  1. a group of women who traveled with him who apparently had financial means.

  2. And they supported him, it tells us, I think it's in verse 3 of Luke chapter 8,

    Luke 8 chapter mention

  3. they supported him out of those means.

  4. So the Bible highlights for us that women played a special role in Jesus' ministry.

  5. One of their roles was supporting him financially.

  6. That, by the way, is part of the reason we believe it's appropriate for missionaries

  7. when they're going out to ask for support.

  8. So Jesus was a real man. He needed money just like you need money.

  9. Things didn't appear for him out of thin air during his ministry,

  10. but instead he had people who support him,

  11. just like we continue now 2,000 years later to support those who go out in ministry.

  12. With that, we're going to turn to our passage today.

  13. We're in Mark chapter 1, verses 21 through 28,

    Mark 1:21–28

  14. and we're going to continue to ask our two questions that we've been looking at,

  15. which is, who is Jesus and how do we respond to him?

  16. You'll notice in this passage, again, that these are not questions

  17. that I pulled out of thin air,

  18. but they are actually the questions that the gospel of Mark itself is asking.

  19. In this passage, we're going to hear people say or ask,

  20. who is this?

  21. And so the questions that the audience of Mark is asking

  22. are the same ones that we're asking.

  23. With that, we're going to jump right in here.

  24. We're in Mark chapter 1, starting at verse 21.

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  25. You can turn with me in your Bible.

  26. You can turn on your phone.

  27. You can turn in your worship guide near the inn.

  28. No matter where you go, remember that this is God's word.

  29. God tells us that his word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path,

  30. which means that God has not left us to stumble alone in the dark,

  31. but instead he's given us his word to show us the way to go.

  32. And so that's why we read now, starting at verse 21.

  33. And they went into Capernaum, and immediately on the Sabbath,

  34. he entered the synagogue and was teaching.

  35. And they were astonished at his teaching,

  36. for he taught them as one who had authority and not as the scribes.

  37. And immediately was in their synagogue a man with an unclean spirit.

  38. And he cried out,

  39. What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth?

  40. Have you come to destroy us?

  41. I know who you are, the Holy One of God.

  42. But Jesus rebuked him, saying,

  43. Be silent and come out of him.

  44. And the unclean spirit, convulsing him and crying out with a loud voice,

  45. came out of him.

  46. And they were all amazed,

  47. so that they questioned among themselves, saying,

  48. What is this?

  49. A new teaching with authority.

  50. He commands even the unclean spirits,

  51. and they obey him.

  52. And at once, his fame spread everywhere,

  53. throughout all the surrounding region of Galilee.

  54. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  55. Let's pray.

  56. Our Father in heaven, we thank you that you haven't left us alone,

  57. but you have given us your Son in the flesh,

  58. and you've given us this gospel that we would learn about him,

  59. that we would know him, and that we would respond to him.

  60. We ask that you would help us do that this morning,

  61. that you would show us more clearly who Jesus is,

  62. in his glory and his beauty,

  63. and you would also show us more clearly how we can love him,

  64. and follow him, and serve him.

  65. We thank you that that love and that service

  66. doesn't earn anything from you,

  67. and it doesn't prove anything to you,

  68. but instead, it is only by your grace.

  69. And so we ask these things in Jesus' name.

  70. Amen.

  71. Amen.

  72. When we began our journey in the Gospel of Mark,

  73. you may remember we were in the desert for quite some time.

  74. For verses 1 through 13,

  75. there was John the Baptist who was out in the desert,

  76. and then there was Jesus who was out in the desert,

  77. and we made this transition from the desert to Galilee,

  78. which would have been in the northwest of Israel,

  79. in verses 14 and 15,

  80. when Jesus begins his earthly ministry.

  81. So Jesus begins preaching in Galilee,

  82. and then we saw,

  83. last time we were in Mark,

  84. verses 16 through 20,

  85. he continues calling his disciples to him,

  86. also, remember, by the Sea of Galilee,

  87. which is this body of water in the north of Israel.

  88. That's why we have the region of Galilee.

  89. It's next to the Sea of Galilee.

  90. Jesus is continuing that here in this passage.

  91. We see in verse 21,

  92. it tells us,

  93. they went into Capernaum.

  94. So Jesus has called these men to himself,

  95. and now they're traveling as a group.

  96. I mentioned last time that Jesus is with us.

  97. He's calling these people,

  98. and he remains with them.

  99. He's not calling them to do it alone.

  100. That's the pattern we see here.

  101. Jesus is traveling with them into Capernaum,

  102. and he's in the same area that he was before.

  103. So if you think about the Sea of Galilee,

  104. Capernaum would be,

  105. well, the way I'm looking at it,

  106. northwest for you would be right here.

  107. So he's right along the sea.

  108. Capernaum would have been and is still a sea town.

  109. It is right on the water.

  110. If you go there today,

  111. you can see the 4th century synagogue,

  112. and you can walk from there right to the seashore.

  113. It's right there.

  114. It's a port town.

  115. It doesn't surprise us then that Jesus calls fishermen

  116. and immediately goes to this area,

  117. and we see the first thing he's doing here

  118. is he's going in to the synagogue.

  119. It tells us immediately on the Sabbath,

  120. he entered the synagogue and was teaching.

  121. Now the tradition then would not have been

  122. that someone barged into a synagogue

  123. and just started giving a lecture.

  124. In the same way,

  125. you would not expect someone

  126. to simply walk into Cheyenne Mountain

  127. on a Sunday morning

  128. and just take over the pulpit.

  129. So our assumption here is,

  130. most likely,

  131. Jesus had been working in Capernaum for some time.

  132. He was well known,

  133. and he was invited to speak in this synagogue.

  134. In fact, if you're familiar with Jesus' ministry,

  135. you'll know that Capernaum

  136. was the city that was called

  137. his base of operations

  138. during his ministry in Galilee.

  139. So Jesus is constantly coming to Capernaum,

  140. returning there.

  141. We'll find out next week,

  142. this is where Andrew and Simon live.

  143. So this is part of his home base here in Capernaum.

  144. And apparently he's become well known enough

  145. that he's invited to teach in the synagogue.

  146. And this is where we find out

  147. that there's something different about Jesus.

  148. By the way,

  149. I forgot to tell you at the beginning,

  150. the two things we're looking at,

  151. you'll see the word authority

  152. is repeated in this passage.

  153. We're gonna see Jesus' authority in teaching,

  154. and we're gonna see Jesus' authority over evil.

  155. Jesus' authority in teaching,

  156. Jesus' authority over evil.

  157. The first thing we see in this scene in the synagogue

  158. as Jesus is invited to teach

  159. is his authority in teaching.

  160. By the way, Capernaum was a large city,

  161. and so we would expect this

  162. to most likely be a large crowd.

  163. There would have been a lot more people

  164. listening to Jesus

  165. than we have right here

  166. in this sanctuary this morning.

  167. And we're told the very first thing

  168. that's important as Jesus is teaching,

  169. verse 22,

  170. they were astonished,

  171. for he taught them as one who had authority

  172. and not as the scribes.

  173. In other words,

  174. Jesus is teaching in a way

  175. that's different than anything

  176. they've ever experienced before,

  177. and this power,

  178. this authority,

  179. is something that comes across

  180. probably in Jesus' content

  181. and also in Jesus' call.

  182. It comes across his authority

  183. in the content and the call.

  184. We would expect that

  185. when the scribes were teaching,

  186. they may have been quoting this person

  187. or that person,

  188. giving different ideas or theories

  189. about what the texts mean.

  190. Jesus has no need to do that.

  191. He can teach directly from the scriptures

  192. without referring to anyone else,

  193. knowing that he himself is the authority,

  194. giving the most direct

  195. and true application

  196. and preaching of these texts.

  197. Jesus is able to speak

  198. as someone who knows

  199. what he's talking about,

  200. not because he studied it,

  201. but because he knows it

  202. intimately and deeply and personally.

  203. He is not referring to other authorities

  204. because he is the authority.

  205. Jesus is not standing up

  206. in front of them and saying,

  207. well, on the one hand,

  208. this passage might mean this.

  209. On the other hand,

  210. it might mean that.

  211. You know, scholars disagree,

  212. but you know,

  213. isn't it interesting

  214. that we see this here in this text?

  215. No, Jesus is speaking clearly

  216. and directly to these people

  217. in a way that hits them back

  218. on their heels,

  219. a way they're not expected,

  220. a way they're not used to,

  221. accustomed to

  222. from listening to the scribes teach.

  223. Jesus is his own source.

  224. He doesn't need to quote anyone else.

  225. And so there's this freshness,

  226. there's this directness

  227. that comes with his teaching

  228. that they're not used to.

  229. We're not told the content

  230. of his teaching here,

  231. but we can guess

  232. because remember in verses 14 and 15,

  233. we're told the general summary

  234. of what Jesus was teaching.

  235. He's teaching that the kingdom of God

  236. has come near

  237. and he's calling people

  238. to repent and believe.

  239. And so that's likely also

  240. what Jesus is teaching here

  241. as he's talking in the synagogue.

  242. He's likely telling them

  243. the kingdom of God is near,

  244. it's at hand,

  245. repent and believe.

  246. That would have been

  247. the other part of this

  248. that would have astonished them.

  249. And Jesus' teaching with authority

  250. would have included

  251. his call here to repentance.

  252. And that's what makes sense, right?

  253. When we think of authorities,

  254. they're people who have power,

  255. who have control.

  256. They're people who are going

  257. to tell us what to do.

  258. And so it's not just here

  259. that Jesus is speaking

  260. as his own source.

  261. He is speaking as someone

  262. who is calling people

  263. to act and respond.

  264. Going along, right,

  265. with our questions.

  266. Who is Jesus?

  267. How do we respond to him?

  268. And so when it tells us

  269. in verse 22

  270. that they were astonished

  271. at his teaching,

  272. what it is not saying

  273. is that they were so impressed

  274. with Jesus

  275. because he gave

  276. such a fascinating TED talk.

  277. Okay?

  278. They were not astonished

  279. in the sense that

  280. Jesus was just telling them

  281. things that were so interesting

  282. and so fascinating,

  283. although he may have.

  284. They were astonished

  285. in, as I mentioned,

  286. a being pushed back

  287. on their heels

  288. sort of way

  289. that this is a man

  290. who's impressive

  291. and scary

  292. and unnerving

  293. and unsettling.

  294. He is speaking to them.

  295. He's probably speaking

  296. directly to their hearts

  297. and their consciences.

  298. He's exposing

  299. what's going on

  300. in their lives.

  301. He's calling them

  302. to change

  303. and repent

  304. and believe.

  305. And we also,

  306. of course,

  307. know not just the fact

  308. that that might be scary

  309. and unnerving.

  310. We know the joy, right,

  311. of watching someone

  312. who can speak authoritatively

  313. about something.

  314. There's a reason

  315. that there are some

  316. videos on YouTube

  317. that have millions

  318. of views

  319. because the speaker

  320. is able to speak

  321. so clearly

  322. and directly

  323. to that situation.

  324. Same is true of Jesus.

  325. He is speaking here

  326. with authority.

  327. And that gets to

  328. our challenge

  329. as people living today

  330. because we live

  331. in a culture now

  332. where we have

  333. a fundamental loss

  334. of trust

  335. in people

  336. who have authority.

  337. And if we didn't

  338. have it before,

  339. we most likely

  340. have it now, right?

  341. We've lived

  342. over the last couple

  343. years with COVID.

  344. We've heard

  345. so-called experts

  346. after the fact

  347. telling us

  348. that they lied

  349. to us about certain things.

  350. We've had new facts

  351. come out.

  352. People maybe

  353. were very sincere

  354. and earnest.

  355. They weren't trying

  356. to lie to anyone.

  357. But we found out later

  358. that what we were told

  359. was wrong, right?

  360. I'm not saying

  361. everything was wrong,

  362. but I am saying

  363. that when it comes

  364. to our leaders

  365. and our politicians,

  366. whether on the right

  367. or the left,

  368. we as people

  369. are increasingly

  370. losing trust

  371. and confidence.

  372. We are losing

  373. the ability

  374. to look at someone

  375. and say,

  376. man, I really believe

  377. that person

  378. is telling me

  379. the truth.

  380. There's one pastor

  381. a couple weeks ago

  382. who wrote this.

  383. Authority is linked

  384. to the control

  385. of information

  386. and no one

  387. is in control

  388. of information anymore.

  389. There is a vacuum

  390. of leadership

  391. and the difficulty

  392. is that nothing

  393. has arisen

  394. to fill the vacuum.

  395. The temptation

  396. for American Christians

  397. is to think

  398. that our country

  399. is falling apart.

  400. Actually, no.

  401. It is the world

  402. that is falling apart.

  403. This is a global

  404. crisis of authority.

  405. Brothers and sisters,

  406. I do not blame you

  407. for losing trust

  408. in the people

  409. who speak

  410. in the world around us.

  411. I don't blame you,

  412. as many of you

  413. have told me,

  414. for stopping

  415. to watch the news,

  416. stopping listening

  417. and watching

  418. because you don't

  419. believe any of it anymore.

  420. Or you know

  421. some of it's true,

  422. you just don't know

  423. what to believe

  424. and what not to believe.

  425. As we come

  426. to this passage,

  427. the point is this.

  428. You may stop

  429. watching the news.

  430. Don't stop

  431. listening to Jesus.

  432. You may stop

  433. listening to the news.

  434. Don't stop

  435. listening to Jesus.

  436. Jesus.

  437. He is still

  438. the one

  439. who tells us

  440. words that are true

  441. in a world

  442. filled with words

  443. that are not true.

  444. Jesus is still

  445. the one

  446. that we can trust.

  447. Jesus doesn't lie

  448. to us.

  449. Jesus doesn't change

  450. his story

  451. from year to year.

  452. Jesus doesn't

  453. gaslight us.

  454. He doesn't say

  455. one thing

  456. and then say

  457. another thing

  458. a month later

  459. and pretends

  460. he never said

  461. the first thing.

  462. and if you think

  463. about the people

  464. that lead

  465. our world today

  466. for many of them

  467. the story

  468. is always changing.

  469. It doesn't take long

  470. before the narrative

  471. shifts.

  472. It doesn't take long

  473. before there's new data

  474. and new information.

  475. When we look

  476. at our Lord and Savior

  477. Jesus Christ

  478. we can look back

  479. at 2,000 years

  480. of the testing

  481. of his words

  482. and know even more

  483. than the people

  484. who received these

  485. for the first time

  486. that he is true

  487. and reliable.

  488. He is a real

  489. and true

  490. and trustworthy

  491. authority.

  492. The audience here

  493. knew that Jesus

  494. was telling them

  495. the truth.

  496. How much more

  497. for us

  498. 2,000 years later?

  499. And so the point

  500. is this

  501. Jesus

  502. still speaks

  503. with authority

  504. on September

  505. the 12th

  506. 2021.

  507. He is still

  508. the one

  509. in control

  510. and in charge.

  511. And that authority

  512. is not just

  513. his trustworthiness

  514. and his reliableness.

  515. It's also the fact

  516. that he is calling here

  517. for a response.

  518. Authority demands

  519. a response.

  520. That's part

  521. of the definition

  522. that someone

  523. who has authority

  524. is someone

  525. who's in control.

  526. There's someone

  527. who's able to tell us

  528. what to do.

  529. In other words

  530. as we look at

  531. Mark chapter 1

    Mark 1 chapter mention

  532. we are not engaging

  533. together in a book club.

  534. We're not going to make

  535. just fascinating

  536. observations

  537. and talk

  538. and then walk away

  539. as if nothing

  540. had happened.

  541. No, this is a book

  542. that's meant to be

  543. believed

  544. and understood

  545. and obeyed.

  546. Jesus' authority

  547. is not just

  548. in his reliableness

  549. and his trustworthiness

  550. but also

  551. that he calls us

  552. to do

  553. what he's commanded

  554. us to do.

  555. That his commands

  556. are good

  557. and right

  558. and true.

  559. His teaching

  560. requires

  561. a response.

  562. Jesus is not

  563. sharing

  564. interesting ideas

  565. here.

  566. He is proclaiming

  567. and calling

  568. and telling

  569. and commanding.

  570. That's what it means

  571. for him to speak

  572. and teach

  573. with an authority.

  574. And so we have to

  575. answer and listen

  576. to him.

  577. We have to hear him

  578. and respond to him.

  579. Kids,

  580. you know

  581. the difference

  582. between

  583. your parents

  584. and other adults.

  585. You need to obey

  586. your parents.

  587. That does not mean

  588. you're required

  589. to obey

  590. all adults

  591. everywhere,

  592. right?

  593. That's ridiculous.

  594. When I was growing up,

  595. my mom spent

  596. a lot of time

  597. training us

  598. to correctly

  599. respond to

  600. stranger danger

  601. and one of the

  602. things she taught us

  603. is that if we were

  604. ever at a store

  605. and some adult

  606. separated us

  607. from our parents

  608. and was giving us

  609. a hard time,

  610. what we needed to do

  611. was to make a scene

  612. and here's how

  613. we were supposed

  614. to make a scene.

  615. We would say

  616. very loudly,

  617. he is not

  618. my dad

  619. or she

  620. is not

  621. my mom

  622. which is our

  623. way of letting

  624. everyone know

  625. this person

  626. actually has

  627. no authority

  628. over me,

  629. right?

  630. This person

  631. might be an adult,

  632. they might look

  633. like someone

  634. who is my parent,

  635. I want to make

  636. sure all of you

  637. know that they

  638. are not.

  639. And at that point

  640. the idea was

  641. that people would

  642. realize that

  643. something wrong

  644. was going on

  645. and other adults

  646. would come

  647. to help us,

  648. right?

  649. There's this

  650. distinction

  651. between those

  652. who have

  653. true authority

  654. and false

  655. authority.

  656. Now I want you

  657. to imagine

  658. for a second

  659. that I decided

  660. I didn't do

  661. this by the way

  662. but I want you

  663. to imagine

  664. that I was

  665. a devious kid

  666. and I decided

  667. to flip the tables.

  668. What if I decided

  669. in front of everyone

  670. to yell at my mom

  671. this is not my mother

  672. or to yell

  673. at my dad

  674. he is not my father?

  675. Chaos,

  676. right?

  677. The tables

  678. would be turned

  679. in the worst

  680. sort of way.

  681. Brothers and sisters

  682. when we say

  683. that Jesus

  684. is our authority

  685. we are saying

  686. that we have

  687. to answer to him.

  688. He is

  689. actually

  690. our father.

  691. He is

  692. actually

  693. the one

  694. we have to

  695. listen to

  696. and answer

  697. and obey.

  698. When I was

  699. growing up

  700. one of the big

  701. questions

  702. that preachers

  703. like to ask

  704. was this

  705. when was

  706. the last

  707. time

  708. you stopped

  709. doing something

  710. or you

  711. started doing

  712. something

  713. because Jesus

  714. said so?

  715. When was

  716. the last

  717. time you

  718. started doing

  719. something

  720. or stopped

  721. doing something

  722. because Jesus

  723. said so?

  724. Because the

  725. Bible told you

  726. to.

  727. In other

  728. words

  729. is Jesus

  730. actually an

  731. authority

  732. in your life?

  733. When you

  734. read his

  735. words

  736. do you

  737. read them

  738. do you

  739. treat them

  740. as words

  741. of authority?

  742. Another

  743. way of

  744. asking it

  745. would be

  746. this.

  747. What do

  748. you wish

  749. that Jesus

  750. had never

  751. said?

  752. What do

  753. you wish

  754. that Jesus

  755. had never

  756. said?

  757. What are

  758. you tempted

  759. to explain

  760. away or

  761. talk your

  762. way around?

  763. There's

  764. people who

  765. have made

  766. their careers

  767. out of

  768. explaining away

  769. Jesus'

  770. words.

  771. People who

  772. have made

  773. entire

  774. ministries

  775. out of

  776. talking

  777. around

  778. what Jesus

  779. has said

  780. clearly.

  781. Maybe

  782. it's what

  783. Jesus

  784. has taught

  785. us about

  786. rich

  787. entering

  788. the

  789. kingdom.

  790. Remember

  791. Jesus

  792. says it's

  793. easier for

  794. a camel

  795. to pass

  796. through the

  797. eye of

  798. a needle

  799. than for

  800. a rich

  801. man to

  802. enter the

  803. kingdom

  804. of heaven.

  805. Maybe

  806. that's

  807. what you

  808. wish

  809. Jesus

  810. had never

  811. said.

  812. Maybe

  813. it's

  814. Jesus

  815. teaching

  816. on

  817. divorce.

  818. Maybe

  819. it's

  820. what Jesus

  821. tells us

  822. about caring

  823. for the

  824. poor.

  825. Maybe

  826. it's

  827. Jesus'

  828. words

  829. about turning

  830. the other

  831. cheek.

  832. For

  833. all of

  834. us

  835. there are

  836. our hits

  837. list,

  838. our favorite

  839. things that

  840. Jesus has

  841. said that

  842. we want

  843. to repeat

  844. over and

  845. over.

  846. And for

  847. all of

  848. us I

  849. believe if

  850. we're honest

  851. there's our

  852. ignore list.

  853. The things

  854. that Jesus

  855. has said

  856. that we'd

  857. rather not

  858. think about.

  859. That we'd

  860. like to find

  861. neat and

  862. easy explanations

  863. for that

  864. Jesus really

  865. didn't mean

  866. it.

  867. But if

  868. Jesus is

  869. the one

  870. who speaks

  871. with authority,

  872. if he's the

  873. one that we

  874. can trust,

  875. and the one

  876. that we can

  877. believe,

  878. then we

  879. respond to

  880. him by

  881. obeying him.

  882. We

  883. respond to

  884. him by

  885. listening to

  886. him.

  887. We

  888. respond to

  889. him by

  890. seeing our

  891. lives and

  892. our hearts

  893. changed in

  894. their direction.

  895. We want to

  896. be like

  897. Jesus'

  898. followers.

  899. In John

    John 6 chapter mention

  900. chapter 6,

  901. Jesus is

  902. asking the

  903. twelve.

  904. It says

  905. here in

  906. verse 67,

  907. verse 66,

  908. it tells us,

  909. many of

  910. Jesus'

  911. disciples turned

  912. back and no

  913. longer walked

  914. with him.

  915. So Jesus

  916. said to

  917. the twelve,

  918. do you

  919. want to

  920. go away

  921. as well?

  922. Simon

  923. Peter answered

  924. him,

  925. Lord,

  926. to whom

  927. shall we

  928. go?

  929. You

  930. have the

  931. words of

  932. eternal

  933. life,

  934. and we

  935. have

  936. believed

  937. and have

  938. come to

  939. know that

  940. you are

  941. the holy

  942. one of

  943. God.

  944. Brothers

  945. and sisters,

  946. that's the

  947. response of

  948. the Christian.

  949. We look at

  950. Jesus and

  951. we say,

  952. no matter

  953. what you

  954. command us

  955. to do,

  956. we know

  957. that you

  958. alone have

  959. the words

  960. of life.

  961. you're the

  962. only one

  963. who tells

  964. us what's

  965. true and

  966. only tells

  967. us what's

  968. true.

  969. You're the

  970. one we

  971. answer to

  972. and we

  973. obey.

  974. Who is

  975. Jesus?

  976. He's the

  977. one who

  978. speaks with

  979. authority.

  980. How do we

  981. respond to

  982. him?

  983. We follow

  984. him and

  985. listen to

  986. him and

  987. obey him.

  988. Now,

  989. as we only

  990. read the

  991. beginning of

  992. this passage,

  993. we might be

  994. tempted to

  995. believe that

  996. Jesus'

  997. authority was

  998. only expressed

  999. in his

  1000. words and

  1001. his rhetorical

  1002. skill.

  1003. Thankfully,

  1004. Mark doesn't

  1005. leave us

  1006. there.

  1007. As we turn

  1008. to the next

  1009. section,

  1010. we see

  1011. Jesus'

  1012. authority not

  1013. just represented

  1014. by words,

  1015. but what he's

  1016. able to do

  1017. and change.

  1018. I don't want

  1019. you to lose

  1020. the story

  1021. here.

  1022. If you're

  1023. an engaged

  1024. reader,

  1025. there's an

  1026. anxiety that's

  1027. meant to come

  1028. with this next

  1029. part of the

  1030. story.

  1031. If you're

  1032. really in it,

  1033. you should

  1034. feel something

  1035. maybe in the

  1036. pit of your

  1037. stomach.

  1038. What's

  1039. happening here

  1040. is similar

  1041. to what would

  1042. happen if I

  1043. was preaching

  1044. here on a

  1045. Sunday morning

  1046. and I want

  1047. you to

  1048. imagine that

  1049. while I'm

  1050. preaching,

  1051. someone walks

  1052. into the

  1053. sanctuary,

  1054. right, and

  1055. they just

  1056. start screaming

  1057. and yelling.

  1058. What would you

  1059. be feeling in

  1060. that instance?

  1061. Maybe you've

  1062. been to an

  1063. event where

  1064. there's a

  1065. speaker and

  1066. someone interrupts,

  1067. just walks into

  1068. the auditorium and

  1069. starts giving

  1070. their own speech.

  1071. This actually

  1072. happened to me

  1073. when I was in

  1074. college.

  1075. I was listening

  1076. to a man

  1077. give a lecture

  1078. in a very large

  1079. auditorium.

  1080. It was a special

  1081. lecture.

  1082. He was a

  1083. special guest

  1084. who had been

  1085. flown in to

  1086. speak to us

  1087. and someone

  1088. just wandered

  1089. in and started

  1090. yelling.

  1091. Now what I was

  1092. feeling in that

  1093. moment, you

  1094. might feel a

  1095. variety of

  1096. things.

  1097. Some of you

  1098. might just

  1099. feel anxious.

  1100. Some of you

  1101. might be angry.

  1102. Some of you

  1103. might be

  1104. checking to

  1105. see if you

  1106. truly were

  1107. exercising your

  1108. Second Amendment

  1109. rights this

  1110. morning.

  1111. There would be

  1112. a lot of

  1113. different things

  1114. that would go

  1115. through your

  1116. mind.

  1117. For me in

  1118. that moment,

  1119. I was thinking,

  1120. do I need to

  1121. leave this

  1122. auditorium?

  1123. Am I

  1124. about to

  1125. die?

  1126. What's going

  1127. to happen

  1128. here?

  1129. This is a

  1130. very strange

  1131. situation.

  1132. That is what

  1133. is going on

  1134. in this

  1135. passage.

  1136. There's a

  1137. complete

  1138. disruption of

  1139. Jesus'

  1140. teaching.

  1141. Let's not

  1142. downplay this.

  1143. This man is

  1144. screaming out,

  1145. verse 23,

  1146. in their

  1147. synagogue,

  1148. a man with

  1149. an unclean

  1150. spirit,

  1151. and he

  1152. cried out,

  1153. what have

  1154. you to do

  1155. with us,

  1156. Jesus of

  1157. Nazareth?

  1158. Have you

  1159. come to

  1160. destroy us?

  1161. I know

  1162. who you

  1163. are,

  1164. the Holy

  1165. One of

  1166. God.

  1167. In other

  1168. words,

  1169. he's saying,

  1170. why are

  1171. you here?

  1172. What do

  1173. you want?

  1174. One person

  1175. translates it

  1176. this way,

  1177. go away

  1178. and leave

  1179. me alone.

  1180. Jesus,

  1181. why are

  1182. you here?

  1183. We were

  1184. doing fine

  1185. before you

  1186. were the

  1187. guest preacher.

  1188. Everything

  1189. was good

  1190. before that.

  1191. But now

  1192. you are

  1193. here

  1194. disrupting

  1195. things.

  1196. What happens

  1197. next year,

  1198. it's easy

  1199. for us

  1200. to miss

  1201. as modern

  1202. readers,

  1203. but those

  1204. who were

  1205. the original

  1206. audience would

  1207. have understood

  1208. that this

  1209. demon begins

  1210. a power play

  1211. with Jesus

  1212. because there

  1213. is common

  1214. ideas about

  1215. the practice

  1216. of exorcism

  1217. during this

  1218. time.

  1219. One of the

  1220. techniques

  1221. that you

  1222. would use

  1223. if you

  1224. wanted to

  1225. gain control

  1226. over someone,

  1227. especially over

  1228. a demon,

  1229. is you would

  1230. speak their

  1231. name.

  1232. It was

  1233. really important

  1234. to know

  1235. the name

  1236. of the demon

  1237. here.

  1238. The demon

  1239. is trying

  1240. to turn

  1241. the tables

  1242. on Jesus.

  1243. He begins

  1244. a power

  1245. struggle

  1246. by saying

  1247. his name.

  1248. What do

  1249. you have

  1250. to do

  1251. with us,

  1252. Jesus of

  1253. Nazareth?

  1254. I know

  1255. who you

  1256. are.

  1257. In other

  1258. words,

  1259. I think

  1260. I may

  1261. actually be

  1262. able to

  1263. exercise

  1264. authority

  1265. and power

  1266. over you.

  1267. I'm going

  1268. to test

  1269. and see

  1270. if your

  1271. speaking

  1272. with authority

  1273. has any

  1274. match of

  1275. being able

  1276. to act

  1277. and perform

  1278. with authority.

  1279. So there's

  1280. an inversion

  1281. here.

  1282. The naming

  1283. is supposed

  1284. to come

  1285. from the

  1286. exorcist,

  1287. not from

  1288. the demon.

  1289. And bringing

  1290. in the name

  1291. is a way

  1292. of power.

  1293. And so what

  1294. comes next

  1295. is even

  1296. more surprising.

  1297. This demon

  1298. throws out

  1299. Jesus' name,

  1300. right?

  1301. What do we

  1302. expect to

  1303. happen in

  1304. reverse?

  1305. If Jesus

  1306. is a good

  1307. exorcist,

  1308. what is he

  1309. going to

  1310. do?

  1311. Jesus is

  1312. going to

  1313. say,

  1314. oh,

  1315. you think

  1316. that's a

  1317. big deal?

  1318. I know

  1319. your name.

  1320. Jesus

  1321. doesn't

  1322. say his

  1323. name.

  1324. Why?

  1325. Because

  1326. he doesn't

  1327. need to.

  1328. Jesus

  1329. doesn't

  1330. call on

  1331. any higher

  1332. power.

  1333. We're going

  1334. to see

  1335. demons

  1336. cast out

  1337. later in

  1338. the Gospel

  1339. of Mark.

  1340. By those

  1341. who follow

  1342. Jesus,

  1343. they're going

  1344. to do

  1345. it in

  1346. Jesus'

  1347. name.

  1348. Jesus

  1349. doesn't

  1350. call on

  1351. any name.

  1352. Jesus

  1353. doesn't

  1354. use,

  1355. as we

  1356. might expect

  1357. if some

  1358. people have

  1359. pointed out,

  1360. any incantation

  1361. or spell.

  1362. In other

  1363. words,

  1364. Jesus ignores

  1365. all the

  1366. rules.

  1367. He does

  1368. nothing that's

  1369. supposed to

  1370. give him

  1371. an advantage.

  1372. Jesus does

  1373. nothing that's

  1374. supposed to

  1375. work because

  1376. Jesus doesn't

  1377. need to.

  1378. That is how

  1379. powerful Jesus

  1380. is in this

  1381. moment.

  1382. Jesus doesn't

  1383. appeal or

  1384. call to a

  1385. higher power

  1386. because Jesus

  1387. is the

  1388. higher power.

  1389. Jesus doesn't

  1390. need to use

  1391. anyone's name

  1392. because it is

  1393. his name that

  1394. they need to

  1395. tremble at.

  1396. Jesus instead

  1397. simply speaks

  1398. with and by

  1399. his own

  1400. authority.

  1401. Be quiet

  1402. and leave.

  1403. This is in the

  1404. same vein of

  1405. what I've told

  1406. you before.

  1407. I used to say

  1408. to some of my

  1409. students,

  1410. it's time for

  1411. you to shut

  1412. up and sit

  1413. down.

  1414. So verse 25,

  1415. Jesus rebuked

  1416. him.

  1417. Be silent

  1418. and come

  1419. out of

  1420. him.

  1421. What does

  1422. this spirit

  1423. do?

  1424. Well, 26,

  1425. he's silent

  1426. and comes

  1427. out of

  1428. him.

  1429. No matter

  1430. what you've

  1431. seen, no

  1432. matter what

  1433. these people

  1434. in this

  1435. passage have

  1436. seen, they

  1437. have not

  1438. seen power

  1439. like this.

  1440. They have

  1441. not known

  1442. about power

  1443. like this.

  1444. Maybe they've

  1445. heard of

  1446. great exorcists

  1447. who have the

  1448. right incantation

  1449. or spell

  1450. or name.

  1451. They're able

  1452. to get the

  1453. knowledge.

  1454. They're able

  1455. to find out

  1456. the identity

  1457. of the demons

  1458. so they can

  1459. gain power.

  1460. Jesus skips

  1461. all of those

  1462. things because

  1463. Jesus has a

  1464. power and

  1465. authority over

  1466. evil and

  1467. demonic forces

  1468. that has never

  1469. been seen

  1470. before.

  1471. Jesus has a

  1472. power over

  1473. evil and

  1474. demonic forces

  1475. like nothing

  1476. else.

  1477. Brothers

  1478. and sisters,

  1479. the same is

  1480. true even

  1481. now today.

  1482. Jesus is

  1483. the one

  1484. with the

  1485. great and

  1486. greatest

  1487. power over

  1488. evil.

  1489. He is the

  1490. one and

  1491. the only

  1492. one who

  1493. is able

  1494. to put

  1495. an end

  1496. to death

  1497. and evil

  1498. forever,

  1499. once and

  1500. for all.

  1501. The king

  1502. is on

  1503. the move.

  1504. We are

  1505. beginning to

  1506. finally see

  1507. how powerful

  1508. this king

  1509. is, how

  1510. much he

  1511. is actually

  1512. able to

  1513. do.

  1514. One man

  1515. says this,

  1516. the coming

  1517. of the king

  1518. and the

  1519. inauguration

  1520. of his

  1521. kingdom

  1522. implied the

  1523. destruction

  1524. and end

  1525. of the

  1526. kingdom

  1527. of darkness.

  1528. Jesus here

  1529. is showing

  1530. that he

  1531. has come

  1532. to bring

  1533. evil to

  1534. an end

  1535. once and

  1536. for all.

  1537. He is

  1538. not an

  1539. exorcist,

  1540. he is

  1541. the

  1542. exorcist.

  1543. He is

  1544. not a

  1545. power,

  1546. he is

  1547. the power.

  1548. power.

  1549. He is

  1550. the power

  1551. that doesn't

  1552. need any

  1553. tricks in

  1554. his bag

  1555. because his

  1556. word is

  1557. enough.

  1558. And so

  1559. that is why

  1560. these people

  1561. are able to

  1562. say,

  1563. what is

  1564. this,

  1565. a new

  1566. teaching

  1567. with

  1568. authority?

  1569. For us,

  1570. we respond

  1571. to Jesus

  1572. by recognizing

  1573. how powerful

  1574. he is.

  1575. We recognize

  1576. that as we

  1577. submit to

  1578. him and

  1579. obey him.

  1580. we recognize

  1581. that as we

  1582. take comfort

  1583. and joy

  1584. and hope

  1585. in knowing

  1586. that there

  1587. is no

  1588. force that

  1589. can stand

  1590. against him.

  1591. It's this

  1592. same power

  1593. that he's

  1594. going to

  1595. use to

  1596. bring freedom

  1597. to us from

  1598. the bondage

  1599. of evil.

  1600. It's this

  1601. same power

  1602. that he's

  1603. going to

  1604. use one

  1605. day to

  1606. bring full

  1607. and final

  1608. freedom in

  1609. this world.

  1610. And so we

  1611. trust and

  1612. we hope in

  1613. him.

  1614. He is the

  1615. only one who

  1616. can put

  1617. death to

  1618. death.

  1619. Jesus is

  1620. the only

  1621. one who

  1622. can defeat

  1623. and end

  1624. the kingdom

  1625. of darkness.

  1626. And that's

  1627. what we're

  1628. going to see

  1629. later on

  1630. in the

  1631. Gospel of

  1632. Mark.

  1633. When Jesus

  1634. dies on

  1635. the cross

  1636. and raises

  1637. again from

  1638. the dead,

  1639. he also

  1640. shows a

  1641. power that

  1642. no one

  1643. else has.

  1644. He shows

  1645. the power

  1646. to defeat

  1647. death.

  1648. And so

  1649. that's why

  1650. the Apostle

  1651. Paul tells

  1652. us in

  1653. 1 Corinthians

  1654. 15,

  1655. then comes

  1656. the end

  1657. when he,

  1658. that is

  1659. Jesus,

  1660. delivers the

  1661. kingdom to

  1662. God the

  1663. Father after

  1664. destroying

  1665. every rule

  1666. and every

  1667. authority and

  1668. power.

  1669. For he must

  1670. reign until

  1671. he has put

  1672. all his

  1673. enemies under

  1674. his feet.

  1675. The last

  1676. enemy to

  1677. be destroyed

  1678. is death.

  1679. Jesus has

  1680. ultimate power

  1681. over evil

  1682. in this

  1683. world.

  1684. He will

  1685. show it

  1686. by ending

  1687. even death

  1688. itself.

  1689. Who is

  1690. Jesus?

  1691. Jesus.

  1692. He is the

  1693. one with

  1694. the greatest

  1695. power.

  1696. Power like

  1697. we have

  1698. never seen

  1699. before.

  1700. How do we

  1701. respond to

  1702. him?

  1703. We love

  1704. him.

  1705. We obey

  1706. him.

  1707. We trust

  1708. in him.

  1709. We take

  1710. hope in

  1711. him.

  1712. In his

  1713. first book,

  1714. in the

  1715. Chronicles of

  1716. Narnia series,

  1717. The Lion,

  1718. the Witch,

  1719. and the

  1720. Wardrobe,

  1721. C.S.

  1722. Lewis tells

  1723. us the story

  1724. of the

  1725. Pivensey

  1726. children who

  1727. have to move

  1728. away from

  1729. their home

  1730. because of

  1731. the bombing

  1732. during the

  1733. World War.

  1734. They enter

  1735. the world

  1736. of Narnia

  1737. and they

  1738. quickly meet

  1739. the Beaver

  1740. family.

  1741. When they

  1742. meet the

  1743. Beaver

  1744. family,

  1745. they have

  1746. dinner with

  1747. them.

  1748. After they

  1749. have dinner

  1750. with them,

  1751. they sit

  1752. down to

  1753. talk and

  1754. they find

  1755. out about

  1756. this lion

  1757. named Aslan

  1758. who, of

  1759. course,

  1760. they've never

  1761. heard of

  1762. before because

  1763. they've never

  1764. been in

  1765. Narnia before.

  1766. They have

  1767. to ask,

  1768. who is

  1769. this person?

  1770. Who is

  1771. Aslan?

  1772. Asked

  1773. Susan.

  1774. They begin

  1775. to explain.

  1776. Aslan is

  1777. this great

  1778. king.

  1779. He's going

  1780. to come

  1781. back and

  1782. he's going

  1783. to make

  1784. everything

  1785. right.

  1786. There's

  1787. this poem,

  1788. wrong will

  1789. be right

  1790. when Aslan

  1791. comes in

  1792. sight.

  1793. At the

  1794. sound of

  1795. his roar,

  1796. sorrows

  1797. will be

  1798. no more.

  1799. Lucy wants

  1800. to know

  1801. if Aslan's

  1802. a man.

  1803. She's

  1804. surprised to

  1805. find out

  1806. that he's

  1807. a lion.

  1808. And so

  1809. Susan has

  1810. this final

  1811. question.

  1812. Oh, said

  1813. Susan, I

  1814. thought he

  1815. was a

  1816. man.

  1817. Is he

  1818. quite safe?

  1819. I shall

  1820. feel rather

  1821. nervous about

  1822. meeting a

  1823. lion.

  1824. That you

  1825. will, dearie,

  1826. and no

  1827. mistake, said

  1828. Mrs.

  1829. Beaver.

  1830. If there's

  1831. anyone who

  1832. can appear

  1833. before Aslan

  1834. without their

  1835. knees knocking,

  1836. they're either

  1837. braver than

  1838. most or else

  1839. just silly.

  1840. Then he

  1841. isn't safe,

  1842. said Lucy.

  1843. Safe, said

  1844. Mr.

  1845. Beaver.

  1846. Don't you hear

  1847. what Mrs.

  1848. Beaver tells

  1849. you?

  1850. Who said

  1851. anything about

  1852. safe?

  1853. Of course

  1854. he isn't

  1855. safe, but

  1856. he's good.

  1857. He is the

  1858. king, I

  1859. tell you.

  1860. Brothers and

  1861. sisters, Jesus

  1862. is not

  1863. safe.

  1864. He is the

  1865. one who

  1866. comes with

  1867. authority.

  1868. He comes

  1869. with authority

  1870. in his

  1871. teaching.

  1872. He comes

  1873. with authority

  1874. in his

  1875. power over

  1876. evil and

  1877. darkness and

  1878. sin.

  1879. But he

  1880. is good.

  1881. Will you

  1882. listen to

  1883. him?

  1884. Will you

  1885. obey him?

  1886. Will you

  1887. follow him?

  1888. Let's pray.

  1889. Our Father

  1890. in heaven,

  1891. we thank

  1892. you that

  1893. you aren't

  1894. safe, that

  1895. you are

  1896. dangerous and

  1897. powerful enough

  1898. to protect

  1899. us from

  1900. evil.

  1901. We ask

  1902. that you

  1903. would give

  1904. us the

  1905. confidence and

  1906. the hope

  1907. that comes

  1908. from that,

  1909. and you

  1910. would give

  1911. us the

  1912. trust and

  1913. obedience and

  1914. submission to

  1915. you that

  1916. comes from

  1917. knowing that

  1918. you are the

  1919. authority in

  1920. this world and

  1921. you are more

  1922. powerful than

  1923. anyone else.

  1924. We thank

  1925. you that you

  1926. showed your

  1927. power, not

  1928. in strength but

  1929. in weakness,

  1930. when Jesus

  1931. died for us on

  1932. the cross,

  1933. taking the

  1934. punishment that

  1935. we deserved

  1936. and raised from

  1937. the dead so

  1938. that we could

  1939. live with him

  1940. in new life.

  1941. We ask these

  1942. things, thankful

  1943. that we haven't

  1944. done anything to

  1945. earn them, but

  1946. instead we ask

  1947. them in Jesus'

  1948. name.

  1949. Amen.

  1950. For our

  1951. closing hymn,

  1952. спасибо.

  1953. Amen.

  1954. ,

  1955. amen.
