  1. This image mighty and of exceeding brightness stood before you, and its appearance was frightening.

  2. The head of the image was fine gold, its chest and arms silver, its middle and thighs of bronze,

  3. its legs of iron, its feet partly of iron and partly of clay.

  4. As you looked, a stone was cut out by no human hand,

  5. and it struck the image on its feet of iron and clay and broke them in pieces.

  6. Then the iron, the clay, the bronze, the silver and the gold all together were broken in pieces

  7. and became like the chaff of the summer threshing floors,

  8. and the wind carried them away so that not a trace of them could be found.

  9. But the stone that struck the image became a great mountain and filled the whole earth.

  10. This was the dream.

  11. Now we will tell the king its interpretation.

  12. You, O king, the king of kings, to whom the God of heaven has given the kingdom, the power, and the might, and the glory,

  13. and into whose hand he has given, wherever they dwell, the children of man, the beasts of the fields,

  14. and the birds of the heavens, making you ruler over them all.

  15. You are the head of gold.

  16. Another kingdom inferior to you shall arise after you,

  17. and yet a third kingdom, a bronze, which shall rule over the earth,

  18. and there shall be a fourth kingdom, strong as iron,

  19. because iron breaks to pieces and shatters all things.

  20. And like iron that crushes, it shall break and crush all things.

  21. And as you saw the feet and toes, partly of potter's clay and partly of iron,

  22. it shall be a divided kingdom.

  23. But some of the firmness of iron shall be in it,

  24. just as you saw iron mixed with the soft clay.

  25. And as the toes of the feet were partly iron and partly clay,

  26. so the kingdom shall be partly strong and partly brittle.

  27. And as you saw the iron mixed with soft clay,

  28. so they will mix with one another in marriage,

  29. but they shall not hold together,

  30. just as the iron does not mix with clay.

  31. And in the days of those kings,

  32. the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that shall never be destroyed,

  33. nor shall the kingdom be left to another people.

  34. It shall break in pieces all these kingdoms

  35. and bring them to an end,

  36. and it shall stand forever.

  37. Just as you saw that a stone was cut from a mountain

  38. by no human hands,

  39. that it broke in pieces iron,

  40. the bronze and the clay,

  41. and the silver and the gold,

  42. a great God has made known to the king

  43. what shall be after this.

  44. The dream is certain,

  45. and its interpretation sure.

  46. Let's pray.

  47. Father, we thank you for your word,

  48. which instructs us,

  49. which enlightens us,

  50. which tells us what is true.

  51. So, Lord, even as we've read your word this morning,

  52. we pray, O Holy Spirit,

  53. that you will open our hearts to receive it.

  54. Your word is clear,

  55. but oftentimes we have difficulty

  56. because our minds are clouded by so many things.

  57. So, Lord, open our heart,

  58. open our ears,

  59. open our minds to receive truth from you.

  60. Help me, as I explain this passage,

  61. to explain it truly,

  62. to explain it according to what you are saying,

  63. and may I do so in a way that is clear

  64. and helpful for all of us.

  65. We pray this all in Jesus' name.

  66. Amen.

  67. When I was a freshman in college,

  68. I was at Georgia Tech,

  69. and the school would host a variety

  70. of engineering contests,

  71. and the biggest contest of the year,

  72. every year, was the Great Race.

  73. And it was a time when the engineers

  74. would build these coasters

  75. that they would design to go down the hill

  76. at the center of the campus,

  77. and whoever could design the fastest coaster

  78. would win.

  79. And so, you know,

  80. I didn't have time for such frivolous activities

  81. because I was engaged in other frivolous activities.

  82. But I had friends who were doing this,

  83. and they were building this coaster,

  84. and they were using all their engineering,

  85. things that they learned,

  86. working out the design

  87. so that it would be the most aerodynamic,

  88. figuring out the right circumference of the wheels,

  89. even the right width of the tires,

  90. so that it could go the fastest.

  91. Well, once they got it all completed,

  92. another friend and I thought,

  93. hey, it'd be fun to take it for a test drive.

  94. So late one night, we got the coaster,

  95. and we went to the center of the Tech campus,

  96. and we started going down the hill,

  97. and it was fast.

  98. It was a very fast coaster.

  99. The problem was that on the day of the race,

  100. all the roads would be closed.

  101. This was not the day of the race.

  102. And we were headed towards this major intersection,

  103. that was run through campus,

  104. and it was dark.

  105. It was late at night,

  106. and there was no way that the cars

  107. were going to be able to see us,

  108. and we realized we're out of control.

  109. Well, my friend is the driver.

  110. I'm the brake man.

  111. He's yelling at me,

  112. slow us down, slow us down.

  113. And I panicked.

  114. I pulled back the brake lever so hard,

  115. it broke off.

  116. And we're not slowing down,

  117. and my friend doesn't know what's going on.

  118. He's going, slow down, slow down.

  119. And I'm looking.

  120. I go, what do I do?

  121. And so he realizes something's wrong,

  122. so he decides to turn sharply

  123. to get it to slow down.

  124. The coaster was straight.

  125. It was not made to go fast turning.

  126. And when he did that,

  127. it just began to roll over and over.

  128. And I'm on one side of the street,

  129. bloodied and battered up,

  130. and he's on the other side of the street,

  131. all bloodied and battered up.

  132. And between us are parts.

  133. You know, wheel here, wheel there, seat there.

  134. It is a total...

  135. We're going to do everything that we can,

  136. and we carry it back to the house,

  137. arguing about what we've got to do

  138. over this crash.

  139. And we walk into the house

  140. where these men had given up nights

  141. and we're going to do everything.

  142. They're not worried that I'm bloodied and battered.

  143. They don't care.

  144. All they see is all of their work

  145. they have wasted.

  146. I mean, they've given up sleep.

  147. They've given up weekends.

  148. They've given up all this,

  149. and now it is all ruined in just a moment.

  150. And there's a terrible feeling for them

  151. and terrible...

  152. It came to nothing.

  153. And that's depressing, isn't it?

  154. Isn't it depressing when you work really hard

  155. on something and you...

  156. But how do you know that's not the story of your life?

  157. We see here in Daniel chapter 2

    Daniel 2 chapter mention

  158. that King Nebuchadnezzar,

  159. who was a glorious king in many ways,

  160. had a success in this life

  161. than any of us could ever hope

  162. to possibly attain.

  163. And he has this nightmare,

  164. reoccurring dream that is so disturbing

  165. he cannot sleep anymore.

  166. And he begins to realize intuitively

  167. something is wrong here.

  168. Everything is coming to naught.

  169. And so this dream that it's all that would be wiped out,

  170. yet as depressing as that sounds,

  171. the same dream that Nebuchadnezzar has

  172. about everything being lost

  173. also gives us...

  174. What is our hope?

  175. What is our comfort?

  176. We read about it moments ago.

  177. What is our hope?

  178. What is our comfort?

  179. How can we have hope in a world

  180. that it seems like everything is being blown away?

  181. Well, so to understand how we can have a life

  182. of meaning and purpose

  183. that will last forever,

  184. we need to understand three things from this text.

  185. The first thing that we need to understand

  186. is, number one, that God is in control.

  187. God is in control.

  188. And we see this in this passage.

  189. Now, Nebuchadnezzar, again,

  190. one of the great, greatest empires of all time,

  191. the Babylonian,

  192. he had conquered Judah, Phoenicia,

  193. and what is today Syria.

  194. After conquering all these lands,

  195. he was going to build a peaceful kingdom.

  196. He was a very skilled and gifted ruler

  197. and administrator.

  198. And so he was able to bring peace to that region.

  199. And then he wanted to make something beautiful.

  200. So he began these massive things that were glorious.

  201. One of the things that he built,

  202. I've heard of,

  203. it was one of the seven of the world,

  204. the hanging gardens of Babylon.

  205. So here's a man who's built these beautiful kingdoms,

  206. laboring to establish this glory

  207. so that his name would live forever.

  208. He has this disturbing dream that he cannot sleep.

  209. So he calls together his wise men,

  210. the enchanters,

  211. the stargazers,

  212. the sauvres,

  213. promises them that he will make them

  214. imaginations.

  215. Well, King, tell us the dream.

  216. And he says, not so fast.

  217. I want you to tell me both the dream

  218. and the interpretation.

  219. They said, no, tell us the dream

  220. and then we can tell you what it means.

  221. He goes, no,

  222. I think you're playing games with me here.

  223. If you really know,

  224. if you really know what the gods are saying,

  225. you can tell me both the dream

  226. and its interpretation.

  227. And they say, we can't do that.

  228. No one can do that.

  229. Only the gods know.

  230. They don't dwell with flesh.

  231. So Nebuchadnezzar realizes

  232. they're all just a bunch of charlatans.

  233. They act like they know what the gods are saying.

  234. They act like they're able to read the stars

  235. and talk to the dead,

  236. but it's all an act.

  237. They don't really know anything.

  238. Only the gods know,

  239. and they don't know what the gods know,

  240. and so they've been exposed as frauds.

  241. They claim to know the future,

  242. but God is the only one

  243. who knows where the future is headed.

  244. Today, people will speak about

  245. some behaviors being on the right side of history,

  246. some behaviors on the wrong side of history,

  247. and it assumes a particular version of the future.

  248. And it also assumes

  249. that they have the vantage point of the future

  250. and can look back at us

  251. and see how history is going to judge

  252. this particular moment.

  253. They understand.

  254. In other words,

  255. they're claiming to know where history is going.

  256. And here's the question

  257. that Nebuchadnezzar would ask them

  258. that we ought to ask them is,

  259. how do you know?

  260. How do you know how the future

  261. is going to judge the past?

  262. How do you know if history is going anywhere?

  263. Now, how do you know?

  264. You're speaking with certainty

  265. about what the future is going to say

  266. about the present,

  267. about the direction of history,

  268. but how do you know?

  269. As Nebuchadnezzar forces his counselors to admit,

  270. God only knows what's going to happen.

  271. He is the only one who can say

  272. what will and will not happen.

  273. Now, for the counselors,

  274. this is a point of despair

  275. because they're saying,

  276. well, God only knows.

  277. We don't know.

  278. And so there's no hope.

  279. How can we understand?

  280. For God's people,

  281. this is encouraging news.

  282. This is good news for us.

  283. While we don't know the future,

  284. God knows the future.

  285. He alone knows what stands

  286. on the right side of history.

  287. And God knows.

  288. And so we see that

  289. as God knows the future,

  290. not because God is sitting here

  291. looking down the corridors of time

  292. and can see what is happening.

  293. God knows the future

  294. because God is the author of the future.

  295. God determines the future.

  296. He is in control of the future.

  297. Now, there's one thing

  298. that we have learned in this past year,

  299. and hopefully there are many.

  300. But one thing we've learned

  301. is we are not in control.

  302. You are not in control.

  303. I mean, how many of us

  304. had plans last year

  305. totally blown out of the water

  306. by the pandemic?

  307. We are not in control.

  308. And not only are we not in control,

  309. we really don't know

  310. what tomorrow holds.

  311. We don't know.

  312. We did not see the pandemic coming.

  313. We don't know

  314. when the next pandemic is going to come.

  315. You don't know

  316. if the stock market is going to go up

  317. or if it's going to come crashing down.

  318. You don't know

  319. what the driver in the next lane

  320. is going to do.

  321. You are not in control of that, right?

  322. And yet all of these things

  323. will affect your life

  324. in dramatic ways.

  325. And you're in control

  326. of none of that.

  327. Now, while that's terrifying,

  328. particularly for me,

  329. I'm a person who likes to be in control.

  330. I want to be in control

  331. of these things.

  332. And it's terrifying to think

  333. I have absolutely no control.

  334. If your person

  335. who thinks you're in control

  336. have children,

  337. it will just blow

  338. your whole image

  339. of control the right way.

  340. We're not in control.

  341. Yet, just because

  342. we are not in control,

  343. what will happen is

  344. we'll move to despair

  345. and say then

  346. everything is out of control.

  347. Because I don't know the future,

  348. that means no one knows the future.

  349. That's not true.

  350. Nebuchadnezzar's own counselors say,

  351. they say the gods,

  352. but we know there's just one.

  353. God knows the future.

  354. God is in control of the future.

  355. And the God

  356. who is in control of the future

  357. is the same God

  358. who rules over all things

  359. and who deeply loves

  360. and cares for his people.

  361. God is in control.

  362. And for those who trust in Jesus,

  363. this gives us hope

  364. because the God

  365. who controls all things

  366. loves us so much

  367. that he gave his son

  368. to die for us.

  369. Here's why we have

  370. such great courage.

  371. The idea that God is in control

  372. by itself

  373. is not comforting.

  374. But if I believe

  375. that God is my father,

  376. it changes everything.

  377. I remember, you know,

  378. years ago,

  379. I was driving down the road

  380. one evening.

  381. We lived in Florida

  382. at the time.

  383. And in Florida,

  384. we get rain.

  385. Colorado, we get a sprinkle.

  386. We get rain.

  387. And it was one night,

  388. it was coming down in buckets.

  389. There's enough rain

  390. to fill Prospect Lake

  391. in a few minutes.

  392. And it is just pouring down.

  393. And it's dark.

  394. And the wipers

  395. are quite clearing.

  396. And I've got a death grip

  397. on the steering wheel.

  398. And Tricia turns to me

  399. and goes,

  400. you okay?

  401. And of course I lie.

  402. You know.

  403. Yeah.

  404. In control.

  405. You know.

  406. I've got this.

  407. But the white knuckles

  408. of my hand

  409. are a dead giveaway

  410. that I am terrified

  411. at this moment.

  412. And I look into

  413. the rear view mirror

  414. to see our girls

  415. in the back seat.

  416. And I'm thinking,

  417. maybe they're,

  418. they've got to be scared.

  419. They're all asleep.

  420. They are out.

  421. Why?

  422. Because,

  423. because dad

  424. is behind the wheel.

  425. And my children

  426. had this

  427. irrational confidence.

  428. confidence.

  429. That if I was

  430. behind the wheel,

  431. they would be okay.

  432. You know,

  433. your three-year-old

  434. just does not worry

  435. about paying the bills.

  436. They're not worried

  437. about what's going to

  438. happen with the economy.

  439. They're not worried

  440. about home repairs.

  441. They don't worry

  442. about those things.

  443. They have a father

  444. who worries

  445. about those things.

  446. Now,

  447. my children,

  448. if they could have

  449. that sort of confidence

  450. in me,

  451. when I am prone

  452. to error,

  453. when I make mistakes,

  454. when I'm very,

  455. very fallible,

  456. how much more

  457. should we,

  458. as the people of God,

  459. be able to rest

  460. knowing that our

  461. father's hands

  462. are firmly

  463. on the wheel?

  464. He is in control.

  465. You have nothing

  466. to worry about.

  467. Now,

  468. he doesn't always

  469. tell you what he's doing

  470. or why he's doing

  471. what he's doing.

  472. You don't need to know.

  473. He's got this.

  474. He's got this.

  475. He is in control.

  476. And not only

  477. is he in control,

  478. but he is for you,

  479. Christian.

  480. You know he's for you.

  481. We know he's for you

  482. because as our father,

  483. he is the one

  484. who gave Christ for us.

  485. That's why we celebrate

  486. the cross.

  487. The cross,

  488. which was a symbol

  489. of torture and death

  490. in the first century,

  491. is a symbol of love

  492. for us.

  493. And by giving his life

  494. on the cross for us,

  495. Jesus proves

  496. that he's committed

  497. to our good

  498. even to the point

  499. of death.

  500. And we celebrate

  501. the cross,

  502. but we celebrate

  503. an empty cross

  504. because Jesus

  505. has finished the work

  506. for our salvation

  507. and God,

  508. the Father,

  509. has raised him

  510. from the dead,

  511. proving that he has

  512. the power to save us

  513. even from the most

  514. fearful of enemies,

  515. death itself.

  516. Because God

  517. is all-powerful

  518. and he uses his power

  519. to care for his children.

  520. Everything he does,

  521. everything he does

  522. ultimately is for

  523. his glory

  524. and our good

  525. and he is in control

  526. of all things

  527. and we can trust him

  528. in the midst of that.

  529. Well, once the wise men

  530. of Babylon admit

  531. they really don't know

  532. anything,

  533. that they're not so wise

  534. after all,

  535. Nebuchadnezzar is so enraged

  536. because he realizes

  537. they've been playing games

  538. with him all along,

  539. he decides he's just

  540. going to kill them all.

  541. All the wise men

  542. throughout the entire empire,

  543. all the counselors

  544. throughout the entire empire.

  545. Well, Daniel hears about this

  546. and Daniel and his friends

  547. are part of this wise men class.

  548. They're not like the others

  549. but they're part of

  550. that class of people.

  551. So Daniel is slated

  552. to be executed.

  553. So he sends words

  554. to the king

  555. and he says,

  556. come and may I speak with you.

  557. Now Daniel at this point

  558. does not know the dream,

  559. he does not know

  560. the interpretation.

  561. So he asks for an appointment

  562. with the king

  563. and then he goes to his friends

  564. and says,

  565. pray that God will tell me

  566. what to say

  567. because your life

  568. depends on it.

  569. So Daniel goes into the king

  570. and speaks to him

  571. in the passage we just read

  572. and here we see

  573. the second key

  574. to living a life

  575. that is full of meaning

  576. and purpose

  577. and that is recognizing

  578. that the kingdoms

  579. of this world

  580. will all pass away.

  581. The kingdoms of this world

  582. are all going to pass away.

  583. Now in this dream,

  584. Nebuchadnezzar sees

  585. this enormous statue,

  586. head of gold,

  587. it's dazzling in appearance,

  588. pure gold,

  589. its chest and arms

  590. are of silver,

  591. its belly of bronze,

  592. its legs of iron

  593. and feet of iron

  594. mixed with clay

  595. and Daniel explains

  596. that each of those sections

  597. of the statue

  598. represent a different world empire

  599. and he starts off

  600. with some great news.

  601. He says to Nebuchadnezzar,

  602. Nebuchadnezzar,

  603. your empire is amazing.

  604. You are the head of gold,

  605. glorious beyond all glory.

  606. But Nebuchadnezzar,

  607. I've got some bad news.

  608. Your empire is not

  609. going to last forever.

  610. Another empire will come

  611. and it is one of silver.

  612. Now the text does not

  613. directly explain to us

  614. what that empire will be

  615. but it seems to indicate

  616. the next empire to come

  617. was the empire

  618. of the Medes and the Persians

  619. who conquered the Babylonians.

  620. And it was a great empire

  621. but it wasn't as glorious

  622. as Nebuchadnezzar's.

  623. And then the next empire

  624. was one of bronze

  625. and again the text

  626. doesn't tell us

  627. but we know that later on

  628. another empire would come

  629. and it was that of the Greeks.

  630. Alexander the Great

  631. would conquer the world

  632. and then after that

  633. would come another empire,

  634. one of iron.

  635. And this seemed to be a reference

  636. to the Roman Empire,

  637. one that is mighty

  638. and one that is strong

  639. but did not have quite the beauty

  640. of the others.

  641. Now in Nebuchadnezzar's vision,

  642. a rock strikes this statue,

  643. a rock that is not carved out

  644. by human hands

  645. and colorizes it

  646. and the statue becomes like dust

  647. and then the wind comes

  648. and sweeps it away

  649. so that there's nothing left.

  650. There's nothing remains.

  651. And the point of this

  652. is that is what happens

  653. to all the empires

  654. of this world.

  655. All of them.

  656. All of them.

  657. Babylonian,

  658. Medes and the Persians,

  659. Greeks, Romans,

  660. you can take that on,

  661. British Empire,

  662. American Empire,

  663. whatever it may be.

  664. All of the empires

  665. of this world

  666. are passing away

  667. and nothing will be left.

  668. And so the point of this

  669. is that none of these things

  670. will last,

  671. the kingdoms of this world.

  672. And so what's the point?

  673. What kingdom are you living for?

  674. What kingdom are you living for?

  675. All of our lives

  676. we've been told

  677. that fulfillment

  678. is found in success,

  679. achievement,

  680. finding a way

  681. to establish your identity,

  682. find a way

  683. to establish your worth.

  684. You know,

  685. the ancient Greeks

  686. thought that they could

  687. establish their glory

  688. if they were heroic deeds

  689. in battle

  690. or athletic accomplishments

  691. that they could establish

  692. their name forever.

  693. It was a way

  694. to find salvation.

  695. And many of us

  696. are looking to the same thing.

  697. And yet what we see here

  698. in Daniel's vision

  699. is that these things

  700. that we're seeking

  701. our glory

  702. to find our meaning

  703. and finding our purpose

  704. ultimately become

  705. dust in the wind,

  706. become nothing more.

  707. And so all of our lives

  708. were told that,

  709. that defined a sense

  710. of identity

  711. in these things,

  712. but Nebuchadnezzar's vision

  713. shows us

  714. that it's all a lie.

  715. If you are a football fan,

  716. you may have heard

  717. the name Urban Meyer.

  718. Urban Meyer

  719. is only one of three coaches

  720. ever

  721. to win national championships

  722. with two different

  723. college teams.

  724. And Urban Meyer,

  725. when he was coaching

  726. at the University of Florida,

  727. he had a quarterback,

  728. and if you're from Colorado,

  729. you may have heard

  730. of a guy named Tim Tebow.

  731. Tebow was his quarterback,

  732. and they won

  733. a national championship.

  734. The night they won

  735. the national championship,

  736. they're celebrating.

  737. Immediately that very evening

  738. while everyone

  739. is celebrating,

  740. Urban Meyer

  741. begins recruiting players

  742. for the next year.

  743. He says he just couldn't stop.

  744. A friend came up to him

  745. and said,

  746. what are you doing?

  747. Enjoy this.

  748. What's wrong with you?

  749. And Urban Meyer says

  750. at that time,

  751. he goes,

  752. we just won,

  753. but I was in a panic.

  754. Because what happens?

  755. He just won glory,

  756. the top prize

  757. that he could possibly win,

  758. and he knew

  759. it would not last

  760. that he had to do it again

  761. and again and again.

  762. And it was driving him crazy.

  763. He couldn't even enjoy

  764. the moment.

  765. We think if we had fame

  766. and fortune or power

  767. that we could be somebody.

  768. But Nebuchadnezzar

  769. had more fame,

  770. more power,

  771. more glory

  772. than any of us

  773. could ever achieve.

  774. And yet,

  775. realized that it all

  776. was dust in the wind.

  777. Philip Yancey

  778. talks about a carving

  779. in Waterford, Ireland.

  780. And it's a carving

  781. of the mayor,

  782. but you would think

  783. that a carving

  784. of an old mayor

  785. would be one

  786. of a beautiful tribute.

  787. But this carving

  788. was at the time

  789. of the Black Death.

  790. And it shows

  791. the body

  792. of the former mayor's town

  793. decomposing

  794. while rats

  795. and vermin

  796. and insects

  797. are eating it.

  798. Beautiful carving, right?

  799. The inscription says this,

  800. Whoever you are

  801. that passed by,

  802. stand,

  803. read,

  804. weep.

  805. I am what you will be

  806. and I was

  807. what you are.

  808. Dust in the wind.

  809. Dust in the wind.

  810. The kingdoms

  811. of this world

  812. are fleeting

  813. and passing.

  814. And if you put

  815. your hope in them,

  816. you're putting your hope

  817. in something

  818. that will not last.

  819. That's the bad news.

  820. That's the bad news.

  821. But Nebuchadnezzar's vision,

  822. though,

  823. ultimately is not pessimistic,

  824. or at least

  825. it doesn't have to be.

  826. It brings us

  827. to the third key

  828. to living a life

  829. with meaning and purpose,

  830. a life that lasts forever,

  831. and that is this,

  832. that we are to live

  833. for the kingdom

  834. that endures.

  835. Live for the kingdom

  836. that endures.

  837. Now,

  838. after the rock

  839. comes and obliterates

  840. this statue,

  841. the rock,

  842. as it were,

  843. then begins

  844. to grow

  845. and expand,

  846. and it ends up

  847. filling the whole earth,

  848. and Daniel tells us

  849. that this rock

  850. becomes a mountain

  851. that fills the earth,

  852. and it represents

  853. the kingdom of God.

  854. Now,

  855. this image

  856. of a mountain

  857. representing

  858. the kingdom of God

  859. is not unique to Daniel.

  860. We see it

  861. in other prophecies.

  862. We see it

  863. in Isaiah chapter 2

    Isaiah 2 chapter mention

  864. and Micah chapter 4.

    Micah 4 chapter mention

  865. And the idea here

  866. is that it is a mountain

  867. that is a place of worship.

  868. See,

  869. in the ancient world,

  870. they thought of

  871. the sky

  872. as being a place

  873. where earth and heaven

  874. would come into contact.

  875. That's why they build

  876. these high pyramids

  877. and ziggurats

  878. and different things

  879. because they thought

  880. if you could get

  881. to the high spot,

  882. you would be where

  883. the heavens and earth

  884. come in contact,

  885. and so they build

  886. their altars

  887. and they build

  888. even their temples

  889. on high places.

  890. And we see that

  891. throughout the Old Testament.

  892. And so,

  893. the mountain

  894. is a place of worship.

  895. And what this image

  896. is telling us

  897. is that

  898. the mountain

  899. of the Lord

  900. is going to fill the earth.

  901. That the whole earth

  902. is going to worship

  903. the Lord.

  904. That the kingdom of God

  905. is going to fill

  906. the entire world

  907. and that the people

  908. of the entire world

  909. will one day

  910. be coming

  911. and worshiping

  912. the Lord.

  913. And Daniel tells us

  914. not only that

  915. this kingdom of God

  916. is coming

  917. and that it will

  918. endure forever,

  919. it will be the kingdom

  920. that lasts.

  921. He even tells us

  922. when this kingdom

  923. will come.

  924. When's this kingdom

  925. going to come?

  926. When's God going

  927. to bring about

  928. the kingdom?

  929. Well, he tells us

  930. it's going to happen

  931. during that fourth kingdom,

  932. the kingdom of iron,

  933. but with feet of clay

  934. mixed with iron.

  935. So when the Roman Empire

  936. came along,

  937. what it lacked

  938. in beauty and grace

  939. and more than made up

  940. for strength and power,

  941. power unlike the world

  942. had ever seen,

  943. it seems only appropriate

  944. that iron would represent

  945. this kingdom.

  946. But at the height

  947. of the Roman Empire,

  948. at its pinnacle,

  949. something happened

  950. that was so dramatic

  951. that it changed

  952. the history

  953. of the world forever.

  954. And yet,

  955. it went unnoticed

  956. at the moment

  957. because in a little village,

  958. obscure village,

  959. in the outskirts

  960. of the empire,

  961. just outside of Jerusalem,

  962. in this little village

  963. known as Bethlehem,

  964. a baby was born.

  965. Hardly anyone noticed,

  966. no one paid attention.

  967. That baby grew up

  968. at age 33.

  969. He was taken outside

  970. the city gates

  971. there in Jerusalem.

  972. And outside the city gates,

  973. he was executed.

  974. Do you remember

  975. the charges against him?

  976. Do you remember

  977. why he was put to death?

  978. The plaque said

  979. in three different languages,

  980. the king of the Jews.

  981. Jesus Christ had come

  982. to bring the kingdom of heaven.

  983. In fact,

  984. Jesus made this clear.

  985. He announced his kingdom

  986. of heaven

  987. by announcing,

  988. as he proclaimed

  989. the gospel around,

  990. that he is the rock.

  991. And he said this.

  992. He says,

  993. he says,

  994. repent,

  995. for the kingdom of heaven

  996. is near.

  997. The kingdom of heaven

  998. is at hand.

  999. What Jesus is saying

1000. is I am the king

  1001. and I'm the one

  1002. who's come to bring

  1003. the kingdom.

  1004. So we now know

  1005. something that Nebuchadnezzar

  1006. could not know.

  1007. We know

  1008. what the rock is

  1009. or should we say

  1010. who the rock is.

  1011. Jesus is the rock.

  1012. And he's come

  1013. to bring the kingdom.

  1014. He's the rock

  1015. that's not cut

  1016. from the mountain

  1017. by any human hands,

1018. that breaks into his history,

  1019. bringing judgment

  1020. on all that stands

  1021. in his path

  1022. and all who try

  1023. to hinder it.

  1024. The kingdom of God

  1025. is here.

  1026. When Jesus came

  1027. and announced

  1028. the kingdom of God,

1029. then we see the mountain

  1030. growing, right?

  1031. That's the picture

1032. we see in Nebuchadnezzar's vision.

1033. It fills the whole earth.

  1034. And that's what we're

  1035. seeing today.

  1036. What started off

  1037. as a small band

  1038. of worshipers

  1039. in the Middle East

1040. has grown into a mountain

1041. that fills the entire earth.

  1042. Think about this.

1043. Now, in Acts chapter 2,

    Acts 2 chapter mention

  1044. we're told

  1045. there are 120 people

  1046. there gathering

  1047. in Jerusalem.

  1048. This isn't even

  1049. an important place

  1050. in the world

  1051. at the time.

  1052. 120 people.

  1053. Yet today,

  1054. today,

  1055. there are Christians

  1056. on every continent

  1057. and just about

  1058. every country

  1059. around the world.

  1060. Estimates are

  1061. there's nearly

  1062. as many practicing

  1063. Christians in China

  1064. today as there are

  1065. in the United States.

  1066. It's amazing.

  1067. There are more people

  1068. in church today

  1069. in Kenya

  1070. than there are

  1071. in Canada.

  1072. There are more

  1073. Presbyterians

  1074. in church today

  1075. in Ghana

  1076. than there are

  1077. in Scotland,

  1078. which is astounding.

  1079. And not only that,

1080. and I think of a century ago.

  1081. A century ago,

  1082. there were hardly

  1083. any Christians

  1084. in Korea.

  1085. And yet today,

  1086. South Korea

  1087. has over 16,000

  1088. cross-cultural missionaries.

  1089. They are sending out

  1090. missionaries

  1091. to 173 different countries.

  1092. Christian leaders

  1093. in China

1094. are planning to send out

  1095. 20,000 missionaries

  1096. by the year 2030.

  1097. Nebuchadnezzar's vision

  1098. is coming true

  1099. right before our eyes.

  1100. The kingdom of God

  1101. is growing

1102. and is filling the earth.

  1103. Yet there are still

  1104. over 3 billion people

  1105. who live in places

  1106. where there are

  1107. no viable

  1108. Christian witnesses.

  1109. Places where people

  1110. die every day

  1111. without hearing

1112. about the love of God.

  1113. In other places,

  1114. the gospel

  1115. is being preached,

  1116. but the gospel

  1117. that's being preached

  1118. is hardly recognizable

  1119. by scripture.

  1120. It is a gospel

  1121. of works,

  1122. of legalism.

  1123. Other places,

  1124. it's a prosperity gospel,

  1125. which simply leads people

  1126. into greater bondage

  1127. rather than the freedom

  1128. that Jesus Christ

  1129. came to give.

  1130. And as a result,

  1131. people are trading

  1132. one form of bondage

  1133. for another.

  1134. The kingdom of God

  1135. is growing,

  1136. but the work

  1137. is not yet finished.

  1138. And that's why

  1139. at Shine Mountain

1140. you have been so engaged.

  1141. You have people

1142. who are part of your church

  1143. in a country

  1144. that we can't mention.

  1145. We'll just call it

  1146. the kingdom.

  1147. And where they are

  1148. announcing the good news

  1149. of the gospel.

  1150. The Shemkees,

  1151. whom you support,

  1152. are in Africa

  1153. with African Bible University

  1154. training people

1155. to preach the true gospel

  1156. rather than

  1157. an adulterated version

  1158. so that the gospel

  1159. can go forth.

  1160. But we need more.

  1161. You're part of

  1162. the Presbyterian Church

  1163. in America.

1164. And one of the things

  1165. we're praying for

  1166. is a church

1167. that 1% of our members

1168. over the next 10 years

  1169. will commit to serving

  1170. in cross-cultural missions.

1171. A mission to the world

  1172. where I serve,

  1173. we have actually

  1174. very specific needs,

1175. places where we need people

  1176. right now.

1177. Because over the next 10 years,

1178. our goal is to plant

  1179. 486 new churches.

  1180. churches.

1181. We want to do this

  1182. in 192 new cities,

  1183. 63 new countries.

  1184. How in the world

1185. are we going to do this?

  1186. Well, we need

  1187. 1,000 more missionaries.

  1188. And that's why I'm here

  1189. speaking to you today.

  1190. 1,000 more missionaries.

1191. We need 800 more interns

  1192. to go.

  1193. And then beyond that,

  1194. somebody's got to support

  1195. these missionaries

1196. and these interns too, right?

1197. I mean, it costs money

  1198. to take the gospel

  1199. to the nations.

1200. So the vision of Daniel

    Daniel 2 chapter mention

  1201. chapter 2

  1202. is happening

  1203. right now

  1204. before our eyes.

  1205. And our calling

1206. as the people of God

  1207. is to be part

1208. of what he is doing.

  1209. See, as children,

  1210. we're not just

  1211. passive spectators

  1212. watching God work.

  1213. The way God works

  1214. and announcing

  1215. his kingdom

  1216. and bringing his kingdom

  1217. is through his church,

  1218. is through his people.

  1219. That's why Jesus

  1220. commissioned his church.

  1221. He said,

1222. go into all the world

  1223. and preach the gospel,

  1224. baptizing them

  1225. and teaching them

  1226. to observe

1227. all that I have commanded you.

1228. It is how the vision

1229. of Daniel 2 takes place.

1230. The vision of Daniel 2

  1231. will come about

  1232. fully and completely.

  1233. But God's using

1234. his people to do it.

1235. And those who are part

  1236. of God's family

1237. join in the family business.

1238. And if you want to be

1239. on the right side of history,

1240. here's where history is going.

  1241. The kingdom of God

  1242. is filling the earth.

  1243. That's why we engage

1244. in the work that God

1245. is doing around the world.

  1246. And so that raises

  1247. an important question.

  1248. In fact,

  1249. we call it

  1250. the most important question.

  1251. Which kingdom

  1252. are you living for?

1253. Are you living for a kingdom

1254. that is going to fade?

1255. Or are you living for a kingdom

  1256. that is eternal?

1257. Are you looking to find

  1258. your glory

1259. in that which is passing,

  1260. that will one day

  1261. be reduced to dust

  1262. and then swept away

  1263. by the breeze?

  1264. Or are you looking

  1265. for your glory

1266. in the kingdom of heaven?

  1267. Josh McDowell

  1268. tells a story

  1269. of an old man

1270. who came up to him

  1271. one time

1272. after he gave a message.

  1273. And by his dress

  1274. and demeanor,

  1275. it was pretty obvious

  1276. that this older gentleman

  1277. was very successful.

1278. And the older man said,

  1279. my whole life,

1280. I've been climbing the ladder

1281. trying to get to the top.

  1282. I've stepped on people

  1283. along the way

  1284. and made numerous sacrifices.

1285. Now I'm an old man

  1286. and I realize

  1287. for all these years,

  1288. I've had my ladder

  1289. leaning against

  1290. the wrong building.

1291. What are you living for?

  1292. What kingdom

  1293. are you living for?

  1294. The reason Jesus came

  1295. and lived

  1296. and died

  1297. was not so

  1298. he could create

  1299. a ladder

  1300. by which we could

  1301. climb to him.

  1302. And instead,

  1303. he's the one

  1304. who descended

  1305. Jacob's ladder

  1306. to come to us.

  1307. He is the one

  1308. who came

  1309. to make a way

  1310. for us

  1311. to be a part

  1312. of his kingdom,

  1313. to be a part

  1314. of what he's doing

  1315. here and throughout

  1316. the world.

  1317. And he invites us

  1318. to follow him

  1319. in faith,

  1320. to trust in him,

1321. to trust that by his life,

  1322. his death,

  1323. his perfect obedience,

  1324. by sacrificial death,

  1325. vindicated through

  1326. the resurrection,

1327. where he now is ascended

  1328. and reigning in heaven,

  1329. he's proven to us

  1330. that there's one kingdom

  1331. that will last.

1332. And if we are united

  1333. to him,

1334. we are part of that kingdom

1335. and we will last forever.

  1336. Where's your hope?

  1337. My only hope

  1338. in life and death.

  1339. It's found in him.

  1340. Let's pray.

  1341. Our Father,

  1342. we do thank you

  1343. for the hope

  1344. that we have

  1345. through Jesus Christ

1346. that he is the rock

  1347. and he has come

  1348. to bring his kingdom.

  1349. And Lord,

  1350. we thank you

  1351. that we live

1352. in a time in history

  1353. in which we're seeing

  1354. the fulfillment

  1355. of this promise

  1356. in such remarkable,

  1357. beautiful,

  1358. glorious ways.

  1359. And so,

  1360. oh Lord,

  1361. we pray.

  1362. We pray,

  1363. oh Lord,

  1364. that we would set

  1365. our sights on earth

  1366. instead of seeking

  1367. to find our life

1368. in things that are temporary

  1369. that we would seek

  1370. to find our hope

  1371. and our joy

1372. in things that are eternal.

  1373. We thank you

  1374. that Jesus has done

  1375. everything necessary

  1376. for us to share

  1377. in that kingdom

1378. and that it is ours

  1379. through faith

  1380. and faith alone.

  1381. So Lord,

  1382. today as your people,

  1383. we affirm that faith.

  1384. We believe

  1385. that Jesus is Lord.

  1386. We believe

  1387. that he is king

  1388. and we trust him

  1389. as our king,

  1390. as our Lord.

  1391. And we want

  1392. to follow you.

  1393. And so Lord,

  1394. we commit this day

1395. to living for the one

  1396. eternal kingdom.

  1397. We commit to that

1398. with everything that we do

1399. and how we raise our children,

  1400. how we engage

  1401. in our families,

1402. how we spend our money,

1403. how we do our jobs.

  1404. Lord,

1405. may we do it all

  1406. for your glory,

  1407. for your good,

  1408. for your praise.

  1409. And Lord,

  1410. we pray too

1411. that you would give us

1412. a heart for the world,

  1413. a heart to see

  1414. this kingdom

  1415. fill the entire globe.

  1416. See people

  1417. from every tribe

  1418. and tongue,

  1419. every ethnic group,

  1420. people in every place

  1421. come and worship

  1422. and praise you,

  1423. O Lord.

  1424. We pray this

  1425. in Jesus' name.

  1426. Amen.

  1427. Amen.

  1428. Amen.

  1429. Thank you.
