  1. Good morning. My name is Matthew Capone, and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church.

  2. And it's my joy to bring God's word to you today. A special welcome to those of you who are visiting.

  3. We're glad that you're here, and we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats,

  4. but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  5. And as we follow Jesus together, we become convinced that there's no one so good.

  6. They don't need God's grace, and no one's so bad that they can't have it,

  7. which is why we come back week after week to hear what God has to say to us in his word.

  8. We're continuing our series for Advent in the book of Genesis,

  9. and you'll remember that Advent comes from a Latin word that means to come or to arrive.

  10. And so during this season, we celebrate the fact that Jesus came.

  11. He arrived here on this earth, and we do several things.

  12. First, we celebrate that, what has happened in the past.

  13. The fact that Jesus came, that he died, that he rose from the dead.

  14. We also look forward with longing to what he's going to do in the future.

  15. His first coming reminds us of his second coming.

  16. And then third, we live faithfully now in the present.

  17. We do what the entire Christian life is, not just in the month of December,

  18. celebrating what God has done in the past,

  19. looking forward to what he will do in the future

  20. so that we can follow him and live faithfully now in the present.

  21. We are moving on from Genesis chapters 11 and 12,

    Genesis 11 chapter mention

  22. where we were last week, to Genesis chapter 22.

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  23. You'll remember our first week, we were in Genesis chapter 3,

    Genesis 3 chapter mention

  24. and we talked about the fact that Jesus is the one who ends shame.

  25. He destroys evil forever.

  26. Our second week, in Genesis 12,

  27. we looked at the fact that Jesus is the one who brings the ultimate blessing to the nations,

  28. the blessing that God promised that Abraham would develop through his offspring.

  29. And now, this week, we're looking at Jesus as the final sacrifice,

  30. and God is the one who provides him for us.

  31. If you're familiar with this passage of Scripture, Genesis 22,

  32. you know it's actually one of the most controversial stories in the entire Bible.

  33. And it's cited by those who have doubts or objections about Christianity

  34. as one of the reasons that they're not Christians.

  35. And so, instead of shying away from it,

  36. we are going to go dive headlong into this

  37. and see what it is that God has to teach us in his word.

  38. We're going to see God's provision for us,

  39. his provision for Abraham in providing a sacrifice,

  40. his provision for us providing a sacrifice as well.

  41. And so, I invite you to turn with me now to Genesis chapter 22.

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  42. You can turn there near the end of your worship guide.

  43. You can turn in your Bible, or you can turn on your phone.

  44. No matter where you turn, remember that this is God's word.

  45. And God tells us that his word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path,

  46. which means that God has not left us to stumble alone in the dark,

  47. but instead, he's given us his word to show us the way to go.

  48. And so, that's why we read now Genesis chapter 22, starting at verse 1.

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  49. After these things, God tested Abraham and said to him,

  50. Abraham, and he said, Here I am.

  51. He said, Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love,

  52. and go to the land of Moriah and offer him there as a burnt offering

  53. on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.

  54. So Abraham rose early in the morning, saddled his donkey,

  55. and took two of his young men with him and his son Isaac.

  56. And he cut the wood for the burnt offering and arose

  57. and went to the place of which God had told him.

  58. Verse 4.

  59. On the third day, Abraham lifted up his eyes and saw the place from afar.

  60. Then Abraham said to his young men, Stay here with the donkey.

  61. I and the boy will go over there and worship and come again to you.

  62. And Abraham took the wood of the burnt offering and laid it on Isaac, his son.

  63. And he took in his hand the fire and the knife.

  64. So they went, both of them, together.

  65. And Isaac said to his father Abraham, My father.

  66. And he said, Here I am, my son.

  67. He said, Behold, the fire and the wood, but where is the lamb for a burnt offering?

  68. Verse 8.

  69. Abraham said, God will provide for himself the lamb for a burnt offering, my son.

  70. So they went, both of them, together.

  71. When they came to the place of which God had told him,

  72. Abraham built the altar there and laid the wood in order

  73. and bound Isaac, his son, and laid him on the altar on top of the wood.

  74. Then Abraham reached out his hand and took the knife to slaughter his son.

  75. The angel of the Lord called to him from heaven and said,

  76. Abraham, Abraham.

  77. And he said, Here I am.

  78. He said, Do not lay your hand on the boy or do anything to him.

  79. For now I know that you fear God,

  80. seeing you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.

  81. And Abraham lifted up his eyes and looked,

  82. and behold, behind him was a ram caught in a thicket by his horns.

  83. And Abraham went and took the ram and offered it up as a burnt offering

  84. instead of his son.

  85. So Abraham called the name of that place the Lord will provide.

  86. As it is said to this day,

  87. On the mount of the Lord it shall be provided.

  88. And the angel of the Lord called to Abraham a second time from heaven and said,

  89. By myself I have sworn, declares the Lord,

  90. because you have done this and have not withheld your son,

  91. your only son,

  92. I will surely bless you.

  93. And I will surely multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven

  94. and as the sand that is on the seashore.

  95. And your offspring shall possess the gate of his enemies,

  96. and in your offspring shall all the nations of the earth be blessed,

  97. because you have obeyed my voice.

  98. So Abraham returned to his young men,

  99. and they arose and went together to Beersheba.

  100. And Abraham lived at Beersheba.

  101. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  102. Our Father in heaven,

  103. we thank you again that you speak to us,

  104. and you teach us by your word,

  105. and we ask simply that you would do that this morning,

  106. that you would show us our need for you and your grace,

  107. and you would also show us that you come,

  108. and you do more than we could ask or imagine,

  109. that you meet us at that very same point of need,

  110. that you came and died for us,

  111. even when we were still sinners.

  112. We ask that you would use your word this morning

  113. to challenge us and also to encourage us.

  114. Most of all, you would use it to transform us,

  115. that we would be people who look more and more like your son.

  116. We thank you that we don't have to worry this morning

  117. about whether we've earned or deserved these things,

  118. but instead, we simply ask them in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

  119. Amen.

  120. Okay, last week in Genesis chapter 12,

    Genesis 12 chapter mention

  121. we saw this great promise that God gave to Abraham.

  122. We might even think of it as a little bit over the top.

  123. He tells him at the very beginning of chapter 12, verse 2,

  124. I'm going to make of you a great nation.

  125. And then in verse 3,

  126. in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.

  127. So he's going to have all these offspring,

  128. except there's only one problem, right?

  129. He's talking to a 75-year-old man

  130. who happens to have an infertile wife

  131. who's also his half-sister.

  132. So we have this great promise on the one hand.

  133. We have incredibly bleak odds on the other.

  134. And so there's this huge gap

  135. between the promise that God gives Abraham

  136. and the reality that he's living in at the moment.

  137. Now, we've skipped a bunch of chapters between 12 and 22.

  138. A lot happens in those chapters,

  139. but we're just going to focus on the parts

  140. that relate to this promise that God's given.

  141. In Genesis 15, he makes a covenant with Abraham.

  142. He repeats this promise again.

  143. In fact, he tells him,

  144. not only is he going to have a son, verse 5,

  145. he's also going to have offspring

  146. that are as numerous as the stars.

  147. So it's not just that Sarah's going to have a child,

  148. but his offspring are going to be more

  149. than he can possibly count.

  150. Genesis 17, he repeats this promise again.

  151. I'm going to give you a son.

  152. We find out that time has passed.

  153. Abraham is no longer 75.

  154. He actually says,

  155. how are you going to have a child

  156. born to a man who's 100 years old?

  157. Shall Sarah, who is 90 years old, bear a child?

  158. We found out later in that chapter,

  159. Abraham is rounding up.

  160. He's actually 99 years old.

  161. That doesn't necessarily change a lot.

  162. It's getting harder and harder, right?

  163. The odds are getting lower and lower.

  164. Remember, Genesis 18, God shows up again and says,

  165. this time next year, you will have a son.

  166. Then the previous chapter before this one,

  167. chapter 21, it finally happens.

  168. After all these promises and all these repetition,

  169. after 15 years have passed in Abraham's life,

  170. finally God's promise comes to fruition.

  171. And we've been on this story,

  172. if you've read the book of Genesis,

  173. with Abraham feeling this longing and this conflict,

  174. wondering if what he wants is finally going to happen.

  175. If you've ever known someone who has longed for a child

  176. and not been able to have one,

  177. you understand what this journey is like.

  178. It's one of prayer and heartache.

  179. It's one of hoping and longing, right?

  180. You're joining with them in that.

  181. We've done that together as a church in the past.

  182. And so you know the joy,

  183. you know that feeling of what happens

  184. when it finally comes to pass,

  185. when the child is finally born.

  186. That's the joy that Abraham and Sarah are feeling.

  187. That's what we're supposed to be thinking about

  188. as we enter into this chapter

  189. at the beginning of Genesis chapter 22.

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  190. And so that's why what comes next,

  191. one and two, is so shocking.

  192. I want you to look there with me first at verse two.

  193. Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love,

  194. go to the land of Moriah

  195. and offer him there as a burnt offering

  196. on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.

  197. Can you imagine a greater reversal?

  198. Can you imagine something more shocking than that?

  199. I've been promising to you for 15 years

  200. that I'm going to give you a son.

  201. And not only that,

  202. you are going to have offspring

  203. that are more than the stars.

  204. And now that this has all happened,

  205. the son has been born,

  206. it's time for you to go kill him.

  207. If there's a shock to it,

  208. it's because they're supposed to be.

  209. There is a whiplash here for us

  210. as we read this story.

  211. We've been building for 10 chapters to this moment.

  212. We should expect Abraham's line to continue,

  213. but instead we see this threat

  214. that it's going to end.

  215. What in the world is going on?

  216. We'll look first at verse one.

  217. It tells us that God tested Abraham.

  218. We have to understand that in the Bible,

  219. this idea of testing

  220. was where God would take someone

  221. and he would present a choice.

  222. God presents a choice

  223. between obedience and disobedience.

  224. And the point,

  225. the goal of this test is twofold.

  226. First, it's supposed to reveal

  227. the character of the one tested.

  228. It's their chance to demonstrate

  229. the faith they have.

  230. The other one is it's supposed

  231. to result in blessing.

  232. This obedience is a chance for them

  233. to appropriate the blessings

  234. that God offers.

  235. And so that helps us maybe a tiny bit

  236. to understand that this is a testing narrative.

  237. By the way, we already saw one

  238. in the Gospel of Mark

  239. when Jesus is in the desert.

  240. That's a testing narrative.

  241. We're seeing if he's going to remain faithful

  242. to God in the face of the temptations

  243. of Satan.

  244. It also clarifies for us

  245. what God is asking here.

  246. God is saying,

  247. do you really love me

  248. more than anything else?

  249. I'm testing you.

  250. I want to know

  251. if you're going to remain faithful

  252. in the face of an obstacle.

  253. That solves part of the problem for us.

  254. It doesn't solve the whole problem.

  255. We still have this story

  256. in which God has just asked a man

  257. to sacrifice his son, right?

  258. Which raises all kinds of questions

  259. and objections in our mind.

  260. This is something for those people

  261. who have doubts or questions

  262. or objections to Christianity

  263. that rises to the top

  264. of the list of reasons

  265. they wouldn't believe or have faith.

  266. How could we worship a God

  267. who chooses to ask someone

  268. to kill their own son?

  269. What kind of crazy deity is this?

  270. There's a scandal to it, right?

  271. And so instead of shying away from it,

  272. instead of ignoring the question,

  273. this morning we're going to dive

  274. head on into it.

  275. And the reason we're going to do that

  276. is because we have confidence

  277. in God and his word.

  278. We don't need to shy away

  279. from the hard questions

  280. that we encounter

  281. as we study the Bible.

  282. In fact, we can have faith

  283. knowing that God

  284. provides answers for us.

  285. We can ask hard questions

  286. and not be afraid of it.

  287. We can bring our doubts

  288. into the light

  289. and not be afraid of them

  290. because we believe

  291. that God is big enough

  292. and great enough

  293. to handle them.

  294. So you might be familiar

  295. with an atheist

  296. named Richard Dawkins

  297. who wrote a book

  298. called The God Delusion

  299. and he points to this story

  300. and says,

  301. this disgraceful story

  302. is an example

  303. simultaneously of child abuse,

  304. bullying in two

  305. asymmetrical power relationships

  306. and the first recorded use

  307. of the Nuremberg defense.

  308. This is a reason

  309. not to believe in God.

  310. What are we going to do?

  311. How would we answer someone

  312. whose objection

  313. to the Bible is that?

  314. Well, I want you to think

  315. for a second

  316. about eating food, okay?

  317. There are different

  318. cultural practices

  319. around how you handle

  320. your plate

  321. when you're eating

  322. with someone.

  323. So if you are in India

  324. or Japan,

  325. you're expected

  326. to clean your plate.

  327. If you don't clean

  328. your plate,

  329. that's a sign

  330. that you didn't enjoy

  331. the food.

  332. It wasn't very good.

  333. And so it's an insult

  334. to someone

  335. to leave food

  336. on your plate.

  337. If you're in China,

  338. you want to do

  339. the exact opposite.

  340. You want to leave

  341. food on your plate

  342. because you're saying

  343. I've had enough to eat.

  344. If you finish

  345. all your food,

  346. what you're telling

  347. your host

  348. is that they didn't

  349. feed you well.

  350. Okay?

  351. Different cultures,

  352. opposite messages.

  353. In Egypt,

  354. apparently,

  355. it's rude

  356. to ask for the salt.

  357. And it's rude

  358. to ask for the salt

  359. because the person

  360. who's prepared your meal

  361. has decided

  362. exactly how they want

  363. it to taste

  364. and they put

  365. the perfect amount

  366. of salt on it.

  367. So if you ask

  368. for salt,

  369. you're telling them

  370. you're not a good cook

  371. and you don't know

  372. what you're doing.

  373. Now in America,

  374. right,

  375. if you ask for the salt,

  376. someone just thinks,

  377. well,

  378. they need some salt.

  379. Right?

  380. No one thinks

  381. anything of it.

  382. The point I'm driving

  383. at is this.

  384. Different cultures

  385. have these implicit messages

  386. that are hidden

  387. in different actions.

  388. Now we're doing something,

  389. we're talking about

  390. something here

  391. that's much more serious

  392. than food,

  393. but my point is this.

  394. Often it's what you do,

  395. not what you say.

  396. Okay?

  397. So track with me here.

  398. When we're talking

  399. about child sacrifice

  400. in the ancient Near East,

  401. this was a cultural form

  402. that was well understood

  403. in that time.

  404. If you ask someone

  405. to sacrifice their child,

  406. what you were saying

  407. implicitly was,

  408. is your loyalty to me

  409. above everything else?

  410. Is your loyalty to me

  411. above everything else?

  412. Do you trust me

  413. more than anything else?

  414. Okay?

  415. So track with me here.

  416. Cultural form,

  417. there's an explicit action

  418. with an implicit question.

  419. Is God being crazy

  420. and deranged here

  421. in this passage?

  422. No, because he's using

  423. a well-known cultural form

  424. that Abraham would have understood.

  425. And this is in fact

  426. the way the entire Bible works.

  427. God always comes to us,

  428. he always comes

  429. to the characters in the Bible

  430. in ways that they can understand.

  431. That's the reason

  432. why the Bible is written

  433. in different languages,

  434. because different audiences

  435. speak different languages.

  436. Okay?

  437. That's the reason

  438. why Jesus came,

  439. part of the reason

  440. why Jesus came as a man.

  441. He's translated

  442. into our form.

  443. God always meets people

  444. where they're at.

  445. In this story,

  446. God is asking

  447. for a sacrifice

  448. because he is meeting

  449. Abraham

  450. as an ancient

  451. Near Eastern man

  452. where he's at.

  453. He is speaking

  454. in a way

  455. that Abraham

  456. can understand.

  457. Okay,

  458. I'm not sure

  459. what this form

  460. would be in America.

  461. I'm not quite sure

  462. how you ask

  463. for someone's

  464. total allegiance.

  465. My guess would be

  466. it would be this.

  467. Are you willing

  468. to go bankrupt?

  469. Are you willing

  470. to lose

  471. all your money?

  472. Right?

  473. That's the American way

  474. of asking

  475. for total loyalty

  476. and obedience.

  477. If you're talking

  478. to an entrepreneur

  479. and they say,

  480. I'm giving everything

  481. that I have in on this,

  482. then you know

  483. they're committed

  484. above everything else.

  485. Right?

  486. So this is the ancient

  487. Near Eastern way

  488. of saying,

  489. I'm willing

  490. to go bankrupt.

  491. I'm willing

  492. to sacrifice

  493. my son.

  494. Of course,

  495. Jesus asks

  496. a question

  497. like this.

  498. He makes a statement

  499. like this in Luke 18.

  500. Remember,

  501. he talks to the rich

  502. young ruler

  503. and he tells him,

  504. one thing you still lack,

  505. sell all that you have

  506. and distribute

  507. to the poor

  508. and you will have

  509. treasure in heaven

  510. and come follow me.

  511. As you track Jesus

  512. in the Gospels,

  513. we know he doesn't

  514. ask that of everyone,

  515. but this is his way

  516. in that instance

  517. with that man

  518. of asking him,

  519. do you love me

  520. more than anything else?

  521. Is your loyalty

  522. to me

  523. greater than anything else?

  524. And so as we wrestle

  525. with this difficult passage,

  526. I can tell you

  527. with great certainty

  528. this morning

  529. that if you hear

  530. a voice telling you

  531. to sacrifice a child,

  532. that is not from God.

  533. Okay?

  534. And I have great confidence

  535. about that

  536. for many reasons.

  537. One of them is

  538. that's not a cultural form

  539. that we recognize.

  540. Okay?

  541. Another reason is

  542. you're not Abraham,

  543. you're not the founder

  544. of God's people.

  545. And a third reason

  546. would be

  547. Jesus is the final sacrifice,

  548. right?

  549. This points towards

  550. something

  551. that now has been fulfilled.

  552. And so we don't need

  553. to shy away

  554. from these difficult questions

  555. about Scripture

  556. and so we can dive

  557. into them and say,

  558. yeah, we have an answer

  559. for this.

  560. We understand

  561. that God speaks

  562. in specific ways

  563. to specific people

  564. honoring their cultural context,

  565. honoring the time

  566. and place

  567. in which they live.

  568. Finally,

  569. I would say

  570. you can remember this.

  571. Isaac isn't actually

  572. sacrificed, right?

  573. At the end

  574. of this narrative,

  575. Isaac is still alive.

  576. If God

  577. is not going

  578. to ask you

  579. to sacrifice

  580. your son,

  581. what does this passage

  582. have to do with us?

  583. And

  584. how does it apply

  585. to us

  586. in any way?

  587. If this is something,

  588. a cultural form

  589. that we don't recognize,

  590. if Abraham

  591. has a role

  592. that we don't have,

  593. does it have

  594. any relevance

  595. for us right now?

  596. As we read

  597. this passage

  598. as people living

  599. in Colorado Springs

  600. in 2021,

  601. near the end

  602. of 2021,

  603. the point for us

  604. is this.

  605. Sometimes

  606. obedience

  607. to God's

  608. commands

  609. doesn't make sense.

  610. sometimes

  611. obedience

  612. to God's

  613. commands

  614. does not

  615. make sense.

  616. Sometimes

  617. it looks like

  618. God

  619. is threatening

  620. the blessing

  621. and goodness

  622. in our life,

  623. not giving it.

  624. Sometimes

  625. it looks like

  626. God is threatening

  627. our blessing,

  628. not giving it.

  629. Sometimes

  630. we're afraid

  631. that God

  632. wants to destroy

  633. us

  634. rather than

  635. save us.

  636. us.

  637. Sometimes

  638. we're afraid

  639. God wants

  640. to destroy

  641. us

  642. rather than

  643. save us.

  644. As Americans,

  645. it might

  646. look like

  647. this.

  648. God

  649. tells us

  650. to be

  651. unified

  652. and be

  653. in community

  654. with people

  655. who are

  656. radically

  657. different

  658. than us.

  659. Our culture

  660. tells us

  661. that people

  662. who disagree

  663. with us

  664. are evil

  665. because they

  666. disagree

  667. with us.

  668. We

  669. actually

  670. are called

  671. by God

  672. to associate

  673. with people

  674. who are

  675. weird,

  676. outcast,

  677. marginalized,

  678. socially

  679. awkward,

  680. people like

  681. us.

  682. Our culture

  683. tells us

  684. that's not

  685. going to

  686. save us,

  687. that's going

  688. to destroy

  689. us,

  690. that's social

  691. suicide.

  692. It looks

  693. like God

  694. wants to

  695. destroy us,

  696. not save

  697. us.

  698. God tells

  699. us we

  700. need to

  701. trust him

  702. for justice,

  703. that vengeance

  704. isn't ours.

  705. And the

  706. world tells

  707. us that

  708. we're alone

  709. and we

  710. have to

  711. defend

  712. ourselves.

  713. we need

  714. to vindicate

  715. ourselves

  716. and gossip

  717. about others.

  718. If someone

  719. offends us,

  720. we can

  721. ruin them

  722. on social

  723. media.

  724. And so

  725. it feels

  726. like God

  727. wants to

  728. destroy us,

  729. not save

  730. us.

  731. God

  732. still tells

  733. us today

  734. to trust

  735. him more

  736. than our

  737. money.

  738. And the

  739. culture tells

  740. us that we

  741. will have

  742. lost if

  743. we miss

  744. out on

  745. certain

  746. experiences

  747. and

  748. lifestyles.

  749. God

  750. wants to

  751. destroy

  752. us

  753. rather

  754. than

  755. save

  756. us.

  757. God

  758. calls

  759. us to

  760. be

  761. faithful

  762. to

  763. him

  764. in

  765. the

  766. midst

  767. of

  768. persecution

  769. and we

  770. know

  771. that that

  772. means

  773. the

  774. world

  775. will

  776. reject

  777. us.

  778. And so

  779. it feels

  780. like God

  781. is

  782. threatening

  783. our

  784. blessing,

  785. not

  786. giving

  787. it

  788. to

  789. us.

  790. God

  791. still

  792. tells

  793. us

  794. that

  795. our

  796. bodies

  797. are

  798. sacred

  799. and we

  800. need to

  801. be stingy

  802. with

  803. them.

  804. And the

  805. world

  806. tells us

  807. there is

  808. nothing

  809. that's

  810. more

  811. important

  812. than

  813. sexual

  814. freedom.

  815. And so

  816. it feels

  817. like God

  818. wants to

  819. destroy

  820. us

  821. rather

  822. than

  823. save

  824. us.

  825. Of course

  826. we have

  827. the words

  828. of our

  829. Lord

  830. Jesus

  831. from

  832. Mark

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  833. chapter

  834. 8.

  835. If

  836. anyone

  837. would

  838. come

  839. after

  840. me

  841. let

  842. him

  843. deny

  844. himself

  845. and

  846. take

  847. up

  848. his

  849. cross

  850. and

  851. follow

  852. me.

  853. For

  854. whoever

  855. would

  856. save

  857. his

  858. life

  859. would

  860. lose

  861. it

  862. but

  863. whoever

  864. loses

  865. his

  866. life

  867. for my

  868. sake

  869. in the

  870. gospels

  871. will

  872. save

  873. it.

  874. And so

  875. the question

  876. this passage

  877. presents us

  878. with is

  879. this.

  880. What do

  881. we do

  882. when we

  883. hit up

  884. against

  885. these

  886. places

  887. where

  888. God's

  889. commands

  890. in our

  891. lives

  892. feel

  893. like

  894. death

  895. rather

  896. than

  897. life?

  898. we

  899. we

  900. need

  901. to

  902. look

  903. to

  904. Abraham

  905. and

  906. his

  907. example

  908. to

  909. see

  910. how

  911. he

  912. responds.

  913. Just

  914. like

  915. in

  916. chapter

  917. 12

  918. without

  919. hesitation

  920. Abraham

  921. obeys

  922. right away

  923. we see

  924. in verses

  925. 3

  926. and 4

  927. that he

  928. prepares

  929. and sets

  930. out.

  931. In

  932. verses

  933. 5

  934. through

  935. 10

  936. Abraham

  937. and

  938. Isaac

  939. go

  940. by

  941. themselves

  942. they

  943. leave

  944. the

  945. others

  946. behind.

  947. And so

  948. Abraham

  949. here

  950. serves

  951. for us

  952. as an

  953. example

  954. of

  955. faithful

  956. obedience.

  957. He

  958. hears

  959. God's

  960. command

  961. he

  962. feels

  963. the

  964. threat

  965. of

  966. it

  967. and

  968. he

  969. moves

  970. forward

  971. knowing

  972. that

  973. he

  974. does

  975. trust

  976. God

  977. more

  978. than

  979. anything

  980. else.

  981. The

  982. answer

  983. to

  984. the

  985. question

  986. of

  987. whether

  988. Abraham

  989. is

  990. loyal

  991. to

  992. God

  993. more

  994. than

  995. anyone

  996. else

  997. is

  998. yes.

  999. The

  1000. answer

  1001. to

  1002. whether

  1003. Abraham

  1004. trusts

  1005. God

  1006. and

  1007. his

  1008. promises

  1009. is

  1010. yes.

  1011. Abraham

  1012. is

  1013. able

  1014. to

  1015. obey

  1016. because

  1017. he

  1018. has

  1019. seen

  1020. God's

  1021. faithfulness

  1022. to

  1023. him

  1024. in

  1025. the

  1026. past

  1027. and

  1028. he

  1029. trusts

  1030. God's

  1031. promise.

  1032. On

  1033. the

  1034. one

  1035. hand

  1036. we've

  1037. just

  1038. come

  1039. off

  1040. of

  1041. chapter

  1042. 21

  1043. it

  1044. seems

  1045. shocking

  1046. that

  1047. he

  1048. would

  1049. ask

  1050. this

  1051. child

  1052. to

  1053. be

  1054. sacrificed.

  1055. On

  1056. the

  1057. other

  1058. hand

  1059. we've

  1060. just

  1061. come

  1062. off

  1063. chapter

  1064. 21

  1065. Abraham

  1066. has

  1067. seen

  1068. that

  1069. God

  1070. can

  1071. provide

  1072. a

  1073. child

  1074. to

  1075. a

  1076. 99

  1077. year

  1078. old

  1079. man

  1080. and

  1081. a

  1082. 90

  1083. year

  1084. old

  1085. woman.

  1086. He

  1087. knows

  1088. how

  1089. great

  1090. and

  1091. how

  1092. powerful

  1093. God

  1094. is.

  1095. He

  1096. knows

  1097. that

  1098. there

  1099. is

  1100. nothing

  1101. that

  1102. can

  1103. stop

  1104. God

  1105. or

  1106. thwart

  1107. his

  1108. plan.

  1109. He

  1110. knows

  1111. that

  1112. God

  1113. will

  1114. provide

  1115. for

  1116. him

  1117. no

  1118. matter

  1119. what.

  1120. And

  1121. so

  1122. he's

  1123. able

  1124. to

  1125. move

  1126. forward

  1127. in

  1128. obedience.

  1129. We

  1130. see

  1131. his

  1132. faith

  1133. here

  1134. in

  1135. verses

  1136. 7

  1137. and

  1138. 8.

  1139. His

  1140. son

  1141. Isaac

  1142. asks

  1143. him

  1144. where

  1145. is

  1146. the

  1147. lamb

  1148. for

  1149. a

  1150. burnt

  1151. offering?

  1152. Abraham

  1153. said

  1154. God

  1155. will

  1156. provide

  1157. for

  1158. himself

  1159. the

  1160. lamb

  1161. for

  1162. a

  1163. burnt

  1164. offering

  1165. my

  1166. son.

  1167. Abraham

  1168. knows

  1169. somehow

  1170. somewhere

  1171. God

  1172. is

  1173. going

  1174. to

  1175. do

  1176. what's

  1177. needed

  1178. to

  1179. protect

  1180. him

  1181. and

  1182. his

  1183. family

  1184. and

  1185. the

  1186. promise

  1187. that

  1188. God

  1189. has

  1190. made.

  1191. He

  1192. knows

  1193. that

  1194. God

  1195. will

  1196. never

  1197. leave

  1198. him

  1199. nor

  1200. forsake

  1201. him.

  1202. And

  1203. so

  1204. the

  1205. New

  1206. Testament

  1207. presents

  1208. Abraham

  1209. to us

  1210. as

  1211. this

  1212. great

  1213. model

  1214. of

  1215. faith.

  1216. Hebrews

  1217. 11

  1218. mentions

  1219. something

  1220. that

  1221. we're

  1222. not

  1223. told

  1224. in

  1225. this

  1226. passage.

  1227. Hebrews

  1228. 11

  1229. says

  1230. one

  1231. option

  1232. that

  1233. Abraham

  1234. was

  1235. considering

  1236. was

  1237. that

  1238. God

  1239. was

  1240. going

  1241. to

  1242. raise

  1243. Isaac

  1244. from

  1245. the

  1246. dead.

  1247. So

  1248. that's

  1249. one

  1250. way

  1251. that

  1252. maybe

  1253. he

  1254. thought

  1255. God

  1256. was

  1257. going

  1258. to

  1259. show

  1260. up.

  1261. It

  1262. says

  1263. by faith

  1264. Abraham

  1265. when he

  1266. was

  1267. tested

  1268. offered

  1269. up

  1270. Isaac

  1271. and

  1272. he

  1273. who

  1274. had

  1275. received

  1276. the

  1277. promises

  1278. was

  1279. in

  1280. the

  1281. act

  1282. of

  1283. offering

  1284. up

  1285. his

  1286. only

  1287. son

  1288. of

  1289. whom

  1290. it

  1291. was

  1292. said

  1293. through

  1294. Isaac

  1295. shall

  1296. your

  1297. offspring

  1298. be

  1299. named.

  1300. He

  1301. considered

  1302. that

  1303. God

  1304. was

  1305. able

  1306. even

  1307. to

  1308. raise

  1309. him

  1310. James

    James 2 chapter mention

  1311. chapter

  1312. 2

  1313. also

  1314. commends

  1315. Abraham

  1316. to

  1317. us.

  1318. It

  1319. tells

  1320. us

  1321. Abraham

  1322. believed

  1323. God

  1324. and it

  1325. was

  1326. counted

  1327. to

  1328. him

  1329. as

  1330. righteousness.

  1331. Was

  1332. not

  1333. Abraham

  1334. our

  1335. father

  1336. justified

  1337. by

  1338. works

  1339. when

  1340. he

  1341. offered

  1342. up

  1343. his

  1344. son

  1345. Isaac

  1346. on

  1347. the

  1348. altar?

  1349. In

  1350. other

  1351. words,

  1352. Abraham

  1353. is able

  1354. to

  1355. obey

  1356. God

  1357. no

  1358. matter

  1359. what

  1360. because

  1361. of

  1362. God's

  1363. promise

  1364. and

  1365. his

  1366. faithfulness.

  1367. Abraham

  1368. obeys

  1369. in

  1370. faith.

  1371. He

  1372. knows

  1373. that

  1374. he

  1375. can

  1376. trust

  1377. God

  1378. no

  1379. matter

  1380. what.

  1381. Brothers

  1382. and

  1383. sisters,

  1384. when

  1385. we

  1386. find

  1387. ourselves

  1388. cutting

  1389. up

  1390. against

  1391. the

  1392. sharp

  1393. edge

  1394. of

  1395. God's

  1396. commands

  1397. in

  1398. this

  1399. world,

  1400. we

  1401. know

  1402. because

  1403. of

  1404. God's

  1405. faithfulness

  1406. to

  1407. us

  1408. that

  1409. he

  1410. will

  1411. protect

  1412. us

  1413. and

  1414. he

  1415. will

  1416. care

  1417. for

  1418. us

  1419. no

  1420. matter

  1421. what.

  1422. Abraham

  1423. could

  1424. only

  1425. look

  1426. back

  1427. to

  1428. the

  1429. miraculous

  1430. birth

  1431. of a

  1432. child

  1433. to

  1434. a

  1435. 90

  1436. year

  1437. old

  1438. woman.

  1439. Brothers

  1440. and

  1441. sisters,

  1442. we

  1443. can

  1444. look

  1445. back

  1446. to

  1447. something

  1448. much

  1449. greater

  1450. and

  1451. more

  1452. powerful.

  1453. We

  1454. look

  1455. back

  1456. not

  1457. to

  1458. Isaac

  1459. being

  1460. born,

  1461. we

  1462. look

  1463. back

  1464. to

  1465. a

  1466. different

  1467. son

  1468. who

  1469. was

  1470. born.

  1471. We

  1472. look

  1473. back

  1474. to

  1475. Jesus

  1476. Christ

  1477. who

  1478. came

  1479. into

  1480. this

  1481. world

  1482. as

  1483. God

  1484. and

  1485. as

  1486. a

  1487. man

  1488. was

  1489. born,

  1490. also

  1491. a

  1492. miraculous

  1493. birth,

  1494. but

  1495. even

  1496. greater

  1497. so

  1498. because

  1499. he

  1500. was

  1501. not

  1502. only

  1503. man

  1504. but

  1505. also

  1506. God.

  1507. He

  1508. came

  1509. not

  1510. through

  1511. natural

  1512. reproduction

  1513. through

  1514. Abraham

  1515. and Sarah

  1516. but

  1517. through

  1518. divine

  1519. reproduction

  1520. with

  1521. Mary.

  1522. We

  1523. know

  1524. more

  1525. than

  1526. Abraham

  1527. could

  1528. ever

  1529. dream

  1530. how

  1531. faithful

  1532. and

  1533. trustworthy

  1534. God

  1535. is.

  1536. And so

  1537. just like

  1538. Abraham

  1539. we can

  1540. follow

  1541. him

  1542. in

  1543. faith.

  1544. True

  1545. faith

  1546. leads

  1547. to

  1548. obedience.

  1549. And the

  1550. New Testament

  1551. presents

  1552. Abraham as a

  1553. model for

  1554. us of this

  1555. type of

  1556. faith.

  1557. And so

  1558. we see

  1559. in our

  1560. final scene

  1561. here

  1562. God's

  1563. faithfulness

  1564. to

  1565. Abraham.

  1566. Verses

  1567. 10

  1568. through

  1569. 13

  1570. this

  1571. angel

  1572. intervenes

  1573. and provides

  1574. another

  1575. sacrifice

  1576. for him

  1577. to use.

  1578. Verse

  1579. 12

  1580. Abraham

  1581. hears

  1582. the words

  1583. of God's

  1584. approval.

  1585. Do not

  1586. lay your

  1587. hand on

  1588. the boy

  1589. or do

  1590. anything

  1591. to him

  1592. for now

  1593. I know

  1594. that you

  1595. fear

  1596. God

  1597. seeing

  1598. that you

  1599. have not

  1600. withheld

  1601. your son

  1602. your only

  1603. son

  1604. from me.

  1605. In other

  1606. words I

  1607. asked a

  1608. question

  1609. do you

  1610. love me

  1611. and trust

  1612. me more

  1613. than anything

  1614. else?

  1615. And you

  1616. by your

  1617. actions

  1618. gave the

  1619. right

  1620. answer

  1621. yes.

  1622. And so

  1623. we see

  1624. these promises

  1625. here at

  1626. the end.

  1627. Verse

  1628. 16

  1629. because you

  1630. have done

  1631. this and

  1632. have not

  1633. withheld

  1634. your son

  1635. your only

  1636. son I

  1637. will surely

  1638. bless you

  1639. and I

  1640. will surely

  1641. multiply your

  1642. offspring

  1643. as the

  1644. stars of

  1645. the heaven

  1646. and as

  1647. the sand

  1648. that is

  1649. on the

  1650. seashore

  1651. and your

  1652. offspring

  1653. shall possess

  1654. the gates

  1655. of his

  1656. enemies.

  1657. God

  1658. requires an

  1659. offering from

  1660. Abraham.

  1661. God

  1662. provides the

  1663. offering

  1664. for Abraham.

  1665. All

  1666. Abraham

  1667. brings with

  1668. him

  1669. is his

  1670. faith.

  1671. All

  1672. Abraham

  1673. brings with

  1674. him is

  1675. his trust

  1676. and his

  1677. obedience

  1678. because God

  1679. gives him

  1680. everything

  1681. that he

  1682. needs.

  1683. God

  1684. provides for

  1685. us,

  1686. his people,

  1687. in miraculous

  1688. ways even

  1689. as he brings

  1690. us through

  1691. trials and

  1692. difficulties that

  1693. he's ordained

  1694. for us.

  1695. God

  1696. provides for

  1697. his people in

  1698. miraculous ways

  1699. as he brings

  1700. them through

  1701. trials that

  1702. he has ordained

  1703. for them.

  1704. Trials that he

  1705. brings to test

  1706. to reveal

  1707. our faith

  1708. like he

  1709. reveals the

  1710. faith of

  1711. Abraham,

  1712. to bring

  1713. us blessing

  1714. like he

  1715. brings blessing

  1716. to Abraham.

  1717. And so

  1718. the point

  1719. is this,

  1720. it may

  1721. not make

  1722. sense in

  1723. the moment

  1724. or right

  1725. away,

  1726. but eventually

  1727. obedience to

  1728. God's commands

  1729. will make

  1730. sense.

  1731. God will

  1732. vindicate us

  1733. and provide

  1734. for us.

  1735. We may

  1736. not see it

  1737. fully now

  1738. and we

  1739. know that

  1740. we will

  1741. one day.

  1742. And so

  1743. we obey

  1744. and trust

  1745. God no

  1746. matter what

  1747. because we

  1748. know that

  1749. he is

  1750. faithful to

  1751. his covenant.

  1752. And of

  1753. course we

  1754. know ultimately

  1755. his faithfulness

  1756. because of

  1757. his provision

  1758. of his son.

  1759. And so

  1760. that's part

  1761. of our

  1762. celebration

  1763. of Advent.

  1764. That's why

  1765. we look at

  1766. these passages

  1767. from Genesis

  1768. during this

  1769. month so

  1770. that we

  1771. can cast

  1772. a spotlight

  1773. on Jesus

  1774. and see

  1775. how great

  1776. and glorious

  1777. he is.

  1778. That we

  1779. can understand

  1780. how much

  1781. hope and

  1782. confidence and

  1783. peace that

  1784. we take

  1785. from the

  1786. fact that

  1787. he came

  1788. to this

  1789. earth as

  1790. a man.

  1791. We can

  1792. look and

  1793. see and

  1794. understand

  1795. more than

  1796. Abraham did

  1797. how much

  1798. God will

  1799. himself provide

  1800. the sacrifice.

  1801. And God

  1802. continues to

  1803. provide for

  1804. us even

  1805. now today.

  1806. He provides

  1807. for us in

  1808. the way that

  1809. he provided

  1810. for the

  1811. Israelites in

  1812. the wilderness

  1813. whose shoes

  1814. didn't wear

  1815. out.

  1816. He provides

  1817. for us by

  1818. the power of

  1819. his Holy

  1820. Spirit,

  1821. changing our

  1822. tastes and

  1823. our desires.

  1824. God provides

  1825. for us through

  1826. his word and

  1827. the wisdom and

  1828. counsel and

  1829. support of the

  1830. church and

  1831. Christians around

  1832. us.

  1833. It at times

  1834. feels like God

  1835. is asking the

  1836. impossible of

  1837. us and he

  1838. provides everything

  1839. we need to

  1840. obey him and

  1841. to follow him.

  1842. God provided

  1843. everything Abraham

  1844. needed to

  1845. obey.

  1846. He provides

  1847. everything that

  1848. we need to

  1849. obey as

  1850. well.

  1851. And of

  1852. course,

  1853. ultimately,

  1854. he provides

  1855. the greater

  1856. and greatest

  1857. sacrifice.

  1858. He provides

  1859. his own

  1860. son, Jesus

  1861. Christ, as

  1862. the ultimate

  1863. proof of his

  1864. faithfulness to

  1865. us.

  1866. That there is

  1867. nothing greater

  1868. or more powerful

  1869. that we can look

  1870. to to see

  1871. God's love

  1872. and his

  1873. authority in

  1874. this world.

  1875. It's like Paul

  1876. tells us in

  1877. Romans 8,

    Romans 8:31

  1878. verses 31 and

  1879. 32, if he

  1880. gave us his

  1881. son, how

  1882. will he not

  1883. also give us

  1884. everything else?

  1885. Why would he

  1886. not also give

  1887. us everything we

  1888. need to follow

  1889. him and love

  1890. him and obey

  1891. him?

  1892. And so even in

  1893. the most trying

  1894. situations, we

  1895. remain faithful

  1896. because we know

  1897. that God remains

  1898. faithful to his

  1899. covenant.

  1900. He will not

  1901. leave us and

  1902. he will not

  1903. forsake us.

  1904. And so we can

  1905. take the words

  1906. of verse 14 as

  1907. our own.

  1908. So Abraham

  1909. called the name

  1910. of that place,

  1911. the Lord will

  1912. provide.

  1913. As it is said

  1914. to this day on

  1915. the mount of

  1916. the Lord, it

  1917. shall be

  1918. provided.

  1919. Let's pray.

  1920. Our Father in

  1921. heaven, we thank

  1922. you for the hope

  1923. and the confidence

  1924. that we can take

  1925. in your love and

  1926. your provision for

  1927. us.

  1928. We thank you

  1929. that you never

  1930. ask us to do

  1931. something without

  1932. also providing the

  1933. resources and

  1934. power that we

  1935. need to do it.

  1936. And we thank you

  1937. that we see that

  1938. in this story of

  1939. Abraham and we see

1940. it as you work in

  1941. our own lives.

  1942. We ask that you,

  1943. by your spirit,

  1944. would grow our

  1945. faith more and

  1946. more, that we

  1947. would trust you,

  1948. and we would love

  1949. you and believe you

  1950. no matter what.

  1951. We ask these

  1952. things in the

  1953. mighty name of

  1954. Jesus Christ.

  1955. Amen.
