  1. Good morning. My name is Matthew Capone, and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church,

  2. and it's my joy to bring God's Word to you today.

  3. A special welcome if you're new or visiting with us. We're glad that you're here,

  4. and we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats,

  5. but because we're following Jesus together as one community,

  6. and as we follow Jesus together, we become convinced there's no one so good.

  7. They don't need God's grace, and no one's so bad that they can't have it.

  8. And so that's why we turn week after week to hear what God has to say to us in His Word.

  9. We're continuing our series in the Gospel of Mark,

  10. and you'll remember that the Gospels tell us the story of Jesus in His life and His death and His resurrection.

  11. If you've looked at this morning's passage, you may have noticed something strange,

  12. which is that we ended chapter 6 last week, and suddenly we've jumped to verse 24 of chapter 7.

  13. And so you might be thinking, what happened to 7, 1 through 23?

  14. And the answer is we did cover it. We just covered it a little bit early.

  15. When I was gone on vacation and Wes Cowton came here as a guest preacher,

  16. he preached 7, 1 through 23.

  17. And so I figured I would spare you hearing the same passage preached twice in a six-week period.

  18. And so that's the reason we're moving to verse 24.

  19. Now, in the last couple portions that we've looked at in the Gospel of Mark,

  20. we've had these negative examples.

  21. We talked last week about the negative example of the disciples

  22. and the fact that they were hard-hearted.

  23. They did not understand that Jesus was the good shepherd who had come to care for them.

  24. And when you looked at 7, 1 through 23,

  25. there was also the negative example of the Pharisees who were consumed,

  26. not with hardness of heart, but self-righteousness.

  27. They believed all that mattered was what was on the outside.

  28. Jesus rebukes them and tells them that it's what's on the inside that's actually important.

  29. And so now, after those two negative examples,

  30. we're finally going to have a positive example of what it looks like to have great faith in Jesus.

  31. The disciples had too low a view of Jesus.

  32. The Pharisees had too high a view of themselves.

  33. Here we have a woman who, in the parallel passage in Matthew chapter 15,

    Matthew 15 chapter mention

  34. Jesus says,

  35. O woman, great is your faith.

  36. So we have just a simple question as we come to this passage this morning,

  37. which is this,

  38. how do we have great faith?

  39. We're not going to be like the Pharisees or the disciples.

  40. Instead, we want to be people who see Jesus for who he truly is.

  41. And so it's for that reason we're going to turn now to Mark chapter 7.

    Mark 7 chapter mention

  42. As we turn, remember that this is God's word.

  43. And God tells us that his word is more precious than gold,

  44. even the finest gold,

  45. and it's sweeter than honey,

  46. even honey that comes straight from the honeycomb,

  47. which is why we read now starting at verse 24.

  48. And from there he arose and went away to the region of Tyre and Sidon.

  49. And he entered a house and did not want anyone to know,

  50. yet he could not be hidden.

  51. But immediately a woman whose little daughter had an unclean spirit heard of him

  52. and came and fell down at his feet.

  53. Now the woman was a Gentile, a Syrophoenician by birth,

  54. and she begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter.

  55. Verse 27.

  56. And he said to her,

  57. Let the children be fed first,

  58. for it is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs.

  59. But she answered him,

  60. Yes, Lord.

  61. Yet even the dogs under the table eat the children's crumbs.

  62. And he said to her,

  63. For this statement you may go your way.

  64. The demon has left your daughter.

  65. And she went home and found the child lying in bed,

  66. and the demon gone.

  67. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's Word.

  68. Our Father in Heaven,

  69. we praise you and thank you again for the miracle that you speak to us.

  70. You're not a God who's far away and distant,

  71. but you're a God who's close and near.

  72. And one of the ways that we know that is that you've given us your Word,

  73. that we could hear and learn.

  74. And so we ask for that this morning,

  75. that you would use these words from hundreds of years ago

  76. to make an impact on us and our lives,

  77. that you would encourage us,

  78. you challenge us,

  79. but even more than that,

  80. you would help us to see Jesus for who he truly is

  81. and respond to him with joy and love and gratitude.

  82. Now, we ask these things thankful again

  83. that we don't have to earn them or deserve them,

  84. but instead we simply ask them in Jesus' name.

  85. Amen.

  86. Amen.

  87. I'm wondering what you would say if someone asked you,

  88. what are the major challenges that Jesus faced in his ministry here on earth?

  89. Some of you might immediately think,

  90. well, he had this opposition from the Pharisees.

  91. We might also think of the ways in which the disciples failed to understand him.

  92. They abandoned him in his darkest hour.

  93. And those things would be true.

  94. I don't want you to miss another challenge that Jesus had,

  95. though at least here in the Gospel of Mark,

  96. we see Jesus had trouble finding time to eat.

  97. And we've seen that a couple times.

  98. Back in chapter 6, remember things were so bad,

  99. they were so hectic,

  100. after his disciples returned from the mission that he had sent them out on,

  101. that they didn't have time to eat.

  102. And that was when he pulled them away

  103. and meant to go on a retreat,

  104. and the 5,000 came and he had to feed them.

  105. And so there's a certain irony here that we didn't talk about,

  106. the fact that Jesus' disciples can't eat,

  107. and what they end up doing is having to feed other people in the midst of that.

  108. That's not the only time we saw that, though.

  109. Remember in chapter 3, the same thing happened.

  110. The crowd had gathered around Jesus.

  111. They were pressing in so much that he was not able to eat.

  112. And that's when his family came,

  113. and they tried to stage a little bit of an intervention

  114. to rescue Jesus from himself and his reckless schedule.

  115. That helps us understand what's happening at the beginning of this passage.

  116. Verse 24, we find out Jesus did not want anyone to know

  117. that he'd gone away to this region far away from Galilee.

  118. Potentially, Jesus here is still trying to get the break

  119. that he's been working at for multiple sections now.

  120. And yet, it seems like every time it's impossible for Jesus to escape

  121. and have some time to himself

  122. because he's constantly followed by these folks

  123. who need his healing and his power.

  124. And of course, that's exactly what we see here.

  125. Verse 24, yet he could not be hidden.

  126. Jesus wants some time away,

  127. and more and more that is impossible for him.

  128. Verse 25, immediately, a woman comes to him.

  129. She has this problem, which is that her daughter has an unclean spirit,

  130. and it sounds like she knows a little bit of Jesus and his power,

  131. and so she thinks this will be her answer.

  132. Now that Jesus has entered the region in which she lives,

  133. she will have a chance at a miracle.

  134. But we find out something unexpected and different about this woman,

  135. that she's a Gentile, a Syrophoenician by birth.

  136. Now this reference, Gentile, when we see this in the New Testament,

  137. it's talking about someone's ethnicity,

  138. and it's a way of saying this person is not Jewish.

  139. We heard this in the Old Testament.

  140. The phrase would be used, the nations,

  141. which is a way of talking about those who are not part of God's chosen people.

  142. And it's not just that she's not ethnically Jewish.

  143. We also find out she's not Jewish by geography.

  144. She's a Syrophoenician by birth.

  145. That's a reference to the region in which she grew up,

  146. the region in which Tyre and Sidon are located.

  147. These are cities that are in the area of Phoenicia.

  148. So she's in this city that's in a larger area

  149. that's separated from the land of the people of God.

  150. Mark here is driving home the point for us

  151. that she is an outsider in multiple ways.

  152. She is not just non-Jewish by nature.

  153. She's also not a Jew by nurture.

  154. By ethnicity and geography, this woman is a Gentile.

  155. And so she is the wrong person,

  156. in the wrong place,

  157. with the wrong gender.

  158. And on top of that, she doesn't have an unclean son.

  159. She has an unclean daughter.

  160. Mark is portraying for us

  161. this overlapping complex of cleanliness issues.

  162. There's a constellation of reasons

  163. why Jesus would be expected

  164. not to interact with this woman.

  165. It's not just that she's in the wrong place, though.

  166. Jesus is also in the wrong place.

  167. It should be a surprise to us

  168. that Jesus has decided to travel to this region,

  169. which is northwest of where he was in Galilee.

  170. Jesus almost never plays away games.

  171. This is one of only a few times

  172. where we see Jesus in Gentile territory.

  173. We have only seen it once before in the Gospel of Mark.

  174. Think back all the way to Mark chapter 5,

    Mark 5 chapter mention

  175. when Jesus healed a man with a demon

  176. who was in the country of the Gerasenes.

  177. We find out later in the story of the Bible,

  178. in Acts chapter 10, verse 28,

    Acts 10:28

  179. that Jews were not supposed to visit Gentiles.

  180. And so Jesus is going outside of the expectations

  181. and rules of his people,

  182. both in the region that he's visiting

  183. and the woman that he's interacting with.

  184. Why?

  185. It's not a coincidence that this story comes at this place

  186. because in the section right before it,

  187. the section that Wes preached on,

  188. chapter 7, verses 1 through 23,

  189. Jesus has this encounter with the Pharisees

  190. where he talks to them about this issue of cleanliness.

  191. And if you think back all the way

  192. to when Wes preached on that,

  193. he tells them,

  194. it's not what's on the outside that makes you unclean,

  195. it's what's on the inside.

  196. In other words,

  197. Jesus here is giving us a text case

  198. of what he's just taught.

  199. Jesus, let's see if you actually believe

  200. what you just said in the previous passage.

  201. Let's see if you're actually going to act on it.

  202. And he does.

  203. He finds maybe one of the stickiest issues

  204. that he can to prove that he believes what he's taught.

  205. To prove that he's not afraid

  206. of being made unclean on the outside,

  207. he's more concerned with what is on the inside.

  208. And so it's with all of that background

  209. that we understand we have a test case here

  210. that Mark is presenting us with

  211. to show us that Jesus is going to put his money

  212. where his mouth is.

  213. We pick up then again in the story,

  214. here this woman comes, verse 25 and 26,

  215. she immediately enters into this confrontation with Jesus.

  216. It tells us that she fell down at his feet,

  217. verse 25, verse 26,

  218. she begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter.

  219. And the verb tense of this word beg

  220. indicates that this is not something that she did once,

  221. it was something that she did over and over again.

  222. This woman is showing us how desperate she is

  223. as she creates a scene right in front of Jesus

  224. so that she has the best chance possible

  225. of healing for her daughter.

  226. And it's at that moment

  227. that Jesus does something unexpected and surprising.

  228. Think back to what we've seen before.

  229. Chapter six, he sees the 5,000 on this hill

  230. and we're told that he believed

  231. they were like sheep without a shepherd

  232. and he was filled with compassion.

  233. The end of chapter six,

  234. our passage from last week,

  235. what does he do?

  236. He's going out and healing people

  237. right after he's had this interaction with the disciples.

  238. So our expectation would be

  239. that Jesus, of course,

  240. would be happy and willing to intervene

  241. in this woman's life.

  242. That he would be filled with compassion

  243. and sympathy for her.

  244. That he would want her daughter

  245. to be healed immediately.

  246. We would think after what Jesus just taught us

  247. that he would be eager to show

  248. that he's not afraid of someone who's unclean.

  249. And Jesus does the exact opposite.

  250. He insults this woman for her race.

  251. He flips the tables on us

  252. as we're expecting this momentum,

  253. as we're seeing the direction he's headed,

  254. as we think that Jesus is going to make good on his word,

  255. he does something that should catch us off guard.

  256. Verse 27,

  257. And he said to her,

  258. Let the children be fed first,

  259. for it is not right to take the children's bread

  260. and throw it to the dogs.

  261. The woman asks for healing.

  262. He calls her a dog.

  263. Now, some folks have pointed out

  264. that the term he uses for dog here

  265. would not be a stray dog,

  266. but a pet dog.

  267. That makes it less of an insult.

  268. That does not stop it from being an insult.

  269. Okay, if someone calls you a pet dog,

  270. you're not going to think,

  271. Man, that's such a great thing they said to me.

  272. I'm glad I'm not a stray dog.

  273. I mean, yeah, it's better to be a pet dog

  274. than a stray dog.

  275. Jesus just said,

  276. She's a dog among humans.

  277. You cannot avoid the way

  278. in which he's just insulted her.

  279. On top of that,

  280. dog was a term that Jews would use

  281. to refer to Gentiles.

  282. This is a type of slur

  283. that Jesus is using against her.

  284. And he's actually making a point

  285. that we see throughout the Gospels.

  286. He's making this point

  287. that he's come first to the Jews

  288. and then to the Gentiles.

  289. So when he says,

  290. Why would I do this

  291. when the children should be fed first?

  292. What he's saying is,

  293. Why would I help you,

  294. an unclean Gentile woman

  295. in a Gentile territory

  296. with a daughter who's demon-possessed,

  297. when I have Jews who need me?

  298. Why would I not follow

  299. the priority of my ministry?

  300. In the parallel passage in Matthew 15,

  301. he tells her,

  302. I was sent only to the lost sheep

  303. of the house of Israel.

  304. That's why, by the way,

  305. we don't see Jesus leaving Israel very often.

  306. That's why in Romans 1, verse 16,

    Romans 1:16

  307. Paul tells us that the Gospel

  308. was first to the Jews

  309. and then to the Gentiles.

  310. And yet that doesn't answer the question

  311. of why Jesus responds in this way.

  312. Because he's just taught us

  313. that uncleanness doesn't bother him.

  314. He's just demonstrated

  315. that unclean areas don't threaten him

  316. because he's the one

  317. who chose to travel there.

  318. So why is it that Jesus

  319. insults this woman?

  320. I want you to think about it this way.

  321. When I was in my final year of seminary,

  322. I was trying to find a job,

  323. any job,

  324. and so I was beating the bushes

  325. to figure out what openings

  326. there might be.

  327. And one of the opportunities

  328. that I explored

  329. is something you all are familiar with

  330. if you've been with us for a while,

  331. which is to work for our college ministry,

  332. RUF.

  333. Jonathan Clark preached here

  334. maybe a month ago.

  335. He's starting a new college ministry

  336. at UCCS.

  337. And so I was trying to figure out

  338. what would be an opening for me

  339. to be able to serve in ministry.

  340. And as someone coming out of seminary,

  341. if you're a new grad,

  342. it's much harder to find jobs

  343. than if you're someone with experience.

  344. And so I was talking at that time

  345. to this college ministry

  346. about a potential opening

  347. at a school in New England.

  348. And I called the man

  349. who was in charge of hiring for this job,

  350. and we had an hour-long conversation.

  351. During that hour-long conversation,

  352. that man kept challenging me

  353. and pushing me at every turn.

  354. He was borderline a jerk

  355. for an hour on the phone.

  356. Okay?

  357. At the end of the phone call,

  358. he says this,

  359. I'm sorry if I was hard on you,

  360. but if you can't handle me,

  361. you can't handle this school.

  362. What was he saying?

  363. I was testing you

  364. to see what you were made of.

  365. The fact that I was a jerk to you

  366. was part of the interview

  367. because I wanted to see

  368. if you were going to be able

  369. to push back on me.

  370. I wanted to see

  371. if you had the spine

  372. to handle the types of students

  373. that I know are at this school

  374. because if you can't stand up

  375. for an hour on the phone,

  376. there's no time that I have

  377. to talk to you anymore.

  378. He was testing me.

  379. He wanted to see what was there.

  380. Now, long story short,

  381. that school didn't just not open up for me.

  382. It didn't open up for anyone.

  383. There still is not an RUF there.

  384. But I learned something important

  385. about life and about that man

  386. in that moment.

  387. People will do things to you

  388. to see how you respond.

  389. Jesus here, like a good teacher,

  390. is testing this woman.

  391. He wants to see what she's made of.

  392. He wants to understand

  393. the level of her faith.

  394. That's the way tests work.

  395. If you're a student or in life,

  396. tests reveal and show

  397. what's already there.

  398. Tests allow a chance for you

  399. on the outside

  400. to demonstrate

  401. what was already on the inside.

  402. That's, by the way,

  403. part of what happens

  404. in the book of Job.

  405. God uses Job

  406. to demonstrate Job's faith

  407. in the midst of suffering

  408. and to show him off

  409. as an example to the devil.

  410. Here, Jesus is testing

  411. this woman's faith

  412. to show her off to us.

  413. A good teacher, right,

  414. if they're testing you,

  415. they hope that you pass.

  416. No teacher who's worth anything

  417. sits alone in a room

  418. putting their hands together

  419. and giggling

  420. about how no student's

  421. going to be able

  422. to mount this test.

  423. No, a great teacher

  424. wants you to pass.

  425. A great teacher's

  426. preparing you

  427. throughout the school year

  428. to do as well as you can.

  429. A good teacher

  430. is cheering you on

  431. because they want you

  432. to succeed.

  433. The test is there

  434. so that they can show off

  435. what you know.

  436. Jesus here is testing

  437. this woman

  438. so that he can show

  439. what she knows

  440. and believes.

  441. And so we see

  442. in verse 28

  443. that she passes the test.

  444. She enters into

  445. his illustration

  446. and demonstrates

  447. her faith

  448. by showing

  449. that she understands

  450. the nature

  451. of God's grace.

  452. Yes, I'm a dog.

  453. But don't you give

  454. good things

  455. even to pets?

  456. Yes, I don't have

  457. anything

  458. that should impress you.

  459. I have no reason

  460. to ask something

  461. from you.

  462. But isn't that

  463. the type of person

  464. that you are?

  465. Aren't you

  466. the type of person

  467. who gives

  468. money and bread

  469. without price?

  470. Aren't you the person

  471. who cares for people

  472. who can't give

  473. anything back?

  474. Aren't you the type

  475. of person

  476. who shows mercy

  477. even to dogs?

  478. And Jesus here,

  479. verse 29,

  480. is delighted.

  481. He is the teacher

  482. who is thrilled

  483. to see his student

  484. get an A.

  485. He says to her,

  486. For this statement

  487. you may go your way.

  488. The demon

  489. has left

  490. your daughter.

  491. In the same passage

  492. in Matthew 15,

  493. he says,

  494. O woman,

  495. great is

  496. your faith.

  497. Jesus is asking

  498. whether she would

  499. see and believe

  500. and act

  501. on his goodness

  502. and she

  503. does.

  504. Jesus is testing

  505. her

  506. and she

  507. passes.

  508. Now I told you

  509. at the beginning

  510. we were looking

  511. to answer the question

  512. of what does it mean

  513. to have great faith

  514. and how can

  515. we be people

  516. of that type

  517. of faith?

  518. And we see

  519. at least a couple

  520. things that I want

  521. to focus on

  522. in this woman.

  523. First,

  524. her persistence

  525. and second,

  526. her humility.

  527. Now first,

  528. her persistence

  529. and second,

  530. her humility.

  531. One of the

  532. characteristics

  533. of faith

  534. is that it

  535. is relentless.

  536. And it's relentless

  537. not because the person

  538. who has faith

  539. believes they deserve

  540. something,

  541. but because that person

  542. with relentless faith

  543. understands God

  544. and his grace

  545. and his character.

  546. A person

  547. with great faith

  548. does not give up

  549. easily.

  550. That person

  551. comes back to God

  552. again

  553. and again

  554. and again.

  555. In fact,

  556. this is a theme

  557. that we see

  558. throughout the Bible.

  559. In Genesis chapter 32,

    Genesis 32 chapter mention

  560. Jacob wrestles

  561. with God

  562. throughout the entire

  563. night

  564. and refuses

  565. to let him go

  566. until God

  567. blesses him.

  568. Jacob is relentless

  569. in his encounter

  570. with God.

  571. Luke 18,

  572. Jesus tells this story

  573. about a persistent

  574. widow who needs

  575. justice from a

  576. terrible judge

  577. and so she harasses

  578. him over and over

  579. again until he

  580. gives her what she

  581. wants.

  582. And then Jesus

  583. says,

  584. that's the way

  585. you should be

  586. in prayer.

  587. You should be

  588. coming back

  589. again and again

  590. telling God

  591. what you need

  592. and want.

  593. Same thing

  594. happens here.

  595. This woman

  596. is not put off

  597. by Jesus' answer.

  598. She doesn't say,

  599. oh, okay,

  600. I guess you're not

  601. here to help

  602. people like me

  603. and then walks

  604. away.

  605. She has

  606. Genesis 32,

  607. Luke 18

  608. type of faith

  609. that refuses

  610. refuses to let

  611. go and refuses

  612. to give up.

  613. And Jesus

  614. loves her

  615. persistence.

  616. Jesus loves

  617. the fact that

  618. she is

  619. relentless.

  620. Remember the

  621. disciples in

  622. chapter 6,

  623. all the disciples

  624. had was a lot

  625. of fear.

  626. Here instead,

  627. she continues

  628. to ask for help.

  629. brothers and

  630. sisters,

  631. having great

  632. faith means

  633. that we

  634. keep asking

  635. God again

  636. and again.

  637. Having great

  638. faith means

  639. that we

  640. don't give

  641. up.

  642. Having great

  643. faith means

  644. that we're like

  645. the widow in

  646. Luke 18

  647. who keeps

  648. crying out

  649. for justice.

  650. Keep asking.

  651. God invites

  652. you to

  653. test him.

  654. God loves

  655. great

  656. faith.

  657. And so

  658. keep asking.

  659. Keep asking

  660. that God

  661. would change

  662. you and

  663. your heart.

  664. Keep asking

  665. God that he

  666. would change

  667. the hearts

  668. and lives

  669. of those

  670. you love.

  671. Keep asking

  672. God that he

  673. would redeem

  674. past failures

  675. and sins

  676. and mistakes

  677. yours

  678. and the

  679. ones of

  680. those you

  681. love.

  682. Keep asking

  683. God to

  684. protect you

  685. from sin

  686. and compromise.

  687. Keep asking

  688. God for the

  689. wisdom that

  690. you know you

  691. need and you

  692. don't have.

  693. Keep asking

  694. God to give

  695. you purpose

  696. in your work

  697. that you

  698. could sustain

  699. and bless

  700. others.

  701. If you

  702. want to have

  703. great faith,

  704. keep asking.

  705. in the

  706. words of

  707. Winston

  708. Churchill,

  709. never,

  710. never,

  711. never give

  712. up.

  713. And for the

  714. Christian,

  715. never give

  716. up in

  717. prayer.

  718. Keep

  719. coming back

  720. to God.

  721. God.

  722. That raises

  723. another question

  724. for us

  725. though,

  726. which is

  727. how do

  728. we

  729. sustain

  730. that

  731. kind

  732. of

  733. persistence?

  734. How are

  735. we able

  736. to stay

  737. relentless

  738. before God

  739. week in

  740. and week

  741. out,

  742. day after

  743. day?

  744. Well,

  745. she shows

  746. us the

  747. answer for

  748. that as

  749. well.

  750. We stay

  751. persistent

  752. in our

  753. faith because

  754. we rely on

  755. God and

  756. his character,

  757. not ourselves.

  758. We're able

  759. to remain

  760. persistent in

  761. our faith because

  762. we rely on

  763. God's character,

  764. not ourselves.

  765. And so we

  766. see this

  767. tremendous

  768. humility that

  769. the woman

  770. models for

  771. us.

  772. She is not

  773. coming to

  774. Jesus based

  775. on her

  776. status.

  777. She's not

  778. coming because

  779. she's a Jew

  780. because she

  781. isn't.

  782. She's not

  783. coming because

  784. she's from

  785. the right

  786. place because

  787. she isn't.

  788. She's not

  789. coming because

  790. she's the

  791. right gender

  792. because she

  793. isn't.

  794. She is

  795. coming because

  796. she knows

  797. that Jesus

  798. is a man

  799. of mercy.

  800. And so we

  801. see that

  802. humility in

  803. verse 28

  804. when she

  805. says,

  806. even the

  807. dogs under

  808. the table

  809. eat the

  810. children's

  811. crumbs.

  812. In other

  813. words,

  814. I know

  815. I'm a

  816. dog.

  817. I know

  818. I haven't

  819. earned anything

  820. from you.

  821. I know

  822. I don't

  823. deserve

  824. something

  825. from you.

  826. And I

  827. know that's

  828. not what

  829. matters.

  830. I know

  831. what matters

  832. in this

  833. situation is

  834. your mercy

  835. and your

  836. grace.

  837. I know

  838. the kind

  839. of character

  840. that you

  841. have.

  842. I'm aware

  843. of the

  844. fact that

  845. you're at

  846. least as

  847. kind as a

  848. regular human

  849. is to her

  850. pets.

  851. And so I'm

  852. crying out,

  853. I'm calling

  854. on you to

  855. be that

  856. kind as

  857. well.

  858. And so

  859. that's why I

  860. pray every

  861. Sunday when I

  862. end our

  863. prayers together,

  864. I say we

  865. ask these

  866. things not

  867. because we've

  868. earned them

  869. or deserved

  870. them.

  871. Because we

  872. want to be

  873. people like

  874. the Syrophoenician

  875. woman.

  876. We want to

  877. recognize before

  878. God that we

  879. can keep coming

  880. back with

  881. courage and

  882. confidence because

  883. we're not

  884. relying on our

  885. merit.

  886. If you are

  887. or were relying

  888. on your merit,

  889. you might as

  890. well give up

  891. now.

  892. In fact, I

  893. would recommend

  894. that you never

  895. pray again

  896. because you

  897. have nothing

  898. to offer

  899. God.

  900. God.

  901. This woman

  902. knows that.

  903. That's the

  904. basis of

  905. her claim.

  906. What we're

  907. saying when we

  908. pray in Jesus'

  909. name is that

  910. we know we

  911. can't claim

  912. things for

  913. ourselves,

  914. but God is

  915. good and

  916. Jesus is

  917. good.

  918. We know we

  919. haven't earned

  920. anything and

  921. God tells us

  922. he's going to

  923. listen and

  924. hear.

  925. And so what

  926. she's doing

  927. here is she's

  928. appealing to

  929. God's character.

  930. She's asking

  931. God to act on

  932. what he has

  933. done and who

  934. he is, not

  935. what she's

  936. done or who

  937. she is.

  938. And that's the

  939. same thing we

  940. do when we

  941. stay relentless

  942. in prayer.

  943. We're appealing

  944. to God's

  945. character.

  946. That's how we're

  947. able to keep

  948. coming back

  949. month after

  950. month and

  951. week after

  952. week and

  953. day after

  954. day.

  955. We're like

  956. this woman

  957. reminding God

  958. of what he

  959. has promised

  960. in his

  961. word.

  962. We are

  963. coming back

  964. reminding God

  965. of his

  966. great mercy

  967. and love.

  968. I told you

  969. a few weeks

  970. ago about the

  971. importance of

  972. God being

  973. with us.

  974. And I also

  975. shared with you

  976. that as I

  977. prepare every

  978. week to stand

  979. before you and

  980. present God's

  981. word, I ask

  982. him over and

  983. over that he

  984. would be with

  985. me and he'd

  986. also be with

  987. you.

  988. you.

  989. And when I

  990. pray that I

  991. don't say

  992. because we

  993. are such a

  994. great church.

  995. And I don't

  996. say we need

  997. you to be with

  998. us because we

  999. deserve it.

  1000. No, I say we

  1001. need you to be

  1002. with us and you

  1003. should do it

  1004. because Jesus

  1005. made a promise

  1006. in John chapter

    John 14 chapter mention

  1007. 14 that he was

  1008. going to send

  1009. his Holy Spirit

  1010. to be with his

  1011. church.

  1012. And so you

  1013. need to honor

  1014. your promise.

  1015. you need to

  1016. do what you've

  1017. said you were

  1018. going to do.

  1019. It's not because

  1020. we have earned

  1021. it or deserved

  1022. it because you

  1023. have told us

  1024. what you're going

  1025. to do.

  1026. If you're crying

  1027. out to God and

  1028. you're asking him

  1029. for wisdom in

  1030. your life for the

  1031. situations that you

  1032. face that are

  1033. beyond what you

  1034. know how to

  1035. respond to.

  1036. We don't ask

  1037. for wisdom because

  1038. we deserve it or

  1039. have earned it.

  1040. We ask it because

  1041. God made us a

  1042. promise in James

    James 1:5

  1043. chapter 1 verse

  1044. 5 that he would

  1045. give wisdom to

  1046. those who ask

  1047. for it.

  1048. And so like this

  1049. woman appealing to

  1050. God's character and

  1051. his mercy we do

  1052. the same.

1053. God we need you to

  1054. give us mercy because

  1055. you have said you're

  1056. going to do it.

  1057. Honor your promise.

  1058. If you're a parent

  1059. and you're crying out

1060. to God to help you

  1061. as you raise your

  1062. children you can't

  1063. cry out to him

  1064. because you are

  1065. such a great person.

1066. No you cry out to

  1067. him because God has

  1068. told us in Malachi

    Malachi 2 chapter mention

  1069. chapter 2 that the

  1070. heart and desire of

  1071. him is that there

  1072. would be godly

  1073. children who would

  1074. be raised to

  1075. worship him generation

  1076. after generation.

1077. And so you come to

1078. God and you say this

1079. is what you say you

  1080. want and it's not

  1081. going to happen unless

  1082. you help.

  1083. And so I am

  1084. throwing myself on

  1085. your mercy and your

  1086. grace.

  1087. If you're someone who

1088. needs help in work and

1089. school you can come to

1090. God and appeal to his

  1091. character and say you're

  1092. the one in Genesis

    Genesis 1 chapter mention

  1093. chapter 1 and 2 who

  1094. said be fruitful and

  1095. multiply.

1096. And we're not going to

1097. be able to do it unless

  1098. you're with us.

1099. And so we need you to

  1100. honor your promise and

  1101. your character.

1102. We need you to show up

  1103. not because we are

  1104. great but because you

  1105. are.

  1106. God delights in a

  1107. persistent faith that

  1108. throws itself on his

  1109. mercy.

  1110. God delights in the

  1111. persistent faith that

1112. cries out and claims his

  1113. promise and his

  1114. character.

  1115. there's a beautiful

  1116. humble confidence that

  1117. this woman has.

  1118. There's a beautiful

  1119. humble confidence that

  1120. comes when we see

  1121. ourselves rightly and

  1122. we see God rightly.

  1123. The humility comes from

  1124. seeing ourselves rightly.

  1125. The confidence comes

  1126. from seeing God rightly.

  1127. We understand our

1128. misery and our sin as we

  1129. confessed earlier this

  1130. morning and we

  1131. understand God's grace.

  1132. There's a principle in

  1133. James chapter 4, 1

    James 4 chapter mention

1134. Peter 5 that tells us

  1135. God opposes the proud

1136. but gives grace to the

  1137. humble.

  1138. Great faith is

  1139. persistent.

  1140. Great faith is

  1141. humble.

  1142. And that's where God

  1143. has promised to show

1144. up and do his work.

  1145. That's what we're about

1146. to sing together on page

  1147. 10.

  1148. You'll see our closing

  1149. hymn before the throne

  1150. of God above.

  1151. And we're singing about

1152. the fact that our plea is

  1153. not on anything we

1154. deserve or earn but on

  1155. God's grace.

  1156. Verse 1, I have a

  1157. strong, a perfect plea

  1158. because I have a great

  1159. high priest whose name

  1160. is love, whoever lives

  1161. and pleads for me.

1162. And then in the second

1163. verse we praise God that

1164. we're basing this not on

1165. our merit but on his

  1166. grace.

1167. When Satan tempts me to

1168. despair and tells me of

1169. the guilt within, upward I

1170. look and see him there

1171. who made an end to all

  1172. my sin.

  1173. It's not me, it's God's

  1174. grace that gives me

  1175. confidence and hope.

1176. How do we have great

  1177. faith?

  1178. We keep asking.

1179. And we keep asking not

1180. because we deserve it but

  1181. because God is good.

  1182. He delights to show

1183. mercy to those who know

  1184. that they need it.

  1185. He delights to show

1186. mercy to you and me.

  1187. Let's pray.

1188. Our Father in heaven, we

1189. praise you and we thank

1190. you that we can come and

1191. speak to you like this

  1192. woman.

1193. We ask that you would

1194. give us great faith that

  1195. we would never, never,

  1196. never give up.

1197. and that we're to come

  1198. from our confidence not

1199. in ourselves but in you

  1200. and in your grace.

1201. It's with that heart that

1202. we ask all of these

  1203. things in Jesus' name.

  1204. Amen.

1205. I invite you to stand.

  1206. Amen.

  1207. Amen.

  1208. Amen.

  1209. Amen.
