  1. Peter, and you'll remember that the book of 2 Peter is a letter. It's a letter written by a man

  2. named Peter, and he writes it to a church somewhere in the Roman Empire in the 60s AD.

  3. And he writes it with one hope, one goal. He wants these people to grow. And you know by now he wants

  4. them to grow in two ways. He wants them to grow in grace, and he wants them to grow in knowledge.

  5. We're near the end of chapter 3. Today we have only two Sundays left in 2 Peter, this Sunday

  6. and next Sunday. And so we're coming to Peter's conclusion. Remember we've been talking about the

  7. false teachers in chapters 2 and 3. That's why knowledge and grace are so important to Peter,

  8. because both of those things are under attack by the false teachers. And the last two weeks we've

  9. taken a look at the end of the world. Two weeks ago I asked you what is the end of the world going to

  10. look like, and we saw that it's going to include the world being stripped down and then remade.

  11. And then last week we asked not what is the end of the world going to look like, but why do we care?

  12. About the end of the world. Of course the answer was that the end of the world is part of how we

  13. think about and what propels us to live lives of holiness and godliness. Peter is finishing his

  14. letter now, and he's going to give us his final thoughts. In fact, we already kind of saw one of

  15. them in verse 14, because one of his final thoughts is that we would be diligent to be found without spot

  16. or blemish. Now we're moving on to verses 15 through 17. And in 15 through 18, the very end to this

  17. letter we're going to see two basic thoughts that Peter gives us. This week it's going to be negative,

  18. next week's positive. In other words, this week it's what we don't do, next week it's what we do do.

  19. This week, don't be carried away. Verse 17. Next week, verse 18, grow.

  20. Now of course we understand why he would tell us not to be carried away, right? Because we've seen in the

  21. last two chapters we have these false teachers. So we want to make sure if there's false teaching,

  22. we're not taken in by it. However, there's a problem that comes up in this section. We've seen

  23. right at the beginning of chapter 3 that we look to the Bible as our ultimate authority,

  24. but what happens when people look to the Bible as their ultimate authority and come to different

  25. conclusions about it? How do we know that something is false teaching or not? How do we know if someone

  26. is, what Peter refers to here, as twisting? There are some things, verse 16 he tells us,

  27. that the unstable twist to their own destruction. And so we see this principle here, people twist

  28. the scriptures. How do we know when that's happening? What do we do with the fact that many

  29. people read the Bible and come to all sorts of different conclusions? What do we do with all

  30. the different denominations? In fact, if you were to Google right now, any pastor who's prominent,

  31. and then add the words false teacher, there's probably someone out there who thinks he's a false

  32. teacher. It's not hard to find. In fact, that's what happens when you become famous. Someone attacks you as a

  33. false teacher. And so how do we sort through all that? What do we do with that? How can we avoid

  34. twisted interpretations? How can we stand firm? I might add another question to this. How are we

  35. supposed to pick a church? How do we know this is a church that's going to allow us to stand firm,

  36. that we're not being taught things that are false and incorrect? Now, you might be thinking,

  37. why would I need to know that? I've already picked a church. I trust the doctrine, hopefully,

  38. of this church. I don't listen to other teachers. Well, I want you to think about a few things.

  39. First of all, some of you are going to move. I'm going to say something shocking and radical.

  40. In five years, many of us won't be here. When you move, you may have to pick a new church.

  41. I also want you to do the thought experiment of how many people in this room will be here in five years?

  42. How many of you were here five years ago?

  43. What does it take to keep a church on track, teaching the right doctrine?

  44. Well, it takes us over and over again, time and time again, returning to what it is that we believe,

  45. protecting what God has given us in his word.

  46. And so it's with that that we're going to head into this section. Now, sometimes when we head into

  47. tougher sections like this one, I give you my strategy coming up, and here's our strategy going in.

  48. We're not going to talk about verse 15. The reason we're not going to talk about verse 15 is we've

  49. already covered it earlier in this chapter. It's just talking about the idea that God's delay in

  50. coming is not a delay, but it's due to his patience. We covered that extensively earlier in chapter 3.

  51. What we are going to do is focus on verses 16 and 17, and we're going to look at two things.

  52. First of all, number one, there are people who twist the scriptures.

  53. There are people who twist the Bible. Number two, we need to stand firm.

  54. Those are the two things we're going to look at this morning. Some people twist the scriptures.

  55. We need to stand firm against that. I'm going to give you a little bit of explanation

  56. and a lot of application. And so as with that, I invite you to turn with me to 2 Peter chapter 3.

    2 Peter 3 chapter mention

  57. We're going to start at verse 15, and as we come to this, you can turn in your Bible.

  58. It's printed near the end of your worship guide. Maybe you can bring it up on your phone.

  59. Regardless of where you are reading, remember that this is God's word.

  60. And Proverbs chapter 30 verse 5 tells us that every word of God proves true.

    Proverbs 30:5

  61. He is a shield to those who take refuge in Him.

  62. And so that's why we read now, starting at verse 15.

  63. And count the patience of our Lord as salvation, just as our beloved brother Paul also wrote to you

  64. according to the wisdom given him, as he does in all his letters when he speaks of them of these matters.

  65. There are some things in them that are hard to understand,

  66. which the ignorant and unstable twist to their own destruction as they do the other scriptures.

  67. You, therefore, beloved, knowing this beforehand, take care that you are not carried away with the error of lawless people

  68. and lose your own stability.

  69. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  70. Our Father in heaven, we thank you again for your word that you've given to us.

  71. And we ask you again for your help, that you would speak clearly through your word,

  72. that you would show us our need for your grace and the gospel,

  73. that you'd show us how you meet us at that point of need,

  74. and most of all, that you would show us Jesus Christ,

  75. that we would see Him as more beautiful and more glorious than we did before we came here this morning.

  76. We thank you that we don't have to earn these things from you or prove anything to you,

  77. but instead we ask simply in the name of our mighty Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Amen.

  78. If you are a runner or a cyclist or you're someone who likes to hike,

  79. you might be familiar with the phone app called Strava.

  80. And what this app does, it's all around the world,

  81. and it's an app that allows people to track their activity.

  82. So if you go out, turn it on, everyone can see how many miles you went,

  83. how fast you are going, they can pull up your exact route and see where you ran.

  84. And so people enjoy this, right?

  85. It's sort of its own form of social media for people to encourage each other

  86. and impress each other with what it is that they're doing to stay active.

  87. Now, if we have this, of course, there's a tremendous amount of data

  88. about where people are out doing all sorts of activities.

  89. And a couple years ago, in 2018, Strava, this app,

  90. decided they were going to release a heat map.

  91. In other words, they were releasing a map of the world

  92. that shows the places where people were using their map

  93. and the routes that they were taking.

  94. Now, some of you might realize where this is going.

  95. If you're in the military,

  96. there was a lot of heat in places that the U.S. government

  97. did not want anyone to know about.

  98. There were soldiers going out on secret army bases,

  99. forward operating bases,

  100. and they were using this app and recording their activity.

  101. And suddenly, those installations were exposed to the world.

  102. In fact, there were some CIA black sites that became public.

  103. People were at these sites.

  104. They decided to go for a run, recorded it on their watch.

  105. Now, this happened to occur mostly to West.

  106. It wasn't just the U.S.

  107. There were some other militaries that got exposed by this.

  108. And surprise, surprise, it was mostly Western armies

  109. who fell prey to this.

  110. Turns out that the Taliban,

  111. when they go out on their exercise runs,

  112. they don't turn on their app to track it

  113. so they can share it with other jihadis.

  114. And so the military world was very embarrassed by this

  115. because their secret installations had been exposed.

  116. It also highlights something good for us, right?

  117. A heat map shows us where people have gone

  118. over and over and over again.

  119. It shows us what's reliable.

  120. If there's a place where people are running

  121. over and over again,

  122. that must be a good route, right?

  123. That must be a place we can trust.

  124. Either for good or for bad,

  125. heat maps show us where there's a focus,

  126. where there's something that happens

  127. by people over and over again.

  128. As we come to this passage,

  129. we have two principles.

  130. Remember I told you in our principle,

  131. our first one is that there are people

  132. who twist the scriptures.

  133. Verse 16, we're talking about Paul.

  134. He says there's things that Paul writes

  135. that are hard to understand.

  136. Many of us agree with that.

  137. And there are some things in these letters

  138. that are hard to understand,

  139. which the ignorant and unstable

  140. twist to their own destruction.

  141. In other words, there are people

  142. who interpret the Bible in a way that's wrong.

  143. And it's not just that it's wrong,

  144. it's dangerous.

  145. And so that raises a question for us.

  146. How do we know if the Bible is being interpreted

  147. in a way that's dangerous or not?

  148. Who should we trust?

  149. Who should we not trust?

  150. And I'm gonna suggest to you this morning

  151. as people who live in 2021,

  152. one of the primary ways that we determine

  153. whether we trust an interpretation of the Bible,

  154. whether we know something's being twisted or not,

  155. is whether or not there's a heat map to back it up.

  156. And I'll explain that to you in a few ways.

  157. First of all, when someone's interpreting the Bible for us,

  158. we should ask ourselves,

  159. when they provide this interpretation, this doctrine,

  160. is this something that the church has agreed about

  161. throughout time and around the world?

  162. Is there heat around this interpretation?

  163. Is this what the church has believed

  164. throughout the centuries?

  165. Is this what the church around the world believes?

  166. If not, we should be suspicious of it.

  167. If not, we should have some humility.

  168. Why is it that we are suddenly smarter

  169. than everyone else who's ever lived?

  170. How are we more competent than other Christians?

  171. How are we the ones who have this special insight

  172. that the Holy Spirit, for some reason,

  173. has never caused anyone else

  174. in the history of Christianity to see?

  175. There needs to be, when we look at doctrines,

  176. when we're assessing whether something's true or false,

  177. there needs to be a heat map around it.

  178. We want to see other Christians at other times

  179. and other places in agreement with us.

  180. And so, I'll give you some examples, right?

  181. Remember, in this letter,

  182. these false teachers are attacking the idea

  183. that Jesus is coming again to judge the world.

  184. They are attacking the idea that there's a place

  185. that's called hell that exists,

  186. that's a real place where people are going.

  187. Well, how do today we counter that?

  188. One of the ways we counter it is we say,

  189. look, that's actually not what the church

  190. has historically believed.

  191. That's not what the church around the world has believed.

  192. That's not what the church throughout history has believed.

  193. And so, this is a novel interpretation, right?

  194. This is something that's been rejected by the church

  195. over and over again.

  196. People will say things like this,

  197. well, that's just your interpretation, right?

  198. Yeah, that is just my interpretation.

  199. It's also the interpretation of the church

  200. throughout the centuries.

  201. So, chew on that.

  202. There's a subset of the heat map as well.

  203. So, we have our heat map when it comes to the church

  204. around the world and throughout history.

  205. We also have our heat map when it comes to

  206. whether there's an overlap between the heat

  207. that someone's giving you and the heat of our culture.

  208. In other words, there's a temptation.

  209. One of the reasons we might take up an interpretation

  210. of the Bible that pulls away from what the church

  211. has normally taught is because our culture

  212. is also attacking that very same truth.

  213. So, for example, it just so happens that we live

  214. in a culture that is very egalitarian

  215. and is obsessed with sexual freedom.

  216. So, surprise, surprise, it might happen

  217. that someone interprets the Bible in such a way

  218. that's very egalitarian and pushes

  219. for all sorts of sexual licentiousness, sexual immorality.

  220. Remember, that's another issue that's huge

  221. in the book of 2 Peter.

  222. Well, we need to be suspicious of that, right?

  223. We can see the heat overlap.

  224. We can see the overlap between what our culture is teaching

  225. and what the interpretation that these people are giving the Bible.

  226. It's very convenient when you come up with a new interpretation

  227. that somehow agrees with the idols of your culture.

  228. So, that's another way we look at the heat map.

  229. We assess whether someone is a false teacher or not.

  230. We assess, remember, we're pulling all of this from verse 16,

  231. whether they're twisting the scriptures or not.

  232. We should be suspicious of interpretations of the Bible

  233. that happen to please and love everything our culture loves.

  234. Now, I'll give you a caveat.

  235. Because we live in a world that's filled with people

  236. who are made in God's image,

  237. there's times when our culture is going to love things

  238. that the Bible also loves.

  239. So, this is not a uniform rule.

  240. I'll give you one example.

  241. Right now, we live in a culture that is very opposed to racism.

  242. Guess what?

  243. The Bible is also very opposed to racism.

  244. So, we don't just say, well, the culture likes this,

  245. therefore, we're going to throw it out, right?

  246. We have to do both heat maps.

  247. What we do is we look and we say,

  248. has the Bible always cared about that?

  249. And we can see, when it comes to races,

  250. God's the one who created diversity in the very beginning,

  251. Genesis 1 and 2.

  252. We see slavery as something that the Bible speaks about,

  253. even in places like Exodus, chapter 21.

    Exodus 21 chapter mention

  254. There's a ban on man stealing.

  255. We see it in the New Testament.

  256. Philemon gives us hints of where the Bible is headed

  257. in terms of these things.

  258. So, we don't always say, well, the culture loves that,

  259. so it's wrong.

  260. But if the culture loves something,

  261. and someone's going to an interpretation

  262. that also loves that,

  263. and it goes against, again, our previous heat map

  264. with the Bible and the church has taught for centuries,

  265. we need to be very suspicious.

  266. That's a sign we're dealing with someone

  267. who is twisting the scriptures.

  268. Another way we can suspect it,

  269. remember, again, these are things that are aligning

  270. with what these false teachers are doing in 2 Peter.

  271. Those are two things they're attacking.

  272. They're attacking Jesus' second coming.

  273. They're attacking the sexual ethics of the Bible,

  274. what Jesus himself taught.

  275. Well, another thing we can do

  276. is we can look at what people have to gain

  277. from their teaching.

  278. So, I had a professor in seminary

  279. who said one test you can do

  280. is see what non-Christians, who are scholars,

  281. believe the Bible is teaching.

  282. Now, this is going to sound a little bit counterintuitive,

  283. but I want you to track the logic with me.

  284. If you're a Christian,

  285. and you believe that the Bible is your authority,

  286. sometimes you have an incentive

  287. to interpret it incorrectly.

  288. Because then you get out of the moral bind, right?

  289. I believe the Bible is authoritative,

  290. so I have an incentive to believe

  291. that it doesn't teach something that's hard,

  292. because then I get out of it.

  293. If someone doesn't believe the Bible is true,

  294. it doesn't really matter

  295. whether the Bible teaches something hard or not.

  296. So, they can say,

  297. yeah, yeah, Paul actually did teach this

  298. about sexual ethics,

  299. and I don't care,

  300. because Paul has no authority in my life.

  301. Right?

  302. There's actually sometimes an integrity

  303. that comes with people who study the Bible

  304. who are not Christians.

  305. Now, I have to be careful about that,

  306. because we've talked about before

  307. in 1 Corinthians 2,

  308. there's some things

  309. only the Holy Spirit can help us understand.

  310. But what this professor pointed out

  311. is that when it comes to hard texts

  312. about gender and sexuality,

  313. people who are non-Christians

  314. are more likely to interpret it

  315. in a traditional way.

  316. Why?

  317. Because they don't really care

  318. what the end result is.

  319. They're still going to do whatever they want.

  320. And so there's a variety of tests,

  321. things that we can use

  322. to figure out where true teaching is.

  323. These are tools that we use

  324. when people come and they say things like,

  325. well, you know,

  326. there's just a variety of ways

  327. of thinking about it.

  328. And that's just your interpretation,

  329. but I have a different interpretation.

  330. Right?

  331. We all enjoy different flavors of ice cream.

  332. And I'm just going to line up

  333. the options of biblical interpretation,

  334. and I'm going to pick the flavor I like most.

  335. Well, no, that's not how the Bible works.

  336. Right?

  337. There's a true interpretation

  338. and a false interpretation.

  339. Now, these false teachers,

  340. as we've seen,

  341. give us another test

  342. for how we identify false teaching,

  343. and that is the teachers

  344. have something to gain from it.

  345. Remember, we saw earlier

  346. these false teachers are greedy.

  347. They are getting money somehow

  348. from their false teaching.

  349. And so that's another question

  350. you can ask when you're trying to discern

  351. whether someone's a false teacher.

  352. Do they have something to gain?

  353. Sometimes this takes two directions.

  354. Either they're loosening

  355. the requirements of Scripture

  356. or they're tightening

  357. the requirements of Scripture.

  358. Someone who's loosening it

  359. has a lot to gain.

  360. They're going to be able

  361. to do whatever they want, right?

  362. They're doing what's called

  363. tickling ears,

  364. so they're going to get a following.

  365. There's people who are going to want

  366. to hear what they have to say

  367. because it will allow them

  368. to do whatever they want.

  369. The other thing false teachers do,

  370. and this is,

  371. so the first example I gave you,

  372. that's what the false teachers

  373. in 2 Peter are doing.

  374. They're loosening

  375. the requirements of the Bible.

  376. Sometimes, though,

  377. false teachers do

  378. the opposite thing.

  379. They increase

  380. the requirements of the Bible.

  381. You might ask,

  382. what does that person

  383. have to gain from it?

  384. They gain a lot of power.

  385. In fact, this is how cults work.

  386. There was a cult,

  387. I won't name,

  388. that was very active

  389. in the 70s and the 80s

  390. and the 90s,

  391. and I was in a Presbyterian church,

  392. and there were some people

  393. who were involved in that cult.

  394. And I've met people since then

  395. who were involved in that cult.

  396. There seemed to be

  397. kind of an overlap

  398. between some of the churches

  399. in our denomination

  400. and this organization.

  401. What they would do

  402. is they would give

  403. very detailed prescriptions

  404. for every element of your life.

  405. They created a new law,

  406. essentially.

  407. And of course,

  408. these teachers gain power from that.

  409. Who are you going to find out

  410. the new law from?

  411. It's going to have to be them.

  412. Who are you going to pay

  413. to find out the new teaching?

  414. It's going to have to be them.

  415. What happens if they're the only ones

  416. with the secret knowledge?

  417. Well, you're going to have

  418. to listen to them, right?

  419. So we're wary of false teachers

  420. when they violate

  421. what I'd call

  422. the narrow gate principle.

  423. What I mean by that is this.

  424. Jesus tells us

  425. in Matthew chapter 7,

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  426. enter by the narrow gate.

  427. For the gate is wide

  428. and the way is easy

  429. that leads to destruction.

  430. And those who enter it are many.

  431. For the gate is narrow

  432. and the way is hard

  433. that leads to life.

  434. And those who find it are few.

  435. In other words,

  436. the Christian life

  437. is a narrow path.

  438. There are some people

  439. who gain by making it less narrow.

  440. There are some people

  441. who gain by making it more narrow.

  442. That's one of our tests

  443. of false teaching.

  444. So we have a variety of things.

  445. We've got our heat map

  446. we're looking at, right?

  447. Is there a lot of heat

  448. around this teaching

  449. throughout the history

  450. of the church

  451. and around the world?

  452. There's a lot of heat.

  453. There's a chance,

  454. you know, we should probably trust

  455. that interpretation

  456. at some level.

  457. That doesn't make

  458. church history authoritative.

  459. It makes church history a guide.

  460. Gives us some humility

  461. as we interpret scripture.

  462. Remember, scripture

  463. is our absolute authority.

  464. We also need to see

  465. if there's a cultural element

  466. that's causing people

  467. to interpret scripture

  468. in a new way.

  469. That's another kind of heat map.

  470. Is there an overlap

  471. between cultural heat

  472. and that person's

  473. interpretation of scripture?

  474. If so,

  475. we should probably be

  476. a little bit suspicious of it.

  477. Doesn't mean it's always wrong,

  478. but that's going to be

  479. a test for us.

  480. Is it something

  481. that encourages sin?

  482. Is it going to let

  483. this teacher live

  484. a lifestyle that's different

  485. from the Bible,

  486. what the Bible prescribes?

  487. And finally,

  488. we kind of have

  489. this gate principle.

  490. Is this teacher

  491. making the gate

  492. the narrow way super wide,

  493. or are they making

  494. the narrow way even narrower?

  495. Now, you might wonder

  496. what this has to do

  497. with this passage.

  498. What I'm doing

  499. is I'm giving you

  500. a little bit of explanation

  501. and a lot of application.

  502. How we assess

  503. what's twisted scripture

  504. is going to be

  505. slightly different

  506. than the people

  507. receiving this letter

  508. because we don't live

  509. in the 60s AD anymore.

  510. And so we actually

  511. have the privilege

  512. of many years

  513. of church history

  514. to look back on.

  515. We have the privilege

  516. of seeing the Holy Spirit

  517. at work for millennium.

  518. And so we're able

  519. to use this variety

  520. of ways to look

  521. and say,

  522. okay, is this person

  523. twisting scripture?

  524. Is this person

  525. pulling me astray?

  526. And of course,

  527. we see the importance

  528. of doing this

  529. because we're told,

  530. verse 16,

  531. when they twist

  532. the scriptures,

  533. they do it

  534. to their own destruction.

  535. There's a dangerous element

  536. to twisting the Bible.

  537. And so we need

  538. to have these principles

  539. in mind

  540. so that we're not

  541. taken off guard

  542. when someone comes

  543. and wants to try

  544. to pull us away

  545. by some new

  546. and novel teaching.

  547. So we're getting,

  548. again,

  549. at Peter's summary

  550. at the end of his letter.

  551. He's giving us

  552. a negative command

  553. to make sure people

  554. aren't pulled away

  555. by false teaching.

  556. Next week,

  557. he's going to give us

  558. a positive command

  559. that we run after

  560. good teaching.

  561. So that's our first

  562. principle.

  563. Our first principle

  564. is there are people

  565. who twist the scriptures.

  566. There's a variety

  567. of ways that we use

  568. to figure out

  569. whether someone's

  570. twisting the scriptures

  571. or not.

  572. There's a lot of

  573. helpful tests

  574. that we can apply

  575. as we navigate

  576. what's right

  577. and wrong.

  578. I haven't said

  579. everything.

  580. Of course,

  581. there's a lot

  582. of other ways

  583. we could assess

  584. false teaching.

  585. I haven't said

  586. everything,

  587. but I've said something.

  588. Some of those

  589. are the most helpful

  590. low-hanging fruit

  591. for us

  592. when it comes

  593. to figuring out

  594. if someone

  595. is a false teacher.

  596. I'll say this as well.

  597. We've talked about

  598. this before.

  599. In 2 Peter,

  600. false teachers

  601. hate accountability.

  602. So you look

  603. at the heat map,

  604. there's not going

  605. to be a lot

  606. of other people

  607. there keeping tabs

  608. on what they're teaching.

  609. If you're at a church,

  610. there's no transparency

  611. about the finances.

  612. No matter how good

  613. the teaching is,

  614. you should have

  615. some questions.

  616. You're at a church.

  617. This person's

  618. a wonderful teacher,

  619. not accountable

  620. to any denomination,

  621. not accountable

  622. to elders,

  623. not accountable

  624. to other churches.

  625. You should probably

  626. have some questions.

  627. Go back to my reference

  628. about there's something

  629. to gain.

  630. There is something

  631. to gain

  632. by having no accountability.

  633. Okay,

  634. so that's another way

  635. we discern false teachers.

  636. People talk a lot

  637. about the falls

  638. that happen in the church

  639. and the scandals

  640. that have happened recently.

  641. I won't say all of them,

  642. but many of them

  643. have occurred

  644. and been committed

  645. by people who had

  646. little to no accountability.

  647. It's not fail-proof.

  648. It doesn't mean

  649. that someone

  650. with accountability

  651. is always going

  652. to be perfect

  653. or won't have

  654. a scandal.

  655. It just means

  656. the odds

  657. are a lot lower.

  658. So that's our

  659. first principle.

  660. People twist

  661. the scriptures,

  662. beware.

  663. Our second principle,

  664. verse 17,

  665. do not be carried away.

  666. We're told this,

  667. you therefore,

  668. beloved,

  669. knowing this beforehand,

  670. you've been warned,

  671. you know everything

  672. I just told you,

  673. you know there are

  674. people out there

  675. who are looking

  676. to twist the scriptures

  677. for their own gain

  678. and to align

  679. with the culture

  680. around them.

  681. Take care

  682. that you are not

  683. carried away

  684. with the error

  685. of lawless people

  686. and lose your own stability.

  687. So we're aware

  688. of the threat,

  689. we need to make sure

  690. we're on guard

  691. against it.

  692. And that's our

  693. second principle.

  694. Principle one,

  695. people twist the scriptures.

  696. Principle two,

  697. be on guard.

  698. You know there are people

  699. who are looking

  700. to take advantage of you,

  701. don't be carried away.

  702. Don't be fooled,

  703. don't be deceived.

  704. Again,

  705. I'm going to give you

  706. that principle.

  707. We're going to have

  708. a lot of application.

  709. Application one,

  710. simply apply everything

  711. I've already told you.

  712. Think critically

  713. about what people

  714. are teaching

  715. about the Bible.

  716. You should ask yourself,

  717. does this person

  718. have something

  719. to gain from this?

  720. Are they making

  721. the narrow way

  722. less narrow?

  723. Are they making

  724. the narrow way

  725. more narrow?

  726. Is this person,

  727. have they capitulated

  728. to some of the idols

  729. of our culture?

  730. Are they coming up

  731. with an interpretation

  732. that doesn't really appear

  733. on the heat map

  734. of Christianity?

  735. It's not always good

  736. for someone to tell you

  737. something new

  738. and exciting.

  739. Sometimes it's very helpful

  740. for someone to tell you

  741. something old

  742. and boring.

  743. I'll give you

  744. some other ways

  745. that we can stay

  746. on guard,

  747. we cannot be carried away.

  748. One of them comes

  749. to the way

  750. that we pick our churches

  751. and the way we run

  752. our churches.

  753. The lowest hanging fruit

  754. would probably be this,

  755. do they believe

  756. that the Bible

  757. is God's word?

  758. Does the church

  759. that you're in

  760. believe that it has

  761. authority,

  762. that it's without error?

  763. Is the church

  764. that you're in

  765. holding fast

  766. to that truth?

  767. Remember,

  768. we're talking about

  769. twisting scriptures.

  770. One of the first steps

  771. in going downhill

  772. is believing

  773. that the Bible

  774. is something

  775. that's a suggestion.

  776. It's man's record

  777. of his experience

  778. with God,

  779. not God's actual words.

  780. So we need to hold

  781. that as a foundational truth.

  782. There are churches,

  783. right,

  784. that we disagree with

  785. on a bunch

  786. of secondary issues,

  787. and we also have

  788. a lot of unity

  789. with them

  790. because we agree

  791. on primary issues.

  792. One of them

  793. is the authority

  794. of the word of God.

  795. What does the church

  796. that you're in,

  797. what does the church

  798. that you're picking,

  799. believe about the Bible?

  800. Okay,

  801. I'm going to give you

  802. a second way

  803. that we stand firm,

  804. and this is something

  805. we practice in our church.

  806. Does this church

  807. have consecutive,

  808. or what's called

  809. sequential,

  810. expository preaching?

  811. In other words,

  812. does this church

  813. pick books of the Bible

  814. and preach everything

  815. in that book?

  816. That's why we're going

  817. through the book

  818. of 2 Peter slowly.

  819. We've had multiple sermons

  820. on various sections

  821. because we're committed

  822. to preaching

  823. through entire books

  824. of the Bible.

  825. That protects us

  826. from being carried away

  827. in a couple ways.

  828. First of all,

  829. we can't avoid hard things.

  830. Almost every book

  831. of the Bible

  832. includes sections

  833. that are really hard

  834. to preach.

  835. Almost every book

  836. of the Bible includes,

  837. maybe I could say

  838. every book of the Bible,

  839. includes commands

  840. that we don't want to hear.

  841. When we commit

  842. to preaching

  843. through a whole book,

  844. we're committing

  845. to not being carried away.

  846. We're committing

  847. to not cherry picking

  848. only the passages

  849. that we want to hear.

  850. Remember I told you earlier

  851. when we talked about

  852. the false teachers,

  853. their negative

  854. was that they were

  855. downplaying hard doctrines

  856. or denying them.

  857. Our positive

  858. is to make sure

  859. that we're teaching

  860. challenging

  861. and difficult doctrines.

  862. We know that we're

  863. not being carried away.

  864. We know that we're

  865. in a place that's firm

  866. and stable.

  867. Not 100% guarantee,

  868. but our odds

  869. are much higher

  870. when we're in a place

  871. where the Bible

  872. is regularly preached

  873. through an entire book.

  874. It's not always exciting.

  875. We have passages

  876. that are more exciting

  877. than others,

  878. and it's also

  879. how we expose ourselves

  880. to the whole counsel

  881. of God.

  882. Another way,

  883. is there a confession

  884. of faith?

  885. Does this church

  886. summarize their doctrine

  887. somehow,

  888. or is it just up

  889. to the pastor each week

  890. to get up front

  891. and decide

  892. kind of what he believes

  893. from that passage?

  894. That goes along

  895. with there being

  896. accountability.

  897. accountability.

  898. Is the church

  899. personality based?

  900. If it's based around

  901. one person

  902. and their ideas,

  903. that's also dangerous,

  904. right?

  905. That person could decide

  906. they believe

  907. something different.

  908. There's a reason,

  909. there's thought

  910. and intention

  911. behind a lot of the

  912. things that we do

  913. as a church.

  914. There's a reason

  915. that I don't pray

  916. the congregational

  917. prayer every week.

  918. We have elders

  919. coming forward.

  920. A variety of elders

  921. pray the congregational

  922. prayer.

  923. We do that intentionally

  924. because we want

  925. to communicate

  926. that there's a lot

  927. of spiritual leaders

  928. in this church.

  929. There's not one

  930. spiritual leader.

  931. And we do that

  932. because it's

  933. spiritually healthy.

  934. It protects us

  935. from being carried away.

  936. We're held accountable

  937. to one another.

  938. There are multiple

  939. shepherds in this church,

  940. right?

  941. This church doesn't

  942. rise or fall on me.

  943. If we have a

  944. personality based church

  945. that's a dangerous place,

  946. it's a place

  947. where we're more likely

  948. to be carried away.

  949. I'll simply say this,

  950. in all of those things,

  951. those are our core,

  952. our foundation,

  953. right?

  954. There's lots of things

  955. that make churches

  956. attractive.

  957. Lots of reasons

  958. that people are drawn

  959. to a church.

  960. Maybe there's good music.

  961. It's a wonderful thing.

  962. We want good music.

  963. Maybe there's a wonderful nursery.

  964. That's a wonderful thing.

  965. We want a wonderful nursery.

  966. But the question is this,

  967. at the end of the day,

  968. is this a church

  969. where I will be able

  970. to stand firm?

  971. Or is this a church

  972. where I'll be carried away?

  973. I want you to think

  974. about it this way.

  975. If you're buying a car,

  976. I think I've used

  977. this illustration before,

  978. there's a lot of wonderful

  979. things about a car

  980. that you might buy.

  981. It might have wonderful

  982. cup holders that can hold

  983. the largest cup from 7-Eleven.

  984. It might have heated seats,

  985. which is wonderful

  986. in the Colorado winters.

  987. It might have

  988. wonderful upholstery.

  989. There might be tons

  990. of storage room.

  991. It might have a hatchback

  992. in the back,

  993. so it's easier to throw in

  994. big packages

  995. from certain stores.

  996. Maybe it's a pickup truck

  997. and you love the bed.

  998. But at the end of the day,

  999. the question is this,

  1000. can the car drive?

  1001. Can it take you

  1002. from point A to point B?

  1003. If not,

  1004. nothing else matters.

  1005. There are many

  1006. wonderful things

1007. that we want to be true

  1008. of our church, right?

  1009. We want to have

  1010. wonderful music.

  1011. We want to have

  1012. a great nursery.

  1013. We want to have

  1014. vibrant community.

1015. All of those things matter

1016. and at the end of the day,

  1017. the question is this,

1018. is this a faithful church?

  1019. Are we holding true

1020. to the Word of God?

  1021. Are we teaching

  1022. the same things

  1023. that the Bible teaches?

  1024. I'll just say,

  1025. as an aside,

  1026. some people will be

  1027. in churches

  1028. that are unfaithful

  1029. and they'll say,

1030. well, I'm just staying there

1031. just to be a witness.

1032. I'm just going to try

  1033. to change things

  1034. from the inside.

  1035. Don't do that.

  1036. Don't overestimate

  1037. your ability

1038. to not be carried away.

  1039. There's a social element,

  1040. right?

  1041. There's a social element

  1042. to what we believe.

  1043. We can't help

  1044. but be influenced

1045. by the people around us.

1046. So we want to be

  1047. in a church.

  1048. Don't overestimate

  1049. your ability

1050. to stand in the wind.

  1051. In terms of churches,

  1052. I'll also say this,

  1053. there's no perfect church.

  1054. So it's not that

  1055. we're in a church

  1056. that does everything correctly.

  1057. It's that we're a church

  1058. that holds true

  1059. to our primary doctrines.

  1060. In fact,

  1061. we have a confession

1062. of faith at this church

  1063. and that confession

  1064. of faith says explicitly

  1065. the purest churches

  1066. under heaven

  1067. are subject

  1068. to both mixture

  1069. and error.

  1070. So we believe

  1071. as a church,

  1072. part of our confession

  1073. of faith

  1074. is that we've gotten

  1075. some things wrong.

  1076. If we knew

  1077. what those were,

  1078. we would correct them.

  1079. Right?

  1080. No one of us

  1081. understands the Bible

  1082. perfectly.

  1083. No one of us

  1084. gets everything right.

  1085. And there's a path

  1086. that's correct.

  1087. We can stay away

  1088. from false teaching.

1089. Okay, so both are true.

  1090. We don't demand perfection.

  1091. We also look

  1092. for help.

  1093. Okay, finally,

  1094. standing firm,

  1095. you've picked

  1096. the right church.

  1097. What do you need

  1098. to do next?

1099. You need to show up.

  1100. We get strong

  1101. little by little.

  1102. You know

  1103. that you can build,

  1104. you can grow fat

  1105. in a week.

1106. If I decided this week

  1107. that I wanted

  1108. to gain 10 pounds,

  1109. I'm confident

1110. I could make it happen.

  1111. Like, I don't need

  1112. to think very carefully

1113. about what my plan is.

  1114. I'd go to Walmart,

  1115. I'd buy a ton

  1116. of ice cream,

  1117. and I would just,

  1118. I'd be disciplined.

  1119. You know,

1120. I'd be focused every day,

1121. making sure I ate enough.

  1122. I could probably

  1123. show up next Sunday

1124. and have gained 10 pounds.

  1125. I don't think

1126. it would be that hard.

  1127. What if I wanted

  1128. to gain 10 pounds

  1129. of muscle?

  1130. It would be impossible

1131. for me to do that

  1132. in a week.

  1133. There's no way.

  1134. The same is true,

  1135. brothers and sisters,

  1136. for us as Christians.

  1137. We become strong

  1138. little by little

  1139. week after week.

  1140. We become strong

  1141. as we are exposed

  1142. week after week

  1143. as we're fed

  1144. over and over

  1145. by what God

  1146. has to say

  1147. in His Word.

1148. We do not come to church

1149. to have our ears tickled.

  1150. We're not here only

  1151. when we're in exciting

  1152. passage of the Bible.

1153. I want you to think

  1154. for a second

  1155. you're having

  1156. a brain surgeon

  1157. operate on you

  1158. and you find out

  1159. this surgeon

  1160. only showed up

  1161. for the exciting

  1162. classes in med school.

1163. And when he found out

  1164. they were covering

1165. a topic that was boring

1166. or he sort of already

1167. felt like he knew it,

  1168. he just skipped out.

1169. Do you want to see

  1170. that surgeon?

1171. Life is a dangerous place.

  1172. We need all

  1173. of God's counsel

1174. as much as we can

  1175. get on our journey.

1176. If we do not want

  1177. to be carried away

  1178. then we know

  1179. that repetition

1180. is what gives us strength.

  1181. This is what

  1182. every bodybuilder knows,

  1183. right?

  1184. You don't get strong

1185. by going to the gym

  1186. once a month.

  1187. That's not how

  1188. I'm going to build

  1189. 10 pounds of muscle.

  1190. I get strong

  1191. showing up

  1192. week after week

  1193. doing the work

  1194. with a discipline

  1195. and a practice

  1196. and a focus.

  1197. not because

  1198. I'm a legalist

  1199. but because

  1200. I know

  1201. that is how

  1202. I stand

  1203. firm.

  1204. And so the same

  1205. is true for us.

  1206. We are not

  1207. carried away

  1208. when we know

  1209. the whole counsel

  1210. of God.

  1211. We know the whole

  1212. counsel of God

  1213. when we're in a church

  1214. that is giving us

  1215. that week after week

  1216. when it's exciting,

  1217. when it's boring,

  1218. when it's new,

  1219. when it's repetitive,

  1220. when it's things

  1221. we don't know,

  1222. when it's things

  1223. we do know.

  1224. We are coming back

  1225. because we want

1226. this to be true of us.

1227. We want to take care

  1228. that we're not

  1229. carried away

  1230. with the error

  1231. of lawless people.

  1232. Of course,

  1233. our Lord Jesus

1234. tells us the same thing.

  1235. He tells us

  1236. in Matthew chapter 7

    Matthew 7 chapter mention

  1237. that building our lives

  1238. on His word

  1239. is like building

  1240. a house on a rock.

  1241. He says,

  1242. Everyone then

  1243. who hears these words

1244. of mine and does them

1245. will be like a wise man

  1246. who built his house

  1247. on the rock.

  1248. And the rain fell

  1249. and the floods came

  1250. and the winds blew

1251. and beat on that house

1252. but it did not fall

  1253. because it had been

  1254. founded on the rock.

  1255. And everyone who hears

  1256. these words of mine

1257. and does not do them

1258. will be like a foolish man

  1259. who built his house

  1260. on the sand.

  1261. And the rain fell

  1262. and the floods came

  1263. and the winds blew

1264. and beat against that house

  1265. and it fell

1266. and great was the fall of it.

1267. We know what the rock is.

  1268. Jesus has given us

  1269. the incentive,

  1270. the motivation,

1271. the power that we need

  1272. to follow His commands,

1273. to not be carried away,

1274. to not be taken in

1275. by things that are twisted

  1276. because we know

1277. we want to be on the rock.

1278. There's all kinds of people

  1279. all the time

1280. who are trying to tell you

1281. what the next big investment

1282. is going to be, right?

1283. You might see these ads.

  1284. If you had invested

  1285. in Amazon.com in 1999,

  1286. you would be

  1287. this kind of millionaire.

  1288. If you'd invested

  1289. in Walmart in 1992,

1290. you'd be now worth this.

1291. And if you pay us

  1292. the appropriate amount

  1293. of money,

  1294. we'll tell you

1295. the next stock to pick,

  1296. right?

  1297. Those are predictions.

  1298. What God gives us

  1299. is not a prediction

  1300. but a promise.

  1301. If we knew now,

  1302. if we knew then

  1303. what we knew now,

  1304. right,

  1305. we would have invested.

  1306. We already know now

  1307. what will be true

  1308. in the future.

  1309. That God

  1310. and his word

  1311. is the rock

  1312. that we build upon.

  1313. How much more

  1314. should we be eager

  1315. to build for it?

  1316. How much more

1317. should we invest in it?

  1318. How much more

  1319. should we want

  1320. to stand firm?

  1321. There's a couple

  1322. of movies

  1323. that have come out

  1324. recently.

  1325. One of them

  1326. is called

  1327. The Dawn Wall.

  1328. The other is called

  1329. Free Solo.

  1330. And they're about

  1331. two climbers,

  1332. each of whom

  1333. is trying to climb

  1334. El Capitan

  1335. and Yosemite.

  1336. And in Dawn Wall

  1337. it tells the story

  1338. of Johnny Caldwell

  1339. and he takes

  1340. seven years

  1341. to figure out

  1342. the appropriate route

  1343. to actually be able

  1344. to climb this wall

1345. all the way to the top.

  1346. Now if you're going

  1347. to climb this wall,

  1348. which route

1349. are you going to take?

1350. Are you going to take

  1351. the route that's

  1352. already been planned out

  1353. or are you going

  1354. to take a new

  1355. novel route?

1356. Are you going to go

  1357. try to figure out

  1358. your own path?

  1359. Brothers and sisters,

  1360. when it comes

  1361. to the Christian life

  1362. there are people

  1363. promoting and following

  1364. all sorts of routes.

  1365. But when we follow

  1366. after our Lord

  1367. and Savior,

  1368. Jesus Christ,

  1369. what we do

  1370. is we take hold

  1371. of and grasp

  1372. the trusted

  1373. and firm,

  1374. reliable route.

  1375. The route

  1376. that we find

  1377. in God

  1378. and His Word

  1379. that has been proved

  1380. by Christians

  1381. before us

  1382. for millennia

  1383. and around the world.

  1384. We go with

  1385. what is true

  1386. because we want

  1387. the route

  1388. that is proven

  1389. and safe.

  1390. We want to build

  1391. our lives

  1392. not on sand

  1393. but on the rock.

  1394. So that's why

  1395. we take care

  1396. that we're not

  1397. carried away

  1398. with the error

  1399. of lawless people

  1400. and lose

  1401. our own stability.

  1402. I invite you

  1403. to pray with me.

  1404. Our Father in Heaven,

  1405. we thank You

  1406. that Your Word

  1407. is our safe route.

  1408. God,

  1409. we ask that You

  1410. would protect us

  1411. and this church

  1412. from false teaching

  1413. and that You

  1414. would grow us up

  1415. to love Your Word

  1416. and to know it

  1417. when it tells us

  1418. things that are easy

  1419. and popular

1420. and when it tells us

  1421. things that are hard

  1422. and unpopular.

  1423. We ask that You

  1424. would do this

  1425. by helping us

  1426. to look to Jesus

  1427. who we know

  1428. is our rock

  1429. and our foundation

1430. and we ask these things

  1431. in His mighty name.

  1432. Amen.

  1433. Amen.

  1434. Amen.

  1435. Amen.

  1436. Amen.

  1437. Amen.

  1438. Amen.

  1439. Amen.

  1440. Amen.

  1441. Amen.

  1442. Amen.

  1443. Amen.

  1444. Amen.

  1445. Amen.
