  1. Good morning. My name is Matthew Capone, and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church,

  2. and it's my joy to bring God's Word to you today. A special welcome if you're new or visiting with us.

  3. We're glad that you're here, and we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats,

  4. but because we're following Jesus together as one community, and as we follow Jesus together,

  5. we become convinced that there's no one so good, they don't need God's grace, and no one so bad they can't have it,

  6. which is why we come back week after week to hear what God has to say to us in His Word.

  7. We're continuing this morning our study in the Gospel of Mark.

  8. You'll remember that the Gospel of Mark tells the story of Jesus in His life and His death and His resurrection,

  9. and as I've been telling you, when we look at Jesus, when we talk about Him,

  10. we're not talking about an abstraction or an idea or a theory.

  11. We're not talking about a mythical figure.

  12. In fact, we're talking about a real man who lived in real time and real space,

  13. and so I've been giving you these facts about Jesus to help us remember just the earthiness and the reality of Him.

  14. I've told you a couple times, two weeks ago, that He was born in Bethlehem, five to six miles south of Jerusalem.

  15. He grew up in Nazareth, 64 to 65 miles north of Jerusalem, and Jesus had brothers and sisters.

  16. I told you last week, He had at least seven.

  17. Now, why do I say at least seven?

  18. Why did I not give you an exact number?

  19. Well, it's because the Bible does not give us an exact number.

  20. In Mark 6, verse 3, which we'll come to eventually,

    Mark 6:3

  21. and also in Matthew 13, verse 55, we're told that Jesus has four brothers.

    Matthew 13:55

  22. Their names are James and Joseph and Judas and Simon, so four brothers, and then He has sisters.

  23. So we're not told how many sisters He has.

  24. We just know that He has two or more.

  25. Now, why the Bible doesn't tell us?

  26. My personal theory, which I can't prove, is that He had so many sisters that they couldn't name them all.

  27. We actually don't know exactly why it doesn't tell us.

  28. But just do the math with me.

  29. So you've got four brothers.

  30. Jesus is number five.

  31. Then you've got two sisters, six and seven.

  32. So that's how we have at least Jesus being one of at least seven brothers and sisters.

  33. So as I said last week, if you have a lot of brothers and sisters, Jesus feels your pain.

  34. Okay, this morning we are coming.

  35. We're continuing going slowly through Mark chapter 1.

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  36. We're coming now to verses 12 and 13.

  37. And we're asking our two questions for the gospel of Mark.

  38. Our first question is, who is Jesus?

  39. And our second question is, how do we respond to Him?

  40. Who is Jesus?

  41. How do we respond to Him?

  42. And we saw at the very beginning, chapter 1, verses 1 through 8, that Jesus is the one who comes looking for our repentance.

  43. So He comes as the physician.

  44. Remember, Jesus tells us in Mark chapter 2, verse 17,

    Mark 2:17

  45. those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick.

  46. I've come to call the righteous, but sinners.

  47. So He comes as the physician.

  48. We have to respond to Him by admitting our need.

  49. Remember, need is the price of admission for Jesus.

  50. Then last week we looked at Jesus' baptism, and we saw that Jesus is not just the physician.

  51. He's also the king that we see from Psalm 2, the king who rules over the nations.

  52. And He's also the suffering servant from Isaiah.

  53. So He's so great on the one hand that the heavens are torn open for God to speak about Him.

  54. He's so humble on the other hand that He receives baptism from John the Baptist,

  55. who's unworthy even to untie His sandals.

  56. And so He stands in the place of sinners.

  57. This morning as we come to verses 12 and 13, we're going to see, again in our question about Jesus,

  58. we're going to see Jesus' perfection, and we're also going to look at Jesus' power.

  59. We're going to look at His perfection and His power.

  60. And with that, I invite you to turn with me to the Gospel of Mark chapter 1, verse 12.

    Mark 1:12

  61. You can turn there in your worship guide.

  62. You can turn there in your Bible.

  63. You can turn there in your phone.

  64. Regardless of where you turn, remember that this is God's Word.

  65. And God tells us that His Word is more precious than gold, even the finest gold,

  66. and it's sweeter than honey, even honey that comes straight from the honeycomb.

  67. And so that's why we read now Mark chapter 1, starting at verse 12.

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  68. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's Word.

  69. Our Father in heaven, we thank you again that you have spoken to us,

  70. and we ask that you would speak to us clearly this morning by your Word,

  71. that you would show us Jesus, that we would understand more who He is,

  72. and that you'd encourage us and you'd challenge us to follow Him.

  73. We ask that you do these things by your Spirit,

  74. that you would help us do what we cannot do alone,

  75. which is to hear from you and to respond.

  76. We ask these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

  77. If you are familiar at all with rock climbing,

  78. you know that there's at least two types of climbing you can do.

  79. You can do what's called free climbing,

  80. or you can do what's called free solo.

  81. And if you're free climbing, it means that you use ropes

  82. and you use safety equipment not to help you, but just to protect you.

  83. So you're using all your own strength to move up the rock.

  84. The good thing is if you fall, you have a rope to catch you.

  85. If you hit the ground, you have a helmet to protect you.

  86. Now, free solo, however, is a step beyond that.

  87. You have to use all your own strength to push yourself up the rock,

  88. just like in free climbing.

  89. But in free solo, you have no safety equipment.

  90. So you don't have any ropes to back you up.

  91. Often, if you see pictures or video of people free soloing,

  92. they have no helmet either.

  93. And so it is just you and the rock.

  94. And you can imagine, obviously, this is extremely dangerous.

  95. Less than 1% of people who rock climb will do free soloing

  96. because it's basically you have to be crazy to do it.

  97. Now, if you have Disney Plus or Netflix,

  98. you probably know where I'm going here.

  99. The movie Free Solo came out in 2018,

  100. and it tells the story of this man named Alex Honnold

  101. whose free solo's El Capitan,

  102. which is this 3,200 feet flat, just straight up rock face

  103. on Yosemite National Park in California.

  104. And so he does what no one has done before,

  105. what is literally crazy.

  106. In fact, at some point in the movie,

  107. they find out his amygdala doesn't really work.

  108. So he doesn't have an appropriate measure of fear

  109. like a normal person would.

  110. And we track his time as he's training

  111. and preparing to climb up this flat rock face.

  112. Now, his friend, Tommy Caldwell,

  113. who has his own movie called The Dawn Wall,

  114. shows up at various points throughout Free Solo

  115. and he tells us this to explain what it is

  116. that this man's up against.

  117. Imagine an Olympic gold medal level achievement

  118. that if you don't get that gold medal,

  119. you're going to die.

  120. That's pretty much what free soloing El Cap is like.

  121. You have to do it perfectly.

  122. And then later he tells us,

  123. I think everybody who has made free soloing

  124. a big part of their life is dead now.

  125. And so he lays out the stakes for us.

  126. It is either perfection on the one hand

  127. or death on the other.

  128. That's what this man is up against.

  129. It's a binary choice.

  130. He's either going to succeed or he's going to die.

  131. And so as it comes to the point in the film

  132. where he's actually going to do the climb,

  133. his girlfriend, Sunny, leaves town

  134. because she can't stand to be there

  135. where he's doing the climb.

  136. She just waits with a cell phone

  137. so that she can receive news

  138. about whether he's been successful or not.

  139. Of course, if you've watched it,

  140. you know how it ends.

  141. He makes it to the top in just under four hours.

  142. And so we see at the very end of the movie this text.

  143. On June 3rd, 2017,

  144. Alex Honnold becomes the first person

  145. to free solo El Capitan.

  146. It took him three hours and 56 minutes.

  147. Now I tell you all this

  148. as we come to Jesus' time in the wilderness

  149. because Alex does two things here.

  150. First of all,

  151. he does something that's absolutely perfect.

  152. He is able to climb up

  153. at a completely 90 degree straight up rock face

  154. for 3,200 feet with no helmet and no ropes.

  155. Not only does he do something

  156. that's completely perfect,

  157. he also is able to succeed

  158. where no one else has been able to.

  159. He succeeds where others have failed.

  160. And as we come to this passage this morning

  161. in Mark chapter one,

  162. we are looking at something very similar.

  163. When we talk about Jesus,

  164. as I mentioned during our confession of faith this morning,

  165. we often talk about the fact that Jesus dies for our sins.

  166. He paid the penalty for our sins.

  167. And amen, we believe that's true.

  168. That is our hope.

  169. What we also need to remember

  170. is that Jesus did not just take the punishment we deserve.

  171. He also lived the perfect life

  172. that we should have lived but did not.

  173. And we see that perfection,

  174. that sinlessness of Jesus throughout his life.

  175. We're gonna see it throughout the gospel of Mark.

  176. We see it in a special way here in this passage

  177. because Mark is highlighting for us

  178. that Jesus does what is perfect.

  179. He succeeds where others have failed.

  180. And specifically, he succeeds here

  181. where the nation of Israel failed.

  182. And I'll explain.

  183. Remember last week, I talked about the fact

  184. that we can hear just a few notes sometimes

  185. in the New Testament,

  186. and it will pull up for us this whole story

  187. from the Old Testament.

  188. Just like Mark did that last week,

  189. he's doing it this week as well.

  190. And so I invite you to turn back in your worship guide

  191. and look at our reading from Deuteronomy chapter eight.

  192. And I'm gonna show you this echo here that's happening.

  193. There's this echo that happens

  194. between the New Testament and the Old Testament.

  195. First of all, Jesus is out in the wilderness for 40 days.

  196. You'll see in Deuteronomy chapter eight in verse four,

  197. God tells them you were in the wilderness for 40 years.

  198. So Jesus, 40 days being tempted.

  199. He's tempted Israel in the wilderness for 40 years.

  200. We're told, again, wilderness, by the way,

  201. appears in the book of that chapter,

  202. that reading three times.

  203. We see it in verse two.

  204. We see it in verse 15.

  205. We see it in verse 16.

  206. If you've been with us for a while,

  207. you know that repetition in the Bible really matters.

  208. So wilderness here is an idea showing up over and over.

  209. Same thing in this reading from Mark.

  210. We see the word wilderness show up in verse 12 and verse 13.

  211. We saw it earlier, by the way.

  212. John the Baptist is out baptizing in the wilderness.

  213. So there's this echo of 40 days, 40 years.

  214. There's the echo of the wilderness.

  215. There's even an echo of wild animals.

  216. If you look in verse 15 of Deuteronomy chapter eight,

  217. God tells them about the scorpions and the serpents

  218. that he saved them from.

  219. Why is Jesus faced with wild animals as well?

  220. Look at verse 13.

  221. Because he is in the wild and dangerous wilderness,

  222. just like Israel.

  223. And if that were not enough,

  224. we can also see here,

  225. angels were ministering to him.

  226. Deuteronomy chapter 16,

    Deuteronomy 16 chapter mention

  227. God talks about how he cared for Israel in the wilderness.

  228. Now, if you think that I'm just making this up

  229. and I just happened to find some words that correspond,

  230. I'll tell you in Matthew chapter four

  231. and Luke chapter four,

  232. which are the other passages

  233. that talk about Jesus' temptation,

  234. Jesus actually quotes directly from Deuteronomy chapter eight.

  235. And so we're meant to see here this pattern,

  236. this incident here that helps us understand

  237. what Jesus' ministry will look like.

  238. He is going to do perfectly

  239. where in the past everyone else has failed.

  240. Jesus is going to do what was previously impossible.

  241. Because of course,

  242. if you know the story of Israel in the wilderness,

  243. you know part of the reason they were wandering for 40 years

  244. is because of their lack of faith.

  245. They rebelled against God.

  246. As they wandered in the wilderness,

  247. they grumbled against God.

  248. There were people there who were not allowed

  249. to enter the promised land.

  250. They weren't able to go in

  251. because of their lack of faith.

  252. And so we need to have that background,

  253. that understanding as we come to this passage.

  254. If you've watched Free Solo,

  255. you know there's something strange and foreign

  256. and exhilarating about watching this man.

  257. He's literally climbing up a crack.

  258. Like you think maybe he's going to have all these holes,

  259. but he's not.

  260. There's this crack in the wall

  261. and he's just wedging his fingers between it

  262. to go up 3,200 feet.

  263. So there's something that's not real about it.

  264. In the same way,

  265. there's something not real

  266. about what's happening with Jesus here.

  267. He is doing what for anyone else would be impossible.

  268. He is able in the wilderness for 40 days

  269. to withstand this temptation,

  270. this opposition.

  271. He's surrounded by animals

  272. and he's tempted by Satan here.

  273. Oh, I didn't point out another echo.

  274. By the way, Deuteronomy 8, verse 2,

    Deuteronomy 8:2

  275. Jesus talks about testing Israel.

  276. Here we see Jesus is tempted.

  277. And so there's an echo there as well.

  278. And so that's the point for us first

  279. as we look at who Jesus is.

  280. Jesus is the perfect one.

  281. Jesus succeeds where Israel failed.

  282. Jesus succeeds where we fail as well.

  283. Jesus is the one we look to for our perfection.

  284. He is the one we look to for our righteousness.

  285. And so that's our first question, right?

  286. We're asking who is Jesus?

  287. We're also asking how do we respond?

  288. By the way, these are not questions

  289. that I just came up with.

  290. These are the questions

  291. that the Gospel of Mark actually asks itself.

  292. In Mark chapter 8,

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  293. Jesus is going to ask his disciples,

  294. who do people say that I am?

  295. They're going to tell him

  296. and then he's going to say,

  297. okay, who do you say that I am?

  298. So we're looking forward to that chapter

  299. as we ask this question.

  300. The question of how we respond

  301. is also a question from the Gospel of Mark

  302. and also in chapter 8.

  303. In chapter 8, verse 34,

  304. Jesus says,

  305. if anyone would come after me,

  306. let him deny himself,

  307. take up his cross and follow me.

  308. And so Jesus is saying,

  309. you have to respond to who I am.

  310. I demand a response.

  311. And so that's part of our paradigm

  312. as we come over and over.

  313. It's from Mark chapter 8

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  314. and I want us to think,

  315. I'm introducing this new category of 834.

  316. If anyone would come after me,

  317. let him take up his cross and follow me.

  318. So if Jesus is the perfect one,

  319. how are we meant to follow after him?

  320. Well, one of the ways

  321. that we're going to deny ourselves

  322. is that Jesus has to be our perfection.

  323. In other words,

  324. we have to find our identity in Jesus

  325. more than anything else.

  326. We have to find our righteousness

  327. in Jesus more than anything else.

  328. We have to see him

  329. as the one who's obedient for us.

  330. And if we don't,

  331. we'll fall into one of two traps.

  332. First of all,

  333. if our identity is not in Jesus,

  334. we'll be tempted to find

  335. our perfection in ourselves.

  336. There's this question

  337. of what motivates someone

  338. to be willing to risk their lives

  339. so dramatically

  340. by climbing up with no ropes 3,200 feet.

  341. And Alex gives us an answer

  342. at one point during this documentary.

  343. He gives us a couple answers,

  344. but I'm just going to tell you one.

  345. Now, there's this meditation

  346. throughout the film

  347. on the nature of death

  348. because of course,

  349. it's in his face

  350. every time he does this, right?

  351. And so he says this,

  352. look, I don't want to fall off

  353. and die either,

  354. but there's a satisfaction

  355. to challenging yourself

  356. and doing something well.

  357. That feeling is heightened

  358. when you're for sure facing death.

  359. You can't make a mistake.

  360. If you're seeking perfection,

  361. free soloing is as close

  362. as you can get.

  363. And it does feel good

  364. to feel perfect

  365. for a brief moment.

  366. In other words,

  367. Alex is looking to himself

  368. for perfection.

  369. Now, I would imagine

  370. most of you,

  371. probably none of us,

  372. look for perfection

  373. in doing death-defying feats.

  374. However, there are all sorts of ways

  375. in our lives

  376. we look to ourselves

  377. to justify ourselves.

  378. And it can play out like this.

  379. Maybe you're the trash talker.

  380. You're desperately trying

  381. to convince yourself

  382. that you're okay.

  383. The way you do that

  384. is you need to talk

  385. about other people's failures.

  386. If someone else

  387. fails more spectacularly

  388. than you do,

  389. then everything's going to be fine.

  390. You're all right.

  391. You are justified.

  392. You can find

  393. your satisfaction in that.

  394. Maybe you're someone

  395. who's consumed,

  396. not by trash talking

  397. about individuals,

  398. but about the world.

  399. You're convinced

  400. that the world is terrible

  401. and it's going to hell

  402. in a handbasket.

  403. And so if you can talk

  404. about that all the time,

  405. then obviously you're good

  406. by comparison, right?

  407. You don't do those things

  408. that those people out there do.

  409. You don't believe

  410. those things

  411. that they believe.

  412. You're safe.

  413. You do all the right things.

  414. You are your own justification.

  415. Maybe you're a tribalist.

  416. You just know

  417. you're not like

  418. those terrible conservatives

  419. or those terrible liberals.

  420. As long as you stay away

  421. from them,

  422. you'll be okay.

  423. And so we're taking

  424. God's law, right?

  425. And we're reducing it

  426. to something manageable

  427. and controllable.

  428. We'll get to the Pharisees,

  429. by the way,

  430. before too long.

  431. Maybe you're someone

  432. who's obsessed

  433. with always looking right

  434. and doing right.

  435. Appearances are everything.

  436. Okay, no one can come over

  437. to your house

  438. unless it's absolutely perfect

  439. because they can't see

  440. that you are anything less

  441. than justified.

  442. Maybe you're the performer

  443. and the pretender.

  444. People are only allowed

  445. to get so close to you

  446. before they receive

  447. the stiff arm

  448. because you can't handle

  449. other people

  450. knowing the truth.

  451. And we could go on.

  452. But if Jesus

  453. is not our perfection,

  454. we are tempted

  455. to try to be

  456. or appear

  457. perfect ourselves.

  458. The other ditch

  459. we can fall into,

  460. maybe you know

  461. you're not perfect

  462. and so instead of

  463. asking Jesus

  464. to be perfect for you

  465. and looking to him,

  466. you want,

  467. you demand

  468. other people

  469. be perfect for you.

  470. The closer

  471. you tie

  472. your identity

  473. to someone,

  474. the harder it is

  475. for you to handle

  476. failure in them.

  477. Now you know this

  478. intuitively.

  479. There's things

  480. that people would do,

  481. can do,

  482. that you just laugh at,

  483. right?

  484. You just think that's,

  485. or it's not a big deal

  486. to you.

  487. Maybe that's a little quirky,

  488. maybe that's a little silly,

  489. but you know,

  490. that's just them.

  491. But if someone

  492. who's related to you

  493. does it,

  494. the feeling

  495. is very different,

  496. right?

  497. It's like nails

  498. on a chalkboard.

  499. What's forgivable

  500. in other people

  501. is unforgivable

  502. in this person.

  503. Why?

  504. Because you're so tied up

  505. in your identity

  506. with them,

  507. you can't allow them

  508. to be anything less

  509. than perfect.

  510. It's why there's things

  511. that we find endearing

  512. in people we know,

  513. they're just our friends

  514. that we find excruciating

  515. about our family members.

  516. It's because our identity

  517. is tied up in them.

  518. We need them,

  519. in other words,

  520. to be perfect for us.

  521. So it's hard to show grace

  522. for other people's mistakes,

  523. right?

  524. Because they're making you

  525. look bad.

  526. It's what happens

  527. when parents drive

  528. their kids to success,

  529. not because of their desires

  530. for them,

  531. but because they want

  532. the glory that comes.

  533. They want people to know,

  534. I am the perfect parent.

  535. We are the perfect family.

  536. And so looking to Jesus

  537. as our perfection

  538. allows us

  539. to actually love

  540. the people

  541. who are closest to us.

  542. Jesus frees us

  543. to be close

  544. to imperfect people.

  545. Imperfect people

  546. like you and me.

  547. Of course,

  548. this takes us

  549. back to Mark 1,

    Mark 1:1–8

  550. verses 1-8.

  551. Remember we said,

  552. need is the price

  553. of admission.

  554. If we want

  555. to follow Jesus,

  556. we have to admit

  557. our need.

  558. The question is,

  559. how do we do that?

  560. One of the ways

  561. we do it

  562. is we know

  563. it's okay

  564. to admit our need

  565. when we know

  566. that Jesus

  567. is the one

  568. who's perfect for us.

  569. When we know

  570. we can look

  571. to his perfect life

  572. on our behalf.

  573. That's what makes it safe

  574. to live a

  575. verse 1,

  576. 1-8 sort of life.

  577. That's what makes it safe

  578. for us

  579. to confess our need

  580. to God

  581. and to others.

  582. And so Jesus,

  583. he's our perfection.

  584. We respond to him

  585. by letting him

  586. be that for us.

  587. We don't demand it

  588. of ourselves.

  589. We don't demand it

  590. of others.

  591. Now we could also talk

  592. about following Jesus

  593. in suffering here.

  594. That's another portion

  595. of this passage.

  596. We're going to save that

  597. for later in the Gospel of Mark

  598. and I'll point you back

  599. to this passage

  600. because we're going to have

  601. plenty of opportunities

  602. to talk about that.

  603. But as we look

  604. at this idea

  605. of following Jesus,

  606. remember I told you

  607. we're going to look

  608. at his perfection

  609. and his power.

  610. The question is

  611. how is it

  612. that we look

  613. to Jesus?

  614. How do we experience

  615. him as the one

  616. who makes things right

  617. rather than everyone else?

  618. And Jesus gives us,

  619. Mark here gives us

  620. a hint.

  621. There's something

  622. I did not talk about

  623. last week

  624. because there's so much

  625. in each of these verses

  626. even as our readings

  627. are so short

  628. that I want to point

  629. your attention to this week

  630. if you have your Bible open.

  631. I want you to look

  632. at verse 11

  633. from last week

  634. that comes

  635. right before

  636. verse 12.

  637. Verse 11 says,

  638. And a voice came

  639. from heaven,

  640. You are my beloved son.

  641. With you

  642. I am well pleased.

  643. Then immediately,

  644. verse 12,

  645. the Spirit drove him

  646. into the wilderness

  647. and he was in the wilderness

  648. 40 days being tempted

  649. by Satan.

  650. Now Mark's narrative

  651. is so tight,

  652. it's so concise,

  653. there is no coincidence here.

  654. We are meant

  655. to see the contrast,

  656. the juxtaposition,

  657. the connection

  658. between those two verses.

  659. In other words,

  660. why is Jesus

  661. able to go

  662. out into the wilderness

  663. and withstand temptation?

  664. Jesus goes out

  665. and withstands temptation

  666. out of his identity

  667. and relationship

  668. with the Father.

  669. He hears

  670. God's pleasure in him

  671. and it's out of that

  672. that he's able

  673. to remain faithful.

  674. Some people have put it this way,

  675. even Jesus

  676. needed to know

  677. his Father was proud of him.

  678. Jesus is acting

  679. with the rest of the Trinity.

  680. He's not out of relationship

  681. with him.

  682. We just saw

  683. Father, Son, Holy Spirit

  684. all at once

  685. in verses 8-11.

  686. That's why we did

  687. the confession of faith

  688. last week

  689. about the Trinity.

  690. Jesus does this

  691. in his relationship.

  692. He has a secure

  693. attachment

  694. and identity

  695. with the Father.

  696. And so Jesus

  697. walks in that

  698. as he's faithful

  699. in temptation.

  700. That is the power

  701. that he has.

  702. That he has

  703. perfect communion

  704. with the Father

  705. and the Spirit.

  706. Brothers and sisters,

  707. the same

  708. is true

  709. for us.

  710. Our power

  711. comes,

  712. our ability

  713. to obey

  714. comes,

  715. our ability

  716. to follow

  717. Jesus

  718. comes

  719. as we hear

  720. God's voice

  721. of pleasure

  722. over us.

  723. In other words,

  724. God's grace

  725. always comes

  726. before obedience.

  727. I pointed this out

  728. before in our worship service.

  729. There's a reason

  730. we have the confession

  731. of sin

  732. and the assurance

  733. of pardon

  734. before we have

  735. the offering.

  736. Because we give

  737. as children of God.

  738. We don't give

  739. to become

  740. children of God.

  741. Jesus here

  742. obeys

  743. as a member

  744. of the Trinity.

  745. He doesn't obey

  746. to become

  747. a member

  748. of the Trinity.

  749. It is his

  750. identity

  751. and connection

  752. and love

  753. with the Father

  754. that is his power.

  755. Now I told you

  756. that I was going

  757. to give you

  758. Alex gives us

  759. two reasons

  760. he climbs.

  761. One of them

  762. is because

  763. he wants to be

  764. perfect.

  765. He loves that

  766. feeling

  767. for a moment.

  768. There's a somewhat

  769. darker reason

  770. we get some

  771. glimpses

  772. throughout this

  773. documentary

  774. into what

  775. his life

  776. was like

  777. growing up.

  778. His mom

  779. narrates

  780. that his

  781. father

  782. was distant

  783. and often

  784. the only thing

  785. Alex would

  786. heal from

  787. his parents

  788. was criticism.

  789. And then

  790. he goes on

  791. to talk

  792. about

  793. what his

  794. mom was

  795. like.

  796. He said

  797. my mom's

  798. favorite

  799. sayings

  800. are

  801. almost

  802. doesn't

  803. count

  804. or

  805. good

  806. enough

  807. isn't.

  808. No matter

  809. how well

  810. I ever

  811. do at

  812. anything

  813. it's

  814. not

  815. that

  816. good.

  817. The

  818. bottomless

  819. pit

  820. of

  821. self

  822. loathing.

  823. I mean

  824. that's

  825. definitely

  826. the

  827. motivation

  828. for

  829. some

  830. soloing.

  831. In

  832. other words

  833. Alex's

  834. search

  835. for

  836. perfection

  837. comes

  838. out of

  839. his

  840. disconnection

  841. from

  842. his

  843. parents.

  844. He

  845. looks

  846. to

  847. find

  848. it

  849. in

  850. himself

  851. because

  852. he

  853. does

  854. not

  855. have

  856. the

  857. voice

  858. of

  859. his

  860. father.

  861. Brothers

  862. and

  863. sisters

  864. we

  865. do

  866. not

  867. follow

  868. after

  869. Jesus

  870. to

  871. earn

  872. God's

  873. favor.

  874. We

  875. follow

  876. after

  877. him

  878. because

  879. we

  880. know

  881. that

  882. we

  883. already

  884. have

  885. it.

  886. God

  887. does

  888. not

  889. say

  890. to

  891. us

  892. almost

  893. doesn't

  894. count.

  895. God

  896. does

  897. not

  898. say

  899. to

  900. us

  901. good

  902. enough

  903. isn't.

  904. God

  905. says

  906. to

  907. us

  908. in

  909. Christ

  910. you

  911. are

  912. my

  913. beloved

  914. son.

  915. God

  916. is

  917. not

  918. to

  919. understand

  920. Jesus'

  921. action

  922. in

  923. this

  924. one.

  925. I

  926. know

  927. some

  928. of

  929. you

  930. have

  931. picked

  932. up

  933. this

  934. book

  935. called

  936. A

  937. Theology

  938. of

  939. Mark

  940. by

  941. Hans

  942. Beyer

  943. and

  944. he

  945. says

  946. this

  947. talking

  948. about

  949. God's

  950. affirmation

  951. of

  952. Jesus.

  953. There

  954. is

  955. great

  956. encouragement

  957. for the

  958. disciples

  959. in

  960. this

  961. affirmation

  962. which

  963. is

  964. not

  965. only

  966. the

  967. affirmation

  968. of

  969. Jesus

  970. as

  971. the

  972. eternal

  973. son

  974. of

  975. God

  976. who

  977. is

  978. well

  979. loved

  980. by

  981. his

  982. father.

  983. Nor

  984. is

  985. it

  986. only

  987. the

  988. affirmation

  989. of

  990. the

  991. divine

  992. glory

  993. of

  994. Jesus.

  995. There

  996. is

  997. far

  998. more

  999. to

  1000. it

  1001. than

  1002. for

  1003. us

  1004. to

  1005. simply

  1006. understand

  1007. that

  1008. he

  1009. is

  1010. the

  1011. exalted

  1012. son

  1013. of

  1014. man.

  1015. Rather

  1016. since

  1017. we

  1018. are

  1019. adopted

  1020. sons

  1021. and

  1022. daughters

  1023. believers

  1024. benefit

  1025. from

  1026. and

  1027. are

  1028. included

  1029. in

  1030. the

  1031. father's

  1032. love

  1033. for

  1034. his

  1035. son.

  1036. We

  1037. indeed

  1038. receive

  1039. this

  1040. profound

  1041. affirmation

  1042. from

  1043. God.

  1044. we

  1045. have been

  1046. brought

  1047. into

  1048. a

  1049. family

  1050. in

  1051. which

  1052. every

  1053. natural

  1054. and

  1055. adopted

  1056. member

  1057. receives

  1058. that

  1059. kind

  1060. of

  1061. love

  1062. and

  1063. that

  1064. inclusion

  1065. in

  1066. divine

  1067. love

  1068. is

  1069. based

  1070. neither

  1071. on

  1072. where

1073. ask when we come to God is, why did you adopt me? The affirmation of the father's love for the son

1074. is thus extended to his adopted children. Brothers and sisters, if you are in Christ,

1075. the father's affirmation of his love for the son is extended to you. It's when we hear that,

1076. that we're able to put our identity in him rather than anything else. And so who is Jesus?

1077. Jesus is the perfect one. How do we respond to him? We look to him for perfection.

1078. We don't look to ourselves. We don't look to others. Let's pray.

1079. Our father in heaven, we thank you that your word comes and it tells us the truth that if we

1080. belong to you, we have your favor. That we don't work to earn or achieve our adoption,

1081. but it's simply that it's adoption. You have taken us as your sons and your daughters. And so we're

1082. freed from striving and pretending and performing. And instead you offer for us to simply follow

1083. after you in love and obedience, knowing that we're secure and there's nothing in heaven and on earth

1084. that can separate us from the love that you have for us in Christ. We thank you. It's for this reason

1085. we're able to pray these things. And so we ask them in Jesus name. Amen. I invite you to stand for our

  1086. closing hymn.
