  1. questions. So this is David, and he writes, I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart.

  2. I will recount of your wonderful deeds. I will be glad and exult in you. I will sing praise to your

  3. name, O Most High. When my enemies turn back, they stumble and perish before me, or they stumble and

  4. perish before your presence. For you have maintained my just cause. You have sat on the

  5. throne giving righteous judgment. You have rebuked the nations. You have made the wicked perish.

  6. You have blotted out their name forever and ever. The enemy came to an end in everlasting ruins.

  7. Their cities you rooted out. The very memory of them has perished. But the Lord sits enthroned

  8. forever. He has established his throne for justice. He judges the world with righteousness.

  9. The people with uprightness. The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed and a stronghold in times of

  10. trouble. And those who know your name put their trust in you. For you, O Lord, have not forsaken those

  11. who seek you. Sing praises to the Lord who sits enthroned in Zion. Tell among the peoples his deeds.

  12. For he who avenges blood is mindful of them. He does not forget the cry of the afflicted.

  13. Be gracious to me, O Lord. See my affliction from those who hate me.

  14. O you who lift me up from the gates of death.

  15. So David begins this psalm, and I'm just going to say this psalm, I mean 9 and 10, with praise to God.

  16. That's his first posture in addressing the evil and wickedness, not only within this world, but also that was in David.

  17. He begins with the praise of God, telling God who he is.

  18. I will recount of your wonderful deeds. David chooses to begin his plea for help with the God who

  19. who is worthy to be praised. Notice, David doesn't say,

  20. I am righteous. God, this is not fair.

  21. He begins with the truth of,

  22. this is who God is from eternity past to eternity future.

  23. We read of what God has done in the past, so we are free to grieve over our present circumstance.

  24. And we plead with God to act as he has in the past.

  25. Okay, as you and I read the Bible, if you are someone who reads the Bible,

  26. you read of the history of God engaging his people,

  27. bringing comfort, bringing peace,

  28. meeting them in their present circumstance.

  29. And then you and I need to realize,

  30. where are we in our present circumstance?

  31. And to be honest about it.

  32. And what we are called to be encouraged by

  33. is the way that God has acted in the past,

  34. promised in the present.

  35. He is Emmanuel.

  36. He is God with us.

  37. And that he will meet us again in the future.

  38. The Lord is a stronghold for the oppressed,

  39. a stronghold in times of trouble.

  40. We are to remember.

  41. That's a lot of our reading of the Bible,

  42. is to remember.

  43. It's to remember,

  44. how did God meet the Israelites in the Old Testament?

  45. How has God met the people of God throughout history?

  46. Remember,

  47. that is the God of the Bible.

  48. And that is what he does.

  49. But the big problem is,

  50. we have our own personal expectations

  51. of this is how God needs to meet me today.

  52. And when God does not do that,

  53. we get frustrated.

  54. And we become disenfranchised

  55. with the God of the Bible

  56. and many times the church

  57. and other Christians.

  58. Because we've created this way

  59. that we assume God is gonna meet us.

  60. God is there.

  61. But the truth is,

  62. throughout Scripture,

  63. God is there.

  64. God is worthy of praise.

  65. And God knows.

  66. God is there.

  67. He was there in the past,

  68. throughout history,

  69. and he is there now with you.

  70. He is worthy of praise,

  71. always has been,

  72. always will be.

  73. And God knows.

  74. He's not surprised

  75. by whatever is going on in your life.

  76. He's not a surprise to him.

  77. And this is part of what we do every Sunday

  78. as people of faith in Christ,

  79. is that we gather with a community of believers

  80. to be reminded of these things.

  81. That God is there,

  82. God is worthy of praise,

  83. and God knows.

  84. And we hear words,

  85. and we sing words,

  86. and we recite words

  87. that carry these truths.

  88. So whenever you go home today,

  89. if you take your worship guide,

  90. worship bulletin with you,

  91. I encourage you,

  92. read through it.

  93. Because what you have been reminded of

  94. is these three things.

  95. And what does that mean for you

  96. as you wake up Monday morning?

  97. In this psalm,

  98. there's a cry of lament

  99. from King David.

  100. We don't like lament.

  101. It seems weak

  102. and maybe un-American.

  103. But the majority of the psalms are lament.

  104. Are people crying out to God

  105. for help.

  106. That they would know

  107. that God meets them

  108. in whatever struggle

  109. they are walking through.

  110. Lament

  111. is to be a normal part of our life.

  112. Lament is not saved

  113. for the day you grieve

  114. over someone's passing.

  115. Or someone's hurt against you.

  116. Lament is a part of every day of our life.

  117. That we are to lament

  118. that there is not only evil in this world,

  119. but there's also evil in our heart

  120. that has been unrefined.

  121. I think that's a greater lament.

  122. We are not called to ignore sorrow and evil

  123. that is around us.

  124. We are called to first turn to God

  125. and cry to him

  126. about the affliction we experience.

  127. And this goes for everyone.

  128. If you are five years old,

  129. if you are 12 years old,

  130. especially,

  131. we have five kids at our,

  132. well, four kids at our house,

  133. we have five kids total,

  134. one's 20,

  135. lives on our own,

  136. blah, blah, blah.

  137. But it's also,

  138. it's lamenting.

  139. It's allowing adolescents

  140. to have a deep theology of lament.

  141. I think I'm middle age.

  142. I'm 49.

  143. I don't know.

  144. Is that middle age?

  145. Or maybe it's old.

  146. I'm not sure.

  147. But there's a part of my life

  148. that I realize

  149. there's a part that I just need to lament

  150. and grieve.

  151. And what helps me

  152. is reading the Psalms.

  153. And recognizing,

  154. yeah,

  155. spiritually,

  156. I'm not as far along

  157. as I really thought

  158. I would be at 49.

  159. I thought I'd be

  160. a lot more spiritually mature.

  161. And those are some of the things

  162. that I cry out to God

  163. and turn to him

  164. and acknowledge

  165. my own failure.

  166. And I confess

  167. and repent

  168. knowing

  169. that Christ is the one

  170. who is perfect.

  171. It's Christ who's done

  172. everything right.

  173. as much as I'm called to,

  174. as a child of God,

  175. to live

  176. in the rightness

  177. of his righteousness.

  178. But I realize

  179. more and more

  180. as I grow

  181. that the only perfect

  182. person

  183. is the God-man,

  184. Jesus Christ.

  185. Christ.

  186. So think about

  187. your plea

  188. for mercy

  189. and lament.

  190. If you've ever

  191. even had one,

  192. maybe you haven't

  193. and that's fine.

  194. But think about

  195. where would you start

  196. with that plea?

  197. David here

  198. starts with

  199. praising

  200. the God

  201. of his righteousness.

  202. A call to God

  203. is where our plea

  204. is to begin

  205. and to end.

  206. Our plea is heard

  207. because God

  208. is a stronghold

  209. and it shows

  210. how we seek him.

  211. What does that mean

  212. in your lament,

  213. in your frustration,

  214. in your confusion

  215. of evil

  216. in this world

  217. and in your heart?

  218. What does it mean

  219. that you go to God

  220. first and last?

  221. And what does

  222. that look like?

  223. Verse 12

  224. says,

  225. he does not forget

  226. the cry

  227. of the afflicted.

  228. And maybe

  229. that is where

  230. you are right now

  231. in your life.

  232. That you are

  233. deeply

  234. hurt

  235. and afflicted.

  236. You are not

  237. forgotten.

  238. You are not

  239. forgotten.

  240. God sees

  241. and he hears

  242. and he is

  243. Emmanuel

  244. to you,

  245. God with us.

  246. That's who

  247. he is.

  248. So let's look

  249. at David's

  250. three pleas

  251. for help

  252. in this passage.

  253. His three pleas

  254. for help are,

  255. God,

  256. be gracious

  257. to me,

  258. let not evil

  259. prevail

  260. and forget

  261. not the afflicted.

  262. be gracious

  263. to me,

  264. let not evil

  265. prevail,

  266. forget not

  267. the afflicted.

  268. This shows

  269. the author

  270. David understands

  271. who God is

  272. and how humanity

  273. is called

  274. to come

  275. to God.

  276. We are to come

  277. to God

  278. only by his grace.

  279. Only by his grace.

  280. There is only

  281. one redeemer.

  282. There is only

  283. one mediator

  284. between God

  285. and man

  286. and it is

  287. the Lord

  288. Christ.

  289. And the God

  290. of the Bible

  291. is the great

  292. inviter.

  293. He is the

  294. great initiator

  295. and he is

  296. the God

  297. who moves

  298. toward you.

  299. Notice

  300. David does

  301. not plea

  302. for fairness.

  303. He does

  304. not plead

  305. for what

  306. he has

  307. earned

  308. but he

  309. has a

  310. proper

  311. perspective

  312. of God

  313. as God

  314. relates

  315. to his

  316. creation.

  317. By a plea

  318. for grace

  319. David is

  320. moving

  321. toward God

  322. and reconciliation

  323. only because

  324. God has

  325. invited him.

  326. and God

  327. has invited

  328. you.

  329. He has

  330. invited you

  331. to dwell

  332. within his

  333. house.

  334. He has

  335. invited you

  336. to be called

  337. one of his

  338. children.

  339. He has

  340. invited you

  341. to no longer

  342. be an

  343. orphan

  344. but to be

  345. a child

  346. of God.

  347. And as

  348. you wrestle

  349. through not

  350. only the

  351. evil that

  352. the sin

  353. that you

  354. struggle

  355. with

  356. but also

  357. the sin

  358. that you

  359. see outside

  360. of you

  361. it begins

  362. with

  363. accepting

  364. and living

  365. within that

  366. truth that

  367. you are a

  368. child of God

  369. and that only

  370. comes through

  371. faith in

  372. Christ and

  373. repentance of

  374. sin.

  375. And you

  376. are invited

  377. into that.

  378. So how

  379. does evil

  380. prevail?

  381. Well I

  382. can't fully

  383. answer that

  384. question.

  385. Obviously

  386. that's a

  387. deep

  388. deep

  389. question.

  390. There is

  391. evil in

  392. this world

  393. because this

  394. world is

  395. broken.

  396. This is

  397. not how it

  398. is supposed

  399. to be.

  400. And the

  401. only comfort

  402. I take

  403. in this

  404. is that

  405. there is a

  406. God who's

  407. in charge

  408. of everything.

  409. And he

  410. is not

  411. only

  412. ultimately

  413. wise and

  414. loving and

  415. gracious,

  416. he knows

  417. why

  418. everything

  419. happens

  420. and I

  421. don't.

  422. God's

  423. and that's

  424. just part

  425. of the

  426. mystery

  427. of living

  428. as a

  429. human

  430. being

  431. in

  432. God's

  433. creation.

  434. But there

  435. are a few

  436. things that we

  437. can understand

  438. of why does

  439. evil prevail?

  440. One, because

  441. we are self-centered

  442. and prideful.

  443. We are.

  444. Let's begin

  445. with us.

  446. Okay?

  447. Let's begin

  448. with us.

  449. We are.

  450. We're not

  451. looking outside

  452. of us.

  453. We are.

  454. And the

  455. only healing

  456. and restoration

  457. that we need

  458. is a

  459. redeemer.

  460. we long

  461. to build

  462. a value

  463. system

  464. that revolves

  465. around

  466. ourself.

  467. And we

  468. do that

  469. by ignoring

  470. God

  471. and the

  472. law of

  473. God.

  474. And we're

  475. pretty good

  476. at that.

  477. Aren't

  478. we?

  479. You can

  480. nod.

  481. I'll nod.

  482. Yeah,

  483. we are pretty

  484. good at

  485. that.

  486. verse 2

  487. says,

  488. in arrogance

  489. the wicked

  490. hotly pursue

  491. the poor.

  492. This desire

  493. is to

  494. fill

  495. self

  496. and

  497. ignorance

  498. that are

  499. made for

  500. something

  501. greater.

  502. It's to

  503. fulfill

  504. our own

  505. selfishness.

  506. And then

  507. we long

  508. for selfish

  509. prosperity.

  510. Verse 5,

  511. why do

  512. the selfish

  513. continue

  514. with selfish

  515. pursuits?

  516. Honestly,

  517. because at

  518. some level

  519. it works.

  520. Like,

  521. at some

  522. level

  523. it's

  524. functional.

  525. If we

  526. are selfish

  527. and we

  528. pursue

  529. our own

  530. selfish

  531. desires,

  532. at some

  533. level

  534. you and

  535. I will

  536. find

  537. satisfaction.

  538. Okay,

  539. that is

  540. just true.

  541. At some

  542. level.

  543. Ultimately,

  544. we begin

  545. to destroy

  546. our own

  547. soul,

  548. our own

  549. self,

  550. and the

  551. people

  552. around

  553. us.

  554. And it's

  555. only when

  556. we have

  557. the long

  558. view of

  559. life

  560. and we

  561. see that

  562. there is

  563. a creator

  564. and there

  565. is a

  566. redeemer

  567. and there

  568. is grace

  569. and there

  570. is mercy

  571. and God's

  572. spirit works

  573. within us

  574. that we

  575. can let

  576. those go.

  577. Think of

  578. the workaholic.

  579. The workaholic

  580. will continue

  581. in their

  582. work more

  583. and more

  584. and more

  585. thinking this

  586. is actually

  587. going to

  588. solve it

  589. but actually

  590. it's really

  591. a selfish

  592. thing for

  593. the workaholic.

  594. But what

  595. are we

  596. told

  597. from our

  598. culture?

  599. What we're

  600. told is

  601. well,

  602. the workaholic

  603. you're actually

  604. just not

  605. working hard

  606. enough.

  607. And then

  608. what does

  609. the workaholic

  610. do?

  611. You know

  612. what they

  613. say?

  614. Great.

  615. Now I

  616. have something

  617. more to

  618. do.

  619. And then

  620. they pursue

  621. that more

  622. and more

  623. and more.

  624. And it

  625. is the

  626. complete

  627. opposite

  628. of grace.

  629. It is

  630. the

  631. complete

  632. opposite

  633. of grace.

  634. Another

  635. struggle

  636. that we

  637. have

  638. in our

  639. pleas for

  640. help

  641. is security

  642. of self.

  643. Thinking

  644. I shall

  645. not be

  646. moved.

  647. I am

  648. the one

  649. who holds

  650. who I

  651. am.

  652. I am

  653. the one

  654. who gives

  655. myself

  656. significance.

  657. I am

  658. the one

  659. who is

  660. ultimately

  661. valuable.

  662. And when

  663. we say

  664. that,

  665. what we're

  666. doing

  667. is we're

  668. telling

  669. Christ

  670. and the

  671. God of

  672. the Bible

  673. who created

  674. us and

  675. loves us

  676. that they

  677. really

  678. don't know

  679. what they're

  680. doing.

  681. God's

  682. work of

  683. redemption

  684. is

  685. realigning

  686. these

  687. desires

  688. so we

  689. can be

  690. shaped

  691. by what

  692. is true

  693. and beautiful.

  694. You want

  695. to live

  696. a

  697. flourishing

  698. life?

  699. A

  700. flourishing

  701. life is

  702. understanding

  703. Christ

  704. is all

  705. in all.

  706. And in

  707. your

  708. affliction

  709. and that

  710. you dealing

  711. with the

  712. evil

  713. within you

  714. and the

  715. sinfulness

  716. that you

  717. and I

  718. have,

  719. you dealing

  720. with judgment

  721. and criticism

  722. from people

  723. outside of you,

  724. the only

  725. thing that

  726. heals and

  727. restores is

  728. Christ.

  729. it's not

  730. working

  731. harder.

  732. It's not

  733. being more

  734. wise.

  735. It's not

  736. being more

  737. articulate.

  738. It's not

  739. all of

  740. those things

  741. that is

  742. going to

  743. set you

  744. free.

  745. It's not

  746. another

  747. seminar.

  748. It's not

  749. another

  750. class.

  751. It's not

  752. another

  753. book.

  754. It is

  755. Christ.

  756. And so

  757. when you

  758. wake up

  759. tomorrow

  760. morning

  761. and your

  762. feet hit

  763. the floor,

  764. you have

  765. really two

  766. options.

  767. Your feet

  768. can hit

  769. the floor

  770. and you

  771. can say

  772. something in

  773. the realm

  774. of the

  775. beginning

  776. of Psalm

  777. 9 that

  778. God,

  779. you are

  780. worthy of

  781. praise.

  782. Or you

  783. can hit

  784. the floor

  785. and say,

  786. I'm just

  787. going to do

  788. the best I

  789. can.

  790. I'm going to

  791. work really

  792. hard and

  793. this day

  794. hopefully will

  795. turn out much

  796. better than the

  797. next day.

  798. And then

  799. the question

  800. is, what

  801. will you

  802. do Tuesday

  803. morning?

  804. What will

  805. you do

  806. Wednesday

  807. morning?

  808. Because you

  809. will face

  810. affliction.

  811. God does

  812. not forget

  813. the

  814. afflicted.

  815. And in

  816. these

  817. pleas, we

  818. see the

  819. suffering of

  820. Jesus on

  821. our behalf.

  822. For the

  823. afflicted,

  824. the just

  825. for the

  826. unjust,

  827. the innocent

  828. for the

  829. guilty,

  830. the perfect

  831. for the

  832. broken.

  833. The

  834. opposite of

  835. these are

  836. the cries

  837. of the

  838. wicked.

  839. God,

  840. make me

  841. happy.

  842. Give me

  843. wealth and

  844. prosperity.

  845. Make me

  846. secure in

  847. myself.

  848. love.

  849. This

  850. psalm ends

  851. with the

  852. same thing

  853. that Psalm

  854. 9 began

  855. with.

  856. So Psalm

  857. 10 ends

  858. with the

  859. same thing

  860. that Psalm

  861. 9 began

  862. with.

  863. So verses

  864. 16 through

  865. 18 of

  866. Psalm 10,

  867. the Lord is

  868. king forever

  869. and ever,

  870. the nations

  871. perish from

  872. his land.

  873. The Lord,

  874. this is

  875. Yahweh.

  876. O Lord,

  877. you hear the

  878. desire of the

  879. afflicted,

  880. you will

  881. strengthen their

  882. heart,

  883. you will

  884. incline your

  885. ear to do

  886. justice to

  887. the fatherless

  888. and the

  889. oppressed,

  890. so that man

  891. who is of

  892. the earth

  893. may strike

  894. terror no

  895. more.

  896. The God

  897. of the

  898. Bible is

  899. not far

  900. off.

  901. He is

  902. with the

  903. afflicted

  904. and the

  905. broken.

  906. And maybe

  907. some of

  908. your struggle

  909. might be

  910. that you

  911. aren't able

  912. to admit

  913. that you

  914. are the

  915. afflicted,

  916. that you

  917. are broken.

  918. as I

  919. grow more

  920. and more,

  921. not in

  922. height,

  923. maybe in

  924. weight,

  925. but grow

  926. in age,

  927. I realize

  928. more and

  929. more how

  930. I am

  931. broken

  932. and I

  933. need the

  934. healing work

  935. of Jesus

  936. more and

  937. more.

  938. more.

  939. Your

  940. pleas for

  941. justice

  942. are heard

  943. and

  944. strength

  945. is

  946. provided,

  947. but it

  948. might not

  949. be what

  950. you assume

  951. it should

  952. be,

  953. and the

  954. terror of

  955. evil will

  956. end,

  957. but God's

  958. forever

  959. rule will

  960. never,

  961. ever

  962. end.

  963. I

  964. encourage

  965. you to

  966. move

  967. toward

  968. whatever

  969. brokenness

  970. you know

  971. is in

  972. your life,

  973. whatever

  974. affliction

  975. you feel

  976. like you

  977. have faced,

  978. whatever

  979. evil that

  980. you see

  981. God

  982. bringing

  983. to light

  984. in your

  985. life,

  986. and you

  987. take time

  988. to move

  989. toward that

  990. with

  991. the comfort

  992. of Christ.

  993. Let me

  994. pray.

  995. Most

  996. gracious

  997. God,

  998. we are

  999. thankful

  1000. that you

  1001. are

  1002. your

  1003. father,

  1004. and we

  1005. admit that

  1006. maybe our

  1007. view of

  1008. that word

  1009. is very

  1010. distorted,

  1011. but we

  1012. thank you

  1013. that you

  1014. are a

  1015. God who

  1016. restores,

  1017. and you

  1018. meet the

  1019. afflicted,

  1020. and we

  1021. pray that

  1022. we would

  1023. be people

  1024. who would

  1025. give you

  1026. praise.

  1027. We would

  1028. be thankful

  1029. for who

  1030. you are

  1031. to us,

  1032. that you

  1033. are always

  1034. with us,

  1035. that you

  1036. will never

  1037. ever forsake

  1038. us,

  1039. that we

  1040. will never

  1041. ever be

  1042. alone because

  1043. of your

  1044. great work

  1045. and the

  1046. work of

  1047. Christ.

  1048. Thank you

  1049. that you

  1050. are the

  1051. God of

  1052. comfort

  1053. and peace.

  1054. In the

  1055. name of

  1056. Christ,

  1057. we pray.

  1058. Amen.
