  1. to bring God's word to you today.

  2. A special welcome if you're new or visiting with us.

  3. We're glad that you're here.

  4. And we're glad that you're here

  5. not because we're trying to fill seats,

  6. but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  7. And as we follow Jesus together,

  8. we become convinced that there's no one so good

  9. that they don't need God's grace

  10. and no one so bad that they can't have it.

  11. So that's why we come back week after week

  12. to hear what God has to say to us in his word,

  13. because we believe that God has something to say

  14. to everyone.

  15. He has something to say to those

  16. who've been Christians their whole lives.

  17. He has something to say to those who have been Christians

  18. only for a short amount of time.

  19. And he has something to say to those

  20. who would not consider themselves Christians,

  21. who have doubts or questions or objections to Christianity.

  22. So that's why we open up God's word.

  23. We do it every Sunday.

  24. We're continuing this morning our series

  25. in the Gospel of Mark.

  26. You'll remember that the Gospel of Mark

  27. tells the story of Jesus in his life and his death

  28. and his resurrection.

  29. And we're asking two questions as we go along together.

  30. We're asking the question of who is Jesus

  31. and the question of how do we respond to him?

  32. Who is Jesus and how do we respond to him?

  33. Those are the very questions

  34. the Gospel of Mark itself asks us.

  35. So we're not doing anything that's foreign to the book,

  36. except this morning I'm gonna reverse those questions.

  37. So we're gonna ask first, how do we respond to Jesus?

  38. And second, who is he?

  39. I invite you to turn with me.

  40. We're in Mark chapter one.

  41. We're nearing the end of chapter one.

  42. We're in the very last section, verses 40 through 45.

  43. And as we come to this passage,

  44. there's sort of a challenge here.

  45. One of my challenges as a preacher

  46. and one of your challenges as a reader

  47. is what do we do with all these miracle stories

  48. in the Gospels?

  49. Why do we have so many of them?

  50. Why do we need all of them?

  51. Couldn't Mark?

  52. Mark certainly could have told us fewer or more miracles

  53. or less or more miracles, right?

  54. And didn't we just see a miracle?

  55. We just saw Simon's mother-in-law

  56. being almost raised from the dead.

  57. She had a fever, right?

  58. In Mark chapter one, verses 29 through 31.

  59. So my thought this morning

  60. is that I'll just recycle that sermon.

  61. I'm just gonna tell you all the same points

  62. from Mark chapter one, verses 29 through 31.

  63. You know, Jesus is king.

  64. He's restoring the world.

  65. He's bringing the future into the present.

  66. And then, you know,

  67. we've already learned everything we need to know, right?

  68. It's just repeating the same thing over and over.

  69. Of course, I joke.

  70. Why does Mark do that to us?

  71. What is it that we have to gain

  72. from so many different miracle stories

  73. coming to us over and over?

  74. By the way, this is not the last one.

  75. It's with that question that we're gonna read now.

  76. And so I invite you to turn in your Bible

  77. or in your worship guide or on your phone with me,

  78. Mark chapter one, starting at verse 40.

  79. And as we turn, remember that this is God's word.

  80. God tells us that his word is more precious than gold,

  81. even the finest gold.

  82. And it's sweeter than honey,

  83. even honey that comes straight from the honeycomb.

  84. And so that's why we read now, starting at verse 40.

  85. And a leper came to him, imploring him

  86. and kneeling said to him,

  87. if you will, you can make me clean.

  88. Moved with pity, he stretched out his hand

  89. and touched him and said to him,

  90. I will be clean.

  91. And immediately the leprosy left him

  92. and he was made clean.

  93. And Jesus sternly charged him

  94. and sent him away at once and said to him,

  95. see that you say nothing to anyone,

  96. but go show yourself to the priest

  97. and offer for your cleansing what Moses commanded

  98. for a proof to them.

  99. But he went out and began to talk freely about it

  100. and to spread the news

  101. so that Jesus could no longer openly enter a town

  102. but was out in desolate places

  103. and people were coming to him from every quarter.

  104. I invite you to pray with me

  105. as we come to this portion of God's word.

  106. Our father in heaven,

  107. and we thank you again for your word

  108. that you give us in it everything we need,

  109. that you don't give us too many miracle stories

  110. and you don't give us too few,

  111. but you give us everything that we need

  112. to know you, to grow in you,

  113. to love you and to serve you.

  114. We ask that you would do that this morning,

  115. that you would show us our need

  116. to be touched by you, to be made clean,

  117. and you'd show us how you meet us

  118. at that point of need.

  119. And we thank you that we can come to you freely

  120. and ask these things

  121. because we ask them in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

  122. Amen.

  123. Okay, I asked you all kind of a sassy question,

  124. which is why I can't just preach the same sermon

  125. I preached a few weeks ago in Jesus Healing

  126. because we have another healing right in front of us.

  127. And thankfully, Mark doesn't leave us to wonder.

  128. He answers that question right away.

  129. Very first noun that we have in verse 14,

  130. very first noun of this story clues us in.

  131. We are dealing with a leper and a leper came to him.

  132. Now, this is a concept we are not as familiar with

  133. in the modern day,

  134. but as we saw in our Old Testament reading this morning,

  135. this was a really big deal.

  136. If you're a leper, you are someone who's outcast.

  137. You're someone who's in desperate need.

  138. You are practically exiled from the community.

  139. Remember, I told you to focus on verses 44 and 45.

  140. In that Leviticus 13 reading,

  141. we saw that someone would live outside of the community.

  142. They'd have to declare to everyone how unclean they were.

  143. And so it was considered by many people

  144. that leprosy was actually a fate worse than death.

  145. It would be better to die

  146. than to have to live cut off from everyone,

  147. to live looking disfigured and deformed in this way.

  148. A leper, scholars tell us,

  149. can encompass a wide variety of skin diseases.

  150. What we do know is it would make you look terrible.

  151. You would be compared at times to looking like a corpse.

  152. These people would be especially white and pale.

  153. And so it can be,

  154. you can imagine, right, how terrible that is.

  155. Of course, people even today spend all sorts of money

  156. caring for their skin

  157. and this desire to look healthy and young and beautiful.

  158. The person with leprosy

  159. has given up on that a long time ago, right?

  160. There is no hope for them to escape this fate.

  161. On top of that,

  162. scholars tell us it was considered contagious.

  163. So if you were a leper,

  164. not only did you look terrible,

  165. but no one would want to have anything to do with you.

  166. There's a reason you're told

  167. to live outside of the community.

  168. You're cut off from friendships and relationships.

  169. Of course, you all can think just how crazy

  170. maybe you began to feel during COVID,

  171. quarantined for a few days

  172. or isolated for a few weeks.

  173. Imagine being cut off from people

  174. for the rest of your life.

  175. That's the fate that is facing this person.

  176. And to add insult to injury,

  177. to make it even more of a hopeless situation,

  178. this was considered something that was incurable.

  179. And so this was in many ways

  180. the worst of the worst place to be in the ancient world.

  181. You were someone who was cast out from society.

  182. Now this is hard for us as modern people

  183. to wrap our heads around.

  184. If you all were here a few weeks ago,

  185. you remember Jason Tippett,

  186. a pastor in Buena Vista, Colorado,

  187. came and preached.

  188. Jason says he thinks that the best way

  189. for us to understand leprosy today,

  190. the closest analogy would be that of a sex offender.

  191. Those are our modern day lepers.

  192. They're people who are separated out from society, right?

  193. They have to keep their distance from other people.

  194. Everywhere they go,

  195. they often have to declare their status.

  196. Now I'm not saying that's a bad thing.

  197. What I am saying is that's our idea in society

  198. of understanding what it is like

  199. to carry this type of shame,

  200. this type of permanent being cut off from a community,

  201. this sort of isolation.

  202. And so Mark here is drawing us into the story

  203. from the very beginning.

  204. There's an acceleration,

  205. an intensification of what's going on here.

  206. This is not a garden variety healing.

  207. This is not a garden variety exorcism.

  208. This is different in kind

  209. from Simon's mother-in-law being cured of her fever.

  210. This is an entirely different situation.

  211. This is someone with an extremely high level

  212. of hopelessness and despair,

  213. an incredibly low quality of life.

  214. And so we can understand why this man does what he does.

  215. Remember, I've told you before,

  216. when we read the gospels,

  217. we are looking to characters as models.

  218. This man models for us how it is

  219. that we are meant to respond to Jesus.

  220. Verse 40, we see how desperate he is.

  221. He comes to Jesus.

  222. Jesus isn't seeking him out.

  223. Of course, he comes knowing people aren't going

  224. to want to see him or be around him.

  225. Not only does he come,

  226. he's imploring Jesus and kneeling before him.

  227. In other words, this man is so desperate,

  228. he doesn't care what people think of him.

  229. He doesn't care how they look at him.

  230. He is going to do anything

  231. to have a chance at Jesus and his healing.

  232. He is that desperate.

  233. He has given up long ago on looking good,

  234. feeling good, pretending to have everything together.

  235. Everyone knows that his life is a mess.

  236. He knows it as well.

  237. So he models for us something simple.

  238. How do we respond to Jesus?

  239. We respond to Jesus by coming to him.

  240. We come to him with our need.

  241. Remember last week we talked about prayer.

  242. This is the appropriate posture for prayer.

  243. People who are desperate,

  244. who know that they have no other hope.

  245. You remember the illustration from last week

  246. about Tim and Kathy Keller who prayed

  247. because they realized otherwise they would not make it.

  248. This man runs to Jesus because he knows

  249. otherwise he is not going to make it.

  250. This man knows his need.

  251. It's that desperate need that drives him to Jesus.

  252. He is no longer able to entertain the idea

  253. of maybe trying to be self-sufficient enough

  254. that he doesn't need to admit anything to anyone.

  255. Remember leprosy was something that was incurable.

  256. He could not escape from it.

  257. And so the point is this.

  258. Yes, Jesus takes the initiative, right?

  259. Yes, Jesus seeks us out.

  260. If he didn't, he wouldn't be there

  261. ministering in and near Capernaum.

  262. Yes, Jesus is the one who initiates his grace towards us.

  263. And those who truly know how desperate and needy they are

  264. run to Jesus.

  265. They come to Jesus.

  266. They are seeking him out and imploring him.

  267. Remember what we talked about in Mark chapter one,

  268. verses one through eight,

  269. when we began the very beginning of this gospel.

  270. Need is the price of admission.

  271. Jesus comes, he's told us,

  272. Mark chapter two, verse 17,

  273. those who are well have no need of a physician,

  274. but those who are sick.

  275. I came not to call the righteous, but sinners.

  276. How do we respond to Jesus?

  277. We run to him with our need.

  278. Brothers and sisters, do you know how needy you are?

  279. Do you know how needy you are?

  280. Leprosy is meant to be a picture for us

  281. of what our spiritual condition is.

  282. It's obvious for this man, right?

  283. Not always as obvious for us.

  284. It's easier for us to hide how dark our hearts are,

  285. than it is for this man to hide his leprosy.

  286. And yet he is a picture for us of what is true for all of us.

  287. We are in our sin, the walking dead.

  288. When and to the extent that we know that we will be like him,

  289. we will run after Jesus.

  290. We will come to him.

  291. We will be the ones imploring him and kneeling to him,

  292. saying, if you will, you can make it clean.

  293. Sometimes when I pray at the beginning of a sermon

  294. or I pray our prayer of invocation,

  295. I'll say something like this,

  296. that God would make Jesus more beautiful to us.

  297. Do you want Jesus to look more beautiful to you?

  298. Do you wonder from time to time maybe why Jesus

  299. is not as beautiful to you as you think

  300. you would like him to be or he should be?

  301. One of the great spiritual secrets is this.

  302. The more we understand our need,

  303. the more beautiful Jesus will be to us.

  304. The way that Jesus grows beautiful to us

  305. is that we grow in understanding and knowing

  306. how terrible our position is,

  307. how much we need him,

  308. the fact that we have no hope outside of him and his mercy.

  309. That is how Jesus becomes beautiful to us.

  310. Brothers and sisters,

  311. I promise you that this leper saw Jesus

  312. as incredibly beautiful.

  313. Even though in his appearance, Isaiah tells us,

  314. there's nothing that would draw us to Jesus.

  315. He didn't look beautiful in his face

  316. or his body or his figure.

  317. And yet his beauty came in his ability

  318. to meet this man's need.

  319. Jesus is beautiful to the needy.

  320. Jesus is beautiful to those who know

  321. that they cannot save themselves.

  322. Jesus is beautiful to those who know they are lepers.

  323. Jesus is beautiful to those who are willing to acknowledge

  324. they can't save themselves.

  325. believing we can save ourselves is as silly

  326. as a leper believing he can make himself clean.

  327. How do we respond to Jesus?

  328. We come to him, we run to him with our need.

  329. We know how desperate and how needy we are.

  330. I've told you all before,

  331. one of my passions as your pastor

  332. is not just that I would tell you things from the Bible

  333. and you would learn things about the Bible,

  334. but you would actually learn how to read the Bible.

  335. One of the things that we see in the Gospel of Mark

  336. is we have these sets of characters

  337. that serve as models for us.

  338. The disciples are mostly a negative model for us.

  339. In fact, one of my seminary professors put it this way,

  340. the disciples only get one thing right.

  341. The only thing the disciples get right

  342. is that they keep following Jesus.

  343. Now, that's a pretty big important thing to get right, right?

  344. They make it because of that.

  345. They make it because they keep following Jesus.

  346. We have this other set of characters,

  347. this group of people who are in desperate need of Jesus healing.

  348. They, in a sense, understand things spiritually

  349. that the disciples do not.

  350. While the disciples are confused,

  351. they're obsessed with power and position and honor,

  352. these people know that all they need is to be healed.

  353. They have given up a long time ago

  354. on being important or significant or wealthy or powerful.

  355. They just want to be clean.

  356. They just want to be healthy again.

  357. And so they're their model for us,

  358. that we would be not like the disciples stumbling along,

  359. being rebuked by Jesus for having little faith,

  360. but we instead would be like this leper,

  361. people who know how much we need Jesus and his grace,

  362. and we come to him asking for it

  363. because we have no other hope.

  364. People always want to know why they suffer in this life.

  365. Why is this the brokenness that you have?

  366. Why is this the thing in your life that doesn't work?

  367. They often come to pastors and they ask them,

  368. why?

  369. Why is this happening?

  370. Why is this the thing that's going on in my life?

  371. Why is this the thing that's broken?

  372. Guys, I don't know.

  373. I don't know why God has chosen your particular suffering for you.

  374. I can't answer that question for you.

  375. I don't know why God has allowed certain things into your life.

  376. God has not revealed that to me.

  377. I don't expect him to reveal that to me.

  378. Often all we can do, often all I can do is sit with you and be with you

  379. and remind you of God's faithfulness over time.

  380. God can use your suffering to draw you closer to him.

  381. God can use your suffering to show you your need.

  382. God can use your suffering to grow you spiritually.

  383. I don't know why he allows the things that he allows to happen.

  384. I do know he uses it for good.

  385. I do know one of the ways he uses it for good,

  386. that we would be like this man,

  387. that we can come with our need,

  388. imploring him and kneeling before him.

  389. Now when I say that,

  390. when I say that God uses suffering,

  391. uses it in our lives,

  392. often people mishear that.

  393. What I'm not saying,

  394. I'm not saying that suffering is okay.

  395. I'm not saying it's a great thing that this man had leprosy.

  396. I'm not saying that we dismiss it.

  397. I'm not saying that we don't cry and lament and grieve.

  398. Forbidding those things is called stoicism.

  399. It's not called Christianity.

  400. It's the opposite of what the Bible actually shows us.

  401. Sometimes people will say things like,

  402. well, God's sovereign.

  403. And that's true, right?

  404. People will use that though as a throwaway line.

  405. What they really mean is,

  406. I would like to avoid facing real pain and doubt.

  407. And so I'm just gonna shove this in the corner.

  408. That's not what God's sovereignty is for, right?

  409. It's a lot more comfortable to be numb sometimes.

  410. And then we wonder why we're not growing spiritually, right?

  411. Well, if you're numb,

  412. if you just say God's sovereign,

  413. and you shove things in the corner,

  414. you're not gonna come to him with your need.

  415. Of course you're not growing spiritually.

  416. Of course he's not becoming more beautiful to you.

  417. It's a lot easier, right?

  418. It's a lot easier to avoid the risk of coming to God

  419. with our hurts and needs.

  420. It's a lot safer.

  421. It's more comfortable to shut down our hearts

  422. because then we don't have to risk being disappointed again.

  423. It's a lot easier just to ignore and avoid God.

  424. And yet Psalm 13, right?

  425. The whole Bible shows us a different model.

  426. In Psalm 13, the psalmist is crying out,

  427. asking God how long he's gonna forget him.

  428. It's at the end of the psalm that he confesses God's sovereignty.

  429. It's after he's lamented.

  430. It's as he's grieving that he confesses that God's the one who's in control.

  431. I mean, imagine for a second that this leper is sitting in his leper colony

  432. and he's just reading, you know, theology books.

  433. Someone at the church just dumped a box of books by his tent

  434. and drove away so they wouldn't have to be infected.

  435. So he's reading, you know, some heavy theology

  436. and he gets to the section on God's sovereign.

  437. He says, oh, I'm a leper, but God's sovereign.

  438. Okay, I don't have to worry about this anymore.

  439. I'm just gonna stay here.

  440. No, he sees, he knows God's sovereignty.

  441. That's why he runs to God.

  442. That's why he comes and he has this confidence.

  443. Verse 40, if you will, you can, right?

  444. If you will, you can.

  445. He knows how powerful God is.

  446. He knows God's sovereignty.

  447. That's why he comes to him.

  448. That's what drives him to God.

  449. That's what gives him this confidence,

  450. this willingness to look like an idiot in front of everyone else

  451. because he knows that it's worth it.

  452. Brothers and sisters, God's sovereignty is meant to drive us

  453. to ask him for things.

  454. God's sovereignty is meant to drive us.

  455. It's what gives us enough confidence to finally make it safe,

  456. to lay our hearts and our needs out before him.

  457. That is what gives us the power and the platform.

  458. That is the only thing that makes it safe.

  459. That's how we're able to do what we talked about last week,

  460. to come before God in prayer.

  461. Are you ready to come and ask God for healing?

  462. Some of you have quietly resigned to the status quo

  463. because it's much safer

  464. and it's much easier than trusting and crying out.

  465. You don't have to risk being disappointed.

  466. You don't have to risk being embarrassed.

  467. What if I pray about this and things don't turn out well?

  468. What if I share my need with someone and it gets messy?

  469. You don't have to risk admitting

  470. what's actually going on in your lives.

  471. It's risky.

  472. It's risky to tell God what we need and ask him to intervene.

  473. It's risky to be lepers out in the open.

  474. It's risky to come into the town where God is.

  475. I knew a young woman a long time ago in a different life

  476. and she was desperate to be married.

  477. She told me she didn't pray about it for a long time

  478. because she was afraid of what would happen

  479. if God didn't answer.

  480. It's risky.

  481. It's risky to tell God what we want and need

  482. and ask him to intervene.

  483. It's risky to admit that things in your marriage are not okay.

  484. I might feel like admitting that you're a leper.

  485. It's risky to finally begin to talk about

  486. your heartbreak from your divorce.

  487. Seems scary, right?

  488. It's risky to ask the question

  489. of why your friendships only last a year or two

  490. and why you always self-sabotage.

  491. It's risky to ask the question

  492. of why you're always the one

  493. who ends your dating relationships.

  494. It's risky

  495. to finally admit

  496. that things are more important to you than people.

  497. It's risky to admit

  498. that everything you do

  499. has an angle to it.

  500. It's risky to admit

  501. that you're in over your ears

  502. in credit card debt

  503. and your purchases never accomplished

  504. what you hoped they would.

  505. That's the other thing

  506. this leper shows us.

  507. There's a sense in which

  508. sins that

  509. people can see,

  510. struggles that people can see,

  511. there's a grace to it.

  512. There's a grace

  513. to things being

  514. visible, right?

  515. If you're rich,

  516. if you're healthy,

  517. things look good on the inside,

  518. it's easy to hide.

  519. It's easy to believe

  520. you're powerful.

  521. There's a reason

  522. Jesus tells us

  523. in Mark chapter 10,

    Mark 10 chapter mention

  524. it's easier for a camel

  525. to go through the eye of a needle

  526. than for a rich person

  527. to enter the kingdom of God.

  528. Long time ago,

  529. summer of 2009,

  530. I was on this mission trip

  531. to Ireland

  532. and one of the things

  533. they had us do

  534. was door-to-door evangelism.

  535. Whatever you think about that,

  536. just put it aside for a minute,

  537. okay?

  538. Go with me.

  539. We experienced

  540. and it was already known

  541. that rich neighborhoods

  542. are not very interested.

  543. They're more likely

  544. to close the door on you,

  545. and they're more likely

  546. not to answer.

  547. Poor neighborhoods

  548. are much more interested.

  549. They're much more likely

  550. to open the door.

  551. They're much more likely

  552. to talk to you.

  553. Why?

  554. They're not under the illusion

  555. that they're powerful.

  556. They're not under the illusion

  557. that they have the world

  558. figured out

  559. and they can fix it.

  560. They know their need.

  561. They know the situation

  562. that they're in.

  563. So there's a grace.

  564. There's a grace that comes

  565. and your problems

  566. are something everyone can see.

  567. There's a grace for this leper.

  568. He can't hide the fact

  569. that he has leprosy.

  570. There's things

  571. that are easy to hide

  572. and things that are difficult

  573. to hide.

  574. You could have $200,000

  575. in credit card debt.

  576. I would have no idea, right?

  577. No one knows

  578. that that's your struggle.

  579. If you struggle

  580. with your weight,

  581. yeah, people might know that, right?

  582. Is one better than the other?

  583. Not necessarily.

  584. One worse than the other?

  585. I don't know.

  586. It's easy

  587. when our struggles

  588. can be hidden

  589. to avoid Jesus.

  590. The leper knows

  591. something different.

  592. And that's what helps

  593. the leper

  594. just want to be healed.

  595. That's what helps him

  596. know his need.

  597. That's what helps him

  598. avoid the trap

  599. of the disciples

  600. who want power

  601. and significance

  602. and fame.

  603. And so how do we

  604. respond to Jesus?

  605. We come to him

  606. with our need.

  607. We come to him

  608. with our need

  609. no matter how risky it is

  610. and how threatening it is.

  611. We come to him

  612. with our need

  613. because we have

  614. no other hope

  615. outside of God's mercy.

  616. And we come to him

  617. with our need

  618. because of who

  619. Jesus is.

  620. Remember,

  621. we have two questions.

  622. How do we respond to Jesus?

  623. Who is he?

  624. We have a wonderful picture,

  625. a beautiful picture

  626. of what Jesus is

  627. here in this passage.

  628. It's short and it's simple.

  629. Jesus touches

  630. the untouchable.

  631. Remember,

  632. I told you

  633. it was thought

  634. that leprosy

  635. was contagious.

  636. What does Jesus do

  637. in verse 41?

  638. moved with pity.

  639. He stretched out his hand

  640. and touched him.

  641. Jesus heals

  642. different people

  643. in different ways

  644. throughout the Gospels.

  645. That's part of the reason

  646. we have different miracles.

  647. He heals them

  648. in different ways

  649. depending on the situation.

  650. Here,

  651. he touches

  652. someone who's not

  653. supposed to be touched.

  654. Jesus isn't afraid

  655. of the fact

  656. that this man

  657. is unclean.

  658. He's not

  659. intimidated

  660. or overwhelmed

  661. or ashamed of him.

  662. He's not embarrassed

  663. by his need.

  664. Jesus doesn't feel

  665. awkward

  666. about the fact

  667. that this man

  668. is standing before him.

  669. Jesus doesn't feel

  670. awkward about you

  671. and your need.

  672. Jesus isn't embarrassed

  673. by you.

  674. There's nothing

  675. here

  676. that's so gross

  677. and repulsive

  678. that Jesus won't touch it.

  679. Jesus touches

  680. this man

  681. who has this gross

  682. and disfiguring

  683. skin disease.

  684. Remember we read

  685. in Leviticus 13

  686. about the little boils

  687. and the liquid

  688. coming out.

  689. This is gross.

  690. Jesus touches

  691. this man.

  692. Jesus is willing

  693. to do that.

  694. And so we see here

  695. just in a simple form

  696. the message

  697. of the Gospel.

  698. We're not all

  699. physical lepers

  700. but we are

  701. as one person

  702. has put it

  703. all spiritual lepers.

  704. We are all

  705. the walking dead.

  706. we all have

  707. no hope

  708. outside of Jesus

  709. and his touch.

  710. And

  711. we all have

  712. the opportunity

  713. the invitation

  714. to come

  715. like this man

  716. before Jesus

  717. verse 40

  718. to come to him

  719. to implore him

  720. and to kneel to him

  721. to say

  722. if you will

  723. you can make me clean.

  724. Of course we can have

  725. more confidence

  726. in this man

  727. because we know

  728. this story.

  729. we don't need

  730. to say

  731. if you will.

  732. We know

  733. that Jesus

  734. offers it.

  735. He offers it

  736. for everyone

  737. who comes to him

  738. in repentance

  739. and faith.

  740. Jesus is the one

  741. who touches

  742. the untouchable.

  743. There is nothing

  744. so gross

  745. and repulsive

  746. that Jesus

  747. won't touch it.

  748. There's nothing

  749. so far gone

  750. he's not powerful

  751. enough

  752. to heal it.

  753. And

  754. we have to know

  755. our need.

  756. We have to admit

  757. our need.

  758. In another gospel

  759. in the gospel

  760. of Luke

  761. we're told

  762. a story

  763. a story

  764. about two people.

  765. One person

  766. who knows

  767. his need

  768. and one who doesn't.

  769. Jesus tells

  770. the parable

  771. of the Pharisee

  772. and the tax collector.

  773. They both

  774. go to pray

  775. in the temple.

  776. Jesus tells it

  777. to those

  778. who trusted

  779. in themselves

  780. that they were

  781. righteous

  782. and treated

  783. others with contempt.

  784. The Pharisee

  785. stands by himself

  786. and he prays

  787. like this

  788. God I thank you

  789. that I am not

  790. like other men

  791. extortioners

  792. unjust adulterers

  793. or even

  794. like this

  795. tax collector.

  796. I fast

  797. twice a week.

  798. I give tithes

  799. of all that I get.

  800. Tax collector

  801. responds differently.

  802. He stands

  803. far off.

  804. He doesn't lift

  805. his eyes up

  806. to heaven

  807. but he beats

  808. his breast

  809. saying God

  810. be merciful

  811. to me

  812. a sinner.

  813. He knows

  814. he's a leper.

  815. And Jesus

  816. says this

  817. I tell you

  818. this man

  819. went down

  820. to his house

  821. justified

  822. rather than

  823. the other

  824. for everyone

  825. who exalts

  826. himself

  827. will be humbled

  828. but the one

  829. who humbles

  830. himself

  831. will be exalted.

  832. Brothers and sisters

  833. do you know

  834. your need?

  835. Jesus has come

  836. to touch it

  837. he has come

  838. to heal it.

  839. We just have

  840. to admit it

  841. and say

  842. God be merciful

  843. to me

  844. a sinner.

  845. Let's pray.

  846. Our Father

  847. in heaven

  848. we praise

  849. you

  850. and thank

  851. you

  852. for

  853. your grace

  854. that there

  855. is

  856. nothing

  857. so gross

  858. that you

  859. won't touch

  860. it

  861. and that you

  862. come to us

  863. the untouchable

  864. and you

  865. touch us.

  866. We ask

  867. that you

  868. would remind

  869. us of that

  870. this morning

  871. that you

  872. would drive

  873. that grace

  874. deep into

  875. our hearts

  876. that we

  877. would know

  878. it and

  879. believe it

  880. more and

  881. more that

  882. we would

  883. have greater

  884. confidence

  885. and faith

  886. in you

  887. that we

  888. would have

  889. the courage

  890. to admit

  891. our need

  892. and the joy

  893. that comes

  894. from seeing

  895. you meet it.

  896. We ask

  897. these things

  898. in the name

  899. of Jesus

  900. who comes

  901. to us

  902. no matter

  903. how bad

  904. things are

  905. and offers

  906. and is able

  907. to heal us.

  908. We ask

  909. these things

  910. in his name.

  911. Amen.
