  924. Jesus came for that

  925. very thing,

  926. to gather from all

  927. the nations his elect

  928. from every kingdom

  929. on earth.

  930. Jesus wanted

  931. all the kingdoms

  932. of the world.

  933. Satan was offering

  934. it to him.

  935. And Satan's offer

  936. was in all vain.

  937. The scripture even

  938. tells us in Ephesians 2

  939. that Satan does have

  940. these kingdoms

  941. in a sense.

  942. He is the prince

  943. over the power

  944. of the air.

  945. That's what Ephesians

  946. 2 says.

  947. Not that Satan owns

  948. them in an ultimate sense,

  949. but Satan's power

  950. is over them.

  951. Satan had that power

  952. to hand over

  953. to Jesus

  954. the kingdoms

  955. of the world

  956. by passing the cross.

  957. So was Jesus

  958. vulnerable to this?

  959. Did Jesus want

  960. all the kingdoms

  961. of the world?

  962. Yes.

  963. Was he tempted

  964. to worship Satan

  965. in order to achieve it?

  966. No.

  967. Not if he was

  968. the one who was

  969. very God,

  970. the Son of God,

  971. the perfect holy God

  972. and perfect righteous man.

  973. This was not

  974. a temptation for Christ.

  975. That is why

  976. he's our Savior

  977. because he is faithful

  978. and he's holy.

  979. He has the power

  980. of God

  981. that sustains

  982. human nature

  983. when it's tempted.

  984. Jesus' response

  985. starts in verse 10.

  986. Then, Jesus said to him,

  987. Be gone, Satan,

  988. for it is written,

  989. You shall worship

  990. the Lord your God

  991. and him only

  992. you shall serve.

  993. Then, verse 11,

  994. the devil left him

  995. and behold,

  996. angels came

  997. and were ministering

  998. to him.

  999. So in this last

  1000. couplet of verses,

  1001. Matthew,

  1002. the author of Scripture

  1003. here,

  1004. shows us kind of

1005. the twist in the plot.

  1006. At the words,

  1007. Be gone,

  1008. what happens?

  1009. Satan just leaves.

  1010. At the words,

  1011. Be gone,

  1012. he's gone.

1013. So what does it tell you

  1014. when you see

1015. the end of the story

  1016. and it becomes apparent

1017. that Christ had the power

  1018. to dismiss Satan

  1019. at any point,

1020. any point in his temptation?

  1021. Christ had sovereign control

  1022. over Satan

  1023. the whole time.

  1024. I think it was R.C. Sproul

  1025. who said,

  1026. Satan is God's Satan.

  1027. Satan is never

  1028. out of control.

  1029. Satan is always

  1030. within the domain

  1031. and the command

  1032. of God

  1033. because God

  1034. is sovereign

  1035. over everything.

  1036. And Christ himself

1037. as the Son of God

  1038. was sovereign

  1039. over Satan

  1040. the whole time.

  1041. All of these temptations

  1042. then,

  1043. Christ endured

  1044. willingly

  1045. and Christ endured

  1046. purposefully.

1047. This was not a threat

  1048. that Satan brought

  1049. to Jesus unawares.

1050. This was what Jesus did,

1051. being led by the Spirit

1052. in order to be tested.

1053. Not that he would be tempted,

1054. but that he would be proven,

  1055. proven righteous.

  1056. They were not threats

  1057. to his holiness.

  1058. Satan,

  1059. in his devices,

  1060. in his temptations,

  1061. Satan as always

  1062. was aiding God's purpose

  1063. as he acted.

  1064. Because these temptations

  1065. were God's very purpose

  1066. to vindicate his Son.

  1067. And because

  1068. the temptation

  1069. in the wilderness

  1070. was a recapitulation

  1071. of Israel's failure,

  1072. this proof of obedience

  1073. was Jesus' very opportunity

  1074. to prove your faithfulness,

  1075. to enable your faithfulness,

  1076. to vindicate you

  1077. as the one

1078. who would be in Christ,

  1079. who would stand

  1080. under Christ

  1081. as your head.

  1082. It was the opportunity

  1083. for the Lord

  1084. to vindicate his Son

  1085. and for Christ

  1086. to vindicate us

  1087. from the accusations

  1088. of the devil.

  1089. And his victory

  1090. over temptation

  1091. did something else.

1092. Because the Son of God

  1093. was tempted

  1094. in his utter weakness

1095. in his most desperate state,

  1096. God has sympathy

  1097. with your every weakness.

1098. This is what we read earlier

  1099. with our catechism,

  1100. Hebrews chapter 4,

    Hebrews 4:15–16

  1101. verses 15 to 16.

  1102. The word says,

1103. For we do not have

  1104. a high priest

  1105. who is unable

  1106. to sympathize

  1107. with our weaknesses,

1108. but one who in every respect

  1109. has been tempted

  1110. as we are,

  1111. yet without sin.

  1112. Let us then

  1113. with confidence

  1114. draw near

1115. to the throne of grace,

1116. that we may receive mercy

  1117. and find grace

  1118. in time of need.

  1119. Jesus took the experience

  1120. of the temptation

  1121. in the wilderness,

  1122. and when he died

  1123. and when he ascended,

1124. he carried it up with him.

  1125. Where?

1126. To the right hand of God,

  1127. to the Father,

1128. where he intercedes for you.

  1129. He became your advocate,

  1130. your intercessor,

1131. as he is at the right hand

  1132. of the Father

  1133. interceding for you.

  1134. The hymn

  1135. that we'll sing later

  1136. puts it this way.

  1137. When we sing

  1138. before the throne

  1139. of God above,

  1140. the second verse says,

  1141. When Satan tempts me

  1142. to despair

  1143. and tells me

  1144. of the guilt within,

  1145. upward I look

  1146. and see him there

  1147. who made an end

  1148. to all my sin.

  1149. That's where we look

  1150. when we're tempted.

  1151. That's where the Christian

  1152. finds support

  1153. when he is tempted

  1154. because we have

1155. not just the Holy Spirit,

1156. but we have Christ himself

  1157. pleading with us

  1158. before the Father,

  1159. Christ who sympathizes

  1160. with our weaknesses.

  1161. And you,

  1162. who are left

  1163. with your mortal bodies

  1164. here on earth,

1165. are weak in the face of sin

  1166. because your heart

  1167. remains with you.

1168. Jesus had no sinful desire,

  1169. but that doesn't mean

  1170. he didn't know weakness.

  1171. He knew weakness,

  1172. and he knew it

  1173. better than you do.

  1174. And furthermore,

  1175. he knows you.

1176. He knows what you go through.

1177. He knows how you're tempted

1178. because he was tempted himself.

  1179. He knows your weaknesses,

1180. and he sympathizes with them

1181. because weakness was his also.

  1182. He knows weakness

  1183. better than you do.

1184. He was at his very limit

  1185. when he trusted

  1186. his Father to provide.

1187. And God will not allow you

  1188. beyond your limits

1189. because he has in mind

  1190. to provide.

  1191. He has in mind

  1192. to sustain his saints

  1193. with his Spirit,

1194. with all the physical needs

  1195. that you require,

1196. and with the spiritual needs

  1197. that he supplies daily

  1198. with the Holy Spirit.

1199. The sympathy of your Lord

  1200. comes about

  1201. because he endured

  1202. every weakness of yours

  1203. and more,

  1204. yet was without sin.

1205. We call this divine sympathy,

  1206. the sympathy that resides

1207. at the right hand of God.

1208. And this sympathy isn't the,

1209. oh, I feel so sorry for you,

  1210. sympathy.

  1211. That's not what

1212. the author of Hebrews means

1213. when it talks about sympathy.

  1214. It means sympathy

1215. that has power for you,

1216. sympathy that intercedes for you

  1217. because in heaven

1218. you have Christ interceding for you

  1219. before the Father.

  1220. On earth you have

1221. the Holy Spirit interceding for you

  1222. in your heart,

  1223. offering up prayers

1224. that are worthy to God,

1225. prayers that will be answered.

1226. And it's for that reason

1227. that you can have confidence

  1228. to receive God's help

1229. in your time of need

  1230. because now

1231. you can pray in Jesus' name.

  1232. And when you pray

  1233. in Jesus' name,

  1234. it's not required

1235. that you have the words

  1236. to explain

  1237. what it is

  1238. that you're going through,

  1239. the temptation

  1240. that you're suffering,

1241. the needs that you have.

1242. You don't have to have

1243. the words to explain it

  1244. because he knows,

  1245. because he sympathizes,

1246. because he has the words

  1247. that can be expressed

  1248. with groanings

  1249. too deep for words

  1250. what it is

  1251. that you need.

  1252. And he brings it

  1253. before the Father

  1254. where his prayers

  1255. are always answered.

  1256. He knows

  1257. there will be occasions

  1258. when you give in

  1259. to temptation

  1260. where Christ didn't,

1261. but at the same time,

  1262. Christ and the Father

1263. do not look upon you

  1264. as one who fell

  1265. into temptation.

1266. The Father looks upon you

  1267. as the one

  1268. who endured temptation

  1269. as Christ did

  1270. because you're in Christ.

1271. because Christ is your head

  1272. and he was victorious

  1273. over temptation.

  1274. No fall of yours

  1275. into temptation

  1276. can change the Father's

  1277. attitude toward you

1278. because as Romans told us,

  1279. the righteous requirement

  1280. of the law

  1281. has been fulfilled.

  1282. There's nothing else

1283. that remains to be fulfilled.

  1284. Because of Christ,

1285. the Father looks upon you

1286. always as he does Christ

1287. as one who will endure

  1288. to the end.

  1289. Thanks be to God.

  1290. Let's pray.

  1291. Father, we thank you

  1292. for the word

1293. you spoke to us today.

  1294. We thank you

  1295. for the assurance

1296. that though we suffer temptation

  1297. and fall into temptation

  1298. that your son

  1299. suffered everything

  1300. yet was without sin

  1301. so that we

  1302. can have confidence

  1303. through him

  1304. to come before you

  1305. to receive grace

1306. in our time of need.

  1307. May this knowledge

1308. make us that much more eager

  1309. to repent

  1310. knowing our sympathetic

  1311. advocate before you.

  1312. We praise you

1313. for the power you showed

  1314. in weakness

1315. that as it proved Christ

  1316. as the perfect Savior,

1317. it will also make us

  1318. perfect as well.

  1319. We give you thanks

  1320. in Christ's name.

  1321. Amen.
