  1. This morning, we're going to welcome the Reverend Andrew Goisweta to our pulpit.

  2. Andrew is the former assistant pastor at a Presbyterian church in Traveler's Rest, South Carolina,

  3. and now serves as the campus minister for Reformed University Fellowship at Davidson College.

  4. And Andrew's not just simply a guest preacher, he's actually had some influence on our church,

  5. so I'm going to tell you a couple of stories.

  6. I first met Andrew in 2008 as a student.

  7. We were both students at Davidson College, and Andrew went ahead of me to Covenant Seminary.

  8. Andrew started Covenant in St. Louis in the summer of 2012.

  9. And July 3rd, 2012, was a Sunday.

  10. July 4th, 2012, Andrew walked over from his apartment on campus,

  11. and he scanned in his worship guide from the worship service the previous Sunday and emailed it to me.

  12. You might be wondering, why was he sending you a worship guide?

  13. Well, he wanted me to see what this church was doing,

  14. which is that they had these interesting worship guides where they had a sidebar explanation of what was happening in the worship service.

  15. And I thought, that is so cool.

  16. If I'm ever leading a church, we have to do that.

  17. So nine years later, it finally happened last year in 2021.

  18. So if you can either thank or insult Andrew depending on your feelings about the worship guide, it's his fault.

  19. The other thing that's Andrew's fault is, so that was 2012.

  20. And then in 2014, I actually started at Covenant Seminary.

  21. And what I think none of you know is this Bible that I use every Sunday to preach from was a gift from Andrew as soon as I arrived in seminary.

  22. And he gave it to me partially to show me the importance of having a Bible.

  23. What's neat about this Bible is it can stay open on any page of the Bible, including Genesis 1.

  24. So it's a preaching Bible.

  25. And he told me, it's really important when you preach.

  26. You've got to always have the Bible in your hand so people know where the authority comes from.

  27. So that's some influence.

  28. It has this inscription in the front that says,

  29. For my dear friend, Matthew Capone, June 2, 2014, from Andrew Coisweta, Proverbs 30, verse 5.

    Proverbs 30:5

  30. And Proverbs 30, verse 5 says this,

    Proverbs 30:5

  31. Every word of God proves true.

  32. He is a shield to those who take refuge in him.

  33. Which is fitting because Andrew's going to come now and bring us God's word.

  34. So, Andrew, we're delighted to have you.

  35. Thank you.

  36. Thank you.

  37. Matthew, for that kind introduction.

  38. It is great to be with you this morning.

  39. Joined by my wife, Amanda.

  40. This is actually my second time worshiping with y'all.

  41. Even though it's my first time preaching for you, it's my second time worshiping here.

  42. The first time was several years ago at Matthew's installation service.

  43. And what a joy that was to be here for that special occasion and to worship the Lord that Sunday morning, that Lord's Day morning.

  44. So, it's a delight and a privilege to be able to preach God's word for you this morning.

  45. I want to thank Matthew and the elders for having me.

  46. My sole regret in offering to preach for Matthew this morning was that I wouldn't get to hear him preach this morning.

  47. As y'all know very well, Matthew is quite the gifted preacher and has been for very many years.

  48. I know that he has served y'all well through those preaching gifts.

  49. But even more importantly, Matthew is a good man.

  50. And I'm sure you've learned that as well.

  51. He did not mention this, but he was actually the best man in my wedding and one of my dearest friends for very many years.

  52. So, it's a privilege to preach in his stead this morning.

  53. If you have a copy of God's word, I'd invite you to turn with me to John chapter 21.

    John 21 chapter mention

  54. We're going to be looking at verses 4 through 19 this morning.

  55. And we are jumping into the very end of this gospel account.

  56. We're going to be looking at the very famous passage of Jesus restoring Peter.

  57. And as we prepare to read God's word, I want to ask you this.

  58. Have you noticed how very many TV shows these days, they begin with the two words, previously on.

  59. And then they launch into a recap.

  60. In fact, Matthew and Amanda and I were watching a TV show last night and it did the very same thing.

  61. It started with previously on.

  62. And it helps orient you to where you are in the story.

  63. So, as we're jumping into the very end of John chapter 1, I want to begin by saying,

    John 1 chapter mention

  64. previously on John's gospel, Jesus has been crucified.

  65. He's been buried in the tomb in Jerusalem.

  66. He remained there for three days.

  67. And on the third day, he has risen again to new life.

  68. And he appeared to many of his disciples on multiple occasions.

  69. Well, our story begins more than a week after those events.

  70. No longer are we in Jerusalem, but we are up in the north in Galilee.

  71. And this story begins after Jesus' disciples have been fishing all night and they've caught nothing.

  72. So, that's where our story begins early the next morning.

  73. So, would you please give your attention to the reading of God's word?

  74. This is John chapter 21, verses 4 through 19.

    John 21:4–19

  75. Just as day was breaking, Jesus stood on the shore, yet the disciples did not know that it was Jesus.

  76. Jesus said to them,

  77. Children, do you have any fish?

  78. They answered him,

  79. No.

  80. He said to them,

  81. Cast the net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.

  82. So, they cast it.

  83. And now, they were not able to haul it in because of the quantity of fish.

  84. That disciple whom Jesus loved therefore said to Peter,

  85. It is the Lord.

  86. When Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord,

  87. he put on his outer garment, for he was stripped for work,

  88. and threw himself into the sea.

  89. The other disciples came in the boat,

  90. dragging the net full of fish,

  91. for they were not far from the land, but about a hundred yards off.

  92. When they got out on land,

  93. they saw a charcoal fire in place,

  94. with some fish laid out on it,

  95. and bread.

  96. Jesus said to them,

  97. Bring some of the fish that you have just caught.

  98. So, Simon Peter went aboard and hauled the net ashore,

  99. full of large fish,

  100. 153 of them.

  101. And although there were so many,

  102. the net was not torn.

  103. Jesus said to them,

  104. Come and have breakfast.

  105. Now, none of the disciples dared ask him,

  106. Who are you?

  107. They knew it was the Lord.

  108. Jesus came and took the bread and gave it to them,

  109. and so with the fish.

  110. This was now the third time that Jesus was revealed to the disciples

  111. after he was raised from the dead.

  112. When they had finished breakfast,

  113. Jesus said to Simon Peter,

  114. Simon, son of John,

  115. do you love me more than these?

  116. He said to him,

  117. Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.

  118. He said to him,

  119. Feed my lambs.

  120. He said to him a second time,

  121. Simon, son of John,

  122. do you love me?

  123. He said to him,

  124. Yes, Lord, you know that I love you.

  125. He said to him,

  126. Tend my sheep.

  127. He said to him the third time,

  128. Simon, son of John,

  129. do you love me?

  130. Peter was grieved

  131. because he said to him the third time,

  132. Do you love me?

  133. And he said to him,

  134. Lord, you know everything.

  135. You know that I love you.

  136. Jesus said to him,

  137. Feed my sheep.

  138. Truly, truly, I say to you,

  139. when you were young,

  140. you used to dress yourself

  141. and walk wherever you wanted.

  142. But when you are old,

  143. you will stretch out your hands

  144. and another will dress you

  145. and carry you

  146. where you do not want to go.

  147. This he said to show

  148. by what kind of death

  149. he was to glorify God.

  150. And after saying this,

  151. he said to him,

  152. Follow me.

  153. Every word of God

  154. proves true.

  155. He's a shield to those

  156. who take refuge in him.

  157. Would you pray with me?

  158. Father in heaven,

  159. would you grant us this morning

  160. eyes to see

  161. and ears to hear

  162. glorious things

  163. spoken of you

  164. in your word.

  165. We ask this

  166. in the powerful name of Jesus,

  167. our Lord and Savior.

  168. Amen.

  169. Amen.

  170. Now,

  171. I don't know if

  172. Pastor Matthew

  173. does this

  174. when he preaches,

  175. but a lot of times

  176. I will preach

  177. and I'll save

  178. the main point,

  179. the big idea

  180. to the very end

  181. of the sermon.

  182. Not this morning.

  183. This morning

  184. I am too excited

  185. and this is too important

  186. for you to miss.

  187. So here it is.

  188. Here's the big picture,

  189. the big idea

  190. from this morning's passage.

  191. In fact,

  192. it's right there

  193. printed in your bulletin.

  194. God's grace

  195. is bigger

  196. than our biggest failures.

  197. Can I say that again?

  198. God's grace

  199. is bigger

  200. than our biggest

  201. failures.

  202. You know,

  203. that's the message

  204. of all of Scripture

  205. and in particular

  206. it's the message

  207. of this morning's passage.

  208. And as we dig

  209. into this story

  210. that we just read,

  211. let me ask you this.

  212. What's been

  213. your biggest failure

  214. from this past week?

  215. Take a second.

  216. Think over this last week.

  217. Perhaps

  218. it was a sharp word

  219. spoken out of anger

  220. and frustration

  221. to a child,

  222. to a spouse,

  223. to a parent.

  224. Maybe it was

  225. a show that you watched

  226. or a website you visited

  227. that you know

  228. you had no business visiting.

  229. Maybe it was

  230. a word of gossip

  231. or slander

  232. where you highlighted

  233. someone else's failures

  234. instead of covering

  235. over them

  236. in love.

  237. What's been

  238. your biggest failure

  239. from this past week?

  240. Maybe you're sitting here

  241. this morning

  242. and you're thinking,

  243. well, shoot,

  244. I've had a pretty good week

  245. this week.

  246. I haven't had

  247. big failures.

  248. Well, if that's you,

  249. let me ask you this.

  250. What's your biggest failure

  251. from the past month

  252. or the past year

  253. or your entire life?

  254. If you have read

  255. any of the four Gospels,

  256. Matthew, Mark, Luke, or John,

  257. then you already know

  258. what Peter's biggest failure was,

  259. don't you?

  260. Peter's biggest failure

  261. was denying Jesus

  262. three times,

  263. just mere hours,

  264. maybe even minutes,

  265. since promising to Jesus

  266. that he wouldn't.

  267. Now, you and I,

  268. we may have failed

  269. pretty spectacularly

  270. this week

  271. or this month

  272. or this year

  273. or in our lives,

  274. but not quite like Peter,

  275. not like this.

  276. And yet,

  277. look at that very last verse

  278. that we just read together,

  279. verse 19.

  280. Jesus,

  281. even in the aftermath

  282. of Peter's biggest failure,

  283. Jesus turns to him

  284. and says,

  285. follow me.

  286. In other words,

  287. Jesus doesn't discard Peter

  288. even after his biggest failure.

  289. He doesn't discard Peter.

  290. In fact,

  291. he beckons Peter

  292. to himself.

  293. If God's grace

  294. is bigger

  295. than Peter's biggest failure,

  296. then it's bigger

  297. than our biggest failures too.

  298. And what this story

  299. highlights for us,

  300. what it shows us,

  301. is just how this grace,

  302. this huge grace,

  303. comes home to us.

  304. And it does so

  305. in three ways.

  306. Through the grace

  307. of presence,

  308. the grace of place,

  309. and the grace

  310. of persistence.

  311. So let's begin

  312. with the grace

  313. of presence.

  314. Have you noticed

  315. how many protagonists,

  316. how many heroes,

  317. main characters

  318. in books or movies

  319. have particular

  320. calling cards?

  321. These distinct things

  322. that they do

  323. or they say

  324. that lets everyone,

  325. including the reader

  326. or the viewer,

  327. know that they're there?

  328. I mean,

  329. think about it.

  330. Who says,

  331. elementary,

  332. my dear Watson?

  333. Everyone knows

  334. that's Sherlock Holmes,

  335. right?

  336. Or,

  337. I'll be back.

  338. We all know

  339. who that is,

  340. right?

  341. Or,

  342. to infinity

  343. and beyond.

  344. Like,

  345. we can't help

  346. but know

  347. who exactly

  348. is talking to us

  349. with those

  350. distinct calling cards.

  351. Well,

  352. Jesus has a distinct

  353. calling card too.

  354. Did you catch it

  355. from this morning's story?

  356. Look back with me

  357. at the first couple

  358. of verses,

  359. verses 4 through 6.

  360. The text says,

  361. God's word says,

  362. that just as day

  363. was breaking,

  364. Jesus stood on the shore,

  365. yet the disciples

  366. did not know

  367. that it was Jesus.

  368. Jesus said to them,

  369. children,

  370. do you have any fish?

  371. They answered him,

  372. no.

  373. In verse 6,

  374. he said to them,

  375. cast the net

  376. on the right side

  377. of the boat

  378. and you will find some.

  379. So they cast it

  380. and now they were not

  381. able to haul it in

  382. because of

  383. the quantity

  384. of fish.

  385. Okay,

  386. so did you catch it?

  387. What is Jesus'

  388. calling card?

  389. It's him

  390. telling his disciples

  391. after a really

  392. poor night of fishing

  393. to cast the net

  394. and then providing them

  395. with this miraculous,

  396. this supernatural

  397. catch

  398. of fish.

  399. That's Jesus'

  400. calling card.

  401. that's his thing.

  402. That lets everyone

  403. know that it's him.

  404. And this is not

  405. the first time

  406. that Jesus has done this,

  407. right?

  408. At the beginning

  409. of Luke's gospel

  410. in Luke chapter 5,

    Luke 5 chapter mention

  411. we read

  412. that this is precisely

  413. how Jesus called

  414. his first disciples.

  415. It's his

  416. calling card.

  417. And so how,

  418. here in our story,

  419. how did the disciples

  420. respond to Jesus'

  421. calling card?

  422. look at verse 7.

  423. First,

  424. something snaps,

  425. something clicks

  426. in John's mind,

  427. the disciple

  428. whom Jesus loved.

  429. It said that

  430. he said to Peter,

  431. it is the Lord.

  432. John gets it.

  433. He turns to Peter

  434. and says,

  435. it is the Lord.

  436. And then,

  437. and then something

  438. kind of goes haywire

  439. almost in Peter's,

  440. in Peter's mind

  441. because look what happens

  442. when Peter hears

  443. that it's the Lord.

  444. he put on

  445. his outer garment

  446. for he was stripped

  447. for work

  448. and threw himself

  449. into the sea.

  450. He was so overwhelmed

  451. and overcome

  452. by the realization

  453. that Jesus is here.

  454. He's overwhelmed

  455. by the grace

  456. of Jesus' presence.

  457. And you can imagine him

  458. just thinking,

  459. can this really be?

  460. Is Jesus really here?

  461. When I was 12 years old,

  462. my Grandpa Santos,

  463. my dad's dad,

  464. passed away.

  465. Now, Grandpa Santos

  466. was one of my favorite,

  467. I'll just say,

  468. he was my favorite grandparent.

  469. He was the one

  470. that loved me

  471. and my siblings the most.

  472. And he had

  473. a unique calling card.

  474. It was this whistle,

  475. this sound

  476. that he would make

  477. that let everyone know

  478. that he was present,

  479. that he was there.

  480. And you probably

  481. never heard it before.

  482. I'm going to try it

  483. this morning.

  484. But Grandpa Santos' whistle

  485. sounded like this.

  486. That was Grandpa Santos' thing.

  487. Who here has ever heard

  488. that noise before?

  489. Exactly.

  490. Right?

  491. A couple people.

  492. Have you met my grandpa?

  493. That's amazing.

  494. But whenever I would hear that,

  495. if I was in a large crowd,

  496. I would know

  497. that Grandpa Santos

  498. was there.

  499. Well, like I said,

  500. he passed away

  501. when I was 12.

  502. It was really sad

  503. and really tragic.

  504. It was the first grandparent

  505. to lose.

  506. And, you know,

  507. he was in the hospital.

  508. He was recovering

  509. from surgery.

  510. They had removed

  511. some cancerous tumors.

  512. And we thought

  513. he was going to pull through

  514. and make it.

  515. And then the day

  516. that he was supposed

  517. to come home,

  518. everything went south.

  519. All of his internal systems

  520. started shutting down.

  521. There were complications

  522. from the surgery

  523. that they didn't catch.

  524. And I remember

  525. as a 12-year-old

  526. praying fervently

  527. with my family

  528. that the Lord

  529. would spare his life.

  530. And within a day or two,

  531. he was gone.

  532. Now,

  533. if I were walking

  534. around Davidson

  535. where I live,

  536. where my wife and I live

  537. with our two girls,

  538. let's say I was walking

  539. down Main Street

  540. or I was walking

  541. around campus

  542. where I work,

  543. and I heard,

  544. you better believe

  545. that I'd be overcome

  546. with emotion,

  547. that the hair

  548. on the back of my neck

  549. would stand up

  550. just as it's standing up

  551. right now.

  552. And you better believe

  553. that I'd be wondering,

  554. could this really be?

  555. Is Grandpa Santos here?

  556. Are all these sad memories

  557. coming untrue?

  558. Brothers and sisters,

  559. have you,

  560. like Peter,

  561. have you heard

  562. Jesus' calling card?

  563. Have you experienced

  564. the grace

  565. of Jesus' presence?

  566. Have you been overwhelmed

  567. by that grace?

  568. If you have ever experienced

  569. genuine,

  570. loving fellowship,

  571. Christian fellowship,

  572. then you have heard

  573. Jesus' calling card.

  574. He promises that

  575. where two or three

  576. are gathered in his name,

  577. there he is among us.

  578. Or,

  579. have you ever

  580. opened up

  581. God's word

  582. and let God's word

  583. open you up?

  584. Have you ever

  585. let yourself

  586. become saturated

  587. in God's word?

  588. If so,

  589. then you have heard

  590. Jesus' calling card.

  591. Jesus was so saturated

  592. in God's word.

  593. And if you

  594. have internalized

  595. God's word,

  596. then you've internalized

  597. Jesus as well.

  598. The word of God,

  599. the writer of the Hebrew

  600. says,

  601. is living and active.

  602. Why?

  603. Because Jesus

  604. is living and active

  605. among us

  606. in and through

  607. his word.

  608. Or how about this?

  609. Have you ever

  610. prayed?

  611. Have you ever

  612. offered up

  613. your sincere

  614. thoughts,

  615. longings,

  616. desires,

  617. fears,

  618. worries,

  619. anxieties?

  620. Have you ever

  621. lifted them up

  622. to the Lord?

  623. If so,

  624. then you've

  625. experienced

  626. the grace

  627. of God's

  628. presence.

  629. God's word

  630. promises that

  631. our prayers

  632. are like

  633. incense before

  634. the Lord.

  635. Even today,

  636. even right now,

  637. in the very

  638. presence of

  639. the most high

  640. God in the

  641. heavenly throne room.

  642. An extension

  643. of you is

  644. there.

  645. Your thoughts,

  646. your desires,

  647. your longings

  648. in God's

  649. own presence.

  650. Or,

  651. how about this?

  652. Have you ever

  653. participated in

  654. communion?

  655. Have you ever

  656. taken communion?

  657. Have you ever

  658. been baptized?

  659. Have you ever

  660. witnessed a

  661. baptism?

  662. Then you,

  663. too,

  664. have heard

  665. Jesus'

  666. calling card.

  667. Because he

  668. promises to

  669. meet with his

  670. people in

  671. and through

  672. the sacraments

  673. of the Lord's

  674. Supper and

  675. baptism.

  676. Well,

  677. not only does

  678. God meet

  679. with Peter

  680. and with us

  681. through the

  682. grace of his

  683. presence,

  684. but he also

  685. ministers to us

  686. through the

  687. grace of

  688. place as

  689. well.

  690. Would you

  691. look with

  692. me at

  693. verses 9

  694. through 14,

  695. kind of the

  696. middle of

  697. the passage

  698. that we

  699. just read.

  700. And as we

  701. look over

  702. these verses,

  703. I want to

  704. invite you

  705. to imagine

  706. the sights

  707. and the

  708. smells of

  709. this scene

  710. through the

  711. eyes and,

  712. yes,

  713. even the

  714. nose of

  715. Peter.

  716. So enter

  717. Peter's

  718. sandals and

  719. imagine this

  720. scene through

  721. his eyes and

  722. even through

  723. his nose.

  724. Here's what I

  725. mean.

  726. So for

  727. one,

  728. it's dark

  729. out.

  730. Verse 4

  731. told us that

  732. day was just

  733. breaking.

  734. And on the

  735. shore, there's

  736. this charcoal

  737. fire already

  738. set up.

  739. Jesus is there

  740. and he's

  741. breaking bread

  742. and he's serving

  743. you a meal.

  744. He's feeding

  745. you.

  746. Now, if you're

  747. Peter and you're

  748. taking in all

  749. these sights and

  750. smells, what do

  751. these things

  752. remind you of?

  753. when was the

  754. last time you

  755. saw Jesus

  756. break bread and

  757. serve you a

  758. meal?

  759. Oh, yeah.

  760. It was that

  761. night when

  762. Jesus predicted

  763. that you,

  764. Peter, would

  765. deny him.

  766. And you

  767. doubled down

  768. and said,

  769. no way, I'm

  770. going to die

  771. before I deny

  772. you.

  773. Or, man,

  774. what is that

  775. smell?

  776. I mean, what is

  777. that smell that's

  778. filling your nose,

  779. that's clinging

  780. to your hair,

  781. that's getting in

  782. all your clothes,

  783. that's stinging

  784. your eyes?

  785. What is that?

  786. Oh, yeah.

  787. How could you

  788. forget?

  789. It's the smell

  790. of a charcoal

  791. fire.

  792. Now, let me

  793. pause there.

  794. For you and

  795. for me, the

  796. smell of a

  797. charcoal fire,

  798. what does that

  799. remind us of?

  800. It was a July

  801. 4th, Independence

  802. Day, right?

  803. Like, gathering

  804. with family and

  805. friends, cooking

  806. some hot dogs and

  807. hamburgers, right?

  808. Not so for

  809. Peter.

  810. What does the

  811. smell of a

  812. charcoal fire

  813. remind Peter

  814. of?

  815. Well, for

  816. Peter, that

  817. smell is the

  818. smell of

  819. failure.

  820. Because it

  821. was around

  822. another charcoal

  823. fire that

  824. Peter watched

  825. Jesus be

  826. dragged before

  827. a kangaroo

  828. court in the

  829. high priest

  830. courtyard.

  831. And it was

  832. there around a

  833. charcoal fire that

  834. you, Peter,

  835. denied Jesus

  836. three times.

  837. And you

  838. know, they

  839. say that

  840. smell is one

  841. of the

  842. strongest senses,

  843. especially as it

  844. relates to

  845. memories.

  846. So again, if

  847. you're Peter and

  848. you're there on

  849. the shore of

  850. Galilee, your

  851. body might be

  852. here on the

  853. shore of

  854. Galilee, but

  855. your mind and

  856. your heart are

  857. back in that

  858. courtyard, around

  859. that other

  860. charcoal fire,

  861. watching Jesus

  862. and denying

  863. that you ever

  864. knew him.

  865. And so, for

  866. Peter, the

  867. smell of

  868. failure is the

  869. smell of a

  870. charcoal fire.

  871. It reminds him

  872. of the biggest

  873. failure that he's

  874. ever had in his

  875. entire life.

  876. What does

  877. failure smell

  878. like to you?

  879. Is it the

  880. smell of your

  881. childhood home?

  882. Maybe a

  883. particular room in

  884. your childhood

  885. home?

  886. Is it the

  887. smell of a

  888. certain perfume

  889. or a certain

  890. cologne?

  891. Is it the

  892. smell of

  893. stale beer

  894. or whiskey?

  895. Is it the

  896. smell of a

  897. high school

  898. gymnasium or

  899. locker room?

  900. Is it the

  901. smell of

  902. scantrons and

  903. number two

  904. pencils?

  905. What does

  906. failure smell

  907. like to

  908. you?

  909. Well, for

  910. me, failure

  911. smells like

  912. rubber.

  913. Not all

  914. rubber, but

  915. a very

  916. particular kind

  917. of rubber.

  918. The kind

  919. of rubber

  920. that they

  921. put in

  922. stairwells

  923. in commercial

  924. buildings.

  925. You know

  926. what I'm

  927. talking about?

  928. Like those

  929. concrete stairs

  930. in commercial

  931. buildings that

  932. have the

  933. rubber coating

  934. and that's

  935. glued down

  936. and it has

  937. those little

  938. bumps that

  939. prevent you

  940. from skidding.

  941. That smell,

  942. that's the

  943. smell of

  944. failure for

  945. me.

  946. Because when

  947. I was in

  948. college, when

  949. I was a

  950. junior at

  951. Davidson, I

  952. had a huge

  953. crush on

  954. this girl

  955. that I

  956. met in

  957. RUF.

  958. The same

  959. ministry that

  960. Matthew and

  961. I met in,

  962. the same

  963. ministry that

  964. I now serve

  965. with.

  966. And it just

  967. so happened

  968. that my

  969. junior year,

  970. she lived

  971. one floor

  972. above me

  973. in our

  974. dorm.

  975. And so

  976. one night,

  977. I mustered

  978. up the

  979. courage to

  980. go and

  981. ask this

  982. young woman

  983. out.

  984. And just

  985. so you

  986. know where

  987. this story

  988. is going,

  989. that young

  990. woman is

  991. not my

  992. wife,

  993. Amanda.

  994. So late

  995. one night,

  996. I get the

  997. courage, I'm

  998. going to go

  999. ask her

  1000. out.

  1001. I go out

  1002. of my

  1003. room, down

  1004. the hall,

  1005. get into

  1006. the stairwell,

  1007. and bam,

  1008. immediately I'm

  1009. hit with

  1010. the smell of

  1011. these rubber

  1012. steps.

  1013. Our dorm had

  1014. just been

  1015. renovated the

  1016. year before,

  1017. and I don't

  1018. know if it

  1019. was the

  1020. rubber or

  1021. the glue

  1022. that was

  1023. connecting the

  1024. rubber to

  1025. the steps,

  1026. but man,

  1027. it was making

  1028. me lightheaded.

  1029. So distinct.

  1030. And so I

  1031. go up the

  1032. steps, I'm

  1033. getting nervous,

  1034. right, to ask

  1035. this young

  1036. woman out,

  1037. and I go to

  1038. reach for the

  1039. door, to

  1040. open the door

  1041. to go onto

  1042. her hall, and

  1043. I say, I

  1044. can't do

  1045. this.

  1046. So I let

  1047. go of the

  1048. door, I

  1049. turn around,

  1050. I go back

  1051. down the

  1052. steps, I go

  1053. to open the

  1054. door to my

  1055. hall, and I'm

  1056. like, Andrew,

  1057. you've come

  1058. this far, you

  1059. got to go

  1060. follow through

  1061. with it.

  1062. And I must

  1063. have done

  1064. this probably

  1065. two or three

  1066. times up and

  1067. down the

  1068. steps.

  1069. And at one

  1070. point, I

  1071. actually started

  1072. to get

  1073. concerned

  1074. for my

  1075. own health

  1076. and physical

  1077. well-being

  1078. because I

  1079. was getting

  1080. so light-headed

  1081. from these

  1082. fumes coming

  1083. off these

  1084. rubber steps.

  1085. And so I

  1086. was like,

  1087. all right, you

  1088. just got to

  1089. go do this,

  1090. you can't

  1091. stay in this

  1092. stairwell, go

  1093. for it.

  1094. So I did, I

  1095. opened the

  1096. door, went

  1097. onto her

  1098. hall, got up

  1099. to the door,

  1100. knocked on

  1101. her door, and

  1102. she answered, I

  1103. asked her out,

  1104. and she turned

  1105. me down.

  1106. And then I

  1107. had to go back

  1108. into that

  1109. stairwell, get

  1110. my nose and

  1111. my lungs filled

  1112. with this

  1113. obnoxious smell

  1114. of rubber, and

  1115. then go back

  1116. to my room.

  1117. Now, that

  1118. is not

  1119. necessarily a

  1120. story of

  1121. moral failure,

  1122. but it

  1123. certainly felt

  1124. like social

  1125. failure.

  1126. You know, that

  1127. rejection from

  1128. a young lady

  1129. that you're

  1130. interested in,

  1131. it certainly

  1132. felt like a

  1133. failure of

  1134. attractability,

  1135. of

  1136. desirability.

  1137. and so for

  1138. years, whenever

  1139. I would smell

  1140. that distinct

  1141. rubber smell,

  1142. I'd be brought

  1143. back to that

  1144. place and be

  1145. reminded of

  1146. that failure.

  1147. Until just a

  1148. few years ago,

  1149. when I returned

  1150. to Davidson

  1151. College to

  1152. serve as the

  1153. campus minister,

  1154. and wouldn't

  1155. you know it,

  1156. the same stairs

  1157. with the same

  1158. rubber is in

  1159. the student

  1160. union, where we

  1161. have all of our

  1162. meetings, as it

  1163. was in that

  1164. dorm room, when

  1165. I was a

  1166. junior.

  1167. And so from

  1168. the very

  1169. beginning, when

  1170. I started

  1171. serving as

  1172. campus minister,

  1173. I'd have to

  1174. go up and

  1175. down these

  1176. stairs and

  1177. smell that

  1178. rubber smell to

  1179. go to our

  1180. large group

  1181. meetings, to

  1182. go to our

  1183. Bible studies.

  1184. But here's

  1185. the difference.

  1186. When I would

  1187. go on Tuesday

  1188. night to go get

  1189. ready for large

  1190. group as a

  1191. campus minister,

  1192. I had my

  1193. wife Amanda by

  1194. my side.

  1195. We would often

  1196. go up those

  1197. steps together.

  1198. And after a few

  1199. times of that

  1200. happening, I

  1201. realized,

  1202. this smell

  1203. doesn't have a

  1204. hold over me

  1205. anymore.

  1206. The Lord is

  1207. redeeming that

  1208. smell and that

  1209. memory for me

  1210. and replacing

  1211. those with new

  1212. and better

  1213. memories with

  1214. my wife Amanda.

  1215. The Lord is

  1216. doing something

  1217. very similar here

  1218. for Peter.

  1219. He's bringing

  1220. him back to

  1221. that place of

  1222. failure so that

  1223. he can redeem

  1224. that memory for

  1225. him, so that

  1226. he can heal him

  1227. of the guilt and

  1228. shame and regret

  1229. that he felt in

  1230. denying his Lord

  1231. and Savior three

  1232. times.

  1233. And the Lord is

  1234. inviting you to

  1235. return to those

  1236. places of failure

  1237. so that he might

  1238. heal and redeem

  1239. those parts of

  1240. your stories.

  1241. And now, it

  1242. might not be

  1243. practical for you

  1244. to actually

  1245. physically go back

  1246. to those places.

  1247. I mean, what if

  1248. it was in another

  1249. country, right?

1250. What if it was in

  1251. your childhood home

  1252. and your family

  1253. since sold it?

  1254. I'm not saying

  1255. that y'all need

  1256. to go back and

  1257. knock on a

  1258. stranger's door and

  1259. say, hey, I used

  1260. to live here.

1261. Can I go to my

  1262. bedroom?

  1263. There's some

  1264. unfinished business

  1265. that Jesus wants.

  1266. No, that's not

  1267. what I'm saying.

  1268. But what I think

  1269. the Lord would have

  1270. us do is, look,

  1271. you can invite

  1272. Jesus into those

  1273. places of failure

  1274. by inviting a

  1275. brother or sister

  1276. in Christ into

  1277. those stories.

  1278. You could turn to

  1279. a trusted brother

  1280. or sister in

  1281. Christ and open

  1282. up and share in

  1283. vivid detail the

  1284. story of your

  1285. biggest failure and

  1286. allow the Lord

  1287. Jesus to heal and

  1288. redeem those

  1289. memories for you.

  1290. That's the grace

  1291. of place.

  1292. Well, we've

  1293. encountered the

  1294. grace of presence.

  1295. We've encountered

  1296. the grace of

  1297. place.

  1298. Lastly, we

  1299. encounter the

  1300. grace of

  1301. persistence.

  1302. Let me ask

  1303. this.

  1304. As I finished

  1305. reading the last

  1306. section of this

  1307. story as Jesus

  1308. is restoring

  1309. Peter, as I

  1310. read verses 15

  1311. through 19, where

  1312. Jesus, again, he

  1313. asks three times,

  1314. do you love me?

  1315. Do you love me?

  1316. Do you love me?

  1317. Did any of you

  1318. feel for Peter?

  1319. Like at least a

  1320. little bit?

  1321. I know I did

  1322. when I first read

  1323. this story and

  1324. many times since.

  1325. Or how about

  1326. when you read

  1327. that Peter was

  1328. actually grieved

  1329. the third time

  1330. that Jesus asked

  1331. him, do you

  1332. love me?

  1333. I mean, anyone

  1334. else here kind of

  1335. feel like, man,

  1336. Jesus, why do you

1337. got to be so hard

  1338. on poor Peter?

  1339. Like, can't you

  1340. see that you're

  1341. hurting him, that

  1342. you're causing

  1343. grief, that you're

  1344. inflicting pain?

  1345. Anyone?

  1346. Anyone else kind of

  1347. feel for Peter in

  1348. this situation?

  1349. Y'all, there's no

  1350. way around it.

  1351. This is a hard

  1352. passage, and

  1353. especially when we

  1354. get to those last

  1355. two verses in 18

  1356. and 19, where

  1357. Jesus predicts how

  1358. Peter would die.

  1359. That last section,

  1360. this whole last

  1361. section, can kind of

  1362. feel like a wet

  1363. blanket.

  1364. Like, man, that's

  1365. cold, that's harsh,

  1366. that's heavy.

1367. But what I want us

  1368. to see before we

  1369. end our time in

  1370. God's word this

  1371. morning, is that

  1372. grace is abundant

  1373. here.

  1374. And it's the grace

  1375. of persistence.

  1376. So look with me,

  1377. and let's notice the

  1378. grace of Jesus'

  1379. persistence and even

  1380. the grace of Peter's

  1381. persistence.

  1382. So first, Jesus'

  1383. persistence.

  1384. In verses 15

  1385. through 17, three

  1386. times Jesus asks

  1387. Peter if he loves

  1388. him.

  1389. Which, wouldn't you

  1390. know, that's one

  1391. time for each of

  1392. Peter's three

  1393. denials.

  1394. three times Jesus

  1395. restores Peter to

  1396. his high holy

  1397. calling, to go and

  1398. fish for men.

  1399. That calling that

  1400. Jesus placed on

  1401. Peter's life, Jesus

  1402. is now restoring

  1403. Peter to that

  1404. calling.

  1405. And I don't know,

  1406. I can imagine

  1407. Peter, after a

  1408. really poor night of

  1409. fishing where they've

  1410. caught nothing, just

  1411. being really hard and

  1412. down on himself.

  1413. like, man, Peter,

  1414. what made you even

  1415. think that you could

  1416. fish for men like

  1417. Jesus called you to?

  1418. You can't even fish

  1419. for fish anymore.

  1420. Like, I just imagine

1421. Peter just so hard on

  1422. himself or even

  1423. wondering, you know,

  1424. man, now that

1425. Judas is gone, I'm the

  1426. worst disciple.

  1427. I mean, the text

  1428. doesn't say it, so I'm

  1429. not saying that this

  1430. actually happened, but

1431. if I were Peter, that

  1432. would be going through

  1433. my head.

1434. I mean, Judas was the

  1435. worst disciple.

  1436. He betrayed Jesus.

  1437. But Judas is gone.

  1438. Who does that leave?

  1439. That leaves me, Peter,

  1440. the denier.

  1441. I denied him three

  1442. times.

  1443. Have you ever been

  1444. there?

  1445. Have you ever been

  1446. to this place where

  1447. you failed just so

  1448. spectacularly that

  1449. you're like, man, is

  1450. life even worth

  1451. living?

  1452. Should I keep going?

  1453. If you have wondered

1454. that at all, and I'll

  1455. just acknowledge that

1456. there have been a few

  1457. times when I've

  1458. acknowledged, when I've

  1459. wondered that myself.

  1460. If you've ever wondered

  1461. that, please pay

  1462. attention to what Jesus

  1463. is saying to Peter

  1464. here.

  1465. He is saying, look,

1466. Peter, I am not done

  1467. with you yet.

  1468. He's restoring Peter to

1469. his Jesus calling to go

  1470. and fish for men.

  1471. Feed my lambs, Peter.

  1472. Tend my sheep.

  1473. Feed my sheep.

  1474. I still have a use for

  1475. you.

  1476. How amazing is that?

  1477. So why is Peter

  1478. grieved?

1479. Why does it hurt so

  1480. much?

  1481. And why does Jesus

  1482. allow Peter to feel

  1483. that grief?

  1484. I think what's going

1485. on here is that Jesus

1486. wants to make sure that

  1487. Peter doesn't take the

  1488. same path that Judas

  1489. took.

  1490. Peter, or Jesus,

1491. wants to call Peter off

1492. of that path that leads

  1493. to death and despair.

  1494. Peter, and Jesus is

  1495. calling Peter back onto

1496. this path that leads to

  1497. life and salvation.

1498. How do I know this?

  1499. Well, in 2 Corinthians

    2 Corinthians 7 chapter mention

  1500. chapter 7, the apostle

  1501. Paul, he highlights the

  1502. difference between godly

  1503. grief and worldly grief.

1504. And what does Paul say in

  1505. 2 Corinthians 7 verse 10?

    2 Corinthians 7:10

1506. Paul says that godly grief

  1507. produces a repentance that

  1508. leads to salvation without

  1509. regret, whereas worldly

  1510. grief produces death.

1511. Again, Jesus wants Peter off

1512. that path that leads to

1513. worldly grief and onto that

1514. path of godly grief that

  1515. produces a repentance that

  1516. leads to salvation.

1517. Jesus here, towards the end of

1518. our story, Jesus is like the

1519. field surgeon that is pulling

1520. the wounded soldier off the

  1521. field.

1522. This soldier, Peter, has just

1523. stepped on this landmine of

  1524. failure.

1525. And there's all sorts of

  1526. shrapnel of regret surrounding

  1527. his heart.

1528. And so Jesus, the field

1529. surgeon, the good physician, he

1530. is working hard to remove that

1531. shrapnel and to save Peter.

  1532. And yes, it's painful.

1533. And just as Peter starts to feel

1534. overwhelmed and overcome by this

1535. pain, and just as Jesus starts

1536. losing Peter, Jesus has his hands

  1537. around Peter's face.

1538. It's as if he's telling him, stay

  1539. with me, soldier.

  1540. Stay with me.

  1541. Stay with me.

  1542. Do you love me?

  1543. Do you love me?

  1544. Do you love me?

  1545. Do you love me?

1546. Jesus is sharing the grace of

  1547. persistence with Peter.

  1548. And you know what?

1549. That leads to the grace of Peter's

  1550. persistence.

1551. So let's look at the ending again.

  1552. Look at verses 18 and 19.

1553. Yes, this is a hard couple of

  1554. verses.

1555. Jesus saying that when Peter was

1556. young, he used to dress himself

1557. and walk where he wanted, but

  1558. when he's old, he's going to

  1559. stretch out his hands.

1560. Another is going to dress him

1561. and carry him where he does not

  1562. want to go.

1563. And then verse 19 says,

1564. this Jesus said to show by what

1565. kind of death Peter was to

  1566. glorify God.

  1567. Please don't miss this.

1568. Here at the very end, Jesus

1569. promises Peter that he's going to

  1570. end well.

1571. That Peter's death is going to

  1572. glorify God.

1573. Peter has that promise from

  1574. Jesus' own lips.

1575. And can I be honest here for a

  1576. second?

1577. There are some days where I long

1578. to have that same promise from

  1579. Jesus' own lips.

1580. You know those kind of days where

1581. things are not going well, where

1582. you've messed up royally, when

1583. you're convicted over your own sin,

1584. and you're just, you wonder, man,

1585. am I going to make it?

1586. Am I going to make it to the

  1587. finish line?

1588. And again, being really honest

1589. here, like as a minister of the

1590. gospel, it is hard to see those

1591. news headlines of ministers who I'm

1592. sure went into ministry with great

1593. intent, but at the very end, they

  1594. don't end well.

1595. And you know who I'm talking about.

1596. Their names end up in the news and

  1597. in the media, right?

1598. I know that apart from God's grace,

  1599. that can be me.

1600. And there are some days where I'm

1601. just longing for that assurance that

1602. I'm going to end well.

1603. I know what kind of day Peter was

1604. having on the Sea of Galilee before

  1605. Jesus showed up.

1606. And y'all, it was not the same day,

1607. the same kind of day after Jesus

  1608. showed up.

1609. Because after Jesus showed up,

1610. Peter has this assurance that he

  1611. will end well.

1612. And brothers, you and I, brothers and

1613. sisters, you and I have that same

1614. assurance from our Lord and Savior

  1615. Jesus.

1616. And so as I end, let me ask you this.

1617. Has Jesus shown up in your life?

1618. Have you heard his calling card?

1619. Has your hair ever stood on edge,

1620. on end, at the grace of his presence?

1621. Have you invited Jesus into those

  1622. places of past failure?

1623. Have you heard Jesus' persistent

1624. knock, knock, knocking on the door of

  1625. your heart?

1626. If you can answer yes to those

1627. questions, then you need to rejoice.

  1628. Rejoice.

1629. This is the best news there ever was.

  1630. Rejoice.

  1631. Have joy.

1632. And share that joy with someone.

1633. Go tell someone about this.

  1634. This is amazing.

1635. But if not, if you haven't experienced

1636. that sort of grace, a grace that's

1637. bigger than your failures, then please

1638. would you hear these words from

  1639. Jesus' own mouth.

  1640. Jesus says,

1641. Behold, I stand at the door and

  1642. knock.

1643. If anyone hears my voice and opens

1644. the door, I will come into him and

1645. eat with him and he with me.

1646. Peter heard that voice and opened the

  1647. door.

1648. You all, you all have just heard that

  1649. voice.

1650. Will you too open that door?

1651. Would you pray with me?

1652. Holy Spirit, I pray for all those in

1653. this room who have heard your voice,

1654. who want to open the door, but don't

  1655. know how.

1656. Would you rush into them right now?

1657. Would you overwhelm them with your

1658. grace that is bigger than their

  1659. failures?

1660. And would you, Holy Spirit, comfort and

1661. convince all of us of your presence

  1662. and your persistence?

1663. We long for you to heal us.

1664. And we ask all of these things in

  1665. Jesus' powerful name.

  1666. Amen.
