  1. Good morning. My name is Matthew Capone, and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church, and it's my joy to bring God's Word to you today.

  2. A special welcome if you're new or visiting with us. We're glad that you're here, and we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats, but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  3. And as we follow Jesus together, we become convinced that there's no one so good, they don't need God's grace, and no one so bad that they can't have it, which is why we come back week after week to hear what God has to say to us in His Word.

  4. We're continuing our series in the Gospel of Mark. You'll remember that the Gospels tell the story of Jesus and His life and His death and His resurrection,

  5. and we're continuing in chapter 4, where Jesus has been teaching us about the kingdom of God.

  6. He's been using this agricultural image, the image of the seed that is sown. Last week, we saw the power of the seed, the resilience of the seed.

  7. This week, we're going to look at the seed from a different angle. We're going to see its initial smallness.

  8. And so we'll look at the growth of the seed, the ultimate size of the seed.

  9. Last week, we were encouraged by the reminder that the kingdom is working, even when we don't see it.

  10. This week, we're encouraged that the kingdom is powerful, even when it doesn't meet up to worldly standards,

  11. even when it would appear to be small and insignificant.

  12. And in fact, my guess is if you're a Christian, you feel that at times.

  13. If Jesus is the king, why isn't the church more effective, better funded, more powerful?

  14. If the kingdom is so powerful, why are we still here 2,000 years later?

  15. Why don't we see more of a victory over evil?

  16. Why is there such a big difference, a big gap between what we've been promised is to come

  17. and what we see right now in this world?

  18. There may be times where we're discouraged or confused by the smallness of God's kingdom.

  19. It's with that challenge that we come to God's word.

  20. And so I invite you to turn with me.

  21. You can turn in your Bible.

  22. You can turn in your worship guide to the sermon passage.

  23. You can turn on your phone.

  24. No matter where you turn, remember that this is God's word.

  25. And God tells us that his word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path,

  26. which means that God has not left us to stumble alone in the dark,

  27. but instead he's given us his word to show us the way to go.

  28. And so that's why we read now Mark chapter 4, starting at verse 13.

    Mark 4 chapter mention

  29. And he said,

  30. With many such parables, he spoke the word to them as they were able to hear.

  31. He did not speak to them without a parable, but privately to his own disciples,

  32. he explained everything.

  33. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  34. Father in heaven, we thank you that your word is powerful and effective.

  35. It's your word that brings something out of nothing.

  36. And it's your word that brings dead things to life.

  37. And we confess this morning that without the help of your spirit,

  38. the power of your word, we are dead on arrival.

  39. So we simply ask for those things this morning,

  40. that you would give us your spirit to use your word in a powerful way,

  41. that we would be challenged by it, encouraged by it,

  42. and that we would see Jesus.

  43. We ask that you do these simple things

  44. as we look at what you have to say to us here in the gospel of Mark.

  45. We ask these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

  46. Amen.

  47. It's common knowledge, I think, or at least I hope,

  48. that we now know that redwood trees are the tallest of all trees in the world,

  49. and you'll find many of them on the coast of California.

  50. You may also know that National Geographic ran a documentary series

  51. for about 25 years called National Geographic Explorer.

  52. And in 2009, they ran one episode called Climbing Redwood Giants,

  53. which tracks a variety of people who interact with these redwoods in California.

  54. One of them is a man named Michael Nichols,

  55. who was a photographer for National Geographic,

  56. and he was frustrated by the fact that none of the photos of these redwood trees did them justice.

  57. People would come to the redwood forest,

  58. and they would be overwhelmed with this sense of awe and transcendence.

  59. But when they looked at a picture, they would just think,

  60. ah, that's a nice tall tree.

  61. And so he wanted to fill that gap between the in-person experience

  62. and the viewing of a picture.

  63. The problem is that these trees are typically over 300 feet tall.

  64. And he wanted to take a picture that showed the tree all the way from the top down to the bottom.

  65. Turns out this is more challenging than you might expect.

  66. He spent 21 days camped out in the forest trying to get one picture.

  67. They would set up every morning with his crew before dawn,

  68. and he'd have someone at the top of the tree

  69. who would give them the go signal as soon as he saw the sun.

  70. They had a camera that they had to back up 50 feet away from the tree

  71. because the crown of the tree at the very top was 100 feet wide.

  72. And this robotic camera essentially had many different lenses on it,

  73. and it would drop from the top all the way to the bottom.

  74. And so they would try day after day after day

  75. trying to get the right picture with the right sunlight at the right time.

  76. He said this,

  77. his goal is to capture the grandeur of a giant redwood tree in one image.

  78. Day 14, they finally got the picture they wanted,

  79. except it wasn't just one picture.

  80. They took 84 different pictures and pieced them all together.

  81. These 84 pictures that were pieced together into one image

  82. formed a five-page foldout

  83. in the National Geographic issue that came out in October of 2009.

  84. At the beginning of this documentary,

  85. the narrator tells us,

  86. even giants start small

  87. with modest cones packed with seeds no bigger than tomatoes.

  88. And so this giant redwood tree,

  89. the tallest of all trees in the world,

  90. over 300 feet tall,

  91. some of the tallest ones much larger than that,

  92. starts with a seed no larger than a tomato.

  93. He is comparing for us the beginning and the end.

  94. And that's the same thing Jesus does for us in this passage.

  95. He wants us to feel the difference,

  96. the contrast between the beginning and the end of the kingdom of God.

  97. We see here, verse 30,

  98. there's something difficult about understanding the kingdom.

  99. It doesn't meet our expectations.

  100. It's counterintuitive,

  101. which is why he asks this question,

  102. with what can we compare the kingdom of God

  103. or what parable shall we use for it?

  104. In other words,

  105. it's hard to find the right example

  106. because this is such a strange, unusual thing.

  107. The kingdom operates in such a way

  108. that's different from our expectations and our experience.

  109. So what in the world are we going to have

  110. that would actually help us

  111. begin to wrap our minds around it?

  112. And he tells us,

  113. well, it has to be something,

  114. verse 31,

  115. that starts out as the smallest.

  116. Verse 32 ends up as the largest.

  117. Whatever our parable is,

  118. it has to be something that starts out as the smallest,

  119. ends up as the largest.

  120. Before we dive deep into that, by the way,

  121. our points this morning are very simple.

  122. One, the smallest.

  123. Two, the largest.

  124. I want to make sure we review and understand

  125. what it is that we're talking about

  126. when we use the phrase,

  127. the kingdom of God.

  128. I talked last week about this temptation

  129. to use what's called God talk,

  130. which is when we throw all these phrases around

  131. that sound spiritual

  132. and we have no idea what we're talking about.

  133. Kingdom of God can fall into this category.

  134. People throw it around and use it.

  135. If you ask them to define it,

  136. would they actually be able to tell you

  137. what in the world they're talking about?

  138. There's all sorts of books and articles

  139. written trying to define this,

  140. and I'm going to give you this very simple definition

  141. that I gave you last week.

  142. When we talk about the kingdom of God,

  143. we are simply talking about the place

  144. where Jesus is king.

  145. When we are talking about the kingdom of God,

  146. we're talking about the place where Jesus is king.

  147. This is the place where Jesus is loved

  148. and worshiped and obeyed.

  149. We see the kingdom only in part right now

  150. because not everyone loves, obeys,

  151. or worships the king.

  152. We will one day see the kingdom in full

  153. because one day everyone will worship

  154. and recognize Jesus as king.

  155. In fact, this is what Paul tells us

  156. in Philippians chapter two.

  157. He says,

  158. at the name of Jesus,

  159. every knee should bow in heaven and on earth

  160. and under the earth,

  161. and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord

  162. to the glory of God the Father.

  163. We will see the kingdom in full

  164. when every tongue confesses Jesus as Lord.

  165. We don't see that yet.

  166. And so now what we see,

  167. and this is the quote I gave you last week

  168. from Martin Lloyd-Jones,

  169. is the kingdom shows up in the hearts

  170. and lives of his people.

  171. Jesus' kingdom shows up in the hearts

  172. and lives of his people.

  173. In fact, if you look on page five of your worship guide,

  174. you'll see I gave you that same quote all over again.

  175. It's the best quote that I've ever found

  176. on the kingdom of God.

  177. And he uses that phrase,

  178. the very last sentence,

  179. he is certainly ruling in that way,

  180. in the hearts and lives of all his people.

  181. And so we prayed this morning in the Lord's prayer

  182. that God's kingdom would come on earth

  183. as it is in heaven.

  184. And what we are praying when we pray that

  185. is that you and other people would worship and love

  186. and obey Jesus as king more and more.

  187. We don't have to give in to God talk.

  188. We can clarify our terms.

  189. That is what we mean when we talk about the kingdom of God,

  190. the place where Jesus is king.

  191. And so jumping right back in,

  192. remember our two points are very simple,

  193. the smallest and the biggest.

  194. First of all, this kingdom,

  195. this place where Jesus is king is the smallest.

  196. Verse 31,

  197. it is like a grain of mustard seed,

  198. which when sown on the ground

  199. is the smallest of all the seeds on earth.

  200. The kingdom of God is small in many different ways.

  201. I'll give you guys some ideas,

  202. but it's small from a worldly perspective.

  203. The things that this world expects

  204. and demands of a kingdom,

  205. the kingdom of God does not meet up to those expectations.

  206. It does not rise to the height

  207. that one would think it would.

  208. And it doesn't do this in a variety of ways.

  209. First of all, the logic of the cross is the smallest.

  210. The cross is weak and foolish from a worldly perspective.

  211. In fact, Paul, the apostle,

  212. says this explicitly in 1 Corinthians 1.

  213. He says,

  214. the cross is foolishness to the world.

  215. And here is the sense in which it's foolish.

  216. It is foolish, as is often said,

  217. because it is an instrument of torture

  218. that's used as an instrument of salvation.

  219. It is foolish because it's an instrument of torture

  220. used as an instrument of salvation.

  221. It is scandalous.

  222. The cross does not make sense to the world.

  223. It does not make sense that strength would come through weakness.

  224. The image of the cross that we have now

  225. has been domesticated over time.

  226. Initially, it was extremely shocking.

  227. In fact, there's this book called Dominion,

  228. How the Christian Revolution Remade the World

  229. by a man named Tom Holland,

  230. and he notes that artists were not willing

  231. to use the cross as an image until AD 400.

  232. It took 400 years for people

  233. to even be willing to use the image.

  234. That's how scandalous it was.

  235. In fact, he says this,

  236. divinity was for the very greatest of the great,

  237. for victors and heroes and kings.

  238. Its measure was the power to torture one's enemies,

  239. not to suffer it oneself.

  240. That a man who had himself been crucified

  241. might be hailed as a god

  242. could not help but be seen by people

  243. everywhere across the Roman world

  244. as scandalous, obscene, and grotesque.

  245. That such a god of all gods might have had a son

  246. and that this son, suffering the fate of a slave,

  247. might have been tortured to death on a cross

  248. were claims as stupefying as they were

  249. to most Jews' repellent.

  250. No more shocking a reversal

  251. of their most avoutly held assumptions

  252. could possibly have been imagined.

  253. Not merely blasphemy,

  254. it was madness.

  255. The cross is the smallest.

  256. It is small and weak from a worldly perspective.

  257. It makes no sense whatsoever

  258. to use an instrument of torture

  259. as an instrument of salvation.

  260. It's not just the logic of the cross, though,

  261. that it's the smallest.

  262. It's also the people of the cross

  263. who are the smallest.

  264. And by the people of the cross,

  265. I mean you and me.

  266. Paul does not pay us any compliments

  267. in 1 Corinthians 1

  268. because he doesn't just say

  269. that the cross is foolish.

  270. He says, you are foolish.

  271. He says this, verse 26,

  272. for consider your calling, brothers.

  273. Not many of you were wise

  274. according to worldly standards.

  275. Not many were powerful.

  276. Not many were of noble birth.

  277. But God chose what is foolish in the world

  278. to shame the wise.

  279. God chose what is weak in the world

  280. to shame the strong.

  281. God chose what is low and despised in the world,

  282. even things that are not,

  283. to bring to nothing things that are.

  284. So when Jesus came to set up his kingdom,

  285. he decided to pick a brain trust

  286. of the smartest possible people he could find

  287. with the greatest gifts that he had seen in advance.

  288. And he picked them for that reason,

  289. leaving out people who didn't meet up to his standards.

  290. No.

  291. The complete opposite.

  292. Jesus comes in his kingdom

  293. and he picks those who are not wise,

  294. those who are not powerful,

  295. those who are not noble birth,

  296. those who are foolish,

  297. those who are weak,

  298. those who are not strong,

  299. those who are low and despised.

  300. The kingdom is the smallest.

  301. The foolishness,

  302. the smallness of the kingdom is this then.

  303. There are many from Harvard that will reject it

  304. and high school dropouts who will embrace it.

  305. There are many who are rich who will reject it

  306. and those who are poor who will embrace it.

  307. There are those who are virtuous

  308. who will reject it.

  309. Those who are obnoxious

  310. who will enter the kingdom of God.

  311. Now having educated

  312. of the kingdom doesn't shock us

  313. as much as it does the Roman world.

  314. Our values are different.

  315. What's shocking for us

  316. is that obnoxious people would get into the kingdom

  317. and virtuous people would not.

  318. Jesus chooses the smallest.

  319. It's foolish and small

  320. and weak in the sense

  321. that Jesus presents to his followers

  322. a way of suffering

  323. rather than luxury.

  324. The gospel does not fit into the expectations

  325. and standards of this world.

  326. It's not just the logic of the cross.

  327. It's not just the people of the cross

  328. who are small and foolish though.

  329. It's also the king of the cross.

  330. Jesus did not come as a beautiful person.

  331. He came as small compared to the kings of this world.

  332. Jesus shows up in a stable

  333. rather than a palace.

  334. Jesus rides into Jerusalem on a donkey

  335. rather than a war horse.

  336. Jesus has a crown of thorns

  337. rather than a crown of gold.

  338. Isaiah tells us, in fact,

  339. that there was nothing attractive about Jesus

  340. that would draw people to him.

  341. Isaiah 53 too.

  342. He had no form or majesty

  343. that we should look at him

  344. and no beauty that we should desire him.

  345. If Christianity was a blind taste test,

  346. remember you see these from time to time, right?

  347. People will have Pepsi and Coke

  348. but they won't tell you which is which

  349. and you're supposed to taste it

  350. and recognize what's correct and good.

  351. Maybe you have a new product

  352. compared to a name brand product

  353. and without knowing what it is you're tasting,

  354. you're able to pick up on certain things.

  355. If there was a blind taste test of Christianity,

  356. the normal flavor outside of God's spirit

  357. would be this.

  358. Obscure, weak, insignificant,

  359. powerless, foolish, shameful.

  360. That's what the cross tastes like to this world.

  361. That's what Paul is telling us

  362. in 1 Corinthians 1.

  363. Others, on the other hand,

  364. taste it and say this,

  365. it tastes like the power of God.

  366. God uses the small and foolish things

  367. of this world.

  368. Jesus teaches this parable

  369. because it is something that's relevant

  370. and real for these people

  371. and for us as well.

  372. It's hitting at something perhaps you feel.

  373. Perhaps you feel at times

  374. that the kingdom is in fact small

  375. and little and insignificant.

  376. It is corporations and governments

  377. that have money and power.

  378. If God is the king,

  379. if his kingdom is the greatest,

  380. why is it that Apple and Facebook and Amazon

  381. have such great levels of influence and power?

  382. If God's kingdom is the greatest

  383. and he's the king,

  384. why is it that Elon Musk

  385. and Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates

  386. are the ones with all the money?

  387. Why isn't it the church?

  388. Because the kingdom is small

  389. and weak and foolish.

  390. We saw the parable of the soils

  391. a while back.

  392. Chapter 4, verses 1 through 20.

  393. Why is it that the world is so alluring?

  394. Why is it that these thorns

  395. are able to come in

  396. and crush the seed of the kingdom?

  397. Well, it's because the kingdom

  398. is weak and insignificant

  399. by the numbers.

  400. It is not what is most alluring

  401. and beautiful.

  402. Jesus needs to teach this

  403. to his disciples and to us

  404. because the kingdom

  405. is not what they expected.

  406. Jesus' followers wanted

  407. a rapid onset kingdom.

  408. They wanted an immediate kingdom.

  409. They wanted a powerful earthly kingdom.

  410. And Jesus here instead

  411. resets their expectations.

  412. It is not going to be what you want.

  413. It is going to be

  414. the smallest kingdom.

  415. The question, though,

  416. that's still unanswered is,

  417. why?

  418. Why is it that the kingdom

  419. comes in such smallness?

  420. Why didn't Jesus come

  421. with a royal train?

  422. Why didn't he come

  423. with a real crown?

  424. Why didn't he ride in Jerusalem

  425. on a war horse?

  426. Well, Paul answers

  427. that question for us as well

  428. near the end of 1 Corinthians 1.

  429. He says,

  430. God chose what is low

  431. and despised in the world,

  432. even things that are not,

  433. to bring to nothing

  434. things that are,

  435. verse 29,

  436. here's the answer,

  437. so that no human being

  438. might boast in the presence of God.

  439. God chose a small

  440. and foolish kingdom

  441. to highlight his grace

  442. so that no one

  443. could congratulate themselves

  444. for being a part of it,

  445. so that no one

  446. could pat themselves

  447. on the back

  448. that they were smart enough,

  449. powerful, and rich enough

  450. to be part of the kingdom of God.

  451. The kingdom starts

  452. and looks small

  453. to show God's glory.

  454. It's meant to highlight

  455. God's grace.

  456. It's meant to show God's glory.

  457. In fact,

  458. we know this intuitively, right?

  459. There is something

  460. beautiful and marvelous

  461. about small things

  462. turning into great things.

  463. The smallness of the seed

  464. is part of what makes

  465. the redwood

  466. so majestic and impressive.

  467. You think to yourself,

  468. that large tree

  469. came from that small seed?

  470. It would make sense, right,

  471. if it came from a big seed.

  472. And yet,

  473. that's not how it works, right?

  474. That's why the narrator

  475. of the documentary

  476. mentions it.

  477. He says,

  478. even giants start small

  479. with modest cones

  480. packed with seeds

  481. no bigger than tomatoes.

  482. The redwood tree,

  483. in other words,

  484. is not large

  485. because it started large.

  486. It's large

  487. because of the power

  488. of the seed.

  489. The kingdom of God

  490. is not large

  491. because it started large.

  492. It is large

  493. because of the power

  494. of the gospel.

  495. The smallness of the kingdom

  496. shows us

  497. the power

  498. of God.

  499. The gospel

  500. is beautiful

  501. and powerful,

  502. just not

  503. the way we expect it.

  504. And so that's why

  505. Paul also tells us

  506. in 1 Corinthians 1,

  507. the word of the cross

  508. is folly

  509. to those who are perishing,

  510. but to us

  511. who are being saved,

  512. it is the power

  513. of God.

  514. It's smallness,

  515. the fact that it's

  516. insignificant and weak

  517. is a feature,

  518. not a bug.

  519. Thankfully,

  520. it's not just

  521. the smallness

  522. of the kingdom

  523. that we see here,

  524. though.

  525. That was verse 31.

  526. We also have

  527. verse 32,

  528. the greatest kingdom.

  529. Yet when it is sown,

  530. it grows up

  531. and becomes larger

  532. than all

  533. the garden plants.

  534. Yes,

  535. it's a small

  536. and foolish kingdom

  537. and it will not

  538. be like that

  539. forever.

  540. That's how it starts.

  541. It's not how it ends.

  542. We have the small

  543. seed of the redwood tree

  544. and then we have

  545. the tallest tree

  546. in the entire world,

  547. well over 300 feet tall.

  548. same thing is here

  549. is true in the Bible.

  550. We have what we see

  551. of the kingdom

  552. in the gospel of Mark

  553. and we fast forward

  554. in the Bible

  555. to the very last book,

  556. the book of Revelation

  557. and we see the comeuppance

  558. of the kingdom.

  559. We see the final victory

  560. of the kingdom.

  561. There's this progression

  562. between what is true

  563. in Jesus' first coming

  564. when Jesus came

  565. as a baby

  566. into this world

  567. and what's true

  568. in Jesus' second coming.

  569. The coming

  570. that we look forward to

  571. when Jesus returns

  572. to this world

  573. as the victorious king

  574. taking his kingdom.

  575. And so we can compare

  576. not just the smallest seed

  577. to the greatest tree,

  578. we can also compare

  579. the smallness of the kingdom

  580. in the gospel of Mark

  581. to the greatest kingdom

  582. that we see

  583. in the book of Revelation.

  584. We can have

  585. a side-by-side picture.

  586. Yes, Jesus has a crown

  587. of thorns

  588. in his earthly ministry.

  589. In the book of Revelation,

  590. he comes not just

  591. with one crown

  592. but with multiple crowns.

  593. Revelation chapter 19,

    Revelation 19:12

  594. verse 12.

  595. His eyes are like

  596. a flame of fire

  597. and on his head

  598. are many diadems.

  599. Diadem being a fancy word

  600. for crown.

  601. And he has a name written

  602. that no one knows

  603. but himself.

  604. Yes, in his earthly ministry,

  605. Jesus comes in

  606. on a donkey

  607. and in the book of Revelation

  608. when he returns

  609. in his second coming,

  610. we see Jesus riding in

  611. on a war horse.

  612. Revelation 19, 11.

  613. Then I saw heaven open

  614. to behold a white horse.

  615. The one sitting on it

  616. is called Faithful and True

  617. and in righteousness

  618. he judges and makes wars.

  619. Yes, it's true

  620. that Jesus in his earthly ministry

  621. comes and appears

  622. in a stable

  623. and when we find him

  624. after his second coming

  625. in the book of Revelation,

  626. he is not sitting

  627. in a stable

  628. but he is on a throne.

  629. Revelation chapter 22,

    Revelation 22:3

  630. verse 3.

  631. The throne of God

  632. and of the Lamb

  633. will be in it.

  634. Yes, the kingdom is small now.

  635. It will not be small forever.

  636. Yes, we struggle

  637. with these doubts

  638. in this world

  639. just like these other disciples

  640. wondering if Jesus

  641. is truly the king

  642. that he says that he is

  643. coming to bring the kingdom

  644. that's been promised.

  645. Why does it seem

  646. so underwhelming

  647. and powerless?

  648. And Jesus comes

  649. with this parable

  650. and encouragement

  651. to his people

  652. to remind them,

  653. yes, it may seem small

  654. and insignificant

  655. and weak and foolish

  656. and shameful now

  657. but we are looking forward

  658. to the day

  659. when it will be great

  660. and powerful and majestic.

  661. Not just great

  662. but the greatest

  663. of all the nations

  664. and kingdoms.

  665. It starts

  666. as the smallest of seeds.

  667. It will be

  668. the greatest of trees.

  669. Jesus then

  670. is giving us

  671. his followers

  672. the critical assurance

  673. that we need

  674. as we follow him

  675. as our king

  676. into his kingdom

  677. in this world

  678. which is this

  679. that ultimate victory

  680. is guaranteed

  681. and it is coming.

  682. God's power

  683. is going to show up

  684. in an even greater

  685. and more majestic way

  686. than we can imagine now.

  687. It's the reminder

  688. that we saw together

  689. week after week

  690. in the book of Daniel

  691. that no matter

  692. how bad things get

  693. God is still in control.

  694. No matter how bad things get

  695. no matter how small

  696. and weak

  697. and insignificant things are

  698. we can know

  699. and trust

  700. that God's kingdom

  701. is still coming

  702. and it will come

  703. in full.

  704. Jesus here

  705. is giving us

  706. a vision

  707. of future orientation

  708. that we look forward

  709. to the great tree.

  710. Brothers and sisters

  711. as we live

  712. as Christians

  713. in this world

  714. at times

  715. feeling like

  716. we're stumbling along

  717. we also look forward

  718. to the greatest tree.

  719. We look forward

  720. to God's kingdom

  721. knowing that it will come

  722. in its fullness

  723. and it will be a place

  724. of God's holiness

  725. and justice

  726. and goodness

  727. and mercy

  728. and love.

  729. It will be

  730. the great tree

  731. to which

  732. all the nations

  733. come.

  734. It will be

  735. the kingdom

  736. above

  737. every other

  738. kingdom.

  739. In fact

  740. that's also

  741. what we see

  742. in the book

  743. of Revelation

  744. which includes

  745. in chapter 22

  746. a tree.

  747. Then the angel

  748. showed me

  749. the river

  750. of the water

  751. of life

  752. bright as crystal

  753. flowing from

  754. the throne of God

  755. and of the Lamb

  756. through the middle

  757. of the street

  758. of the city.

  759. Also

  760. on either side

  761. of the river

  762. the tree

  763. of life

  764. with its 12

  765. kinds of fruit

  766. yielding its fruit

  767. each month.

  768. The leaves

  769. of the tree

  770. were for the healing

  771. of the nations.

  772. I'm going to read

  773. that last sentence

  774. again.

  775. The leaves

  776. of the tree

  777. were for the healing

  778. of the nations.

  779. That's the same

  780. imagery we saw

  781. in our Old Testament

  782. reading from Ezekiel

  783. and the imagery

  784. we see here

  785. verse 32.

  786. Yet when it is sown

  787. it grows up

  788. and becomes larger

  789. than all the garden

  790. plants

  791. and puts out

  792. large branches

  793. so that the birds

  794. of the air

  795. can make nests

  796. in its shade.

  797. Remember we read

  798. from Ezekiel.

  799. I encourage you

  800. by the way

  801. if you look

  802. in your worship guide

  803. on pages 3 and 4

  804. it's something

  805. you can do

  806. if you show up

  807. early to our

  808. worship service

  809. and take a minute

  810. to look at our

  811. Old Testament passage

  812. and how it relates

  813. to our New Testament

  814. passage.

  815. I'm not going to go

  816. into it all now

  817. but you'll see

  818. there's an explanation

  819. there on pages 3 and 4

  820. how it is

  821. that Ezekiel 17

  822. connects here

  823. to our passage

  824. and the main point

  825. is this.

  826. In Ezekiel 17

  827. we see all these

  828. different kinds of birds

  829. finding shelter

  830. in a tree.

  831. Those birds represent

  832. the nations of the earth.

  833. In Mark chapter 4

    Mark 4 chapter mention

  834. we see all these

  835. different birds

  836. coming to take shelter

  837. in a tree.

  838. Those birds represent

  839. the nations of the earth.

  840. In other words

  841. the kingdom's greatness

  842. is expressed

  843. in the fact

  844. that all different people

  845. from every type

  846. and nation

  847. and tongue

  848. will come to be a part

  849. of God's kingdom

  850. and worship him.

  851. This is the image

  852. that we're given

  853. throughout the Old Testament

  854. that Jesus brings

  855. into reality

  856. in the New Testament

  857. which is that

  858. the kingdom of God

  859. is not just for Jews

  860. it is for anyone

  861. and everyone

  862. in this world

  863. who comes

  864. and recognizes

  865. Jesus as the true

  866. and great king.

  867. All the nations

  868. of the earth

  869. will come

  870. and be a part of this.

  871. And so we begin

  872. to see again

  873. the logic

  874. of why the kingdom

  875. must be small

  876. and become great

  877. not just to highlight

  878. God's greatness

  879. and his glory

  880. although yes

  881. that is true

  882. but also because

  883. it is the smallness

  884. that leads

  885. to the greatness.

  886. In other words

  887. the only way

  888. that Jesus can bring

  889. all the nations

  890. to find shelter

  891. in his tree

  892. is if he dies

  893. for their sins.

  894. It is by coming

  895. as a suffering savior

  896. that he's able

  897. to enable

  898. and empower

  899. people from every tribe

  900. and nation and tongue

  901. to come and worship him

  902. because those

  903. who are finding shelter

  904. under the tree

  905. are those who have come

  906. to Jesus Christ

  907. as their Lord and Savior

  908. recognizing that he

  909. is the one

  910. and true king

  911. who they worship

  912. and love

  913. and serve

  914. and obey.

  915. And it's Jesus' death

  916. that makes that possible.

  917. It's the smallness

  918. of the kingdom

  919. that enables

  920. the greatness.

  921. It's because Jesus

  922. came to die

  923. that he's able

  924. to provide shelter

  925. for all the birds.

  926. It's because of his death

  927. that he's able

  928. to come

  929. and bring people

  930. from all over the world

  931. to be a part

  932. of his kingdom.

  933. The ultimate greatness

  934. of the kingdom

  935. is for you.

  936. The ultimate greatness

  937. of the kingdom

  938. is that Jesus

  939. is able to bring you

  940. to be a part of it.

  941. The flip side,

  942. however,

  943. of the tree

  944. is this.

  945. Yes,

  946. Jesus will rule

  947. over the nations.

  948. He'll provide shelter

  949. for the nations.

  950. And those who choose

  951. not to find shelter

  952. in him

  953. will perish.

  954. There are birds

  955. who choose

  956. to find shelter

  957. under this tree

  958. and those who do not.

  959. And so,

  960. brothers and sisters,

  961. the choice

  962. for us

  963. is clear.

  964. There are only two ways

  965. to live in this world.

  966. We can live

  967. finding shelter

  968. under the tree

  969. of the kingdom of God

  970. or we can

  971. perish apart from it.

  972. Those are the only

  973. two choices

  974. God gives us

  975. in this world.

  976. We have to embrace

  977. the smallness

  978. of the kingdom

  979. to experience

  980. its greatness.

  981. We have to follow

  982. the path

  983. that Jesus gives us

  984. in Mark 1,

    Mark 1:15

  985. verse 15,

  986. that we repent

  987. and believe

  988. the gospel.

  989. We recognize

  990. that it is not

  991. a path of victory

  992. first but of suffering

  993. just like our Lord

  994. and Savior Jesus Christ.

  995. And that

  996. is how

  997. he provides

  998. for the nations

  999. to find shelter.

  1000. In the show

  1001. Climbing the Redwood Giants,

  1002. they don't just cover

  1003. that photographer.

  1004. They also follow

  1005. this forest ecologist

  1006. named Steve Sillett.

  1007. And Steve wants

1008. to be the first person

  1009. to explore

  1010. the canopy

  1011. of redwood trees.

  1012. Turns out

  1013. people had not

  1014. gone up

  1015. into the top

  1016. of these trees

  1017. because the lowest

  1018. branches were

  1019. 200 feet

  1020. off the ground.

  1021. And so he wants

  1022. to do what's called

  1023. canopy work.

  1024. No one had touched

  1025. it until 1996.

  1026. What he comes

  1027. and finds

  1028. when he climbs

  1029. 200 feet up

  1030. is something

  1031. incredibly surprising.

  1032. there are limbs

  1033. on this tree

  1034. that are themselves

  1035. the size of trees.

  1036. And on top

  1037. of those limbs

  1038. there are

  1039. three feet

  1040. of soil.

  1041. There is a

  1042. whole world

  1043. living

  1044. 200 feet

  1045. off the ground.

  1046. He finds

  1047. huckleberry bushes

  1048. with fruit

  1049. that he can eat

  1050. and there are

  1051. salamanders

  1052. that live

  1053. 200 feet

  1054. off the ground

  1055. in these trees.

  1056. In fact,

  1057. they tell us

  1058. some salamanders

  1059. may live

  1060. and die

  1061. in a single tree

  1062. without ever

  1063. touching the ground.

  1064. There's a

  1065. whole other

  1066. world

  1067. living in the

  1068. canopy

  1069. of these trees

  1070. 200 feet

  1071. off the ground.

  1072. In other words,

  1073. this tree,

  1074. just like

  1075. the kingdom,

  1076. provides life

  1077. to surprising

  1078. candidates.

  1079. This tree,

  1080. just like

  1081. the kingdom,

  1082. provides shelter

  1083. and protection

  1084. for all

  1085. sorts

  1086. of creatures.

  1087. Our greatest

  1088. illustration

  1089. of all

  1090. of moving

  1091. from

  1092. the small

  1093. to the great

  1094. is the cross.

  1095. We've seen

  1096. before that

  1097. the crucifixion

  1098. is the smallest

  1099. thing,

  1100. the most

  1101. shameful thing,

  1102. and it

  1103. leads to

  1104. Jesus'

  1105. glorification,

  1106. the greatest

  1107. thing,

  1108. the most

  1109. glorious

  1110. thing.

  1111. Again,

  1112. from Philippians

    Philippians 2 chapter mention

  1113. chapter 2.

  1114. At the name

  1115. of Jesus,

  1116. every knee

  1117. should bow

  1118. in heaven

  1119. and on earth

  1120. and under

  1121. the earth,

  1122. and every

  1123. tongue confess

  1124. that Jesus

  1125. Christ is

  1126. Lord to

  1127. the glory

  1128. of God

  1129. the Father.

  1130. Our passage

  1131. tells us

  1132. some simple

  1133. things.

  1134. the kingdom

  1135. of God

  1136. has a

  1137. beginning

  1138. and it's

  1139. small and

  1140. foolish and

  1141. unexpected.

  1142. The kingdom

  1143. of God

  1144. has an

  1145. end

  1146. and it's

  1147. the greatest

  1148. and the

  1149. most powerful.

  1150. And unlike

  1151. other great

  1152. and powerful

  1153. kingdoms,

  1154. it is loving

  1155. and benevolent.

  1156. It provides

  1157. shelter for

  1158. anyone

  1159. who will come

  1160. and find it.

  1161. the

  1162. photographer

  1163. I mentioned

  1164. at the

  1165. beginning,

  1166. Nichols,

  1167. said this

  1168. as he's

  1169. searching

  1170. this most

  1171. impressive

  1172. photograph

  1173. that will

  1174. finally help

  1175. people to

  1176. understand the

  1177. greatness of

  1178. the redwood

  1179. tree.

  1180. At the end

  1181. of the day,

  1182. all I'm

  1183. after is the

  1184. glory of

  1185. this tree.

  1186. And the

  1187. forest ecologist

  1188. Steve Sillett

  1189. says this,

  1190. if you're

  1191. lucky enough

  1192. to get up

  1193. into the

  1194. crowns of

  1195. one of

  1196. these trees,

  1197. it puts

  1198. your own

  1199. insignificant

  1200. existence

  1201. in perspective.

  1202. It makes

  1203. you realize

  1204. there's something

  1205. much greater

  1206. than yourself,

  1207. so much

  1208. vaster

  1209. than you.

  1210. Brothers and

  1211. sisters,

  1212. there is

  1213. something so

  1214. much greater

  1215. and so much

  1216. vaster than

  1217. us.

  1218. It is

  1219. the kingdom

  1220. of God.

  1221. God

  1222. may look

  1223. small now,

  1224. but it

  1225. will prevail

  1226. and be

  1227. the greatest

  1228. one day.

  1229. It is like

  1230. a grain of

  1231. mustard seed,

  1232. which when

  1233. sown on the

  1234. ground is

  1235. the smallest

  1236. of all the

  1237. seeds on

  1238. earth.

  1239. Yet when

  1240. it is sown,

  1241. it grows up

  1242. and becomes

  1243. larger than

  1244. all the

  1245. garden plants

  1246. and puts

  1247. out large

  1248. branches,

  1249. so that the

  1250. birds of the

  1251. air can make

  1252. nests in

  1253. its shade.

  1254. Let's pray.

  1255. Our

  1256. Father in

  1257. heaven,

  1258. we thank

  1259. you for

  1260. this

  1261. encouragement

  1262. from your

  1263. word,

  1264. this reminder

  1265. of your

  1266. kingdom that

  1267. is to come.

  1268. We ask

  1269. that you

  1270. would be at

  1271. work in

  1272. our hearts,

  1273. that we

  1274. would embrace

  1275. and love

  1276. the foolishness,

  1277. the weakness

  1278. of the gospel,

  1279. that it would

  1280. be our power,

  1281. and you'd give

  1282. us the hope

  1283. that comes

  1284. from looking

  1285. forward to

  1286. your kingdom

  1287. when it comes

  1288. in fullness.

  1289. We ask all

  1290. these things

  1291. in the mighty

  1292. name of our

  1293. Lord and Savior,

  1294. Jesus Christ.

  1295. Amen.

  1296. Amen.

  1297. Amen.

  1298. Amen.

  1299. Amen.

  1300. Amen.
