  1. Good morning. My name is Matthew Capone, and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church,

  2. and it's my joy to bring God's word to you today.

  3. We do welcome you. If you're new with us and you're joining us virtually,

  4. we invite you to connect with us through our digital visitor card,

  5. which you'll find if you go to our homepage at cmpca.net.

  6. There will be a pop-up with immediately a link to go and fill out one of those cards,

  7. and that will help us to connect with you and connect you with our community.

  8. For those of us who are old-timers, of course, I invite you to make comments as they're relevant to what we're discussing this morning

  9. and to greet one another if you missed us at the very beginning,

  10. so that we have a sense of our fellowship with one another even as we're separated,

  11. and also that we have a record that you are here with us.

  12. We're continuing our study in the book of Zechariah, and we're going to be in Zechariah chapter 11 this morning

    Zechariah 11 chapter mention

  13. as we continue through the season of Advent.

  14. You'll remember that Advent comes from a Latin word that means to come or to arrive,

  15. and during the season of Advent, we take a special focus on Jesus coming or arriving to Earth.

  16. And there's two things that we do.

  17. We celebrate what God's done in the past,

  18. and so that's why we sing Christmas songs like Joy to the World,

  19. and we also long and look forward to what He'll do in the future,

  20. and so that's why we sing songs like O Come, O Come, Emmanuel.

  21. And that is a summary of what we do in all of the Christian life,

  22. because in all of the Christian life, we celebrate what God's done in the past,

  23. we look forward to what He's going to do in the future,

  24. and we live faithfully now in the present in light of both of those things.

  25. And so it's with that that we are turning again to the book of Zechariah.

  26. We're going to be in chapter 11.

  27. You can track with me in your worship guide.

  28. Those of you who are here are also in your Bible or on your phone.

  29. And you'll remember that Ezekiel was a prophet to the nation of Israel during the 6th century.

  30. And he prophesied to them after they had returned from exile in Babylon.

  31. Persia had defeated Babylon.

  32. And just like a collection of sermons would cover a variety of topics,

  33. so this collection of prophecies covers a variety of topics as well.

  34. The chapters that we are in, chapters 9 through 13,

  35. talk about the coming or future kingdom of God.

  36. And you'll remember also that we're asking this question that came to us in chapter 9.

  37. How can we rejoice when it comes to Advent?

  38. How can Advent be for us not like a commercial that's played over and over,

  39. that becomes old and stale,

  40. but how can it be like a cup of water that we desperately need,

  41. something that refreshes us over and over?

  42. We saw in chapter 9 that Jesus is our coming King,

  43. and as our coming King he causes us to rejoice because he's a king on a donkey,

  44. which means that he is a humble king and he's a peaceful king.

  45. Last week we saw that Jesus was not just our humble king but also our shepherd.

  46. And in being our shepherd we realize that we live in a world filled with bad shepherds

  47. and we live in a world that hates good shepherds.

  48. But Jesus is actually the great shepherd and he's a better leader than we deserve.

  49. And he was a shepherd who was rejected by his sheep and he dies for those very same sheep.

  50. This morning as we come to chapter 11,

  51. we are going to focus on the cleansing that Jesus brings.

  52. If you've been in the church for a while, you have heard the phrase,

  53. Jesus washing us clean.

  54. And we're going to take a look at that this morning because that concept is going to come up

  55. in chapter 13, or excuse me, in chapter 13, verse 1.

  56. We're going to see that there will be a fountain open for the house of David

  57. and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to cleanse them from sin and uncleanness.

  58. Now I'm going to warn you as we get started that there is a lot here in this passage.

  59. We're not going to focus on all of it equally.

  60. So there's a lot of things going on with the relationship between Israel and Judah,

  61. specifically in verses 1 through 9.

  62. We're not going to focus on that.

  63. We're going to talk a little bit about verses 1 through 9.

  64. We're especially going to focus on verses 10 through 14 of chapter 12 and then verse 1 of chapter 13.

  65. And we're going to simply see this morning some simple but profound truths.

  66. We're going to look at the gospel, simple, full, and free.

  67. And so it's with that that we turn to Zechariah chapter 12, verse 1.

    Zechariah 12:1

  68. And remember as we read this that this is God's word.

  69. And God tells us that his word is more precious than gold, even the finest gold.

  70. And it is sweeter than honey, even honey that comes straight from the honeycomb.

  71. And so that's why we read it now, starting at verse 1.

  72. The oracle of the word of the Lord concerning Israel.

  73. Thus declares the Lord who stretched out the heavens and founded the earth

  74. and formed the spirit of man within him.

  75. Behold, I am about to make Jerusalem a cup of staggering to all the surrounding peoples.

  76. The siege of Jerusalem will also be against Judah.

  77. On that day I will make Jerusalem a heavy stone for all the peoples.

  78. All who lift it will surely hurt themselves.

  79. And all the nations of the earth will gather against it.

  80. On that day, declares the Lord, I will strike every horse with panic and its rider with madness.

  81. But for the sake of the house of Judah I will keep my eyes open

  82. when I strike every horse of the peoples with blindness.

  83. Then the clans of Judah shall say to themselves,

  84. The inhabitants of Jerusalem have strength through the Lord of hosts, their God.

  85. Verse 6.

  86. On that day I will make the clans of Judah like a blazing pot in the midst of wood,

  87. like a flaming torch among sheaths.

  88. And they shall devour to the right and to the left all the surrounding peoples,

  89. while Jerusalem shall again be inhabited in its place in Jerusalem.

  90. And the Lord will give salvation to the tents of Judah first,

  91. that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem may not surpass that of Judah.

  92. On that day the Lord will protect the inhabitants of Jerusalem,

  93. so that the feeblest among them on that day shall be like David,

  94. and the house of David shall be like God,

  95. like the angel of the Lord going before them.

  96. And on that day I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.

  97. Verse 10.

  98. And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem

  99. a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy,

  100. so that when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced,

  101. they shall mourn for him as one mourns for an only child,

  102. and weep bitterly over him as one weeps over a firstborn.

  103. On that day the mourning in Jerusalem will be as great as the mourning for Hadad-Rimen

  104. in the plain of Megiddo.

  105. The land shall mourn each family by itself,

  106. the family of the house of David by itself,

  107. and their wives by themselves,

  108. the family of the house of Nathan by itself,

  109. and their wives by themselves,

  110. the family of the house of Levi by itself,

  111. and their wives by themselves,

  112. the family of the Shimaites by itself,

  113. and their wives by themselves,

  114. and all the families that are left, each by itself and their wives by themselves.

  115. On that day there shall be a fountain open for the house of David

  116. and the inhabitants of Jerusalem to cleanse them from sin and uncleanness.

  117. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  118. Our Father in heaven, we thank you again that your word is powerful

  119. and it does not return to you empty,

  120. even if it's coming across the internet rather than in person.

  121. We ask that you would send your Holy Spirit now to us,

  122. no matter where we are hearing and listening to your word,

  123. that you would use it to soften our hearts,

  124. to show us our need for your cleansing,

  125. and you would also assure us that you are the one who cleanses us.

  126. And we ask that you would use that to give us great joy,

  127. no matter what else is happening in our world,

  128. and in our lives.

  129. And we ask these things grateful that we do not have to earn them,

  130. but we ask them instead in the name of Jesus.

  131. Amen.

  132. We just finished an election season,

  133. and no matter which candidate you were cheering for,

  134. candidates, I guess, multiple,

  135. we all know this, that if you're going to have power,

  136. it takes a battle.

  137. It takes a battle to stay in power if you're the incumbent.

  138. It takes a battle to gain power if you're not the incumbent.

  139. And so we saw previously in chapter 9

  140. that Jesus was going to be a king who brings peace.

  141. And if he's going to bring peace,

  142. he's going to be in power.

  143. You can't have power without a battle.

  144. Same thing is true of this kingdom,

  145. and we see it again in this passage.

  146. Verses 1 through 9 are telling us

  147. that the battle that has to happen for Jesus to rule.

  148. Now, we often think of Jesus as this gentle and kind man,

  149. and he is.

  150. He's also a fierce and ferocious warrior.

  151. He is coming to make all things right.

  152. That means he has to destroy his enemies.

  153. We talked about this two summers ago

  154. when we were in the book of Psalms.

  155. We looked at Psalm 5,

  156. which is what we called an imprecatory psalm,

  157. or a psalm that prays for justice.

  158. And I told you then that every time

  159. we say the Lord's Prayer together,

  160. we are praying for God to destroy his enemies

  161. because how else could his kingdom come on earth

  162. as it is in heaven?

  163. And so it's that battle that we see

  164. at the very beginning of this passage.

  165. I'm just going to go over it for you very quickly.

  166. First, verse 2, there's going to be a siege against Jerusalem.

  167. Verse 3, this siege is going to involve all the nations.

  168. So we see at the end of the verse,

  169. all the nations of the earth will gather against it.

  170. That is Jerusalem.

  171. Okay, verses 3 and 5, battle against Jerusalem,

  172. all the nations.

  173. God is going to crush all the nations.

  174. And in crushing all the nations,

  175. the end of verse 5,

  176. we see he's giving his people strength.

  177. The clans of Judah shall say to themselves,

  178. the inhabitants of Jerusalem have strength

  179. through the Lord of hosts, their God.

  180. And then in verse 9,

  181. we're given a summary statement of this entire section.

  182. So 9 sums up verses 1 through 9

  183. when it tells us,

  184. and on that day I will seek to destroy

  185. all the nations that come against Jerusalem.

  186. And the point is this.

  187. Ultimately, the Lord will establish his kingdom.

  188. Ultimately, the Lord will establish his kingdom.

  189. Christ secures victory for his people

  190. and therefore for the church.

  191. That's what we take from this battle against Jerusalem.

  192. It's an image to show us,

  193. it's an illustration to show us

  194. ultimately what's going to happen

  195. in the battle between God

  196. and his enemies in the world.

  197. Moving from that battle then,

  198. we see this idea of cleansing

  199. and we also find out something very surprising.

  200. Remember last week we had a little bit of a twist.

  201. We of course agreed

  202. that the world is filled with bad shepherds.

  203. The counterintuitive twist

  204. was that people also hate good shepherds.

  205. We see here that the Lord defeats his enemies.

  206. Counterintuitive twist.

  207. Verse 10,

  208. The Lord who defeats his enemies also dies.

  209. He dies in this battle

  210. and that's what we see here in verse 10.

  211. When they look on me,

  212. on him who they have pierced.

  213. So these are the people who have won the battle.

  214. This is Jerusalem being victorious

  215. and suddenly they're looking on me.

  216. That's God speaking

  217. as one they have pierced.

  218. Somehow as they win the battle,

  219. they've actually injured their own leader.

  220. And we learn,

  221. remember these passages

  222. that we're going through in Zechariah

  223. are the ones that are quoted in the New Testament.

  224. We learn in John chapter 19, verse 37,

    John 19:37

  225. that this one who has been pierced

  226. is referring to Jesus

  227. because John tells us

  228. that this is a fulfillment.

  229. When Jesus dies,

  230. it's a fulfillment of this verse.

  231. And this word pierced,

  232. when it's often used in the Old Testament,

  233. refers to someone who is dying

  234. because of the wound that they receive.

  235. And we know, of course,

  236. that Jesus was pierced in his side

  237. as he died on the cross.

  238. And so we now understand this passage

  239. in a way that the original hearers would not.

  240. They have killed God.

  241. The victory of God's people

  242. comes through the death of God.

  243. And we see even more echoes of that

  244. in verses 10 and 11

  245. because how are they going to mourn?

  246. They shall mourn for him

  247. as one mourns for an only child

  248. and weep bitterly over him

  249. as one weeps over a firstborn.

  250. And of course, we know that Jesus is referred to

  251. as God's only beloved son,

  252. his only begotten son.

  253. And so we know now

  254. that this battle is telling us

  255. about the battle that Jesus wins

  256. through his death.

  257. The one who is pierced

  258. is Jesus.

  259. The one who dies from this battle

  260. is God.

  261. He cleanses us.

  262. In Jesus' death,

  263. winning this battle,

  264. we'll see that he changes us

  265. and he also cleanses us.

  266. First, we see that he changes us.

  267. Verse 10,

  268. I will pour out on the house of David

  269. and the inhabitants of Jerusalem

  270. a spirit of grace

  271. and pleas for mercy.

  272. Pleas for mercy,

  273. meaning these people

  274. are going to repent.

  275. They're going to cry out

  276. for God to forgive them,

  277. but notice the order.

  278. They cry out for God

  279. to forgive them

  280. after he pours out his spirit,

  281. not before.

  282. In other words,

  283. outside of God

  284. pouring out his spirit,

  285. they are unable

  286. to cry out for mercy.

  287. They are unable to repent.

  288. It is God's spirit

  289. that comes first

  290. and softens

  291. and changes their heart.

  292. It is God's spirit

  293. that makes it possible

  294. for them to actually

  295. see their sin

  296. and confess that they're wrong.

  297. In fact,

  298. this is foretold

  299. throughout the Old Testament.

  300. Prophets like Ezekiel

  301. and Joel and Isaiah

  302. talked about a day

  303. when God's spirit

  304. would be poured out

  305. and it would change his people.

  306. They would have new hearts,

  307. hearts of flesh

  308. rather than hearts of stone.

  309. Of course,

  310. it's no accident here

  311. that the pouring out

  312. is the image of water

  313. being poured out.

  314. It's a cleansing image.

  315. Now,

  316. I won't go off

  317. on a bunny trail,

  318. but that's part of the reason

  319. that we pour out water

  320. on someone

  321. when we baptize them.

  322. We believe that's a continuation

  323. of this imagery,

  324. that it's water

  325. that cleanses

  326. coming from above.

  327. And it brings repentance,

  328. repentance that can only come

  329. from God's spirit.

  330. And so we see here,

  331. first,

  332. remember we saw

  333. a couple weeks ago,

  334. only God can bring peace

  335. to the nations, right?

  336. We actually are not capable

  337. of fixing this world.

  338. The accompanying truth

  339. is this,

  340. only God can bring change

  341. to us.

  342. Yes,

  343. only God can bring peace

  344. to the nations.

  345. Only God can bring change

  346. to us.

  347. It is only

  348. when we are touched

  349. and affected

  350. by God's spirit

  351. that we are able

  352. to change.

  353. And that's what we see

  354. in this passage.

  355. We see people

  356. who are moved deeply

  357. by true repentance

  358. of their sin.

  359. You probably noticed

  360. near the end

  361. we had this phrase

  362. repeated over

  363. and over again.

  364. We heard itself

  365. and themselves

  366. in verses 12-14.

  367. Each family,

  368. verse 12,

  369. by itself.

  370. The family of David,

  371. by itself.

  372. Their wives,

  373. by themselves.

  374. The family of Nathan,

  375. by itself.

  376. Wives,

  377. by themselves.

  378. Levi,

  379. by itself.

  380. Wives,

  381. by themselves.

  382. Shimei,

  383. it's by itself.

  384. Wives,

  385. by themselves.

  386. You get the point.

  387. The question is this,

  388. why is that repeated

  389. over and over?

  390. Remember,

  391. I've told you before,

  392. repetition matters a lot,

  393. especially when we are

  394. reading the Old Testament.

  395. They are telling us here,

  396. when they're repenting

  397. by themselves,

  398. that this is not for show.

  399. It is easy,

  400. tempting at times,

  401. to repent in public

  402. because you know

  403. that's what you're

  404. supposed to do.

  405. It's tempting at times

  406. maybe to apologize

  407. for something

  408. that you're not sorry for

  409. because you know

  410. you need to do that

  411. to fix the situation

  412. and to make people

  413. feel good about it.

  414. Maybe you're holding

  415. your hand,

  416. you know your fingers

  417. crossed behind you.

  418. I'm sorry,

  419. but you know

  420. you're really not.

  421. These people

  422. are actually sorry

  423. because they are not

  424. gaining anything

  425. publicly from it.

  426. They are doing it

  427. by themselves

  428. in private.

  429. It is real repentance

  430. that's not gaining them

  431. anything in the eyes

  432. of other people.

  433. They're not using it

  434. as a manipulative strategy.

  435. They're not doing it

  436. because that's what

  437. their teacher told them

  438. they had to say

  439. to a classmate.

  440. They're not doing that

  441. because they know

  442. what they have to do

  443. to keep their job

  444. or keep moving forward.

  445. These people actually

  446. have a real

  447. and true

  448. and deep sorrow

  449. over their sin.

  450. And so,

  451. they're able to repent

  452. not just in public

  453. but in private.

  454. Now,

  455. you might also ask

  456. why the husbands

  457. and the wives

  458. are separated.

  459. Why are the wives

  460. repenting by themselves?

  461. Probably,

  462. most likely,

  463. for the same reason.

  464. They are not just

  465. sending the heads

  466. of households,

  467. these men,

  468. to repent

  469. on behalf

  470. of the family.

  471. But again,

  472. it's emphasizing

  473. for us

  474. how much

  475. each individual

  476. is repenting.

  477. Each individual

  478. is moved

  479. by their sin.

  480. Each individual

  481. sees the part

  482. they play

  483. in the death

  484. of this king.

  485. And so,

  486. when God's spirit

  487. is poured out

  488. in this way,

  489. it leads to true

  490. and real,

  491. personal,

  492. individual repentance.

  493. These people

  494. understand

  495. how much

  496. they have offended God

  497. and they are able

  498. to grieve over it.

  499. You'll remember

  500. if you were here

  501. with us

  502. when we went through

  503. the book of Nehemiah,

  504. when I preached

  505. on Nehemiah chapter 1,

    Nehemiah 1 chapter mention

  506. I shared with you

  507. the story

  508. about the English writer

  509. G.K. Chesterton.

  510. You'll remember

  511. he read

  512. a question

  513. in the newspaper

  514. asking for a response

  515. and the question

  516. was this.

  517. Write in

  518. to the editors

  519. and answer the question,

  520. what is wrong

  521. with the world?

  522. And you'll remember

  523. Chesterton wrote

  524. in a famous

  525. one-sentence answer.

  526. He said,

  527. Dear sirs,

  528. I am.

  529. I am what

  530. is wrong

  531. with the world.

  532. I'm not going

  533. to point my finger

  534. at everyone else.

  535. I'm not going

  536. to point it

  537. at institutions

  538. and say,

  539. if we could fix those,

  540. everything would be right.

  541. I'm not going

  542. to point it

  543. at politicians

  544. and say,

  545. if we could fix them,

  546. suddenly everything

  547. would be right.

  548. I'm not going

  549. to point it

  550. at government

  551. or rulers

  552. or pastors

  553. or elders.

  554. I'm going

  555. to say

  556. at the end

  557. of the day,

  558. what is wrong

  559. with the world

  560. includes me.

  561. I cannot

  562. just point my finger

  563. at other people.

  564. That is what's

  565. happening with

  566. these people.

  567. They are experiencing

  568. repentance.

  569. They have just won,

  570. by the way.

  571. Remember,

  572. verses 1-9

  573. is a victory.

  574. These people

  575. are on the right

  576. side of history.

  577. They have every

  578. reason to be proud,

  579. every reason

  580. to believe

  581. that they have

  582. done nothing wrong.

  583. And yet,

  584. their response

  585. after their victory

  586. is to repent.

  587. They're on

  588. the right

  589. side of history

  590. and it doesn't

  591. cause them

  592. to gloat.

  593. Instead,

  594. being on the

  595. right side

  596. of history

  597. here causes

  598. them to have

  599. a sense

  600. personally

  601. of their sin.

  602. It causes

  603. them to be

  604. moved in

  605. repentance

  606. towards God.

  607. And so for us,

  608. as we talk

  609. about rejoicing,

  610. many people

  611. want joy.

  612. Few people

  613. are willing

  614. to do

  615. what it

  616. takes.

  617. You want

  618. to sing

  619. joy to the

  620. world?

  621. Joy

  622. comes

  623. from

  624. repentance.

  625. Joy

  626. comes

  627. from

  628. repentance.

  629. There

  630. are all

  631. sorts of

  632. things we

  633. can try

  634. to do,

  635. all sorts

  636. of money

  637. we can

  638. spend,

  639. and things

  640. we can

  641. buy to

  642. try to

  643. make ourselves

  644. feel whole.

  645. None of

  646. them will

  647. work.

  648. Repentance

  649. will.

  650. It's when

  651. we know

  652. that we are

  653. free of

  654. guilt and

  655. shame,

  656. a guilt

  657. and shame

  658. that relationships

  659. and experiences

  660. and products

  661. cannot free

  662. us from,

  663. that we're

  664. able to

  665. experience

  666. real and

  667. true joy.

  668. And it's

  669. not repentance

  670. as we've

  671. talked about

  672. as a

  673. performance.

  674. It's not

  675. saying,

  676. okay,

  677. I need to

  678. say this

  679. to get

  680. this person

  681. off my

  682. back.

  683. No,

  684. when God's

  685. spirit

  686. is at

  687. work in

  688. our lives,

  689. we actually

  690. want what

  691. is right

  692. and good.

  693. There is a

  694. humility that

  695. comes with

  696. it,

  697. rather than a

  698. smug self-righteousness.

  699. Remember,

  700. these people

  701. have won.

  702. Their king

  703. is victorious

  704. and they're

  705. repenting.

  706. They want

  707. what's good

  708. and right

  709. and wanting

  710. what's good

  711. and right

  712. causes them

  713. to see

  714. what's not

  715. good and

  716. right in

  717. themselves.

  718. Their desire

  719. for righteousness

  720. leads them

  721. to repentance.

  722. Of course,

  723. Jesus tells

  724. us the

  725. very same

  726. thing about

  727. cleansing.

  728. In John

    John 7 chapter mention

  729. chapter 7,

  730. he's at

  731. the Feast

  732. of Booths

  733. and he

  734. decides he's

  735. going to

  736. stand up

  737. and give

  738. a speech

  739. and he

  740. says this.

  741. This is

  742. verse 37.

  743. If anyone

  744. thirsts,

  745. let him

  746. come to

  747. me and

  748. drink.

  749. Whoever

  750. believes in

  751. me,

  752. as the

  753. scripture

  754. has said,

  755. out of

  756. his heart

  757. will flow

  758. rivers of

  759. living water.

  760. water,

  761. we see

  762. this idea

  763. of life

  764. and water,

  765. of pouring

  766. something out,

  767. goes not

  768. just from the

  769. Old Testament

  770. but to the

  771. New Testament.

  772. Actually,

  773. if you fast

  774. forward to

  775. Zechariah

    Zechariah 14 chapter mention

  776. chapter 14

  777. or verse 8,

  778. you'll hear

  779. about streams

  780. of water

  781. flowing out

  782. from Jerusalem.

  783. Jesus fulfills

  784. this for us.

  785. He is the

  786. one who is

  787. pierced.

  788. He is the

  789. one who

  790. brings life

  791. to people.

  792. He is the

  793. one who

  794. allows living

  795. waters to

  796. flow from

  797. within them

  798. if they

  799. believe

  800. in him.

  801. I was at

  802. the post

  803. office on

  804. Friday

  805. mailing

  806. something and

  807. the man

  808. ahead of

  809. me in

  810. line,

  811. I'm not

  812. sure why,

  813. turned around

  814. to me and

  815. he said,

  816. the world

  817. is no

  818. good anymore.

  819. I'm sure

  820. he was

  821. referring to

  822. all the

  823. things going

  824. on in

  825. our nation

  826. with politics

  827. and coronavirus

  828. and the

  829. government

  830. and whatever

  831. else.

  832. I didn't

  833. really have

  834. a lot to

  835. say.

  836. But this

  837. is telling

  838. us we

  839. are no

  840. good.

  841. Yes,

  842. the world

  843. is broken.

  844. We are

  845. broken as

  846. well.

  847. Jesus and

  848. only Jesus

  849. offers streams

  850. of living

  851. water.

  852. He says,

  853. whoever believes

  854. in me as

  855. the scripture

  856. has said,

  857. streams of

  858. living water

  859. will flow

  860. from within

  861. him.

  862. It's the

  863. one who

  864. is pierced

  865. that offers

  866. us that

  867. and the

  868. joy that

  869. comes with

  870. it.

  871. And so

  872. remember,

  873. first,

  874. God changes

  875. us.

  876. But repentance

  877. is a scary

  878. and dangerous

  879. thing.

  880. It's an

  881. understandable

  882. that most

  883. people avoid

  884. it, right?

  885. It is risky.

  886. It might even

  887. be in some

  888. situations foolish

  889. to admit you've

  890. done something

  891. wrong, that you

  892. are wrong,

  893. at least from a

  894. worldly

  895. perspective.

  896. Repentance

  897. makes no

  898. sense unless

  899. there's also

  900. forgiveness.

  901. Repentance

  902. makes no

  903. sense unless

  904. there's also

  905. forgiveness.

  906. There are

  907. few things

  908. more dangerous

  909. than admitting

  910. that you're

  911. wrong.

  912. And so

  913. that's why

  914. it's important

  915. that God

  916. not only

  917. change us,

  918. but he

  919. also cleanses

  920. us.

  921. He doesn't

  922. just change

  923. us, he

  924. also cleanses

  925. us.

  926. I've noted

  927. before in

  928. chapter 10

  929. this water

  930. imagery from

  931. verse 10.

  932. We see it

  933. more fully in

  934. chapter 13

  935. verse 1.

  936. On that

  937. day,

  938. that's the

  939. day that God

  940. is victorious

  941. and these

  942. people repent,

  943. there shall

  944. be a fountain

  945. opened for

  946. the house of

  947. David.

  948. And the

  949. inhabitants of

  950. Jerusalem to

  951. cleanse them

  952. from sin and

  953. uncleanness.

  954. And so there's

  955. not just a

  956. pouring out of

  957. God's spirit,

  958. there's not just

  959. the change,

  960. there's also the

  961. cleansing,

  962. there is this

  963. fountain.

  964. And the idea

  965. of this fountain

  966. is that this

  967. is a place

  968. where people

  969. would go and

  970. wash and

  971. they would be

  972. set free from

  973. the guilt and

  974. shame and

  975. power of sin.

  976. That it would

  977. be safe to

  978. confess because

  979. it wouldn't

  980. lead to

  981. condemnation,

  982. it would lead

  983. to forgiveness.

  984. forgiveness.

  985. That's the joy

  986. that is coming

  987. for these

  988. people.

  989. It does not

  990. lead in their

  991. repentance to

  992. condemnation but

  993. forgiveness because

  994. this one who is

  995. pierced will

  996. wash them and

  997. cleanse them of

  998. our sins.

  999. Now this image in

  1000. chapter 1 or

  1001. verse 1 of

  1002. chapter 13 is a

  1003. simple one.

  1004. Simply it's one of

  1005. cleansing in a

  1006. fountain.

  1007. And so I'm not

  1008. going to go on

  1009. explaining fountains

  1010. to you.

  1011. You all know

  1012. what it's like

  1013. to take a

  1014. shower and a

  1015. bath to wash

  1016. away the dirt

  1017. that's on you.

  1018. It's a simple

  1019. image here for

  1020. us.

  1021. The point is

  1022. this, because of

  1023. Jesus' death,

  1024. because he is the

  1025. one who is

  1026. pierced, it is

  1027. safe to repent

  1028. and confess our

  1029. sins.

  1030. Because Jesus is

  1031. the one who is

  1032. pierced, it is

  1033. safe to confess

  1034. our sins.

  1035. Our righteousness,

  1036. our standing

  1037. before God and

  1038. other people does

  1039. not hinge on our

  1040. performance.

  1041. Our standing

  1042. before God and

  1043. other people doesn't

  1044. hinge on our

  1045. performance.

  1046. And so admitting

  1047. that we are wrong

  1048. is no longer

  1049. dangerous.

  1050. For us, it means

  1051. this, as God

  1052. changes us and

  1053. he cleanses us, we

  1054. are finally able to

  1055. admit to ourselves

  1056. and others and to

  1057. God the places

  1058. where we need help,

  1059. we need to grow.

  1060. We are able for

  1061. the first time to

  1062. speak with a

  1063. trusted friend about

  1064. our struggle with

  1065. pornography.

  1066. Maybe you're able

1067. for the first time to

  1068. finally tell someone

  1069. about your abortion.

  1070. You are able to

  1071. recognize what is

  1072. good and right about

  1073. people from the

  1074. political party that

  1075. you hate.

  1076. You are able to

  1077. know that those who

  1078. disagree with you,

  1079. while they may be

  1080. flawed and corrupt,

  1081. there's also things

  1082. about them that are

  1083. admirable.

  1084. people.

  1085. While your party,

  1086. you think, has

  1087. things that are

  1088. admirable, but there

  1089. are also things about

1090. it and you that are

  1091. flawed and corrupt.

  1092. It is safe to

  1093. finally admit that.

  1094. Your righteousness

  1095. does not stand on

  1096. there being nothing

  1097. wrong with your

  1098. political party.

1099. It is being able to

  1100. confess to your kids

  1101. that you're not a

  1102. perfect parent.

  1103. Not as a general

  1104. statement, but able to

  1105. name specifically the

  1106. ways you failed and

  1107. ask for their

  1108. forgiveness.

  1109. You no longer have

  1110. to hold up the

  1111. image of never

  1112. making a mistake.

  1113. You have a fountain

  1114. opened for you to

  1115. cleanse you from sin

  1116. and in cleanness.

1117. And so we don't have

  1118. to just choose anger

  1119. over what's wrong in

  1120. the world, although

  1121. there are plenty of

  1122. things that are wrong

1123. and a lot to be angry

  1124. over.

  1125. We can also choose

  1126. grief and sadness

  1127. and recognize the

  1128. ways that we

  1129. contribute to it as

  1130. well.

  1131. Remember G.K.

  1132. Chesterton's answer,

  1133. Dear Sir, I am.

1134. And so we see here,

  1135. as I mentioned

  1136. earlier, the gospel.

  1137. Simple, full, and free.

  1138. We can rejoice because

  1139. God changes us and

  1140. he cleanses us.

  1141. In his third book,

1142. I believe it is in

  1143. the Narnia series,

  1144. The Voyage of the

  1145. Dawn Treader, C.S.

  1146. Lewis tells the story

  1147. of King Caspian, who

  1148. goes on this journey

  1149. at the beginning of

1150. his reign to find the

  1151. seven lost lords of

  1152. Narnia.

1153. And as he goes on

  1154. this journey to find

  1155. the seven lost lords,

  1156. we meet a character

  1157. named Eustace.

  1158. And Eustace is kind

  1159. of a jerk.

  1160. He's very selfish.

  1161. At one point, there's

  1162. a problem because

  1163. they have to ration

  1164. out the water and

  1165. Eustace is taking

  1166. water that's not his.

  1167. He's taking rations

  1168. that aren't his.

1169. He tries to get out

  1170. of work whenever he

  1171. can.

1172. He is a problem to

  1173. the whole group.

1174. In fact, he has this

  1175. very tense relationship

  1176. you'll remember with

  1177. Repacheep, the mouse.

  1178. And there comes a

  1179. point at which they

  1180. land on this island

  1181. and Eustace decides to

  1182. get out of work.

  1183. He's going to go on a

  1184. walk, conveniently,

1185. right as all the work

  1186. is being done.

  1187. Walks away.

  1188. He gets lost,

  1189. unfortunately, and he

  1190. finds himself in a

  1191. dragon's cave.

  1192. Now, he falls asleep

  1193. in this cave.

1194. When he wakes up, he

  1195. has turned into a

  1196. dragon.

  1197. Lewis gives us this

  1198. image of him turning

1199. into a dragon as part

1200. of what it looks like

1201. to have sin as part of

  1202. our world.

1203. We lose some of our

  1204. humanity.

  1205. Eustace is unable to

  1206. communicate now with

  1207. his friends.

  1208. They're not even sure.

  1209. They don't even know it's

1210. him for a while until

  1211. they finally guess it.

  1212. But he's trapped in

  1213. this dragon body.

  1214. However, Edmund, one

  1215. night, sees this person

  1216. approaching him and

  1217. he realizes that it's

  1218. Eustace.

  1219. Eustace has lost his

  1220. dragon form and has

  1221. returned to a boy.

1222. Of course, he wants to

  1223. know how this has

  1224. happened.

  1225. And so Eustace tells

1226. him the story of how

  1227. he stopped being a

1228. dragon and he was able

1229. to become a boy once

  1230. again.

1231. First of all, a lion

  1232. comes to him.

  1233. And if you're familiar

  1234. with the story, you

  1235. know that this is

  1236. Aslan, the great

  1237. lion who's meant to

  1238. represent God.

  1239. Aslan comes to this

  1240. dragon and as Eustace

1241. tells it, the lion told

  1242. me, I must undress

  1243. first.

  1244. So Eustace tries to

  1245. undress himself.

  1246. He realizes he's

  1247. talking about shedding

1248. his skin and so he's

  1249. scratching all over

  1250. himself to take the

  1251. dragon scales off and

1252. he's able to take one

  1253. set of skin off.

  1254. He thinks he's good,

  1255. but there's another set

  1256. of dragon skin.

1257. He tries to take that

  1258. one off.

  1259. He's successful.

1260. I believe he takes off

  1261. three different sets of

  1262. dragon skin until the

  1263. lion finally tells him

  1264. the truth.

  1265. The lion says this,

1266. you will have to let

  1267. me undress you.

1268. We see this truth here.

  1269. We must be cleansed.

  1270. We cannot cleanse

  1271. ourselves.

  1272. We must be cleansed.

  1273. We cannot cleanse

  1274. ourselves.

1275. And so the lion begins

1276. to take the dragon skin

  1277. off him.

1278. The first tear he made

1279. was so deep that I

  1280. thought it had gone

  1281. right into my heart.

  1282. And when he began

  1283. pulling the skin off,

  1284. it hurt worse than

  1285. anything I've ever

  1286. felt.

  1287. The only thing that

1288. made me able to bear

  1289. it was just the

  1290. pleasure of feeling

  1291. the stuff peel off.

  1292. Then he tells us

  1293. after that it's been

  1294. peeled, there I was

1295. smooth and soft as a

  1296. peeled switch and

1297. smaller than I had been.

1298. Then he caught hold of

  1299. me.

  1300. I didn't like that very

1301. much for I was tender

  1302. underneath now that I

  1303. had no skin on.

  1304. And listen to this,

  1305. threw me into the

  1306. water.

  1307. Cleansing.

  1308. It smarted like

  1309. anything but only for

  1310. a moment.

  1311. I turned into a boy

  1312. again.

1313. After a bit, the lion

  1314. took me out and

  1315. dressed me.

  1316. After this experience,

  1317. Eustace begins to

  1318. change and the chapter

  1319. ends like this.

1320. It would be nice and

1321. fairly true to say that

  1322. from that time forth,

  1323. Eustace was a

  1324. different boy.

  1325. To be strictly

  1326. accurate, he began to

  1327. be a different boy.

  1328. He had relapses.

  1329. There were still many

1330. days when he could be

  1331. very tiresome.

1332. But most of those I

  1333. shall not notice.

  1334. The cure had begun.

  1335. Eustace needed to be

  1336. cleansed.

  1337. He could not cleanse

  1338. himself.

1339. And so the lion came

1340. and did it for him.

  1341. Eustace needed to be

  1342. changed.

  1343. He could not change

  1344. himself.

1345. And so the lion did it

  1346. for him.

  1347. He did not become

  1348. perfect, but as Lewis

  1349. tells us, the cure

  1350. had begun.

  1351. Brothers and sisters,

  1352. how can we rejoice

  1353. at Advent?

  1354. We rejoice because God

  1355. cleanses us and he

1356. changes us so that we

1357. can have true and full

  1358. joy.

  1359. Please pray with me.

  1360. Dear Father in heaven,

1361. we thank you for the

  1362. good news that you

1363. have given us in your

  1364. word.

1365. We thank you for the

  1366. gospel, simple, full,

  1367. and free.

1368. We ask that you would

  1369. use this story and

  1370. these words that you've

1371. given us in your word

1372. to encourage us that we

  1373. would rejoice in you

1374. because you have made it

  1375. safe to repent.

1376. And you are the one who

  1377. has provided a fountain

1378. for us to wash free from

  1379. our sins.

  1380. We ask these things

  1381. grateful that we don't

  1382. have to wash ourselves,

1383. but instead we can ask

  1384. them in Jesus' name.

  1385. Amen.
