  1. My name is Matthew Capone, and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church,

  2. and it's my joy to bring God's Word to you today.

  3. Special welcome if you are new or you're visiting with us.

  4. We're glad that you're here, and we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats,

  5. but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  6. And as we follow Jesus together, we become convinced that there's no one so good.

  7. They don't need God's grace, and no one so bad that they can't have it,

  8. which is why we come back week after week to hear what God has to say to us in His Word.

  9. We're continuing our series in the Gospel of Mark.

  10. Today we're ending Mark chapter 3, and next week we'll begin Mark chapter 4.

Mark 3 chapter mention Mark 4 chapter mention

  11. You'll remember that the Gospels tell the story of Jesus in His life and His death and His resurrection.

  12. And as we come to Mark, there are two questions particular to this Gospel,

  13. which are first, who is Jesus?

  14. And two, how do we respond to Him?

  15. This morning as we look at the end of chapter 3,

  16. we're going to continue to see what Jesus' call to follow Him actually means.

  17. We're going to see how far that call actually goes.

  18. You'll remember from chapter 1, Jesus walking along, picking His disciples,

  19. He calls them to Himself, and He says, for example, in chapter 1, verse 20,

  20. follow Me.

  21. Well, in 1.20 it says He called them.

  22. And earlier in this chapter, He goes up on a mountain to pick His disciples,

  23. and it tells us that He called them.

  24. And so we're continuing to look at this call to see how radical it is and how deep it is.

  25. We're going to see two things in this passage.

  26. First of all, the priority of the kingdom, and second, the mark of the kingdom.

  27. First, the priority of the kingdom, and second, the mark of the kingdom.

  28. And so with that, we're going to read now.

  29. I invite you to turn with me.

  30. You can turn in your worship guide.

  31. You can turn in your Bible.

  32. You can turn on your phone.

  33. No matter where you turn, remember that this is God's Word.

  34. And God tells us that His Word is more precious than gold, even the finest gold.

  35. And it's sweeter than honey, even the honey that comes straight from the honeycomb,

  36. which is why we read now, starting at verse 31.

  37. And His mother and His brothers came, and standing outside, they sent to Him and called Him.

  38. And a crowd was sitting around Him, and they said to Him,

  39. Your mother and your brothers are outside seeking You.

  40. And He answered them, Who are my mother and my brothers?

  41. And looking about at those who sat around Him, He said,

  42. Here are my mother and my brothers.

  43. For whoever does the will of God, he is my brother and sister and mother.

  44. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's Word.

  45. Our Father in Heaven, we simply thank You that You have given us Your Word

  46. and that You speak to us now.

  47. But we also confess that it is hard for us.

  48. We come as people who are distracted, people are hurting,

  49. people who are burdened, people who are confused.

  50. And so we ask that You would clear those things up for us by Your Spirit this morning,

  51. that You would focus us, that You'd comfort us, that You'd clarify for us.

  52. Most of all, You'd show us Jesus Christ, that we would see Him as beautiful and glorious,

  53. that You would use Your Word to encourage us and to challenge us as we follow Him.

  54. And we thank You that we can have determined His confidence as we ask these things

  55. because we ask them in the mighty name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

  56. So I don't know how many of you have been involved in some sort of family intervention.

  57. You know what I'm talking about.

  58. You finally meet with a member of your family and you confront them,

  59. whether it's confronting them about their addiction or their behavior,

  60. or maybe it's about an unhealthy relationship.

  61. Now, I've never participated in a family intervention,

  62. but as a pastor, I've certainly heard about them.

  63. And in this passage before us this morning,

  64. we get to witness a family intervention from Jesus and His immediate family.

  65. Jesus here has become the crazy family member

  66. who finally needs to be brought back from the brink.

  67. Now, his family maybe has known there's always been something a little bit off about Jesus.

  68. It was sort of cute when He stayed in Jerusalem as a child

  69. and Mary and Joseph couldn't find Him because He was hanging out with the teachers.

  70. The unfortunate fact is that there are some things that are only cute when you're little.

  71. And Jesus has come to an age.

  72. Jesus is not little anymore, and what He's doing is not cute anymore.

  73. Maybe His family should have intervened sooner,

  74. but as they say, better late than never.

  75. It has finally come time for them to do something.

  76. Jesus, you've had a good run,

  77. and it's time for you to finally pack it up and come home.

  78. And so that's what we see here in verse 31.

  79. His mother and his brothers came,

  80. and standing outside, they sent to Him and called Him.

  81. Jesus has gone too far,

  82. and it's time to finally bring it to an end.

  83. We're picking up a story that we began earlier in verses 20 and 21.

  84. You may remember all the way back before Advent in November

  85. when we finished or paused in the Gospel of Mark.

  86. Jesus' family at that point goes out to look for Him.

  87. So if you have your Bible with you,

  88. you can see this in verses 20 and 21.

  89. Especially 21, it says,

  90. And when His family heard it, they went out to seize Him,

  91. for they were saying,

  92. He is out of His mind.

  93. Now, after His family says this,

  94. look, Jesus is crazy.

  95. He's gone too far.

  96. We immediately switch scenes,

  97. and we go to what we talked about last week

  98. when the scribes come and oppose Jesus,

  99. and they credit His power to demons.

  100. Now, this is something we can't overlook

  101. because when we read the Bible,

  102. really when you read any good literature,

  103. if a story is broken up like that,

  104. it means something.

  105. Especially in the Gospels,

  106. if we have an interruption where we start a story,

  107. we go to another story,

  108. and we come back,

  109. the author is doing that with a clear intention.

  110. It's called a bookend,

  111. and it's meant to highlight some sort of connection

  112. between these two stories.

  113. Either there's a contrast to be made,

  114. one character is to be emulated,

  115. other is not,

  116. or there's a similarity

  117. that's being drawn between the two.

  118. And so what is the connection here

  119. between the scribes,

  120. on the one hand,

  121. who are hostile to Jesus,

  122. and His family,

  123. on the other hand,

  124. who are the ones who are closest to Him,

  125. perhaps the ones who love Jesus

  126. more than anything else?

  127. Well, the connection is this.

  128. Both Jesus' family and the scribes

  129. miss what is actually going on.

  130. Both Jesus' family and the scribes

  131. miss what is actually going on.

  132. Both, at some level,

  133. are opposing Jesus and His mission.

  134. Now, one is out of active hostility, right?

  135. The scribes do not like Jesus,

  136. and we're gonna ultimately see

  137. they're part of the plot to kill Him.

  138. So one is hostility.

  139. His family here, of course,

  140. we can assume the best,

  141. perhaps out of misunderstanding or ignorance.

  142. Regardless of the motive,

  143. both misunderstand Jesus' mission,

  144. both oppose it.

  145. And so as we, at Chine Mountain,

  146. look to follow Jesus together,

  147. the point for us is this.

  148. It is not just those on the outside

  149. who thwart following God's mission.

  150. It is not just those on the outside

  151. who misunderstand what God's kingdom is about

  152. and what He is calling us to.

  153. It is sometimes those on the inside as well.

  154. In fact, sometimes it is not just those on the inside.

  155. It is those who are the very closest to us.

  156. It is those with the very best intentions

  157. who misunderstand Jesus' call.

  158. Of course, misunderstanding is better

  159. than all-out hostility.

  160. What His family does here is better

  161. than accusing Jesus of being in league with the devil.

  162. And it is still misunderstanding, missing,

  163. not realizing what it is that Jesus is here for.

  164. And so it's within this conflict

  165. that Jesus clarifies His priorities.

  166. Verse 32.

  167. So 31, His mother and His brothers come.

  168. They're calling Him.

  169. Verse 32, there's a crowd who's sitting around Him.

  170. And they said to Him,

  171. Your mother and your brothers are outside seeking you.

  172. Now the expectation of His family

  173. is that His response is obvious.

  174. Of course, Jesus is going to stop teaching

  175. and He's going to go out and talk to His family

  176. because what could be more important?

  177. We're in a culture, as we read here,

  178. where family is more important than anything else.

  179. It is a core commitment, a core value.

  180. And so Jesus, being a good Jewish boy,

  181. is going to respect His mother and honor His brothers

  182. by leaving, stopping to teach,

  183. and dealing with whatever the emergency is in that moment.

  184. And so that's what makes Jesus' response here so surprising.

  185. Verse 33, He asks them this rhetorical question,

  186. Who are my mother and my brothers?

  187. And then He tells them,

  188. Here are my mother and my brothers.

  189. In other words, you all are actually my family.

  190. For whoever does the will of God,

  191. he is my brother and sister and mother.

  192. Jesus, in a culture that puts family

  193. as one of, if not the top priority here,

  194. is doing something radical,

  195. something shocking, something disruptive.

  196. He is upsetting and violating

  197. what the Jews would have loved and valued at great cost,

  198. perhaps more than anything else.

  199. Now, this is hard for us as Western people to understand

  200. because family is not our number one value.

  201. And so when we hear Jesus saying,

  202. Okay, my family is going to have to wait.

  203. I have a higher priority.

  204. That doesn't strike us as offensive

  205. and as upsetting as it would have the original audience.

  206. That makes a little bit more sense to us.

  207. We don't live in a culture that says family oriented.

  208. And so I want for us to feel how disruptive this is as Americans.

  209. It would probably be something like this.

  210. For us, our core value is not loyalty to family.

  211. One of our greatest core values is freedom and choice.

  212. We love freedom and choice.

  213. That's our loyalty, perhaps above almost anything else.

  214. So I want you to imagine this.

  215. Someone says to you,

  216. The only way that you can get married

  217. is to have an arranged marriage.

  218. Yeah.

  219. The only way you can get married is to have an arranged marriage.

  220. Western people, we'd say what?

  221. Better to not get married than to risk limiting my options.

  222. If that's what we're talking about,

  223. if that's my only option,

  224. I am definitely remaining single forever.

  225. Right?

  226. If giving up family is my only option,

  227. I'm definitely not following Jesus.

  228. That is a step too far.

  229. Okay?

  230. Sacrificing family would have been a nightmare for them

  231. in the way that having limited options,

  232. having our decisions made for us,

  233. is a nightmare for us.

  234. The American nightmare.

  235. And so that's how we come to our first point from this passage,

  236. the priority of the kingdom.

  237. Jesus is making a point here for us

  238. that there is a hierarchy,

  239. a priority of loyalties in this life.

  240. Our ultimate priority,

  241. our ultimate loyalty is with him.

  242. The kingdom of God,

  243. for these people,

  244. comes before family.

  245. We could say the kingdom of God

  246. comes before anyone and anything else.

  247. In fact, to bring this point home for us,

  248. Mark actually draws us a picture in this passage.

  249. The Bible is God's word

  250. in which he instructs us and guides us.

  251. It is also a phenomenal piece of literature.

  252. And so watch what's happening here.

  253. There are literally two circles

  254. in this story.

  255. There's an inner circle

  256. and an outer circle.

  257. Verse 31,

  258. his mother and his brothers came

  259. and standing outside.

  260. Okay?

  261. They're on the outer circle.

  262. Verse 32,

  263. a crowd was sitting around him.

  264. There's an inner circle.

  265. In this story,

  266. Mark is literally illustrating for us

  267. by geography,

  268. Jesus' order of priorities.

  269. Yes, family matters.

  270. It does not matter as much

  271. as his mission for the kingdom of God

  272. as he sits,

  273. teaching and discipling

  274. those who are or will become

  275. his disciples

  276. who are eager to sit at his feet

  277. and learn what he has to say.

  278. They are quite literally

  279. the inner circle.

  280. They are literally

  281. his first priority.

  282. There's another literary device here

  283. going on with some word play.

  284. So we have the visual illustration

  285. of Jesus' priorities.

  286. We also have a demonstration

  287. of the conflict that's going on.

  288. There's an important word

  289. that we've seen

  290. throughout the gospel in Mark,

  291. and it's the word call

  292. or called or calling.

  293. Mark chapter 1, verse 20,

    Mark 1:20

  294. Jesus finds James and John.

  295. It tells us,

  296. and immediately he called them.

  297. Earlier in this chapter,

  298. we saw Jesus pick

  299. the 12 who follow him.

  300. Verse 13,

  301. he went up on the mountain

  302. and called to him

  303. those he desired,

  304. and they came to him.

  305. Did you notice

  306. what Jesus' family does

  307. in this passage?

  308. Verse 31,

  309. standing outside,

  310. they sent to him

  311. and called him.

  312. The point is this.

  313. Jesus calls people

  314. to follow him,

  315. and there are always

  316. other voices calling.

  317. Jesus calls people

  318. to follow him,

  319. and there are always

  320. many other voices

  321. calling us to follow.

  322. There is always

  323. competition

  324. for our attention.

  325. There is always

  326. competition

  327. for our loves

  328. and our loyalty.

  329. And so part of the reason

  330. that we are gathered here

  331. together this morning

  332. as the family of God

  333. at Cheyenne Mountain

  334. Presbyterian Church

  335. is so that we could

  336. be reminded

  337. this morning

  338. as we are

  339. every Sunday

  340. of the ultimate call

  341. of Jesus

  342. that he gives to us

  343. and on our lives.

  344. When we come

  345. and we hear the call

  346. to worship,

  347. that is our reminder

  348. again that Jesus'

  349. calling matters

  350. more than any other.

  351. It is the reminder

  352. that we belong to him

  353. as family

  354. that have been adopted,

  355. and so we come

  356. and worship him,

  357. directing our worship

  358. towards him

  359. and with other people

  360. around us

  361. who are our brothers

  362. and sisters.

  363. There is only

  364. one ultimate call,

  365. and there are

  366. many other voices

  367. looking to pull us

  368. and direct us.

  369. Jesus is the one

  370. who is ultimately calling.

  371. His mother and his brothers

  372. remind us

  373. there are other calls

  374. calls as well.

  375. Calls that are tuned out

  376. when and if

  377. they conflict

  378. with Jesus' call.

  379. It is his call

  380. that is most important.

  381. Jesus, in other words,

  382. upends and directs

  383. the budget of our lives.

  384. It is almost a cliche

  385. to say that

  386. how you budget

  387. your life,

  388. how you budget

  389. your money,

  390. reveals what you

  391. believe is essential

  392. and what you believe

  393. is discretionary.

  394. In fact,

  395. some people would say

  396. if you show me

  397. your budget,

  398. I will show you

  399. what is important to you.

  400. It reveals

  401. what you consider

  402. to be wants

  403. and what you consider

  404. to be needs.

  405. So I want you

  406. to imagine

  407. for a second

  408. someone saying this.

  409. I've spent

  410. so much

  411. on new clothes

  412. this month,

  413. it's actually

  414. not going to work

  415. for me to pay

  416. my mortgage.

  417. That's going to have

  418. to wait until next month.

  419. No.

  420. Everyone knows

  421. you don't budget

  422. like that.

  423. You do not spend

  424. and then see

  425. if you have money

  426. left over

  427. to pay your mortgage.

  428. No,

  429. you pay your mortgage

  430. and you see

  431. what's left over

  432. for other things.

  433. You pay

  434. what's essential.

  435. You pay

  436. for your needs

  437. and then you see

  438. what's left over

  439. for your wants.

  440. Your savings

  441. determine your spending,

  442. not the other way around.

  443. Your essentials

  444. determine how much

  445. is left over

  446. for your discretionary spending,

  447. not the other way around.

  448. You don't pay

  449. for house cleaning

  450. if you can't afford

  451. your mortgage.

  452. You don't pay

  453. for your car

  454. to be repainted

  455. if you can't buy gas.

  456. You don't send money

  457. to other families

  458. if you can't

  459. feed your own.

  460. The same applies

  461. to the budget

  462. of our lives.

  463. Our essential spending,

  464. what is a need

  465. and not a want

  466. is our commitment

  467. to God

  468. and his kingdom

  469. which directs

  470. and determines

  471. everything else.

  472. That is the essential

  473. from which everything else

  474. is downstream.

  475. and so we do this.

  476. We prioritize

  477. being with God's people

  478. in worship

  479. and we see

  480. what time

  481. is left over

  482. for other things.

  483. We don't ask

  484. whether we can afford

  485. to obey God's commands.

  486. We obey God's commands

  487. and we trust him

  488. to provide.

  489. We set aside money

  490. for God

  491. and for the poor

  492. and we see

  493. what is left over

  494. for us.

  495. We see

  496. if someone

  497. shares our faith

  498. commitment first

  499. and then we determine

  500. whether they're

  501. a candidate

  502. for dating

  503. or for marriage.

  504. We honor

  505. our commitments

  506. as parents

  507. and spouses

  508. first

  509. and then we see

  510. what's left over

  511. for extracurriculars.

  512. And in this passage

  513. particularly

  514. we know

  515. God's will

  516. first

  517. and then we evaluate

  518. the expectations

  519. of our families.

  520. We have clarity

  521. about our priorities

  522. and our hierarchies

  523. about what's essential

  524. and what's discretionary

  525. in other parts

  526. of life.

  527. But somehow

  528. when it comes

  529. to our spiritual life

  530. things quickly

  531. get muddled.

  532. Jesus here

  533. cuts through

  534. all of that

  535. and provides us

  536. with tremendous

  537. clarity.

  538. We are tempted

  539. to think

  540. that Christianity

  541. is a hobby

  542. that we pick up

  543. and put down

  544. when we want.

  545. Jesus says

  546. follow me.

  547. Jesus says

  548. everything else

  549. can be

  550. a hobby

  551. but not me.

  552. I am not

  553. the priority

  554. that's juggled

  555. along with many others.

  556. I am the

  557. priority

  558. that determines

  559. what else can fit

  560. and where

  561. it fits.

  562. I am

  563. the inner

  564. circle.

  565. In other words

  566. our commitment

  567. to Christ

  568. is not an

  569. accessory commitment

  570. it is what we'd

  571. call a

  572. keystone

  573. commitment.

  574. It's not an

  575. accessory commitment

  576. it's what we'd

  577. call a

  578. keystone

  579. commitment.

  580. Everything else

  581. is downstream

  582. of that.

  583. Family commitment

  584. downstream

  585. of faith

  586. commitment.

  587. We don't

  588. abandon

  589. it

  590. for our

  591. faith

  592. we filter

  593. it through

  594. our faith.

  595. We don't

  596. abandon

  597. other commitments

  598. for our

  599. faith

  600. we filter

  601. them

  602. through

  603. our

  604. faith.

  605. This is not

  606. an issue

  607. of legalism

  608. or moralism

  609. it's an issue

  610. of priorities.

  611. It's not

  612. an issue

  613. of obeying

  614. rules or not

  615. an issue

  616. of what our

  617. heart loves

  618. more than

  619. anything else.

  620. In other

  621. words

  622. everyone

  623. has an

  624. ultimate

  625. priority.

  626. Everyone

  627. has something

  628. they love

  629. and value

  630. more than

  631. anything else.

  632. the question

  633. is which

  634. story do

  635. we live

  636. in?

  637. Which

  638. horizon

  639. do we

  640. set our

  641. eyes on?

  642. Everyone

  643. has a

  644. keystone

  645. everyone

  646. has a

  647. horizon

  648. line

  649. everyone

  650. has an

  651. ultimate

  652. loyalty.

  653. For many

  654. people today

  655. their ultimate

  656. loyalty is

  657. freedom from

  658. all commitments.

  659. I want to

  660. make sure I'm

  661. free whatever

  662. shows up.

  663. For other

  664. people their

  665. ultimate

  666. loyalty is

  667. safety.

  668. They never

  669. buy anything

  670. because the

  671. larger your

  672. bank account

  673. the safer

  674. you feel.

  675. Still others

  676. and this is

  677. common in our

  678. culture their

  679. ultimate horizon

  680. is pleasure

  681. and peak

  682. experiences.

  683. Jesus here

  684. tells us what

  685. our horizon

  686. line should

  687. be and

  688. is.

  689. We fix

  690. our eyes

  691. first and

  692. foremost more

  693. than on

  694. anything else

  695. towards him

  696. and his

  697. kingdom.

  698. That is the

  699. place our

  700. eyes set.

  701. That is what

  702. directs everything

  703. else in our

  704. lives.

  705. That is what

  706. sets every

  707. other priority.

  708. That is the

  709. filter we

  710. place everything

  711. through.

  712. through.

  713. Now it is

  714. important as we

  715. talk about

  716. these issues

  717. of hierarchies

  718. especially as

  719. Jesus is

  720. talking about

  721. his family

  722. to have

  723. clarity about

  724. what this

  725. passage

  726. doesn't

  727. mean.

  728. Because it

  729. would be

  730. easy at

  731. this point

  732. to take

  733. Jesus'

  734. words and

  735. to abuse

  736. it.

  737. It does

  738. not mean

  739. that we

  740. abandon

  741. our families.

  742. It means

  743. that we put

  744. them in the

  745. appropriate place.

  746. we put them

  747. in the

  748. proper place.

  749. It is not

  750. right for us

  751. to abuse

  752. this passage

  753. to neglect

  754. our families.

  755. In fact,

  756. if you're

  757. supposed to

  758. follow the

  759. will of

  760. God,

  761. if that's

  762. what determines

  763. his family,

  764. remember that

  765. the will of

  766. God includes

  767. caring for

  768. your family.

  769. The fifth

  770. commandment,

  771. honor your

  772. father and

  773. your mother.

  774. Deuteronomy

    Deuteronomy 6 chapter mention

  775. chapter 6,

  776. be diligent in

  777. instructing your

  778. children in the

  779. way of the

  780. Lord.

  781. Ephesians and

  782. Colossians teach

  783. us about being

  784. faithful spouses

  785. and parents.

  786. And so we

  787. have found

  788. ourselves in a

  789. bad place if

  790. we confuse

  791. this passage

  792. and find

  793. ourselves so

  794. busy with

  795. Christian activity

  796. that we can't

  797. be present with

  798. our families.

  799. Something is

  800. wrong at that

  801. point.

  802. You don't get

  803. to use, as

  804. many do,

  805. service to

  806. God as an

  807. excuse for

  808. being a poor

  809. and absent

  810. wife, husband,

  811. mother, father,

  812. son, daughter.

  813. But in

  814. places where

  815. there's a

  816. conflict between

  817. the demands

  818. and priorities

  819. and expectations

  820. of family or

  821. anything else

  822. and the will

  823. of God, you

  824. choose and

  825. always choose

  826. the will of

  827. God.

  828. And part of

  829. God's will

  830. involves caring

  831. for your family.

  832. Now if this

  833. is confusing

  834. for you,

  835. thankfully,

  836. Jesus models

  837. this for us

  838. perfectly.

  839. Jesus cares

  840. for his

  841. family and

  842. puts them in

  843. the right

  844. place.

  845. On the one

  846. hand, in

  847. this passage,

  848. we see that

  849. his family is

  850. not able to

  851. pull him away

  852. from his

  853. mission, his

  854. direction, and

  855. his purpose.

  856. Right?

  857. If he had, he

  858. would have left,

  859. stopped teaching,

  860. scaled down his

  861. ministry, returned

  862. back to Nazareth.

  863. Jesus doesn't

  864. do that.

  865. On the other

  866. hand, Jesus

  867. cares faithfully

  868. for his

  869. family.

  870. You'll remember

  871. John chapter

    John 19 chapter mention

  872. 19, Jesus

  873. is dying on

  874. the cross in

  875. agony.

  876. And what does

  877. he make sure

  878. happens?

  879. He makes sure

  880. his mother is

  881. cared for.

  882. Okay?

  883. Jesus shows

  884. us how to

  885. balance it.

  886. On the one

  887. hand, he keeps

  888. his mission

  889. first.

  890. On the other

  891. hand, he is

  892. faithful to

  893. his family.

  894. He doesn't

  895. cut them off.

  896. He's not

  897. estranged from

  898. them.

  899. Jesus cares

  900. about them.

  901. They are just

  902. not his

  903. fundamental

  904. orientation.

  905. Instead, Jesus

  906. is oriented

  907. around a

  908. mission and a

  909. direction and

  910. a purpose.

  911. In fact, many

  912. have pointed

  913. out that putting

  914. God first is

  915. what actually

  916. allows us to

  917. love our

  918. families rather

  919. than neglecting

  920. them on the

  921. one hand or

  922. idolizing them

  923. on the other.

  924. And when we

  925. idolize them, we

  926. put pressure on

  927. those around us

  928. that they are

  929. impossible to

  930. bear up under.

  931. And so it's in

  932. putting God

  933. first that we're

  934. able to be

  935. faithful to our

  936. families.

  937. That then is

  938. the priority of

  939. the kingdom, that

  940. it comes first, it

  941. comes before

  942. anything else.

  943. We also see in

  944. this passage not

  945. just the priority of

  946. the kingdom, but

  947. the mark of the

  948. kingdom.

  949. I've told you that

  950. when you read the

  951. Bible, bookends are

  952. extremely important

  953. when a story is

  954. broken up as it is

  955. here.

  956. Another element to

  957. watch out for as you

  958. read scripture is

  959. final statements.

  960. Closing statements in

  961. stories often, especially

  962. when they're stated by

  963. Jesus, give us the

  964. main point.

  965. They give us the

  966. conclusion.

  967. They explain what's

  968. going on.

  969. And here we have

  970. such a final statement

  971. in verse 35.

  972. For whoever does the

  973. will of God, he is my

  974. brother and sister and

  975. mother.

  976. This gives us two

  977. things, both an

  978. encouragement and a

  979. challenge.

  980. First, the

  981. encouragement is the

  982. inclusion that Jesus

  983. has here.

  984. Jesus includes anyone

  985. and everyone who

  986. follows after him in

  987. his family.

  988. God makes these

  989. people his family.

  990. That's why we

  991. confessed this morning

  992. about the doctrine

  993. of adoption.

  994. And so people might

  995. come and say, hey, you

  996. should visit our

  997. church.

  998. It is like a

  999. family.

  1000. There's a sense in

  1001. which that's true.

  1002. There's also a sense in

  1003. which it's not true.

  1004. It's not like a

  1005. family.

  1006. It is a family.

1007. God has set this as

  1008. the greatest priority

  1009. for us socially and

  1010. relationally.

  1011. You, if you follow

1012. after him, are part of

1013. his family, not just in

  1014. your relationship to

  1015. him, but in your

  1016. relationship with

  1017. others.

  1018. And so that's why I

  1019. say every Sunday that

  1020. we are following Jesus

  1021. together as one

  1022. community.

  1023. If you've seen or

  1024. read any story or

  1025. movie about someone

  1026. who's adopted or in

  1027. an orphanage, you

  1028. know there are some

  1029. orphans who are more

  1030. attractive to be

  1031. adopted than others.

  1032. You know that there's

  1033. discussion about, oh,

1034. I'm too old enough to

1035. be, I'm too old to be

  1036. adopted.

  1037. I'm not young enough.

  1038. I'm not cute enough.

  1039. I'm not sweet enough.

  1040. Only certain types of

  1041. people get chosen.

1042. The good news of this

  1043. passage as Jesus tells

1044. us that those who obey

1045. his will are part of

  1046. his family is that

1047. there is no such thing

1048. as too old or too

1049. young or too cute or

  1050. too hard.

  1051. Jesus will adopt anyone

  1052. and everyone who

  1053. follows after him in

  1054. his will.

  1055. His invitation to

  1056. follow him is for

  1057. anyone who receives

  1058. it.

  1059. Jesus will adopt you.

1060. That's the good news of

1061. the mark of the kingdom.

  1062. There's also some bad

  1063. news.

1064. The bad news is you do

  1065. not belong to Jesus

  1066. because of familiar or

  1067. social ties.

  1068. Church membership and

  1069. attendance does not

  1070. guarantee that you are

  1071. with Jesus.

1072. The people who are with

  1073. him have a mark and a

  1074. sign and it's this.

1075. They do the will of

  1076. God.

1077. Yes, Jesus takes us as

1078. we are and he never

  1079. leaves us there.

  1080. Yes, Jesus saves us

  1081. apart from anything we

  1082. have ever done and

  1083. those he saves, he

  1084. sanctifies.

  1085. Our holiness as we

1086. follow after the will of

1087. God is the sign that he

1088. has chosen us as his

  1089. sons and his daughters.

  1090. And so there's a

  1091. radical offense here

  1092. and a radical love.

1093. And the radical love is

  1094. this, adoption is

  1095. always available.

  1096. Adoption is always

  1097. an option.

  1098. Jesus is always willing

  1099. to adopt.

  1100. He doesn't rule people

1101. out based on age or

  1102. desirability.

  1103. Instead, his call to

1104. follow him is a call

  1105. that's extended even

1106. now to you right here

  1107. in this place.

  1108. Jesus is still calling

  1109. people to follow after

1110. him and those who do,

1111. do it because they are

  1112. his family, because he's

  1113. adopted them and received

  1114. them.

  1115. Amen.

  1116. Now we've looked this

  1117. morning at some heavy

  1118. things.

1119. The heavy call to make

  1120. Jesus the ultimate, the

  1121. greatest priority in our

  1122. lives.

  1123. And the sobering reminder

1124. that the mark of that

  1125. family is one of

  1126. obedience.

1127. And it would be easy in

1128. the face of those things

  1129. to feel a weight that's

  1130. impossible for us to

  1131. carry by ourselves.

  1132. A call that's impossible

1133. for us to answer alone.

  1134. Thankfully, the good news

1135. of the gospel is that God

  1136. always enables and

  1137. empowers what he

  1138. commands.

  1139. It is impossible, in

1140. other words, for us to

1141. fix our eyes on the right

  1142. horizon line by

  1143. ourselves.

  1144. And thankfully, God has

1145. not left us to do that.

  1146. We see a similar

  1147. sentiment to this passage

  1148. in John chapter 14.

    John 14 chapter mention

1149. If you have your Bible

1150. with you, I invite you to

  1151. turn there with me.

1152. And John says this of

  1153. Jesus' words in verse

1154. 15, if you love me, you

  1155. will keep my commandments.

  1156. Thankfully, that's not

  1157. all John says.

  1158. God's grace always comes

  1159. before obedience or

  1160. commands.

1161. And if you're familiar with

1162. John chapter 14, you know

    John 14 chapter mention

1163. before Jesus ever says that,

  1164. he says this,

1165. let not your hearts be

  1166. troubled.

  1167. Believe in God.

  1168. Believe also in me.

1169. In my Father's house are

  1170. many rooms.

1171. If it were not so, would I

1172. have told you that I go to

1173. prepare a place for you?

1174. And if I go and prepare a

1175. place for you, I will come

1176. again and I will take you to

1177. myself that where I am, you

  1178. may be also.

1179. Horizon lines are what we

  1180. believe about the future.

1181. Jesus here, before he tells

1182. his people that if they love

1183. him, they will keep his

  1184. commandments, gives them a

1185. picture and a vision of the

1186. future that he has for them.

  1187. It's one of a family.

1188. What does a family have?

  1189. It has a home.

1190. Jesus reminds his people that

1191. he is preparing a place for

  1192. them.

1193. It is not up to us, brothers

  1194. and sisters, to pull

  1195. ourselves up by our

1196. bootstraps to try to figure

1197. out how we can make Jesus

1198. our number one priority and

  1199. follow after his will.

1200. No, Jesus comes first with

  1201. his grace, reminding his

1202. people that he is a father

1203. who prepares a home for

  1204. them.

1205. He presents that vision and

1206. that picture to us that we

1207. would fix our eyes on it and

1208. see it as our future that is

  1209. more beautiful and more

  1210. glorious than anything else.

1211. He shows us his promises and

1212. his provision before he ever

  1213. gives a command.

1214. Even more than that, Jesus

1215. doesn't just tell his people

1216. here that he has a home for

  1217. them.

1218. He reminds them of perhaps

1219. what is more important than

1220. that, that a family is a place

1221. where there is presence and

1222. access and fellowship and love.

1223. And so immediately after he

1224. tells them that love equals

1225. obedience, he reminds them in

  1226. verses 16 and 17, and I will

1227. ask the father and he will give

1228. you another helper to be with

  1229. you forever.

1230. Even the spirit of truth whom

1231. the world cannot receive because

1232. it neither sees him, you nor

  1233. knows him.

1234. You know him for he dwells with

1235. you and will be with you.

  1236. Jesus, hard reminder and

1237. command in this passage that he

  1238. comes before anything and

1239. everything else that he's calling

1240. his people to obedience and that

1241. is their mark and sign, rests and

1242. only rest on God's grace and

1243. provision as he reminds us of what

1244. he has prepared for us in the

1245. future and the way he by his

1246. spirit meets us now, today, in

  1247. the present.

1248. And so it's as we embrace and

1249. receive that grace, as we look to

1250. what God has prepared, is

1251. preparing and has given to us that

1252. we are able to follow after him.

1253. Brothers and sisters, Jesus calls

  1254. you to follow him.

1255. He offers to make you his

  1256. family.

1257. He offers you more than anyone or

1258. anything else can give you.

  1259. Will you?

1260. For whoever does the will of God, he

1261. is my brother and sister and mother.

  1262. Let's pray.

1263. Our Father in heaven, we thank you

1264. for this family that you've given

  1265. us.

1266. We thank you that you always enable

1267. and empower what you command and

1268. that you meet us first with your

  1269. grace.

1270. We thank you most of all that you do

1271. that in your son and our savior,

  1272. Jesus Christ.

1273. And so we ask that you would set our

1274. eyes on the right horizon.

1275. That we would love you and follow you

  1276. more than anything else.

1277. We ask these things in the mighty name

  1278. of Jesus Christ.

  1279. Amen.
