  1. Good morning. My name is Matthew Capone, and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church,

  2. and it's my joy to bring God's Word to you today.

  3. A special welcome if you're new or visiting with us. We're glad that you're here,

  4. and we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats,

  5. but because we're following Jesus together as one community, and as we follow Jesus together,

  6. we become convinced there's no one so good they don't need God's grace,

  7. and no one so bad they can't have it, which means that God has something to say to everyone in His Word.

  8. He has something to say to people who have been Christians their entire lives.

  9. He has something to say to those who have been Christians only for a short time,

  10. and He has something to say to people who would not consider themselves Christians,

  11. people who have doubts or questions or objections to Christianity,

  12. and so it's for that reason that we turn every week to hear what God has to say to us in His Word.

  13. We're continuing our series in 2 Peter, and you'll remember that 2 Peter is a letter written by a man named Peter.

  14. He writes it to a church somewhere in the Roman Empire in the 60s A.D.,

  15. and He writes it with one hope, one desire, that these people would grow.

  16. We know that's His desire because that's how He both begins and ends the letter,

  17. and He wants them to grow in two ways.

  18. He wants them to grow in grace, and He wants them to grow in knowledge.

  19. We've been discussing the false teachers since chapter 2 who are threatening both knowledge and grace,

  20. and last week we looked at a question that we're going to continue this week.

  21. It's the question that we receive in chapter 3, verses 3 and 4.

  22. These false teachers, these scoffers, are asking,

  23. why hasn't Jesus returned yet?

  24. And since He hasn't returned yet, should we not doubt that He will ever return?

  25. They're denying a variety of things in this book.

  26. Remember, they deny the authority of the Bible.

  27. They deny the reality that Jesus is coming again.

  28. They use the denial of both of those to encourage people to live in sin, to celebrate sin.

  29. And so last week we looked at that question,

  30. why should we believe that Jesus is coming again?

  31. And we believe it because of the signs.

  32. And we had four signs.

  33. The first and foundational one is that we believe in the Bible.

  34. We believe that God's Word is our ultimate authority.

  35. It is the match that lights.

  36. And that was our foundation for the other signs.

  37. The sign that God created the world.

  38. He's so powerful.

  39. And so, of course, He's going to be able to come back again.

  40. The sign that He judged the world at the time of Noah.

  41. And so, of course, He's going to be able to judge the world again.

  42. And then finally, the fourth sign that He is, in fact, coming back.

  43. We turn again to that question this week.

  44. And Peter is going to give us some new answers to that question.

  45. Some people believe the answers last week were answers directed to the scoffers, the false teachers.

  46. And that these answers this week are directed to Christians, people who believe in the Bible,

  47. but still need assurance that Jesus is, in fact, returning to this world.

  48. Now, I'll warn you as we come to this passage.

  49. We're in chapter 3, by the way, starting at verse 8.

  50. We have some heavy sledding ahead of us.

  51. So, there's some big theological topics we're going to have to cover.

  52. To make sure we don't get off track, we're going to have a strategy heading in.

  53. And our strategy is this.

  54. We're going to focus primarily on verses 8 and 9,

  55. because those are the verses that answer our question about Jesus' return.

  56. We are going to touch on verse 10.

  57. I am not going to talk about it in detail,

  58. not because we're going to avoid it,

  59. but because we want to do it full justice next week.

  60. So, we'll look carefully at verses 8 and 9, a little bit at verse 10.

  61. I haven't completely decided yet,

  62. but I think we're probably going to spend two weeks in 10 through 14,

  63. first focusing on Jesus' return,

  64. and then second focusing on our lives of holiness.

  65. With that, as we turn now together to God's word,

  66. we are in 2 Peter chapter 3, starting at verse 8,

    2 Peter 3 chapter mention

  67. and I invite you to turn with me.

  68. You can turn in your worship guide, or in your Bible, or in your phone.

  69. No matter where you turn, remember that this is God's word.

  70. And Proverbs chapter 30, verse 5,

    Proverbs 30:5

  71. tells us that every word of God proves true.

  72. He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.

  73. And so, that's why we read now, starting at verse 8.

  74. But do not overlook this one fact, beloved,

  75. that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years,

  76. and a thousand years as one day.

  77. The Lord is not slow to fulfill His promise,

  78. as some count slowness, but is patient toward you,

  79. not wishing that any should perish,

  80. but that all should reach repentance.

  81. Verse 10.

  82. But the day of the Lord will come like a thief,

  83. and then the heavens will pass away with a roar,

  84. and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved,

  85. and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed.

  86. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  87. Our Father in heaven, we thank you again,

  88. that you have given us your word as a gift,

  89. that you are a good father,

  90. and so you haven't left us alone as orphans in a merciless universe,

  91. but instead you speak to us.

  92. And so we simply ask this morning that you would do that,

  93. you would speak to us in your word.

  94. You'd speak us words of encouragement,

  95. and you'd speak us words of challenge,

  96. and most of all, you would remind us of the grace that you offer

  97. in your Son and our Savior,

  98. in whose name we pray, the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

  99. Amen.

  100. Growing up, I was a huge fan of the TV show The West Wing.

  101. I grew up right outside Washington, D.C.,

  102. and so I had a lot of exposure to politics,

  103. and I loved the fun of the show,

  104. the wonderful banter that they had,

  105. and it was known for the camera angles,

  106. the walk and talk that the show is famous for,

  107. and of course now people look back to The West Wing with longing

  108. because it was an idealistic show,

  109. and it showed us what politics could potentially be,

  110. and as our country becomes more and more divisive,

  111. the world that The West Wing portrayed

  112. seems farther and farther away.

  113. If you're familiar with the show,

  114. you know the character, Leo McGarry,

  115. who for most of the show is the chief of staff to the president,

  116. but when we get to season seven,

  117. Leo actually has the chance to run for vice president,

  118. and so as he's running,

  119. he has a media consultant helping him to deal with the press,

  120. and his consultant reminds him,

  121. if you receive a question,

  122. and you don't like the question,

  123. one of your options is just to reject the premise of the question.

  124. Just decide you disagree with everything they've assumed before they asked it.

  125. And of course I could give you a few examples of that today.

  126. I could walk up to you and I could ask you,

  127. what did you eat for breakfast?

  128. What's my premise?

  129. My premise is that you ate breakfast.

  130. You could tell me,

  131. I didn't eat breakfast.

  132. You've rejected the premise of my question.

  133. I could ask you,

  134. what is your favorite kind of bread?

  135. My premise,

  136. you eat bread.

  137. You could tell me,

  138. you know what,

  139. I reject the premise of your question.

  140. I'm gluten free.

  141. That is what Peter does here for these people

  142. as they ask about why Jesus has not come back.

  143. Where is the promise of his coming?

  144. Verses three and four,

  145. Peter rejects the premise of his question.

  146. Your premise is this,

  147. it has been a long time since Jesus went up to heaven.

  148. But you know what?

  149. I reject the assumption that it's been a long time.

  150. I reject your definition of long.

  151. Why?

  152. Because verse eight,

  153. God has a different view and experience of time

  154. than you do.

  155. His relationship with time is very different.

  156. Now this raises all kinds of philosophical,

  157. theological questions about God and time.

  158. We are not gonna resolve all of those this morning.

  159. And in fact,

  160. when we get to questions like this,

  161. we are in very deep waters.

  162. And so it's important that we're very careful

  163. about the way we talk about it

  164. and what we articulate.

  165. We don't wanna say more than what the Bible says.

  166. We don't wanna get ourselves tied up into knots

  167. we can't untangle.

  168. And so I'm gonna rely this morning on one theologian

  169. who lists four different ways the Bible tells us

  170. that God's relationship to time

  171. is different than our relationship to time.

  172. He tells us this,

  173. God's relation to time is very different from our own.

  174. For the biblical God transcends a number of limitations

  175. associated with our experience of temporality.

  176. Now I'm gonna give you all four.

  177. You don't have to remember all of these

  178. because this verse only focuses

  179. on one of our differences with God.

  180. First of all,

  181. God does not experience what he calls

  182. the limitation of beginning and end.

  183. We have a beginning and an end,

  184. God does not.

  185. God does not experience the limitation of change.

  186. As we experience time,

  187. we change throughout it.

  188. God does not.

  189. God does not experience the limitation of ignorance.

  190. God knows perfectly what to us are past,

  191. present, and future,

  192. seeing them in effect with equal vividness.

  193. He does see all events laid out before him

  194. as one can see an entire procession

  195. from a high vantage point.

  196. I'm gonna read that last part again.

  197. He does see all events laid out before him

  198. as one can see an entire procession

  199. from a high vantage point.

  200. So we get a sense of God's experience of time.

  201. He can see past, present, and future all at once.

  202. And then finally,

  203. this is the difference we're talking about this morning,

  204. the limitation of temporal frustration.

  205. In other words,

  206. as this theologian explains it,

  207. things don't happen too quickly for God

  208. and they don't happen too slowly for God.

  209. They happen sometimes too quickly for us,

  210. sometimes too slowly for us.

  211. Everything happens perfectly for God

  212. according to his plan.

  213. And so we must recognize God as Lord in time

  214. as well as Lord above time.

  215. God's relationship to time is different than ours.

  216. Peter rejects the premise of the question.

  217. It has been a long time

  218. only from your human, earthly perspective.

  219. It has not been a long time

  220. from God's perspective.

  221. The point is this.

  222. As we come to the Bible

  223. with large and tough questions,

  224. we have to remember

  225. how finite and small and limited we are.

  226. There are things that appear difficult

  227. and challenging to us

  228. because, as the Psalms tell us,

  229. we are only dust.

  230. And so we remember that

  231. as we come up against

  232. hard and difficult questions,

  233. feeling like it has been too long

  234. since Jesus left.

  235. God and his purposes

  236. are much greater than anything

  237. we can understand and see.

  238. He sees all of time.

  239. We only see a portion.

  240. And so it's this fact

  241. that God is so much greater than us

  242. that causes some of our frustrations.

  243. The limitation is not God's but ours.

  244. This is part of why we have trouble

  245. talking about certain theological concepts.

  246. Just think about this for a second.

  247. The Bible doesn't answer

  248. all of our questions.

  249. And even when it does,

  250. we have hard time understanding.

  251. The Trinity, for example.

  252. God is three persons in one.

  253. Why is that so hard to understand?

  254. Because there's nothing else

  255. that we experience

  256. that's three in one.

  257. We don't have another point of reference.

  258. Not because God is limited,

  259. because we are limited.

  260. So that's why all illustrations

  261. about the Trinity fail.

  262. The Trinity is not like an egg, okay?

  263. The egg is not three in one.

  264. There is no other thing

  265. that is three persons in one,

  266. so it's difficult for us to understand.

  267. Eternity, challenging for us to understand.

  268. Not because God is limited,

  269. but because we are limited.

  270. We have no frame of reference

  271. for something that never ends

  272. and doesn't have a beginning.

  273. Why?

  274. Because we have a beginning

  275. and an end.

  276. So the Bible does not tell us

  277. everything that we want to know.

  278. Even the things it tells us

  279. are difficult to understand.

  280. That is not God's fault.

  281. God's purposes, His plan,

  282. His designs are far greater

  283. and more wonderful

  284. than we can understand and imagine.

  285. We have to remember

  286. the greatness of God

  287. and the smallness of man

  288. when we come up

  289. against questions like this.

  290. Isaiah chapter 55

    Isaiah 55 chapter mention

  291. spells it out for us clearly.

  292. God tells them,

  293. My thoughts are not your thoughts.

  294. Neither are your ways my ways,

  295. declares the Lord.

  296. For as the heavens

  297. are higher than the earth,

  298. so are my ways higher than your ways

  299. and my thoughts than your thoughts.

  300. Deuteronomy 29, 29

  301. tells us something similar.

  302. It says,

  303. The secret things belong to the Lord.

  304. God doesn't choose

  305. to reveal everything to us.

  306. We shouldn't expect Him to, right?

  307. You don't reveal everything

  308. about yourself to everyone.

  309. Why would you expect God

  310. to be any different?

  311. And so God is so great,

  312. He has such a different perspective

  313. on the world

  314. that He does not see slowness

  315. in the same way that we do.

  316. Remember in the book of Job,

  317. Job has all these complaints

  318. against God,

  319. and then in chapters 38 through 41,

  320. God comes back

  321. and in those three, four chapters,

  322. He basically says,

  323. I'm God, you're not.

  324. Who do you think you are?

  325. I am much higher than you are.

  326. There are things

  327. you cannot understand.

  328. And so that's Peter's

  329. first answer for us here

  330. about why Jesus hasn't come back.

  331. He says basically this,

  332. You think it's been a long time.

  333. From God's perspective,

  334. it has not.

  335. His ways are higher than your ways

  336. as the heavens are above the earth.

  337. Have some humility.

  338. Now we could come back

  339. at this point, right?

  340. And we could say,

  341. Okay, you've rejected

  342. the premise of my question.

  343. However you define slowness,

  344. let's just take that word out,

  345. there's still been

  346. so many generations.

  347. Let's talk in terms of generations, right?

  348. So we won't argue about premises,

  349. we'll just say a fact.

  350. There's been a lot of generations

  351. since Jesus has come.

  352. Why has He taken

  353. so many generations

  354. to return?

  355. This is where Peter

  356. gives us our second answer.

  357. It's not just that

  358. God has a different relationship

  359. with time.

  360. He rejects the premise again

  361. here in verse 9.

  362. God is not slow,

  363. He tells us,

  364. but patient.

  365. He's not slow,

  366. He's patient.

  367. And we see this

  368. as a character of God

  369. throughout the Bible.

  370. It's often talked about

  371. as His forbearance.

  372. God takes a long time

  373. before He brings judgment.

  374. That is part of what it means

  375. to be God.

  376. God delays,

  377. delays,

  378. He waits

  379. to give people

  380. a chance to repent.

  381. He waits

  382. because He's patient.

  383. It's not that He's inactive.

  384. It's that His character

  385. is such

  386. that He wants people

  387. to have a chance

  388. to repent.

  389. We're told this

  390. both in the New Testament

  391. and in the Old Testament.

  392. In the New Testament,

  393. in Romans chapter 2,

    Romans 2:4

  394. verse 4,

  395. we're told this,

  396. Do you presume

  397. on the riches

  398. of His kindness

  399. and forbearance

  400. and patience,

  401. not knowing

  402. that God's kindness

  403. is meant to lead you

  404. to repentance?

  405. God is waiting

  406. for Jesus to return

  407. to allow people

  408. to repent.

  409. We're told this as well

  410. in descriptions

  411. of God's character

  412. in the Old Testament.

  413. Exodus 34,

    Exodus 34:6

  414. verse 6,

  415. tells us

  416. that God passed

  417. before Him

  418. and proclaimed,

  419. The Lord,

  420. the Lord,

  421. a God merciful

  422. and gracious,

  423. slow to anger

  424. and abounding

  425. in steadfast love

  426. and faithfulness.

  427. And if you were

  428. with us last spring,

  429. near the end,

  430. you'll remember

  431. that we went

  432. through the book

  433. of Jonah.

  434. Jonah has a complaint

  435. against God.

  436. Chapter 4,

  437. verse 2,

  438. O Lord,

  439. is not this

  440. what I said

  441. when I was yet

  442. in my country?

  443. That is why

  444. I made haste

  445. to flee to Tarshish,

  446. for I knew

  447. that you are

  448. a gracious God

  449. and merciful,

  450. slow to anger,

  451. abounding

  452. in steadfast love

  453. and relenting

  454. from disaster.

  455. Jonah was angry

  456. with God

  457. because he held

  458. back his judgment

  459. on Nineveh

  460. to give them

  461. time to repent.

  462. Now,

  463. we've talked also

  464. a lot about

  465. the story of Noah,

  466. both in 1 Peter

  467. and in 2 Peter.

  468. Remember,

  469. Noah spent years

  470. and years

  471. and years

  472. building the ark.

  473. We found out

  474. earlier in this book,

  475. in chapter 2,

  476. that he was a herald

  477. of righteousness.

  478. And so,

  479. even as God

  480. was bringing

  481. the judgment

  482. that we saw last week,

  483. the judgment

  484. of the flood,

  485. he was slow

  486. to anger.

  487. He had forbearance.

  488. He gave people

  489. years to repent.

  490. He was not slow,

  491. he was patient.

  492. And so,

  493. once again,

  494. Peter here

  495. is rejecting

  496. the premise

  497. of the question.

  498. Yes,

  499. God brought judgment

  500. in the days of Noah.

  501. He was also patient.

  502. He also waited.

  503. He gave time

  504. for people

  505. to repent.

  506. Now,

  507. I told you

  508. we had some

  509. heavy sledding

  510. theologically today.

  511. One of them

  512. is God's relationship

  513. to time.

  514. One of them

  515. is this next portion

  516. of verse 9,

  517. which has caused

  518. great controversy.

  519. It tells us here

  520. we're going to take

  521. a little bit

  522. of a detour here

  523. to address this section.

  524. Not wishing,

  525. this is the end

  526. of verse 9,

  527. not wishing

  528. that any should perish,

  529. but that all

  530. should reach repentance.

  531. What do we do

  532. with the fact

  533. that we're told

  534. that God wants

  535. all to reach repentance?

  536. And we know

  537. that all

  538. don't reach repentance.

  539. Does God,

  540. this is the question,

  541. somehow lack power?

  542. Is he somehow

  543. unable to bring

  544. about what he wishes?

  545. And this is something

  546. people have spilled

  547. an enormous amount

  548. of ink over

  549. to try to resolve.

  550. I'm going to explain

  551. it to you this morning

  552. what I hope

  553. will make it simple,

  554. which is by way

  555. of an analogy,

  556. because I think

  557. what makes this difficult

  558. is the fact

  559. that it's related

  560. to salvation.

  561. salvation.

  562. We understand

  563. this intuitively,

  564. actually,

  565. when it comes

  566. to other things

  567. that God wishes.

  568. So I want you

  569. to think about

  570. the Ten Commandments

  571. with me.

  572. We have the Sixth Commandment,

  573. which is don't murder.

  574. Does God wish

  575. that no one

  576. should murder?

  577. Yeah, of course.

  578. It's the Sixth Commandment.

  579. He's commanded

  580. don't murder.

  581. Do people murder?

  582. Yes, people sin.

  583. We live in a sinful world.

  584. People don't always

  585. do what God commands.

  586. No one's having

  587. a debate about that.

  588. We understand

  589. that God commands

  590. things on the one hand,

  591. and people don't always

  592. follow it on the other hand.

  593. Take that understanding,

  594. transfer it over

  595. to salvation.

  596. Jesus commands,

  597. Mark chapter 1,

    Mark 1:15

  598. verse 15,

  599. repent and believe

  600. the gospel.

  601. Not everyone repents

  602. and believes the gospel.

  603. Of course,

  604. he wishes

  605. that all repent.

  606. That's his command.

  607. He wishes

  608. that all would repent

  609. in the same way

  610. that he's commanded

  611. and wishes

  612. there will be no murder.

  613. It does not mean

  614. that God lacks power.

  615. It means

  616. that God

  617. has given commands,

  618. and because of sin

  619. in the world,

  620. man often fails

  621. to follow them.

  622. God's commanded

  623. people not murder,

  624. people still murder.

  625. God has commanded

  626. everyone to repent,

  627. not everyone repents.

  628. And so it's not

  629. a problem for us

  630. that we're told

  631. that God desires

  632. everyone's salvation.

  633. not wishing

  634. that anyone

  635. should perish.

  636. In the same way,

  637. he commands

  638. no one should murder.

  639. In the same way,

  640. seventh commandment,

  641. he commands

  642. no one should

  643. commit adultery.

  644. In the same way,

  645. the tenth commandment,

  646. he commands

  647. no one should covet.

  648. This is how

  649. the world works.

  650. But when it comes

  651. to salvation,

  652. it becomes

  653. this difficult issue.

  654. We just need

  655. to take our understanding

  656. from everything else

  657. in the world

  658. when it comes

  659. to God and his commands

  660. and transfer it over.

  661. That's something

  662. I believe all sides

  663. of this argument

  664. can agree about, right?

  665. We can all agree,

  666. whether you're an Arminian

  667. or a Calvinist,

  668. whether you're a dispensationalist,

  669. you believe in covenant theology,

  670. you know how the world works.

  671. You know God commands things.

  672. Not everyone obeys them.

  673. Same thing is going on here.

  674. Okay?

  675. That is our theological

  676. heavy sledding for the day.

  677. And I'll point out also

  678. that Peter knows

  679. this is true.

  680. He's aware of this

  681. when he says it

  682. because he's already told us

  683. multiple times

  684. that God is going

  685. to judge the wicked.

  686. So he tells us

  687. on the one hand

  688. God wishes all

  689. to be saved,

  690. all to reach repentance,

  691. and he knows

  692. they're not going to.

  693. So we see things

  694. like 2 Peter 2, verse 1,

    2 Peter 2:1

  695. the false teachers

  696. are bringing upon themselves

  697. swift destruction.

  698. They're not going to repent.

  699. 2 Peter 3, verse 7,

    2 Peter 3:7

  700. we know the day

  701. of judgment is coming.

  702. What will happen?

  703. The destruction

  704. of the ungodly.

  705. This is often

  706. what's talked about

  707. in theology

  708. as God's two wills.

  709. He has his

  710. variety of terms for it.

  711. Some people call it

  712. his decretive will

  713. or his preceptive will,

  714. what he's declared

  715. like the Ten Commandments,

  716. and his secret

  717. or hidden will,

  718. what he's actually

  719. foreordained

  720. to come to pass.

  721. The purpose, however,

  722. of all this

  723. is not

  724. that we would

  725. untie theological knots

  726. and have

  727. a wonderful

  728. intellectual exercise,

  729. but instead

  730. that we would know

  731. God's heart.

  732. God has not

  733. yet returned,

  734. not because

  735. he is inactive,

  736. but because

  737. of his love.

  738. God has not

  739. returned

  740. because,

  741. as we're told

  742. in Ezekiel chapter 18,

    Ezekiel 18 chapter mention

  743. I have no pleasure

  744. in the death

  745. of anyone,

  746. declares the Lord God.

  747. So turn

  748. and live.

  749. you long,

  750. Christian,

  751. for people

  752. and your family,

  753. your friends

  754. who don't know Christ

  755. to come

  756. and to know him.

  757. How much

  758. more

  759. has Christ

  760. suffered

  761. for the sake

  762. of the world?

  763. How much

  764. more

  765. has he hurt

  766. for people

  767. to come to him?

  768. He

  769. is patient

  770. because of his love.

  771. It is not

  772. that God

  773. has forgotten

  774. us,

  775. that he does

  776. not return,

  777. quite the opposite.

  778. We're told

  779. in 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 5 chapter mention

  780. chapter 5

  781. that he was

  782. working to

  783. reconcile

  784. the world

  785. to himself.

  786. His patience

  787. is part

  788. of that.

  789. In fact,

  790. I want you

  791. to think about

  792. it in this way.

  793. If you're

  794. a Christian,

  795. God's patience

  796. has been

  797. undoubtedly

  798. for us.

  799. Think about,

  800. thought experiment,

  801. if Jesus

  802. had returned,

  803. when the

  804. recipients

  805. of this

  806. letter

  807. wanted him

  808. to.

  809. What would

  810. that mean

  811. for you?

  812. You

  813. would not

  814. be in

  815. God's

  816. kingdom

  817. if he

  818. had

  819. returned

  820. in 75

  821. AD.

  822. God's

  823. patience

  824. is good

  825. news for

  826. you if

  827. you're

  828. a Christian.

  829. His

  830. patience

  831. means that

  832. he brought

  833. you into

  834. his kingdom.

  835. And so,

  836. it is good

  837. news.

  838. If you

  839. are not

  840. a Christian,

  841. perhaps

  842. God's

  843. patience

  844. is for

  845. you.

  846. His

  847. patience

  848. is giving

  849. you time

  850. to repent.

  851. If you

  852. do not,

  853. you will

  854. not be able

  855. to say

  856. you didn't

  857. have time.

  858. If you

  859. do not,

  860. you will

  861. not be able

  862. to say

  863. that no

  864. one told

  865. you.

  866. We've

  867. talked about

  868. this a lot

  869. in previous

  870. chapters because

  871. this is a

  872. theme in

  873. 2 Peter.

  874. no one

  875. knows the

  876. day or

  877. the hour

  878. of the

  879. coming of

  880. our Lord.

  881. And so,

  882. the time

  883. to repent

  884. is now.

  885. If you're

  886. a Christian,

  887. God's

  888. patience is

  889. for you.

  890. It has

  891. allowed you

  892. to be part

  893. of his

  894. kingdom.

  895. If you

  896. are not

  897. a Christian,

  898. you need

  899. to wonder

  900. and think

  901. and consider

  902. is God's

  903. patience

  904. for you

  905. now allowing

  906. you still

  907. time to

  908. repent and

  909. to turn to

  910. Jesus Christ

  911. in faith.

  912. I said

  913. this a

  914. couple weeks

  915. ago.

  916. Some of

  917. you are

  918. hanging around

  919. the edges

  920. of the

  921. church.

  922. Some of

  923. you are

  924. nibbling

  925. around the

  926. edges of

  927. Christianity.

  928. God is

  929. patient with

  930. you.

  931. He will

  932. not be

  933. patient

  934. forever.

  935. The time

  936. to repent

  937. is now.

  938. The time

  939. to commit

  940. is now.

  941. Not only

  942. do we not

  943. know the

  944. day and

  945. the hour

  946. of the

  947. coming of

  948. our Lord

  949. Jesus Christ,

  950. we do

  951. not know

  952. the day

  953. and the

  954. hour of

  955. our own

  956. end.

  957. Do not

  958. take

  959. advantage

  960. of God's

  961. patience.

  962. Let his

  963. patience be

  964. for you

  965. now.

  966. His

  967. patience,

  968. it tells us

  969. here very

  970. clearly,

  971. is so that

  972. all should

  973. reach repentance.

  974. That means

  975. that everyone

  976. would turn

  977. away from

  978. their sins

  979. confessing

  980. that they

  981. have no

  982. hope outside

  983. of Jesus

  984. Christ and

  985. resting and

  986. relying upon

  987. him alone

  988. for salvation.

  989. That is

  990. what God's

  991. patience is

  992. waiting for

  993. from you

  994. if you

  995. are not

  996. a Christian.

  997. Waiting

  998. for you

  999. to repent

  1000. and trust

  1001. on Christ.

  1002. That leads

  1003. us to

  1004. Peter's

  1005. final point

  1006. here.

  1007. Remember

  1008. that the

  1009. point of

  1010. this passage

  1011. is to

  1012. answer the

  1013. question,

  1014. why has

  1015. Jesus not

  1016. come back?

  1017. Peter ends

  1018. by reminding

  1019. us he

  1020. has not

  1021. come back,

  1022. but he

  1023. will.

  1024. Verse

  1025. 10.

  1026. The day

  1027. of the

  1028. Lord

  1029. will come

  1030. like a

  1031. thief,

  1032. and then

  1033. the heavens

  1034. will pass

  1035. away with

  1036. a roar,

  1037. and the

  1038. heavenly bodies

  1039. will be

  1040. burned up

  1041. and dissolved,

  1042. and the

  1043. earth and

  1044. the works

  1045. that are

  1046. done on

  1047. it will

  1048. be exposed.

  1049. I told

  1050. you we're

  1051. not going

  1052. to focus

  1053. on everything

  1054. in verse

  1055. 10,

  1056. but I

  1057. want to

  1058. highlight a

  1059. few things

  1060. for you

  1061. this morning.

  1062. First,

  1063. the main

  1064. point is

  1065. this,

  1066. Jesus is

  1067. coming back.

  1068. God may

  1069. be patient,

  1070. he's not

  1071. patient forever.

  1072. Jesus will

  1073. return to

  1074. this earth.

  1075. when he

  1076. does,

  1077. it will

  1078. be like a

  1079. thief in

  1080. the night.

  1081. He will

  1082. come when

  1083. you don't

  1084. expect him.

  1085. Not only

  1086. will he

  1087. come like

  1088. a thief in

  1089. the night,

  1090. but he's

  1091. going to

  1092. come,

  1093. verse 10,

  1094. on the

  1095. day of

  1096. the Lord.

  1097. Remember,

  1098. we've talked

  1099. about the

  1100. theology,

  1101. the meaning

  1102. behind the

  1103. day before

  1104. when we

  1105. were earlier

  1106. in 2 Peter.

  1107. The day

  1108. is an idea

  1109. in the Old

  1110. Testament,

  1111. in the New

  1112. Testament,

  1113. that refers

  1114. to when

  1115. God will

  1116. come back

  1117. to bring

  1118. both salvation

  1119. and judgment.

  1120. God is

  1121. patient,

  1122. he will

  1123. not be

  1124. patient

  1125. forever.

  1126. Jesus

  1127. will

  1128. return,

  1129. he is

  1130. coming

  1131. back,

  1132. he will

  1133. be like

  1134. a thief

  1135. in the

  1136. night,

  1137. we will

  1138. not know

  1139. or be

  1140. able to

  1141. predict,

  1142. we will

  1143. be surprised

  1144. by the

  1145. timing of

  1146. his second

  1147. coming.

  1148. And when

  1149. he does,

  1150. he will

  1151. be patient

  1152. no more,

  1153. he will

  1154. bring full

  1155. and final

  1156. judgment,

  1157. and he

  1158. will bring

  1159. full and

  1160. final salvation.

  1161. salvation.

  1162. And so,

  1163. do not

  1164. make the

  1165. mistake

  1166. that Paul

  1167. warns us

  1168. against in

  1169. Romans chapter

    Romans 2 chapter mention

  1170. 2.

  1171. Do you

  1172. not know

  1173. that God's

  1174. kindness

  1175. is meant

  1176. to lead

  1177. you to

  1178. repentance?

  1179. For the

  1180. Christian,

  1181. then,

  1182. the encouragement

  1183. from Peter

  1184. is this,

  1185. take heart,

  1186. God has

  1187. not forgotten

  1188. you.

  1189. It may

  1190. seem like

  1191. a long

  1192. time,

  1193. and Jesus

  1194. is coming

  1195. back.

  1196. For the

  1197. non-Christian,

  1198. repent,

  1199. because God

  1200. has not

  1201. forgotten

  1202. you,

  1203. and he

  1204. is coming

  1205. back.

  1206. Just

  1207. because it

  1208. is delayed

  1209. does not

  1210. mean it

  1211. will not

  1212. happen.

  1213. And so,

  1214. for the

  1215. Christian,

  1216. live as if

  1217. Jesus is

  1218. coming back.

  1219. That is

  1220. your great

  1221. hope.

  1222. That is

  1223. what our

  1224. eyes are

  1225. focused

  1226. towards.

  1227. For the

  1228. non-Christian,

  1229. he will

  1230. come like

  1231. a thief

  1232. at a

  1233. time you

  1234. do not

  1235. expect.

  1236. Remember,

  1237. we talked

  1238. earlier about

  1239. the danger

  1240. of knowledge.

  1241. One of the

  1242. dangers is

  1243. that we

  1244. would become

  1245. numb.

  1246. Don't

  1247. allow the

  1248. knowledge of

  1249. Jesus'

  1250. return to

  1251. make you

  1252. numb.

  1253. Instead,

  1254. make it

  1255. move you

  1256. towards

  1257. repentance.

  1258. When the

  1259. day comes

  1260. like a

  1261. thief,

  1262. will you

  1263. be saved

  1264. or destroyed?

  1265. When the

  1266. day comes,

  1267. like a

  1268. thief,

  1269. will you

  1270. be saved

  1271. or destroyed?

  1272. Remember,

  1273. every sin,

  1274. not all

  1275. sins.

  1276. Every sin

  1277. deserves

  1278. God's

  1279. wrath

  1280. and

  1281. punishment.

  1282. Jesus

  1283. shows us

  1284. that this

  1285. is God's

  1286. will.

  1287. We talked

  1288. about that

  1289. God wishes

  1290. not that

  1291. any should

  1292. perish.

  1293. church.

  1294. I told

  1295. you in

  1296. Mark 1,

    Mark 1:15

  1297. verse 15,

  1298. he commands

  1299. that we

  1300. repent and

  1301. believe in

  1302. the gospel.

  1303. And then

  1304. Jesus also

  1305. tells us a

  1306. story about

  1307. a thief in

  1308. the night.

  1309. Peter is

  1310. taking these

  1311. words from

  1312. Jesus who

  1313. taught him.

  1314. And Jesus

  1315. tells us in

  1316. that same

  1317. way about

  1318. his second

  1319. coming.

  1320. I'm looking

  1321. now at

  1322. Matthew 24,

  1323. starting at

  1324. verse 36.

  1325. This will

  1326. sound very

  1327. familiar to

  1328. what we've

  1329. just looked

  1330. at at

  1331. 2 Peter.

  1332. Concerning

  1333. that day

  1334. and hour,

  1335. no one

  1336. knows,

  1337. not even

  1338. the angels

  1339. of heaven

  1340. nor the

  1341. Son,

  1342. but the

  1343. Father

  1344. only.

  1345. By the

  1346. way,

  1347. at times

  1348. like this

  1349. in our

  1350. world,

  1351. people like

  1352. to ask

  1353. pastors if

  1354. the second

  1355. coming is

  1356. soon.

  1357. The

  1358. appropriate

  1359. response is

  1360. not even

  1361. Jesus knows.

  1362. Verse 37,

  1363. for as were

  1364. the days of

  1365. Noah,

  1366. so will be

  1367. the coming

  1368. of the

  1369. Son of

  1370. Man.

  1371. Jesus,

  1372. like Peter,

  1373. focuses on

  1374. Noah.

  1375. For as

  1376. in those

  1377. days before

  1378. they were

  1379. the flood,

  1380. they were

  1381. eating and

  1382. drinking,

  1383. marrying and

  1384. giving in

  1385. marriage,

  1386. until the

  1387. day when

  1388. Noah entered

  1389. the ark,

  1390. and they

  1391. were unaware

  1392. until the

  1393. flood came

  1394. and swept

  1395. them away,

  1396. so will be

  1397. the coming

  1398. of the

  1399. Son of

  1400. Man.

  1401. God was

  1402. patient in

  1403. the times

  1404. of Noah.

  1405. He brought

  1406. judgment in

  1407. the time

  1408. of Noah.

  1409. Then two

  1410. men will be

  1411. in the field,

  1412. one will be

  1413. taken and

  1414. one left.

  1415. Two women

  1416. will be

  1417. grinding at

  1418. the mill,

  1419. one will be

  1420. taken and

  1421. one left.

  1422. Therefore,

  1423. stay awake,

  1424. for you do

  1425. not know on

  1426. what day

  1427. your Lord is

  1428. coming.

  1429. But know

  1430. this, that if

  1431. the master of

  1432. the house had

  1433. known in what

  1434. part of the

  1435. night the

  1436. thief was

  1437. coming, he

  1438. would have

  1439. stayed awake

  1440. and would not

  1441. have let his

  1442. house be

  1443. broken into.

  1444. therefore,

  1445. verse 44,

  1446. you also must

  1447. be ready for

  1448. the Son of

  1449. Man is

  1450. coming at

  1451. an hour you

  1452. do not

  1453. expect.

  1454. Who then is

  1455. the faithful

  1456. and wise

  1457. servant whom

  1458. his master

  1459. has set over

  1460. his household

  1461. to give them

  1462. food at the

  1463. proper time?

  1464. What is that

  1465. servant whom

  1466. his master

  1467. will find so

  1468. doing when

  1469. he comes?

  1470. Truly I say

  1471. to you, he

  1472. will set him

  1473. over all his

  1474. possessions.

  1475. Now listen to

  1476. this, but if

  1477. that wicked

  1478. servant says

  1479. to himself,

  1480. my master

  1481. is delayed,

  1482. or it's

  1483. familiar for us,

  1484. right, from

  1485. 2 Peter 3,

  1486. he's become

  1487. lulled into a

  1488. false sense of

  1489. security because

  1490. Jesus hasn't

  1491. come back yet.

  1492. My master is

  1493. delayed and

  1494. begins to beat

  1495. his fellow

  1496. servants and

  1497. eats and drinks

  1498. with drunkards.

  1499. The master of

  1500. that servant

  1501. will come on

  1502. a day when

  1503. he does not

  1504. expect him and

  1505. at an hour he

  1506. does not know

  1507. and will cut

  1508. him in pieces

  1509. and put him

  1510. with the

  1511. hypocrites.

  1512. In that

  1513. place there

  1514. will be

  1515. weeping and

  1516. gnashing of

  1517. teeth.

  1518. Why has

  1519. Jesus not

  1520. come back?

  1521. Christian,

  1522. Jesus has

  1523. not come back

  1524. so that you

  1525. could be a

  1526. part of his

  1527. kingdom.

  1528. If you are

  1529. not a

  1530. Christian, it

  1531. is God's

  1532. patience that

  1533. means that he

  1534. still offers

  1535. for you to

  1536. be a part

  1537. of his

  1538. kingdom.

  1539. Do not

  1540. let the

  1541. day and

  1542. the hour

  1543. surprise you

  1544. because it

  1545. will come

  1546. like a

  1547. thief in

  1548. the night.

  1549. Let's pray.

  1550. Our Father

  1551. in heaven,

  1552. we thank you

  1553. again for

  1554. your word,

  1555. even when it

  1556. speaks to us

  1557. words that

  1558. wake us up,

  1559. words that

  1560. are uncomfortable.

  1561. Ask for

  1562. these people

  1563. here that we

  1564. would be like

  1565. a wise and

  1566. faithful servant,

  1567. knowing that

  1568. your return

  1569. is sure,

  1570. and so that

  1571. we would live

  1572. in light of

  1573. that, live

  1574. looking forward

  1575. to your

  1576. coming, ready

  1577. for you to

  1578. return.

  1579. Father, ask

  1580. for those who

  1581. do not know

  1582. you, that you

  1583. would use your

  1584. patience this

  1585. morning to

  1586. bring them to

  1587. repentance, that

  1588. they would have

  1589. faith and trust

  1590. and hope in

  1591. Jesus Christ.

  1592. It's in his

  1593. name that we

  1594. ask these

  1595. things.

  1596. Amen.

  1597. Amen.
