  1. Good morning. It's great to be with you again.

  2. I want to invite you to turn with me to the book of Revelation if you have your Bibles with you.

  3. The passage is also found in our bulletins.

  4. We're hearing from God's Word today, Revelation chapter 3,

    Revelation 3 chapter mention

  5. and the call to hold fast that Jesus has to His church,

  6. and it's the church specifically in Philadelphia,

  7. but as this is God's holy and inspired Word,

  8. it is also His Word for us today as well.

  9. So draw your attention to the reading of God's Word from Revelation 3, verses 7 through 13.

    Revelation 3:7–13

  10. And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write,

  11. the words of the Holy One, the true One, who has the key of David,

  12. who opens and no one will shut, who shuts and no one opens.

  13. I know your works.

  14. Behold, I have set before you an open door, which no one is able to shut.

  15. I know that you have but little power,

  16. and yet you have kept my Word and have not denied my name.

  17. Behold, I will make those of the synagogue of Satan,

  18. who say that they are Jews and are not, but lie.

  19. Behold, I will make them come and bow down before your feet,

  20. and they will learn that I have loved you,

  21. because you have kept my Word about patient endurance.

  22. I will keep you from the hour of trial that is coming on the whole world,

  23. to try those who dwell on the earth.

  24. I am coming soon.

  25. Hold fast what you have, so that no one may seize your crown.

  26. The one who conquers, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God.

  27. Never shall he go out of it, and I will write on him the name of my God,

  28. and the name of the city of my God,

  29. the new Jerusalem, which comes down from my God out of heaven,

  30. and my own new name.

  31. He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.

  32. This is the Word of God.

  33. Thanks be to him.

  34. Let us pray together for our time in his Word.

  35. Lord God, Father, Son, and Spirit,

  36. we come now and we sit underneath the preaching,

  37. the proclamation of your Word,

  38. asking that you would be gracious to us,

  39. that you by your Spirit would come and pour out knowledge,

  40. pour out wisdom, pour out revelation about who Jesus is.

  41. Lord, that you would awaken our hearts,

  42. that you would give us understanding about these things,

  43. that you would come and take the things of Jesus

  44. and make them real to our hearts.

  45. We ask that for our little theologians in this room as well,

  46. our covenant children who are in this place.

  47. God, we ask that you would also give them understanding,

  48. that you would help them to see you as you truly are.

  49. Lord, to think big thoughts about you,

  50. that they would have a big God and a big Savior for them even now.

  51. We ask that you would bless the preaching

  52. and the hearing of your Word now for your church,

  53. and it's in Jesus' name that we ask this.

  54. Amen.

  55. Amen indeed.

  56. Well, in December of 1914,

  57. Ernest Shackleton and his 27-member crew

  58. aboard the ship The Endurance

  59. entered the ice fields of the Wendell Sea

  60. navigating through dangerous packed ice.

  61. With only 100 miles left in their journey,

  62. Shackleton made the fateful decision

  63. to stop and wait for a break in the heavy ice.

  64. The temperature dropped and the ice closed in around the ship,

  65. making it impossible to proceed.

  66. The crew would live aboard the ship for the next 10 months.

  67. Gradually, the ship began to succumb

  68. to the crushing grip of the ice.

  69. Shackleton gave the order to abandon ship.

  70. The crew began a march in search of safety,

  71. carrying minimal supplies and dragging three lifeboats.

  72. Eventually, reaching open water,

  73. they boarded the lifeboats and sailed off

  74. in an attempt to find land.

  75. Surviving perilous conditions,

  76. they finally landed on the deserted Elephant Island.

  77. Stranded on that island with no hope of rescue,

  78. Shackleton and four of his crew members

  79. set sail in a lifeboat in an effort to reach the island of South Georgia.

  80. This was a whaling island.

  81. They traveled 800 miles,

  82. 800 nautical miles,

  83. through the world's worst seas.

  84. When they arrived to the island finally,

  85. they discovered that the whaling station

  86. was on the other side of the island.

  87. And in order to rescue the remaining crew in time,

  88. Shackleton and two of his men

  89. had to cross on foot

  90. the treacherous cliffs of this island.

  91. They were icy.

  92. They were forbidding cliffs.

  93. They were vulnerable to sudden blizzards

  94. and hurricane-force winds.

  95. The island's inhabitants, as a matter of fact,

  96. had considered the journey

  97. from one side of the island to the other

  98. on foot impossible.

  99. Nevertheless, Shackleton and his two partners

  100. crossed in 36 hours.

  101. His diary provides an interesting perspective

  102. on the South Georgia island crossing.

  103. This is what Ernest Shackleton's journal says.

  104. Quote,

  105. In memories we were rich.

  106. We had pierced the veneer of outside things.

  107. We had suffered.

  108. We had starved.

  109. We had triumphed.

  110. We had groveled down,

  111. yet grasped at glory,

  112. grown bigger in the bigness of the whole.

  113. We had seen God in his splendors,

  114. heard the text that nature renders.

  115. We had reached the naked soul of men,

  116. and by endurance we conquered.

  117. And while we will likely

  118. never face the extreme physical conditions

  119. that Ernest Shackleton did,

  120. we will face extreme spiritual conditions

  121. where our fortitude,

  122. our resolve,

  123. our endurance will be tested.

  124. The New Testament is clear on this point

  125. that it is through many tribulations

  126. that we enter the kingdom of God,

  127. Acts chapter 14.

    Acts 14 chapter mention

  128. As a matter of fact,

  129. Jesus said,

  130. If they hated me,

  131. they will hate you.

  132. If they persecuted me,

  133. he said,

  134. they will persecute you.

  135. Now this raises the obvious question

  136. as to why.

  137. Why the hatred?

  138. Why the persecution of Jesus of Nazareth?

  139. And why the subsequent hatred

  140. and persecution of his followers?

  141. Why, given the fact

  142. of how pluralistic

  143. the worship of many gods,

  144. the acceptance of many gods,

  145. and how syncretistic

  146. the combining of those gods

  147. the ancient world was?

  148. The ancient world was pluralistic.

  149. You could worship many gods.

  150. It was syncretistic.

  151. You could combine

  152. the worship of many gods.

  153. Why in this context

  154. was the message of Jesus,

  155. the person of Jesus,

  156. so antagonistic?

  157. Every month at our church

  158. at Westside,

  159. we have a potluck dinner

  160. called Eat Church

  161. where everyone brings

  162. what they want to share

  163. with everyone else.

  164. That's what the ancient world

  165. was like in terms of

  166. religion and worship.

  167. Everyone brings

  168. what appeals to them

  169. and says,

  170. here, worship Caesar.

  171. Here, worship Zeus.

  172. Here, worship Artemis,

  173. Diana, and so forth.

  174. Of course,

  175. what's interesting about this

  176. is that our culture

  177. is very much the same

  178. in our day as well.

  179. Even though ours,

  180. perhaps,

  181. is the most secular age

  182. of human history,

  183. that itself,

  184. that itself

  185. is a religious claim.

  186. And that is one

  187. of many claims

  188. that is accepted

  189. right alongside

  190. the major religions

  191. of our world.

  192. If that was the case then,

  193. and it continues

  194. to be the case now,

  195. then the question

  196. that I'm asking is,

  197. why wasn't Jesus

  198. just acknowledged

  199. as another religious teacher?

  200. Why wasn't his message

  201. acknowledged

  202. as just another

  203. religious path?

  204. Why,

  205. in a religious potluck,

  206. wasn't Christianity

  207. just one of many

  208. casserole dishes?

  209. Why the heat?

  210. Why the persecution?

  211. The answer is found

  212. in the book of Revelation,

  213. and in particular,

  214. in Revelation chapter 3,

    Revelation 3 chapter mention

  215. in the word that Jesus has

  216. to his church in Philadelphia.

  217. Verse 7.

  218. You can start there,

  219. looking with me.

  220. He says,

  221. to the angel of the church

  222. in Philadelphia,

  223. write,

  224. the words of the Holy One,

  225. the True One,

  226. who has the key of David,

  227. who opens

  228. and no one will shut,

  229. and who shuts

  230. and no one will open.

  231. You see,

  232. right away, church,

  233. we see in this passage

  234. that Jesus doesn't claim

  235. to be just

  236. another religious teacher,

  237. or that his message

  238. is one of many

  239. that you can take or leave.

  240. No,

  241. Jesus declares,

  242. I am the Holy One.

  243. I am the True One.

  244. He declares that

  245. I am the way,

  246. the truth,

  247. and the life.

  248. No one comes to the Father

  249. but through me.

  250. He proclaims

  251. that all authority

  252. in heaven and on earth

  253. has been given to him.

  254. And he reveals,

  255. he reveals by his spirit

  256. that he is the one

  257. who opens

  258. and no one is able to shut,

  259. who shuts

  260. and no one is able to open.

  261. In other words,

  262. Jesus is exclusive.

  263. Jesus is unique.

  264. He stands alone.

  265. He stands above

  266. every other single person

  267. who has lived.

  268. It's not Jesus versus

  269. fill in the blank.

  270. It's just Jesus.

  271. And that is something

  272. that the church in Philadelphia

  273. knew very well.

  274. little theologians.

  275. Kids,

  276. if you're taking notes,

  277. if you'd like to follow along,

  278. I have two assignments

  279. for you, kids.

  280. One is to draw a picture

  281. of a key and a door.

  282. A key and a door, kids.

  283. And then,

  284. the question is,

  285. what makes Jesus

  286. unique

  287. and stand out

  288. from every other person

  289. who has ever lived?

  290. What makes Jesus unique?

  291. What makes him stand out

  292. from everyone else, kids?

  293. Now,

  294. for the rest of us,

  295. I want to give you

  296. some background

  297. of the city of Philadelphia.

  298. It was founded

  299. as a missionary city

  300. in 189 B.C.

  301. What that means

  302. is that it was meant

  303. to be a gateway,

  304. a doorway

  305. to Asia Minor.

  306. It was the Greek culture

  307. in the east

  308. to further spread

  309. the Greek culture

  310. in the year 189 B.C.

  311. It was a doorway

  312. into Asia.

  313. And this helps us

  314. understand

  315. the play on words

  316. that Jesus is using here

  317. where he says,

  318. I have a door

  319. that I open

  320. and no one is able

  321. to shut

  322. and who shuts

  323. and no one is able

  324. to open.

  325. The church in Philadelphia

  326. would have known

  327. exactly what Jesus

  328. was referring to there.

  329. By the first century,

  330. it was one of the greatest

  331. trade routes

  332. in the Roman Empire.

  333. So the Roman Empire

  334. continued to use Philadelphia

  335. as a doorway,

  336. a doorway from Rome

  337. in the west

  338. to Asia in the east.

  339. It was an open door

  340. linking the two

  341. vastly different cultures

  342. there in the ancient world.

  343. Following a devastating earthquake

  344. early in the first century,

  345. the city was rebuilt

  346. by the Roman Emperor Tiberius

  347. and a temple

  348. was dedicated to him there

  349. as people came

  350. to pay homage

  351. to worship Tiberius

  352. as the savior

  353. of the city.

  354. This helps us understand

  355. why Jesus addresses them

  356. in such an extraordinary way.

  357. They are holding fast,

  358. as he says,

  359. to him

  360. amid a culture

  361. that says

  362. you must worship

  363. these other gods as well.

  364. You must worship Caesar

  365. for he is savior

  366. of the city.

  367. This helps us understand

  368. why Jesus begins

  369. to address them

  370. in the way that he does.

  371. It's very intentional

  372. on his part.

  373. As a matter of fact,

  374. in all of these seven addresses

  375. to his church,

  376. the way that Jesus

  377. describes himself,

  378. he is speaking directly

  379. to what is going on

  380. in that city.

  381. And here in Philadelphia,

  382. he means to remind them,

  383. remind them of who he is

  384. in contrast

  385. with the claims

  386. of the culture

  387. that they're living in.

  388. And what does Jesus

  389. remind them of

  390. in his address?

  391. First, he says

  392. that he is holy.

  393. He is holy.

  394. He is the holy one.

  395. Holy one.

  396. He is none other

  397. than God Almighty.

  398. For John,

  399. who was an apostle,

  400. who was a Jew,

  401. for him,

  402. there was only one

  403. who was holy.

  404. As 1 Samuel 2 says,

  405. it says,

  406. there is none holy

  407. like the Lord.

  408. There is no rock

  409. like our God.

  410. God.

  411. In John's gospel,

  412. John's gospel,

  413. he talks about

  414. in chapter 6,

  415. that the disciples,

  416. after they witnessed

  417. Jesus feeding the 5,000,

  418. they declared

  419. that he was

  420. the holy one

  421. of God.

  422. John knew

  423. who Jesus was.

  424. What is holiness?

  425. Holiness speaks

  426. of separation

  427. or distinction.

  428. Uniqueness,

  429. speaking of

  430. our Lord's

  431. separation,

  432. his uniqueness

  433. from his creation.

  434. It's not Jesus

  435. and his creation

  436. are together.

  437. It's Jesus

  438. over his creation.

  439. Jesus is not

  440. subject to us,

  441. friends.

  442. We are subject

  443. to him.

  444. He is not subject

  445. to the cosmos.

  446. He is over

  447. the cosmos.

  448. The cosmos

  449. is in subjection

  450. to him.

  451. He upholds it,

  452. the Bible says,

  453. by the word

  454. of his power,

  455. Hebrews chapter 1.

    Hebrews 1 chapter mention

  456. Jesus moves

  457. in a mysterious way

  458. to quote the old hymn.

  459. His wonders

  460. to perform.

  461. He plants

  462. his footsteps

  463. in the sea

  464. and he rides

  465. upon the storm.

  466. This is who

  467. the Lord Jesus Christ

  468. is, friends.

  469. He is the almighty

  470. one.

  471. He is the sovereign

  472. son of God

  473. who is addressing

  474. his church

  475. from a place

  476. of authority

  477. and a place

  478. of majesty.

  479. So Jesus is holy.

  480. The second thing

  481. that he says

  482. is that Jesus

  483. is true.

  484. He is the true one.

  485. Later on

  486. in the book

  487. of Revelation,

  488. John describes

  489. Jesus as being

  490. holy and true.

  491. And the word

  492. here for true

  493. means that

  494. Jesus is the authentic.

  495. He is the genuine.

  496. He is real.

  497. And this is signifying

  498. that everything

  499. about Jesus

  500. is the real deal.

  501. Everything about him

  502. is the real deal.

  503. His divine nature,

  504. his attributes,

  505. his words,

  506. his character.

  507. Jesus is the standard

  508. of truth.

  509. We do not measure him

  510. by our inferior standards.

  511. He is the measuring rod

  512. that assesses

  513. and judges.

  514. We do not appeal

  515. to a higher authority

  516. to validate Jesus.

  517. Jesus is the highest authority.

  518. He is validation itself.

  519. Jesus is the very embodiment

  520. of truth.

  521. Glory as of the only son

  522. from the father

  523. full of grace

  524. and truth,

  525. John 1.

  526. He is the true light

  527. which enlightens everyone.

  528. He is the true light

  529. which continues

  530. to shine in the darkness

  531. and the darkness

  532. cannot put it out.

  533. Now why is it significant

  534. that John's pointing this out?

  535. Why is the fact

  536. that Jesus is holy

  537. and Jesus is true,

  538. why is that significant?

  539. Little theologians,

  540. kids,

  541. why is it important

  542. for you to know

  543. that Jesus is holy

  544. and Jesus is significant

  545. or Jesus is true?

  546. Well,

  547. in a world

  548. that is searching

  549. for significance,

  550. searching for meaning,

  551. in a world

  552. that is longing

  553. for transcendence,

  554. here is Jesus,

  555. the holy one,

  556. made flesh,

  557. walking and talking

  558. among us

  559. and to us.

  560. Jesus,

  561. the holy one,

  562. the transcendent one,

  563. is addressing you and I

  564. in a world

  565. that is searching for

  566. and wondering

  567. if there is any truth,

  568. anything worth believing

  569. and defending,

  570. anything worth fighting

  571. and dying for.

  572. Here is Jesus,

  573. the source

  574. in whom all the treasures

  575. of wisdom

  576. and knowledge

  577. and truth

  578. are found.

  579. In him,

  580. in him, church,

  581. we have holiness.

  582. In him,

  583. we have truth.

  584. And these two things

  585. begin to shape

  586. the way that we view

  587. the world.

  588. They begin to shape

  589. the way that we view

  590. ourselves in the world,

  591. what we are called to.

  592. They answer the question

  593. of significance.

  594. They answer the question

  595. of meaning

  596. and purpose

  597. and value.

  598. Much like for the church

  599. in Philadelphia

  600. who are holding fast

  601. to this testimony,

  602. the question for you

  603. and I today is,

  604. are we holding fast?

  605. Are we holding fast

  606. to this Jesus

  607. as he is revealed

  608. in scripture?

  609. To the one

  610. who is holy

  611. and true?

  612. It was just as,

  613. if not more difficult

  614. for them in the first century

  615. to hold fast to this.

  616. They were facing

  617. open persecution.

  618. They were facing

  619. heat for their witness.

  620. What about us?

  621. Do we know him

  622. who is holy?

  623. Do we know his voice?

  624. One of the ways

  625. that we can tell

  626. that we listen

  627. to his voice

  628. is we listen

  629. because we know

  630. his voice

  631. has authority.

  632. It carries authority.

  633. And that's the third

  634. point that Jesus

  635. reminds them of.

  636. His authority.

  637. Not only because

  638. of his character

  639. and his attributes,

  640. he is holy,

  641. he is true,

  642. but because of his authority,

  643. he holds the key of David,

  644. he says there.

  645. In our Old Testament

  646. reading from Isaiah 22,

  647. you heard it.

  648. We heard how God

  649. intervened at a time

  650. that he provided

  651. a steward

  652. for the house of David

  653. in Eliakim.

  654. And this was God

  655. providing this

  656. to David's household

  657. so that David's household

  658. could be preserved.

  659. It could be preserved

  660. so that the coming Messiah,

  661. the Messiah could come

  662. into the world.

  663. The Messiah who now

  664. rules and reigns

  665. over David's household.

  666. The church.

  667. That's what Jesus

  668. is alluding to

  669. when he says

  670. that I have the keys

  671. of David.

  672. It's absolutely incredible

  673. to think of how God

  674. used that bleak moment,

  675. that bleak moment

  676. in history

  677. roughly 700 years

  678. before Jesus was born

  679. as an analogy

  680. pointing to

  681. Christ's own rule

  682. and reign

  683. over his church.

  684. So he holds

  685. the key of David,

  686. he says,

  687. and he opens

  688. and he closes the door.

  689. Much like how the steward

  690. was in charge

  691. of who was in the household,

  692. who was accepted

  693. in the palace,

  694. and who could come

  695. before the king,

  696. so now Jesus says

  697. to the church

  698. in Philadelphia

  699. that he is the one,

  700. he is the one

  701. who opens

  702. and shuts the door.

  703. Now this raises

  704. the question,

  705. what door

  706. is he talking about?

  707. He's about to tell us

  708. that in verse 8

  709. and following.

  710. He says,

  711. I know your works,

  712. behold I have set

  713. before you an open door

  714. which no one

  715. is able to shut.

  716. And in the Bible

  717. when God talks about,

  718. when Jesus talks about

  719. an open door,

  720. it's talking about

  721. within the context

  722. of the advancement,

  723. the establishment

  724. of the gospel message.

  725. And that is

  726. that the church

  727. in Philadelphia

  728. had remained faithful

  729. to that

  730. despite the difficulties

  731. that they were facing.

  732. they had remained

  733. an open door

  734. where the gospel

  735. was being proclaimed.

  736. They were holding

  737. fast to Jesus.

  738. They were not compromising

  739. to the culture

  740. around them,

  741. but they continued

  742. to proclaim.

  743. They continued

  744. to witness

  745. to the truthfulness

  746. of who Jesus was.

  747. And that was

  748. despite the difficulties

  749. that they were facing.

  750. In verse 9,

  751. Jesus says,

  752. I know you have

  753. but little power

  754. and yet you have

  755. kept my word

  756. and you have not

  757. denied my name.

  758. Though they were

  759. little in power,

  760. they were mighty

  761. in their perseverance.

  762. In their endurance,

  763. their faithfulness

  764. to Jesus.

  765. One thing

  766. that we can take away

  767. from this

  768. is the way

  769. that Jesus

  770. assesses his church.

  771. The way that he

  772. assesses the church,

  773. it's not the way

  774. that we typically

  775. assess churches nowadays.

  776. Because he's not

  777. assessing them

  778. by numbers

  779. or anything external.

  780. It's by their

  781. holding fast

  782. to his word

  783. and their faithfulness

  784. to him.

  785. It's who they are

  786. and where they turn

  787. in time of crisis.

  788. That's what defines

  789. them as a church.

  790. When external difficulties

  791. are threatening

  792. the church itself,

  793. it's what defines them

  794. that they are

  795. holding fast to Jesus.

  796. They are not

  797. looking outside.

  798. They are looking

  799. to him.

  800. Jesus sees this

  801. and he commends

  802. them for it.

  803. Now what were

  804. the external difficulties

  805. that they were facing?

  806. He says in verse 9

  807. that there were those

  808. of the synagogue

  809. of Satan.

  810. Those who say

  811. they are Jews

  812. but are not.

  813. They lie,

  814. Jesus says.

  815. These are sharp

  816. piercing words

  817. from Christ.

  818. Much like the church

  819. in Smyrna

  820. in Revelation chapter 2,

    Revelation 2 chapter mention

  821. there's another church

  822. that has no rebuke there.

  823. There Jesus only has

  824. commendation for them.

  825. He has encouragement

  826. for them.

  827. In Smyrna,

  828. they were facing

  829. hostility from the

  830. Jewish community

  831. there as well.

  832. In Philadelphia,

  833. they are facing

  834. the same kind

  835. of persecution

  836. from those

  837. who are ethnically

  838. Jewish

  839. but Jesus says

  840. morally and spiritually

  841. they are not Jewish.

  842. What does he say

  843. that they are?

  844. He says they're

  845. satanic.

  846. Those who oppose

  847. and act in hostility

  848. against Christ's church

  849. are acting satanically

  850. whether through deception

  851. as Jesus talks about here.

  852. They say they are Jews

  853. and are not.

  854. They lie about it

  855. or as in violence.

  856. That was in the case

  857. in Smyrna.

  858. They were violently

  859. persecuting the church

  860. there.

  861. Here in Philadelphia,

  862. they are persecuting

  863. the church

  864. through deception.

  865. So it continues

  866. in our day as well.

  867. It may not be

  868. the synagogue of Satan

  869. that we are facing

  870. in 2021

  871. but the same

  872. deceptive hostility

  873. is prevalent

  874. down through the ages

  875. as an attack

  876. against the church.

  877. We should not be

  878. surprised by this.

  879. The Bible talks about,

  880. the New Testament talks about

  881. that the whole world

  882. lies in the power

  883. of the evil one,

  884. 1 John 5.

  885. The apostle Paul,

  886. of course,

  887. said in 2 Corinthians 4

  888. that the God

  889. of this age

  890. has blinded

  891. the minds

  892. of unbelievers

  893. to keep them

  894. from seeing

  895. the light

  896. of the gospel

  897. of the glory

  898. of Christ.

  899. The God of this age,

  900. Satan himself.

  901. And so for us,

  902. we live

  903. in a relatively

  904. free society.

  905. We don't face,

  906. as of now,

  907. the violent persecution

  908. as much as we face

  909. an attack

  910. on the truth,

  911. whether that be

  912. on the outside

  913. or as Jesus

  914. makes clear

  915. in Revelation 2

  916. and 3,

  917. all these addresses

  918. to the churches,

  919. there's also attack

  920. that happens

  921. within the church

  922. as well,

  923. outside or inside.

  924. The early church

  925. there was facing

  926. contamination

  927. of false teaching,

  928. sexual compromise,

  929. immorality.

  930. They were facing

  931. people bringing

  932. in the idols

  933. and ideologies

  934. of the surrounding culture.

  935. They were trying

  936. to mix all these things

  937. with Christ's teaching

  938. and authority,

  939. syncretism.

  940. They were trying

  941. to mix these things.

  942. And that is what

  943. had put the church

  944. at the first century

  945. in such a perilous position.

  946. Five out of the seven churches

  947. that Jesus addresses,

  948. they are rebuked by him.

  949. They are warned

  950. that if they don't repent,

  951. Jesus will come

  952. in judgment on them.

  953. In Ephesus,

  954. it was their neglecting

  955. the truth

  956. that above all else,

  957. Christ calls us

  958. to embrace him,

  959. to love him,

  960. allowing that love

  961. to then in turn

  962. affect how we love

  963. one another,

  964. how we treat one another

  965. in the church.

  966. Or in Sardis,

  967. in Sardis,

  968. Jesus said,

  969. your exterior,

  970. how you present yourself,

  971. it doesn't matter at all

  972. when inside

  973. you are dead to me.

  974. When you have forgotten

  975. what you have received

  976. and what you have heard,

  977. outwardly you may appear

  978. beautiful,

  979. but inwardly you are full

  980. of spiritual death

  981. and decay.

  982. Jesus to that church

  983. said,

  984. wake up.

  985. The call is for you

  986. to wake up,

  987. to hear my voice,

  988. to hear my voice of truth

  989. and to repent.

  990. I am the one

  991. who knows the heart

  992. and the mind,

  993. Jesus says.

  994. I see you, church.

  995. I know what's there.

  996. Wake up

  997. and repent.

  998. This church,

  999. he talks about

  1000. strengthening what remains.

  1001. Strengthening what remains.

  1002. You're in the church.

  1003. You hear the voice

  1004. of his word.

  1005. The call to respond

  1006. with repentance

  1007. and faith is there.

  1008. Respond,

  1009. O church,

  1010. hear.

  1011. What we gather,

  1012. brothers and sisters,

  1013. by examining

  1014. what our Lord says

  1015. to his church

1016. is that we cannot afford

  1017. to be passive

  1018. in our faith,

1019. nor can we be neglectful

  1020. of the truth

  1021. that we have received

  1022. from Jesus.

  1023. Like Smyrna,

  1024. we are called

  1025. to be faithful,

  1026. faithful even unto death.

  1027. We are called,

  1028. as he says here

  1029. to Philadelphia,

  1030. to hold fast

  1031. to the truth,

  1032. even when spiritual

  1033. forces rage

  1034. and they combat

  1035. against that truth.

  1036. I want to say

  1037. that as a pastor,

  1038. I feel the weightiness

  1039. of these calls.

  1040. These calls

  1041. in that not only

  1042. am I called

  1043. to deliver the message,

1044. but I also am charged

  1045. with setting the example.

  1046. I'm called to be

1047. out front leading the way.

  1048. And to be honest

  1049. with you,

  1050. it's a heavy task.

  1051. It's a heavy task.

1052. I know my own heart.

1053. I know my own struggles,

  1054. my own failures,

1055. not only as a man,

  1056. but as a husband,

  1057. as a father,

  1058. as a friend,

  1059. as a brother,

  1060. and as a pastor.

1061. And there have been times

  1062. when the shame

  1063. in my life

  1064. has been so overwhelming,

  1065. so suffocating,

1066. that all I want to do

1067. is crawl under a rock

  1068. and hide,

  1069. believing that the world

1070. would be a better place

  1071. without me.

1072. I go full George Bailey.

  1073. And without this word,

  1074. friends,

  1075. without this Jesus,

1076. who is holy and true,

  1077. who holds the keys

  1078. to God's household,

  1079. who holds the key

1080. to all of redemptive history,

  1081. who opens the door,

  1082. and you know who

1083. he opens the door for?

  1084. For the weary

  1085. and the shame-filled

  1086. like me,

  1087. without this,

  1088. I would be lost.

  1089. All hope,

  1090. all hope

  1091. would be gone.

1092. But what has been so rich

1093. and so timely for me

  1094. during this season

  1095. of hard providence

1096. that I've been going through

  1097. are these promises

  1098. that Jesus has

  1099. to his church

  1100. for those who are

  1101. undergoing trials

  1102. and difficulties,

  1103. being reminded

1104. that it's our Lord Jesus,

  1105. brothers and sisters,

  1106. who continues to promise,

  1107. promise to his people,

1108. that the day is coming

  1109. when disappointment,

  1110. grief,

1111. and fear will be gone,

1112. that sorrow will be forgotten,

  1113. that love's purest joys

  1114. will be restored,

  1115. when change and tears

  1116. are passed

1117. and all saved and blessed

1118. we shall meet at last.

1119. That is who Jesus is.

1120. And even to his church

  1121. here in Philadelphia,

  1122. he talks about acting

  1123. in such a way

  1124. that will be undeniable.

  1125. He's going to act

  1126. on their behalf.

1127. And he talks about that

  1128. in verses 9 through 10.

  1129. He talks about

1130. that he's going to make

  1131. those that are

1132. of the synagogue of Satan

  1133. come down

1134. and bow before their feet

  1135. that they will learn

1136. that I have loved you

1137. and that he will keep them

1138. from the hour of trial

  1139. that is coming

  1140. on the whole earth

  1141. to try those

1142. who dwell on the earth.

  1143. He talks about

  1144. those that are

1145. of the synagogue of Satan

  1146. and this is

  1147. an incredible picture

  1148. because when he says

1149. that he holds open the door

1150. and no one is able to shut

  1151. and he shuts

1152. and no one is able to open,

  1153. Jesus is saying,

  1154. friends,

1155. that he has the authority

  1156. to bring even

  1157. the most heinous,

1158. even the most blasphemous enemies

  1159. and bring them

  1160. into his house

1161. as those who now know him

  1162. and know his love

  1163. for his people.

  1164. What an encouragement

  1165. that is for us

  1166. knowing the power

  1167. and the grace

  1168. of Jesus.

  1169. There is nothing

  1170. too heinous.

  1171. There is nothing

  1172. too dirty.

  1173. There is nothing

  1174. too shameful.

  1175. There is no one

  1176. too dirty

  1177. or too shameful

  1178. for him.

  1179. Even those

  1180. that he called

  1181. part of Satan's domain.

  1182. Christ is able

  1183. to save

  1184. to the uttermost

  1185. no matter,

  1186. no matter the sin.

  1187. And the second thing

  1188. that he promises

  1189. to his church

  1190. in Philadelphia

  1191. is that he will

  1192. protect them

1193. from the hour of trial

  1194. that is coming upon

  1195. those who dwell

  1196. on the earth.

  1197. Now the thing

1198. I want to just point out

  1199. to you

  1200. is keeping in mind

  1201. that Jesus is addressing

  1202. a very specific church

  1203. at this time.

  1204. I do not believe

  1205. that he is talking

  1206. about a period

  1207. of tribulation

  1208. that they themselves

  1209. would not experience.

  1210. That doesn't fit

  1211. the context

1212. of what he's saying here.

  1213. Rather,

  1214. what Jesus is saying

  1215. is a principle

  1216. that holds true,

  1217. that rings true

  1218. for the church

  1219. down through the ages

  1220. all the way

  1221. to the end

  1222. of time.

  1223. And that is

  1224. that for those

1225. who hold fast to him

  1226. during trials

  1227. and tribulations,

  1228. he promises

  1229. to provide the strength,

  1230. the supernatural strength

  1231. and presence

  1232. that they will need

  1233. to endure that.

  1234. The world is filled

  1235. with tribulation.

  1236. You and I,

  1237. we cannot avoid it.

  1238. But Jesus provides

1239. what no one else can,

  1240. spiritual endurance

  1241. and ultimately

  1242. the victory

  1243. that comes with him.

  1244. And he says that

1245. in verse 11 and following.

  1246. He says,

  1247. I am coming soon.

1248. Hold fast to what you have

  1249. that no one

  1250. may seize your crown.

  1251. The one who conquers,

  1252. I will make him

1253. a pillar in the temple

  1254. of my God,

  1255. he says.

1256. To the one who conquers,

1257. by holding fast to me,

  1258. he says,

1259. there is a place for you.

1260. There is a name for you.

  1261. And it's my God,

  1262. Jesus says.

  1263. It is a place

  1264. that my God

  1265. is preparing for you.

  1266. It is a name

  1267. that my God

  1268. has written on you.

  1269. And Jesus says

1270. that I will make him,

  1271. I will make him

  1272. the one who endures.

  1273. I will make him

  1274. a member.

  1275. I will make him

  1276. a partaker

  1277. in the city

  1278. that is coming down

  1279. from heaven.

  1280. The city that is

  1281. prepared for you.

  1282. So all of that,

  1283. all of that

  1284. is for you,

  1285. Cheyenne Mountain.

1286. For you who hold fast

  1287. even amid trials

  1288. and afflictions

  1289. in this life.

1290. The one who is true

  1291. and faithful.

1292. The one who is holy.

  1293. Who is the fulfillment

  1294. of all of God's

  1295. covenant promises.

  1296. He holds the door

  1297. open to this day,

  1298. to this very day.

  1299. And Jesus does this,

  1300. friends,

  1301. because he ultimately

  1302. took on the form

1303. of a servant for us.

  1304. He was obedient

  1305. to his father

  1306. even unto death.

  1307. He faced trial

  1308. after trial.

  1309. He faced trial

  1310. from Satan.

  1311. He faced trial

  1312. from the unbelieving world

  1313. and the betrayal,

  1314. the slander,

  1315. the lies,

  1316. the injustice

  1317. that we afflict

  1318. on one another.

  1319. Jesus did all this

  1320. who for the joy

1321. that was set before him,

  1322. he endured it all.

  1323. He endured the cross.

  1324. He endured the shame.

  1325. He endured the rejection,

  1326. the ridicule,

  1327. the malice,

  1328. the betrayal,

  1329. the abandonment,

  1330. the loneliness,

1331. the wrath of his father.

  1332. He did all that

1333. knowing that for the joy

1334. that was set before him,

1335. he would bring you and I

  1336. into his kingdom.

  1337. And he calls,

1338. he calls you and I

1339. to follow in his footsteps

  1340. by embracing

  1341. and holding fast

  1342. to him

  1343. who promises

  1344. by his word

  1345. and spirit

  1346. through the ministry

  1347. of his church

  1348. that we will overcome.

  1349. There is no one

  1350. like Jesus.

  1351. There is no one

  1352. like him.

  1353. So the call

  1354. goes out to you,

  1355. church,

  1356. to hold fast,

  1357. to hold fast.

  1358. He who has ears,

  1359. let him hear

  1360. what the spirit

  1361. says to the church.

  1362. By his endurance,

  1363. we will conquer.

  1364. Thanks be to him.

  1365. Let's pray.

  1366. Lord,

  1367. we thank you

  1368. for this word.

  1369. We thank you

  1370. for this time.

  1371. Jesus,

  1372. we thank you

  1373. that even though

  1374. we in the eyes

  1375. of the world

  1376. as a church

  1377. may have little power

  1378. in your eyes,

  1379. Lord,

1380. help us to be faithful.

1381. Help us to hold fast.

1382. Help us by your spirit,

  1383. Lord,

  1384. to endure

  1385. what we must.

1386. We ask that you would,

  1387. Lord,

  1388. convert us,

1389. convert us out of our

  1390. worldly way of thinking.

  1391. Convert us.

  1392. If we,

  1393. Lord,

1394. if we do not see you

  1395. as you are,

1396. as the holy and true one,

1397. as the one who holds the keys,

  1398. keys to heaven,

1399. keys to the kingdom of God,

  1400. that no one,

1401. no one is able to shut

  1402. what you have established

1403. and no one is able to open

  1404. what you have shut.

  1405. You have ultimate authority,

  1406. Lord Jesus,

  1407. and we pray that

1408. as we come to your table now,

  1409. you would remind us

  1410. of how you set

  1411. your authority aside

  1412. from heaven

  1413. to come down

  1414. and to serve us

  1415. in this incredible way.

  1416. Lord,

1417. help us to eat and drink

  1418. in faith

  1419. as we go

  1420. to your table now.

1421. And it's in your name

  1422. we pray.

  1423. Amen.
