  1. Good morning. My name is Matthew Capone and I'm the pastor here at Shine Mountain Presbyterian Church and it's my joy to bring God's Word to you today.

  2. A special welcome if you're new or visiting with us. We're glad that you're here and we're glad that you're here.

  3. Not because we're trying to fill seats, but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  4. And as we follow Jesus together, we become convinced there's no one so good, they don't need God's grace, and no one so bad that they can't have it.

  5. Which is why we come back week after week to hear what God has to say to us in His Word.

  6. We're finishing this morning our series for Advent in the book of Genesis and we're jumping forward.

  7. Last Sunday we were in Genesis chapter 22 and now we're going forward all the way to chapter 49.

    Genesis 22 chapter mention

  8. So it means that we've skipped a large part of the story, but if you're familiar with the book of Genesis, you know that we've tracked the story of Abraham,

  9. followed by Isaac, Jacob, and Joseph.

  10. And we're coming to this story now where Jacob, also called Israel, calls his sons to him to give them a blessing.

  11. And so I'm going to invite you to turn there with me, Genesis chapter 49.

    Genesis 49 chapter mention

  12. You can turn in your worship guide or in your Bible or in your phone.

  13. No matter where you turn, remember that this is God's Word and God tells us that His Word is more precious than gold, even the finest gold.

  14. And it's sweeter than honey, even honey that comes straight from the honeycomb.

  15. And so that's why we read now Genesis chapter 49, starting at verse 1.

    Genesis 49 chapter mention

  16. And now we're going to skip to verse 8.

  17. Verse 9.

  18. Verse 11.

  19. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's Word.

  20. Our Father in heaven, we thank you again that you speak to us as you always do through your Word.

  21. And we also confess that we come this morning with many distractions.

  22. We come with the normal, everyday distractions that hit us week by week of work and family and emails and phone calls and text messages.

  23. And we also come to you with the special distractions of this season.

  24. As we rush from event to event, as we worry about what to buy and who to buy it for,

  25. as we look forward and plan all the details of our celebrations later this week.

  26. We ask that you would help us this morning.

  27. That you would help us to reorient our minds and to fix our eyes on you.

  28. That no matter the distractions that face us, we would see Jesus now as you show him to us in your Word.

  29. That we wouldn't miss his glory and his beauty.

  30. We ask that you would show us our desperate need for your grace.

  31. And you'd also show us how you meet us at that very same point of need.

  32. And we ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

  33. Amen.

  34. In October of 2019, feels like more than two years ago, but only about two years ago,

  35. the national news broke with shock and curiosity and amusement

  36. because the rapper and fashion designer, Kanye West, came out with his new album,

  37. which he called Jesus is King.

  38. Now, if you're familiar with Kanye, you know this was partially surprising

  39. because most of his albums had been about him worshipping himself more than anyone else.

  40. But this album got a lot of attention as people questioned

  41. whether Kanye's conversion to Christianity was true and authentic.

  42. Now, for many people, the surprising part was the fact that Kanye was the one

  43. who had come out with this album.

  44. I'm going to suggest for you this morning, though,

  45. that there is at least one other very surprising element of this

  46. that was overlooked, perhaps, by many, and that is this.

  47. Kanye tells us that his album was meant to be an expression of the gospel.

  48. And if his album was meant to be that, we would have expected a different title, right?

  49. In America, we would have said, Jesus is Savior, right?

  50. Or Jesus saves.

  51. That's the phrase that we're familiar with.

  52. That's the way that Christians in America talk.

  53. If we saw a billboard or a bumper sticker, that's what it would read for us.

  54. It would just say, Jesus saves.

  55. Come to salvation in Jesus.

  56. But in fact, Kanye is highlighting something for us that's important to remember,

  57. which is that Jesus' salvation cannot be separated from his kingship.

  58. Jesus as king is actually an essential part of the proclamation of the gospel.

  59. And so as we've gone through the book of Genesis together,

  60. we've seen a variety of categories.

  61. Remember Genesis 3.

  62. Genesis 3.

  63. We see one of the most neglected aspects of Jesus today,

  64. and that is Jesus as our king.

  65. And in fact, that's something that we maybe overlook,

  66. but we celebrate and sing about during Christmas.

  67. It's one of the reasons, by the way, that we sing and why songs are important.

  68. They shape our theology.

  69. So this morning, we sang,

  70. O Come, O Come, Emmanuel, which says this,

  71. O Come, O King of Nations, find.

  72. We also sang the first Noel, where we said over and over,

  73. Born is the king of Israel.

  74. If you come on Christmas Eve this Friday,

  75. we're going to sing Joy to the World, which says this,

  76. Let the earth receive her king.

  77. We're also going to sing Joyful Joyful We Adore You,

  78. which says, Praise resounds as earth rejoices in the birth of Christ the king.

  79. And so we're going to do something simple this morning.

  80. As we look at Genesis chapter 49,

    Genesis 49 chapter mention

  81. we're simply going to dream together.

  82. We're going to be reminded of what type of king Jesus is.

  83. And we're going to dream together

  84. and be reminded of what kind of kingdom it is that he brings.

  85. What is it going to look like?

  86. Why is this promise in prediction that we find here?

  87. Why is it actually good news?

  88. We're going to have something of a movie preview here.

  89. We're going to get a taste.

  90. We're going to get a small picture of what it is that we're looking forward to,

  91. what it is that we're longing for and celebrating and singing about at Advent.

  92. We're going to get a contour, a bit of an outline of what is to come.

  93. And as we do this, it's important to remember that we,

  94. as we live our lives in this world,

  95. we look to all sorts of kings and places and people and experiences

  96. to bring in a perfect world.

  97. But what the Bible reminds us of is that it is Jesus

  98. who is our only hope to bring a world without suffering and without pain.

  99. And so it's tempting to walk around looking 20 feet ahead of us,

  100. just seeing what's before our feet.

  101. What we're going to do this morning is actually look up.

  102. We're going to bring our eyes up and look up at the horizon.

  103. That we would have a greater and broader perspective of this world

  104. and Jesus' role in it.

  105. That we would know the great hope that we have

  106. as we look forward to the King who has come

  107. and also the King who is coming.

  108. And Genesis chapter 49 is going to help us with that.

    Genesis 49 chapter mention

  109. So I'm going to jump right in.

  110. We're given this prediction by Jacob, also known as Israel,

  111. as what's going to happen with the tribe of Judah.

  112. And you might be wondering what in the world this has to do with Jesus.

  113. And in a sense, that's a fair question

  114. because he's talking about something

  115. that's going to have some fulfillment

  116. in the near future rather than the far future.

  117. But Judah is also the tribe from which Jesus comes.

  118. And so there's multiple layers to this prophecy

  119. that he gives us about his son Judah,

  120. this tribe that's going to become great in Israel.

  121. Some of it we're going to see fulfilled in King David,

  122. the greatest king of Israel.

  123. King David, however, points us forward to King Jesus.

  124. And so when we see these things,

  125. they are true in one sense of David,

  126. true in an ultimate and fuller sense in Jesus.

  127. And so we see first in chapter 8

  128. that we are going to have this king

  129. who is going to be ruling here over Judah.

  130. He's going to be the greatest of all the tribes of Israel.

  131. In fact, this is something that we know

  132. as you read the genealogies around Advent.

  133. If you read Matthew chapter 1, verse 1,

    Matthew 1:1

  134. what does it say about Jesus?

  135. It says he's the son of David, the son of Abraham.

  136. So we're meant to be reminded that Jesus is the one

  137. who is pointing us back to these promises made to Judah.

  138. Jesus is born in Bethlehem, also known as the city of David.

  139. So he shares a birthplace with the great king.

  140. He shares that origin of the tribe of Judah.

  141. And so David for us is the proximate king of Israel.

  142. He's the proximate fulfillment of this.

  143. He is not the ultimate king from the tribe of Judah.

  144. We're told who that is in the book of Revelation,

  145. the very end of the Bible.

  146. Revelation chapter 5, verse 5 tells us this,

    Revelation 5:5

  147. and one of the elders said to me,

  148. weep no more.

  149. Behold, the line of the tribe of Judah,

  150. the root of David has conquered

  151. so that he can open the scroll and its seven seals.

  152. In other words, Jesus is the lion from the tribe of Judah.

  153. He comes as the tribe that's greatest

  154. among all the tribes of Israel.

  155. That's what we're told here in verse 8.

  156. Your brothers shall praise you.

  157. Your father's sons shall bow down before you.

  158. We find out here, though, he's not just a leader over Judah.

  159. He's also going to be victorious over many enemies.

  160. So we see the first picture again in verse 8.

  161. We're told your hand shall be on the neck of your enemies.

  162. Now, if your hand is on the neck of your enemies,

  163. this is a way of saying that the battle is over.

  164. It is time for that person to tap out.

  165. They are on the ground.

  166. This is a picture that we're being given

  167. of dominance and power and victory.

  168. And if that weren't enough,

  169. we see the same thing in verse 9.

  170. We have this picture of this lion

  171. who's going out and is successful in killing prey.

  172. He's a wonderful predator.

  173. Verse 9, Judah is a lion's cub.

  174. From the prey, my son, you have gone up,

  175. which is a way of saying this lion has killed another animal.

  176. Now he's going to go on the hunt again.

  177. He stooped down.

  178. He crouched as a lion.

  179. In other words, this lion has finished with one prey.

  180. He's sitting and waiting for another.

  181. No one wants to mess with him.

  182. That's why we're told at the very end of verse 9,

  183. who dares rouse him?

  184. In other words, leave this lion alone.

  185. He is not just the king of Israel.

  186. He's also victorious in battle.

  187. And so this gives us our first picture here

  188. of what it is that we're longing for

  189. as we lift our eyes up from 20 feet in front of us

  190. and we look up at the horizon

  191. to get a bigger picture of this world

  192. and what is coming for it.

  193. You know that if you've ever been in a foreign country

  194. for any amount of time,

  195. you begin to think about all the things

  196. that you miss in your home country.

  197. You begin to think about all the things

  198. that you long for.

  199. Maybe you even make a list

  200. of what you can't wait to get back to.

  201. Maybe it's Reese's peanut butter cups.

  202. Maybe it's the large variety of soft drinks

  203. that we have access to in America.

  204. Maybe it's simply being back in a place

  205. where the language of the country

  206. is also your language.

  207. As Christians, we want to have this same sort of longing

  208. for our true home,

  209. the home where Jesus reigns and rules as king.

  210. And so if we're going to make a list

  211. of what we long for,

  212. what we learn about this lion

  213. is he's going to rule a place that looks like this.

  214. It's going to be a place

  215. where bullies don't win anymore.

  216. That's what his kingdom is going to look like.

  217. It's going to look like a place

  218. where the powerful don't oppress the weak.

  219. Instead, they use their power to protect them.

  220. One of my favorite definitions of authority is this.

  221. Good and true authority is when the person

  222. who has authority over you cares about you

  223. more than you care about yourself.

  224. They love you more than you love you.

  225. That's what this king is going to be like.

  226. This kingdom where this lion conquers all his enemies

  227. is going to be the type of kingdom

  228. where when you go to check on your relatives

  229. in the nursing home,

  230. you're not going to worry about

  231. whether someone stole something from them

  232. or took advantage of them.

  233. In fact, there won't be nursing homes.

  234. We'll have restored and full bodies.

  235. This is going to be the kind of kingdom,

  236. the kingdom ruled by this powerful lion

  237. where when you walk to your car at night,

  238. you don't worry about

  239. who might be lurking in the dark.

  240. This is the sort of kingdom

  241. when you're driving around,

  242. you don't wonder if you remember to lock your door.

  243. This is the sort of kingdom

  244. where you're not going to buy insurance

  245. for identity theft.

  246. LifeLock is going to be out of business.

  247. You're not going to worry about

  248. how secure your passwords are.

  249. You're not going to worry about

  250. changing them every three months,

  251. and you're not going to be concerned

  252. of whether they have the right number of letters

  253. and symbols and exclamation marks.

  254. You're not going to worry about

  255. whether the police show up in time.

  256. You're not going to feel any need

  257. as you go through your life

  258. to conceal carry.

  259. That's going to be the type of kingdom

  260. that Jesus rules over.

  261. That's what we see in this lion.

  262. Yes, he is gracious and kind,

  263. and he is powerful and ferocious.

  264. The king who comes from Judah,

  265. verse 9, is a lion's cub.

  266. He crouches down as a lion.

  267. And so no one dares to rouse him.

  268. This king, however,

  269. is not just going to be powerful.

  270. He's also going to be a worldwide king.

  271. We see this expansion

  272. from just ruling over tribes

  273. to ruling over the entire world

  274. in verse 10.

  275. The scepter shall not depart from Judah

  276. or the ruler's staff

  277. from between his feet

  278. until tribute comes to him.

  279. And here's the key part.

  280. And to him shall be the obedience

  281. of the peoples.

  282. Tribute comes to him.

  283. This is something that's going to happen

  284. for the worldwide king.

  285. All the nations are going to come

  286. and worship him.

  287. The Davidic king,

  288. the one who's meant to be

  289. the great ruler over all of Israel,

  290. is not just going to rule Israel.

  291. He is going to rule the entire world.

  292. This rule is going to expand.

  293. It's going to grow.

  294. And again, we see this

  295. in Matthew's genealogy.

  296. After we're told

  297. where Jesus comes from,

  298. that he's the descendant

  299. of Abraham and David,

  300. we see wise men

  301. who come to visit him,

  302. bringing gifts from afar,

  303. which is the first fulfillment

  304. of this king

  305. receiving tribute

  306. from the nations.

  307. Okay?

  308. Yes, Jesus is a man

  309. come to earth

  310. to die for our sins,

  311. and he's also the king.

  312. That's what the magi

  313. know and understand.

  314. They're bringing tribute

  315. as people from other nations.

  316. And so that's the beginning

  317. of the fulfillment

  318. of this promise.

  319. We see it in a small part

  320. in King David

  321. from the tribe of Judah,

  322. but of course,

  323. he doesn't fulfill it, right?

  324. David does not rule

  325. over the entire world.

  326. Instead, we look

  327. to the great and glorious future

  328. that only comes with Jesus,

  329. often referred to

  330. as David's greater son.

  331. And so there's going to be

  332. this worldwide kingdom.

  333. In fact, we're told about it

  334. in Revelation chapter 7.

    Revelation 7 chapter mention

  335. There's a part

  336. that we still look forward to,

  337. right, as we're longing

  338. and thinking about

  339. what the kingdom will be.

  340. Revelation chapter 7

    Revelation 7 chapter mention

  341. says this,

  342. This is this picture

  343. of the entire world

  344. coming to worship God.

  345. We get a similar vision

  346. in Revelation chapter 21.

    Revelation 21 chapter mention

  347. We're told this,

  348. The city, that is the New Jerusalem,

  349. has no need of sun or moon

  350. to shine on it,

  351. for the glory of God

  352. gives its light,

  353. and its lamp is the Lamb.

  354. By its light will the nations walk,

  355. and the kings of the earth

  356. will bring their glory into it.

  357. It's another picture

  358. of the tribute coming in.

  359. And its gates will never be shut by day,

  360. and there will be no night there.

  361. They will bring into it

  362. the glory and honor of the nations,

  363. but nothing unclean

  364. will ever enter it,

  365. nor anyone who does

  366. what is detestable or false,

  367. but only those who are written

  368. in the Lamb's book of life.

  369. So John in Revelation

  370. is giving us another picture

  371. of all the nations coming

  372. to worship this worldwide king.

  373. He's helping us see

  374. what we've already been told

  375. in verse 10,

  376. Until tribute comes to him,

  377. and to him

  378. shall be the obedience

  379. of the peoples.

  380. And so what do we dream about then

  381. as we look at Jesus' kingdom?

  382. Well, it's going to be

  383. the end of wars.

  384. It's going to be

  385. the end of international politics.

  386. When Jesus is king,

  387. we're not going to worry

  388. about problems

  389. between Russia and the Ukraine.

  390. When Jesus is king,

  391. we're not going to worry

  392. about the rise

  393. of rogue states.

  394. All the nations

  395. are simply going to come

  396. and bring their tribute to him.

  397. He is going to be

  398. the worldwide king.

  399. This passage, though,

  400. doesn't just tell us

  401. about Jesus' glory

  402. and his rule,

  403. his power,

  404. his dominion.

  405. It also gives us

  406. one final picture

  407. of what this world

  408. is going to look like,

  409. what the kingdom

  410. of the Lion of Judah

  411. is going to offer to us.

  412. And it's going to be

  413. a place of great

  414. and tremendous wealth.

  415. And so look with me

  416. at verses 11 and 12.

  417. In verse 11,

  418. we're told he's going

  419. to bind his foal

  420. to the vine

  421. and his donkey's colt

  422. to the choice vine,

  423. which may seem

  424. enigmatic at first,

  425. but what the author

  426. of Genesis is trying

  427. to tell us is this.

  428. There's going to be

  429. an incredible grape harvest.

  430. Okay?

  431. This grape harvest

  432. is going to be so great

  433. that the man in charge of it

  434. is not going to hesitate

  435. to tie his donkey

  436. to one of the grape vines.

  437. In other words,

  438. he has so many grapes

  439. and so many grape vines,

  440. he couldn't care less

  441. if the donkey eats up

  442. some of his best.

  443. He has more of the best

  444. than he knows

  445. what to do with.

  446. So he ties a donkey to it

  447. and doesn't even think about it.

  448. And it's shocking here, right?

  449. Because we,

  450. if we're people living

  451. and receiving this message

  452. for the first time,

  453. we're thinking

  454. as agricultural farmers,

  455. what a reckless thing it is

  456. to tie your donkey

  457. to your grape vine.

  458. There's so much wealth,

  459. it just doesn't matter.

  460. There's always going to be

  461. more precious grapes.

  462. So you can let the donkey

  463. run free

  464. and eat the finest things

  465. you have.

  466. It would be like this.

  467. It would be like someone

  468. in America,

  469. me telling you,

  470. you know what?

  471. The kingdom is going to be

  472. so great

  473. that people are going to

  474. cook up whole wagyu steaks

  475. and give them to their dog.

  476. Okay?

  477. Not just the scraps.

  478. No.

  479. The dog is going to get

  480. his own steak.

  481. Okay?

  482. That's how much abundance

  483. and wealth is here.

  484. People are going to buy

  485. filet mignons,

  486. they're going to cut them

  487. in fine strips

  488. and they're going to put them

  489. in the cat bowl.

  490. That's how much abundance

  491. there is in this world.

  492. Okay?

  493. That's the image

  494. we're given here

  495. of the wine.

  496. What would you know

  497. about that person?

  498. If that person was

  499. cooking up whole wagyu steaks

  500. and giving them to the dog

  501. and cooking up a filet mignon

  502. and putting it in the cat's bowl,

  503. what would you say

  504. about that person?

  505. Yeah, you could say

  506. they're crazy.

  507. You could also say,

  508. wow,

  509. that person has

  510. a lot of money.

  511. Right?

  512. In this kingdom,

  513. there is going to be

  514. an overabundance.

  515. That's going to be

  516. how much wealth

  517. this kingdom has.

  518. People are going to tie

  519. their donkeys

  520. to great grapevines.

  521. They're going to let

  522. their animals eat

  523. their finest food.

  524. That's the same image

  525. we have here

  526. in verses 11 and 12.

  527. So verse 11,

  528. at the end,

  529. he's washed his garments

  530. in wine

  531. and his vesture

  532. in the blood of grapes.

  533. Now there's two ways

  534. of taking this.

  535. One is,

  536. there's so much wine,

  537. they're treating it like water.

  538. So they're washing

  539. their clothes

  540. in $500 bottles of wine

  541. because they just have

  542. so many of them.

  543. The other possibility

  544. is that they're

  545. threshing out this wine,

  546. they're stomping on it

  547. to make wine,

  548. and there's so many grapes,

  549. it's just squirting up

  550. all over their clothes

  551. and it's washing it.

  552. That's how abundant it is.

  553. Either way,

  554. the point is the same.

  555. There's this unprecedented wealth.

  556. There's just everything

  557. that you would need

  558. and more, right?

  559. Verse 12,

  560. also some debate

  561. over what this means.

  562. The big point of verse 12

  563. is that they are full

  564. of health and vitality.

  565. Okay?

  566. They have this food

  567. that is making them strong.

  568. It's been pointed out

  569. that the Bible

  570. begins and ends

  571. in this place

  572. of great wealth.

  573. Genesis chapter 1,

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  574. the Garden of Eden.

  575. Adam and Eve

  576. are given dominion

  577. over the whole earth

  578. and they're told

  579. that every plant and tree

  580. is theirs for food.

  581. And then if we fast forward

  582. to the last book

  583. of the Bible,

  584. Revelation chapter 21,

    Revelation 21 chapter mention

  585. the New Jerusalem

  586. as it's described

  587. is a place

  588. of incredible wealth.

  589. Now one of the most

  590. famous descriptions

  591. comes from verse 21

  592. which tells us this,

  593. the street of the city

  594. was pure gold

  595. like transparent glass.

  596. There's so much gold,

  597. they're paving

  598. the streets with it.

  599. There's so much wine

  600. and good grapes,

  601. they're letting their animals

  602. eat the very best food.

  603. We want an age

  604. of prosperity, right?

  605. It's common for

  606. there to be talk

  607. about the end of poverty

  608. or the end of hunger.

  609. We want abundance

  610. to be normalized.

  611. We want to have enough

  612. that we don't worry

  613. about budgeting, right?

  614. Bad news is this,

  615. that's not going to happen

  616. in this world.

  617. No one who tells you

  618. that they have a plan

  619. to make it happen

  620. understands the state

  621. of humanity.

  622. Good news,

  623. it will happen.

  624. It's just not going to happen

  625. with an earthly king.

  626. We can't have it

  627. with a mere human.

  628. And so again,

  629. as we dream together,

  630. as we work

  631. our imagination,

  632. I want you to think

  633. about this.

  634. This is what

  635. the kingdom

  636. that the lion

  637. from the tribe of Judah

  638. is going to look like.

  639. People are going to work

  640. simply for the joy of it.

  641. You're not going to worry

  642. about whether you've

  643. worked enough

  644. or whether you've

  645. saved enough.

  646. You're not going to worry

  647. about whether you have

  648. enough to retire.

  649. couples will not argue

  650. about finances.

  651. In fact,

  652. Matthew chapter 22

    Matthew 22 chapter mention

  653. tells us there won't be

  654. marriage in heaven.

  655. You're not going to worry

  656. about college funds.

  657. There's going to be

  658. plenty

  659. and more than plenty.

  660. You're not going to feel shame

  661. about not having as much

  662. as other people

  663. in the community around you.

  664. You're not going to feel shame

  665. about not being able

  666. to afford

  667. the same experiences

  668. or provide the same things

  669. for your family.

  670. There is not going to be

  671. any more poverty.

  672. Poverty is not an issue

  673. when people are washing

  674. their clothes

  675. in fine wine, right?

  676. Parents won't pressure

  677. their kids

  678. into lucrative careers.

  679. People won't be chasing

  680. their dreams

  681. by trying to leverage assets

  682. and generate passive income.

  683. There's just going to be

  684. this abundance.

  685. There's going to be

  686. this overflowing

  687. in the kingdom.

  688. There aren't going to be

  689. arguments about

  690. which money belongs

  691. to who.

  692. Lawyers will not be

  693. helping resolve

  694. inheritance disputes.

  695. They're going to have

  696. a lot less business.

  697. There's just going to be

  698. more than enough

  699. in every category.

  700. There's going to be

  701. more than you can ask

  702. or imagine.

  703. As you know,

  704. presidents love

  705. to take credit

  706. for economic growth.

  707. Anything good

  708. that happens

  709. while they're in office?

  710. Brag about a booming

  711. economy, right?

  712. This kingdom

  713. is going to be

  714. the pinnacle.

  715. It's going to be

  716. the most booming economy.

  717. It's going to be

  718. when we see

  719. the greatest economy

  720. of all time.

  721. Now at this point

  722. you might be wondering

  723. what in the world

  724. does any of this

  725. have to do

  726. with the gospel?

  727. Gospel, right?

  728. Our belief that Jesus

  729. comes to die

  730. and save sinners.

  731. Well,

  732. Jesus is the Savior

  733. and he is saving you

  734. from something.

  735. He is saving you

  736. from God's wrath

  737. and his punishment.

  738. However,

  739. Jesus is not just

  740. saving you

  741. from something.

  742. Jesus is saving you

  743. into something.

  744. Jesus is saving you

  745. into a kingdom

  746. where he is king.

  747. He's saving you

  748. into a kingdom

  749. where he is king.

  750. And so we get to see

  751. this picture here

  752. of how the story ends.

  753. If you're a Christian,

  754. you don't know

  755. the future in one sense.

  756. You don't know

  757. what the rest of your life

  758. is going to look like.

  759. You do know

  760. the future

  761. in another sense.

  762. You know,

  763. no matter what happens

  764. to you in this world,

  765. how your story

  766. is going to end.

  767. Your story

  768. is going to end

  769. in this kingdom

  770. that we've been

  771. dreaming about.

  772. Your story

  773. is going to end

  774. in a place

  775. that is ruled

  776. by this king.

  777. And so that's

  778. what we sang

  779. right before

  780. the sermon,

  781. O Jerusalem.

  782. Jerusalem.

  783. It's a story

  784. of longing.

  785. It's a song

  786. of longing.

  787. It's a song

  788. of looking forward

  789. to the future

  790. that we know

  791. is coming.

  792. And so we talked

  793. about the wealth

  794. together when we sang

  795. this.

  796. They have told us

  797. of a table

  798. where the poor

  799. are honored guests,

  800. where all the weary

  801. wanderers

  802. come in

  803. to bless

  804. and rest.

  805. That's the place

  806. where people

  807. tie their donkeys

  808. to the finest

  809. grapevines.

  810. that's the place

  811. where people

  812. serve steaks

  813. to their pets.

  814. It's going

  815. to be a feast.

  816. Now Jesus,

  817. our Lord Jesus

  818. also tells us

  819. about a feast

  820. in Matthew

    Matthew 22 chapter mention

  821. chapter 22.

  822. He tells this

  823. parable

  824. of the wedding

  825. feast.

  826. You're welcome

  827. to turn there

  828. with me now.

  829. It's in Matthew

    Matthew 22:1–14

  830. chapter 22

  831. verses 1

  832. through 14.

  833. And he tells

  834. them this.

  835. The kingdom

  836. of heaven

  837. may be compared

  838. to a king

  839. who gave a wedding

  840. feast for his son

  841. and sent his servants

  842. to call those

  843. who were invited

  844. to the wedding feast,

  845. but they would not

  846. come.

  847. Again,

  848. he sent other

  849. servants saying,

  850. tell those

  851. who are invited,

  852. see,

  853. I have prepared

  854. my dinner,

  855. my oxen,

  856. and my fat calves

  857. have been slaughtered

  858. and everything is ready.

  859. Come to the wedding feast.

  860. So Jesus has a feast.

  861. He's inviting people.

  862. Many aren't listening.

  863. Verse 5.

  864. But they paid no attention

  865. and went off,

  866. one to his farm,

  867. another to his business,

  868. while the rest seized

  869. his servants,

  870. treated them shamefully,

  871. and killed them.

  872. The king was angry,

  873. and he sent his troops

  874. and destroyed those

  875. murderers and burned

  876. their city.

  877. Then he said to his

  878. servants,

  879. the wedding feast

  880. is ready,

  881. but those invited

  882. are not worthy.

  883. Go therefore

  884. to the main roads

  885. and invite to the wedding

  886. feast as many

  887. as you find.

  888. And those servants

  889. went out into the roads

  890. and gathered all

  891. whom they found,

  892. both bad and good.

  893. So the wedding hall

  894. was filled with guests.

  895. In other words,

  896. Jesus is telling us this.

  897. There is a feast

  898. and a kingdom

  899. that he has prepared.

  900. And it is for those

  901. who accept his invitation

  902. to the wedding.

  903. This kingdom

  904. is for

  905. and is only for

  906. those who have faith

  907. and hope

  908. in Jesus Christ.

  909. It is for

  910. and only for

  911. those who have

  912. looked to Christ

  913. and seen

  914. that he is the one

  915. who lived the perfect life

  916. that they should have lived.

  917. He is the one

  918. who died the death

  919. that they should have died

  920. accepting

  921. his sacrifice

  922. on their behalf,

  923. knowing that

  924. when he died,

  925. he took

  926. the wrath of God

  927. that we deserve.

  928. For anyone

  929. and everyone

  930. who has faith

  931. in Jesus Christ,

  932. this is the feast

  933. that is waiting for them.

  934. This is the wedding feast.

  935. This is the picture

  936. that we're given

  937. about the kingdom

  938. that is ruled

  939. by the lion

  940. from the tribe

  941. of Judah.

  942. And so the final question

  943. for us this morning

  944. is this,

  945. will you be

  946. at the feast?

  947. Will you come

  948. when the king

  949. invites you?

  950. If you have more questions

  951. about that,

  952. one of the things

  953. that we've done recently

  954. in our worship guide,

  955. you'll see

  956. near the end,

  957. we have a long

  958. explanation

  959. of what it means

  960. to be someone

  961. who follows

  962. after the king

  963. on page 10.

  964. And so,

  965. not necessarily now,

  966. but I invite you

  967. to take your worship guide

  968. home with you

  969. to review it.

  970. If you have more questions

  971. about this king

  972. or this kingdom,

  973. of course,

  974. we're happy to talk

  975. with you.

  976. And I invite you

  977. to look through

  978. that page

  979. and think about

  980. whether Jesus

  981. is your king,

  982. what it means

  983. for you to follow him

  984. and to trust him

  985. so that you can be

  986. someone who shows up

  987. to the wedding feast.

  988. Now,

  989. earlier,

  990. I gave you

  991. a list

  992. of Christmas hymns

  993. that we sang

  994. this morning

  995. that pointed

  996. to Jesus

  997. as our king.

  998. And there's one hymn

  999. that I didn't mention

  1000. on page 6

  1001. because we haven't

  1002. sung it yet.

  1003. But we're about

  1004. to sing it.

  1005. It's called

  1006. What Child Is This?

  1007. And first,

  1008. it tells us

  1009. in the chorus,

  1010. this is Christ,

  1011. the king

  1012. whom shepherds guard

  1013. and angels sing.

  1014. And then we're told

1015. this in the final verse.

  1016. So bring him incense,

  1017. gold, and myrrh.

  1018. Come, peasant king,

  1019. to own him.

  1020. The king of kings

  1021. salvation brings.

  1022. Let loving hearts

  1023. enthrone him.

1024. And so that's the hope

  1025. and command for us

  1026. as well,

  1027. that our hearts

  1028. would enthrone

  1029. this baby

  1030. who comes

  1031. into the world

  1032. not just as one

  1033. to die,

  1034. but one who comes

  1035. to rule and reign

  1036. as the king.

  1037. As the lion

  1038. from the tribe

  1039. of Judah.

  1040. Let's pray.

  1041. Our Father in heaven,

  1042. we praise you

  1043. and thank you

  1044. this morning

1045. that you give us hope

  1046. that no matter

  1047. what happens

  1048. in this world,

  1049. you are a king

  1050. who's bringing a kingdom.

1051. We ask that you would

  1052. use that truth

  1053. in our lives

  1054. to keep us

  1055. from despair

1056. and to grow our hope.

  1057. We ask that you

  1058. would remind us

  1059. of that,

  1060. that it would be

  1061. for the front

  1062. of our minds,

  1063. Father,

  1064. in the many distractions

  1065. that come against us

  1066. this week

  1067. and this coming year

1068. that we would never forget

1069. that you are our great savior

  1070. and our great king.

1071. We ask all these things

  1072. in the mighty name

  1073. of our king,

  1074. Jesus Christ.

  1075. Amen.

  1076. Amen.

1077. I invite you to stand

  1078. for our closing hymn.

  1079. Amen.
