  1. It's great to be with you this morning.

  2. I am planting a church in Buena Vista.

  3. If you know Spanish, your ears are ringing.

  4. They say it wrong.

  5. Like a lot of things they say wrong here in Colorado.

  6. So we meet at a, right now we meet at a Baptist church in the evening.

  7. We just started to meet there a couple months ago.

  8. We moved around community center, event center, backyard.

  9. But the first time we met at this church, I had two of my kids who are 14 and 12.

  10. And their only memory of church is being in a church plant.

  11. And so they walk in and they go, what is this place?

  12. They walk into a sanctuary like this.

  13. And they wander all around like this is so odd.

  14. Because they're used to setting chairs up, meeting in a gym.

  15. Just in some interesting places.

  16. But it's great to be with you.

  17. I'm glad Matthew's on vacation.

  18. I think being a guest preacher, I want to make you appreciate Matthew more.

  19. We're going to look at the fourth commandment, which is keep the Sabbath day holy.

  20. Let me read this scripture from the book of Exodus.

  21. Remember the Sabbath day.

  22. Remember the Sabbath day to keep it holy.

  23. Six days you shall labor and do all your work.

  24. But the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God.

  25. On it you shall not do any work.

  26. You or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant or your livestock or the sojourner who is within your gates.

  27. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day.

  28. Therefore, the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

  29. Have you ever thought about how vulnerable we are as human beings within a 24-hour period of our day?

  30. And it's called sleep.

  31. We are the most vulnerable.

  32. And you might be able to stay up for maybe two days, maybe three days, and then your body has to shut down.

  33. And your body has to recalibrate.

  34. And in one way, that's a picture of the Sabbath.

  35. It is needed for our humanity, our brains, and our bodies to function properly.

  36. We have to have that time.

  37. But what keeps you from rest?

  38. Netflix, probably.

  39. You want to stay up and binge watch things?

  40. But what keeps you from deep rest?

  41. This commandment is the most visible, the one that is most visibly rejected by not only society, but also you and me.

  42. This is the one that we think, we really don't need that.

  43. We just need to be more productive, more efficient.

  44. We need to work harder.

  45. And what happens is, we become exhausted.

  46. Our country is one of the most overworked countries.

  47. Because we don't think we need rest.

  48. Because we have this idol as Americans that we need to be productive, we need to get stuff done.

  49. An article in Forbes magazine in 2018 states that the U.S. is the most overworked country in the developing world.

  50. We have more stress illness and work longer hours than our European and Japanese counterparts.

  51. But breaking this commandment might mean that you get a promotion.

  52. I don't think I really need to explain our need for rest really thoroughly.

  53. I think we all feel it.

  54. And we're tired.

  55. And one of the things that causes us to reject this commandment of taking a Sabbath day is that we don't believe God is right.

  56. And when we work harder, what we're saying is, we really don't need God.

  57. We really don't need a day to remember that he is sovereign over everything.

  58. If you've been to BV, we're two hours west of here.

  59. It's a beautiful little town in the mountains.

  60. And one thing I enjoy about the area, which you probably enjoy this about Colorado because you live here, is nature.

  61. The beauty of the mountains, the trees, rivers.

  62. One thing I like about nature is it doesn't need me.

  63. It's not relying on me for something.

  64. And to me, that's a picture of the Sabbath day.

  65. It reminds me that I am not as valuable as I think I am.

  66. Remember the Sabbath day.

  67. It's interesting.

  68. In this commandment, God could have said,

  69. take a Sabbath day and rest.

  70. But he modeled it.

  71. It's not as if we only do things when we see God model something.

  72. In Scripture, when God says,

  73. do this, don't do this,

  74. that's enough for us to remember that.

  75. But he models taking a Sabbath day.

  76. Not that he was tired.

  77. And here in the beginning of this commandment,

  78. we think back to the Genesis account where God gave humanity not only life,

  79. God gave humanity the blessing of work,

  80. God gave humanity marriage,

  81. and God gave humanity Sabbath rest.

  82. But I think this is what happens when we think about the Sabbath.

  83. We want a list of things we should not do.

  84. And that's what we want.

  85. We want to say, okay, I'll take this day,

  86. and let me just stay away from things,

  87. and then I'm resting on the Sabbath.

  88. But this day is for something.

  89. It is something positive.

  90. Not just to stay away from negative things.

  91. And work marriage Sabbath rest,

  92. these are for all of creation.

  93. These are not just for the church,

  94. the people of God.

  95. This is for all of creation.

  96. About a year ago,

  97. I was talking to a friend who has a brain tumor,

  98. and she was told that she would not see her daughter graduate from high school,

  99. which is a couple years out.

  100. And I was talking to her about, like,

  101. what does she enjoy,

  102. and what does she like to do,

  103. and invest time in,

  104. and she can't really sit still.

  105. And I said,

  106. why don't you go and work in your garden?

  107. And as you work in your garden,

  108. remember,

  109. this is a small picture of the new heavens and the new earth.

  110. A great time of rejoicing and resting

  111. because of what Jesus has done.

  112. Six days you shall labor and do all your work.

  113. It is interesting that we don't have one of the commandments

  114. that says,

  115. you better work really hard.

  116. Even in this,

  117. it's implied that we work

  118. because that was pre-fall.

  119. But there's no commandment that says,

  120. you humans,

  121. you better get stuff done.

  122. But what do we tell ourselves?

  123. You human,

  124. you better get something done.

  125. You better show your value.

  126. What happened on the first day of humanity?

  127. First day of humanity, okay?

  128. Creation, story,

  129. humans were created.

  130. Sixth day,

  131. seventh day,

  132. Sabbath.

  133. That was the first day of humanity,

  134. which is really fascinating.

  135. Again, God did not say,

  136. all right,

  137. first day of humanity,

  138. I want to see you guys get something done.

  139. He says,

  140. no,

  141. first day of humanity,

  142. I want you to rest.

  143. And I want you to remember

  144. that God is sovereign.

  145. And you are made,

  146. there's a part of you that is made

  147. that demands rest.

  148. But what

  149. keeps you from that?

  150. how is your value

  151. so tied up

  152. in what you do

  153. that you think

  154. you cannot take a day

  155. and rest?

  156. We

  157. need

  158. rest.

  159. And this is not a day

  160. where

  161. we should say,

  162. you know what,

  163. I'm just going to binge watch

  164. my Netflix.

  165. It's a day that I'm going to

  166. start thinking about Monday.

  167. This is a day that you can

  168. sit outside,

  169. drink some tea,

  170. feel the wind blow,

  171. watch the grass

  172. and the trees,

  173. and remember

  174. that Christ has set you free.

  175. Because at the core of the Sabbath

  176. is a reminder

  177. is a reminder

  178. that you are set free

  179. in Christ.

  180. That your salvation

  181. is not based on what you do.

  182. It is for freedom

  183. that Christ has set you free.

  184. Do not submit again

  185. to the yoke of slavery.

  186. It is for freedom.

  187. Galatians 5.

  188. So how can you

  189. enjoy

  190. being a

  191. flourishing

  192. human being

  193. by taking time

  194. and not be productive?

  195. And we're so fed

  196. by our culture

  197. there's something

  198. in our head

  199. that would say,

  200. well, no,

  201. maybe like 10 minutes

  202. I won't be productive.

  203. Maybe an hour,

  204. but a whole entire day?

  205. And that's what you and I

  206. are called to.

  207. What is the Sabbath?

  208. The Old Testament,

  209. the Sabbath was

  210. a celebration

  211. of creation.

  212. It was the sixth day.

  213. God rested

  214. after creation

  215. and that's what

  216. they would celebrate

  217. in the Old Testament.

  218. What many call

  219. the Sabbath

  220. now

  221. in the New Testament,

  222. they call it

  223. the eighth day

  224. because

  225. it is

  226. something

  227. new.

  228. It is

  229. redemption.

  230. It is

  231. freedom.

  232. And that's

  233. what we celebrate.

  234. No,

  235. we don't have

  236. eight days

  237. in the week

  238. anymore

  239. or never did,

  240. but it's

  241. a celebration

  242. of the first

  243. day of the week,

  244. a day of worship

  245. and mercy

  246. and a day

  247. that we're looking

  248. to our

  249. salvation

  250. coming to

  251. a full reality

  252. when we rest

  253. in Christ

  254. for eternity.

  255. That was worth

  256. celebrating.

  257. Think of

  258. Sabbath

  259. as a day

  260. where

  261. the broken

  262. are restored.

  263. the chained

  264. are set

  265. free.

  266. The sinful

  267. are

  268. forgiven

  269. and all

  270. is made

  271. new.

  272. Doesn't that

  273. sound

  274. beautiful?

  275. Doesn't it

  276. sound wonderful

  277. where we could

  278. free our mind

  279. enough for

  280. one day a week

  281. and enjoy

  282. that there

  283. is new

  284. life

  285. coming

  286. and we

  287. can

  288. remember

  289. that.

  290. Salvation

  291. is

  292. by

  293. rest.

  294. It's not

  295. by works.

  296. Well,

  297. in one way

  298. it is by works

  299. because who

  300. worked for

  301. your salvation?

  302. Christ

  303. did

  304. and he

  305. did it

  306. perfectly.

  307. what would

  308. you do

  309. if this

  310. was a reality

  311. in your

  312. life?

  313. That you

  314. had a

  315. day

  316. that you

  317. could

  318. enjoy

  319. the goodness

  320. of what

  321. it means

  322. to be a

  323. human being?

  324. What would

  325. it look

  326. like?

  327. Maybe

  328. time with

  329. friends,

  330. family,

  331. laughter,

  332. good food,

  333. wine,

  334. a nap,

  335. a walk,

  336. holding your

  337. kid's hand?

  338. It

  339. sounds like

  340. a good

  341. day.

  342. But again,

  343. what keeps

  344. you from

  345. doing

  346. that?

  347. What does

  348. this commandment

  349. tell us

  350. about

  351. God?

  352. I

  353. had a,

  354. well,

  355. he's

  356. passed away

  357. now.

  358. He's a

  359. Presbyterian

  360. minister.

  361. And him

  362. and his

  363. wife would,

  364. on Sunday,

  365. they wanted

  366. to make

  367. the day

  368. really special.

  369. And so

  370. they had

  371. like a

  372. box of

  373. special toys

  374. they'd bring

  375. out for

  376. their kids.

  377. And then

  378. for breakfast,

  379. they got

  380. chocolate

  381. milk,

  382. sugar

  383. cereal,

  384. like just

  385. junk,

  386. okay?

  387. Ding

  388. dongs,

  389. whatever.

  390. And then

  391. what happened

  392. is they'd

  393. go to church

  394. and their

  395. kids were

  396. bouncing

  397. off the

  398. walls.

  399. And they

  400. did it

  401. for like

  402. six weeks

  403. and they're

  404. like,

  405. I don't

  406. know what's

  407. wrong with

  408. our kids.

  409. And they

  410. realized,

  411. oh,

  412. they just

  413. weren't being

  414. wise about

  415. what they

  416. did on

  417. that day,

  418. at that

  419. moment

  420. early.

  421. What does

  422. this commandment

  423. tell us about

  424. God?

  425. This commandment

  426. tells us

  427. that God

  428. is not asking

  429. you to

  430. exhaust

  431. yourself.

  432. He is

  433. not calling

  434. you to

  435. a life

  436. of hyper

  437. performance,

  438. anxiety,

  439. and stress.

  440. He wants

  441. you to

  442. flourish as

  443. a human

  444. being.

  445. And the

  446. only way

  447. we flourish

  448. is if we

  449. know redemption

  450. in Christ.

  451. rest.

  452. That's the

  453. key to our

  454. flourishing.

  455. That you

  456. can know

  457. in your

  458. sin,

  459. God moves

  460. toward you

  461. and he

  462. embraces

  463. you.

  464. And he

  465. holds you

  466. tighter

  467. and stronger

  468. than you

  469. could ever

  470. hold him.

  471. And I

  472. think that's

  473. another picture

  474. of rest.

  475. rest.

  476. And God

  477. works as

  478. you rest.

  479. He works.

  480. To reject

  481. this commandment

  482. is to

  483. reject the

  484. rhythm of

  485. the week

  486. that God

  487. has created

  488. for you

  489. to flourish.

  490. So how

  491. does this

  492. commandment

  493. call us

  494. to live?

  495. Calls us

  496. to six

  497. days you

  498. shall

  499. labor.

  500. And on

  501. the Sabbath

  502. day you

  503. shall rest.

  504. It's to

  505. honor the

  506. weekly

  507. rhythm

  508. of

  509. six days

  510. and one

  511. day of

  512. rest.

  513. So what

  514. does this

  515. look like?

  516. So maybe

  517. on

  518. Thursday

  519. you begin

  520. to think

  521. about

  522. resting on

  523. the Sabbath

  524. and enjoying

  525. the goodness

  526. that God

  527. has provided.

  528. it.

  529. Because I

  530. guarantee

  531. if you're

  532. anything like

  533. me,

  534. if you

  535. start thinking

  536. about Sunday

  537. morning,

  538. your to-do

  539. list is

  540. already going

  541. and you're

  542. not going to

  543. be able to

  544. shut that

  545. off.

  546. And what

  547. would it

  548. look like

  549. for you

  550. as a

  551. church

  552. to enjoy

  553. fellowship

  554. and community

  555. in a

  556. deeper

  557. way

  558. when you

  559. gather

  560. for

  561. worship?

  562. God has

  563. instituted a

  564. weekly

  565. structure

  566. to help

  567. guide the

  568. health of

  569. humanity.

  570. Sabbath is

  571. the opposite

  572. of every

  573. other day.

  574. It's

  575. opposite

  576. day.

  577. day.

  578. When you

  579. were a

  580. kid,

  581. my kids

  582. used to

  583. play

  584. opposite

  585. day.

  586. They'd

  587. ask a

  588. question

  589. like,

  590. is that

  591. if my

  592. kids want

  593. to go to

  594. the park?

  595. I'd say

  596. no because

  597. I'm not a

  598. good dad.

  599. Just go

  600. watch TV.

  601. And they'd

  602. say no,

  603. it's

  604. opposite

  605. day,

  606. so that

  607. means yes.

  608. So on

  609. the Sabbath

  610. day,

  611. it's

  612. opposite

  613. day.

  614. What's

  615. valued

  616. is you

  617. sitting.

  618. What's

  619. valued

  620. is how

  621. good was

  622. your nap?

  623. What's

  624. valued

  625. is were

  626. you able

  627. to extend

  628. mercy?

  629. Were you

  630. able to

  631. worship

  632. God,

  633. your

  634. creator

  635. and

  636. redeemer

  637. in a way

  638. that you

  639. not only

  640. grew

  641. intellectually,

  642. but your

  643. affections

  644. for him

  645. grew.

  646. And your

  647. longing

  648. to be

  649. with him

  650. in the

  651. new heavens

  652. and the

  653. new earth

  654. grew.

  655. That's

  656. what this

  657. day is

  658. called to

  659. be.

  660. Unplugged

  661. from electronics

  662. maybe?

  663. Play a

  664. board game?

  665. Do

  666. something

  667. that gives

  668. you

  669. fulfillment?

  670. the

  671. Lord's

  672. day is

  673. a day

  674. of rest

  675. to remind

  676. yourselves

  677. that God

  678. is in

  679. control.

  680. Eat

  681. good

  682. food,

  683. drink

  684. what's

  685. refreshing,

  686. read a

  687. good

  688. book,

  689. build

  690. deep

  691. relationships.

  692. The

  693. Puritans

  694. called

  695. this

  696. the

  697. Lord's

  698. day,

  699. the

  700. market

  701. day of

  702. the

  703. soul.

  704. it is

  705. a

  706. feast

  707. for your

  708. soul.

  709. So

  710. then what

  711. would that

  712. look like

  713. for your

  714. soul to

  715. really

  716. flourish

  717. and feast?

  718. Because the

  719. rest of the

  720. week

  721. we are

  722. told if

  723. we're not

  724. productive,

  725. if we're not

  726. doing something,

  727. if we're not

  728. growing,

  729. if we're not

  730. showing our

  731. value,

  732. especially at

  733. work and

  734. even in

  735. relationships that

  736. were really

  737. not that

  738. important.

  739. But the

  740. market day of

  741. the soul

  742. is a

  743. reminder that

  744. you serve a

  745. God who

  746. moves toward

  747. you and

  748. he embraces

  749. you and he

  750. has sealed

  751. you into

  752. his family,

  753. that you are

  754. adopted and

  755. you will

  756. never,

  757. ever,

  758. ever,

  759. ever be

  760. alone.

  761. That's

  762. something to

  763. celebrate.

  764. Really,

  765. this is the

  766. Christian's

  767. weekly

  768. 4th of

  769. July

  770. that we

  771. celebrate.

  772. We're set

  773. free.

  774. So I

  775. encourage you

  776. to be aware

  777. of what keeps

  778. you from a

  779. day of rest.

  780. rest.

  781. And how

  782. is that

  783. sin?

  784. Because God

  785. is really

  786. clear here.

  787. This is a

  788. day that our

  789. soul and

  790. our mind

  791. need rest,

  792. to be reminded

  793. of a day to

  794. set time aside

  795. to worship

  796. God and

  797. extend mercy

  798. and enjoy

  799. the good

  800. things.

  801. peace.

  802. So how

  803. does Jesus

  804. fulfill this

  805. commandment?

  806. He is our

  807. ultimate rest.

  808. He is our

  809. ultimate rest.

  810. Nothing will

  811. fully satisfy

  812. you here on

  813. this earth.

  814. You being

  815. a workaholic,

  816. will not

  817. satisfy you.

  818. You immersing

  819. yourself in

  820. entertainment,

  821. you never

  822. having time

  823. to turn

  824. your brain

  825. off or

  826. at least

  827. down.

  828. So what

  829. does it look

  830. like for you

  831. to take time

  832. to rest?

  833. But the

  834. other thing

  835. we need to

  836. remember is

  837. a day of

  838. rest will

  839. not fully

  840. satisfy you.

  841. rest.

  842. Because you

  843. are made

  844. for a

  845. greater

  846. rest.

  847. And that's

  848. in Jesus.

  849. So if you

  850. see this,

  851. and many

  852. of us,

  853. even as we

  854. listen to

  855. sermons,

  856. we get

  857. really

  858. distracted

  859. and we

  860. begin to

  861. think,

  862. okay,

  863. what's my

  864. action step

  865. in here?

  866. What do I

  867. do?

  868. do?

  869. And maybe

  870. you've even

  871. made a

  872. little list

  873. of things

  874. to do

  875. instead

  876. of

  877. remembering

  878. that you

  879. having a

  880. day of

  881. rest will

  882. not ultimately

  883. fulfill you

  884. because your

  885. ultimate rest

  886. is in

  887. Jesus.

  888. And what

  889. does that

  890. look like

  891. for you to

  892. honor this

  893. commandment

  894. and take

  895. time to

  896. rest and

  897. remember you

  898. are redeemed

  899. and you

  900. are set

  901. free.

  902. And maybe

  903. you're here

  904. this morning

  905. and you

  906. are sort of

  907. confused and

  908. you don't

  909. really know

  910. who this

  911. Jesus is

  912. that we've

  913. sung about

  914. and read

  915. confessions

  916. about and

  917. seen here

  918. in this

  919. scripture

  920. and you're

  921. really not

  922. sure where

  923. you are.

  924. I would

  925. encourage you

  926. to take

  927. time to

  928. build some

  929. relationships

  930. here and

  931. to ask some

  932. good questions

  933. so you can

  934. understand that

  935. this sermon is

  936. not about

  937. you need to

  938. take time to

  939. rest.

  940. What I want

  941. to communicate

  942. is you and

  943. I really need

  944. Jesus.

  945. and maybe

  946. that's where

  947. you are.

  948. And that's

  949. okay because I

  950. guarantee everyone

  951. in this room

  952. has been in the

  953. same place

  954. as you are.

  955. The God of the

  956. Bible is a good

  957. and gracious

  958. God and he

  959. wants you to

  960. rest in him

  961. alone.

  962. Not in you

  963. being productive,

  964. not in you

  965. learning something,

  966. doing amazing

  967. things.

  968. He wants you

  969. to rest in

  970. him.

  971. Let me pray.

  972. Most gracious

  973. God, we are

  974. thankful that

  975. you know our

  976. weakness, you

  977. know our

  978. propensity to

  979. put ourself

  980. in the place

  981. of you

  982. and to make

  983. our own

  984. rules and to

  985. find our

  986. significance in

  987. things that are

  988. not ultimate.

  989. and we ask

  990. that your

  991. spirit would

  992. work within

  993. us,

  994. that we

  995. would know

  996. what it

  997. means to

  998. rest in the

  999. goodness of

  1000. Jesus.

  1001. In his name

  1002. we pray.

  1003. Amen.

  1004. Amen.

  1005. Amen.
