  1. Good morning. My name is Matthew Capone and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian

  2. Church and it's my joy to bring God's Word to you today. A special welcome if you're new or

  3. visiting with us. We're glad that you're here and we're glad that you're here not because we're

  4. trying to fill seats but because we're following Jesus together as one community and as we follow

  5. Jesus together we become convinced that there's no one so good they don't need God's grace and

  6. no one so bad that they can't have it which is why we come back week after week to hear what God has

  7. to say to us in his Word. We have taken a break from our series in the Gospel of Mark for the season of

  8. Advent. You'll remember that the season of Advent is a time when we celebrate Jesus coming or arriving

  9. here on earth and we do a couple things. First of all we celebrate what God has done in the past

  10. already by sending Christ and then we also look forward to what he's going to do in the future

  11. when we see Christ come again. And so as Christians we're always doing this. We're always looking back

  12. to what God has done in the past. We're looking forward to what he will do in the future and we

  13. use both of those things to keep going and to live faithfully now in the present. Last week we were in

  14. Genesis chapter 3 and we saw that Jesus is the one who's going to come and put an end to shame. He's going

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  15. to be the one who comes and destroys and crushes evil forever. We saw that promise from chapter 3

  16. verse 15. He shall bruise your head and you shall bruise his heel. Meaning that while Satan is going

  17. to be able to hurt Jesus he will not crush him. Jesus on the other hand will crush the head of the

  18. serpent. We're fast forwarding eight or nine chapters this morning all the way to Genesis chapter 12 and

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  19. we're going to look not as Jesus is the one who ends shame but this morning Jesus is the one who brings

  20. the blessing to the nations. And so without further ado I'm going to invite you to turn with me now. You

  21. can turn near the end of your worship guide. You can also turn in your Bible or turn on your phone.

  22. No matter where you turn remember that this is God's word and God tells us that his word is a lamp to

  23. our feet and a light to our path which means that God has not left us to stumble alone in the dark

  24. but instead he's given us his word to show us the way to go. And so that's why we start now. Genesis chapter 11

    Genesis 11:27

  25. verse 27. Now these are the generations of Terah. Terah fathered Abram, Nahor, and Haran. And Haran fathered

  26. Lot. Haran died in the presence of his father Terah in the land of his kindred in Ur of the Chaldeans.

  27. And Abram and Nahor took wives. The name of Abram's wife was Sarai and the name of Nahor's wife Milcah,

  28. the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah and Iscah. Now Sarai was barren. She had no children.

  29. Terah took Abram his son and Lot the son of Haran, his grandson, and Sarai his daughter-in-law,

  30. his son Abram's wife. And they went forth together from Ur of the Chaldeans to go into the land of Canaan.

  31. But when they came to Haran, they settled there. The days of Terah were 205 years, and Terah died in

  32. Haran. Chapter 12. Now the Lord said to Abram, Go from your country and your kindred and your father's

  33. house to the land that I will show you. And I will make of you a great nation, and I will bless you and

  34. make your name great, so that you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and him who

  35. dishonors you, I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed. Verse 4.

  36. So Abram went as the Lord had told him, and Lot went with him. Abram was 75 years old when he departed

  37. from Haran. And Abram took Sarai his wife and Lot his brother's son, and all their possessions that

  38. they had gathered, and the people that they had acquired in Haran. And they set out to go to the

  39. land of Canaan. When they came to the land of Canaan, Abram passed through the land to the place

  40. at Shechem, to the oak of Morah. At that time, the Canaanites were in the land. Then the Lord appeared

  41. to Abram and said, To your offspring I will give this land. So he built there an altar to the Lord,

  42. who had appeared to him. From there he moved to the hill country on the east of Bethel, and pitched his

  43. tent with Bethel on the west, and Ai on the east. And there he built an altar to the Lord, and called

  44. upon the name of the Lord. And Abram journeyed on, still going toward the Negev. I invite you to pray

  45. with me as we come to this portion of God's Word. Our Father in heaven, we thank you again that you

  46. have given us your Word, not just in the New Testament, but in the Old Testament. And we ask

  47. that you would help us this morning to see your plan from the beginning of time, and that you would

  48. most of all set our eyes on Jesus, that we would see him as more beautiful and more glorious than we

  49. realized, that we would worship him, that we would serve him, that we would love him. We tell you this

  50. morning that we do love you, but we need your help, and so we ask that you would speak to us clearly

  51. in your Word. And we ask these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

  52. So we've skipped a lot of territory since we left off in Genesis chapter 3. Things only got worse

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  53. and went downhill after Adam and Eve took part in the forbidden fruit. First of all, Genesis chapter 4,

    Genesis 4 chapter mention

  54. the very next chapter, we had the first murder when Cain kills Abel. And then in that same chapter,

  55. the first murderer starts the first city. Things continue to get bad, though. It's not just that

  56. there's one man who's a murderer, but we see in Genesis chapter 6 through 8 that the earth becomes

    Genesis 6 chapter mention

  57. so wicked that God decides he's going to wipe everything out with a flood. And so there's nothing

  58. left except for Noah and his family and two of every kind of animal. Now there's such a steep and rapid

  59. descent in the history of mankind that the flood itself is not enough. Wickedness continues. Chapter

  60. 11, we get back to mankind abandoning God. They make this claim that they're going to make a name

  61. for themselves. And so they begin to build this tower, thinking that it's going to be able to reach up to

  62. the heavens. And we see God at that point bringing his judgment on them by scattering the nations and

  63. changing their languages. We're told in Genesis chapter 11 that everyone spoke the same language

    Genesis 11 chapter mention

  64. until God decided they were going to speak different languages. And of course, that it destroyed their

  65. ability to work together to build this great tower. And so the point is this. As we move on from Genesis

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  66. chapter 3, we saw the beginning of shame and pain in the world. The story gets darker and darker.

  67. It gets more and more bleak. And so that's where we're at when we come here to chapters 11 and 12.

  68. You'll remember our paradigm from chapter 3 that there are these two offspring that are going to

  69. be battling it out. And there's a promise that one offspring is going to crush the other. And so I

  70. mentioned earlier, chapter 3, verse 15, this promise, or I guess a threat given to the serpent,

  71. he shall bruise your head, you shall bruise his heel. There's going to be two seeds that are going to

  72. compete against each other. One is going to win. One's going to be the one that bruises the head.

  73. And so it's with that that we come to this setting, this passage here in chapter 11 and 12,

  74. and things are not looking good. So as we ended chapter 11 here, we have this background of tragedy

  75. and barrenness. First of all, we have this tragedy. Chapter 11, verse 28, Haran dies. So Terah,

  76. who's continuing this seed, he's got three sons, only one grandson. His grandson Lot, who's the son of Terah,

  77. or the son of Haran. Haran dies, so he has only two sons and one grandson. So there's that tragedy,

  78. right? It's supposed to be sons who bury their fathers, not fathers who bury their sons. But to

  79. make things even worse, we find out here that Sarai, verse 30, is barren. And so as we're hoping that

  80. there's going to be this offspring, this seed that's going to crush the head of the serpent, things are

  81. not looking good. Things are not looking good for the family of Terah, and things are not looking good

  82. for humanity. We have this picture here of frailty and wickedness. That's the background we're given

  83. here in chapter 11, frailty and wickedness. That shouldn't surprise us, though, because Advent is

  84. about light in the darkness. That's what we looked at last week with our lighting of the Advent candle,

  85. Isaiah chapter 9. The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. Those who dwelt in a land

    Isaiah 9 chapter mention

  86. of deep darkness, on them has a light shown. And so our pattern that we saw in chapter 3 continues here

  87. in chapter 12, which is this. God still shows up as the light in the darkness. God still shows up as the

  88. light in the darkness. In this background of wickedness and human frailty, God has not given up on

  89. his promise. As things look bleak, he continues to show up and pursue his people. And so we see at the

  90. beginning of chapter 12 these promises that he makes to Abram. First, verse 1, he tells him to leave his

  91. country. And in verse 2, because of that, he's going to make him a great nation. And so we're supposed to

  92. feel the dissonance right away. His wife can't have children. God's going to make a great nation out of

  93. him. Okay? Then he continues, though, verse 3, in you all the families of the earth shall be blessed.

  94. And so we have this impossible scenario, this impossible situation where God has promised

  95. that he's going to bring his redemption to bear on the earth through a seed, and yet all evidence would

  96. be given to the contrary. This man, Terah, is not able to generate the offspring that he might like.

  97. His son has died. And the man that we're encountering here, who's promised to become a great nation, his wife,

  98. is not able to have children. It's against that backdrop that God shows up making this great

  99. and seemingly foolish promise to Abraham. Not only are you going to have many children, but you're going to

  100. become a great nation. And not only are you going to become a great nation, that nation is going to

  101. bless the entire world. You and your wife who can't have kids are going to affect the entire globe with

  102. your offspring. Now, if we're familiar with the story of the Bible, we just need to pause for a second and

  103. think about how ridiculous that is. Ridiculous first in the sense that he's going to have lots of children.

  104. Ridiculous second in the sense that they're going to affect the entire world. This world that's been

  105. scattered. Remember, people are speaking different languages now. They're not able to communicate with

  106. each other. And somehow, Abraham's line is going to be able to break through to that. Now, if we're

  107. Abram here... By the way, I'm using Abram and Abraham interchangeably, and I'm going to keep doing that

  108. because if you know the story, you know his name gets changed in Genesis chapter 17. Fun Cheyenne Mountain

    Genesis 17 chapter mention

  109. Trivia Fact, I preached on Genesis chapter 17 in April of 2017 when I came to candidate many, many years ago.

    Genesis 17 chapter mention

  110. So, I did preach to you on that, but very few of you were here back then. Anyway, his name gets changed,

  111. right? So, if I say Abraham or Abram, same person. This is the promise that's been made to him. He would

  112. not have understood in what sense he was going to be a blessing to the entire nations. Some of the people

  113. reading the Old Testament before the time of Christ would not have understood exactly in what sense

  114. this person was going to be a blessing to the entire nations. Brothers and sisters, we know this

  115. morning exactly in what sense this offspring of Abraham is going to be a blessing to the entire

  116. nations. And the reason that we know it is not just because of the time of history that we live in,

  117. but because the Apostle Paul spells it out for us clearly and directly. So, I'm going to invite you

  118. to turn with me in your worship guide to page 4. We read from Galatians chapter 3 where Paul explains

    Galatians 3 chapter mention

  119. to us exactly what is going on in Genesis and the exact way in which Abraham's seat is going to be a

  120. blessing to the nations. And so, track with me then here. Look at verse 8 first. The Scriptures foresee

  121. that God would justify the Gentiles by faith. Gentiles being a word here that means people who aren't Jews.

  122. When God chooses Abraham, He chooses a people. Throughout the Old Testament, what we see is God

  123. being gracious to the Jewish nation. However, the plan was always that it would extend to all the

  124. nations of the earth. And so, here's the plan given us. Verse 8, He would justify the Gentiles. He would

  125. take people who are not Jews and He would save them. Then we're told that God preached the gospel

  126. beforehand to Abraham saying, in you shall all the nations be blessed. And so, we know clearly what it

  127. means here in Genesis chapter 12 that all the nations would be blessed. It's a way of God telling

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  128. Abraham about the gospel. In other words, He is giving them the good news that even though humanity

  129. is caught up in this scheme of wickedness that we've seen in the preceding chapters of Genesis,

  130. God has not given up on His creation or His people. He is going to come and He's going to provide them

  131. salvation by a Redeemer, sending His Son, Jesus Christ, who's going to do a few important things.

  132. First, He's going to live the perfect life that we should have lived but didn't.

  133. Second, He's going to die the death that we deserve to die on our behalf. In that sense, He is the

  134. blessing to the nations. And in that sense, God preached the gospel to Abraham. In other words, Abraham did

  135. not see clearly what we do now, which was that His seed that was going to crush the head of the serpent

  136. was going to come as one man, a person, Jesus Christ. And Jesus Christ, in His death and His resurrection,

  137. is going to destroy evil and wickedness forever. That is everything that was contained in these words

  138. when God spoke to Abraham. Abraham did not fully understand it. We now do.

  139. At the risk of being too obvious, the point is this. Jesus is the blessing to the nations.

  140. Jesus is the one who brings this salvation, not just for the Jews, but for everyone. We're given this

  141. passage, this promise against the backdrop of seeing how bad the world is. We looked at some of this last

  142. week. It's so bad that God had to purge the entire earth with a flood. It's so bad that

  143. all of mankind was united in rebellion against God, and He had to change their languages to confuse them.

  144. It is so bad that it's filled with the kind of tragedy that we saw at the end of chapter 11,

  145. that the fathers bury their sons rather than the sons burying their fathers.

  146. It is in that that there is only one kind of hope for God's people and for humanity. It is supernatural,

  147. divine intervention to come and save the world. And so that's what we see in verse 9 here of Galatians 3.

  148. So then those who are of faith are blessed along with Abraham, the man of faith.

  149. In other words, everyone who believes in Jesus Christ is included in this blessing.

  150. That is the blessing to the nations that is promised to Abraham. That is the blessing,

  151. brothers and sisters, that brings us here together this morning. Galatians 3 tells us,

  152. it explains for us exactly what's going on here. Chapter 12, blessing to the nations. Jesus is that blessing.

  153. Now there's sort of a cognitive dissonance we're meant to experience here as we read these words,

  154. and we know that Jesus is a blessing to the nations because what has just happened?

  155. We've seen not a blessing of the nations, but a scattering of the nations.

  156. Remember mankind's rebellion at the Tower of Babel? God scatters them across the earth.

  157. He changes their languages. And so it seems like God is talking out both sides of His mouth here.

  158. On the one hand, He's scattering people. On the other hand, He's pursuing them with His grace.

  159. On the one hand, He's scattering them in punishment. On the other hand, He says that He's going to bless them.

  160. How are we supposed to reconcile these things?

  161. How do we make sense of this God who's doing both at the same time?

  162. Well, the answer is we make sense of it in God's grace.

  163. God's scattering people everywhere. He's sending grace to people everywhere.

  164. His grace looks like this. Yes, He sent the nations all over the world.

  165. And simultaneously, at the same time, He is acting to pursue and save the nations.

  166. He has a plan, and He is executing it.

  167. This is the same thing we saw in the garden in Genesis chapter 3,

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  168. as God pursued Adam and Eve as they were hiding from Him, naked and ashamed.

  169. God continues here His constant, relentless pursuit in His grace.

  170. God, yes, brings punishment and judgment,

  171. and at the same time, He is coming to save and redeem.

  172. What we saw in Genesis 3 is true here in Genesis 12 as well.

  173. And ultimately, we know what Paul tells us in Galatians 3,

  174. that His pursuit of them culminates in the coming of Jesus Christ.

  175. That is why we sing,

  176. Joy to the world, the Lord has come.

  177. That is why we celebrate the season of Advent,

  178. because these two things, God's scattering of the nations

  179. and His grace that He sends out to them,

  180. make sense together when we see Jesus on the cross.

  181. They make sense as we see Jesus, on the one hand,

  182. receiving the judgments that the nations deserve,

  183. and on the other hand, providing the grace that is needed

  184. to save people of every language, nation, tribe, and tongue,

  185. every language that God created at the Tower of Babel.

  186. They make sense there.

  187. They make sense as we see Jesus coming as a baby in a manger.

  188. They make sense as we see Jesus living His life,

  189. as we've looked at in Mark.

  190. And they make sense as we see Jesus die and rise again from the dead.

  191. That is where we see the scattering and the grace come together.

  192. And so, brothers and sisters,

  193. we are here together this morning

  194. because of God's promise to Abraham to bless the nations.

  195. That is why God has brought this group of people together right now

  196. on December 5th, 2021.

  197. Few, if any of us, are Jews.

  198. We're different people.

  199. We come from a variety of countries.

  200. For some of us, English is our first language.

  201. For others of us, English is not our first language.

  202. We are here together

  203. because God promised to Abraham to bless the nations.

  204. And so, He brings that type of people together

  205. every Sunday around the world.

  206. There was a trend on Twitter

  207. that started in September of 2020.

  208. And the trend was called

  209. How It Started, How It's Going.

  210. And people would post these pictures side by side

  211. to show how something had progressed over time.

  212. So, you'd see things like this.

  213. If someone switched political candidates,

  214. they'd have a picture of them

  215. wearing the shirt for one candidate,

  216. how it started,

  217. how it's going.

  218. On the other side,

  219. they'd be wearing a shirt for the other candidate

  220. that they switched to.

  221. Some people would do it for their fitness journeys.

  222. They'd show a picture of them out of shape,

  223. how it started.

  224. And they'd have a picture of them

  225. looking in amazing shape,

  226. ripped,

  227. how it's going.

  228. Some people might have a puppy picture,

  229. how it started.

  230. And you have a full-grown dog picture,

  231. how it's going.

  232. This trend, however,

  233. focused and started

  234. with romantic stories.

  235. And so, most often,

  236. what you would see is this,

  237. how it started.

  238. The first time someone slipped

  239. into someone else's direct messages,

  240. the first time they texted them,

  241. how it's going,

  242. a picture of them at their wedding.

  243. You might see how it started,

  244. a picture of them at their wedding,

  245. how it's going,

  246. a picture of them with their nine kids.

  247. Okay?

  248. You might see a first date picture,

  249. and then them with their family

  250. and all their pets.

  251. The point is to show

  252. that there's these things

  253. that have changed over time.

  254. We have things that start small

  255. and go big.

  256. As we look at Genesis chapter 12,

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  257. we get to see how it started,

  258. and we know how it's going.

  259. Okay?

  260. How it started,

  261. there's a 75-year-old man

  262. who has an infertile wife

  263. who's also his sister.

  264. Think about that.

  265. Okay?

  266. How it started.

  267. I'm going to say that again.

  268. You have a 75-year-old man

  269. with an infertile wife

  270. who's also his sister.

  271. How it's going,

  272. there's estimated 2.5 billion Christians

  273. around the world today,

  274. more than any other world religion.

  275. How it started,

  276. in the desert of the ancient Near East.

  277. How it's going,

  278. all around the world.

  279. By the way,

  280. the ancient Near East

  281. is not the geographic base

  282. of Christianity anymore.

  283. The geographic base of Christianity

  284. is now the global south.

  285. How it started.

  286. Abraham abandoning his homeland,

  287. becoming a nomad,

  288. picking up all his possessions,

  289. and leaving everything that he knew.

  290. Some of you, by the way,

  291. know something about that.

  292. How it's going.

  293. Jesus promised

  294. that his people will inherit the earth.

  295. How it started.

  296. Jesus called to Abraham

  297. to give up everything

  298. and leave his homeland.

  299. How it's going.

  300. Jesus called to us

  301. that we've seen in the Gospel of Mark

  302. to follow me.

  303. In other words,

  304. we see now

  305. how much power God has.

  306. We see what Abraham

  307. could only hope in by faith.

  308. that God was going to spread

  309. his grace

  310. around the entire world.

  311. We know and understand

  312. the plan that God had

  313. in a way that Abraham

  314. could only guess at,

  315. that he was going to send

  316. his one and only son

  317. as a sacrifice.

  318. And how did we get

  319. from how it started

  320. to how it's going?

  321. We got there

  322. because Jesus is the one

  323. who has come

  324. and he is the one

  325. who is coming.

  326. We got there

  327. because Jesus is the one

  328. who comes and fulfills

  329. and completes the promise.

  330. We got there

  331. because he is going

  332. to heal the world

  333. far as the curse

  334. is found.

  335. We got here

  336. because Jesus came

  337. for the salvation

  338. of the world.

  339. That is why

  340. we're able to look

  341. at Genesis 12

  342. and say how it started

  343. and look at what God

  344. has given us

  345. here this morning

  346. at Cheyenne Mountain

  347. Presbyterian Church

  348. and the fellowship

  349. that we have

  350. with Christians

  351. around the world

  352. and throughout time

  353. and say

  354. this is how it's going.

  355. That is what we celebrate

  356. here at Advent.

  357. The promise

  358. from Habakkuk 2

  359. we begin to see

  360. how it's going to happen.

  361. The earth will be filled

  362. with the knowledge

  363. of the glory of the Lord

  364. as the waters

  365. cover the sea.

  366. Jesus is the one

  367. who comes

  368. as the blessing

  369. to the nations.

  370. and he comes

  371. unlike any other religion

  372. not tied

  373. to a geographic place

  374. but someone

  375. who's come

  376. for the whole world.

  377. In his book

  378. on Mark

  379. called Jesus the King

  380. Tim Keller

  381. talks about

  382. this reality

  383. of Christianity

  384. being a worldwide religion

  385. and he tells

  386. about an interview

  387. with a man

  388. named Andrew Wells

  389. who noted that

  390. wherever the other

  391. great world religions

  392. began

  393. that is still

  394. their center today.

  395. Islam started

  396. in Arabia

  397. at Mecca

  398. and the Middle East

  399. is still

  400. the center

  401. of Islam today.

  402. Buddhism

  403. started in the Far East

  404. and that's still

  405. the center of Buddhism.

  406. So too

  407. with Hinduism.

  408. Christianity

  409. is the exception.

  410. Christianity's center

  411. is always moving

  412. always

  413. on a pilgrimage.

  414. He listed

  415. it was in Jerusalem

  416. at one point

  417. it moved

  418. to the Hellenistic

  419. and Mediterranean world

  420. then for a while

  421. the center of Christianity

  422. was in Northern Europe.

  423. In the 20th century

  424. North America

  425. became the center.

  426. Meanwhile

  427. in Latin America

  428. Asia and Africa

  429. it has been growing

  430. at up to 10 times

  431. the population

  432. growth rate.

  433. In the past decade

  434. it has returned

  435. more than 50%

  436. of Christians

  437. in the world

  438. now live

  439. in the southern hemisphere.

  440. And we're not surprised

  441. because Jesus

  442. has come

  443. as the blessing

  444. to the nations.

  445. In the year 1900

  446. Africa was only

  447. 1% Christian.

  448. Now Christians

  449. make up nearly half

  450. the African population.

  451. In the next

  452. 50 to 70 years

  453. the center

  454. of Christianity

  455. is predicted

  456. to complete

  457. this shift

  458. away from

  459. European countries

  460. and from

  461. the United States.

  462. It will migrate

  463. as it always migrates.

  464. Jesus truly

  465. is

  466. the blessing

  467. to the nations.

  468. He is

  469. the one

  470. who has come

  471. for every

  472. people

  473. place

  474. tribe

  475. and tongue

  476. and nation.

  477. He is the fulfillment

  478. of this promise

  479. to Abraham.

  480. And so

  481. how do we respond

  482. to him?

  483. What do we do

  484. with a God

  485. who has come

  486. for people

  487. who speak

  488. every language?

  489. Well we do

  490. what Abraham

  491. models for us here.

  492. We answer his call

  493. to follow him.

  494. Abraham experiences

  495. tremendous loss here.

  496. He gives up

  497. his family.

  498. He gives up

  499. the place

  500. that he's known.

  501. He gives up

  502. permanence.

  503. And instead

  504. he takes on

  505. this nomadic life.

  506. And he does it

  507. by the way

  508. with a bleak picture

  509. with bad odds.

  510. everything would

  511. say that Abraham

  512. is headed into failure.

  513. Everything would

  514. predict that this

  515. is a bad idea

  516. and yet God's

  517. promise here

  518. is that he's

  519. going to provide

  520. for them

  521. what no one else

  522. can.

  523. The hope

  524. of those

  525. at the Tower

  526. of Babel

  527. is that they

  528. would make

  529. a name

  530. for themselves.

  531. God tells

  532. Abraham here

  533. verse 2

  534. I will make

  535. your name

  536. great.

  537. I am going

  538. to be the one

  539. who fulfills

  540. your greatest

  541. hopes

  542. and dreams.

  543. And it's been

  544. pointed out here

  545. that God's

  546. I wills

  547. in this passage

  548. far outstrip

  549. and eclipse

  550. anything he asks

  551. of Abram.

  552. Abram is just

  553. told go

  554. and then we see

  555. this list

  556. of I wills.

  557. The land

  558. that I will show

  559. you.

  560. I will make

  561. of you a great

  562. nation.

  563. I will bless

  564. you.

  565. You will be a

  566. blessing.

  567. I will bless

  568. those who bless

  569. you.

  570. I will curse

  571. and you all

  572. the families

  573. of the earth

  574. will be blessed.

  575. God always

  576. empowers

  577. and enables

  578. what he commands.

  579. God always

  580. gives all

  581. the resources

  582. for what he

  583. has called

  584. us to do.

  585. God always

  586. bankrolls

  587. our obedience

  588. with his promises.

  589. True for

  590. Abraham

  591. and true

  592. for us

  593. as well.

  594. We see

  595. his blessing

  596. to the nations

  597. and so we

  598. follow him

  599. and we trust

  600. him.

  601. people are

  602. often fascinated

  603. by founding

  604. stories

  605. especially

  606. when those

  607. founding stories

  608. show something

  609. small becoming

  610. something great

  611. and so one of

  612. the most famous

  613. ones is Apple

  614. computers starting

  615. in this garage

  616. with a pirate

  617. flag flying on

  618. the wall back

  619. in 1976.

  620. Now what most

  621. people don't

  622. remember is that

  623. there weren't

  624. just two founders

  625. to Apple.

  626. There were three

  627. founders.

  628. founders.

  629. The third

  630. founder was

  631. this man

  632. named Ronald

  633. Wayne and

  634. less than two

  635. weeks after the

  636. founding of Apple

  637. Ronald decided

  638. that he wanted

  639. to pull out

  640. and so he

  641. sold his 10%

  642. share in the

  643. company for a

  644. grand whopping

  645. total of $800.

  646. It's estimated

  647. that in 2013

  648. 10% of Apple

  649. would have been

  650. worth $35 billion.

  651. million.

  652. Now maybe he

  653. thought it was a

  654. bleak picture

  655. and bad odds

  656. to be a part

  657. of a computer

  658. company that

  659. was starting in

  660. a garage with a

  661. pirate flag on

  662. the wall.

  663. At the end

  664. of 2020

  665. Apple was worth

  666. $65.34

  667. billion.

  668. Small to big

  669. in a way that

  670. would have been

  671. hard, maybe

  672. impossible to

  673. imagine at the

  674. time.

  675. Brothers and

  676. sisters, in this

  677. passage in

  678. Genesis chapter

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  679. 12, we get to

  680. see the greatest

  681. founding story of

  682. all time.

  683. Something that

  684. makes $65 billion

  685. look incredibly

  686. small.

  687. when we

  688. celebrate

  689. Advent, we

  690. are celebrating

  691. that something

  692. much greater

  693. and more

  694. glorious and

  695. more powerful

  696. than Apple

  697. stock is

  698. here.

  699. In fact, we

  700. see something

  701. that is meant

  702. to be a

  703. blessing to

  704. the entire

  705. nations, not

  706. providing wonderful

  707. electronic experiences,

  708. but providing

  709. salvation and

  710. redemption,

  711. reconciliation in

  712. our relationship

  713. with God, and

  714. therefore our

  715. reconciliation with

  716. one another,

  717. knowing that God

  718. is coming to

  719. wipe every tear

  720. away from our

  721. eyes and

  722. restore and

  723. remake this

  724. world better

  725. than it has

  726. ever been in

  727. the past, that

  728. he has come to

  729. heal and

  730. redeem and

  731. restore.

  732. And we have

  733. the chance to

  734. take part in

  735. that now, like

  736. Abraham, following

  737. God's call, because

  738. we have seen

  739. his power.

  740. We see a

  741. world of

  742. wickedness where

  743. the nations are

  744. scattered, and

  745. we see that God

  746. continues to

  747. pursue, offering

  748. his blessing to

  749. every single one

  750. of them.

  751. Jesus is the

  752. one who has

  753. come as the

  754. blessing for you

  755. and for me.

  756. Let's pray.

  757. Our Father in

  758. heaven, we thank

  759. you for the

  760. glorious and

  761. wonderful work

  762. that you have

  763. done in our

  764. lives and that

  765. you do around

  766. the world.

  767. We thank you

  768. that you have

  769. come not for

  770. people who

  771. just speak one

  772. language, but

  773. people who

  774. speak every

  775. language.

  776. We thank you

  777. that you

  778. haven't come

  779. just for one

  780. country, but

  781. you've come for

  782. every country.

  783. We thank you

  784. that you've

  785. given us hope

  786. and confidence

  787. in you as we

  788. see your power

  789. at work in a

  790. way that it is

  791. not visible

  792. anywhere else,

  793. that we know

  794. that you are

  795. the one and

  796. true God.

  797. We ask that

  798. you would use

  799. that truth to

  800. encourage us and

  801. challenge us and

  802. change us.

  803. And we ask

  804. these things in the

  805. mighty name of

  806. Jesus Christ.
