  1. Good morning. My name is Matthew Capone, and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church,

  2. and it's my joy to bring God's word to you today.

  3. A special welcome if you're new or visiting with us.

  4. We're glad that you're here, and we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats,

  5. but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  6. And as we follow Jesus together, we become convinced that there's no one so good.

  7. They don't need God's grace, and no one's so bad that they can't have it.

  8. And that's why we come back week after week to hear what God has to say to us in his word.

  9. We're continuing our study on the book of 2 Peter, and you'll remember that the book of 2 Peter

  10. is a letter written by a man named Peter in the 60s A.D. to a church somewhere in the Roman Empire.

  11. And Peter writes this letter because he has one goal, one desire. He wants these people to grow.

  12. We find out in the first few verses of the book that he wants grace and peace to be multiplied to them

  13. in the knowledge of Jesus Christ.

  14. And then we find out in the very last verse, chapter 3, verse 18,

  15. that he commands them to grow in the grace and knowledge of their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

  16. And this growth has those two components to it.

  17. He wants them to grow in grace, and he also wants them to grow in knowledge.

  18. We looked before in verses 1 through 7.

  19. We saw that God uses his word as an instrument of his power to play a song of obedience in our lives.

  20. And last week, we looked at what that song of obedience was, and we saw that it was things like this,

  21. knowledge, self-control, steadfastness, brotherly affection, love.

  22. We saw at the very end that our obedience is a standing ovation.

  23. It's our response to God's grace in Jesus Christ, that his grace comes first, followed by our obedience.

  24. We're going to continue that discussion of obedience this morning,

  25. and we're going to ask, as I mentioned before, the question of what role our obedience plays in our salvation.

  26. What role does our obedience play in our salvation?

  27. We're told different things in Scripture.

  28. In Ephesians, chapter 2, verses 8 and 9, one of our most precious verses as Christians,

    Ephesians 2:8

  29. we know that our salvation is by grace through faith alone.

  30. So there's nothing that we do that can add to it.

  31. It's through what Jesus did, not what we do.

  32. And yet we're also told in the book of James, chapter 2, that faith without works is dead.

    James 2 chapter mention

  33. And so there is some sort of relationship between faith and works.

  34. What do we do?

  35. Is it enough to become a Christian too just?

  36. As some people say, say a prayer.

  37. Does that make us a Christian?

  38. And how do we increase and grow in confidence in our faith?

  39. How do we know that we belong to Jesus Christ, what some people refer to as assurance?

  40. What is the relationship between our obedience and our salvation?

  41. It's with that question that we turn now to 2 Peter, chapter 1.

    2 Peter 1 chapter mention

  42. We're going to start in verse 8.

  43. And I invite you to turn there with me now, either near the end of your worship guide or in your Bible or on your phone.

  44. No matter where you turn, remember that this is God's Word.

  45. And God tells us that his Word is more precious than gold, even the finest gold,

  46. and that it is sweeter than honey, even honey that comes straight from the honeycomb.

  47. And so that's why we read now, starting at verse 8.

  48. For if these qualities are yours and are increasing, they keep you from being ineffective or unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  49. For whoever lacks these qualities is so nearsighted that he is blind, having forgotten that he was cleansed from his former sins.

  50. Therefore, brothers, be all the more diligent to confirm your calling and election.

  51. For if you practice these qualities, you will never fall.

  52. For in this way there will be richly provided for you an entrance into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

  53. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's Word.

  54. Our Father in heaven, we thank you again for your Word that you've provided to us.

  55. We know that you use knowledge to grow us up in grace and in our faith.

  56. We ask that you would do that this morning, that you would use these words by the power of your Spirit,

  57. and you would honor your promise that your Word does not return to you void,

  58. but instead it accomplishes everything you mean for it to.

  59. And so we ask that you would do that this morning, that you would accomplish in our lives great encouragement from your provision in Jesus Christ,

  60. and great challenge that our response to it would be one of obedience.

  61. We ask these things grateful that we don't have to earn them or deserve them, but we can ask them in Jesus' name.

  62. Amen.

  63. Amen.

  64. I have mentioned to you before that I was born in Texas,

  65. and shortly after that my family moved to Southern Maryland right outside Washington, D.C.,

  66. and it was right after we moved and my parents bought a house that my grandfather also was moving and he needed to downsize.

  67. And so he passed off many of his things that he'd accumulated over his life to his sons.

  68. And so my father, as one of his sons, was able to receive some of these things,

  69. and one of the things he received was a Troy-built tiller,

  70. which, of course, is what you use if you're going to till up the ground to plant a garden.

  71. Now, my dad aspired to be something of a green thumb, loved the earth,

  72. and so in our backyard of the house that he'd just bought, he began to create this garden.

  73. He tilled up the soil and set out a portion.

  74. Now, at the same time, I was very young at this point.

  75. I was probably three, four, five years old.

  76. It was around the time my parents decided it was time to give us an allowance,

  77. and so I think it was something like a dollar a week.

  78. Now, they also required certain things of us.

  79. We had probably peanut butter jars with holes cut in the top,

  80. and of this dollar, we had to give certain things 10% to tithe,

  81. so we took our dimes to church, and we also had to save 10%,

  82. so we had to put a dime in the savings.

  83. But we had some money to spend on very exciting things like flashlights

  84. and Toy Army soldiers from Walmart,

  85. and we also had money potentially to spend on the garden,

  86. and we would receive the Burpee Seed Catalog.

  87. Now, some of you are too young to know this, understand this,

  88. but it used to be a time when you didn't order things on the Internet.

  89. You would send in these cards, right, from magazines with money or a check,

  90. of course, things from ancient times.

  91. And so we would go through the catalog,

  92. and I, as a young child, was very excited

  93. because I found something in this Burpee Seed Catalog that appealed to me.

  94. Now, there are all sorts of things that adults would find interesting.

  95. However, they featured a special deal.

  96. You could buy a mystery pack of seeds.

  97. And these, I assume, were the seeds that were swept off the floor, right,

  98. and they just put them in a bag.

  99. You had no idea what was in the pack.

  100. What was most exciting, however,

  101. was that the mystery pack of seeds was a grand total of one cent.

  102. And so I did not have a lot of money,

  103. but this was in the budget.

  104. And so I gave my one penny to my dad.

  105. It was a great investment.

  106. And he taped it with Scotch tape to the order form that he was sending in.

  107. And then I waited excitedly, right,

  108. as a young child for my mystery pack of seeds to come in the mail.

  109. And as a young child, right, I did not know.

  110. I didn't know how to recognize different seeds.

  111. I didn't know what seed was going to be what sort of plant.

  112. And so my dad gave me a little portion of the garden

  113. where I got to spread my mystery seeds out.

  114. And I had to wait, right, to find out what I had.

  115. I had to wait until there was some sort of growth

  116. to know what sort of plants I had because it was a mystery.

  117. And so the point is this.

  118. It is not until there's growth

  119. that you know what you're dealing with.

  120. It is not until there's growth that you know

  121. what you're dealing with.

  122. The fruit shows you

  123. what kind of plant you have.

  124. It's the fruit

  125. that shows you

  126. what kind of plant you have.

  127. That's what we see here in verse 10.

  128. We're told,

  129. Be all the more diligent to confirm

  130. your calling and election.

  131. Now this sounds like a contradiction, right?

  132. Calling and election.

  133. That's talking about the fact

  134. that God is the one who chooses.

  135. So how can we confirm someone else's choice?

  136. Well, what he's telling us

  137. is that the fruit

  138. is what reveals

  139. what kind of plant we are.

  140. Peter is encouraging

  141. these people

  142. to pursue obedience and holiness.

  143. Remember, we saw that last week

  144. in verse 5.

  145. We were told to make

  146. every effort

  147. to supplement our faith

  148. with all of these things.

  149. Virtue, knowledge,

  150. self-control, steadfastness.

  151. Fruit

  152. does not make us

  153. Christians.

  154. Fruit

  155. reveals

  156. that we are Christians.

  157. Fruit does not

  158. make us Christians.

  159. It reveals

  160. that we are Christians.

  161. Faith has

  162. fruit.

  163. Faith

  164. always leads

  165. to fruit.

  166. And so we saw

  167. last week

  168. pursue obedience

  169. as a response

  170. to God's grace, right?

  171. I pointed out to you

  172. in verse 5,

  173. for this reason,

  174. for everything

  175. that God has done

  176. for you in Jesus Christ,

  177. pursue obedience.

  178. We now see

  179. a second reason.

  180. Pursue obedience

  181. to grow

  182. in confidence

  183. in your faith.

  184. faith.

  185. You're going to grow

  186. in joy

  187. and in confidence

  188. as you see

  189. the fruit

  190. of God's work

  191. in your life.

  192. And so it looks

  193. something like this,

  194. right?

  195. Maybe you're someone

  196. who struggles

  197. with anger

  198. and you remember

  199. that time

  200. several years ago

  201. you were so angry

  202. that you punched

  203. a hole in the wall

  204. and then you had

  205. to go and get

  206. the drywall replaced.

  207. And you've looked

  208. over time

  209. and you see

  210. how you've grown

  211. since then.

  212. You've had to seek

  213. help from other Christians.

  214. You've repented

  215. of that sin.

  216. You've asked

  217. for accountability.

  218. You've looked

  219. at the ways

  220. in which God

  221. provides in His word

  222. that He will bring justice

  223. so you don't have to.

  224. God will be with you.

  225. And so now

  226. you still struggle

  227. with your anger, right?

  228. And you don't punch

  229. holes in the wall anymore.

  230. And so you can say this,

  231. wow, God is really

  232. at work in my life.

  233. He is doing something.

  234. New things are starting

  235. to spring up.

  236. Maybe you're someone

  237. who struggles

  238. with self-righteousness.

  239. Your tendency

  240. is to see

  241. the speck

  242. in someone else's eye

  243. and ignore

  244. the log

  245. in your own eye.

  246. And you love

  247. talking about

  248. other people's failures.

  249. And then you realize

  250. that's the way

  251. that you cope

  252. with covering over

  253. your own shame.

  254. And as you grow

  255. in understanding

  256. the gospel,

  257. you realize

  258. that Jesus

  259. is the one

  260. who covers your shame.

  261. And so you don't

  262. have to do it

  263. by repeating

  264. others' shame.

  265. You have new humility.

  266. You talk to others

  267. about your shame

  268. rather than

  269. about others

  270. and their shame.

  271. And so you look back

  272. and you say,

  273. wow,

  274. God really is

  275. at work in my life.

  276. God really is

  277. doing something.

  278. New things

  279. are springing up.

  280. You have joy

  281. that comes from that,

  282. right?

  283. Maybe you're struggling

  284. with an addiction.

  285. You finally worked up

  286. the courage

  287. and the humility

  288. to ask for help.

  289. You've not made it

  290. all the way,

  291. but you've made it

  292. to 30 days sober.

  293. Wow,

  294. God really is

  295. at work.

  296. God really is

  297. doing something

  298. in my life.

  299. New things

  300. really are

  301. springing up.

  302. Maybe you're someone

  303. who loves money

  304. and you resent

  305. ever having

  306. to give it away.

  307. You resent

  308. the idea

  309. that God

  310. would make a claim

  311. on it

  312. or other people

  313. who are in need

  314. would need it.

  315. but then slowly,

  316. little by little,

  317. you begin to realize

  318. that God

  319. is the one

  320. who cares for you

  321. and protects you.

  322. And you haven't

  323. let your grip

  324. off all the way,

  325. but it's loosening.

  326. You find yourself

  327. one day

  328. giving something

  329. and not resenting it.

  330. And you're able

  331. to say,

  332. wow,

  333. God really is

  334. at work in my life.

  335. He is

  336. doing something.

  337. New things

  338. are springing up.

  339. That's the incentive

  340. Peter is giving

  341. these people here

  342. that they,

  343. as they confirm

  344. their calling

  345. and election,

  346. they are going

  347. to have the joy

  348. and confidence

  349. that comes

  350. from seeing God

  351. at work

  352. in their lives.

  353. They know

  354. God's power

  355. in a way

  356. they did not

  357. know it before.

  358. They know the truth

  359. of 2 Corinthians 5,

    2 Corinthians 5:17

  360. verse 17,

  361. that if we are

  362. in Christ,

  363. we are a new creation.

  364. The old

  365. has passed away,

  366. the new

  367. has come.

  368. That's what

  369. it means

  370. to make their

  371. calling

  372. and election

  373. sure

  374. to confirm it.

  375. They are

  376. increasing

  377. in their

  378. confidence

  379. and their joy

  380. seeing the

  381. reality

  382. of their faith,

  383. seeing that

  384. it's a genuine

  385. faith because

  386. it leads

  387. to something.

  388. God hasn't

  389. just saved

  390. them,

  391. brothers and

  392. sisters.

  393. He has not

  394. just saved

  395. us from

  396. sin,

  397. but He is

  398. at work

  399. in our

  400. lives,

  401. removing,

  402. sanctifying,

  403. creating

  404. holiness

  405. in us.

  406. And so

  407. we don't

  408. reach perfection

  409. now,

  410. but we

  411. grow.

  412. Plants

  413. grow slowly,

  414. right?

  415. They don't

  416. just spring

  417. from seeds.

  418. If you want

  419. to see a

  420. plant grow

  421. immediately,

  422. you'll have

  423. to watch

  424. a time-lapse

  425. video.

  426. And yet,

  427. there's

  428. growth.

  429. And so

  430. Peter continues

  431. to tell us

  432. the same

  433. thing he

  434. told us

  435. last week.

  436. In verse

  437. five,

  438. last week

  439. he told us

  440. make every

  441. effort.

  442. We talked

  443. about the

  444. Olympic

  445. athletes,

  446. right?

  447. It's because

  448. of their

  449. love for

  450. the sport

  451. that they

  452. work so

  453. hard.

  454. Verse

  455. ten,

  456. here we

  457. see the

  458. same thing.

  459. Be all

  460. the more

  461. diligent.

  462. Be zealous

  463. for these

  464. things,

  465. right?

  466. I've given

  467. you some

  468. examples of

  469. the weapons

  470. of war

  471. that we

  472. use as

  473. God's

  474. at work

  475. in our

  476. lives.

  477. We have

  478. confession

  479. and repentance.

  480. We have

  481. the help

  482. of other

  483. believers

  484. as they

  485. walk with

  486. us.

  487. We have

  488. the power

  489. of God's

  490. word as

  491. he's at

  492. work in

  493. our lives.

  494. We have

  495. this community

  496. that's before

  497. us.

  498. Some of you

  499. in this

  500. congregation

  501. have experienced

  502. that.

  503. You've

  504. experienced

  505. that in

  506. life groups

  507. and Bible

  508. studies.

  509. You've

  510. gone to

  511. the Band

  512. of Brothers

  513. study at

  514. 7 a.m.

  515. on Saturdays.

  516. You've

  517. taken the

  518. risk of

  519. sharing

  520. things with

  521. other men

  522. and you

  523. have seen

  524. the way

  525. that God

  526. is at

  527. work.

  528. He has

  529. used that

  530. in powerful

  531. ways.

  532. I mention

  533. that by the

  534. way because

  535. God is at

  536. work in a

  537. powerful way

  538. right now in

  539. our men's

  540. Bible study

  541. on Saturdays.

  542. I've been

  543. hearing stories

  544. about the

  545. way that God

  546. is changing

  547. lives and

  548. bringing people

  549. to new

  550. places in

  551. their walk

  552. with him

  553. as they

  554. are more

  555. and more

  556. diligent

  557. right?

  558. Be all

  559. the more

  560. diligent to

  561. confirm your

  562. calling and

  563. election.

  564. God has

  565. given us

  566. the tools.

  567. He is the

  568. one at work

  569. and so we

  570. pursue what

  571. he's presented

  572. to us.

  573. There is a

  574. joy as I

  575. mentioned before

  576. that comes

  577. when you see

  578. that God's

  579. at work.

  580. work.

  581. I mentioned

  582. a couple

  583. weeks ago

  584. that I was

  585. preparing for

  586. a hike.

  587. James and

  588. I, James

  589. Dunlap and

  590. I went on

  591. that hike

  592. on Friday

  593. and we

  594. had to be

  595. very diligent

  596. and in fact

  597. we had to

  598. make every

  599. effort because

  600. we decided

  601. we were

  602. going to

  603. hike up

  604. Lodgett

  605. Peak which

  606. is just

  607. west of

  608. the Air

  609. Force Academy

  610. and we

  611. did this

  612. after we

  613. had already

  614. hiked

  615. many miles

  616. and I

  617. will tell

  618. you it

  619. was very

  620. painful.

  621. And

  622. when we

  623. got to

  624. the top

  625. we did

  626. not regret

  627. what had

  628. come before.

  629. There was

  630. a joy

  631. that came

  632. from having

  633. reached that

  634. point.

  635. And we

  636. didn't come

  637. to the top

  638. at the

  639. beginning,

  640. right?

  641. We're slowly

  642. working step

  643. by step

  644. by step

  645. each step

  646. just as

  647. painful as

  648. the one

  649. before.

  650. And we

  651. were able

  652. to get

  653. to the

  654. top

  655. and see

  656. the view.

  657. Peter

  658. is exhorting

  659. these people

  660. to work

  661. to get

  662. to the

  663. top

  664. and see

  665. the view

  666. of everything

  667. that God

  668. has provided

  669. for his

  670. people in

  671. his word

  672. through their

  673. obedience.

  674. And so

  675. they should

  676. be all

  677. the more

  678. diligent.

  679. They are

  680. making

  681. every effort.

  682. There's an

  683. encouragement

  684. here then

  685. but there

  686. is also

  687. a warning.

  688. We're told

  689. in verse 10

  690. to be all

  691. the more

  692. diligent to

  693. confirm

  694. our

  695. calling

  696. and election

  697. and we're

  698. told if

  699. we do

  700. these things

  701. you will

  702. never fall.

  703. Now when we

  704. come to the

  705. word fall

  706. in the Bible

  707. there's two

  708. different meanings

  709. that it has.

  710. Sometimes when

  711. writers of the

  712. Bible talk

  713. about falling

  714. they're talking

  715. simply about

  716. a Christian

  717. sinning.

  718. Sometimes when

  719. they talk

  720. about falling

  721. they're talking

  722. about what

  723. we would

  724. call apostasy.

  725. They're talking

  726. about someone

  727. abandoning

  728. Christianity

  729. leaving the

  730. faith.

  731. Here Peter

  732. is talking

  733. about the

  734. second one.

  735. He is talking

  736. about someone

  737. abandoning the

  738. faith.

  739. Leaving

  740. Christianity

  741. behind.

  742. Deciding

  743. God is not

  744. for them.

  745. Now that is

  746. not immediately

  747. clear in

  748. verse 10

  749. but one of

  750. our principles

  751. of biblical

  752. interpretation

  753. is that we

  754. use clear

  755. passages to

  756. interpret

  757. unclear

  758. passages.

  759. And so we're

  760. going to see

  761. in chapter 2

  762. when we talk

  763. about the

  764. false teachers

  765. that we are

  766. talking about

  767. people who

  768. claim to be

  769. Christians but

  770. are not.

  771. We're going to

  772. see that especially

  773. in verses 20 and

  774. 21.

  775. And in

  776. verse 11

  777. in this

  778. passage it

  779. is also

  780. clarified for

  781. us.

  782. We're told

  783. confirming their

  784. election there

  785. will be richly

  786. provided for

  787. you an

  788. entrance into

  789. the eternal

  790. kingdom of

  791. our Lord and

  792. Savior Jesus

  793. Christ.

  794. By

  795. implication

  796. logically what's

  797. the opposite

  798. of that?

  799. Not

  800. receiving an

  801. entrance into

  802. the eternal

  803. kingdom of

  804. our Lord and

  805. Savior Jesus

  806. Christ.

  807. And so

  808. Peter is

  809. telling us

  810. there are

  811. people who

  812. seem to be

  813. Christians on

  814. the outside

  815. but actually

  816. do not have

  817. faith in

  818. Jesus Christ.

  819. These are the

  820. same people we're

  821. told about in

  822. verses 8 and

  823. 9.

  824. We want to be

  825. verse 8.

  826. We want to

  827. stay far away

  828. from being

  829. ineffective or

  830. unfruitful.

  831. Why?

  832. Because verse 9

  833. whoever lacks

  834. these qualities is

  835. so nearsighted that

  836. he is blind

  837. having forgotten

  838. that he was

  839. cleansed from

  840. his former

  841. sins.

  842. Again Peter is

  843. talking about

  844. people who

  845. claim to be

  846. Christians but

  847. actually are

  848. not.

  849. Now he says

  850. that they were

  851. cleansed.

  852. This is probably

  853. a reference here

  854. to baptism.

  855. In other words

  856. Peter is saying

  857. there are people

  858. who have the

  859. sign of

  860. cleansing.

  861. They have been

  862. baptized.

  863. They do not

  864. live a life

  865. of cleansing.

  866. The box and

  867. the contents

  868. don't match.

  869. The most basic

  870. things about the

  871. gospel they don't

  872. understand.

  873. You could think

  874. about it this way.

  875. I could go to

  876. an army surplus

  877. store over on

  878. B Street and I

  879. could buy all

  880. the uniforms I

  881. want.

  882. I could dress

  883. up in those

  884. uniforms and I

  885. could walk

  886. around town.

  887. That does not

  888. make me a

  889. service member.

  890. I might appear

  891. to be in the

  892. military.

  893. I might fool

  894. some people.

  895. I have the

  896. appearance I

  897. have no

  898. substance.

  899. I have the

  900. appearance I

  901. have no

  902. substance.

  903. This is what

  904. Peter is saying

  905. about these

  906. people.

  907. They do not

  908. have lives that

  909. reflect the

  910. salvation of

  911. Jesus Christ.

  912. And so he's

  913. reminding us that

  914. obedience is a

  915. sign.

  916. Obedience

  917. contributes nothing

  918. to our salvation

  919. and it earns us

  920. nothing from God.

  921. And those who God

  922. saves will grow in

  923. obedience.

  924. Our obedience

  925. earns us nothing

  926. from God.

  927. it contributes

  928. in no way to

  929. our salvation.

  930. And those who

  931. are saved will

  932. grow in

  933. obedience.

  934. And so we have

  935. an encouragement

  936. here to

  937. confirm our

  938. belonging to

  939. Jesus Christ

  940. through our

  941. obedience.

  942. We also have a

  943. serious warning.

  944. It is a call

  945. to self

  946. examination.

  947. Are you

  948. a Christian?

  949. Do you

  950. see signs

  951. of God

  952. being at

  953. work in

  954. your life?

  955. Am I

  956. growing?

  957. Is there

  958. fruit?

  959. Right?

  960. Remember,

  961. it is the

  962. fruit that

  963. shows you

  964. what kind of

  965. plant you

  966. have.

  967. It is not

  968. until there's

  969. growth that

  970. you know what

  971. you're dealing

  972. with.

  973. And so I'll

  974. put it this

  975. way.

  976. If you do

  977. not desire

  978. and seek

  979. to grow

  980. in holiness,

  981. you should

  982. not expect

  983. verse 11

  984. to have an

  985. entrance into

  986. the eternal

  987. kingdom of

  988. our Lord

  989. and Savior

  990. Jesus Christ.

  991. It is

  992. possible to

  993. call yourself

  994. a Christian

  995. and yet it

  996. is clear by

  997. your behavior

  998. that you have

  999. no reason to

  1000. believe you

  1001. are.

  1002. God

  1003. will

  1004. be

  1005. to

  1006. God

  1007. to

  1008. look at

  1009. our lives

  1010. and ask

  1011. is there

  1012. fruit?

  1013. Not that

  1014. there's

  1015. perfection,

  1016. not that

  1017. we've

  1018. arrived,

  1019. but we

  1020. see God

  1021. at work

  1022. doing what

  1023. he has

  1024. promised

  1025. to do

  1026. for those

  1027. who have

  1028. faith in

  1029. him.

  1030. It is not

  1031. because salvation

  1032. is by works,

  1033. it isn't,

  1034. but because

  1035. those God

  1036. saves,

  1037. God

  1038. sanctifies.

  1039. Those God

  1040. saves,

  1041. he

  1042. sanctifies.

  1043. Hebrews

    Hebrews 12 chapter mention

  1044. chapter 12

  1045. tells us

  1046. this,

  1047. strive for

  1048. peace with

  1049. everyone

  1050. and for

  1051. the holiness

  1052. without

  1053. which no

  1054. one will

  1055. see the

  1056. Lord.

  1057. Holiness

  1058. is

  1059. necessary.

  1060. those God

  1061. saves,

  1062. he also

  1063. sanctifies.

  1064. If we

  1065. do not

  1066. see fruit

  1067. in our

  1068. lives,

  1069. it may

  1070. be a sign

  1071. to us

  1072. that we

  1073. are just

  1074. going

  1075. through the

  1076. motions.

  1077. It may

  1078. be a sign

  1079. to us

  1080. that we

  1081. have had

  1082. all the

  1083. words of

  1084. faith,

  1085. and it's

  1086. time for

  1087. us to

  1088. actually

  1089. embrace

  1090. faith,

  1091. actually

  1092. time for

  1093. us to

  1094. repent of

  1095. our sins,

  1096. to recognize

  1097. that there

  1098. are many

  1099. reasons people

  1100. are at the

  1101. church,

  1102. community,

  1103. fellowship,

  1104. access to

  1105. all sorts

  1106. of things,

  1107. but there

  1108. is only one

  1109. reason that

  1110. matters,

  1111. that we

  1112. acknowledge that

  1113. we are

  1114. sinners in

  1115. the sight of

  1116. God with

  1117. no hope

  1118. outside of

  1119. his mercy,

  1120. and that it

  1121. is only

  1122. through the

  1123. death and

  1124. resurrection of

  1125. Jesus Christ

  1126. that we

  1127. have any

  1128. hope.

  1129. There is

  1130. great

  1131. encouragement in

  1132. this passage,

  1133. and there

  1134. is great

  1135. challenge.

  1136. Are you

  1137. a Christian?

  1138. Chapter 2,

  1139. especially in

  1140. verses again 20

  1141. and 21,

  1142. we're going to

  1143. meet those who

  1144. claim to be

  1145. Christians but

  1146. are not,

  1147. and Peter is

  1148. going to detail

  1149. for us the

  1150. judgment that

  1151. they are going

  1152. to face.

  1153. when I was

  1154. ordained back

  1155. in 2018,

  1156. my parents

  1157. gave me this

  1158. calligraphy

  1159. print that

  1160. now hangs in

  1161. my office in

  1162. the back,

  1163. and at the

  1164. bottom it has

  1165. my full name

  1166. and then it

  1167. has the

  1168. date, I

  1169. think it's

  1170. May 20,

  1171. 2018, and

  1172. it has the

  1173. name of our

  1174. church.

  1175. And above

  1176. it there's a

  1177. drawing, and

  1178. it's of a

  1179. tree, and

  1180. within the

  1181. branches of

  1182. the tree are

  1183. written the

  1184. words of

  1185. John chapter

    John 15:5

  1186. 15, verse

  1187. 5.

  1188. I am the

  1189. vine, you

  1190. are the

  1191. branches,

  1192. whoever abides

  1193. in me and

  1194. I in him,

  1195. he it is that

  1196. bears much

  1197. fruit, for

  1198. apart from

  1199. me you can

  1200. do nothing.

  1201. And it's a

  1202. reminder to

  1203. me, right,

  1204. every time I'm

  1205. in my office,

  1206. that God is

  1207. the one who's

  1208. at work.

  1209. If we have

  1210. any hope of

  1211. growing in

  1212. obedience, it's

  1213. because of

  1214. Jesus.

  1215. He is the

  1216. vine, we

  1217. are the

  1218. branches.

  1219. So we

  1220. don't whip

  1221. up obedience,

  1222. we don't pull

  1223. ourselves up by

  1224. our bootstraps.

  1225. Instead, we

  1226. recognize God

  1227. is the one at

  1228. work in our

  1229. lives.

  1230. Remember, that's

  1231. the logic of

  1232. all of this.

  1233. We don't look

  1234. to our works to

  1235. see if we've

  1236. earned salvation,

  1237. we look to

  1238. our works because

  1239. those God

  1240. saves, he

  1241. sanctifies.

  1242. And so we

  1243. turn back again

  1244. and again to

  1245. that, that we

  1246. remember our

  1247. growth is a

  1248. product of God

  1249. as our source

  1250. and our life.

  1251. Jesus is the

  1252. vine, we are

  1253. only branches.

  1254. And so if we

  1255. are in him, we

  1256. can have tremendous

  1257. confidence and

  1258. hope.

  1259. Knowing that he

  1260. is giving us

  1261. everything that we

  1262. need to grow.

  1263. It's the vine that

  1264. shoots the water to

  1265. the branches.

  1266. It's the vine that

  1267. provides them with

  1268. the nutrients,

  1269. right?

  1270. If you cut the

  1271. vine, the branch

  1272. off from the

  1273. vine, what's

  1274. going to happen?

  1275. It's going to

  1276. die.

  1277. Leave it outside

  1278. in Colorado, it

  1279. won't be green

  1280. very long.

  1281. It is God who

  1282. gives us everything

  1283. we need for

  1284. obedience.

  1285. He is the one

  1286. who is at work.

  1287. And so we know

  1288. we cannot do

  1289. anything apart

  1290. from Christ.

  1291. If this church,

  1292. right, if we were

  1293. to experience a

  1294. major revival and

  1295. God were to pour

1296. his spirit out in a

  1297. special way and

  1298. people were pouring

1299. in and we were to

  1300. have three services,

  1301. four services,

  1302. because that's the

  1303. only way we could

  1304. fit everyone in.

  1305. And someone asked

  1306. us, how did it

  1307. happen?

  1308. What would we

  1309. say?

  1310. It would be wrong

  1311. for us to say,

  1312. wow, we had an

  1313. amazing strategy and

  1314. we are just so

  1315. smart.

  1316. No, God was at

  1317. work.

  1318. Praise his name.

  1319. We're not sure how

  1320. it happened, but he

  1321. in his power has

  1322. done a mighty work

  1323. in here.

  1324. He is the vine.

  1325. We are the

  1326. branches.

  1327. When you're walking

  1328. in the neighborhoods,

1329. when I go in the

  1330. neighborhoods and I

  1331. see a beautiful

  1332. flower garden, what

  1333. do I think?

  1334. Wow, those flowers

  1335. are so hardworking

  1336. and smart.

  1337. No, I think that

  1338. person who lives

  1339. there is such a

  1340. great gardener and

  1341. loves and cares for

  1342. that box of plants.

1343. God is the one at

  1344. work, not us.

  1345. He is the vine.

  1346. We are the branches.

  1347. We are doing

  1348. everything for his

  1349. honor and his

  1350. glory.

  1351. Remember when we

  1352. studied 1 Peter, I

  1353. told you this quote

  1354. from Corrie Ten Boom,

  1355. who was an amazingly

  1356. successful Christian

  1357. speaker and had many

  1358. people say many

  1359. wonderful things to

  1360. her.

1361. And so she said this,

  1362. when people come up

  1363. and give me a

  1364. compliment,

  1365. Corrie, that was a

  1366. good talk, or Corrie,

  1367. you were so brave.

1368. I take each remark as

1369. if it were a flower.

1370. At the end of each day,

1371. I lift up the bouquet of

  1372. flowers I have gathered

  1373. throughout the day and

  1374. say, here you are,

  1375. Lord.

1376. Lord, it is all yours.

  1377. Here you are, Lord.

1378. It is all yours because

1379. she knows that all the

1380. fruit in her life, any

1381. fruit in her life, is the

1382. product of what God has

1383. done, not what she has

  1384. done.

1385. And so there is no place

1386. in the Christian life for

  1387. patting ourselves on the

  1388. back.

1389. There is no place for

  1390. self-congratulation.

1391. There is no place for

  1392. beating our chests.

  1393. We do not praise

  1394. ourselves, but we praise

  1395. God.

1396. And so that's why we come

  1397. here week after week.

  1398. We are reminding ourselves

1399. that God is the one who

  1400. receives the glory.

1401. That's why we start our

  1402. service singing two hymns

  1403. of praise to God.

1404. That's why we end it

  1405. singing hymns of praise

  1406. to God.

  1407. We remind ourselves every

1408. week that we praise not

  1409. ourselves, but our great

  1410. God.

  1411. Worship protects us from

  1412. narcissism.

1413. God is the one at work,

1414. and he tells us in John

1415. 15 to abide in him.

1416. We abide in him first for

  1417. salvation, recognizing that

1418. we have no hope outside of

  1419. him.

1420. And we abide in him for the

  1421. rest of our lives.

  1422. Ongoing abiding.

  1423. Everything we've already

  1424. talked about.

  1425. Abiding in him through

  1426. prayer.

1427. Abiding in him in his word.

1428. Abiding in him as we gather

  1429. together with other

  1430. Christians.

1431. Abiding in him as we have

  1432. confession and repentance

  1433. in relationship.

1434. Trusting that he's the one

  1435. who is at work.

1436. That is the source of our

  1437. growth.

1438. And of course, abiding, right,

1439. is only for those who have

  1440. faith in Jesus Christ.

1441. There is only one way to be

1442. attached to the vine, and

  1443. that is through Jesus.

1444. It is through our faith and

1445. trust and confidence in him.

1446. And so as we ask this

  1447. question, are we actually

  1448. Christians?

1449. If the answer we come up with

1450. is we're not sure, if the

1451. answer is no, there is only

1452. one choice, one option, and

1453. that is to run to the only

  1454. vine.

1455. Jesus is our hope and our only

1456. hope in this world for any real

1457. and true growth and change.

1458. And so for those who have faith

1459. in him and those who do not, the

1460. call is always to Jesus Christ.

  1461. He is the vine.

  1462. We are the branches.

1463. Several years after my dad

1464. started the garden plot, he also

1465. decided he wanted to plant some

1466. apple trees and some peach trees

  1467. in our backyard.

1468. Now if you plant apple trees, you

1469. don't look for good fruit right

  1470. away.

1471. You need to wait several years.

1472. And so during this waiting time,

1473. of course my dad was not idle.

  1474. He was at work.

1475. He planted two by two stakes in

1476. the ground to hold the plants

1477. firm so that the wind would not be

1478. able to shake them when they didn't

  1479. have any roots.

1480. He put wraps around the base of

1481. the tree to protect them from

  1482. squirrels.

1483. He made sure, those are a thing

  1484. in the East Coast.

1485. He made sure there was a hole in

1486. the ground that was the right

  1487. size.

1488. He made sure there was the right

1489. kind of fertilizer for this tree,

  1490. right?

1491. He is tending for it in all sorts

  1492. of ways.

  1493. He's pruning it.

1494. He's spraying it for insects.

1495. He wants to make sure there's the

1496. right amount of nutrients there,

  1497. right?

1498. That tree was always an apple tree

1499. before it gave any fruit, tended to

1500. and cared for by my father.

1501. And when the fruit came, then we

  1502. knew for sure.

1503. This is an apple tree.

1504. The fruit wasn't perfect, but it was

  1505. good.

1506. Brothers and sisters, the same is

  1507. true for us.

1508. Our heavenly father is tending to

  1509. us and gardening us.

1510. He is protecting us so that the

1511. winds come, we won't be blown over

1512. when our roots haven't grown.

1513. He is giving us the nutrients and

1514. the rich food that we need through

1515. fellowship with one another and

1516. through the power of his word.

1517. He is protecting us from those

1518. things that might attack us and

  1519. tear us down.

1520. And he is doing all those things,

1521. not because we have fruit, but so

1522. that we would produce it.

1523. Did that tree produce fruit?

  1524. Absolutely.

1525. Because of the nutrients and

1526. protection and care of my father.

1527. Do we as Christians produce fruit?

  1528. Absolutely.

1529. Because of the nutrients and care and

1530. protection of our heavenly father.

1531. God is tending to us and caring for us so

1532. that we would produce fruit.

1533. What is the relationship between our

  1534. obedience and our salvation?

1535. The fruit of obedience is what confirms

1536. and verifies that God is the one

  1537. gardening our lives.

1538. He has cultivated a rich harvest,

1539. and so we work hard to see that in our lives.

1540. We work to see it in part now,

1541. and we work to see it fully in the future

  1542. when, verse 11,

1543. we will have an entrance into the eternal

1544. kingdom of our Lord and Savior,

  1545. Jesus Christ.

  1546. Please pray with me.

  1547. Dear Father in Heaven,

1548. we thank you that you are a good gardener.

1549. You are at work in our lives,

  1550. bringing fruit to bear.

1551. We ask that you would continue to do that,

1552. that you would bring us the joy that

1553. comes from seeing the growth that you

  1554. provide for the gospel.

1555. We ask that you would give opportunities

  1556. for serious self-examination,

1557. that if there are those who call themselves

1558. Christians that have no fruit or sign of faith,

1559. that you would convict them of sin

1560. and their need for repentance even now,

1561. and that you would bring them

1562. to a true and saving faith in Jesus Christ,

1563. the kind of faith that leads to a rich harvest.

1564. We thank you that we are not the gardeners,

  1565. but you are,

1566. and so we ask for these things

1567. in the name of your Son, Jesus Christ.

  1568. Amen.
