  1. My name is Matthew Capone, and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church,

  2. and it's my joy to bring God's Word to you today.

  3. A special welcome if you're new or visiting with us.

  4. We're glad that you're here, and we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats,

  5. but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  6. And as we follow Jesus together, we become convinced that there's no one so good,

  7. they don't need God's grace, and no one so bad that they can't have it.

  8. Which is why we come back week after week to hear what God has to say to us in His Word.

  9. We're continuing our series in the Gospel of Mark.

  10. You'll remember that the Gospels tell the story of Jesus in His life and His death and His resurrection.

  11. And as we come to this Gospel, there are two questions in particular that it asks us.

  12. First of all, who is Jesus? And second, how do we respond to Him?

  13. I've mentioned before, these are not questions that we're imposing on the text from the outside.

  14. They're actually questions that come out of the text from the inside.

  15. And we'll see this explicitly for the first time in our passage this week.

  16. It's in verse 41 of Mark chapter 4 that the disciples say,

    Mark 4 chapter mention

  17. Who then is this that even the wind and the sea obey Him?

  18. And this question from the disciples is meant to be our question as well.

  19. We'll see that question again as we go through the Gospel, especially in Mark chapter 8.

    Mark 8 chapter mention

  20. So this is the first time, but not the last time, that we'll understand this is the question this Gospel intends for us to ask.

  21. We've moved on from the kingdom parables, at least for now.

  22. And this week we're going to look at one of the most famous stories in the Bible,

  23. where Jesus calms the storm, and there's this gap that we'll see between what we say that we believe

  24. and what we actually show that we believe.

  25. In fact, perhaps most likely we're tempted, like the disciples,

  26. to wonder whether God actually cares when we find ourselves in the midst of a storm.

  27. And so our big question this morning is this.

  28. How does following Jesus change our response to overwhelming situations?

  29. How does following Jesus change our response to overwhelming situations?

  30. How does it change our response when we lose a job or miss a promotion?

  31. How does it change our response when we find out about a life-threatening illness for ourselves or someone else?

  32. How does it change our response when we find out that a loved one has been seriously injured?

  33. That's with that question that we turn now to God's Word.

  34. I invite you to turn with me.

  35. We're in Mark chapter 4, starting at verse 35.

    Mark 4 chapter mention

  36. You can turn with me in your worship guide.

  37. You can turn on your phone.

  38. You can turn in your Bible.

  39. No matter where you turn, remember that this is God's Word.

  40. And God tells us that His Word is more precious than gold,

  41. even the finest gold, and it's sweeter than honey,

  42. even honey that comes straight from the honeycomb.

  43. And so that's why we read now, starting at verse 35.

  44. On that day, when evening had come, He said to them,

  45. Let us go across to the other side.

  46. And leaving the crowd, they took Him with them in the boat, just as He was.

  47. And other boats were with Him.

  48. And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat,

  49. so that the boat was already filling.

  50. But He was in the stern, asleep on the cushion.

  51. And they woke Him and said to Him,

  52. Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?

  53. Verse 39.

  54. And He awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea,

  55. Peace, be still.

  56. And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm.

  57. He said to them, Why are you so afraid?

  58. Have you still no faith?

  59. And they were filled with great fear and said to one another,

  60. Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?

  61. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's Word.

  62. Our Father in Heaven, You promise us in Isaiah 55 that Your Word will not return to You empty,

  63. but it will accomplish the purpose for which You sent it.

  64. And so we ask You this morning simply that You would honor that promise.

  65. That as we look at Your Word, it would accomplish purposes in our lives.

  66. That it would encourage us with Your grace.

  67. It would challenge us for our need for it.

  68. And most of all, You would show us Jesus in His beauty and His glory.

  69. Paul tells us in 1 Corinthians 2 that unless the Holy Spirit is with us,

  70. we won't be able to understand.

  71. And so we ask that You'd give us the Spirit and that we would understand.

  72. That we would see and know and believe You more and more.

  73. We ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

  74. Amen.

  75. As we start this story at the very beginning on verse 35,

  76. it tells us that this happened on that day,

  77. which pulls us back to the very beginning of chapter 4

  78. when Jesus began teaching by the sea.

  79. If you remember from verse 1, it says,

  80. again, He began to teach beside the sea.

  81. And so what we're realizing here is that what we have covered

  82. as a congregation over the last four weeks,

  83. Jesus teaching about the kingdom of God in Mark chapter 4

    Mark 4 chapter mention

  84. is something that He actually did in one teaching session.

  85. Even more than that, we're told in Mark chapter 4 verse 2

    Mark 4:2

  86. that He was teaching the many things.

  87. So we've spent four weeks covering part of what Jesus taught in one day.

  88. We're getting a sample of what He gave to this people.

  89. So we come now then on the same day that that's all happened.

  90. We're at the end of the day, we're told.

  91. It says in verse 35,

  92. when evening had come.

  93. And this is going to help us understand

  94. why Jesus probably falls asleep quickly in this story.

  95. He's ended a very long day.

  96. Anyway, verse 36,

  97. they took Him with them in the boat just as He was.

  98. And so they're probably just scooping Him right off the shore.

  99. If you remember at the beginning of the chapter,

  100. Jesus had gone out onto this boat,

  101. which had served as His natural sound system

  102. so He could speak across the water

  103. that amplified His voice to the people

  104. who were sitting up on the hill by the sea.

  105. But we're told later in verse 10

  106. that Jesus went out to answer some questions.

  107. So either they're scooping Jesus up right off the shore

  108. and putting Him in the boat,

  109. or He had returned into the boat.

  110. Either way, Jesus does not go off to do anything else.

  111. He immediately leaves this teaching task

  112. and He heads out with His disciples.

  113. Now, that's all background to what we're coming up against.

  114. Everything's fine at this point

  115. until we hit verses 37 and 38

  116. where we see the real problem that's at work here.

  117. Verse 36, everything is great.

  118. They're traveling out.

  119. There are other boats with them.

  120. Verse 37, things get hairy.

  121. A great windstorm arose

  122. and the waves were breaking into the boat

  123. so that the boat was already filling up.

  124. Now, storm comes.

  125. We know storms are actually incredibly common

  126. on the Sea of Galilee.

  127. There's some science around this.

  128. The sea is at a low elevation.

  129. It's below sea level.

  130. It has hills right around it that are higher.

  131. And so there's this interaction that happens

  132. between hot air and cold air

  133. that causes wind to stir up on the sea.

  134. In other words, this is not an uncommon occurrence.

  135. These are fishermen.

  136. You'll remember from earlier in the gospel.

  137. They're familiar with this sea.

  138. This is their home court.

  139. This is nothing new for them.

  140. So on the one hand, these storms are common.

  141. On the other hand, this particular storm is not.

  142. We see that very quickly.

  143. This one is actually dangerous.

  144. It's threatening.

  145. It's frightening.

  146. Verse 37, the waves were breaking into the boat

  147. so that the boat was already filling.

  148. It's going to be a short amount of time

  149. before there's so much water in this boat

  150. that it sinks.

  151. Verse 38, in case we have any doubt,

  152. the disciples say,

  153. do you not care that we are perishing?

  154. They know that death could be imminent.

  155. And these are coming from fishermen,

  156. and they're very experienced.

  157. They're not easily scared.

  158. They're here on their home turf.

  159. And so what we know is this.

  160. They have assessed the situation correctly.

  161. If someone who grew up in the desert

  162. tells you it's hot, you know it's hot.

  163. If someone who grew up in the Arctic Circle

  164. tells you it's cold, you know it's cold.

  165. If someone who's a seasoned fisherman

  166. tells you on their home turf sea

  167. that you're about to die,

  168. you're probably about to die.

  169. Okay, so this is an uncommon storm

  170. that is incredibly serious.

  171. This storm is about to kill them.

  172. Now, it's not just the threat of the storm

  173. that has them stirred up.

  174. It's also a frustration with Jesus in action.

  175. There's this incredible disconnect

  176. between their present circumstances,

  177. their immediate circumstances,

  178. and Jesus' response.

  179. On the one hand, death is an option for them.

  180. And it could be an option very quickly.

  181. On the other hand, Jesus is asleep.

  182. Now, I'll tell you,

  183. it makes total sense that Jesus is sleeping.

  184. He's had a long day.

  185. There are few things better

  186. after preaching and teaching

  187. to take a good and righteous nap.

  188. And so I feel Jesus on this one.

  189. When I grew up as a 90s kid,

  190. and if you were in Christian culture in the 90s,

  191. you remember people had those bracelets

  192. that said WWJD on them.

  193. What would Jesus do?

  194. I had one of those.

  195. I think mine was orange,

  196. if I remember correctly.

  197. What would Jesus do after preaching?

  198. This passage clearly tells us

  199. he would take a nap.

  200. And so I may even follow

  201. the example of our Lord later today.

  202. Makes sense, right?

  203. Jesus is tired from a full day.

  204. He's asleep.

  205. We actually find out, verse 35,

  206. this is not just a nap.

  207. Evening had come,

  208. and so Jesus is going to bed early.

  209. There's a few things that we learned

  210. from Jesus sleeping here.

  211. We'll talk about that in a minute.

  212. Right now, I want you to see the fear

  213. and the frustration that the disciples

  214. feel in this situation.

  215. In fact, we see it in their question,

  216. verse 38.

  217. Do you not care that we are perishing?

  218. We'll come back to that question in a minute,

  219. but our first question here is,

  220. who is Jesus?

  221. So I want us to keep moving to verse 39.

  222. Jesus is sleeping.

  223. Verse 38, they wake him up.

  224. Verse 39, he revises,

  225. he rebukes the wind and says to the sea,

  226. peace, be still.

  227. Jesus gets up and he calms the storm

  228. using the very same words

  229. that he used earlier in the gospel

  230. to rebuke demons.

  231. He is not casting something out at this point,

  232. though.

  233. He's commanding nature,

  234. and it obeys.

  235. Jesus commands nature with his words.

  236. It does what he says.

  237. Who is Jesus?

  238. We have a partial answer here.

  239. He is the one who controls

  240. and commands nature itself

  241. with only his words.

  242. That doesn't fully, fully answer our question,

  243. though, because the disciples know that,

  244. and that's why they ask the question

  245. in verse 41.

  246. Who is this that even the wind

  247. and the sea obey him?

  248. And so we have to keep digging deeper

  249. to figure out who is Jesus in this situation.

  250. If you've already looked at your worship guide

  251. and you've read our explanation

  252. for the Old Testament reading,

  253. you know there's only one biblical character

  254. who's able to regularly control creation

  255. with his words.

  256. It is God himself.

  257. In fact, God not only controls creation

  258. with his words, he also creates it.

  259. Go back all the way to the very beginning

  260. of the Bible in Genesis chapter one.

  261. We know that it's God who made the world

  262. out of nothing just by speaking.

  263. We saw in our Old Testament reading

  264. from Psalm 107 that God is the one

  265. who calms the seas and the storms.

  266. In fact, we saw that in verse 29.

  267. It says this,

  268. he made the storm be still

  269. and the waves of the sea were hushed.

  270. There are other places in the Old Testament

  271. that tell us this as well,

  272. especially the book of Job,

  273. that it is God who has power

  274. and authority and control over nature.

  275. It is God and only God

  276. who creates things with a word.

  277. It is God and only God

  278. who controls things with a word.

  279. Who is Jesus?

  280. Jesus is not simply a good teacher.

  281. Jesus is not merely a good example.

  282. Jesus is the man who has the power

  283. that belongs to God and God alone.

  284. Jesus is God.

  285. That's why John chapter one,

  286. as it begins telling us the story of Jesus,

  287. tells us that in the beginning was the word

  288. and the word was with God

  289. and the world was made through him.

  290. Jesus was with God at the very beginning

  291. in Genesis chapter one.

  292. He was part of creating the world

  293. with just a word.

  294. In fact, even more than that,

  295. Jesus was the word.

  296. This is why we're told in Hebrews chapter one,

  297. verse three,

  298. that the world is upheld

  299. by the word of Jesus power.

  300. In other words,

  301. the reason that you're sitting here today

  302. and the world is holding together

  303. and not falling apart

  304. is because Jesus right now

  305. is sustaining it with his word.

  306. I had a conversation with someone earlier this week

  307. who is not a Christian

  308. and she told me,

  309. I actually have more of a,

  310. I have a science background

  311. and I have a science perspective on the world.

  312. And so that's part of why I'm not religious.

  313. And so I've been thinking about that all week.

  314. And I'll say this,

  315. it's because Jesus upholds the world

  316. with his word

  317. that we can believe in science.

  318. That is the reason that the world is predictable.

  319. That is the reason we can have faith

  320. in the scientific method.

  321. That is why we can expect things

  322. to operate in the same way over and over.

  323. We live, in other words,

  324. in this orderly predictable world

  325. because it was created and held together

  326. by an orderly predictable God.

  327. If we served a God who is chaotic and unstable,

  328. the world in which we live

  329. would be chaotic and unstable as well.

  330. It was David Hume in the 18th century

  331. who raised this problem,

  332. which is that we cannot believe

  333. that the sun will rise tomorrow

  334. simply because it rose yesterday.

  335. The fact that something happened in the past

  336. is not reason to know and believe

  337. it will happen in the future.

  338. That is in fact a leap of faith.

  339. In other words,

  340. the scientific method relies

  341. on something that cannot be proven,

  342. which is that this world

  343. is something that's predictable.

  344. This world is something that's stable.

  345. This world is something that operates

  346. by laws that we can understand and see.

  347. This is a way of saying

  348. that because Jesus is in control of the world,

  349. because he created it by his word,

  350. that is the reason we can explore

  351. and understand it with science.

  352. In fact, it's miracles,

  353. counterintuitively,

  354. that should give us greater trust in science.

  355. And this is why.

  356. Miracles confirm that God is in control of the world.

  357. Miracles confirm that God is in control of the world.

  358. If God is in control of the world,

  359. then we can have confidence

  360. that the world is predictable,

  361. that the world is organized,

  362. that the world operates by laws that don't change.

  363. It is Jesus' power.

  364. It's what we see in Hebrews 1, verse 3,

    Hebrews 1:3

  365. that he upholds the world with the word of his power

  366. that allows us,

  367. that provides the foundation for us

  368. to understand and explore this world with science.

  369. Jesus is the one who controls and creates the world.

  370. Jesus is the one who holds this universe together.

  371. That's only part of our answer, though.

  372. Yes, Jesus is God.

  373. Jesus is the one who creates and controls the world

  374. even more than that.

  375. That is not enough.

  376. Jesus is also benevolent.

  377. Jesus is not just powerful.

  378. He uses his power to save.

  379. Yes, Jesus commands nature,

  380. and he commands it for our protection,

  381. our salvation.

  382. Verse 38,

  383. Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?

  384. Yes.

  385. Yes, he does.

  386. In fact, there's incredible irony in their question

  387. because they are saying much more than they realize.

  388. Jesus cares so much that they are perishing

  389. that he's come to die for them.

  390. More than they can understand in that moment.

  391. They have a bigger problem than a storm on a sea,

  392. and God still meets them in that smaller problem.

  393. God came to earth as a man because they were perishing.

  394. God came to earth as a man because we are perishing.

  395. And so God uses his power.

  396. Jesus uses his power to save.

  397. He has come to deliver them from far much more than a storm.

  398. It's like we're told in Luke chapter 19,

    Luke 19 chapter mention

  399. for the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.

  400. Who is Jesus?

  401. Jesus is the one who controls nature with a word.

  402. Jesus is, in fact, God.

  403. And he's not only God,

  404. he's a God who cares for the perishing.

  405. Do you not care that we are perishing?

  406. Yes.

  407. Yes, he does.

  408. That's the God that we serve.

  409. That raises our next question here,

  410. which is, if that is Jesus, how do we respond to him?

  411. I've told you before that when we read the Bible,

  412. often we're presented with characters

  413. who serve as examples for us,

  414. sometimes positive examples,

  415. sometimes negative examples.

  416. In this passage, we see that same dynamic play out again.

  417. The disciples here are negative example.

  418. Verse 38 again, they ask this question,

  419. do you not care that we are perishing?

  420. In other words, they allow the difficulty

  421. that they're facing to lead to doubt.

  422. The disciples allow difficulty to lead to doubt.

  423. And Jesus says this explicitly,

  424. verse 40,

  425. why are you still afraid?

  426. Have you still no faith?

  427. Jesus is telling them that fear is the opposite of faith.

  428. The circumstances that they are in

  429. have revealed their small and shaky faith.

  430. When storms arise,

  431. our temptation is to doubt God's care and concern and his love.

  432. When storms arise,

  433. our temptation is to doubt God's care and his concern and his love.

  434. That's the trap the disciples fall into here.

  435. That's what Jesus rebukes them for.

  436. It's not a coincidence that this happens immediately

  437. after Jesus teaching about the kingdom.

  438. Even after hearing everything he's taught them

  439. throughout Mark chapter four,

  440. they are confused.

  441. They have not internalized what it is they're supposed to learn.

  442. They are coming off this teaching about the kingdom,

  443. still unable to apply it to their lives.

  444. And so one of the questions of this passage for us

  445. is how do we respond in difficulty?

  446. What does that reveal about us?

  447. When we're out of control,

  448. when we're powerless in this world,

  449. we're like the disciples when we're at the mercy of nature.

  450. How powerful do we believe God actually is?

  451. How much do we think that God actually cares?

  452. Do we really believe that God has not forgotten us?

  453. The disciples here fail this test.

  454. Often we do as well.

  455. Thankfully though,

  456. the disciples are not purely a negative example.

  457. They actually provide a couple things

  458. that they do correctly in this passage.

  459. First of all,

  460. they get the most important thing right

  461. that we've talked about before.

  462. The disciples are with Jesus.

  463. One man puts it this way,

  464. the disciples are in the right boat.

  465. And so another question is this,

  466. when the storm comes,

  467. which boat are you in?

  468. When the storm comes,

  469. which boat are you in?

  470. Are you in Jesus' boat?

  471. Or are you in your own boat?

  472. The disciples get something incredibly important right.

  473. They have decided to get into the right boat.

  474. They get something else right though.

  475. It's not just their location.

  476. They cry out to Jesus in their doubt.

  477. They're with Jesus.

  478. They turn towards Jesus.

  479. As fearful as they are,

  480. as much as Jesus rebukes them here in this situation,

  481. they do not rely on themselves and their resources.

  482. They rely on Jesus who is with them.

  483. And Jesus in his grace,

  484. he does rebuke them.

  485. He doesn't send them away.

  486. Jesus cares for them.

  487. Jesus saves them.

  488. And so the disciples here,

  489. they're mostly a negative,

  490. partially a positive example.

  491. Jesus here is our 100% positive example.

  492. Indirectly, he is demonstrating the sort of faith

  493. that he wants to see in his disciples.

  494. As Jesus is sleeping,

  495. there's a sense in which he is demonstrating

  496. his faith in God.

  497. In fact, I'm gonna invite you to turn to page five

  498. in your worship guide.

  499. We have this quote here on the top left.

  500. Deep, restful sleep embodies trust in God's sovereign hand.

  501. By sleeping during the storm,

  502. Jesus, the son of David,

  503. demonstrates his perfect and unswerving trust

  504. in his father's protection

  505. in the midst of grave physical and spiritual danger.

  506. The Old Testament does not just show us

  507. that God is the one who has control over nature.

  508. The Old Testament also shows us

  509. that sleep is what happens for those who trust God.

  510. Psalm chapter three,

  511. I lay down and slept.

  512. I awoke again for the Lord sustained me.

  513. I will not be afraid of many thousands of people

  514. who have set themselves against me all around.

  515. Notice that word there,

  516. I will not be afraid.

  517. I lay down and slept.

  518. Psalm 116,

  519. the righteous will never be moved.

  520. He will be remembered forever.

  521. He is not afraid of bad news.

  522. His heart is firm, trusting in the Lord.

  523. His heart is steady.

  524. He will not be afraid

  525. until he looks in triumph on his adversaries.

  526. Psalm 127,

  527. It is in vain that you rise up early

  528. and go late to rest,

  529. eating the bread of anxious toil,

  530. for he gives to his beloved sleep.

  531. Jesus has so much trust in God

  532. that he is able to rest in the midst of the storm.

  533. Jesus is modeling for his disciples

  534. and for us what it looks like

  535. to have trust and faith and confidence in God.

  536. Unshakeable faith in God means

  537. that no matter what happens,

  538. we are able to rest.

  539. Unshakeable faith in God means

  540. that no matter what happens,

  541. we understand that God is still in control.

  542. No matter what happens,

  543. unshakable trust and confidence in God

  544. means that we know God still cares.

  545. And so we can sleep.

  546. And so we can rest.

  547. And so we have calm in the midst of chaos.

  548. I'm gonna ask you to turn also to page three

  549. in your worship guide.

  550. You thought that was a quote about prayer,

  551. but it's about more than that.

  552. The second sentence says,

  553. learning to pray doesn't offer us a less busy life.

  554. It offers us a less busy heart.

  555. In the midst of outer busyness,

  556. we can develop an inner quiet.

  557. And I'm gonna change that quote.

  558. In the midst of chaos and threatening

  559. and life-altering situations,

  560. we can develop an inner quiet.

  561. It's a way of saying,

  562. while our circumstances may not change,

  563. our faith and trust and hope in God

  564. means that our response

  565. and the posture of our heart does.

  566. We may not escape challenging and terrifying

  567. and life-threatening situations.

  568. And we know that we can have a quiet heart.

  569. We can be like Jesus,

  570. able at times to sleep in the storm.

  571. The million dollar question of this passage though

  572. is what happens when Jesus doesn't calm the storm?

  573. Being a Christian,

  574. following Jesus does not mean

  575. that God is going to calm every storm in your life.

  576. In fact, it's because they're following Jesus

  577. in this passage that they find themselves in a storm.

  578. Jesus is the one who had the great idea

  579. of getting in the boat and going to the other side.

  580. So following Jesus is not necessarily

  581. going to keep you away from storms.

  582. In fact, sometimes it might take you straight into new storms.

  583. It doesn't take away the storm.

  584. It changes our response to the storm.

  585. Faith in God following Jesus

  586. does not always change our circumstances.

  587. Sometimes it makes them worse.

  588. It does change our perspective.

  589. It does change our hope.

  590. It does change where we set our eyes.

  591. Faith in God does not always change our circumstances.

  592. Sometimes, in fact, it makes it worse.

  593. It does change our perspective.

  594. It does change our hope.

  595. It does change where we place our lives.

  596. We know that God loves us

  597. and he will not let us perish.

  598. Faith does not mean believing

  599. that God will make everything okay now.

  600. Faith does mean believing

  601. that God will make everything okay fully

  602. and finally one day.

  603. Faith does mean believing

  604. that no matter what happens,

  605. we cannot lose what is most important.

  606. Even if we die,

  607. when we die,

  608. we will not die.

  609. even if we die.

  610. When we die,

  611. we won't die.

  612. We'll die physically.

  613. We will not die spiritually.

  614. In fact,

  615. believe it or not,

  616. all of the disciples

  617. who were in this boat

  618. died.

  619. They just didn't die that day.

  620. Right?

  621. They died eventually.

  622. Jesus did not,

  623. in other words,

  624. solve their ultimate problem.

  625. Jesus postponed death for them.

  626. He did not prevent death for them.

  627. Jesus doesn't say,

  628. peace be still

  629. in every circumstance.

  630. At risk of stating the obvious,

  631. sometimes Christians die in storms.

  632. Sometimes cancer kills someone.

  633. And,

  634. but,

  635. Jesus does say,

  636. peace be still,

  637. fully and finally.

  638. Jesus does say,

  639. peace be still,

  640. in such a way

  641. that what is most important,

  642. what is most valuable,

  643. which is our relationship with him,

  644. cannot be lost.

  645. Our life with him

  646. cannot be erased.

  647. Jesus could have refused

  648. to calm the storm

  649. in this story,

  650. and his words

  651. would still be true.

  652. Because he has already

  653. calmed the most important storm,

  654. the most threatening storm.

  655. Jesus said,

  656. peace be still,

  657. where it matters most.

  658. And so our hope

  659. is that no matter

  660. what storm comes,

  661. we know God

  662. is more powerful.

  663. Even more than that,

  664. verse 38,

  665. we know he cares.

  666. And so we can trust

  667. even when he doesn't

  668. calm the storm.

  669. When I call your attention

  670. to one more quote,

  671. today's quote Sunday,

  672. page five,

  673. the bottom left,

  674. this quote from Frederick Buechner

  675. captures what we're talking about.

  676. Here is the world.

  677. Beautiful and terrible things

  678. will happen.

  679. Don't be afraid.

  680. I am with you.

  681. Nothing can ever

  682. separate us.

  683. Why are we not afraid?

  684. Not because terrible things

  685. won't happen.

  686. They will.

  687. We are not afraid

  688. because of what Buechner

  689. says here.

  690. Nothing can separate us.

  691. Buechner's not putting words

  692. in God's mouth,

  693. by the way.

  694. He's paraphrasing

  695. the promises of Scripture,

  696. especially those

  697. from Romans chapter 8.

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  698. And so remember,

  699. our question at the very beginning

  700. of the sermon was,

  701. how does our faith

  702. and trust in God,

  703. how does following Jesus

  704. change our response

  705. in challenging

  706. and life-threatening circumstances?

  707. This is the answer.

  708. If you find out

  709. that you have cancer,

  710. remember,

  711. do not be afraid.

  712. I am with you.

  713. Nothing can ever

  714. separate us.

  715. When you finally realize

  716. that faith looks like

  717. admitting you may need

  718. to take medicine

  719. for your mental health,

  720. but you don't want

  721. to admit that you need help,

  722. don't be afraid.

  723. I am with you.

  724. Nothing can ever

  725. separate us.

  726. When you find out

  727. that your child

  728. was in a car accident,

  729. don't be afraid.

  730. I am with you.

  731. Nothing can ever

  732. separate us.

  733. When you lose your job,

  734. don't be afraid.

  735. I am with you.

  736. Nothing can ever

  737. separate us.

  738. Here is the world.

  739. Beautiful and terrible

  740. things will happen.

  741. If you live long enough,

  742. you will see

  743. not just a few of them,

  744. but many of them.

  745. And so we're not here

  746. to have some sort of

  747. denial of reality.

  748. We're not here

  749. to have some easy

  750. believism that God

  751. is going to remove

  752. every storm in our lives.

  753. Simply this,

  754. that we have an

  755. unshakable trust in God,

  756. that we have quiet hearts

  757. in the midst

  758. of a tumultuous

  759. and threatening world.

  760. We have unshakable

  761. hope and faith

  762. and trust in God.

  763. Our hope ultimately

  764. is that not that

  765. Jesus is going to face

  766. the threat of death

  767. in a storm,

  768. but that Jesus is going

  769. to face death itself.

  770. 1 Corinthians chapter 15

    1 Corinthians 15 chapter mention

  771. reminds us that

  772. Jesus is the one

  773. who faces death down

  774. and puts death to death.

  775. Jesus is the one

  776. who takes not just

  777. this one storm

  778. on one day,

  779. he is the one

  780. who takes on

  781. an even greater storm.

  782. Jesus comes to calm

  783. the storm of God's

  784. wrath and judgment

  785. coming onto the world

  786. because of our sin

  787. and our rebellion

  788. against him,

  789. that we have refused

  790. to listen to God,

  791. to obey him,

  792. to love him,

  793. and to worship him.

  794. And that is the ultimate storm

  795. that we need Jesus' help

  796. and his rescue from.

  797. And that is the storm

  798. that in every situation

  799. for those who trust

  800. and believe

  801. and follow in him,

  802. Jesus truly does say,

  803. peace, be still.

  804. And it's because

  805. Jesus calms that storm

  806. that no matter

  807. what happens

  808. in this world

  809. and in our lives,

  810. we know

  811. that there is nothing

  812. that can separate us

  813. from the love of God

  814. in Christ Jesus.

  815. That is the reason

  816. that we can have

  817. the unshakable faith

  818. and confidence

  819. that Jesus models

  820. in this passage

  821. that no matter

  822. what happens,

  823. our trust and faith

  824. in God means

  825. that we can rest.

  826. Our trust and faith

  827. and confidence in God

  828. means that we can have

  829. quiet hearts

  830. in a chaotic world,

  831. in a threatening world,

  832. in a world

  833. that is falling apart

  834. because of sin.

  835. It's a storm

  836. Jesus always takes away

  837. for those who trust

  838. and follow him.

  839. If you've been with us

  840. for a while,

  841. you know

  842. I like to talk

  843. about hailstorms.

  844. I was, of course,

  845. overly traumatized

  846. by the hailstorms

  847. in 2018.

  848. Then we got another

  849. hailstorm in 2020

  850. back in August.

  851. 2018,

  852. I was not a homeowner.

  853. 2020,

  854. I was a homeowner.

  855. If you remember,

  856. I think it was sometime

  857. between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m.

  858. It was late in the afternoon.

  859. I was working from home

  860. and this hailstorm

  861. started in August

  862. and I could see it coming in

  863. and so I went into my bathroom

  864. where there's a skylight

  865. and I watched the hail

  866. hit on my skylight

  867. wondering if it was

  868. going to hold up.

  869. In that moment,

  870. as a homeowner,

  871. I knew that my roof

  872. was probably toast.

  873. I knew that it was

  874. probably going to take

  875. thousands of dollars

  876. to repair.

  877. I knew that I had

  878. a long journey

  879. ahead of me

  880. to get that roof

  881. replaced.

  882. And I had a calm

  883. and quiet heart.

  884. Why?

  885. Because I knew

  886. who I was with.

  887. State Farm.

  888. And what does

  889. State Farm promise?

  890. Like a good neighbor,

  891. State Farm is there.

  892. Point is this.

  893. My circumstances

  894. did not change

  895. in any way.

  896. State Farm was not

  897. going to come

  898. and stop that storm

  899. from hitting me.

  900. And I have a contract

  901. and an agreement

  902. with State Farm.

  903. They have made promises

  904. to me about how

  905. they're going to show up

  906. in certain situations.

  907. I know I'm not

  908. going to be the one

  909. who has to pay

  910. the debt of that roof.

  911. And so as I think

  912. about thousands of dollars

  913. of repairs ahead of me,

  914. that night I slept.

  915. Brothers and sisters,

  916. we have something

  917. so much greater

  918. and more powerful

  919. than State Farm

  920. on our side.

  921. As we find ourselves

  922. in the storms

  923. and circumstances

  924. of life,

  925. we know no matter

  926. what

  927. that God

  928. is with us.

  929. We know

  930. no matter what

  931. that He is the one

  932. who will protect us

  933. and keep us

  934. from all evil.

  935. We know

  936. He is the one

  937. who guarantees

  938. that what is most valuable

  939. and precious

  940. we cannot lose.

  941. Who is Jesus?

  942. Jesus is the one

  943. who controls

  944. nature with a word.

  945. Jesus is the one

  946. who is God Himself.

  947. He is the one

  948. who comes

  949. not just with power

  950. but with care.

  951. He loves us.

  952. How do we respond to Him?

  953. We have unshakable

  954. faith

  955. and trust

  956. and confidence

  957. in Him.

  958. Romans chapter 8

    Romans 8 chapter mention

  959. says this,

  960. For I am sure

  961. that neither death

  962. nor life

  963. nor angels

  964. nor rulers

  965. nor things present

  966. nor things to come

  967. nor powers

  968. nor height

  969. nor depth

  970. nor anything else

  971. in all creation

  972. will be able

  973. to separate us

  974. from the love of God

  975. in Christ Jesus

  976. our Lord.

  977. There is nothing

  978. and no one

  979. who is outside

  980. of His control.

  981. Rest

  982. and trust.

  983. Verse 38

  984. 41

  985. Even the wind

  986. and the sea

  987. obey Him.

  988. Let's pray.

  989. Our Father in Heaven

  990. we praise You

  991. and thank You

  992. that You have given us

  993. not simply stories

  994. but stories

  995. that tell us

  996. what is true

  997. about this world.

  998. We thank You

  999. that Jesus

  1000. is with us

  1001. and He's not just

  1002. powerful

  1003. but He also cares.

  1004. We ask that You

  1005. would use that truth

  1006. and You drive it

  1007. deep into our hearts

  1008. that we

  1009. would rest

  1010. more and more

  1011. in You

  1012. and Your care

  1013. and Your provision.

  1014. We ask these things

  1015. in the mighty name

  1016. of Jesus Christ.

  1017. Amen.

  1018. Amen.

  1019. Amen.

  1020. Amen.

  1021. Amen.

  1022. Amen.

  1023. Amen.

  1024. Amen.

  1025. Amen.

  1026. Amen.

  1027. Amen.
