  1. Good morning. My name is Matthew Capone and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church.

  2. And it's my joy to bring God's word to you today. A special welcome if you're new or visiting with us.

  3. We're glad that you're here and we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats,

  4. but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  5. And as we follow him together, we become convinced that there's no one so good.

  6. They don't need God's grace and no one so bad they can't have it,

  7. which is why we gather week after week to hear what God has to say to us in his word.

  8. We're continuing our series in the Gospel of Mark.

  9. We're also still in Mark chapter 6.

    Mark 6 chapter mention

  10. And you'll remember that the Gospels tell the story of Jesus in his life and his death and his resurrection.

  11. And the two questions that we've been asking in this book are,

  12. one, who is Jesus? And two, how do we respond to him?

  13. So I'll invite you to go ahead and turn there with me now to Mark chapter 6.

    Mark 6 chapter mention

  14. I want to mention first, though, that I had a very successful trip to Costco on Friday.

  15. And there's only a few things that I buy at Costco that are extremely well-priced.

  16. And one of them are these Perfect Bars, which is a refrigerated protein bar.

  17. And they're a little bit expensive, but they're on coupon right now.

  18. And they will be through April 3rd.

  19. So you heard it here.

  20. So I got five of them and I stuck them in my freezer.

  21. And if you look on the bar, there's this circle.

  22. There's a lot of different labels on it, but there's this circle and it says,

  23. a low and then under it, GI.

  24. Low GI.

  25. And some of you watch your blood sugar carefully.

  26. And so you know what that means.

  27. It means it has a low glycemic index.

  28. The glycemic index is a way of telling us which foods burn fast

  29. and which foods burn slow.

  30. And if something burns fast, maybe it has a lot of sugar in it,

  31. it'll give you a quick spike and then it'll give you a quick crash.

  32. If it has that low GI, you know that's what you want.

  33. It's not going to digest quickly.

  34. It's going to be something that's going to give you energy over the long haul.

  35. It's going to keep, as I think my dad would say, it'll stick to your insides.

  36. Maybe that was my mom.

  37. I forget now.

  38. But as we come to this passage, that's the question that I want us to ask together.

  39. What is our fuel?

  40. What is our power as we move forward in the Christian life?

  41. As we do the things that God has called us to do, especially as we talk about and share the gospel.

  42. That's what we're going to see from the disciples in this passage.

  43. Jesus, remember back in chapter 3, told them they were going to be with him

  44. and he was going to send them out.

  45. And he finally does it in this passage.

  46. Their motivation, the things that power them are what we want to look at

  47. because there's a variety of different fuels that we can use in the Christian life.

  48. I could try to motivate you this morning with shame or guilt.

  49. And that would probably work for a little bit.

  50. That would be a high GI plan.

  51. It might get you to do something fast.

  52. Maybe it would give you a hit of that shame or that guilt,

  53. but it would also lead to a quick crash.

  54. That is not what's going to carry us forward week after week, year after year in the Christian life.

  55. We don't rely.

  56. We don't want to look to shame and guilt.

  57. In fact, quite the opposite, we look to Jesus to remove our shame and guilt.

  58. And so we need God to provide something else for us as our fuel,

  59. something to keep us going as we follow after him together, loving and serving Jesus.

  60. And so the question then is, what is the low GI power and fuel in the Christian life?

  61. What is going to keep us burning for a long time?

  62. What allows these apostles to go forward doing what Jesus has commanded them?

  63. It's with that question that we're going to turn together to Mark chapter 6, starting at verse 7.

    Mark 6 chapter mention

  64. You can turn with me in your worship guide.

  65. You can turn in your Bible.

  66. You can turn on your phone.

  67. No matter where you turn, remember that this is God's word.

  68. And God tells us that his word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path,

  69. which means that God has not left us to stumble alone in the dark,

  70. but instead he's given us his word to show us the way to go.

  71. And so that's why we read now, starting at verse 7.

  72. And he called the twelve and began to send them out two by two.

  73. And he gave them authority over the unclean spirits.

  74. He charged them to take nothing for their journey except a staff,

  75. no bread, no bag, no money in their belts,

  76. but to wear sandals and not put on two tunics.

  77. And he said to them,

  78. Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you depart from there.

  79. And if any place will not receive you and they will not listen to you when you leave,

  80. shake off the dust that is on your feet as a testimony against them.

  81. So they went out and proclaimed that the people should repent.

  82. And they cast out many demons and anointed with oil many who were sick and healed them.

  83. And I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  84. Our Father in heaven, we freely admit and confess this morning

  85. that we are not able to understand your words without your help.

  86. And so we ask for that.

  87. We ask that you would speak to us in ways that we can understand,

  88. that you'd honor your promise in Isaiah 55,

  89. that your word will accomplish what you've sent it for,

  90. that you'd honor your promise in 1 Corinthians 2,

  91. that the Holy Spirit will help us to understand these spiritual things.

  92. We ask for that help.

  93. We're helpless without it,

  94. that you would open our eyes,

  95. you'd unstop our ears,

  96. you'd soften our hearts,

  97. and you'd clear our minds,

  98. that we would see and hear and believe

  99. and understand everything that you've written for us in your word.

  100. And we ask these things grateful that we don't have to earn them or deserve them,

  101. but instead we ask them in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

  102. Amen.

  103. We start here, chapter 6, verse 7, with a reference to the 12.

  104. It's been a while since we've seen them.

  105. This phrase, the 12, only appears 10 times in the Gospel of Mark,

  106. and the first time we heard it was in chapter 3.

  107. You might remember that Jesus had gone up into a mountain,

  108. he'd called a variety of people to himself,

  109. and he had chosen these 12 to be his especially close group.

  110. We also saw in chapter 3 that they're not just called the 12,

  111. Jesus also called them the apostles.

  112. You may know that this group, the apostles,

  113. were a narrower band that Jesus worked most closely with

  114. during his earthly ministry,

  115. and they had a special role in representing Jesus

  116. after he had returned to heaven.

  117. So we already know that we're working with the insider group

  118. that's around Jesus,

  119. the group he's most focused on discipling and developing.

  120. The first time we saw them was back in chapter 3,

  121. and you'll remember, as I mentioned earlier this morning,

  122. Jesus had two goals for them.

  123. Goal number one is that they would be with him.

  124. Goal number two is that he would be able to send them out,

  125. it says, to preach and to cast out demons.

  126. And so Jesus has kept his word in this situation,

  127. and he's also kept the order.

  128. In other words, it's important that they are with Jesus first

  129. before he sends them out.

  130. And we talked about that in chapter 3,

  131. that it's that relationship with Jesus,

  132. that mentoring and developing that they receive from him

  133. that is critical before and as Jesus sends them out.

  134. And that's what we saw the second time

  135. they were mentioned in chapter 4, verse 10.

  136. It says, and when he was alone,

  137. those around him with the 12, that's the apostles,

  138. asked him about the parables.

  139. That was when Jesus had taught the parable of the sower,

  140. and they needed this explanation to help them understand

  141. what Jesus was actually talking about.

  142. Jesus was working with them, developing them,

  143. mentoring them during this time.

  144. It would certainly have been easy and tempting for him

  145. to pull them in as his help and his assistance,

  146. because Jesus was pressed in from every side.

  147. You might remember at one point he gets on a boat

  148. so that he can save his life.

  149. His family's worried about him, that he's working too much.

  150. And so it would make sense for Jesus

  151. to immediately delegate to these men to help him out.

  152. And yet Jesus does the opposite.

  153. He focuses on his relationship with them

  154. above everything else.

  155. He spends his time teaching and developing them

  156. rather than using them.

  157. Jesus is more interested that these men grow and know him

  158. than he is that they immediately get to work in his mission.

  159. And so it's here in chapter 3,

  160. Jesus has spent three chapters from 3 to 6,

  161. developing them and teaching them

  162. before he gives his apostles the car keys.

  163. It was in chapter 3, verse 15,

  164. that he said he was going to give them authority

  165. to cast out demons.

  166. Here in chapter 6, verse 7, he finally does it.

  167. It tells us he gave them authority over the unclean spirits.

  168. And so again, as I mentioned, Jesus has kept his word,

  169. he's kept his promise, and he's kept the order.

  170. It is critical that they are with Jesus

  171. before he sends them out.

  172. And it's false, by the way,

  173. for us to believe that these are two separate movements.

  174. So I don't want you to go away thinking,

  175. well, there was phase one, the being with Jesus phase,

  176. and then there was the phase two being sent out by Jesus.

  177. No, these are things that are connected together.

  178. There is a relationship between the two.

  179. Jesus is going to send them out here,

  180. and what are they going to do next?

  181. Well, we're going to have this little short story

  182. next time about Herod.

  183. Then they're going to come back.

  184. They're going to come back to be with Jesus again.

  185. As we go on through the Gospel of Mark,

  186. we're going to see that that relationship doesn't end.

  187. In Mark chapter 11,

    Mark 11 chapter mention

  188. as Jesus enters Jerusalem on Palm Sunday,

  189. it notes that he does it with the 12.

  190. As Jesus gathers in Mark chapter 14 to have the Passover,

    Mark 14 chapter mention

  191. we're told he does it with the 12.

  192. Yes, Jesus sends these men out,

  193. and his presence with them never ends.

  194. Jesus doesn't stop being with his apostles.

  195. Jesus doesn't stop being with his people.

  196. Jesus doesn't stop giving himself to those who follow after him.

  197. In fact, we're told in other books of the Bible

  198. that this continues even now.

  199. Jesus is still with us.

  200. Matthew chapter 28,

    Matthew 28 chapter mention

  201. Jesus gives these men his final commission,

  202. the great commission,

  203. telling them to go out and teach people

  204. and baptize them, making disciples.

  205. And what does he tell them at the very end?

  206. Verse 20,

  207. And behold, I am with you always to the end of the age.

  208. I am going to heaven physically.

  209. Spiritually, my presence continues,

  210. and it will continue forever.

  211. Jesus leaves the earth.

  212. He does not leave his people.

  213. Jesus' mission is added to his presence.

  214. Jesus' mission does not replace his presence.

  215. What is our fuel as we go on Jesus' mission?

  216. What is it that keeps us going?

  217. It is first that Jesus is still with us.

  218. Jesus is still with us.

  219. Jesus' promise from Matthew chapter 28 is still true.

    Matthew 28 chapter mention

  220. It continues now.

  221. How do I know?

  222. We have not reached the end of the age.

  223. That's how long the promise lasts.

  224. Okay?

  225. Jesus calls his apostles to be with him.

  226. He does the same for us.

  227. We are not merely or simply cogs in the machine of God's kingdom.

  228. We're his beloved sons and daughters.

  229. Now, as we come to with us language,

  230. it's tempting to stop there.

  231. It's tempting for that to simply be this pie-in-the-sky phrase,

  232. what I've talked before about the temptation of God talk.

  233. And God talk is where we throw these things out

  234. that sound nice and wonderful.

  235. They're sentimental,

  236. and maybe they make us feel good for a moment,

  237. and we have no idea what they mean.

  238. What does it mean on the ground this Wednesday

  239. that God is with you,

  240. that Jesus is with you?

  241. Well, I'm going to give you not necessarily everything,

  242. but a few things that it means.

  243. First of all, John chapter 14,

    John 14 chapter mention

  244. Jesus makes this promise that as he leaves physically,

  245. he's going to do something even better than being here.

  246. He's going to send his spirit to be with his people.

  247. He says,

  248. I'm going to give you the spirit of truth

  249. whom the world cannot receive.

  250. You know him, for he dwells with you and will be in you.

  251. Now, you might ask at this point,

  252. okay, great, the Holy Spirit's going to be with us.

  253. What good does that do for us?

  254. Well, thankfully, Jesus goes on in chapter 14 of John

  255. to tell us practically what that means for these people.

  256. Verses 25 and 26, he says,

  257. the spirit will teach you all things

  258. and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.

  259. How was Peter able to remember everything that he told to Mark

  260. so that Mark could write them down for this gospel in Greek

  261. that was then translated

  262. and we are reading and studying together right now.

  263. Peter was able to remember those things

  264. and tell them to Mark

  265. because Jesus by his spirit was with him.

  266. The Holy Spirit gave Peter practical help

  267. in his mind and his memory

  268. so that he would know the things that Jesus taught

  269. while he was with us on this earth.

  270. Jesus being with us is not a mere sentiment.

  271. It is a real and helpful presence.

  272. Luke chapter 12, we're told something similar.

    Luke 12 chapter mention

  273. Jesus tells his disciples,

  274. don't be afraid when you're called

  275. to appear before rulers and authorities.

  276. Why?

  277. Because the Holy Spirit will teach you

  278. in that very hour what you ought to say.

  279. And so it's not just that Jesus was with Peter

  280. when the apostle Paul in the book of Acts

  281. appears before the rulers of the Roman government

  282. and has to give them a defense.

  283. When he's invited to appear before them

  284. over and over again over the period of years,

  285. when he makes his trip to Rome,

  286. how is it that Paul knows exactly what to say?

  287. It is not because of Paul's many years of education.

  288. It's not because he had the best teachers.

  289. No, Paul is able to stand

  290. and give a defense for the gospel

  291. because Jesus by his spirit is with him.

  292. Jesus' presence is real and powerful.

  293. Jesus is teaching us by his word this morning

  294. and he doesn't leave us alone by ourselves

  295. to figure it out.

  296. I've mentioned it at least twice this morning.

  297. 1 Corinthians 2 tells us that the only reason

  298. and the only way we can understand

  299. what God has for us in his word

  300. is if his spirit comes and helps us.

  301. And so if you are understanding,

  302. if you've ever sat and listened to a sermon

  303. and you had that moment where you heard the word of God

  304. and everything came together for you

  305. and you understood it and you loved it

  306. and you wanted to change,

  307. do you know why that happened?

  308. It did not happen because the preacher was brilliant.

  309. It happened because Jesus was with you

  310. by his spirit,

  311. explaining and helping you comprehend

  312. and understand the things that are in his word.

  313. Okay, maybe the preacher was brilliant.

  314. Why?

  315. Because Jesus was with him.

  316. It is Jesus' presence that makes the difference.

  317. We're gonna go on.

  318. James chapter one, verse five

  319. makes a bold promise to God's people.

  320. It tells us if we lack wisdom and we ask for it,

  321. God is going to give it to us.

  322. That's a promise you should claim, by the way.

  323. You can go in prayer and say,

  324. God, you promised me in your word

  325. that you would give wisdom to those who ask for it.

  326. I'm asking for it.

  327. What is our hope as we face the challenges in this world?

  328. As you are parenting children

  329. and you run up against situations

  330. that you have no idea how to approach,

  331. when you're talking with people

  332. and you don't have the wisdom to know the words to say

  333. in that moment to help and to calm and protect.

  334. What is your hope as you're dealing with those older

  335. and younger than you?

  336. As you're facing situations at work

  337. that are beyond your capacity,

  338. as you're trying to share the gospel

  339. with those who don't know Christ,

  340. your hope, brothers and sisters,

  341. is that Jesus is with you.

  342. Your hope is that he honors his promise

  343. in James chapter one, verse five,

  344. that he gives wisdom to those who ask.

  345. If you remember from the book of Proverbs,

  346. Jesus is the one who is the ultimate representation

  347. and fulfillment of wisdom.

  348. Jesus is with you by his spirit.

  349. That is our fuel and our power

  350. that keeps us going in the Christian life.

  351. As I prepare week in and week out

  352. to preach in this church building,

  353. I pray multiple times a week

  354. that God would be with me

  355. and that he would be with you

  356. because I know that if he isn't

  357. and I step into this pulpit,

  358. I am dead on arrival.

  359. I can do no good apart from him.

  360. John chapter 15,

    John 15 chapter mention

  361. I'm the vine, you are the branches.

  362. Apart from me, you can do no good.

  363. He is the one who is at work.

  364. Remember Mark chapter four,

  365. verses 26 through 29,

  366. the parable of the seed growing.

  367. The sower doesn't know how it grows.

  368. He's just sleeping, right?

  369. Because we're simply instruments.

  370. We're instruments for God's power

  371. at work in our lives.

  372. We don't just have the fuel though

  373. of Jesus' presence.

  374. We're told something else in this passage.

  375. It's not just that Jesus is with you,

  376. it's that others are with you as well.

  377. Okay, look with me.

  378. Verse seven, he calls the 12

  379. and he begins to send them out two by two.

  380. You'll notice this appeared

  381. in our Old Testament reading as well.

  382. Ecclesiastes says it's better

  383. for there to be two rather than one.

  384. Not only does Jesus send them out two by two,

  385. we're not told which two get paired up together.

  386. I mean, maybe like James and John

  387. were really hoping they were gonna get paired, you know?

  388. And maybe James got put with Matthias

  389. and that's not who he wanted to go out with.

  390. We don't even know because we're not told.

  391. Why would we need to be told?

  392. Personality is not what matters.

  393. We're not interested in personalities

  394. or personality-driven ministry.

  395. There's nothing complicated here about this point.

  396. I don't need to spend a lot of time explaining it

  397. because it's very simple.

  398. Christianity is not a team sport.

  399. It is a team sport.

  400. It's not a solo sport.

  401. Jesus sends people out as groups.

  402. He calls us together as a church community.

  403. When Jesus calls you to himself,

  404. he calls you to his people as well.

  405. It is a package deal.

  406. You cannot separate Jesus from his church.

  407. You cannot separate your Christian walk

  408. from the brothers and sisters around you.

  409. Do not try to follow Jesus by yourself.

  410. Those who are sitting in front of you

  411. and behind you and to your left and your right this morning

  412. are part of the fuel that God has given you

  413. to make it in the Christian life.

  414. They are who God has blessed you with.

  415. Remember I said God gives wisdom to those who ask for it?

  416. How do you think he gives that wisdom?

  417. Yes, at times directly by his spirit.

  418. Many other times, God gives you that wisdom

  419. through older and wiser saints.

  420. You can pray as much as you want for wisdom

  421. and you also need to put yourself

  422. in the place where wisdom comes.

  423. God has given you these people

  424. as part of his plan to impart you with wisdom.

  425. Those who are in this room with you

  426. are part of your answer to that prayer

  427. that God would honor his promise

  428. in James chapter one, verse five.

  429. You might hear people say things like this.

  430. I don't really need the church.

  431. You know, I've got my three Christian friends.

  432. And we have a group and we have fellowship

  433. and we meet together.

  434. That's great.

  435. How many of them are older than you and wiser than you?

  436. It's in the church that God blesses us

  437. with multiple generations.

  438. It's in the church that God blesses us

  439. with multiple backgrounds and ways of life.

  440. It's in the church that God puts us with people

  441. we would not otherwise be connected with.

  442. My guess is those three other people you hang out with

  443. are somewhat similar to you.

  444. There are people in this building

  445. that if they were not part of this church with you

  446. you would never meet them.

  447. And you would never go to them for wisdom.

  448. You often hear the phrase,

  449. don't try this at home.

  450. Christian version is this,

  451. don't try it alone.

  452. Do not live the Christian life by yourself.

  453. That's part of the reason we as a church

  454. are not interested in personality-driven ministries.

  455. If you've been at our church for a really long time,

  456. you might remember the time in our history

  457. where the pastor did everything up front.

  458. David Johnson's already been up here

  459. to read the Old Testament reading and to pray.

  460. Next week, it's gonna be Jim Franks

  461. who's gonna be up here

  462. to read the Old Testament reading and to pray.

  463. Week after that, first Sunday of April,

  464. it's gonna be John Alpeter

  465. who's gonna be up front

  466. to read the Old Testament reading and to pray.

  467. And I say that not to say

  468. that it's all about what happens here on Sunday morning,

  469. but that's one piece,

  470. one symbol of what it is that we want as a church,

  471. that our focus and our intensity

  472. is not around one person or personality,

  473. but that we are actually following Jesus together

  474. as one community,

  475. that we're not relying on one individual,

  476. but instead people who are walking side by side,

  477. following Jesus together.

  478. And as you see that assisting elder up front

  479. every Sunday morning,

  480. that is just one piece,

  481. one picture of what we want to be true

  482. of our lives as Christians Monday through Saturday.

  483. We want to be people who go at least two by two.

  484. Don't try to witness alone.

  485. Have others praying with and for you.

  486. Don't try to fight sin alone.

  487. Have others that you can confess to and grow with.

  488. Don't try to follow Jesus alone.

  489. And so that's why I say every Sunday

  490. that we're following Jesus together as one community.

  491. Jesus has given us his fuel in the church.

  492. What's our power to keep going?

  493. It's that Jesus is with us.

  494. Others are with us.

  495. It's not simply that though.

  496. It's also that Jesus provides for us.

  497. We have this interesting section here

  498. in verses eight through 10,

  499. where Jesus tells them to take nothing for their journey.

  500. And what I want to tell you up front

  501. is that all of you in your Christian life

  502. need to take a staff.

  503. That was a joke, okay?

  504. We don't want to approach this passage rigidly.

  505. Jesus is giving specific instructions

  506. for this specific group.

  507. So we want not a rigid rule from this,

  508. but a principle.

  509. We read scripture with scripture.

  510. That's one of the ways we interpret the Bible.

  511. And we can look at other portions of scripture

  512. and see these are not always Jesus' instructions.

  513. So in this passage,

  514. they're allowed to have sandals with them.

  515. Guess what?

  516. In Luke 10, they're out of luck, no sandals.

  517. Matthew 10, no sandals.

  518. Matthew 10, Luke 9, no staff.

  519. Here, they're allowed to have a staff.

  520. Jesus doesn't give these sorts of requirements

  521. in other commissioning passages.

  522. So I've already talked about Matthew 28.

  523. Jesus does not say,

  524. behold, I'm with you to the end of the age

  525. as long as you don't have a second tunic.

  526. Okay?

  527. Mark 8, there's a commissioning.

  528. Jesus does not provide these sorts of instructions.

  529. In fact, we have opposite examples.

  530. So in Acts chapter 28, we see the apostle Paul.

    Acts 28 chapter mention

  531. He's in prison for two years.

  532. He supports himself,

  533. presumably out of his own savings,

  534. while under house arrest,

  535. and people come visit him so he can teach.

  536. Other parts in Paul's career,

  537. he's making tents.

  538. He's working to support himself.

  539. Luke chapter 8, verse 3,

    Luke 8:3

  540. Jesus is supported by women

  541. out of their resources

  542. who give him what he needs.

  543. Another way of coming at it is this.

  544. This is for a limited mission, right?

  545. Jesus is sending out these particular people

  546. on a specific mission.

  547. He's not sending you out

  548. on that same specific mission.

  549. So if you have two tunics,

  550. it might be okay.

  551. Okay?

  552. It also assumes other people aren't doing it.

  553. If everyone is doing this,

  554. there's not going to be any house

  555. for people to stay at and be fed by.

  556. So the whole thing is predicated

  557. on this other community that's helping them.

  558. At risk of beating a dead horse,

  559. I just want to say,

  560. when we come to passages like this,

  561. it's tempting to get weird with them.

  562. Okay?

  563. What we want to do with passages like this

  564. is recognize what's different

  565. between us and the original context.

  566. What we also want to do

  567. is to draw out the general principle

  568. that can apply to multiple people

  569. in multiple situations.

  570. The principle is this.

  571. Simply,

  572. that we look to God ultimately

  573. for our power and our provision.

  574. The principle is simply

  575. that we look to God

  576. for our power and our provision.

  577. God is the one who bankrolls his mission.

  578. Our hope,

  579. personally,

  580. and our hope as a church,

  581. is not in large bank accounts.

  582. Our hope,

  583. personally,

  584. and as a church,

  585. is not in buildings.

  586. And I'm not just talking about

  587. things that are financial and physical.

  588. We trust,

  589. as we go out in God's mission,

  590. that he is at work.

  591. Because if he isn't,

  592. it's worthless.

  593. The promise,

  594. as we go out

  595. and share the good news,

  596. is that God already has people

  597. who belong to him

  598. to hear it and receive it.

  599. In fact,

  600. that's the word of encouragement

  601. he gives to Paul

  602. in Acts chapter 18.

    Acts 18 chapter mention

  603. Paul's in Corinth.

  604. The Lord says to this,

  605. it says,

  606. God has already planned

  607. who he's going to use Paul

  608. as his instrument

  609. to bring to himself.

  610. When we go out

  611. following Jesus together,

  612. our reliance,

  613. our power,

  614. our provision

  615. is from him alone.

  616. Even the people

  617. who hear and respond

  618. to his word

  619. are people

  620. he's already chosen.

  621. We have nothing

  622. that Jesus doesn't provide.

  623. And so the apostles here

  624. present us a small picture

  625. of that in this situation.

  626. In other words,

  627. we are instruments.

  628. God provides the power.

  629. We're simply instruments.

  630. God's the one

  631. who provides.

  632. In fact,

  633. we see that in verse 7.

  634. He gives them authority

  635. over the unclean spirits.

  636. Okay?

  637. We're instruments.

  638. We need God's power.

  639. Speaking of instruments,

  640. instruments,

  641. I had a lot of trouble

  642. the past couple weeks

  643. with my vacuum cleaner.

  644. And I'll tell you,

  645. I have a shark vacuum cleaner.

  646. I bought it.

  647. Yeah, that's right.

  648. Watch out.

  649. I bought it three,

  650. almost three years ago

  651. when I got my house.

  652. And I'll tell you

  653. that as I was having trouble

  654. with this vacuum cleaner,

  655. the roller wasn't working,

  656. I began to have great

  657. and magnificent dreams

  658. of a Dyson.

  659. And I looked on Amazon

  660. to see what it would cost

  661. for a Dyson.

  662. And I think it was at least

  663. a promise of two future children,

  664. if not three,

  665. depending on the model.

  666. And so I decided

  667. that was not part of my future.

  668. I would like my,

  669. you know,

  670. if I ever have children,

  671. I'd like them to stay in my house.

  672. I don't want them to have to go

  673. and work for Amazon

  674. for the rest of their lives.

  675. Maybe you have a Dyson.

  676. And if you do,

  677. I'm grateful for you.

  678. It's not the Dyson

  679. that has the power.

  680. It's not the Dyson

  681. that's great.

  682. It's the one who made it.

  683. And it doesn't matter

  684. how great your Dyson is

  685. if you can't plug it in.

  686. It doesn't matter

  687. how glorious

  688. of a vacuum cleaner it is

  689. if it doesn't have

  690. a power source.

  691. Brothers and sisters,

  692. some of us are sharks.

  693. Maybe a few of us are Dysons.

  694. All the glory goes to God.

  695. And without his power,

  696. it doesn't matter.

  697. Without God's provision,

  698. it doesn't matter.

  699. It's a worthless piece of plastic.

  700. Same is true for us.

  701. It is Jesus

  702. who provides

  703. the fuel

  704. and the power

  705. for our mission.

  706. God made you.

  707. Gives you all the power

  708. that you need.

  709. And so that's what we do

  710. when we pray every Sunday.

  711. It's what you do

  712. when you pray

  713. as an individual.

  714. It's what you do

  715. when you pray as families.

  716. You're saying,

  717. we don't have power.

  718. We don't have an extra tunic.

  719. We didn't bring any food.

  720. If this is going to work,

  721. God,

  722. you're going to have to show up.

  723. And so we're coming to you now

  724. and we're asking you to do that.

  725. We're asking you to show up.

  726. We're asking you to give us wisdom

  727. where we need wisdom.

  728. We're asking you to provide

  729. where we need provision.

  730. We're asking that you would be at work

  731. because if you're not,

  732. what we do is worthless.

  733. We're asking for God's power

  734. and fuel to keep us going.

  735. We have a sobering ending here

  736. to this passage.

  737. Verse 11,

  738. they're told,

  739. if a city doesn't receive them,

  740. they're to shake the dust

  741. off of their feet.

  742. The way we would say it is this.

  743. You know what?

  744. You just need to wash your hands of that.

  745. It's time to move on.

  746. It's a symbol

  747. that they're moving on

  748. from that place.

  749. Don't have anything to do with it.

  750. Don't be polluted by it.

  751. Don't be affected by it.

  752. Just move on.

  753. There are times

  754. when God's word

  755. is accepted and rejoiced at.

  756. There are times

  757. when God's word

  758. is rejected

  759. and hated.

  760. In both situations,

  761. the word has served its purpose.

  762. The Bible actually teaches this explicitly

  763. in 2 Corinthians 2.

  764. Paul talks about

  765. what's called

  766. the aroma of Christ

  767. and he says,

  768. to some people,

  769. it's a fragrance

  770. from death to death.

  771. The other,

  772. a fragrance

  773. from life to life.

  774. Some people smell the gospel

  775. and it smells wonderful

  776. and beautiful.

  777. Other people smell

  778. the aroma of Christ

  779. and it smells like death.

  780. The apostles are going

  781. to experience that

  782. as they go.

  783. They're not to be stopped by it

  784. but instead

  785. to keep preaching repentance.

  786. We're told explicitly,

  787. verse 12,

  788. what it is that they're saying.

  789. It says,

  790. so they went out

  791. and proclaimed

  792. that people should repent.

  793. It's what I've said before

  794. is that knowledge

  795. is dangerous.

  796. And knowledge

  797. is dangerous

  798. because we're held

  799. accountable

  800. for what we know.

  801. God uses his word

  802. to convict

  803. and convert.

  804. God also uses

  805. his word

  806. to confirm

  807. his judgment.

  808. It confirms

  809. even more

  810. how much someone

  811. has rejected

  812. him.

  813. And so we end

  814. with this

  815. as we look

  816. to God's fuel

  817. and his power.

  818. As we look

  819. to the ways

  820. he provides

  821. by being with us

  822. and giving us

  823. his people,

  824. it's important

  825. to remember

  826. that is for those

  827. who follow

  828. after Jesus.

  829. that's for those

  830. who have heard

  831. this verse 12

  832. message of repentance

  833. and they have received it.

  834. Not that the dust

  835. has been shaken off

  836. but instead

  837. they are joining

  838. with the apostles,

  839. following after Jesus,

  840. looking to enjoy him

  841. and glorify him

  842. forever.

  843. Because

  844. Jesus is going

  845. to go on

  846. later in the gospel

  847. of Mark

  848. and die

  849. for all of these people.

  850. God the Father

  851. is going to shake

  852. the dust

  853. off his feet

  854. at Jesus

  855. so he doesn't

  856. have to do it

  857. for us.

  858. He is going

  859. to do that

  860. to bridge

  861. the gap

  862. that's been created

  863. between us

  864. and God

  865. so that Jesus

  866. can be with us.

  867. He is going

  868. to do that

  869. to adopt us

  870. as his sons

  871. and daughters

  872. and so that Jesus

  873. is not simply

  874. with us

  875. but he also

  876. gives us

  877. this great

  878. inheritance

  879. as people

  880. who are his family.

  881. He does that

  882. to earn

  883. for us

  884. and provide

  885. for us

  886. the fuel

  887. and the provision

  888. that we need

  889. to keep going

  890. and that is

  891. a fuel

  892. that will burn

  893. longer and farther

  894. than any guilt

  895. or shame.

  896. It is the fuel

  897. that will keep us

  898. going

  899. in the Christian life.

  900. In Luke chapter 10

    Luke 10 chapter mention

  901. we're told

  902. a similar story.

  903. Jesus is sending

  904. not the 12

  905. but he's sending

  906. out the 72.

  907. He's sending out

  908. this greater number

  909. to do a very

  910. similar mission.

  911. And they return

  912. after Jesus

  913. has given them

  914. this authority

  915. and they're so

  916. excited

  917. because of all

  918. the things

  919. they've seen

  920. and done

  921. and it says this

  922. the 72

  923. returned with joy

  924. saying Lord

  925. even the demons

  926. are subject

  927. to us

  928. in your name.

  929. They're thrilled

  930. that God's

  931. at work

  932. through them

  933. and Jesus

  934. rebukes them.

  935. Verse 20

  936. do not rejoice

  937. in this

  938. that the spirits

  939. are subject

  940. to you

  941. but rejoice

  942. that your names

  943. are written

  944. in heaven.

  945. Brothers and sisters

  946. our ultimate

  947. hope and joy

  948. the fuel

  949. that keeps us

  950. going

  951. in the Christian

  952. life

  953. is not guilt

  954. or shame

  955. or discipline

  956. or diligence.

  957. The fuel

  958. that keeps us

  959. going

  960. is what Jesus

  961. provides for us

  962. this promise

  963. that he

  964. is with us.

  965. He is with us

  966. now and he

  967. will be with us

  968. in an even

  969. greater way

  970. in the future

  971. that our names

  972. are written

  973. down in heaven

  974. and that there's

  975. nothing that can

  976. be done

  977. to erase them.

  978. That is a motivation

  979. and a power

  980. and a fuel

  981. that enables us

  982. to do more

  983. than anything

  984. else could

  985. and so we look

  986. forward to that

  987. time when we

  988. experience God

  989. with us

  990. more than we

  991. ever can imagine.

  992. We experience

  993. being with

  994. others and we

  995. see the

  996. fulfillment

  997. of everything

  998. that Jesus

  999. has promised

  1000. that no eye

  1001. has seen

  1002. or ear

  1003. has heard

  1004. but God

  1005. has prepared

  1006. for those

  1007. who love

  1008. him.

  1009. Let's pray.

  1010. Our Father

  1011. in heaven

  1012. we praise

  1013. you and

  1014. thank you

  1015. that you

  1016. are with us

  1017. and we

  1018. thank you

  1019. for the ways

  1020. you've been

  1021. with us

  1022. this morning

  1023. by your

  1024. word

  1025. to encourage

  1026. and sustain

  1027. us.

  1028. We ask

  1029. that you

  1030. would continue

  1031. to do

  1032. that

  1033. that you

  1034. would stir

  1035. up

  1036. Jesus'

  1037. words

  1038. in our

  1039. minds

  1040. and you'd

  1041. stir us

  1042. up to

  1043. walk

  1044. not alone

  1045. but with

  1046. each other

  1047. that we

  1048. would

  1049. experience

  1050. your

  1051. presence

  1052. we'd

  1053. experience

  1054. the

  1055. presence

  1056. of

  1057. one

  1058. another

  1059. and

  1060. we'd

  1061. experience

  1062. the

  1063. provision

  1064. and the

  1065. power

  1066. that you

  1067. give us

  1068. along the

  1069. way.

  1070. We thank

  1071. you that

  1072. we haven't

  1073. earned or

  1074. deserved

  1075. any of

  1076. these

  1077. things

  1078. but instead

  1079. we look

  1080. to your

  1081. son and
