  1. With that, we're going to jump right in. We are starting our series in the book of Daniel this morning.

  2. And the book of Daniel tells the story of a man named Daniel who lived as an exile in Babylon.

  3. So he's a faithful Israelite, but he's living in a foreign land.

  4. And this book takes place near the very end of the 7th century BC and then during the majority of the 6th century BC.

  5. And it's going to teach us many things, but there's going to be two primary themes that I want you guys to see.

  6. As we come to this book, it is going to both remind us and it's going to instruct us.

  7. It's going to remind us that no matter how bad circumstances may seem around us, God is in control.

  8. God rules and reigns over the nations.

  9. It's not just going to remind us, however, it's also going to instruct us.

  10. It's going to give us Daniel as a model and instruct us how we live faithful lives in a foreign land.

  11. In other words, how do we live faithfully as God's people surrounded by a culture and a world and a nation that does not honor God?

  12. And so it's with that that we are going to begin with Daniel chapter 1.

    Daniel 1 chapter mention

  13. I should also mention that Daniel provides its own summary of the book in chapter 11, verse 32.

  14. And it tells us the people who know their God shall stand firm and take action.

  15. And it's our hope and our prayer that as we go through the book of Daniel, we would grow in knowing our God and we would also be able to stand firm and take action.

  16. We're also continuing what I've been working on since 2018, which is establishing for us a strong theology of suffering.

  17. We started that in the book of Ruth in the summer of 2018 in July.

  18. And then you'll remember in fall of 2019, we went through the book of 1 Peter, finishing that in the spring of 2020.

  19. That also had a heavy focus on suffering.

  20. And now we're in the book of Daniel.

  21. It's going to complement those themes.

  22. And so we're going to jump into Daniel chapter 1.

    Daniel 1 chapter mention

  23. I invite you to open up your Bible with me.

  24. Of course, you can also find it maybe on your phone or on the Internet.

  25. And we're going to be asking this question.

  26. Where is God in the midst of suffering?

  27. Where is God when it feels like the world is pressing in on us from every side?

  28. And there's a complementary question to that.

  29. For many of you, it might be a little bit more exciting than that first one.

  30. And it's this.

  31. When do we disobey the government?

  32. And if we disobey the government, how do we do it?

  33. When do we disobey the government?

  34. How do we do it?

  35. And so it's with that, we're going to jump right in.

  36. I invite you again to turn with me.

  37. No matter where you turn, remember that this is God's word.

  38. And God tells us that his word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path.

  39. Which means that he has not left us to stumble alone in the dark.

  40. But instead, he's given us his word to show us the way to go.

  41. And so it's with that that we read now.

  42. Starting in Daniel chapter 1, verse 1.

    Daniel 1:1

  43. In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim, king of Judah,

  44. Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, came to Jerusalem and besieged it.

  45. And the Lord gave Jehoiakim, king of Judah, into his hand

  46. with some of the vessels of the house of God.

  47. And he brought them to the land of Shinar, to the house of his God,

  48. and placed the vessels in the treasury of his God.

  49. Then the king commanded Ashpenaz, his chief eunuch,

  50. to bring some of the people of Israel, both of the royal family and of the nobility,

  51. youths without blemish, of good appearance and skillful in all wisdom,

  52. endowed with knowledge, understanding, learning,

  53. and competent to stand in the king's palace,

  54. and to teach them the literature and language of the Chaldeans.

  55. Verse 5.

  56. The king assigned them a daily portion of the food that the king ate,

  57. and of the wine that he drank.

  58. They were to be educated for three years,

  59. and at the end of that time they were to stand before the king.

  60. Among these were Daniel, Hananiah,

  61. Mishael, and Azariah of the tribe of Judah.

  62. And the chief of the eunuchs gave them names.

  63. Daniel he called Belteshazzar,

  64. Hananiah he called Shadrach,

  65. Mishael he called Meshach,

  66. and Azariah he called Abednego.

  67. Verse 6.

  68. But Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself with the king's food

  69. or with the wine that he drank.

  70. Therefore he asked the chief of the eunuchs to allow him not to defile himself.

  71. And God gave Daniel favor and compassion in the sight of the chief of the eunuchs.

  72. And the chief of the eunuchs said to Daniel,

  73. I fear my lord the king who assigned your food and your drink.

  74. For why should he see that you were in worse condition than the youths who were of your own age?

  75. So you would endanger my head with the king.

  76. Then Daniel said to the steward whom the chief of the eunuchs had assigned over Daniel,

  77. Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah,

  78. Test your servants for ten days.

  79. Let us be given vegetables to eat and water to drink.

  80. Then let our appearance and the appearance of the youths who eat the king's food be observed by you

  81. and deal with your servants according to what you see.

  82. So he listened to them in this matter and tested them for ten days.

  83. Verse 15.

  84. At the end of ten days it was seen that they were better in appearance and fatter in flesh

  85. than all the youths who ate the king's food.

  86. So the steward took away their food and wine they were to drink and gave them vegetables.

  87. Verse 17.

  88. As for these four youths, God gave them learning and skill in all literature and wisdom,

  89. and Daniel had understanding in all visions and dreams.

  90. At the end of the time when the king had commanded that they should be brought in,

  91. the chief of the eunuchs brought them in before Nebuchadnezzar.

  92. And the king spoke with them, and among all of them none was found like Daniel,

  93. Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah.

  94. Therefore they stood before the king.

  95. And in every matter of wisdom and understanding about which the king inquired of them,

  96. he found them ten times better than all the magicians and enchanters that were in all his kingdom.

  97. And Daniel was there until the first year of King Cyrus.

  98. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  99. Our Father in heaven, we thank you again for your word that can go forward,

  100. whether there's snow or there's sun.

  101. And we thank you that you've allowed us to gather together virtually this morning

  102. to look at Daniel chapter 1.

    Daniel 1 chapter mention

  103. We ask that you would help us.

  104. You'd help us if we experienced technical glitches.

  105. You'd give us patience.

  106. Father, we ask that you would help our minds,

  107. that we'd be able to pay attention with all the distractions around us.

  108. And most of all, that you would speak clearly through your word to us,

  109. that we would be able to see Jesus Christ.

  110. And we ask these things,

  111. knowing that we haven't earned them,

  112. but instead we ask them in his name.

  113. Amen.

  114. For those of you who are kids,

  115. or maybe those of you who have been kids at some point in time,

  116. I want you to imagine with me for a second

  117. that your parents have given you clear instructions

  118. about what you should and should not do.

  119. And not only have they given you these clear instructions,

  120. they've also outlined for you

  121. what's going to happen if you disobey.

  122. They've told you in advance

  123. what the punishments are going to be.

  124. And so you have a lot of clarity.

  125. You can choose one way or the other.

  126. This is similar to the way God often works with his people,

  127. especially in the Old Testament.

  128. He gives them blessings and cursings

  129. based on whether they obey or disobey.

  130. And this is what we find ourselves in the middle of

  131. in Daniel chapter 1.

    Daniel 1 chapter mention

  132. The prophet Jeremiah has been prophesying

  133. for some time to Israel,

  134. warning them about their sins.

  135. He's been telling them about the fact

  136. that they've been worshiping other gods.

  137. In fact, it's gotten so bad in Israel

  138. that they're in some places practicing child sacrifice

  139. in the same way that the pagans are.

  140. They're breaking God's Ten Commandments,

  141. not just one or two of them, but many of them.

  142. And so Jeremiah predicts what's going to happen.

  143. He predicts the fall of Jerusalem.

  144. And so we see at the beginning of this book

  145. the fulfillment of what God has been telling his people

  146. through his prophets for years.

  147. We're told, verse 1,

  148. this is the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim.

  149. Jehoiakim's one of the kings

  150. that Jeremiah has been coming and prophesying to.

  151. In fact, in Jeremiah chapter 25,

    Jeremiah 25 chapter mention

  152. in Jeremiah chapter 29,

    Jeremiah 29 chapter mention

  153. he tells them that there is going to be this exile,

  154. that they're going to be taken by Babylon.

  155. And so that's what we see here in this passage.

  156. Nebuchadnezzar, the king of Babylon,

  157. comes as God's agent in some ways

  158. and does what God has promised for years.

  159. We're seeing the very beginning of the exile

  160. of God's people from Israel to Babylon.

  161. And this is an exile that happens in multiple stages,

  162. so it doesn't happen all at once.

  163. If you're someone who does dates,

  164. you probably remember the exile is beginning in 586.

  165. What we're looking at here is actually 605 BC.

  166. So a number of years before the exile is finalized,

  167. we see the very first step.

  168. And the very first step is this,

  169. and it's devastating.

  170. Nebuchadnezzar comes and he takes a variety of things.

  171. We see verses 1 and 2,

  172. he takes Jerusalem, the city.

  173. Verse 2, he takes an affront to God himself

  174. by taking away the vessels of the house of God.

  175. This is a way of showing his God's dominance over Yahweh.

  176. And then in verses 3 and 4,

  177. we see, and this sets us up really for the rest of this book,

  178. especially chapters 1 through 6,

  179. that he takes Israel's best and their brightest.

  180. He takes the royal family,

  181. the end of verse 3,

  182. and the nobility used without blemish.

  183. So these are the cream of the crop here.

  184. They look good, they're handsome,

  185. and they're really smart.

  186. There's skill in all wisdom,

  187. endowed with knowledge, understanding,

  188. learning, and competent to stand in the king's palace.

  189. He does sort of a brain drain here on Jerusalem.

  190. He steals their smartest and their best

  191. to be trained, not as Israelites,

  192. but to become good Babylonians.

  193. And so kids, I want you to do another thought experiment with me.

  194. Not that you have disobeyed your parents this time,

  195. but in fact that you're a faithful son or a faithful daughter.

  196. You've done the best you can,

  197. but suddenly you're taken away.

  198. You no longer live with your parents.

  199. You've been put in a boarding school,

  200. which is a place where you live and eat and sleep

  201. at your school, not your home.

  202. And in addition to that,

  203. not only are you at a boarding school,

  204. you're at a boarding school in a different country.

  205. So you've been taken from the United States.

  206. Maybe you're in a boarding school in France or Germany.

  207. It's a place where they speak a language that you don't speak.

  208. And so there's a variety of ways

  209. in which you are a fish out of water here.

  210. That's what's happening for Daniel and his friends.

  211. And I mentioned you kids

  212. because Daniel at this time is a youth.

  213. We're told the very beginning of verse four,

  214. these are youths without blemish.

  215. Many people think that they were young teenagers at this point.

  216. So we're talking maybe someone who's in eighth or ninth or 10th grade

  217. being taken away,

  218. separated from their support structures

  219. and put into an entirely different education system.

  220. And it's with that that the king of Babylon

  221. begins his indoctrination plan for them.

  222. He has a multifaceted plan here.

  223. First of all, verse four, he's going to teach them

  224. the literature and language of the Chaldeans.

  225. Now, this would have not been innocent.

  226. This would have included him teaching about the gods of Babylon.

  227. He would have been teaching them potentially about divination and astrology.

  228. And so they're going to be educated,

  229. not in the way of the Israelites,

  230. but the way of the Babylonians,

  231. not in the way of their God,

  232. but in the way of pagan gods.

  233. He doesn't leave it just at education, though.

  234. He's going to allure them with the good life.

  235. Verse five, they're going to have wonderful food.

  236. They're going to have this daily portion

  237. of the meat and wine that the king eats.

  238. They are going to eat well.

  239. They are going to have the good things in life.

  240. They are going to see how wonderful it's going to be

  241. to be a part of Babylon.

  242. This education program, verse five,

  243. again, it's going to last for three years.

  244. It's going to be long enough to change them

  245. and indoctrinate them.

  246. And then we see something equally insidious in verse seven.

  247. He's going to change their names.

  248. Now, of course, we know how important

  249. and fundamental our names are to our identity,

  250. how we think about ourselves as people.

  251. And what's going on here is not just a name change,

  252. but a fundamental identity change.

  253. The names that these youths have when they show up,

  254. their Hebrew names,

  255. are all names that say something about God,

  256. about Yahweh and their trust in him.

  257. Now, we don't know the meanings of all the new names,

  258. but the ones that we do point not to Yahweh,

  259. but they point to the gods of the Babylonians.

  260. And so they are being given here pagan names,

  261. names that point not to trust in the God of Israel,

  262. but trust in the God of Babylon.

  263. And so the point is this,

  264. their attempt by Nebuchadnezzar here to brainwash them.

  265. He wants them to forget Israel.

  266. He wants them to forget the land they've come from.

  267. He wants to give them this new identity.

  268. He wants to make them into wonderful, good Babylonians,

  269. people who value what they value,

  270. people who no longer love and value

  271. what the God of Israel loves and values.

  272. It is a full frontal assault here

  273. on these youths from Israel.

  274. And so it's at this that we see

  275. part of the reason we're studying this book,

  276. which is it's not that foreign from us today.

  277. We also live in a culture

  278. that looks to shape and educate and transform us.

  279. We have a culture that looks to see our identity

  280. as something other than people who love and worship God.

  281. It wants to take us,

  282. our hearts captive with a good life.

  283. While we may not all be young people

  284. who are transferring countries and schools,

  285. we are people who live in a place

  286. where we feel the pressure of the world around us

  287. to conform us to its ways,

  288. its ways of thinking,

  289. its narratives,

  290. what it loves and what it values.

  291. We see this in a variety of ways.

  292. We see this in the way the culture speaks to us

  293. from shows and media.

  294. Last week, I used the illustration of The Queen's Gambit,

  295. which is a Netflix show.

  296. So obviously, I think there are good things on Netflix.

  297. There are also things on Netflix

  298. that are an absolute abomination.

  299. There are things that celebrate

  300. and delight in what God hates and despises.

  301. There are things that are meant to take our hearts

  302. and cause them to value

  303. and to love what God warns us about.

  304. There's all sorts of stories being told

  305. that tell us things that are different

  306. than the story God wants to tell us.

  307. There are all sorts of values

  308. that we're supposed to adopt

  309. that are different than the values

  310. that God wants us to adopt.

  311. And so while we may not be taught

  312. the language and literature of the Chaldeans,

  313. we are constantly being taught

  314. the language and the literature

  315. of Western secularism.

  316. We, like Daniel and his friends,

  317. are under pressure.

  318. And we don't just see this in our movies,

  319. in our media.

  320. We also have it in our education system as well.

  321. We have, on the one hand,

  322. some schools that hold up

  323. a high value of morality and ethics.

  324. And yet that's all it is.

  325. It ends up being this dead morality.

  326. It's moralism where we're meant

  327. to be good people for the sake of ourselves.

  328. And then there's schools, on the other hand,

  329. that teach something equally dangerous.

  330. Maybe they teach us to value

  331. scientism above everything else.

  332. They want us to forget the fact

  333. that even that has certain types

  334. of faith commitments.

  335. Even that involves

  336. unexamined assumptions

  337. and operating principles.

  338. And so we feel the conflict

  339. just as Daniel feels the conflict.

  340. We also live in this kind of pressured world.

  341. And so just like Daniel,

  342. we're also going to come in

  343. to places of conflict.

  344. If we are living in a world

  345. where there's tension,

  346. there's ultimately going to be

  347. conflict and opposition.

  348. And so that's what we see next

  349. in this story.

  350. We've been set up in verses 1 through 7

  351. for the problems of this world

  352. that Daniel finds himself in.

  353. And now he gets into direct conflict

  354. with what he's being asked to do.

  355. Verse 8,

  356. Daniel resolved that he would not

  357. defile himself with the king's food

  358. or with the wine that he drank.

  359. And so in the midst of this pagan world,

  360. Daniel wants to retain

  361. his distinctive faith,

  362. his identity.

  363. And we're not told in this passage

  364. exactly why it is

  365. that this meat and this wine

  366. would defile him.

  367. That's not spelled out for us.

  368. And so it's actually become

  369. a matter of great debate

  370. what exactly is objectionable about this.

  371. There are probably two general camps.

  372. I won't drag us down

  373. into a bunny trail here,

  374. but I'll give you a broad overview.

  375. Some people are convinced

  376. that Daniel's being asked

  377. to do something

  378. that would break the law of God,

  379. whether it's violating kosher laws,

  380. whether this food

  381. has been sacrificed to idols.

  382. There's something about it

  383. that would cause him to sin.

  384. So that's one camp.

  385. There's another camp that argues,

  386. no, there's not anything sinful

  387. about this meat and this wine,

  388. but we see that it's associated

  389. so closely with the king

  390. that Daniel wants to make

  391. a statement to himself

  392. that he relies on God.

  393. He doesn't rely on Nebuchadnezzar.

  394. Between those two,

  395. I'll just simply say,

  396. I lean to believing that Daniel

  397. here is being asked

  398. to violate the law of God.

  399. And I believe that for two reasons.

  400. First, in verse eight,

  401. we see the word defile twice.

  402. Remember that repetition

  403. is very important in the Bible

  404. and defile here is a strong word.

  405. It's hard for me to believe

  406. that Daniel would believe

  407. he's defiling himself

  408. unless it was something

  409. that was very sinful.

  410. So that's one reason I believe

  411. that's the way this passage is leaning.

  412. The second reason I believe it is this,

  413. Daniel's taking an incredible risk.

  414. Many people believe

  415. Daniel's risking his life

  416. by doing this.

  417. And so it would seem a strange thing

  418. for him to pick this

  419. of all the things

  420. to risk his life over

  421. unless he believed

  422. he had to do this

  423. to honor God.

  424. And so it's with that

  425. we're going to head into this tension.

  426. Daniel's being asked

  427. to do something

  428. that would violate his conscience

  429. and he puts together

  430. a strategy.

  431. First of all,

  432. he goes to the chief of the eunuchs.

  433. Remember we met this man

  434. in verse three.

  435. His name is Ashpenaz.

  436. And he goes to him first

  437. asking if he can avoid

  438. this food.

  439. Now we find out

  440. verse nine

  441. that God has given Daniel

  442. favor in the eyes

  443. of this man.

  444. But even that

  445. is not enough.

  446. Verse 10,

  447. the chief of the eunuchs

  448. says to Daniel,

  449. I fear the Lord my king.

  450. I fear Nebuchadnezzar.

  451. I don't want

  452. anything bad

  453. to happen to me.

  454. And it could be dangerous,

  455. right?

  456. Verse 10,

  457. why should he see

  458. that you are in worse condition?

  459. So you would endanger

  460. my head with the king.

  461. In other words,

  462. I could get killed

  463. if I do what you ask.

  464. Which underscores also

  465. the threat for Daniel.

  466. Of course,

  467. we think he could get killed

  468. as well for asking this.

  469. If the king finds out

  470. that he's not willing

  471. to eat his food.

  472. So the stakes are very high.

  473. Daniel doesn't have success

  474. here though.

  475. Although his favor

  476. does help him.

  477. Verse nine,

  478. he has that favor.

  479. And so this eunuch

  480. does not go and tell

  481. on Daniel.

  482. He doesn't help him.

  483. He also doesn't hurt him.

  484. Daniel, however,

  485. continues to be persistent.

  486. Also note,

  487. by the way,

  488. verse 10,

  489. there's this emphasis

  490. on the eunuch

  491. fearing Nebuchadnezzar.

  492. The implication is

  493. the eunuch fears

  494. the king of Babylon.

  495. Daniel fears Yahweh.

  496. Daniel fears his king.

  497. Daniel fears God.

  498. Daniel's not going

  499. to give up though.

  500. He keeps pushing.

  501. Verse 11,

  502. he moves down

  503. the pole here

  504. of authority.

  505. He moves down

  506. the chain of command.

  507. The eunuchs told him no.

  508. Okay,

  509. we're going to go

  510. ask the steward.

  511. Verse 11,

  512. he goes to the steward

  513. and asks him

  514. for this test.

  515. Give us these vegetables

  516. to eat

  517. so we don't violate

  518. our consciences.

  519. And the steward here

  520. agrees to the test.

  521. He allows them

  522. to be tested

  523. for 10,

  524. for 10 days.

  525. And I wanted to stop here

  526. and I want you to notice

  527. for a second,

  528. this is something

  529. we're going to come back to

  530. again in the book of Daniel,

  531. that when it comes

  532. to navigating

  533. these difficult situations,

  534. Daniel has a wide

  535. repertoire of approaches.

  536. He has different strategies

  537. for different situations.

  538. Not everything

  539. has to be handled

  540. in the same way.

  541. And so there are

  542. some Christians today

  543. when they talk about

  544. our conflict with the culture,

  545. they make it sound like

  546. there's only one way

  547. to deal with conflict.

  548. It's to be very loud

  549. and aggressive about it.

  550. We've got to stamp

  551. our flag in the ground

  552. and let everyone know

  553. what we're doing

  554. and why we're doing it.

  555. We'll talk more about that

  556. in a little bit,

  557. but I just want to note

  558. that here.

  559. Daniel actually chooses

  560. sort of an under-the-radar approach.

  561. He chooses an approach

  562. where not everyone knows

  563. what he's up to.

  564. He follows this principle

  565. that I'm going to return to

  566. again in the book of Daniel

  567. from Matthew 10, verse 16

    Matthew 10:16

  568. that Jesus gives us.

  569. He tells us,

  570. I'm sending you out

  571. in the world

  572. and so I want you

  573. to be wise as serpents

  574. but innocent as doves.

  575. And that's what Daniel does here.

  576. He's innocent as a dove.

  577. He doesn't break God's law.

  578. He's wise as a servant

  579. or as wise as a serpent.

  580. He's smart about how he goes

  581. about avoiding this meat

  582. and this wine.

  583. Daniel's faithful.

  584. He doesn't compromise.

  585. He's also wise and strategic.

  586. And so that's the opposition

  587. that Daniel finds himself in.

  588. There's this tension

  589. that leads to conflict.

  590. We've named our tension.

  591. We are also going to face conflict.

  592. Sorry, I saw a connection problem there

  593. with the Facebook.

  594. So Daniel's in tension.

  595. We're in tension.

  596. Daniel faces conflict.

  597. If we live in this world,

  598. we expect we're going to face

  599. conflict as well.

  600. We're going to talk more about this

  601. when we get to chapter 3 of Daniel.

  602. But there's a category here

  603. that we need to know as Christians

  604. and that's the category

  605. of civil disobedience.

  606. That's part of what Daniel's

  607. participating in here.

  608. And we find this principle

  609. well articulated in Acts chapter 5.

    Acts 5 chapter mention

  610. Peter and the disciples

  611. are preaching.

  612. They're brought before the council here

  613. to answer for what they're doing.

  614. And the high priest tells them,

  615. verse 28,

  616. this is again Acts 5,

  617. we strictly charge you

  618. not to teach in this name.

  619. That's Jesus' name.

  620. Yet here you have filled up Jerusalem

  621. with your teaching

  622. and you intend to bring

  623. this man's blood upon us.

  624. And here's the money verse,

  625. Acts chapter 5,

    Acts 5:29

  626. verse 29,

  627. Peter and the apostles answered,

  628. we must obey God

  629. rather than men.

  630. Daniel chooses to obey God

  631. rather than men.

  632. We also will be put in situations

  633. where we have to choose

  634. to obey God

  635. rather than men.

  636. We'll be put in situations

  637. where we're in conflict

  638. with our government.

  639. And so I'll give you a few examples.

  640. Disobeying the government

  641. when it commands us

  642. to participate in evil.

  643. We have some legislation

  644. going on right now

  645. in our country.

  646. We have a couple ones.

  647. One's called the Equality Act.

  648. One is called the Do Not Harm Act.

  649. And these of course

  650. sound like wonderful things, right?

  651. Who's against equality?

  652. Who wants to harm someone?

  653. The Equality Act's

  654. made its way through Congress.

  655. It's now going towards the Senate.

  656. And it can be used

  657. for a variety of things.

  658. Of people who've studied it,

  659. some people believe

  660. that it could be used

  661. to compel doctors

  662. who don't want to participate

  663. in abortions

  664. to participate in them anyway

  665. if they want to continue

  666. to be doctors.

  667. And so it would do away

  668. with a lot of the religious

  669. freedom protections

  670. that people have right now.

  671. It could be used potentially

  672. to compel Christian businesses

  673. to participate in ceremonies

  674. that they believe

  675. celebrate things

  676. that are evil.

  677. That they would call good

  678. what God calls evil.

  679. It could narrow,

  680. just in general,

  681. our abilities

  682. to have religious liberty exemptions.

  683. And it could be used

  684. to impose upon

  685. some of our freedoms

  686. as a church.

  687. Now I tell you this

  688. not to be alarmist.

  689. We don't know exactly

  690. what's going to happen

  691. in the future.

  692. Of course this could be defeated.

  693. But it's an example

  694. of the sorts of things

  695. that we need to be prepared

  696. for as Christians.

  697. When it comes to suffering,

  698. when it comes to persecution,

  699. I want us to have thought

  700. about it beforehand.

  701. We want to have meditated

  702. on God's word

  703. so that we're prepared

  704. when the challenge comes.

  705. This we can assume

  706. is what Daniel

  707. has been doing, right?

  708. How is he able

  709. to stand so firm

  710. as a 13 and 14 year old?

  711. Well,

  712. most likely he's been

  713. meditating on God's word.

  714. He's been taught God's ways

  715. and God's law.

  716. And so this pressure,

  717. he's not going to cave under it.

  718. Now we'll see later

  719. in the book of Daniel,

  720. we'll have plenty of opportunity

  721. to also talk about

  722. Daniel's prayer life

  723. and the ways

  724. that that fortifies him.

  725. Regardless to say,

  726. there are challenges for Daniel.

  727. There are also challenges for us.

  728. There are times and places

  729. when we're going to have

  730. to say no to our government

  731. in the same way

  732. that Daniel has

  733. because of our allegiance

  734. and our loyalty

  735. and our faithfulness

  736. to Jesus Christ.

  737. And so that's one

  738. of the major questions

  739. of Daniel.

  740. When do we do that

  741. and how do we do that?

  742. How do we survive

  743. in the midst

  744. of this culture

  745. with pressure on us?

  746. I'm going to pause here

  747. for a second.

  748. So we're asking

  749. these heavy questions.

  750. We've seen

  751. the general challenge

  752. and the specific challenge,

  753. both for Daniel

  754. and for us.

  755. And I asked the question

  756. at the very beginning,

  757. where is God

  758. in the midst of suffering?

  759. And so before we talk

  760. about what we need to do,

  761. I want to talk about

  762. what God is doing

  763. and has done

  764. in this passage.

  765. In the midst

  766. of all these problems,

  767. the vessels of the temple,

  768. remember verse 2,

  769. have been taken to Babylon.

  770. It looks like God

  771. and his people

  772. have been defeated.

  773. It looks like

  774. the gods of Babylon

  775. are more powerful

  776. than the God of Israel

  777. and yet,

  778. nothing could be farther

  779. from the truth.

  780. In the midst

  781. of this passage,

  782. throughout,

  783. from beginning to end,

  784. we see that God

  785. is in control.

  786. So I invite you

  787. to look with me

  788. in detail at these verses.

  789. We see in verse 2,

  790. verse 9,

  791. and verse 17,

  792. that it says either God

  793. or the Lord

  794. gave something.

  795. Verse 2,

  796. the Lord gave Jehoiakim,

  797. king of Judah,

  798. into his hand.

  799. Why was Babylon

  800. able to defeat Israel?

  801. Because God

  802. allowed them to.

  803. Verse 9,

  804. God gives something else.

  805. God gave Daniel

  806. favor and compassion

  807. in the sight

  808. of the chief of the eunuchs.

  809. Why was Daniel

  810. not killed

  811. simply for his request

  812. not to eat meat and wine?

  813. Because God

  814. was at work

  815. protecting and preserving him.

  816. God continues

  817. to be active

  818. in this passage.

  819. And then verse 17,

  820. we see God

  821. gives something else.

  822. As for these four youths,

  823. God gave them

  824. learning and skill

  825. in all literature

  826. and wisdom

  827. and Daniel had understanding

  828. in all visions

  829. and dreams.

  830. Why were they so smart?

  831. Why were they so skilled?

  832. Why were they the ones

  833. taken from Israel?

  834. Because God

  835. blessed them.

  836. God was at work

  837. giving them

  838. the skills

  839. they needed

  840. to survive

  841. in this foreign land.

  842. And so before

  843. we talk about

  844. anything else,

  845. before we move forward

  846. in knowing

  847. how it is

  848. that we respond

  849. and stand firm.

  850. Remember,

  851. the people who know

  852. their God

  853. will stand firm

  854. and take action.

  855. The first part

  856. is that we know

  857. our God.

  858. Our God

  859. is at work

  860. no matter

  861. the circumstances.

  862. No matter

  863. what is going

  864. on around us,

  865. God still

  866. rules and reigns

  867. over the nations.

  868. He rules

  869. and reigns

  870. over Babylon

  871. in this passage

  872. and he rules

  873. and reigns

  874. over every nation

  875. today.

  876. God is still

  877. in control.

  878. Now,

  879. it's not just

  880. those three verses.

  881. It's not just

  882. 2, 9, and 17,

  883. but we see God

  884. at work in other ways

  885. here.

  886. You'll notice

  887. verse 6,

  888. Daniel is not

  889. sent in alone.

  890. God sends him

  891. with friends.

  892. Daniel doesn't

  893. have to figure it

  894. all out by himself.

  895. He has

  896. Hananiah,

  897. Mishael,

  898. Azariah

  899. to help him

  900. and be with him.

  901. And so that's

  902. God's help

  903. in the general

  904. situation, right?

  905. He's giving favor.

  906. He's giving Israel

  907. over into the hands

  908. of Babylon.

  909. He's giving them

  910. skill and wisdom

  911. and understanding.

  912. God also

  913. is at work

  914. and very powerful

  915. in this specific

  916. challenge

  917. and specific

  918. situation.

  919. We're going to

  920. look again

  921. at this 10-day test

  922. because what

  923. they're asking

  924. is, in a sense,

  925. something reckless.

  926. There is a reason

  927. in verse 10,

  928. the chief of the eunuch

  929. says he believes

  930. they're going to be

  931. in worse condition

  932. if they follow

  933. this diet.

  934. Okay?

  935. There's a reason

  936. Daniel sets the test

  937. for only 12 days

  938. and the reason

  939. is this.

  940. Vegetables

  941. won't make you

  942. strong.

  943. Vegetables

  944. are not going

  945. to make you fat,

  946. as controversial

  947. as it may sound.

  948. Now, there are

  949. many Christians

  950. who take this passage

  951. and they say,

  952. oh, we can see

  953. from this passage

  954. this is dictating

  955. our diet to us.

  956. If we can just

  957. eat vegetables

  958. like Daniel,

  959. we will be honoring

  960. God.

  961. Now, that does

  962. a couple things.

  963. First of all,

  964. it ignores Daniel

    Daniel 10:2

  965. chapter 10,

  966. verse 2,

  967. where we find out

  968. later in Daniel's life,

  969. he did have a diet

  970. of meat and wine.

  971. It also does

  972. something else.

  973. It forgets

  974. some of the historical

  975. background of this passage.

  976. There are scholars

  977. who've looked at art

  978. from Mesopotamia

  979. and they see men

  980. depicted in two ways.

  981. It's from this book here,

  982. How to Read Daniel.

  983. And he tells us

  984. about the two different ways

  985. that men are depicted

  986. in art.

  987. One of them,

  988. the warrior class,

  989. are bristling with muscles.

  990. That's what he tells us.

  991. On the other hand,

  992. wise men,

  993. like Daniel and his colleagues,

  994. are pictured as bald,

  995. big-eyed,

  996. a symbol of intelligence,

  997. so they have these huge eyes,

  998. and chubby.

  999. That is the look

  1000. that Nebuchadnezzar

  1001. was going for.

  1002. In other words,

  1003. Daniel and his friends,

  1004. after eating vegetables

  1005. for 10 days

  1006. and water,

  1007. are fat.

  1008. God has performed

  1009. a miracle.

1010. He has made people fat

  1011. from eating only vegetables

  1012. and drinking only water.

  1013. God is at work

  1014. in this situation

  1015. doing the impossible.

  1016. He is showing

  1017. his power

  1018. and protection

  1019. and control

1020. even in the small element

  1021. of Daniel's diet.

  1022. And so,

  1023. all throughout this passage,

  1024. explicitly

  1025. in what we're told

  1026. God gives,

  1027. implicitly

  1028. in the miracle

  1029. we see him perform,

  1030. God is at work

  1031. protecting,

  1032. providing for his people,

  1033. even in the midst

  1034. of a challenging

  1035. and hostile world.

  1036. And so,

  1037. first and foremost,

  1038. what we want

  1039. to underscore

  1040. is God's work

  1041. on behalf

  1042. of his people

  1043. in Daniel chapter 1.

    Daniel 1 chapter mention

  1044. Remember I told you

  1045. at the beginning

  1046. we're going to be

  1047. reminded and instructed.

  1048. And first of all,

  1049. we're reminded

  1050. that God rules

  1051. and reigns.

  1052. Second then,

  1053. after we understand

  1054. that,

  1055. we can move on

  1056. to the instruction.

  1057. How we live

  1058. as foreigners,

  1059. how we live

  1060. faithfully

  1061. in a foreign land.

  1062. And so,

1063. that's where we turn now.

  1064. Of course,

  1065. God preserves

  1066. his people here.

  1067. In this passage,

  1068. God is preserving you.

  1069. And with that knowledge,

  1070. then we ask,

  1071. how do we dare

  1072. to be a Daniel?

  1073. Remember I mentioned

  1074. near the end

  1075. of our series

  1076. in 2 Peter

  1077. we were going

  1078. to talk about this,

  1079. whether we can

  1080. follow Daniel

  1081. as an example.

  1082. This is also

  1083. a controversial subject

  1084. and I'm going

  1085. to tell you,

  1086. yes,

  1087. we follow Daniel

  1088. as an example

  1089. but we don't

  1090. just follow him.

  1091. We follow him

  1092. as he has

  1093. trust and faith

  1094. in God.

  1095. It's his faith

  1096. and his trust

  1097. that we're following

  1098. him in.

  1099. And so,

  1100. the highlight,

  1101. the emphasis,

  1102. the accent mark

  1103. is still on God

1104. and what he is doing.

  1105. And so,

  1106. how do we live

  1107. faithfully like Daniel

  1108. trusting in God

  1109. and his care?

  1110. We've already talked

1111. about one of our principles,

  1112. the principle

  1113. of civil disobedience.

  1114. I'll remind you again,

  1115. Acts 5 29

  1116. says this,

  1117. we must obey God

  1118. rather than men.

  1119. Just like Daniel,

  1120. we choose to obey

  1121. God rather than men.

  1122. So,

  1123. remember our question,

  1124. when do we disobey

  1125. the government?

  1126. When the government

1127. tells us to do something

  1128. that God tells us

  1129. not to do.

  1130. When the government

1131. tells us not to do

  1132. something that God

  1133. tells us to do.

  1134. And it's only

  1135. those two situations.

  1136. So,

1137. we need to be careful.

  1138. If you're going to

  1139. claim civil disobedience,

1140. you need to back it up

  1141. from the Bible.

  1142. There's plenty of people

  1143. who run around

  1144. claiming that they're

  1145. exercising civil disobedience

  1146. as Christians

  1147. and what they're doing

  1148. they can't support

  1149. from Scripture.

  1150. So,

  1151. there's a narrow list

  1152. of things.

  1153. There's a limited list

1154. of things that we look to

  1155. when we're honoring God

  1156. rather than men.

  1157. Second,

  1158. we're going to draw

  1159. some principles

  1160. from this passage.

  1161. Daniel gives us

  1162. some practical strategies

  1163. here

1164. for how to be wise.

  1165. I mentioned earlier

  1166. that he's very subtle.

  1167. He doesn't stamp

1168. a flag in the ground.

  1169. Instead,

1170. he works behind the scenes.

  1171. And in fact,

  1172. he shows us

  1173. the power here

1174. of what we might call

  1175. the lesser magistrate

  1176. or local government.

  1177. Daniel,

  1178. in other words,

  1179. doesn't go to Nebuchadnezzar.

  1180. He goes to someone

  1181. lower down

  1182. the chain of command

  1183. and he handles it

  1184. at that level.

  1185. Now,

  1186. we know this,

  1187. especially after this

  1188. last year during COVID.

1189. A lot of what mattered

1190. when it came to restrictions,

  1191. now I'm not saying

  1192. those things

1193. were a religious liberty issue.

  1194. I'm just giving you

  1195. an example

  1196. of how government operates

  1197. at different levels.

  1198. So,

  1199. don't hear what I'm not saying.

  1200. What we saw

  1201. was that local government

  1202. mattered a lot.

  1203. No matter what governors

  1204. might be saying,

  1205. no matter what presidents

  1206. might be saying,

  1207. what really mattered

  1208. was what,

  1209. I should say,

  1210. mayors were saying,

  1211. what governors of towns

  1212. were saying.

  1213. That's what really mattered.

  1214. What local police departments

  1215. were saying,

  1216. that's what really mattered.

  1217. And Daniel recognizes

  1218. that principle.

  1219. He picks,

1220. now he goes high first,

  1221. but he goes down

  1222. to the lowest level

  1223. to negotiate.

1224. The same is true for us.

  1225. There's times when we're

1226. going to need to take a stand.

  1227. Sometimes wisdom means

  1228. taking the stand

1229. at the lowest level possible

1230. with the lowest person possible.

1231. We don't always have to have

  1232. a big public display

  1233. of our stand.

1234. Daniel makes that clear for us.

  1235. And so we're wise.

  1236. We're wise about understanding

  1237. who has power,

  1238. who has real authority

  1239. in a practical situation.

  1240. Daniel handles this

  1241. with a steward.

1242. No one else really knows about it.

1243. As far as we know,

  1244. Daniel,

  1245. the steward,

1246. and his friends know about it.

  1247. No one else.

  1248. It never reaches up

  1249. the chain of command.

  1250. Daniel handles it

  1251. at a low level.

  1252. And so that's just

  1253. a wise principle

1254. for us to think about

1255. as we go into situations

1256. where we might be called

  1257. to disobey the authorities

  1258. above us.

1259. How can we be wise?

1260. How can we keep it small

1261. rather than making it big?

  1262. At one point,

  1263. by the way,

  1264. I'll mention,

  1265. during COVID,

  1266. when we had restrictions,

  1267. there was one point

  1268. when El Paso County

  1269. actually gave preferential

  1270. treatment to churches.

1271. Most places across the nation

  1272. bundled churches

  1273. with movie theaters

  1274. and sporting events.

1275. They kind of consider them

1276. all in the same category.

  1277. El Paso County

  1278. actually considered churches

1279. to be in a separate county,

  1280. in a separate category,

  1281. and they gave us

  1282. looser restrictions

1283. than some of those other venues.

1284. You might ask the question,

  1285. why?

  1286. There's probably a variety

  1287. of reasons.

  1288. I can't 100% prove it,

1289. but I believe part of the reason

  1290. churches got preferential treatment

  1291. in El Paso County

1292. is because for years now,

  1293. our local churches

  1294. have been working

  1295. to establish good relationships

  1296. with our local government.

1297. Don't take that for granted.

1298. That is a wise move.

  1299. That's a Daniel-like move

1300. to have a strong relationship

  1301. with the lesser magistrate.

1302. Low on the chain of command

  1303. where the decisions

  1304. are actually made.

  1305. Nebuchadnezzar's given his command

  1306. that these people have

  1307. the king's meat,

  1308. the king's wine,

1309. but it's actually the steward

  1310. who controls what happens

  1311. on the ground.

1312. Okay, so we keep that principle

1313. in mind when we think

  1314. about civil disobedience.

1315. I also want to give you

  1316. another principle,

  1317. which is this.

1318. Negotiation is a legitimate technique.

  1319. I reminded you before,

1320. Daniel has a wide repertoire

  1321. that he uses

  1322. when he approaches

  1323. these situations.

1324. In fact, if you want to

  1325. dig into this more,

  1326. there's a wonderful book

  1327. called Free to Believe,

  1328. and I believe it's chapter 12.

1329. It gives a wonderful overview

1330. of all the different strategies

  1331. God's people have used

  1332. throughout the Bible

  1333. when it comes to

  1334. civil disobedience.

  1335. Negotiation is one

  1336. of those strategies,

  1337. and that's the label

1338. he gives to what Daniel

1339. does here in this passage.

  1340. So you notice

  1341. what Daniel doesn't do.

1342. He doesn't go to the eunuch

  1343. and say,

  1344. you know what?

  1345. I worship Yahweh,

1346. and God is not dead,

1347. so I want to let you know

1348. that I'm here to take a stand.

  1349. Daniel doesn't say

  1350. anything like that.

  1351. He just tells him,

  1352. you know,

  1353. well, he does say

1354. allow him not to defile himself,

1355. but he has some wisdom

  1356. about it, right?

  1357. He's not making a big stink.

1358. He doesn't go to Nebuchadnezzar.

  1359. He's not posting

  1360. on social media

  1361. about what it is

  1362. that he's doing,

  1363. letting everyone know

  1364. where he stands.

  1365. He's going one-on-one

  1366. in a back room

  1367. behind closed doors,

  1368. and he's negotiating.

1369. He does the same thing

  1370. with the steward.

  1371. Test your servant

  1372. for 10 days,

  1373. verse 12.

  1374. And he actually appeals

  1375. in some ways

  1376. to this man's self-interest,

  1377. right?

  1378. Why is it

1379. that this man is so pleased?

  1380. Well,

  1381. it turns out

  1382. that they look better

  1383. than everyone else.

  1384. So the steward actually

  1385. ends up looking

  1386. really good.

  1387. Again,

  1388. we have our principle

1389. of being wise as a serpent,

  1390. innocent as a dove.

1391. We need to think of having

  1392. a variety of repertoire,

  1393. a repertoire

1394. of a variety of approaches

  1395. when we're pursuing

  1396. civil disobedience.

  1397. So someone who's

  1398. innocent as a dove,

  1399. they don't violate

  1400. God's law.

  1401. Someone who's wise

  1402. as a serpent,

  1403. they figure out

  1404. the right approach

  1405. for the right situation.

  1406. They have a variety

  1407. of tools.

  1408. Remember that old cliche,

  1409. if all you have

  1410. is a hammer,

  1411. everything's a nail.

  1412. The wise person

1413. has more than just a hammer.

1414. They know how to navigate

  1415. a variety of situations.

  1416. Okay?

  1417. I had a mentor

1418. who told me one time,

  1419. we pick our battles,

  1420. we also pick

  1421. our battlefields.

  1422. Daniel here,

  1423. he's picked his battle

  1424. and he chooses

  1425. his battlefield.

  1426. He decides his battlefield

  1427. is going to be

  1428. a backroom negotiation.

  1429. So he makes

1430. sort of a backroom deal here.

1431. The same may be true

1432. for us, by the way.

  1433. If we end up

  1434. in a situation

  1435. where there are things

  1436. our government mandates

  1437. that we cannot do

  1438. without violating

  1439. our conscience,

  1440. maybe you're a doctor,

  1441. right,

  1442. and you're told

  1443. you have to do

  1444. certain things.

  1445. Well,

  1446. maybe you're able

  1447. to negotiate

  1448. a backroom deal.

  1449. Maybe you're able

  1450. to figure out

  1451. in your practice

  1452. or your hospital,

  1453. there's an understanding

  1454. among everyone

  1455. that you don't do

  1456. certain things

  1457. and no one forces

  1458. the point

  1459. because you're

  1460. such a good doctor.

  1461. They don't want

  1462. to lose you.

  1463. Maybe you're

  1464. in the military

  1465. and there comes down

  1466. a mandate

  1467. that you need

  1468. to do something

  1469. that violates

  1470. your conscience.

  1471. Maybe you negotiate

  1472. a deal

  1473. with the next person

  1474. up in the chain

  1475. of command

  1476. and maybe no one

  1477. else knows about it.

  1478. Be like Daniel.

  1479. Be wise

  1480. in picking your battles

  1481. and your battlefields.

1482. I'm going to give you

  1483. one more application

1484. here in terms of tactics

  1485. for being wise

  1486. in our civil disobedience

  1487. and it's this.

  1488. We see this principle

  1489. in verse 9.

  1490. Remember,

  1491. God's giving certain things.

  1492. He gives Daniel favor.

  1493. Now,

1494. I'm not going to go

  1495. deep into this

  1496. but there's various echoes

  1497. in Daniel chapter 1

    Daniel 1 chapter mention

  1498. of the Joseph story

  1499. from the end

1500. of the book of Genesis.

  1501. Joseph is also given

  1502. the same word favor

  1503. by God

  1504. which helps him

  1505. in his situation.

  1506. And so,

  1507. part of the reason

  1508. that Daniel's successful

  1509. is that God

  1510. supernaturally intervenes,

  1511. works in the hearts

1512. of the secular pagan people

  1513. around him

  1514. that they view him

  1515. in a good light.

  1516. Now,

  1517. there's some ways

  1518. that Daniel's done this

  1519. just by his skill

  1520. and his excellence.

  1521. I'm going to suggest

  1522. one thing for us

1523. is that we can also

  1524. pray about this.

  1525. It is good

  1526. and right

  1527. and legitimate

  1528. to pray

  1529. that God

  1530. would give us favor

  1531. in our workplaces.

  1532. And so,

  1533. this is something

  1534. that you can do

  1535. as an individual.

  1536. It's something

  1537. you can do

  1538. as a family.

  1539. Maybe when you gather

  1540. as a family

  1541. and you pray

  1542. at a meal,

  1543. one of the things

  1544. that you can pray

  1545. is that God

  1546. would give mom

  1547. or dad favor

  1548. at their job.

  1549. That God

  1550. would give them favor

  1551. in the eyes

  1552. of their boss.

1553. God would give them favor

  1554. in the eyes

  1555. of the company

  1556. they work for.

1557. God would give them favor

  1558. in the eyes

  1559. of the people

  1560. who work for them.

  1561. And when that time

  1562. comes,

1563. when you have to say no,

  1564. that favor

  1565. will be what makes

  1566. the difference.

  1567. And so,

  1568. we're people who understand

1569. not just that we are

  1570. doing certain things

  1571. but we're trusting

  1572. and relying on God.

  1573. One of the ways

  1574. that we trust

  1575. and rely on God

  1576. as we'll see later

  1577. in this book

  1578. is in prayer.

  1579. Daniel,

  1580. we'll see,

1581. has a diligent prayer life.

1582. And one of the ways

  1583. we can pray specifically

1584. is that as we walk

  1585. in this world

1586. God would give us favor

  1587. in the eyes

  1588. of those around us.

  1589. Even those

  1590. who disagree

  1591. with our religious beliefs

  1592. and commitments.

  1593. Because as we see

  1594. for Daniel

  1595. that is actually

  1596. what makes here

  1597. the difference

  1598. for him

  1599. between life

  1600. and death.

  1601. Finally,

  1602. when we talk about

  1603. the Acts 5 29 principle

  1604. that we obey God

  1605. rather than men

  1606. we're reminded

  1607. that we do it

  1608. because of our

  1609. trust in God.

  1610. We obey God

  1611. because we trust

  1612. in God.

  1613. We see that dynamic

  1614. in this passage.

  1615. Daniel's learned

  1616. about the God

  1617. of Israel

  1618. and Daniel

  1619. exercises that knowledge

  1620. and we see

  1621. the God of Israel

  1622. delivering.

  1623. He shows up.

  1624. He's the one

  1625. giving favor.

  1626. He's the one

  1627. giving learning

  1628. and skill.

  1629. He's the one

  1630. performing a miracle

  1631. so that Daniel

  1632. can get fat

  1633. on vegetables.

  1634. The same,

  1635. brothers and sisters,

  1636. is true for us

  1637. and even more.

  1638. We also

  1639. see God's provision

  1640. and his intervention

  1641. in our lives.

  1642. We see it

  1643. even more

  1644. in Jesus.

  1645. We are told

  1646. in the New Testament

  1647. that it's not just

  1648. that God rules

  1649. and reigns

  1650. over the nations

  1651. but Jesus,

  1652. because of his

  1653. victory by his

  1654. resurrection,

  1655. also rules

  1656. and reigns

  1657. over the nations.

  1658. We're told this

  1659. in Ephesians chapter 1

    Ephesians 1 chapter mention

  1660. that God,

  1661. by the working

  1662. of his great might,

  1663. this is Ephesians 1 19,

  1664. that he worked

  1665. in Christ

  1666. when he raised

  1667. him from the dead

  1668. and seated him

  1669. at his right hand

  1670. in the heavenly places,

  1671. far above

  1672. all rule

  1673. and authority

  1674. and power

  1675. and dominion

  1676. and above

  1677. every name

  1678. that is named,

1679. not only in this age

1680. but also in the age

  1681. to come,

  1682. and he put

  1683. all things

  1684. under his feet.

  1685. In other words,

  1686. Jesus

  1687. has all authority

  1688. and control

  1689. in heaven

  1690. and on earth.

  1691. He sits

  1692. over the nations

  1693. just like we see

  1694. God,

  1695. even as he

  1696. hands his people

  1697. into exile,

  1698. having all authority

  1699. and control

  1700. over the nations.

  1701. We're also told

  1702. in Colossians chapter 2,

    Colossians 2 chapter mention

  1703. God,

  1704. Jesus disarmed

  1705. the rulers

  1706. and authorities

  1707. and put them

  1708. to open shame

  1709. by triumphing

  1710. over them in him.

  1711. That's God then

  1712. disarming the rulers

  1713. and authorities.

  1714. And then Jesus

  1715. also shows us

  1716. God's presence

  1717. and his care.

  1718. John chapter 16,

    John 16 chapter mention

1719. I have said these things

  1720. to you,

  1721. that in me

  1722. you may have peace,

  1723. in the world

  1724. you will have tribulation,

  1725. but take heart,

  1726. I have overcome

  1727. the world.

  1728. If you've been

  1729. with us some time,

  1730. you know that I

  1731. emphasize bookends

  1732. and we have bookends

  1733. in this passage.

  1734. We're told

  1735. a date

  1736. on the first verse

  1737. and a date

  1738. in the last verse.

  1739. In the first verse,

  1740. we see this is

  1741. the third year

1742. of the reign of Jehoiakim.

  1743. And we see

  1744. in the last verse,

  1745. Daniel was there

  1746. until the first year

  1747. of King Cyrus.

  1748. That is,

1749. he was all the way

  1750. there until 539.

  1751. In other words,

  1752. God preserves Daniel

  1753. from beginning to end.

  1754. He sees him

  1755. all the way through.

  1756. He outlasts

  1757. Nebuchadnezzar.

  1758. He is able

1759. to make it all the way.

  1760. Daniel serves God

  1761. faithfully.

  1762. God protects

  1763. and preserves Daniel.

1764. So it is for us.

  1765. We serve God

  1766. faithfully.

  1767. God preserves

  1768. and protects us

  1769. no matter the culture

1770. that we find ourselves in,

  1771. no matter the challenges

  1772. that present themselves.

  1773. in the very end

1774. of the Gospel of Matthew,

  1775. Jesus' last words,

  1776. the last words

  1777. of the last verse

  1778. of the last chapter,

  1779. he says this,

  1780. and behold,

1781. I am with you always

1782. to the end of the age.

  1783. Brothers and sisters,

1784. because God is with us,

  1785. because he controls

  1786. everything,

  1787. we can serve

  1788. and follow him faithfully

  1789. no matter the circumstances.

  1790. because he tells us,

  1791. behold,

  1792. I am with you

  1793. even to the end

  1794. of the age.

  1795. I invite you

  1796. to pray with me.

  1797. Our Father in Heaven,

  1798. we thank you

  1799. for this encouragement

  1800. from your word.

1801. We ask that you would

1802. give us both the strength

  1803. to stand strong

  1804. and be faithful

  1805. no matter the circumstances

  1806. that face us,

1807. and you'd also give us

  1808. this trust

  1809. and confidence

  1810. in you.

  1811. You'd remind us

  1812. that you're at work

1813. and you are the one

  1814. who reigns

1815. and rules over the nations.

1816. We ask you these things

  1817. in Jesus' name.

  1818. Amen.

1819. Thanks to all of you

  1820. for joining me

  1821. this morning.

1822. I hope to see you all

  1823. very soon,

  1824. and as we end

  1825. our time together,

  1826. we will continue

  1827. our tradition

  1828. of ending our time

  1829. with a benediction.

1830. And so I invite you,

  1831. even as we're separated,

1832. to hold up your hand.

1833. I will hold up my hand

1834. to send out God's blessing

  1835. on you,

1836. and you hold out your hands

  1837. to receive God's blessing.

  1838. And so hear now

  1839. God's good word

  1840. from 1 Thessalonians 5.

1841. Now may the God of peace

  1842. himself sanctify you

  1843. completely,

1844. and may your whole spirit

  1845. and soul and body

  1846. be kept blameless

  1847. at the coming

1848. of our Lord Jesus Christ.

  1849. He who calls you

  1850. is faithful.

1851. He will surely do it.

  1852. Amen.

  1853. Thanks for joining us,

1854. and I hope to see

1855. all of you very soon.

  1856. Bye-bye.

  1857. Bye-bye.

  1858. Bye-bye.

  1859. Bye-bye.

  1860. Bye-bye.

  1861. Bye-bye.

  1862. Bye-bye.

  1863. Bye-bye.

  1864. Bye-bye.

  1865. Bye-bye.

  1866. Bye-bye.

  1867. Bye-bye.

  1868. Bye-bye.

  1869. Bye-bye.

  1870. Bye-bye.

  1871. Bye-bye.

  1872. Bye-bye.

  1873. Bye-bye.

  1874. Bye-bye.

  1875. Bye-bye.

  1876. Bye-bye.
