  1. You may be seated.

  2. Good morning.

  3. My name's Matthew Capone, and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church,

  4. and it's my joy to bring God's Word to you today.

  5. A special welcome if you're new or visiting with us.

  6. We're glad that you're here, and we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats,

  7. but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  8. And as we follow Jesus together, we become convinced there's no one so good.

  9. They don't need God's grace.

  10. And no one's so bad that they can't have it, which is why we come back week after week

  11. to hear what God has to say to us in His Word, because we believe He has something to say to everyone.

  12. We're continuing our series in the Gospel of Mark.

  13. You'll remember that the Gospels tell the story of Jesus in His life and His death and His resurrection.

  14. And over the last few weeks, we've been looking at this theme or topic of faith,

  15. what it looks like to have faith versus unbelief.

  16. And this morning, in a sense, we're continuing that theme as this passage presents to us the question

  17. of how God changes us to make us look more and more like Jesus.

  18. Maybe you're frustrated with growth in your life.

  19. You feel like you should know more and do more and be more,

  20. and you wonder why it's so slow and hard.

  21. Maybe you're satisfied, and you don't think there's much that needs to be changed.

  22. Maybe there's a little bit of polishing that needs to happen,

  23. but for the most part, you consider yourself to be a finished product,

  24. even though you might not say it out loud.

  25. Either way, this passage speaks to our desire and confusion and frustration with change

  26. as Jesus performs another healing.

  27. And so I'm going to invite you to turn with me now to Mark 8, starting at verse 22.

  28. You can turn in your worship guide.

  29. You can turn on your phone.

  30. You can turn in your Bible.

  31. No matter where you turn, remember that this is God's Word.

  32. And God tells us that His Word is more precious than gold, even the finest gold,

  33. and it's sweeter than honey, even honey that comes straight from the honeycomb.

  34. And so that's why we read now Mark 8, starting at verse 22.

  35. And they came to Bethsaida, and some people brought to him a blind man and begged him to touch him.

  36. And he took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the village.

  37. And when he had spit on his eyes and laid his hands on him, he asked him,

  38. Do you see anything?

  39. Verse 24.

  40. And he looked up and said, I see people, but they look like trees walking.

  41. Then Jesus laid his hands on his eyes again, and he opened his eyes.

  42. His sight was restored, and he saw everything clearly.

  43. And he sent him to his home, saying, Do not even enter the village.

  44. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's Word.

  45. Our Father in Heaven, we thank you again that you are the ultimate example of a good father.

  46. Father, you're the reason we know what a good father looks like,

  47. and you're the reason we hurt when we see some fall short.

  48. We thank you that like a good father, you speak to us.

  49. You explain things to us.

  50. You help us understand.

  51. You coach us and direct us and guide us and correct us.

  52. We ask that you would do that this morning by your Word,

  53. that you would open it up to us.

  54. You would clear our minds.

  55. You'd soften our hearts, that you would speak to us in words that are simple enough for us to understand,

  56. that we would see and believe everything that's written about you and your Word.

  57. Most of all, we ask that you would help us to see Jesus,

  58. and as we see him, you would change us.

  59. We ask these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

  60. Amen.

  61. Amen.

  62. So, right about now, I'm hitting my three-year anniversary of being a homeowner.

  63. Technically, that happened in May, but I didn't move in until the very end of June,

  64. so I'm coming up on that point, and it's actually going to be a record for me

  65. because I've never lived anywhere longer than three years in specific residence as an adult,

  66. so I'm looking to break that next month, coming up very quickly.

  67. And as you may know, if you're a homeowner, I've become very familiar with Home Depot.

  68. And there's one aisle on Home Depot that I'm pretty convinced I've spent more time on than any other aisle,

  69. and that's where all the light bulbs are.

  70. Because, of course, I have the challenge over three years.

  71. Many lights go out, and so I have to show up to Home Depot taking with me the old, burnt-out light,

  72. trying to read the labels on whatever it is that I'm replacing,

  73. figuring out what's the highest wattage that I can go to.

  74. Do I want soft white or daylight?

  75. Which I don't even know what that means, so I just guess.

  76. But there's also the different types of light bulbs that I have to choose between.

  77. There's various lights in my house that are three-way lights,

  78. so I have to make sure I have the right type or things will go wrong.

  79. There's other lights where it doesn't matter. It's either on or off.

  80. And then I have the—I haven't had many of these. I think I've had one, the dimmer light.

  81. And it turns out you have to spy a special bulb for that.

  82. You can't just throw anything in.

  83. If you do, I believe you'll hear kind of a staticky sound.

  84. Don't ask me how I know that.

  85. There are two kinds of lights in a sense.

  86. There's the on-off.

  87. Once, they're either one way or the other.

  88. And there's the dimmer. They exist in degrees.

  89. And that's actually true for many things in our lives.

  90. There are things that are only on and off.

  91. So you are either an American citizen or you're not.

  92. You are either married or you're not.

  93. You are either a legal adult or a minor.

  94. Either you have a degree or you don't.

  95. Either you graduated or you didn't.

  96. Either you're a Christian or you're not.

  97. Either you're baptized or you are unbaptized.

  98. These are things that don't exist in degrees.

  99. You cannot be half married.

  100. You cannot be sort of an American citizen.

  101. There are other things in this life that exist in degrees.

  102. So once you're married, you can grow in understanding and knowing and loving your spouse.

  103. That's something that can change over time.

  104. Maybe you can be half retired.

  105. You've given up full-time work, but you have a part-time job now.

  106. I've learned since being in a military community that you can have percentages assigned to your disability.

  107. Maybe you're only 30% disabled.

  108. Maybe you're 80% disabled.

  109. Same thing can happen with ethnicity.

  110. I have an Italian name, which I'm sure you could guess by my dark complexion.

  111. But I'm actually only an eighth Italian.

  112. And unless I do what my uncle did and marry an Italian, that's only going to get diluted over time.

  113. In other words, there are stages to growth and understanding.

  114. That's going to help us understand the problem that we come up against the challenge in this passage,

  115. which is, why does Jesus' healing not work the first time?

  116. Jesus has two stages as he addresses this man.

  117. Stage 1, verses 23 and 24.

  118. Jesus takes this blind man aside and he asks him,

  119. Do you see anything?

  120. And it turns out the healing sort of worked.

  121. Verse 24, I see people, but they look like trees, walking.

  122. So Jesus has to come back a second time because the first treatment apparently wasn't effective enough

  123. and touch this man's eyes again.

  124. Why is it that Jesus does not heal this man's eyes fully once and for all in one stage with one touch?

  125. Is it because Jesus lacks power?

  126. Is it because Jesus is new to this kind of treatment?

  127. You know, he's experienced with casting out demons.

  128. He's just not experienced with the spittle thing.

  129. You notice in the second time he does it, he doesn't spit.

  130. So maybe it was the spittle that got in the way.

  131. Do you think that's the problem with what Jesus is doing here?

  132. Maybe it's lack of experience, lack of power.

  133. No.

  134. No.

  135. In Mark chapter 5, Jesus raised Jairus' daughter from the dead.

    Mark 5 chapter mention

  136. This is so much easier and simpler than bringing someone who is dead and making them alive again.

  137. The problem is not that Jesus is not powerful enough or experienced enough.

  138. Jesus in this passage is using a physical healing to teach us a spiritual lesson.

  139. Jesus is using a physical healing to teach a spiritual lesson.

  140. Now, you might wonder if I'm just spiritualizing this passage because that makes it easy to preach.

  141. And the answer is no.

  142. We know based on the broader context of this section that this is what Jesus is doing.

  143. Remember, we've seen this theme of seeing over and over again.

  144. Jesus himself spiritualizes the idea of seeing in chapter 8, verse 18.

  145. This was last week.

  146. He said,

  147. Having eyes do you not see and having ears do you not hear?

  148. Jesus was not asking the disciples if they needed to get glasses.

  149. He was asking them about their spiritual understanding.

  150. And remember, they were blinded in a sense.

  151. They had seen Jesus feed the 5,000.

  152. They had seen him feed the 4,000.

  153. And they were still worried about whether they would have enough to eat.

  154. Jesus is saying,

  155. Can't you see metaphorically the things that are right in front of you?

  156. And now he gives us this healing to help us understand

  157. what it looks like for God to change us,

  158. to give us sight in this life.

  159. It is not a coincidence that this passage comes immediately after

  160. the story where Jesus asks about their sight.

  161. What he is telling them,

  162. what he is doing is giving them a lesson

  163. that when it comes to spiritual sight,

  164. when it comes to understanding God and his character,

  165. when it comes to growing in our trust and love and affection for him,

  166. it is a dimmer switch,

  167. not an on and off switch.

  168. It's a dimmer switch,

  169. not an on and off switch.

  170. We're going to have another example next week of this same problem.

  171. Peter is going to confess Christ as the Messiah.

  172. And then he's going to rebuke Jesus for talking about suffering.

  173. It's a dimmer switch,

  174. not an on and off switch.

  175. Then Jesus comes as this model of humility, right?

  176. And in chapter nine,

  177. Jesus has been serving them this whole time

  178. and they start having an argument about

  179. who is going to be the greatest.

  180. They see and they don't see.

  181. Jesus tells them, chapter nine,

  182. if anyone would be first,

  183. he must be last of all and servant of all.

  184. And then because they took that lesson to heart

  185. and internalized it,

  186. in chapter 10,

  187. James and John request to sit at Jesus' left

  188. and his right hand in the kingdom.

  189. That was a joke.

  190. They don't internalize it.

  191. They don't understand it.

  192. They don't get it.

  193. Jesus has told them about humility

  194. and in the next chapter,

  195. they're showing off their pride.

  196. The disciples see Jesus and they don't see Jesus.

  197. They know Jesus and they don't know him.

  198. They sort of get it and they also sort of do not get it.

  199. Their vision is distorted.

  200. We might say they see people,

  201. but they look like trees walking.

  202. They are growing slowly in their understanding.

  203. The lesson is that true sight of Jesus

  204. comes slowly and progressively.

  205. True sight of Jesus comes slowly and progressively.

  206. Chapter eight,

  207. they don't understand that Jesus has come to suffer.

  208. That appears to be a surprise for them.

  209. Chapter 10,

  210. Jesus has to help them understand

  211. that he has come not to be served,

  212. but to serve.

  213. They don't understand that Jesus has not come

  214. with an earthly political vision.

  215. They don't understand that he hasn't come

  216. for power and influence right now.

  217. Seeing Jesus,

  218. spiritual understanding,

  219. knowing God comes gradually,

  220. incompletely.

  221. We're often confused.

  222. We are like this man who experiences this healing.

  223. We see in part,

  224. but not in full.

  225. We see outlines,

  226. but not details.

  227. Our vision and our sight

  228. is not what we want.

  229. The same thing is true for us.

  230. We see Jesus,

  231. but we don't see him.

  232. Maybe you see Jesus as king,

  233. but it's all about politics in the here and now.

  234. Maybe it's not about primarily worshiping

  235. and obeying and loving God,

  236. but instead it's been shrunk

  237. to these very specific public policy agendas

  238. and political candidates.

  239. That for you is the sum total

  240. of what it means for Jesus to be king.

  241. Maybe Jesus as provider,

  242. and he is,

  243. but you've forgotten that he blesses

  244. for us to be a blessing,

  245. that what he told Abraham is still true,

  246. that we're meant to spread God's love

  247. and goodness throughout the world.

  248. Maybe you know that Jesus calls you,

  249. but deep down you think that Jesus has called you

  250. to more and greater power and influence.

  251. But Jesus tells us

  252. that he's called us to deny ourselves,

  253. take up our cross,

  254. and follow him.

  255. We see him,

  256. but we don't see him.

  257. Without God's intervention,

  258. we do not naturally understand

  259. the upside down,

  260. counterintuitive nature of Jesus

  261. and his purposes

  262. and his mission

  263. and his kingdom.

  264. We know the right words,

  265. but we sing the wrong tune.

  266. We know the right words,

  267. but we sing the right tune,

  268. sing the wrong tune.

  269. Many people think

  270. that Christianity

  271. is sort of like

  272. going under LASIK surgery.

  273. You go,

  274. you find an eye doctor,

  275. they perform this operation on you,

  276. maybe there's a little bit of waiting time,

  277. but then you need no glasses.

  278. Everything is as if

  279. your vision was perfect.

  280. And so you become a Christian

  281. and some people teach this.

  282. You expect to have this

  283. just radical transformation

  284. in every area of your life.

  285. You no longer struggle with sin.

  286. Things that were addictions for you

  287. and habits that pulled you down

  288. suddenly lose all power in your life.

  289. Now don't hear what I'm not saying.

  290. There are times when God does bring

  291. true, radical, deep transformation

  292. into people's lives.

  293. And that is not

  294. the normative expectation

  295. of the Christian life.

  296. Sanctification,

  297. growing in holiness,

  298. is a slow,

  299. long-term,

  300. lifelong process.

  301. It is not LASIK surgery.

  302. Becoming a Christian,

  303. following Jesus,

  304. is a long and slow

  305. recovery and rehabilitation.

  306. It is growing in our vision

  307. and our sight

  308. year by year,

  309. day by day,

  310. month by month.

  311. It is understanding

  312. more and more

  313. over a long period of time.

  314. Now there's a couple ways

  315. to take this passage.

  316. Some people take this

  317. as a rebuke

  318. from Jesus to the disciples.

  319. He asked them in verse 18,

  320. can't you see yet?

  321. And now he gives them this picture

  322. of someone who sees

  323. but doesn't see.

  324. Now we could take it in that way.

  325. That's legitimate.

  326. I don't know if I'd put it

  327. as a rebuke

  328. as much as a description

  329. and an explanation.

  330. You don't know

  331. as much as you think you do.

  332. You see people,

  333. but they look like trees.

  334. You have still

  335. so far

  336. to go.

  337. There's also another way

  338. to take this

  339. which is as a word

  340. of encouragement.

  341. The disciples

  342. are stumbling along.

  343. They don't see

  344. as much as they should.

  345. They don't understand

  346. as much as they need to.

  347. Like us,

  348. they're still figuring it out.

  349. Like us,

  350. they're still going

  351. through a process.

  352. Like us,

  353. there are things

  354. that they wish

  355. that they knew

  356. and understand

  357. and believed

  358. and practiced

  359. more and more.

  360. Jesus does not

  361. give up on them.

  362. Jesus has not

  363. given up on us.

  364. Our sight

  365. is imperfect.

  366. Our hope

  367. is not in that

  368. but the one

  369. who heals it.

  370. Our sight

  371. is imperfect.

  372. Our hope

  373. is not in that

  374. but in the one

  375. who heals it.

  376. there's a realistic

  377. expectation here

  378. for discipleship.

  379. There's an encouragement

  380. that even if

  381. your understanding

  382. is foggy,

  383. Jesus

  384. still pursues

  385. and knows

  386. and loves

  387. and transforms you.

  388. Jesus

  389. is still

  390. at work.

  391. I've told you

  392. many times

  393. throughout Mark

  394. the words

  395. of one of my professors

  396. which is this,

  397. the disciples

  398. got almost

  399. everything wrong

  400. and they got

  401. one thing

  402. right.

  403. They kept

  404. following

  405. Jesus.

  406. The disciples'

  407. sight is foggy

  408. and unclear

  409. and mistaken

  410. and they're

  411. with

  412. Jesus.

  413. that reminds

  414. us

  415. that the news

  416. of a slow

  417. and long

  418. recovery

  419. is discouraging

  420. unless there's

  421. hope for healing.

  422. The news

  423. of a slow

  424. and long

  425. recovery

  426. is discouraging

  427. unless there's

  428. a hope

  429. for healing.

  430. Thankfully

  431. this passage

  432. points out

  433. not only

  434. the fact

  435. that our

  436. vision is

  437. incomplete

  438. that we don't

  439. understand

  440. what we need

  441. to but it

  442. also shows

  443. us

  444. Jesus

  445. here

  446. as the

  447. great

  448. healer.

  449. Look with

  450. me

  451. verse 23.

  452. This man

  453. has been

  454. brought

  455. by his

  456. friends

  457. and what

  458. does

  459. Jesus

  460. do?

  461. Similar

  462. to the

  463. previous

  464. healing

  465. he

  466. takes

  467. this

  468. man

  469. by the

  470. hand.

  471. It's a

  472. Bible

  473. trivia for

  474. you.

  475. When

  476. is the

  477. one

  478. time

  479. when

  480. Jesus

  481. starts

  482. holding

  483. hands

  484. with

  485. another

  486. man?

  487. This

  488. is it.

  489. Jesus

  490. takes

  491. him

  492. by the

  493. hand

  494. by the

  495. way

  496. this is

  497. common

  498. practice

  499. in the

  500. Middle

  501. East

  502. and leads

  503. him away

  504. tenderly,

  505. gently,

  506. personally.

  507. Just like

  508. in the

  509. previous

  510. healing,

  511. Jesus

  512. takes

  513. him to

  514. a

  515. private

  516. place.

  517. He's

  518. not

  519. putting

  520. on a

  521. show

  522. for

  523. other

  524. people

  525. to see

  526. how

  527. great

  528. and how

  529. powerful

  530. he is.

  531. He has

  532. this

  533. spitting

  534. and touching

  535. ritual

  536. which is

  537. similar to

  538. what we

  539. saw with

  540. the man

  541. who is

  542. mute

  543. and deaf.

  544. He is

  545. speaking

  546. to this

  547. man in

  548. a way

  549. that he

  550. can

  551. understand.

  552. He's

  553. communicating

  554. in this

  555. cultural

  556. form

  557. that will

  558. help this

  559. man know

  560. what it

  561. is that

  562. Jesus

  563. is doing.

  564. He meets

  565. this man

  566. as an

  567. individual

  568. in real

  569. time,

  570. in real

  571. space,

  572. touching

  573. him,

  574. caring

  575. about

  576. him,

  577. and meeting

  578. him there

  579. to bring

  580. him healing

  581. in his

  582. sight.

  583. Brothers

  584. and sisters,

  585. we need

  586. miraculous

  587. healing

  588. and

  589. intervention

  590. to be

  591. able to

  592. understand

  593. anything

  594. of

  595. spiritual

  596. value

  597. in this

  598. life.

  599. And

  600. Jesus

  601. comes

  602. personally

  603. and

  604. specifically

  605. and

  606. individually

  607. just like

  608. he did

  609. before.

  610. Jesus

  611. comes to

  612. you

  613. specifically,

  614. individually,

  615. clearly,

  616. personally.

  617. You

  618. may have

  619. noticed

  620. on page

  621. six,

  622. excuse

  623. me,

  624. page

  625. seven

  626. of your

  627. worship

  628. guide.

  629. I have

  630. this quote

  631. for you

  632. on the

  633. left.

  634. Because

  635. situations

  636. and persons

  637. come unscripted,

  638. fluid,

  639. and unpredictable,

  640. Jesus engages

  641. each person

  642. and situation

  643. in a

  644. personalized

  645. way.

  646. It is

  647. no truism

  648. to say

  649. that Jesus

  650. really does

  651. meet you

  652. where you

  653. are,

  654. always.

  655. Scripture

  656. does the

  657. same.

  658. No

  659. boilerplate,

  660. the Holy

  661. Spirit

  662. makes

  663. words

  664. personal.

  665. Jesus

  666. comes

  667. and meets

  668. you

  669. one-on-one

  670. and gives

  671. you sight

  672. in the

  673. same way

  674. that he

  675. did for

  676. this man.

  677. Jesus

  678. has not

  679. given up

  680. on you

  681. in the

  682. midst

  683. of your

  684. confusion

  685. and mistakes

  686. and stumbling

  687. around.

  688. Jesus

  689. has not

  690. abandoned

  691. you because

  692. you can't

  693. see everything

  694. as

  695. correctly

  696. as you

  697. should.

  698. Instead,

  699. Jesus

  700. comes as

  701. he did

  702. as a

  703. man on

  704. this

  705. earth

  706. and he

  707. meets

  708. you

  709. in the

  710. midst

  711. of your

  712. sin

  713. and confusion

  714. and despair

  715. and he

  716. touches

  717. you like

  718. he touched

  719. this man.

  720. Romans

    Romans 5:8

  721. chapter 5

  722. verse 8

  723. tells us

  724. that while

  725. we were

  726. still

  727. sinners,

  728. Christ

  729. died for

  730. us.

  731. He

  732. didn't

  733. wait

  734. until we

  735. had

  736. figured

  737. everything

  738. out

  739. and fixed

  740. ourselves

  741. before he

  742. showed up

  743. on this

  744. earth.

  745. He

  746. didn't

  747. wait

  748. until you

  749. had

  750. figured

  751. everything

  752. out

  753. and fixed

  754. yourself

  755. before he

  756. showed up

  757. in your

  758. life.

  759. How is

  760. it that we

  761. change?

  762. God

  763. changes us

  764. slowly,

  765. gradually,

  766. progressively

  767. and he

  768. changes us

  769. by Jesus'

  770. personal touch

  771. in our

  772. lives.

  773. Change

  774. is a

  775. result of

  776. a personal

  777. relationship

  778. with Jesus.

  779. Change

  780. is a

  781. result of

  782. God's

  783. intimate

  784. and personal

  785. work in

  786. your life.

  787. As you

  788. live your

  789. life,

  790. Jesus is

  791. touching

  792. your eyes

  793. with

  794. circumstances,

  795. with

  796. disappointments,

  797. with

  798. joys,

  799. with

  800. sufferings.

  801. That's

  802. one question

  803. you can

  804. ask as

  805. you encounter

  806. everything that

  807. God presents

  808. in your way

  809. this week.

  810. how is

  811. this helping

  812. my sight?

  813. How is

  814. God using

  815. this to

  816. help me

  817. see clearly

  818. little by

  819. little,

  820. step by

  821. step?

  822. Jesus

  823. asks,

  824. and we'll

  825. close with

  826. this,

  827. this important

  828. question in

  829. verse 23,

  830. the very

  831. end,

  832. do you

  833. see anything?

  834. do you

  835. see anything?

  836. That's the

  837. question for

  838. us from

  839. this passage

  840. this morning.

  841. Do you

  842. see anything?

  843. The answer

  844. is yes

  845. and no.

  846. We see,

  847. but we don't

  848. see.

  849. We know,

  850. but we don't

  851. know.

  852. Like the

  853. disciples,

  854. incomplete,

  855. flawed,

  856. confused.

  857. Jesus,

  858. healing,

  859. restoring,

  860. growing us

  861. throughout our

  862. lives.

  863. we have

  864. hope because

  865. Jesus heals.

  866. That's how we

  867. respond to

  868. him.

  869. Who is

  870. Jesus?

  871. He is the

  872. one who

  873. comes and

  874. changes little

  875. by little

  876. over time.

  877. And so we

  878. keep following

  879. him.

  880. Let's pray.

  881. Our

  882. Father in

  883. heaven,

  884. we thank

  885. you for

  886. the encouragement

  887. of this

  888. passage.

  889. That no

  890. matter our

  891. mistakes,

  892. our

  893. failures,

  894. our

  895. misunderstandings,

  896. you come

  897. and you

  898. meet us

  899. where we

  900. are in

  901. our lives.

  902. You

  903. arrange

  904. events and

  905. circumstances

  906. and people

  907. to give us

  908. the sight and

  909. understanding

  910. that we

  911. need.

  912. We ask

  913. that you

  914. would do

  915. that this

  916. week,

  917. that you

  918. would grow

  919. our knowledge

  920. of you,

  921. that we

  922. would see

  923. Jesus

  924. clearly more

  925. and more.

  926. We would

  927. live in

  928. light of

  929. you and

  930. your love

  931. for us.

  932. We ask

  933. these things

  934. in Jesus'

  935. name.

  936. Amen.

  937. Amen.
