  1. With that, I'm going to invite you to turn with me.

  2. You can turn in your worship guide or in your Bible or in your phone.

  3. No matter where you turn with me, remember that this is God's word.

  4. And God tells us that his word is more precious than gold, even the finest gold.

  5. And it's sweeter than honey, even honey that comes straight from the honeycomb.

  6. And so that's why we read now Daniel 11, starting at verse 1.

  7. And as for me, in the first year of Darius the Mede, I stood up to confirm and strengthen him.

  8. And now I will show you the truth.

  9. Behold, three more kings shall arise in Persia, and a fourth shall be far richer than all of them.

  10. And when he has become strong through his riches, he shall stir up all against the kingdom of Greece.

  11. Then a mighty king shall arise, who shall rule with great dominion and do as he wills.

  12. And as soon as he has arisen, his kingdom shall be broken and divided toward the four winds of heaven,

  13. but not to his posterity, nor according to the authority with which he ruled.

  14. For his kingdom shall be plucked up and go to others besides these.

  15. Verse 5.

  16. Then the king of the south shall be strong, but one of his princes shall be stronger than he,

  17. and shall rule, and his authority shall be a great authority.

  18. After some years they shall make an alliance,

  19. and the daughter of the king of the south shall come to the king of the north to make an agreement.

  20. But she shall not retain the strength of her arm, and he and his arm shall not endure.

  21. But she shall be given up in her attendance, he who fathered her, and he who supported her in those times.

  22. Verse 7.

  23. Verse 10.

  24. Verse 7.

  25. Verse 12.

  26. Verse 13, for the king of the north shall again raise a multitude greater than the first,

  27. and after some years he shall come on with a great army and abundant supplies.

  28. In those times many shall rise against the king of the south,

  29. and the violent among your own people shall lift themselves up in order to fulfill the vision,

  30. but they shall fail.

  31. Then the king of the north shall come and throw up siege works,

  32. and take a well-fortified city, and the forces of the south shall not stand,

  33. or even his best troops, for there shall be no strength to stand.

  34. But he who comes against him shall do as he wills, and none shall stand before him.

  35. And he shall stand in the glorious land with destruction in his hand.

  36. He shall set his face to come with the strength of his whole kingdom,

  37. and he shall bring terms of an agreement and perform them.

  38. He shall give him the daughter of women to destroy the kingdom,

  39. but it shall not be to his advantage.

  40. Afterward he shall turn his face to the coastlands and shall capture many of them,

  41. but a commander shall put an end to his insolence.

  42. Indeed, he shall turn his insolence back upon him.

  43. Then he shall turn his face back toward the fortresses of his own land,

  44. but he shall stumble and fall and shall not be found.

  45. Verse 20.

  46. Then shall arise in his place one who shall send an exactor of tribute for the glory of the kingdom.

  47. But within a few days he shall be broken, neither in anger nor in battle.

  48. Verse 21.

  49. In his place shall arise a contemptible person to whom royal magistrate has not been given.

  50. He shall come in without warning and obtain the kingdom by flatteries.

  51. Armies shall be utterly swept away before him and broken, even the prince of the covenant.

  52. And from that time an alliance is made with him, he shall act deceitfully,

  53. and he shall become strong with a small people.

  54. Without warning he shall come into the richest parts of the province,

  55. and he shall do what neither his fathers nor his father's fathers have done,

  56. scattering among them plunder, spoil, and goods.

  57. He shall devise plans against strongholds, but only for a time.

  58. And he shall stir up his power and his heart against the king of the south with a great army.

  59. And the king of the south shall wage war with an exceedingly great and mighty army,

  60. but he shall not stand, for plots shall be devised against him.

  61. Even those who eat his food shall break him.

  62. His army shall be swept away, and many shall fall down slain.

  63. And as for the two kings, their hearts shall be bent on doing evil.

  64. They shall speak lies at the same table, but to no avail.

  65. For the end is yet to be at the time appointed.

  66. And he shall return to his land with great wealth,

  67. but his heart shall be set against the holy covenant.

  68. And he shall work his will and return to his own land.

  69. Verse 29.

  70. At the time appointed, he shall return and come into the south,

  71. but it shall not be this time as it was before.

  72. For ships of Kittim shall come against him,

  73. and he shall be afraid and withdraw,

  74. and shall turn back and be enraged,

  75. and take action against the holy covenant.

  76. He shall turn back and pay attention to those who forsake the holy covenant.

  77. Forces from him shall appear and profane the temple and fortress,

  78. and shall take away the regular burnt offering.

  79. And they shall set up the abomination that makes desolate.

  80. He shall seduce with flattery those who violate the covenant.

  81. But the people who know their God shall stand firm and take action.

  82. Verse 33.

  83. And the wise among the people shall make many understand,

  84. though for some days they shall stumble by sword and flame,

  85. by captivity and plunder.

  86. When they stumble, they shall receive a little help.

  87. And many shall join themselves to them with flattery.

  88. And some of the wise shall stumble,

  89. so that they may be refined, purified, and made white,

  90. until the time of the end, for it still awaits the appointed time.

  91. Verse 36.

  92. And the king shall do as he wills.

  93. He shall exalt himself and magnify himself above every god,

  94. and shall speak astonishing things against the god of gods.

  95. He shall prosper till the indignation is accomplished,

  96. for what is decreed shall be done.

  97. He shall pay no attention to the god of his fathers,

  98. or to the one beloved by women.

  99. He shall not pay attention to any other god,

  100. for he shall magnify himself above all.

  101. He shall honor the god of fortresses instead of these.

  102. A god whom his fathers did not know,

  103. he shall honor with gold and silver,

  104. with precious stones and costly gifts.

  105. He shall deal with the strongest fortresses

  106. with the help of a foreign god.

  107. Those who acknowledge him he shall load with honor.

  108. He shall make them rulers over many,

  109. and shall divide the land for a price.

  110. Verse 40.

  111. At the time of the end,

  112. the king of the south shall attack him,

  113. but the king of the north shall rush upon him like a whirlwind,

  114. with chariots and horsemen,

  115. and with many ships.

  116. And he shall come into countries,

  117. and shall overflow and pass through.

  118. He shall come into the glorious land,

  119. and tens of thousands shall fall,

  120. but these shall be delivered out of his hand,

  121. Edom and Moab,

  122. and the main part of the Ammonites.

  123. He shall stretch out his hand against the countries,

  124. and the land of Egypt shall not escape.

  125. He shall become ruler of the treasures of gold and silver,

  126. and all the precious things of Egypt,

  127. and the Libyans and the Cushites shall follow in his train.

  128. But news from the east and the north shall alarm him,

  129. and he shall go out with great fury to destroy and devote many to destruction.

  130. And he shall pitch his palatial tents between the sea and the glorious holy mountain.

  131. Yet he shall come to his end with none to help him.

  132. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  133. Our Father in heaven, we thank you and praise you again

  134. that you have not left us alone as orphans in a merciless universe,

  135. but instead you speak to us clearly through your word.

  136. And so we ask that you would speak to us this morning,

  137. that you would give us the words of encouragement that we need

  138. as we follow you in this broken and evil world.

  139. And we are grateful that we don't have to earn or deserve these things,

  140. but instead we simply ask them in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

  141. Amen.

  142. Amen.

  143. I know that some of you, maybe many of you,

  144. consider yourselves investors of some sort.

  145. Maybe it's simply investment in a retirement account.

  146. Maybe you have some sort of mutual fund on the side.

  147. Even if you're not someone who invests,

  148. of course you see the news that happens right when markets go up and down.

  149. People will tell you, oh, we're headed for a crash.

  150. Maybe a recession is coming near.

  151. There's going to be what's called a correction.

  152. And of course, these things are true for everyone, right?

  153. If the market goes down, everyone's affected by that at some level,

  154. but people have different ways of responding to it and reacting to it.

  155. And so, for example, last year in February, March,

  156. we were under lockdown for the coronavirus.

  157. We saw the stock market crash, right, at some level.

  158. Now, the question is this.

  159. If you see when you see the market crash, what is your response?

  160. There's a variety of responses, right?

  161. Some people see it as the time to sell.

  162. They are taken in by the fear of the moment.

  163. They think, well, I've lost money at this moment.

  164. I don't want to lose any more money,

  165. and so I'm going to sell before it keeps going down.

  166. Other people think of this as the time to buy.

  167. Stocks are at, there's a deal right now.

  168. I'm going to get in and invest as much as I can

  169. because I know it's going to go back up.

  170. And some people simply hold on, right?

  171. And so there's the same situation for many people,

  172. different circumstances.

  173. And these different circumstances, in many ways,

  174. are affected by what your view is about history.

  175. What do you believe about the history of the stock market?

  176. What do you believe that the future holds for you?

  177. It's your beliefs, it's your understanding of history

  178. that determines your response.

  179. Now, when all of these things were happening,

  180. PCA pastors across the country,

  181. we received these emails from the organization

  182. that handles PCA pastors' retirement,

  183. warning us not to overreact to market crashes, right?

  184. You may see your retirement account dropping.

  185. Don't be panicked.

  186. So they sent us this first note that said this.

  187. The market rewards patience and resilience.

  188. As the following chart from the New York Times shows,

  189. stocks generally reward investors

  190. who look at their investment in terms of decades

  191. and not days.

  192. Look at their investments in terms of decades, not days.

  193. Mature investors often do things

  194. that are counterintuitive.

  195. When stocks slide, it's not time to sell them.

  196. Rather, it's an opportunity to purchase them at a discount.

  197. And then in this letter, they provide this picture

  198. that shows what the stock market

  199. has looked like over history.

  200. And the point is to say,

  201. if you think about this in terms of decades,

  202. you'll have some perspective.

  203. You won't panic in the moment

  204. because you know this is just for a time.

  205. It will not last forever.

  206. Brothers and sisters, as we come to this passage,

  207. the goal is to give us and Daniel

  208. an understanding of how history works.

  209. That we would not think when we look at evil in the world

  210. in terms of days, but in terms of decades.

  211. We would understand the pattern

  212. of how things work in this world

  213. so that we could respond with wisdom

  214. rather than foolishness.

  215. We can respond rather than react.

  216. And so that's what we're gonna see here.

  217. I'm gonna point out primarily three things to you.

  218. First of all, the pattern of history.

  219. Second of all, the control of history.

  220. And then our response to history.

  221. We're gonna look at the pattern of history,

  222. the control of history, and the response to history.

  223. Just as, if you're familiar with the markets,

  224. you know it's always going up and down,

  225. up and down, up and down, right?

  226. You look at this graph that they give,

  227. there's times when things are less,

  228. there's times when things are more.

  229. The same is true of history.

  230. We see this pattern that there's a constant rise

  231. and fall of nations.

  232. There is a constant ebb and flow to how geopolitics work.

  233. We see in verses two through four,

  234. a summary of things we've seen already

  235. in the book of Daniel,

  236. that there's the Persian empire

  237. that's going to lead to Alexander the Great.

  238. Then we're gonna go beyond Alexander the Great,

  239. verse four.

  240. His kingdom, if you remember,

  241. it's broken into four pieces.

  242. And then in verses five through 20,

  243. we see the struggle and conflict

  244. between the king of the north and the king of the south.

  245. The king of the south is coming from Egypt.

  246. The king of the north is coming from Syria.

  247. And this is the section through verse 21

  248. where we see those rise words over and over.

  249. Okay, so my count is that of those I gave you,

  250. there's eight.

  251. However, I think I read two.

  252. I double-checked this,

  253. and then as I was reading, I read a second raise.

  254. So if you got nine, I don't fault you.

  255. But this word appears over and over again.

  256. Arise, raise, rise.

  257. And the purpose, the reason,

  258. the reason it's showing up over and over again

  259. is to highlight this pattern.

  260. As soon as one king or kingdom is powerful,

  261. he falls and another takes over.

  262. Alexander the Great, wow, he's so wonderful,

  263. dies at age 33.

  264. There's just this constant spin.

  265. You don't expect or know,

  266. you know no one's gonna stay in control

  267. and power for very long.

  268. There's gonna be this constant back and forth.

  269. We see this between the kingdoms of the north

  270. and the kingdom of the south.

  271. The author is telling us here,

  272. no sooner has one kingdom arisen

  273. than it's replaced by another.

  274. That is the pattern of history.

  275. That's how things work.

  276. So remember, things get bad with the stock market.

  277. Often it's foolish to sell.

  278. We think in terms of days, in terms of decades.

  279. Things get bad in history.

  280. It is foolish to give up.

  281. We know from this passage,

  282. from the way the Bible talks about history,

  283. before too long,

  284. that wicked kingdom and ruler will fall.

  285. In other words, as we watch the evil in this world,

  286. we know it is only for a time.

  287. God is constantly bringing down

  288. and raising up kings and kingdoms.

  289. We have perspective.

  290. We understand how history works.

  291. And so I've mentioned to you before,

  292. I'm a book by a man named Chris Wright

  293. about the book of Daniel.

  294. He points out that there's two errors

  295. that we can fall into

  296. if we don't understand the way history works.

  297. One error is to fear the rulers of this world too much.

  298. We forget they're just here for a moment.

  299. God's gonna take them away.

  300. And so we shake in fear

  301. when we should in fact have confidence in God.

  302. The other temptation we can fall into

  303. other than fear is to love them

  304. and idolize them too much.

  305. To think that being close

  306. to the power centers of this world

  307. is going to be our key to success.

  308. We see this over and over

  309. from Christian leaders

  310. in the history of the church

  311. that there's something seductive

  312. about being close to the powerful.

  313. There's something that's wonderful

  314. and alluring about having your picture taken

  315. with a president or a senator, right?

  316. These are things that people brag about.

  317. There's something that's just alluring

  318. about having your opinions published

  319. in a major publication.

  320. And remember,

  321. wherever the power center is,

  322. wherever the power is,

  323. it will only be there for a time.

  324. Don't shake and tremble

  325. at the powers of this world.

  326. Don't idolize them.

  327. Don't be drawn in by them.

  328. Be someone who's wise.

  329. Understand how history works.

  330. Know that as soon as one,

  331. they'll be replaced by another.

  332. There is a futility,

  333. in other words, to history.

  334. Now, if you're not a Christian,

  335. I want to suggest to you

  336. that this actually makes

  337. much more sense of our world

  338. than the views of history

  339. that we're given in our culture.

  340. So there's, among many,

  341. this idea

  342. that we're on this road to progress.

  343. That somehow,

  344. generation after generation,

  345. generation,

  346. we're going to improve morally.

  347. We're going to transcend

  348. the people who came before us.

  349. They were stupid and foolish.

  350. We, however,

  351. are wise and enlightened.

  352. Now, there is a sense

  353. in which history is moving forward.

  354. We have greater

  355. and greater technology.

  356. The problem is

  357. that has not solved

  358. our moral problems.

  359. Now, I don't have time today.

  360. There's a book

  361. that recently came out

  362. by a man named Tim Keller

  363. called Hope in Times of Fear.

  364. And he talks about this phenomenon

  365. in the very last chapter,

  366. in chapter 12.

  367. And he points out a few things,

  368. one of which is that

  369. technology has not helped us at all.

  370. In fact,

  371. if we look at the threats

  372. to the world,

  373. I think he lists five major threats

  374. to civilization.

  375. Technology has made,

  376. I think,

  377. three or four of them much worse.

  378. And in fact,

  379. it's technology

  380. that allows things

  381. like pandemics

  382. to spread around the world

  383. very quickly.

  384. And so if you believe

  385. that we are going to improve

  386. as people morally,

  387. you are flying

  388. in the face

  389. of all the evidence

  390. and the facts.

  391. It's the Bible

  392. that actually gives us

  393. a realistic view of history.

  394. No matter how much

  395. things improve,

  396. the human heart

  397. still stays wicked

  398. and evil.

  399. And so our only hope

  400. is for salvation

  401. from outside of this world.

  402. Our only hope

  403. is for someone

  404. not who can change technology,

  405. but who can change hearts.

  406. And so as we understand

  407. the pattern of history,

  408. history,

  409. we know it involves

  410. ups and downs.

  411. We're not taken in

  412. by one moment.

  413. We're not taken in

  414. by one year

  415. or one event.

  416. We have a calm,

  417. a perspective.

  418. Just as an investor

  419. watches the stock market

  420. go up and down

  421. and they know,

  422. I'm thinking about this

  423. in terms of decades,

  424. we watch history

  425. and events

  426. and evil

  427. go up and down

  428. in the world

  429. and even as we might

  430. grieve about it,

  431. we have a perspective

  432. on it.

  433. We know

  434. how it works.

  435. Now there's another pattern

  436. that we're given here,

  437. not just the pattern

  438. of kings going up and down,

  439. but we see the pattern

  440. that in history

  441. we should expect

  442. and prepare for

  443. the persecution

  444. of God's people.

  445. So this battle

  446. between the north

  447. and the south

  448. takes up

  449. verses 1

  450. through 21 or so

  451. and then we turn

  452. to this new figure,

  453. verse 21,

  454. there's going to arise

  455. a contemptible person

  456. and we're told

  457. the details

  458. of this contemptible person

  459. verses 21

  460. through 35.

  461. I'm not going to dive

  462. into the details here

  463. because of the link

  464. of this passage

  465. and the limits

  466. of our time this morning

  467. but I'll simply tell you

  468. verses 21

  469. through 35

  470. is telling us

  471. about the same figure

  472. we saw in Daniel

    Daniel 8 chapter mention

  473. chapter 8.

  474. This is Antiochus IV

  475. who is someone

  476. who persecuted

  477. God's people.

  478. He brought intense

  479. persecution

  480. in the 2nd century BC

  481. and I'll give you

  482. the same quote

  483. that I gave you

  484. last time

  485. in Daniel chapter 8

    Daniel 8 chapter mention

  486. from a man named

  487. David Chapman.

  488. Antiochus IV

  489. who styled himself

  490. Epiphanes,

  491. God manifest,

  492. invaded Jerusalem,

  493. despoiled the temple,

  494. commanded the burning

  495. of the scriptures,

  496. forbade the covenant

  497. right of circumcision,

  498. put to death

  499. many faithful Jews

  500. and ultimately instituted

  501. pagan sacrifices

  502. in the Jerusalem temple.

  503. In other words,

  504. Daniel is not just prepared

  505. for the pattern of history.

  506. He knows persecution

  507. is coming for God's people.

  508. This is something

  509. that is sure

  510. and definite

  511. in the future.

  512. not only does it happen

  513. in the 2nd century

  514. but then we see

  515. this twist,

  516. this switch

  517. in verse 36.

  518. Up through verse 35

  519. everything aligns

  520. with Antiochus IV.

  521. Verse 36

  522. we begin to hear

  523. things about this king

  524. that don't line up

  525. at all with Antiochus IV

  526. or any other historical figure

  527. we can identify.

  528. And so many people believe,

  529. scholars believe

  530. what's being talked about here

  531. is a future,

  532. even future to us,

  533. persecutor

  534. of God's people.

  535. So we switch

  536. from a historical figure

  537. that we know about

  538. to someone,

  539. it's a persecution

  540. that's going to happen

  541. in the future.

  542. And this type of persecution

  543. sounds like

  544. the kind of thing

  545. that's going to happen

  546. at the very end of the world.

  547. In fact,

  548. we see that explicitly

  549. in verse 40,

  550. the very beginning,

  551. we're told this king

  552. is at the time

  553. of the end.

  554. And then in verse 45,

  555. however,

  556. so he's coming at the end,

  557. however,

  558. verse 45,

  559. he's going to come

  560. to an end.

  561. So again,

  562. just like rulers

  563. and kingdoms in general,

  564. these persecutors

  565. who are after God

  566. and his people

  567. are going to come,

  568. they're going to be powerful,

  569. and then in a moment

  570. they'll be gone.

  571. And so as Christians,

  572. we know,

  573. as we look at history then,

  574. it's not just

  575. that there's ups and downs

  576. that we keep

  577. the long term in mind,

  578. there is going

  579. to be persecution.

  580. We shouldn't be surprised

  581. by this.

  582. In fact,

  583. if we're in a time

  584. where we don't face persecution,

  585. we should know,

  586. oh,

  587. we're in a strange part

  588. of church history.

  589. Wow,

  590. this is not normal

  591. for Christians

  592. around the world

  593. or throughout history.

  594. And so if we are

  595. the wise investor,

  596. we're going to take

  597. wise action,

  598. we know our job is this,

  599. we prepare

  600. for persecution.

  601. We're ready for it.

  602. We know that it's

  603. a normal,

  604. regular part

  605. of the Christian life.

  606. We're students

  607. of church history

  608. and scripture.

  609. We see God's faithfulness

  610. to his people

  611. generation after generation,

  612. decade after decade.

  613. We know there are times

  614. and things that are hard

  615. and they only last

  616. for a time.

  617. We've actually seen

  618. that in this series,

  619. right?

  620. Part of the reason

  621. we're studying Daniel

  622. is to know those things.

  623. We see God's faithfulness

  624. to Daniel.

  625. We're reminded Babylon

  626. was only powerful

  627. for a time.

  628. We are reminded

  629. of God's faithfulness

  630. to us.

  631. Powers in this world

  632. will only rule

  633. for a time.

  634. The foolish action

  635. then would be

  636. overly frightened,

  637. overly scared

  638. of persecution,

  639. to abandon the faith.

  640. That would be like

  641. the person who sells

  642. as soon as things

  643. get bad, right?

  644. They sell their stock.

  645. What are we going to do

  646. if and when

  647. the stock of Christianity

  648. in this world falls?

  649. That's part of the warning here.

  650. Do we sell it

  651. or do we take

  652. the long-term view?

  653. Do we think

  654. that we're looking

  655. at decades

  656. rather than days?

  657. Right?

  658. Great Depression

  659. of the 1930s.

  660. Wow, it's really bad.

  661. Also, it's over.

  662. Stock market's recovered.

  663. Persecution,

  664. when it comes

  665. for God's people,

  666. yes, it's going

  667. to be really bad.

  668. Also, it's going to end.

  669. Things are going

  670. to recover.

  671. So we understand

  672. and know history.

  673. We avoid the temptation

  674. to sell now,

  675. to give up on God

  676. and his church

  677. and his ways

  678. just because something's

  679. bad for a moment

  680. and for a time.

  681. And so we're seeing here

  682. chapter 10.

  683. Again, we want

  684. to be wise people.

  685. We want to be people

  686. who know the pattern

  687. of history.

  688. We see here also,

  689. though, there's not

  690. just a pattern to history,

  691. there's also a control

  692. in history.

  693. The reason that these

  694. things operate

  695. in this way

  696. that's predictable

  697. that we understand

  698. is that we know

  699. that there is someone

  700. who is in charge

  701. of everything.

  702. Now, in previous chapters,

  703. when we've looked

  704. at prophecy,

  705. for example,

  706. chapter 7,

  707. I've told you,

  708. well, you know,

  709. there's lots of debate

  710. among scholars

  711. about what this means.

  712. Some people think this.

  713. Some people think that.

  714. We come to chapter 8,

  715. especially when we look

  716. at verses 21 through 35,

  717. there is virtually

  718. no debate.

  719. The reason there's

  720. virtually no debate

  721. is because the actions

  722. given here

  723. are so precise

  724. and align perfectly

  725. with real historical events

  726. that have happened

  727. in the past.

  728. So we know exactly

  729. what Daniel's

  730. being told about.

  731. Now, we could spend

  732. an hour going through

  733. all the debates

  734. and the details of it.

  735. If you want to see

  736. everything in this chapter

  737. and how it plays out

  738. in history,

  739. there's a variety

  740. of commentaries you can get.

  741. One of them is called

  742. How to Read Daniel

  743. by a man named

  744. Tremper Longman.

  745. I'm going to give you

  746. one example.

  747. So chapter 11,

  748. look at me at verse 6.

  749. It tells us

  750. there's an alliance

  751. and the daughter

  752. of the king of the south,

  753. remember the king

  754. of the south's in Egypt,

  755. shall come to the king

  756. of the north

  757. to make an agreement.

  758. But she shall not retain

  759. the strength of her arm

  760. and his arm

  761. shall not endure,

  762. but she shall be given up

  763. and her attendance.

  764. It's he who fathered her

  765. and he who supported her

  766. in those times.

  767. Well, this aligns perfectly

  768. with historical events

  769. that we know about.

  770. It turns out

  771. there was a marriage

  772. between the daughter

  773. of Ptolemy II

  774. in the south

  775. and the grandson

  776. of Seleucus

  777. in the north.

  778. The grandson

  779. had an ex-wife

  780. who killed the daughter

  781. of Ptolemy

  782. and that's how

  783. this plays out.

  784. That's the level

  785. of precise detail

  786. that we have here

  787. in this passage.

  788. All these events here

  789. have this similar level

  790. of detail.

  791. We're not going to go

  792. into all of them.

  793. The point is this though.

  794. God knows the future

  795. not just in general.

  796. He knows it

  797. in excruciating precision

  798. and detail.

  799. It's not just that God

  800. is in control

  801. in this big picture,

  802. 40,000 feet sort of way.

  803. It's that God

  804. is in control

  805. in an on the ground,

  806. moment by moment,

  807. day by day sort of way.

  808. God does not just know

  809. the future as well.

  810. He controls it.

  811. Remember,

  812. I pointed this out

  813. when we did our

  814. confession of faith.

  815. The word appointed

  816. shows up over and over again.

  817. Verse 27,

  818. verse 29,

  819. verse 35.

  820. Verse 36,

  821. we're told what is decreed

  822. shall be done.

  823. Well,

  824. who decreed it?

  825. God decrees it.

  826. And then,

  827. verse 45,

  828. remember,

  829. we're reading about

  830. this future persecutor.

  831. He shall come to his end

  832. with none

  833. to help him.

  834. In other words,

  835. as we're looking

  836. for encouragement

  837. from God

  838. as we face times of evil,

  839. we're reminded

  840. of God's precision

  841. in his control.

  842. God chose us

  843. to be the people

  844. at this church

  845. right now,

  846. this year,

  847. and last year.

  848. God chose us

  849. as the specific people

  850. that he wanted

  851. to walk through

  852. the coronavirus together

  853. at Cheyenne Mountain

  854. Presbyterian Church.

  855. God chose you

  856. to be stationed

  857. at Fort Carson.

  858. He decided

  859. you wouldn't be stationed

  860. somewhere else

  861. in the country.

  862. That was God's decision.

  863. God decided

  864. that when I bought

  865. a house on Coolcrest,

  866. I was going to buy

  867. the green house

  868. and not the blue house.

  869. Okay?

  870. It has a blue door.

  871. That's another story.

  872. We could go back

  873. to last week's illustration.

  874. Remember the kids

  875. in the back of the car.

  876. It's not just

  877. that God is the one

  878. driving us

  879. and we know

  880. that we're safe

  881. because of it,

  882. but God has decided

  883. what road he's going

  884. to be on.

  885. He's decided

  886. what speed

  887. he's going to take it

  888. and he's decided

  889. where it's going.

  890. Elections

  891. and rulers

  892. are not

  893. outside of God's control.

  894. God specifically

  895. chose Joe Biden,

  896. John Southers,

  897. and Jared Polis

  898. to rule our city,

  899. state,

  900. and nation.

  901. In some way,

  902. that's part

  903. of his grand plan.

  904. He's not surprised

  905. by it.

  906. He's using it

  907. for his purposes.

  908. God chose the kids

  909. that you have.

  910. He assigned them

  911. to you.

  912. God chose your spouse.

  913. God is in control

  914. even over the smallest

  915. and tiniest details.

  916. We are meant

  917. to see this here

  918. like Daniel

  919. to be encouraged

  920. in terrible

  921. and difficult

  922. and evil times.

  923. When you face

  924. challenges

  925. and persecution

  926. in the world,

  927. you remember

  928. God chose for me

  929. to be in this situation

  930. at this time.

  931. And that means

  932. that he knew

  933. in advance

  934. he has given me

  935. everything I need

  936. to stay

  937. and stand strong.

  938. We are able

  939. to be encouraged

  940. in the midst of evil

  941. because we know

  942. the pattern of history.

  943. We know that God

  944. is in absolute

  945. and complete control

  946. over history.

  947. And so his people

  948. can take hope

  949. and courage

  950. no matter what comes

  951. and no matter

  952. what happens.

  953. And we've seen here

  954. our encouragement,

  955. the way that God

  956. has given us

  957. a pattern

  958. and he's also

  959. given us his control.

  960. There's not just

  961. a pattern

  962. and a control of history,

  963. we also see

  964. our response

  965. in history.

  966. And I've quoted this

  967. over and over again

  968. through this series

  969. and we're now at it.

  970. Verse 32,

  971. he shall seduce

  972. with flattery

  973. those who violate

  974. the covenant,

  975. but the people

  976. who know their God

  977. shall stand firm

  978. and take action.

  979. Now this is talking

  980. about the persecution

  981. that happened

  982. in the second century.

  983. And there were

  984. some Jews

  985. during this persecution

  986. who abandoned

  987. the faith.

  988. Okay, so that's

  989. what it's talking

  990. about here

  991. in verse 32.

  992. There's some

  993. that gave up Judaism.

  994. They are the ones

  995. who are seduced

  996. with flattery

  997. and violated

  998. the covenant.

  999. There's also those

  1000. who despite

  1001. the persecution

  1002. of Antiochus IV

  1003. remain strong

  1004. and firm.

  1005. Those are the ones

  1006. we're told here

  1007. who knew their God

  1008. that would stand firm

  1009. and take action.

  1010. And then we see

  1011. some more ideas here

  1012. verses 33 through 35.

1013. What are these people doing?

  1014. We've talked about

  1015. the wise investor.

1016. We also see the wisdom

  1017. among God's people.

  1018. Verse 33,

1019. the wise among the people

  1020. shall make many understand.

  1021. Though for some days

  1022. they shall stumble

  1023. by sword and flame,

  1024. by captivity and plunder.

  1025. Some of the wise

  1026. shall stumble

1027. so that they may be refined,

  1028. purified,

  1029. and made white

1030. until the time of the end.

  1031. For it still awaits

  1032. the appointed time.

  1033. In other words,

  1034. these people stood firm

1035. during a time of persecution

  1036. because they knew God

  1037. and they encouraged

  1038. one another.

  1039. They made mistakes

  1040. and failed at times.

  1041. God used that

  1042. to purify them

  1043. and strengthen them.

  1044. The point for us

  1045. is this.

  1046. We know

  1047. God's faithfulness.

  1048. We know his faithfulness

  1049. in terms of facts

  1050. and history.

  1051. We know his faithfulness

  1052. here to Daniel

  1053. in this book

  1054. that we're studying together.

  1055. That's part of how

1056. we grow in knowing our God.

  1057. We know our God

  1058. throughout church history

  1059. after the scriptures

  1060. were finished being written.

1061. We can see his faithfulness

  1062. to the church

  1063. generation after generation,

  1064. country after country,

  1065. persecution after persecution.

  1066. We know that God

  1067. remains faithful

  1068. and delivers his people.

1069. That is part of how

  1070. we know our God

1071. so that we can stand firm.

  1072. We know him

1073. not just in terms of

  1074. facts and history

  1075. though we also know

  1076. our God relationally.

  1077. Remember we talked

  1078. prior in Daniel

  1079. about the fact that

1080. prayer is what prepares us

1081. for what's ahead of us.

  1082. We are people

1083. who want to know God

  1084. at a personal level.

  1085. We see his answers

1086. to prayer over and over again

  1087. throughout our lives

1088. so that when trouble comes

  1089. we have confidence

  1090. that he's in control.

  1091. We look back

  1092. to his faithfulness

  1093. in the past

  1094. and it allows us

  1095. to know our God

  1096. and stand firm

  1097. in the present.

  1098. Remember I talked

1099. when we were in Matthew

    Matthew 21 chapter mention

  1100. chapter 21

  1101. many many years ago

  1102. in 2017

  1103. I told you

  1104. a story

1105. about a friend of mine

  1106. dealing with

  1107. unanswered prayer

  1108. and I asked him

  1109. how he stood strong

  1110. in his faith

1111. and he told me this

1112. you use what you've seen

  1113. in the dark

  1114. or in the light

  1115. to help you trust

  1116. in the dark.

1117. You use what you've seen

  1118. in the light

  1119. to help you trust

  1120. in the dark.

  1121. Brothers and sisters

1122. if we are going to be

  1123. people who know

  1124. our God

  1125. we know God now

  1126. and see his faithfulness

  1127. in the light

1128. so that when the dark

  1129. comes we trust him.

  1130. We are able

  1131. to know our God

  1132. to stand firm

  1133. and take action.

  1134. Now it's not just 32

  1135. but verse 33

1136. the wise among the people

  1137. shall make many understand.

1138. So we stand firm here

1139. not just by knowing our God

1140. but by doing it together.

1141. We've talked over and over

  1142. about the fact

  1143. that God

1144. does not just call us

  1145. individually

  1146. into a relationship

  1147. with himself

  1148. but he gives us

  1149. his people

  1150. the church

1151. that we would be able

  1152. to remind one another

  1153. of the truth.

  1154. It would be foolish

  1155. for us

1156. to try to stand alone.

  1157. But instead

  1158. these wise people

  1159. it's not just

  1160. that they know God

1161. but they know each other.

  1162. It's the same thing

  1163. that we talked about

1164. at the end of 1 Peter

  1165. that there are people

  1166. who are linking

  1167. their arms together

  1168. and singing one song

1169. so that they would be able

  1170. to move forward

1171. no matter what is going on

  1172. in the world.

1173. And so I'll give you

  1174. a couple more applications

1175. here of what it looks like

  1176. to know our God

1177. so that we can stand firm.

1178. To be able to talk

  1179. with one another

  1180. verse 33

1181. the wise among the people

  1182. shall make many understand.

1183. I'm going to give you

  1184. a very simple

  1185. and extremely boring application.

  1186. One of the ways

  1187. we prepare

  1188. to stand firm

  1189. is by being here

  1190. together

  1191. on Sunday morning.

  1192. This is the place

  1193. where God

  1194. grows his people

  1195. in knowing him.

  1196. This is the place

  1197. where God grows

  1198. his people

  1199. in knowing

  1200. each other.

1201. I want you to imagine

  1202. for a second

1203. I know many of you

  1204. take your firearms

  1205. very seriously

1206. I want you to imagine

  1207. someone

1208. who brags about the gun

  1209. that they have

  1210. for home defense.

  1211. Right?

  1212. And you ask them

1213. well when was the last time

  1214. you used it?

  1215. I can't remember.

1216. Do you ever go to the range

  1217. and practice?

  1218. No not really.

1219. I just have it here.

  1220. Right?

  1221. We do not rise

  1222. to the occasion

  1223. we fall

  1224. to the level

  1225. of our training.

  1226. God has provided

  1227. his worship

  1228. with his people

  1229. to prepare us

  1230. and strengthen us

  1231. for whatever

  1232. is to come ahead.

  1233. And so be

  1234. with his people.

  1235. Make it a priority

  1236. to be

  1237. in worship.

  1238. Make it a priority

  1239. to worship God

  1240. and hear from him

  1241. in his word.

1242. That is how we grow

  1243. in knowing him.

  1244. Now we've seen here

  1245. that there's this pattern

  1246. right?

  1247. There's this control

  1248. and I started out

  1249. by telling you

  1250. about the idea

  1251. of investing

1252. that you want to make sure

  1253. you're investing

1254. in things that are true

  1255. and wise.

  1256. You may remember

1257. when we were in the book

  1258. of 1 Peter

  1259. at the very beginning

  1260. we were told

  1261. about our inheritance.

  1262. What it is

  1263. that we invest in

1264. and I'm going to turn

  1265. there now.

1266. This is what we see

  1267. in our Lord Jesus.

  1268. We're told

  1269. verse 3

  1270. blessed be the God

  1271. and Father

1272. of our Lord Jesus Christ.

1273. According to his great mercy

  1274. he has caused us

  1275. to be born again

  1276. to a living hope

  1277. through the resurrection

  1278. of Jesus Christ

  1279. from the dead.

  1280. To an inheritance

  1281. listen to this

  1282. that is imperishable

  1283. undefiled

  1284. and unfading.

  1285. Kept in heaven

  1286. for you

  1287. who by God's power

  1288. are being guarded

  1289. through faith

  1290. for salvation

  1291. ready to be revealed

  1292. in the last time.

  1293. In other words

  1294. there is only one

  1295. sure and true investment.

  1296. It is the inheritance

  1297. that has been earned

  1298. for us

  1299. by Jesus Christ

  1300. and cannot be touched

  1301. by anything

  1302. in this world.

1303. That's what it means here

  1304. that it's imperishable

  1305. undefiled

  1306. and unfading.

  1307. In other words

  1308. the only good

  1309. and true investment

  1310. is this

  1311. that we would follow

  1312. after our Lord

  1313. and Savior Jesus Christ

  1314. knowing

  1315. that he has secured

  1316. for us

  1317. something that cannot

  1318. be changed

  1319. or destroyed.

  1320. he when he came

  1321. and lived

  1322. a perfect life

  1323. on this earth

  1324. the life we should

  1325. have lived

  1326. and when he died

  1327. a death

  1328. the death

  1329. that we should

  1330. have died

  1331. to take our

  1332. punishment for sin

  1333. he at that time

  1334. earned for us

  1335. something that cannot

  1336. be changed

  1337. or shaken.

  1338. In other words

  1339. we don't risk

  1340. that for anything.

  1341. No matter what comes

  1342. no matter what happens

  1343. no matter how

  1344. evil things get

  1345. we trust

  1346. in our Lord

  1347. and Savior

  1348. Jesus Christ.

  1349. Now the first

  1350. letter

  1351. that I read

  1352. to you

  1353. came at the

  1354. end of February

  1355. as the stock market

  1356. was going up

  1357. and down.

  1358. Things continued

  1359. to get worse

1360. and so we were sent

  1361. pastors were sent

  1362. this second letter

  1363. in March

  1364. we were told this

  1365. it is very important

  1366. that investors

  1367. maintain their

  1368. long term perspective

  1369. during this very

  1370. disappointing period.

  1371. We believe

  1372. the market

  1373. is being driven

  1374. down by investors

  1375. focused on

  1376. short term

  1377. strategies.

  1378. Staying focused

  1379. on our long term

  1380. objectives

  1381. is a winning

  1382. strategy.

  1383. One of our

  1384. board members

  1385. works for a

  1386. legendary investor

  1387. who has famously

  1388. said nervous energy

  1389. is a great

  1390. destroyer of wealth.

  1391. We are in total

  1392. agreement with this

  1393. statement and would

  1394. only add that the

  1395. peace of God

  1396. which has been

  1397. given to us

  1398. through the death

  1399. and resurrection

  1400. of Jesus Christ

  1401. is our constant

  1402. hope.

  1403. brothers and

  1404. sisters

  1405. how do we

  1406. what do we do

  1407. when we are

  1408. discouraged

  1409. when we're faced

  1410. with fear

  1411. and anger

  1412. at the evil

  1413. of the world

  1414. around us.

  1415. As Christians

  1416. we know it's

  1417. very important

  1418. that we maintain

  1419. a long term

  1420. perspective

  1421. during this

  1422. very disappointing

  1423. period.

  1424. We believe

  1425. the world

  1426. or faith

  1427. is being threatened

  1428. but in fact

  1429. that's simply

  1430. a short term

  1431. strategy.

  1432. staying focused

  1433. on our long term

  1434. goals

  1435. is a winning

  1436. strategy.

  1437. And in fact

  1438. we can be

  1439. reminded of the

  1440. words of our

  1441. Lord Jesus

  1442. in Luke chapter 9

    Luke 9 chapter mention

  1443. if anyone would

  1444. come after me

  1445. let him deny

  1446. himself

  1447. and take up

  1448. his cross

  1449. daily and follow

  1450. me.

  1451. For whoever

  1452. would save

  1453. his life

  1454. will lose it

  1455. but whoever

  1456. loses his life

  1457. for my sake

  1458. will save it.

  1459. For what does

  1460. it profit a man

  1461. if he gains

  1462. the whole world

  1463. and loses

  1464. or forfeits

  1465. himself?

  1466. For whoever

  1467. is ashamed

  1468. of me

  1469. and my words

  1470. of him

  1471. will the

  1472. son of man

  1473. be ashamed

  1474. when he

  1475. comes in

  1476. his glory

  1477. in the glory

  1478. of the father

  1479. and of the

  1480. holy angels.

  1481. Brothers and

  1482. sisters the

  1483. people who

  1484. know their

  1485. God

  1486. shall stand

  1487. firm

  1488. and take

  1489. action.

  1490. Let's pray.

  1491. Our father

  1492. in heaven

  1493. we praise

  1494. you and

  1495. thank you

  1496. for your

  1497. word that

  1498. you've

  1499. given us

  1500. to encourage

  1501. us and

  1502. we ask

  1503. that we

  1504. would grow

  1505. in our

  1506. knowledge

  1507. of you

  1508. that we

  1509. would be

  1510. able to

  1511. stand firm

  1512. no matter

  1513. what.

  1514. We thank

  1515. you for

  1516. the

  1517. encouragement

  1518. you give

  1519. us as we

  1520. face the

  1521. evil in

  1522. the world

  1523. around us

  1524. and we

  1525. ask that

  1526. you'd

  1527. continue

  1528. to

  1529. strengthen

  1530. us

  1531. no

  1532. matter

  1533. what

  1534. comes.

  1535. We ask

  1536. these

  1537. things in

  1538. the mighty

  1539. name of

  1540. Jesus

  1541. Christ.

  1542. Amen.
