  1. Good morning. My name is Matthew Capone and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church and it's my joy to bring God's word to you today.

  2. I was up this morning getting excited about this passage and then I saw the snow and my first thought was, man, I really hope we don't have to cancel worship.

  3. I'd much rather be with you all here in person than try to preach to you through a screen.

  4. So I appreciate you all being here. I'm glad you all made it. Of course, I'm certainly glad for those who made the decision that it was wise for them to stay home as well.

  5. So don't hear what I'm not saying, but I'm glad that we are all here together and I'm thankful that you're here.

  6. Special welcome if you're new or visiting with us. We're glad that you're here and we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats,

  7. but because we're following Jesus together as one community and as we follow Jesus together,

  8. we become convinced that there's no one so good, they don't need God's grace and no one so bad that they can't have it,

  9. which is why we come back week after week to hear what God has to say to us in his word.

  10. We're continuing our series in the Gospel of Mark.

  11. You'll remember that the Gospels tell the story of Jesus and his life and his death and his resurrection.

  12. And we come today to the second half of Mark chapter 5.

    Mark 5 chapter mention

  13. You'll remember the last two weeks we've had these two stories that were pairs that went together.

  14. The first one was Jesus' power and control over nature.

  15. And the second one last week was Jesus' power and control over evil and demonic forces.

  16. This week we come against something interesting.

  17. We have what might be called a sandwich or a bookend or a split screen,

  18. which is a way of saying we have two stories.

  19. One wraps around the other.

  20. And so it's a way that Mark is putting these two things together.

  21. We have the bread of the story, which is about this man named Jairus,

  22. whose daughter needs to be healed.

  23. That story gets split in half and there's a story in the middle

  24. about this woman who needs to be healed from 12 years of bleeding.

  25. And when we run into something like this in the Bible,

  26. when we hit up against a sandwich, it is not by accident.

  27. It is something extremely intentional on the part of the narrator

  28. to connect these two stories to teach us something we would not learn otherwise

  29. if they were apart.

  30. And so we're going to do both of these stories together this morning,

  31. which means we're going to have a slightly longer passage.

  32. It also means I'm going to say something, not everything,

  33. because we're handling two stories at the same time.

  34. And so our focus, our strategy going in is we're going to look at what we learn

  35. by the fact that these are both together,

  36. which means we're not going to talk about every detail of every story.

  37. We're not going to answer every question.

  38. In fact, not all my questions are answered.

  39. These two stories raise all kinds of interesting issues.

  40. But as you listen this morning and as I read,

  41. I'm going to ask you to think about this question.

  42. Why are these two stories placed together?

  43. What is it that we learn from the two of them wrapped around each other

  44. that we wouldn't learn if we read each of them separately?

  45. And our focus is going to be two different questions.

  46. I bet you can't guess what they are.

  47. Question one, who is Jesus?

  48. Question two, how do we respond to him?

  49. And so with that, I invite you to turn with me in your Bible

  50. or in your worship guide or on your phone to Mark chapter 5.

    Mark 5 chapter mention

  51. No matter where you turn, remember that this is God's word.

  52. And God tells us that his word is more precious than gold,

  53. even the finest gold, and it's sweeter than honey,

  54. even honey that comes straight from the honeycomb.

  55. And so that's why we read now, starting at verse 21.

  56. And when Jesus had crossed again in the boat to the other side,

  57. a great crowd gathered about him, and he was beside the sea.

  58. Then came one of the rulers of the synagogue, Jairus by name,

  59. and seeing him, he fell at his feet and implored him earnestly, saying,

  60. My little daughter is at the point of death.

  61. Come and lay your hands on her so that she may be made well and live.

  62. And he went with him.

  63. And a great crowd followed him and thronged about him.

  64. And there was a woman who had had a discharge of blood for 12 years

  65. and who had suffered much under many physicians and had spent all that she had

  66. and was no better, but rather grew worse.

  67. She had heard the reports about Jesus and came up behind him in the crowd

  68. and touched his garment.

  69. For she said, If I touch even his garments, I will be made well.

  70. And immediately the flow of blood dried up,

  71. and she felt in her body that she was healed of her disease.

  72. And Jesus, perceiving in himself that power had gone out from him,

  73. immediately turned about in the crowd and said,

  74. Who touched my garments?

  75. And his disciples said to him,

  76. You see the crowd pressing around you, and yet you say, Who touched me?

  77. And he looked around to see who had done it.

  78. But the woman, knowing what had happened to her,

  79. came in fear and trembling,

  80. and fell down before him and told him the whole truth.

  81. And he said to her, Daughter, your faith has made you well.

  82. Go in peace and be healed of your disease.

  83. Verse 35.

  84. While he was still speaking, there came from the ruler's house

  85. some who said, Your daughter is dead.

  86. Why trouble the teacher any further?

  87. But overhearing what they said,

  88. Jesus said to the ruler of the synagogue,

  89. Do not fear, only believe.

  90. And he allowed no one to follow him

  91. except Peter and James and John, the brother of James.

  92. They came to the house of the ruler of the synagogue,

  93. and Jesus saw a commotion, people weeping and wailing loudly.

  94. And when he had entered, he said to them,

  95. Why are you making a commotion and weeping?

  96. The child is not dead, but sleeping.

  97. And they laughed at him.

  98. But he put them all outside and took the child's father and mother

  99. and those who were with him and went in where the child was.

  100. Taking her by the hand, he said to her,

  101. Talitha kumi, which means little girl, I say to you, arise.

  102. And immediately the girl got up and began walking,

  103. for she was 12 years of age,

  104. and they were immediately overcome with amazement.

  105. And he strictly charged them that no one should know this

  106. and told them to give her something to eat.

  107. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  108. Our Father in heaven, we praise you again,

  109. that you speak to us, that you haven't abandoned us,

  110. but instead you instruct us.

  111. We ask that you would remind us of the miracle that this is,

  112. the love that it shows from you.

  113. And we ask for your help this morning,

  114. that you would help us to focus and attend to your word.

  115. Lord, you would help us to hear and to understand,

  116. that you would challenge us,

  117. that you'd encourage us,

  118. that you'd show us Jesus,

  119. that you'd grow our love and our affection for him.

  120. You'd grow our reverence and our all of him,

  121. that we would look to him and see him more and more.

  122. And we ask these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

  123. Amen.

  124. Amen.

  125. We see at the beginning of this story,

  126. we are back to the area of Capernaum,

  127. which means we finished our little incursion

  128. over into Gentile territory,

  129. which we saw last week.

  130. And in verse 21, we see again,

  131. we're beside the sea,

  132. which is this setting that we've become familiar with.

  133. It seems to be a common location for Jesus.

  134. Perhaps he's using the sea again as this natural sound system

  135. where he's able to speak out and be heard by a large crowd.

  136. And we find here as he comes,

  137. verse 22,

  138. one of the rulers of the synagogue comes up to Jesus.

  139. Now, this should be probably the ruler of the same synagogue

  140. we saw Jesus preaching at in Capernaum earlier

  141. in the Gospel of Mark,

  142. but this is an unlikely candidate.

  143. And so there's a sense in which we should be surprised,

  144. and there's a sense in which this is to be expected.

  145. We should be surprised on the one hand

  146. that this is the ruler of the synagogue.

  147. The Jewish leaders, as we've seen,

  148. are not exactly on Jesus' side.

  149. In fact, Jesus presents something of a threat

  150. to their power and their identity.

  151. So that's the surprise.

  152. On the other hand,

  153. this is completely to be expected for this reason.

  154. Desperation is a great motivator.

  155. Desperation is a great equalizer.

  156. This man's daughter is at death.

  157. When you're in dire need,

  158. it matters less and less who's on your side.

  159. It matters more and more who can help.

  160. And so in that sense,

  161. it's exactly what we would be expecting,

  162. that this man would run to Jesus.

  163. We know that need and desperation

  164. levels the playing field.

  165. There are those who would come to Jesus

  166. only where they're in these extreme dire straits.

  167. And so we're in this unusual situation

  168. in this ruler of the synagogues

  169. coming up to Jesus.

  170. And by my count,

  171. as we look back over the gospel of Mark

  172. that we've seen so far,

  173. there are six people that Jesus has either healed

  174. or cast a demon out of.

  175. Now I'm wondering if you can name

  176. any of those six people,

  177. if you remember from the previous weeks.

  178. You can't because we weren't told their names.

  179. Not a single one of them.

  180. Last week, we found out the name of the demon

  181. was Legion.

  182. That's the name of the demon,

  183. not the man who was cured.

  184. We have no idea what his name is.

  185. And when we see a pattern break

  186. as we're reading a story in the Bible,

  187. that should raise our attention.

  188. We should ask ourselves,

  189. why is this detail suddenly changing?

  190. We didn't need to know the name

  191. of the six people who came before

  192. from the very beginning of the gospel.

  193. Suddenly, it's important that we know

  194. that this guy's name is Jairus.

  195. I'm gonna answer that in a bit.

  196. I want you to hold that question in your mind.

  197. Before we answer that question,

  198. we have to understand the distinction

  199. between clean and unclean

  200. because it's an important factor in this story.

  201. Now there's many terrible things

  202. that have come out of COVID

  203. over the last two years.

  204. There's one good thing that's come out

  205. for preachers and it's this.

  206. It is easier than ever before

  207. to explain the purity laws

  208. from the Old Testament.

  209. And so as we go here,

  210. I'm gonna talk in terms of COVID

  211. so you understand what we're dealing with.

  212. And as I talk about this,

  213. I know everyone's got their political opinions

  214. about COVID, okay?

  215. Whether you have opinions about masks or no mask,

  216. whether it's serious or not serious,

  217. whether you'd have a vaccine or not have a vaccine,

  218. just please put all of that to the side.

  219. That's not what we're talking about.

  220. I'm just using this.

  221. I'm not taking sides.

  222. I'm just using it as an illustration

  223. so we understand what's going on in the passage.

  224. So just track with me, okay?

  225. If you have COVID or you've been exposed to COVID,

  226. especially if you have it,

  227. there is a sense in which you are unclean.

  228. And there's three things you need to know

  229. if you're unclean.

  230. One, you can make other people unclean.

  231. So what happens if you're around someone

  232. who later is tested positive for COVID?

  233. Well, if you were less than six feet

  234. and you interacted for a certain amount of time,

  235. maybe if you gave them a hug,

  236. you're now considered exposed,

  237. which means you are now unclean.

  238. So unclean people can make other people unclean.

  239. Principle two, there's a separation.

  240. Once you're unclean,

  241. you're supposed to remove yourself from other people

  242. so you don't infect them as well.

  243. If you have COVID, you're supposed to quarantine.

  244. It's less true now, but if you were exposed,

  245. you were also supposed to quarantine

  246. for a certain amount of time

  247. to make sure you didn't make anyone else sick.

  248. So you can make other people unclean.

  249. You have to quarantine or separate yourself.

  250. And then there's a third element to cleanliness laws,

  251. and that is there's a way to purify yourself.

  252. There's a process by which you can make yourself clean.

  253. We know that process is twofold.

  254. Either you get your negative test,

  255. so you can prove to everyone you're clean once again,

  256. or you quarantine for a certain amount of time, right?

  257. That's your process to know

  258. that you have finished your time of uncleanness.

  259. You're pure now.

  260. You're no longer going to infect other people.

  261. So we've sort of lived this reality

  262. for the last couple of years

  263. where it's intuitive for us

  264. in a way it would not have been, say, back in 2019.

  265. In the Old Testament, it wasn't necessarily COVID, obviously,

  266. but there were all sorts of things

  267. that could make you unclean.

  268. And if you became unclean,

  269. you had the potential, just like we've talked about,

  270. to make other people unclean.

  271. There was this factor of separating yourself

  272. from the community for a while.

  273. There was a process of making yourself clean again.

  274. In fact, that's what we read about,

  275. John read for us in Leviticus chapter 15.

    Leviticus 15 chapter mention

  276. And the purpose of this in the Old Testament

  277. was for it to be this object lesson

  278. that taught people about how holy God was.

  279. It was meant to be this daily practice

  280. that reminded God's people

  281. of the seriousness of moral purity.

  282. So it's a physical lesson about a spiritual reality.

  283. There were also some real health concerns

  284. that went along with the purity laws.

  285. So they're practical things

  286. that were meant to prevent sickness

  287. from spreading among the Old Testament community.

  288. It's with that background

  289. that we come to verses 25 and 26.

  290. So I want you to jump back in the story with me.

  291. We've met this man, Jairus,

  292. who's the ruler of the synagogue.

  293. Now we meet this other individual, this woman.

  294. We find out she's had a discharge of blood for 12 years,

  295. which is another way of saying

  296. she has been unclean for 12 years straight.

  297. There's been 12 years of her saying,

  298. don't come over to the house.

  299. I don't want to make you unclean.

  300. There's been 12 years of her being a social pariah.

  301. There have been 12 years of this woman being isolated.

  302. And we're told here she's penniless

  303. because she spent all her money on doctors.

  304. She is close to hopeless.

  305. I mean, imagine if you were some,

  306. I mean, you can think, right?

  307. If you were someone who was quarantined for a while,

  308. how hard it was to be isolated

  309. for maybe 10 to 14 days.

  310. Here's a woman who's been isolated,

  311. not for 10 to 14 days, but for 12 years.

  312. Even more than that,

  313. she has the hopelessness that's come

  314. from going to doctor after doctor after doctor

  315. and not being able to find a cure.

  316. We find out here, I believe it's verse 26,

  317. that she spent all the money

  318. that she has on these doctors.

  319. And so she has nothing left.

  320. It's in that context then

  321. that we are going to compare both of these characters.

  322. Remember, we're not reading this as two stories.

  323. We're reading it as one story.

  324. The purpose of Mark and Jesus here

  325. is for us to take this man, Jairus, and this woman

  326. and to put them side by side,

  327. to see them in that split screen.

  328. And of course, as we look at them,

  329. we see there's major differences between them.

  330. First, on the one hand,

  331. you have this prominent man and this unknown woman.

  332. You have a man who is confident

  333. and has no problem coming out in public

  334. and declaring before a great crowd to Jesus his need.

  335. On the other hand,

  336. you have this woman who is filled with shame

  337. and wants to stay anonymous.

  338. He is a ruler of the synagogue.

  339. He's on the inside track

  340. of those who are powerful and influential.

  341. She is on the outside.

  342. She's been separated and isolated for 12 years.

  343. He leads the religious community.

  344. She's unclean in the religious community.

  345. He is known and respected by the world.

  346. She is not.

  347. There's one more important difference.

  348. We know his name.

  349. We don't know hers.

  350. He is a person of note and power

  351. and influence in the community.

  352. She is a nobody.

  353. That's what we need to keep in mind

  354. as we come here to verses 30 and 34.

  355. Because she comes up,

  356. she's sneaking up behind Jesus,

  357. hoping to remain anonymous,

  358. hoping not to be seen.

  359. And it's the midst of that

  360. that Jesus decides to completely stop

  361. this great crowd that's following him.

  362. Verse 30,

  363. Jesus perceiving in himself

  364. that power had gone out from him

  365. immediately turned about in the crowd

  366. and said,

  367. who touched my garments?

  368. Disciples think he's crazy here.

  369. Verse 31,

  370. they're asking him

  371. why he would be asking this question

  372. when he has this great crowd

  373. pressing in all around him.

  374. But Jesus won't let go of it

  375. until this woman comes forward

  376. and confesses that she is the one

  377. who has come to be healed by Jesus.

  378. It is during this stop

  379. that Jairus' daughter dies.

  380. Okay?

  381. Look at verse 35.

  382. While he was still speaking.

  383. In other words,

  384. Jesus is talking.

  385. There came from the rulers

  386. how some who said,

  387. your daughter is dead.

  388. Why trouble the teacher any further?

  389. Think for a minute

  390. about what's probably going through

  391. the minds of the crowd in Jairus.

  392. Jesus had an urgent situation

  393. where someone was on the brink of death

  394. and instead of making it in time,

  395. he needed to stop and chat for a little bit.

  396. In fact, had he not,

  397. maybe he could have made it

  398. to this house in time.

  399. If Jesus could just figure out his priorities

  400. and have the right sense of urgency,

  401. perhaps this child would not have died.

  402. Jesus pauses his work

  403. with a powerful man

  404. to stop and help

  405. a powerless, penniless woman.

  406. Jesus pauses his work

  407. with a powerful man

  408. to stop and help

  409. a powerless, penniless woman.

  410. Jesus pauses something

  411. that's incredibly urgent

  412. to deal with something

  413. that is not urgent.

  414. The point is this.

  415. Jesus does not give

  416. preferential treatment

  417. to the rich

  418. or the powerful.

  419. Jesus does not give

  420. preferential treatment

  421. to the rich

  422. and the powerful.

  423. you may have

  424. standing in this world.

  425. It does not give you

  426. standing with Jesus.

  427. Jesus does not choose

  428. the young

  429. over the old.

  430. He does not choose

  431. officers

  432. over the enlisted.

  433. Jesus does not choose

  434. people with a college degree

  435. over those

  436. who only have a GED.

  437. Jesus does not choose

  438. the rich

  439. over the poor.

  440. He does not choose

  441. those who are beautiful

  442. over those who are

  443. average

  444. or unattractive.

  445. Jesus doesn't prefer

  446. people whose names

  447. are known.

  448. And Jesus does not

  449. despise people

  450. whose names

  451. are unknown.

  452. Jesus does not prefer

  453. people who live

  454. in the Broadmoor

  455. over people who live

  456. in Fountain.

  457. Jesus does not operate

  458. according to the values

  459. and hierarchies

  460. of this world.

  461. And he gives us

  462. both of these characters

  463. side by side

  464. to drive that point

  465. home for us.

  466. As we come

  467. to the scriptures

  468. we want to look

  469. always for encouragement

  470. and challenge

  471. that God's word

  472. would stir us up

  473. and it would convict us.

  474. Our encouragement

  475. here is this

  476. you may be nameless

  477. to the world

  478. you are not nameless

  479. to Jesus.

  480. You may be nameless

  481. to the world

  482. you are not nameless

  483. to Jesus.

  484. You may be nobody

  485. to those around you.

  486. That doesn't make you

  487. worth any less

  488. in Jesus' eyes.

  489. James chapter 2

    James 2 chapter mention

  490. James tells us

  491. about this natural

  492. tendency among humans

  493. to treat the rich

  494. better than the poor.

  495. And he warns the church

  496. not to give in

  497. to this temptation.

  498. Jesus does not respect

  499. the things that this world

  500. loves and values.

  501. our challenge

  502. is this

  503. many people

  504. may be impressed

  505. with you

  506. Jesus

  507. is not.

  508. Many people

  509. may be impressed

  510. with you

  511. Jesus is not.

  512. Jesus does not care

  513. if you're the ruler

  514. of the synagogue.

  515. He does not care

  516. if other people

  517. know your name.

  518. He doesn't care

  519. if you have power

  520. and influence

  521. in a religious community.

  522. That does not

  523. get this man

  524. any sort

  525. of preferential

  526. treatment.

  527. If you've been

  528. to the airport

  529. of course you know

  530. when you line up

  531. there's two different lines.

  532. There's the regular line

  533. for the common people

  534. and you also have

  535. for the elites

  536. the TSA pre-check.

  537. And if you have

  538. TSA pre-check

  539. my understanding

  540. is I have not

  541. reached this level

  542. of influence yet

  543. but my understanding

  544. is you do not

  545. have to take off

  546. your shoes.

  547. You may not even

  548. have to take

  549. your laptop out.

  550. You get to go

  551. to a shorter line

  552. right?

  553. There's preferences

  554. that you get

  555. there's privileges

  556. that you receive.

  557. Some people

  558. are used to

  559. having a TSA

  560. pre-check

  561. in all the areas

  562. of their life.

  563. People will

  564. show you

  565. deference

  566. they will give

  567. you benefits

  568. and privileges

  569. if you are

  570. powerful enough

  571. beautiful enough

  572. young enough

  573. influential enough

  574. and it's easy

  575. to not even

  576. see it happen.

  577. Jesus doesn't

  578. have a TSA

  579. pre-check

  580. and even

  581. if the rest

  582. of the world

  583. gives you

  584. a shorter line

  585. Jesus

  586. will not.

  587. And so there

  588. are many

  589. powerful people

  590. who are surprised

  591. because they

  592. expect the same.

  593. The world

  594. gives them

  595. preferences

  596. and defers to

  597. them.

  598. They expect

  599. Jesus to do

  600. the same.

  601. And yet 1 Corinthians

    1 Corinthians 1 chapter mention

  602. chapter 1

  603. tells us this

  604. God chose

  605. what is foolish

  606. in the world

  607. to shame

  608. the wise.

  609. God chose

  610. what is weak

  611. in the world

  612. to shame

  613. the strong.

  614. God chose

  615. what is low

  616. and despised

  617. in the world

  618. even things

  619. that are not

  620. to bring

  621. to nothing

  622. things that are

  623. so that no

  624. human being

  625. might boast

  626. in the presence

  627. of God.

  628. The point

  629. is this

  630. others might

  631. be impressed

  632. with you

  633. Jesus isn't.

  634. Others might

  635. overlook you

  636. Jesus doesn't.

  637. Others might

  638. be impressed

  639. with you

  640. Jesus isn't.

  641. Others might

  642. overlook you

  643. Jesus

  644. doesn't.

  645. He doesn't

  646. care that this

  647. man is a ruler

  648. of the synagogue

  649. and he's not

  650. put up by the

  651. fact that this

  652. woman is unclean.

  653. And what we

  654. see here is

  655. this picture

  656. of the gospel

  657. which is that

  658. your merit

  659. is irrelevant.

  660. The clout

  661. and power

  662. and influence

  663. that you have

  664. in this world

  665. means nothing

  666. in the kingdom

  667. of God.

  668. God does not

  669. care how much

  670. money you have

  671. how powerful

  672. you are.

  673. He does not

  674. give you any

  675. sort of special

  676. access.

  677. God does not

  678. operate according

  679. to the standards

  680. of our world

  681. based on what

  682. is urgent

  683. and not urgent.

  684. In his world

  685. he can choose

  686. to heal

  687. bleeding on his

  688. way to raise

  689. someone from

  690. the dead.

  691. Who is

  692. Jesus?

  693. Jesus is the

  694. one who does

  695. not give

  696. preferential

  697. treatment to

  698. the rich

  699. and the

  700. powerful.

  701. Now I've

  702. given you a

  703. list of all

  704. the things

  705. that this man

  706. and woman

  707. are different

  708. in.

  709. There's actually

  710. a lot of

  711. things that

  712. they have

  713. in common.

  714. They're both

  715. very similar.

  716. Both of

  717. them present

  718. situations to

  719. Jesus that

  720. would make

  721. him unclean.

  722. they present

  723. situations that

  724. would contaminate

  725. him.

  726. So verse

  727. 35 we find

  728. out of course

  729. we know that

  730. this woman's

  731. unclean right?

  732. She's been

  733. bleeding.

  734. We read that

  735. section in

  736. Leviticus 15

  737. earlier.

  738. But then verse

  739. 35 we find

  740. out that this

  741. man's daughter

  742. is dead.

  743. In verse

  744. 41 Jesus

  745. touches this

  746. dead body.

  747. You know

  748. what makes

  749. you even

  750. more unclean

  751. perhaps than

  752. touching someone

  753. who's been

  754. bleeding?

  755. Let's try

  756. touching someone

  757. who's dead.

  758. Both of

  759. these situations

  760. present a

  761. threat to

  762. Jesus'

  763. ability as

  764. a Jewish

  765. man to

  766. remain

  767. ceremonially

  768. clean.

  769. And so

  770. Jesus

  771. accomplishes

  772. something.

  773. There's a lot

  774. of reasons I

  775. believe Jesus

  776. stops to

  777. talk with

  778. this woman.

  779. One of

  780. them is

  781. he gives

  782. time for

  783. this little

  784. girl to

  785. die.

  786. Jesus

  787. allows this

  788. situation to

  789. come to a

  790. point where

  791. he's going

  792. to become

  793. as unclean

  794. as possible.

  795. Because in a

  796. sense this

  797. woman and

  798. this man are

  799. much clearer

  800. than they

  801. appear.

  802. Now you

  803. might remember

  804. from our

  805. passage in

  806. Leviticus

    Leviticus 15 chapter mention

  807. chapter 15

  808. that it's

  809. touching that

  810. you need to

  811. be careful

  812. about when

  813. you're dealing

  814. with things

  815. that are

  816. unclean.

  817. And we

  818. see this

  819. theme of

  820. touching

  821. appear over

  822. and over

  823. again in

  824. this passage.

  825. Verse 23

  826. Jairus

  827. comes and

  828. he wants

  829. him to

  830. lay his

  831. hands on

  832. his daughter.

  833. Verse 28

  834. what does

  835. this woman

  836. do?

  837. She says

  838. if I

  839. touch even

  840. his garments

  841. I will

  842. be made

  843. well.

  844. Verse 30

  845. there's this

  846. hope.

  847. Jesus says

  848. who touched

  849. my garments?

  850. What does

  851. he do with

  852. this dead

  853. girl?

  854. He takes

  855. her by

  856. the hand

  857. he touches

  858. her.

  859. Jesus

  860. chooses a

  861. variety of

  862. different ways

  863. to heal

  864. people throughout

  865. the gospels.

  866. He does

  867. not always

  868. have to do

  869. it simply

  870. by touching

  871. them.

  872. Here he

  873. does to

  874. highlight

  875. and underscore

  876. that he's

  877. doing exactly

  878. the opposite

  879. of what you

  880. want to do

  881. to remain

  882. ceremonially

  883. pure and

  884. clean.

  885. Jesus is

  886. putting himself

  887. in the exact

  888. situation

  889. where he

  890. is going

  891. to become

  892. the unclean

  893. one who

  894. has to

  895. separate

  896. himself

  897. from others.

  898. Except there's

  899. something that's

  900. different about

  901. Jesus

  902. than everyone

  903. else.

  904. we know

  905. this going

  906. back to

  907. talking about

  908. COVID.

  909. Being exposed

  910. to a sick

  911. person hurts

  912. you.

  913. Right?

  914. Being exposed

  915. to a sick

  916. person makes

  917. you exposed.

  918. However,

  919. the opposite

  920. is not

  921. true.

  922. Being exposed

  923. to a healthy

  924. person doesn't

  925. help you.

  926. So if you're

  927. exposed to

  928. COVID,

  929. you don't

  930. then find

  931. someone who's

  932. not infected

  933. with COVID

  934. and stay

  935. within them

  936. for six feet

  937. for more

  938. than 15

  939. minutes and

  940. then suddenly

  941. you're healed.

  942. Right?

  943. It only works

  944. one way.

  945. You can infect

  946. other people

  947. with your

  948. presence.

  949. You cannot

  950. heal them

  951. with your

  952. presence.

  953. Exposure

  954. is a one

  955. way street

  956. except

  957. for Jesus.

  958. Jesus here

  959. is demonstrating

  960. both by his

  961. touching of

  962. this woman

  963. and this

  964. dead body

  965. that his

  966. cleanliness

  967. operates in a

  968. way that is

  969. not true for

  970. anyone else

  971. in this world.

  972. Most people

  973. would become

  974. unclean

  975. by being

  976. touched.

  977. Jesus touches

  978. and the

  979. opposite happens.

  980. He in

  981. fact makes

  982. these people

  983. clean.

  984. Jesus is

  985. able by

  986. his presence

  987. to reverse

  988. the impurity

  989. and the

  990. infection.

  991. Jesus is

  992. able to

  993. come and

  994. touch things

  995. that other

  996. people want

  997. to avoid

  998. and stay

  999. far away

  1000. from.

  1001. Jesus is

  1002. able to

  1003. be less

  1004. than six

  1005. feet and

  1006. resolve

  1007. the situation.

  1008. In other

  1009. words,

  1010. Jesus is

  1011. not just

  1012. the one

  1013. who doesn't

  1014. give preferential

  1015. treatment to

  1016. the rich

  1017. and the

  1018. powerful.

  1019. Jesus is

  1020. also the

  1021. one and

  1022. the only

  1023. one who

  1024. is able

  1025. to make

  1026. unclean

  1027. things

  1028. clean.

  1029. Jesus is

  1030. the one

  1031. and the

  1032. only one

  1033. who is

  1034. able to

  1035. come and

  1036. bring real

  1037. and full

  1038. and ultimate

  1039. healing.

  1040. If you

  1041. turn with

  1042. me,

  1043. you look

  1044. page seven

  1045. of your

  1046. worship guide.

  1047. We have

  1048. this long

  1049. quote about

  1050. the Old

  1051. Testament

  1052. system,

  1053. but I

  1054. want you

  1055. to look

  1056. just at

  1057. the last

  1058. sentence.

  1059. When

  1060. Jesus,

  1061. the clean

  1062. one,

  1063. touched

  1064. an unclean

  1065. sinner,

  1066. Christ did

  1067. not become

  1068. unclean.

  1069. The sinner

  1070. became

  1071. clean.

  1072. Jesus has

  1073. a power

  1074. that no

  1075. one else

  1076. in this

  1077. world

  1078. does.

  1079. Jesus is

  1080. the only

  1081. one who

  1082. can change

  1083. you and

  1084. clean you.

  1085. Jesus is

  1086. the only

  1087. one who

  1088. can change

  1089. you and

  1090. clean you.

  1091. Remember that

  1092. these purity

  1093. laws are meant

  1094. to be an

  1095. illustration of

  1096. our spiritual

  1097. lives.

  1098. Jesus cleans

  1099. these people

  1100. physically.

  1101. He's the

  1102. only one who

  1103. can do that

  1104. spiritually.

  1105. Jesus is

  1106. the only one

  1107. who can

  1108. actually make

  1109. you pure and

  1110. able to stand

  1111. before God.

  1112. Jesus is the

  1113. only one who's

  1114. able to remove

  1115. the spots and

  1116. stains of our

  1117. sin.

  1118. Jesus is the

  1119. only one who's

  1120. able to come

  1121. and bring us

  1122. real, life

  1123. transforming,

  1124. heart changing,

  1125. alteration to

  1126. our lives.

  1127. Jesus is the

  1128. one who's able

  1129. to empower us

  1130. to make a

  1131. 180 degree

  1132. turn.

  1133. Jesus doesn't

  1134. prefer people.

  1135. Jesus makes

  1136. the unclean

  1137. clean.

  1138. That's who

  1139. Jesus is.

  1140. How do we

  1141. respond to

  1142. him?

  1143. I mentioned

  1144. before that

  1145. desperation

  1146. is an

  1147. equalizer

  1148. and desperation

  1149. is a

  1150. motivator.

  1151. There are

  1152. some things

  1153. you wouldn't

  1154. imagine doing

  1155. unless you're

  1156. desperate

  1157. enough.

  1158. Jairus

  1159. probably didn't

  1160. imagine that he

  1161. was going to

  1162. come begging

  1163. Jesus for

  1164. help.

  1165. And this

  1166. woman probably

  1167. didn't imagine

  1168. that she was

  1169. going to go

  1170. out in a

  1171. crowd in the

  1172. midst of her

  1173. uncleanness,

  1174. chase Jesus

  1175. down secretly

  1176. from behind

  1177. and touch

  1178. his cloak.

  1179. And Jairus'

  1180. need was

  1181. great enough.

  1182. This woman's

  1183. need was

  1184. great enough.

  1185. There is a

  1186. sense,

  1187. brothers and

  1188. sisters,

  1189. in which God

  1190. can only work

  1191. with us as

  1192. we give up

  1193. control.

  1194. There is a

  1195. sense in which

  1196. God can only

  1197. work with us

  1198. as and when

  1199. we give up

  1200. control,

  1201. as and when

  1202. we are

  1203. powerlessness,

  1204. we are

  1205. powerless.

  1206. Desperation

  1207. made this

  1208. powerful man

  1209. come to

  1210. Jesus.

  1211. Desperation

  1212. made this

  1213. powerless woman

  1214. chase down

  1215. Jesus.

  1216. Jesus'

  1217. work with

  1218. us does

  1219. not happen

  1220. within our

  1221. comfort zones.

  1222. God

  1223. says,

  1224. it is hard

  1225. if not

  1226. impossible

  1227. to be in

  1228. control

  1229. and for

  1230. God to be

  1231. at work

  1232. in your

  1233. life.

  1234. It is

  1235. hard if not

  1236. impossible

  1237. to be in

  1238. control

  1239. and for

  1240. God to be

  1241. at work

  1242. in your

  1243. life.

  1244. And of course

  1245. that's what's

  1246. happening here.

  1247. Verse 23,

  1248. this man's

  1249. daughter is

  1250. at the

  1251. point of

  1252. death.

  1253. And there's

  1254. few things

  1255. you won't

  1256. do to

  1257. save your

  1258. children.

  1259. Verses 25

  1260. and 26,

  1261. there are

  1262. very few

  1263. things that

  1264. make you

  1265. crazier

  1266. than searching

  1267. for a cure

  1268. to a chronic

  1269. illness.

  1270. we come

  1271. to Jesus

  1272. with our

  1273. powerlessness.

  1274. And I'm

  1275. going to be

  1276. really blunt

  1277. here.

  1278. If you're

  1279. not willing

  1280. to be

  1281. needy,

  1282. if you

  1283. don't

  1284. recognize

  1285. your need,

  1286. Jesus

  1287. isn't for

  1288. you.

  1289. If you're

  1290. not willing

  1291. to be

  1292. needy,

  1293. if you

  1294. don't

  1295. recognize

  1296. your need,

  1297. Jesus

  1298. is not

  1299. for you.

  1300. need not

  1301. just for

  1302. the situations

  1303. outside of

  1304. you,

  1305. need for

  1306. the situation

  1307. inside of

  1308. you.

  1309. If you

  1310. say that

  1311. you are a

  1312. Christian,

  1313. need is

  1314. part of

  1315. the package.

  1316. Remember

  1317. what I

  1318. told you

  1319. very first

  1320. sermon,

  1321. chapter 1

  1322. verses 1

  1323. through 8.

  1324. If you

  1325. want to

  1326. take the

  1327. journey of

  1328. Mark,

  1329. you have

  1330. to admit

  1331. real need.

  1332. That is

  1333. the price

  1334. of

  1335. admission.

  1336. I also

  1337. told you

  1338. we are

  1339. not

  1340. here for

  1341. an

  1342. intellectual

  1343. exercise.

  1344. We are

  1345. not here

  1346. to have

  1347. profound

  1348. insights.

  1349. As we

  1350. look at

  1351. the gospel

  1352. of Mark,

  1353. we are

  1354. here to

  1355. be saved.

  1356. We are

  1357. here to

  1358. come and

  1359. bring our

  1360. need to

  1361. Jesus.

  1362. Mark

    Mark 2:17

  1363. chapter 2

  1364. verse 17,

  1365. And when

  1366. Jesus heard

  1367. it,

  1368. he said

  1369. to them,

  1370. those who

  1371. are well

  1372. have no

  1373. need of

  1374. a physician

  1375. but those

  1376. who are

  1377. sick.

  1378. I came

  1379. not to

  1380. call the

  1381. righteous

  1382. but sinners.

  1383. If you

  1384. want the

  1385. gospel to

  1386. be alive

  1387. for you,

  1388. this is

  1389. the secret.

  1390. If you

  1391. find the

  1392. gospel boring,

  1393. this is

  1394. why.

  1395. If you

  1396. want the

  1397. gospel to

  1398. be alive

  1399. for you,

  1400. this is

  1401. the secret.

  1402. If you

  1403. find the

  1404. gospel boring,

  1405. this is

  1406. why.

  1407. Jesus

  1408. could have

  1409. spoken to

  1410. this woman

  1411. in a

  1412. monotone.

  1413. And as

  1414. he spoke

  1415. to her

  1416. in a

  1417. monotone,

  1418. Jesus

  1419. could have

  1420. been reading

  1421. to her

  1422. the ingredients

  1423. off the

  1424. back of

  1425. a Wheaties

  1426. box.

  1427. And I

  1428. guarantee

  1429. you she

  1430. would not

  1431. have found

  1432. him boring

  1433. because her

  1434. need was

  1435. so great.

  1436. Jesus

  1437. was her

  1438. answer,

  1439. her

  1440. solution.

  1441. If we

  1442. want to

  1443. have joy

  1444. in the

  1445. gospel,

  1446. if we

  1447. want it

  1448. to be

  1449. alive to

  1450. us,

  1451. if we

  1452. want to

  1453. escape it

  1454. being something

  1455. rote that

  1456. we've heard

  1457. many times

  1458. before,

  1459. there's an

  1460. answer,

  1461. there's one

  1462. answer.

  1463. We need

  1464. to know,

  1465. like this

  1466. woman,

  1467. that Jesus

  1468. is the

  1469. one who's

  1470. able to

  1471. make us

  1472. clean.

  1473. We have

  1474. to know

  1475. our need.

  1476. If you

  1477. know your

  1478. need,

  1479. need,

  1480. the gospel

  1481. is not

  1482. boring.

  1483. Jesus

  1484. is not

  1485. stale.

  1486. Neediness

  1487. is the

  1488. price of

  1489. admission.

  1490. How do we

  1491. respond to

  1492. Jesus then?

  1493. We come

  1494. to him

  1495. with our

  1496. desperation.

  1497. We come

  1498. to him

  1499. with our

  1500. powerlessness.

  1501. It's not

  1502. simply need,

  1503. though,

  1504. that these

  1505. characters show

  1506. us.

  1507. need.

  1508. They also

  1509. have faith.

  1510. It's one

  1511. thing to

  1512. have need.

  1513. It's another

  1514. thing to

  1515. bring that

  1516. need to

  1517. Jesus,

  1518. believing he

  1519. can do

  1520. something with

  1521. it.

  1522. That's the

  1523. other thing

  1524. that these

  1525. characters have

  1526. in common.

  1527. It's not

  1528. just that

  1529. they're in

  1530. these powerless

  1531. situations,

  1532. but it's also

  1533. that they

  1534. believe Jesus

  1535. can do it

  1536. and they

  1537. come to

  1538. him for

  1539. it.

  1540. Verse 28,

  1541. If I touch

  1542. even his

  1543. garments,

  1544. I will be

  1545. made well.

  1546. Verse 34,

  1547. Daughter,

  1548. your faith

  1549. has made

  1550. you well.

  1551. Verse 36,

  1552. What does

  1553. he say to

  1554. Jairus?

  1555. Do not

  1556. fear,

  1557. only believe.

  1558. Having need

  1559. is the first

  1560. part.

  1561. Coming with

  1562. confidence to

  1563. Jesus is the

  1564. second part.

  1565. That's part of

  1566. what we do

  1567. every week

  1568. when we gather

  1569. together as a

  1570. congregation,

  1571. and John or

  1572. whichever elder

  1573. it is,

  1574. comes up and

  1575. gives the

  1576. congregational

  1577. prayer.

  1578. We are not

  1579. simply doing

  1580. that as some

  1581. sort of

  1582. religious exercise.

  1583. What we are

  1584. doing is saying

  1585. we as a

  1586. congregation are

  1587. incredibly needy.

  1588. Here's the

  1589. places and the

  1590. ways in which

  1591. we're needy,

  1592. and we have

  1593. faith that God

  1594. cares enough and

  1595. he's powerful

  1596. enough to do

  1597. something about

  1598. it.

  1599. And so we

  1600. come week after

  1601. week together

  1602. as a church on

  1603. Sunday morning to

  1604. do this very

  1605. thing together.

  1606. We do it as

  1607. a community

  1608. throughout the

  1609. week as you

  1610. share your

  1611. needs with one

  1612. another and with

  1613. God in prayer.

  1614. This is part of

1615. what we do as we

  1616. walk as a church

  1617. following Jesus

  1618. together.

  1619. We're admitting

  1620. our need to

  1621. Jesus and each

  1622. other on the one

  1623. hand.

  1624. We're believing

  1625. in faith on the

  1626. other hand that

  1627. God cares and

  1628. he's powerful.

  1629. We know our

  1630. need.

  1631. We bring our

  1632. need.

  1633. I mentioned

  1634. earlier that

  1635. there's a lot

  1636. of different

  1637. ways that you

  1638. can become

  1639. unclean.

  1640. Perhaps the

  1641. best way to

  1642. become unclean

  1643. is death.

  1644. Jesus risks

  1645. his cleanliness

  1646. by coming to

  1647. the dead body

  1648. of this girl.

  1649. He gives us

  1650. a hint,

  1651. a picture

  1652. of what's to

  1653. come later in

  1654. the Gospel of

  1655. Mark.

1656. because Jesus is not just going to go into a room

1657. and touch a little girl by the hand.

1658. Jesus is in fact going to go all the way to the cross.

1659. And he's able to make the dead live

  1660. by himself experiencing death.

1661. Jesus is able to make the unclean clean

  1662. by himself becoming unclean.

1663. Jesus brings the power here that comes from the cross,

1664. the power that he has as he stands

1665. and takes God's punishment for us,

1666. as he takes our uncleanness for us,

1667. as he takes our death for us so that we can live.

1668. This is not just a good story about Jesus.

1669. It is a story that points us forward

1670. to what Jesus is going to do fully and finally.

1671. Speaking of this story with a little girl,

  1672. one man says this,

1673. Later on Calvary, Jesus would share again in death.

1674. This time it was our death.

1675. He would become unclean for our sake

1676. and bear God's judgment against our sin.

1677. In a sense, what he was doing here

1678. was but a preview of what he would do then.

1679. It was also a preview of what he will do

1680. at the end of time when he will take us by the hand

  1681. and say, arise.

1682. That will not be in secret but in public.

1683. Every eye will see him.

1684. Even those who mocked him that day will see him and mourn,

  1685. this time for themselves.

  1686. Who is Jesus?

1687. Jesus is the one who doesn't show special treatment

1688. to the rich and the powerful.

1689. Jesus is the one who takes unclean people

  1690. and makes them clean.

1691. How do we respond to him?

  1692. We admit our need.

1693. We bring Jesus our need.

1694. And we believe that Jesus meets our needs.

  1695. Verse 34.

1696. And he said to her,

1697. daughter, your faith has made you well.

1698. Go in peace and be healed of your disease.

  1699. Let's pray.

  1700. Our Father in heaven,

1701. we thank you for your mercy and your compassion on us.

1702. That you're not just powerful,

  1703. but you're also good.

1704. And you use that goodness to heal and cleanse us.

1705. We ask that you'd be at work in our lives,

  1706. in our hearts,

1707. that you'd be moving us in humility to come to you,

1708. admitting our need to you and to one another.

1709. And that we would have the faith to come to you

1710. for the healing and the cleansing that you offer.

1711. We ask all these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

  1712. Amen.
