  1. Good morning. My name is Matthew Capone and I'm the pastor here at Cheyenne Mountain Presbyterian Church and it's my joy to bring God's word to you today.

  2. A special welcome if you're new or visiting with us. We're glad that you're here and we're glad that you're here not because we're trying to fill seats, but because we're following Jesus together as one community.

  3. And as we follow Jesus together, we become convinced that there's no one so good. They don't need God's grace and no one so bad that they can't have it, which is why we come back week after week to hear what God has to say to us in his word.

  4. We're continuing our series in the Gospel of Mark. You'll remember that the gospels tell the story of Jesus and his life and his death and his resurrection.

  5. And the first half of the book, chapters 1 through 8, we were building up to this climax as we asked the question, who is Jesus?

  6. And Peter finally confesses in the middle of chapter 8 that Jesus is the Christ.

  7. Now that we've established that the second half of Mark is Jesus' journey to the cross,

  8. and now the disciples are not so much asking the question of who he is as seeing what it actually means to follow him.

  9. Remember that Peter rebukes Jesus right after that confession for speaking about suffering,

  10. and yet we find out, we've seen in these last few sections, that that's a critical part of what it means to follow Jesus.

  11. And so they're learning what it means to take up their cross and follow him.

  12. This morning we're going to take a look at the temptation and danger of success and power.

  13. The disciples here are hoping and thinking that as they follow Jesus, their stars in this world are going to rise.

  14. But they're going to end up being terribly disappointed because Jesus has something far better for them.

  15. And so with that, I'm going to invite you to turn with me.

  16. You can turn in your Bible, you can turn on your phone, you can turn in your worship guide to Mark chapter 9.

    Mark 9 chapter mention

  17. No matter where you turn, remember that this is God's Word.

  18. And God tells us that his Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path,

  19. which means that he has not left us to stumble alone in the dark,

  20. but instead he's given us his Word to show us the way to go.

  21. And so that's why we read now Mark chapter 9, starting at verse 33.

    Mark 9 chapter mention

  22. And they came to Capernaum, and when he was in the house, he asked them,

  23. What were you discussing on the way?

  24. Oh, excuse me, starting at verse 30, not 33.

  25. They went on from there and passed through Galilee, and he did not want anyone to know,

  26. for he was teaching his disciples, saying to them,

  27. The Son of Man is going to be delivered into the hands of men, and they will kill him.

  28. And when he is killed, after three days he will rise.

  29. But they did not understand the saying, and were afraid to ask him.

  30. Verse 33.

  31. And they came to Capernaum, and when he was in the house, he asked them,

  32. What were you discussing on the way?

  33. But they kept silent, for on the way they had argued with one another about who was the greatest.

  34. And he sat down and called the twelve.

  35. And he said to them,

  36. If anyone would be first, he must be last of all and servant of all.

  37. And he took a child and put him in the midst of them, and taking him in his arms, he said to them,

  38. Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me,

  39. and whoever receives me receives not me, but him who sent me.

  40. I invite you to pray with me as we come to this portion of God's word.

  41. Our Father in heaven, we praise you and thank you again that you speak to us in your word,

  42. that you cut through the lies that we're told by others,

  43. and the lies that we believe ourselves, and instead you show us the truth.

  44. We ask that you would show us the truth this morning about success and glory and power,

  45. that it's something that belongs to you and no one else.

  46. We ask that you would cast a spotlight on Jesus,

  47. that we would see him as more beautiful and glorious than we had before,

  48. that you would grow our love and our affection for him,

  49. and you'd grow our reverence and our awe for him.

  50. And we ask these things in the mighty name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

  51. As many of you know, Mark Mish goes to our church,

  52. and he keeps a pretty low profile,

  53. so you may not know who I'm referring to.

  54. He wears the characteristic blue rain jacket when he's here,

  55. no matter the time of year,

  56. and he's tall because he's a runner.

  57. He's actually the running coach at UCCS.

  58. He's out of town.

  59. He's out of the country right now.

  60. In fact, he's out of the country a lot because of his job.

  61. He doesn't just coach at UCCS.

  62. He's also the coach for the Estonia national running team.

  63. So he's in Europe right now.

  64. He's working with them,

  65. and they have a big race coming up in Berlin on August 15th,

  66. so we won't see him for a while.

  67. The first time I ever met Mark was at the Panera down on Southgate.

  68. We got dinner.

  69. I think it was before he came to our church,

  70. but he was checking us out.

  71. By the way, Mark gave me permission to tell you all this story.

  72. I emailed him with this this week,

  73. so don't think that if you share a story with me,

  74. it's just going to randomly show up in a sermon.

  75. Mark knows this is happening, okay?

  76. Fear not.

  77. So I had dinner with Mark.

  78. I'd never met him before,

  79. and as we were talking, he said,

  80. Matthew, you're going to really appreciate this.

  81. Do you know the loneliest place I've ever been?

  82. I couldn't guess, so he told me.

  83. He said, the loneliest place that I have ever been

  84. is in the cafeteria at Olympic Village.

  85. Because when you walk into the cafeteria at Olympic Village,

  86. there are two kinds of athletes.

  87. There are athletes who have competed and lost.

  88. And so as they sit there and they eat,

  89. they're thinking to themselves,

  90. what is next?

  91. Put all this work in.

  92. I've put all this effort in.

  93. It hasn't materialized.

  94. And then you have athletes who are sitting there

  95. and they have won.

  96. They have the medal that they've been working for

  97. and they're actually asking the same question.

  98. What's next?

  99. Because they are learning the hard way

  100. that what they've done did not fill their spiritual hunger,

  101. their spiritual need.

  102. Whether you win or lose,

  103. victory, Olympic medals are an empty hope.

  104. You can be the greatest in the world

  105. and be incredibly lonely.

  106. Greatness and power and success

  107. do not and will not deliver on their promises

  108. because they can't.

  109. That's what we see this morning in this story,

  110. that the disciples are not beyond the allure

  111. of greatness and power.

  112. And of course, neither are we.

  113. And so we pick up this story in verse 30.

  114. We find out they were in Galilee.

  115. Remember that Galilee is where Jesus was preaching

  116. in chapter one.

  117. And so in a sense, there's a homecoming here.

  118. But in the past, Jesus was doing these great miracles

  119. and telling people about the kingdom of God.

  120. But now as we meet him, he has this more private ministry.

  121. He doesn't want anyone to know, verse 34.

  122. Instead, he is spending this private time

  123. alone with the disciples

  124. as he enters this period of instruction

  125. that they would know what it actually means

  126. to love him and to follow him.

  127. But he's teaching them something they don't want to hear.

  128. Verse 31, the Son of Man is going to be delivered

  129. into the hands of men and they will kill him.

  130. We find out verse 32, the disciples don't understand

  131. and they also don't want to ask.

  132. One person says this is probably because

  133. they understand enough to know

  134. they don't want to know anymore.

  135. Jesus is talking about death here

  136. and they've heard everything that they're willing to hear.

  137. Remember back in chapter eight,

  138. Jesus was speaking about the same thing

  139. and Peter rebuked him there.

  140. Here, Peter is smart enough to stay silent,

  141. not bold or brave enough to ask for more information.

  142. It gets worse than that though.

  143. There's a tragic irony here,

  144. this great disconnect between what's happening

  145. with Jesus and the disciples.

  146. Jesus, verse 31, is telling them,

  147. he's teaching them about suffering and humiliation.

  148. And we find out at the very same time,

  149. while Jesus is giving this instruction to them,

  150. the disciples are talking and thinking

  151. about something very different.

  152. They are talking and thinking about greatness and glory.

  153. We discover that in verse 33,

  154. they get to this house that they're headed to,

  155. very likely the same house that we saw in chapter one,

  156. where Peter and Andrew lived.

  157. And he asks them this uncomfortable question,

  158. what were you discussing on the way?

  159. Verse 34, they have no answer

  160. because of course they're incredibly embarrassed.

  161. What they wanted to know was

  162. who was the greatest of all.

  163. Now comical, if it wasn't so sad,

  164. how much the disciples missed the point.

  165. Jesus is here telling them about suffering

  166. and they instead want power.

  167. And Jesus gives us a basic principle

  168. of the gospel in verse 35.

  169. He tells them, if anyone would be first,

  170. he must be last of all and servant of all.

  171. In other words, the way of the world

  172. is to push other people down

  173. so that you can go up.

  174. The way of the world is to push other people down

  175. so that you can go up.

  176. The gospel actually works in the reverse,

  177. the opposite way.

  178. The way of the gospel is to push others up

  179. as you go down.

  180. The way of the gospel is to push others up

  181. as you go down.

  182. But we can understand the temptation

  183. the disciples have here.

  184. It's a temptation that we feel as well,

  185. that we want success,

  186. not out of a desire to serve God

  187. or others or the world,

  188. not to see God's purposes grow and expand,

  189. but instead that we would never have to feel shame

  190. and weakness and vulnerability ever again.

  191. That we could always be powerful

  192. and independent and never need others.

  193. We would be always wanted

  194. and never rejected.

  195. And of course it comes from this place

  196. of great insecurity

  197. that they're grasping

  198. to find their significance somewhere.

  199. It takes a lot of security

  200. to push other people up.

  201. You might say it takes a supernatural security

  202. to try to do that

  203. rather than fill a bottomless hole.

  204. I'm going to do something

  205. I haven't done before

  206. and I'm going to speak to you all

  207. a little bit differently

  208. than I have in the past.

  209. There are certain things

  210. that you can't say

  211. until you've been with a congregation

  212. for four or five years.

  213. And you know,

  214. I came here in the June of 2017,

  215. which is a little over five years ago.

  216. And some of us have been

  217. through a lot together.

  218. We've bled together.

  219. We've cried together.

  220. We've faced a lot of challenges together

  221. as a church.

  222. And so I say this out of my love for you.

  223. Some of you, many of you

  224. are working so hard

  225. to fill up,

  226. to make up for what did

  227. or didn't happen

  228. when you were a child,

  229. to fill up

  230. what you maybe didn't receive

  231. from your parents

  232. or your family.

  233. And some of you are striving

  234. so hard inside

  235. and outside of the church,

  236. striving to fill something

  237. that you're not going to be able to fill,

  238. grasping for affirmation.

  239. And I want you to know

  240. that that makes me sad

  241. and it makes me sad

  242. because I want you to know

  243. the love of God.

  244. The Bible tells us

  245. about how great

  246. the love of God is.

  247. Romans chapter five

  248. says it was while

  249. we were still sinners

  250. that Christ died for us.

  251. So there's nothing

  252. that you did

  253. to earn God's favor

  254. or his approval.

  255. Not only is there

  256. nothing that you did

  257. to earn God's favor

  258. or his approval,

  259. Romans chapter eight

  260. tells us there's nothing

  261. you can do to lose it.

  262. There's nothing

  263. you can do

  264. that will separate you

  265. from the love of God.

  266. Remember what we saw

  267. in Mark chapter three

  268. when Jesus first called

  269. the disciples,

  270. what did he call them for?

  271. What was the purpose?

  272. He called them

  273. to be with him.

  274. And then he spends

  275. the next three chapters

  276. working with them

  277. before he ever

  278. sends them out.

  279. I've told you guys

  280. many times before

  281. and I'll tell you again

  282. once you have any

  283. power or wealth

  284. in this world

  285. you quickly know

  286. the difference

  287. between people

  288. who are interested

  289. in you

  290. and people

  291. who are interested

  292. in what they can get

  293. out of you.

  294. Have you ever

  295. been with someone

  296. who thought

  297. your presence

  298. was enough?

  299. that it was enough

  300. just that you were

  301. there with them

  302. and they didn't need

  303. you to perform

  304. for them.

  305. They didn't need you

  306. to deliver things

  307. for them.

  308. They just wanted

  309. you there.

  310. Remember I've told you

  311. many times before

  312. that the disciples

  313. got many things wrong

  314. and they got one thing

  315. right.

  316. And the one thing

  317. right is that they

  318. kept following Jesus.

  319. The other side

  320. of that coin

  321. is that they got

  322. many things wrong

  323. and Jesus stuck

  324. with them

  325. which means

  326. that their presence

  327. was enough.

  328. Brothers and sisters

  329. when it comes

  330. to Jesus

  331. and his relationship

  332. with you

  333. your presence

  334. is enough.

  335. love.

  336. You cannot

  337. earn more

  338. of God's

  339. love.

  340. You do not

  341. need more

  342. greatness

  343. or success.

  344. And you might

  345. be wondering

  346. why in a sermon

  347. about success

  348. and power

  349. we're suddenly

  350. talking about love.

  351. And the answer

  352. is this.

  353. We are only

  354. safe

  355. from the

  356. temptation

  357. of power

  358. and success

  359. when we're

  360. secure

  361. in the love

  362. of God.

  363. We are only

  364. safe

  365. from the

  366. temptation

  367. of power

  368. and success

  369. when we

  370. are secure

  371. in the love

  372. of God.

  373. You have

  374. to find

  375. security

  376. or significance

  377. somewhere.

  378. You're going

  379. to try

  380. to fill

  381. that hole

  382. somehow.

  383. and power

  384. and status

  385. will always

  386. be alluring

  387. until we

  388. realize

  389. there's a

  390. better

  391. source.

  392. We're going

  393. to go

  394. somewhere

  395. to fill

  396. that hunger

  397. and that

  398. emptiness

  399. and one

  400. of the sad

  401. realities of

  402. life is that

  403. people will

  404. eat poison

  405. before they

  406. starve.

  407. Know the

  408. love of God

  409. for you.

  410. Lord is my

  411. shepherd.

  412. I shall

  413. not want.

  414. Thomas

  415. Chalmers,

  416. a Scottish

  417. pastor in

  418. the 1800s,

  419. wrote this

  420. book called

  421. The Expulsive

  422. Power of a

  423. New Affection,

  424. which is a

  425. fancy way of

  426. saying you

  427. can't get rid

  428. of an old

  429. love until

  430. you have a

  431. new love.

  432. I'm going

  433. to translate

  434. this to you

  435. into single

  436. man speak.

  437. It's hard

  438. to get over

  439. your old

  440. crush until

  441. you got a

  442. new crush.

  443. Hard to get

  444. over power

  445. power and

  446. success until

  447. we realize

  448. we have

  449. everything we

  450. long for

  451. in Christ.

  452. What power

  453. and success

  454. offer us,

  455. they cannot

  456. deliver.

  457. God,

  458. Jesus,

  459. can and

  460. does.

  461. know the

  462. love of

  463. God.

  464. Let the

  465. love of

  466. God be

  467. greater and

  468. more alluring

  469. and powerful

  470. than power

  471. and success.

  472. Jesus

  473. doesn't

  474. just

  475. call them

  476. out on

  477. their conversation.

  478. He also

  479. gives them

  480. some positive

  481. teaching about

  482. what things

  483. actually look

  484. like in

  485. his kingdom.

  486. Verse 35,

  487. he calls a

  488. family meeting

  489. and decides

  490. it's time

  491. for some

  492. teaching.

  493. He says

  494. this,

  495. if anyone

  496. would be

  497. first,

  498. he must

  499. be last

  500. of all

  501. and servant

  502. of all.

  503. Then he

  504. decides to

  505. have an

  506. object

  507. lesson here.

  508. He takes

  509. up a

  510. child.

  511. Some

  512. people

  513. think

  514. this

  515. child

  516. might

  517. actually

  518. be

  519. Peter's

  520. child.

  521. Remember

  522. there in

  523. Capernaum,

  524. which is

  525. in Galilee,

  526. we know

  527. from chapter

  528. one,

  529. this is

  530. the place

  531. where Peter

  532. and Andrew

  533. live.

  534. We know

  535. that because

  536. Jesus raised

  537. Peter's

  538. mother-in-law

  539. from the

  540. dead.

  541. So there's

  542. a chance

  543. they're still

  544. in that

  545. house and

  546. he's taking

  547. up one

  548. of the

  549. disciples'

  550. children.

  551. He says

  552. to them,

  553. whoever

  554. receives

  555. one such

  556. child in

  557. my name

  558. receives

  559. me.

  560. And

  561. whoever

  562. receives

  563. me

  564. receives

  565. not me

  566. but him

  567. who sent

  568. me.

  569. Now there

  570. are many

  571. places in

  572. the Bible

  573. that talk

  574. about being

  575. a child.

  576. This is

  577. talking about

  578. receiving

  579. children.

  580. They're

  581. related but

  582. they're

  583. different.

  584. What Jesus

  585. is saying

  586. here is

  587. that

  588. greatness

  589. in my

  590. kingdom

  591. does not

  592. come from

  593. caring about

  594. greatness.

  595. It comes

  596. from welcoming

  597. children.

  598. And children

  599. here are

  600. this symbol

  601. of people

  602. who can

  603. offer you

  604. nothing.

  605. Welcome

  606. people who

  607. can't help

  608. you.

  609. Welcome

  610. people who

  611. can't do

  612. anything for

  613. you.

  614. Welcome

  615. people who

  616. might be a

  617. net negative.

  618. Say no

  619. to the

  620. status games

  621. of the

  622. world.

  623. have

  624. room,

  625. have

  626. space

  627. for the

  628. people that

  629. the world

  630. finds

  631. awkward and

  632. inconvenient

  633. that they

  634. find to be

  635. a drain

  636. and in

  637. the way.

  638. I said

  639. earlier I

  640. moved here

  641. in 2017

  642. and when I

  643. did I was

  644. 27 and

  645. I turned

  646. 28 very

  647. shortly

  648. after.

  649. I just

  650. turned 33

  651. this past

  652. week and

  653. so I'm

  654. younger than

  655. most of

  656. you which

  657. proves that

  658. God has a

  659. sense of

  660. humor.

  661. But I

  662. want you to

  663. know while

  664. I'm younger

  665. than many of

  666. you if not

  667. most of you

  668. I brag

  669. about you

  670. and I brag

  671. about this

  672. church like a

  673. proud parent.

  674. Someone asked

  675. me recently

  676. what it is

  677. that I love

  678. about Cheyenne

  679. Mountain and

  680. I said what I

  681. love about

  682. Cheyenne

  683. Mountain is

  684. that Cheyenne

  685. Mountain is

  686. an island of

  687. misfit toys.

  688. We are not

  689. a church of

  690. beautiful people.

  691. We are not

  692. a church

  693. I also said

  694. look if you

  695. come to our

  696. church there's

  697. going to be a

  698. place for you.

  699. Our people

  700. welcome whoever

  701. comes in the

  702. doors.

  703. They welcome

  704. whoever.

  705. There's no

  706. cool kids

  707. club at least

  708. as far as I

  709. know.

  710. If I find out

  711. there's a

  712. cool kids

  713. club I'm

  714. going to be

  715. very offended

  716. because no

  717. one has

  718. invited me.

  719. There aren't

  720. these highly

  721. curated friend

  722. groups where

  723. it's like we

  724. have figured

  725. out who the

  726. cool people

  727. are in the

  728. church and

  729. we're going

  730. to only hang

  731. out with

  732. them.

  733. Some of

  734. you all

  735. are super

  736. weird.

  737. Okay.

  738. And you

  739. have a

  740. super weird

  741. pastor.

  742. And God

  743. has brought

  744. us together

  745. as a

  746. family of

  747. blessings

  748. that he's

  749. given us.

  750. You be at

  751. churches

  752. sometimes right

  753. before the

  754. benediction the

  755. pastor will

  756. say something

  757. I've never

  758. said before

  759. which is make

  760. sure you greet

  761. someone new.

  762. You know why I

  763. never say that

  764. before the

  765. benediction?

  766. Because I

  767. don't need

  768. to.

  769. I know that

  770. no matter who

  771. walks into our

  772. church you all

  773. are going to

  774. welcome them.

  775. I know and

  776. we could tell

  777. some stories

  778. okay.

  779. I'm not going

  780. to.

  781. Some of you

  782. have been here

  783. for some

  784. things.

  785. I know just

  786. come up with

  787. whatever stereotype

  788. you want.

  789. Whoever doesn't

  790. fit in the

  791. most.

  792. I never have a

  793. question in my

  794. mind about

  795. whether Cheyenne

  796. Mountain is going

  797. to go and talk

  798. to that person.

  799. I am so

  800. proud of

  801. you.

  802. When I

  803. think of

  804. that fills

  805. me with joy.

  806. Some of you

  807. are very

  808. wealthy.

  809. Some of you

  810. are very

  811. successful.

  812. Some of you

  813. are both.

  814. I also told

  815. this person

  816. you know we

  817. have a lot of

  818. successful people

  819. in our church

  820. and they

  821. don't use

  822. their wealth

  823. and their

  824. success to

  825. hide their

  826. failure and

  827. their mistakes.

  828. I've watched

  829. you all over

  830. the last five

  831. years take

  832. care of people

  833. who can't offer

  834. you anything in

  835. return.

  836. I've watched it

  837. happen over and

  838. over.

  839. I say all

  840. these things to

  841. you not to

  842. pat us on the

  843. back, not as a

  844. place of self

  845. congratulation.

  846. I've told you

  847. before there's no

  848. self congratulation

  849. when it comes to

  850. the gospel.

  851. We're never

  852. congratulating

  853. ourselves.

  854. We're never

  855. patting ourselves

  856. on the back.

  857. That's different

  858. though than

  859. encouragement.

  860. It's different

  861. than saying I

  862. see God at work.

  863. Continue.

  864. Keep doing what

  865. you're doing.

  866. Our church has

  867. plenty of

  868. weaknesses.

  869. Believe me, I

  870. know about

  871. them.

  872. We've got our

  873. own things that

  874. we can grow

  875. and we've got

  876. our own sin

  877. patterns.

  878. There are things

  879. we can learn

  880. from other

  881. churches.

  882. What I want to

  883. tell you today

  884. is when it

  885. comes to this,

  886. keep on

  887. keeping on.

  888. It is a

  889. biblical category

  890. to name what

  891. is good and

  892. to say, keep

  893. it up.

  894. Revelation

    Revelation 2 chapter mention

  895. chapter 2,

  896. there's the

  897. letter to the

  898. churches and as

  899. this letter comes

  900. from Jesus

  901. Christ, he names

  902. as a church

  903. has a strength.

  904. What it is.

  905. 1 Thessalonians

    1 Thessalonians 1 chapter mention

  906. chapter 1, one

  907. of the most

  908. underrated verses

  909. in the Bible,

  910. Paul is writing

  911. to this church

  912. and he says,

  913. I don't need to

  914. write to you to

  915. tell you about

  916. brotherly love

  917. because you

  918. already know.

  919. You're already

  920. doing it.

  921. And so he ends

  922. it with this

  923. important phrase,

  924. verse 10, we

  925. urge you brothers

  926. to do this

  927. more and more.

  928. In other words,

  929. Paul knows

  930. there's ways

  931. they can grow.

  932. He knows there's

  933. probably ways the

  934. church has not

  935. fully lived up

  936. to it, but he

  937. doesn't come

  938. forward to them

  939. and say, hey,

  940. and here's the

  941. ways where you're

  942. sinning and you

  943. really need to

  944. level up.

  945. If you guys have

  946. been here, you

  947. know, you know

  948. that I'm always

  949. pushing us towards

  950. greater and more

  951. holiness.

  952. I want us to be

  953. moving forward as a

  954. church and there's

  955. also times to say,

  956. 1 Thessalonians

    1 Thessalonians 4:9

  957. chapter 4, verse 9,

  958. concerning brotherly

  959. love, you have no

  960. need for anyone to

  961. write to you.

  962. for you yourselves

  963. have been taught

  964. by God to love

  965. one another.

  966. Cheyenne Mountain,

  967. I can say to you

  968. concerning brotherly

  969. love, you have no

  970. need for anyone to

  971. write to you, for

  972. you yourselves have

  973. been taught by God

  974. to love one another.

  975. And so I urge you

  976. brothers to do this

  977. more and more.

  978. Cheyenne Mountain,

  979. welcome children

  980. more and more.

  981. be hospitable

  982. more and more.

  983. Be concerned

  984. for those who have

  985. no status in this

  986. world more and more.

  987. Give to those who

  988. cannot give back

  989. to you more and

  990. more.

  991. When I came here

  992. April of 2017 to

  993. sort of kind of

  994. interview, I spent a

  995. lot of time with

  996. Jim Franks and

  997. Paul Bishop.

  998. We had this

  999. breakfast over at

  1000. IHOP by Home

  1001. Depot.

  1002. and Jim was

  1003. just like grilling

  1004. me about small

  1005. group stuff because

  1006. that's what I was

  1007. supposed to come and

  1008. do.

  1009. Joke's on you,

  1010. Jim.

  1011. Paul Bishop told

  1012. me about this

  1013. church and he said

  1014. the one thing that's

  1015. always been true of

  1016. Cheyenne Mountain is

  1017. its welcome.

  1018. That this is a

  1019. church where people

  1020. are embraced.

1021. I can tell you this

  1022. morning five years

1023. in this is a church

  1024. where people are

  1025. welcome.

  1026. I've seen you all

  1027. do it over and

  1028. over.

  1029. Do it more and

  1030. more.

1031. Okay, I told you we

  1032. have some life

  1033. principles here.

  1034. Principle one, hard to

  1035. get over your old

1036. crush until you have a

  1037. new crush.

  1038. Principle two, you

  1039. can't give away

  1040. things you don't

  1041. have.

  1042. You cannot give away

  1043. things you don't

  1044. have.

  1045. How is it that

  1046. you're able to

  1047. give to those who

  1048. can give you nothing

  1049. in return?

  1050. It's because you've

  1051. been filled with the

  1052. love of God.

  1053. It's because you've

  1054. been filled with the

  1055. love of God.

  1056. Rich and powerful

  1057. people have no

  1058. appeal to you when

  1059. you know that God

  1060. will take care of

  1061. you.

  1062. when you know the

  1063. Lord is my shepherd,

  1064. I shall not want.

  1065. You're able to risk

  1066. your social status by

  1067. hanging out with

  1068. awkward people when

  1069. you know you're

  1070. secure in the love

  1071. of God.

  1072. You cannot give

  1073. away what you

  1074. don't have.

1075. So I say again to

1076. you what I said at

  1077. the beginning,

  1078. Cheyenne

  1079. Mountain, know the

  1080. love of God.

  1081. Know the love

  1082. of God.

  1083. God's love is not

  1084. based on your

  1085. status.

  1086. It's not based on

  1087. your performance.

  1088. In God's kingdom,

  1089. you don't earn

  1090. security and love.

  1091. You've already

  1092. received it.

  1093. That's the good

  1094. news of the gospel.

  1095. That's what allows

  1096. us to give away

  1097. to others.

  1098. It is easy to

  1099. give gifts

  1100. when you know

  1101. your father's rich.

  1102. It's easy to give

  1103. gifts when you know

  1104. your father is rich.

  1105. It's when Jesus

  1106. accepts you and you

  1107. know it that you're

  1108. able to be calm

  1109. and present and

  1110. offer that kind of

  1111. security to others.

1112. Know the love of God

  1113. more and more.

  1114. Welcome, children,

  1115. more and more.

  1116. The famous

  1117. 1981 film

  1118. Chariots of Fire

  1119. tells the story of

  1120. two different

  1121. runners who are

  1122. similar in many

  1123. ways and also

  1124. different.

  1125. They're competing in

  1126. the 1924 Olympics.

  1127. Their names are

  1128. Eric Little and

  1129. Harold Abrams.

  1130. Abrams has this

  1131. deep wound,

  1132. this insecurity,

  1133. this anger that

  1134. he's trying to work

  1135. out from growing up

  1136. as a Jew in

  1137. Judeo-Christian

  1138. Britain.

  1139. And he believes

  1140. that winning the

  1141. Olympics is going

  1142. to be the solution

  1143. to his problems.

  1144. If he can only

  1145. get that gold

  1146. medal, it will

  1147. finally resolve

  1148. all of his angst.

1149. So we see at the

  1150. beginning of the

  1151. movie, there's

  1152. very different

  1153. things going on

  1154. with these two

  1155. men.

  1156. Abrams is wrapped

  1157. in prestige.

  1158. He's at Cambridge

  1159. University.

  1160. For the first time

  1161. in 700 years,

  1162. he's able to

  1163. complete the

  1164. challenge of the

  1165. college dash.

  1166. And so he's

  1167. going up in

  1168. popularity and

  1169. success.

  1170. On the other

  1171. hand, we see

  1172. Eric Little,

  1173. who's off in

  1174. the middle of

  1175. nowhere in the

  1176. Scottish Highlands

  1177. helping to run

  1178. this children's

  1179. race.

  1180. And so one is

  1181. this worldly

  1182. success and

  1183. champion.

  1184. The other one

  1185. is hidden away

  1186. in Scotland.

  1187. Little has to

  1188. be convinced to

  1189. compete in the

  1190. Olympics because

  1191. he's not sure if

  1192. it fits his life

  1193. mission of

  1194. following God no

  1195. matter what.

  1196. But he loves

  1197. to run.

  1198. Abrams, on the

  1199. other hand,

  1200. actually confesses

  1201. at one point that

  1202. he doesn't love

  1203. running at all.

  1204. Instead, he says,

  1205. it is a compulsion,

  1206. it is a weapon

  1207. against being

  1208. Jewish.

  1209. Little, on the

  1210. other hand, says,

  1211. God made me fast.

  1212. When I run, I feel

  1213. his pleasure.

  1214. Abrams believes

  1215. that running is the

  1216. way that he is

  1217. going to, he says

  1218. this, justify my

  1219. whole existence.

  1220. Abrams.

  1221. Now, if you're

  1222. familiar with the

  1223. movie, you know

  1224. that the end, both

  1225. of them get a

  1226. gold medal.

  1227. The problem is

  1228. they respond very

  1229. differently.

  1230. Abrams receives

  1231. the gold medal

  1232. that he's been

  1233. longing for.

  1234. He becomes, at

  1235. that moment, the

  1236. fastest man in

  1237. the world.

  1238. And what do we

  1239. see after that?

  1240. He's in the

  1241. locker room with

  1242. the rest of his

  1243. teammates and he's

  1244. not able to talk

  1245. to them.

  1246. He's depressed and

  1247. morose and he

  1248. walks out all by

  1249. himself.

  1250. In one of the

  1251. last scenes, he's

  1252. standing with his

  1253. coach, he's sitting

  1254. in this bar and

  1255. both of them are

  1256. drunk.

  1257. His success has

  1258. not given him

  1259. what he needed or

  1260. wanted.

  1261. Doesn't know what

  1262. to do.

  1263. As he's racing,

  1264. you can see his

  1265. face is filled with

  1266. anxiety and fear.

  1267. little's face is

  1268. filled with joy.

  1269. And after he

  1270. finishes, he goes

  1271. and celebrates with

  1272. his friends.

  1273. Brothers and

  1274. sisters, we need

  1275. to be freed from

  1276. the power and the

  1277. allure of greatness

  1278. and success so that

1279. we can have joy as

  1280. we run.

  1281. We can offer

  1282. God's welcome to

  1283. the least of

  1284. these.

  1285. If anyone would

  1286. be first, he must

1287. be last of all and

  1288. servant of all.

  1289. Whoever receives

  1290. one such child in

  1291. my name receives

  1292. me and whoever

  1293. receives me receives

  1294. not me but him

  1295. who sent me.

  1296. Let's pray.

  1297. Our Father in

  1298. heaven, we thank

  1299. you again for

  1300. your word that

  1301. you've given to

  1302. guide us.

  1303. We ask that you

  1304. would grow us

  1305. more and more,

  1306. that your grace

  1307. would continue to

  1308. be at work,

  1309. that we would be

  1310. people who are

  1311. tempted less and

  1312. less by power and

  1313. success, that we

  1314. would love you and

  1315. your welcome more

  1316. and more, that it

  1317. would be truer and

  1318. truer of this church

  1319. and this community.

  1320. We ask these things

  1321. in Jesus' name.

  1322. Amen.

  1323. Amen.

  1324. Amen.
