  1. Welcome if you're new or visiting with us.

  2. We're glad that you're here.

  3. And we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats,

  4. but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  5. And as we follow Jesus together, we become convinced there's no one so good.

  6. They don't need God's grace.

  7. And no one so bad that they can't have it,

  8. which is why we turn back week after week to hear what God has to say to us in his word.

  9. We're continuing our series in the Gospel of Mark.

  10. You'll remember that the Gospels tell the story of Jesus and his life and his death and his resurrection.

  11. And when we were in the first half of the Gospel, chapters 1 through 8,

  12. I would tell you over and over that we had two questions.

  13. Who is Jesus and how do we respond to him?

  14. And those questions are still relevant, but as we make our way into the second half of Mark,

  15. the question really is, what does it actually look like to follow Jesus?

  16. We saw before in chapter 8 that Peter had one idea of what it meant for Jesus to be the Christ,

  17. and reality was actually quite different.

  18. We're continuing that theme this morning as we're in Mark 9,

  19. looking at verses 14 through 29,

  20. as we are continuing to ask this question of what does it look like to have faith?

  21. What does it look like day to day as we follow after Jesus?

  22. In this passage, we're going to see two different pictures of unbelief.

  23. So two negative examples that are going to help us understand positive application

  24. for what it means to walk after Jesus in this world.

  25. And I'll tell you at the beginning what those are.

  26. So there's two types of unbelief.

  27. First of all, the disciples have too much faith in themselves.

  28. The disciples have way too much faith in themselves.

  29. The second type of unbelief we see in the father of this boy,

  30. which is too little faith in God.

  31. Too much faith in ourselves, too little faith in God.

  32. It's with that that I'm going to invite you to turn with me to Mark 9,

  33. starting at verse 14.

  34. You can turn on your phone.

  35. You can turn in your Bible.

  36. You can turn in your worship guide.

  37. No matter where you turn, remember that this is God's Word.

  38. And God tells us that his Word is more precious than gold,

  39. even the finest gold, and that it's sweeter than honey,

  40. even honey that comes straight from the honeycomb,

  41. which is why we read now starting at verse 14.

  42. And when they came to the disciples,

  43. they saw a great crowd around them,

  44. and scribes arguing with them.

  45. And immediately all the crowd, when they saw him,

  46. were greatly amazed and ran up to him and greeted him.

  47. And he asked them,

  48. What are you arguing about with them?

  49. And someone from the crowd answered him,

  50. Teacher, I brought my son to you,

  51. for he has a spirit that makes him mute.

  52. And whenever it seizes him, it throws him down,

  53. and he foams and grinds his teeth and becomes rigid.

  54. So I asked your disciples to cast it out,

  55. and they were not able.

  56. Verse 19.

  57. And he answered them,

  58. O faithless generation,

  59. how long am I to be with you?

  60. How long am I to bear with you?

  61. Bring him to me.

  62. And they brought the boy to him,

  63. and when the spirit saw him,

  64. immediately it convulsed the boy,

  65. and he fell on the ground and rolled about,

  66. foaming at the mouth.

  67. And Jesus asked his father,

  68. How long has this been happening to him?

  69. And he said,

  70. From childhood.

  71. And it has often cast him into fire and into water

  72. to destroy him.

  73. But if you can do anything,

  74. have compassion on us and help us.

  75. And Jesus said to him,

  76. If you can,

  77. all things are possible for one who believes.

  78. Immediately the father of the child cried out and said,

  79. I believe.

  80. Help my unbelief.

  81. And when Jesus saw that a crowd came running together,

  82. he rebuked the unclean spirit,

  83. saying to it,

  84. You mute and deaf spirit,

  85. I command you,

  86. come out of him and never enter him again.

  87. And after crying out and convulsing him terribly,

  88. it came out,

  89. and the boy was like a corpse,

  90. so that most of them said,

  91. He is dead.

  92. But Jesus took him by the hand

  93. and lifted him up,

  94. and he arose.

  95. And when he had entered the house,

  96. his disciples asked him privately,

  97. Why could we not cast it out?

  98. And he said to them,

  99. This kind cannot be driven out by anything but prayer.

  100. I invite you to pray with me

  101. as we come to this portion of God's word.

  102. Our Father in heaven,

  103. we thank you again that you speak to us.

  104. We ask that you would do that this morning by your word,

  105. that you would show us our need for your grace.

  106. You'd show us how you meet and supply that need.

  107. And most of all,

  108. that you would show us Jesus Christ

  109. with more beauty and clarity

  110. than we've seen before.

  111. That you would grow our love

  112. and our affection for him

  113. and our reverence

  114. and our awe for him.

  115. And we ask these things

  116. in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

  117. Amen.

  118. If you remember last week

  119. from the beginning of chapter 9,

  120. we had the transfiguration

  121. where Peter and James and John

  122. had this vision of what Jesus truly was

  123. in all his divine glory.

  124. He had this light that was shining from inside of him

  125. that glowed all the way through his clothes.

  126. And so after they'd heard Jesus telling them

  127. about the suffering of the Christian life,

  128. they also were able to see how great and glorious

  129. it would be as well.

  130. That it would not just be following Jesus in suffering,

  131. but also following him in victory.

  132. It's after that story that we enter into this one,

  133. verse 14,

  134. and when they came to the disciples.

  135. In other words,

  136. they have come down from this glorious vision of Jesus,

  137. understanding who he is in all of his splendor.

  138. And immediately they experience this whiplash.

  139. Because on the one hand,

  140. they have seen Jesus alone on the top of the mountain.

  141. On the other hand,

  142. they walk right back into a problematic situation.

  143. They saw a great crowd around them

  144. and the scribes arguing with them.

  145. And so they go from this glorious vision

  146. into a headache-inducing situation.

  147. Peter, James, and John are probably wondering

  148. where their Tylenol is as they come off the mountain.

  149. Okay.

  150. Jesus has come, though, in the midst of this argument,

  151. and there appears to be a new distraction.

  152. Verse 15,

  153. all the crowd, when they see Jesus,

  154. they pull away from whatever this great argument was,

  155. and they're amazed just that Jesus is there with them.

  156. Of course, Jesus, as always, is a question asker.

  157. Verse 16,

  158. and he wants to know,

  159. what is this that all of them have been quarreling about

  160. while he has been up on the mountain?

  161. They don't get a direct answer,

  162. but we find out in verse 17,

  163. it must have something to do

  164. with the fact that the disciples

  165. have been trying to heal this boy,

  166. this son,

  167. and they've not been able to.

  168. And it's the father,

  169. unsurprisingly, that speaks up.

  170. Teacher, I brought my son to you,

  171. for he has a spirit that makes him mute.

  172. Verse 18,

  173. so I asked your disciples to cast it out,

  174. and they were not able.

  175. Now, if you're familiar with the gospel of Mark,

  176. if you've been with us,

  177. this should be very surprising.

  178. We should be confused as we hear

  179. that the disciples are unable to perform this healing,

  180. because we saw Mark chapter three.

  181. Jesus chose them for two reasons,

  182. that they would preach,

  183. and they would heal and cast out demons.

  184. This is what they've been called to do.

  185. Not only that,

  186. Mark chapter three proceeds into Mark chapter six,

  187. where Jesus sends them out two by two

  188. to do that very thing,

  189. to preach and to heal.

  190. And remember,

  191. they come back so excited

  192. to tell Jesus the stories

  193. of what happened while they were out.

  194. So the obvious question for us

  195. is what has happened?

  196. Why is it that the disciples

  197. who are trying to fulfill the mission

  198. that Jesus gave them,

  199. who have been able to succeed

  200. so well in the past,

  201. fail at this point?

  202. Thankfully, Jesus doesn't leave us to wonder.

  203. He gives us our first answer in verse 19.

  204. And he answered them,

  205. Oh, faithless generation,

  206. how long am I to be with you?

  207. Now, Jesus uses the word generation here,

  208. which means that he's most likely speaking

  209. of more than just the disciples,

  210. but certainly not less than them,

  211. because it's their unbelief,

  212. their faithlessness,

  213. which has led to this situation

  214. where they're trying to heal,

  215. and they find themselves completely incompetent.

  216. Of course, that would make us to ask,

  217. well, what is it that the disciples

  218. are doing differently this time?

  219. Why is it that they were able to have faith

  220. last time, but not this time?

  221. Jesus gives us the final answer in verse 29,

  222. when the disciples want to know,

  223. why could we not cast it out?

  224. And he said to them,

  225. this kind cannot be driven out

  226. by anything but prayer.

  227. Why is it that the disciples were unable to heal

  228. in this situation?

  229. The answer is very simple.

  230. They forgot to pray.

  231. In other words,

  232. the disciples thought that they were really hot stuff.

  233. And they had decided that they were great enough

  234. and powerful enough

  235. that they would be able to do this on their own.

  236. They had forgotten that Jesus

  237. was the source of their power.

  238. They had forgotten how dependent

  239. they actually were on him.

  240. They forgot that they needed God's help.

  241. The point, brothers and sisters, is this.

  242. There are blessings and power from God

  243. that we do not have

  244. because we have not prayed.

  245. There are blessings and power from God

  246. that we do not have

  247. because we have not prayed.

  248. You could put it in the opposite.

  249. There are blessings and power from God

  250. we will not have

  251. until or when we pray for them.

  252. James chapter four says the same thing.

  253. You do not have

  254. because you do not ask.

  255. Now this raises a question,

  256. which is why has God set up the world

  257. so that it works in this way?

  258. Why wouldn't he just set it up

  259. so that we would know

  260. that we belong to him

  261. and we could go out at that point

  262. and have all the power

  263. and the blessings that we would need

  264. without having to return back

  265. over and over again

  266. to answer him in prayer?

  267. Well, the answer part is

  268. that not that God is punishing us,

  269. but that he is protecting us.

  270. It is not that God is punishing us.

  271. It's not that he's angry and upset

  272. that people won't pray

  273. or he's trying to be withholding

  274. until people come and beg him

  275. like some vindictive God.

  276. No, he wants to protect his people

  277. from what is most dangerous to them.

  278. And what is it that is most dangerous?

  279. It's the idea that we don't need God.

  280. Look with me on verse seven

  281. of your worship guide.

  282. Tim Keller spells this out for us

  283. in his book on prayer

  284. when he tells us,

  285. God often waits to give a blessing

  286. until you have prayed for it.

  287. Why?

  288. Good things that we do not ask for

  289. will usually be interpreted

  290. by our hearts

  291. as the fruit of our own wisdom

  292. and diligence.

  293. God wants to rescue us

  294. from the self-sufficiency

  295. that leads to overconfidence

  296. and sets us up for failure.

  297. In other words,

  298. we are in deep trouble

  299. if we believe that our gifts

  300. and abilities operate

  301. without God's help.

  302. In another place in that book,

  303. Keller says that it's prayer

  304. that actually makes God's blessings

  305. and his power safe for us.

  306. They no longer present a danger.

  307. Now you might be wondering

  308. why and how could blessings from God

  309. present a danger to us?

  310. Well, I want you to think about it this way.

  311. Let's say we had an amazing revival

  312. here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church

  313. and within a certain matter of weeks,

  314. our attendance doubled

  315. and we were having two or three baptisms

  316. a Sunday of soldiers from Court Carson

  317. and people from our community

  318. who were coming to know Jesus Christ

  319. and we had never prayed to God for revival.

  320. What would be the danger?

  321. We'd be tempted to go around

  322. telling other churches

  323. about how we had figured out the secret

  324. and if they could just copy us

  325. in the way that our building looked

  326. and the way that we ran marketing

  327. and the times that our Google reviews were great,

  328. then they too could be like

  329. Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church.

  330. In other words,

  331. we would praise ourselves rather than God

  332. and that would be a great danger to us.

  333. Imagine how dangerous it would be

  334. if you saw all of your dreams come true

  335. for your children and they experienced

  336. no obstacles in this life

  337. but instead went from strength to strength

  338. and received blessing after blessing

  339. and you had never prayed.

  340. What would the danger be?

  341. That you would congratulate yourself

  342. on how smart and wise and gifted you are as a parent

  343. and if other parents could just be as great

  344. and wonderful as you,

  345. then they also could have success.

  346. It would praise yourself rather than God.

  347. Imagine how dangerous it would be

  348. if you had victory over sin and temptation

  349. and suddenly your life was free

  350. of so many of the things that tied you down

  351. and you had never prayed.

  352. What would the danger be

  353. if only other people could be as great as me?

  354. God loves you too much

  355. to allow you to live a life filled with smug success

  356. disconnected from him.

  357. God loves you too much

  358. to allow you to live a smug life of success

  359. disconnected from him.

  360. What could be worse

  361. than to be incredibly successful and powerful

  362. and far away from God?

  363. God loves you too much.

  364. God loves you too much.

  365. God loves you too much.

  366. God loves you too much.

  367. God loves you too much.

  368. God loves you too much.

  369. God loves you too much.

  370. What does it gain a man

  371. to have the whole world

  372. and forfeit his soul?

  373. And so what do we do

  374. as Christians in 2022

  375. at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church?

  376. The disciples set a negative example

  377. for us to flip it to the positive.

  378. We cry out to God in prayer

  379. knowing that he has set up the world

  380. in such a way

  381. that that is how we access

  382. his blessings and his power.

  383. And when we see him answer,

  384. those blessings do not lead to pride.

  385. They lead to praise.

  386. When God answers,

  387. his blessings for us

  388. lead to praise, not to pride.

  389. Because when we prayed,

  390. we made it safe.

  391. We said, look,

  392. we know that if and when this happens,

  393. it is not because we are great

  394. and glorious and powerful,

  395. but because God is.

  396. That is why God has set up the world

  397. that his blessings come through our prayers.

  398. Success without prayer leads to pride.

  399. Success with prayer leads to praise.

  400. God wants us to trust him

  401. and praise him more than anything else.

  402. That is why the disciples were unable to heal.

  403. What do you need done

  404. that you thought you could do on your own?

  405. What blessings and power from God

  406. did you think you can generate by yourself,

  407. but instead you need to pray about?

  408. God invites his people to come to him

  409. and bring their requests.

  410. And he delights to pour out his blessings.

  411. We're going back to the 101 of the Gospel of Mark.

  412. Remember I told you so many times,

  413. neediness is the price of admission.

  414. And the way God's people show their need

  415. is by coming to him in prayer.

  416. We've seen the disciples here,

  417. they trust too much in themselves.

  418. But our main character in this passage

  419. is actually this father of this son,

  420. this boy who has too little trust in Jesus.

  421. If you look with me at verse 22,

  422. you notice he is low on confidence.

  423. We've heard about how traumatic it is

  424. for this child and the things that he's experienced.

  425. And this father says to Jesus,

  426. but if you can do anything,

  427. have compassion on us and help us.

  428. Now the word, problematic word for him there is if.

  429. He stands in contrast to the Syrophoenician woman

  430. we saw in Mark chapter six.

  431. Remember, Jesus tells people

  432. that she is a woman of great faith.

  433. Why was her faith so great?

  434. Because she believed that Jesus could.

  435. That's why she said,

  436. even the dogs get to eat the crumbs

  437. from under the table, right?

  438. She keeps pushing because she knows

  439. the character of Jesus' power.

  440. One aspect of faith

  441. is our level of confidence in God's power.

  442. One aspect of faith

  443. is whether we really truly believe

  444. that God can do what he says he can do.

  445. This man fails to meet that mark.

  446. He says, if.

  447. If you can do this,

  448. maybe have some compassion on us.

  449. And so perhaps he believes more

  450. in Jesus' compassion than his power.

  451. That helps us understand

  452. Jesus' statement here in verse 23.

  453. Jesus is understandably upset.

  454. He repeats these words,

  455. if you can,

  456. all things are possible

  457. for one who believes.

  458. In other words,

  459. what's standing between you

  460. and this healing

  461. has nothing to do

  462. with the limits of my power

  463. because they have none.

  464. What is standing between you

  465. and this healing

  466. is whether you believe

  467. that I am the king of the world

  468. because everything is possible

  469. for one who believes.

  470. Now we have to talk for a minute

  471. about this promise.

  472. We could potentially put this

  473. under the category

  474. of hard sayings of Jesus

  475. and it could be easily used

  476. or abused, I should say,

  477. to shame people.

  478. We might say,

  479. well, Jesus makes this promise

  480. that if you have enough faith,

  481. anything's possible.

  482. So clearly,

  483. X has not happened in your life

  484. and so your faith is failing.

  485. Problem is,

  486. that actually changes some words

  487. in this verse.

  488. Verse 23

  489. doesn't say God will do everything.

  490. He says that he can.

  491. Okay?

  492. All things are possible.

  493. The point is not

  494. that your wildest dreams

  495. will come true

  496. if you believe hard enough.

  497. The point is that

  498. nothing is too great for God.

  499. The point is not

  500. that your wildest dreams

  501. will come true

  502. if your faith is great enough.

  503. The point is that

  504. nothing is too great for God.

  505. There is a difference

  506. between a can't and a won't.

  507. Jesus is telling this man,

  508. if your son is not healed,

  509. it's not because I can't.

  510. Don't use that word if.

  511. It would only be because I won't.

  512. There is nothing too great

  513. for my power.

  514. It does say

  515. all things are possible.

  516. It does not say

  517. all things will happen.

  518. walk away from this verse

  519. knowing that God

  520. is powerful enough,

  521. not that your faith

  522. controls the universe.

  523. Be comforted by the fact

  524. that if God says no

  525. to your request,

  526. it's because he's decided

  527. it's not best,

  528. not because he's not powerful enough.

  529. all things

  530. are possible

  531. for the one who believes.

  532. In fact,

  533. James chapter 4

    James 4 chapter mention

  534. also talks about this.

  535. I quoted it earlier.

  536. He says,

  537. you do not have

  538. because you do not ask.

  539. And then he goes on to say,

  540. you ask and do not receive

  541. because you ask wrongly

  542. to spend it on your passions.

  543. God doesn't answer

  544. every prayer

  545. just because you have

  546. enough faith.

  547. faith and faith

  548. through prayer

  549. is the way

  550. we access

  551. God's blessings

  552. and his power.

  553. So this passage

  554. raises a question for us.

  555. What if we are like

  556. this father?

  557. What if we're like

  558. the disciples?

  559. And maybe we have

  560. too much confidence

  561. in ourselves

  562. or not enough

  563. in God.

  564. What do we do

  565. with our prayerlessness?

  566. How do we walk away

  567. from our lack of faith?

  568. Well, thankfully,

  569. this father,

  570. as much as he's

  571. a negative model,

  572. is also a positive one.

  573. When he understands

  574. what Jesus is saying,

  575. that his doubt

  576. is getting in the way,

  577. he immediately repents.

  578. Verse 24,

  579. immediately the father

  580. of the child

  581. cried out and said,

  582. I believe,

  583. help my unbelief.

  584. Which is a way of saying,

  585. I want to want it.

  586. I want to believe this.

  587. And I know

  588. I can't change myself.

  589. Remember,

  590. I've told you before

  591. that one way

  592. to summarize the gospel

  593. is this.

  594. I know that I need

  595. to change

  596. on the one hand.

  597. And I also know

  598. on the other hand

  599. that I am incapable,

  600. I am powerless

  601. of changing myself.

  602. And so what is the answer

  603. in the midst of that?

  604. It's the one

  605. that this man gives

  606. that resolves

  607. that tension.

  608. I need God

  609. to come

  610. with his supernatural work

  611. to soften

  612. and change my heart.

  613. I cannot stir up

  614. enough faith

  615. in my own life.

  616. I cannot melt

  617. my own heart

  618. and make it change

  619. from a heart of stone

  620. to a heart of flesh.

  621. No, the only hope

  622. for me

  623. is that a power

  624. from the outside

  625. would come and help.

  626. And so the point

  627. is this,

  628. faith is a supernatural

  629. gift and work.

  630. Faith is something

  631. that God must work

  632. within us.

  633. And so the solution

  634. fits the problem.

  635. We become dependent

  636. on God

  637. by becoming

  638. dependent on God.

  639. We become dependent

  640. on God

  641. by saying

  642. how helpless

  643. we are.

  644. We do not become

  645. dependent on God

  646. by becoming

  647. more disciplined

  648. and self-controlled.

  649. We do not

  650. become dependent

  651. on God

  652. by becoming

  653. more rigorous

  654. in the way

  655. that we live

  656. our lives.

  657. No, what this passage

  658. is telling us

  659. is that we will

  660. never have enough

  661. power to do that.

  662. We become dependent

  663. by admitting

  664. that we need God

  665. to make us

  666. dependent.

  667. We receive help

  668. by asking

  669. for help.

  670. And so this man

  671. for us

  672. reveals one of the

  673. greatest spiritual

  674. secrets

  675. of the Christian

  676. life.

  677. do you find

  678. yourself

  679. prayerless

  680. with no desire

  681. to talk to God?

  682. Pray

  683. that you would

  684. want to pray.

  685. Pray to God

  686. that you would

  687. want to pray.

  688. That's not to say

  689. that all sorts

  690. of other methods

  691. or journals

  692. or systems

  693. are unhelpful.

  694. that's to say

  695. that they are

  696. a handmaiden

  697. to the main

  698. thing that must

  699. happen which is

  700. that God is at work

  701. changing your heart

  702. and your life.

  703. Do you find

  704. yourself not

  705. wanting to obey?

  706. Pray that you

  707. would want to obey.

  708. Recognize you have

  709. no hope

  710. outside of God

  711. and his work.

  712. do you find

  713. yourself struggling

  714. with Christianity

  715. as you think

  716. about it

  717. if you're

  718. completely honest

  719. you have

  720. doubts

  721. and questions

  722. and objections.

  723. Pray

  724. that God

  725. would lead you

  726. to the answers

  727. you need.

  728. Pray that God

  729. would help you

  730. in the midst

  731. of your doubt.

  732. There's a

  733. fundamental

  734. recognition

  735. that we cannot

  736. change our

  737. own hearts

  738. and God

  739. can.

  740. Do you

  741. not have

  742. enough faith?

  743. All you have

  744. to do is

  745. ask God

  746. to give you

  747. more faith.

  748. Are you

  749. too independent

  750. like the

  751. disciples?

  752. All you have

  753. to do is

  754. ask God

  755. to make you

  756. more dependent.

  757. Do you

  758. lack faith

  759. like this

  760. father?

  761. All you have

  762. to do is

  763. ask God

  764. to give you

  765. new faith.

  766. The good

  767. news of the

  768. gospel is

  769. this,

  770. that great

  771. faith does

  772. not come

  773. from more

  774. self-discipline.

  775. Faith comes

  776. to those

  777. who ask God

  778. for help.

  779. People of

  780. great faith

  781. are needy

  782. people.

  783. People of

  784. great faith

  785. are people

  786. who like

  787. this man

  788. who say,

  789. I can't

  790. change

  791. and I need

  792. God to

  793. change

  794. me.

  795. No matter

  796. what you

  797. face in

  798. this life,

  799. you are

  800. in desperate

  801. need of

  802. God's

  803. help.

  804. And he's

  805. waiting for

  806. you to

  807. ask.

  808. He's waiting

  809. for you to

  810. ask for

  811. his power.

  812. Finally,

  813. this passage

  814. tells us the

  815. exact type

  816. of power

  817. that we're

  818. believing in.

  819. In verses 26

  820. and 27,

  821. Jesus honors

  822. this man's

  823. small,

  824. mustard seed

  825. size faith

  826. and heals

  827. his son.

  828. And we're

  829. told,

  830. verse 26,

  831. the boy was

  832. like a corpse

  833. so that most

  834. of them said,

  835. he is dead.

  836. Verse 27,

  837. Jesus took

  838. him by the

  839. hand,

  840. lifted him

  841. up,

  842. and he arose.

  843. There's a

  844. picture here,

  845. a foreshadowing

  846. of resurrection

  847. power.

  848. The kind

  849. of power

  850. that we're

  851. hoping in

  852. and looking

  853. towards and

  854. praying for

  855. is a

  856. raise the

  857. dead kind

  858. of power.

  859. It is

  860. Ephesians 1

  861. kind of power

  862. which tells us

  863. that the

  864. very same

  865. power that

  866. raised Jesus

  867. Christ from

  868. the dead

  869. is the

  870. power that

  871. is work

  872. in us.

  873. That is

  874. what gives

  875. us hope

  876. and confidence

  877. as we ask

  878. God for

  879. his help.

  880. Now there's

  881. another discussion

  882. in the Gospel

  883. of Mark

  884. about prayers

  885. and what

  886. is possible

  887. for God.

  888. This one

  889. shows up

  890. in Mark

    Mark 14 chapter mention

  891. chapter 14

  892. as Jesus

  893. is facing

  894. his death

  895. and he

  896. decides that

  897. he is going

  898. to pray

  899. to God.

  900. This is

  901. verse 35,

  902. and going a

  903. little farther

  904. he fell on

  905. the ground

  906. and prayed

  907. that if it

  908. were possible

  909. the hour

  910. might pass

  911. from him.

  912. and he

  913. said,

  914. Abba

  915. Father,

  916. all things

  917. are possible

  918. for you.

  919. Remove

  920. this cup

  921. from me,

  922. yet not

  923. what I

  924. will,

  925. but what

  926. you will.

  927. Jesus,

  928. like a great

  929. teacher,

  930. remembers the

  931. things that

  932. he has

  933. taught.

  934. He knows

  935. all things

  936. are possible.

  937. And yet,

  938. how does he

  939. end it?

  940. Not your

  941. will,

  942. not my

  943. will,

  944. but your

  945. will be done.

  946. That word

  947. possible,

  948. by the way,

  949. is the

  950. exact same

  951. Greek word

  952. that is here

  953. in chapter

  954. nine.

  955. Jesus does

  956. not forget

  957. this exchange,

  958. but instead

  959. he draws

  960. back on it

  961. as he

  962. faces the

  963. cross and

  964. is reminded

  965. that ultimately

  966. it is God

  967. and his

  968. will that

  969. prevails in

  970. the midst

  971. of his

  972. power.

  973. And so

  974. we can

  975. cry out

  976. to God

  977. in prayer

  978. with confidence

  979. and hope

  980. because

  981. God

  982. says yes

  983. to our

  984. prayers

  985. because he

  986. said no

  987. to Jesus'

  988. prayer.

  989. God

  990. can say yes

  991. to our

  992. prayers

  993. because he

  994. said no

  995. to Jesus'

  996. prayer.

  997. Jesus

  998. trusted the

  999. will of

  1000. the Father

  1001. and went

  1002. to death.

  1003. We

  1004. cry out

  1005. to God

  1006. knowing

  1007. that we

  1008. will live.

  1009. in his

  1010. book

  1011. Just Mercy

  1012. the

  1013. lawyer

  1014. Brian

  1015. Stevenson

  1016. tells

  1017. the story

  1018. of a

  1019. man named

  1020. Walter

  1021. McMillan

  1022. who

  1023. in

  1024. 1988

  1025. was

  1026. wrongly

  1027. convicted

  1028. of a

  1029. murder

  1030. in

  1031. Alabama

  1032. from

  1033. 1986.

  1034. It was

  1035. a

  1036. murder

  1037. of a

  1038. college

  1039. student

  1040. named

  1041. Rhonda

  1042. Morrison

  1043. and it

  1044. happened

  1045. in

  1046. Monroeville

  1047. Alabama

  1048. and what

  1049. had

  1050. happened

  1051. is that

  1052. the

  1053. police

  1054. had

  1055. brought

  1056. forth

  1057. false

  1058. testimony

  1059. to frame

  1060. Walter

  1061. and so

  1062. he was

  1063. eventually

  1064. convicted

  1065. of

  1066. capital

  1067. murder

  1068. but what

  1069. Brian

  1070. was able

  1071. to do

  1072. was uncover

  1073. new evidence

  1074. that revealed

  1075. that the

  1076. witnesses

  1077. in this

  1078. situation

  1079. had outright

  1080. lied

  1081. especially

  1082. the key

  1083. witness

  1084. who he

  1085. convinced

  1086. to appear

  1087. in court

  1088. and confessed

  1089. that his

  1090. testimony

  1091. the first

  1092. time around

  1093. was incorrect.

  1094. Now much

  1095. of this

  1096. was because

  1097. racism

  1098. was alive

  1099. and well

  1100. in the

  1101. 1980s

  1102. in Birmingham

  1103. Alabama

  1104. and so

  1105. as the

  1106. second

  1107. hearing

  1108. came around

  1109. the place

  1110. where they

  1111. were going

  1112. to present

  1113. new evidence

  1114. there were

  1115. members of

  1116. the African

  1117. American

  1118. community

  1119. who wanted

  1120. to come

  1121. and support

  1122. Walter

  1123. to show

  1124. that they

  1125. stood with

  1126. him as

  1127. they tried

  1128. to overturn

  1129. this conviction.

  1130. Now the

  1131. second day

  1132. of the

  1133. hearing

  1134. something

  1135. mysterious

  1136. happened

  1137. the black

  1138. supporters

  1139. were not

  1140. able to

  1141. get seated

  1142. until many

  1143. of the white

  1144. supporters had

  1145. already sat

  1146. down and so

  1147. there were not

  1148. many seats

  1149. left for them

  1150. and so they

  1151. had to start

  1152. picking who

  1153. among us

  1154. is going

  1155. to be

  1156. chosen

  1157. to go

  1158. sit in

  1159. this

  1160. balcony

  1161. and support

  1162. Walter.

  1163. One woman

  1164. who was picked

  1165. was Mrs.

  1166. Williams

  1167. and she

  1168. was an

  1169. old revered

  1170. member of

  1171. the community

  1172. and so she

  1173. began to

  1174. enter the

  1175. courtroom

  1176. except one

  1177. thing had

  1178. changed between

  1179. day one

  1180. and day two.

  1181. Day one

  1182. of the court

  1183. hearing it was

  1184. just a normal

  1185. courtroom

  1186. nothing to

  1187. notice.

  1188. Day two

  1189. they'd installed

  1190. this metal

  1191. detector and

  1192. they'd brought

  1193. in a German

  1194. shepherd to

  1195. sniff everyone

  1196. as they

  1197. entered the

  1198. room.

  1199. Well as she

  1200. looked at this

  1201. German shepherd

  1202. Mrs. Williams

  1203. was reminded

  1204. of her time

  1205. in 1965

  1206. when she

  1207. walked in

  1208. Selma for

  1209. voting rights

  1210. and it

  1211. brought back

  1212. her memories

  1213. of dogs

  1214. being set

  1215. on them

  1216. German

  1217. shepherds

  1218. specifically

  1219. and so she

  1220. froze in that

  1221. moment was not

  1222. able to make

  1223. her way into

  1224. the courtroom

  1225. and so she

  1226. went back

  1227. she was filled

  1228. with shame

  1229. and disappointment

  1230. in herself

  1231. and her family

  1232. tells the story

  1233. of that night

  1234. she went

  1235. back to

  1236. her house

  1237. and she

  1238. stayed up

  1239. all night

  1240. praying.

  1241. The next

  1242. morning she

  1243. returned with

  1244. her family in

  1245. the car and on

  1246. the whole drive

  1247. back she just

  1248. kept repeating

  1249. this prayer

  1250. Lord I can't

  1251. be afraid of

  1252. no dog.

  1253. Lord I can't

  1254. be afraid of

  1255. no dog.

  1256. That was her

  1257. prayer over and

  1258. over during the

  1259. night and in

  1260. the morning and

  1261. so then that

  1262. next day she

  1263. walks into the

  1264. courtroom and she

  1265. just says over

  1266. and over to

  1267. herself I

  1268. can't be afraid

  1269. of no dog.

  1270. I can't be

  1271. afraid of no

  1272. dog.

  1273. And so she

  1274. walks past this

  1275. German shepherd to

  1276. sit in this area

  1277. so that she can

  1278. support Walter as

  1279. they try to

  1280. overturn this

  1281. unjust sentence.

  1282. And then when

  1283. she makes it out

  1284. she yells so

  1285. that everyone can

  1286. hear I am

  1287. here.

  1288. She models for

  1289. us the life of

  1290. faith because she

  1291. is shaking with

  1292. fear on the one

  1293. hand and she's

  1294. filled with faith

  1295. on the other.

  1296. And how does she

  1297. close that gap?

  1298. She closes it by

  1299. crying out for

  1300. God's help and

  1301. his mercy.

  1302. She knows that by

  1303. herself she has

  1304. no hope of

  1305. entering that

  1306. courtroom.

  1307. She has no hope

  1308. of standing for

  1309. justice and yet she

  1310. knows that God

  1311. will meet her in

  1312. that moment.

  1313. Here's what I

  1314. know to be true

  1315. and yet I'm

  1316. tripped up by my

  1317. human weakness

  1318. and frailty.

  1319. I am afraid.

  1320. Help my fear.

  1321. And it's with that

  1322. that she's able to

  1323. walk in and

  1324. declare to everyone

  1325. that she is

  1326. present.

  1327. Brothers and

  1328. sisters the same

  1329. is true for us.

  1330. We rely on God's

  1331. power in prayer

  1332. not our own.

  1333. Lord I believe.

  1334. Help my

  1335. unbelief.

  1336. Let's pray.

  1337. Our Father in

  1338. heaven we thank

  1339. you that you

  1340. don't ask us to

  1341. jump through

  1342. higher hoops

  1343. to make better

  1344. test scores on

  1345. our faith but

  1346. you tell us the

  1347. truth that we're

  1348. helpless and

  1349. needy and you

  1350. delight to answer

  1351. our request for

  1352. that help.

  1353. We ask this

  1354. morning that you

  1355. would give us

  1356. both humility and

  1357. confidence.

  1358. We'd be humble in

  1359. knowing that we are

  1360. helpless without you

  1361. and we'd be

  1362. confident in

  1363. knowing that you

  1364. hear and answer

  1365. our prayers.

  1366. We ask these

  1367. things in the

  1368. mighty name of

  1369. Jesus Christ.

  1370. Amen.

  1371. I invite you to

  1372. stand for our

  1373. closing hymn.

  1374. my health has found

  1375. a resting place

  1376. not in device

  1377. or greed

  1378. I trust the

  1379. ever living

  1380. one

  1381. his wounds

  1382. for me

  1383. shall breathe

  1384. I need no

  1385. other argument

  1386. I need no

  1387. other plea

  1388. it is enough

  1389. that Jesus

  1390. died

  1391. and that he

  1392. died for

  1393. me

  1394. I need

  1395. enough

  1396. that Jesus

  1397. saved

  1398. this is my

  1399. fears and

  1400. doubt

  1401. a sinful

  1402. soul

  1403. I come

  1404. to him

  1405. he'll never

  1406. cast me

  1407. out

  1408. I need

  1409. no other

  1410. arguments

  1411. I need

  1412. no other

  1413. plea

  1414. it is

  1415. enough

  1416. that Jesus

  1417. died

  1418. and that

  1419. he died

  1420. for me

  1421. heart

  1422. heart is

  1423. leaning

  1424. on the word

  1425. the written

  1426. word

  1427. of God

  1428. salvation

  1429. by my

  1430. savior's name

  1431. salvation

  1432. through

  1433. his blood

  1434. I need

  1435. no other

  1436. argument

  1437. I need

  1438. no other

  1439. plea

  1440. it is

  1441. enough

  1442. that

  1443. Jesus

  1444. died

  1445. and that

  1446. he died

  1447. for

  1448. me

  1449. my

  1450. great

  1451. physician

  1452. heals

  1453. the sick

  1454. the lost

  1455. he came

  1456. to save

  1457. for me

  1458. his precious

  1459. blood

  1460. he shed

  1461. for me

  1462. his life

  1463. he gave

  1464. I need

  1465. no other

  1466. argument

  1467. I need

  1468. no other

  1469. plea

  1470. it is

  1471. enough

  1472. that

  1473. Jesus

  1474. died

  1475. and that

  1476. he died

  1477. for me

  1478. we end

  1479. our time

  1480. together with

  1481. a benediction

  1482. and a benediction

  1483. is simply a good

  1484. word from God

  1485. it is a word

  1486. that is true

  1487. in a world

  1488. filled with words

  1489. that are not true

  1490. and so hear now

  1491. God's good word

  1492. over you

  1493. from Numbers

    Numbers 6 chapter mention

  1494. chapter 6

  1495. the Lord

  1496. bless you

  1497. and keep you

  1498. the Lord

  1499. make his face

  1500. to shine upon you

  1501. and be gracious

  1502. to you

  1503. the Lord

  1504. lift up his

  1505. countenance upon you

  1506. and give you peace

  1507. now and forever

  1508. so go now

1509. in the grace and peace

1510. of our Lord and Savior
