  1. So, as John mentioned in his prayer, I just got back last night from our Denomination's yearly gathering in St. Louis,

  2. and I know many of you are curious and interested in what happened.

  3. I'll just give you a brief summary, which is that lots of good things happened.

  4. I'm encouraged about the future of our denomination, and I'm happy to talk about it more with you one-on-one if you'd like.

  5. Many of you know, of course, we're celebrating Independence Day, our independence from Britain,

  6. but now, of course, we also have a special relationship with Britain.

  7. Our church, in a similar way, has a special relationship with Westside PCA, our sister church here in town,

  8. and it's our pleasure to welcome Davis Morgan, who's their pastor, to bring God's Word to us today.

  9. So, Davis, welcome.

  10. Greetings, Cheyenne Mountain.

  11. It is so great to be with you on this Lord's Day, on this Independence Day,

  12. to come together and to bring God's Word from Ephesians chapter 3.

    Ephesians 3 chapter mention

  13. And so I want to invite you, if you have your bulletin there, I see the text is there for you,

  14. or if you would like to open your Bible to Ephesians 3.

  15. We, as a church, have been going through the book of Ephesians.

  16. We just wrapped up chapter 3 about a month ago or so,

  17. and we were studying the book of Ephesians to learn, as a church,

  18. just what we are called to be as a church.

  19. As Christians, our identity in Christ,

  20. our identity as being part of the body of Christ in the troubling days in which we find ourselves,

  21. the book of Ephesians was a timely word from Scripture for us,

  22. and so I pray and hope that it will be timely for you as well.

  23. So draw your attention to the reading and to the preaching of God's holy,

  24. His inspired Word that He has preserved for us as people.

  25. Ephesians 3, 1 through 13.

  26. For this reason, I, Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus on behalf of you Gentiles,

  27. assuming that you have heard of the stewardship of God's grace that was given to me for you,

  28. how the mystery was made known to me by revelation, as I have written briefly.

  29. When you read this, you can perceive my insight into the mystery of Christ,

  30. which was not made known to the sons of men in other generations,

  31. as it has now been revealed to His holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit.

  32. This mystery is that the Gentiles are fellow heirs, members of the same body,

  33. and partakers of the promise in Christ Jesus through the gospel.

  34. Of this gospel, I was made a minister according to the gift of God's grace,

  35. which was given to me by the working of His power.

  36. To me, though I am the very least of all the saints,

  37. this grace was given to preach to the Gentiles the unsearchable riches of Christ,

  38. and to bring to light for everyone what is the plan of the mystery hidden for the ages in God,

  39. who created all things, so that through the church the manifold wisdom of God

  40. might be made known to the rulers and authorities in the heavenly places.

  41. This was according to the eternal purpose that He realized in Christ Jesus our Lord,

  42. in whom we have boldness and access with confidence through our faith in Him.

  43. So I ask you not to lose heart over what I am suffering for you,

  44. which is your glory.

  45. This is the Word of God.

  46. Thanks be to Him.

  47. Let us pray for our time in His Word.

  48. Lord God, we do thank You for this time.

  49. We thank You for this Word from Ephesians 3.

  50. We thank You that we have the privilege as Your people to hear this Word.

  51. And I pray that for every one of us in this room,

  52. we would not overlook that fact,

  53. that it is a privilege to hear Your Word proclaimed.

  54. And so we ask that You would give us humble hearts, Lord.

  55. We ask that You would give us ears to hear and to understand,

  56. eyes to see and to savor the glory of Jesus,

  57. Lord, and a spirit, a spirit to respond with faith,

  58. with repentance, with joy, with comfort,

  59. Lord, with adoration and worship of You,

  60. the King of kings, the Lord of lords.

  61. And Heavenly Father, we also pray for our little theologians

  62. that are in here, Lord,

  63. our covenant children,

  64. those little ears that will be listening as well.

  65. We pray that You would give them the gift of understanding Your Word,

  66. illumination by Your spirits.

  67. You say in John 3 that,

  68. Lord, we cannot understand a single thing from heaven

  69. unless You give it to us, You grant it to us.

  70. And so we ask that You would do that by Your grace.

  71. In Jesus' name, amen.

  72. Amen.

  73. Amen.

  74. Fifty-six men signed it.

  75. Their conviction resulted in untold sufferings

  76. for themselves and for their families.

  77. Of the fifty-six men,

  78. five were captured by the British

  79. and tortured before they died.

  80. Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned.

  81. Two lost their sons in the Revolutionary Army.

  82. Another had two sons captured.

  83. Nine of the fifty-six fought and died from wounds or the hardships of war.

  84. And yet if you were to ask them,

  85. was it worth it?

  86. Was the Declaration of Independence made on July 4, 1776,

  87. 245 years ago,

  88. and the years of war and hardship that followed,

  89. was it all worth it in the end?

  90. Their answer would have been, unequivocally, to quote Patrick Henry,

  91. give me liberty or give me death.

  92. Without question, it was the fortitude,

  93. the resolve of those patriots

  94. that eventually led to the founding of this great nation.

  95. Indeed, that is because all things,

  96. all things in life of lasting value

  97. require great endurance.

  98. They require fortitude and resilience

  99. that comes before seeing the desired outcome.

  100. You know what that is called?

  101. The Bible calls that faith.

  102. Faith.

  103. But it is not a blind faith,

  104. as the common misconception goes.

  105. Biblical faith, friends,

  106. is not a leap into the darkness.

  107. But it is a step into the light of God's revealed will

  108. and his acts in history.

  109. And it is being swept up by that astounding story.

  110. One man who knew this perhaps better than anyone else

  111. who has ever lived on the planet

  112. was the Apostle Paul.

  113. Paul, who at one time had been Saul of Tarsus,

  114. a Pharisee, a vehement opponent,

  115. persecutor of the church,

  116. as he says in Philippians 3.

  117. It was his mission to wipe the church out from existence.

  118. And sometimes we forget that not only had Paul arrested Christians,

  119. but Paul was complicit in the murder of Christians.

  120. We know about the stoning of Stephen in Acts 7,

  121. but he says later on when he's recounting his testimony

  122. that those that were brought into Jerusalem

  123. on the charges of being traitors to the nation of Israel,

  124. Paul signed off on their execution as well.

  125. It was to this man,

  126. this man that the exalted Christ

  127. had gloriously appeared to,

  128. and he appeared to Paul

  129. to become,

  130. Paul to become Christ's chosen instrument

  131. of bringing the gospel

  132. to all of the non-Jews in the world.

  133. No matter the ethnicity,

  134. no matter the region of the known world,

  135. the Old Testament promises

  136. to the faithful descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob

  137. were now being fulfilled.

  138. The nations of the earth

  139. were indeed coming under the blessing of God

  140. through the seed of Abraham,

  141. the Lord Jesus Christ.

  142. Those who were once considered unfit

  143. and outside of the kingdom of God,

  144. God has now brought near

  145. by the blood of his son,

  146. Ephesians chapter 2.

    Ephesians 2 chapter mention

  147. In this sense,

  148. Christianity is the most inclusive religion

  149. in the world.

  150. What I mean by that

  151. is that there is no one who is forbidden.

  152. Outwardly, there is no one who is forbidden

  153. from embracing Jesus Christ.

  154. The good news of what God has done for sinners

  155. goes out to all who were here.

  156. There is no longer Jew nor Greek, Paul says.

  157. There is no longer slave nor free,

  158. male, female, Greek, barbarian, Scythian, Roman.

  159. All are one in Christ Jesus, Galatians chapter 3.

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

  160. Christianity is unique in this regard

  161. in that from beginning to end,

  162. the emphasis in Christianity is on God's work.

  163. It is on his invitation to all without discrimination.

  164. God has done this.

  165. It is his work.

  166. And he graciously calls

  167. and he applies it to whomever he freely will apply it to.

  168. This is what the Apostle Paul had given his life to.

  169. And you know what it cost him?

  170. It cost him essentially everything.

  171. In the face of intense hardship and affliction,

  172. persecution,

  173. you know the list from 2 Corinthians chapter 10

    2 Corinthians 10 chapter mention

  174. where he goes through.

  175. The Corinthians have the gall,

  176. they have the audacity to question

  177. the ministry of this man.

  178. They have the gall,

  179. the audacity to question his authority as an apostle.

  180. And Paul says there in 2 Corinthians 10,

  181. do you not know what I have been through?

  182. Do you not know about the beatings?

  183. Do you not know about the lashings?

  184. Do you not know about the stoning?

  185. Do you not know that I have been in danger from robbers,

  186. danger from my own countrymen,

  187. danger from the Gentiles,

  188. danger from robbers?

  189. I have spent a sleepless night at sea,

  190. he says there.

  191. And more than that, Paul says,

  192. you really want to know what keeps me up at night?

  193. It is not knowing where the other blow is coming from.

  194. You know what kept Paul up at night?

  195. It was his anxiety for the church.

  196. It was his anxiety for the churches that he had planted

  197. that they were going to go astray,

  198. that they were going to essentially deny the faith

  199. that had saved them.

  200. Paul gave his life for this.

  201. Finally, Roman imprisonment even,

  202. that will eventually lead to his martyrdom

  203. for the faith under the Roman Emperor Nero

  204. in the year 65 AD.

  205. Why do I share all that with you?

  206. The reason I share all that with you

  207. is because I have a question for you today.

  208. It is important to be reminded of these things

  209. by the Apostle Paul,

  210. and of course we could go on and on

  211. down through the ages

  212. of the voice of the martyrs of the faith,

  213. the suffering, the affliction

  214. that the church has undergone.

  215. It's important, brothers and sisters,

  216. to remember that,

  217. especially on this 4th of July independence in our country

  218. where we still enjoy the freedom to worship,

  219. freedom to gather in the name of Jesus Christ to worship.

  220. It's important for us to be reminded of this

  221. because eventually, eventually,

  222. the question will come for you.

  223. The question, is it worth it?

  224. Is it worth it?

  225. Christianity, the Bible, church,

  226. living as a Christian

  227. in an increasingly hostile and strange world

  228. that we live in now,

  229. strange and hostile to the teachings,

  230. to the beliefs of our faith.

  231. Is it worth it in the end?

  232. In the age of social media,

  233. it's become quite the public spectacle

  234. when a well-known professing Christian

  235. in the realm of pop Christianity

  236. renounces the faith

  237. and makes it known that they are

  238. on a process of deconstruction.

  239. That's how it's phrased in our day.

  240. That they are renouncing the faith.

  241. Perhaps we personally know someone

  242. who has walked away from the faith,

  243. and we are confronted with questions

  244. and doubts at the time,

  245. and we're wondering,

  246. is being a Christian really worth it?

  247. The tension is especially strong

  248. when social issues are brought up

  249. and the church's position

  250. seems completely out of step

  251. with the modern world.

  252. And the pressure to conform,

  253. the pressure to give in

  254. can leave us wondering,

  255. is it really worth it?

  256. Is it really worth being openly ridiculed

  257. in a college classroom?

  258. Is it worth being maligned

  259. and misrepresented at work?

  260. Is it worth being demonized

  261. and slandered about?

  262. Is it worth being rejected

  263. and feeling as though

  264. you are completely alone,

  265. you are isolated in your conviction?

  266. Is it worth it?

  267. The good news is that Scripture

  268. does not leave this most pressing question

  269. for us unanswered.

  270. As we'll see,

  271. we will all face adversary

  272. and trials in our lives as Christians.

  273. The question about the worthiness

  274. of the Christian faith

  275. is one that the New Testament

  276. wants us to be sure about.

  277. And that is why we have

  278. the testimony here

  279. of the Apostle Paul

  280. and the reason he says

  281. that he's willing to suffer.

  282. Paul's reason that he is willing to suffer,

  283. that is his answer

  284. to the question of,

  285. is it worth it

  286. when facing difficulties

  287. as a Christian?

  288. Now, little theologians,

  289. I see a few kids with us.

  290. Kids, if you want to follow along,

  291. I have an assignment for you kids,

  292. if it's okay with your parents.

  293. One assignment, kids,

  294. is to draw a picture

  295. of something you really love

  296. or value in your life.

  297. It could be your family,

  298. it could be your church family,

  299. it could be a favorite hobby

  300. or stuffed animal,

  301. something like that.

  302. And then here's the question,

  303. kids,

  304. that I want you to listen for.

  305. What does Paul say

  306. that we as Christians have

  307. that is beyond valuable?

  308. What are the riches

  309. that he says

  310. that we have, kids?

  311. Now, as I said earlier

  312. for the rest of us,

  313. the big question

  314. that we are attempting

  315. to answer today

  316. is the worthiness

  317. of our faith

  318. in the face of suffering

  319. and adversity.

  320. Is it worth it?

  321. I want you to keep

  322. that question in mind

  323. as we go

  324. and see if you can answer it

  325. the way that Paul does.

  326. First, I want you to look with me

  327. at verse 7 of Ephesians 3

  328. and the grace

  329. that was given to Paul.

  330. Of this gospel,

  331. he says,

  332. I was made a minister

  333. according to the gift

  334. of God's grace,

  335. which was given to me

  336. by the working of his power.

  337. To me,

  338. though I am the very least

  339. of all the saints,

  340. this grace was given.

  341. If you read the book

  342. of Ephesians,

  343. you'll notice

  344. that one thing

  345. that stands out

  346. about the apostle Paul

  347. is how deeply rooted

  348. his theology is

  349. in the grace of God.

  350. Understanding the gracious nature,

  351. the gift of God's favor

  352. towards him,

  353. the very least

  354. of all the saints.

  355. This was the foundation

  356. of Paul's theology.

  357. He knew that he did not deserve

  358. what he had gotten.

  359. If anything,

  360. he had gotten

  361. the exact opposite

  362. of what he deserved.

  363. And that's what grace is.

  364. Grace,

  365. we commonly hear it referred

  366. to as unmerited favor.

  367. But technically,

  368. what grace is

  369. is demerited favor.

  370. Meaning that all we have earned

  371. from God

  372. are demerits

  373. or penalties

  374. for our sinful condition.

  375. And yet,

  376. God still moves

  377. toward us

  378. and he acts

  379. on our behalf

  380. so that we can be forgiven,

  381. so that we can be loved,

  382. we can be redeemed,

  383. we can be reconciled

  384. to him.

  385. And while he's at it,

  386. God's grace

  387. begins to change us

  388. from within.

  389. It begins to change

  390. or transform

  391. our nature

  392. so that we become

  393. what we are in Christ,

  394. which is holy

  395. and blameless.

  396. Grace,

  397. church,

  398. brothers and sisters,

  399. grace is the only hope

  400. for you and I.

  401. As a matter of fact,

  402. grace is the only hope

  403. for our world.

  404. Did you know that?

  405. We see that

  406. in what Paul goes on

  407. to say

  408. about the wisdom

  409. of God

  410. being revealed

  411. in the eternal purpose

  412. or plan

  413. in Christ Jesus,

  414. our Lord.

  415. The reason that God

  416. has revealed that

  417. is what Paul says there

  418. to bring light

  419. to everyone,

  420. to bring this truth

  421. about God's grace

  422. to everyone,

  423. the plan of the mystery

  424. hidden for ages

  425. in God

  426. who created all things.

  427. So here's what we have

  428. to understand

  429. about grace.

  430. Grace not only

  431. saves us from sin,

  432. but it also saves us

  433. from futility.

  434. It saves us

  435. from deception.

  436. It saves us

  437. from nihilism

  438. and despair

  439. in terms of

  440. our outlook on life,

  441. our worldview.

  442. It is through

  443. the mystery of Christ

  444. that we come to know

  445. the true God

  446. and what His purpose

  447. and His plan

  448. is for the ages

  449. and that He has

  450. included us

  451. in that plan.

  452. You know,

  453. it's quite telling.

  454. It's quite telling

  455. about our society.

  456. Whereas,

  457. as a society,

  458. we've never been

  459. more affluent.

  460. We've never had

  461. more technology

  462. and capabilities

  463. at our fingertips.

  464. We've never had

  465. more freedom

  466. and pleasure.

  467. And yet,

  468. the percentage

  469. of adults

  470. identifying as lonely

  471. has never been higher

  472. in the history

  473. of our country.

  474. Did you know that?

  475. Over 50%

  476. of adults

  477. between ages

  478. 18 and 49

  479. identify as being lonely.

  480. The number

  481. of prescriptions

  482. for anxiety-related

  483. stresses

  484. has also never been higher.

  485. They estimate

  486. one out of

  487. every three Americans

  488. are on medication

  489. for anxiety.

  490. Even in the age

  491. of social media,

  492. where it would seem,

  493. at least on the surface,

  494. that connecting

  495. and socializing

  496. are part of the purpose

  497. of being plugged in,

  498. studies have actually

  499. shown the opposite.

  500. That the more time

  501. you spend

  502. on social media,

  503. the more unhappy

  504. you are, actually.

  505. In her book,

  506. The Happiness Effect,

  507. how social media

  508. is driving a generation

  509. to appear perfect

  510. at any cost,

  511. author Donna Freitas,

  512. she writes,

  513. she writes this,

  514. that while sexting,

  515. cyberbullying,

  516. and narcissism

  517. are very real

  518. and present threats online,

  519. she says that

  520. the overall

  521. greatest danger

  522. for young people

  523. is that they always

  524. have to appear happy.

  525. Here's what she writes,

  526. quote,

  527. young people face

  528. enormous pressure

  529. to appear

  530. to look perfect online,

  531. not just happy,

  532. but blissful,

  533. ecstatic,

  534. and fabulously successful.

  535. Unable to achieve

  536. this impossible standard,

  537. they are anxious

  538. about letting

  539. the less-than-perfect

  540. parts of themselves

  541. become public knowledge.

  542. Far from wanting

  543. to share everything,

  544. they are brutally selective

  545. when it comes to curating

  546. their personal profiles

  547. and worry obsessively

  548. that they might unwittingly

  549. post something

  550. that could come back

  551. to haunt them

  552. the rest of their lives.

  553. That is the current state

  554. of our culture.

  555. And over against this,

  556. friends,

  557. stands the mystery

  558. of Jesus Christ.

  559. The mystery of Christ

  560. as the watershed moment

  561. of human history

  562. and the universe.

  563. This mystery,

  564. this mystery,

  565. mystery there meaning

  566. that unless God

  567. revealing it to us,

  568. unless God revealing

  569. the meaning of the incarnation,

  570. the purpose of the incarnation,

  571. it would remain hidden to us.

  572. This mystery has been revealed

  573. to you, church.

  574. It has been revealed,

  575. the purpose,

  576. the plan in Jesus Christ.

  577. It is so that you would be filled

  578. with the grace and truth

  579. that are found

  580. in Jesus Christ.

  581. And what we must see,

  582. brothers and sisters,

  583. is that this grace,

  584. this truth,

  585. you know what they are?

  586. They are the sure footing

  587. in a world of uncertainty

  588. and speculation,

  589. in a world of suffering

  590. and turmoil,

  591. of death and despair,

  592. of injustice and oppression,

  593. of war and tyranny,

  594. the grace,

  595. the knowledge revealed

  596. in Jesus Christ

  597. that penetrates

  598. the hopelessness

  599. of nihilism

  600. that our culture

  601. cannot escape from.

  602. It radiates the purpose

  603. and the end

  604. for which everything exists,

  605. the glory of the triune God.

  606. This mystery stands beneath

  607. as the foundation

  608. of our society,

  609. of America itself.

  610. It stands as the foundation

  611. of the modern world.

  612. Because it gave

  613. the modern world

  614. the preconditions

  615. that are necessary

  616. for you and I

  617. making sense of anything.

  618. It stands above

  619. as the transcendent authority

  620. that post-modernism

  621. and moral relativism,

  622. again,

  623. these are the philosophies

  624. of our culture,

  625. of our day and age.

  626. They cannot escape

  627. from the inconsistency

  628. and the contradictions

  629. that they are.

  630. But Christianity

  631. stands above

  632. and gives transcendent meaning

  633. to everything, friends.

  634. These are the most common

  635. secular worldviews

  636. that are raised up

  637. against the knowledge

  638. of Christ and His gospel.

  639. And they are everywhere

  640. in our day and age,

  641. from pop culture references

  642. and TV, film, music,

  643. to our current state

  644. of politics

  645. and the university classrooms,

  646. to the forementioned

  647. social media platforms.

  648. The point that I'm making

  649. is that we are confronted

  650. with these destructive

  651. belief systems

  652. and they have direct consequences

  653. for how people think

  654. and live.

  655. And that leaves us

  656. as a society

  657. ultimately without God

  658. and without hope.

  659. The Christian worldview,

  660. however,

  661. as here described by Paul,

  662. leaves us with boldness

  663. and access

  664. to God directly.

  665. And we see how it provides

  666. a certain confidence

  667. in the midst of suffering

  668. that he mentions

  669. at the end of verse 12

  670. and verse 13.

  671. He says there,

  672. so I ask you

  673. not to lose heart

  674. over what I am suffering

  675. for you,

  676. which is your glory.

  677. Why, Paul?

  678. Why should the Ephesian church

  679. not lose heart?

  680. How can you say that?

  681. As he says in verse 1,

  682. you're in prison.

  683. He is a prisoner.

  684. And he is unjustly in prison,

  685. we might add.

  686. Why shouldn't they lose heart?

  687. And why shouldn't we here

  688. in 2021

  689. not lose heart?

  690. What is the basis

  691. for so bold a claim?

  692. How do we know

  693. that everything

  694. you have been through,

  695. Paul,

  696. for the sake of the gospel

  697. is worth it?

  698. His answer is in verse 8

  699. and following.

  700. His answer is in verse 8

  701. and following.

  702. In spite of his unworthiness,

  703. Paul was declared worthy

  704. by grace.

  705. And it's the same

  706. for you and I today.

  707. Even though we may feel unworthy,

  708. we are declared worthy.

  709. Even though we may be plagued

  710. with guilt and shame,

  711. his mercy is more

  712. and his grace covers us.

  713. His spirit makes us alive

  714. and unites us to Jesus.

  715. And you know how it comes

  716. to you and I.

  717. It all comes to us

  718. through the unsearchable riches

  719. of Jesus.

  720. It comes to us

  721. through union

  722. with Christ.

  723. Our identity,

  724. our identity

  725. is not found

  726. out there.

  727. Our identity

  728. is found

  729. in Jesus Christ.

  730. We are holy

  731. and blameless

  732. in him.

  733. Our comfort,

  734. our comfort,

  735. what did we confess

  736. earlier?

  737. That we belong

  738. body and soul

  739. in life

  740. and in death

  741. to our faithful savior,

  742. Jesus Christ,

  743. who has paid

  744. for our salvation

  745. with his precious blood.

  746. God,

  747. our hope,

  748. our destiny,

  749. all of these

  750. are the questions

  751. that the world

  752. is searching

  753. for answers to.

  754. Christ,

  755. Christ in us,

  756. he is the hope

  757. of glory,

  758. the promise

  759. of future glory.

  760. Our destiny,

  761. it's the unsearchable riches

  762. of Jesus Christ,

  763. friends,

  764. so that in the coming ages,

  765. as Paul says

  766. in chapter 2,

  767. God might show

  768. you and I

  769. the immeasurable riches

  770. of his kindness

  771. toward us

  772. in Jesus Christ.

  773. There is no one

  774. like Jesus.

  775. There is no one

  776. like this God,

  777. friends.

  778. Paul says in verse 8,

  779. to me,

  780. this grace was given

  781. to the Gentiles

  782. to preach

  783. the unsearchable riches

  784. of Christ.

  785. The word translated

  786. unsearchable

  787. means unfathomable,

  788. incomprehensible,

  789. meaning that it is

  790. something so inscrutable

  791. and infinite

  792. that you cannot

  793. possibly fully understand

  794. or exhaust its meaning.

  795. The image is of one

  796. trying to track something

  797. back to its source

  798. but cannot be found.

  799. Another commentator said

  800. that the picture

  801. is that of a reservoir

  802. that is so deep

  803. that you cannot reach

  804. the bottom of it.

  805. Therefore,

  806. there's no limit

  807. that can be placed upon it.

  808. Brothers and sisters,

  809. church,

  810. we have these riches.

  811. You and I

  812. have these riches,

  813. these unfathomable,

  814. unsearchable riches

  815. in Jesus.

  816. And it's so that

  817. in the coming ages

  818. he might show

  819. the immeasurable riches

  820. of his grace toward us

  821. and kindness

  822. in Jesus Christ.

  823. Paul is saying

  824. that not only

  825. is our future

  826. defined by these

  827. unsearchable riches,

  828. but our present

  829. is also defined

  830. by them.

  831. Because Christianity,

  832. friends,

  833. it's not about escapism.

  834. It's not about

  835. retreating

  836. and living in a cave

  837. until that day arrives.

  838. No,

  839. Paul's whole

  840. preaching ministry,

  841. indeed,

  842. every minister

  843. who is faithful

  844. to that tradition,

  845. to the apostolic tradition

  846. in the New Testament,

  847. our preaching ministry

  848. for you

  849. is that you would know

  850. these unsearchable riches.

  851. You would know them.

  852. They are yours.

  853. They are yours

  854. here and now

  855. to face,

  856. to face

  857. the certain suffering

  858. that you will undergo

  859. in this life.

  860. The pain

  861. and the sorrow

  862. that will all come upon us

  863. at some point.

  864. The loneliness

  865. and the despair,

  866. the anxiety

  867. that fills our hearts

  868. and lives.

  869. Consider these

  870. unsearchable riches

  871. that are yours.

  872. That your heavenly Father

  873. has graciously provided

  874. for you.

  875. That your blessed,

  876. one of a kind,

  877. faithful,

  878. and merciful

  879. high priest,

  880. his ministry

  881. through the word

  882. every Lord's day,

  883. he proclaims

  884. these riches to you.

  885. That your patient

  886. and preserving Holy Spirit

  887. reminds you of

  888. and lifts your hearts

  889. to heaven

  890. even if it is just

  891. for a moment

  892. because of the spiritual struggle

  893. that you are facing

  894. and that I face.

  895. Consider these

  896. unfathomable riches

  897. now.

  898. Because of the Father,

  899. you are in Christ Jesus

  900. who became for us

  901. wisdom from God,

  902. righteousness,

  903. sanctification,

  904. and redemption

  905. so that it is written,

  906. let him who boasts

  907. boast in the Lord.

  908. Christ is our wisdom.

  909. He is our wisdom

  910. as opposed

  911. to the world's

  912. futile speculation

  913. and their leap of faith

  914. into the unknown.

  915. Christ is our righteousness

  916. as opposed

  917. to the unrighteousness

  918. and the ungodliness

  919. that lies

  920. not only out there

  921. but also lies in here.

  922. He is our sanctification.

  923. In comparison

  924. with our perversion

  925. and our uncleanness,

  926. Jesus makes us clean

  927. rather than us

  928. making him unclean.

  929. He is our redemption.

  930. He is the remedy

  931. to slavery,

  932. to sin,

  933. to bondage,

  934. to sin and unbelief.

  935. Christ is our knowledge,

  936. the answer

  937. to our ignorance

  938. about the nature

  939. of who God is

  940. and what he is like.

  941. He is our peace.

  942. He is our sufficiency.

  943. He is the answer

  944. to the old song,

  945. I can't get no satisfaction.

  946. Jesus is our peace.

  947. Jesus is our sufficiency.

  948. He is our reconciliation

  949. that stands in contrast

  950. to our propensity

  951. for conflict and division.

  952. For sin,

  953. he is our high priest

  954. that alone stands

  955. between us and God.

  956. He is able to save us

  957. to the uttermost

  958. because he alone

  959. atones for sin.

  960. For authority,

  961. Jesus is our prophet

  962. who is the final revelation

  963. from God,

  964. Hebrews chapter 1.

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  965. For politics

  966. and social issues,

  967. he is our king

  968. that stands above

  969. our corruption

  970. and our hypocrisy.

  971. In every conceivable way,

  972. friends,

  973. Jesus answers the dilemma

  974. of human suffering,

  975. of human corruption,

  976. of human injustice,

  977. of human weakness.

  978. We live in a dog-eat-dog world,

  979. a world that is defined

  980. by strength,

  981. not weakness,

  982. pride,

  983. not humility,

  984. power,

  985. and privilege,

  986. not service,

  987. and self-sacrifice.

  988. Only the strong survive,

  989. they tell us.

  990. Look out only for you

  991. because you're the only one

  992. who will.

  993. You must perform

  994. and you must perform well.

  995. Don't let them see you struggling.

  996. Otherwise,

  997. they will take advantage of you

  998. and they will exploit you

  999. while doing so.

  1000. If you don't perform,

  1001. you're out,

  1002. fired,

  1003. let go,

  1004. unfriended,

  1005. canceled.

1006. The gospel that the world

  1007. has to offer,

  1008. friends,

  1009. really isn't gospel.

  1010. It's law.

  1011. Perform or else.

1012. Agree with us or else.

1013. Be on the right side or else.

1014. Vote this way or else.

1015. Believe the right way or else.

1016. On and on it goes.

  1017. The never-ending cycle

  1018. of law-keeping

  1019. and gracelessness,

  1020. it's a world without God

  1021. and without hope,

  1022. friends.

  1023. But this gospel,

  1024. this gospel,

  1025. little theologians,

  1026. this book,

  1027. this God,

  1028. this Father,

  1029. Paul says,

  1030. he has brought

  1031. the ministry

  1032. of the apostles

  1033. for the purpose

1034. to preach to you and I

  1035. these unsearchable riches.

  1036. So as a testimony

  1037. to the rulers

  1038. and authorities

  1039. and the heavenly places,

  1040. it has cosmic,

  1041. cosmic ramifications.

1042. What we're doing right now,

  1043. cosmic ramifications.

  1044. That's ultimately

  1045. the purpose,

  1046. the reason

  1047. undergirding Paul's ministry

  1048. and the church's ministry,

  1049. friends.

1050. What you are doing here

1051. week in and week out,

  1052. it is to preach

  1053. the unsearchable riches

  1054. of Jesus Christ.

1055. It is to bring to light

  1056. to everyone

  1057. what God has done.

1058. The plan for the ages,

1059. the God who created all things,

  1060. he is redeeming

  1061. and he is reconciling

  1062. all things to himself.

1063. And this is what the church

  1064. is to testify to.

1065. We are to testify to it.

  1066. The church's faithful ministry

  1067. in proclaiming these riches

  1068. in Jesus,

1069. which God has now revealed

  1070. for the world.

1071. It testifies to the wisdom

  1072. of God's plan.

  1073. And incredibly,

1074. the ministry of Paul then

  1075. and the continued ministry

  1076. of the church

  1077. in preaching this gospel,

  1078. these unsearchable riches

1079. that are part of the eternal purpose

  1080. and plan of God,

1081. it all comes down to,

  1082. back to that question,

  1083. is it worth it?

  1084. Is it worth it?

  1085. Is the value

1086. of the Christian faith worth it?

  1087. Paul's answer,

  1088. you better believe it.

  1089. Don't lose heart

1090. over what I am suffering for you,

  1091. which is your glory.

1092. I am suffering on behalf of you.

1093. I am the prisoner for the Lord.

  1094. And I do it

  1095. to bring to you

  1096. the unsearchable,

  1097. the unfathomable riches

1098. of the gospel of grace

  1099. in Jesus Christ.

  1100. In the end, friends,

1101. it really does boil down to this.

  1102. Christ

  1103. or chaos?

1104. Which one are you going to choose?

1105. So that when dearest friends depart

  1106. and all is darkened

1107. in a veil of tears,

1108. then you shall better know

  1109. his love,

  1110. his heart,

  1111. who come to soothe

1112. your sorrow and your fears.

  1113. Be still, my soul.

  1114. Your Jesus can repay

  1115. from his fullness

1116. all that he takes away.

  1117. Be still, my soul.

1118. The hour is hastening on

  1119. when we shall forever

  1120. be with the Lord,

  1121. when disappointment,

1122. grief, and fear are gone.

  1123. Sorrow for God

  1124. loves purest joys restored.

  1125. Be still, my soul,

1126. when change and tears are past.

  1127. All is safe

  1128. and blessed

1129. we shall meet at last.

  1130. This Jesus,

1131. he is offered to you

  1132. today.

  1133. These riches

  1134. are offered to you

  1135. today.

  1136. Let's pray.

  1137. Lord,

  1138. we thank you.

1139. We thank you for the

  1140. unsearchable riches

  1141. of your son

  1142. that every question

  1143. that we might have,

  1144. every dilemma

  1145. that we have caused,

  1146. he is the answer.

  1147. Lord,

  1148. we love you

1149. and we love your son

  1150. and we thank you

1151. for all that you have

1152. done for us in him.

  1153. And we pray

  1154. that you would,

  1155. Lord,

  1156. you would calm

  1157. our fears,

  1158. you would calm

  1159. our anxiety,

  1160. our worry

1161. as we look around us.

  1162. Lord,

  1163. maybe there are

  1164. perhaps marriages

  1165. in this room

  1166. that are struggling.

  1167. There are kids

  1168. in this room

  1169. who are struggling.

  1170. Lord,

  1171. you know us

  1172. better than we know

  1173. ourselves

  1174. and you still

  1175. call us,

1176. you call us by faith

  1177. to embrace

  1178. what you have done

  1179. for us.

1180. I pray that that would be

  1181. a source of comfort,

  1182. a source of encouragement

  1183. for all of us

  1184. in this room.

  1185. Lord,

  1186. that we would go

  1187. forth from here

  1188. ever more

  1189. convinced

  1190. and confident

  1191. of the riches

  1192. we have in you.

1193. And it's in your son

  1194. we pray.

  1195. Amen.

  1196. Amen.
