  1. Good morning.

  2. My name is Matthew Capone, and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church,

  3. and it's my joy to bring God's word to you today.

  4. Special welcome if you're new or visiting with us.

  5. We're glad that you're here, and we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats,

  6. but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  7. And as we follow Jesus together, we become convinced there's no one so good.

  8. They don't need God's grace, and no one so bad they can't have it,

  9. which is why we come back again and again to God's word,

  10. because we believe he has something to say to everyone.

  11. We're continuing our study in the book of 2 Peter,

  12. and you'll remember that the book of 2 Peter is a letter.

  13. It's a letter written by a man named Peter,

  14. and he writes it to a church somewhere in the Roman Empire in the 60s AD,

  15. and he writes it with one hope, one goal, that they would grow.

  16. In fact, that's how he ends the book.

  17. In the very last verse, he commands them to grow in the grace and knowledge of their Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

  18. Remember, I'm telling you those are the two ways he wants them to grow.

  19. He wants them to grow in both grace and knowledge.

  20. Now, we talked a lot about grace in chapter 1.

  21. We are now in chapter 2, starting at verse 4, and we're talking about knowledge.

  22. Last week, we looked at the false teachers and the threat that these teachers make to knowledge.

  23. They were teaching things that were wrong, especially things that were wrong about the second coming, about Jesus' return.

  24. They are telling people Jesus is not actually going to come back to judge the world.

  25. We're going to continue that theme this morning as we turn to 2 Peter,

  26. and so I invite you to turn there with me now.

  27. Remember, we're in chapter 2, starting in verse 4.

  28. You can turn in your worship guide or in your Bible or in your phone,

  29. and you will remember that I told you last week our application was to be the opposite of the false teachers.

  30. So the false teachers teach things that are not correct about Jesus' second coming.

  31. We want to teach what's correct.

  32. We want to make sure we're clear about the fact that Jesus is coming again to bring both judgment and salvation.

  33. So, of course, this is going to be something that touches on that very same doctrine.

  34. Now, I'll mention something as we're coming up.

  35. So I was looking at this passage, verses 4 through 10.

  36. I realized that I was trying to preach two sermons.

  37. I realized that's in time.

  38. You're welcome.

  39. And so I'm not going to touch on everything that's in verses 4 through 10.

  40. There are some things, especially in verses 7 through 10,

  41. that I'm going to save and come back to this passage a second time.

  42. We're going to have to wait until 2021, though, because Advent starts next week.

  43. So I'm going to leave you in great suspense.

  44. We're going to look at verses 4 through 10 this morning,

  45. and then we're going to look at it again in January.

  46. And so if there's things that I don't touch on this morning, you'll know why,

  47. especially, I think one of them's in verse 5,

  48. but there's a lot of things going on in verse 7 through 10.

  49. This morning, we're just going to focus on two things,

  50. God's judgment and God's salvation.

  51. We're going to focus on God's judgment and God's salvation.

  52. And this is a follow-up to what happened last week,

  53. because as we talked about the false teachers,

  54. we were told at the very end, in verse 3,

  55. their condemnation from long ago is not idle,

  56. and their destruction is not asleep.

  57. In other words, Peter is reminding these people that while they're not seeing

  58. and experiencing judgment right now, it will still happen one day.

  59. And he needs to tell them this because this doctrine of Jesus coming back is under attack.

  60. And so there's two places these people might find themselves.

  61. They might be like the false teachers.

  62. They don't believe that the second coming is real.

  63. They don't believe that God's judgment is real.

  64. And so they think the Christian message is a joke.

  65. They're telling people it's a joke.

  66. They're teaching people not to pay attention to what Jesus has to say

  67. or what Peter has to say,

  68. because they won't have to worry about God coming back again to the earth.

  69. So that's one category of people.

  70. They don't believe that Jesus is coming again.

  71. The other category, and this is probably more likely the people receiving this letter,

  72. they're tempted to doubt that Jesus is coming again.

  73. These false teachers are telling us this is all a joke.

  74. Should we really believe what Jesus and Peter said?

  75. Is it really worth staking our lives on?

  76. Are we throwing something away?

  77. By obeying what Jesus taught us, are we going to end up being fools?

  78. Because he's not coming back.

  79. And so it's in light of that that Peter is here to assure these people that Jesus is coming again.

  80. And it's with that that we read now.

  81. I invite you to read with me, starting at verse 4.

  82. And remember as we come to this that this is God's word.

  83. And God tells us that while the grass withers and the flowers fade,

  84. his word will stand forever.

  85. And so that's why we read it together now.

  86. For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell

  87. and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment,

  88. if he did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness,

  89. with seven others when he brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly,

  90. if by turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes, he condemned them to extinction,

  91. making them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly,

  92. and if he rescued Lot, greatly distressed by the sensual conduct of the wicked,

  93. for as that righteous man lived among them day after day,

  94. he was tormenting his righteous soul over their lawless deeds that he saw and heard.

  95. Verse 9,

  96. Then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials

  97. and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment,

  98. and especially those who indulge in the lust of defiling passion and despise authority.

  99. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  100. Our Father in heaven, we thank you again for your word,

  101. and we thank you especially this morning that it is clear.

  102. That you haven't left us to wonder about what the future holds,

  103. but that you have outlined it for us,

  104. that we would know how to live and walk in this world.

  105. We ask that you would use this passage this morning

  106. to increase our confidence in both your judgment and your salvation,

  107. and that you would use that to increase our hope and our trust in you.

  108. We thank you that that hope and trust don't rely on us,

  109. but they rely on Jesus,

  110. and so we ask these things in his name.

  111. Amen.

  112. As I have told you guys many times in many sermons,

  113. one of the saddest things,

  114. most frustrating things for me about moving to Colorado

  115. in midst of all the joys that we have here,

  116. the wonderful sunshine,

  117. great outdoor opportunities,

  118. amazing traffic compared to the East Coast,

  119. my great frustration here could be summed up in one word,

  120. hail.

  121. I've told you stories about my experiences with the hail in 2018.

  122. Of course, I got another fun experience with the hail this past August,

  123. on August 5th.

  124. Don't ask me why I remember that date.

  125. We got hit again here in 80906.

  126. And so one of the things I've been working on the last few weeks

  127. is getting a roofer,

  128. working insurance claims,

  129. working towards getting a new roof and new gutters

  130. and all the things that come along with that destruction.

  131. We're also working on that same thing with our church.

  132. Now, our church is different than my house in one very important way.

  133. It's a lot bigger.

  134. Which means our choice of a roofer matters a lot more.

  135. So our deacons, and especially Tom Gearing,

  136. have put a ton of work into making sure we pick the right roofer.

  137. The reason we want to pick the right roofer is,

  138. of course, there's big consequences, right?

  139. A lot's at stake.

  140. If we choose the wrong person, we could regret it for years.

  141. We could be caught up in all sorts of hassle, right?

  142. And so we have one roofer that we've been working with,

  143. and we haven't committed to this company yet.

  144. But we are optimistic about them.

  145. And one of our questions, though, is,

  146. can you handle this kind of job?

  147. It's okay to trust you with my house.

  148. Are we going to trust you with the church?

  149. How do we figure that out?

  150. Well, we want to know what their track record is.

  151. One of the things we demanded from this company

  152. was a list of references.

  153. We want numbers and names of people we can call.

  154. We want to know what sort of large buildings

  155. have you worked with in the past.

  156. How can we have confidence that you're going to deliver

  157. what you say you're going to deliver?

  158. Because a lot is at stake.

  159. And so what we're going to do is check the references.

  160. A lot is at stake for the people in this passage as well.

  161. Do they believe what Peter is telling them

  162. about Jesus' second coming?

  163. Do they believe that the judgment

  164. that is going to come upon the world is real?

  165. Peter here gives them one answer.

  166. Check the references.

  167. Can God do this type of job?

  168. Is he going to judge in the way he's promised?

  169. Look at what he's done in the past.

  170. Go back and review the data.

  171. Here are the names and the numbers of the judgment jobs

  172. that God has done in history.

  173. This is why you should have confidence for what is coming.

  174. And so this is, of course, a follow-up to verse 3.

  175. And that's exactly what Peter gives them here.

  176. He says, God has done similar work in the past.

  177. You can have confidence for him in the future.

  178. And so we're just going to go through this morning

  179. the list of references, the names and the numbers

  180. that Peter provides us so that we know

  181. that judgment and salvation is real.

  182. And so remember, I told you we're going to look

  183. at the reality of God's judgment

  184. and the reality of God's salvation.

  185. First, the reality of God's judgment.

  186. Before we get into that,

  187. I want to give you a definition of judgment.

  188. I've been throwing that word around a lot.

  189. It appears in this passage multiple times.

  190. In fact, we see it twice.

  191. I want you to look with me.

  192. For verse 4, we're told that these angels

  193. are to be kept until the what?

  194. The judgment.

  195. Verse 9, same passage.

  196. We find out the Lord knows how to rescue

  197. the godly from trials and to keep the unrighteous

  198. under punishment until the day of judgment.

  199. Now, this isn't the only time we've heard about the day.

  200. We also saw it in chapter 1, verse 19,

  201. where we were told that there is a lamp

  202. shining in a dark place until the day dawns.

  203. And I told you that this day was the day

  204. when God was going to come and make the world right.

  205. So, first of all, we're talking about the judgment.

  206. We are talking about a day.

  207. And this day is going to be the day

  208. when Jesus comes back to this world

  209. in person as he promised,

  210. and every single person in this world

  211. answers for what they have done in their lives.

  212. And so, first of all, the judgment is a day.

  213. It's an event.

  214. It is a historical event that's going to come in the future.

  215. The Bible teaches this clearly

  216. in passages like John chapter 5, verses 22 through 29,

    John 5:22–29

  217. where we're told exactly what's going to happen.

  218. Not only is this judgment, however, a day,

  219. a time where God holds everyone accountable,

  220. but there's going to be two different outcomes.

  221. So, at the end of that passage in John chapter 5,

    John 5 chapter mention

  222. we're told there's going to be a resurrection of life

  223. and a resurrection of judgment.

  224. There are going to be those who have faith in Christ

  225. who are raised from the dead,

  226. and they go on to eternal life.

  227. There's going to be those who do not have faith in Christ,

  228. and they're raised to judgment.

  229. That's the day component.

  230. There's also an ongoing component.

  231. That judgment has a picture to it

  232. that the Bible gives us.

  233. It's often spoken of as fire.

  234. We're told in Matthew chapter 5, verses 41,

    Matthew 5:41

  235. or 25, excuse me, Matthew 25,

  236. I believe it's 41, that there's an eternal fire.

  237. So, there's something about judgment that continues forever.

  238. It's not that those who are judged cease to exist,

  239. but they experience separation and alienation from God forever.

  240. And so, I mention all this to clarify

  241. what it is when we talk about God's judgment.

  242. We are saying there are two destinations for people after this life,

  243. eternal punishment or eternal life.

  244. The Bible cannot be clear about this.

  245. This is the way our confession of faith puts it.

  246. It says,

  247. The souls of the wicked are cast into hell

  248. where they remain in torments and utter darkness

  249. reserved to the judgment of the great day.

  250. In summary, judgment will occur on a day when Jesus returns.

  251. There will be two outcomes.

  252. Life, you expect me to say death,

  253. not life and death, but life,

  254. or eternal punishment.

  255. It's that reality that Peter is giving us the references here now.

  256. So, let's jump right into the list.

  257. First of all, reference number one we find in verse four.

  258. These are the first people we need to call,

  259. and they are the angels.

  260. We're told that these angels are being kept

  261. until the judgment.

  262. Now, I'm not going to go into great detail about the angels,

  263. not because I don't want to talk about it,

  264. but because these are the exact same angels

  265. we saw in 1 Peter.

  266. Remember in 1 Peter chapter three,

  267. we talked about the angels that were kept under punishment

  268. that Jesus came and proclaimed his victory over.

  269. We assume these are fallen angels from Genesis chapter six,

  270. and we talked about the fact that God was restraining them,

  271. holding them back from working evil in the world.

  272. Now, if you recall, I gave you the illustration

  273. about how I used to play capture the flag at summer camp,

  274. and I told you these angels were in jail

  275. during capture the flag.

  276. Okay, so the game was still going on.

  277. The angels were restrained.

  278. They weren't able to act.

  279. They weren't able to tag people and put more people in jail.

  280. They weren't able to keep anyone from capturing the flag.

  281. So I'm not going to rehash all of that.

  282. If you want to know all about the angels,

  283. I encourage you to go back and listen to the recording

  284. of our sermon from 1 Peter chapter three

  285. that touches on verse 19.

  286. The important part here in chapter three of 1 Peter,

  287. remember the point was that God is in control.

  288. He's in control restraining these wicked angels

  289. from Genesis chapter six,

  290. and he proclaims his victory over them.

  291. Here, the point is slightly different.

  292. Yes, God is in control.

  293. He's restraining evil,

  294. not in preparation for Jesus to proclaim his victory,

  295. although that's true,

  296. here in preparation for judgment.

  297. Now, this may seem like a strange reference,

  298. but to the people reading 1 Peter

  299. and the people reading 2 Peter,

  300. this would have been something common

  301. that they would have discussed all the time.

  302. Everyone would have known about Noah.

  303. They would have known about the angels.

  304. It was talked about in the Bible,

  305. talked about even more outside of the Bible.

  306. So reference number one,

  307. God restrains the angels,

  308. the wicked angels from Genesis chapter six.

  309. He keeps them for judgment.

  310. If you want to hear more about that,

  311. we've talked about it in length, 1 Peter chapter three.

  312. Happy to talk about it more afterwards,

  313. but I'm not going to dwell on the angels.

  314. We're going to move on to Noah.

  315. So judgment job number one,

  316. God restrained the angels.

  317. Okay, reference number two

  318. that we're going to call.

  319. We're going to call Noah, verse five.

  320. Now, if you're familiar with the Bible,

  321. you know the story of Noah.

  322. He's someone who lived

  323. in the early part of the world,

  324. the history of the world,

  325. and he lived in an extremely wicked time.

  326. The earth was so wicked

  327. that God decided he needed to destroy

  328. the entire world with a flood,

  329. except he saved Noah and his family.

  330. And of course, that's what we see here in verse five.

  331. If he did not spare the ancient world,

  332. but preserved Noah with seven others.

  333. So in other words,

  334. there's only eight people

  335. that survived this judgment.

  336. God destroyed the entire world with a flood.

  337. He brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly.

  338. And so reference number two,

  339. look to the flood.

  340. Look to Noah.

  341. Remember, God judged the world then.

  342. He has proven that he has the ability

  343. to then judge in the future.

  344. We'll talk about this more

  345. in chapter three of second Peter,

  346. but the first judgment of the flood was by water.

  347. The Bible frequently speaks

  348. of the second judgment being by fire.

  349. There's a reason Matthew chapter 25

    Matthew 25 chapter mention

  350. talks about an eternal fire.

  351. And so this reference is self-explanatory, essentially.

  352. God judged the world then.

  353. He demonstrated his ability

  354. and willingness to do it.

  355. He'll do it in the future.

  356. Now, reference number three, verse six.

  357. By the way, when we got references from the builder,

  358. there's a long resume, all the skills,

  359. multiple names, multiple jobs, multiple numbers.

  360. Right?

  361. We want more than one reference.

  362. We want to know for sure

  363. there are multiple people

  364. who have worked with this roofer

  365. who can attest that he's able to get the job done.

  366. The same thing with God.

  367. We now have a third reference,

  368. verse six, Sodom and Gomorrah.

  369. By the way, all of these are stories

  370. from the book of Genesis.

  371. And you'll remember that Sodom and Gomorrah

  372. was a city encountered by Abraham.

  373. And this city had two major sins.

  374. One of their sins was a lack of hospitality.

  375. Bible speaks clearly about that.

  376. Their other sin was sexual immorality and perversion.

  377. Both of these sins were rampant in Sodom and Gomorrah.

  378. God finally brings his judgment on the city

  379. and destroys it.

  380. And we're told that this is meant to be a lesson for us

  381. in verse six.

  382. So this wasn't mentioned in verse five about Noah,

  383. but there's something special about this reference.

  384. It tells us in verse six,

  385. at near the end,

  386. God was making them an example

  387. of what is going to happen to the ungodly.

  388. In other words, Sodom and Gomorrah,

  389. God's destruction of this city in the ancient world

  390. was meant to serve as a small picture

  391. of what would one day be true.

  392. And so I want you to think about this

  393. as a larger concept in the Bible.

  394. There are places in the Bible

  395. where we see the future brought into the present.

  396. There's places in the Bible

  397. where we see the future brought into the present.

  398. So think with me for a minute.

  399. Jesus performs miracles during his earthly ministry.

  400. He's not just doing it to show his power,

  401. although he is.

  402. When Jesus performs miracles

  403. during his earthly ministry,

  404. he is giving a small picture

  405. of what the future will look like.

  406. One day there will no longer be sickness.

  407. Guess what?

  408. In this specific instance,

  409. I'm going to heal this sickness.

  410. So we have places,

  411. especially in Jesus' ministry,

  412. where future salvation and redemption

  413. is brought into our present reality.

  414. The same is true of judgment.

  415. There are places in the Bible

  416. where the future is brought into the present.

  417. Sodom and Gomorrah is example number one,

  418. exhibit A in the Bible

  419. of future judgment

  420. being brought into the present.

  421. Here's a small picture of what's to come.

  422. This is the same thing that happens

  423. when you're at a restaurant, right?

  424. You might look at a menu

  425. and it might say something like,

  426. small bites.

  427. Maybe it's appetizers.

  428. You're getting a small taste of something

  429. before the main meal,

  430. before the entree.

  431. Same thing is true of God's judgment

  432. and his salvation.

  433. There are small bites that we get.

  434. Small bites of the goodness

  435. and the salvation

  436. and the restoration that's to come

  437. and small bites of God's judgment

  438. and his justice that's to come.

  439. Sodom and Gomorrah here

  440. makes that specific point.

  441. And so we have our three judgment references.

  442. Now this is meant, of course,

  443. for people who do believe the Bible.

  444. This is meant for Christians.

  445. And so these people,

  446. I haven't given you any defense at this point

  447. of the historicity of the flood,

  448. the historicity of Sodom and Gomorrah.

  449. If you're not a Christian,

  450. you might be thinking,

  451. man, that's great.

  452. I don't believe any of those stories anyway.

  453. So why should I care about these references?

  454. I can't call Sodom and Gomorrah.

  455. That was years ago.

  456. I can't call Noah and the flood.

  457. Noah's not alive anymore.

  458. What am I supposed to do

  459. with this picture of judgment?

  460. And I'll tell you,

  461. I'll give you two things.

  462. First of all,

  463. this passage is meant primarily for Christians.

  464. Peter's writing it to those

  465. who believe the Bible

  466. and believe it's true.

  467. If you don't believe the Bible,

  468. you don't believe it's true.

  469. We don't have time this morning

  470. to go into a defense of all these events.

  471. I'm going to give you another reference.

  472. As we look around the world today,

  473. as we live in this world,

  474. judgment is what makes most sense of it.

  475. When we look at the destruction

  476. that happens in the world

  477. and we look at nature around us,

  478. there is nothing in nature

  479. that would cause us to believe

  480. that we can avoid the judgment.

  481. And I'm going to read you a few passages.

  482. One is from a book by a man named Tim Keller

  483. who wrote The Reason for God

  484. and he writes an entire chapter

  485. about God sending people to hell.

  486. He ends with this paragraph.

  487. The belief in a God of pure love

  488. who accepts everyone

  489. and judges no one

  490. is a powerful act of faith.

  491. Not only is there no evidence for it

  492. in the natural order,

  493. but there is almost no historical,

  494. religious, textual support for it

  495. outside of Christianity.

  496. The more one looks at it,

  497. the less justified it appears.

  498. And I want to hone in on that one phrase.

  499. There is no evidence for it

  500. in the natural order.

  501. In other words,

  502. as we look around at the world,

  503. we see judgment everywhere.

  504. We see people die.

  505. We see bodies decaying.

  506. We see natural disasters.

  507. We see the coronavirus.

  508. One of the things that I love about Christianity

  509. is summed up by a man named Francis Schaeffer

  510. who said that the hand,

  511. that the Bible fits the hand of reality like a glove.

  512. The Bible fits the hand of reality like a glove.

  513. In other words,

  514. the Bible makes sense of the world.

  515. Why is it that things are so broken?

  516. Why is it that we experience disease

  517. and illness and sickness and death?

  518. Why is it that people do atrocious things

  519. to one another?

  520. Well, of course,

  521. there's this thing called sin in the world at work.

  522. Of course, the world is broken.

  523. It doesn't work the way it's supposed to be.

  524. There's a reason we want things to be different.

  525. It's because our hearts know

  526. that the world was not created to be sick and dying.

  527. Whether we're Christians or not,

  528. we long for Eden.

  529. We long for everything to be made right.

  530. And we see and experience judgment.

  531. And so we as Christians can take hope and confidence

  532. in what we believe has happened in the past.

  533. If you're not a Christian,

  534. you should be challenged and chastened

  535. by what you see happening in the present.

  536. God's judgment is real.

  537. Now, I don't have time to read much of it,

  538. but you'll remember Mark Fairbrother

  539. gave many copies of this book for you to pick up.

  540. The last one was picked up this morning.

  541. The one who picked it up will remain nameless.

  542. But he talks about this reality.

  543. Part of what we see in the coronavirus,

  544. now I'm not saying that everyone who gets the virus,

  545. it's because of their specific sin, right?

  546. We've talked about this before in suffering.

  547. All of us experience suffering.

  548. It's not necessarily a punishment for our specific sin,

  549. but all suffering is a result of sin.

  550. And Piper talks about that in this book.

  551. He tells us, this is in chapter six,

  552. sin, in fact, is why all physical misery exists.

  553. This is on page 62.

  554. The Bible does not see this brokenness as merely natural,

  555. but as the judgment of God on a world permeated with sin.

  556. In other words, when we experience brokenness in this world,

  557. we, in a sense, see some of the future brought into the present.

  558. God is bringing his judgment to bear on this world.

  559. God judged the world with Noah,

  560. back what Peter calls the ancient world.

  561. He will judge it in the future as well.

  562. God judged the wicked at Sodom and Gomorrah.

  563. God will judge the wicked in the future.

  564. He has completed those kinds of jobs in the past.

  565. He will complete them in the future.

  566. And so we're reminded here,

  567. if you're not a Christian,

  568. the application for you is to beware.

  569. Just because you don't see judgment now

  570. doesn't mean it's not coming.

  571. You will answer to God one day

  572. for everything you have done in this life.

  573. And so your only hope

  574. is in Jesus Christ,

  575. who offers salvation for sinners.

  576. If you are a Christian,

  577. your application is this,

  578. to hold on.

  579. God will do what he's promised to do.

  580. He has done it in the past.

  581. He will do it again.

  582. His judgment is real.

  583. Hope on it.

  584. His judgment is real.

  585. Your righteousness is not in vain.

  586. His judgment is real.

  587. Everything one day

  588. will be made right.

  589. And so we see,

  590. from the references

  591. and from the world around us,

  592. the reality of God's judgment.

  593. And I told you this book,

  594. this section in this book

  595. is written primarily to Christians.

  596. And so, of course,

  597. we also see the reality of his salvation.

  598. When we get to the reality of God's salvation,

  599. we have not three references,

  600. but two references.

  601. We get to skip the angels this time.

  602. They're only an example of judgment.

  603. We get to, however,

  604. have references of God's salvation.

  605. First, verse five,

  606. Noah.

  607. If he did not spare the ancient world,

  608. but preserved Noah.

  609. God brought his judgment

  610. and he saw the righteous.

  611. God brought his judgment

  612. and he saved the righteous.

  613. And not only was Noah righteous,

  614. he was in an extreme minority.

  615. It was him and seven other people.

  616. And so, as radical as it might sound,

  617. I want you to imagine for a second

  618. that us in this room

  619. are the only Christians

  620. in the world right now.

  621. Imagine how terrible that would be,

  622. how isolating that would be.

  623. we would be in an exponentially

  624. better situation than Noah was.

  625. The people in this room

  626. were the only Christians in the world.

  627. We would be in an exponentially

  628. better position than Noah was in.

  629. He only had seven others.

  630. And God preserved him.

  631. And we'll talk about this more

  632. when we come back to this passage in January,

  633. but we're told he's a herald of righteousness.

  634. Some people believe what's happening here

  635. is that Noah was actually actively preaching

  636. while he was building the ark.

  637. He was telling people

  638. about the hope that he had in God

  639. and no one would listen.

  640. And God protected, preserved Noah.

  641. He did it supernaturally.

  642. And so Noah is a reference

  643. of God's faithfulness.

  644. These people are surrounded by false teachers,

  645. just like Noah was surrounded by the wicked.

  646. And Noah made it.

  647. God saved him.

  648. Reference two.

  649. Not just Noah.

  650. Verse seven.

  651. Righteous Lot.

  652. Now we won't go into this,

  653. but if you're familiar with the story of Lot,

  654. you know Lot was radically imperfect.

  655. Lot was not a role model.

  656. I'm not going to go into that this morning,

  657. but we're told here he's righteous.

  658. He had, despite all his flaws

  659. and imperfections and sin,

  660. hope in God in the midst of a wicked city.

  661. He was greatly distressed

  662. by the conduct around him.

  663. He was tormenting his righteous soul.

  664. And very beginning of verse seven,

  665. God rescued him.

  666. God rescued Lot.

  667. It's not just that God knows

  668. how to do the job of judgment.

  669. He's also really good

  670. at doing the job of salvation.

  671. It's not just that God is good

  672. at the job of judgment.

  673. He's also good at doing the job of salvation.

  674. So the application for us is this.

  675. God was faithful to Noah and Lot.

  676. They were in the extreme minority.

  677. God will be faithful to you as well.

  678. God was faithful to Noah and Lot.

  679. God will be faithful to you as well.

  680. God saved Noah and Lot.

  681. He will save you.

  682. Imagine with me how discouraging it was

  683. to be Noah.

  684. Imagine how discouraging it was

  685. to be Lot.

  686. More discouraging than we can imagine.

  687. When we are discouraged,

  688. we remember their stories

  689. and we can see the story we're in.

  690. Remember what part of the story

  691. you're in right now.

  692. They were greatly discouraged

  693. at times, I have no doubt,

  694. and God saved them.

  695. How much more can we have hope

  696. and confidence

  697. in the midst of our discouragement?

  698. How much more can we have hope

  699. and confidence than Noah and Lot did?

  700. They lived in a wicked

  701. and unrighteous world.

  702. As we live in a wicked

  703. and unrighteous world,

  704. we can also look forward

  705. to God's redemption and salvation.

  706. God rescued them.

  707. He will rescue us.

  708. Finally, there's probably

  709. lots of moments

  710. where righteousness didn't look like

  711. it was worth it.

  712. I wouldn't be surprised

  713. if Lot and Noah

  714. sometimes wondered

  715. if they were crazy.

  716. In the end,

  717. it was worth it.

  718. They held on.

  719. God came through

  720. and delivered them.

  721. And so for us

  722. who have faith in Jesus Christ,

  723. it is on us to trust

  724. and hope

  725. and obey.

  726. Remember that knowledge

  727. and grace

  728. are intimately connected

  729. to each other.

  730. The purpose of growing

  731. in knowledge

  732. is to grow in grace.

  733. And so we're to remember

  734. everything we were told

  735. in chapter 1.

  736. Remember,

  737. verses 5 through 8

  738. gave us a list

  739. of qualities

  740. to be working for.

  741. Knowing that,

  742. verse 9,

  743. this is what would lead

  744. to the entrance

  745. of an eternal kingdom.

  746. And so Christians continue,

  747. like Lot and Noah,

  748. being faithful

  749. in an unfaithful world,

  750. knowing that God

  751. will come through

  752. and do what he's promised

  753. to do.

  754. We trust,

  755. we hope,

  756. and we obey.

  757. Of course,

  758. our Lord Jesus

  759. also taught these things.

  760. He also taught

  761. about Sodom and Gomorrah.

  762. In Luke chapter 17,

    Luke 17 chapter mention

  763. Jesus says

  764. his second coming

  765. is going to be

  766. just like Sodom and Gomorrah.

  767. Oh,

  768. I wonder where Peter

  769. got this from.

  770. Probably got it from Jesus.

  771. He says,

  772. in Sodom and Gomorrah,

  773. people were having

  774. all kinds of fun

  775. doing all sorts of things,

  776. and then the judgment came.

  777. And then Jesus tells us,

  778. hey,

  779. by the way,

  780. the same thing

  781. is going to be true for me.

  782. People are going to be

  783. having all sorts of fun

  784. doing all sorts of things,

  785. and then I'll come

  786. in judgment.

  787. And so Jesus tells us

  788. this same thing.

  789. However,

  790. Jesus does something else

  791. as well.

  792. Jesus is an even

  793. greater reference

  794. of God's judgment

  795. and his salvation.

  796. Jesus is an even

  797. greater demonstration

  798. of judgment

  799. and salvation

  800. being brought

  801. into the present.

  802. However,

  803. unlike Sodom and Gomorrah,

  804. when judgment

  805. was brought

  806. into the present

  807. on Jesus

  808. on the cross,

  809. it was the punishment

  810. not of the unrighteous,

  811. but the righteous.

  812. And so judgment

  813. was given

  814. to someone

  815. who did not deserve it.

  816. And when salvation

  817. was brought in,

  818. it was brought

  819. not for the righteous

  820. but for the unrighteous.

  821. And so as sobering

  822. and challenging

  823. a topic as it is

  824. to talk about

  825. God's judgment,

  826. it is also a topic

  827. of incredible hope

  828. because these people

  829. know it was Jesus

  830. who took the judgment

  831. for them.

  832. The reality

  833. of God's judgment

  834. was demonstrated

  835. most importantly

  836. on the cross

  837. when Jesus died

  838. for our sins.

  839. And the reality

  840. of his salvation

  841. was made possible

  842. and only possible

  843. by his death.

  844. And so Jesus

  845. is the one

  846. who ultimately

  847. shows us

  848. the reality

  849. of God's judgment

  850. and the reality

  851. of his salvation.

  852. And we know,

  853. of course,

  854. in this passage

  855. we see the word righteous

  856. show up a few times,

  857. right?

  858. Verse 5,

  859. Noah was a herald

  860. of righteousness.

  861. Verse 7,

  862. Lot is righteous

  863. and yet we also know

  864. that that righteousness

  865. is not something

  866. that earned them

  867. anything from God.

  868. We know that

  869. because of this

  870. very same letter.

  871. Remember verse 1

  872. of chapter 1.

  873. To those who have

  874. obtained a faith

  875. of equal standing

  876. with ours

  877. by the righteousness

  878. of our God

  879. and Savior,

  880. Jesus Christ.

  881. In other words,

  882. the only righteousness

  883. that matters

  884. is the righteousness

  885. that belongs

  886. to Jesus

  887. and he gives

  888. to us.

  889. And so if we have

  890. faith and trust

  891. in Jesus Christ,

  892. we need not fear

  893. his judgment

  894. but look forward

  895. to his salvation

  896. because he has

  897. already brought

  898. future judgment

  899. into the present

  900. on Jesus Christ.

  901. And so the call

  902. is for everyone.

  903. Remember,

  904. there are only

  905. two types of people.

  906. This passage

  907. makes that clear.

  908. There are the godly

  909. and the ungodly,

  910. the righteous

  911. and the unrighteous.

  912. There are only

  913. two destinations

  914. and so the call

  915. is clear for us

  916. today.

  917. The question,

  918. which side

  919. do we fall into?

  920. Are we righteous

  921. or unrighteous?

  922. Are we godly

  923. or ungodly?

  924. Do we have,

  925. chapter 1,

  926. verse 1,

  927. the righteousness

  928. that comes

  929. through Jesus Christ

  930. or do we not?

  931. If we have

  932. that righteousness,

  933. we look forward

  934. to salvation.

  935. If we do not have it,

  936. we look forward

  937. only to judgment.

  938. which side

  939. will you fall on?

  940. Remember,

  941. we're asking

  942. this question,

  943. why should we believe

  944. in God's judgment

  945. and his salvation?

  946. Now,

  947. if you're familiar

  948. with history,

  949. art history,

  950. you've probably heard

  951. of a Renaissance

  952. painter named

  953. Giotto.

  954. And Giotto

  955. was an Italian painter

  956. in the late 13th

  957. and early 14th centuries

  958. and there's a story

  959. told about Giotto

  960. where the Pope

  961. was looking for someone

  962. to be his painter.

  963. And so,

  964. he commissioned

  965. samples

  966. from a variety

  967. of artists.

  968. He sent out

  969. his representative

  970. to bring in

  971. drawings and paintings

  972. from various people.

  973. And so,

  974. people would give him,

  975. right,

  976. their best works,

  977. the things that they hoped

  978. would impress the Pope

  979. that he would pick them.

  980. Giotto,

  981. however,

  982. picked a very different strategy.

  983. Representative came to him

  984. asking for a sample.

  985. He whipped out

  986. a blank canvas

  987. and then with just his hand,

  988. his wrist,

  989. he quickly flicked out

  990. a circle.

  991. And as the story tells it,

  992. it was a perfect circle.

  993. It looked like it had been

  994. drawn by a compass.

  995. Now,

  996. this representative

  997. felt insulted.

  998. He said,

  999. is that really what you're

1000. going to send to the Pope?

1001. You're just going to send him

1002. a circle on a sheet of paper.

  1003. Giotto said yes.

  1004. So,

1005. all of them went back

  1006. to the Pope

  1007. and he examined

  1008. all these different

  1009. wonderful drawings

  1010. and came

  1011. to Giotto's

  1012. blank canvas

  1013. with one circle

  1014. written with his wrist.

  1015. And the Pope

  1016. understood

  1017. what the messenger

  1018. had missed.

  1019. And the point

  1020. was clear.

  1021. If I can draw

  1022. a perfect circle

  1023. with just my hand,

1024. imagine what I can do

  1025. when I use

  1026. my whole body.

  1027. the Pope

  1028. realized that

  1029. Giotto was

  1030. the greatest

  1031. of all the artists

  1032. who had sent samples.

  1033. So,

1034. guess who got the job?

  1035. Not the ones

  1036. who'd sent in

  1037. wonderful paintings,

  1038. but the one

1039. who had just sent in

  1040. a perfect circle

  1041. with the flick

  1042. of his hand.

  1043. Brothers and sisters,

1044. Peter is telling us this.

  1045. God is saying,

  1046. look at the judgment

  1047. that I can do

  1048. just with the flick

  1049. of my hand.

  1050. if that's what

  1051. I can do

  1052. just in a minute,

  1053. imagine what

  1054. my judgment

  1055. and salvation

  1056. will look like

  1057. at the end

  1058. of the age.

  1059. Imagine that.

  1060. Hope in it

  1061. and trust in it.

  1062. It will be greater

  1063. than anything

  1064. you can imagine.

  1065. You can look

  1066. at the small things

  1067. that I have done

  1068. in the past

  1069. and have confidence

  1070. in the great thing

  1071. that I will do

  1072. in the future.

  1073. And of course,

  1074. we can have confidence

  1075. most of all

  1076. because of the judgment

  1077. and the salvation

  1078. that we see

  1079. in Jesus Christ.

  1080. We see how great

  1081. his judgment is

  1082. and how great

  1083. his salvation is.

  1084. And so,

  1085. I invite you

  1086. to pray with me

  1087. for this passage

  1088. from your word

  1089. and we ask

1090. that you would use us

  1091. to convict us

  1092. of the reality

  1093. of your judgment

  1094. and to drive us

  1095. to hope

  1096. and faith

  1097. and trust

  1098. in Jesus Christ.

  1099. We thank you

  1100. that you haven't

  1101. left us alone

  1102. but you've given us

  1103. your word

  1104. to guide us

  1105. as we walk

  1106. towards that great

  1107. and glorious future.

  1108. We ask these things

  1109. thankful

  1110. that we don't have

  1111. to earn them

  1112. or deserve them

  1113. but we ask them

  1114. in Jesus' name.

  1115. Amen.
