  1. My name is Matthew Capone and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church

  2. and it's my joy to bring God's Word to you this morning.

  3. A special welcome if you're new or visiting with us.

  4. We're glad that you're here and we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats

  5. but because we're following Jesus together as one community

  6. and as we follow Jesus together we become convinced that there's no one so good.

  7. They don't need God's grace and no one so bad that they can't have it

  8. which is why we come back week after week Sunday after Sunday to hear what God has to say to us in His Word.

  9. We're starting this morning a new series in the Gospel of Mark.

  10. In the Gospel of Mark as all the Gospels simply tells the story of Jesus.

  11. It's the story of His life and His death and His resurrection.

  12. And we talk about Jesus. We are not talking about an abstraction or an idea or a construct

  13. but at risk of saying the obvious we are talking about a historical real man.

  14. We are talking about someone who was born in the first century in Bethlehem.

  15. Bethlehem was five or six miles south of Jerusalem.

  16. And we're also talking about someone who grew up in Nazareth

  17. which is 64 or 65 miles north of Jerusalem.

  18. And I mention that to remind us all, while it may seem clear,

  19. Jesus takes on all kinds of different ideas from all kinds of different people.

  20. We are talking about a real man who lived in real time and real space.

  21. And as we come to this book, the Gospel of Mark asks two simple questions

  22. that we're going to be asking as we go through it.

  23. And it's going to be our questions this morning which are simply this.

  24. Who is Jesus and how do we respond to Him?

  25. Who is Jesus and how do we respond to Him?

  26. Now that second question, you could rephrase it.

  27. If you don't consider yourself a Christian,

  28. maybe you're not interested in responding to Jesus.

  29. You could ask it a different way.

  30. Why would you follow Jesus?

  31. Okay, so how do you respond to Him or why would you follow Him?

  32. And I use that word because Jesus does.

  33. He invites people later in the Gospel of Mark to follow after Him.

  34. And so we're going to jump right in.

  35. Mark's known for repeating over and over the word immediately

  36. because he moves quickly from scene to scene.

  37. This is in fact the shortest of all the Gospels.

  38. And so in answering those questions this morning,

  39. we're going to see two things.

  40. First of all, the Savior.

  41. And second of all, the sick.

  42. We're going to see the Savior and the sick.

  43. And so it's with that I invite you to turn with me now

  44. to the beginning of the Gospel of Mark.

  45. You can turn in your Bible.

  46. You can turn in your worship guide.

  47. You can turn on your phone.

  48. No matter where you turn, remember that this is God's word.

  49. God tells us that His word is a lamp to our feet

  50. and a light to our path.

  51. In other words, God has not left us to stumble alone in the dark.

  52. But instead, He has given us His word to show us the way to go.

  53. And so that's why we read now, starting at Mark 1, verse 1.

    Mark 1:1

  54. The beginning of the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

  55. As it is written in Isaiah the prophet,

  56. Behold, I send my messenger before your face,

  57. who will prepare your way.

  58. The voice of one crying in the wilderness.

  59. Prepare the way of the Lord.

  60. Make His paths straight.

  61. John appeared, baptizing in the wilderness

  62. and proclaiming a baptism of repentance

  63. for the forgiveness of sins.

  64. And all the country of Judea and all Jerusalem

  65. were going out to him

  66. and were being baptized by him in the river Jordan,

  67. confessing their sins.

  68. Now John was clothed with camel's hair

  69. and wore a leather belt around his waist

  70. and ate locusts and wild honey.

  71. And he preached, saying,

  72. After me comes he who is mightier than I,

  73. the strap of whose sandals I am not worthy to stoop down and untie.

  74. I have baptized you with water,

  75. but he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit.

  76. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's Word.

  77. Our Father in heaven, we praise you again

  78. that you have not left us alone as orphans in a merciless universe,

  79. but instead you speak to us,

  80. and you speak to us clearly in words that we can understand.

  81. We ask that you would do that this morning by your Holy Spirit,

  82. that you would open our minds and eyes and heart,

  83. that we would be able to see Jesus in this passage,

  84. that you would cast a spotlight on him,

  85. that he would be more beautiful than we expected or realized,

  86. and that you would shape us and change us as a result of it.

  87. We thank you that we haven't earned these things or deserved them,

  88. but instead we simply ask them in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

  89. Amen.

  90. If you have seen Star Wars Episode I, The Phantom Menace,

  91. you know that getting into the film,

  92. maybe in the middle or maybe three quarters of the way through,

  93. you get to see this meeting of the Jedi Council.

  94. And Qui-Gon Jinn is coming before the Council to speak to them,

  95. and we find out during this meeting

  96. that there's been this prophecy from old times during the Jedi

  97. that there's going to be a chosen one who's supposed to come.

  98. And this chosen one is supposed to balance light and dark.

  99. He's going to balance the Force, and he's going to end the Sith.

  100. He's going to balance what has not been balanced before.

  101. And what Qui-Gon Jinn is convinced of that the Council is not

  102. is that young Anakin is the one that they've been looking forward to.

  103. He is the one who's going to balance light and dark.

  104. He's the one who's going to bring the Sith to an end.

  105. And he has reasons for believing this.

  106. Qui-Gon Jinn doesn't just make this up.

  107. He interacts with Anakin.

  108. He realizes that he's especially strong in the Force.

  109. In fact, remember the scene where they measure the midichlorians in his blood,

  110. and they're shocked to find out he has 20,000, over 20,000 midichlorians.

  111. And as he says, even Master Yoda doesn't have a midichlorian count that high.

  112. It's not just his midichlorian count, though.

  113. Remember when Anakin is sort of flirting with Padme, he tells her he's the only human being

  114. who can compete in pod racing.

  115. We find out that's because of his skill in the Force.

  116. And finally, when Qui-Gon Jinn is trying to convince the Council that this is the Chosen One,

  117. he tells them, look, I sense a convergence in the Force.

  118. In other words, there's a centrality of the Force around this individual that's not there with others.

  119. There's this high concentration of energy.

  120. And so Qui-Gon Jinn is trying to convince them.

  121. He's insisting this is the Chosen One, despite the skepticism of those in the room.

  122. Now, you might wonder why I'm bringing up Star Wars in the midst of the beginning of the Gospel of Mark.

  123. And the reason is this.

  124. There's a connection in this story.

  125. Qui-Gon Jinn is trying to say there's a connection between what we have been expecting

  126. and looking for in the past and what is now in front of us in the future.

  127. We've been anticipating this.

  128. I think it's now here in front of us.

  129. He's the one we have been waiting for.

  130. Mark here with John the Baptist is making the same point.

  131. There is a prophecy being fulfilled.

  132. Now, don't carry this too far, right?

  133. Star Wars is filled with Eastern religion.

  134. We're talking about Christianity.

  135. But he's saying there's this thing that we've been looking towards for years

  136. that has been prophesied that is now before us right here and right now.

  137. We see this first of all, verses 2 and 3.

  138. He quotes the prophet Isaiah.

  139. He's actually quoting Isaiah and Malachi here.

  140. Typically, in the New Testament, when someone quotes an Old Testament prophet,

  141. they only mention one of them, even if they're quoting multiples.

  142. And he's saying this prophecy, by the way, it's just about God returning to his people

  143. after the exile.

  144. God giving his people his presence once again and bringing his salvation fully and finally.

  145. This prophecy from Isaiah and Malachi is being fulfilled right now.

  146. The thing that you've been waiting for, the thing that you've been longing for,

  147. the fact that you've never been fully restored since your exile in Babylon,

  148. God's presence, which never returned to the temple, it is finally here.

  149. The prophecy is being fulfilled.

  150. This is the one we've been looking for.

  151. And we find here a specific portion of this prophecy that we're pointed to.

  152. It's not just that God is returning finally with his presence to his people,

  153. but we know from these prophecies that there's meant to be a messenger

  154. who comes to prepare the way.

  155. That's the point made in Isaiah chapter 40, verse 3.

    Isaiah 40:3

  156. And Malachi put together as part of what we read earlier this morning.

  157. And he is telling us here this messenger that's meant to prepare the way for God

  158. is in fact John the Baptist.

  159. That's why we find out in verse 4, we're told John appeared

  160. immediately after we're told that this prophecy has come.

  161. John is coming as the one who's meant to prepare the way.

  162. He's the messenger that the Old Testament predicted,

  163. and so God's salvation is almost here.

  164. It's right around the corner.

  165. His messenger has shown up to announce and proclaim his presence.

  166. He tells us more just in the fact that John has appeared, though.

  167. We'll come back to this repentance for the forgiveness of sins,

  168. but we find out John's location.

  169. By the way, in Malachi chapter 4, verse 5,

    Malachi 4:5

  170. we're told that this messenger who's preparing the way for God

  171. is going to be Elijah again.

  172. Remember Elijah, an Old Testament prophet.

  173. He's been long dead at this point since the beginning of the Gospel of Mark,

  174. and yet Elijah's the one they're looking for to appear again,

  175. and that's what he's getting at over and over in these verses.

  176. So first of all, John appears.

  177. We have to trust him that John's supposed to be Elijah

  178. because he's coming right after the fulfillment of the prophecy,

  179. but he gives us reasons to believe.

  180. It's not just that Qui-Gon Jinn believes that Anakin's the chosen one,

  181. but he has the midichlorian count to back him up.

  182. He has his power in podracing to back him up.

  183. John also brings his evidence here.

  184. He is appearing in the wilderness,

  185. the same place where Elijah disappeared.

  186. So he's reappearing the last place Elijah was seen.

  187. He's also wearing clothes here.

  188. Verse 6, camel's hair and a leather belt.

  189. That is meant to remind us of Elijah.

  190. Not only is he appearing in Elijah's place,

  191. he looks like Elijah.

  192. And he's coming here, giving us what we've been looking for forever.

  193. We've been looking for the promised return of God.

  194. And so this appearance of John the Baptist is meant to build our excitement up,

  195. our anticipation that God's return,

  196. which has been waited for for centuries, is finally coming.

  197. We find out about another prophecy fulfilled too.

  198. It's not just that John is coming here,

  199. but John is coming to prepare the way, right, for the Lord.

  200. Lord, this one who is coming, verse 8,

  201. is going to baptize you with the Holy Spirit.

  202. This comes as a fulfillment of prophecies in the books of Isaiah and Ezekiel

  203. that talk a lot about the day when God is going to come

  204. and finally pour out his Spirit on his people.

  205. And so it's not just that God's presence is coming,

  206. but his power is coming as well.

  207. When we think about the Holy Spirit in the Bible,

  208. there's all kinds of things we could talk about,

  209. but the Holy Spirit comes bringing God's power to change hearts and lives.

  210. That's what these prophecies in the Old Testament talk about.

  211. And so this one, baptizing with the Holy Spirit,

  212. is coming and going to bring that power finally

  213. that they've been longing for and looking for

  214. that's been promised for centuries in the prophets.

  215. The Holy Spirit is going to be able to change hearts and minds.

  216. It's the Holy Spirit that allows us,

  217. that causes us to finally be able to admit that we're wrong.

  218. It's the Holy Spirit we find out in the New Testament

  219. that helps us to understand the truths about God

  220. that we would not be able to understand on our own.

  221. It's the Holy Spirit that changes our affections and our loves.

  222. The Spirit has power.

  223. In other words,

  224. this God is going to come and save his world,

  225. and he has the power to do it.

  226. This great and powerful presence

  227. that we've been waiting for for so long

  228. is finally here.

  229. Now I'm going to pause for a second

  230. just to explain to you all the difference

  231. between baptizing with water

  232. and baptizing with the Holy Spirit

  233. might seem strange

  234. because water and the Holy Spirit

  235. don't seem like opposites,

  236. and it might also be strange

  237. because there's all kinds of people

  238. who have all kinds of theories and thoughts

  239. about what's meant here,

  240. and I want you to think about it simply in this way.

  241. The difference between baptism in water

  242. and baptism with the Holy Spirit

  243. is the difference between the nurse and the doctor.

  244. Now if you go and you visit your doctor,

  245. you go to the doctor's office,

  246. which I know doesn't happen quite as often anymore.

  247. People are just texting their doctors

  248. or doing telehealth,

  249. but if you actually show up to the office in person,

  250. what's going to happen first?

  251. Well, you're going to get checked in

  252. by the receptionist, right?

  253. Then you get called back to the room.

  254. When you're in the room,

  255. the nurse is going to come in and talk to you,

  256. and what's he going to say?

  257. He's going to ask you,

  258. what's wrong with you?

  259. Why are you here to see the doctor?

  260. Now I always find that to be a silly question

  261. because I never set up doctor's appointments

  262. without already telling them why I'm there,

  263. but for some reason,

  264. we have to go through this charade

  265. where they ask me why I'm there,

  266. so I tell them.

  267. I am admitting in that moment

  268. that I have a need, right?

  269. I am saying, I need help.

  270. Here's why I'm here.

  271. This nurse is helping me to admit that need.

  272. And the nurse can't help me, right?

  273. The nurse does not have the power to prescribe.

  274. The nurse is not there to diagnose.

  275. We might say the nurse is there

  276. to prepare the way for the doctor.

  277. And so it's important.

  278. I have to admit my need,

  279. but my need's not going to be solved by that.

  280. What I need, what I'm waiting for

  281. is the doctor to show up.

  282. And what's going to happen?

  283. Well, after my temperature has been taken

  284. and I've been weighed

  285. and I've admitted my problem,

  286. the doctor is going to show up.

  287. She is the one who is going to be able

  288. to prescribe and administer and diagnose.

  289. She is the one who actually has the power

  290. to make things right again.

  291. That is what we're talking about here

  292. when we look at the difference

  293. between baptism with water

  294. and baptism with the Holy Spirit.

  295. John is preparing the way for Jesus.

  296. He is getting the patients ready,

  297. admitting their need,

  298. knowing that they need someone greater

  299. and more powerful

  300. who can bring the Spirit to change them.

  301. And so they're ready

  302. when the doctor shows up.

  303. He is getting them ready

  304. so that Jesus can come

  305. and actually bring real healing

  306. and power and transformation.

  307. And so the point is this,

  308. that we look at the very beginning

  309. of the Gospel of Mark.

  310. The world is sick

  311. and the one who can save it

  312. and heal it is finally here.

  313. The world is sick

  314. and the one who can save it

  315. and heal it is finally here.

  316. Help is on the way.

  317. This is not a drill.

  318. That's how Mark begins his Gospel.

  319. And so you'll remember

  320. I had two questions.

  321. Who is Jesus?

  322. How do we respond to him?

  323. First of all, who is Jesus?

  324. We learn here,

  325. he is not just a man.

  326. He's also God.

  327. These Old Testament passages

  328. speak of God's return,

  329. his presence.

  330. Jesus is the one fulfilling that return.

  331. He is not just a good teacher,

  332. although he does have good teachings.

  333. He is divine.

  334. He is fulfilling

  335. the Old Testament prophecies

  336. even if it's not in the way

  337. you might expect.

  338. Not only is he not just a man,

  339. but God,

  340. he also is coming

  341. with real and true power.

  342. He is coming to provide

  343. the baptism of the Holy Spirit.

  344. He's going to use that power

  345. to actually save us.

  346. A few weeks ago,

  347. I referenced Charlie Brown,

  348. which if you're old like me,

  349. you'll remember.

  350. Remember Lucy always has her booth.

  351. It says psychiatric help,

  352. five cents,

  353. and she has this sign

  354. that says the doctor is in.

  355. Mark is telling us,

  356. finally,

  357. after centuries of waiting,

  358. the doctor is in.

  359. He is here to save the world.

  360. He's going to be the one

  361. who comes and brings to an end

  362. all shame and sin

  363. and disease and death

  364. and alienation and wars.

  365. And it's important that we see this

  366. at the very beginning.

  367. Mark's giving us an introduction here

  368. to lay the groundwork

  369. because Jesus' power,

  370. that kind of power,

  371. we're going to see at work

  372. throughout the rest of the gospel.

  373. And so keep this introduction in mind

  374. as we see Jesus' healings

  375. and his teachings

  376. and his miracles.

  377. He is a God.

  378. He is the God.

  379. He is God

  380. coming with true and real power

  381. to heal this world.

  382. And so that's our first answer

  383. in the gospel of Mark

  384. to who Jesus is.

  385. We'll see more answers

  386. as we continue.

  387. Mark, though,

  388. is calling us

  389. not just to look at Jesus

  390. but also for a response.

  391. If the doctor is here,

  392. then what?

  393. Well, we see in verses 2 and 3

  394. that there's meant to be

  395. a preparation here.

  396. I will send my messenger

  397. who will prepare the way

  398. and then there's going to be

  399. the voice of one

  400. crying in the wilderness,

  401. prepare the way of the Lord.

  402. And then we find out

  403. in verse 4

  404. what this preparation looks like.

  405. John appeared,

  406. baptizing in the wilderness

  407. and proclaiming a baptism

  408. of repentance

  409. for the forgiveness of sins.

  410. Now, baptism is this water cleansing

  411. as we know

  412. that represents

  413. God cleansing us

  414. from the dirt of sin.

  415. We find out here

  416. that John's giving a baptism here

  417. that requires repentance.

  418. He is requiring people

  419. to admit and confess

  420. that they are sinners

  421. in need of help,

  422. that they need God's mercy

  423. and without it

  424. they deserve only

  425. his judgment.

  426. And so that simply is

  427. how John the Baptist

  428. is preparing the way.

  429. It goes back to my

  430. illustration earlier.

  431. John is the nurse

  432. getting people in the rooms.

  433. He's getting them ready.

  434. They've already admitted

  435. that they have need.

  436. They've already told

  437. this person

  438. that they're sick.

  439. That is his preparation

  440. for Jesus

  441. so that when Jesus shows up

  442. they are waiting

  443. and ready.

  444. In fact, Jesus is going

  445. to tell us later

  446. in the Gospel of Mark

  447. in chapter 2

  448. that he is coming

  449. as a physician.

  450. He says,

  451. those who are well

  452. have no need

  453. of a physician

  454. but those who are sick.

  455. I came not to call

  456. the righteous

  457. but sinners.

  458. So Jesus is coming

  459. only for those

  460. who are willing

  461. to admit

  462. and confess

  463. their need.

  464. And there's a challenge

  465. here in John's baptism

  466. because typically

  467. baptism at this point

  468. in history

  469. in biblical history

  470. was only for those

  471. who were non-Jews

  472. becoming Jews.

  473. And yet John here

  474. is requiring it

  475. of Jews as well.

  476. In other words,

  477. he's saying

  478. your pedigree,

  479. your religious background

  480. doesn't matter.

  481. I don't care

  482. if you're a Jew or not.

  483. I care if you are able

  484. to admit your need.

  485. On top of that,

  486. baptism at this time

  487. was typically

  488. self-administered.

  489. It was done

  490. by the person

  491. being baptized.

  492. John, however,

  493. is the one

  494. performing the baptism, right?

  495. They're being baptized

  496. by John

  497. and so he's telling them

  498. not only do you have

  499. to admit your need,

  500. not only do I not care

  501. about your background,

  502. you can't help yourself.

  503. You need something

  504. outside of you

  505. to cleanse you

  506. and save you.

  507. And so the question

  508. for us,

  509. brothers and sisters,

  510. is how do we respond?

  511. How are we preparing

  512. the way for Jesus?

  513. How are we prepared

  514. for him to come

  515. and heal?

  516. And the answer

  517. is simple.

  518. We also have to admit

  519. our mess.

  520. We can't find healing

  521. unless we're willing

  522. to admit where we need it.

  523. Imagine how ridiculous

  524. it would be

  525. if I showed up

  526. to the doctor's office,

  527. the nurse comes in,

  528. she asked me,

  529. why are you here

  530. to see the doctor?

  531. And I said,

  532. honestly,

  533. it's been a long time

  534. since I've seen him

  535. and I just really

  536. wanted to catch up.

  537. You know,

  538. I don't know

  539. what his kids are up to.

  540. Are they still playing baseball?

  541. Have they shifted

  542. to volleyball?

  543. I mean,

  544. I have questions.

  545. What would the nurse do?

  546. I probably wouldn't

  547. know what to do.

  548. You're at the doctor's office.

  549. Okay,

  550. why are you here?

  551. What do you need?

  552. If you want to be healed,

  553. if you want him

  554. to help you,

  555. you have to be honest

  556. and upfront.

  557. And so,

  558. as we are coming

  559. to the gospel

  560. of Mark together,

  561. the price of admission

  562. to this gospel

  563. is admitting your need.

  564. We are not here

  565. as an intellectual exercise.

  566. I am not here

  567. to simply give you

  568. some kind of insights

  569. into this text.

  570. we are here

  571. to be saved.

  572. We are here

  573. for Jesus,

  574. this great physician

  575. to come

  576. and to help us.

  577. I want you to think

  578. about it like this.

  579. If you've been in school,

  580. you know there are

  581. two ways to take a class.

  582. You can take it

  583. for credit

  584. or you can audit it.

  585. If you take it

  586. for credit,

  587. you have to do

  588. all the work, right?

  589. You buy the textbooks.

  590. You do the reading.

  591. You write the papers.

  592. You turn in the assignments.

  593. Maybe if there's

  594. a curse upon you,

  595. you have to do

  596. some group work.

  597. If you audit it,

  598. you get to skip

  599. all of that, right?

  600. You just get to show up

  601. for the lectures.

  602. You just get to hear

  603. some things.

  604. You don't have to

  605. engage it very much.

  606. You can gain

  607. some new ideas.

  608. You don't have to do

  609. any work.

  610. The only problem

  611. is that, of course,

  612. you don't get any credit

  613. for the class.

  614. Brothers and sisters,

  615. if we do not admit

  616. our need for Jesus,

  617. we are only going

  618. to audit this class.

  619. Our hope,

  620. our goal

  621. as God's people

  622. is that we would not audit

  623. but we would take it.

  624. And if we're going

  625. to take it,

  626. we have to do

  627. the work.

  628. It's tempting

  629. to believe

  630. if we're someone

  631. who's been a Christian

  632. for a while

  633. that we've arrived,

  634. that repentance

  635. is mainly

  636. for other people

  637. who have not been around

  638. as long as we have

  639. and yet we learn here

  640. in this gospel

  641. we're going to see

  642. over and over

  643. that the people

  644. who see and meet Jesus

  645. and receive his healing

  646. more than any others

  647. are the ones

  648. who are going to admit

  649. their need.

  650. And so the same

  651. is true for us.

  652. If we want to take

  653. this class,

  654. if we want to see

  655. real, true joy

  656. and healing

  657. come from our Lord Jesus

  658. to us

  659. through his gospel,

  660. then we have to admit

  661. as well

  662. that our marriages

  663. might be messier

  664. than they look

  665. from the outside.

  666. The pictures

  667. on Instagram

  668. might not match

  669. the reality

  670. behind closed doors.

  671. You might have to admit,

  672. yes, I struggle

  673. with pornography.

  674. I have an addiction

  675. of this sort

  676. or another sort.

  677. I'm someone

  678. who's tempted

  679. by gossip

  680. that's fueled

  681. by insecurity

  682. and it's torn up

  683. my family

  684. and my community.

  685. I have a tendency

  686. to try to control

  687. other people

  688. rather than to love them.

  689. I'm a salesman.

  690. I lied my way

  691. to the success

  692. I experience now

  693. and I'm deathly afraid

  694. that I'm going

  695. to be found out.

  696. I work hard

  697. but I do it

  698. to make others

  699. owe me

  700. and so it's a form

  701. of deep manipulation.

  702. The question

  703. for us

  704. is this,

  705. do you truly

  706. think you need

  707. Jesus?

  708. Are you willing

  709. to do what John

  710. is asking for here

  711. to engage

  712. in repentance

  713. for the forgiveness

  714. of sins?

  715. That is who

  716. Jesus is coming for.

  717. That is who

  718. he's bringing

  719. his healing for.

  720. I know some of you

  721. here in this room

  722. have experienced

  723. over the last

  724. couple years

  725. real and deep

  726. and powerful change.

  727. We've seen

  728. in various circumstances

  729. the true

  730. power of God

  731. at work

  732. and you have

  733. only experienced

  734. that power

  735. at work

  736. if you have

  737. had the humility

  738. to confess

  739. your need.

  740. In fact,

  741. I can't think

  742. of anyone

  743. who has experienced

  744. deep and real

  745. and true transformation

  746. without the humility

  747. and confession

  748. that comes with saying

  749. I need help.

  750. Things here

  751. are not

  752. what they need

  753. to be

  754. or should be.

  755. There's powerful

  756. things going on

  757. right now

  758. in our band

  759. of brothers

  760. Bible study,

  761. our men who meet

  762. on Saturday mornings.

  763. The reason

  764. that God

  765. is at work

  766. in such a powerful

  767. way

  768. is because

  769. there's deep

  770. honesty

  771. and humility.

  772. That's what

  773. gospel transformation

  774. requires.

  775. It's the willingness

  776. to admit

  777. our problems

  778. and our need

  779. that leads

  780. to joy.

  781. We're going to

  782. talk about this

  783. more in Mark

    Mark 2 chapter mention

  784. chapter 2.

  785. I'll simply say this.

  786. When Jesus talks

  787. about the fact

  788. that he's come

  789. not for the healthy

  790. but for the sick,

  791. we'll see everyone

  792. is actually sick.

  793. It's just that

  794. some people

  795. are willing

  796. to admit it.

  797. Others are not.

  798. Everyone

  799. is actually sick.

  800. It's just

  801. some people

  802. are willing

  803. to admit it.

  804. Others

  805. are not.

  806. You can't

  807. get help

  808. unless you ask.

  809. It's true

  810. in this life.

  811. It's true

  812. as we start

  813. this journey

  814. with our Lord Jesus

  815. in the gospel

  816. of Mark.

  817. And so

  818. as we ask

  819. these two simple

  820. questions,

  821. we've seen

  822. just the beginning

  823. answer this morning.

  824. Jesus

  825. is the man

  826. who is also God.

  827. He comes

  828. with real

  829. and true

  830. power to heal

  831. and to change.

  832. We respond

  833. to that.

  834. We experience

  835. his power

  836. and his change

  837. as we admit

  838. and confess

  839. our need for it.

  840. You can't get help

  841. unless you ask

  842. for it.

  843. in his

  844. autobiography

  845. About Face,

  846. Colonel David Hackworth

  847. who became famous

  848. for his involvement

  849. in the Vietnam War

  850. tells about his time

  851. in Korea

  852. and Vietnam.

  853. And in between

  854. that time

  855. he spent

  856. some of his service

  857. in the army

  858. and

  859. stationed in Germany.

  860. And while he was

  861. stationed in Germany

  862. he had all sorts

  863. of interesting things

  864. happen to him.

  865. A variety of boring

  866. things happened to him.

  867. And at one point

  868. he had this visit

  869. from this man

  870. who was very prominent

  871. at the time

  872. named General

  873. Yabakovsky.

  874. And Yabakovsky

  875. was the chief

  876. of the Soviet army

  877. in East Germany

  878. and he came to inspect

  879. their battle group.

  880. And so

  881. as you would expect

  882. they needed to prepare

  883. for this great general

  884. to come

  885. and so they had

  886. a variety

  887. of creative ideas.

  888. First of all

  889. they repainted

  890. some of the walls

  891. on their barracks

  892. except

  893. they only painted

  894. the sides of the walls

  895. that you could see

  896. from the plane

  897. as it landed.

  898. They needed to worry

  899. about the other sides

  900. the plane wasn't

  901. going to pass those.

  902. On this air strip

  903. where his plane

  904. was going to land

  905. there were some

  906. large patches of dirt.

  907. So they thought

  908. well if you're looking

  909. down from the airplane

  910. and you see

  911. these large patches

  912. of dirt

  913. how about instead

  914. of them being brown

  915. they're green.

  916. So they took

  917. some green paint

  918. and they painted

  919. up the brown dirt

  920. so it would look

  921. like grass

  922. when you were coming down.

  923. And then

  924. since this man

  925. was a Russian general

  926. they pulled all

  927. the Russian speakers

  928. they could find

  929. and they put those

  930. as the people

  931. who were on that day.

  932. And so they wanted

  933. this man to come in

  934. and think

  935. wow look at this army

  936. every single one

  937. of their soldiers

  938. from the top

  939. to the bottom

  940. speaks Russian.

  941. These Americans

  942. are amazing.

  943. So they pull out

  944. all the stops

  945. to cover up reality.

  946. They want things

  947. to appear

  948. greater and better

  949. than they actually are.

  950. And that's our intuition

  951. that's what we want

  952. when a great person

  953. comes and visits.

  954. We want to prepare

  955. the way.

  956. We want things

  957. to appear

  958. better than reality.

  959. We want to clean up.

  960. John the Baptist

  961. tells us

  962. someone great

  963. is coming.

  964. God himself

  965. is on the way

  966. coming with his power

  967. except

  968. he,

  969. this king

  970. is the one

  971. who comes

  972. to clean up.

  973. He requires us

  974. not to paint

  975. over the dirt

  976. with green paint.

  977. He requires us

  978. on the other hand

  979. to actually show him

  980. our mess.

  981. It's not that

  982. we clean

  983. for him

  984. but that

  985. we show him

  986. how dirty

  987. and broken

  988. we are

  989. and he

  990. cleans

  991. for us.

  992. Instead

  993. of looking

  994. good

  995. we admit

  996. that we're not.

  997. That is our

  998. introduction

  999. and our pathway

  1000. into the gospel

  1001. of Mark.

  1002. Let's pray.

  1003. Our Father in heaven

  1004. we thank you

  1005. that you

  1006. send us

  1007. your Lord Jesus

  1008. and that you

  1009. speak to us

  1010. about him

  1011. even now.

  1012. We ask that you

  1013. give us

  1014. the hope

  1015. and encouragement

  1016. that comes

  1017. from knowing

  1018. that he

  1019. is showing up

  1020. as God himself

  1021. with your presence

  1022. and power.

  1023. We ask that you

  1024. would give us

  1025. the humility

  1026. and courage

  1027. and joy

  1028. to admit our need

  1029. that Jesus

  1030. would be able

  1031. to help us

  1032. clean up

1033. that we would be able

  1034. to prepare

  1035. the way.

  1036. We ask these things

  1037. grateful

  1038. that we don't have

  1039. to pretend

  1040. things are better

  1041. than they are

  1042. but instead

  1043. we can simply

  1044. ask them

  1045. in the mighty name

  1046. of Jesus Christ.

  1047. Amen.
